Vanderbilt Stadium roared like never before when Whit Taylor’s touchdown pass to Phil Roach gave the Commodores a lead in the fourth quarter of the opening game of the 1981 football season. A record crowd of nearly 40,000 people in attendance for that first game sent up that raucous cheer, perhaps one of the loudest following a major renovation and expansion of the venue.
The cheers drowned out a sigh of relief from high above the field. Watching from the new three-story press box as a guest of then-athletic director Roy Kramer, Ronald Crutcher, BE’67, was happy that Vanderbilt beat Maryland. But as project manager for the renovations that led to rechristening the former Dudley Field, he was mostly relieved that the stadium was ready.
At least until the lead engineer, a usually stoic figure, turned to him amid the celebratory din.
“All the people were standing up, jumping up and down, and the stadium was really alive,” Crutcher recalls. “He looked at me, straight-faced, and said, ‘You know, I didn’t design this place to carry this much jumping and turmoil.’
“I must have turned white.”
The stadium survived the joke and the celebration. It fulfilled its purpose, as had Dudley Field since another group of Vanderbilt alumni helped build the original venue in 1922. Even now, as Vandy United’s $300 million athletics investment campaign upgrades the stadium and enhances the fan experience, the goal is the same as it was a century ago. From concerts to commencements to presidential speeches, and to football games that still define autumn, the stadium remains a place for the Vanderbilt community to come together and celebrate.
Vanderbilt football was born out of a challenge. The university—as new as the nascent sport itself in 1890—didn’t have a football team when the University of Nashville (later Peabody Normal College) challenged its counterpart to a game. As author Andrew McIlwaine Bell recounts in The Origins of Southern College Football, Vanderbilt students met, agreed to accept the challenge and selected Elliott Jones as their captain and de facto coach, in part because he owned a book about football and had once seen it played in Massachusetts.
With the backing of William Dudley, a chemistry professor and president of the Vanderbilt Athletic Association, the Commodores nevertheless routed their local rivals 40-0 in a game played at Sulphur Dell baseball park.
Having committed to competing in the sport, Vanderbilt sought to excel. Soon its teams played home games where the law school now stands, its field also named in honor of Dudley. In 1910, when news reached campus that Vanderbilt played defending national champion Yale to a 0-0 tie in New Haven, Connecticut, students gathered amid the field’s wood bleachers for an impromptu bonfire—after they marched through Nashville in the middle of the night.
By 1922, in an early example of cultivating the conditions for further success, Vanderbilt committed to building a new stadium on vacant land west of the main campus (purchased by the university more than a decade earlier). Reports at the time estimated the cost of the stadium at around $200,000, shared between Vanderbilt and gifts from donors. More recently in Vanderbilt Football: Tales of Commodores Gridiron History, Bill Traughber estimated the figure at $300,000—the equivalent of several million dollars today.
An article in the 1923 yearbook explains that the new venue retained the name Dudley Field because it was deemed “less pretentious and more modest” than Dudley Stadium—aligning with famous venues of the era such as the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field and Harvard University’s Soldiers Field. The team’s former home was then rechristened Curry Field, in honor of former football standout Irby “Rabbit” Curry, a pilot who died in World War I.
The new Dudley Field opened on Oct. 14, 1922, when Vanderbilt tied Michigan in front of a crowd that included Cornelius Vanderbilt IV, great-great grandson of the university namesake. It accommodated 20,000 fans in its horseshoe-shaped bowl, which did not include any seating on the north end. While it featured a smaller capacity than a handful of stadiums in the Northeast, where the sport was most popular, it was the South’s first football-specific stadium.
By 1960, further expansion of the east side of the stadium added several thousand seats. When President John F. Kennedy visited in 1963 in conjunction with Vanderbilt’s 90th anniversary, more than 30,000 fans filled Dudley Field to hear him speak. Unfortunately, despite a 1974 Peach Bowl appearance that coincided with a young assistant named Bill Parcells joining head coach Steve Sloan’s staff, results didn’t always help fill the seats during football season.
While previous efforts had mostly added to the structure built in 1922, the 1981 renovation marked a complete transformation. In just 212 days, between the final home game of the 1980 season and the 1981 home opener against Maryland, workers replaced all the original concrete, raised the existing steel framework 10 feet in a particularly challenging maneuver and constructed the three-story press box on the stadium’s west side.
As Vanderbilt marks the 100th anniversary of Dudley Field this year, construction related to Vandy United will begin to reimagine the north and south end zones of Vanderbilt Stadium. A new century of football will have a new look, far from the first in the stadium’s evolution.

Vanderbilt baseball announces Hawkins Field upgrades, to include increased seating capacity
Vanderbilt baseball will renovate Hawkins Field to include increased seating capacity, new club spaces and private suites and a multi-purpose building in right field, the program announced Wednesday .
The upgrades are part of the Vandy United facilities renovation campaign. Among the enhancements will be a second grandstand level with "opera-style boxes" that will increase seating capacity of 3,700 by more than 10%, according to the program, as well as seating on top of the left-field wall, a new concourse between the infield and outfield seating, an entry atrium and suites on top of the current press box.
The program release did not mention a timeline or cost for the completion of the project. Currently, upgrades are underway on FirstBank Stadium for a new basketball operations building, new locker rooms and upgraded seating. Upgrades have also been announced for the golf and tennis facilities, as well as for McGugin Center, which houses administrative and coach offices.
“Hawkins Field has helped us create an environment that has led to success and growth over the past 20 years,” coach Tim Corbin said in the release. “I’m grateful to Chancellor Diermeier and Vice Chancellor Lee for their leadership in ensuring it remains a place that is special for our student-athletes and supporters. Our team understands that we get to share this space for the time we’re given and then pass it on to future generations. What space we have, we take care of. We’re proud of it. This is our home, and I look forward to seeing it grow.”
Vanderbilt will host the NCAA Nashville Regional at Hawkins Field beginning Friday. The Commodores, the No. 6 national seed, will take on Eastern Illinois at 7 p.m. CT on SEC Network.

For a chilly day these were great. We were much more comfortable than the fans on the other sideline. I could imagine for an early season game that these might be too hot though.

Here is more on how the tournament works:
What is the difference between the Division I baseball tournament and the College World Series?
The NCAA Division I baseball tournament is a 64-team tournament that starts in May. After two rounds of play (which each consist of multiple games), there are just eight teams left. These eight teams then head to Omaha, Neb. for the College World Series. The CWS is the culmination of the DI tournament, where the teams compete in two brackets, with the winners of each meeting in the CWS finals, a best-of-three series to decide the NCAA champion.
When did the College World Series start?
The first-ever NCAA Division I baseball tournament was in 1947, and would barely be recognized as the same tournament nowadays. The 1947 tournament featured just eight teams, which were divided into two four-team, single-elimination brackets. The two winners — California and Yale — then met in a best-of-three final in Kalamazoo, Michigan. California would go undefeated through the inaugural CWS and beat Yale to capture the first title.
How are teams selected for the NCAA Division I baseball tournament?
Since 1954, the NCAA Division I baseball tournament field has been split into two qualifying groups: The automatic berths, and the at-large selections. Since 2014, that in a typical year split sees 31 conference champions receive automatic berths, and 33 teams receive at-large bids, decided by the NCAA Division I Baseball Committee.
Men's College World Series champs since 1947
California defeated Yale in the first-ever Men's College World Series, the first of two played in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Texas put itself on the map as the first back-to-back champions in winning the only MCWS ever played in Wichita, Kansas in 1949. The following season Texas won its second championship, opening Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha.
Here's a complete list of all the College World Series finals in the 73-year history of the event. Ole Miss won the 2022 Men's College World Series in two games over Oklahoma.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

Alabama Baseball Week 11 Rankings Update
It will be a ranked matchup this weekend when the Alabama baseball team travels to Starkville, Miss.
- Author: Will Miller
It was a productive week for the Alabama baseball team, culminating in the Crimson Tide's first road series win in league play. The team is now up to nine SEC wins in 2024 after taking two of three from Ole Miss on the road at Swayze Field.
Alabama (28-16, 9-12 SEC) won the first game of the series 12-0 in run-rule fashion. The Rebels took the encore by a final score of 9-8 last Friday, then fell to the Crimson Tide 10-3 in the rubber game. Freshman left-hander Zane Adams dominated with a line of seven innings and three runs, two of which came in the eighth inning when the game was largely out of doubt. Entering the weekend, Alabama was ranked No. 23 in the D1Baseball poll, and stood pat following a 3-1 week.
Last week's slate also included a midweek win against Samford at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. In that contest, Alabama scored 11 runs in the bottom of the third inning and won 14-5. The Bulldogs escaped the run rule, but the Crimson Tide was able to snap its midweek skid. That's especially promising for the players because the next midweek test is against a Troy team which just swept Coastal Carolina clean out of the D1Baseball rankings.
No. 16 Mississippi State' the Crimson Tide's opponent this coming weekend in Starkville, Miss., entered the poll this week on the strength of a road series win against then-No. 11 Vanderbilt. In 2022, the previous time Alabama traveled to Dudy Noble Field, it was a down-to-the-wire series that took extra innings to decide game one and saw game two end in walk-off fashion. The Crimson Tide only won the third game in that set.
First pitch in this weekend's series is set for 6 p.m. CT on Friday, followed by afternoon games on Saturday (2 p.m. CT) and Sunday (1 p.m. CT). Alabama's series against Ole Miss ran from Thursday through Saturday, but the Crimson Tide has no midweek this week, affording the team a measure of rest as it enters one of the toughest environments in the conference.
