Best part of our Morocco trip was the desert. This place is real, the desert is calm. The desert doesn’t lie. The silence here hurts. Our tour was operated by Merzouga Experiences, it was perfect. We spend one night between the dunes, under the stars, meal cooked by amiable berbers, one of the bestdiners we’ve had in Morocco. Sunset and sunrise, we will never forget them. Camel rides – check.

incredible experience in the desert! ride the camel, color of the sand, the sunset and the sunrise…all was perfect. The camel track starts at 4 pm, you arrive at the camp after 1 hour and you can see the sunset. At dinner you can eat taijine and berber soup, very good dinner! the staff is very kind and fun. Total amount for 1 night: 30 euros…see sky full of stars without end is priceless

I along with a group of 7 had a phenomenal time with the private tour guides travelling around Morocco. The Guides where very knowledgable about every location we stopped off. Essential Facts and Information About Merzouga, Morocco

Located on the edge of the starkly beautiful Sahara Desert, Merzouga is a small, dusty town in eastern Morocco . Although the town itself has little to offer the intrepid traveler (besides a handful of hotels and restaurants), it is famous as the gateway to the vast Erg Chebbi dunes. Here, soaring peaks of sand change color with the shifting light of dawn and dusk. Camel trains create romantic silhouettes, and Berber villages act as remote oases in an environment that has remained unchanged for thousands of years. These are the archetypal Sahara landscapes of which Moroccan dreams are made. 

Camping & Camels

Life in Merzouga revolves around the nearby desert, and the most authentic way to experience it is on camelback. Several operators offer the opportunity to join a camel safari into the dunes. Many of these tours include an overnight stay at a desert campsite, or in a traditional Berber village. The former offers the unparalleled romance of a night under canvas beneath the blazing desert stars; whilst the latter allows you to sample unique Berber food, music and culture. Tours vary greatly in cost and comfort, so make sure to shop around before you decide which option is best for you. 

Adventure Activities

Of course, the Sahara also provides ample inspiration for a number of  adrenalin-fuelled activities . If you prefer the thrill of an engine over the swaying gait of the Merzouga camel trains, opt for a quad bike tour instead. Trips can last a few hours or several days, but all of them give you the chance to indulge in some serious off-road fun. Those with quads of steel can try their hand at sand-boarding or sand-skiing - kind of like traditional snow skiing, only considerably hotter and without the convenience of a ski lift! Hot air balloon rides over the dune sea can be arranged. Although pricey, witnessing the splendor of the Sahara from a unique birds-eye perspective is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience. 

Desert Wildlife

No matter how you choose to explore, keep an eye out for fascinating desert-adapted wildlife in and around Merzouga. The dunes are home to unusual reptiles including the Berber skink and the fringe-toed lizard; while large-eared mammals like the jerboa and the fennec fox come out to hunt under cover of darkness. In particular, Merzouga is a good destination for birders . Nearby saltwater lake Dayet Sriji provides an oasis for greater flamingos as well as a collection of egrets, storks, and ducks; while the dunes themselves harbor native desert birds including sandgrouse and bustards.  

Getting to Merzouga

Located 350 miles/ 560 kilometers east of Marrakesh , Merzouga is relatively remote. The nearest large city is Errachidia. If you want to avoid the long drive from Marrakesh, consider flying into Errachidia's Moulay Ali Cherif Airport via Royal Air Maroc instead. From there, it's a two-hour drive to Merzouga. If you'd rather save money,  CTM  and  Supratours  operate overnight buses between Fez and Merzouga, as well as a long bus from Marrakesh to Merzouga. 

There are also plenty of tour companies offering extended itineraries from Marrakesh and Fez. These include a guide, different organized activities and 4x4 transport, and usually, last for several days. Although three days tours are popular, opt for a four or five-day tour if you can so that you get to spend more time admiring the desert scenery. Some tour companies offer a trip that starts in Marrakesh and ends in Fez, stopping off in Merzouga en route.

Best Time to Visit & Where to Stay

In the Moroccan summer (June - September), Merzouga and the western Sahara Desert can be brutally hot, averaging around 45ºC/ 115ºF during the middle of the day. March and April are often plagued by the sandstorms of the seasonal Sirocco wind. Therefore, the best time to travel is from October to February, when daytime temperatures are pleasant and the chances of sandstorms are slim. Bring plenty of layers, as temperatures drop dramatically after dark. Rainfall is almost non-existent throughout the year. 

Recommended accommodation options in Merzouga include Hotel Kasbah Mohayut , a good value hotel with a swimming pool and stunning dune views. Auberge Les Roches is an excellent option for travelers on a budget, with affordable room rates and a tasty free breakfast. Guest House Merzouga is another quality B&B, made special by a rooftop terrace with beautiful Erg Chebbi vistas. Family-run, this is Berber hospitality at its very best.

Of all of the incredible destinations in Morocco, there are few, if any, places that draw adventure travelers more than the desert town of Merzouga.

Merzouga, Morocco, sits on the northern tip of the vast and beautiful Sahara Desert in Eastern Morocco. For a long time, this dusty town, without much in the way of roads or infrastructure, was a stopping off point for those looking to explore the massive Erg Chebbi Dunes, where towering peaks of rusty gold sand cast dramatic silhouettes over the landscape.

But in the past few years, more attention has been paid to just how incredible and unique this remote region of Morocco truly is.

Although Merzouga is still focused on intrepid explorers interested in Bedouin camping, dessert camel treks, and remote rally races, the throngs of visitors are bringing to light the unique culture and spirit of one of the country’s most overlooked destinations.

For centuries, Merzouga, Morocco, remained relatively unchanged. The epic dunes of the Sahara Desert ebbed and flowed like waves trapped in slow motion. Nomadic Berber tribes roamed with their camels to known watering holes and grasslands. And the red, dusty air of the Sahara Desert cast a warm glow over the wild landscapes.

The town sits about 31 miles (50 km) from the border with Algeria and about an eight-and-a-half-hour drive from the bustling city of Marrakech .

Merzouga is a city with a reputation among thrill-seekers. It’s been dubbed “a wonderland of sand” and a “desert theme park” due to the adrenaline-pumping adventures and epic landscapes that surround it. And shockingly, amongst all of the sand, dust, and dry desert air, Merzouga is also home to the most significant natural underground body of water in Morocco.

The land around the town was once a lush, tropical jungle, and as the landscape was swallowed up by the world’s largest desert, it became home to some of the most impressive sand dunes in the world. It eventually became a transit point for Bedouin and Berber merchants and even acted as a fort during the French colonial rule between 1916 and 1932.

Things To Do In Merzouga, Morocco

For a tiny town without much in the way of streets or stores, there are a tremendous number of things to do in Merzouga, Morocco. From unique foodie experiences to desert adventures, Merzouga is packed with attractions. Here are some of the top experiences.

Berber Camping in the Sahara Desert

Ever since our first experience camping with Bedouin tribes in Jordan’s Wadi Rum Desert , we’ve had a little obsession with desert camping. There is something surreal about the absolute peace and quiet of the desert night.

There are few places where stars will shine so bright as in the desert. And the remote Erg Chebbi Dunes offer an absolutely phenomenal backdrop for sunsets.

Most visitors arrive at the Berber campgrounds in Merzouga on camelback (although vehicles can also reach the area without too much difficulty). And the relaxing time in the desert can be filled with sandboarding, camel rides, and quad-biking.

Evenings at the Merzouga desert camps are typically spent with simple and delicious Berber meals followed by singing and dancing around a campfire. Our visit was extra celebratory, as many of the workers and guides were seeing each other for the first time post-Covid, and celebrations were so incredibly joyful.

There are all ranges of comfort levels for Merzouga camping, from simple tents to luxury glamping. We stayed at the Luxury Overnight Camp , and it was absolutely fabulous.

Sunset Camel Rides in the Sahara Desert

There aren’t many things in the world that are as awkward as climbing onto or off of a camel. But once you’ve made it up, all of your troubles seem as far away as the ground beneath you.

Sahara Desert camel rides are a huge draw for visitors in Merzouga, and after experiencing it ourselves, there’s no surprise as to why.

Winding between the towering Erg Chebbi Dunes as the sun sinks low on the horizon is magical. The entire landscape lights up with a golden glow. The rides often take a break so that adventurers can climb one of the dunes to watch the sun make its last descent below the horizon.

Camel rides can be done as a stand-alone tour but are often a part of the popular desert camping experiences as well.

Quad Biking Through The Erg Chebbi Dunes

When we first planned to visit Morocco with kids , I wasn’t sure that quad-biking would be on the final list of Merzouga activities. Even as we arrived at the Merzouga quad-bike tours , I was under the impression that 8-year-old D would ride with me.

Much to my surprise, in a few minutes (and after a brief training session), the four of us were ripping through the Sahara Desert on our own quad-bikes, climbing dunes and doing our best not to get our wheels stuck in the sand.

We spent two hours shredding dunes, popping wheelies, and enjoying the magical views of the Erg Chebbi Dunes. And we weren’t ready for it to be over.

Go Sandboarding in Merzouga

Sandboarding is something that our family became obsessed with in Huacachina, Peru . Since then, we’ve enjoyed it in many places, including Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado . Sandboarding is a lot like snowboarding. But instead of riding a cushion of fresh snow, you’re surfing the sandy powder of sand dunes.

Sandboarding is often included in a number of Merzouga tours and camping experiences. You can also rent them at shops in town for about 100 MAD for the whole day. Just keep in mind that trekking to the tops of these dunes can be pretty intense, especially in the afternoon heat.

If you are planning a DIY Merzouga travel experience, you might want to bring your own board. Just make sure to pack lots of wax , or you won’t move very far.

Enjoy Some Desert Stargazing

There are few things that I like more than staying up late and watching the stars dance across the sky. The epic skies of the Sahara Desert make for an absolutely delightful place for stargazing, and the massive Erg Chebbi Dunes are one of the most epic backdrops in existence.

If you want to photograph the sky here, make sure that you bring a tripod (this is the one I use , but anyone will do in a pinch) to keep your shots clear and set your focus to infinity. Then just sit back and enjoy the show. The small population and remote location mean that the skies around Merzouga are epically dark.

View Flamingoes In the Salt Water of Dayet Srji

I’ll be totally honest. I did not know that this was one of the things to do in Merzouga before I traveled there. And as a result, I completely missed it.

The lake is called  Dayet Srji,  and it’s located West of Merzouga. It can easily be reached by walking and  it takes about 45 minutes to get there on foot from the village .

About a 45-minute walk from town is a lake called Dayet Srji. Although the lake is usually dry during the summer, during the winter, it’s a wetland paradise where migratory birds, including flamingoes, often stop to enjoy the salty water. The lake reminds me of the flamingo-filled lakes near San Pedro de Atacama in Chile, where we spent some incredible mornings watching the sunrise.

Dayet Srji may not have reached popularity yet, but it is a popular place among locals. Many come here to picnic and enjoy the sunset.

Listen to Gnawa Music In Khamlia

There are a number of unique ethnic groups within the Berber communities of Merzouga, one of these is the Gnawa, unique due to their dark skin and southern African ancestry. One of the things that have made the Gnawa such a draw in Merzouga is their energetic and exciting musical performances.

The Gnawa were slaves brought to Northern Africa as slaves from Central and Southern Africa in desert caravans. Now they make a large portion of the population of the town of Khamlia, just a short 3 miles (7 km) distance from Merzouga town.

There are two musical groups within the town, one called Bambara and the other one (which we visited) called Pigeon des Sables. They have an open-door policy, so anyone can visit at any time to enjoy Berber tea along with live music and dancing.

There is no cost for the experience. However, guests are encouraged to purchase a CD or offer a tip to help support the locals.

Wander The Mines of the M’Fis Ghost Town

Morocco’s landscape holds a wealth of minerals that have long been plundered by the government and its overseers. A good example of this is the ghost of M’Fis, which lies just outside of Merzouga.

The mining town was set up by the French and played a vital role in the importance of the Merzouga region in the early 20th century. These days, however, M’Fis is all but abandoned.

The mine produced vast amounts of quartz and khol, a mineral often used by Moroccan women as make-up. The products were then part of a lucrative French export business. A village sprung up near the mine, complete with a mosque, houses, and a cemetery accounting for the short lifespan and difficult working conditions of the village.

The productivity of M’Fis began to dwindle in the early 20th century and eventually was abandoned in 1956. Although some miners still visit the mine today to find remnants of material in the deep scars and tunnels beneath the ground.

Search For Ancient Fossils

The cracked, dry earth of Merzouga, Morocco, might seem like a strange place for ancient aquatic fossils, but this stale earth was once the site of a vast inland sea. And when it lifted and emptied, it left behind one of the most valuable fossil deposits on the planet.

Most of the fossils mined in the Merzouga region are processed in the nearby town of Erfoud, where you can find Fossils Erfoud Morocco . This wild museum and store show the sheer volume of incredible fossils that have been pulled from the region.

And you can buy artwork, displays, and even toilets that are made entirely from fossils. Yes … toilets.

Visit a Berber Nomad Village

Much of southeastern Morocco still exists in much the same way that it has for centuries. This includes the nomadic Berber tribes that make their way through the harsh landscape with herds of camels, mules, and cattle.

Although these tribes move around frequently, many of the tour guides have connections within the communities and can arrange for visitors to get a unique look into these cultures that live vastly different lives from that which most of us know.

We spent a wonderful hour chatting with one of these villagers while our children played with theirs. We learned about their lifestyle, how they move their camps from place to place, and how they know which place to travel to next. It was an absolutely fascinating and heartwarming experience.

What Is The Best Time To Visit Merzouga?

Merzouga is a destination that can be visited year-round. However, it’s important to know that the Moroccan summers, especially between June and September, can see blisteringly hot temperatures during the day. During summer in Merzouga, temperatures can reach as high as 115ºF (45ºC) at mid-day.

During March and April in Merzouga, the desert winds, called the Sirocco Wind, tend to pick up, and the town is frequently buffeted by sand storms. We visited in March. And although the winds tended to be high, especially in the evening, it wasn’t awful.

The best time to travel to Merzouga is between October and February. During this time, the temperatures tend to be cooler, and the winds tend to be calm. Be aware, though, that temperatures can vary dramatically between the daytime and nighttime. Make sure to pack layers, especially if you are camping in the desert.

Where To Stay In Merzouga

Merzouga is an adventure town, so there are some excellent places to stay in Merzouga for every budget and comfort level ranging from hostels to luxury accommodations. Here are a few great options to choose from.

Riad Madu is where we stayed during our time in the town of Merzouga. This quaint hotel on the edge of town looks right out over the Erg Chebbi Dunes. It features large rooms, excellent food, and easy access to all of the best things to do in Merzouga.

The hotel offers an airport shuttle, rooms with air conditioning, private bathrooms, and a lovely two-story terrace that is perfect for stargazing. There’s also an on-site pool looking out over the dunes. You can find their rates and availability here.

Riad Chebbi

Riad Chebbi offers 4-star Merzouga accommodations right in the town of Merzouga. The hotel includes luxurious and comfortable rooms, a beautiful garden, an outdoor swimming pool, and an expansive lounge and terrace to relax on.

The helpful staff can help arrange tours, bike, and car rentals. They even offer ski equipment for those visiting in winter (yes, you can go skiing in Morocco). You can find their rates and availability here .

Planet Sahara

Planet Sahara is a traditional Moroccan guesthouse located right on the edge of the city center. They are known for their excellent food and fantastic coffee.

The riad features a shared TV lounge along with a relaxing outdoor setting that includes a fire pit where hosts regularly meet for drumming sessions. The staff here are accommodating in planning Merzouga tours. They welcome both couples and families to reasonably-priced traditional accommodation. You can find their prices and availability here .

Is It Safe To Visit Merzouga With Kids?

Morocco is increasingly becoming the “go-to” destination for  adventurous family travel . The accessibility to Europe, safe reputation, fascinating cultures, and wealth of unique attractions draw families from across the planet.

We can’t have imagined not including Mersouga in our plans during our ten-day Morocco itinerary . The entire region is unlike anywhere else in Morocco and is truly an adventure paradise. Merzouga offers a wildly exciting atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the more famous cities such as Fes and Marrakech .

Exploring the many things to do in Merzouga with kids is also pretty easy. Traffic here is quite relaxed in comparison with the major cities. And because there are so few vehicles on the go, the lack of proper streets and road rules tends to be less intimidating.

It’s worth noting that safety rules here are pretty nonexistent. Our eight-year-old was allowed to drive a full-sized ATV with about 5-minutes of training. Luckily he’s driven similar things in the past, such as snowmobiles in Finland , but it’s up to the parents and guardians to decide what’s safe in Merzouga because anything goes here.

Just remember that it isn’t a stroller-friendly town. I recommend either  bringing a child carrier  to get around.

La ville de Merzouga en tant que telle est d’un intérêt quasi-nul. Située aux confins des réseaux routiers du pays, la ville a l’allure poussiéreuse et désolante d’un avant-poste en bordure du plus grand désert du monde. Le centre-ville dispose de nombreux restaurants et agences sans charme à destination unique des touristes de passage. Car le principal intérêt de Merzouga ne réside pas dans la ville en tant que telle, mais dans le formidable paysage naturel qui l’entoure : le début du désert du Sahara et les plus belles dunes de la région.

Pour une authentique expérience, réservez lors de votre séjour au Maroc, une excursion en chameau dans le désert de préférence hors saison et sur plus d’un jour pour vous enfoncer un peu plus loin dans les dunes de sable et où les traces de bas des centaines d’autres expéditions ne sont pas aussi nombreuses.

A 35 km d’Erfoud, Merzouga avec ses célèbres dunes est la porte d’entrée du désert avec des paysages à couper le souffle.

Aux portes du mythique Sahara, Merzouga est devenue au fil des années et de son développement un haut-lieu du tourisme au Maroc . Je vous conseille vraiment de venir ici tant les dunes de l’erg Chebbi sont somptueuses.

Il y a encore quelques temps, peu de monde venait jusqu’ici pour admirer ces paysages uniques. Le secret de la beauté des lieux n’a de toute évidence pas été gardé. Aujourd’hui de nombreux touristes se pressent pour jouir des couleurs merveilleuses des levers et des couchers de soleil. La conséquence est que Merzouga s’est développée à une vitesse fulgurante. Les logements sont sortis de terre, ou plutôt du sable, les agences proposent des activités de plus en plus variées. Outre les classiques balades à dos de dromadaire, à moto, en véhicule tout-terrain, nuit dans le désert… il est même possible de faire du snowboard du haut des dunes ou de rejoindre Tombouctou en deux mois à dos de camélidé. Autant dire que cette aventure est à présent totalement déconseillée en raison des problèmes de sécurité du côté Algérien et Malien. Contentez-vous des activités proposées à Merzouga. Il y a déjà bien de quoi faire et sans danger.

Faire un trek à dos de dromadaire dans les plus hautes dunes du Maroc est une aventure inoubliable à mettre à votre agenda lors d’un séjour à Merzouga, au Maroc !

Merzouga donne accès à une partie du désert du Sahara. En effet, le désert de Merzouga est magnifique et fait 50 km de long par 5 km de large. C’est une étendue de dunes dorées ! Pour avoir fait une excursion aussi dans le désert de Zagora, je vous recommande davantage celui de Merzouga, les dunes y sont de sable d’une couleur qui se rapproche du rouge et il n’y a pas autant de végétation comparativement à l’autre.

Ayant déjà fait l’excursion à dos de dromadaires à Zagora, on a décidé d’aller explorer le désert à pied et on s’est fait un pique-nique dans les dunes. Hormis le sable qui s’infiltrait à chaque bouchée, j’en garde un excellent souvenir. Ensuite, on est allé gravir la plus haute dune à notre portée. Ouf, ce n’est pas de tout repos qu’escalader une dune ! Or, la vue qui nous attendait là-haut valait pleinement l’effort.

The desert has always inspired me and when I was young, I often imagined myself riding camels between the sand dunes of some far away country. I dreamed of sleeping under the stars in the desert while drinking tea next to a campfire.

Merzouga in the southern region of Morocco was the perfect place for me to live all of these fantasies. It’s a small town in the Sahara desert in Morocco, not too far from the Algerian border. It’s known as the door to Erg Chebbi , a huge stretch of sand dunes south of town.

Merzouga is such an iconic place to visit in Morocco that it’s considered one of the best destinations in the country !

I was there five years ago and couldn’t resist visiting this charming little village once more this year. I pitched my tent in the desert, got lost between the dunes, drank plenty of tea and saw more camels than I could imagine.

The best part is that it was super easy to get there and I did all of these activities without spending a fortune. If you want to experience the beauties of the Sahara desert without breaking your piggy bank, this is the place to visit.

1. Things to do in Erg Chebbi, the Merzouga desert in Morocco

Merzouga is a calm and quiet town in the Sahara, yet it offers a surprisingly big amount of cool fun activities.

The best time of the year to visit Merzouga is in spring between the months of March and May, or in fall between the months of September and November.

During these periods, the weather isn’t too hot and you’ll be able to enjoy your time in the desert much more. The temperature in summer reaches highs of 40°C (104°F ) and it rarely drops below 26.7°C (80°F) at night.

Regardless of the time of the year you visit Merzouga, always cover your head to avoid getting sunstroke. Sun protection is vital.

It could be a good idea to cover yourself with a wide-brimmed hat or a bandana. To avoid losing a lot of water through sweat, a good clothing option to spend time in the desert are light-colored long-sleeve shirts and pants.

Make sure to always drink plenty of water while you visit the desert. The general rule is to drink at least a gallon a day—and you should double that amount if you are going on long walks.

No matter what time of the year you visit this village (although I wouldn’t recommend summertime, it’s just way too hot then), you’ll always find plenty of cool things to do.

Here is a small list of super fun activities you can do in Merzouga, whether you are a budget traveler like us or whether you prefer to travel a bit more luxuriously. Since Merzouga is the perfect place to do many free activities, I really encourage you to try these first.

Free Things to do in Erg Chebbi and Merzouga

1. spend the night camping in the merzouga desert.

This is, in my opinion, one of the best free activities to do in Merzouga. For a lot of people, camping means hiking to the heart of a lush forest, perhaps near a pristine alpine lake or on the shores of a fast-flowing river.

Many imagine the desert as a vast and arid place where they would never pitch their tent. It’s true that the desert can be quite inhospitable, however, that’s not the whole picture.

I witnessed some of the most beautiful sunsets in my life right from the side of my tent in the desert of Merzouga. Seeing the sun gradually disappear between the dunes while it paints the arid landscape with warm shades of colors was quite a spectacle.

Dawn in the desert is also a beautiful sight, as the sun’s first rays begin to diminish the night chill and you feel the air warming up.

Camping in this Moroccan desert is a really fun experience but it does require a bit of planning. Make sure you have a good tent , a thick floor mattress ( the desert sand becomes cold as ice at night) and a warm sleeping bag .

The temperature in the desert cools down very quickly at night so if you want to sleep well it’s important to have warm layers under and over your body.

2. Walk to the highest dune of Erg Chebbi

The desert near Merzouga is known as Erg Chebbi. It’s a large area filled with sand dunes south of Merzouga.

Out of all the sand dunes that can be seen from the village, one particularly stands out. It’s much higher than all the rest of the desert and looks like a huge mountain of sand.

Reaching the top of this dune from the center of town takes about one hour . Be aware that climbing in the sand is not so easy, so bring a lot of water with you and avoid going there around noon.

The best moment to go there is right before sunset . Watching the sun slowly disappearing over the horizon from the top of this dune is a spectacular sight and makes the long and strenuous climb really worth it.

I recommend you bring a blanket with you if you go at that time as the temperature will drop very quickly the moment the sun disappears.

3. Watch the stars in the Sahara desert

There is no better place to admire the stars than in the desert itself.

Since Merzouga is a small town, the sand dunes around it receive almost no light pollution, making this a prime stargazing location .

I was amazed by how clear the milky way appeared above us and how bright and big the stars seemed to be. It was a really soothing experience to see millions of lights above us in all directions and the best part is that it was completely free .

If you would like to admire the stars through the lens and optics of a powerful telescope in Merzouga, there is a company that can help you do just that!!

This company is called Morocco Desert Stargazing and they organize awesome trips to the desert where you can watch the stars from their telescopes.

4. Watch camels and flamingos at the salt lake in Merzouga

As we were hitchhiking towards Merzouga, a few Moroccan drivers told us we would be able to see flamingos next to this southern village. Flamingos in the desert!? I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

I thought it would be impossible to find a lake (and birds) in such an arid location. But we found the lake and it was surrounded by herds of camels that were there to refresh themselves in the cool water.

The lake is called Dayet Srji and it’s located West of Merzouga. It can easily be reached by walking and it takes about 45 minutes to get there on foot from the village .

The lake is often dry in summer but when full (usually during winter), it attracts all kinds of migratory and desert birds including flamingos (unfortunately, we didn’t see them while we were there).

Dayet Srji is also a great place to watch the sunset and many Moroccan families will spend the winter evenings on the shores of this lake having a picnic with their loved ones.

Aside from the free things you can do independently, Merzouga offers a plethora of cheap activities that almost every budget traveler will love.

From sandboarding between the dunes to going for a ride in a 4×4 in the desert, we guarantee you won’t run out of cool things to do in this desert village.

5. Go on a sunset camel ride in the Sahara desert

There are various companies in Merzouga offering camel rides throughout the whole day and they are generally not too expensive.

For travelers who are fascinated with the ancient African camel caravans, this is the perfect opportunity to feel like a nomad for a couple of hours.

Although these treks are possible during the whole day, the best time is at sunset. Short camel rides to the desert that do not include overnight camping in a luxury camp are relatively cheap.

They start at around 17 USD per person for two hours with a private guide .

These short camel rides can also be super romantic so it’s a great activity to do if you are traveling with your significant other.

6. Go Sandboarding in the desert

If you want to discover the desert in a more “alternative” way and get covered in sand in the process, you should try sandboarding. Although this activity looks at first glance as something that could be dangerous, it’s actually super safe.

The sand dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga are really soft so you shouldn’t fear falling down. This is also a great activity to do with kids but make sure to cover your eyes with goggles to avoid getting sand in them.

Imagine the thrill of sliding down a dune at full speed while standing on a board. This is what we did in Merzouga with other travelers that were staying in our hostel and we had such an awesome day.

There are some tents near the entrance of the desert where you can rent boards for the price of 100 MAD for the whole day . There is also a shop directly on the main street in town next to the mosque where you can rent sandboards for 50 MAD per day .

Tip: Ask other travelers at your hostel if they want to join as this is an awesome activity to do with friends.

7. Enjoy a thrilling 4×4 ride in Erg Chebbi

Although this activity is not as traditional as riding a camel through the dunes, nothing beats the feeling of zooming up and down through the desert in an off-road vehicle.

The guides operating in Merzouga are all quite young but don’t let their youthful appearance fool you. These guys are all very experienced guides and they know the desert like the back of their hands.

It’s possible to go on a short 2-hour trip in a 4×4 or go on a full-day trip with a private guide to some nearby Berber villages and then to the dunes.

This day trip is a great choice because it gives you the chance to discover traditional Berber music and dance, and have the opportunity to try their instruments and learn to play some desert music of your own!

You’ll also get to visit a Berber family in their tent for lunch. You’ll learn how they live in their tents with their goats, sheep and working donkeys, as well as how to prepare a Berber pizza on the fire.

8. Listen to traditional Gnawa music in Khamlia

The Gnawa are an ethnic group inhabiting Morocco and they have some of the most beautiful traditional music you will hear while visiting the country.

The ancestors of the Gnawa people were brought from Central and West Africa as slaves through the Sahara desert in caravans that eventually arrived in the southeastern part of Morocco.

One village where you can discover this culture is Khamlia. It’s located just 7 km south of Merzouga. The town itself is quite small with a population of 390 people of Gnawa and Berber origins. Khamlia is located right next to the Erg Chebbi dunes.

It’s possible to reach the village by shared taxi or to drive there if you have your own car. There are two Gnawa musical groups that receive tourists and play music for them in Khamlia.

One of the two groups is called Bambara and the other group is called Pigeon des Sables. You can go anytime you want and you don’t need to reserve in advance. They have signs on the side of the road advertising their business and they will play for you even if you are alone.

Although they don’t ask for money, it’s a nice gesture to give them some if you enjoyed the music and you can also buy a CD to support them and help them continue sharing their culture with the world.

3. What to wear and bring on a trip to the Sahara desert in Merzouga

If you’re planning on spending some time in the Sahara desert and you are wondering what to wear and bring, remember this: when in Morocco do as the Moroccans do.

As the temperature varies a lot between day and night in the desert, it’s important to wear clothes that serve many purposes and that are above all very functional.

Here’s an overview of clothing and items to bring on a trip to the desert in Morocco.

A scarf will be your best piece of clothing in the Moroccan desert for various reasons.

First of all, you’ll be using it to cover and protect your face from the sun and the sand. If your scarf is long enough, it will also cover your shoulders.

If you don’t want to risk a sunstroke, remember to cover your head well. Another advantage of the scarf is that it can serve as a blanket if you want to lay down on the sand.

If you go on a tour with a Berber guide, you could also ask him to fold it and tie it on your head in the traditional way.

• Large light flowy pants

With the type of weather you will encounter in the desert, it’s much better to wear large flowy pants. These pants will dry quickly if you sweat and are not as heavy as jeans or as other types of pants.

The best pants are those that are made of cotton or linen, these materials are top choices for a breathable fabric to wear in hot weather conditions.

If you want to protect your eyes from the intense light that will be present throughout the day, it’s important to bring a good pair of sunglasses with UV protection .

These will also protect your eyes from the small dust particles the wind carries.

• Merino wool socks

Bringing Merino wool socks to the desert may sound a bit counter-intuitive but believe me, it gets super cold at night! I completely forgot to bring warm socks the first time I camped between the dunes in Merzouga and my feet were so cold I couldn’t sleep at all.

I recommend you bring more than one pair of these Merino wool socks to the desert, you’ll have warm feet and a good night of sleep.

• Warm sweater

As soon as the sun sets over the horizon, the Moroccan desert will become very cold so if you’re planning to spend the night in the desert make sure to bring a warm sweater or two.

Something I definitely have to warn you about: the sand literally gets everywhere! So watch out with the electronics you bring to the desert, including your phone and camera.

Luckily, Cynthia has the Lumix G90 , a camera with a weather-sealed and dustproof body, ideal for any outdoor situation!

However, she strongly suggests not to change lenses while you’re out in the desert. Use a lens that is versatile enough to capture the beautiful scenery (she used the   Panasonic Lumix G Vario Lens, 14-140MM, F3.5-5.6 for the photos in this post).

She also highly recommends that you clean your camera thoroughly once you’re back in the dust- and sand-free room of your hostel or hotel.

Spending the night in a luxury camp among the sand dunes of Erg Chebbi is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Before you go on a camel trek to the Sahara, you have to remember one thing: there is a huge difference between the budget desert camps and the luxury ones so make sure you know exactly what will be provided in your camp.

5. How to get to the Sahara desert near Merzouga

Getting to Merzouga is a lot easier now than it was 5 years ago. The road to get to the village is now completely paved.

Although there aren’t any trains going there yet, it’s possible to reach this desert village either by bus or in your own car. In this section, I’ll explain how to get there from nearby popular cities.

 How to get to Merzouga from Marrakech

Getting to merzouga from marrakesh by bus.

Traveling from Marrakesh to Merzouga by bus is quite a long journey (about 12 hours) so my best advice would be to cut this trip in two. I would suggest staying either in Ouarzazate for a day where you can visit an ancient mud Kasbah called Ait Ben Haddou or in a city called Tinerhir where you can visit stunning rock gorges.

Getting a bus out of Marrakech is really easy. You can find a Supratour or a CTM bus to Ouarzazate or Tinghir at the main Marrakesh bus station. This bus station is located almost adjacent to the train station in Marrakech .

The ticket prices for these 2 bus companies are almost the same and the CTM timetables and ticket prices can be found online . The trip from Marrakech to Ouarzazate takes 4 to 5 hours and this will usually include a break somewhere along the way while the trip to Tinerhir will take a bit more than 6 hours .

I suggest spending at least a full day in either one of these two places before continuing your journey south towards Merzouga. The bus stations with buses going in the direction of Merzouga in Tinghir and Ouarzazate are very easy to find. The Supratour bus from Ouarzazate to Merzouga costs 200 Moroccan Dirhams while the bus from Tinghir to Merzouga should cost a lot less.

Getting to Merzouga from Marrakesh by car

If you are traveling around Morocco with your own car or if you decide  to rent one , it means you can plan your own route, take breaks wherever and whenever you please and get to know the country in a much more intimate way.

To get from Marrakesh to Merzouga you will have to follow highway N9 and highway N10 . This route will take you to the cities of Ouarzazate and Tinghir, two stops I absolutely recommend.

How to get to Merzouga from Fez

Getting to merzouga from fez by bus.

There are a few bus stations in Fez where you can catch a bus towards Merzouga but the main one is called the Gare Routiere Boujloud. It is situated just on the side of the main peripheral highway( highway R501).

To get there exit the old city through the blue gate also called Bab Boujloud. From there walk across the square until you arrive at Bab Mahrouk. Cross this old gate and turn right into the downhill road, the bus station will be on the next access road to your left.

There are CTM and Supratour buses going from Fez to Merzouga but this bus journey is quite long. Some good options could be to stop halfway in Errachidia or to take an overnight Supratour bus from Fez to Merzouga and get some sleep on the bus.

There is a Supratour bus that departs from Fez at 8:30 pm and arrives in Merzouga at 7:15 am the next morning. All the prices and timetables can be found on the Supratour website .

Getting to Merzouga from Fez by car

If you have the luxury of traveling by your own car or if you are renting one , the road from Fez to Merzouga will take you along gorgeous olive plantations, beautiful deserts and is definitely a pleasant drive.

The driving distance between Fez and Merzouga is 469 km and it should take around 7 hours to reach the southern town.

Driving from Fez to Merzouga is a great idea if you have the time and if you want the freedom to stop along the road and take great pictures. To reach this desert village simply follow highway N13 towards the South.

6. Other cool places to visit near Merzouga

Merzouga is the ideal place to visit a small part of the Sahara desert. If you still want to explore more interesting parts of Morocco, Merzouga is not far from some other awesome Moroccan destinations.

1. Tinerhir and the Todra gorges

Tinerhir is a city in the region of Drâa-Tafilalet, Northwest of Merzouga. The city is famous for its huge rock gorges that receive avid rock climbers every year.

Tinerhir is also famous for its beautiful palm grove that covers more than 30 km and a handful of abandoned mud Kasbahs.

How to get to Tinerhir from Merzouga

Tinerhir is located 200 km North-West of Merzouga and driving between the two cities should take about 3 hours. It’s also possible to take a  Supratour bus  in the morning from Merzouga to get there.

If you have your own car, simply follow  highway N13 going North from the desert town until it reaches Rissani . From there, follow highway N12 west . Once you reach Alnif, take route 113 North and you will reach Tinerhir shortly after.

2. Dades Gorges

The Dades Gorges are a series of gorges carved out in the mountain by the Dades River. This river comes from High Atlas mountains and flows for about 350 km southwest before joining the Draa River at the edge of the Sahara.

It’s the ideal place for mountain hikes and rock climbing. It’s also located near Tinghir and the Todra gorges.

How to get to the Dades Gorges from Merzouga

To get there from Merzouga, you will have to first pass through Tinghir. Take highway N12 all the way to Tinghir and then continue west on highway N10 . Once you reach Boumalne Dades, take route R704 North .

The Dades Gorges are located 270 km Northwest of Merzouga and getting there will take about 4 hours.

3. Ait Ben Haddou

Ait Ben Haddou is an ancient fortified mud-brick village located between the Sahara and Marrakech. It’s a place known as a Ksar- the North African term for “Berber castle”.

This village is one of Morocco’s World Heritage Sites and was used as a set in the TV series Game of Thrones to portray the slaving city of Yunkai that Daenerys Targaryen laid siege to.

This old fortified village is located just 30 km north of Ouarzazate so it’s ideal to visit both and then continue towards Marrakech if you are coming from Merzouga.

How to get to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou from Merzouga

It’s possible to find a Supratour or a CTM bus that leaves Merzouga early in the morning and goes all the way to Ouarzazate. Ait Ben Haddou is located only 30 km north of this city so from there it’s easy to find a shared taxi.

If you have your own car, you will love the landscape as you drive there. Simply follow the highway N12 direction North-West until this highway becomes highway N9.

Follow it until you reach the city of Ouarzazate. This city is located 368 km North-West of Merzouga and reaching it should take about 5 hours. Once you’re there you can continue north for about 30 km to reach the fortified village.

A road car should be good to drive through the Atlas. As for driving through the desert, I don’t think everyone can just go with his or her car through the desert so you also don’t necessarily need to rent a 4×4. I hope this helps!

This is great comprehensive guide! Well done writing , better then many guide books. I like to add though that also big difference in the desert camps is to look at location!. Many camps are too close to the village and you may hear rooster cries in the morning. Others are too close to each other and you hear the drumming from other camp. Some are just by the road. Choose wisely your camp and also don’t stay just for the night.

Hi Laurent, we went to the desert during the winter (December – January). It gets quite cold at night, around 5 degrees, but if you stay at a luxury camp, they should definitely provide you with warm blankets! Enjoy your trip!

Merzouga is a village in the Sahara Desert in Morocco , on the edge of Erg Chebbi, a 50-km long and 5-km wide set of sand dunes that reach up to 350 m above the plain and 808 m above sea level.

Understand [ edit ]

Most visitors come here to take a camel safari into the dunes, and to get a taste of remote (but certainly tourism-influenced) Berber life.

The local population is mix of Arabs and Berber, which are generally welcoming and friendly. Although especially in and around Merzouga far more than usual people will display a touting behaviour and try you to sell a tour or a place to stay.

In general, it needs to be remembered that the dunes barely present an authentic Moroccan landscape. Many tourists come here, ride the camel and bring pictures back home, making people believe that this is what the desert looks like south. However, riding a camel through the dunes and staying in a tent there is nothing authentic about it—it is a touristy facade. Having said that the region is nevertheless beautiful and interesting, and even the regular stony desert is impressing in itself.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

Airports around with international flights are in Fez and Marrakech . From there you can take an intercity bus to Merzouga.

From Casablanca you can fly to Ouarzazate , then continue to Erfoud, Rissani and Merzouga.

There are also weekly flights into Errachidia , about 2 hours north of Merzouga by car.

By bus [ edit ]

Supratours buses from Marrakech and also from Fez have one daily trip each that end in Merzouga village, for 160 dirham. CTM only goes up until Erfoud and Rissani .

By grand taxi [ edit ]

From Rissani to Merzouga, a grand taxi or van is 12-15 dirham and goes about every 30 min. If you don't want to wait for other people to fill your grand taxi , pay 60 dirham. If you arrive before sunrise (if you come in the 06:00-07:00 bus from Fez ) you might have to pay up to 100 dirham for a grand taxi.

From Erfoud to Merzouga, a grand taxi is 25 dirham, every 1-2 hr.

If you're continuing on to one of the small villages nearby, such as Hassi Labied, the usual tourist price is a fairly steep 50 dirham (total, not per person) for the 5-km drive. Beware that overnight buses may sometimes arrive more than an hour early, putting you in Merzouga before sunrise. If this happens, you may find yourself with no cabs available, so be prepared to wait for someone to arrive.

Stay safe [ edit ]

Beware of guides in Rissani or Erfoud who offer to take you to Merzouga for 5 dirham each, but instead strand you at their auberge 20 km north of the village. If you decline their offers of camel rides and lodging, it is often quite difficult (and expensive) to make your way back to town.

By car [ edit ]

From Marrakech , drive east to Erfoud (2 days drive, stop for the night in or near Ouarzazate ). From Fez , drive south to Erfoud (1 day).

From Erfoud, continue south 14 km to Rissani , carry on through the village and follow the road southeast for 40 km to Merzouga. The road has been asphalted to Merzouga, and also to Taouz , a southern military border town (foreigners cannot cross here). The short access roads (1- or 2-km long) from the main road to the hotels alongside the sand dunes are normally not asphalted, but well maintained. There is now an asphalt road to Hassi Lybed, a smaller village about 4 km before Merzouga.

By tour [ edit ]

Tour operators can arrange 4x4s with driver/guides from Marrakech or Casablanca and back.

Get around [ edit ]

The only way to get around Merzouga is on foot. It's fairly small and easily walkable, but you'll likely want to avoid the midday heat.

See [ edit ]

Sunrise/sunset over the dunes. Folk dances and black G'naui music. Visits to villages near Merzouga inhabited by Senegalese musicians and dancers such as Khamlia can be arranged with some guides, ask at your hotel.

• Animals – See the ducks, and in early spring, flamingos, on the Dayet Srji salt lake, just west of Merzouga (according to the visitor information office in Hassilabied, there has been no water for at least the past 2 years, as of May 2018). There are many other species of birds (ruddy sheldrack and Kittllitz's plower during the spring migration, Tristram's desert warbler, the Egyptian nightjar, the Arabian buzzard and falcons), and the desert sparrows are unique to this region and can be seen all year round. There are also reptiles (Algerian sand lizards, Berber skinks and snakes), mammals such as gerbils, desert hedgehogs, field mice and desert foxes, and scarab beetles. In the morning, you can often see their tracks in the sand. Brown scorpions can occasionally be seen, but they come out at night and tend to avoid humans.

• Sunset on the dune . Even though there is not a single liquor store around to buy a decent wine for such a great show and view, it is still worth sitting on the Grand Dune and watching the surrounding area and sun set. ( updated Apr 2019 )
• Camp on the dune . Instead of dropping hundreds of dirham for a remote camping experience with a all so fake looking headscarf, why not just stay on top of the dunes yourself after the sun has set? Bring a sleeping bag, the sand is quite soft. Also, bring water and leave nothing but footprint. ( updated Apr 2019 )
• Hike the desert . From where Merzouga ends in the south it is basically just 5 km straight across the dune from west to east to reach the other side of the dune. If you feel bored, simply hike over to the other side, north by the Grand Dune, visit the setup camps on the other side and head back afterwards. Bring enough water! ( updated Apr 2019 )
• Boarding the dunes . This does not seem to have become a trend yet. Nevertheless, some accommodations have skiers for rent, try Dar Gamra. Otherwise, maybe you are lucky and find a snowboard. Or, a relative strong and smooth plastic "slide" that you can properly hold fix with your hands does the trick while going down the dune. Head for the Grand Dune with the steepest and highest slopes. Tours [ edit ]

Tour prices are highly negotiable, try 25% less than quoted and use the walking out trick. There is always more than enough companies. And always negotiate with the company directly, not through your accommodation or any arbitrary tout from the street.

• ATV & quad bikes . It is also possible to tour the dunes on ATVs. However, it is not as much fun as it might sound at first. You are basically following a guide and can not go bananas with your rented quad. If the latter is more of you taste, try to find a regular ATV rental and go on your own from there. On the way towards Merzouga there seem to be some regular rentals. Many tourist that come here with their own or rented motorbikes or 4WD go right into the dunes for a little fun. Some discourage this touring, but touring the dunes on a camel is neither more authentic nor worth more protection. From 400 dirham pp for a tour incl. guide (negotiable) . ( updated Apr 2019 )
• 4WD region tour . A 2 hour drive that includes a ride with a 4WD onto the dunes, visit to a local village (and probably shop of a cousin ), and a visit of the Dayet Srij lake with the impressive dunes in the back. 800 dirham per 2 hr (negotiable) . ( updated Apr 2019 )

Camel Safaris [ edit ]

Almost certainly the reason you came here in the first place. After taking you into the village to buy a proper head scarf (of course from their cousin for a special price) to protect you from the sun, you'll be thrown on a camel and lead off into the desert. (Good luck with your knees.) Meals, water, tents, etc should all be taken care of by your leader, but naturally you will have to confirm this when you do your negotiations beforehand and make sure you're very specific, and ask lots of questions. Speaking of negotiations, do your research before coming (ask other travelers in Marrakech, etc., for recommendations and for what they paid), and be prepared to bargain very hard(!)—the industry here is smooth and deceivingly vicious. On the first night, most groups end up at a pre-setup camp circle at the base of some large dunes, where the various tour operators have their "authentic" Berber tents set up. Dinner will be cooked here, often some music played, and you can frolic on the sand dunes under zillions of stars. If you're only on a 1-day trip, then you'll wake early, have some tea/breakfast, and head back before it gets hot. Others will hang out during the day, beating the heat in the tents all day, and either spend another night here or venture further out beyond the dunes and stay with a Berber family, where you'll then set out to return early on the third morning. A few operators have their own private camps that will offer a more remote experience, ask around if this is what you seek. This provides a more intimate setting with fewer people and noise where you can relax and enjoy the stars. Cost a little bit more but worth it. Also check to see if showers are included after the camel trek.

There is apparently just 31.099253 -4.016794 1 one ATM at the north entrance of Merzouga, which might not be very reliable. It is better to stack up cash in Erfoud or Rissani .

Eat [ edit ]

Most people eat meals at their lodge, but a few basic restaurants are scattered around the town if you are in need.

Stay healthy [ edit ]

For prepared food try to prefer places with enough customers. This is the desert and hygiene standards are lower than in the rest of Morocco.

Just head into the dunes and get a place on top of a dune or somewhere close to a tree to be safe from any vehicles. Even though at night probably no one is driving around, because it is too dangerous getting stuck. The desert here is relatively warm at night but a proper sleeping bag is necessary. Check the weather forecast for the temperatures.

Merzouga [ edit ]

Just near the village there are many small to larger estates made of mud which have decent rooms, running water, WiFi and breakfast available for prices starting from 170-300 dirham for a double.

The owner is relaxed and not too pressuring about selling you anything and you could just stay around, use that WiFi and wait for the heat to vanish in the afternoon. There are about 50 small hotels of varying categories along the sand dunes, and most of them own camels or can at least arrange your trip into the dunes.

Basically everyone in Merzouga is a tout, trying to sell you a camel, ATV or 4WD tour, or anything else that can be had a commission from. Be sure not to fall for any guy that has nothing to do with the actual tour, operator or accommodation.

Romantic liaisons [ edit ]

As with many places, be cautious with anyone who seems interested in romantic entanglements, as incidents of foreign women being charmed by locals and then discovering that the "romance" was merely a cover to obtain sex, money, or other services are not uncommon and increasing. This seems especially true for young foreign travellers. The cosy camp surroundings and maybe some wine does the rest.

Supratours buses travel from the center of Merzouga village north to Meknes, Fez and also over to Ouarzazate and then Marrakech. This is new and an affordable way to get in and out the desert. Pendant un séjour au Maroc , la découverte du  désert de Merzouga fait partie des activités absolument incontournables. Réputé pour ses impressionnantes dunes de l’ Erg Chebbi , ce désert particulièrement accessible, aux paysages magnifiques, est la promesse d’une parenthèse magique pendant un voyage au Maroc 🇲🇦 

Dans ce billet, je vous donne toutes les informations à connaître pour bien préparer votre découverte du désert de Merzouga.

Pourquoi visiter le désert de Merzouga ?

Le petit  village de Merzouga , qui est la porte d’entrée du désert du même nom, se trouve dans la partie est du pays, à quelques dizaines de kilomètres de la frontière algérienne. Merzouga est situé à environ 650 km à l’est et légèrement au sud de Marrakech,  à 350 km à l’est de Ouarzazate et à un peu plus de 450 km au sud de Fès . C'est un désert absolument magnifique à voir absolument lors d'une visite du Maroc.

L’accès à l’entrée du désert de Merzouga est particulièrement simple et se fait en empruntant la  route N13 . Pour aller au cœur du désert et notamment aux fameuses  dunes de Merzouga , il faut ensuite quitter la route goudronnée et emprunter une piste assez praticable, que même les bus peuvent suivre. Si vous faites un  road trip au Maroc , il faut que le désert de Merzouga soit sur votre bucket list !

Le véritable nom de ce désert est l’ Erg Chebbi , une zone d’environ 100 km², qui s’étend sur 20 km de long et 5 de large. Cette petite oasis du sud-est du  Haut Atlas , à proximité de la grande palmeraie du Tafilalet, est notamment connue pour abriter  les plus hautes dunes du Maroc , qui peuvent parfois s’élever jusqu’à 150 mètres de haut. C’est le lieu de vie des  Berbères Aït Atta , un ancien peuple nomade dont beaucoup de membres vivent aujourd’hui du tourisme.

Il s’agit donc d’une toute petite étendue désertique, à titre de comparaison, le  désert du Sahara  occupe une superficie de  9 millions de kilomètres carrés , dont 266 000 km² constituent le Sahara occidental que l’on retrouve au Maroc et dans les autres pays d’Afrique du Nord-Ouest. Pourtant, ces 100 km² sont déjà bien suffisants pour offrir aux visiteurs la sensation d’être en plein cœur d’un impressionnant désert qui s’étend à perte de vue.

D'autres déserts marocains sont plus souvent priorisés par les touristes, comme le désert d'Agafay qui fait aussi partie du  désert de Marrakech . Mais en dehors du Sahara occidental, Merzouga est la destination désertique la plus prisée au Maroc, devant Chegaga  qui est aussi très apprécié, mais bien plus difficile d’accès. De nombreuses  excursions  y mènent, et l’on trouve  beaucoup d’hébergements  pour y passer une nuit, notamment dans toute la zone qui longe le désert côté ouest.

Les choses à faire à Merzouga et aux alentours

Sorties à dos de dromadaire, randonnées, safaris, bivouac, 4x4… en plus de sa grande accessibilité et de sa beauté, ce qui fait la force du Désert de Merzouga, ce sont aussi les nombreuses choses que l’on peut y voir et y faire. Toutes les activités dont je vais vous parler dans la suite de ce billet peuvent être faites individuellement, mais la plupart du temps le désert de Merzouga se découvre à l’occasion d’une  excursion d’une ou plusieurs journées  avec différentes activités au programme.

Se balader à dos de chameau

Les dunes de l’Erg Chebbi , les plus hautes du pays, sont la grande attraction du désert de Merzouaga. Pour aller à leur découverte, plusieurs moyens sont proposés et le plus authentique est sans doute de faire une  excursion à dos de dromadaire , souvent appelés chameau d'Arabie, voire simplement chameau 🐪

Le temps de quelques heures, vous vous déplacerez dans le désert de la même manière que le font les Berbères depuis des temps immémoriaux. Les dromadaires sont des animaux particulièrement adaptés à se déplacer dans les conditions difficiles, grâce entre autres à leurs larges pieds dépourvus de sabots et qui ne s’enfoncent pas trop dans le sable, à leurs longs cils qui protègent leurs yeux de la poussière, et à leur bosse qui leur permet de réguler leur température et de stocker l’eau. On les appelle même les «  vaisseaux du désert  ».

Depuis le village de Merzouga ou depuis votre camp dans le désert, vous partirez en compagnie d’un  chamelier pour vivre une expérience marquante durant laquelle vous découvrirez des panoramas incroyables en vous laissant porter et en profitant de beaucoup de calme et de quiétude.

Avez-vous réservé vos activités dans le Sahara ? 🐫

Vous ne savez pas encore que faire au Maroc ? Ce splendide pays est doté de nombreuses merveilles de la nature, dont une partie du désert du Sahara . Ce désert est un incontournable pour tout voyageur voulant s'immiscer dans les paysages lunaires marocains. D'ailleurs, il existe beaucoup d' activités insolites au Maroc dans le désert, comme des balades en chameau d'Arabie, des randonnées, ou encore des spectacles de feu de culture locale ! Le désert du Sahara marocain est devenu une destination appréciée des touristes donc je vous conseille de réserver vos activités en avance !

Faire une randonnée dans le désert

Faire  un trek dans le désert de l’Erg Chebbi  est bien entendu une activité à ne surtout pas manquer pendant votre découverte du Maroc.

La randonnée est vraiment un excellent moyen de profiter de cette nature exceptionnelle, mais c’est une véritable aventure qui vous attend, cela nécessite donc un peu d’organisation. Vous aurez bien sûr besoin de bonnes chaussures de randonnée et de vêtement adaptés, mais il est également plus que recommandé de faire appel aux services d’un  guide spécialisé . Pratiquement toutes les excursions dans le désert de Merzouga, notamment depuis Marrakech, comprennent au moins une petite randonnée pour aller à la découverte des dunes.

Notez d’ailleurs que même pendant une sortie à dos de dromadaire, vous pourrez être amené à beaucoup marcher dans le sable, notamment pour grimper au sommet des dunes, car les animaux ne s’y aventurent généralement pas.

Admirer un coucher de soleil dans le désert

Le  soleil est indissociable du désert marocain. En tant que star, il ne quittera pas la scène sans vous avoir offert un grand spectacle. Voir le soleil se coucher sur les dunes du désert de Merzouga est un spectacle naturel vraiment magique. Les couleurs changeantes et les ombres qui s’étirent créent une ambiance vraiment unique, que vous n’êtes vraiment pas près d’oublier !

Beaucoup de balades dans le désert se concluent par un coucher de soleil , et bien sûr si vous passez la nuit dans le désert, cette activité sera forcément au programme et vous pourrez aussi assister au lever du soleil dès votre réveil 🌅

Faire une sortie en 4x4, en quad ou en buggy

Si vous avez envie d’aller à la découverte des dunes de l’Erg Chebbi d’une façon un peu plus remuante, c’est tout à fait possible. Depuis le village ou les campements, des guides proposent des  excursions en 4x4  en plein cœur du désert à travers les montagnes de sable.

Mais ce n’est pas tout, si vous aimez la conduite, vous pourrez aussi prendre les commandes d’un  quad  ou même d’un  buggy (après une rapide leçon de pilotage), pour une sortie mémorable dans les dunes sableuses et le désert rocheux, toujours en compagnie d’un guide. Ces engins maniables et tout-terrain sont parfaits pour accéder à des endroits très isolés où vous pourrez contempler des panoramas incroyables et avoir l’impression d’être vraiment seul au monde.

mon activité coup de ❤️ au désert de Merzouga

Si vous souhaitez passer une seule nuit dans le désert, je recommande de faire une randonnée en chameau d'Arabie et nuit à l'Erg Chebbi ! Tout commence à l'hôtel Kasbah Mohayut, le point de rendez-vous. Vous serez conduit en jeep jusqu'au parc de chameau. Vous monterez sur le dos de votre chameau jusqu'aux dunes de l'Erg Chebbi. Un guide local vous accompagnera le long de cette activité. Vous aurez l'occasion de manger un tajine marocain et d'assister à un superbe spectacle de percussions. La nuit se passera sur un campement en plein désert ! Vous pourrez aussi faire du sandboard pendant cette excursion. En plus de découvrir des traditions marocaines, vous optimiserez votre temps et votre argent. Comptez environ 63 € par personne, hébergement, petit déjeuner  et dîner compris 😊

Faire du sandboard et du kitesurf dans le désert

Envie d’une activité sportive, originale et forte en sensations ? Que diriez-vous de  surfer sur les dunes de l’Erg Chebbi  ? Ici, vous n’aurez certainement pas besoin d’un anorak, d’un bonnet et de gants, mais vous pourrez sans aucun doute ressentir d’excellentes sensations de glisse sur les pentes de sable.

Le  sandboard (ou surf sur sable), dérivé du snowboard, est une activité de plus en plus populaire à Merzouga. Très accessible, même pour les débutants, c’est vraiment un sport que je vous conseille d’essayer pendant une excursion dans le désert marocain.

Mais il est aussi possible de faire du  Kitesurf sur le sable (Sand Kiteboarding), pour non seulement dévaler les dunes sur une planche, mais aussi se laisser porter par les vents du désert et faire d’impressionnants sauts. En plus d’être vraiment très fun et grisantes, ces deux activités sont parfaitement respectueuses de l’environnement.

Découvrir la culture locale lors d'une excursion organisée

Pour beaucoup de voyageurs, le moyen le plus rapide et le plus pratique pour organiser une visite du désert de Merzouga, c’est d’opter pour une  excursion au départ d’une grande ville marocaine . On trouve tout un tas d’agences de voyages et de prestataires qui organisent ce type de circuit dans le désert. Par exemple, Marrakech est le point de départ de nombreuses activités. Si vous êtes perdu et ne savez pas encore  que faire à Marrakech , j'ai rédigé un autre article sur mon blog. 

Il s’agit d’expériences « tout en un », qui incluent le  trajet aller et retour  depuis une grande ville, différentes  activités sur place (randonnée, balade à dos de dromadaire, coucher de soleil, 4x4…), les repas  et une  nuit dans un camp dans le désert .

Pouvoir se laisser guider sans avoir à se soucier de quoi que ce soit est vraiment un avantage, surtout que vous aurez bien d’autres choses à organiser pendant ce séjour au Maroc . Les agences qui proposent ces circuits dans le désert ont beaucoup d’expérience, elles savent prendre en charge les voyageurs et proposent des programmes spécialement conçus pour leur proposer les activités et les découvertes les plus emblématiques.

Les deux principales villes depuis lesquelles ces circuits partent sont  Marrakech  et  Fès . Elles sont respectivement à une dizaine d’heures et à environ 8 heures de route de Merzouga, il s’agit donc de circuits qui durent généralement  deux ou trois jours . Sur le trajet, d’autres visites peuvent être prévues, comme notamment la découverte des  montagnes de l’Atlas , du ksar d’ Aït-Ben-Haddou  et de la  Vallée des Roses , la superbe vallée de  l’Oued Dadès qui s’étend au pied du Hat-Atlas.

Partir en excursion dans le désert de Merzouga depuis Marrakech

Depuis Marrakech, je vous conseille un circuit de 3 jours dans le désert de Merzouga , avec promenade en chameau d'Arabie, randonnée et bien d'autres surprises encore. Cette excursion est très populaire auprès des visiteurs. Elle vous permettra de découvrir le désert du Sahara marocain sous différents angles !

Vous serez pris en charge à votre logement à Marrakech pour ensuite embarquer dans un minibus ou monospace, accompagné de votre chauffeur / guide. Vous visiterez en premier lieu le ksar d'Aït-ben-Haddou , puis les Gorges du Dadès où vous passerez la nuit dans une chambre d'hôtel et pourrez admirer un superbe coucher de soleil. Ensuite, vous vous dirigerez vers les gorges du Todra et les fameuses dunes de Merzouga. Une belle balade à dos de dromadaire vous attendra pour profiter de ces magnifiques dunes de l' Erg Chebbi . Vous dormirez dans un campement dans ce paysage lunaire à couper le souffle. Après ces 3 jours d'excursion, vous serez conduit à votre logement à Marrakech.

C'est une superbe occasion pour découvrir la culture locale sur les pas des Bédouins, mais aussi la gastronomie du pays. Comptez 108 € par personne, hébergement, petit déjeuner et dîner compris 🤩

Choisir un circuit vers le désert de Merzouga au départ de Fès

Vous séjournez dans le nord du Maroc et vous ne savez pas encore que faire à Fès ? Alors, vous pourrez faire le choix de partir dans le désert de Merzouga depuis cette ville. Dans ce cas, je vous recommande une excursion de 2 jours dans le désert . Vous serez pris en charge à Fès par votre guide local.

Le premier jour de cette excursion de 2 jours, vous aurez l'opportunité de voir la station de ski d'Ifrane et la forêt de cèdres d'Azrou où des singes vivent ! Puis l'ascension du Moyen Atlas démarrera, et vous ferez une pause à Midelt pour déjeuner. Vous admirerez la superbe oasis de palmiers de Ziz . Les chameaux d'Arabie vous attendront à Merzouga pour arpenter les dunes de l' Erg Chebbi ! Vous passerez la nuit dans un camp berbère au beau milieu du désert. Le second jour sera consacré au chemin du retour vers Fès, après avoir dégusté un petit-déjeuner marocain. 

Le prix de cette excursion en petit groupe depuis Fès est de 135 € par personne, hébergement, petit déjeuner et dîner compris 😉

Passer la nuit dans le désert de Merzouga

Pour profiter au maximum d’une découverte du désert de Merzouga, je vous recommande vraiment d’y passer  au moins une nuit . Cela vous permettra d’avoir plus de temps, mais c’est surtout le seul moyen pour profiter pleinement de l’expérience, c’est-à-dire d’assister à un coucher et à un lever de soleil dans le désert , mais aussi de passer la soirée et la nuit dans un authentique  campement dans le désert , en profitant au passage d’un dîner traditionnel et de quelques autres activités (musique traditionnelle, spectacle de danse, observation des étoiles, dégustation de thé, tatouage au henné…).

On trouve plusieurs camps dans le désert de Merzouga, ils sont situés plus ou moins près des dunes et on y accède généralement en 4x4 ou à dos de dromadaire. Pour passer une nuit dans le désert de Merzouga , vous pouvez opter pour une excursion où vous serez pris en charge de A à Z, ou directement réserver une nuit dans un campement. Pour cela, je vous recommande d’utiliser une plateforme de réservation comme  Booking , où sont répertoriés les meilleurs camps.

La plupart du temps, ce sont des  bivouacs constitués de tentes qui sont placées autour d’un grand feu de camp. Ces tentes abritent parfois de véritables lits et parfois de simples matelas avec des couvertures. Certains camps disposent de tout le confort nécessaire, avec notamment des toilettes et des douches. D’autres camps sont bien plus rudimentaires, certains sont même prévus pour dormir à la belle étoile. Peut-être qu'après avoir dormi dans l'un des chics riads de Marrakech , l'expérience vous tentera !

Où dormir dans le désert de Merzouga ?

Voici trois exemples de camps dans le désert de Merzouga qui sont particulièrement appréciés des voyageurs :

• Nomad Bivouac  est un petit camp très abordable, avec des installations assez sommaires, mais très authentiques, qui est situé à 2 km du village aux portes du désert et qui propose des plats traditionnels, des promenades à dos de chameau et des excursions en 4x4. Les prix démarrent à  10 € la nuit pour dormir dans une tente 2 places.

• Desert Berber Fire-Camp   est   un camp bien situé au cœur des dunes, équipé de tentes spacieuses, et d’un restaurant, où toutes les activités emblématiques sont proposées. Comptez à partir de 30 € la nuit pour 2 personnes.
•   Sahara Tours Luxury Camp  est également un campement au cœur des dunes de l'Erg Chebbi. Il offre des chambres très confortables avec des coins salon et repas. La vue sur le désert est extraordinaire. Les prix commencent à  51 € .

• La Kasbah Mohayut se trouve aux pieds des hautes dunes de Merzouga, dans un cadre paisible. Ce sera l'endroit idéal si vous cherchez un séjour alliant détente, découverte et aventure ! Vous y retrouverez un restaurant proposant une cuisine berbère, des terrasses où vous pourrez admirer le ciel étoilé, une piscine et des chambres et des suites spacieuses et confortables. Pour une nuit, comptez à partir de 65 € pour une chambre double.

Que voir autour du désert de Merzouga ?

Pendant votre séjour dans la région de Merzouga, vous pourrez en profiter pour faire d’autres activités et découvrir d’autres sites d’intérêt qui sont situés aux alentours du désert :

• Le lac Dayet Srij , situé au pied des dunes de l’Erg Chebbi à 4 km de Merzouga, est un site naturel magnifique, très apprécié pour ses panoramas et l’exceptionnelle concentration d’oiseaux qu’on peut y voir entre novembre et mai (flamants roses, canards, cigognes, hirondelles…)
• Khamlia est un village qui se trouve à tout juste 7 km de Merzouga. Surnommé « village noir », il est habité par les Gnawas, des Bambaras originaires de l’Afrique subsaharienne et descendants d’esclaves.

• Dans le  désert de Hamada  tout près de Khamlia se trouvent les  mines abandonnées , qui étaient exploitées par les Français pour le quartz et le khôl jusqu’en 1965. De nos jours, quelques mineurs marocains travaillent encore ici de manière artisanale. En plein cœur de cette partie particulièrement inhospitalière du désert marocain, les installations abandonnées donnent au décor un aspect post-apocalyptique.
• L’ Oriental Désert Express  est un train qui traverse une partie du Maroc sur un peu plus de 300 km et qui relie  Oujda  à  Bouarfa  en passant au cœur de paysages désertiques vraiment sublimes. Il circule deux fois par semaine, avec sur sa route deux arrêts au niveau de Aïn Benimathar et Tendrara. Le voyage se fait très tranquillement, à bord de wagons climatisés, c’est un excellent moyen de découvrir le désert marocain autrement.

Quand partir à la découverte du désert de Merzouga ?

Pour découvrir le désert de Merzouga ou les autres déserts marocains, mieux vaut privilégier la période où il fait plus frais, c’est-à-dire  entre mi-octobre et mi-mai . Si possible, ne faites pas cette visite pendant les périodes des vacances scolaires, pour éviter le flot de touristes.

Les mois de juillet et aout sont à éviter , car il fait vraiment très chaud à cette période de l’année. Partir dans le désert en plein été n’est vraiment pas une bonne idée, au point même que vous aurez probablement du mal à trouver une excursion ou un guide pendant ces deux mois. Bien préparer une excursion dans le désert de Merzouga

Pour terminer ce billet, voici une petite liste de conseils et de recommandations qui pourront vous aider à faire de cette expérience un souvenir marquant :

• Si possible, passez  une nuit au moins dans le désert. Dormir dans le désert de Marrakech est une expérience vraiment inoubliable et unique que je vous recommande à 100%.
• Les écarts de températures entre le jour et la nuit sont très importants dans le désert. Même si les camps sont équipés de couvertures et que vous passerez du temps autour du feu, prévoyez des  vêtements assez chauds  et coupe-vent pour profiter au mieux de la soirée.
• Il est possible de louer une voiture pour se rendre au désert de Merzouga, mais le trajet est long et s'adresse aux conducteurs expérimentés ! C'est bien différent de rouler sur des étendues de sable. Je vous conseille de rechercher un location de véhicule sur  RentalCars .
• Protégez-vous bien du soleil, pour cela, il est impératif de prendre un chapeau  ou une  casquette , des  lunettes de soleil  et de la  crème solaire  avec un très fort indice de protection. Les casquettes « sahariennes », qui protègent la nuque, sont parfaites, vous pouvez aussi porter un chèche pour protéger votre visage du sable. Prévoyez aussi des vêtements amples, respirants et couvrants. 
• Le soir venu, après une longue journée à porter des chaussures de marche, vous serez surement bien content d’avoir pensé à prendre des  sandales .
• Même si la randonnée pédestre n’est pas forcément au programme de votre découverte du désert, prévoyez de bonnes  chaussures de marche montantes , pour éviter au maximum que le sable s’y engouffre.
• Généralement, tout le matériel nécessaire est fourni par les organisateurs, mais mieux vaut être prévoyant et emporter notamment une gourde , un  couteau , une  lampe frontale , du  sérum physiologique  (en cas de sable dans les yeux) et un petit  sac poubelle pour pouvoir récupérer tous vos déchets et laisser le désert dans le même état qu’à votre arrivée.

Nos 2 idées de voyage « Merzouga »

Non loin de la frontière algérienne, le village de Merzouga est la porte d’entrée vers le plus grand erg marocain, l’erg Chebbi. Ses hautes dunes, dont certaines atteignent 150 m, font partie des attractions touristiques majeures lors d’un voyage dans le Sud marocain . La couleur rouge de leur sable n’est pas sans rappeler les magnifiques dunes de Sossusvlei en Namibie. Particulièrement magnifiques au lever ou au coucher du soleil, les dunes de Merzouga se découvrent à pied ou à dos de dromadaire. L’idéal étant de bivouaquer dans les dunes pour admirer la nuit étoilée du Sahara. Inoubliable !

Complètement gaga des dunes de Merzouga

Dans notre article précédent, nous nous étendions avec moult détails sur notre road trip d’une semaine depuis Marrakech , mais nous restions flous comme des mirages à propos de notre étape la plus à l’est, le désert de Merzouga. C’est que les dunes du Sahara nous ont tellement plu qu’elles méritaient bien un article à elles toutes seules. Enfilez vos chèches et suivez-nous à leur découverte !

Les vingt derniers kilomètres avant Merzouga ne laissent rien présager. Le terrain, plat à 360° et parsemé de cailloux noirs, ressemble à un vieux bitume oublié. Nous nous demandons si quelqu’un n’aurait pas passé un coup d’aspirateur sur le sable du désert.

Soudain, des bosselettes orangées se devinent à l’horizon. Rapidement, elles se hissent, grandissent, grossissent jusqu’à envahir tout notre espace visuel.

Après avoir croisé, les jours précédents, des dizaines de panneaux « attention dromadaires » sans un seul camélidé en liberté, voilà que nous tombons sur un troupeau entier.

Pas farouches, ils se laissent approcher et nous offrent leurs meilleures grimaces. Surtout lorsqu’ils mastiquent à s’en disloquer la mâchoire. En même temps, les seules douceurs qu’ils trouvent à se mettre sous la dent dans cette pampa déshydratée sont des arbustes avec des épines de deux centimètres. Mâchez, les amis, mâchez.

Il s’agira de notre unique rapprochement avec des dromadaires. Nous décidons, plutôt que d’explorer les dunes sur leurs bosses comme cela se fait beaucoup par ici, d’utiliser nos propres pattes, à notre propre rythme. Et tant pis si nous ne campons pas dans une tente.

Pour cela, nous dégotons un beau petit hôtel situé exactement à la lisière de la mer de sable. C’est le cas de le dire, le sable est au pied de la porte. Regardez plutôt !

Un thé de la bienvenue plus tard, il est temps de sortir explorer notre jardin. Euh… le désert. Avant de nous lancer, nous demandons par précaution au gérant de l’hôtel s’il est déconseillé d’y marcher seuls. C’est à peine s’il comprend notre question : – Mais non, au contraire. Il suffit de marcher… où bon vous semble ! – Nous ne risquons pas de nous perdre, de nous enliser, de tomber sur un dromadaire enragé ? – Rien de tout cela.

Alors c’est parti ! Nous remplissons nos gourdes à ras bord, juste au cas où, et visons la plus haute des dunes.

Il faut savoir qu’en milieu de journée le soleil endort les reliefs et jaunit les paysages. À l’inverse, en matinée et en fin d’après-midi, les rayons obliques réveillent les ombres, dramatisent les contrastes et donnent toute leur splendeur aux dunes orangées.

Mais oh ! Que sont ces petits cailloux ronds qui tapissent le sol ?

La confirmation se trouve derrière nous. Quelques caravanes de touristes se mettent justement en route sur nos traces et sur leurs traces de la veille, donc.

Nous n’avons plus du tout peur de nous perdre, il suffit de monter sur une dunette pour apercevoir la ville et retrouver son chemin.

Nous découvrons que ces dunes ne s’abordent pas dans n’importe quel sens. Le vent pétrit l’une des deux pentes tel un rouleau compresseur et la rend facilement praticable, tandis que l’autre face tombe abruptement et se désagrège sous nos pas. En comprenant cela, nous doublons notre vitesse de croisière.

Tel le sable, le silence est d’or. Les ombres poursuivent leur séance d’étirements en des courbes irréelles, hypnotisantes.

Nous nous écartons des caravanistes pour démarrer l’ascension de la dune repérée. Elle culmine, paraît-il, à cent cinquante mètres au-dessus du niveau de la mer-zouga.

Nos doigts de pieds se sentant étrangement à l’étroit, nous profitons de la pause au sommet pour retirer nos chaussures. S’en écoule l’équivalent de deux ou trois thés à la menthe.

Nous attendons ici le coucher de soleil, avant de dévaler les pentes jusqu’à notre chambre.

Les dunes s’endorment et la voute céleste prend le relais. Le ciel du désert est fabuleux, percé d’autant d’étoiles qu’il y a de grains de sable sous nos pieds.

Mais nous n’avons qu’une idée en tête, foncer à nouveau dans les dunes pour le lever du soleil. L’hiver a ses avantages : le soleil n’émerge pas avant 8h, ce qui rend le réveil plus agréable qu’en saison chaude. La fraîcheur nocturne s’oublie vite après quelques enjambées de dunes. Et quelles dunes !

Les couleurs matinales sont d’une douceur sans pareille.

Le rêve se poursuit avec notre petit déjeuner, dégusté les pieds dans le sable qui se réchauffe doucement sous les premiers rayons. Les crêpes marocaines et le jus d’oranges pressées n’ont jamais été aussi savoureux.

Comme nous restons une deuxième nuit sur place, une journée entière s’offre à nous. La température remonte timidement jusqu’à vingt-cinq degrés. Dites-vous qu’elle peut atteindre le double en plein été. D’ailleurs, nos hôtes nous expliquent qu’ils ferment l’établissement et prennent des vacances loin d’ici en juillet et août, le temps que le soleil se calme.

Au détour d’une conversation, ils nous racontent la recette locale pour guérir de tout, et en particulier des rhumatismes : se faire ensevelir dans le sable jusqu’au cou durant plusieurs heures, avec un petit parasol, une bouteille et une paille. Ce n’est pas une blague, des Marocains viennent de l’autre bout du pays pour un bain de sable.

Si vous tentez l’expérience, choisissez quelqu’un en qui vous avez confiance…

En cherchant une idée de sortie dans les alentours, nous découvrons un lac : le Dayet Srij. Oui oui, un lac, à trois kilomètres seulement des dunes. Il n’existe cependant qu’en hiver. Et encore, s’il a plu, car certaines années ne voient pas une goutte tomber. Pour l’atteindre, nous repérons une piste à peu près carrossable sur Google Maps. Et l’eau est bien là !

Les poissons ne doivent pas être nombreux à oser vivre ici. En revanche, une nuée d’oiseaux caquette un vacarme de tous les diables au-dessus de nos oreilles, tandis que nous repérons un peu plus loin ce qui ressemble à des flamants blancs.

Le soir, nous retournons nous amuser dans les dunes, puis… au revoir Merzouga, nous reprenons la route !

Notre avis sur Merzouga

Nous nous demandions s’il valait la peine d’avaler autant de kilomètres pour nous retrouver dans un paysage aride, probablement monotone et déjà vu maintes fois en photos. Oui ! Tellement ! Ces dunes rejoignent sans aucun doute le « top 3 » de nos plus belles expériences de voyage et nous en avons adoré chaque seconde.

Conseils pratiques pour explorer les dunes de Merzouga

Les différentes façons de profiter des dunes de l’erg chebbi.

Plusieurs options sont envisageables, nous allons tâcher de vous les expliquer :

• L’expérience du bivouac au milieu des dunes : il s’agit de la solution retenue par la majorité des voyageurs. Vous n’aurez aucun mal à trouver une agence pour vous faire vivre cette expérience puisque le désert est parsemé de campements. Les plus sommaires peuvent se dégoter directement sur place auprès de rabatteurs, mais il faudra certainement marchander pour obtenir un bon tarif. En réservant en ligne, vous éliminez l’étape du marchandage et vous pouvez vous rassurer en lisant les avis des clients précédents. Surtout, vous pouvez choisir le niveau de confort qui vous convient, du simple sac de couchage à la tente grand luxe. Une fois la réservation faite, les gérants vous indiqueront un lieu de rendez-vous durant l’après-midi et un guide viendra vous y chercher, soit à dos de dromadaire, soit en 4×4. • Dormir dans un hôtel et marcher seuls dans les dunes : c’est la solution qui nous convenait le mieux. Comme nous ne souhaitions ni monter sur un dromadaire, ni utiliser un 4×4, nous avons organisé notre visite seuls, sans passer par une agence. Les hôtels sont nombreux dans le village de Merzouga même, mais les dunes n’y sont pas très calmes, sans cesse traversées par des quads, 4×4 et dromadaires. Essayez de privilégier comme nous le village d’Hassilabied, 7km plus au nord. Nous avons adoré notre hôtel, le Dar Lola (~73€) i avec peu de chambres, une ambiance paisible et des gérants au top. D’autres hôtels sont installés dans le voisinage et bénéficient de la même localisation idéale, du côté Est de la route, face aux dunes. Regardez par exemple chez Kasbah Mohayut (~70€) i ou Riad Kasbah Aiour (~90€) i .
• Dormir à l’hôtel et faire des excursions de quelques heures : si marcher ne vous intéresse pas, il est facile de trouver des guides au dernier moment pour une heure ou deux de dromadaire au coucher ou lever du soleil. Soit en rejoignant un groupe, soit avec un guide privé. Vous n’irez pas loin, à peu près là où nous avons marché, mais rien ne sert d’aller tout au fond du désert puisque les dunes sont déjà superbes à moins de 500m du rivage.
• Enfin, peut-être souhaiterez-vous louer un quad. C’est le choix de certains voyageurs et, pour tout vous avouer, nous les avons maudits pour le vacarme qu’ils faisaient. Le plaisir d’une personne gâche celui de cinquante autres personnes à la ronde. Si vous en louez, évitez au moins de rouler près des piétons, le désert est suffisamment vaste.

Combien de nuits rester à Merzouga

Nous avons choisi de passer deux nuits à Merzouga, ce qui nous a permis de prendre le temps d’apprécier l’un des plus beaux lieux du Maroc et de nous reposer des kilomètres de voiture. Nous avions un pincement au cœur en repartant, mais concrètement, nous n’avons rien fait de spécial en restant une deuxième nuit. Donc si vous êtes pressés, vous pouvez arriver au cours de l’après-midi, sortir dans les dunes au coucher puis au lever du soleil et repartir après le petit déjeuner.

Merzouga ne manque pas de restaurants, mais nous n’en avons testé aucun car nous étions un peu loin. Si vous logez à Hassilabied, nous avons apprécié le tout petit Snack Mustapha , sur la place principale : sandwichs, omelettes, frites, soupe de haricots rouges… et avec un peu de chance, le gérant se souviendra de la recette de guacamole que nous lui avons enseignée !

Nous avons aussi pris l’un des dîners à notre hôtel, la plupart des établissements en proposent.

Quand venir à Merzouga

Explorer les dunes de Merzouga en hiver était une belle expérience. Il ne faisait pas chaud la journée, juste un peu frais le matin. Dès le début du mois de juin, il nous semble que les températures sont déjà trop élevées. Elles atteignent des records difficilement supportables en juillet et août, avant de redevenir acceptables en octobre.

On a juste vu des petits scarabées et on n’a pas entendu parler de scorpions. Tant mieux pour tous ceux qui campent sur le sable !

On ne s’attendait vraiment pas à ce que ce soit si beau !

L’erg Chebbi est magique je suis bien d’accord. Une autre façon intéressante de le découvrir est d’en faire le tour en 4×4, le temps d’oublier les installations trop touristiques de Merzouga.

Ça doit être impressionnant, en effet. On imagine que vous n’avez pas croisé beaucoup de monde de l’autre côté de la bande de sable !

Ah non, pas beaucoup de monde ! Par contre j’ai souvenir d’avoir crevé. Mais pas de problème comme on dit au Maroc : ma kaïn mouchkil ! Et puis le souvenir de la conduite dans le sable !

Mais qu’est ce que c’est beau ces ombres qui s’étirent. Ce voyage au Maroc donne envie, mais j’avoue avoir très hâte de voir votre avis sur la Tunisie qui me semble moins connue.

Ce n’était pas le même genre mais on a fait de belles découvertes aussi en Tunisie ! Les récits arrivent (encore quelques mois, on n’est pas rapides!).

Oh la la qu’est ce que c’est beau ! C’en est presque irréel ! En tout cas encore une fois à la lecture de vos articles j’ai juste envie de prendre un billet d’avion et de faire exactement le même trajet que vous !

T’as vu ! Ça restera l’un des paysages les plus beaux de notre vie !

On aurait aimé le faire à pieds pour n’en pas monter les dromadaires mais on n’en pensait pas que c’était vraiment Possible alors on a opté pour le bivouac. Puis j’avoue que fin mai a 40 degrés on avait trop chaud pour marcher tout seul dans le Sable 🙁

Nous aussi on a mis du temps à comprendre que c’était possible, c’est une solution tellement simple qu’on ne l’envisage pas 🙂 Mais c’est sûr que fin mai, il doit commencer à faire bien chaud…

Votre blog est magnifique et les photos ne font que conforter notre souhait de voyage au Maroc en avril prochain ! Wouhaa!!! Nous sommes 2 familles avec 5 ados et souhaiterions couper notre semaine en 2, avec par exemple, 3 jours sur Marrakech puis le reste dans le désert, comme Merzouga par exemple. Pensez-vous qu’on peut organiser ce séjour à notre guise et seuls ? Car aucune agence ne nous propose cette formule. Nous sommes en contact avec un guide mais il semble nous proposer plutôt du trek en montagne

Bonjour Anne Sophie, À notre avis il n’y a aucun besoin d’agence pour réaliser ce que vous prévoyez. Le Maroc est un pays très facile à visiter en indépendant, où tout se déroule sans encombre. Pour Marrakech, réservez simplement votre hôtel, ensuite la ville se visite facilement avec un guide du Routard, un Lonely Planet (ou des blogs voyage) sous le coude ! Bonsoir, Nous sommes un couple partant pour Marrakech au mois de février 2020. Dans l’élaboration d’une escapade direction Erg Chebbi, nous avons casi opté pour le même chemin que vous avez effectué. Nous avons donc lu avec grand intérêt votre article passionnant, clair et riches en informations. Merci beaucoup pour ce partage de qualité. Comme vous, nous ne sommes pas tellement emballés par monter sur un dromadaire (et dormir en bivouac au mois de février) … mais voulons admirer à tout pris les dunes. Nous pensions cela impossible, nous sommes donc ravi de vous lire. Je me suis renseignée sur votre auberge Dar Lola, mais le tarif proposé sur leur site semble le double de celui que vous évoquez (125€ au lieu de 54€). Les avez-vous contacter directement ? Si celle ci ne possède plus de chambre, d’autres auberges se situent tout proche, avez-vous souvenir de mauvais retour de l’une d’elle ? Merci encore pour votre travail.

Bonsoir Marion, Zut en effet, ils ont craqué avec les prix ! C’est sur Booking qu’on avait eu le tarif de 54€ mais c’était probablement un prix de lancement, on va mettre nos infos à jour. On n’a pas eu d’échos des hôtels voisins mais on voit qu’il y en a plusieurs bien notés autour. Choisissez un logement du côté Est de la route, comme le Dar Lola, pour être vraiment face aux dunes. En tout cas, on vous confirme que tout faire seuls et à pied est très facile, et complètement magique !

Bonsoir, Merci pour votre retour Je ne sais pas si c’est le fait d’en avoir parlé ici … mais cela a baissé à 82€ la nuit 🙂 mais cela reste tout de même plus que ce que l’on peut prétendre dépenser pour une nuit. Je vais alors regarder à proximité, face aux dunes.

Ah, ça mes rappelle de bons souvenirs. Nous n’avions pas été à Merzouga, mais à chegaga… tout à pied en trek. Enfin, ça me donne envie d’y retourner avec les enfants, mais y a trop d’endroits chouettes !! Enfin, en hiver pour le désert ou l’anti-atlas, c’est vraiment bien !!

À pied, ça doit être génial aussi ! Cette région est tellement différente de ce qu’on a l’habitude de voir par chez nous que tout devient incroyable. On imagine que ça doit faire le même effet à des habitants du désert qui viendraient découvrir la Normandie !

Nous avons eu un touareg du Niger qui est venu en Normandie, ce qui l’a surpris le plus : les portes qui s’ouvrent toutes seules dans les aéroports… Mais surtout les grands arbres de la forêt de Brotonne, la mer ! et ce qui l’a le plus surpris… le fait qu’on mette nos « vieux » en maison de retraite.

Hyper intéressant ! On a bien du mal à imaginer l’effet que ça doit faire quand on presque toujours connu ça !

Merci pour ce chouette article ! Je suis complètement rassurée grâce à vous, avec mon conjoint nous ne souhaitons pas du tout monter sur un dromadaire ni aller en 4×4 avec d’autres touristes. Nous partons pour 3 semaines dans une semaine, on a trop hâte et on est ravi de savoir qu’on va pouvoir se balader en autonomie 🙂

En fait, je cherchait de l’info sur les dunes de Merzouga car je dois participer à un trek ( Rose Trip) au Maroc et j’hésite en raison de la difficulté du terrain et les risques de fortes chaleurs. Le trek est prévu fin octobre 2021. Je crais aussi la présence de serpents, araignées ou scorpions. Mais j’avoue que vos photos m’ont donné envie de découvrir ces paysages. Merci

Beau projet ! Il est possible qu’il fasse encore un peu chaud en journée à la fin octobre. Qu’en disent les organisateurs du trek ? On n’a croisé aucun de ces animaux effrayants, ou alors on ne les a pas remarqués ! On espère que ce sera pareil pour toi. Et oui les paysages de Merzouga sont incroyables, ils doivent aider à trouver la force d’avancer dans le sable.

Merci pour votre blog et pour vos superbes photos. Je suis Belge d’origine marocaine et je vais a Merzoga chaque année depuis 2009, c’est un endroit magique ou je me resources. Pour les bains de sable, on vous enterre toujours a l’horizontale sans couvrir le torse, la température du sable étant très élevée, ça peut être très dangereux. Généralement on ne dépasse jamais les cinq minutes enterrées dans le sable, moi je conseille pour les amateurs entre 1 et 2 minutes maximum mais après il faut impérativement se couvrir et rester dans une pièce a l’abri du vent pendant minimum 90 minutes (vous allez beaucoup transpirés) et finir par une douche d’eau tiède. Je ne sais pas si ça guérit vraiment de quoi que ce soit mais après ce bain je me sens léger et en pleine forme et plus de mal de dos ni de courbatures pendant des semaines. Bonne continuation.

Eh bien ravis d’avoir pu vous être utiles ! Nous non plus, nous ne pensions pas que c’était possible, tant l’immense majorité des touristes suit des agences, et nous étions agréablement surpris. Bonne suite de voyage au Maroc !

Bonjour Papadato, Nous ne sommes pas sûrs d’avoir bien compris ta question. A priori le bivouac en autonomie est interdit pour les touristes dans tout le royaume depuis les événements de 2018. Néanmoins, nous imaginons mal les policiers faire des tours à dos de chameau au crépuscule pour repérer les contrevenants à Merzouga. Veillez juste à ne pas vous faire ensevelir en cas de vent violent ! Nous n’avons pas entendu parler de prestataire qui propose de randonner, juste des balades à dos de dromadaire jusqu’à un campement déjà installé. Mais cela ne veut pas dire que ça n’existe pas.

Vous indiquez dans votre article qu’il est finalement « dommage » de s’arrêter à Ouarzazate tant la partie suivante jusqu’à Merzouga est encore plus intéressante. Du coup, où conseillez-vous de faire le premier arrêt si l’on part de Marrakech le matin pour un road-trip à destination de Merzouga ?

Combien conseillez-vous d’allouer de jours à ce séjour entre Marrakech et Merzouga, en incluant le temps passé à Merzouga ?

Dernière question : nous aurons environ 2 ou 3 jours à passer dans une grande ville. Nous hésitons entre Marrakech et Fès… avez-vous une recommandation ? 🙂
