Gary Fisher Wahoo Disc review

Sporty entry-level offering

Steve Worland

trek wahoo 29er gary fisher

T he Wahoo is a little different to typical entry-level mountain bikes. The frame has been designed with a longer reach than average for each given size and the ‘Handling by Bontrager’ fork has been specially designed for Fisher.

The result promises great handling at slow speeds as well as the higher-speed stability that Gary Fisher’s original Genesis geometry was made for. Apart from the 13.6kg (30lb) weight that so often comes with sub-£500 bikes, there seem to be remarkably few performance compromises here.

Ride & handling: We like Fisher’s fast but stable G2 geometry, but it takes a while to get used to

Fisher’s Genesis G2 geometry (see Frame below) will certainly have a bearing on whether you end up liking the handling of the Wahoo. The steering feels quicker than on most other sub-£500 bikes at lower speeds, to a point of feeling nervous until you get used to it.

The combination of sitting forward on the bike, the long top tube and short stem all conspire to shift more body weight over the fork and front wheel. Again, you may initially feel slightly nervous about this but you’ll get used to it quickly, it’ll make you use the 100mm (3.9in) of fork travel more effectively and you’ll probably end up riding more aggressively.

The high-speed stability, notably on rough descents, is superb and the 13.6kg (30lb) weight won’t slow you down much on the climbs either, because the long top tube ride position is so efficient. The Wahoo is at its best on the sort of snaking rollercoaster singletrack that, to many riders, is the essence of mountain biking.

This is unusual for a bike at an entry-level pricepoint. Our expert riders initially liked the handling more than our relative beginners, but by the end of a couple of longer sessions, everyone had warmed to it.

It’s more costly than some of the other entry-level bikes we've tested recently, and the parts aren’t any better than those on some of the cheaper bikes, but its superior fork and competitive geometry made it a favourite.

Frame: Versatile chassis with plenty of manipulated tubing – but check sizing before you buy

It’s good to see Fisher using the characteristic Genesis G2 geometry on an entry-level bike. The long top tube, short stem and custom fork rake is aimed at improving handling prowess on technical terrain and improving stability at speed.

Riders buying a £450 bike might not have comparison experience but the obvious thing when you climb on the bike is the reach to the bars – a 17.5in Wahoo is 2cm longer (from seat to bar centre) than a 19in Specialized Hardrock . So think carefully about which size you need.

The frame construction offers a lot of talking points, most of which probably boost performance slightly too, although to be honest it’s hard to tell because the tyres and the fork characterise the ride feel far more than the big curvy hydroformed down tube, squat flare-butted head tube and shapely seat and chainstays.

All-rounder practicality shines through, with three sets of bottle cage bosses, rear rack mounts, masses of mud drop-though room around the tyres and cable guides that allow you to run full outer cable, or hydraulic hose if you upgrade, to the rear brake. There’s a 1.5in stack of washers for stem height adjustment too.

Equipment: Far better fork than average at this price, plus fast and grippy tyres

The SR Suntour fork has been designed to Bontrager specifications, with more offset than average to enable faster steering at low speeds. The 100mm (3.9in) travel is fairly well controlled, with a soft top-out when it rebounds. The leg-top lockout lever makes the fork very clunky when fully engaged but you can stiffen the fork enough for climbs and road work by flicking it halfway.

The Wahoo drivetrain is about average for a £450 bike, with a very basic steel-ringed Shimano crankset (with a square taper bottom bracket axle), a Deore rear mech, Altus front mech and eight-speed cassette with Easyfire shift levers. Its operation was faultless throughout the test.

Shimano’s cable discs took a couple of rides to reach their best but once bedded in were powerful, efficient and easy to fine tune. We’d change to full outer cable to the rear brake for extra weather-proofing.

The Bontrager-rimmed wheels have Shimano hubs and the front has a Clix sprung-loaded safety quick-release that keeps the wheel in the fork ends even if the lever loosens. The Bontrager Jones XR treads are fast rolling and grippy in most conditions, and all the Bontrager finishing kit is basic but good quality stuff that boosts comfort at all the contact points.

Customer Bicycle Reviews

I had a fantastic and seamless experience of cycle delivery and it was delivered in an amazing turn around time of 2 days, since I live in Chennai, the cycle was promptly shipped in a safe and unharmed manner. The sales and support was brilliant. I purchased the NUZE S3 cycle. I got information from the cycle experts since I am a newbie. My overall experience was amazing and nothing like the other customers mentioned in this site.

Kudos to the CMB team and i will ask all my colleagues and friends to buy theirs here only.

Recently bought Road bike from CMB & I can say, I am one of the happiest customers of CMB.

My experience was really superb from booking to delivery to post-sales support.

As this was my first road bike and was unaware that pedals are not included with the cycle, which I came to know after booking. To my surprise CMB had included the pedals from their side “Fitted and ready to ride”.

Thanks CMB team.

CMB is a website which helps us to choose the right bicycle, had a hassle free experience while buying my Waltx Summit 27.5 from CMB, along with the cycle, was thrown in a host of goodies worth almost 4000, the buying experience was seamless and the cycle was delivered in just 6 days including a Sunday and this while there was a heavy downpour in Chennai, still the CMB Team showed ownership and updated and kept me informed of all the checkpoints. On delivery I found out that a accessory was broken, CMB Team arranged a replacement within few hours of sending the mail to them with pictures and video of the broken item, shows volumes about a company and its staff of providing a perfect seamless solution and ensuring that the customer always stays happy.

I have now become a permanent client of CMB and all my future cycles and of my near and dear ones will be bought from ChoooseMyBicycle only.

With an informative and easily guiding portal, CMB comes across as the most user friendly platform for cycle riders. I bought Giant ATX 2021 in March End, however I have been engaged with the portal for cycling information for a couple of months ahead of my purchase decision. CMB has guided me systematically in my cycle purchase experience that has been quite satisfying even in the Covid 19 situation which adversely affected their services. Based on personal experience, I recommend CMB, for people who intend to make an informed purchase. Also, CMB should work upon direct integration with the OEMs to eliminate the teething issues, if any, arising in executing their transitional responsibility.

Got the delivery in 5days and as said 99% assembled only pedals need to fit and handle bar needs to tighten up.. and all this is in lockdown And the service team is very responsive.

Bought a Firefox road runner pro d from the website. Happy with the product. All major installations were done by their team. Only handle bar and pedal need to fit by me. At that time my pedal was not fit it into the crank arm. When I reported the issue they have sent me the original crank arm with support of Firefox at free of cost. They have best team to support client. Advise to buyers. They will only sent product after their quality check. But there will be a 1% chance of a mistake, so record a non stop video of unboxing of your bicycle . If any problem with the product.,Then you can prove it is their fault with the video footage. In my case I was unable to prove it is their mistake . So I have to accept that was my mistake but they really amazed me by giving the original part at free of cost

Trek Unveils ‘Gary Fisher Collection’

Instead of a standalone fisher brand, the mountain bike pioneer's bikes will now be distributed exclusively through trek retailers under the gary fisher collection moniker..

The Sawyer is a retro-styled rigid 29er in the new "Gary Fisher Collection" of bikes.

Reports of Gary Fisher’s demise — of his bicycle brand, that is – are greatly exaggerated.

“Trek Absorbs Gary Fisher Brand” says one headline about the announcement by Fisher and Trek of the new Gary Fisher Collection. “Trek Drops Gary Fisher Brand” says yet another.

Absorbed, dropped or whatever, Fisher’s bikes will live on albeit a little differently than they have under the Trek umbrella for the last 14 years. Instead of a standalone Fisher brand, the bikes will be distributed exclusively through Trek retailers under the Gary Fisher Collection moniker.

Depending on the spin, the move was done because Fisher’s market position wasn’t large enough to cover costs associated with engineering, marketing and other expenses, according to Bike Europe . Or, according to Trek, the move dramatically expands exposure for Fisher bikes, which will now be available in eight times more retail outlets around the world and seen by ten times more internet viewers.

“This makes sense. I love this strategy,” Gary Fisher said in a release. “I’ve been working with Trek on the Fisher Brand since 1996, but this puts me right in the middle of the best team of bike people. I can now bring my ideas to Trek, number one bike brand in the world. Better bikes and more people on those bikes. I love it.”

Trek President John Burke said the company wasn’t taking full advantage of Fisher.

“We realized we could bring Gary’s ideas to many more people by creating the Gary Fisher Collection,” Burke said.

The Gary Fisher Collection will give Trek retailers access to a lineup of 29ers, dual sports, alternative road and pavement bikes.

From Trek’s King of the Mountain Blog

Trek 29ers — Thank You Gary!

Wow. What an annoucement, eh? If you haven’t heard… Trek just announced its most recent awesome plan to bring Fisher closer to the Trek family, with the inauguration of the Fisher Collection. Check it out on our homepage: trekbikes.com

We are so stoked to announce this for so many reasons. And I could go on and on about how excited I am to finally (!) see a Trek 29er come around, but I really think the best person to explain this all is Gary himself.

Q: Gary, what do you think?

A: Wow. I mean, I am the luckiest guy around. I just inherited the biggest, greatest bike engineering team in the world. Industrial designers, carbon engineers, marketers [thank you, Gary]… It really doesn’t get any better than this!

Q: So you’re excited, eh?

A: Oh man, am I ever! The Trek Superfly — the best looking mountain bike we’ve done to date. The Transport, this bike I’m really excited about. I mean, transportation bikes are the future, and to get one of these to market with the power of Trek behind it — this bike is going to move the meter. And the electric meter too since it’s available as an electric bike!

Q: And what about that Sawyer?

A: Classic design, incredible execution. Steel is real, and you get on this bad boy out  on the trail, and you’ll know exactly what I mean!

Q: And what does this mean for the future of Gary Fisher, the man?

A: Oh crap, this means it’s time to get to work! In the past, I always felt like we were doing our own thing on the sidelines, but now I’m front and center! I will work more closely with the team, and that’s going to be a delight. Unfortunately, this means my months of vacationing in the Caribbean are over… that is, unless they get some WiFi down there!

Trek Absorbs Gary Fisher

The Gary Fisher Collection will feature 29er, cyclocross, road, utility and urban bikes.

The announcement, so far, has produced the expected boos and cheers, as well as many questions. At Fisher's 2010 product launch last summer , brand officials said that the Fisher brand was doing very well, with sales increasing, sometime doubling, every year since 2005. However, about a year ago, Trek pulled the brand, which it has owned since 1993, out of the GAS (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) market in response to lackluster 29er interest in that part of the world.

Fisher's 2010 line, by our estimation, was their strongest ever. With 29ers, Fisher seemed to find a strong, unique identity and Trek wisely didn't cannibalize Fisher by introducing Trek-branded 29ers. Once 29ers began to gain traction for Fisher, Trek seemed to loosen the reins a bit and give the brand room to roam: Fisher had unique and funky bikes like the attractive Simple City town bikes , and steel cyclocross and singlespeed mountain bikes that Trek didn't. The introduction of Fisher road bikes in 2010 (possibly to fill the hole left when Trek shut down the LeMond brand) did raise some eyebrows, but Fisher did a good job of selling a different story (race-bike performance, comfort concessions in geometry, utilitarian features), and building in unique features - like elegant, removable fender attachments - so they weren't seen as just a rebadged Madones.

It's likely we'll never know the decision-making process that went down behind closed-doors at Trek's HQ, but it's a safe guess that, in part, it had something to do with money: spending less, making more, or both. We sat down with Gary Fisher Collection Brand Manager Travis Ott and Gary Fisher himself for a quick interview.

Bicycling: Why was the Gary Fisher stand-alone brand shut down? At the product launch just last year, we were told how well the brand was doing.

Ott: Fisher mountain full suspension bikes for the 2010 model year is up 66% - things are going great. However, if we run the tape back to last fall, there's 1,800 Trek dealers out there, and about 600 of them are Fisher dealers. Two of the biggest categories out there are 29ers and dual sport. Two-thirds of that Trek dealer base is asking for 29ers and dual sport. We listen to that and we try to respond to that. So, we think, maybe it's time to do Trek 29ers and maybe it's time to do Trek dual sports, even though Fisher is already offering those products. So, it really called into question our whole strategy with the Fisher and Trek brands being separate. And we looked at [rolling Fisher into the Trek brand] some more, and we thought, when you do this, it's good for Fisher and it's good for Trek in terms of reducing redundancies internally. As opposed to having two engineering teams working on 29ers simultaneously each trying to come up with the best 29er that are somehow different than each other, have teams come up with that one best 29er possible. In terms of distribution, we can bring those bikes to the world now as well. As part of being aligned with Trek, we benefit from Trek's distribution. So, we can focus on popularizing 29ers and dual sports world wide.

BI: How long was this change in the works?

TO: Since fall of 2009.

BI: Could Trek dealers sell Gary Fisher bikes before? If a customer walked into a Trek dealer and wanted a Superfly 100, could the Trek dealer order one even if it wasn't stocking Fisher bikes?

this image is not available

TO: Trek-only dealers did not have access to Fisher bikes. If you were a Fisher-only dealer you did not have access to Treks. For dealers who were already carrying Trek and Fisher, this is all gravy. We just made their business simpler, we gave them a bunch of new product as a result, too. For those Trek dealers who were not carrying Fisher: they're stoked, this is Christmas. They get 29ers, they get dual sport and they get them from a brand they're familiar with.

BI: Were there any Gary Fisher-only dealers that did not sell Trek? What happens to them?

TO: There are some Fisher-only dealers who are picking up the whole Trek line. Or, they're that Fisher only dealer on Main Street, but then there's a Trek dealer just down the way on Main Street as well. There's going to be a conflict there and we need to work that out. There's the potential for some of the Fisher-only dealers to just go away, and there's the potential for some Fisher-only dealers to pick up the whole line, depending on what the situation is. That's case-by-case basis, and that's something our sales department is working out.

BI: In what way, if any, is this related to Fisher's rough go in the European market? Will Trek be able to better sell 29ers in Europe than Fisher?

TO: I sure hope so. The reason why that happened was we came out with the statement, "Fisher is all about 29ers." Europe was not all about 29ers at the time. And so you take the 29ers out of the equation and the Fisher lineup was pretty sparse. So they decided it wasn't worth carrying. Now as a part of the Trek line, it does make it more attractive because it's a brand that has maybe a little more traction over there. Part of it just comes down to something as simple as: are 29ers going to catch on in Europe? You're kinda seeing the rumblings the groundswell is happening and they're going to catch on and it's starting to happen over there. As that happens, Trek is poised really well to take advantage of that. With the Fisher collection they have the broadest offering of 29ers out there and they're ready to help push it. You've got Gary as a spokesman for it, so we gotta' get him over there to make a big deal about it.

BI: What happens to the Fisher race team?

TO: They become the Subaru Trek team, racing exclusively on Fisher Collection 29ers.

BI: It seemed like Fisher finally had achieved a great independent identity: now that they're rolled into the Trek bike line - which is now mind-bogglingly huge - how does the "Fisher" name maintain its identity?

TO: You kinda hit at the core question of this whole brand exercise that we're doing: when we do this. We want to retain some of that equity that we've built up over the years. We've spent a lot of time with Gary establishing ourselves as this little left of center brand. There's a lot of guys out there who really dug that and you know are going to be bummed to see that go away. But, it's really not, because everything about Fisher we felt was worth preserving we really made an effort to try and preserve. The whole hook here is that these are Gary's visionary ideas executed by the best bike maker on earth: Trek. All of the bikes Gary wanted ever to do, and the resources of Trek, the doors just flung open now and now he's got free reign to make that happen. We have that many more retailers now, so correspondingly, volume increases. His bikes get higher priorities, and you get more resources allocated as a result. Bikes like the Transport, a niche bike, as a Fisher bike, that would be called into question: are we doing that bike? How many of those are we really going to sell? Put that under the Trek umbrella, you're going to sell more. So, things like [the Transport] we can go forward with. You give it more resources and you can bring better, more interesting bikes to market, which is something Gary's stoked on and I'm pretty excited about as well. If you look at these bikes, they don't look like the other Trek bikes. We really wanted to retain a unique identity. They have a unique story, there's less redundancy, less product overlap. We're doing an in-store cornerstone section for dealers. So, if they want to [they can] merchandise these bikes separately, unique from the Trek bikes. The Fisher collection will have it's own unique look and marketing as a result. You're going to be seeing Fisher Collection ads, and those will look different than Trek ads. It's taking the Trek look and twisting it 90 degrees. There will be this uniqueness to it, and that's something that's central to Gary and the Fisher thing. He's always been an individual and we want to retain that quality of it. That goes, of course, all the way into the bike lineup. If you look at it, there's something unique about all those bikes that you don't get within the Trek-proper lineup. It doesn't necessarily have to be high end: you can have a unique $400 bike. It's Gary's visionary ideas brought to life by Trek. That's the central tenant.

BI: Do you think a Trek Madone and Trek Gary Fisher Collection Cronus side-by-side on a shop floor will confuse bike buyers?

TO: No, I don't think so. It will have a different look than the Madone. There's clear product differentiation as well. Here's the Madone: this is the bike that Lance rides. Here's the Cronus: it has some pretty smart little features on it. They each have different stories. It would be more confusing if it was just graphical, but since there is a clear distinction between the products, people will get it.

BI: Does Trek start paring one or both lines now to be more complementary, with less overlap? TO: Here's a fun fact. In 2010 model year, we had 76 bikes in the Fisher lineup. In 2011, the Fisher Collection has 51. This allows us to clean up a lot of redundancies. Fisher kid's bike, gone. 26-inch hardails, we pared that down to four models this year. Those bikes are in the $350 to $600 price range where dealers just need choice. In the road line up: some of the aluminum bikes were redundant with Trek. We focus on only doing bikes that have a distinct story to tell that are different from the Treks. Going forward, we want to do bikes that distinguish themselves from Trek. That can take any number of forms.

BI: What happens to the "Gary Fisher" employees at Trek?

TO: They're all still here. No one has lost their job because of this. We're not contracting. There's still a product manager who's in charge of the Gary Fisher Collection, that's Aaron Mock. There's still the Gary Fisher Marketing guy, that's me [Travis Ott]. There's still the Gary Fisher Collection graphic designer, Jesse LaLonde. The core team is still in tact. Forecast wise, this will be the best year Fisher has ever had at Trek. We can bring more bikes to more people.

BI: What will Gary's involvement be going forward?

Gary Fisher: I, by no means, disappear. I gotta' get out and make a big fuss and do what I've done before, but I've got a lot more horsepower behind me now. Fisher, compared to Trek, we were tiny compared to them. Our budget was tiny: and now the budget's increased, believe me. And the importance has increased, believe me. I'm still in it, and I've got bigger responsibilities than ever before. These guys in the videos and stuff, they're claiming that I got great ideas. Well, guess what? I gotta come through. It hit me yesterday evening: wow man, I've got some more responsibility. And then it hit me: cool! It means [I have to] really plan and help visualize what we're going to do in the next five to ten years. What trends are going to get hold, and how to execute it. The 29er thing, I'm all proud in a manner, but in a way, I'm not, because it took 10 years to make the bike really right and have the market come around. If we had used the proper horsepower, we coulda done it in three. [Today] everybody says [of 29ers], "Oh Gary, you must be so proud." And, I'm thinking to myself, well, to a degree, it was a failure; in that it took 10 years. It took too long.

A quick scan of the "Gary Fisher Collection" at the Trek website reveals not only new branding and graphics, but new and updated "2011" models. There are now two Superfly 100 carbon full suspension race bikes (only one models was offered in 2010). The HiFi and Rumblefish 29er full suspension bikes carry forward with updated drivetrain spec. One model conspicuously missing: the Roscoe , Fisher's only remaining 26"mountain bike. The 140mm Roscoe debuted the Trek-Corp.-exclusive Fox DRCV shock (it's now found on Trek's Fuel EX and Remedy bikes, as well as the Rumblefish), and was one of the best trail bikes around. The 29er hardtail line has a few tweaks also: the one-model Superfly carbon hardtail becomes a two-bike line. The stunning Superfly SS singlespeed frame carries over. Fisher Genesister (GS) tag for women's bikes gets replaced with Trek's WSD tag now. One surprise in the hardtail line is the Sawyer ($1430) : A retro-style cantilevered steel frame with steel rigid fork and 2x9 drive train. Other line notes of interest: A carbon cyclocross bike appears (Cronus CX, $3680) , and the beautiful Simple City bikes vanishes. Extracycle-like "Urban Utility" bikes pop up: the Transport+ (price not available) receives a 350 watt electric assist motor; the Transport is much the same, but loses the electric assist. Fisher's just launched and well received "Race-Utility" bikes, the Cronus and Ion, are still offered. Check out a video review of the Cronus here.
