Top 10 Most Expensive Bicycles In The World [Updated 2023]

February 8, 2020 //  by  Phil

Bicycles are generally an affordable means of transport that the public as a whole can afford to buy.

However, with each general rule, there are exceptions. There are bicycles that are more expensive than cars, although they are numbered.

Here are the top 10 most expensive bicycles in the world.

1. Trek Butterfly Madone – $500,000

trek butterfly madone - most expensive bicycle

Coming in first place is the Trek Butterfly Madone which costs around a whopping $500,000!

You can definitely buy a good sports car with that price tag.

This bicycle is an artwork by Damien Hirst and it was bought at an auction for that price.

Although it’s beautiful, some animal rights activists called it barbaric due to the fact that the bike utilized real natural wings from butterflies.

This Butterfly Madone was sold at an auction to raise funds for the Lance Armstong Foundation.

2. Trek Yoshimoto Nara – $200,000

most expensive bicycles of all time

Second on the list is the Trek Yoshimoto Nara which costs around $200,000.

This bicycle was sold in the same auction as the one Butterfly Madone was sold in.

It was previously ridden by Lance Armstrong in some of the big cycling events, and it’s made of carbon fiber.

It was also auctioned off to help the foundation.

3. KAWS: Trek Madone – $160,000

most expensive bike in the world all time

Not far behind is KAWS: Trek Madone which was launched in affiliation with the Livestrong foundation’s fight on cancer.

Lance Armstrong presented this version of his Trek Madone bike, and it was customized by the well known artist KAWS.

This bike costs $160,000.

4. Aurumania Crystal Edition Gold Bike: $114,000

what is the most pricey bicycle ever made

You would think that a bike that’s mostly plated in gold would be the most expensive bicycle here.

Aurumania’s Crystal Edition Gold Bike costs $114,000, which is a lot lower than the Butterfly Madone (but that one was mostly priced higher due to charity).

This bike was first released in 2008 by the Scandinavian company Aurumania. It was built by hand and was plated with 24 carat gold. It was the most expensive bicycle at the time.

The Aurumania’s showpiece was decorated with over 600 individual crystals from Swarovski. It also has a Brooks brand leather saddle and handlebar grips made from brown leather.

5. Trek Madone 7: Diamond – $75,000

most expensive bike in the world

In the same auction as the other Treks, this Trek Madone 7 – Diamond was also sold for a whopping $75,000.

This bike has 14 carat yellow and white gold with seven 1-carat diamonds.

6. Chrome Hearts X Cervelo: $60,000

chrome hearts x cervelo

On sixth place, you’ll fine the Chrome Hearts X Cervelo mountain bike which costs around $60,000. The regular edition would cost about 10 times cheaper.

This bike was released by Casa de Chrome in collaboration with Cervelo. It’s expensive because of the artwork, silver cross, leather seat and motif plugs.

7. Montante Luxury Gold Collection – $46,000

montante luxury gold collection

Next up, you have the Montante Luxury Gold Collection which comes at $46,000.

This bike’s parts can be separated into 4 main areas, the Golden Leaf, the Wood, Swarovski stones and also the Python.

They use a 24 carat golden leaf to cover the frame and other components. They use high quality wood for the anterior and posterior fenders, and covered further by elm lacquered leaves.

Even the borders have a 24 carat golden leaf. As for the pedal supports, they are made from hardwood walnut.

Apart from that, they have 11,000 Swarovski stones used all around the bike. As for the python element, they actually use a Brazilian ball python leather to cover various parts including the saddle and handlebar.

It’s no wonder it’s so pricey.

8. eRockit’s Electric Assist Bike – $44,000

erockit electric assist bike

On 8th place, you’ll find the most expensive electric bike on this list.

Unlike regular electric bikes, this eRockit assist bike is really fast, and can go up to 50 miles per hour. The usual electric bikes would cost a thousand or up to a few thousand at most.

This eRockit electric bike costs $44,000, which is a lot higher.

9. Litespeed Blade Bike: $40,788

litespeed blade

Next up, you have the Litespeed Blade Bike that costs around $40,788.

It’s made of really high quality bike material, including titanium allow and carbon fire.

Thanks to its design, it’s capable of going really fast, as far as bikes go.

10. Phanuel Krencker’s ‘Bicylettes de Luxe’ – $34,425

bicyclettes de luxe

The last bicycle to be featured on this top 10 list is none other than Phanuel Krencker’s Bicyclettes de Luxe .

It was shown in the North American Handmade Bicycle Show of 2011, and was made by the French designer Phanuel.

This bike was designed with chrome and carbon fiber to provide both safety and elegance.

One cool feature is that the bike has gold plated decals, a custom calfskin and even a Baccarat crystal head tube badge.

Most of the bikes here are one of a kind or of a limited edition, and they’re simply good to look at. Not everyone can afford them though.

This list of most expensive bicycles may change in the future, if they decide to auction off even more expensive bikes, or create bikes that are futuristic.

The most expensive bike in the world! Take a look back at Lance Armstrong's 'Butterfly Bike'

The most expensive bike in the world! Take a look back at Lance Armstrong's 'Butterfly Bike'

For this evening's Bike at Bedtime we're heading back in time to check out Lance Armstrong's Trek Madone, designed by British artist Damien Hirst and ridden by Armstrong on the Champs Elysées at the 2009 Tour de France. This bike eventually sold for half a million dollars.

2022 Trek Madone Lance Armstrong Damien Hirst

The original idea of this bike was to mark Lance Armstrong's return to cycling after initially retiring in 2005, and the selling price of this one-off creation makes it the most expensive bike in the world. It was one of seven of Armstrong's Trek bikes that went up for auction, which in total raised $1.3 million for LiveStrong . Many of these still feature in lists of the world's most expensive bikes .

> Lance Armstrong auction: Damien Hirst 'Butterfly bike'

Hirst is well known for a series of artworks in which dead animals are preserved and he made no exceptions to this recurring theme when designing Armstrong's Trek Madone.

Hirst used real butterfly wings lacquered onto the frame and said, "I wanted to use real butterflies and not just pictures of butterflies, because I wanted it to shimmer when the light catches it like only real butterflies do, and we were trying not to add any extra weight to the bike."

Unsurprisingly, the project attracted some negative attention, with some animal rights activists branding the use of real butterfly wings as 'barbaric'.

The Bontrager wheels also feature real butterfly wings. They're rim brake wheels which we don't see in the pro-peloton anymore.

Armstrong's Trek Madone was equipped with a SRAM Red groupset, their newest top-end road groupset at the time. SRAM launched its Red group in 2007 as the "lightest, fastest shifting, and most adjustable on the market."

The most recent SRAM groupset to be released is the Rival eTap AXS for road and gravel riding that sees most of the features of higher-level SRAM Red eTap AXS and SRAM Force eTap AXS – including wireless electronic shifting – at a more accessible price. It currently costs £1,448.00 at Sigma Sports .

To say the least, a whole lot has happened in Armstrong's life story since the 2009 Tour de France. In 2013, he eventually confessed to doping during his career. You might have heard!

Armstrong has recently appeared back in cycling news due to Klaas Lodewyck, sports director at Remco Evenepoel’s Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team, comparing Evenpoel's determination to succeed with that of Lance Armstrong.

He said, “It may be a wrong comparison, but in terms of character I do see similarities between Remco and Lance."

This is the Most Expensive Bicycle in the World

The most expensive bike in the world, according to the Guinness Book Of World Records, is the beautifully titled Butterfly Bike, named so by its creator, British artist, Damien Hirst.

The reason for its name, according to reports, is that Hirst used authentic, real-life butterfly wings when varnishing the frame… we cannot confirm if any of the air-borne insects were harmed in the process of making the bicycle.

Sold at an auction at Sothebys, New York, for a whopping $500,000 , the wing-wheeled contraption was ridden by former great Lance Armstrong (before all the cheating stuff) during the final stage of the 2009 Tour de France. It positively flew across the finishing line at the Champs-Elysees in Paris, helping its rider to an overall third place finish (before that position was then re-populated by Bradley Wiggins due to said cheating stuff).

PICTURED: Bicycle Anatomy 101 Mug (Limited Edition)

World’s Costliest Bicycle Sold at a Charity Auction

To everyone’s credit, the bike was sold to raise funds in aid of Armstrong’s successful LiveStrong cancer charity, which provides free support services to anyone afflicted by the condition. The disease famously affected Armstrong at the height of his exploits.

Although the use of real butterfly wings on the most expensive bike ever may shock some observers, followers of Hirst and his art shouldn’t be surprised. The Devonian-based master creator has made his name in using animals as part of his exhibitions – most notably stuffing an entire tiger shark and suspending it in an encased glass case filled to the brim with formaldehyde in the 1990s. If you’re willing to park a shark in a vitrine, plastering the wings of (hopefully already deceased) butterflies onto a bike frame is no big deal.

One thing’s for sure though: this bike is a real object of beauty and may well end up on my shopping list if I was a lottery winner !

Most Expensive Bikes Ever

The Butterfly Bike passed the previous holder of costliest bike in the world in November 2009. That title allegedly belonged to the Trek Yoshimoto Nara, which fetched a cool $200,000. Also sold at Sotheby’s, and also ridden by Lance Armstrong – this frame was decorated by the aforementioned Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, who embellished it in a cartoon of some feisty characters in boxing gloves.

Despite the heavy costs – Tour De France bikes are notoriously light. According to the UCI (cycling’s governing body) the minimum weight must be 6.8kg – and you can be sure that those specs are pushed to the limits. Professional cycling, if nothing else, has a reputation for doing what is necessary to find those edges.

The Best Bike in the World?

It might be the most expensive bicycle of all-time, but is Damian Hirst’s Butterfly Bike really the best bike in the world? Comment below with your favourite bike.

5 Most Expensive Bikes on the Market

5 Most Expensive Bikes on the Market

No matter what’s on your Christmas wish list this year, chances are even the most ardent bike lovers can only drool over the likes of these bikes. Taking an aspirational peek at some of the most expensive bikes on the market, we have to ask, how much would you be willing to spend?

Trek Butterfly Madone

Even the cheap and cheerful Madone bikes retail at eye-watering prices ranging from £3,000 to £10,000, but when the model that was used by Lance Armstrong in the 2009 Tour de France race went to auction to raise money for a cancer charity at Sotheby’s, complete with a little extra touch of artwork from Damien Hirst who placed real butterfly wings on the rim, it fetched a gob-smacking $500,000. The piece of ‘art’ provoked a fair amount of outrage for the cruelty inflicted on the butterfly, but at least it was all for a good cause.

Trek Yoshimoto Nara

A unique set of custom accessories as well as technical excellence of a bike seem to be a prerequisite for a jaw-dropping price and such was the case with the Trek Yoshimoto Nara. The concept bike was decorated by renowned Japanese pop artist, Yoshitomo Nara, and once again Sotheby’s worked their magic, selling the bike for $200,000 in aid of the Lance Armstrong’s Live Strong foundation in 2009.

trek bike butterfly

Auramania Crystal Edition Gold Bike

A bargain by comparison with the first two on this list, the Auramania Crystal Edition Gold Bike is the first on this list to command a high price on its own rather than for a celebrity involvement. That said, it is not without a gimmick factor. With every visible part of the bike plated in 24-karat gold, the bike also featured 600 Swarovski crystals and a coveted Brooks saddle. Fortunately, at an impressive price of $103,000, the limited-edition bike also came with a 10-year guarantee. So that’s nice.

Chrome Hearts X Cervelo Mountain Bike

Something of a hike-up on the plain old Cervélo P4 TT bike, which costs around $6,000, this Chrome Hearts edition, refinished with artwork, a leather seat, rhinestones, a silver cross, and the iconic Chrome Hearts motif, went on the market in 2010 for $60,000. That’s quite the statement piece.

trek bike butterfly

eRockit’s Electric Assist Bicycle

In 2008 eRockit introduced what was the world’s most expensive electric bike. Accessible in terms of use but certainly not in terms of the price. Going up to 50mph it was fast, streamlined and skinny, if slightly strange looking. At the time electric bikes were a novelty and they generally retailed between $1,000 to $5,000 but this one was described as a ‘human hybrid’ – referring to the combination of electric engine and performance of its human rider – and cost an inspiring $44,000 for its whizzy technology.

Trekking Bars – What They are and Why you Need Them

February 27, 2016 by Wade Shaddy

trekking bars

Trekking bars are not a new incarnation of an energy bar. Trekking bars are actually bike handlebars. Sometimes referred to as butterfly, hybrid, or touring bars, trekking bars originated with touring bikes in continental Europe and spread across the world to the UK, the United States, and other countries. Trekking bars are designed for comfort and efficiency on long rides, and typically found on touring bikes.

What they Are

Touring, butterfly or trekking bars work similarly to drop bars with different hand positions. Instead of your hand positions going up and down, trekking bar hand positions go forward and back. You don’t reach down with trekking bars, but instead reach farther forward. This position creates a more stretched out torso, which does tend to lower you a bit, but not as much as drop bars.

Long Distance Bars

Trekking bars are designed for long distance, multi-day cycling so using them on a bike meant for faster rides is not ideal. The wide side position also offers better control at slow speeds and over rough terrain, especially when heavily loaded.

Why You Need Them

The most important criteria for a touring bike is comfort . Trekking bars offer more comfort than drop bars in most touring situations.  This isn’t just about the saddle. How is the whole bike going to feel with trekking bars, day after day, mile after mile for the duration of your tour. Trekking bars also give you more room for things like bells, mirrors, and extra gear.

Avoid Numb Hands

When your hands are in the same position for hours, and especially if you’re riding everyday for a week or more, the pressure on nerves can cause you to lose sensation in your hands. Avoiding numb fingers, hands, arms and wrists are one big advantage of trekking bars.

Four or More Hand Positions

Road bikes with drop bars provide a rider at least three main hand positions. While there are technically four hand positions on trekking bars — they also have a wide spectrum of space between positions. If you want to experiment, almost unlimited combinations can be found that may be comfortable for you. If you’re a rider who needs to move your hands frequently when riding, having so many combinations for hand position is ideal. Even for those who don’t have injuries or ailments that require position changes, it’s a good idea not to stay in one position for too long to prevent strain, injuries, pain, and numbness.

Climbing Concerns

Another benefit of trekking handlebars over drop bars is that the large “side” hand position gives you more leverage when climbing with a heavy load. But on the flip side of the climbing argument is the fact that having the bars curve back to the middle can interfere with your knees if you like to climb out of the saddle.

Never Upside Down

Trekking bars can be flipped over to ride on either side (neither side is really considered upside down), and they can be changed so that the opening point is closest to your body, or flipped so that the opening is at the farthest point from your body. Both of these set-ups work fine. It’s a matter of personal preference or what feels natural to the individual rider more than anything else.

Stem Control

The stem on your bike will regulate how trekking bars are installed on any given bike. Extremely short stems such as on a touring or cruising bike, typically benefit from the handlebars facing forward. Long stems typically require the bars facing back toward your body. A simple stem swap can make them face either direction.

Stable Touring Bike Feel

If you come from a road or mountain biking background, a fully-loaded touring bike with trekking bars may at first feel cumbersome and heavy, but you’ll soon learn that the design is in its stability .  You will be pleasantly surprised at how spacious a touring bike feels with trekking bars when compared to your road or mountain bike.

Switching to Trekking Bars

Road bikes are not set-up, nor are they easily compatible with racks and other equipment and are not typical candidates for trekking bars. One option is adding trekking bars to a mountain bike, but it too may require considerable effort. Depending on what you have now and how everything is set up, you might have to switch out brake levers and shifters. The other concern is stem length, which will may or may not need to be changed.

What They Can Do For You

Although they may look funny, even cumbersome, trekking bars can add more comfort to longer rides by providing you with more versatility for hand positions, gear, and bike handling. They’re not supposed to look aerodynamic or cool, and after taking a spin on them you’ll appreciate what they can do for you.

Other Bar Designs

If you’re not sold on trekking bars, other types of bars, such as the mustache bar, also adds comfort without the extra bulk of the trekking bar. It’s somewhere between a drop bar and a flat bar and worth looking at if you’re considering long distance riding. What type of handlebar you put on your bike is a matter of personal preference, pure and simple. It’s mostly a matter of trying them out and seeing what you like.

Armstrong's Damien Hirst bike fetches half million

trek bike butterfly

Lance Armstrong's Damien Hirst-designed 'butterfly bike' fetched a cool $500,000 during an auction at Sothebys in New York on Sunday in aid of the rider's LiveStrong cancer charity.

The one-off creation by British artist Hirst was ridden by Armstrong during the final stage of this year's Tour de France. It's selling price makes it the most expensive bike in the world.

Hirst used real butterfly wings, lacquered onto the frame of a Trek Madone.

Bono, the lead singer of Irish band U2, had approached Hirst to create the bike for Armstrong, with the view of it being auctioned for the LiveStrong cancer charity. Art fan Armstrong also has a Damien Hirst artwork in his collection.

"The technical problems were immense," Hirst said when the bike was unveiled in July.

"I wanted to use real butterflies and not just pictures of butterflies, because I wanted it to shimmer when the light catches it like only real butterflies do, and we were trying not to add any extra weight to the bike."

The project attracted some negative attention, with some animal rights activists branding the use of real butterfly wings as 'barbaric'. Hirst has often courted controversy, having gained notoriety with his infamous shark suspended in formaldehyde in 1992.
