Best things to see and do in Bucharest
The capital of Romania is one of the great unknown of Europe, but increasingly, one of the most interesting and attractive tourist destinations of the continent, for its great beauty, an interesting social life and a wide cultural offer. Located in the Muntenia region - on the banks of the Dâmbovița river - in the southeast of the country, this city has ample green areas and an interesting heritage that is worth visiting. A city without a large population - which barely reaches two million inhabitants - and a pleasant climate throughout the year, makes it easy to enjoy this interesting city, perfect for planning a tourist getaway of a few days. Apart from the atmosphere, the museums and the heritage of the "small Parisian", the visit to the city implies discovering its gastronomy, really varied and especially recommendable. Dishes as recommended as rice wrapped in cabbage "Sarmale", the typical Romanian sausages "Mititei", traditional mash or "Mamaliga", or traditional skewers "Frigarui" The Romanian city has a large number of very interesting places, especially recommended for tourists who are approaching this European destination for the first time. One of the best ways to discover this city is to choose the free walking tour in Bucharest , which runs through the most important places to see such as the Curtea Veche Palace “Corte Vieja”, the megalomano and neoclassical Palace of the Parliament of the communist stage , the recommended Bulevardul Unirii or the Stavropoleos Monastery. Other points of great interest in the city are the Cathedral and Patriarchal Palace, the Carturesti bookstore, the University Square or the Sfantul Anton church. Enjoying the city's nightlife means approaching the Lipscani neighborhood, full of small venues with a great atmosphere. Herastrau Park and Cismigiu Park, as well as the Bellu Cemetery, complete the interesting offer of interesting sites to see in the Romanian city. Free tours in Bucharest are an excellent option for people who want to know the city for the first time, visiting the most important points and discovering the wonders of this great European city. An excellent way to choose a different alternative to traditional visits, which barely cover the interesting cultural and heritage offer of the Romanian capital.
In addition, we recommend you check out the opinions and reviews that other walkers have left on our page about the free walking tours they have done in Bucharest with a local guide. Other cities of interest where you might enjoy a guided tour with a local guide are Brașov, Sovata, Sofia or Skopje.

Welcome everyone! Walkabout Free Tours means a team of licensed guides happy to share with you their love for Bucharest, a city full of contrasts that you will remember!
We started to share our love for stories in 2009, being the first free tours in Romania. It’s being a great ride and thanks to our guests support, our NGO organised a lot of free events and tours for locals too.
We offer daily two free tours . In different occasions we run seasonal thematic trails or charity tours where you have the chance to support local causes.
The “Story of Bucharest” is your best introduction to the city connecting dots to the full context of Romanian history . We cover the main sights starting with the largest one – the Palace of Parliament . We stroll in the cobbled streets of the old town visiting the oldest church, Manuc’s Inn , Stavropoleos Monastery , Caru cu Bere beer house, Lipscani street , CEC Palace , University Square and many other hidden stories about the heart of the city. This tour is available in weekends in Spanish too.
“From Monarchy to Communism ” is our second trail getting out of the pedestrian old town on the most elegant boulevard of the capital – Calea Victoriei . This itinerary is a “ zoom in” in the most interesting century of the city : flourishing with the first king arrival, bombed in the World Wars and facing churches, French palaces and communist institutions . You will meet our four kings and their struggles in the WWs, in love and finally in the forced exile. We will imagine the fancy life back then as we walk by the Royal Palace , the Romanian Atheneum , Cismigiu Garden or secret passages.
Local tips and insights will spice up your experience in Bucharest with fun and emotion , making it a holiday to remember!

Free Walking Tour of Bucharest
- 9.60 / 10 4,610 reviews | 38,260 travellers The guide is very friendly, educated and speaks Spanish perfectly. He also has great knowledge about the city, its history, culture...etc. Regarding the company, I can say that you should NOT put in the description a place that does not correspond to reality as a final point, since it has generated a setback that we had controlled, as well as the duration of the visit. Thank you so much. All the best 8 Anonymous

The free walking tour in Bucharest idea came to life in 2018, after a lunch Catalina had with her parents. She realized then that she knew very few details about the city she grew up in.
She then researched and learned unique hidden facts that she rigorously checked. She collected stories from:
- Other tours
- Old newspaper
- Documentaries
- Memories from grandparents, family, and friends.
Their team believes in storytelling and presenting each monument anchored in its past and myths . They created an experience that conveys feelings not just facts about buildings.

- Ion Mincu and

Jewish Bucharest Tour (4 hrs)
The Jewish history in Bucharest is as old as the city itself. Toward the turn of the 20th century Jews formed an important part of the city’s population, as much as 11 percent in the 1930’s. The once large Jewish community was scattered following the tragedies of the WWII, the hardness of the communist regime and the emigration to Israel.
In the 1980s, in the last years of communist regime, most of the former Jewish Quarter was destroyed as result of a massive urban systematization project, when the area was literally wiped off to make way for the new Civic Center. Three beautiful synagogues and the iconic Jewish Theater are surviving vestiges of the lost Jewish Quarter, in what is now a run-down, disrupted area left after the 1980s demolitions.
Learn about all this and much more during this private Jewish tour, when we visit the most important Jewish sites in Bucharest that include three stunning synagogues.
If you have a more personal interest regarding the Jewish tour, please let me know. I can try to help you in identifying specific sites, or research in cemetery registers / identify family graves, prior to your arrival.
- • The Great Polish Synagogue , major landmark of Bucharest’s Jewish Quarter, currently serving as a museum (visit)
- • The Holocaust Museum (set up inside the Great Synagogue)
- • The Choral Temple (visit; the main synagogue in Bucharest and Romania, where morning and evening services are held every day; considered one of the most beautiful synagogues in the world, recently reopened following thorough restoration works)
- • The State Jewish Theater ‘Baraseum’ , one of the few Yiddish-language theaters left in Europe (we see it from exterior; it is possible to visit it inside with prior arrangements)
- • The Holy Union Temple (“Ahdut Kodesh”), today serving as The History Museum of the Romanian Jews
Tour Information DURATION about 4 hours ACTIVITY LEVEL Light -most of the Jewish objectives are within short walking distance, but if necessary/convenient we could use the car to move between sites PRICE 120 EUR/tour/1-2 people 150 EUR/tour/3-4 people WHAT IS INCLUDED – guiding services – hotel pick-up and drop-off – private transportation by 2017 Volkswagen Golf, air-conditioned EXCLUSIONS 20 Lei/person the admission fee at the Choral Temple; 20 Lei/person the admission fee at the Great Synagogue. ADD ONS It is possible to visit Filantropia Cemetery, Bucharest’s Ashkenazi Jewish cemetery, impressive testimony to what was once a thriving and dynamic Jewish community (+30 EUR)
Reminders The Choral Tempe and the Great Synagogue are closed for visitors on Saturdays and Sundays.
Program/What to Expect
First stop at the Great Polish Synagogue, once the center of the local Jewish community’s religious and social life. The Great Synagogue shelters the Holocaust Museum, documenting about pogroms, deportations and sufferings inflicted on the Jews in Romania during wartime.
Then, short walk to the Jewish State Theater, known as Baraseum Theater. I will explain about the history and importance of Baraseum Theater, inheritor of a long and tradition of Yiddish-language theater in Romania.
Next, visit the old Tailor’s synagogue, currently home to the History Museum of the Romanian Jews. The museum various artifacts, documents and other exhibits on display explain about the life and history of the Jews not only in Bucharest, but on the whole territory of present-day Romania.
Your Bucharest Jewish Tour continues with a visit of the Choral Temple, an active synagogue again after years of careful restoration. The passionate guide of the synagogue will be glad to give you any further information about the present-day life of the Jewish community.
