CrunchBase launches its official app for iOS

CrunchBase , the database of startups, announced today the launch of its iOS app. The app allows users to look up information about companies, acquisitions, investors, funding rounds and business news, just as the website does.

“Now our users have the fastest way to search for innovative companies and leaders, read the CrunchBase Daily, and see what’s trending right at their fingertips,” said Jager McConnell, CrunchBase CEO, in a press release.

It’s not really clear if anybody would ever use the CrunchBase app over the website, especially because people are not crazy about news apps anymore. According to a  report by The Knight Foundation quoted by Poynter , the growth of mobile news apps has slowed, with adoption rates mostly flat across the industry.

The finding matches results from a SurveyMonkey study, which revealed that the most downloaded and the most used apps in the U.S . in the first six months of 2016 are social media and messaging apps. News apps are neither listed in the top 30 of the most downloaded apps nor in the top 30 of the most used apps.

However, the fact that CrunchBase provides users with an extensive database about startups might encourage people to download the app.

Developed alongside TechCrunch, CrunchBase started spinning out from AOL/Verizon last September thanks to an investment of Emergence Capital.

The CrunchBase app is available starting today at the App Store.

TripActions Looks To Thaw Out IPO Pipeline

Palo Alto, California-based TripActions has confidentially filed to go public next year.

The news was first reported by Business Insider . The company is aiming for a $12 billion valuation in Q2 of next year, according to the report. The report also said Goldman Sachs has been hired to handle the listing.

The business travel startup last raised $275 million in a Series F round led by Greenoaks Capital last October at a $7.25 billion valuation. In May, Bloomberg reported the company was in negotiations to raise funding at a $9 billion valuation.

The news comes as the IPO market is going through its slowest period in years. Many tech startups have shied away from going public as many of its already-listed brethren have seen their shares take significant haircuts since the beginning of the year.

Few big tech startups have looked to unplug the IPO pipeline. One exception is Instacart , which in May made news when the grocery delivery service said it had filed paperwork for a public listing.

Founded in 2015, TripActions has raised $1.5 billion. While the company now boasts a healthy valuation, times have not always been good for the startup.

TripActions looked like it would become one of the first casualties of COVID-19 when the pandemic took hold in March 2020. With all travel stopped, the company saw its revenue drop to $0. CEO and co-founder Ariel Cohen openly talked about the problems, including laying off 300 people.

However, in June 2020, the company was able to secure $125 million in debt and doubled down on its newly launched expense reporting platform—a platform that became popular as many were working from home and had new expenses.

By early 2021, the company was able to raise a $155 million Series E.

Big-named investors in TripActions include Andreessen Horowitz , Lightspeed Venture Partners , Akkadian Ventures , Zeev Ventures and Elad Gil .

'That's the Lord's chicken.' Trump visits Atlanta Chick-fil-A before fundraiser

The Chick-fil-A off of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Atlanta is used to dealing with the morning rush as one of the busier franchises in the area. But this morning was a little different.“Get ready for some milkshakes,” former President Donald Trump told Chick-fil-A staff on Wednesday, surprising customers with a drop-in while on the way to a fundraising luncheon in the city.

The interaction, which quickly went viral across social media, showed Trump buying 30 milkshakes and “some chicken” for customers and supporters.

One moment at the fast-food restaurant has caught special attention among conservatives on X , formerly Twitter: Some banter between a Trump and a supporter. Pundits thought the woman, who is Black, was referencing her race as she encouraged the former president, “I don’t care what the media tells you, Mr. Trump, we support you!”

Today’s visit marks the second time Trump has come to Georgia in a little over a month, showing that the state will once again be an important battleground in the 2024 presidential election.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution , the fundraiser cost $6,600 to attend, with an additional $25,000 fee per couple for a photo opportunity with the 45th president. Those expected to be in attendance included former U.S. Senators David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, as well as prominent figures of the Georgia business sector, including Bernie Marcus of Home Depot and poultry industry billionaire Tommy Bagwell.

In all, the fundraiser was expected to rake in more than $5 million for the embattled candidate, who currently owes nearly $470 million for his various legal troubles , including cases over hush money and election fraud.

But at his stop before the fundraiser, the former president appeared more interested in the chicken he was about to be served. “That’s the Lord’s chicken,” Trump quipped.

Before Silicon Valley trip, Murphy touts NJ's AI sector at Princeton summit

Gov. Phil Murphy will head to Silicon Valley and Hollywood in California this weekend in a bid to pitch New Jersey’s film and high tech sectors — especially artificial intelligence — to businesses out west. 

On Thursday, Murphy addressed an artificial intelligence summit hosted at Princeton University — a sector he’s referred to as a “moonshot” industry in the Garden State.

“We’re coming together to think ahead about one of the most positive and promising and potentially disruptive developments in human history,” the governor said Thursday afternoon. 

New Jersey, Murphy continued during his keynote address, is “perfectly positioned to lead the way in harnessing generative AI to address some of our world’s greatest challenges.” 

Murphy’s economic mission will run April 14 to 17, according to business magazine ROI-NJ . It will feature the first lady, Tammy Murphy, as well as Tim Sullivan, head of the state Economic Development Authority, and Wesley Matthews, head of Choose NJ, a nonprofit started by former Gov. Chris Christie to pay for the governor’s economic missions . 

Choose NJ spokesperson Ingrid Austin said the trip will take Murphy and his entourage through Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay area and Hollywood in Los Angeles, and that the nonprofit will pay for this trip.

“While industries like filmmaking and technology have long found a home on the West Coast, the truth is today, there is a whole new world of opportunity opening up right here in the Garden State,” Murphy, a Democrat, said last month in Atlantic City . 

What is AI? What's it used for?

AI, and more specifically generative AI, is a technology that processes data from the internet like a human brain to create content — text, pictures, video, music — based on users' instructions. 

Its emergence has meant that suddenly people who weren't computer scientists and didn't know how to write code could get their computer to perform tasks in seconds that would have take them minutes, hours or days to do in the past: respond to emails, write marketing brochures, design a magazine cover.

Technological applications in AI could range from fusion control to the power grid, chip design, home assistants and surgery, said Mengdi Wang, an associate professor at Princeton University’s Center for Statistics and Machine Learning.

Generative AI could be used for more mundane tasks that could otherwise take hours or days, and data searching becomes easier. 

At the forefront was OpenAi , a company based in San Francisco that was founded in 2015 to create a generative AI platform available to the public.

Its financial backers have included Elon Musk, Amazon and Microsoft. And it has rolled out ChatGPT, which generates text, and DALL-E , which generates digital images, with new versions providing increasingly human-like responses.

A recent report by the Pew Research Center found that 23% of American adults have used AI chatbot ChatGPT, up from 18% last July. 

“It’s like a Wild West,” said Aaron Price, chief executive officer of Tech United, a trade group for New Jersey’s high-tech industry. “Parts of the technology are very mature, parts of the technology are immature.” 

Comes with major downsides, needs 'guardrails'

The technology comes with massive downsides.

The federal Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency warned that ahead of the 2024 elections , generative AI could be used by foreign adversaries, cybercriminals and any member of the public to depict political figures in compromising positions or saying controversial statements that they didn’t actually make. 

USA TODAY reported on the prevalence of AI-generated nude images of famous and non-famous people alike. Graphic images generated of Taylor Swift were one glaring example. ChatGPT meanwhile has been used to generate academic essays by students, essentially cheating. 

“It needs some guardrails,” Teik Lim, president of the Newark-based New Jersey Institute of Technology, said in an interview last month.

AI-generated content could, for example, be required to display a prominent disclaimer that it is AI-generated, Lim said.

Kristin Dana, a computer engineering professor at Rutgers University, said that in some cases, AI might have trouble with such basic tasks as discerning between a school bus and an ostrich, given the right conditions. 

“Deep learning can fail in surprising ways,” she said at the Princeton summit, in reference to the process by which AI teaches something to a computer. 

What's NJ doing with AI?

In December, Murphy and Princeton University President Christopher Eisgruber said they would establish an AI hub at the Ivy League school. It would, under the plans, bring jobs and economic development while pushing forward the state’s AI industry.

New Jersey has an artificial intelligence task force , which is responsible for analyzing the potential social impacts and risks that come with artificial intelligence. The task force is also responsible for educating the state’s workforce and offering recommendations to authorities.

Fairleigh Dickinson University's Madison campus is sponsoring a contest for middle school and high school students worldwide to create content using ChatGPT , the free AI system.
