Destination

Turn-by-turn directions.

The route starts with a visit to the archaeological crypt of the former count's castle, the actual cradle of the city and the country (963). The path follows fortifications from the Middle Ages, the Spanish period (XVItth century), Louis XIV (1684) and other eras. The Wenceslas Wall was once 875 m long and equipped with 37 towers and 15 gates. One of them is the Gothic "Dinseltor". The mighty fortress towers of the Rham plateau now belong to the newly laid out path. The four defense towers have been completely restored and shine in new splendor. The moat was exposed again. The casemates are accessible. It is believed that this part of the wall was built in 1420 and 1424. The railway line to Liège has been running through reinforced fortifications since 1862. At that time it was feared attacks with armored trains. There is a new panoramic viewpoint not far from the railway bridge. The tour continues to the barracks built under Vauban. The defense towers provide a previously unknown panoramic view of the Corniche, the Cité Judiciaire and the red bridge.

1000 years in 100 minutes (Wenzel tour)

This highly intriguing tour through space and time features 1000 years of history and has been rated ‘outstanding cultural itinerary’ by the Council of Europe. The walk across the famous Bock casemates connects the upper and lower town and offers amazing views on the fortress ramparts. It also provides an excellent introduction to the compelling history of the city, formerly also known as ‘Gibraltar of the North’ due to its formidable fortifications which were thought to be unconquerable.

Visitors discover the Bock promontory, old town, Wenceslas ring wall, the Alzette valley and Luxembourg’s fortifications and defenses (above and below ground). The walk pays tribute to Wenceslas II, Duke of Luxembourg between 1383-1419 during whose rule a part of the third ring, the so-called Wenzel wall, was erected. Information boards posted along the way, supply further details about the most important sights and the history of the city. In the archeological crypt of the Bock and the Jacob Tower, audio-visual programs have been set up to explain in depth the development of the city.

The walk starts on the Bock promontory, the cradle of the city which got into the possession of Siegfried, Count of Ardenne, in 963 and also leads to the casemates, the city’s underground defenses. An absolut must see if you are in Luxembourg!

Luxembourg: Enjoying the Views Along the Wenzel Walk

  • September 6, 2017
  • in Luxembourg , Things to Do

if you wish to explore Luxembourg city, one of the best options is to follow the Wenzel Walk, an itinerary that the city has set up to guide visitors around its many highlights.

Perched over the deep narrow valleys where the Alzette and Petrusse rivers meet, Luxembourg city is one of Europe’s most scenic capitals . With its rich cultural heritage and cosmopolitan vibe, there are many interesting things to see and do in Luxembourg. In fact, if you wish to explore the city, one of the best options is to follow one of the walking itineraries (there are two) that the city has set out to guide visitors on their quest.

Since my time in Luxembourg was limited, I picked the Wenzel walk to see a bit more of the city. Rated by the Council of Europe as an outstanding cultural itinerary, this trail combines information about the natural and man-made environments around Luxembourg city.

wenzel tour start

The circuit covers 4.3 kilometers and highlights some of the oldest parts of the city , which date back from the Middle Ages up to more recent works from the 19th century. You can get a free leaflet with information and a map at the Luxembourg City Tourist Office (located on Place Guillaume II).

If you are considering a trip to Luxembourg , don’t miss my post listing seven reasons why you should visit this off-the-beaten-path destination!

The Wenzel Walk

The itinerary starts at the Bock promontory, the cradle of the city, which is the place where the first castle was built and started the development of the town that later became the capital of Luxembourg. This is also the site of the world’s longest casemates , a series of underground defense tunnels with fortified gun emplacements. If you can, spend some time exploring the Bock Casemates before continuing the walk.

Wenzel walk in Luxembourg city

After crossing the Castle Bridge, you’ll reach the Chemin de la Corniche , a promenade lined up with pretty houses in warm pastel tones that offers impressive views on the valley below . As you continue descending the views keep getting even better and you’ll see some curious details, like the love locks on a fence and a peculiar circular viewpoint.

While I marched down to the river, there was a building that kept catching my attention because it really stands out among the rest. With its needle-like tower and its location on the banks of the Alzette river, the St. Jean du Grund church is one of the most recognizable buildings in the Grund , the quarter located in the valley below the center of Luxembourg city.

View during the Wenzel walk in Luxembourg city

After walking to the other side of the river and admiring some of the historic structures in this complex, I continued on to the Plateau du Rham , where you can see some defensive installations from different times. After this point, there were almost no other people on the trail , so I had these pretty views all to myself! 😊

Plateau du Rham, Wenzel walk in Luxembourg city

Continuing on the Wenzel walk, and after crossing a large retirement complex, I came across a few viewpoints where you can admire the Chemin de la Corniche from the other side of the valley. The views from here were just stunning and well worth the walk.

wenzel tour start

The walk then continues on to an old defensive bridge before reaching the end at the Grund. There you can enjoy a well-deserved treat in one of the many cafes and restaurants in the area. And if you want to head back up to the city center, you can easily do so via a public elevator.

This time, I chose to take a detour instead. A couple of days before I went on this walk, I had seen from the Place de la Constitution a beautiful green area in the valley below along with a perfectly manicured little garden area. I could not find a way there from above, so I wanted to see if I could reach it from below.

So instead of following the Wenzel walk till the end, I decided to keep walking along the Petrusse valley . The area was full with locals enjoying a pleasant Saturday afternoon. There were people playing mini-golf, having a picnic, rolling around the skate park, jogging, and walking their dogs.

Skateboarding park and Luxembourg Viaduct in Luxembourg city

Also, there is a road that passes right beneath the Pont Adolphe and goes all the way to the city centre. However, just before reaching the top, make a right turn on the small road and you will reach the gorgeous garden that stands just below the Place de la Constitution . There are no signs for it, so it stays empty most of the time. It was kind of amusing watching the people above trying to figure out how to reach the garden.

Garden below Place de la Constitution in Luxembourg city

Overall, I really enjoyed following the Wenzel walk because it showed me a few of the highlights in Luxembourg city. Plus, I also saw some of its off the beaten path sites .

The walk takes between 2 – 3 hours, depending on your speed and how many photos you take. Although most of the walk is paved, there are a few steps and places that are not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Also, bring some water and snacks , because there are no places to buy anything along the way.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldnÂŽt have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of todayÂŽs Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Low scores the norm on thursday at the zurich classic, share this article.

wenzel tour start

AVONDALE, La. – There’s a saying in golf that you can’t win the tournament on Thursday, but you can lose it, and no event epitomizes that adage like the Zurich Classic of New Orleans .

Unlike other PGA Tour events, for the last seven years this event has been unique with its two-man team format. It also drops the traditional 72-hole stroke play format in favor of fourball (best ball) in the first and third rounds and foursomes (alternate shot) in the second and final rounds. This means that on Thursday and Saturday, each team has two balls in play on every hole, and, ideally, two opportunities to make birdies. As you might suspect, that format drops scores faster than oysters and beers go down on Bourbon Street.

Taking advantage of excellent scoring conditions Thursday morning at TPC Louisiana, Davis Thompson and Andrew Novak birdied three of their first four holes. Then they made five more birdies and an eagle to shoot a 10-under 62, which put them atop the leaderboard as the morning wave of teams worked around the 7,425-yard course.

“(Davis) teed off first on every hole, and he was driving it so good off the tee that I never really stressed out when I was hitting,” Novak said. “We just played our own game and tried to make birdies because it was pretty gettable. We were the first group out on the day, so the greens were rolling perfect.”

You will never hear professional golfers say anything negative about a 62, but Thompson and Novak were not fist-bumping or high-fiving after they walked off their final hole. Scores like theirs are expected on Fourball days here.

Davis Riley partnered with Nick Hardy to win here last season, and they shot an opening round 64. In his pre-tournament press conference, Riley said, “You kind of really figure out where you are in the tournament after the second day, once you get one best ball and one alternate shot (round) under your belt.”

The stats reinforce Riley’s point because coming into this week, the average first-round score in PGA Tour events for a player who finished the week in the top 10 was 67.82. But the average score of a team that finished in the top 10 at last season’s Zurich Classic was 63.8. In 2022, it was 62.3, and in 2021 it was 64.4.

The highest score of a team to finish in the top 10 over the last three years at TPC Louisiana was a 67 from Thomas Pieters and Tom Lewis in 2021. So, if you want to contend in the Bayou, your team needs to go low on Thursday.

“In my mind, I felt like double digits (under par) was very attainable,” Thompson said. “I felt like we just needed to take advantage of the par 5s. On the par 4s, we had wedges in, so you try to make birdies there. The par 3s are tough out here, so we were just trying to get two looks (at birdie), and I feel we did that on everyone until the last.”

Shortly after Thompson and Novak signed their cards and headed to the clubhouse for lunch, Robert MacIntyre and Thomas Detry posted a 62, and then Ryan Fox and Garrick Higgo finished at 9-under 63. Ryan Brehm and his partner, Mark Hubbard, topped them all with a 61 as group after group posted low rounds Thursday.

However, as Fox said, every player fully understands that birdies and low scores will probably be  tougher  to make on Friday in Foursomes.

“Today, you kind of take everything on,” Fox said. “Tomorrow, you’ve got to be a bit more circumspect and sort of hope one of you gets hot with the putter and he’s the guy that ends up putting a lot.”
