Trek-Segafredo reveals 2023 team kits

With November in the rear view mirror, a new cycling season rapidly approaches and professional teams are putting together the final touches for a new campaign.

Often, that means a new look for the new season. Trek-Segafredo just shared its new kits for both its men’s and women’s WorldTour teams for 2023, and while not a complete departure from 2022, the kits are a nice refresh of a familiar theme.

Both squads are sticking with predominantly white on the torso, accented by a line of color across the chest that is red for the men and blue for the women although the women now have a darker shade of blue across the front.

This year, the team is also extending color to the sleeves, with the women getting a lighter blue similar to last year’s color on the sleeves.

But the biggest change is to the back of the jersey.

Both designs feature an eye-catching pattern across the back alternating between checkerboard and horizontal lines in black over a base of the kit’s dominant color, red or blue. The team should be easy to pick out in helicopter shots among the sea of similar jersey designs.

The bibs have been slightly changed, but don’t try to break down any fashion norms of the peloton. The band of color around the leg is now thinner, and the base color is a navy blue.

Santini is once again creating the kits. Fans looking to pick up one of their own will be able to starting December 5.

The Trek Segafredo 2023 kit is based on the 2022 kit but with some design additions. The men's team kit keeps the red while the women's kit remains blue. The jersey is white with a stripe across the chest where Trek is still rendered in white. The sleeves are red or blue. A design detail added to the rear of the jerseys is a repeating pattern of alternating lines and chquered pattern.

The bibshorts and bibtights are black with the bibshorts having a coloured stripe on the leg ends. The repeating pattern used on the back of the jersey is also used on the straps of the bibshorts and bibtights.

Trek-Segafredo to become Lidl-Trek from Tour de France onwards

US WorldTour and Women's WorldTour teams rebrand from June 30

Trek-Segafredo men's and women's teams are set to rebrand ahead of this year's Tour de France and Giro d'Italia Donne after attracting major new title sponsorship from supermarket chain Lidl. 

The move reported at the start of May has now been confirmed by the team in an announcement issued on Tuesday. The rebrand to Lidl-Trek will come into being on June 30, just before the Giro Donne and the men's and women's Tours.

The exact duration of the team's deal with Lidl hasn't been confirmed, though reports have suggested that the sponsorship would run beyond the 2024 season. Italian coffee company Segafredo will move away from its title sponsorship role, the team confirmed.

"We are excited to work with a team that is committed not only to excellence in cycling but also to the sustainable development of athletes in a family team culture," said Lidl board member Jeroen Bal.

"We are convinced that healthy nutrition and an active lifestyle – shaped by sports and exercise – strengthen people's well-being. Just as our Lidl products are accessible to everyone, cycling is a sport for everyone and suitable for anyone who wants to be more active in everyday life. We want to share this message with as many people as possible."

The team, which traces its roots to the Leopard Trek outfit that began in 2011, have been on the lookout for a new title sponsor with Segafredo's contract due to expire at the end of 2023. 

Segafredo joined in 2016 and renewed for another three years in 2019 as the women's squad was launched, before adding another two years from 2022. The reports indicate that Segafredo will step aside early to allow Lidl to begin their backing at the time of maximum exposure at the Tour de France.

This is not Lidl's first involvement in professional cycling. The German-based supermarket company, which has a strong presence throughout Europe, was a co-sponsor of the QuickStep team from 2016 to 2021 and is a current partner of the Flanders Classics series of Spring races, including the Tour of Flanders. 

The terms of Lidl's sponsorship are not yet known but Het Laatste Nieuws has suggested there will be "a hefty budget increase". 

The men's team, who were 12th in the 2022 UCI rankings and currently sit sixth in the 2023 standings, only have 11 riders under contract for 2024, with room to manoeuvre in the transfer market.

Giulio Ciccone is one of the team's key leaders, along with the Classics pairing of Mads Pedersen and Jasper Stuyven. The veteran Bauke Mollema is on a long-term deal, while 22-year-old Mattias Skjelmose is making his breakthrough at the top level and Belgian talent Thibau Nys is perhaps not far behind. 

The women's team have just as many riders on board, with 11 of their 14-strong roster under contract through 2024. Team leaders include former road race world champions Lizzie Deignan and Elisa Balsamo , current time trial world champion Ellen van Dijk, plus Elisa Long Borghini and up-and-coming talents in Shirin van Anrooij and Gaia Realini.

The Trek-Segafredo men’s and women’s teams will be dividing the vast majority of their time between the Trek Madone SLR aero road bike and this lightweight Trek Émonda SLR in 2023. Let’s take a closer look at the Émonda…

The current Émonda has been around for over two years now – doesn’t time fly? – with Trek calling this incarnation its fastest-climbing bike ever.

The Émonda has always been the lightweight road bike in Trek’s range, but the US brand also focused on aerodynamics in the development of the latest model.

The designers say they spent most time working on the front end of the bike – the bar/stem, head tube and down tube – because that’s where you can make most aero gains, testing both with and without a water bottle in place.

Trek says that the flagship Émonda SLR platform is 60 seconds per hour faster than its predecessor on flat roads – in other words, on the older bike it would take you 61 minutes to ride as far as you could in 60 minutes on the newer one – and 18 seconds per hour faster on an 8% gradient (Trek’s notional rider upon which these figures are based is 70kg and puts out 350 watts for the hour). 

Trek says that the Émonda SLR isn’t as aerodynamically efficient as its Madone platform but that it's marginally ahead of the Domane endurance bike.

Using deep-section tubes adds weight over round tubes so the current Émonda SLR that Trek-Segafredo riders use is slightly heavier than the previous model, but the frame still comes in under 700g. The designers say that the slight weight penalty is still worth it for the net gain in speed in most circumstances thanks to improved aero efficiency.

In order to hit its weight, strength and stiffness targets for this bike, Trek says it had to use a new kind of carbon fibre within the layup – which it calls 800 Series OCLV carbon.

Trek isn’t keen on giving away too many secrets but says that from a fibre-type perspective, OCLV 800 is 30% stronger than the material it uses for its OCLV 700.

Trek-Segafredo riders use handlebars, stems, seat posts and saddles from Trek’s in-house Bontrager brand.

The bar and stem are separate units here and the hoses for the hydraulic disc brakes run externally before entering the frame at the top of the head tube.

There are no gear cables or wires to worry about because Trek-Segafredo riders use SRAM Red eTap AXS groupsets with wireless shifting. They also use Quarq SRAM Red AXS Power Meters.

Team riders can choose between 48/35, 50/37, 52/39 and 54/41-tooth chainsets and 10-28 or 10-33 12-speed cassettes.

The wheels are from Bontrager: RSL37, RSL51 or RSL62, depending on the terrain, conditions, and rider preference. The number in the name refers to the rim depth in millimetres. All of these wheels use DT Swiss 240s internals with Ratchet EXP 36-point engagement.

The wheels are fitted with Pirelli P-Zero tyres. The team uses tubeless, clinchers, and tubulars.

The team use Time XPro-10 pedals, Time being a brand that’s now owned by SRAM, and Wahoo Elemnt Bolt and Roam bike computers.

Interesting to see the pro team bikes are sans integrated bars. I know people who have started to get replacement bars from trek after the recall. I decided to keep mine instead of getting the temp replacement but to see the team with a different set up raises eyebrows.

It's possible that the reason is that many pros will use 150-170mm stems with narrow bars, it's not worth tooling up to manufacture the whole assembly for that size, which hardly anyone will buy, whereas it's possibly cheaper/easier to do smaller runs of longer stem & narrow bars separately.

Moscow Palace of Soviets – Soviet architectural giant

Moscow Palace of Soviets is one of the most famous unfinished architectural projects in history. The huge (the biggest and tallest in the world) building would have become the symbol of the victory of socialism, the symbol of a new country and new Moscow . This project is still amazing in our day.

The idea of building the Palace of Soviets was proposed by Sergei Kirov at the First Congress of Soviets, December 30, 1922 (also this Congress announced the establishment of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). The idea found the widest support among the delegates.

But the realization of the idea began almost ten years later when in June 18, 1931 in the newspaper “Izvestia” open competition to design the Palace of Soviets was declared. In the same year, December 5, the symbol of old Russia – Moscow Cathedral of Christ the Savior was blown to clear the place for the new symbol of the Soviet Union. The cathedral was visible from almost anywhere in Moscow in early thirties. New architectural symbol was supposed to be visible from any place in Moscow.

As a result, five groups of architects became the finalists of the contest. The group of Boris Mikhailovich Iofan won the contest. The project of Iofan did not immediately take the form familiar to all lovers of architecture of the Stalin era. The first sketch in 1931 was as follows:

And finally the version approved in 1939

The 316-meter palace was to be crowned by the 100-meter statue of Lenin. The total area of the building was to be 11 hectares, and weight – one and a half million tons. Before the World War II the base of high-altitude part of the Palace was built, the construction of steel frame started. After June 22, 1941 concrete, granite, steel and other construction materials were required for completely different purposes.

After the war several skyscrapers of less size were built in Moscow. The foundation of the Palace was used during the construction of the world’s largest swimming pool. And in the nineties the Cathedral of Christ the Savior demolished in December 1931 was restored on the same foundation.

And what would it be a great view if this building was built after all!
