Beds were the most uncomfortable I have had to sleep in. The on board entertainment was poor at best, only one band playing were worth looking at. The vibe and shows were like a pride event on water, which I have nothing against but it didn't really cater for much of a variety. The locations we picked at were boring. The food was abit of hit and miss and the arcade room was very out dated. I was disappointed with the whole experience as it was my first taster of a cruise. I wouldn't recommend virgin voyages unless you are 18 to 30 and into alot of drinking and partying.

Good, but wouldn’t do it again

The cruise ship is very grand, new and the crew is mostly excellent, always working hard and tidying things up. The structure of the cabins is very poor and every time someone leaves the cabin door to close by itself - and I believe possibly for safety reasons the doors bang so strongly - you are most literally jolted forwards as if someone had pushed you. This happened multiple times during day and night so it’s most definitely not a ship to relax and restore. Food in the Galley is average to good and always available. The only restaurant with outstanding food out of three I tried (Razzle Dazzle and Pink Agave) was The Wake, but the server was very causal and loud didn’t fit the space at all, didn’t even hear the hostess asking him to lead us to a table cause he was having a good old chat with someone. She had to come down the stairs and get him even though we were standing right there beside him. Pizza space food was alright, freshly made, loads of options for breakfast in the galley. This cruise tries to cater to both worlds: single and/or party oriented people, and also retired folks/ people who go on cruises for a relaxing travel experience, and I understand they need to pay the bills, but it simply doesn’t work. There is no dedicated quiet spaces, the entertainment is very tacky and pub-like, the music is definitely more pop-nightclub than something more elegant to enjoy the evening and relax. The public on the trip from England to the Netherlands is mostly British chavs that get drunk everywhere and puke in public areas, and this is not Virgin’s fault, but the “partly-like” atmosphere of it definitely plays a role. A lot of the machines at the gym spaces were not connecting to devices or working properly. The furnishing and design of the ship is very well done and high end. I had the cabin with balcony which was nice and spacious too. All in all, if you like partying and don’t mind being jolted awake all night long, its worth a shot.

Awful experience and totally not what expected. Despicable cheap and bizarre entertainment with pole dancers and ppl dressed in leather climbing up a cage! Theme nights again totally odd... adults dancing in the pool, entertainment staff dressed as canaries for retro night and pushing past whilst you were attempting to dance to some awful mixed tunes. Repetitive shows, constant loud music blaring out on decks at all times, no peace except in restaurants which were excellent. Please do not even think of going on virgin cruises unless you aged 18 to 30....!!!

Virgin: a new way of cruising.

With Virgin you are yourself, you can dress and feel who you are without the need for dress codes. Wifi included, drinks (soft drinks, water, tea) included. A high-level entertainment/show team. A technological boat, your room can be controlled from the tablet. Varied food available at all times! A cruise and a shipping company to repeat.

3 cruises plus 3 more booked

I’ve just completed my third cruise with Virgin Voyages, and I already have three more booked! Honestly, I don’t understand where the negative reviews are coming from—it's clear some people are more motivated to share complaints than compliments. In my experience, Virgin Voyages offers an incredible cruise experience, and it's important to make up your own mind rather than rely on the negativity, which might come from passengers who aren't comfortable with the modern technology onboard, like the Virgin app. For me, everything about the cruise was fantastic! The atmosphere onboard is so much fun, and the crew are plentiful, attentive, and friendly, thanks to a generous passenger-to-staff ratio. The food is absolutely delicious, with The Galley offering freshly prepared, tasty options all day. I love the flexibility to order as much as I like at the restaurants, where the quality is top-notch. Plus, the selection of restaurants is amazing, and the best part is that they’re all included in the price. Not only is the food and service great, but Virgin Voyages also offers fantastic value for money. Wi-Fi and gratuities are included in the fare, which is a huge bonus. While drinks are extra, they are well-priced and of great quality. The ships themselves are beautiful and modern. The cabins are super comfortable and quiet, with fantastic showers—no grimy shower curtains here, just sleek glass doors and excellent water pressure. Every detail is thought out to enhance your comfort and relaxation. I genuinely can't wait to set sail again soon with Virgin Voyages. Every cruise has been a memorable, wonderful experience!

Loved Virgin Voyages!!

Loved Virgin Voyages!!! This is theeeeee most inclusive cruise line! Never once did I feel "a certain way" that Celebrity has made me feel. The customer service is UNMATCHED. • The food was amazing. • Loved the entertainment. • Loved the staff. • Loved almost EVERYTHING! What I didn't love... The bed triggered my sciatica. I've been in pain since leaving the ship on 9/22. Horrible bed.

Sailing on Virgin Resilient Lady Sept…

Sailing on Virgin Resilient Lady Sept 2024-09 We sailed a 6 night cruise Portsmouth UK, La Coruna ESP, Bilbao ESP, Le Verdon sur Mer Fr, Sept 2024. The boarding ship was a well organized operation. One to be proud of. Our baggage was waiting for us at our stateroom. The stateroom being a central sea terrace deck 10 was very nice in all respects. The room was sufficiently large, the bathroom was in fact tiny, but the superb design all fixtures had enough room. The balcony was quite adequate and had a fun hammock. The weather made the deck and hammock idle most of the voyage. Deck 10 was as low as I wanted to go for view over the life boats below, so the view was just fine. Also with the rough seas, being lower in the ship, ship rocked side to side less than say deck 14. Waters were beam sea the entire voyage. The meals were hit and miss. The specialty dining booking stars months in advance, we missed out there and had to scramble. A lot of our dining was in the Galley. Most meals were cold, some not delivered, quality just not there. The deserts on the other hand were spectacular. A pastry chef at work there. Other cooking staff obviously not qualified by any recognized culinary institute. Specialty dining was achieved by visiting the maitre d’ and asking for availability. We were able to have 3 dinners and one brunch. The superb Specially dining restaurant food and service came from a different planet than the Galley. The food and service in both Extra Virgin and The Wake were sublime. On the darker side, there was the entertainment. Virgin Cruise Line seems to target the young 20, 30’s something. Shows all seemed to start at 10 PM and were way too loud or raunchy. The cruise line should do a noise measurement study as some staff have to endure noise in excess of 100db for hours. This person being the Maitre d’ at the Wake. In particular there was a husband wife duet from Jamaica, who compensated for their lack of talent buy using excessive volume. This location would have far better served by a cellist or similar non-amplified performer. Performers need to be vetted. Entertainment should be for all. Including the large number of over 60 year old’s. There is a nice spiral stairway that would be perfect for say a soloist performer. The UK has a rich musical heritage, shame it is absent on this ship. ALL STAFF on ship were very friendly and tried to be as helpful as they could, at all times. Apart from second rate food in the Galley and really bad entertainment, I actually did find some enjoyment on this cruise. I do appreciate all the inclusions. And we walked off the ship with a $0.00 balance. Would I cruise on Virgin again? Seems like the longer I wait the less rough the lack of entertainment and hit and mostly miss food in the Galley. Because the ship is price point most likely I would be back. Suggestions for improvement. • Have some entertainment for the plus 60’s crowd, of which there are a lot on your ships. This entertainment could start at 7:00 PM and run to 9:00 PM. Then the young kids could take over. • Hire qualified cooks for the Galley.

Mixed feelings, but overall I had a great time

I have mixed feelings about my recent Mediterranean cruise with VV. This was the first cruise for myself and my husband so I can't compare it to another cruise line. We both enjoyed ourselves and the staff were amazing so we might book again, we'll have to wait and see. Yes, there was a bit of a party atmosphere, but we were both prepared for that and didn't mind - even though we are quieter. I had a balcony room so there was plenty of opportunities to relax there if I wanted to. The ports weren't great (Irresistible Med), apart from Ibiza which we loved, which really surprised us. If we do decide to go again we'll be more careful in what route we choose. My main gripe was that the food did not live up to the hype. We chose VV as our first cruise mainly because the reviews said that the food was really good but in reality it was hit and miss. We did not enjoy Gunbae, the Wake (brunch and dinner), dinner at Razzle Dazzle or most of the food offerings in the Galley. We loved Test Kitchen (menu A only, we were divided in opinion on menu C), Extra Virgin and Pink Agave and brunch at Razzle Dazzle. We also liked the poke bowls from the Sun Club and the pizzas. The coffee was really bad unfortunately, even the paid options, so that put me in a bit of a bad mood. Thankfully we were in the Mediterranean and the Italians and Spanish know how to do coffee well! We enjoyed the desserts in the galley, as well as the pastries, but the ice cream was just ok. Can't really complain much though seeing as it's all included! Entertainment wise it was a bit of a mixed bag, we enjoyed Duel Reality and the Diva was good. Oscar the Charmer was brilliant (we were invited to a "secret show" which was great) and we enjoyed the Lolz Supper Club and the separate comedy show with Gareth Waugh. Ships in the night was a bit confusing, the cast were really talented but the show didn't really make sense to us so I wouldn't see it again. The live music was quite American in style which wasn't our thing, but we did enjoy the Journeyman when he played. We both did a spin class which was ok, but I probably wouldn't do one again. It was really warm in the room and the instructor was difficult to understand. He didn't vary the routine very much on the bike but maybe that's just different from what I'm used to. We also did a bungee class which was great fun, but also a tougher workout than I expected (lots of pushups etc) so bear that in mind if you are planning to do one. Staff were amazing, so helpful and very friendly. I really think they are VV biggest asset and I understand that they are paid well compared to other cruise lines which I think is a smart move. Everyone seemed happy to be working there and it didn't seem fake either. I had seen all the videos of opening the door to the cabin for the first time and the music playing and the curtains opening automatically. We got none of that which was a bit disappointing (I know, first world problems!), in fact the curtains had to be manually pulled each time as both the tablet controls and the switch didn't work. Minor thing really, but it took away from the "luxury" we had been told the cruise would be. All in all, we were happy with our standard sea terrace room. I had researched beforehand so I immediately asked for a mattress topper on the bed and I found the bed very comfortable after that. Bathroom was fine and shower was amazing. Only thing was that they refilled the shower gel after the 2nd day with a cheaper shower gel, not the red flower one that is advertised. The new one was horrible smelling and I would bring my own shower gel if I travel again which does seem a bit ridiculous considering the price these cruises cost. Overall, I am happy with everything despite my disappointment with the food. There were lots of Americans on the boat which I thought we were prepared for but I don't think anything prepares you for the full volume of so many Americans in a confined space :). I don't think this is a cruise for older people, unless you are adventurous and open minded. We met some older couples who were very disappointed but they kept comparing the experience to more traditional cruise lines and even though I have no other experience, I understand that VV is a bit different in this regard. The beer offerings were very poor but we weren't there to drink, so it didn't really matter that much to us, but others we met complained about the lack of proper pubs on board (Irish and UK). We may travel again, but we'd have to wait for a good price as we didn't think the food was as good as advertised for what the current prices are. Also, substituting a cheaper shower gel after 2nd day made me wonder what else they are skimping on... Subsequently, we did not buy a MNVV onboard, we'll wait and let this trip sink in to see if we want to go on another cruise again. If we do decide to go it will be VV again as we like the adults only.

We had a wonderful time on the…

We had a wonderful time on the Resilient Lady. Staff are so friendly, kind and cannot do enough for you. The restaurant staff especially cater for your every need. The room was always clean, a personal hello from the cabin manager, was a nice touch. Always checking if we needed anything. The food was truly incredible, in all venues. We could not fault it! Thank you Virgin Voyages for a great cruise ! We will be back :)

CABIN BAR TAB - POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE

We are now 10 days post voyage, and still had no response from Virgin Voyages customer services. We have an issue with charges being made to cabins when complementary cabin bar tabs were given and also bar tabs purchased before cruising. Upon ringing virgin voyages when we returned home we was only told THEN that we should have gone to Sailor services on board and shared our cabin bar tab with the other person in the cabin! Makes no sense at all if you have CABIN BAR TAB surely it would be for all persons in the CABIN. At no point PRIOR to our voyage were we told by virgin voyages that the bar tab is only for the lead passenger, unless you opt for the lead passenger to foot your bill or go to sailor services on board to share the bar tab with the other person/persons. We had 2 cabins on this cruise and both cabins had unused bar tab, we even bought $1000 bar tab prior to the cruise and left a fair bit behind Both cabins were charged extra!! Cruise was great, but this really has left a sour taste, not only beginning charged extra, but also how long it takes them to get back to you !!

Had the best time time on Resilient…

Had the best time time on Resilient Lady. Beautiful ship. Crew were amazing...every one of them. Food eas something else....delicious. Entertainment was the best. Just a great time. Thank you Virgin Voyages.

Just back from a cruise on Scarlet Lady…

Just back from a cruise on Scarlet Lady we must say how much we enjoyed it the staff were brilliant always very attentive and happy to help Food apart from Razzle Dazzle amazing drinks a little expensive found in our opinion too many bars. Seating around the ship we found quite strange in some areas like the Dock bar couldn't quite work out the wooden chairs like something out of the Flintstones car ??. We also noticed not enough sun beds for everyone people were walking around on sea days with no luck plus on some of the decks a lot of wasted space where extra beds could have been placed. Plus you definitely need to be savvy with your phone as everything you need to book and information is on the app maybe this is an age thing!! But all in all we have had a brilliant time with an excellent itinerary thank you.

Lost luggage and appalling onboard and aftercare.

They lost our luggage for the entire trip through a series of errors and incompetence! We had nothing and to be honest they didn't care. They didn't seem to know how to escalate problems onboard. We were unable to participate in various activities and themed nights and missed shows because of the stress, upset and meetings at sailor services. To top it off it was my husband's birthday on board and his day was ruined! This is a very brief summary of the situation onboard. After finally receiving an email response tonight a week after we were promised a 48 hour phonecall we are disgusted with the reply and have requested escalation of our complaint immediately. Because of the lack of onboard care and diligence and the appalling aftercare I unfortunately wouldn't recommend virgin voyages.

Modern and inclusive cruise experience

Modern and inclusive cruise experience! Our sea terrace cabin on The Scarlet Lady came equipped with a hammock and was bigger than expected. High-quality range of restaurants included without additional fees. Drinks were fairly priced - think London average. All staff were friendly. It was very LGBT friendly with a good mix of nationalities on board. I'd definitely cruise with Virgin again and can see why there were so many on board had been 2 - 3 times before. Lots to do on board and enough space / options re whether you want quiet or lively.

A poorly managed cruise to Brugge

Our recent Brugge cruise did not seem well organised at all. This was probably because it was a one-off sailing rather than a regular voyage and consequentially was at the expense of sailors onboard. The issue was, despite being advertised a "Zeebrugge (Brugge)" cruise, no form of transport was provisioned to go to Brugge, the highlight of the voyage. A previous cruise to Mykonos with Virgin, they had a 24 hour bus to take people from the port to the town. I'm really surprised that for a cruise company wanted to promote all-inclusivity and high service that a detail as big as this was forgotten. Myself, like many others, had to organise individual taxis or tours at our own expense. I'm hoping my two upcoming voyages will be a better experience, but this has made my reconsider how much I want to cruise with Virgin in future.

Cruising with Virgin

virgin cruise ship reviews

The brainchild of British entrepreneur Richard Branson, Virgin Voyages is a hip, adults-only cruise line that aims to be a bit different from the other options on the cruising market. And according to recent cruisers, it succeeds; many rave that a Virgin Voyages sailing is unlike any cruise experience they've had before (in a good way). Virgin Voyages' ships stand out with their superyacht-inspired atmosphere, upscale dining outlets, free Wi-Fi access, design-forward staterooms and wellness activities. There are four ships in the fleet (the newest ship debuts in 2024):  Scarlet Lady ,  Valiant Lady , Resilient Lady and Brilliant Lady (scheduled to debut in 2024). The line sails to a variety of destinations around the globe, including popular spots in the Caribbean, Europe and the South Pacific. Virgin's ships have departed from ports in  Miami ;  San Juan, Puerto Rico ;  Barcelona , Spain;  Athens, Greece ;  Dubai, United Arab Emirates ;  Singapore ;  Melbourne, Australia ; and  Auckland, New Zealand  so far, and Virgin continues to switch up itineraries to sail from destinations around the world. Itineraries typically last anywhere from two to 15 nights.

Cruisers can enjoy numerous amenities on Virgin's ships, including swanky pools with plenty of lounge seating, group workout classes, unique evening performances and more. Meanwhile, foodies will appreciate the ships' 20-plus dining venues and specialty bars, and the fact that sodas, drip coffee and other "essential drinks" are included in the cruise fare. Shore excursion options (called “Shore Things” by the cruise line) range from snorkeling and exploring Mayan ruins in Mexico to cultural tours and beach club relaxation in the  Bahamas  to scenic bike rides and food tastings in  Corfu, Greece . Keep in mind that Virgin Voyages excursions are subject to change based on the time of year, weather, availability and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  One detail to note about Virgin Voyages is the line’s four ships are nearly identical and feature the same layout. This means you can focus on finding a cruise with the dates and itinerary you want without having to compare ships or unique amenities. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Before You Book

  • Note: To see Virgin Voyages' flexible deposit, cancellation and rebooking policies, visit its website .
  • Virgin Voyages requires a deposit of 20% of the cruise fare to confirm a booking. A reservation can be held for 24 hours without a deposit up to 45 days prior to sailing; bookings made within 44 days of the sailing (or less) require full payment at the time of booking.
  • Final payment is due 120 days before the trip departure date.
  • The cancellation policy varies depending on when you decide to cancel your cruise and how much of it you've paid. Depending on the timing, you may be eligible for a full refund of the deposit and any payments, a refund of any payments (but not the deposit) or a future cruise credit. If you cancel 44 days or less before your cruise, you are not eligible for any refund or credit. For more information, see the Cancellation Policies section on the Virgin Voyages terms and conditions page .
  • The cruise line allows only adults ages 18 or older on its cruises.
  • If you are pregnant, you must be less than 24 weeks by the end of the sailing to book a trip with Virgin Voyages.
  • At the time of booking, guests are asked to notify the cruise line of any special requirements or accommodation needed, including wheelchair access and service animal requests. Before You Board

  • Cruisers will need a current passport that's valid for six months past the end of the voyage date.
  • Check-in for Virgin Voyages cruises takes place entirely on the line's mobile app. This means you don’t have to print cruise tickets or bring other printed documentation along.
  • Boarding is typically around 2 p.m. and disembarkation times vary by cruise. Virgin Voyages instructs travelers to refer to their booking confirmation for additional information on timing and notes the departure time listed means the exact time the ship leaves the dock, so cruisers should plan accordingly to arrive well in advance.
  • There are no specific luggage restrictions, but Virgin recommends limiting the number of bags you bring on board. If you are arriving at your departure destination by plane, be sure to consult airline luggage policies before your trip.
  • Cruisers can book shore excursions – which Virgin calls "Shore Things" – in the Sailor App at least 120 days prior to sailing. Travelers booked in RockStar Quarters will be able to book shore excursions 135 days ahead of sailing. Payment is due at the time of booking.
  • Passengers can secure dining reservations and entertainment starting 45 days before departure through the Sailor App or via a travel agent. Those booked in higher-level accommodations (Mega RockStar and RockStar Quarters) receive early access to reservations: 60 days prior to departure. Reservations for spa and wellness experiences can only be made on board.

Disclaimers about ship ratings: A ship’s Health Rating is based on vessel inspection scores published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If a ship did not receive a CDC score within 22 months prior to the calculation of its Overall Rating, its Health Rating appears as N/A; in such a case, the ship’s Overall Rating is calculated using the average Health Rating of all CDC-rated ships within the cruise line. All ship Traveler Ratings are based on ratings provided under license by Cruiseline.com.

Virgin Voyages launched a cruise designed for Gen Z - here's one 25-year-old's verdict

Making waves with its very direct approach to onboarding the next generation of cruisers, Virgin Voyages has finally launched its first of four ships in the US earlier this month.

As someone squarely in their target demo, a novice cruiser under the age of 25, I accepted Virgin Voyages' invitation to be among the first to check out the new Scarlet Lady. The cruise was one of their new standard routes, four nights from Miami to Nassau and Bimini Beach in the Bahamas ; markedly different from the standard 7-10 night Caribbean trips you'll find on other cruise lines.

What I found onboard was surprising and gave me definitive answers to the questions many travelers are pondering: Can Virgin Voyages actually bridge the generation gap and be considered cool?

Who is sailing on Virgin Voyages?

18+ and fully vaccinated? Welcome aboard! Virgin Voyages adults-only scene changes up the attitude and energy of everyone onboard, giving the whole experience an exclusive, club vibe. The ship doesn't lack for anything you'd find on your standard cruise, with plenty of uniquely themed bars (a dozen to be exact), two pools, plenty of hot tubs and a nightclub as cool as any I've seen on more solid ground. The guests on my sailing were from all walks of life and notably younger.

The sea terrace cabins included a hammock on each balcony..jpg

Will I have to wear a mask on board?

It's really up to you regarding masks on board as masks are recommended but not required. Walking around the ship, you'd see about one in every 50 people onboard wore masks and all the staff is masked at all times. Though with a sweeping vaccine mandate for all passengers and crew as well as thorough testing prior to boarding from every port, Virgin is hoping to significantly reduce the risk of onboard outbreaks. At this point, a full vaccine mandate is not possible on cruises that include children, which makes Virgin Voyages among the safest travel experiences you can have now.

The new, affordable spring break destination

As soon as the Scarlet Lady departs US waters the drinking age becomes 18 and the ship is ready to party. The pricing for this cruise line is done a bit differently, charging for cabins that have the capacity for up to 3 passengers (or 'sailors' as the line refers to its passengers). With rates that hover around $1,300 per cabin for 4-5 night trips, Virgin is poised to become the perfect upscale yet affordable vacation for a friends group looking to experience some new destinations.

The sea terrace cabin in “sleep” mode.jpg

What are the cabins like? Will I feel comfortable?

For my stay, I was booked in the Sea Terrace cabin, which is their standard balcony cabin. Although the bathroom was a little small, I appreciated the extra space in the stylish room. The cabin is high-tech and low-touch with a tablet that centralizes all the controls in the room including the lights, AC, the TV and the window shades. The mood of the cabin changes with a quick swipe as lighting presets add a playful touch with one designed for social media photoshoots and another for hangovers, maybe the most useful feature I found on this party ship.

My favorite cabin feature? The red hammock on the terrace, perfect for lounging, watching the sea roll by.

Will I be able to post easily on Instagram while onboard?

Given that the ship was basically built for social media, Virgin was smart to make WiFi available and free to all guests. Premium and higher-speed WiFi packages are also available for a fee. The highest speed available is $40 for the whole voyage if purchased on the first day. While your social media channels will load perfectly with the free package, and posting is a breeze, working may be a challenge. Most video call services are either blocked by the cruise line or use up too much bandwidth to work as they would on land. Hopefully, you’re not working on vacation, but if you need to make that one important client video call, you may be in trouble.

Pink Agave restaurant on Virgin Voyages.jpg

What's the food like?

Virgin really excels at atmosphere and the dining experiences at the all-inclusive onboard restaurants are distinct, unique and sexy. Favorites included the fresh Mexican fare at Pink Agave, and Gunbae, a Korean BBQ experience where you’re able to cook some of your own food. Each restaurant also features “Treat Yourself” options for an additional charge, think lobster, steak and oysters. The included food options, however, never left me wanting more.

Will I have to bring my wallet around the ship to tip?

There’s no need to tip when you go out to dinner or drinks onboard or at their private beach club (more on that later). This means even when you purchase an alcoholic beverage, you won’t need to add an extra tip and it won’t be automatically added to your account, as it would be on other cruise lines. I wanted to see what would happen if I tried to give my bartender a cash tip one night and they declined to take it. Use your discretion here.

View from Virgin Voyages’ private beach club at Bimini, Bahamas.jpg

The Beach Club at Bimini: the line's private island oasis

Expect classy, Vegas pool party vibes at Virgin Voyages' exclusive The Beach Club at Bimini, a destination on most of its voyages. The emphasis here is on fun, not necessarily relaxing. The music is loud, drinks are prominent and the free WiFi around the pool ensures easy access to social media. The music is great and goes beyond standard Top 40 hits and Caribbean beats. Plan to stay later into the night for the sunset bonfire, the perfect way to toast a day in paradise.

Yes, you really can get a tattoo on the ship

That's right, they have a tattoo parlor onboard, Squid Ink, and it's real. Be sure to book ahead as the first and only chance to get your ink at sea fills up fast.

The shows are actually fun

Every live performance I saw was fun and fully immersive. With at least one live performance nightly in the ship’s theater, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to catch them all.

The highlight for me was the ship's “Untitled Dance Party Show Thing”. The one-of-a-kind variety show makes the audience the spectacle as the space transforms into a dance club. The young crowd went wild for it and so did I; it may be one of the best live performances I’ve ever seen.

You can take several workout classes on board, including spin..jpg

What's the overall vibe on the ship?

Entertainment and performance is the star of the show aboard the Scarlet Lady. Live entertainment seemingly pops up around every corner of the ship.

Because of this atmosphere, there is no cruise director, instead, there is a “Happenings” cast made up of several personalities including “the Artist," “the Dancer,” “the Gamer” and more. They pop up throughout your journey and lead to fun and highly interactive experiences.

The Bottom Line

Virgin Voyages is offering a lot to differentiate them from some of the players in the industry, but at the end of the day, it is still a cruise. A very cool cruise though, worth the trip.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Virgin Voyages ship

Gene Sloan

Anyone looking for the best Virgin Voyages cruise itinerary will want to start with its sailings to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

The three-ship line has focused most of its energy since its debut in 2021 on creating relatively short, fun, adult-focused voyages out of Miami and San Juan, Puerto Rico, to the two regions, with two of its vessels spending a significant amount of their time on such itineraries.

For a line with so few ships, that makes sense, as the Bahamas and Caribbean account for the biggest chunk of demand for cruises.

Still, as Virgin Voyages grows — it has a fourth ship on order — it is likely to greatly expand its offerings in other parts of the world.

Already, in addition to a year-round presence in the Bahamas and Caribbean, Virgin Voyages has been offering regular sailings in the Mediterranean on a seasonal basis, from spring to fall, with at least one and sometimes two ships. With the arrival of its third ship recently, it also was able to expand its offerings with its first voyages to Australia and New Zealand.

While the latter voyages aren't starting up until the end of 2023, they're already open for bookings.

What are the best Virgin Voyages destinations you can visit and itineraries you can choose? Here are TPG's top five picks.

Short sailings to The Bahamas and Caribbean

virgin cruise ship reviews

Virgin Voyages got its start offering short sailings to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Miami, and that's still the line's biggest cruise destination focus. In fact, one of Virgin Voyages' two vessels currently in operation, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady , does nothing but short sailings to the Bahamas and Caribbean out of Miami.

In all cases, these sailings include a stop in the Bahamas. Some then add a Caribbean stop, while others add a stop in Florida.

Related: I've been on more than 150 cruise ships; here's why Scarlet Lady surprised me

Specifically, Scarlet Lady offers four different four- and five-night Bahamas itineraries out of Miami year-round. All include a stop at Bimini in the Bahamas, where the line has a private beach club , as well as a single call in either Mexico, the Dominican Republic or Key West, Florida. The four itineraries are:

  • Fire and Sunset Soirees itinerary: a four-night cruise to Bimini and Key West, plus one sea day
  • Riviera Maya itinerary: a five-night cruise to Bimini and Cozumel, Mexico, plus two sea days
  • Dominican Haze itinerary: a five-night cruise to Bimini and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, plus two sea days
  • Mayan Sol itinerary: a five-night cruise to Bimini and Costa Maya, Mexico, plus two sea days

In keeping with its "time to let loose" adults-only vibe, Virgin Voyages has built relatively late stays into several of the port calls on these itineraries, allowing passengers to maximize their fun time ashore. The typical stay at Bimini — where the line holds DJ-led pool parties at its private beach club late into the day — extends until 8 p.m., which is later than most ships stay at Bahamian ports. Visits to Cozumel, Mexico, also extend to 8 p.m.

Scarlet Lady has operated these sailings since it debuted as Virgin's first vessel in 2021, and it'll continue rotating through the itineraries until May 2024. At that point, Scarlet Lady's nearly identical sister vessel, the 2,770-passenger Valiant Lady, will take over these Bahamas and Caribbean routes.

Longer sailings to the Bahamas and Caribbean

virgin cruise ship reviews

Initially, Virgin Voyages only offered shorter sailings of five or fewer nights to the Bahamas and Caribbean. But its list of itineraries in the regions is now peppered with longer voyages of six to eight nights.

These are sailings that stop in more distant Caribbean destinations such as St. Croix and Roatan, Honduras, and will appeal to cruisers who find trips of just four or five days too short.

Related: 11 things I loved on Virgin Voyages, and 6 things I kind of hated

For 2024, Virgin is offering four such longer itineraries, two of which are out of Miami and operated by the line's second ship, Valiant Lady , as well as its original vessel, Scarlet Lady:

  • Eastern Caribbean Antilles itinerary: an eight-night cruise to San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Croix; Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and Bimini, plus two sea days
  • Western Caribbean Charm itinerary: a six-night cruise to Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; and Bimini, plus two sea days

The other two longer Caribbean itineraries that Virgin is offering in 2024 are both out of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and operated only by Valiant Lady.

  • Sunsets in the Lesser Antilles itinerary: a seven-night cruise to Aruba, Curacao, Martinique and St. Kitts, plus two sea days
  • Southeastern Caribbean Isles itinerary: a seven-night cruise to Tortola, Antigua, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia and Barbados, plus one sea day

Virgin also operates one-off sailings out of Miami around the winter holidays. Typical is a six-night "Valiant Caribbean Holidays" sailing out of Miami on Dec. 20, 2024, visiting Puerto Plata, Nassau and Bimini.

The Mediterranean

virgin cruise ship reviews

Another top destination for Virgin Voyages is the Mediterranean , where the line has been expanding quickly as it adds new ships.

In 2023, Virgin sent its new ship, Resilient Lady, to the Mediterranean through October to join Valiant Lady in the region, doubling up on its Mediterranean departures as compared to 2022. And the line plans a similar two-ship lineup for the Mediterranean again in 2024, when it'll be Scarlet Lady joining Resilient Lady in the region from spring to fall.

The addition of a second ship in the Mediterranean for the summer season has allowed Virgin Voyages to offer seven-night voyages every week during the season out of both Barcelona and Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens) — a first for the line.

For 2024, Scarlet Lady will be based in Barcelona (taking the place of Valiant Lady), offering two western Mediterranean itineraries that mostly focus on stops in Spain and France. Specifically, one will spend most of its time at the Spanish islands of Mallorca and Ibiza along with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France, while the other features stops in Ibiza; the French island of Corsica; Toulon, France; and the port for Carrara, Italy.

Resilient Lady will continue to be based in Piraeus, alternating between eastern Mediterranean itineraries that focus on the Greek islands and the Croatian coast, respectively.

Related: Don't miss these extra perks with the Virgin Voyages loyalty program

The Greek Islands itinerary, called Greek Island Glow, includes stops at Santorini, Rhodes and Mykonos, as well as a visit to Bodrum, Turkey.

As with Virgin's Bahamas and Caribbean itineraries, its Mediterranean itineraries are specifically designed for fun-seeking travelers looking for a late-night experience.

In the case of the Greek Islands sailings, Resilient Lady's Santorini visit is a day call that continues until 10 p.m. The Mykonos stop on the same sailing is an overnight call, with the ship remaining in port until 2 p.m. on the day after it arrives.

The Croatian coast-focused itinerary, called Adriatic Sea and Greek Gems, also includes several late-night stops. The ship stays in Split and Dubrovnik in Croatia until 9 p.m. and 10 p.m., respectively. A call at Corfu, Greece, lasts until 9 p.m.

Australia and New Zealand

virgin cruise ship reviews

The first Virgin Voyages sailings to Australia and New Zealand on the line's new Resilient Lady will begin this winter. After its initial summer cruising in the Mediterranean, the vessel will reposition to Australia in December for a series of 11 sailings ranging from five to 14 nights.

Among them will be round-trip sailings out of Melbourne, Australia, as well as one-way trips between Melbourne and Auckland, New Zealand. Itineraries include:

  • Aussie MerMaiden: a five-night cruise out of Melbourne with stops at Hobart and Burnie in Tasmania, plus one sea day
  • Resilient New Year's Pacific Ahoy: a 14-night cruise from Melbourne to Auckland with stops at Hobart and Burnie in Tasmania; Sydney; and Tauranga, Napier and Picton in New Zealand, as well as five sea days
  • Tasman Sea, Fjords and Maori Shores: an 11-night cruise from Auckland to Melbourne with stops at Tauranga, Dunedin and Christ Church in New Zealand, and Hobart and Burnie in Tasmania, plus four sea days

A pair of one-way, 15-night trips between Singapore and Australia will bookend the Australia and New Zealand sailings. Scheduled for November 2023 and March 2024, the two sailings offer overnight stays in Bali and calls at Airlie Beach, Cairns and Darwin in Australia.

Transatlantic

virgin cruise ship reviews

The expansion of Virgin Voyages sailings in the Bahamas and Caribbean this year meant the line could send more ships back and forth between Europe and North America than in the past. That's created an expanded lineup of so-called "repositioning" cruises across the Atlantic that feature many sea days.

Among the transatlantic sailings on the line's schedule for 2024 are:

  • A 14-night voyage from Miami to Barcelona departing April 21, 2024, that includes 10 sea days plus stops at Madeira, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca. The voyage will take place on Scarlet Lady.
  • A 16-night voyage from Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) to Miami departing Nov. 28, 2024, that includes 11 sea days plus stops at Barcelona, Malaga, Madeira and Santa Cruz in the Canary Islands. The voyage also will take place on Scarlet Lady.

Bottom line

Virgin Voyages is still a relatively small line with just three ships, and that means it can't offer too big a range of itineraries. But with at least one more vessel joining its fleet over the coming year, its destination offerings are growing.

The brand has the broadest array of options in the Bahamas and Caribbean, where it got its start, and is rapidly expanding in Europe. Sailings in Australia and New Zealand are just beginning this coming winter.

  3. What it's really like to sail with Virgin Voyages

Last year, Tom McAlpin, the president and CEO of Virgin Voyages, told TPG's resident cruise expert Gene Sloan that on early sailings of Scarlet Lady, the average passenger age was in the 50s, with plenty on board in their 60s and 70s. Based on my trip, I'd say that is still a pretty accurate representation.

  11. Scarlet Lady cruise ship review: What to expect on board Virgin Voyages

Scarlet Lady, Virgin Voyages' original cruise ship, takes all your preconceived notions of a cruise ship and turns them on their head. The ship does not have a buffet or a cavernous banquet-style dining room. Kids are not welcome, but the adults-only ship gives grownups plenty of opportunities to play in both childlike and mature ways.
