The West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Limited (WBFDCL) came into existence in 1974 on the recommendation of National Commission of Agriculture in their Interim Report in 1972 on "Production Forestry - Man-Made Forests". Having been registered as a Company and incorporated as per Companies Act, 1956; the Corporation started functioning on 19th November, 1974. In course of time, the Corporation has diversified its activities into eco - tourism, wood - based industries, NTFP Management, plantations of economically valuable species, etc and expanded its operations almost all over West Bengal.

Purulia is a land of natural beauty. This westernmost district of West Bengal is part of the Chotonagpur plateau which unravels her untapped mystery and wondrous beauty. The landscape is rocky and undulating. Tribal ethos enriches the mystic charm and natural beauty of this land of red soil and red blooms of Palash. The region is home to different tribal communities like Santhals, Kurmis, Kherias-Sabars to name a few. Song and dance are an intrinsic part in the lives of the tribal people.

Jhumur Jhumur songs and dance are popular among artisan communities like Kurmi, Kumhaar, Rajwar, Ghatoal, Hari, Muchi, Dom etc and tribal's like Santhal, Munda, Oraon, Kharia, Birharh tribes. Jhumur is known for its lyrical and literary significance because of the use of ancient language. Different Jhumur songs are sung at different times of the year, As for example Chaitali is sung in the month of Chiatra (spring), Bhaduria is sung in the month of Bhadra. Jhumur songs are very popular even today.

Garh Panchakot Situated at the foothill of Panchakot (panchet hill),in the north east corner of the Purulia District,close to the boundary with district Burdwan and JharKhand. Hilltop offers picturesque and panoramic view of the command area of the Panchet dam on Damodar river and its reservior. Bird watching on Panchet dam is a treat to the eye.

Tourists travelling by train, get down at the stations of Barakor or Asansol and take a trekker to cover an hour long path to reach Garpanchakot. They can also take the car route by driving along the National Highway 2. After crossing Asansol, turn left and take the road leading to Raghunathpur. After reaching the Satbari stop, destination is few kilometers away by the village path.

Chau Dance The culture in Purulia concentrates on the traditional folk dance 'Chau'. Popular among Santhals, Kumars, Mahatos, Kalindis and Sahish communities are the rare masked dancers of chau represents the essentially local culture. The use of beautiful masks and the exclusive style of dance, make-up and colourful costumes have made this dance popular all over the world. Many consider this form to be a kind of martial art because of the physical strength and agility involved in dancing. The Chau dance is an inseparable part of the rituals and the festivities of Purulia. Earlier the productions were primarily based on mythological stories from the Ramayana, the Puranas etc but presently contemporary issues like Santhal revolt, Kargil war etc are used as themes for the shows.

Baghmundi Baghmundi is a small community development block located in the administrative division of Purulia. Every year thousands of tourists visit this place to witness the natural beauty of the magnificent Ayodhya Hills and the many dams. The picturesque landscape here consists of undulating hills, cascading waterfalls, lush green forests with rich variety of flora and fauna. Travelers can get a variety of experience from historical and archeological sites to eco tourism.

Baghmundi Pahar

There is no railway station near to Baghmundi in less than 10 km. However Bokaro Steel City Rail Way Station is major railway station 55 km near to Baghmundi.

Ayodhya Hills Ayodhya Hills is a hill located in the Purulia district. It is a part of the Dalma Hills and extended part of Eastern Ghats range. Highest peak of Ajodhya Hills is Gorgaburu. The nearest populated town is Bagmundi. It is a popular place for young mountaineers to learn the basic course in rock climbing. There are two routes available to reach Ajodhya Hills. One is via Jhalda and the other one is via Sirkabad. There is a Forest Rest House here. Gorgaburu (855 m), Mayuri etc. are of the some of the peaks of Ajodhya hills range. The area forms the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The general scenario is undulating land with scattered hills. The area around Bagmundi or Ajodhya Hill is an extended plateau.

AYODHYA HILLS

Ayodhya Hill is about 260 km from Kolkata, 42 km from Purulia town. Durgapur Expressway connects Purulia to Kolkata. Several trains to Purulia are available from Howrah. Buses are also available from Kolkata.

Baranti Baranti is a small, quiet and scenic place. There is a 2 km long irrigation project dam, located between two small hillocks, Muradi Hill and Baranti Hill. Baranti is in the vicinity of Ramchandrapur Irrigation Project. One gets a grand view of the reservoir from Baranti. It is a place where one can take a break from drudgery and daily monotony and simply rejuvenate one's mind and soul. It is part of the wonderful Rarh countryside. Baranti is also a picnic spot where people from nearby areas come for a day-long picnic.

By Air: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata is the nearest airport.

By Train: The district of Purulia has its own railway station. Purulia station is a junction, as all the long distance trains stop here. Several trains to Purulia are available from Howrah.

By Road: Purulia is well connected to the other districts and regions in West Bengal through roadways. There are regular bus services and cab facilities that link Purulia to the neighboring cities. Ayodhya Hill is about 260 kms from Kolkata, 42 kms from Purulia town. Durgapur Expressway connects Purulia to Kolkata.

How to reach

One can easily travel by car from Kolkata for around 5-6 hours as the route is around 263 km.

Another way of reaching this spot would be by train. One needs to reach the Muradi railway station on the Adra-Asansol line. From here Baranti is 6 km. You can reach by a cycle rickshaw or a trekker too.
