Where to hunt hog.

On BookYourHunt.com we follow the standard practice of saying “wild boar” when we are talking about the species in their natural range (Eurasia), and “hog hunting” when we refer to the animal outside it’s natural range (mostly USA). Some wild hogs descend from domestic porkers that somehow escaped the slaughterhouse, others - from original wild boars released by hunting clubs, but whatever the reason, hogs are abundant in the South and parts of the West of the USA.

Price distribution

Hog hunting opportunities start at $200-$300 and continue to just over $1,000. The price often depends on whether or not it includes the use of sophisticated (and expensive) equipment like night vision sights and off-road vehicles. The availability of public land nearby (most guided hog hunting takes place on private land) can also influence the price. Many oufitters offer hogs as a combination hunt together with turkey, deer, and other game.

When to hunt hog.

Invasive species like hogs are legal to hunt all year round. Most hunters, therefore, prefer to save the regular hunting seasons for other species, and hunt hogs in the off season. Summer can present challenges such as meat preservation, given the heat, and tall standing crops may also be a hindrance. Hunts in December to April, with bare fields and chilly nights, may be the best option. When you have free time and desire to go for an affordable big game hunt, hog hunting is there for you.

Hunting methods All hunting methods (13)

If hogs are outlaws for whom all means are appropriate, it doesn’t mean you can’t use traditional method weapons. From continuation of European nobility classic hunts with packs of hounds and bladed weapons, to bow and rifle hunts by stalking and baiting, wild boar offers many exciting hunting opportunities. However, most hunters choose the options that are not usually available for other species. By far, the most popular method of hog hunting is at night using rifles equipped with thermal or night vision scopes.

Why hunt Hog?

Hog hunting is a necessary measure to control their population. As invasive species, they damage the natural habitat of the land, and pose a threat to many native species. They can also cause severe damage to crops. In addition, the flesh of a wild hog is not only delicious, but healthier, with less fat and cholesterol than domestic pork.Hog hunting is a good introduction into the world of hunting for someone who takes up the chase in adulthood with little or no previous hunting experience. In most cases, it offers just the right balance of challenge and success for a first-timer.

FREE RANGE TX HOG HUNTING WITHIN TEXAS 2HRS FROM DFW

Hunters ask is the hog meat good to eat  & take home - (provided by texas parks & wildlife) .

Yes, meat from feral hogs is extremely tasty and much leaner than pen-raised pork. The meat from older boars may be tougher and rank tasting if not prepared adequately.

As with all pork, care should be taken and the meat well cooked. Otherwise, it should be prepared just like market hogs. The slower the meat is cooked, the more tender and tasty it becomes.

Description: (Provided by Texas Parks & Wildlife)

Feral hogs may appear basically the same as domestic hogs and will vary in color and coat pattern. A mature feral hog may reach a shoulder height of 36 inches and weigh from 100 to over 400 pounds. The extreme larger hogs are generally not far removed from domestication. Males are generally larger than females; however, their legs and snouts are usually longer and they have a larger head in proportion to the body. Their body is covered with long, stiff, grizzled coloured hairs, long side whiskers, a longer straighter tail, and a nape on the neck giving the European hog a razorback, sloped appearance.

The crossing of European and feral hogs often produces an offspring with some European characteristics. Feral hogs are more muscular than domestic hogs, and have very little fat.

Additionally, the hairs of European appearing hogs and their hybrids frequently have multiple split ends. The young are born a reddish colour with black longitudinal stripes. As they mature, the coat color becomes predominantly dark brown or black.

Top 11 Best Hog Hunting Trips

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Our Associate portal can be found here

Did you know that six million hogs are roaming around the United States alone? If this isn’t reason enough to get up and plan a hog hunting trip, then let me give you one more. Hogs are destructive beasts that transmit diseases and tear down crops. Now, every year hunters get to add hog hunting to their calendars, and its time you do the same!

In this article, I will take you through the best hog hunting trips that you should consider. It doesn’t matter whether you are a seasoned hunter or a beginner, I have you covered. These are the top ten hog hunting trips that you must take to get the full experience.

1. Driven Hog Hunts in Europe

In Europe, you get to have a whole new experience when it comes to hog hunting. Most of the time, you will have a well-organized driven hog hunt that will be accompanied by a Traditional ceremony known as the last drive. Trust me, it doesn’t get better than this, especially when you are in a group of around six or more.

Driven hog hunting in Romania or Bulgaria will incorporate the use of hunting dogs, which is just exceptional. You also get to experience the beautiful scenery in remote Europe. However, you need to be careful; you don’t get distracted when the drive starts.

In Europe, most of the hog hunting is mixed with other game hunts for a more fun experience. You must have appropriate clothing because it gets cold. Warm clothing is advisable to ensure that you don’t run into some sticky situations.

What I found interesting about hog hunting in Europe is the abundance of hog hunting agencies do all the paperwork for you. They provide you with all the necessary paperwork, including a shooting license. So you forgot to carry your gun or ammunition? No problem; these agencies have you covered. Everything is made simple and convenient, thus letting you have a good driven hog hunt experience.

2. Hog Hunting in Texas

According to botanists, Texas could be home to over two million hogs making it the perfect destination. What is more bizarre is that the population has been on the rise and is not expected to slow down anytime soon. Some organizations are contemplating the use of toxicants to try and control the population increase of these invasive brutes.

Seasoned hog hunters love Texas because the state has minimal restrictions since they want to reduce the population of the hogs. You get to hunt these creatures all year round without limitations and no bag limits. What makes it more fun is the fact that you could shot from a helicopter and hunt at night.

If you are a beginner, then you shouldn’t lose sleep, there are several experienced guides and ranches around . They offer hog hunting trip packages at affordable prices, and you get to learn from experienced hunters with years of experience.

Texas is among the top on our list due to the highly-rated guides and numerous feral hogs that make the entire experience worthwhile every time. Every location in Texas brings in a new special experience, and you have to remember to have fun.

3. Hog Hunting in Florida

When you are a hog hunter in the United States, no other state other than Florida will offer you a different hunting environment and landscape. This is a swampland that is full of massive gators that bring a whole new feel to hog hunting.

From a glance, many people tend to avoid Florida due to the huge gators, which is normal, but not for a hog hunter. The good news is that there is no limit to the harvest that you can get when you are on private lands.

You need to book a hog hunting trip with an experienced guide on private lands to get the most thrill and excitement. The whole gator scenario just makes hog hunting much more interesting if you ask me. You get an environment that only a few dare to venture, and it’s just marvelous.

4. Hog Hunting in Hawaii

If you have a hunters list, then Hawaii needs to be at the top of that list. Although known for pristine beaches and beautiful mountain volcanos, Hawaii is a top destination for hog hunting. Why not get to enjoy the traditional luau while hog hunting?

With Hawaii, however, the first thing you will need is an experienced guide. This is because all the different regions have separate firearms and hunting laws. Navigating through the restrictions can be a nightmare to many hunters, and you might just end up abandoning the entire trip.

Ensure that you get an experienced guide who has a ton of positive reviews. If previous hunters were satisfied with the guide, then you will too. You don’t want to get to Hawaii and spend your hog hunting trip sitting on some beautiful beach with a drink in your hand.

5. Hog Hunting in Oklahoma

Bordering Texas, Oklahoma is one of the must-visit destinations for hog hunters. It is home to more than 400,000 hogs and prim land that offers a new experience. What makes it great is the fact that it isn’t overrun with hog hunters.

In Oklahoma, you get vast hunting lands that make it worthwhile to use hunting dogs. Hug hunting is much more fun with vast land because you get great kills every time. The excitement of killing a hog after a long chase is unexplainable. The blood-thirsty hunt for a creature this massive is just out of this world.

Many counties in Oklahoma will let you hog hunt all year round without any strict limitations. If you need to hunt large hogs, then consider moving to the eastern and southern sections. You will get to hunt huge feral hog that is a worthy kill every time.

6. Hog Hunting in California

In California, you get to go hog hunting all year round with no bag limit and very few regulations. It’s a hunter-friendly state that has lots of hogs that make the experience worthwhile. You could always take the time to admire the 900-miles coastline while hunting.

California, the Golden State, lets you book guided hog trips in private lands that have a huge population of hogs. The wild boar loves California due to the wooded hills, open flatland, rolling hills, and brushy canyons.

Ensure that you enjoy the weather while hug hunting and just admire the scenery. California is a beautiful state that will leave you planning for the next trip. It is also worthwhile to get an experienced guide who can show you the ropes and ensure that you get your trip’s worth.

7. Hog Hunting in Alabama

With just a small game license, you get to enjoy hog hunting in Alabama. What I found interesting about Alabama is the size of the hogs. My first hunting trip to Alabama and I bagged the biggest kill of my life. If you must know, I haven’t broken my record for over a decade now.

Since I want you to get the best experience, here is a little tip for you. All 67 counties have hogs, but the southern part homes the bulk of the population. The hogs in the southern regions are concentrated in one location, giving you the perfect hunting spots. Let’s see if you can get to break your record of the biggest hog kill using this tip.

Ensure that you bring your large caliber firearm when you decide to visit Alabama. Some of the hogs weigh half a ton, and you need to be ready. When hug hunting in Alabama, you are bound to come across some of these huge beasts.

8. Hog Hunting in Louisiana

If you love night hunting, then Louisiana should be on your bucket list. There is no bag limit in an area where hogs thrive due to the warm and wet climate. In Louisiana, you get to go all out and bag as many hogs as you can all year round.

There are more than 700,000 hogs in Louisiana, ensuring that you get a worthwhile experience. It is the ideal location for beginners who are looking to register their first kill. The regulations are not strict, and you get some of the best-experienced guides.

What is interesting about Louisiana is the prime lands full of feral hogs that seem to strive in those regions. Due to the no bag limit, you get the most out of your experience. Hunting in packs is more suitable in Louisiana because there are a lot of hogs concentrated in different places all over the state. Which is quite an experience for anybody who has tried it before.

9. Hog Hunting in Georgia

We just had to wrap out the list with the home of the legendary Hogzilla, a 1000 pounds hog killed back in 2004. Georgia has been a prime destination for hog hunters since then, and almost everyone plans on visiting at one time or another.

There is no restriction on the private lands, and all you have to do is book a guided trip. You also get to pursuit the hogs on public land with affordable permits making Georgia an ideal place. Due to the minimum restrictions, you get to enjoy adrenaline-pumping action night and day.

Have you hog hunted in the night before? If you haven’t, then you are missing out on a lot. Hog hunting is much more interesting at night, and the experience is so different from day hunting. Book the trip and find the next Hogzilla if you can.

10. Hog Hunting in Missouri

Known mostly for turkey and whitetail deer hunting, Missouri doesn’t disappoint when it comes to hog hunting. The southern part pf Missouri state features a lot of waterways that make it a suitable hog habitat. There are so many rivers down in the south making hog hunting almost too easy.

However, if you are used to massive hogs, then you might get shocked. In Missouri, the pigs don’t reach an enormous size, and you can leave that six-caliber at home. Small-size hogs are just as exciting to hunt.

The good news is that there are many hogs in the south of Missouri, and you won’t get disappointed. You don’t need a guide if you are a seasoned hunter because you can always spot a hog down by the rivers easily.

Understand that the Midwest region of Missouri has scarce feral hogs. If you want to enjoy your experience, then just stick to the south. Missouri is an excellent place for hog hunters who don’t want to travel for long distances to start hunting.

11. Hog Hunting in South Carolina

The coastal region of South Carolina is home to large numbers of hogs. The exciting thing about South Carolina is that the pigs get concentrated in some parts making hunting a lot easier. The farmland in these areas gets destroyed by these feral hogs, and farmers will appreciate your help.

In South Carolina, you don’t need any kind of license when in private land. All you need is a guide to help you navigate the different hog hunting regions. Hog hunting laws in this region are nor restrictive, and you can get hunting almost immediately you get there.

The old South Carolina plantations offer vast areas for feral hog hunting as well as other game animals. You will have an exciting time hunting other game apart from hogs while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

Carry a large caliber gun when visiting South Carolina because you might just end up killing a bigger game than hogs. Yes, this only happens when you stumble upon a different game, but it happens a lot. Be careful so that you don’t get turned around from hog hunting when in South Carolina.

What you need to remember when hog hunting is to have fun. If you enjoy the outdoors, then you probably know that it’s about the experience and not the outcome. Take your time to admire the beautiful scenery and make new memories. Hog hunting as a family can be an incredible bonding experience that will live on. However, before you start your hog hunting journey, ensure that you have the right licenses worked out and that you have read our beginner’s guide . Happy hunting!

Texas Hog Hunting

With a true dedication to the removal of wild hogs, Prone Outfitters represents the best of Texas hog hunting: No limits, no hidden fees, and 100% free-range hunts. After years of experience and thousands of harvests, Prone’s clients have likely killed more FREE-RANGE wild hogs from the ground than any outfit in existence.

Wild hog skulls lined up on back of pickup truck. After math of Prone Outfitters Texas Hog Hunting

  • No Trophy Fees

100% Free-Range

Spot and Stalk

Thermal hog hunting.

Prone Outfitters Thermal Hog Hunts combine a target-rich environment with a hunting style that has proven to be 100% effective throughout thousands of trials.

Spotting (Read More...)

Used as a monocular, Prone’s thermal image scopes allow up to 1,400 yards of heat detection in complete darkness. Because wild hogs feel comfortable during the night, our large wheat fields turn their primary feeding grounds into a wide-open death trap.

After spotting a group (sounder), we make our move in a single-file line to limit our troop’s silhouette against the night sky. With the wind in our favor we creep through the open fields and compose the remainder of our game plan on the fly. Reaching a distance that borders hand-to-hand combat is an art-form, and we paint with blood!

We’ve made it to 30 yards and everyone’s nerves are through the roof. Your guide QUIETLY arranges your group in a formation dependent upon where and how many wild hogs are in range.

As your guide moves behind the group to give any last-second instructions, you steady your aim and the safeties come off. You wait for your guide to call the shot and then 3... 2... 1... SMASH!

After your shot at glory we’ll either be jumping for joy because you crushed an entire family of wild pigs! Or we’ll be crushed because we just spent an hour stalking a group of pigs for unsuccessful target practice. None-the-less, more wheat fields are only minutes away!

hog hunting trips

Along with unlimited predators and small varmints, this Texas hog hunt is unlike any fully-guided experience available.

What to Bring

  • Accessories

Aside from wind direction, quiet clothing is the single MOST IMPORTANT factor when within 100 yards. If you want to be successful from close quarters, which is the entire idea of this style of hog hunting, DO NOT bring clothing that makes noise. Summer time will be 75+ degrees at night. Throughout all other seasons, you should be prepared for warm and cold weather. Camouflage is welcome but not necessary.

***Double-up on hoodies and long underwear before you bring a loud jacket or pants!!!***

With minimal amounts of wind, and/or taking out large boars, rifles have proven to be an extremely effective weapon. Semi-Autos are welcome, but controlled shooting will be enforced!!!

  • 30 Caliber or Larger

With wind of 10+ mph, shotguns can do some major damage as well. If we can get two or three hunters within 30 yards of a group of 20 pigs, something is going to die, and typically it won’t just be one. **Not recommended on Stand/Feeder Hog Hunt**

  • 00 Buckshot
  • Hybrid Buckshot/Slugs
  • Low Power or Open Sights
  • Extension Tubes are Neat

Pistol and Bow

If you want to try your hand at extremely close quarters and uncomfortable situations, we can do this style of hunt with pistol and bow!

*Shin-guards and helmet not supplied*

**Scroll Up for ‘Accessories’**

We need you as quiet as possible in the field. While these items can all be beneficial, if you do not know how to use them properly they become more of a nuisance than helpful.

  • Gun Light Attachment (White, Red, or Green)
  • Shooting Stick
  • Small Backpack (If we end up on an hour-long stalk you might want water, more bullets, or your stress ball.)
  • Your own night vision or thermal scopes.

Winters, Texas

Our best hog property is a working cattle ranch that covers over 2,800 acres in Central Texas. Large wheat and soybean fields, massive amounts of water, tons of cover, and a hefty supply of cattle feed put this hog ground in the top 1% in the country.

Prone Outfitters sets no limit on how many pigs you can kill. It’s real hog hunting, not a PETA convention!

Prone hunts 100% free-range wild hogs! Fenced in pig hunts do nothing to actually help solve the wild hog problem.

Wild hogs shouldn’t have an extra price tag just because of their size. With Prone, you are purchasing a service, not a limited number of trapped pigs under 50 lbs.

Part-time guides and outfitting services fill the Texas hog hunting market. Prone’s team loves what they do, and because hunting is our full-time job, we spend countless hours in the field preparing for your arrival.

Wild Hog Problem

Though some claim to be the “Best Hog Hunting Outfitters in Texas”, read more below as we unravel the misinformation that has flooded the Texas hog hunting market.

Wild Hog Population (Click Me!)

With an estimated population of over 4 million, wild hogs have likely traveled every ranch in Texas. However, that does not mean those properties are fit to sustain a consistent wild hog population. Consequently, this is the main reason most Texas outfits have moved to fenced in operations.

Through our own research, we've found that over 85% of Texas hog hunting outfitters hunt inside of cages or "hog-proof" areas. These pigs are trapped, released from a trailer, then sold to you in a WILD hog hunting package. In other words, you could hunt pinned hogs in your home state for a similar price and experience.

Trophy Fees

Harvest limits and trophy fees consume this industry. However, Texas hog hunting should be focused on solving the problem rather than employing methods discouraging maximum removal.

Property Size

Small properties lead to inconsistent success rates and short hunt times. If property size isn't displayed, assume high-fence or minimal property. Just how many guided hog hunts can one run on a 600 acre property?

Stand/Feeder Hog Hunts

While Stand and Feeder hog hunts are cheap, they are about the most useless method of hog hunting possible. Such is the reason most guide services move to the fenced-in properties to begin with. Even on some of the best hog ground in the country, shooting one pig per day on a stand and feeder hog hunt would be above average.

Along with the   QDMA , Prone feels the transportation and release of live feral hogs should be banned, and ask that you do not contribute to the madness!

If you want real hog hunting in Texas, book your hunt with an industry leader trusted by thousands of hunters across the country. Texas hog hunting isn’t our hobby; it’s how we make our living. It’s after dinner and before we put on our blood-stained jammies.

Testimonials

"There guys are great to hunt with, plenty of places to hunt and no shortage of hogs! Definitely a good time!" Darrell S.
"Matt took us out the other night and put us on a monster of a pig. I would highly recommend the guys over at Prone to anyone looking to book a pig hunt." William S.
"My son and I had a great hog hunt with Nate in Stamford. He got us on a bunch of hogs. Stalking with the thermal sight was awesome. Got within 15 yards of a bunch of them. Saw tons of deer, turkey, hundreds of rabbits and heard lots of coyotes also. We will be back again for sure." Rick C.

We believe in providing our hunters with the thrill of the hunt. We are a free ranging ranch and do not have animals inside a fenced area. no guarantees are offered.

THE HABITAT

We are located in Knox County, the most dense area of wild hog population in the United States.  The terrain ranges from dense mesquite pastures to rough cedar break canyons laced with fresh spring-fed creeks to acres and acres of cropland. Most of our property is perched on the rim of the scenic South Wichita River canyons where the abundant wild game has easy access to water, cover and food. Check out Google Earth aerial shot, coordinates: 33deg 38 min N and 99deg 35 min. W to see the terrain.

On the Ranch’s hog hunting areas, we set up strategically placed elevated 4 x 6 blinds, tripods, pop up blinds, and corn spinners. Once you arrive at 2:00 pm you will confirm with your email the signed waiver with one of the staff, get settled into your accommodations, and go through “Hog Orientation 101” with one of the Guides and be shown the hunting area.   At this point, you are basically “on your own” to get back to that area and start your hunt. The next 2 days one of the guide staff will meet with you to make a plan for the next hunt.  Although during warm sunny days the hogs take a “siesta”, and most of the time after some late-night hunting you will want to do the same. We recommend staying on the “hogs schedule” but you may want to prearrange a spot and stalk in another hunting area for an additional fee.

One of the biggest misconceptions first time Hog Hunters have about hogs is that by their appearance and unclean habitat that they are “dumb”. This is far from the truth. A hog’s intelligence level is higher than a dog. Their keen sense of smell is greater than a deer along with their keen hearing. The only advantage hunters have is that a hog’s eyesight is poor. A hog is a very nomadic type of animal–here today–10 miles away tomorrow not committed to a set daily habit. With all these traits it makes for one of the most difficult animals to pattern to hunt. Hogs move very fast and can go from 0 to 30-35 mph in matter of seconds. For hunters up to the challenge, who can handle “boar fever”, the satisfaction of accomplishment is greatly rewarding. Along with other game animals the females are the best eating, the boars are the best trophies and biggest challenge.

THE RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT

  • Clothing suitable for the weather, camo and scent lok are recommended. Orange is not recommended or necessary.
  • Comfortable hunting boots. Snake boots are always recommended.
  • Rifle with scope and as far as size…. A .223 is NOT   recommended to be successful in killing hogs.  We suggest at least a .243 with a 150 grain bullet
  • Scope mounted Rechargeable Green light offers more clarity (available for rent $50 for entire length of stay from Ranger Creek)
  • Vehicle capable of handling rough ranch roads. 4WD/4 wheelers/UTV’s are an asset.
  • Game cleaning, skinning, and butchering tools (knives)
  • Coolers. Ice is available at the Main Lodge for $2.50 per bag

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT HOG HUNTING AT RANGER CREEK RANCH

This question-and-answer section is meant to prepare our hunters to hunt “Ranger Creek Style”.

Q: How do you normally hunt hogs at Ranger Creek?

A:   Evenings and well into the night from a blind unless you are hunting with thermals with a guide.

Q: Can they be hunted during the day?

A: Yes if there is natural daylight feeding activity. Sometimes hogs will feed during the day when it is overcast and they have a normal feeding cycle during this time. Also when they are having a tough time finding food they tend to feed longer during daylight hours to get the food they need. Remember that hogs are basically nocturnal and 80% of our hogs are killed at night .

Q: What grain of bullet do I need to use?

A:   150 grain bullets

Q: What license do I need?

A:   License is not required to hunt wild hogs

Q: What clothes do I need?

A:   Clothes suitable for the weather. Camo and scentloc clothing is recommended but not required. Snake boots are recommended.

Q: Do I need a spotlight?

A: No but you will need a flashlight. We do rent the green lens scope mounted spotlights for $50 for entire length of stay.

Q: What rifle should I use?

A:   One you are familiar with. Large caliber, scoped rifles are commonly used. It is really an issue of shot placement, your guide will talk about this when you arrive. If you are from an area where night hunting is not allowed, it is highly recommended to practice shooting at night before you arrive. .223 is  not  recommended.

Q: What vehicle should I bring?

A:   It is recommended that your bring a vehicle that you feel comfortable driving rough ranch roads. If we have wet conditions during your hunt you will need a 4wd Also, you will need to be able to transport your hogs back to our processing facility.

Q: When I shoot a hog what do I do with it?

A:   “Don’t shoot it if you don’t plan on utilizing it” Your guide will talk to you about this and show you our processing facility. Hogs are normally hauled back to the cleaning area where they are field-dressed, skinned and quartered. It is the hunter responsibility to do this. You will need a cooler to keep your hog meat in once it is quartered. Also bring a good quality knife for skinning and butchering. We do have some freezer and cooler space available, but it works well to keep ice layered on the meat, which we have available on site.

Q: Is the meat from a Wild Hog good to eat?

A:  Yes, the meat from hogs is excellent. In some areas it is considered a delicacy. The most common hog, taken for meat, are young ones around 100-150 pounds, Meat from sows to any size is usually good but may get a bit tougher from older sows. Meat from older boars may not be good to eat, they are usually taken as a trophy only. Care must be given to the meat to preserve it and keep it cool like any type of meat. Wild hog has been on menus for many years, wild game cookbooks and the internet are full of different recipes to prepare it.

Q: What is the best strategy to hunt hogs?

A:   “ Get in the blind and sit until a hog comes”. Game movement charts play a big role here. Hunt as quiet and scent-free as possible, keep your equipment in good working order. A good pair of binoculars and scope mounted lights are recommended for seeing in low-light conditions.

Q: Do you allow hunters to spot n stalk?

A: Yes, an unguided spot n stalk can be arranged for an additional $450 for up to 4 hunters

Q: Can I bring bait?

A: Not recommended at all. Hogs are very sensitive to new things, and it usually takes them a long time to come into something new.  We have had hunters bring their own bait and the results are not good. It sometimes acts more like a hog repellent.

Q: Can hogs be hunted by archery?

A:   Yes, we have ground blinds and tripods that can be set up on active spots and tripods stands near corn spinners.

Q: Am I limited to hogs?

A:   If you will let us know you are interested in another type of hunt we can make special arrangements for you. Make sure you have the correct license (Example: License for deer if hunting during deer season) Please let us know at time of booking.

Q: Can I spotlight hogs from my ATV or truck?

A:   No, This is not the way we hunt here and has proven to be unproductive.

Q: What type of blind will I be hunting out of?

A:   Normally we hunt hogs from a 4’ x 6’ elevated box blind large enough for two hunters. The blinds have windows, and 2 chairs. The blinds are positioned in proven hog activity areas near a corn spinner.  When we find hogs frequenting an area where we don’t have a box blind we set up a pop-up blind or build a simple blind out of brush. Most of the archery hunting for hogs are also from tripods or pop-up blinds.

The 5 Best States for a Hog Hunting Adventure

North America is home to millions of invasive wild hogs. Here are the best places to hunt them

By M.D. Johnson | Published Jan 3, 2023 12:00 PM EST

a wild hog in florida

Wild hogs have inhabited North America since the middle of the 16th century. Brought over as domestic stock by early settlers, America’s earliest farm pigs escaped their enclosures and became feral in no time. The invasive and ecologically destructive species was bolstered even further with the introduction of Eurasian wild boars for recreational hunting in the early part of the 20th century. Since then, pig populations have multiplied rapidly across a wide swath of territory that stretches from the deep South, across parts of the lower Midwest, and all the way into California.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture , feral hogs now occupy some 35 states with an estimated population of over 6 million individuals. That population is rapidly expanding, and wild hogs cause roughly $2 billion worth in damages annually.

Read Next: Could “Super Pigs” Spread into the Northern U.S.?

All manner of coordinated efforts—from trapping and bounty hunting programs to aerial gunning and legalized night hunting —are being employed by wildlife management agencies in an attempt to reduce this population. But feral hogs are no gimme when it comes to putting hooves in the air. That said, if hog reduction is a challenge you’re willing to take up and you’re looking for a fun hunt, there are a handful of states where you’ll want to concentrate your efforts. Here are five of the best hog hunting states in America.

1. California

The Golden State is well-known for its excellent waterfowling, its big blacktails, and its copious flocks Rio Grande gobblers. But those with a penchant for things porcine will find that California has plenty to offer here, too—including some of the heaviest hogs in the nation. It’s estimated that the state’s hog population runs around 400,000. In an attempt to beat back the invasion, California just passed new legislation that does away with bag limits, lowers hunting license fees, and opens the door for the legalization of night-hunting for hogs.

Public-land hog hunting opportunities do exist in California, with many of these being draw or limited-entry hunts. According to statistics provided by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the top three hog counties with some degree of public access include Monterey, San Luis Obispo, and Kern Counties. But the Golden State’s best hog hunting opportunity is on private land. Fortunately, there are plenty of guides and outfitters to choose from, and you can still knock on doors and get access for a DIY hunt—especially if it’s hogs you’re after.

Big Game Hunting photo

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commisssion (FWC) estimates the state’s current wild hog population at roughly half a million animals, second only to Texas. But most ranchers and farmers would put the number much higher.

Florida offers a long list of WMAs that—unfortunately for area managers—support healthy if not booming populations of pigs. What’s more, the FWC does an excellent job of profiling these hog-hunter-friendly public lands on their website , including area-by-area harvest reports as recent as the 2021-22 season. WMA-specific rules do apply in some areas, but most allow hog hunting year-round, except during the spring turkey season.

According to the University of Georgia Extension Service, upwards of 600,000 wild hogs call the Peach State home. The service also estimates that those hogs do roughly $150 million worth of damage to private and public property every year.  Hog hunting regulations in Georgia are relatively relaxed and include a year-round season, no bag limit, night hunting, and the use of bait. Additionally, a special Feral Hog and Coyote season is held in the spring on all WMAs, unless otherwise noted.

Currently, the state boasts over 1 million acres of public hunting land. And like most states with wild hog populations, Georgia supports an impressive list of guides and outfitters, many of whom specialize in pig hunts.

Feral hogs are pursued hunted with the aid of trained hunting dogs.

According to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, wild hogs are present in all of the state’s 67 counties, where they’re causing an estimated $55 million worth of agricultural damage each year. Hog hunters will find more than 750,000 acres of public ground in Alabama, most of which welcomes pig chasers with open arms. Only a hunting license and a WMA permit are required to participate in the state’s year-round season with no bag limits. Hunting hogs over bait is now legal in Alabama, but those doing so must purchase and possess a Bait Privilege License, available anywhere hunting licenses and permits are sold. A DIY hog hunt on a WMA is a great option, and there are plenty of great outfitters in the state that specialize in hog hunting.

wild hog

Of the estimated 6 million feral hogs now roaming the southern half of the nation, approximately half of them reside in Texas. According to the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, the hoofed invaders occupy every county in the Lone Star State minus El Paso, which sits on the far end of the state’s western panhandle.

Texas has some 1 million acres of public ground, with the majority of WMAs offering hog hunts in one form or another. Some are archery-only or special permit. Others, like the White Oak Creek WMA in Titus and Morris counties, provide essentially unlimited opportunities and no bag limit.

Read Next: Everything You Need to Know About Hog Hunting

Though most of the state’s 3 million hogs are found on private land, it’s not all that difficult to find a private landowner who (for a fee) will allow access to DIY hunters to hunt hogs. And dozens upon dozens of licensed outfitters offer reasonably priced guided and semi-guided hunts, including after-dark shoots with thermal optics. Or, if you got about $5K that’s unspoken for, you can always climb into the gunner’s seat of a nimble little helicopter, sit behind a belt-fed M60, and put a lot of pork chops and bacon on the ground.
