Project X LZ Tour Graphite Iron Shaft Review

More in shafts:.

Mitsubishi Diamana Putter Shaft

50 Words or Less

The Project X LZ Tour graphite iron shaft has a lot of its steel counterpart’s performance characteristics but with the smoothness and weight of a graphite iron shaft.

Introduction

I thought highly of the steel Project X LZ iron shaft I reviewed last year .  While the 120g steel LZ was good for a broad range of players, others might want a lighter shaft with similar performance.  To meet this demand, Project X released the LZ Tour graphite iron shaft.  The LZ Tour graphite iron shafts utilize a reduced stiffness in the midsection for maximum shaft load and weigh in at 90 grams.

Project-X-LZ-Graphite-Iron-8

For a graphite iron shaft, the Project X LZ Tour graphite shafts look so sweet.  The butt and tip sections are plain black, but the midsection has a weave pattern to it.  I can’t speak to whether or not the weave has any practical impact, but it showcases the “Loading Zone” concept and looks cool.  Project X uses their familiar silver and blue graphics which really pop on the black graphite.

Project-X-LZ-Graphite-Iron-9

This review was the first time I had ever hit a Project X graphite iron shaft of any type.  Given Project X’s excellent reputation I wasn’t too concerned about how they would perform, but I was curious how they would feel.  Comparing to the steel LZ iron shaft, I think the graphite shaft’s kick is a little smoother.  The steel LZ has a notable pop whereas the graphite LZ has a smoother release.   I tested the graphite LZ in a Callaway Apex MB, and the graphite absorbed a lot of shock on mishits.  Despite being graphite, the LZ Tour is still very responsive.

Project-X-LZ-Graphite-Iron-3

Performance

True to Project X ‘s advertisement, the LZ Tour graphite iron shaft has a mid-launch with low spin.  The LZ Tour isn’t the lowest spinning shaft I’ve hit, but I wasn’t seeing many balls zip back on the greens.  The trajectory was right   in the middle which made the LZ extremely controllable.   If you’re starting from the middle, it’s much less work to flight the ball up or down as needed.  Naturally, this made managing the wind much easier.

Finally, I want to talk punch shots.  I’m not ashamed to admit that when I played a full round with the LZ Tour shafts, I had to work from under trees a few times.  The LZ Tour graphite shafts may be the best punch shot shaft I’ve ever hit.   Something about them made it feel effortless.  The analogy may be tough to relate to, but it felt like throwing a saucer pass in hockey.  All it took was pulling the club back and flicking it forward to punch the ball right on target.  This made a very lasting impression on me and is a testament to the LZ Tour’s playability.

Project-X-LZ-Graphite-Iron-2

The lighter graphite Project X LZ Tour aren’t exactly apples-to-apples with their steel counterparts, but they’re a great shaft.  Their performance is similar, but the lighter weight and smoother feel sets the graphite LZ Tour apart.  If feeling that kick is less important to you and you’re looking for something a bit easier to play with great feel, consider the Project X LZ Tour graphite iron shafts.

What is the difference between the 5.0 and 6.0 shafts? Flex?

' src=

Yes, Project X denotes flex with numbers: 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, etc.

' src=

How does the LZ Graphite 6.0 compare to Recoil F4 95?

' src=

I’ve never hit the Recoil so I couldn’t even come close to speaking to that comparison.

' src=

I built up a Hot Metal Pro 7i in each of those (and also hit the LZ 5.0). The LZ 6.0 is a bit more lively than the Recoil. The 5.0 is much more lively, but with my swing I felt a little too much movement at the top of the swing. Both the LZ and Recoil and great shafts, I went LZ in the rest of the irons as I like that little bit of extra feel. I also think the matte black looks way better than the “iron-like” finish on the Recoils.

' src=

I currently have 825 pros I’m looking for new iron and a lighter shaft I demoed some ap3 I hit the 7 iron with a ball flight of 110 ft then hit my 7 with ball flight of 106 my current shaft is 120 gram I know a lighter shaft promotes higher ball flight will the project x lz tour graphite keep ball fight the same or lower it any?

I genuinely can’t answer that question for you. You would have to see how you hit it on the monitor and what impact it would have on your specific swing. If I were to advise either direction, it would be irresponsible. My suggestion is to be properly fit for the shaft, especially if you’re looking to make a significant change.

' src=

I just want to give you guys props for nice reviews. I have been trying to find reviews on different graphite shafts and time after time yours come up. When I look for something on the other popular sites all I get is forum threads with very little real info just a bunch of comments on looks or whatever. This review lead me to getting these shafts and putting them in a set of Srixon Z565s should be a good combo.

Thanks! That means a great deal to us.

I thought I would do a follow up on these shafts after hitting them on the range for the first time. I wanted to go to graphite for my sore elbows but I didn’t want to go super light so these were a good step from 105 weight irons. Very smooth feel and great ball flight with my long and mid irons. I was hitting my 7 iron arrow straight time after time. This was the first time I could hit a full set of them and I was surprised at how high I was hitting my PW. I think the next step is to take them in for gap testing. I was wondering if you noticed any issues like this when you fit someone into these? At first I thought I might put these in my wedges to be consistent through the set but now I’m puzzled by that ball flight. With their mid kick point they seem like they might be a good wedge shaft. Perhaps they are such a different beast from steel I will need to learn a different way to play my wedges.

' src=

Is the project XL Z graphite shaft for irons a high launch shaft . Thanks

' src=

I am look to get my daughter some new shafts that are senior flex. Are Project X Iron 4.5 flex a senior flex or a ladies flex?

The conventional wisdom puts a 6.0 as a stiff, 5.5 as a regular, 5.0 as a senior flex, and 4.5 as ladies.

' src=

I have the PX LZ tour 5.0s in a set of Mizuno MP-54s. I personally love the ball flight. I was usually a mid ball flight guy with my KBS tour 90s, but with the LZs the flight is mid/high. And i have gained 8 yards carry. I went from 158y, to 166 yards carry. And the feel is awesome. I just bought a second set of the LZs before they become scarce.

' src=

I’m playing the 6.0 in a split set of 919s…and I can definitely agree with the comments on punch shots….I used to play a lot of links, so naturally have a low punch as a go to….in fact the punch shots with these shafts is so good, I find myself going with it pretty often from the middle of the fairway and despite no wind

' src=

I am a golfer that usually is in the reg flex steel shaft domain with now a slower swing speed in low nineties.. Is this a ‘traditional’ graphite shaft for slow swing speeds, older golfers… or? What is the target market for this graphite shaft? (90gm, mid section with less stiffness) Bottom line, I was considering purchasing these irons and leaving this shaft in the 4,5, and 6.. (and changing the 7, 8, with a reg flex steel shaft and perhaps a stiff PW. ‘Experienced’ not ‘Speculative’ thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

This is somewhere in between a “conventional” graphite iron shaft and a “Tour” graphite iron shaft. The best advice is to get fit before buying new irons so you know what actually works for your swing.

' src=

hello, I’m between buying the project x lz and the catalyst 60 Which is the better shaft? Thanks.

Neither is objectively better, you need to get fit to find out which one is better for you.

' src=

I was just wondering about swing weight differences with these shafts as replacements for my current steel 6.0 LZ’s? I like my currents but the body is getting older. I still have club head speed, just looking for something easier on the body. Would I need to be adding weight to the heads with these? D1or 2 now. I may be mixing up my adding or subtracting weight according to the shaft weight. I’d have to look at my notes since I haven’t tinkered in awhile. Thank you for any suggestions and your expertice. Clay

I’m not certain about how the weight is distributed in these. Generally, moving to lighter shafts requires adding weight to the club head to maintain swing weight.

PX Rifle 105 Tour Flighted .370" Steel Iron Shafts Close Out

Shaft services optional, description.

The Project X 105 Rifle Tour Flighted iron shafts are lightweight version of the original Rifle Flighted profile. Many players struggle optimizing trajectories throughout their iron set — oftentimes sacrificing control in the short irons to achieve more trajectory in the long irons.

Rifle 105 Tour Flighted combines a unique design with specific tip-trim instructions that creates a progressive kick point throughout the set to manipulate ball flight and product optimal trajectories depending on specific club choice. This allows for a flighted set—offering a mid–high trajectory in the longer irons, a mid trajectory in the middle irons and a mid–low trajectory in the scoring irons.

  • Lightweight version of the original Rifle Flighted profile
  • Features a progressive kick point to manipulate ball flight and produce optimal trajectories for each club within the set
  • Designed for players who struggle to optimize trajectories in their irons
  • Progressive design delivers higher trajectories in the mid and long irons and controllable trajectories in the short irons
  • Note: * Weight listed in spec box below is the trimmed weight of the golf shafts
  • Note: ** Additional trimming required on the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts for AW, GW and SW wedges - For AW wedge trim 5 1/8", GW trim 5 3/8" and SW trim 5 5/8"

SHAFT REVIEW – Project X Graphite Shafts

By: Matt Saternus

How many times have you let some preconceived idea or bias get in the way of playing the best equipment for your game?  I think for many of us club-crazy golfers, the answer is “more times than I’d like to admit.”

Personally, I will admit to a bit of a bias against Project X .  Despite being fit into them on a couple of occasions, I’ve never loved the feel of their iron shafts.  Because of this, I’ve never given too much thought to their graphite offerings.  As you’ll see in this review, that would have been a HUGE mistake: the Project X graphite shafts are some of the most accurate and consistent I’ve ever tested.

project x tour shafts

Notes, Feel, Price, and Miscellaneous

I came into this review with very low expectations for the feel of Project X graphite.  I will happily report that I was wrong to expect so little.  To me, the Project X feels most similar to the Nunchuk: a solid, “one-piece” feel with very little kick or torque.  While not as smooth as a Matrix or Diamana, there’s nothing harsh about the Project X whatsoever.  I found this feel was very similar from 6.0 to 7.0.  Players with more swing speed or more aggressive tempos may disagree and could find more difference from one flex to the next.

With regard to looks, the Project X plays it safe with a solid blue color and minimal graphics.

When considering the standard and tour issue lines, weights of the Project X graphite shafts range from 60 to over 100 grams.  Flex ranges from 5.0 to 7.0 on the Rifle scale

Project X graphite shafts carry an MSRP of $275 but can be found for around $150.  The Tour Issue profiles can be found through select fitters and club builders or through some OEM custom order programs.

project x tour shafts

Performance

For the Performance testing, I hit each of the shafts in a Callaway RAZR Fit 10.5 head on a FlightScope X2 launch monitor .  I hit 20 “good” shots with each shaft, changing frequently so that fatigue was not an issue, nor did I get grooved with one shaft to the detriment of fairness.

Testing was done at Golf Nation in Palatine, IL, one of the best indoor golf facilities in the country.

*NOTE: Testing was done inside. Uur FlightScope seems to be producing somewhat different numbers indoors compared to outdoors.  To greater or lesser extents, ball speed, and spin are all coming in lower than they did outdoors, hence the carry number is smaller.  That said, it’s still an apples-to-apples comparison, so no attempt has been made to “normalize” the numbers: we’re publishing the numbers straight off the FlightScope, as always.

project x tour shafts

The Project X shafts produced very consistent numbers for me across the board.  The launch was medium-high, and the spin was very manageable, especially when you consider I was hitting exclusively fades (with the exception of a couple pulls).

The big story to me is the accuracy.  In my opinion, the “Off Line” number doesn’t really do justice to the Project X in this case.  While the shots may have been consistently off of the center line, they were very tightly grouped.  The dispersion numbers in the FlightScope graphic are some of the smallest I’ve ever achieved.  In fact, were it not for two pulled shots, I think each shaft would have posted a dispersion number under 40, which is outstanding for me.

project x tour shafts

As I said in the intro, the Project X graphite shafts are some of the most consistent and accurate that I’ve ever tested.  While there are not a lot of different options in the standard line, the Tour Issue line offers enough different weights and profiles to suit a wide variety of different players.  Though there are newer, “hotter” models out, aggressive-swinging players who want to tighten up their dispersion would do well to consider putting a Project X graphite shaft in their driver.

I now have PX 5.0 graphite shafts in my irons, both Mizuno JPX 800 Pro & Cobra Bio Cell.

I have PX shafts in several Drivers, and a set of Mizuno JPX 800 Pro’s…..Love these shafts. The 5.0 seems to suit my demands.

I play steel Project X shafts in a set of Cobra blades and really like them. I saw a slightly used Ping 2.0, 9.5 deg on sale with the Project X 6.0 graphite shaft, so didn’t hesitate to buy it. First time with it in my hands on a range with street shoes on, the shot pattern was tight (although with a mild push). Can’t wait to play in a tournament tomorrow with this driver (and with real golf shoes on). So far, we are impressed and the driver was purchased for much less than the shaft alone.

Can anyone tell me what trimming a graphite shaft from the butt does to the preformance of the shaft. I want to go from a 46 inch driver to a 44 3/4 inch driver.

You will hardly notice the difference.

Recently I´ve bought a Callaway X Hot Driver with a graphite Project X Regular flex shaft. I am 71 years old with a HCP 30 and I have a feeling, that the shaft is too stiff for me. Let me know your opinion and advise, please. Thanks Ladislav

Nice review Matt. Have been playing a Project X Black 6.0 in my 3 wood this year — love what it’s doing!

golf teaching aids

You have came up with a very nice review here…its appreciable. Quite impressive! After reading this review i am thinking of considering this Project X graphite shafts.

I have tried the PX shafts and they do not work for me. Me, being a newbie golfer with an aggressive pissed off swing. I do have friends tat love them and have great results. Anyone I know that likes these shafts are good golfers with a smooth tempo and an actual golf swing. I am not surprised by the results of your testing. The are great for the right golfer. Which equates to a good golfer or at least someone with a smooth swing.

Tour Shaft go up to 1000 grams?! They must be giving those to crazy strong player! JK. Great review, the shaft looks like a real straight shooter. I always like to PX blue color scheme as well, stands out nicely.

What’s an extra zero between friends? Thanks for the catch. Fixed.

Great review! Would you happen to have your hands on some PX graphite iron shafts to review?

Adam Huckeby

Pretty impressive groupings there. I had a project x shaft in an i20 for a short while. I saw similar results…tight groups but not particularly amazing ballspeed. Thanks for the review !

…Also I was just wondering if you guys think you might be getting any hybrid reviews in this year.

Project X Steel Shafts for Irons

Project X is now also involved in the market for wood and driver shafts. However, this shaft became famous for its unique "rifle design" without the usual steps. Project X played a major role on the Tour from the very beginning with its basic low launch, low spin profile. Players like Rory McIlroy do not think about changing the shaft.

Meanwhile Project X is part of "True Temper", but has not lost any of its original concept. Over the years, more shafts have been added to the original Project X, most notably the Project X LZ, which is also very popular on Tour. But also off the Tour, Project X wants to continue with new shaft concepts such as the Project X IO or the Catalyst, a graphite shaft with the characteristics of steel shafts.

project x tour shafts

Project X Rifle

This shaft is constructed without steps and therefore has a unique design. However, this is not only an advantage in terms of design but also in terms of flex distribution and energy transfer. And this without having a negative influence on control. This stepless construction makes the tip very stiff and therefore provides more precision with optimal control of trajectory and spin.

The bend profile of the Project X is quite interesting and roughly comparable to the Nippon Modus 3 120 . The end of the grip is relatively soft and becomes stiffer as the grip progresses, in the middle very soft and in the tipp stiffer again. Exactly this stiff tip is decisive for the profile with low spin and low trajectory.

Project X LS

The Project X LS stands for low spin and further enhances the "low spin characteristic". The LS was just released in 2020 and has a brushed finish. Like the Project X Rifle it has no steps. The LS is even softer in the grip area than the Project X rifle. This makes it possible to make the other parts of the shaft even stiffer. Therefore the Project X LS is really only designed for very athletic players who swing very aggressively. The difference to the Project X rifle though is marginal and probably only noticeable for extremely good players.

Project X IO

This shaft concept is already known from the Dynamic Gold AMT shaft , where the shafts for longer irons are becoming lighter and lighter. Basically, we believe this concept is only useful for players who really struggle to launch the ball with long irons.

Project X LZ

The Loading Zone Technology makes this shaft unique and gives it its name: LZ. It enables a 7% greater transfer of energy to the ball and therefore ensures greater distances. This technology is not only visible in the club, but can also be seen in the conical steps from the grip through the middle section of the Project X LZ.

As far as the profile is concerned, the Project X LZ differs significantly from the Project X Rifle and is, for example, an alternative to the Nippon Modus 120. However, the profile of the LZ is much more pronounced than the Modus, namely very stiff in the lower part of the grip, very soft in the middle and again a stiff tip - the latter is the prerequisite for an overall low launch with little spin.

The stiffness of the shaft should not be underestimated and the LZ is even stiffer than the Project X rifle. That's why the Project X LZ in 7.0 is only available as a tour version and is played by Tommy Fleetwood, for example. For us normal mortals this variant is not available, but Project X 7.0 is.

project x tour shafts

Project X vs. Project X LZ - Our Review

When comparing the data, it quickly becomes apparent that the Project X LZ is a little stiffer than the Project X of the same rank. This means that a Project X 6.0 is about as stiff as the Project X LZ 5.5 - but also a little lighter. So if you generally tend towards lighter but stiffer, you should have found a candidate in the Project X LZ.

However, the differences are not dramatic. For our test, we nevertheless compared Project X 6.0 with Project X LZ 5.5 because these shafts have practically the same stiffness.

The results are as follows:

project x tour shafts

In terms of launch and spin, we would not find any differences based on this test. The Project X LZ shows a little more spin, but this is mainly due to the strike pattern. It makes no sense to classify one of the shafts with a higher launch or more spin. The big difference is in the profile and this is particularly evident in the transition. Our player got along much better with the Project X with its relatively aggressive transition from backswing to downswing. This is also reflected in the result and especially in the outliers that did not make it into our analysis. Our test player noticed relatively early on that the aggressive transition gets him into trouble more easily - which can also be seen directly in the dispersion. A large part of the balls were either slightly blocked or slightly closed. A typically poor strike pattern for good players who get to the ball from the inside. The comparison of Project X and Project X LZ is an example of how individual shafts can be. Another player might have achieved exactly the opposite result.

Golf Shafts Comparison | Project X Iron Shafts

What is Project X shaft flex chart?

The Project X shaft flex chart provides a guide to the different flex options available for Project X golf shafts, both for irons and woods/hybrids. Here’s a summary of the Project X shaft flex chart you provided:

  • Regular – 5.0
  • Regular Plus – 5.5
  • Stiff – 6.0
  • Extra Stiff – 6.5
  • Extra Stiff Plus – 7.0

Woods and Hybrids:

  • Regular Plus – 5.0
  • Stiff – 5.5
  • Stiff Plus – 6.0

These numbers represent the flex rating of the shafts, with higher numbers indicating stiffer shafts. It’s important to note that these are general guidelines, and the best way to determine the right shaft flex for your game is to have a professional club fitting. The fitting takes into account factors like swing speed, club head speed, swing weight, and swing type to recommend the ideal shaft flex for your specific needs.

Fujikura Ventus 5R Shaft Specs: All You Need To Know sporticmedia.com

Project X Shaft Specs

Here’s a detailed table using the provided Project X shaft specifications:

These specifications provide valuable information for golfers looking to select the right Project X shaft based on factors like weight, torque, launch angle, and spin rate. Remember that these values are general guidelines and may vary depending on the specific model and flex of the shaft.

It’s highly recommended to consult with a professional club fitter to determine the ideal shaft for your game, taking into account your individual swing characteristics and preferences.

What is Project X Shafts swing speed?

Project X shafts do not have a specific swing speed associated with them, as the appropriate shaft flex for a golfer depends on various factors beyond just swing speed. Swing speed is one of the factors that can help determine the suitable shaft flex, but it’s not the sole consideration.

The Project X shafts you mentioned in a previous response are available in different flex options such as 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0. The choice of flex depends on factors like swing speed, tempo, ball flight preferences, and feel preferences.

Typically, golfers with slower swing speeds may benefit from a softer flex (e.g., 5.0 or 5.5), while those with faster swing speeds may prefer a stiffer flex (e.g., 6.0, 6.5, or 7.0). However, this is a general guideline, and individual fitting by a professional is recommended to determine the most appropriate shaft flex for your specific swing characteristics and performance goals.

How do you read Project X shafts?

How do you read Project X shafts?

Reading and understanding Project X shafts involves interpreting the information on the shaft itself. Project X shafts typically have numbers and letters that convey essential details about the shaft’s specifications. Here’s how to read and understand Project X shaft markings:

  • Brand and Model: Project X shafts will usually have the brand name “Project X” prominently displayed on the shaft, often near the grip end. The specific model of the shaft, such as “HZRDUS,” “LZ,” or “EvenFlow,” will also be indicated.
  • Flex Rating: The flex rating of the shaft is indicated by a number and decimal point. For example, if you see “6.0,” it represents a stiff flex shaft. Project X shafts come in a range of flex options, including 5.0 (regular), 5.5 (regular plus), 6.0 (stiff), 6.5 (extra stiff), and 7.0 (extra stiff plus).
  • Weight: The weight of the shaft is often indicated in grams. For instance, a shaft might be marked as “70g,” signifying that it weighs 70 grams. Different Project X shaft models come in various weight options to cater to different swing preferences.
  • Torque Rating: The torque rating of the shaft is indicated by a number with a decimal point, typically measured in degrees. A lower torque number indicates less shaft twist during the swing, contributing to stability. A higher torque number suggests more forgiveness on off-center hits.
What’s The Difference Between Maxfli Tour and Maxfli Tour X? sporticmedia.com
  • Launch Angle: Project X shafts may specify the launch angle they are designed to produce. This information can give you an idea of the intended ball flight characteristics, but it’s essential to consult with a professional fitter for precise guidance.
  • Spin Rate: Some shafts may indicate their intended spin rate characteristics. Lower spin shafts are often preferred for a penetrating ball flight, while higher spin shafts can help the ball hold greens more effectively.
  • Serial Number: On many Project X shafts, you’ll find a serial number or identification code that can be used for reference and warranty purposes.

It’s important to note that the specific markings and their location on Project X shafts may vary depending on the shaft model and series. When selecting a Project X shaft, it’s highly recommended to work with a professional club fitter or consult the manufacturer’s official documentation for the most accurate and detailed information regarding that particular shaft’s specifications.

A professional fitting ensures that you choose the right Project X shaft to match your swing characteristics and playing preferences for improved performance on the golf course.

Rifle Tour Flighted 105 Shafts - Awesome Performance in a Lighter Weight

Rifle Tour Flighted 105 Shafts - Awesome Performance in a Lighter Weight

By DanSueltz December 10th, 2022

Rifle Tour Flighted 105 Shafts offer awesome performance in a lighter weight steel.  Available only through custom club fitters like True Fit Clubs, these shafts can be customized to meet today's golfers most demanding needs.

Lighter Weight

The Project X Rifle Tour Flighted 105 shafts come in three different weights:

R Flex  - 107 grams - Built flexes from L+(3.5) to R+(5.5)

S Flex - 108 grams - Built flexes from A+(4.5) to S(6.0)

X Flex - 113 grams - Built flexes from R(5.0) to S+(6.5)

These shafts are very customizable with a wide range of flexes in each shaft weight.

Flight and Spin Characteristics

The concept of "Tour Flighting" has been around for years.  Most tour players like higher trajectory in their long irons (3,4,5) but more penetrating ball flight in their scoring irons (8,9,PW).  That is exactly how the Project X Rifle Tour Flighted 105 irons are designed.  In our testing, the difference is not dramatic but noticeable enough to give better stopping power on longer iron shots into a green.

Flex                                          Trajectory                       Spin

R Flex                                    Mid-High                    Mid-High

Project X vs KBS Tour: Comparison

Project X is one of the best in the market, True Sports wished so and the players made it come true.

According to a publication by Golfweek USA Today, a large percentage of golfers make use of the True Temper Steel Shafts in their irons on the PGA Tour.

These models are used by Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and others too, according to Golfweek.

True Temper Sports has an admirable foot in the world of golf today.

For over 70 seventy years, this brand has been in the business of shaft making and has done nothing but soar, the name itself speaks standards.

Being the most trusted brand in golf shafts globally, True Temper strives to keep that trophy in check.

The brand has a warehouse of shaft types to choose from, such as the flagship Dynamic Gold, Project X, AMT, Elevate, Aerotech (for graphite lovers), and Accra shafts made with love for the custom fitters.

Each of these shafts has various types of tweaks from the original model to cater to players with slightly different preferences.

This article discusses the Project X shaft and one of its counterparts, the KBS Tour Shaft.

What to Know About Project X

Project X vs KBS Tour

The project X shafts were designed to provide a stiffer feel and heavy load.

The shaft is ideal for players who don’t like to feel the shaft moving during the swing, as it has minimal deflection. It has a mid-launch low-launch profile with a low spin and fast tempo.

Project X is preferred by strong players who swing strong looking for a stable, penetrating ball.

Project X comes in 5 different flexes: 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, 6.5, and 7.0. It also ranks as the second most used shaft after Dynamic Gold.

Compared to the Project X shaft, KBS Tour is soft in the tip but has a thick middle section.

This makes it a lot more different than Project X, which has a stiffer tip and a softer midsection in comparison.

What to Know About KBS Tour

Project X vs KBS Tour

While KBS Tour has a low club head speed, that of Project X is a little bit higher, which also makes a good difference between the two.

KBS Tour might be able to give you a higher launch trajectory as well as a lower spin rate.

The KBS Tour shafts were designed to complement the stoutness of Project X, the shaft has a stiff tip, soft mid-section, and a stiff butt.

It fits better with players who like the Project X profile but find it too stout.

The mid-section allows the shaft to deflect during swing giving it a little bent profile.

The shaft has a mid-launch profile with a medium spin and moderate tempo. KBS Tour is available in four different flex options too.

Project X vs KBS Tour: Which is Better?

Changing golf shafts can make little changes to the stick feel, these little modifications can have an immense effect on golf swings.

The Project X shaft is known and loved for its profile build, but some people really like their shafts being a bit flexible and not too rigid.

Project X LZ became the heeding call to their complaint offering them a shaft that is less stiff and compromising a percentage of the original Project X build.

Project X will be seen flying lower than LZ with less spin and thereby causing lesser dispersion, but this might feel hard to achieve in the hands of a player without much strength and a slow tempo.

The loading zone technology in the LZ was built to compensate for that.

Both products sell for 300+ a set, with little price difference.

Project X is a great product for players seeking pin-point accuracy and if the main and the LZ variant don’t feel just that perfect, Project X has a lot to offer.

Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Shaft Review – Specs, Flex, Weight

Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Shaft

Sure, with some shafts, you can get by without going in for a certified fitting.

But with others, it’s simply not advisable.

That’s because some shafts, like the Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts, need specific cutting instructions in order to unlock their true potential.

The Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts were designed to be custom-cut and custom-fitted.

That’s because there is a ton of performance potential packed into these relatively lightweight shafts.

If you were a fan of the original Rifle Flighted shafts, you owe it to yourself to read the following Rifle 105 Tour Flighted review.

Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Shaft Overview

The Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts are meant to be progressive shafts.

In other words, the flight gradually gets lower and more controlled as you move towards the short irons.

As you will see in the specs table below, you will also see that these are lightweight shafts. That’s important to note because these are, after all, steel shafts.

So if you have been wanting to improve accuracy by switching from graphite to steel shafts, these may be an ideal option for you.

Like nearly any Project X (a True Temper brand) shaft, the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts offer a very smooth transition.

The kick point is also progressive (so long as you go in for a certified fitting).

It was easy for our testers to load up on this shaft. Unloading felt just a little jerky; but it was nothing to be overly concerned about as it didn’t affect accuracy.

Overall you get a very lively response and the feeling that the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted is actually transferring your swing energy into the ball.

Why is the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted So Popular?

Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Shaft1

The Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shaft is a popular shaft because it works well for a wide variety of golfers.

As a mid handicapper, the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted can be optimized to match your distance needs.

As a low handicapper, you can increase accuracy with your scoring irons. So it offers a little something for everyone.

How Does the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Perform?

For the most part, our testers like long irons that produce a low launch. But none of our testers are pros.

The Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts actually produce a mid launch in the long irons and we can see why.

Mid launch is a nice middle ground for pros and amateurs. Pros want to be able to land greens with their longer irons so they need higher trajectories. But players like us need more distance above all else.

While the launch wasn’t terrible for us, we did lose out on a few yards with our long irons because of the higher trajectory.

However, the flight did work well for some of our higher handicap testers. When plugged into our short irons, the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts produced lower launch angles.

One of the things we really liked about this shaft is that it made for very controllable spin rates.

In our scoring irons, we were able to pick up more backspin when needed or mute the spin depending on the lie.

Overall, the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts are workable and we can see them performing well for a wide variety of players.

Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Shaft Specs

What flexes are available what swing speeds do they suit.

The Rifle 105 Tour Flighted is available in regular, stiff and extra stiff flex. Regular would be good for 80-85 MPH swingers.

Stiff would be good for 85-90 MPH swingers and extra siff would work for 91+ MPH swingers.

What Weights Are Available? What Swing Speeds Do They Suit?

There is a 107g version that would be suitable for players in the 80 MPH range.

The 108g version may work for 85-90 MPH swingers. The 113g version may suit 91-95 MPH swingers.

Why is it So Good?

For us, the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted was a good shaft because it was workable.

So long as you get a fitting, you will find that you can manipulate flight and spin. It may take some time to get used to; but once you do, you will find  that the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts are very versatile.

Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted First Impressions

Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Shaft2

One can’t help but notice how light and wieldy these shafts feel in the hands.

On the downswing, you feel like you can swing outside yourself. On release, you get a clear kick and feedback.

Key Features & Performance

The Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts feature a progressive kick point that is meant to flight the ball down in the short irons and produce a higher trajectory in the long irons.

Especially in the short irons, flight and spin can be manipulated and you get a sharper degree of control as opposed to the long irons.

Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Irons Review

For better players, the progressive kick point will be amazing.

But mid handicappers may be left in the lurch because of the lost distance in the long irons.

Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Wedges Review

This shaft works really well with wedges regardless of your handicap. It’s easy to achieve the spin you need and control trajectory.

Rifle 105 Tour Flighted Pros & Cons

  • Progressive launch
  • Active feel
  • Workable in the scoring irons
  • Smooth bend profile
  • Not great for mid handicappers

Overall Score: 95/100

Who Should Buy it?

Oddly enough, the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts would be good for high and scratch handicappers.

If you want to attack the pin with your long irons, these shafts will help.

And if you are a lower handicapper who has trouble getting air under the ball, you will get along well with the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts. Mid handicappers are likely to lose out on long iron distance.

KBS Tour Vs Project X – How Do They Compare?

KBS Tour Vs Project X

True Temper and KBS have been duking it out in the steel iron shaft space for many years now.

There is a staunch following on either side. In my personal experience, I find that KBS shafts usually play better for me.

But I have come across golfers who vow that they will never play a non-Project X shaft.

You should always go in for a fitting when changing shafts but in the following comparison overview, I will be breaking down the basic differences between the KBS Tour and Project X shafts.

KBS Tour Shaft Overview

project x tour shafts

“The KBS Tour shaft is available in regular, regular+, stiff, stiff+ and extra stiff flex. There are also 110g, 115g, 120g, 125g and 130g weights available.”

The first thing you should know about the KBS Tour shaft is that it tends to launch a bit higher than the Project X shaft.

There is also considerably more activity in the midsection than the Project X.

That’s not to say the KBS Tour is whippy. But I can feel the entire midsection flex more through transition compared to the Project X shaft.

The activity does fade a bit if you’re playing the 125g or 130g version; but it never goes away completely.

It has a classic stepped design and is mostly polished chrome save for the red band in the midsection.

Project Shaft Overview

project x tour shafts

“The Project X shaft is available in regular, regular plus, stiff, extra stiff and extra stiff+ flex. There are 110g, 115g, 120g, 125g, and 130g weights available.”

You can see that the weight and flex options are almost identical to the KBS Tour.

It’s clear that these shafts are in direct competition with one another. But the Project X shaft produces slightly less spin than the KBS Tour shaft.

As a result, the Project X tends to produce straighter ball flight.

It’s not that the KBS Tour is inaccurate; it’s just that it’s easier to get a draw or a fade out of the KBS Tour than it is with the Project X shaft.

The feel of the Project X shafts is also considerably stouter than the KBS Tour.

“If you have a fast swing speed and are looking for lower ball flight, the Project X will be the better shaft for you. If you need some help getting the ball in the air, the KBS Tour shaft would be better.”

KBS Tour First Impressions

project x tour shafts

“The KBS Tour shaft gave me the confidence to fire at will.”

Even on my most aggressive swings, I got the feeling that this was essentially a point-and-shoot shaft.

Project X 5.5 First Impressions

project x tour shafts

At first, we thought the Project X 5.5 felt a little stout. However, when we paired them with our irons, they let up a bit as we worked down the set.

Key Features & Performance

The most important feature is easily the tapered tip. The tapered area runs longer for enhanced energy transfer from your swing to the ball.

Project X 5.5 Wedges Review

A great choice for wedges because the Project X 5.5 will afford you more accuracy where you need it the most: around the green.

Project X 5.5 Irons Review

We would recommend fitting all of your irons with the Project X 5.5 shaft. The progressive kick point will appeal to better players who will feel the load shift throughout the set.

Project X 5.5 Driver Review

If you are a faster swinger, you will want a stiffer flex than the Project X 5.5 offers.

KBS Tour Pros & Cons

  • Extremely stable
  • Very tight dispersion
  • Takes strong loads very well
  • Stepped design

Project X 5.5 Pros & Cons

  • Stiff butt area
  • Great control
  • Not great for drivers
  • Not great for slow swing speeds.

Who Should Buy the KBS Tour?

project x tour shafts

“Players who demand ultimate stability on powerful loads.”

This is the shaft that can keep up with your most powerful swings and should fit heavy hitters like a glove.

project x tour shafts

Overall Score: 98/100

Who Should Buy it?

The Project X 5.5 would be perfect for players with a swing speed in the 95 MPH range.

It’s also ideal for more aggressive swingers looking for a shaft for their iron set.

Swing Speed: If you have a fast swing speed, a heavier and stiffer Project X shaft such as the Project X 6.5 may be a good choice for you. If your swing speed is moderate, Project X 6.0 may be more suitable. For a slower swing speed, the Project X 5.5 shaft may be the right choice.

Launch Angle: If you have a tendency to hit the ball low, you may want to consider the Project X High Launch shaft. If you prefer a lower ball flight, the standard Project X shaft may be more suitable.

Ball Flight: The Project X Rifle series is designed for a more consistent ball flight, while the standard Project X shaft provides a penetrating ball flight.

Shot Shape: If you tend to slice the ball, the Project X Rifle series may help you straighten out your shots due to its more consistent launch and spin characteristics. If you prefer to shape your shots, the standard Project X shaft may be more suitable.

Feel: The Project X Rifle series has a unique stepped profile design that provides a different feel compared to the standard Project X shaft. If you prefer a softer feel, the standard Project X shaft may be more suitable.

Choosing the Right Project X Shaft – Buying Guide

When it comes to choosing the right Project X shaft, there are a few factors to consider. The first is swing speed. If you have a fast swing speed, you may want to consider the Project X 6.5 shaft. If you have a slower swing speed, the Project X 5.5 or 6.0 may be a better fit.

Another important factor to consider is ball flight. If you tend to hit the ball too high, you may want to consider the Project X High Launch shaft. If you tend to hit the ball too low, the Project X shaft may help you get a higher ball flight.

Finally, you’ll want to consider your playing style and the type of shots you tend to hit. If you’re a player who likes to work the ball and control trajectory, the Project X Rifle shaft may be a good choice. If you’re looking for a shaft that provides stability and consistency, the standard Project X shaft may be the better option.

Ultimately, the best way to choose the right Project X shaft is to try out different options and see which one feels the most comfortable and consistent for your swing. It’s also a good idea to get a professional fitting to ensure you’re using the right shaft for your game.

I am trying to do some research on how many pros are using this shaft for their irons? I think Poulter does but can’t make anyone else. I am kind of surprised more guys don’t use it....? Anyone know of a good resource for iron shaft counts on tour? Thanks.

I have often been intrigued with the Project LZ shaft, having never hit one. I'm still hitting the Tour Issue DG AMT from the first release. Maybe it's time to get a second set of irons and put these in to try...

The ball speed I got the LZ made fitter look twice, it was that good. They have a really nice snap to them when you flush it. The weight changes with flex like other PX models, so that will be a factor. Overall I find them much easier to swing than standard PX but with a little flatter flight too. They seem to get up and just go. Worth a try, mizuno cart had the most flex options as most OEMs just have the 6.0 which is slightly too much for me, and I swing a 7 iron in the low 80’s. Usually a stiff in about everything but 5.5 felt more consistent for me to put a smooth swing on it, going after it didn’t seem to phase it but I don’t swing extra hard.

Bigjim1022

I love mine in my 785s.  I think it’s important to get fit or at least try them in the head your looking at.  I had them in a set of Ping 210s and while they felt great they ballooned like crazy, distance loss and spin were unreal.  Got fit into a heavier model and different head (785s) and flex (6.5 vs 6.0) and man what a difference.  Easy to swing, ball just jumps and flies high without ballooning but I can hit knockdowns too.  Really great shaft.

Does anyone know how the spin compares to dynamic gold? I’ve heard mizuno shaft optimizer often recommends these along with dynamic gold. I am looking for something similar to DG but with less spin and possibly less weight.

Spin going to depend a lot more on the loft/ iron head you use. Ball will make more of a difference than shaft, too.

If you're trying to modify spin with shaft, you probably won't alter it by more than 50-100rpm with all other factors equal (same ball, same strike location, same iron, same swing speed and so on).

I Preferred the Tour Elevate shafts for that “mid weight” shaft. Lz are good but if your tempo is off I find that your really loose balls left and right more with those mid bend soft flex.

This is an interesting comment because it’s something I’ve suspected too, primarily with the Modus 120 but also the LZ.

Anyone else find this? Or is it just in my imagination.

Need4spd

Interesting. Hard the believe AMT is that popular on tour. I think I’ve seen it maybe once in a WITB.

Separately, in two separate sessions hitting off a mat indoors, I went from Modus 120 X soft stepped once to Accra iSteel 125 also soft stepped. My 7i spin dropped dramatically. I admit I was surprised. Was spinning it in excess of 7K with Modus but only 6,500ish at most with Accra.

Project X HandCrafted shafts return with new HZRDUS T1100

project x tour shafts

Project X let us into the world of HandCrafted shafts with the 2015 HZRDUS Black shaft, which was a big success on professional tours and at retail. Almost 10 years later, we still come across some of those original HZRDUS Black and Yellow shafts in bags on the PGA Tour.

The HandCrafted label on a Project X shaft was the mark of high-end, low-volume manufacturing where the shaft was hand rolled in the company’s San Diego R&D lab. Since then, Project X retired that label and moved on to the “Small Batch” nomenclature. Many golf shaft degenerates have begged for Project X to bring back the HandCrafted shafts, and now, the squeaky wheels are getting the grease with a brand new Project X HZRDUS T1100 HandCrafted shaft.

“We are beyond excited to be able to bring back a HandCrafted line of graphite shafts,” Don Brown, Vice President of Marketing and Innovation for Project X said. “When producing a HandCrafted shaft, each shaft is rolled by hand, painted by hand and the logos are even applied by hand, all in our San Diego lab, ensuring the utmost care is taken along the way.”

project x tour shafts

The newest HandCrafted shaft is a reintroduction of the famed HZRDUS T1100 from 2017 (View our original launch story HERE ). The chrome ion finished HZRDUS T1100 was beloved by higher-speed players for its ultra-stiff profile with very low launch and spin. Toray T1100G carbon fiber was at the heart of the shaft and the strongest fiber available for Project X to create an ultra-stable shaft for the fastest swingers in golf.

project x tour shafts

The new 2024 Project X HZRDUS T1100 HandCrafted shaft will be low launch and low spin with a very stiff profile for the fastest swingers. 4D Optimized Carbon utilizes a spread tow weave that is used in specific parts of the shaft to enhance stability and control. This spread tow woven fabric is angled at 45 degrees through to increase torsional resistance in the shaft to control the twisting of the head during the swing. Each HZRDUS T1100 HandCrafted shaft is rolled in Project X’s San Diego Lab, like the original, and trimmed to final frequency to ensure consistent performance and precision.

Project X went with a graphics package that will pay homage to the original shaft with a HZRDUS logo done in silver with bright neon green outline in the middle of the shaft and the HandCrafted logo just below the grip. The shaft will have a silver sheen to it, but you will also be able to see the spread tow carbon fiber through the paint in the sun.

project x tour shafts

The new HZRDUS T1100 HandCrafted will be available in 60- and 70-gram weights with 6.0 (stiff) and 6.5 (X-stiff) flexes while the 80-gram model will only be available in the 6.5 flex.

We don’t have a retail date yet for these new HZRDUS shafts, as Project X can only create so many per day. The first ones have been sent to tour — we spotted them at this week’s Valero Texas Open . We will keep you updated on an official launch date.

As we reported earlier this year , Alex Dee, along with a group of industry veterans, have officially launched their own golf shaft company, leading with the Alpha One. Now you can get your hands on that shaft at Club Champion.

The Alpha One Blue and Gray series are debuting Aretera’s PowerGrid technology. Aretera is the first company to use spread tow woven carbon fabric in multiple layers at full length comprising over 50 percent of the shafts weight in design for maximum stability with a uniform feel.

project x tour shafts

These materials, novel in their application at this level, aim to offer high-level structural benefits compared to traditional unidirectional composites.

Speaking on the new shafts, Alex Dee stated:

“A lot of shafts have had to sacrifice feel to get stability. We’ve found ways to get it back. And it’s not a compromise.”

Aretera launches on April 1, 2024 at all Club Champion locations nationwide.

How to Buy the Nike Kobes Dropping for ‘Mamba Day’

Celebrating the anniversary of Kobe Bryant's final NBA game.

This Saturday will mark the eight-year anniversary of Kobe Bryant playing his final NBA game on April 13, 2016. To celebrate the illustrious career of the late Los Angeles Lakers guard, Nike has prepared three special Kobe releases that pay tribute to three key locations that helped mold him into one of the greatest basketball players ever.

The upcoming releases include rereleases of the "Philly" Kobe 4, the "Italian Camo" Kobe 6, and the "Venice Beach" Kobe 8. The Kobe 4 is inspired by the city of Philadelphia, the birthplace of Bryant, while the Kobe 6 pays homage to him moving to Italy with his family when he was a child. The Kobe 8 in the set celebrates Bryant's 20-year career in Los Angeles and the city's iconic Venice Beach.

April 13 isn't the only day of the year that "Mamba Day" is observed. Fans also celebrate "Mamba Day" annually on August 24, as the date represents both of Bryant's 8 and 24 jersey numbers.

Readers will be able to cop all three Nike Kobe Protro styles on Saturday, April 13, via SNKRS and at select Nike retailers for $190 each.

  2. Project X LZ Tour Graphite Iron Shaft Review

The Project X LZ Tour graphite iron shaft has a lot of its steel counterpart's performance characteristics but with the smoothness and weight of a graphite iron shaft. Introduction. Project X's tour-caliber 39-gram driver shaft. Certain numbers in sports have an almost mystical value to them, like running a mile in less than four minutes.
