Music has the power to transport us, change our moods, and conjure memories. And, for many travelers, music is closely linked to travel. It can helps us understand the people and culture of a place, break down language barriers, and sear certain moments into our memories forever.

With help from members of our Travel Community and Going staff, we've created the ultimate travel playlist of 100 travel songs. Some reference specific places, others showcase the musical talent of a specific country, and others simply celebrate the joy of exploration.

Here, in no particular order, are 100 of our favorite travel songs.

56 songs that reference specific places in the title or lyrics

Sure, some of these songs, such Paris by the Chainsmokers or Toto’s Africa , actually have little to do with the specific place; it’s just used as the title or the setting for the story. But others not only reference a country or city, they also evoke a specific sense of that particular place or tell a story about that destination.

For example, in Marrakech Express , Crosby, Stills & Nash recount scenes from a train ride Nash actually took in 1966. In London Calling , the Clash sing about the social issues facing London in the late 70s. In Walking in Memphis , Marc Cohn croons about his experience wandering the city. And Simon & Garfunkel's America was inspired by a road trip that Paul Simon took with his girlfriend.

‘This is Our Time': Expo 2020 Dubai releases official anthem featuring Hussain Al Jassmi

Generations of Arab musical talent have banded together for Expo 2020 Dubai ’s official anthem.

Released on Tuesday, This Is Our Time has veteran pop star Hussain Al Jassmi joining fellow Emirati and rising talent Almas and Lebanese singer Mayssa Karaa for an uplifting ode to the event, which begins on October 1.

Produced by Canadian Grammy Award winner Greg Wells, who was behind the 2019 Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi official song Right Where I Am Supposed To Be, the Expo's anthem is a lush and dramatic number that attempts to capture the multicultural flavour of the event.

The track begins with Khaleeji percussion before making way for a steady dance beat in which synths and Middle Eastern strings intertwine.

A message of unity

The three singers perform two verses in English and Arabic each.

Written by singer-songwriter Saif Fadhel, the lyrics support Expo 2020's unifying message.

"Follow me, one voice, one family / The world as it stands, in the palm of our hands, it’s our time," Al Jassmi croons in a rare English verse.

Soul singer Almas follows up with: "Take a seat to the greatest show you’ll ever see / We’ve come so far but the future is ours to decide what we need.”

The accompanying music video is similarly lavish, featuring panoramic shots of the Expo site and various landscapes of Dubai.

The song's inspirational message is visually represented via scenes of an Emirati female astronaut preparing to launch into space. This comes on the back of the recent announcement that Emirati Nora Al Matrooshi , 28, will be the Arab world's first female astronaut.

Images of the spacewalk are juxtaposed with scenes of the singers performing at a glittering outdoor stage and various acrobatic routines.

A song for our times

Al Jassmi describes This Is Our Time as “a tribute” to the UAE.

“It’s a song about pride, faith and unity, and I hope that it brings a smile to the faces of everyone who hears it, wherever they may be in the world,” he says.

“Being a part of such an iconic event in the UAE’s history is extremely exciting and rewarding.”

Karaa, who is Berklee Abu Dhabi's artistic director and will be performing at the Expo's opening night concert , says the song aims to inspire people to dream big.

“Expo 2020 is a significant moment for the entire Arab world and for Arabs around the rest of the world," she says.

"Through this song, I hope we can inspire people of all ages and from all walks of life to follow their dreams – the possibilities are endless.”
