Key information on how to prepare and apply for a health law program at Georgetown Law.

Eligibility

Georgetown Law’s LL.M. programs are open to both foreign and U.S.-educated lawyers. U.S.-educated candidates must have received a J.D. degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. Students educated outside the United States must have already completed the university portion of their legal education and received the degree required for admission to the practice of law in their country. Admission to the bar is not required.

For more information on degree eligibility, visit Georgetown Law’s information page here .

For guidance on the required degree from specific countries, please visit the LSAC website . Have more questions about eligibility? Please email the admissions team at [email protected] . For more information about the application process and required documents, visit Georgetown Law’s application information page .

What makes a strong health law candidate?

One of the strengths of the health law programs is that our students bring a wealth of different perspectives, experiences, expertise, and professional goals. Most of our students have at least two years of professional experience, with an average of about seven years. Others have decades of experience. We also consider applications from recent law school graduates with strong grades and demonstrated interest in health law through coursework, internships, volunteer work, or other means. No matter your background, successful applications clearly articulate how the specific degree program will help you achieve your professional goals.

If you would like to discuss whether our programs are a good fit for you, please email [email protected] .

Georgetown law’s supreme court institute celebrates 25 years.

April 30, 2024

visit georgetown law school

Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr. shared memories at the Georgetown Law Supreme Court Institute’s 25th Anniversary celebration.

It began as a pie-in-the-sky idea from a faculty member, and a quarter-century later has become an invaluable resource for lawyers preparing for oral argument before the U.S. Supreme Court – and a precious educational opportunity for Georgetown Law students.

On April 24, Georgetown Law marked the 25th anniversary of its Supreme Court Institute (SCI), a unique organization that holds moot courts – opportunities for advocates who’ll soon appear at the Supreme Court to pressure-test their arguments before a panel of law professors and experienced Supreme Court Bar members – in advance of nearly every case on the Court’s docket. Three Supreme Court justices, Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr., Associate Justice Elena Kagan and Associate Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh; the current Solicitor General, Elizabeth Prelogar, along with seven of her predecessors; and most of the past and present leadership of the SCI were there to celebrate.

In his remarks, the Chief Justice congratulated the Law Center on the milestone and reminisced about his own experiences with the SCI. Not only was he one of the first advocates to moot an argument with the Institute – in 1999’s Rice v. Cayetano – he also served as a guest Justice many times before becoming a real one. “I have been with you from the start. You had me at hello,” the Chief Justice said.

He reflected as well on the important role advocates play in our legal system. “Subjecting an issue to the crucible of fair and hard-fought argument can be the best and fairest way to get to the correct result, but only if there has been careful preparation on both sides. For a quarter of a century, the Institute has brought together the very best of the Appellate Bar to prepare lawyers for appearances before our court,” said the Chief Justice. “This has been a gift not only to the lawyers but also to the justices, for which we are grateful.”

This video on the founding and evolution of the Supreme Court Institute was shown at the 25th anniversary celebration:

In a video commemorating the anniversary, Harvard Law Professor Richard Lazarus recalled how he proposed his idea for the SCI when he was on the Georgetown Law faculty and was assigned to serve on a long-range planning committee. His ambitious idea to form an institute that could host Supreme Court moots came true thanks to an “only-at-Georgetown” combination of factors that include a faculty well stocked with appellate advocates, Constitutional law experts and former Supreme Court clerks; physical proximity to the Supreme Court; and support from leadership, including Dean Emerita Judith Areen , who green-lit the concept in 1998, and current Dean William M. Treanor , who spoke proudly of the educational opportunities the SCI provides law students.

“Students… gain a close-up view of the most pressing issues in law today, witnessing firsthand what it takes to prepare for argument before the justices – and that’s experience they can get nowhere else,” said Treanor.

A group of people standing in two rows, in a formal moot courtroom setting. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and Chief Justice John Roberts are both in the front row.

Front, L-R: Justice Kavanaugh, SCI Faculty Director Professor Steven Goldblatt, L’70, Chief Justice Roberts, Dean Treanor, SCI Executive Director Professor Irv Gornstein. Back, L-R: Former SCI Assistant Director Kal Golde, current SCI Assistant Director Maddie Sloat, L’27, former SCI Assistant Director Sarah Naiman, L’21, current SCI Director Debbie Shrager, SCI founder Richard Lazarus.

Indeed, the audience of law professors, Supreme Court Bar members and legal journalists also included some eighty current law students who are in classes, seminars and clinics that have worked SCI moots in their curricula. (Additional students took a break from studying in the John Wolff International and Comparative Law Reading Room to peer down through a glass wall into the atrium where the event was taking place.) Whether or not assigned to by their professors, all Georgetown Law students are welcome to attend any SCI moot court, as long as they have no ties to the lawyers or entities in the case being argued.

As Professor from Practice and current SCI Executive Director Irv Gornstein – who has by far the most SCI moots under his belt, having taken part in 332 as of last month – put it in the anniversary video, “When you can get the best advocates in our day talking to students about what they were thinking about, I don’t know how you could get a better education than that.”

Former Solicitor General and current Distinguished Lecturer and SCI Senior Fellow Paul Clement marveled at the generosity of Supreme Court Bar members who volunteer to serve on SCI panels for colleagues and potential adversaries alike. “It is all done in the service of ensuring that the Supreme Court gets the best possible adversarial presentation of the issues. That is all in the best traditions of the bar, but I dare say it seems a bit more counter-cultural in 2024 than it did when this project started in 1999 – and that makes the Institute and the Supreme Court bar well worth celebrating,” he said.

Longtime SCI Faculty Director Professor Steven Goldblatt , L’70 – the runner-up to Gornstein in SCI moot participation, having himself served on 240 panels – summed up the collective warm feeling in the room among all the past and current SCI staffers, Georgetown Law professors and Supreme Court Bar members who’d played large and small roles in the Institute’s work over the years.

“This is a celebration of all the people who have participated in this, and there’s a certain love that we all have for helping,” said Goldblatt. “When you do the moot and you improve somebody’s argument, it’s a feel-good feeling and you stay with it. It just doesn’t go away.”

A group of people standing in two rows in a formal Moot Courtroom. Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan and U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar are in the front row.

Eight current and former Solicitors General were on hand to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Supreme Court Institute. Front, L-R: Professor Neal Katyal, Associate Justice Elena Kagan, Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar, Dean William Treanor. Back, L-R: Noel Francisco, Jeffrey Wall, Distinguished Lecturer Paul D. Clement, Donald B. Verrilli, Jr., Seth Waxman.

We encourage you to join our  Mailing List  to stay up to date with developments on campus, and future events sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

Greetings from Georgetown University! Founded in 1789, Georgetown is the nation’s oldest Catholic and Jesuit college. Overlooking the Potomac River and the city of Washington, DC, it is certainly easy to understand why Georgetown’s early students often referred to the University as The Hilltop. Please visit our website to learn more about our In-person and Virtual offerings. We look forward to meeting you.

    Traveling to the Hilltop

Given the traffic and congestion of the Georgetown area, we strongly encourage visitors to utilize public transportation. For those arriving by car, we recommend several parking garages in the Georgetown neighborhood, as the University itself has very limited parking. Please view Directions to Campus page for more detailed information.

    Exploring the Campus

We encourage all prospective students to participate in our information sessions and tours. Information sessions are led by members of the admissions staff and provide ample time for you to learn about the admissions process in detail.     Exploring the Georgetown Neighborhood

visit georgetown law school

The campus is nestled in the Georgetown historic neighborhood of Washington, DC. The experience of a Georgetown students seamlessly merge two worlds: the University campus, and the Georgetown neighborhood. We strongly emphasize that prospective students should explore both the campus and the surrounding neighborhood to better obtain a full understanding of the day-to-day life of a Georgetown student. The charming “village” of Georgetown, twelve square blocks in size, retains the spirit of the colonial town in which the University was founded more than two centuries ago. The immediate neighborhood boasts federal-style townhouses and cobblestone, tree-lined streets leading to the intersection of M St. and Wisconsin Ave., which represent the heart of the Georgetown neighborhood.

    Experiencing the Nation’s Capital

No visit to the Hilltop would be complete without exploring the dynamic and bustling city of Washington, D.C. The university rests in close proximity to the White House, Congress, the Supreme Court as well as major theaters, concert halls and museums. In addition to attracting notable guest speakers, Georgetown provides unparalleled access to internship programs across multiple sectors, a wide variety of cultural events, and all that DC has to offer.

While at Georgetown, students develop a more thorough understanding of themselves and of the world around them, not simply a set of professional skills. This is evident in the achievements of distinguished alumni , including many ambassadors, numerous members of Congress, a current Supreme Court justice, and one former U.S. president. To be part of the academic experience at Georgetown is to join a multifaceted dialogue focused on intellectual, personal and spiritual growth.

Below are links to five different categories of activities, all of which will give you a strong picture of the typical experience of a Georgetown student and their favorite places to eat, shop, and explore.

Online & part-time options.

Complete your LL.M. degree online or part-time and get all the benefits of a Georgetown education - without taking a break from your career.

Get a first-class education with the flexibility to pursue your degree on your own schedule.

Part-Time Programs

We offer all of our programs on a part-time basis. Explore our  LL.M. degrees ,  certificates , and  joint/dual degrees  and then consult with our  academic advisors  to chart a path.

Note: International students in F-1 or J-1 status are not able to enroll in our part-time or online programs. Please email an International Student Advisor if you have any questions.

Online Programs

We offer two online LL.M. degrees and two online certificates, designed for working professionals, in the Tax field. Students enroll in the same courses as on-campus students, complete the course at the same pace, and take the same final exam.

Our Online Programs offer students the same high-quality instruction and learning experience as the traditional LL.M. and Certificate programs, but allow students the flexibility to attend class and complete assignments at times that are convenient to them. The tuition and program requirements are the same for both on-campus and online programs.

The majority of our online courses are asynchronous and lecture-capture-based, with video recordings of on-campus class lectures available for streaming online within 24 hours of the live class taking place. These courses do not require that a student “attend” virtually at a specific date or time.

We also have a handful of courses that are synchronous and delivered via Zoom videoconferencing technology. These classes do require live virtual attendance each week, and the delivery method and class times will be noted in the course schedule.

As our online courses are equally as rigorous as our on-campus courses, students should expect to spend approximately two-three hours per credit hour per week on coursework in addition to two hours of class time. This translates to approximately six to eight hours per week for each 2-credit class. See our Online Programs FAQ here .

Students May Pursue the Following Degrees Online

  • LL.M. in Taxation
  • M.S.L. in Taxation (for non-lawyers)

Students May Pursue the Following Certificates Online

  • Estate Planning Certificate
  • Employee Benefits Certificate
  • International Taxation

Special Note about Bar Exams

Completion of any online/Executive LL.M., Certificate, or MSL degree will not result in professional licensure of any kind, nor qualify a student to sit for a state bar exam. Today, before a packed auditorium at Moscow State University, Vice President Biden delivered a powerful speech to U.S. and Russian students and business leaders. Echoing messages conveyed during his earlier meetings with Russian President Dimitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin over the course of his three-day visit, Vice President Biden hailed the successful “reset” of U.S.-Russian relations and reiterated his call for broader economic cooperation between the two countries.

On the issue of human rights and the status of democracy and the rule of law in Russia – a topic discussed at length in meetings with Russian civil society and political opposition leaders earlier today, the Vice President said:  “History showsthat in industrialized societies, economic modernization and political modernization must go hand and hand.”

Yesterday, the Vice President and Dr. Biden visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden. As a military honor guard looked on, the Vice President observed a moment of silence in recognition of the Russian soldiers who died in World War II and ceremonially placed a wreath that read “To those who fell in the fight against fascism, from the American people.”

Later, the Vice President attended a signing ceremony for the sale of Boeing 777 jets to Aeroflot – which will support more than 10,000 jobs at home - in the impressive building of the Moscow School of Management at Skolkovo, an area that Moscow hopes to develop into the Russian equivalent of Silicon Valley. Afterwards, he and Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov led a roundtable discussion with Russian and American business leaders. The Vice President added that beyond negotiations between our governments, the U.S. is also relying on the growing connections between Russian and American business leaders and leaders in civil society to build a comprehensive relationship between the U.S. and Russia.

The History of the World: Nixon visits Moscow

The history of the world: sixth edition.

  • May 22 nd 2013
22 May 1972 The following is a brief extract from The History of the World: Sixth Edition by J.M. Roberts and O.A. Westad.

In October 1971 the UN General Assembly had recognized the People’s Republic as the only legitimate representative of China in the United Nations, and expelled the representative of Taiwan. This was not an outcome the United States had anticipated until the crucial vote was taken. The following February, there took place a visit by Nixon to China that was the first visit ever made by an American president to mainland Asia, and one he described as an attempt to bridge ‘sixteen thousand miles and twenty-two years of hostility.’

When Nixon followed his Chinese trip by becoming also the first American president to visit Moscow (in May 1972), and this was followed by an interim agreement on arms limitation – the first of its kind – it seemed that another important change had come about. The stark, polarized simplicities of the Cold War were blurring, however doubtful the future might be.

Community in Diversity: Daniela Zuluaga (MBA’24)

Maria Camila Gutierrez

April 29, 2024

Daniela Zuluaga (MBA’24) is passionate about creating transformative impact through diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. Through her leadership roles on campus and leading with the idea that DEI has a relevant economic component, Zuluaga has inspired others to create an inclusive environment for all.

Zuluaga’s interest in DEI began while she was pursuing her master’s in economics where she explored gender disparities in the labor market. Since then, Zuluaga has dedicated her career to fostering more welcoming communities. She has worked in multilateral organizations where she has researched gender, education, and labor markets.

“DEI is a topic for all of us to explore, regardless of whether we identify with a specific gender or religion,” she said. “We should always care. I strive to encourage a sense of community that respects the differences of gender, race, and religion.”

At the Inter-American Development Bank, where she worked as a consultant, she established the first employee resource group for people with disabilities to provide her colleagues with a network to overcome their challenges.

In her role as a consultant at the International Finance Corporation, Zuluaga contributed to building a business case for the economic inclusion of people with disabilities and the LGBTQIA+ community. She analyzed best practices for integrating these populations into the economy.

Zuluaga’s commitment to DEI extended to Georgetown McDonough, where she’s served as the vice president of DEI for the Student Government Association since 2023. She’s organized workshops on gender pronouns, supported affinity clubs in their daily initiatives, developed a survey to understand people’s needs around DEI, and advocated for attendance at events that offer job opportunities for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

“As a community, we have to care, engage, and participate in initiatives that create impact,” said Zuluaga. “Georgetown’s community invites us to really care about each other. It’s important to continue fostering our Jesuit values overall.”

Zuluaga believes that DEI initiatives benefit both individuals and institutions. She explained that promoting inclusive environments enhances the well-being of the community and also boosts the performance of corporations.

“I believe work around DEI is a win-win situation,” she said. “Companies that promote an inclusive and diverse environment experience lower turnover rates and more creativity. Organizations that have employees from different backgrounds benefit from broader ideas and perspectives, which ultimately leads to better outcomes.”

In the long term, Daniela envisions weaving DEI into every aspect of her personal and professional life. When looking to the future, her dedication to this mission is long-lasting. For Zuluaga, creating diverse environments is not just a personal commitment; it’s a shared responsibility.
