When you search for airfare from your home airport to your destination airport, you're getting an inflated price. Search engines just show you whatever predetermined fares the airlines have decided it costs to get you there, along with connections that are often either rushed and hectic or long and boring in places you're not interested in going.

I book one-way flights almost exclusively. One great reason is to build fun stopovers into your route. It can give you the opportunity to turn one vacation into many -- while saving several hundred dollars in airfare. There's a science to it.

I'll show you the tools that make it easy for you to sniff out a cheap route to your destination while adding exciting stopovers.

trip first stop

What is a stopover?

When most people plan for a trip, they're only focused on point A and point B. Any extra stops in between are a hassle. Here are some helpful definitions of what happens to you on the way to your vacation:

  • Connection : Any point during your journey when you have to stop at an airport that isn't your origin or destination. If your flight isn't nonstop, you've got a connection. Common parlance implies that these are normal, unremarkable stops (not hours and hours long).
  • Layover : This definition is more rigid. For domestic flights, a layover is a connection lasting less than four hours. If you're flying internationally, a layover is any connection less than 24 hours.
  • Stopover : If flying domestically, a stopover is any connection lasting more than four hours. If flying internationally, a stopover is any connection lasting more than 24 hours

Stopovers can either be really, really inconvenient (spending an extended period of time wandering the airport corridors), or very enriching (leaving the airport for some tourism in a city other than your destination). The latter is what this post is about.

When you build a stopover into your travels, you can make them for as long as you want (months, even!). It's a fun way to turn a boring commute into a hopscotch of bucket-list items -- and if you know the strategy, you can do it while paying far less for airfare than had you gone straight to your final destination.

Example: Building stopovers to Europe

As our example, I'll search from my home airport of Cincinnati to the island of Malta. The lowest price I can find is in early October for $952 round-trip. As you can see from the below screenshot, that's quite low. Google even claims the price is $1,240 cheaper than usual (that seems a bit steep). No matter, we can handily beat this price -- and throw in three or more fun stopovers while we're at it.

trip first stop

Google Flights has this really cool map search function that allows you to enter an origin airport but not a destination. If you're unfamiliar with Google Flights, read our Google Flights guide to become an instant expert. Just as a refresher, here's how it works:

  • Input your home airport
  • Leave the destination blank and click "Search"
  • Make your dates flexible by clicking "Trip in the next 6 months"
  • See the cheapest destinations around the world from your home airport

With this tool, you can basically mine cheap routes from any city. Once you figure out the notably inexpensive routes, you'll just have to play with dates to find the best prices. Let's walk through it.

Related: Guide to Google Flights

Step 1. Search hubs from your home airport

Note that this entire post will be a series of one-way searches.

Enter your home airport to see cheap routes from your origin. My home airport is Cincinnati. I simply leave the destination blank, search with flexible dates, and then slide that price filter (left side of the page) as low as it will go to search flights costing $50 and under.

My results are below. These flights will almost certainly be nonstop. I've highlighted hub airports I wouldn't mind having as a stopover: New York, Miami, San Francisco and Washington, DC. I'll keep these four airports in mind as I'll need them in step 3.

trip first stop

Step 2. Search hubs from your destination airport

I'm now repeating step 1 except I'm searching from my destination (Malta) instead of my home airport. I'm looking to see which cities offer cheap service to Malta. There are plenty -- most of Europe is super cheap once you get to the continent. I've again noted some fun options that I'd enjoy as a stopover, like Edinburgh, Vienna, Porto and Rome.

trip first stop

Step 3. Search routes between your stopover-worthy cities

Another fun feature of Google Flights is that you can search up to five origin airports at once. I'll now enter my choice stopover destinations from step 1 (Miami, New York, Chicago) into Google Flights, but again keep the destination blank. I'll then swing the map over to Europe to see any potential cheap transatlantic routes. I put the price filter at $300 or under, as that's all I'm willing to pay.

This instantly gives me hundreds of permutations between all airports in Europe. Now all I have to do is cross-reference the cheapest European airports with the airports that fly to Malta and then choose the one I want to visit the most.

trip first stop

As you can see, the cheapest flight to Europe is to Porto, Portugal. Clicking on the city reveals that the flight originates in Newark. For $167, I'll gladly make a stop in Portugal, the magical land of castles, wine and cobblestone streets.

Step 4. Enter your route into the Google Flights multi-city tool

The above steps have led me to the following itinerary:

  • Cincinnati to Newark
  • Newark to Porto
  • Porto to Malta

I know it's possible to score a deal on all these routes. I'll pull up Google Flights again, and input these airports into the multi-city tool. Dates don't matter yet.

trip first stop

Step 5. Check the dates for each leg separately

The next step is to check all three legs separately to find a cheap date for each. This may be the most time-intensive portion of your research, though I don't find it to be a burden (it's actually fun). Just open a separate tab for each leg and pull up Google Flights to do your pricing.

My first leg is Cincinnati to New York. I've highlighted the cheapest dates in yellow. After I find the cheap fare I want, I'll look at the flights from New York to Portugal and Portugal to Malta. I'll tinker with the dates until the prices are low across the board and the time spent at each stopover is to my liking.

trip first stop

Step 6. Plug the cheap dates into your multi-city itinerary

Once you find your dates, head back over to your tab with the multi-city search and begin plugging in your dates. From Cincinnati to New York, I chose October 4. It's the cheapest date at $69 one-way.

trip first stop

Step 7. Book your ticket

After you've figured out how long you'd like to stay at each destination (along with low prices), you can view your final ticket price and book! The below one-way route from Cincinnati to Malta costs $260 (before any baggage fees). That's about $400 cheaper than simply searching for a one-way flight from Cincinnati to Malta.

trip first stop

Step 8. Use the same process to get home

You can use this exact same strategy for your return flight as well -- though it would be understandable if you tried to find the most direct route home after all that traveling.

After spending a few days in Malta, I built-in a four-day stopover in Paris, which set me up for a super cheap transatlantic flight back to New York. I tried to keep that connection as small as possible, as I'd already had a stopover in New York on my outbound journey. New York was just a necessary evil to cross the ocean for cheap.

trip first stop

Total cost for a round-trip?

The total cost of this ticket is $629 (plus potential bag fees, depending on the airline). That's $323 cheaper than that fare to Malta we looked at earlier -- a 34% savings! And if you're traveling with a friend or family member, you'd collectively save nearly $650. Plus, you get free visits to:

For the same price, I could have strategically tossed in a few more destinations like Las Vegas, Italy, Lanzarote and London. That's even further removed from reality for the average traveler, though. Trying to keep it plausible over here.

Beware of booking flights too close together

Yes, booking your own routes can save several hundred dollars over allowing the airline to work it out for you. But you're destined to spend a lot of money at your stopover cities.

If you're purely trying to save money on the way to your destination (i.e. not interested in side-trips), you'll have to schedule each leg closely together. The biggest caveat here is that if one flight is delayed for some reason, you could miss a series of future flights. Remember, you'll have to re-check your bags and go back through airport security for each flight.

Related: Best credit cards with trip delay reimbursement in 2021

Build time for complications into your itinerary. And be sure to use a credit card with travel insurance to buy your flights in case of trip delays or cancellations.

Search by city, not by airport

Google Flights allows you to enter city names instead of just airports. By entering the city, you'll find discounts you otherwise wouldn't have if you'd just typed in the airport code. For example, instead of typing in CDG for flights to Paris, you can just type "Paris," and Google Flights will search for routes that include other airports that serve the Paris area:

Some of these airports specialize in low-cost carriers, so you'll often see lower fares that don't fly to Charles de Gaulle, the main airport serving Paris.

The same goes for any city served by multiple airports. Type New York instead of JFK, San Francisco instead of SFO, London instead of LHR, etc.

Use miles and points for the outbound or return

Hopping around is fun -- for a while. But if you've built a load of stopovers into your outbound journey, you may just want to get home without any extra hassle. In that case, use miles to book a flight home from whatever obscure airport you're at to whatever obscure airport you're from.

For example, a flight from Malta to Cincinnati (generally) costs 30,000 American Airlines miles and ~$110 in taxes and fees. Yeah, that means you'll only save $257 over the return itinerary we pieced together -- and you won't get a stopover in Paris -- but it's effortless, and there's nothing to think about. American will carry your travel-weary cadaver all the way back to your bed at home.

How to avoid the worst low-cost airlines

Some of these fares are ridiculously cheap. Like, fly across Europe for $12 cheap. The problem is that some airlines often nickel-and-dime you; sometimes it feels like they go out of their way to make your trip miserable, whether it's charging to use the bathroom, lambasting you with advertisements or meticulously designing seats for optimum discomfort.

If flying Ryanair is out of the question for you, narrow your search by clicking the "Airlines" tab at the top of the Google Flights search map and checking all the alliances. Most low-cost carriers aren't part of an alliance.

trip first stop

Skyscanner is a good supplementary tool

Similar to Google Flights, Skyscanner allows you to search for flights to anywhere, as well. It's a little more functional than Google's tool in a couple of ways:

  • You can search for flights to everywhere nearly a year into the future with Skyscanner. Google Flights only allows for flexible dates up to six months in advance
  • Your origin can be broad with Skyscanner. For example, you can type in "United States," whereas Google requires an actual origin airport

This can be a good tool for finding the long legs of your journey. If you enter the U.S. as the origin and Europe as the destination and then select the "Cheapest month," it'll give you a very digestible list of European destinations, sorted by price. Click on the destination to see the specific route.

Bottom line

You can easily save hundreds of dollars by locating a series of cheap one-way flights to reach your destination -- and swing by a few other enchanting locations while you're at it. Be sure to book your flights with a travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, which covers you in case your flights are canceled or delayed. It's also got a 60,000-point bonus after spending $4,000 within the first three months of account opening. That's worth $1,200 in travel, per TPG valuations (and a ton more if you know how to redeem Chase Ultimate Rewards for maximum value ).

How to Plan Route With Multiple Stops on Google Maps

Google Maps is one of the most reliable tools out there. Whether we want to look for new restaurants, navigate to a new city, or search for a nearby gas station, Maps is always there to rescue us. However, not many people know that they can even add multiple stops in Google Maps while planning a route. In this article, we will exactly show you how to do that.

Table of Contents

How Multiple Stops Work in Google Maps

The working principle of Google Maps is quite simple. Just add multiple destinations and it will automatically create the best route for you. It supports up to 9 stops, excluding your current location or starting point. Moreover, based on the order of your destination, it will show you the routes and travel times. And the best part is it even lets you add a new stop in the middle of your trip.

But keep in mind that for an efficient trip, it’s important to rearrange the stops based on your priority. Don’t just blindly add destinations in any order, as this might increase travel time and cause inconvenience.

Tip: Do you own a Galaxy Watch? You can now use Maps right on your smartwatch .

How to Add Multiple Stops in Google Maps

Adding multiple destinations in your Google Maps app is quite easy and only requires a few steps. Here’s how it works:

1. Open Google Maps on your iPhone or Android phone and then tap on the Direction icon (right arrow inside the box) in the bottom right corner.

2. From there choose your starting location and destination location.

choose your starting location and destination location.

Note: Google will pick your current location as your Start Location. However, you can adjust that location to something else accordingly.

3. Once done, tap on the Kebab Menu (three-dots icon) and select the Add stop option.

select the Add Stop option

4. After that, tap on the Add stop bar and enter the address in the Choose destination box.

enter the address in the Choose Destination box

You can also add a stop from the map. Simply tap on the POI (Point of Interest) icon and hit the Add stop button.

Reminder: You can add up to nine stops only.

5. Then rearrange the stops using the drag icon and the X icon to remove the stop.

6. Once that part is over, tap Done to finish the setup process.

7. After that, select the mode of transportation and then hit the Start button.

Note: Multiple stops in Google Maps don’t support public transportation like buses, metro, or trains.

That’s all. It will now begin navigating directions with multiple stops.

How to Remove a Stop from an Ongoing Route

If you’ve already started a trip and later decide to skip a particular stop, you don’t need to exit your navigation to remove the stop from Google Maps. Here’s how to do it:

1. Tap on the bottom bar and select the Directions option.

select the Directions option

2. Now click on the X icon (Cross icon) to remove any stop from an ongoing route.

Remove a Stop from an Ongoing Route

In case you want to remove the next stop, simply tap on the bottom bar and select the Remove next stop option. This is one of the quickest ways to remove a stop in Maps unless you’re removing the stop at a specific number or position.

Remove Next Stop

Tip: You can create a handy list of places to visit in Google Maps . That will make it easy to plan your journey and begin navigation on the fly. Just one of the places that you already added to the list.

How to Add a New Stop to an Ongoing Route

You may want to add more stops to your route while you’re on a trip. Thankfully, Google Maps allows you to easily add a new stop to your ongoing route without closing the navigation. Here’s a step-by-step process:

1. Tap on the Search icon in the top right corner or bottom bar and select the Search along route option to enter the address .

Search along route

2. Now all you need to do is tap on the Add stop button.

Add a New Stop to an Ongoing Route

Alternatively, you can also select the places or POI (Points of Interest) icon from the map itself and hit the Add stop button.

Tip: How to Check Air Quality Index and Wildfires on Google Maps

That’s it. The new location will be added to your stop list.

But the only caveat is that Google Maps doesn’t allow users to rearrange the stops in the middle of the navigation. Therefore, any new stops you add will be in the top order by default. To reorder stops in Google Maps, follow the below steps:

1. Go back to the Route Editing Screen and then tap the Direction Panel .

2. After that, use the drag icon to rearrange the stops accordingly.

3. Once you’re done rearranging the stops, tap the Done button and start your navigation again.

Optimize Route in Google Maps

While you’re planning a route with multiple stops in Google Maps, there are numerous ways to optimize your trip. Here are some notable ones:

1. Share your trip progress with others. This allows them to view your routes, recent location, battery status, and mode of transportation.

2. Enable the Show Traffic on Maps feature to avoid congested routes and make better navigation decisions.

Share your trip progress with others

3. Enable or disable voice assistant according to your convenience.

4. You can also choose to exclude highways, tolls, and ferries from your route.

5. Switch to night mode to minimize the battery consumption on your phone (valid on phones featuring an OLED panel).

Avoid highways, tolls, and ferries in Google Maps

Adding Multiple Stops on Google Maps

Still, using an old-school method to navigate from one place to another? Now make your traveling more organized by adding multiple stops in Google Maps. And when required, rearrange the stops based on your priority. We hope the above guide was helpful and will assist you in making your journey smoother.

How to plan your first road trip: The easy 10 step guide

Planning your first road trip can be a daunting task, especially if you let yourself get overwhelmed by the details.

While it's true that there are lots of things to factor in, from time off work to booking hotel rooms along the route, that doesn't mean it's not doable!

In fact, anyone can plan the perfect road trip, even if they've never been on one before, as long as they plan ahead and have access to a car.

The key to planning your first road trip is deciding on the length of time you want to spend driving, where you want to go, how much money you can afford to spend, and what you want to get out of your trip.

Here's a simple ten-step guide to help you plan your first road trip and make it as memorable and epic as possible.

Step 1: Find out how much time you can take off

The first thing you need to think about is just how much time you can take off from work or school.

If you only have a week free, for instance, it's probably not feasible to do a massive trip around Australia, or to drive cross-country across the U.S.A.

Those long-distance adventures require a lot more time, and even if you could do them quickly, it's never good to rush a road trip!

Luckily, there are plenty of road trips that take under a week, like our scenic 6-day excursion along Scotland's North Coast 500 route .

Step 2: Decide where you want to go

Once you've settled on a length of time for your road trip, the next step is to choose which destination you want to travel to. This is often the trickiest part of the whole planning process. The world is your oyster, after all, and it's an awfully big one.

If you're struggling to decide where to go, ask yourself these questions:

i. Is language an issue?

English may be the lingua franca around the world, but some travellers don't feel comfortable not being able to communicate with the people they meet on the road.

If this is the case, it might be worth looking into doing a road trip in a place where they speak the same language.

The Great Ocean Road and the Gold Coast are both super popular routes in Australia, where you'll have no trouble getting around speaking English.

In Canada, you can see everything from glittering aquamarine lakes to cities, national parks and mountains on a road trip.

The UK has some incredibly scenic road trip routes ( South England , we're looking at you), and of course the U.S.A. is the unofficial home of road trips, with countless options available to you.

On the other hand, if you're up for a challenge or want to perfect a language you're in the midst of learning, there's no better way to immerse yourself than on a road trip.

You'll be able to practice asking for directions, ordering food, and making general conversation with locals, a sure-fire way to improve your language skills!

ii. How about money?

Another thing to consider when you're trying to decide where to go on a road trip is money.

If you're trying to stick to a tight budget, that will no doubt affect your decision. Some destinations are simply more expensive than others, especially when it comes to things like car rentals, petrol, hotel room costs and eating out.

On the cheaper end of the spectrum you have countries like Mexico, Thailand and Spain, where you can expect to pay between £40 and £60 per day on car hire and petrol combined.

Depending on which cities and towns you include on your road trip, the food and accommodation in these countries can also be pretty budget-friendly.

Norway, Iceland and Sweden tend to be on the more expensive side of the scale, with road-trippers having to fork out up to around £100 per day on car rental and fuel.

Of course, there are several ways you can keep your costs down while on the road, from making your own sandwiches to choosing a fuel-efficient vehicle.

But a good place to start when deciding which places to visit is to weigh up the costs in each destination.

iii. Do you want to go somewhere new?

For some people, the whole idea of travelling is to get away from all, and to get out of their comfort zone by experiencing something brand new and unfamiliar.

For others, it's the journey that matters; rolling down the windows, feeling the breeze, listening to music and watching the world go by.

If you're in the former camp, you'll probably want to go on your road trip in a place you've never been before.

Make a list of all the destinations that are on your travel bucket list, then narrow it down until you find the right place.

If you care more about the journey than the destination, or perhaps you prefer to be somewhere somewhat familiar, think about venturing just a little bit further out than you normally would.

A different state, region or county in your home country is a great place to start.

Man in a hat sits at a table looking at a map with binoculars, compass and other travel accessories

iv. How do you want to get there?

Do you plan on flying to the starting point of your road trip, or would you rather drive the whole way?

This is an important question to ask yourself when you're planning your first road trip.

If you want to take your own car there, obviously you have to choose somewhere that's within driving or car-ferrying distance of your home.

For road-trippers from London, this can be anywhere from Scotland and the Lake District to France, Belgium, or the Netherlands.

Opting to fly to your first road trip destination offers a lot more flexibility and options when it comes to where you can go.

It does mean, however, that you'll have to rent a car once you get there - which is an added cost that can be pretty hefty, depending on the country.

Deciding whether you want to fly or drive to your starting point is something you'll definitely have to consider when planning your first ever road trip.

Step 3: Plan your route

Now that you know where you're going, it's time to map out your route.

Here at LazyTrips, we strongly believe in a healthy dose of road trip spontaneity, even if it is your first time. There's nothing better than pulling off and taking a detour simply because something unexpected caught your eye.

This, in fact, is one of the main reasons we love road trips above all other means of transport. On a plane, a coach, a train or a group tour, you simply don't have the freedom to explore and discover at your own pace.

That being said, it's still wise to have a rough idea of where you plan to stop each day so that you can estimate driving time and find out where you need to book hotel rooms.

Start by searching your first stop on Google Maps and having a look at the towns and cities surrounding it. Click on the towns, and see if any of them strike your fancy based on the photos and descriptions provided online.

Keep an eye out also for any coastal routes, historic sights or national parks that look particularly intriguing, then factor them into your plan.

You can also ask your friends for tips, read a guidebook by Lonely Planet or Fodor's, and search the destinations on social media to see what pops up.

If you need any more inspiration for places to see along your road trip route, check out our Road Trips page, where we have some pre-planned itineraries in lots of amazing destinations.

You can always change and adjust the route according to your own personal preferences.

Step 4: Set some money aside

There's no getting around it: travelling in general is expensive, and that goes for road trips as well as every other type of trip.

Luckily, there are lots of ways to keep costs down and stick to a budget while you're on the road.

The first thing you need to do is set aside a pot of road trip money as soon as you decide you're going to go on one.

You don't have to put away loads, but as long as you donate a small percentage of your paycheck to the pot every month, it should start to add up.

Even once you have a bit of money saved up, you still need to make sure you don't blow it all on the first day of your road trip.

Try to make an effort to visit free attractions, minimise your eating and drinking out, and make your own coffee wherever possible (those daily £3 lattes can really add up!)

If you follow all these guidelines, you should be well prepared - economically at least - to embark on your first road trip.

A pot filled with money labelled 'Travel'

Step 5: Prep your car or select a rental

It's obvious, but no road trip can go ahead without a happy and fully functioning vehicle.

Breaking down in the middle of a road trip or having a flat tyre and no access to a spare is an easy way to spoil your holiday.

That's why an important step in planning your first road trip is making sure your car is up to scratch.

A couple of weeks before you set off, take your car to a mechanic for a professional tune up.

A mechanic can help make sure your vehicle will survive on the road by changing your oil, refilling your windshield wiper fluid, repairing any broken lights, and making sure your tyres are properly inflated.

You should also have them check the tread on your tyres, repair your brake pads if necessary, and check that your AC and heating work properly.

If you're planning on renting a car rather than using your own, now's the time to start researching what make and model you want to hire.

Luggage, people, and fuel efficiency are all things to consider when deciding what car to take on your first road trip.

Step 6: Book some hotel rooms along the way

As we said before, an element of spontaneity is a beautiful thing, especially when you're on a road trip.

But there's no harm in having at least some plans set in stone, to avoid the potential for total disaster on the road.

Imagine, for instance, you've mapped out the perfect route, only to discover there are no hotel rooms available in the town you've selected for night 1?

That's why it's important to book hotel rooms for at least the first few nights ahead of time.

If you know where you're staying and how much each room costs, it will also give you an idea of how much money you should (or shouldn't) be spending on other things that day.

You might want to book a luxury spa hotel in one destination, for instance, and balance out the cost by making your own sandwiches for lunch.

At LazyTrips, we have more than 300,000 hotel options in destinations all across the world, all at seriously affordable rates. Just type in the place you want to go into the hotel search bar and have a browse for some inspiration.

Step 7: Create a packing list

OK - you know where you're going, you know how you're getting there, you've planned your route and you know where you're staying.

Now it's time to get packing!

You may think of yourself as a pack-frantically-the-morning-of kind of person, but trust us - road trips are a different kind of travel.

There's nothing worse than being on the road and realising you've left something crucial behind at home.

When you're driving long distances, sometimes you won't see any shops for miles - which means replacing whatever it is you forgot can be a serious challenge, if not impossible.

Avoid calamity by composing a well thought-out packing list ahead of time.

Here are the things you need to consider:

Are you going somewhere cold?

If so, it's all about the layers! Make sure you put plenty of thick socks, scarves, jumpers and jackets into your suitcase. Throw in some waterproofs as well for good measure. Hat and gloves too!

Are you going somewhere warm?

Lucky you! The good thing about travelling somewhere with warm weather is that your bag will probably be significantly lighter.

That being said, there are a few things you'll absolutely need to bring along, including sunglasses, flip flops, sunscreen and a towel.

Will you be doing lots of physical exercise?

If you plan on hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, paddleboarding, or doing any other type of sport during your road trip, you'll need to make sure you have all the proper kit.

For hikes, those trendy sandals simply won't cut it. Pack a pair sturdy walking boots or trainers, as well as a lightweight T-shirt and athletic leggings or sweatpants.

Water sports obviously call for a swimsuit and towel, plus goggles if you plan on swimming. And if you're biking long-distance, don't forget to bring (or rent) a helmet and some cushioned bike shorts!

Are you travelling with kids?

Doing a road trip with kids or babies is a whole different story, and you don't know how different it is until it's your turn to do it for the first time!

As long as you plan ahead and make sure you pack all the necessities to keep the little ones happy and entertained, your road trip will be a seriously fun experience for everyone.

Make sure you bring along snacks, drinks, and plenty of changes of clothing for those times when you can't avoid a mess.

Activities and fun road trip games will also make the hours in the car fly by - in good way.

Picnic basket, blanket, clothes and bags packed into the boot of a car

Step 8: Get your documents in order

It's all well and good being mentally and physically prepared for a road trip, but it's equally important to make sure you've covered all the legal elements, too.

If you're road-tripping around America, you'll need to look into purchasing roadside service insurance. This guarantees you won't have to pay for a towing service if you happen to get stranded on the side of the highway.

Here are some documents you should make sure are in order and up to date before you go on your road trip:

  • Full driving license
  • Car insurance
  • Travel insurance
  • Breakdown number
  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if you're travelling in Europe

Step 9: Download some great playlists and podcasts

No matter how much you love driving, there's no denying that inevitably, it gets a little boring after a while.

Boredom is okay in itself, but it can become dangerous when it turns into tiredness, increasing your risk of falling asleep behind the wheel.

Plan ahead by downloading plenty of playlists filled with upbeat songs you and your travel companions love.

Another great way to keep yourself entertained on the road is by listening to a funny or fascinating podcast, or an engaging book on tape.

Some of our favourite podcasts are:

For adults:

  • This American Life
  • Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Kids
  • How I Built This

Kid-friendly:

  • Wow in the World
  • Story Pirates
  • What If World

Step 10: Go with the flow

Even if you follow all the steps above, there's bound to be some unexpected events on your first road trip - and that's okay.

It's important to go with the flow and simply appreciate the joy and freedom of a road trip, no matter where it takes you.

And if things don't go to plan, remember: it's about the journey, not the destination.

Driver pulled over on the side of the road with arms outstretched looking at ocean

Road trips are, by definition, incredible adventures, and ones that everyone can enjoy - as long as they are prepared and have some idea of what to expect.

Don't be disheartened if you've never done one before; it's simple, fun, and completely doable to plan your first road trip and make it a great one.

Where to Go if You've Never Traveled Before

trip first stop

Deciding to travel the world for the first time can be a daunting experience, no matter how much confidence you have. You’re heading out into the great unknown –- to an unfamiliar place where you may not even speak the language. How will you get around? What if you don’t make any friends ? What if you get scammed ? What if everything goes wrong?

For first-time travelers, I recommend starting out in a country that’s easy to travel through. Don’t jump in at the deep end and head off-the-beaten-track to a destination that sees little tourism and will be hard to get around. Instead, you should look to visit a place with a well-worn tourist trail, where you’ll be able to navigate with ease, giving you more opportunity to experience the place you’re traveling through.

These are five of my favorites.

Hands down, Southeast Asia is the best region to travel through if you’ve never done it before. It’s foreign, it’s exciting, it’s cheap, and it’s  easy .

In Southeast Asia, you’re guaranteed to make friends. It’s a rite of passage for backpackers all over the world, and there’s a well-worn path you’ll walk with them. If I had to narrow it down to just one country, though, I’d pick Thailand . It has beautiful beaches, tons of travellers to hang out with, a fascinating history, lots of temples, a delicious cuisine, it’s super cheap, it’s easy to get around, most locals you come into contact with will speak English… have I sold you on it yet?

Head to Thailand as your first stop and you’ll leave with happy memories and hundreds of friends. I’ve yet to meet anyone who  hasn’t  loved it.

If you don’t fancy heading quite so far abroad, fly to Mexico instead. Despite its reputation in much of the United States, Mexico is very safe if you’re a tourist and planning on spending time with other tourists.

Playa del Carmen and Tulum are great for partying, with lots of Americans to meet and hang out with on the beach. They’re also close to several of the Mayan ruins, so you’ll be able to get a culture fix, too.

Guanajuato is a good option if you’re looking to escape the chaos of the beaches and challenge yourself linguistically. English isn’t widely spoken there, but everyone’s friendly and patient if you want to try out your Spanish.

Sayulita is a fun surfing town on the Pacific Coast, with plenty of travellers to hang out with. It has more of a hippie scene than a party one, with cheap food, a beautiful beach, and lots of nearby towns to explore.

Getting around in Mexico is easy if you take ADO buses – they’re some of the best buses I’ve ever taken! The food is cheap and delicious. The people are lovely and welcoming. It’s even very affordable as well!

New Zealand

Why New Zealand over Australia? It’s more diverse, the locals are friendlier, and it’s cheaper. New Zealand is a great country to visit for your first trip abroad!

If the idea of conversing in a foreign language intimidates you, then this is the country to visit. It’s pretty similar to the United States in a lot of way, and you’ll be unlikely to experience culture shock.

One of the easiest ways to meet people in New Zealand is to join one of the affordable hop-on hope-off backpacker buses that traverse the length and width of the two islands. It makes transport easy, you’ll meet friends and be able to move on together, and you’ll even be able to arrange excursions through the company.

Spain is one of my favorite countries in Europe, and not just because it’s one of the cheapest countries to visit in the region. From beaches to mountains, castles to cosmopolitan cities, Spain has so much to offer.

And the food! The food is incredibly cheap in Spain (if you go to Granada, you receive a free plate of tapas for every drink you order), and features predominantly around jamon and cheese and bread.

Public transport is easy to understand in Spain. Major cities have metros and comprehensive bus networks. Traveling long-distance between cities is a piece of cake, too – with buses and trains serving pretty much every destination you’d want to go.

Did I mention the jamon ?

Slovenia doesn’t often make lists of top countries, but it’s actually my favorite country! Everyone who’s been to this country falls in love, and it has heaps to offer a newbie traveler.

Slovenia is beautiful. Take a look at the photos I took from my time in Ljubljana and Bled . In the space of a few hours, you can travel from a colourful city to the snow capped mountains and glimmering lakes of the Alps, to the beaches of Piran, to fascinating caves, to the vineyard-filled countryside of the east. No matter what sort of scenery you enjoy, Slovenia will have you covered.

The people are incredibly friendly in Slovenia, too. English is widely spoken. The food isn’t too intimidating. Public transport is easy to use. It’s a country that’s very into the arts, and you’ll hear music playing on every street. Slovenia is great if you’re not an experienced traveler.

The Most Beautiful Stations on the Moscow Metro

trip first stop

You might have heard that there are some beautiful metro stations in Moscow. Soviet decorations, chandeliers, mosaic painting and statues are common in many of the stations. The good news is that the Moscow Metro does not cost a lot of money and many of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro are on the same line, so you can almost get on and off at each station to visit these. Over the New Year holidays, I had a free afternoon and decided to visit some of these stations. Check out what I found below…..

The main stations that you will want to visit are on the Number 5 line, also known as the Circle Line. An advantage of this line is that you can get to it very easily and quickly no matter where you are in Moscow. The announcements on the metro are in Russian as well as English so you don’t need to worry if your Russian language skills are not good.

If, like me, you arrive in Moscow via train from Kyiv , then you will arrive at a metro station which many Muscovites believe to be the most beautiful of them all…..

Kievskaya metro station was opened in 1954 and features white marble walls which curve upwards and have with large mosaics surrounded by a gold trim in a very classical style. The mosaics depict life in Ukraine and was designed by a Ukrainian who wanted to display Ukraine’s influence and contribution to Soviet Russia.

Belorusskaya

If you look at a map of the metro , you will want to go in a clockwise direction on the circle line. So you will want to get on the train going in the Barrikadnaya direction and not Park Kultury. Stay on this line until you reach the 2nd station, Belorusskaya. This station was built in 1952 and like Kievskaya also features white marble pylons and a plaster ceiling.

The ceiling features 12 mosaics in an octagonal shape depicting Belarusian life, while the tiling on the floor is said to resemble a Belarusian quilt. One of the passageway exits of the station has a statue called ‘Belarusian Partisans’ of three men wearing long coats, holding guns and carrying a flag.”

Mayakovskaya

To get to the next station, we need to change onto the green line (line 2) and go just one stop to the station of Mayakovskaya. This station has an art deco theme and, for some, resembles an elaborate ballroom. The columns are faced with stainless steel and pink rhodonite while the marble walls and ceiling have 34 mosaics with the theme “24-hour Soviet Sky. Apparently, Stalin resided here during the 2nd World War as the station was used as a command post for Moscow’s anti-aircraft regiment.

Novoslobodskaya

It’s time to get back on the metro and return to Belorusskaya. At Belorusskaya, change to the circle line again and continue clockwise to the next station, Novoslobodskaya. With its 32 stained glass panels, this station reminds me of a church. The panels were designed by Latvian artists and are surrounded by a brass border.

Prospekt Mira

Back on the metro and again just one stop until our next station, Prospekt Mira. This station was originally called Botanichesky Sad after the nearby Botanical Gardens of the Moscow State University. The pylons are covered in white marble and decorated with floral bas-relief friezes. The ceiling is decorated with casts and several cylindrical chandeliers.

Komsomolskaya

On the metro once more and once more we are going just one stop to the next station – Komsomolskaya. This station is famous for its its yellow ceiling. The chandeliers in this station are huge. The photos below do not do this station justice.  For me, this station resembles a presidential palace.  You hace to see it for yourself to truly appreciate it.

Because of it’s location, this is one of the busiest stations in the Moscow metro as it serves three of the main train stations in the city – Leningradsky, Yaroslavsky, and Kazansky so be prepared for a lot of people.

Elektrozavodskaya

When you are ready to leave Komsomolskaya metro station behind, then get back on the circle line and go one stop to Kurskaya and change to the blue line (line 3) and go to two stops to the Elektrozavodskaya station. This station gets it’s name from a nearby electric light bulb factory and has a somewhat industrial but also futuristic style, with 6 rows of circular lamps (there are 318 lamps in total). I think this is one of the most beautiful stations on the Moscow metro for how unique it is. The station was opened in 1944 after a delay because of the 2nd World War and features 12 marble bas-reliefs of the struggle on the home front during the war.

Ploschad Revolyutsii

Back on the metro line 3 (but in the other direction), getting off at the 3rd stop – Ploschad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). This is located underneath the square in Moscow of the same name and is a short walk from Red Square in the city centre. It is the perfect place to end a visit around Moscow’s metro. The station features red and yellow marble arches with a total of 76 sculptures in between each arch. The sculptures are supposed to represent the people of the Soviet Union and include soldiers, farmers, industrial workers, children etc… I noticed a lot of people touching the golden chicken in the photo below as well as the show of the woman. I am assuming that this is for good luck.

Kievskaya definitely caught me off guard. Didn’t know Moscow metro stations were THIS extravagant! Mayakovskaya is gorgeous too with the marble walls and mosaics. I might just need to book a flight over to admire all of these!

Do it! Kievskaya was my first introduction to the Moscow metro as I got an overnight train from Kyiv.

You know, in the States, all we ever hear is bad stuff about Russia. It’s nice to see other (and lovely!) dimensions of such a controversial place.

It’s the same in the UK which is why I prefer going to see somewhere and making up my own mind. It’s all ‘politics and bullshit’ as I say

' src=

I went to Moscow about 13years for Christmas and went to train stations, so I can see these amazing mosaics and chandeliers. I agree with you that are beautiful Stations for sure and I could of wandered around for days. I think Kievskaya is definitely my favourite out of them all and I even have some similar pictures as you.

I imagine Moscow would have been a little different 13 years ago but these stations have probably always looked beautiful

Food and Footprints

You chose some great stations for this write up! Beautiful details in these stations and would love to visit them sometime. Particularly like the Komsomolskaya station with that yellow ceiling!

Thank you very much. Komsomolskaya seems to be a lot of peoples favourite stations too

Wow! Without the text I would have thought them to be some museum or gallery.

I know exactly what you mean!

Wow, it is just stunning! How does anyone get to work with so much to look at. I’m surprised at the very bourgeois-looking Komsomolskaya station. I would have thought it was all too Tzarist looking, but then I haven’t been to Russia yet lol. This has just made me want to go more!

' src=

Wow, that’s a lot of artwork. I wonder how old some of these pieces are?

Generally most of the stations are from 1940-1960 approximately. The later stations are more functional than style.

' src=

My mother-in-law was in Moscow fifty years ago and still raves about the metro stations. So far, I could not imagine much. But now! The pictures are great and I think it’s almost a pity that this splendor is underground. But for every user of the Metro can enjoy a free trip to the world of art. Susanne

True. It is like having a free trip to an art museum/gallery. I hope that you can one day visit Moscow and see for yourself.

' src=

Oh wow, I would never have known that these were metro stations. The ceilings remind me of how you need to look up sometimes, even in the commuter rush!

It is true about life in general, we just go from A to B looking directly in front of us instead of around us

' src=

Wow, I would have never guessed that these were stations. The decor is so pretty and not one I’m used to seeing at metro stations. Love the ceiling at The Komsomolskaya metro station.

They certainly don’t look like metro stations. The ceiling there is one of my favourites too!

An ultimate guide on Moscow Metro for first-comers

Travel tips for moscow.

trip first stop

Moscow public transport is very convenient and easy for first-comers to get around. Busses , trams , the metro , and the Moscow Central Circle are renovated and not really expensive, but there is a lifehack that tourists don’t usually know about. This ultimate guide will help you out. When you get to a metro station, what is the first thing you do? Correct, you get a ticket. So, you have to go straight to the ticket office and ask for a metro card called “ Troika ”. It costs 50 roubles, and this money is given back to you when you return the card (you can do it at any station you want, not necessarily at the one where you purchased it). Now, each of your rides costs 38 roubles, instead of 55 . Also, when you get a card, you don’t have any credit on it, so you have to top up your card at the ticket office or a ticket machine.

Where can it be used?

1) moscow metro.

Moscow metro is large, and it has more than 200 stations. You will never be late if you take Moscow Metro . Plus some stations are breath-taking, and they look like museums, for example Kievskaya , Park Pobedy , Novoslobodskaya . You can even book an excursion to learn more about the history of Moscow Metro !

2) Busses, trams and trolleys

Public transport in Moscow is the easiest way to get around, and if you don’t feel like spending your time under the ground, you can take a bus, a tram or a trolley. This kind of transport is more interesting as you can do some sightseein g while going to the city centre. The price is still the same, one ride costs 38 roubles.

3) Moscow Central Circle

Moscow Central Circle , an overland encircle line of metro, was opened a couple of years ago, and it helps out a lot of people every day. For tourists, Moscow Central Circle is useful because it’s another way of discovering Moscow . From the train, many places of interest can be observed: Moscow City Skyscrapers , Luzhniki Stadium and many more.

Moscow Transport is not expensive, but we can still save up some money when using it. This guide’s aim is to tell you about the “ Troika ” card that gives a 20 percent discount , and it’s very useful for first-comers who don’t feel like taking a taxi every now and then. Moreover, you can find out more about Russian culture in Moscow Metro, as it is a piece of art. Feel free to book an excursion there. Remember to give the “Troika” card back to the ticket office, so that you can help the environment (it takes about 400 years for plastics to decompose) and get back your 50 roubles .

3 New Hotels To Build A Trip Around In 2024 From Hawaii To Paris

Released on 04/24/2024

[Narrator] Every year, Conde Nast Traveler

releases its annual hot list,

which celebrates the best hotel openings and more

from around the world.

Here, a chic new addition to New York's NoMad District,

a reimagined and lovingly restored Hawaiian retreat,

and Paris's most exclusive new address are just three

of the standout properties on this year's hot list.

New York's NoMad neighborhood

has been an epicenter of cool new hotels

for over a decade now.

You know, the kind of places

that actually make the hotels the destination.

But we'd say none of the others here

nails the mix of high design, phenomenal food,

and just plain fun like The Fifth Avenue Hotel.

Immediately, you'll notice the design.

It's a whimsical riot of color and curiosities

from the mind of design master Martin Brudnizki.

Here he takes his cues from the building's Gilded Age roots,

but also the travels of the hotel's owner.

All of the design layers fit together,

and honestly, staying here kind of feels like

entering the wildly designed pied-a-terre

of some wealthy distant globe-trotting relative.

Though we're happy to say,

for all the hotel's originality,

they kept the most important, most classic detail.

Bathrooms come with the deepest sinking tub

for an unmissable post shopping soak.

Oh, and two words, martini cart.

If you allow yourself just one indulgence here,

it has to be the happy hour martini cart

they wheel up to your room,

with the most perfectly poured cocktails,

with all the accoutrements.

It's bliss.

But word of advice,

that should not be in place of the downstairs Portrait Bar,

a moody sexy cocktail lounge that fills up fast

by the trendiest of New Yorkers.

For a complete change of scene,

the legacy lives on on Hawaii's big island,

where the Rosewood Group of Hotels & Resorts

has revived the beloved Kona Village with a fresh twist.

From the 150 hale or bungalows,

to the resort's own outrigger canoe,

which guests can take out for sunrise paddles,

the village pulls in its destination at every opportunity.

Though the historic grounds, black sand beaches

and acres of pools makes it easy to spend all day outdoors,

you definitely will not want to skip at least an afternoon

at the spa Asaya.

It's built right into the lava flow,

and you can actually see Hualalai Volcano

off in the distance.

That breezy indoor/outdoor design carries over

to the rooms too,

where San Francisco based Nicole Hollis

nimbly avoids the easy design tropes of Hawaiian kitsch

by going big on texture.

The bathrooms are ginormous,

with al fresco showers

and loads of stone and black to mirror the lava fields

and black sand beaches visible from the lanai

where you'll wanna park yourself

for long stints in the morning over coffee and after dusk,

staring up at the stars.

The resort has some solid restaurants,

but honestly, there may not be a more perfect vacation bar

anywhere in the world than Shipwreck,

built of an actual old boat

that was owned by the resort's original founder.

The drinks are a lot of fun and honestly fantastic.

Important to note too,

is the resort's dedication to sustainability,

working with cultural advisors on how to preserve

and protect cultural sites at the hotel,

like it's petroglyph field.

It all combines to a resort

that can feel like a perfect homage

to the land's culture and environment,

along the most memorable and tranquil black sand beaches.

And then there's the supremely elegant 1, Place Vendome,

which is hard to miss right above the Chopard Boutique

in Paris's first arrondissement.

They do things a little differently here.

There is no check-in in the lobby,

but what you will find is signature Parisian glamour,

with an exquisite stone staircase.

Staying here feels like you've foregone a standard hotel

in favor of your own private member's club,

which in a way it is.

No non guests are allowed through these hallowed doors.

There are just five rooms and 10 suites

in the entire property,

all of which have been masterfully created

by famed interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon.

Each has its own personality and aesthetic point of view.

Some are done in stark whites and cobalt blues,

others have pop art style curvaceous chairs,

mosaic showers and embroidered wallpaper.

This singular approach to design helps remind us

that this is a more personalized approach

to what a hotel can be.

And then there's the cuisine,

masterfully prepared

by luxury hospitality vet Boris Algarra.

From the high tech kitchen,

he and his team craft dishes

as beautiful as the setting itself,

including a 24/7 breakfast menu

that are plated so beautifully

you kind of don't wanna ruin it

by taking that first bite.

Also, there may be nothing more luxurious

than settling into the property's gigantic hug-like sofas

with the most perfect coffee or tea,

or upgrading that to a glass of red

from the owner's own vineyard.

A top hotel draws in the best of food, design and comfort

to become a destination all their own.

Any hotel that you choose will guarantee a great vacation.

And for more information on all these hotels,

including what to pack, head to cntraveler.com.

These hot list tours are brought to you by Capital One.

Reggie Bush Got Heisman Back After Chance Encounter W/ Attorney At Gronk Pool Party

Gisele bündchen seems to break down in tears after traffic ticket, gisele bündchen pulled over by cop, ticketed ... seems to shed some tears.

Gisele Bündchen 's day started out rough -- a cop pulled her over in Florida, and she seemed pretty upset over it all ... especially when he handed her a ticket.

Check out this video ... you see a Surfside PD officer pulling over a Mercedes G-Wagon, and not just any G-Wagon ... but Gisele's, one that she's been spotted driving a lot recently. Anyway, you can eventually see Gisele inside ... and she looks awfully emotional.

While it seems like a routine traffic stop ... Gisele hands the officer some documents and he heads back to his squad car to run the info -- a pretty standard situation, no real big deal.

However, it appears the stress of the stop might have gotten to GB ... 'cause when the cop comes back and hands her a ticket, she's overcome with emotion -- straight-up bawling and wiping at her face. The guy doesn't really care ... he just goes through the motions.

She also seems to be aware she's in public ... turning her face away from the passing cars and onlookers and pulling her visor down to cover her eyes -- but it's obvious she's upset.

Unclear exactly when this happened Wednesday ... but, we do know Gisele spent some time with Joaquim Valente today too -- reportedly checking on the renovations happening at her Miami-area home in pictures published by The Daily Mail .

Hard to tell if he's in the car with her -- but it's certainly possible. Gisele and Joaquim have been tied at the hip since going public with their relationship ... post- Tom Brady , of course.

Here's hoping she can dust herself off ... tickets are a dime a dozen. Nothing to cry about!

Putin taunts the West with 'first ever' visit to remote ice-covered 'frontier region' just 55 miles from the US - as Zelensky tries to drum up war support in Lithuania

  • Chukotka is Russia's easternmost region, sharing a maritime border with Alaska

President Vladimir Putin  has arrived for his first-ever presidential visit to Chukotka in Russia 's Far East - just 55 miles from the US state of Alaska .

Putin arrived in Anadyr, the local capital of the Chukotka region this morning after flying from Moscow some nine time zones away.

Chukotka is the easternmost region of Russia, with a maritime border on the Bering Strait with Alaska.

The Russian president was met in Anadyr by a motorcade and was whisked away in a limousine amid frigid temperatures of -28C.

It's the closest he has come to US soil since he met with President  Barack Obama in New York City in 2015.

Chukotka is so close to Alaska that Roman Abramovich - the ex-Chelsea FC owner - was reported to fly to Anchorage in Alaska for lunch when he was the governor of the region from 2001 - 2008.

Putin's visit comes at a time when US-Russian relations are at their lowest ebb in decades amid the war in Ukraine and a growing East-West divide.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky today landed in Lithuania as part of an unannounced trip to the Baltic states to drum up more support for the conflict.

Global war for control of the ARCTIC: Climate change is unlocking untapped natural resources, new trade routes... and a new international conflict that RUSSIA is already winning

The three Baltic states - all former Soviet republics which are now EU and NATO members - are among Ukraine's staunchest allies.

'Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania are our reliable friends and principled partners. Today, I arrived in Vilnius before going to Tallinn and Riga,' Zelensky said on social media platform X, formerly Twitter.

'Security, EU and NATO integration, cooperation on electronic warfare and drones, and further coordination of European support are all on the agenda,' he said.

The Baltic tour marks Zelensky's first official trip abroad this year.

In Lithuania, a key donor to Ukraine, Zelensky said he will hold talks with the president, prime minister and the speaker of parliament, and meet with the Ukrainian community.

The visit comes as other Kyiv allies waver on fresh aid, nearly two years into Russia's invasion.

Ukraine has come under intense Russian shelling in recent weeks, retaliating with strikes on Russia's border city of Belgorod.

Zelensky has urged allies to keep military support flowing and held in-person talks with officials from the United States, Germany and Norway last month.

But an EU aid package worth 50 billion euros ($55 billion) has been stuck in Brussels following a veto by Hungary, while the US Congress remains divided on sending additional aid to Ukraine.

Following his trip to Chukotka, Putin is expected to visit several regions in the Russian Far East to boost his re-election campaign amid the war with Ukraine, which has seen more than 300,000 Russians killed or maimed.

He is due to stand in March, seeking another six years in the Kremlin.

The only Kremlin leader ever to travel to Chukotka previously was Dmitry Medvedev in 2008.

Putin's trip sees him escape a wave of ugly protests in western Russia over hundreds of thousands of people scraping by in freezing conditions due to breakdowns in communal heating supplies.

In Elektrostal, Moscow region, desperate residents say they have had no communal heating - which Russians routinely expect the state to supply usually through piped hot water - for the entire winter so far.

'We have been without heating since [9 October],' one resident said in a video circulating on Telegram.

'It is impossible to be in our homes… We are freezing! We are freezing! We are freezing!' they said.

Top 5 airlines flying to Kailua-Kona

It was a full flight without any issues or stress. Really surprised with how so many flights seem to have issues nowadays.

My flight went off without any hitch or issue. I anticipate issues every time I fly, luckily, I was wrong on this trip.

I was seated at the back of the plane and the flight attendants were fantastic. I did not get food so can’t say. Thought the movie selection was lean.

Flight was good. Glad it was delayed or I may have missed the connection since I got to Seattle at about the same time my connection was to leave. The snack was a small bag of pretzels and a small soda. Can’t really call that food. There was no entertainment available on the flight.

It was much better than expected. Short flight and smaller plane so no entertainment or food.

It was so easy to board using my boarding pass on my iPhone, and I liked what I was given on the plane for food and drink, and everyone was very friendly.

It took around two hours to depart. Just sitting in the tamarack waiting. It impacted my traveling plans in a very dramatic way. When we returned, it took around two hours for us to be able to get our luggage. Ridiculous!!

The messaging about the change in flight destination and options for getting to SFO was poor. There should have been frequent updates. When I spoke to the boarding agent moment before we were supposed to board, he was flippant and offered no help before the announcement was made that transportation would be arranged. It was as poor of an experience that I've ever had.

I thought every thing was good with the acceptation of the long layover between Seattle and the Tampa trip.

My plane ride down landed 20 min late. Boarding at SFO was strange too. The people at the terminal were nice—but, boarding lacked direction, and was confusing . Coming back was worse—the plane was hours behind—and I barely caught the last Bart train back to San Francisco (3 min more and I would have been in trouble). It was a very stressful trip, and it didn’t need to be.

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

Our flight was delayed in Atlanta. The staff could have gave us an explanation for the delay and how long it would be.

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. They did a fine job. Can't wait to use Delta in the future.

There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.

Had a broken tray in business class. Crew just shrugged it off.

This flight was delayed approximately 4 hours due to bad weather in HNL.

Flight delayed then cancelled then gate changed two times then baggage lost.

The plane is extremely loud and there’s no place to charge devices.

Not great to be very honest. Our flight was delayed after we sat at the airport until 15 minutes after we were supposed to leave . We were then notified the plane was being worked on “and the parts were out in the ground and still not finished .” Even though the work started the evening before and they knew it wasn’t fixed. . Then we were told it would be a 1:15 pm boarding time so we waited then at 1:45pm we were told it would be an 11:15pm boarding . It was changed to and 3:55am boarding the next morning . We lost out on a day in Hawaii and a night of our VRBO rental.

Safety record impeccable and important since flying many hours and thousands of miles over ocean.

Love the food service and attentiveness of the crew. Could have wi-if on flight

Seats on second leg from Hawaii to Tokyo would not recline. 9 hrs is long in total upright position.

Apparently the computer systems were down, so I wasn’t able to check in 24 hours in advance, despite multiple times on the app, the website, and by calling. Then I arrived at the airport and wasn’t assigned a seat right away. I had to wait until I was at the gate and waited about another hour for an agent. She was nice to give me a “free upgrade.“.

The crew worked to help us find standby seats and we were able to arrive at our destination early which was great. Only drawback is airport at Kona which is in need of update - waiting at gate passengers exposed to jet fumes, there’s only one restaurant with minimal choices, etc

Increased effort to keep family members (purchasing multiple tickets in the same transaction) sitting together. Additionally, when faced with choosing seats at the automated check-in kiosk, only exit row seats charging an additional $9 were available, but if you decline to choose seats, it picks seats that are NOT exit row. How does that work, Hawaiian?

Due to one crew member not showing up to work, our flight was significantly delayed causing us to miss our connecting flight in Houston to Mississippi causing us to be delayed by more than 6 hours and missing our event all together. Very disappointing. All because ONE crew member called in sick. United did grant us a $15 meal voucher, which was a small but appreciated concession that I wasn’t able to use because I ordered my lunch and paid for it before applying the concession, and the staff said it was too late to use it. Ugh! We also had a TWO delay coming back from Mississippi, but that was on American Airlines and it was due to weather, so not their fault. Anyway, not at all impressed with United’s handling of our flight and the HUGE disappointment of missing our important family event for our 90 year old mother. All that money and all that stress and emotions for nothing. Having to wait the hour to bring an employee from LAX seemed like something that should not have happened. Why don’t you have a local back-up? Santa Ana is not a little airport in a rural area.

Flight delayed from Cape Town to Washington then got diverted to miami and in miami we had to fend for ourselves , im still trying to get to Shreveport now

delay several times and wait extra long to board. no entertainment service because there are problem for some rows. always encounter some delays for the last flight of the day.

I just wrote a text which was supposed to be for the flight from Denver to spokane not Frankfurt to Denver.

On time every leg of the journey and exceptional staff at counter, gate, and on board. I haven’t travelled in US for a long time and was genuinely surprised how pleasant this was.

The delays (5 hrs) were a comedy of errors, and the multiple safety issues encountered were very concerning.

flight delays, staff only communicating when pushed, food service lasting a grand total of 7 minutes, stuck in seat from 45mins into flight until landing

Crew was great and did their best to make us comfortable and captain came out at the beginning to announce why the flight was delayed, weather situation up ahead, and kept us updated throughout the flight.

they made me check my carryon. There was space in the overhead bins.

Nice flight, nice crew but no cookie or napkin with my seltzer.

This flight is frequently delayed. The connections seemingly are more frequently delayed. I’ve missed connections as a result twice on the same route to charlotte then Charleston. Final destination arrival has been the next day, twice in a row. No pilots, no crew. Too many excuses. Unfortunately, my days with American are over.

Entertainment was okay not because anything was wrong but it is a short flight so having no wifi is annoying but understandable. Crew was outstanding as usual

Those seats were way too narrow. I had the middle seat, one person was a very skinny person and we still couldn’t avoid touching each other anytime one of us moved. The other person was larger and we were basically sitting in each others lap the entire flight. There was zero entertainment. The flight was long enough to justify tvs, but no. Gotta sit there in your infant seat and twiddle your thumbs.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

Missed the flight because of them and up geting a rental car

Delayd flight out of atl as always miss my conection in dfw no flight untill next day

He began the day under pressure to stamp his authority at the looming prospect of the SNP's government partners, the Greens, walking away in a row over ditched climate targets and growing scepticism of the Cass report on gender identity services for children.

The SNP leader and Scotland's first minister wanted to reset the narrative, to show he is in control.

He hauled Green ministers in for an 8am appointment, which I understand was very tense.

They were sacked on the spot.

In a hastily arranged news conference, Mr Yousaf told me I was wrong to suggest he is not really pulling the strings.

Let's remember he had hailed the SNP-Green alliance as "worth its weight in gold" fewer than 48 hours earlier.

Whatever his early morning intentions, it is not unreasonable to suggest it has spectacularly backfired.

Today's rail plan by Labour is a landmark moment.

Unlike many aspects of the party's policy offers to date, it is detailed, comes with a blueprint for what will happen on day one, and Whitehall will understand how to implement it.

It is, after all, winding back the clock.

Even the rail companies themselves say change to the train network is needed - though they inevitably don't like this version of their future - and it is not without controversy.

But the row is a fight Labour want to have.

After months of a pro-business love-in from Rachel Reeves and the Labour leadership, it is the single most concrete measure worrying business so far, according to figures from FTSE 100 firms I talked to this week.

They are watching closely to see whether the tendency to squeeze and bash business, evident under ex-leader Jeremy Corbyn, remains in the party's DNA, even if it is well hidden.

Sir Keir Starmer's plan allows the railway companies to come back into public ownership within five years.

But will it leave the railways better off?

The battle for a town that no one there wants.

Sky News is reporting from Grimsby in the run-up to the general election as one of its Target Towns - a key constituency prized by both Conservatives and Labour - Great Grimsby and Cleethorpes.

But it turns out that Grimsby doesn't really want them.

It hasn't always been a town doused in apathy. In 2016, 70% of people here voted to leave the EU - one of the highest results in the country - and in the 2019 election, the constituency turned Tory for the first time since the Second World War.

But five years on, polling by Sky News found that since then, the number of people saying they "almost never" trust the British government to place the needs of the nation above the interests of their own party has nearly doubled - from 26% to 49%.

It's a stark but bleak view. Voters tonight described both leaders as uninspiring and uninteresting.

When asked what they make of the current prime minister, words like 'weak' and 'performative' were used. Voters couldn't make their minds up about the Labour leader, saying they were unsure about him or his policies.

The lack of a clear dividing line between the two parties could be a problem in the general election, especially as both parties have been trying to show a bit more leg this week ahead of a fully-fledged election campaign.

Labour has shown a hint of more radical policies today, with their announcement on aiming to nationalise railways within five years. But have they waited a bit too long to impress the people of Grimsby?

The Conservatives ratified their Rwanda policy into law today, but voters here weren't hugely enthused by that either, with one member of the audience tonight proclaiming they care much more about housing and the environment. They asked - why is the centre of political debate about Rwanda and a policy we don't really care about?

Apathy might override this election.

Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf will not resign tomorrow, Sky News understands.

A source close to Mr Yousaf told Sky News's Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies he will not resign tomorrow, despite the speculation.

They said: "He is not resigning and is coming out fighting".

Mr Gillies said it was "unclear though whether a speech on independence will go ahead as planned on Friday."

Mr Yousaf is facing a political crisis after the Scottish Greens said they would vote against him in a motion of no confidence.

The first minister had decided to bring the power-sharing deal between his party the SNP and the Scottish Greens to an end this morning, sparking the dramatic row.

The power-sharing deal between the SNP and Scottish Greens was "a useless deal," former first minister Alex Salmond has said.

Humza Yousaf's future hangs in the balance after the Scottish Greens said they would vote against him in a motion of no confidence.

The dramatic fallout was sparked by the first minister's decision to bring the power-sharing deal to an end this morning.

"The agreement had to go," Mr Salmond told Sky News. "But the way that Humza has done it, he's painted himself into an incredibly tight corner.

"It would be fair to say that his first ministership is hanging by a thread."

Mr Salmond, leader of the Alba Party, said the balance of power hangs with Ash Regan, former SNP leadership candidate and Alba Party MSP.

"The Alba Party will write him [Mr Yousaf] a letter setting out our concerns and priorities for the parliament, and Humza's future will depend on his response to that letter," he said.

"If he wants to remain as first minister, then he better give a response which is convincing not just to Ash Regan, but to the Scottish people."

Another Tory leadership contest would be a "catastrophically bad idea," James Cleverly has said, as he warned Conservative MPs thinking of submitting no-confidence letters in Rishi Sunak not to "jump out of an aeroplane" without a parachute.

The prime minister has insisted he intends to call a general election in the second half of the year - but there has been speculation he could call one sooner to thwart a possible Tory leadership battle.

Asked for his message to wavering colleagues, Mr Cleverly told reporters: "If you're going to jump out of an aeroplane, please make sure you've got a parachute before you leave the aeroplane. And don't say 'no, we'll work that out on the way down'.

"I think those people who think that another leadership campaign, as truncated as it might be between now and the election, is anything other than a catastrophically bad idea - I don't get it."

Mr Cleverly said Mr Sunak inherited a "really difficult situation" because of COVID and the Ukraine war.

He conceded the "disruption" at the end of 2022, when Liz Truss was prime minister for 49 days, was "a disruption of our own making".

June gives me a wry smile when I ask her if she trusts politicians. But it soon fades.

"They promise you the Earth, and you don't see anything. And it's soul destroying," she says.

I meet her and husband Joe as they tuck into fish and chips in the town's oldest chippy, the Peabung, which has served this town since 1883.

June tells me she really wants to trust politicians but they "just mess it up every time". I ask Joe if he thinks politicians care about him? "Well hopefully they do. I'm not sure really."

He stops to think for a moment. "I don't really trust politicians," he says.

The findings of a Sky News/YouGov poll are stark and echo how voters like June and Joe feel. The findings suggest voters no longer believe what politicians say.

In some places, there appears to be a deep loss of faith in British politics.

Shannon Donnelly has nearly 200,000 followers on TikTok and has used the platform to develop her Grimsby-based business selling personal safety equipment, such as panic alarms. I ask her if she trusts politicians.

"No - I think things like Brexit has massively changed people's opinion. I won't forget when they said all that money would go to the NHS.

"Now we seem to be in a worse position, but they still expect us to trust them. It's crazy."

Read more here:

The polling was really stark - a collapse in trust in politicians and any faith that they're in it for the right reasons.

In Grimsby, we got an audience together of around 20 to 25 people who are engaged, they care about politics, but they just didn't feel as though they've got anyone to vote for, there's no one that is exciting them at the next election.

So we got them to put their points to the two main candidates for the seat, the Conservative MP Lia Nici and the former Labour MP who wants it back this time around, Melanie Onn.

I think what I found was that people are desperate for a reason to vote for someone.

So whether that is improving the town centre, whether that is doing action on immigration or the economy, they want to vote but they're just not that convinced by the main parties right now.

The person who stood out for me the most tonight was a girl called Sarah, she's 26, she lives with her mum and dad, and she admitted that if she had the chance, she'd leave Grimsby.

She was really echoing that point that the further you get away from London, the more distrustful you are of politicians.

Grimsby is certainly somewhere that we are going to be returning to in the months ahead of the all-important general election.

With a general election looming, what counts as gains and losses for the main parties in next week's locals?
