Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamp Measurement and Installation Guide

The best place to find the correct seatpost clamp size is on your bike manufacturer's website. Be as specific as possible when searching on the manufacturer's website or on a search engine — include the bike's year, model, material, and other key identifiers. If information can't be found, you can find the correct diameter by using a caliper on the frame. The seatpost clamp should match the diameter of the seat tube on your frame — not the diameter of the seatpost. Another method is to print our Wolf Tooth 1:1 Seatpost Measurement Guide at 100% scale. This guide was designed for both Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamps and QR Seatpost Clamps. It includes a measuring tape as well as a size diagram that can be used with your existing seatpost clamp. Wolf Tooth machines seatpost clamps in six different sizes and nine anodized colors. Learn more about seatpost clamp measurement and installation below, or click here to shop now.

Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamp Measurement and Installation Guide

NOTE 1: The lip of your seatpost clamp should be on top so you are comparing the largest diameter of the clamp with the circles in the Seatpost Clamp Measurement Guide . Make sure there is no tension on the clamp bolt.

NOTE 2: Frames may vary slightly from the nominal diameters due to tolerances and paint thickness. Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamps will fit on frames with round tubing that are within +/- 0.5mm of the specified size. For example, a 34.9mm clamp will fit frames with a seat tube measuring from 34.4mm to 35.4mm in diameter.

How to use the seatpost clamp measurement guide

Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamp Measurement and Installation Guide

1. Use calipers to measure the seat tube ( not the seatpost). The calipers show a measurement of 34.9mm, which tells us the seatpost clamp is 34.9mm.

Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamp Measurement and Installation Guide

2. Another way to measure is to print our our 1:1 Seatpost Clamp Measurement Guide . Simply print and cut out the guide's measuring tape to find the right diameter seatpost clamp for your bike.

Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamp Measurement and Installation Guide

3. Our 1:1 Seatpost Clamp Measurement Guide also features a seatpost clamp size diagram to help you find the right clamp size for your bike. This diagram works for both Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamps and Quick Release seatpost clamps. Place your current seatpost clamp over the diagrammed circles to find your fit.

1. Gather these materials: This includes grease (or carbon paste/ copper paste if you have a carbon or titanium frame), your seatpost, a 4mm hex torque wrench, and your new Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamp. NOTE: Here we are using carbon paste because the Otso Cycles Voytek is a carbon bike . We recommend carbon paste for carbon bikes and copper grease for titanium bikes.

Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamp Measurement and Installation Guide

2. Once you've prepped your seat tube with grease (or carbon paste in this case), you can install the seatpost clamp on your bike. Be sure to line up the slots on your frame to the slots on the clamp (if available). Some frame slots are on the front of the seat tube, others are in the back. If your frame has multiple slots, align the slot on the seatpost clamp with the center of the slots.

3. Install the Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamp onto your frame. Ensure the clamp's inner lip is fully nested onto the seat tube. Now you're ready to install your seatpost.

4. Install your seatpost to the desired height. Using your frame and/or seatpost torque specs as a guide, set the torque with a 4mm hex torque wrench. A good rule of thumb is to never exceed 6 Nm. If you're using a carbon seatpost or dropper post, you may need to set the torque at a much lower measurement to prevent crushing/binding of materials.

1. Gather these materials: grease (or carbon paste if you have a carbon bike); your seatpost; a 4mm hex torque wrench, and your new Wolf Tooth QR Seatpost Clamp. NOTE: Here we are using carbon paste because the Otso Cycles Waheela C is a carbon bike .

Wolf Tooth Seatpost Clamp Measurement and Installation Guide

2. Prep your seatpost. Use grease if you have a steel or aluminum seatpost and frame. If the seatpost and frame are made from carbon or titanium, do not use grease . We recommend carbon paste for carbon bikes (as pictured above) and copper grease for titanium. Before applying anything, check your seatpost and your bike manufacturer's recommendations.

3. Install the Wolf Tooth QR Seatpost Clamp onto your frame, taking care to line up the slot on your frame and the slot on the clamp (if available). Some frame slots are on the front of the seat tube, others are in the back. If your frame has multiple slots, align the slot on the seatpost clamp with the center of the slots. Ensure the inner lip of the clamp is fully nested onto the seat tube.

4. Install your seatpost to the desired height and close the clamp. Using your frame and/or seatpost torque specs as a guide, set the torque using a 4mm hex torque wrench. A good rule of thumb is to never exceed 6 Nm. The Wolf Tooth Quick Release Seatpost Clamp memorizes torque, so the torque that you set during installation will always be applied whenver the QR clamp lever is closed. If you're using a carbon seatpost or dropper post, you may need to set the torque at a much lower measurement to prevent crushing/binding of materials.

Trying to wrap your head around seatpost clamps? Then you’ve come to the right place. We’re going to go through what these bike components do and the different varieties of clamp. We’ll then look at the different sizes they come in and how to measure your bike so that you choose the right one.

What is a seatpost clamp? What does it do?

Seatpost clamps are the unsung heroes of the cycling world. Under normal circumstances, you’d never even know they were attached to your bike. But, if they fail, or they’re the wrong size, or the wrong type, then it can turn a great day out cycling into the day from hell.

So, let’s start with a quick definition.

What exactly IS a seatpost clamp and what does it do?

The job of the seatpost clamp is to hold the seatpost firmly in the seat tube.

Without it, you’ll find that your saddle will sink lower and possibly spin around as you sit on it and pedal along. Certain types of seatpost clamp also provide an inherent security feature, stopping thieves from stealing your saddle and seatpost.

The job of the seatpost clamp is to hold the seatpost firmly in the seat tube

Unfortunately the name “seatpost clamp” is a bit of a misnomer.

Why? Well, the clamp doesn’t actually clamp onto the seatpost itself. Rather it clamps onto the seat tube where the seatpost slots into it.

When the seatpost clamp is fitted onto the tube and tightened up it fixes the seatpost at that height and orientation.

The two main types of seatpost clamp you need to know

Seatpost clamps come in two flavors: a bolt clamp and a quick-release (QR) clamp. Both varieties have a collar that fits around the seat tube and a method of tightening this up firmly.

trek marlin seatpost clamp size

The bolt clamp uses an Allen/hex head bolt to close up the clamp. This obviously requires a hex wrench to operate the bolt and therefore adjust the height of your saddle. This makes it a somewhat trickier process to carry out and means that you need an appropriate tool to do the job. It does however have a major advantage in that it stops opportunistic thieves from stealing your saddle and seatpost when your bike is left unattended.

trek marlin seatpost clamp size

The quick-release seatpost clamp has a lever-and-cam operated mechanism that allows for quick and easy adjustments to be made to your saddle height. It also means that you don’t need to carry tools to do the job. The lever and cam assembly engages the clamp around the seat tube, fixing it firmly in position. Open the lever and the cam releases its hold, allowing adjustments to be made. This allows for on-the-fly variation in your saddle height (particularly useful for mountain bikers) but can be tempting for thieves.

Is there a standard size seat post clamp?

Unfortunately not! Seat post clamps come in a variety of sizes. However there are some that are more commonly used than others.

There are six seatpost clamp sizes available and these are all measured in millimeters:

You’ll see from the list above that there are some very small size differences between some of the clamps. So, how do you know which one you need for your bike?

How do you measure what size seat post clamp you need

There are three ways to determine which size of seatpost clamp you should get:

Check the manufacturer’s specification for your bike

Check the existing seatpost clamp for a marked size.

  • Measure your bike’s seat tube external diameter

If you have access to the original specification for your bike, then it might show the size of seatpost clamp that you need. Sadly, most published specs never go down to this level of detail. Any, anyway, if you’re like me you probably threw the paperwork out years ago!

trek marlin seatpost clamp size

The next step is to check the existing seatpost clamp. Sometimes these have the size printed on the collar. In some cases they’ll also have a useful indicator of the maximum torque you should use when fitting them.

Measure your bike’s seat tube external diameter with digital calipers

The best way to check what size seatpost clamp you need is to measure the seat tube where the clamp will be fitted.

This is easy to do, but requires some accurate measuring with either a ruler or a set of digital calipers .

The measurement that you need is the external diameter of the seat tube.

This is different from the seatpost diameter and also the internal diameter of the seat tube – both of which will be smaller than the diameter that you require.

The measurement that you need is the external diameter of the seat tube

Seatpost clamp common sizes chart

Now that you have the information and the measurement you need to choose your new seatpost clamp, here’s an easy chart showing where to buy each size. Decide whether you want a bolt-on or quick-release style clamp and click the corresponding button next to the diameter of your bike’s seat tube.

Weird Trek seat post CLAMP size

  • Add to quote

On a 2015 Trek Fuel EX 9.8 what is the 'Trek specified' seat post clamp size? I can tell you, it is not a standard size. It's bigger than 34.9 and it's smaller than 36.4 (they are the nearest standard sizes). Measuring it gives a variety of results depending on where you put the vernier; it varies slightly around its diameter as you'd expect. Saying that, is measures around 35.3. So, there's your answer you may say, 35.3. But you try buying an aftermarket seat post clamp that size, you can't. Searching the internet as I have, I cannot see an actual Trek specified size for the clamp. FWIW, a Trek Fuel EX 9 has the same size clamp, I guess most of the range did/have.

found a 36.4mm seatpost clamp Had the same problem with my wife's 2019 Trek Fuel Ex 5. Ordered different clamps from different places and had to return all of them as none would fit. They were all too tight even the 34.9's. Measured the inner diameter of the stock clamp and the outer diameter of the frame's seat tube: both are 36.4mm. Eventually found the Bontrager quick release seatpost clamp available in a 36.4mm size. Ordered and it's on it's way. Hopefully this post helps future googlers/mtbr's with the same issue. (EDIT: clarifying the seat post outer diameter is 31.6mm but the seatTUBE outer diameter and seatpost clamp inner diamters are 36.4mm)

I eventually found Bike Yolk who make quite a range of sizes and very light too. I got a 35.6 one which was perfect. So much for Trek telling me that it's a 34.8! https://www.bikeyoke.de/en/squeezy.html

I also bought a 34.9 clamp and it's too small. Will a 35.6 definitely work? I have an X-Caliber 2019. It has a Trek qr clamp as standard.

trek marlin seatpost clamp size

I would think it'd be way easier to measure the outer diameter of the frame than the clamp. Just put a post in there and use calipers. The clamp compresses, so off the bike it'll measure differently depending on where you measure than when in use. If all else fails, call any Trek dealer and they'll get you sorted.

Thanks. Actually, my poor wording, I did measure the outside of the frame seat tube, but it's inconsistent as you'd imagine. Also, I have today contacted Trek and they said 34.8. That's correct, 34.8 (a size that doesn't exist). Go figure.. Thinking about it though, it may well be 34.9 as the seat post is very loose in it until the clamp is tightened up, so when tightened my 35.3 reading may well actually go down to 34.9. Anyway..

Did Trek offer to sell you a clamp? BTW, the google seems to think a 34.8mm clamp exists. Miche makes one, but on the clamp it has a label that reads 34.6-35. I'd imagine most/all the 34.9 would work the same even if it's not labeled as such.

Thanks, I agree.

Some common sizes are: 31.6mm seat post takes a 34.9mm seat post clamp 27.2mm seat post takes a 31.8mm seat post clamp

Better late and irrelevant than never?

Yup just like your post. Who cares if Trek says the clamp is 34.8mm. My point is that 34.9mm is a common clamp size for a 31.6mm seat post which is also common for a modern mtb. No need to send him on a rabbit trail to search for a 34.8mm clamp. Just run down to a shop and get a 34.9mm.
