Trip Information

Mount Kailash Manasarovar Lake Trek is a very unique trek as it overlaps partly on a pilgrimage circuit. This tour is an immersion inside the remote, wild western Tibet reaching till the altitude of 5,600 metres.

Mount Kailash 6,714 m , also called Kang Rinpoche – Jewel of the Snows or Tise is a famous holy place of Tibet . The pyramid-shaped summit of Mount Kailash, considered as the heart of the metaphysical and physical universe is sacred for several religions devouts like Buddhists, Hindus, Bonpos and Janis . For Hindu people this is the abode of Lord Shiva. For Buddhist people is the telluric version of the cosmic mandala of Bodhisattvas and Dyani Buddhas.

For adventure trekkers Mount Kailash Manasarovar Lake Trek is an itinerary which takes you through a severely secluded region, where one can admire the greatness of nature in absolute peace and solitude. For the pilgrims arriving here it is the ultimate stage of spiritual accomplishment.

If you plan your trip in May, you can take part to the Saga Dawa Buddhist festival or otherwise organise yourself to be here during the full moon, for an exquisite experience.

The other major highlight of this trek is the surreal legendary Manasarovar Lake situated at an altitude of 4,588 metres, the highest placed fresh water lake in Tibet and a holy lake. Manasarovar Lake is the source of Sutlej River . The lake is considered sacred as the legend says Parvati, Lord Shiva’s wife, bathed here and infused magical powers to the water. Taking into consideration that the pyramid summit of Mt. Kailash reflects on the water, the holiness of this lake is emphasised.

For a magnificent sunset over the Manasarovar Lake, visit the Jiwu Temple.

Mount Kailash is circled by five monasteries Drirapuk Monastery, Nyari Monastery,  Dzultripuk Monastery, Gyangzha Monastery and Selung Monastery. Even if the monasteries are destroyed in various degrees, one still can admire statues, sculptures, thangkas, mural decorations and diverse Tibetan cultural objects.

Mount Kailash Manasarovar Lake Trek is a moderate graded trek, as you will cover a large part of it by vehicle, but still requires some trekking at high altitude.

There are numerous ways to reach and travel Lake Manasarovar and Mt. Kailash (6636m). In fact, all of these routes settle at Darchen which is the starting point for Mt. Kailash parikrama and other travel options. The following are some of the routes for the Kailash Manasarovar Trips.

Kailash yatra

Overland Route from Kathmandu

The Kailash Overland Route from Kathmandu passes from the Gyirong port over the border of India and China. The trip starts with a bus ride from Kathmandu to Sino-Nepal Border on Rasuwagadhi Fort which will take you 2 days at most. The bus ride will take you to Gyirong town from where you will travel 593 km to Darchen. You will stop on the way at Saga (4450m) and Paryang (4560m) to acclimatize. Along the way, you will also pass the holy lake of Mansarovar. Finally, you will reach Darchen which is the final destination on the trip.

Also, another alternative to this route is taking a flight to Lhasa which is at a height of 3656m. In fact, it is easier to get used to the higher altitude from this route. The famous Potala Palace along with the holy Jokhang Temple will greet you in Lhasa along with the Drepung and Sera Monasteries. From Lhasa, you will shortly reach Paryang where the route joins from Gyirong port to reach Mt. Kailash (6638m).

Simikot/Hilsa Route from Kathmandu

This route is the shortest trekking route for the Kailash Mansarovar Trip. Your trip starts with either a bus ride or a flight to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu, which lies in the western Terai plains in Nepal. From here you will drive further to Simikot. Your adventure on foot starts from the height of 2985m at Simikot.

From here, you will reach the Nara La Pass (4530m) which will eventually lead through the dry Tibetan plateaus. After a four-day trek through the plateaus, you will reach the Hilsa border and will trek further to Shear which is the starting point for your Kailash Tour. You can enjoy sightseeing in the Garuda Valley and reach Darchen from where the tour kicks off. You will be able to view Mt. Kailash (6636m) along with Lake Mansarovar as well. The trek takes a total of 20 days to complete.

Kailash yatra

Mt. Kailash via Lhasa

Another alternative for the Simikot/Hilsa Route from Kathmandu is taking a flight to Lhasa which is at a height of 3656m. The journey kicks off with a short plane ride from Kathmandu to Lhasa Gonggar International Airport in Lhasa. The famous Potala Palace along with the holy Jokhang Temple will greet you in Lhasa. Along with these, there are also the Drepung and Sera Monasteries which have huge cultural importance.

From Lhasa, the drive starts as you head west through highways that offer views of the Tibetan Plateau and Brahmaputra River. The drive first reaches Gyantse where you can visit the Pelkor Monastery and Gyantse Kumbum stupa. Shigatse is your next destination which greets you with open arms.

You can visit the beautiful Tashi Lhunpo Monastery in Shigatse and then continue your journey to reach Nagari town of Saga. Darchen, the starting point of the Kora can be reached by road from Saga. At Darchen, you can choose to explore Manasarovar Lake and indulge in other activities.

Helicopter ride via Simikot

Another alternative to the overland trip from Kathmandu is you can also take a helicopter ride to reach the Sino-Nepal Border. It takes a total of 12 days to finish the tour from Kathmandu. If you are travelling from Nepalgunj then it will take only 10 days to complete.

The trip starts with a short flight to Simikot from Kathmandu where you will have to go through the immigration procedure. The road trip starts from Hilsa and you will then take a drive to Taklakot where you will spend your night getting used to the altitude. Finally, you will then take a drive to Darchen with a night’s stop in Purang to acclimatize. Darchen lies at the base of Mt. Kailash (6636m) and is the starting point of the Kailash Kora.

kailash yatra

Mount Kailash Mansarovar Kora

Mount Kailash is known as the centre of the world, it is the residence of god, and a trip around Kailash is said to bring spiritual peace to people. Mansarovar, on the other hand, cleanses your soul of evil and sins. Kailash Mansarovar Kora is famous among the followers of Buddhism, Jain, and Hinduism alike to gain spiritual peace. Kora is another name for Yatra, a mix of pilgrimage and meditative practices.

Likewise, these trips are also said to relieve the pilgrims from their mortal sins. All in all, the Kailash Mansarovar Kora is a trip to cleanse your soul and reach a spiritual haven.

The Kailash Manasarovar Kora begins at Darchen which sits just a few kilometres northeast of the holy Lake Manasarovar. Pilgrims and travellers can easily reach Darchen from Manasarovar via a short drive or walk. Darchen is officially the starting point of the Kailash Kora and serves travellers with several lodging and dining services.

The Kora follows a clockwise route and passes numerous landmarks like Dira Phug Monastery (4080m), Dolma La (5660m), and Zuthrul Phug Monastery (4835m) on the way. The trip starts from Darchen from where you pass the Seralung Monastery to reach the base of Mt. Kailash. Marvelling in the holy view you can then explore the Gyandrak Monastery (i.e. the first monastery in Kailash) as well.

The trail can be difficult and steep at times so, travellers must exercise caution and safety while performing Kora. Continuing ahead, the Kora heads towards Darpothe Sak Dawa Monastery which lies further north of the Seralung Monastery.

As the trip reaches the northernmost rote on the Kora, travellers arrive at the Dira Phug Monastery. The entire trail is made up of rough Himalayan landscapes to make way towards the monastery. From here, the trek heads southeast as the trail ascends gradually to the top of the Dolma La Pass (5660m).

The trail on this part also offers the opportunity to take a detour to Gauri Kunda and Ganesh Kunda. The top of the pass offers surreal views of Mt. Kailash (6636m) and Naga Parbat range. Tips for Kailash Mansarovar Trip

Instead of just visiting the land to see the natural wonders, indulge rather in Kora and rejuvenate your spiritual energy while trekking along the trails of Kailash and Mansarovar. It is a good opportunity to learn about Tibetan culture and also to enjoy the pilgrimage along with the others. The majestic views of the surrounding Himalayas and the gleaming lakes are added benefits of Kora.

The best time to indulge in the Kora is from September to November and March to May when the temperature is moderate and the roads are less slippery. During the winter season (December to February), the roads are dangerous to venture into as they are mostly slippery and covered in snow. Similarly, the monsoon season (June to August) should also be avoided since the rainfall can cause major issues for either trekking or touring.

Accommodation and Food

Most of your nights will be spent in guesthouses, monasteries, or small nomad tents. You will be given simple local foods with not much variety so you will have to take what you can get. Taking a sleeping bag and some snacks from the main cities can be beneficial on your trip.

Permits and Visa

The permits that you will need can only be applied for by travel agencies on behalf of the travellers. TTP (Tibet Travel Permit) is the most important permit which allows you to enter Tibet. Likewise, all travellers must procure a Tibet Group Visa via a travel agency before leaving for Tibet.

Since you will be travelling to some of the coldest areas in Tibet, make sure you are wearing warm clothes to protect your body heat. Also, be sure to pack waterproof gear as you can never be too aware of the changing weather in the region. It is a must that the travellers remain warm and comfortable during the Kailash Manasarovar trips.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a journey to find spiritual peace and revel in the beauty of mesmerizing nature. While the trip is one of the holiest to Buddhist and Hindu devotees, it offers a surreal travel experience to all travel lovers. Experience the Tibetan culture and geographical beauty as you head to a destination that oozes beauty, thrill, and mystery.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra overview:

The Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar Tour is one of the most sacred treks, and it is mostly known as the Kailash Mansarovar yatra(pilgrimage). The Kailash Mansarovar Tour from Nepal takes you to the holiest adobe of lord shiva, Mount Kailash, and the holy Lake Mansarovar in the western part of Tibet. While the definite proof is missing, the word Kailash is believed to be derived from the word kelāsa, meaning crystal in Sanskrit. Mount Kailash is situated at an altitude of 6,638 m | 21,778 ft; however, it is believed that only a spiritually powerful and disciplined Buddhist monk, Milarepa, has climbed to the top of Mt Kailash to this date.

While most of the visitors travel to Mount Kailash and Mansarovar Lake with religious beliefs and the quest for salvation, others travel for the Mount Kailash Trek and experience the local culture of the Tibetan people in the rural area of Tibet. Subsequently, the Journey to Mount Kailash is not just a spiritual one but also a cultural one, as visitors can accommodate the culture of the remote region of Tibet. Additionally, the high passes like Dolma La Pass add to the difficulty of this trek, making it a perfect journey for even experienced trekkers.

The easiest, cheapest, and shortest route for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is from Nepal, with a scenic drive to the Nepal-Tibet border along the highway. The tour lasts for nine(9) - eleven (11) days. Still, it can be extended if you wish to spend more time during the Kailash Parikrama, also known as Kailash Kora, or if any unforeseen circumstances occur during the trip. Furthermore, the Parikrama or Kora of Mount Kailash lasts for three days, and the second day of the Parikrama is the challenging one as you cross the Dolma La Pass at an altitude of 5,660 m | 18,540 ft and stay overnight at Zutulpuk. While the Parikrama starts and ends at Darchen, the total Kailash Mansarovar Tour begins and ends at Kathmandu, Nepal.

Best Time to Visit Kailash Mansarovar:

As Kailash Mansarovar yatra lies in the particularly remote and high-altitude region of Tibet, we need to be sure of the weather conditions before visiting Kailash Mansarovar. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is featured in different seasons, leading to varied climates and temperatures, which directly influence the visitors/pilgrimages on the Kailash Mansarovar Tour from Nepal.

Briefly, the best time to visit Kailash Mansarovar starts from May till the end of September and can be extended to the first or second week of October. The months from May to September mostly guarantee minimal rainfall, high visibility, and comfortable temperatures with stunning views of desert and mountain alike. Most days are dry with fresh air from the holy mountain, with sunny days and deep blue sky, perfect for the Kailash Mansarovar Tour.

However, the same can't be said for the weather after the second(2nd) week of October as the cold temperature starts and snow begins accumulating in the paths, making it impossible for the Kailash Mansarovar Tour or Kailash Parikrama. Talking about months, the best season for Kailash Mansarovar is between May, June, July, and September, but the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra can be slightly extended till the second (2nd) week of October.

Religious and Spiritual Significance of Mount Kailash:

Mount Kailash is a revered destination for people with different religions, due to which not just Tibetians but tourists all across the globe arrive for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. The major religions that hold religious significance for Mount Kailash are Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

In Hinduism, Mount Kailash is recognized as the abode of Lord Shiva. It is believed to be a pillar of the world as it lies in the center of the earth, and the presence of spiritual energy can be felt during every step of the Kailash Parikrama. Mount Kailash is so revered in the Hindu religion that most Hindus directly remember Lord Shiva rather than the Mountain itself while discussing Mount Kailash.

Moreover, it is also believed to be the gateway to Heaven; as described in Mahabharata, the Pandava brothers, with their wife Draupadi, walked to the summit of Mount Kailash on their path to liberation. In Buddhism, Mount Kailash is known as Mount Meru and is central to Buddhist cosmology. Mount Kailash is believed to be the home of the Buddha Cakrasamvara, who is also known as Demchok and represents supreme bliss, a state of eternal happiness.

Moreover, according to the Buddhists, Milarepa has been to the top of the holy Mount Kailash and made it back successfully, which makes him the only person ever to summit Mount Kailash.

In Bon, Mount Kailash is believed to be the adobe of Sky goddess Sipaimen, and followers of Jainism believe Rishabhdeva attained nirvana (Moksha) (translateable to liberation) at Mount Meru.

Kailash Parikrma/Kora:

The religious name for the circumambulation of Mt Kailash is known as Kailash Parikrma in Hindu, whereas the Buddhist/Tibetan word is Kailash Kora. The pilgrims of many religions believe that Kailash Parikrma/kora on foot provides a powerful sensation of spiritually beneficial practice that can bring various positive effects, such as the collection of meritorious karma, cleansing of one's sin, and excellent fortune. Hindus, Jains, and Buddhists circumambulate Mount Kailash in a clockwise (right) direction, whereas Bonpos/Bon performs the circumambulation of Mount Kailash in an anti-clockwise (left) direction.

The Kailash Parikrama, or Kailash Kora, begins and ends at Darchen, at an altitude of 4,670m | 15,320 ft, covering a distance of 53 km (33 mil). The Kailash Parikrama takes a total of three days, taking you from Darchen to DiraPuk on the first day, followed by DiraPuk to Zuthul Puk and Zuthul Puk to Darchen where Parikarama ends.

Kailash Mansarovar Trek Itinerary:

Drive from kathmandu (1400 m | 4600 ft) - gyirong (2774 m | 9101 ft):.

Early in the morning, at about 3:30 a.m./4:00 a.m., we drive from Kathmandu to Gyirong Border, which takes about 6-7 hours, covering 175 kilometers. We need to leave early because the Tibet immigration office opens from 10:15 am to 2 pm, and only during this duration the visitors can proceed for inspection and start their Tibet tour. Also, the Tibet time zone is 2 hrs 15 min ahead of the Nepali time zone, so we are leaving at 6:00 am in Tibet time.

After about 6 - 7 hours of driving, we stop at Nuwakot or Syabrubesi for breakfast and then leave for the Nepal-Tibet border. Most of the section of the drive is off-road, mountain road, where the possibility of roads being blocked instantly can not be ignored due to three major landslide-prone areas. So, you need to be aware of this beforehand and plan accordingly if such an unfortunate situation occurs.

After registering at the Nepal Immigration office, we move towards the Nepal-Tibet border, where we leave our vehicles from Nepal and walk towards the Tibet/China immigration office. If you have heavy bags, then you can hire a porter to transfer your baggage to the Tibet immigration office and from the office to the parking zone. Our Tibetan guide will receive us upon arrival and take us to the Tibetan Immigration office.

Here in the immigration office, we need to make a COVID-19 vaccination QR and take care of other visa formalities. The total time taken for the visa procedures can range from 2 - 3 hours, depending on how crowded the immigration office is, and only the Tibetan guide can take you to the visa office.

After completing all visa formalities, our Tibetan guide will provide a brief session explaining the route and details of activities that we can do during our trip. We drive to Gyirong, which takes about an hour from the Nepal-China border. Gyirong is a small town in Tibet situated at an altitude of 2,700 m | 8,900 ft. Overnight stay at Gyirong.

  • Overnight stay at a hotel
  • Included meal (Breakfast, lunch, dinner).

Acclimatization at Gyirong:

Gyirong is made up of "Gyi' and "rong", "Gyi" means Happy, and "rong" means Village, so Gyirong means happy Village.

Gyirong is a perfect place for acclimatization, as we travel to Saga (4450m) the next day, so we need to prepare our body for the altitude. Gyirong hosts multiple Nepali restaurants and offers Indian delicacies. Gyirong also facilitates money exchange services if you don't have enough Yuan. During this free day, you can purchase any forgotten goods and prepare for the trip tomorrow. There are a lot of Nepali Shops as well, so it will be fine.

Moreover, we can make a short visit to the Ghepuk Cave; it has religious significance for Hindus and Buddhists and ancient significance for people from Nepal and Tibet. The 1st Buddhist master, Padma Shambhava, from India, arrived in Tibet and started teaching Buddhism to locals here, hence starting the religion of Buddhism. From the 8th Century, the masters/gurus from Tibet began traveling and teaching Buddhism all over Tibet.

The cultural/ancient significance is also from the 7th Century. The then-king of Tibet, Songtsen Gampo, also known as Songzan Ganbu, married the princess of Nepal Bhrikuti in this cave. The bridal party returned to Nepal, while Bhrikuti went to Lhasa, where the separation of Bhrikuti and her parents took place. The cave was named Ghepuk in reference to this event, "Ghe" means separation, and "Puk" means cave.

Padma Sambhava is worshipped inside this cave with diyos, and you can witness rich Tibetan culture today. While returning, we can see a river flowing down a bridge, and the bridge is adorned with flags, showcasing rich Tibetan culture in every step of our Journey. Overnight stay at Gyirong.

  • Included meal (Breakfast, Lunch Dinner)

Drive from Gyirong to Saga 4640 m|15223 ft:

After a full day of acclimatization the day before, we have our breakfast and drive to Saga.

The drive from Kyirung to Saga takes 4 hours, covering a total distance of 200 kilometers. During this drive, enjoy the massive Gyirung waterfall, take some pictures, and continue the Journey to Saga. Additionally, we can see the Chagasi Milerpa cave at an altitude of 4200 m, and It is believed that Milerpa mediated inside this cave for 9 whole years.

We also cover a high pass, named Qomolangma high pass, situated at an altitude of 5236 m | 17178 ft, which lies inside the Qomolangma National Nature Reserve. Qomolangma Monastery lies here in the high pass, which makes it one of the highest monasteries during this Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. During this pass, make sure to have extra warm clothes, hats, and scarves, as the winds here are continuous and very cold. Spin the mani bells and enjoy the views of hills, mountains, and a lake afar from the Qomolangma High Pass. The mountain peaks Gaurishankar, Shishapangma, and Langtang Himal can be seen from this pass.

The drive from Qomolangma Pass to Saga takes about 2 hrs, and we have our lunch here at Saga. Overnight stay at Saga.

  • Included meal (Breakfast, lunch and Dinner)

Saga to Mansarovar (4590 m | 15060 ft):

Today is a long day of driving as we cover a total of 507 km, passing through towns and villages like Zhongba and Paryang. Even though the drive is long, the scenic views of glass lands, yak, and sheep herds are sure to entertain you. The whole drive takes about 7-8 hours from Saga to Paryang, covering 507 km. The roads are well built, so even the long Journey will not be that much tiresome.

We drive through the bridge above the Brahmaputra River and pass through many lakes like Khunmen Tso, Sibling, Karru Ongchen, and Peiku Tso Lake (4400 m). The drive is all along hills, as there is no vegetation and no trees. The whole duration is along the deserts; however, the scenes will satisfy you. Moreover, before the construction of black-topped roads, the drive duration was two days, but now we can drive from Saga to Mansarovar in a single day.

We stopped at Fayang for lunch, which is about 4 hour's drive from Saga. After having lunch and resting for a bit, we drive towards Mansarovar, which takes another 3-hour drive. As we reach Mansarovar, we can see Kailash Mountain, mostly the top and East face of Mount Kailash. As we reach Mansarovar, we can take a stroll around Mansarovar. As for overnight stays, we have two options for today.

One option is on the shore of Lake Mansarovar, but it is a very basic tea house with 3 or 4 beds in one room and no toilet and bathrooms. There are toilet tents as a substitute for toilets. Another option is a good teahouse in a townside a bit far from Lake Mansarovar with more features than a basic tea house. You can choose any option that fits your needs, and we will prepare accordingly.

In religious significance, it is believed that Shiva and Parvati bathe here in Mansarovar at midnight, and many wait for their arrival till midnight. While no one claims to see Shiva and Parvati, the reflection of the moon in the Mansarovar Lake makes it worth the wait for the devotees.

  • Overnight stay at a hotel.

Mansarovar to Darchen (4575 m | 15320 ft):

Today is one of the most awaited days for devotees as we start bathing in Mansarovar, washing all of our sins. After bathing, we can start our worshipping in Mansarovar. After puja, we start our meditation on the shore of Mansarovar for 2 - 3 hours, taking all the positive energy and negating the negative thoughts and energy. Unlike normal places, the spirituality of Lake Mansarovar eases your mind and soul so you can meditate for hours. The holy name for meditation here in Mansarovar is Samadhi.

After meditation, we can take a tour of Lake Mansarovar, with an eco bus that circles around the Lake. The tour can also be called Lake Mansarovar Parikrama; even if we forget about the religious and spiritual significance of Mansarovar, the tour of the Highest freshwater lake in the world is a sight to behold. Kailash Mountain surrounds Mansarovar on the right and by the Gurlamandhata Mountain on the left.

After a full-day exploration of Mansarovar, with meditation and puja, we drive towards Darchen, which takes only 45 mins, covering 45km. Overnight stay at Darchen.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra can also be started from Hilsha, Nepal, and trek to Taklakot, Tibet. Overnight stay at Taklakot and then trek from Taklakot to Mansarover the next day. The overall itinerary of the Kailash Mansarovar Tour from Nepal can be reduced to 9 days, but this border is often closed by Tibet, so you need to make an inquiry with us and plan accordingly.

  • Overnight stay at a hotel/tea house

Darchen to Yamaduar (Short drive) and trek to DiraPuk (5210 m| 17093 ft)

Darchen serves as the base/ starting and ending point of the Kailash Parikrama/Kora. The Parikrama takes a total distance of 53 km, and we will start the trek after an eight-kilometer drive to Yamaduar from Darchen.

If you wish to rent horses, helpers, porters, or yaks, you need to rent them from Yamaduar. The horses make the three days of trekking easy; however, if you wish to trek to Charansparsa, then you need to pay the price of a horse for 4 days, and horses can't go to Charansparsa.

Note: Horses and yaks aren't included in the package, but we can manage them for you at Darchen.

From Yamaduar, the total trekking time to reach DiraPuk is 13 km, which takes about 6 - 7 hrs with 27188 walking steps(calculated during Kailash Mansarovar Yatra via iPhone14).

This route will provide you with incredible views of both the west and north face of the magnificent Mount Kailash.

According to the natives here, DiraPuk was discovered by a female Yak. When the female yak placed her horn inside the cave, the yak herders noticed it, and the cave was found, hence named Dirapuk, "Dira" meaning horn of female yak, and "Puk" meaning cave. Overnight stay at Dirapuk Monastery, situated at an altitude of 5000 m.

Dirapuk to Charansparsa and back to Dirapuk:

After breakfast, we trek toward the north face of Mount Kailash for Charansparsa. Note that we can't take horses today, so we will be trekking for a total time of about 5 -6 hours.

CharanSparsa means touching/reaching the feet of Mount Kailash from the North face, directly from Dirapuk Monastery. It is believed that during Charansparsa, you are directly touching the feet of Lord Shiva, so the blessing you receive today is sure to provide you Mokshya.

The milky white water from the top of Kailash forms the Indus River, while the Ganges are believed to originate from lord Shiva's Jatta(hair).

The total time to trek to Charansparsa is 2 - 3 hrs, and we spend about 1 - 2 hrs in the base of Mount Kailash. Finally, trekking back takes about 1 -2 hours, so we can complete Charansparsa in a total of 6 - 7 hours with 13672 total footsteps.

Trek from Dira Puk to ZuthulPuk via Dolma La Pass (5630 m | 18471 ft):

Today is the holiest day of 11 days, Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. We start the trek after having breakfast, and the trails are suitable, so you can ride the horses today. The total trekking time for today is about 8 - 9 hours.

The first section of the route is ascending all the way to Dolma La Pass 5150 m | 17000 ft) for two hours. There are some stalls before you reach Dolma La Pass, where you can have tea and hot drinks, or from there, there are no stalls until ZuthulPuk.

After Dolma La Pass, the road descends for 1 hrs and then straightens for 2-3 hrs until we reach Zhutul Puk.

  • Overnight stay at a hotel/lodge

End of Kailash Parikrama and drive to Saga:

After having our breakfast, we start our last day of the trek, a short distance of 8 km for about 3 hrs upto Gebu and short drive to darchen. Today marks the end of the Kailash Parikrama/Kora as we begin trekking to descend Darchen town. After that, we drive from Darchen to Saga. Overnight stay at Saga.

Drive from Saga to Kyirong:

This is your final day in the Tibetan Plateau itself. The drive from Saga to Kyirong takes about 4 - 5 hrs. The picturesque Kiron waterfall lies in this route, so we can spend time clicking photos and mesmerizing here. After a short drive from Kiron waterfall to Kyirong, we spent the whole day resting and reflecting on our Journey to Kailash Mansarovar Trek.

Drive from Kyirong to Kathmandu:

After the successful completion of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, we drive back to Nepal, filled with spiritual enlightenment with the help of meditation and the blessing of lord shiva.

Today is the final day of our Journey, as we leave the Tibet border after completing immigration formalities. The drive from Kyirong to Kathmandu takes about 6 - 7 hours along the greenery. The drive may even take more hours depending on the road conditions, as it is completely off-road from the Nepal Immigration Office. Our Journey ends at Kathmandu.

At the top of Dolma La, you can even find the place called Shivasthal that is covered with holy flags and the personal related things like clothing, ornaments. In Zuthulphuk, we will have guesthouse or fixed tent with bed and blankets. No worry we have a warm sleeping bag with us. Similar as in Diraphuk, we will take dinner at earliest it prepared and go to warm our bed as early as possible.

Kailash Mansarovar Tour has been categorized as a pilgrimage tour, wherein hundreds of devotees seek the blessings of Lord Shiva and dip into Mansarovar Lake, however, we will make this tour safe and hassle free for you. Testimonials What our clients say about us

We just came back from our Gokyo Trek with Bipin. Overall we can say that it has been an unforgettable and great experience. Even prior to starting the trek until the very last second of it, Bipin took care of us very well. He left no question unanswered, helped us whereever possible and was an excellent guide during the whole tour. He is a very young but extremely experienced guide - he provides excellent service and is very engaged. Everything went very well and as planned. We cannot imagine having done this with anyone else - without a doubt we can truly recommend Bipin and Himalayan Gateway Trek! If we decide to do tour again - Bipin is the only person we would want to it with!

We went trekking with Himalayan Gateway Trek in June 2019 in EBC + Chola Pass route. Bipin is a company owner and also our guide for this trek. This was the first time for me and my husband for the several days trekking. It was very fun and impressive. Bipin is a professional guide. He took excellent care of us. He made sure that everything was going to be good while trekking. He paid attention to every single detail. For example, he brought some fruit and food from Kathmandu in order to serve us while the trek. He also got us to measure the oxygen level in blood everyday. My husband got a knee problem while the trek but he survived because Bipin gave him some knee supporters. The company will also lend you some waterproof duffel, sleeping bag, and crampon with no cost. We were having amazing experience from this trip. I really recommend the Himalayan Gateway Trek. We are sure that we will be back again!

This route is suitable for beginners (like our group). I started exercising 3 months before coming and it worked. The food and facilities are a lot better than we expected. Our group planned and prepared for this trip for 4 months. We hardly knew anything about trekking in Nepal before then. The agency is professional, flexible and trustworthy. They answered our questions and gave us good recommendation. When we first met our guide, he asked us about our aim of coming here. I couldn’t find an answer for myself. (Actually, I just needed to take a break from my busy job.) But during this trip, the nature, the people, the guide and the porters fulfilled my empty answer. We had a warm welcome since the first day we met. Our well experienced guide explained about our plan and the should do and don’ts before starting our trip. He seemed to know every rock and twig in the mountains. He repeated the names with the heights of the mountains again and again until we could remember most of them 😅. (So we made him our geography teacher!) Our guide and porters are very thoughtful, and caring. They watched out our every step, make sure that we are good enough to trek and warm enough to sleep. We felt like our brothers were taking care of us. The view of the mountains from MBC to ABC is so magnificent that I won’t forget it. And I found friendship all along my way. A quote said “Happiness is way of travel, not the destination”, and I agree. Can’t wait till the next trip. Totally recommend Himalayan Gateway Trek to be your company!

I and my friends had an fantastic experience with Himalayan gateway trek to annapurna circuit in October 2018.It was our first visit in Nepal. They did a great job organising for our entire trip. And they made it 21 days in Nepal that memorable journey for us. Before our trip,Bipin was very helpful and answer all of our questions fully. When we arrived,we had very warm welcome from Binod.Meeting and briefing with Binod in Kathmandu before we started trek was helpful. We were given a good and clean -20 c sleeping bag and duffel bags to take with us on our trek. During the trek, Our Guide Kamal And Porters Zyani and Shami did an exellent job.We couldn't have finished the trek without them. Kamal was wonderful in all respects. He support and encouraged us.Kamal was very kind ,responsible, friendly and available. He also good knowledge on the mountain ,wide life and Nepal culture.Kamal alway told us many interesting things about nature and local areas .Everyday after dinner,He would brief and well inform us about what our plan was for the next day. He was listening all we need.He did very good organising everything as transports, meal, accomodations. All the guesthouse we stayed were comfortable and had best view.He alway remind us drinking sufficient water ,concerned our health and mental condition.Beside the trek,He also introduce us to the local set meal "Dal Bhat".He know where with the delicious Dal Bhat, now we really love Dal Bhat. And he made the Apple Fritter for us, it's so good. And he alway brought fresh and tasty apple for us..He helped us solved solutions and all problems. He made us feel safe and worry free the whole trek. We couldn't have asked for better guide. And our porters were amazing too.Zyani is female porter. She was young and very strong.Although she had to carry heavy up and down mountains but she very patient and never complaint. She sweet ,friendly and lively.I love her laughter and beauty smile. On the way I always heard anothers trekkers called her "super woman". And another porter Shami the brother was great too .He worked as Professtional and reliable. Annapurna circuit itself was fantastic, stunning view,The scenery changed eveyryday. And Trekking with the team is amzing experience. We are relly grateful to have them in this journey. Thank you Bipin so much for the farewell dinner in Kathmandu. For your pay attention of our request about Hotel and you managed to move us the better hotel. We really appreciate it. Nepal is very Incredible and beautiful country. We are so glad to have booked our trip with Himalayan Gateway trek. .And Highly recommend this company to anyone who plan to trek in Nepal.I will come back nepal and also use this company on my next trip.

EBC+Chola Pass Trek I did a solo trip trekking with them. They are very professional. First when I arrived into Kathmandu Mr. Bipin had explained me about the trip and asked if I have all equipments ready for the trip. This is really good because you wouldnt want to go on a trek with something missing and probably won’t be able to find it in the mountain. First day that I have to fly to lukla I suppose to go on the 1st flight but then my flight shift to 3rd flight but then my problem was really well solve by the company they changed from airplane to helicopter instead because they knew I have exactly days to do the trek. During the trek,my guide(Mr.Dawa) and my porter ( Mr.Minma) both of them were being very helpful to me. They are a good team. The guide is very knowledgeable and professional. I really had fun and enjoy during the trek. At the end of trip, i had a farewell dinner(typical Nepali dinner) with Mr.Binod which was really nice(the food/the traditional dance). Finally, thank you very much.If I chance to do the trek in Nepal again I would definitely choose them.

Great route with less people, brilliant view, and awesome guide. We had Binod as our guide. This is the best one ever for my Nepal visits. He has strong mindset of service mind, taking care of us like family. He always provide useful information about the route and mountains we've seen. Also well prepared and good planning for our itinerary. I'm right now planning my next trip!

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

kailash mansarovar yatra 2022

Last Updated on September 14, 2023 by Alpha Adventure Treks

At an altitude of 6638 meters, Mt. Kailash is located in Tibet, a Chinese autonomous area. At a height of 4590 meters, Mansarovar Lake is located in the same region, approximately 45 kilometers before Mt. Kailash. Mt. Kailash is not only the world’s highest peak, but also the source of four of the region’s most powerful rivers: The Brahmaputra, Sutlej, Ganges, and Indus.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is the holiest form of the journey to Mt. Kailash , Lord Shiva’s spiritual habitation. Thousands of pilgrims go from all over the country and the world to participate in the heavenly yatra each year.

Mount Kailash, together with the Manasarovar lake, is profoundly embedded in the spiritual core of Asia, kindling human imagination since time immemorial. The lake was created in the thoughts of Lord Shree Brahma, according to Hindu belief. As a result, it is known as Manasarovar in Sanskrit, which is a simple combination of the two terms ‘Manas’ (mind) and ‘Sarovar’ (lake).

At a height of 21,778, this pilgrimage spot in the Himalayan range provides travelers with inner calm and holiness. According to Hindu legend, Lord Shiva’s sojourn is Kailash, while Lord Bramha’s thoughts created Mansarovar Lake. The lake is magnificent and wonderful, and it feeds four holy rivers: The Bramhaputra, Sutlej, Ganges, and Indus. As a result, a few days of holiness can transform one’s life.

Best Kailash Mansarovar Yatra Package Itinary

Important pre-departure information:, kailash mansarovar yatra: journey to the sacred abode.

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a spiritual and religious pilgrimage that holds immense significance for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and followers of various other faiths. Located in the remote and rugged region of Tibet, this journey takes pilgrims to the revered Mount Kailash and the holy Lake Mansarovar. The yatra is not just a physical journey, but a spiritual odyssey that tests one’s determination, endurance, and devotion.

Historical and Religious Significance

Mount Kailash, standing tall at 6,638 meters (21,778 feet), is considered the abode of Lord Shiva by Hindus. It is believed that Lord Shiva resides at the summit of the mountain along with his consort Parvati. Buddhists also hold Mount Kailash in high esteem, as it is considered the center of the universe and an important site associated with the life of Lord Buddha.

Lake Mansarovar, situated at an elevation of 4,590 meters (15,060 feet), is believed to be the creation of Lord Brahma’s mind, hence the name “Mansarovar” which means “mind’s lake.” Taking a holy dip in the waters of Mansarovar is believed to cleanse one’s sins and lead to spiritual enlightenment.

The Pilgrimage Journey

The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is not just a physical journey, but also a test of one’s spiritual devotion and physical endurance. Pilgrims embark on a challenging trek that usually begins from Kathmandu, Nepal. The route takes them through the Tibetan Plateau, rugged terrains, and high mountain passes.

The traditional route for the yatra involves crossing the high-altitude pass of Lipulekh or Nathu La, depending on the route chosen. The journey is not for the faint-hearted, as pilgrims have to overcome harsh weather conditions, low oxygen levels, and strenuous trails. However, the difficulties encountered during the yatra are believed to purify the soul and bring the pilgrims closer to divine blessings.

Spiritual Significance and Rituals

Throughout the yatra, pilgrims engage in various rituals that hold profound spiritual significance. Circumambulating Mount Kailash is a central ritual; pilgrims walk in a clockwise direction around the mountain, which is known as “parikrama” or “kora.” This ritual is believed to erase the sins of a lifetime and pave the way to enlightenment.

Another significant practice is taking a dip in the icy waters of Lake Mansarovar. This ritual is thought to cleanse the body and soul, washing away accumulated karma. Pilgrims also engage in meditation, prayer, and chanting along the way, seeking a deeper connection with the divine.

Challenges and Preparations

Undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra requires careful preparation. Due to the high altitudes and challenging terrain, acclimatization is crucial. Pilgrims are advised to undergo medical check-ups, physical fitness training, and mental preparation before embarking on the journey.

Altitude sickness is a real concern during the yatra. It’s important for pilgrims to ascend gradually, stay hydrated, and pay attention to their body’s signals. Proper clothing, footwear, and gear are essential to withstand the cold and unpredictable weather.

Permits and Visa Process for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra

Undertaking the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra requires several permits and a visa to enter the region, as the pilgrimage route passes through Tibet, an autonomous region of China. Here is a detailed guide on the permits and visa process for the yatra:

1. Chinese Visa :

Before anything else, you need to obtain a Chinese visa, specifically a “Group Tourist Visa” (Type L). This visa is usually issued for the duration of the yatra and is organized by tour operators who arrange the pilgrimage. To obtain this visa, you must submit your passport and required documents to the tour operator, who will then process your visa through the Chinese embassy. The visa is often issued as part of a group and is valid only for the dates of the yatra.

2. Tibet Travel Permit :

Once you have your Chinese visa, your tour operator will also apply for the Tibet Travel Permit on your behalf. This permit is necessary to enter Tibet and is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau. You cannot apply for this permit individually; it must be arranged by a registered travel agency.

3. Alien Travel Permit :

This permit is required for travel to areas outside of Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Since the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra involves traveling to remote regions, you will need this permit. Your tour operator will also arrange this permit for you.

4. Military Permit :

Certain areas along the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route are considered border regions, and a Military Permit is needed to travel through these areas. Again, your tour operator will take care of arranging this permit.

5. Indian Government Approval :

For Indian nationals, in addition to the Chinese permits, you need to obtain approval from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) before embarking on the yatra. This approval is usually facilitated by the tour operator as well.

6. Booking through a Registered Tour Operator :

The entire process of obtaining permits and approvals is usually handled by registered tour operators who specialize in organizing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. It’s important to choose a reliable and experienced tour operator to ensure a smooth and hassle-free journey.

7. Required Documents :

When applying for the permits and approvals, you will typically need to provide the following documents:

  • Passport with valid Chinese visa
  • Passport-sized photographs
  • Filled application forms provided by the tour operator
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (for Indian nationals)

8. Timely Application :

It’s important to apply for permits well in advance, as the process can take some time, and there might be limitations on the number of pilgrims allowed during specific periods. The yatra is usually organized during specific months, primarily during the summer, to ensure safe travel due to weather conditions.

In summery, the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra involves a complex process of obtaining permits and visas due to the remote and sensitive location of the pilgrimage. Working with a reputable tour operator and adhering to the application timelines and requirements is essential to ensure a successful and spiritually enriching journey.

Traveling to Tibet is best done in casual clothing and comfortable walking shoes. Bring thick clothing because the nights and early mornings can be chilly to bitterly cold. Pilgrims from India are strongly encouraged not to wear saris. Bring all of your medications, cosmetics, personal toiletries, and other necessities from home because they will be difficult (if not impossible) to obtain on the road. It’s also a good idea to include a modest first-aid kit. It’s also beneficial to have a route map so you know where you’re going and where you’ve been each day.

What to take:

Winter wear: Gore-Tex material, despite its high cost, is highly recommended for surviving the bitter cold. Carry a down jacket, raincoat, or windbreaker, thermal underwear, jackets, warm trousers & woolen shirts (cotton will suffice), warm sweaters, woolen gloves, sun hat, sunglasses, comfortable shoes, light leather boots in case of snow, woolen balaclava (‘monkey cap,’) & scarf/dust mask to protect your eyes and nose from dust and cold.

Bring with you:

Snacks will be available along the route. Chocolates, dried fruit, toffees, glucose; ‘nankeen, and other sweets Water purification tablets and a strong water bottle Diamox pill and personal medical kit (for high altitude), Sunglasses, sunblock or sunscreen lotion, moist tissues (fresh ones are wonderful for wiping off the dust), clothes-line/clips, needle & thread, deo-spray (handy for smelly boots/feet and for a round of spray in the toilet tent! ), toilet paper, flashlight & spare batteries, daypack (small shoulder bag), Cameras and movies, Binocular.

Altitude Sickness:

You are likely to feel symptoms and discomfort of altitude sickness (headache, lack of appetite, nausea, weariness, sleeplessness, dyspnea, etc.) while traveling through high terrain until your body adjusts to the elevation. Depending on the person, this could take a few days or longer. We have made it obligatory to remain two nights at Kerung before moving on to the higher altitudes for this reason alone. Maintain a calm demeanor and refrain from exercising. Prior to and during the tour, do not consume alcohol or smoke. You should also have a strip of Diamox tablets with you. If you’re unsure about the dosage, talk to your doctor. On this journey, we supply a Gamow bag (specific equipment for preventing high-altitude sickness).
