Vampire Weekend announces North American tour, shares new music ahead of upcoming album
It's a new day for Vampire Weekend .
The beloved indie rock band is back with new music, a 39-date North American tour and a new album, "Only God Was Above Us," set for release April 5 after a half-decade away.
The new album, announced last week, is the follow-up to the band's 2019 album "Father of the Bride." Their last album topped the Billboard Hot 100 and garnered 2020 Grammy nominations for album of the year and a win for best alternative rock album, while the record's lead single "Harmony Hall" scored a nod for best rock song.
The three-person band features lead singer Ezra Koenig, bassist Chris Baio and drummer Chris Tomson. Vampire Weekend released a pair of new singles, “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops,” to support the new album.
This Vampire Weekend tour has an interesting twist. The two-time Grammy winners will headline Saturday night shows at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, California, KettleHouse Amphitheater in Bonner, Montana and New York’s famed Madison Square Garden. Then, they'll wake up and do it again the next day on Sunday morning.
"Only God Was Above Us" is out April 5 on a series of formats including on streaming services, physical CDs, standard black vinyl records and limited-edition clear vinyl records on the band’s website .

Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig Reflects on 10 Years of Modern Vampires of the City
By Madison Bloom
Ten years ago today, Vampire Weekend released their third album, Modern Vampires of the City . Now, frontman Ezra Koenig is celebrating the milestone on social media. “MVOTC is ten years old. Wild,” Koenig wrote in an Instagram post . He went on to discuss the writing process for many of the album’s songs, including tracks that germinated from snippets of music penned by Rostam Batmanglij.
“I think this is the VW album where Rostam’s composition and production shines through the most,” Koenig wrote, adding, “he deserves special praise and attention for his work here.” He also reflected on collaborations with producer Ariel Rechtshaid, engineer Emily Lazar, and others. Find his full statement below.
Vampire Weekend released their most recent studio LP, Father of the Bride , back in 2019—six years after issuing Modern Vampires of the City . Father of the Bride went on to win the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album . The band has since shared bonus tracks from the record, as well as EP featuring reinterpretations of the song “ 2021 .”
In December of 2021, Koenig guested on an episode of Mark Hoppus’ After School Radio on Apple Music Hits. During the interview, Koenig discussed Vampire Weekend’s forthcoming fifth album. “It is crazy that it’s been three years,” Koenig said, referring to Father of the Bride .
He added: “We’ve been working on music and, yeah, we were just recording in England for a while, now back in L.A., working with everybody, and, yeah, I mean, I think we’re… I’m always hesitant to…. Sometimes I oversell how close we are with the record because who really knows? But we almost have an album’s worth of songs.”
Ezra Koenig:
MVOTC is ten years old. Wild. Good occasion to slam a Dunkin Donuts iced coffee and reflect: Rostam and I spent about a year writing and recording this album before we moved into the final phase with Ariel. It was far and away our most “studio album.” MVOTC didn’t have songs like A-Punk or Cousins which began as riffs and started to come to life in the practice room. This is an album of more deliberate composition and detailed, patient recording. About half the songs started with something I’d written (Hannah Hunt, Finger Back and Step had been kicking around as concepts for a few years) and the other half all began with a piece of music from Rostam, often with drums, bass and everything sketched out. I remember when he played me the beat for “Don’t Lie” for the first time. That drum pattern and descending chord progression on the organ moved me deeply. I started singing the vocal melody almost immediately. I similarly remember hearing his first instrumental of what became the heart of “Diane Young.” That music was exciting and it took me a long time to write lyrics that I thought were worthy of it. I think this is the VW album where Rostam’s composition and production shines through the most and he deserves special praise and attention for his work here. His opening strings on Everlasting Arms are a favorite moment of mine…or the penny whistle melody on Unbelievers…or the explosive drum beat on Finger Back. All amazing work on his part. These moments and many more are why this album still means something to people ten years later. In the final phase, Ariel helped us break through some of the emotional and musical blocks that made finishing the record so challenging. He also helped us discover recording to tape for the first time, giving the album a unique sound in our catalog and providing a great atmosphere when CT and Baio came in to help bring the drum and bass parts to life with their performances. Shout-out Emily Lazar who mastered it and mixed Unbelievers. Plus the team at XL. Imran, Richard, Ben and Kris (who took a formative walk on the West Side Highway with me.) Steve Buscemi rules. Thanks for listening! -Ezra

Vampire Weekend plans 39-date tour, including Milwaukee concert at BMO Pavilion; new album due in April
Acclaimed indie rock band Vampire Weekend will hit the road this summer behind the group's latest album — "Only God Was Above Us," out April 5.
The 39-date North American trek includes a Milwaukee stop at the BMO Pavilion on Aug. 1.
The band's last Milwaukee concert at that same venue in 2019 displayed a dramatic improvement in the group's live chops, with a more expansive backing band and some Grateful Dead-inspired jams. It placed fourth on the Journal Sentinel's list of the best concerts of 2019 — despite frontman Ezra Koenig at one point mistakenly calling Milwaukee "Minneapolis."
Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Feb. 23 at the box office (200 N. Harbor Drive) and bmopavilion.com , with presales beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Prices have yet to be announced.
Muna also booked for BMO Pavilion Summerfest show
This is the second BMO Pavilion show announced this week. Taylor Swift-endorsed indie-pop trio Muna announced a Summerfest headlining show at the stage on June 27, the fifth announced for that stage during the Big Gig. The others: Brittany Howard with The War & Treaty (June 20), REO Speedwagon (June 28), Mt. Joy (July 4) and Ivan Cornejo (July 6).
Reserved seats for the Muna show go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at the box office and summerfest.com , and will include Summerfest general admission on June 27. Additional seating will be available for Summerfest general admission ticketholders on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ezra Koenig Took a Raga Singing Lesson for Vampire Weekend’s Next Album
As LCD Soundsystem once prophesied , the hot New York bands have now traded their guitars and bought … sitars? Maybe, anyway, according to new information about Vampire Weekend ’s next album. The band just started a vinyl club for previous live sets, and the first record in the series, Frog on the Bass Drum Vol. 01 , is now out. In a newsletter accompanying its release, drummer Chris Tomson dropped a bomb about what singer Ezra Koenig has been up to. “Ezra took a raga singing lesson with Terry Riley in rural Japan and wrote what he considers to be 7 of his all-time top 10 best songs.” (As for Tomson, he got sober and had kids, while bassist Chris Baio served on a jury “with a renowned actress’ husband.”)
Minimalist, raga-influenced Vampire Weekend wouldn’t entirely be out of left field after the jammy, stoned-out Father of the Bride , but still, tell us you could’ve predicted this one. Tomson continued that being able “to connect, jawbone, and jam” with his bandmates without responsibility reminded him of their formation at Columbia University. “I personally found an immense peace and pleasure from creating with the guys like we had in the Ruggles days,” he wrote. “The vibe was strong.” ( FOTB producer Ariel Rechtshaid has been posting about recording with the band, too.)
And the new album is “close to done,” Tomson added in a P.S., promising news by the end of the year. “I feel like it just might be our best yet,” he wrote. “10 songs, no skips.”

I remember when Trey talked about having a dream about Ezra. Ever since Vampire Weekend started to experiment with extending their jams. I had a shirt that had "Jampire Weekend" on the front but a few washes killed the logo. I'm wondering if anybody could create a higher quality "Jampire Weekend" shirt that won't get destroyed with a few washes.
