The Best Clothing-Rental Services, Period (Beyond Rent the Runway)

best-clothing-rental-services-297523-1643153404032-main

As a fashion writer who's been covering shopping and trends for years, I've developed a bit of a shopping addiction—I mean, it kinda comes with the territory. However, I'm also aware of the toll the world's collective shopping habits have on our planet, so over the last two years, I've been on a mission to rethink how I get dressed in a more sustainable way. I've built my own capsule wardrobe , making sure most of my new purchases are timeless and sourced from sustainable designers and luxury consignment retailers . Still, like many of you, I crave something new, exciting, and trend-forward from time to time. That's where clothing-rental sites come into play. They satisfy our fashion impulses without growing our carbon footprints. They allow us to rent pieces to wear for a few days, a month, or longer and then send them back in exchange for new items to totally refresh our closets.

If you're reading this, you're likely already familiar with Rent the Runway . While it's one of my favorite rental destinations, plenty of other sites have cropped up in recent years that fit a wide range of budgets, occasions, and personal aesthetics. Ahead, I rounded up the nine best clothing-rental services out there. Whether you have a special event to dress for or are looking for some new pieces to add to your weekly rotation, there's a site to fit your sartorial needs.

1. Rent the Runway

Who doesn't love Rent the Runway ? One of the OG clothing-rental destinations, RTR first rose in popularity as a more affordable and sustainable option for event dressing. (I've rented quite a few wedding guest ensembles in my day.) However, the brand's thousands of items go way beyond formalwear, including office-appropriate attire, going-out tops, and more casual wares, and it all comes from premium labels. Plus, RTR offers a full range of rentable accessories, including bags, shoes, sunglasses, and jewelry.

You have the option to choose between a one-time rental for special occasions or a monthly subscription that ranges from four to 12 items. And if you decide you want a piece to be yours forever, you have the option to purchase it at a discounted rate.

Brands:  hundreds of brands, from Badgley Mischka and Self-Portrait to A.L.C. and Anine Bing

Cost:  four-item trial membership for $69/month ($89/month after) and up or $10+ for one-time rentals

Sizing:  0 to 22

Self-Portrait + Green Cutout Midi Dress

Another one of my current favorite places to rent is Nuuly , an offshoot of Urbn (which owns retailers Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People). For an $88 subscription fee that you can easily pause or cancel at any time, you can pick six items to be delivered to your doorstep every month. That's a pretty sweet deal if you ask me. But what makes Nuuly so exciting is the selection. Not only does Nuuly carry everything from winter coats to going-out tops from all of its retailers' in-house labels, but it also offers goods from 150+ premium brands and some pretty cool vintage pieces. Should you fall in love with an item (which I certainly have), you can purchase your favorites at a discounted rate.

Brands: Free People, Anthropologie, and Urban Outfitters private labels, plus 150+ premium brands and vintage

Cost:  $88/month for six rented items

Sizing:  XXS to 5X, plus petite and maternity

4Si3nna + Krista Midi Dress

3. Nova Octo

If your goal is to turn heads at your next big event, look no further than  Nova Octo  for something truly special. The rental service boasts a stunning selection of gowns, cocktail dresses, bags, jewelry, and other one-off pieces from labels such as Gucci, Jacquemus, Giambattista Valli, and more. As you might expect, prices are definitely on the steeper side, with the majority falling into the $300 to $950 range, but let me reiterate here that everything is  breathtaking . The site also offers a selection of ready-to-wear such as LaQuan Smith moto pants and a Brock Collection pleated top. All you need to do is select the date of your event and choose from the pieces available. You'll pay a one-time rental fee, which also covers the cost of shipping and dry cleaning.

Also nice? Nova Octo offers in-person appointments at its NYC showroom, where you can try on pieces before you rent and even have temporary alterations made if needed.

Brands:  Gucci, LaQuan Smith, Giambattista Valli, Jacquemus, Retrofête, and more

Cost: varies per item

Sizing: 0 to 16

Jacquemus + Cortese Fringed Dress

4. Vince Unfold

When it comes to timeless and understated wardrobe staples, no brand comes to mind quicker than Vince. The California-based label is beloved for its quality pieces that look a lot more expensive than their price tags, so when it launched its rental platform Vince Unfold in 2018, fashion people everywhere rejoiced. Vince Unfold offers an impressive variety of pieces to rent: cropped wool jackets, silky slip skirts and pant sets, and plenty of elevated cashmere knits.

All that's required is saving at least 10 styles to your Edit folder, and you'll then receive four of them. Once you're ready to exchange, ship back your items in the included prepaid bag and select your next picks. While the monthly fee is $160 for four pieces, you can exchange them for something new as you please throughout the month. And like many rental services out there, you can keep the items you love for a discounted rate.

Cost: $160/month for four items

Sizing: 00 to 22, XXS to XXXL

Vince + Long Sleeve Draped Dress in Dark Taupe

Think of Tulerie as the product of Rent the Runway and The RealReal having a baby: pre-owned luxury items that you can rent straight from the owner's own closet. Ideal for a special event or vacation or just for fun, the Tulerie app allows you to borrow pieces for four, 10, or 20 days at a time.

How it works is pretty simple. Download the app and browse through its extensive catalog (including everything from Chanel and Fendi to Aje and Frame). When you find an item you love, request it from the lender and choose the delivery date and amount of time you'd like to rent it for. Once the lender approves, it'll be shipped straight to your doorstep. Of course, like other secondhand luxury retailers, you can choose to buy pieces through the website at consignment-level prices, which vary according to the brand and item condition.

Brands: luxury labels such as Fendi, Chanel, and Bottega Veneta and contemporary brands such as Aje, Frame, and Sea

Sizing: XS to XL

Bottega Veneta + Cashmere Interwoven Sweater

6. Gwynnie Bee

Of all the rental services available, Gwynnie Bee is, by far, the most inclusive. The service began by catering to sizes 10 through 32 but recently expanded its offering of casual dresses, separates, and outerwear to include sizing down to 0. It's also one of the most cost-effective options. It starts at $49 a month for one item, which may sound steep, but you're allowed to swap it out as often as you'd like. This gives you the ability to constantly refresh your closet. It offers multiple plans, with its highest tier allowing you to rent 10 items for $199 a month. Plus, you have the option to purchase your favorites at a discount.

Brands: Eloquii, Hutch, ASOS, Lauren Ralph Lauren, and more

Cost: one item for $49/month up to 10 items for $199/month

Sizing: 0 to 32

Eloquii + Puff Sleeve Faux Leather Dress in Black

7. Vivrelle

Dreaming of adding a Chanel or Bottega Veneta bag to your closet but not quite ready to drop thousands of dollars? I get it—that's where Vivrelle comes in to save the day. The members-only rental service offers hundreds of incredible designer handbags as well as fine jewelry, which you can rent per month or hold on to for longer. While the selection includes plenty of classic bags—think quilted Chanel and Gucci GG Marmont—there's also an array of statement-making pieces like Fendi Vertigo-print bags and rainbow Louis Vuitton pieces.

Membership is broken into four tiers: Premier for $39/month, which allows you to rent one item valued up to $1000; Classique for $99/month for items valued up to $4000; and Couture ($199/month) and Couture+ ($279/month), which allow you to rent one or two items over $4000 as well as unique and limited-edition items. You can also choose to pay monthly or prepay months in advance.

Brands: Chanel, Bottega Veneta, Gucci, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, and more

Cost: $39/month for one item valued up to $1000 up to $279/month for two items valued over $4000, plus access to limited-edition items

Bottega Veneta + The Pouch

8. Banana Republic Style Passport

Similar to Vince Unfold, Banana Republic entered the rental world with Banana Republic Style Passport back in 2019, allowing you to refresh your wardrobe with chic casual wares and elevated office staples for just $75 a month.

Browse through the site's weekly new arrivals and save your favorites to your "Closet." Three items will be selected and shipped to you in every box. When you're ready for newness, send back all three pieces in the prepaid envelope (or purchase them at a discounted price), and your next three will be shipped out. The service allows you to swap at your own pace, meaning you can receive three or more boxes per month.

Cost: $75/month

Sizing: 0 to 20, XXS to XXL

Banana Republic + Deep V-Neck Maxi Dress in Reddish Orange

If you're interested in renting but not sure where to start, let Armoire and its team of professional stylists do the work for you. Similar to a subscription box, all you need to do is take a quick style quiz, and a stylist will curate a selection of pieces based on your results. You can then choose your favorites and rent them for as long as you'd like or purchase them at a discount.

The site boasts thousands of items, from designer jeans and elevated workwear to casual loungewear and athleisure, making it a great option for your WFH or in-office 'fits. It's also one of the more affordable rental services out there, so it's definitely a great way to dip your toes if this whole renting thing is new to you.

Brands: Rag & Bone, Diane von Furstenberg, Eloquii, Hutch, and many more

Cost:  four items for $79/month, seven for $119/month, unlimited for $249/month

Sizing: 0 to 24

Thinking About Fashion Rentals? Consider These 8 Services

8 Clothing Rental Subscription Services to Test Out in 2024

We may earn a commission if you buy something from any affiliate links on our site.

What if you had carte blanche with your wardrobe ? Today’s clothing rental subscription services make it entirely possible to breathe new life into your closet, without having to fully commit to new pieces that might not end up working for you down the line. It doesn’t matter if you’re a thrill-seeking maximalist or a less-is-more minimalist, these clothing and accessories rental subscription services are the easiest way to ensure 2024 is your best-dressed year yet.

Whether that means suiting up for important meetings in the office, going all out for a winter sun (or ski !) getaway, or slipping on a gown for an intimate wedding ceremony , there’s no denying the joy of putting together a new outfit. You could search your closet for fresh ways to make something old feel new again, spend hours searching for a completely new look to buy, or—the reason we’re here—test out a clothing rental subscription service.

Sure, I could just buy that new Khaite dress to wear to dinner with friends. But the limited space in my tiny closet, coupled with my efforts to find more sustainable ways to shop, made it clear that it was time to give clothing rental a try.

I’m sure we’ve all heard of Rent the Runway by now, but as someone who literally shops for a living, I wanted to discover even more options. So I went on a quest to unearth the best rental services around. Some specialize in coveted accessories, while others stock up on emerging designers. They’re perfect for testing out those up-and-coming names without the long-term commitment.

Ahead, discover 8 clothing rental programs that are totally worth a try.

The Best Clothing Rental Services

  • Nuuly : starting at $98 per month
  • Armoire : starting at $79 per month
  • Rent the Runway : starting at $94 per month
  • Vivrelle : starting at $45 per month
  • Vince Unfold : starting at $160 per month
  • Tulerie : free to join
  • Nova Octo : one-time rental fee per item
  • Switch : starting at $55 per month

Want to rent items from Anthropologie, Free People, and Urban Outfitters? Nuuly is the place to go. Subscribers are especially in love with the rental website’s wear-everywhere dresses right now. “We bring in new inventory every day and are constantly sourcing new brands via trade shows, Instagram, or even customer referrals,” says Dave Hayne, CTO of URBN and President of Nuuly.

How it works: Each subscription allows renters to borrow six items at a time for $98 a month. Be sure to take full advantage of the website’s features as you browse. “Our algorithm will get to know what you like and re-sort the product you see accordingly, but it gets smarter the more actions you take,” adds Hayne. Don’t worry about shipping or cleaning, because it’s all included in the membership.

Those looking for help from a personal stylist will enjoy Armoire. After taking a style quiz, Armoire uses professional stylists and an algorithm to curate a custom closet for users.

How it works: There are three plans to choose from: four items for $79, seven for $119, or an unlimited number of items for $249 per month (the first two plans allow renters to receive only one case per month). If you decide to keep any clothes for longer than a month, don’t worry because any unused cases are rolled over. That way, you’ll never pay for extra cases you don’t receive. The best part: All membership tiers include free shipping both ways and can be paused or canceled at any time.

Rent the Runway

Forget everything you thought you knew about Rent the Runway. The program has completely changed over the years. While it originally launched with a focus on evening wear, they now offer an assortment of wear-everyday pieces.

You’ll also be delightfully surprised at all of the new labels being added every week. Some of our favorites include Altuzarra, Ulla Johnson, and Rotate Birger Christensen.

How it works: All three memberships allow you to rent four items at a time and keep them as long as you want. The first tier costs $94 a month (after a $84 trial) and gives renters one shipment of four items per month. Members in this quadrant have access to basic closet items valued at $350 or less. If you want two shipments (a total of eight items to rent per month), the next option is the $144 per month membership. Rent the Runway calls it the Most Loved program, and it includes full closet access to items valued at up to $3,000. The third option gives renters the same access, plus four shipments per month, which equals up to 16 items every 30 days. Returns are made easy with pre-paid shipping and reusable garment bags for all tier levels.

If you’re a fan of changing your handbag often, then Vivrelle will be your best friend. Sure, you could invest in a wildly popular Bottega Veneta bag for a couple of thousand dollars, or you could rent one for an entire month for $99. Jewelry lovers will also appreciate this rental service because it offers coveted designs from Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels.

How it works: There are three membership options to choose from with no required return dates for the items that you decide to rent. The first is called Premier and costs $45 per month. It gives you access to jewelry only. Classique is $119 and gives you access to one piece of jewelry or bag a month that has a retail value of $4,000 or less. Then there’s the mid-tier Couture offering for $219 a month. It also allows renters to select one piece of jewelry, bag, or one of the limited-edition items. The third option is the Couture+ level, which costs $309 a month. Members in that program will get two items per month: one from the Classique collection and another from Couture.

Vince Unfold

Turn your wardrobe into an ever-evolving minimalist heaven by joining Vince’s rental program. While you won’t get to experiment with different brands, the label is constantly adding new styles for men and women to browse through each week—like knit dresses and tailored trousers. How it works: Vince Unfold’s rental program is straightforward. Renters get to enjoy four items at a time, and they have the added benefit of enjoying an unlimited amount of exchanges and free shipping for $160 per month. Keep them as long as you want. Whenever you’re ready, return rented items in the pre-paid bag.

While most rental services curate a collection of items to loan out to customers, Tulerie stands out because the platform enables users to rent directly from other users. It’s like borrowing from your friends, but even better. “We took a very old concept, modernized it, and expanded the friend group to borrow from,” says Tulerie founder and CEO Violet Gross. The peer-to-peer rental service means you can find something new to wear through the app or lend out pieces from your own wardrobe. There’s also a resell option for lenders who are ready to part ways with their pre-loved items.

How it works: There’s no need to make a subscription commitment here. After an initial FaceTime interview, members can shop the closets of other users. Each item has its own special price with the option to be rented for four, 10, or 20 days. Tulerie automatically generates shipping labels so that borrowers or lenders don’t have to worry about that part of the rental process. It’s also free for lenders to join.

In need of an awe-inspiring gown? Nova Octo is the way to go. The rental service keeps a collection of special, one-of-a-kind dresses, from designers such as LaQuan Smith and Carolina Herrera.

How it works: Once the date is set for your special occasion, browse the website by using the date filter to see items that will be available during that time period. You’ll pay a one-time rental fee that includes shipping and dry cleaning, which can also be divided into four payments with Quad Pay.

For a more premium picks, you have Select 1, which gives you access to more coveted styles and costs $195 per month for one Select piece; Select+ costs $295 per month a lets you rent one Select and three Core pieces at a time. Core pieces have an average retail value of $1,000 while Select items are worth $4,000 on average. The 7 Best Clothing Rental Services Actually Worth Your Coin

travel wardrobe rental

Getting ready for the day is so much more exciting when you know a brand new outfit is hanging in your closet, just waiting for its debut moment. Thankfully, we’re waving goodbye to the days of overstuffed closets and rapidly thinning wallets—with clothing rental services , you’ll always have something new to wear, in a more affordable, sustainable way .

Carly Hobbs , a sustainable living expert and founder of the eco-friendly parenting blog, My Green Toddler , explains how small sustainability swaps, like renting clothing instead of buying a new outfit for every occasion in your planner, make a big difference. “By embracing clothing rental, consumers can actively participate in reducing the demand for new clothing production, thereby lessening their ecological footprint,” Hobbs says. “Sharing garments among multiple users maximizes their lifespan and contributes to a more circular and eco-friendly approach to fashion consumption.”

  • 01 Best overall
  • 02 Best variety
  • 03 Best for plus-size styles
  • 04 Best jewelry
  • 05 Most personalized
  • 06 Most sustainable
  • 07 Best capsule collections
  • Carly Hobbs , sustainable living expert and founder of the eco-friendly parenting blog, My Green Toddler
  • Sky Pollard , head of product at Nuuly

And though many shoppers envision clothing rental services to be expensive or impractical, these services have seen a major uptick in the last year; according to a recent report by Research and Markets , the global clothing rental market grew at an annual growth rate of 10.8 percent over the last year, to $1.57 billion in 2023.

Sky Pollard, head of product at Nuuly, explains that as people’s budgets are stretched, clothing rental services offer a unique value proposition—more affordable access to styles for events big and small. Pollard shares that Nuuly has “experienced remarkable subscriber growth over the past two years and now has over 160,000 active subscribers." All the signs point to clothing rental services sticking around—read on to discover the eight best clothing rental services you can shop all from the comfort of your couch.

Nuuly lets you sample new styles and put together effortless outfits for every key moment on your calendar, whether it’s a wedding, a tropical getaway, or just another day at the home office. Nuuly helps give everyone access to trends, brands, and price points they might not normally have access to or want to commit to long-term.

For a $98 monthly subscription fee, you’ll receive a (reusable!) Nuuly shipping tote filled with six items of your choice. Wear them as often as you’d like, then return to unlock your next box (though if you can’t bear to part with an item, you will have the option to purchase). Many other clothing rental services charge late fees and damage fees, but with Nuuly, you can shop rental pieces without stressing about unexpected fees. Designers and brands vary but include favorites like Anthropologie and Free People.

Nuuly’s focus on sustainability stretches beyond packaging—Pollard shares that Nuuly has a deep bench of repair specialists who keep clothing in rotation by getting out stains, repairing small holes & tears, replacing buttons, zippers, and linings, and shaving sweaters that have started to pill. “Last year, our repairs team made over roughly 250,000 repairs—this gives our clothing even more life,” Pollard says, “and some damaged rentals are repurposed and remixed in collaboration with emerging designers.”

Cost: Plans start at $94/month

One of the most widely known clothing rental services, Rent the Runway offers over 800 brands, taking its claim to fame as the world’s “largest shared designer closet” seriously. Styles range from sizes 00 to 22, but the shining point of Rent the Runway is access to over 22 million member reviews (and counting!)—you’ll be able to review styling tips, photos, and feedback on clothing pieces from real shoppers, making it much easier for you to discover the pieces that fit your needs and style. There are a few more plans and pricing options to choose from than some other services, including:

  • 4 items: $69 for the first month, then $94 per month
  • 8 items (delivered in two shipments): $99 per month for two months, then $144 per month
  • 16 items (delivered in four shipments): $169 per month for two months, then $235 per month

Though reviewers consistently praise Rent the Runway’s fast shipping (often two days or less), others note that sometimes finding the styles you want at the time you’d like them can be tricky.

  • Affordable—under $100
  • Wide variety of designer styles
  • 22 million member reviews
  • Rent-to-own available
  • Various subscriptions options, including one-time rentals
  • Damage fees

travel wardrobe rental

Cost: Plans start at $55/month

All too often, trying to find stylish clothing available in a full breadth of sizes in-store is tricky, especially since so many brands still only offer sizes Small through Large. Fashion to Figure Closet is at the intersection of sustainability and inclusivity: the company’s rental model delivers trendy plus-size fashion right to your door, and shipping is always free. You’ll always have the chance to purchase an item at a discount from the retail price.

Pricing starts at $55 per month, and the company offers two plans for you to choose from: a three-item clothing subscription, or a five-item plan with three pieces of clothing and two accessories. The company offers sizes 12-28 (XL- 3XL), and best of all, the pieces are genuinely stylish and on-trend, which fans of the brand celebrate.

Unfortunately, reviewers tend to bring up themes of poor customer service, so it may be worth considering other services first. For example, many reviews explain that returns made on time aren’t processed quickly, triggering late fees, and others explain how difficult it is to reach customer service agents for support.

  • Unlimited boxes with free 2-3 day shipping
  • Wide range of plus sizes

Perhaps even more than outfits, trying to curate jewelry for special occasions puts a dent in your wallet. Rocksboxs solves this—add a pop of color or a bit of sparkle to any outfit without spending tons of money or committing to a permanent wardrobe addition. Rocksbox costs $21 per month (with shipping included), but you can actually get multiple boxes shipped to you during the month if you’d like. Each box contains three items, and you can wear them and return them, or opt to purchase them with a retail discount and your $21 monthly membership fee applied to your order as a shopping credit.

Though there are a few complaints, many reviewers adore the service, including the fast shipping and quality of products. I’ve also personally been a Rocksbox subscriber for the last several months, and have really enjoyed all of the items (and added many to my permanent collection, oops)—my pro tip is to keep an eye on your inbox and review the items you’ll be receiving ahead of time. That way, if an item ever gets added to your box that you know you’d never wear, you can swap it out for something you’ve been eyeing!

  • Affordable—under $50
  • Hand-curated picks
  • Discounted rent-to-buy option—$21 monthly credit towards purchase each month
  • Unlimited swaps
  • You don’t get to pick what ends up in your box—keep an eye on your inbox to make the swap before it ships
  • Only three pieces per box

If personal styling, or clothing subscriptions with a styling element are your normal vibe, Armoire is the clothing rental service for you. The onboarding process starts with a quiz to give your new stylists a sense of your personal style. From there, each month, your stylist will curate specific recommendations for you to review, and you’ll have the final say on what you receive. And though most clothing rental services require you to send back your current rentals to unlock your next shipment, Armoire lets you keep wearing the pieces until your new order arrives.

Additionally, Armoire gives each subscriber a complimentary one-on-one appointment with a stylist each month. It’s the perfect chance to ask style questions and get tips on accessorizing your new pieces. With rave reviews across multiple platforms (it’s the highest-ranked platform, according to Trustpilot), Armoire is quickly becoming a favorite thanks to the unique member perks and personal styling component.

  • Curated from personal stylists
  • Monthly personalized consultations
  • Classic, maternity, and event plans available
  • You can keep items for longer than a month
  • No accessories to rent—only clothes

Cost: Free to join—fees based on items

Tulerie is a fashion movement more than a clothing rental service; it’s a community-based platform where you’ll rent clothes directly from other Tulerie members. Every Tulerie member is screened through a comprehensive interview process, and if you’d like, you’re welcome to join as a lender and a borrower (so it’s a great way to make a little extra money while staying on top of trends).

Because Tulerie is striving to make sustainable fashion accessible to everyone, every day, there’s no monthly membership fee to join. Becoming a member is free, and you’ll just pay a small fee (for shipping and cleaning) on the individual items you choose to rent. It’s a pretty customizable process — you’ll choose when you’d like it to be delivered and how long you’d like to keep the rental.

Tulerie is a relatively new service, so it has fewer reviews than some of the others on our list. But the company’s garnered media buzz, with attention from Vogue and PopSugar, to name a few.

  • Community-based lending
  • Perks for both lenders and borrowers
  • Only pay per item—no subscription fees
  • Sellers and buyers are all screened ahead of joining
  • Circular and sustainable
  • Relatively new—not as established as other brands

Cost: Plans at $49/month

Gwynnie Bee began as a plus-size-focused company, but now has an inclusive size range from 0-32. We love Gwynnie Bee’s curated capsule collections (current offerings include categories like Casual Day Looks and Now Trending). These make it easy to filter for looks that match your needs and personal style.

However, Gwynnie Bee’s pricing is a bit different than the other clothing rental services on our list. Instead of a monthly subscription fee and a box with a set number of pieces to rent for exactly one month, you’ll choose the number of items you’d like to rent at a time, and be able to keep them for as long as you’d like. Each pricing plan includes unlimited free returns and dry cleaning services, so it’s relatively stress-free to use.

Here’s how the pricing plans work:

  • 1 item: $49 per month
  • 2 items: $69 per month
  • 3 items: $95 per month
  • 5 items: $139 per month
  • 7 items: $179 per month
  • 10 items: $199 per month

Fans of Gwynnie Bee really appreciate the inclusive sizing and variety of styles offered. The main negative given in reviews is a delay between shipments, but all in all, most reviewers agree that it’s worth the wait.

  • Inclusive size range
  • Various plan options
  • Capsules make it easy to curate pieces and personal style
  • Items can be rented for longer than a month
  • Some reviews complain of shipping time

Final Verdict

Best curation : armoire.

Part clothing rental, part personal shopping service, each Armoire membership begins with a style quiz: a three-minute exercise that tailors curated monthly boxes to you.

Style quiz helps with recommendations

Recommendations can be edited before shipping

More than four items per month cost extra

At Armoire , a team of stylists selects merchandise catered to your tastes from brands like Boden, Diane von Furstenberg, and Adrianna Papell. The Armoire subscription includes a one-on-one stylist consultation, held over the phone, and sizes range from zero to 24W, with maternity styles offered as well. The monthly membership starts at around $79 (or $69 for a trial month) for four items, and you can add more pieces to a shipment for an additional fee (or save money by pre-paying for future boxes).

A stylist will recommend clothes to rent, but if you’re unhappy with what’s been selected, there’s time to swap out items before the box ships. And you can shop confidently knowing that your membership fee is driving positive change: Renting clothes from anywhere is more environmentally sustainable than buying.

Armoire ups the do-good factor by partnering with Dress for Success Seattle, an organization that gives back to women in the company’s hometown with job training, professional attire, and financial education.

Best Variety : Rent the Runway

Rent The Runway (RTR), the first big name in clothing rental services, continues to offer more choices than its newer counterparts. RTR Reserve offers one-time rentals on specific items in four- and eight-day increments, while memberships allow you to rent up to four, eight or 16 items per month.

Good selection of formal attire

Option to purchase favorite outfits

Multiple membership options

Must pay shipping to replace items that don't fit

Can be expensive

Rent the Runway shines brightest in its formal and cocktail attire offerings, with designs by Donna Karan New York, Marni, Badgley Mischka, and more. But other options abound, too, and Rent the Runway's blouses, outerwear, pants, and accessories offer plenty of room to enhance your everyday style.

RTR Reserve customers receive two sizes with every order, and if a dress doesn’t fit upon receipt, there’s also the option to replace the outfit for the cost of shipping. But thanks to RTR’s expansive database of user reviews—many of which include photos—finding the perfect fit is generally pretty easy.

RTR Reserve styles start at around $32, and monthly memberships range from approximately $94 to $235. Plus, with the option to purchase any favorites you receive for a steep discount, RTR can help you build a versatile forever closet, too. It’s a user-friendly program with customer service and value that’s hard to beat.

Best Budget : Nuuly

For about $88 a month, the company behind Urban Outfitters, Free People, and Anthropologie allows shoppers to select six styles and keep them for 30 days. The service—called Nuuly—features a wide variety of casual and everyday items, so a month will give you plenty of time to mix-and-match items for a steal.

No commitment

Limited to six styles per month

With a Nuuly subscription, staples—such as high-waisted Levi’s jeans or an Avec Les Filles jacket—will fit seamlessly with the favorites you already have in your closet, while Nuuly’s pre-loved tees and denim will add a vintage touch to your looks. Statement pieces, like a psychedelic Free People jumpsuit, or a sequined Maeve midi skirt, can lend a touch of adventure to the daily grind.

Nuuly also has options for special occasions, with plenty of cocktail dresses and a few formal ensembles available for rent. Laundry and dry cleaning are included with every subscription, and there are no hidden charges for stains or damages. You don't have to worry about delivery or return fees: There's free, two-day shipping both ways.

There’s no limit on the value of the items you can rent, and you can save styles you love in your Nuuly closet, so those clothes will be ready when a new month rolls around. Nuuly is one of the best values in clothing rental, and there’s no commitment, either—you can easily pause your subscription at any time.

Best Luxury : Vince Unfold

From cashmere sweaters to silk skirts, the everyday luxury of California brand Vince offers a refined style that seamlessly moves from office to nightlife. With rental program Vince Unfold, which launched in fall 2018, shoppers can rent four items at a time, choosing from new Vince designs as well as beloved classics.

Option to buy items at a discount

Referral credits

Must save 10 styles to receive first box

The uncomplicated pricing structure and limitless opportunity—four items at a time with unlimited exchanges for around $160 a month—makes Vince Unfold ideal for the fashion-forward subscriber who hates to wear the same look twice. Still, any item you love too much to return can be purchased at a discount rate.

A penchant for online shopping is mandatory: The service requires that you have at least 10 styles saved to the “Virtual Edit Management” feature in order to receive your first box, and recommends keeping a selection of looks saved at all times in order to guarantee quick shipping.

Just like IRL, shopping is a little better with friends—Vince Unfold offers a referral credit for every buddy who signs up using your link.

Best Athleisure : Le Tote

Since 2012, Le Tote has offered users a customized, in-home purchasing experience that rivals the personal shoppers of big department stores. Subscription boxes are offered with or without accessories and start at about $59 a month for a Classic membership or $79 a month for Maternity.

Suggested items can be edited before shipping

Can cancel at any time

Maternity option costs extra

Stylists at Le Tote suggest new styles based on your browsing preferences, how you rated previous boxes, and even the weather forecast for your area.

Once a tote is curated, you have seven days to use the “Tote Swap” feature to customize the box to further meet your needs. Le Tote’s offerings span many departments, including formalwear, office looks, and more. But the service stands out most for its selection of athleisure, a category with increasing global demand that most other rental services overlook.

That means Le Tote is great for anyone testing out a new fitness regimen or simply looking to switch up their gym and loungewear. From Saturday squats to Sunday errands, a crisp Nike jacket, stylish AXS tank, and smooth Beyond Yoga leggings just might put a little extra pep in your step. The affordable price tag and flexibility to change plans, or cancel at any time, makes Le Tote a great value, too.

Best Plus-Size Clothing : Gwynnie Bee

Gwynnie Bee was founded in 2011 as a service exclusively for sizes 10 to 32. Christine Hunsicker, a Princeton grad, launched the company when she realized women who fall into that size range weren’t being served by traditional retailers, despite the fact that they make up the majority of the American market.

Sizes offered ranges from 0 to 32

Free 30-day trial

Gets expensive if renting more than one item at a time

Gwynnie Bee has expanded to include sizes zero through 10, but the priority on outfitting everyone remains one of its biggest differentiators, even as its competitors continue to add plus-size options. Rent one item at a time for approximately $50 a month and up to 10 items at a time for $200 a month.

You can exchange the items as often as you wish. So even if you're on the lowest-tier plan, you can enjoy multiple new styles during each cycle. To maximize efficiency, Gwynnie Bee requires you to keep a minimum number of items in a “Virtual Closet,” so the next shipment is always ready to go when the previous one is returned.

Give it a whirl with no risk: Gwynnie Bee is one of the only companies to offer a free 30-day trial so you can see if the service is for you.

Best for Kids : Rainey’s Closet

Offering five- and 10-day rentals, Rainey's Closet holds plenty of too-cute outfit options for flower girls and ring bearers, with accessories like bows, crowns, ties, and suspenders to top off the looks.

Offers five- and 10-day rentals

Can shop by size, brand, or occasion

No membership option

Dressing kids for special events can be a frustrating process—and not just because of the tears or temper tantrums. When kids grow so fast, it’s hard to justify the cost of an outfit that may only be worn once.

Enter Rainey’s Closet , which found its mission when one forward-thinking mom grew tired of the drama around dressing her daughter for the family's annual photoshoots.

Whether you’re shopping by size, brand, or occasion, there are enough tutus, bright colors, and sequins to make any little fashionista feel special. And, with hassle-free shipping and returns—each order comes with a return label, and laundry is included in the cost—you'll come away from the process pretty pleased, too. Prices vary per item, and there's no commitment (or subscription) required.

There are many options depending on your needs, but Rent the Runway does the best job of providing its members with a broad selection of items for multiple occasions, as well as multiple membership tiers. For those on a stricter budget, Nuuly is a good alternative, while Gwynnie Bee offers the best size-inclusive options, and Rainey's Closet is a great choice for outfitting children on special occasions.

Gwynnie bee.

Best for: Every woman, every size

Why you’ll want it : Gwynnie Bee’s website has stylist-curated categories like work and weekend so members can easily browse clothing for every occasion. The service caters specifically to women sizes 10 to 32 with styles from brands like Calvin Klein, ModCloth, and Eshakti.

How it works : Before you decide to commit to Gwynnie Bee, the company offers a free trial that allows customers to rent two items at a time for one month. After your trial period is over, the pricing increases based on how many items you want to take out at a time. The priciest box allows you to rent up to 10 items and costs $199.

The cost : starting at $49/month

What customers are saying: “Gwynnie Bee is a good service for any woman sizes 0 to 32. I think it’s especially awesome for babes who work in an office environment and need to look put together on a daily basis. I think the business casual options on the site are my favorite of all... Now that I’m not in an office environment, I use it for date-night dresses and casual everyday wear. I use it to expose myself to new brands which can be quite helpful as a blogger, and I also like to use it to try trends that I know aren’t worth spending much money on given how quickly they’ll be out of style again. I think that apartment dwellers with limited storage space can also benefit greatly from the service. When I lived in New York I had to pare down my wardrobe tremendously, and Gwynnie Bee allowed me to still look stylish although I didn’t own much clothing.”— Miranda

You can wear them for as long as you wish within the month and exchange them whenever you want, all month long. Vince Unfold also offers members a discounted price on all its offerings, so you can keep the ones you want or return your items for a new batch.

Simply put, clothing rental services offer shoppers the opportunity to save money by renting a garment or an accessory for a limited time rather than making a one-time purchase. Some of these services are operated directly by designers or brands that are renting in-house items. Others, however, are run by third-parties who function like retailers by curating a variety of labels and brands for shoppers to browse.

Is it expensive to rent clothes?

Cost varies by service, so how much you spend is really up to you. Some rental services are à la carte, meaning you pay only to rent a specific garment or item. (This is most similar to the typical online shopping experience you’re accustomed to.) Other sites function with a membership-based model in which shoppers pay a monthly fee in order to access rental items. You can expect to spend as little as $5 per month up to several hundred dollars to rent a single coat depending on what you’re looking for.

How long is the rental period?

This will also vary, but most sites will make this information very clear, so you don’t have to worry about missing a deadline. A rental window of 30 days is standard, but some more occasion-oriented services might have shorter periods.

What is the return process like? Do I need to wash my item first?

Each service has different rules, but for the most part, you have the easy job. Your items will most likely come with reusable packaging and a prepaid shipping label so that you can easily mail your item back after you’re done with it. Check your site’s rules about washing or repairs, but most companies will take care of that for you. You can just ship back and relax.

What happens if I want to keep my item?

Most services will you give you the option to buy any particular item you just can’t bear to part with. And better yet, it usually comes with a hefty discount.

How to Create a More Sustainable Travel Wardrobe

For some travelers, booking a trip is a great excuse to update their travel wardrobe . But often, the cost of that flowy dress or on-trend bikini is more than the dollar amount on the price tag. According to Earth.org , a website dedicated to environmental data analysis and research, the fashion industry is one of the world’s biggest polluters, accounting for nearly 20 percent of global wastewater and 10 percent of global carbon emissions each year. And it’s not just the production of clothing that’s the issue—each year, humans discard more than 92 million tons of clothes-related waste.

Doing further damage? The fabrics commonly used in fast fashion: Synthetic fabrics like acrylic and polyester are essentially plastic. Derived from oil, the fabrics are produced with an energy-intensive process that involves toxic gasses and chemicals. Plus, with every wash and wear, synthetic fabrics shed microplastics that wind up in the ocean.

While the bleak statistics are enough to make you swear off shopping forever, there are sustainable alternatives to the global fast fashion industry. Between resale apps and thrift stores, vintage and second-hand clothing have never been more popular, and companies across the globe are finding creative ways to repurpose old clothing and textiles. Below, we walk you through how to buy less, shop smarter, and get more use out of the clothes you already own in order to create a more sustainable travel wardrobe.

Reformation creates many of its pieces out of deadstock fabric that would otherwise be tossed out.

Shop sustainable fashion brands

Certain fashion brands have been making strides toward creating a more earth-friendly industry, starting with a shift toward sustainably-produced or recycled fabrics like silk, wool, organic cotton, and hemp—all of which are biodegradable. Brands have begun to innovate, too, creating new plant-based fabrics like lyocell and tencel to use in place of polyester and nylon.

Workout brand Alwrld is among the companies developing entirely new fabrics. Alwrld uses seacell, made from seaweed in a closed loop method, along with its new biodegradable nylon as earth-friendly alternatives to synthetic fibers.

Using sustainably-sourced materials doesn’t mean sacrificing style, either. Made in Los Angeles from rescued deadstock fabrics, repurposed vintage clothing, and eco-friendly materials, Reformation ’s designs are the kind of clothes your suitcase dreams about—perfectly tailored linen dresses, buttery soft silk slips, vintage-inspired mini-dresses, and even formal gowns for special events.

Top indie designers are taking a sustainable approach to fashion, too. With dramatic silhouettes, bright colors, and over-the-top details, Collina Strada brings environmental awareness to runway-ready dresses, bodysuits, and pants by using eco-friendly materials like recycled cotton, deadstock fabric, and rose sylk, a biodegradable fiber made from rose bushes.

When shopping for sustainable fashion, it’s not just the materials that matter. Safe working conditions and fair wages for employees are core to a sustainable business. Kotn , a brand creating effortlessly cool loungewear, only uses cotton grown on small, family-run farms in Egypt . Committed to honoring the people and places where its product comes from, the company uses a portion of its profits to build schools in the farming communities that supply their cotton. Christy Dawn , a brand that creates ethereal, romantic dresses that look as good on vacation as they do at home, also works directly with a farmer collective, using ethically-sourced cotton that’s part of a land regeneration effort that has sequestered 38 tons of carbon from the atmosphere, increased plant biodiversity, and supported a community in southern India with living wages.

Prioritize supporting brands that are transparent about all aspects of production. Based in Los Angeles, Mate the Label is a woman-owned company creating travel must-haves like linen jumpsuits, cozy athleisure , and perfect white T-shirts. The company is committed to ethical business practices that support employees on every step of the supply chain, ensuring that everyone from farmers to designers to tailors earns a living wage and has access to a safe working environment.

Create a capsule wardrobe

An easy way to reduce clothing consumption: taking a minimalist approach and filling your closet with fewer quality items that can be worn repeatedly. Capsule wardrobes are usually made up of 15 to 30 pieces of clothing—look for classic, versatile pieces that can be worn in different settings, dressed up or down with the right shoes and jewelry. Choosing neutral or monochromatic pieces makes it easy to mix and match and multiply your wardrobe. For instance, five tops and three bottoms can create 15 individual looks—perfect for travelers who never check a bag.

To create a sustainable wardrobe, you can work with a stylist to decide what styles, hemlines, and fits suit your look. Alternatively, websites like Cuyana , Everlane , Epoque Evolution , and Vetta offer collections of simple and well-made travel-ready items that can take you from the airplane to a Michelin-starred restaurant in style.

Reclining Airline Seats Are Disappearing From Economy Class

Clothing rental and subscription services like Rent the Runway allow shoppers to expand their closets often, without purchasing dozens of new pieces.

Consider shopping alternatives

Buying pre-owned or vintage clothes is by far the best option for an eco-friendly wardrobe. If you have a specific item, brand, or style in mind, online marketplaces like Etsy , eBay , Depop , and Poshmark are a great place to start. If you’re more interested in browsing a curated selection of vintage goods, stores like Beacon’s Closet , Noisaf Bazaar , and NXC Vintage resell gently used vintage and contemporary pieces.

For those who want to experiment with different styles and trends, clothing rentals and subscription services like Nuuly and Rent the Runway allow users to rent everything from evening gowns to activewear.

Some clothing brands are working harder to turn old styles into something new, too: Re/Done , Urban Renewal , Patagonia Recrafted , and Rave Review sell upcycled clothing, like patchwork denim jeans or coats made out of blankets and duvets, while Sun Child , based in Goa, India, uses old saris to create dresses, robes, jumpsuits, and more. Cuyana just launched Cuyana Revive , a resale platform that allows customers to buy and sell used Cuyana bags and small leather goods, and donate any other used items from the brand, which will be sent to women in need through the H.E.A.R.T. organization.

You can also breathe new life into old clothes by tailoring and upcycling things you already own: For example, put a fresh spin on older pieces with an updated hem length, turning jeans into cut-offs or tailoring a dress into a skirt.

Keep clothes out of landfills

While conscious consumption is key to creating a sustainable wardrobe, it’s equally important to dispose of unwanted clothes responsibly. Check with your local thrift store to see what donations they accept and where any unsold clothing goes. When in doubt, you can always donate to your local Goodwill. If you have items that you’d rather sell, ThredUp will send you a prepaid mailer to fill up. Once it’s received, they’ll photograph, list, and sell your unwanted clothes. You’ll get to keep a percentage of the profits, which you can use as a shopping credit on ThredUp or one of its many partner stores including Gap, M.M. La Fleur, and Reformation. For big-ticket items like designer clothes, bags, jewelry, and shoes, schedule an appointment with The Real Real ; they’ll talk you through the selling process and either schedule a pickup for your items or send you a prepaid shipping label to mail them in.

Items that are damaged or aren’t in a condition to be sold or donated can still be kept out of landfills with recycling programs that turn clothes into textiles, rugs, insulation, and more. Ask about clothing recycling programs at your local farmers’ market or visit RecycleNow.com to search for recycling options by zip code. Some clothing companies like For Days offer a discount for sending in clothes for recycling, while H&M has clothing recycling bins in its stores.

Of course, the most sustainable travel wardrobe is the one you already own. As consumers, the most tangible way for us to make a difference is to buy fewer clothes and wear the things that are already in our closets.

7 Dress Rental Services We Love For 2024

author icon

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here .

We’ve researched numerous clothing rental services — these subscriptions offer a wide range of clothing options and prioritize sustainability.

When it comes to special occasion events like weddings, holiday galas, school dances, or maternity shoots , renting a dress or gown beats buying pieces that only get worn once. Clothes that sit in the back of our closets do not add value to our lives, and neither do cheap fast fashion pieces that quickly go out of style and pollute the planet. Renting is an affordable way to wear designer dresses and it’s a more sustainable option. A win-win. 🏆

Why consider a clothing rental service?

Clothing rental services are an easy way to access high-end designer clothing at an affordable price. You’ll be able to experience high quality luxurious items you may not typically wear, without the hefty price tag. You can also experiment with new styles and trends without committing to a long-term purchase and without any added stress to your wallet or the environment.

The environmental impact caused by fast fashion is huge. Thankfully, renting clothes is a more sustainable option as it extends the lifespan of clothing items, promotes a circular fashion economy, and reduces fashion waste through the reuse of garments. Trying to reduce wardrobe clutter or simply don’t have enough space in your closet (or in your luggage when you travel)? Clothing rental services help provide a temporary wardrobe without having to worry about storage or traveling with lots of clothes.  Oftentimes for special occasions, you’ll find yourself wearing an outfit once and never again, but clothing rental services make high-end special occasion wear more practical.

Below are our favorite sites to rent a dress or designer clothing online. In curating this list, we’ve prioritized clothing rental services that offer subscriptions for a wide range of clothing options, and that offset their transportation emissions. Many offer subscriptions (we love Rent the Runway’s monthly subscription for everything from occasion wear to seasonal pieces!) if you are looking to invest in staple pieces and round out your wardrobe by renting occasion wear.

Prefer to buy? Here are our guides on sustainable jewelry and handbags for ethically-made and fair trade accessories, or secondhand shops if you prefer thrifting. And for designer options, check out these sustainable luxury designers for pieces you’ll love for years to come.

Rent the Runway will also send you a backup size (just in case) and the chance to purchase the piece if you fall in love. Their sustainability efforts are also impressive, with the brand offsetting 100% of their carbon emissions to and from shipments, and diverting over 90% of waste from their warehouse operations from landfills. Choose from RTR’s three standard plans or rent à la carte for your next big event.

As avid travelers, we firmly believe in packing light (as light as possible, in fact). Flying with just a carry-on and packing cubes can save tons of time and energy – and help you side-step some major headaches, including lost baggage and heavy suitcases you have to drag up a flight of stairs.

But when you only have a small suitcase, and as a result – only a few pieces to work with – figuring out what to pack and how to plan outfits can be tricky.

How do you keep your wardrobe incredibly limited without surrendering your style? How do you pack only a few key items, while maintaining versatility in your outfits?

Working from a capsule wardrobe is your best bet. Sticking with basic separates in neutral colors goes a long way for creating a variety of outfits with limited items.

If you are packing for a combination of business and pleasure in the same trip, it becomes all the more important to choose well-made styles that can be dressed up or dressed down with a few accessories.

How do you build a tight wardrobe without adding too many pieces? How do you keep your suitcase lean without choosing only safe, boring and basic options – and steering clear of going too far the other way, packing stylish pieces that you’ll only ever end up wearing once?

Let’s look at a few essential tips…

And don’t worry. A capsule wardrobe doesn’t need to be made of  dull all-black outfits . You can use the guidelines below to create a versatile travel wardrobe featuring a variety of clothing styles ( this  is how to mix and match prints).

Read this to learn how to pack light stylishly  for any destination!

The answer is to follow one simple rule – the rule of 3. This is more than wearing every piece you pack at least 3 times. Pack all items with the intention of wearing each item in a variety of outfits that work in at least three different occasion types.

This could be dressy, professional, and casual. Or it could be sexy, relaxed, and polished. It all depends on your lifestyle and the nature of your trip. When you consider using each piece with this kind of versatility, you’ll be able to build a stylish capsule wardrobe for any trip, and have tens of great outfits on-hand for any occasion.

Choose from one of eight  travel capsule wardrobes to help you plan for your trip!

OUTFIT 1: Necklace | Tank Top | Jeans | Bag | Sandals   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Necklace  |  Shorts | Sandals   OUTFIT 3: Blazer | Necklace | Pouch  | Skirt | Flats

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: One Piece, 3 Ways

Take, for example, a pretty tank top like the wine-colored one shown above. It can be paired with a relaxed skirt and a blazer for a casual business event.

However, just as easily, it can be dressed up for an evening out on the town with a slim pair of jeans and a cool rocker-inspired choker and cross-body bag .

And third, the tank looks just as stylish with a beach babe pair of cut-off denim shorts, boho-inspired travel sandals and a straw hat – on point for a summer musical festival.

Take a look at this post to see how you can make 3 weeks worth of outfits with just eight pieces of clothing!

OUTFIT 1:   Earrings | Bag | Blouse | Sunglasses | Joggers | Flats   OUTFIT 2: Tank | Earrings | Lipstick | Bag | B o o t s OUTFIT 3:   Shirt | Tank | Necklace | Backpack | Shoes

The Travel Capsule Wardrobe: Guidelines for 3 Uses

Now that you know how to use one piece in three different ways, follow these guidelines to make the most of your outfits.

Be Meticulous With Fit

Stick to flattering, figure-skimming silhouettes. Avoid anything with too tight of a fit, as it won’t appear relaxed or chic. Likewise, avoid anything with a loose fit since it can read as sloppy and unpolished. Don’t be afraid to tailor your clothing, especially when it’s something you absolutely love!

Stick to Classic Styles With a Hint of Trend

Choose fairly neutral colors and simple cuts and patterns for versatility and longevity, but look for unique twists that add visual interest. This could be lace detail, embroidery, funky zippers – anything that expresses your personality.

File Into 3 Occasion Buckets

When you’re shopping for new items or pulling items from your closet to pack, mentally file each item into its occasion bucket. Is it sexy, relaxed, and girly? Or is it business-casual, classic, and refined? Hint: this rule also works really well outside of travel packing for your everyday wardrobe, too.

Don’t Forget to Map Your Outfits

Particularly with separates, make sure you can pair each item with several other items you’ve packed. It doesn’t help you if you can wear a cute embroidered blouse to the museum, a nice dinner, and on the plane but haven’t any bottoms you can pair with the top.

Have Fun With Accessories

Follow the same rule of 3 with accessories, including bags, shoes, jackets, and jewelry. Shop for high-quality, versatile pieces that are fairly classic in design but have a fun flair. For shoes, all you need are three pairs: one for sightseeing, one for a special activity, and a bonus pair.

These are the most cute and comfortable shoes for travel !

creating-a-travel-capsule-wardrobe

OUTFIT 1: Blazer | Dress | Necklace | Crossbody | Flats   OUTFIT 2: Hat | Sunglasses | Handbag |  Shoes   OUTFIT 3: Jacket | Earrings | Lipstick | Pouch |  Sandals

For example, this black and white striped dress is modern and airy with a slightly French nod. It can be dressed up for a summer night with bold earrings and a trendy belt. It also pairs well with polished accessories – like a cream blazer and ballet flats – for a cultural outing. Or, pair the dress with white sneakers , a summer hat, and a super-cute canvas tote for a breezy look to wear when visiting a local farmers market.

Ultimately, the accessories help give this dress a different feel for each occasion, but the guidelines above are used for each outfit. Each of the accessories are basic in their feel, but they have a trendy or stylish twist and can be paired with other outfits for other occasions.

With this simple rule, you can streamline your travel packing, change the way you look at your everyday wardrobe, and transform how you shop in the future.

I like to create a colour palette and stick to it. My next trip is neutrals with a splash of pink. Black pants, beige pants, white tops, a pink jumper and a black blazer/jacket and a gorgeous scarf with a pop of pink.

Love this mix of colors Jacki, sounds amazing!!

I Tried Armoire & Rent The Runway To Revamp My Work Wardrobe – Here’s Which Brand I Stuck With

Michelle nix.

In partnership with Armoire.

Lately, getting dressed for work has begun to feel like a full time job. I’m not quite sure how I used to style office looks for every day of the work week, but it’s safe to say that skill has fallen by the wayside – even with a flexible in-office schedule! When a friend recently raved about the clothing rental service that she called a “lifesaver,” my ears perked up. I checked out two of the most popular options – Armoire and Rent The Runway – before ultimately deciding which service was right for me. Discover their key differences (and which brand I went with!) in this edition of throwdown…

Monthly Clothing Rental

The players: .

First up, we have Armoire , a company built by women (and a few kick-a** men) who “understand what it means to be busy, social and simultaneously stylish.” I’m putting them up against Rent The Runway , one of the first and most established clothing rental services that was founded in 2009 as a convenient and affordable way for women to access high-end designer clothing and accessories.

Variety Of Clothes Offered

Armoire: Armoire boasts an impressive selection of clothing options, as it features a mix of premium brands and designer pieces. Their collection covers a broad range of styles, from casual everyday wear to athleisure and formal attire for special occasions. I was amazed by the selection of work clothes that felt both office appropriate and also cute (a concept!). I grabbed several pieces from brands like Rag & Bone, Equipment, White + Warren and Joie that ended up being far more versatile than I had imagined – several of my coworkers have made comments about my new wardrobe, as have a couple of friends when I’ve worn my ‘work’ clothes to weekend social events.

travel wardrobe rental

‍ Rent The Runway: Rent the Runway is primarily known for its high-end designer garments that users rent for special, more formal events. While the site boasts gorgeous evening gowns, trendy statement pieces, and accessories, I didn’t find its selection of everyday wear to be as practical for work and my day-to-day. While I’d recommend it for special events (especially if you’re into stylish necklines and cutouts), I preferred Armoire’s selection for the office.

User experience & customization.

Armoire: Armoire offers a quick style quiz that helps understand your preferences and style goals before its algorithm and personal stylist expertise curate picks to your taste. Their website is both intuitive and easy to navigate, and I appreciate that you can customize your recommendations by category, occasion and season. On top of that, Armoire's community feature lets you connect with other members for inspiration and styling ideas. While I didn’t think I’d utilize this tool all that much, I’ve actually found it to be a really fun part of the Armoire experience.

travel wardrobe rental

‍ Rent the Runway: Rent the Runway has a very extensive collection, which is of course a good thing for shoppers, but a bit overwhelming to browse. The site doesn’t provide as much customization based on personal preferences as Armoire’s does, but you can still refine your search by occasion, size, color, and style. Rent The Runway also includes customer reviews and ratings, which I always enjoy perusing before making a decision online.

Armoire: Armoire offers different subscription plans to cater to various needs and budgets. Their pricing structure includes options for unlimited items per month, as well as plans with a set number of items. The lowest plan begins at $89 for your first month (you’ll get 4 items each month on this plan) and the unlimited plan is $139 for your first month. With Armoire's unlimited plan, you have the freedom to swap out items as often as you like, giving you access to a wide variety of clothes over the course of the month.

‍ Rent the Runway: Rent the Runway currently offers three plans: 5 items ($94/month), 10 items ($104/month for 2 months), and 15 items ($149/month for 2 months). While I believe RTR used to offer an unlimited plan, it no longer seems to exist. I found this to be a pretty big bummer – because I was mostly shopping for work clothes, I need a lot of pieces over the course of the month!

Overall, I’ve found Armoire to be the most convenient option I’ve explored for work clothes and everyday life. While Rent The Runway can certainly save you money when it comes to shopping for a special event, I didn’t find it as practical for everyday clothes. I’ve upgraded to Armoire’s unlimited plan and have loved everything about the experience – finding chic pieces is simple, ordering them is a breeze, and the returns are super easy, too. If you’re booked and busy but still care about looking effortlessly stylish, I can’t recommend it enough.

Use code 1TQEUNLIMITED for 44% off your first month of the unlimited plan or 1TQE7 for 25% off your first month of the 7 item plan.
