Project X Steel Shafts for Irons

Project X is now also involved in the market for wood and driver shafts. However, this shaft became famous for its unique "rifle design" without the usual steps. Project X played a major role on the Tour from the very beginning with its basic low launch, low spin profile. Players like Rory McIlroy do not think about changing the shaft.

Meanwhile Project X is part of "True Temper", but has not lost any of its original concept. Over the years, more shafts have been added to the original Project X, most notably the Project X LZ, which is also very popular on Tour. But also off the Tour, Project X wants to continue with new shaft concepts such as the Project X IO or the Catalyst, a graphite shaft with the characteristics of steel shafts.

project x tour shafts

Project X Rifle

This shaft is constructed without steps and therefore has a unique design. However, this is not only an advantage in terms of design but also in terms of flex distribution and energy transfer. And this without having a negative influence on control. This stepless construction makes the tip very stiff and therefore provides more precision with optimal control of trajectory and spin.

The bend profile of the Project X is quite interesting and roughly comparable to the Nippon Modus 3 120 . The end of the grip is relatively soft and becomes stiffer as the grip progresses, in the middle very soft and in the tipp stiffer again. Exactly this stiff tip is decisive for the profile with low spin and low trajectory.

Project X LS

The Project X LS stands for low spin and further enhances the "low spin characteristic". The LS was just released in 2020 and has a brushed finish. Like the Project X Rifle it has no steps. The LS is even softer in the grip area than the Project X rifle. This makes it possible to make the other parts of the shaft even stiffer. Therefore the Project X LS is really only designed for very athletic players who swing very aggressively. The difference to the Project X rifle though is marginal and probably only noticeable for extremely good players.

Project X IO

This shaft concept is already known from the Dynamic Gold AMT shaft , where the shafts for longer irons are becoming lighter and lighter. Basically, we believe this concept is only useful for players who really struggle to launch the ball with long irons.

Project X LZ

The Loading Zone Technology makes this shaft unique and gives it its name: LZ. It enables a 7% greater transfer of energy to the ball and therefore ensures greater distances. This technology is not only visible in the club, but can also be seen in the conical steps from the grip through the middle section of the Project X LZ.

As far as the profile is concerned, the Project X LZ differs significantly from the Project X Rifle and is, for example, an alternative to the Nippon Modus 120. However, the profile of the LZ is much more pronounced than the Modus, namely very stiff in the lower part of the grip, very soft in the middle and again a stiff tip - the latter is the prerequisite for an overall low launch with little spin.

The stiffness of the shaft should not be underestimated and the LZ is even stiffer than the Project X rifle. That's why the Project X LZ in 7.0 is only available as a tour version and is played by Tommy Fleetwood, for example. For us normal mortals this variant is not available, but Project X 7.0 is.

Project X vs. Project X LZ - Our Review

When comparing the data, it quickly becomes apparent that the Project X LZ is a little stiffer than the Project X of the same rank. This means that a Project X 6.0 is about as stiff as the Project X LZ 5.5 - but also a little lighter. So if you generally tend towards lighter but stiffer, you should have found a candidate in the Project X LZ.

However, the differences are not dramatic. For our test, we nevertheless compared Project X 6.0 with Project X LZ 5.5 because these shafts have practically the same stiffness.

The results are as follows:

project x tour shafts

In terms of launch and spin, we would not find any differences based on this test. The Project X LZ shows a little more spin, but this is mainly due to the strike pattern. It makes no sense to classify one of the shafts with a higher launch or more spin. The big difference is in the profile and this is particularly evident in the transition. Our player got along much better with the Project X with its relatively aggressive transition from backswing to downswing. This is also reflected in the result and especially in the outliers that did not make it into our analysis. Our test player noticed relatively early on that the aggressive transition gets him into trouble more easily - which can also be seen directly in the dispersion. A large part of the balls were either slightly blocked or slightly closed. A typically poor strike pattern for good players who get to the ball from the inside. The comparison of Project X and Project X LZ is an example of how individual shafts can be. Another player might have achieved exactly the opposite result.

Rifle Tour Flighted 105 Shafts - Awesome Performance in a Lighter Weight

Rifle Tour Flighted 105 Shafts - Awesome Performance in a Lighter Weight

By DanSueltz December 10th, 2022

Rifle Tour Flighted 105 Shafts offer awesome performance in a lighter weight steel.  Available only through custom club fitters like True Fit Clubs, these shafts can be customized to meet today's golfers most demanding needs.

Lighter Weight

The Project X Rifle Tour Flighted 105 shafts come in three different weights:

R Flex  - 107 grams - Built flexes from L+(3.5) to R+(5.5)

S Flex - 108 grams - Built flexes from A+(4.5) to S(6.0)

X Flex - 113 grams - Built flexes from R(5.0) to S+(6.5)

These shafts are very customizable with a wide range of flexes in each shaft weight.

Flight and Spin Characteristics

The concept of "Tour Flighting" has been around for years.  Most tour players like higher trajectory in their long irons (3,4,5) but more penetrating ball flight in their scoring irons (8,9,PW).  That is exactly how the Project X Rifle Tour Flighted 105 irons are designed.  In our testing, the difference is not dramatic but noticeable enough to give better stopping power on longer iron shots into a green.

Flex                                          Trajectory                       Spin

R Flex                                    Mid-High                    Mid-High

S Flex                                     Mid-High                   Mid-High

Project X LZ Tour Graphite Iron Shaft Review

More in shafts:.

Newton Motion Fairway Wood Shaft

50 Words or Less

The Project X LZ Tour graphite iron shaft has a lot of its steel counterpart’s performance characteristics but with the smoothness and weight of a graphite iron shaft.

Introduction

I thought highly of the steel Project X LZ iron shaft I reviewed last year .  While the 120g steel LZ was good for a broad range of players, others might want a lighter shaft with similar performance.  To meet this demand, Project X released the LZ Tour graphite iron shaft.  The LZ Tour graphite iron shafts utilize a reduced stiffness in the midsection for maximum shaft load and weigh in at 90 grams.

Project-X-LZ-Graphite-Iron-8

For a graphite iron shaft, the Project X LZ Tour graphite shafts look so sweet.  The butt and tip sections are plain black, but the midsection has a weave pattern to it.  I can’t speak to whether or not the weave has any practical impact, but it showcases the “Loading Zone” concept and looks cool.  Project X uses their familiar silver and blue graphics which really pop on the black graphite.

Project-X-LZ-Graphite-Iron-9

This review was the first time I had ever hit a Project X graphite iron shaft of any type.  Given Project X’s excellent reputation I wasn’t too concerned about how they would perform, but I was curious how they would feel.  Comparing to the steel LZ iron shaft, I think the graphite shaft’s kick is a little smoother.  The steel LZ has a notable pop whereas the graphite LZ has a smoother release.   I tested the graphite LZ in a Callaway Apex MB, and the graphite absorbed a lot of shock on mishits.  Despite being graphite, the LZ Tour is still very responsive.

Project-X-LZ-Graphite-Iron-3

Performance

True to Project X ‘s advertisement, the LZ Tour graphite iron shaft has a mid-launch with low spin.  The LZ Tour isn’t the lowest spinning shaft I’ve hit, but I wasn’t seeing many balls zip back on the greens.  The trajectory was right   in the middle which made the LZ extremely controllable.   If you’re starting from the middle, it’s much less work to flight the ball up or down as needed.  Naturally, this made managing the wind much easier.

Finally, I want to talk punch shots.  I’m not ashamed to admit that when I played a full round with the LZ Tour shafts, I had to work from under trees a few times.  The LZ Tour graphite shafts may be the best punch shot shaft I’ve ever hit.   Something about them made it feel effortless.  The analogy may be tough to relate to, but it felt like throwing a saucer pass in hockey.  All it took was pulling the club back and flicking it forward to punch the ball right on target.  This made a very lasting impression on me and is a testament to the LZ Tour’s playability.

Project-X-LZ-Graphite-Iron-2

The lighter graphite Project X LZ Tour aren’t exactly apples-to-apples with their steel counterparts, but they’re a great shaft.  Their performance is similar, but the lighter weight and smoother feel sets the graphite LZ Tour apart.  If feeling that kick is less important to you and you’re looking for something a bit easier to play with great feel, consider the Project X LZ Tour graphite iron shafts.

What is the difference between the 5.0 and 6.0 shafts? Flex?

' src=

Yes, Project X denotes flex with numbers: 4.5, 5.0, 5.5, etc.

' src=

How does the LZ Graphite 6.0 compare to Recoil F4 95?

' src=

I’ve never hit the Recoil so I couldn’t even come close to speaking to that comparison.

' src=

I built up a Hot Metal Pro 7i in each of those (and also hit the LZ 5.0). The LZ 6.0 is a bit more lively than the Recoil. The 5.0 is much more lively, but with my swing I felt a little too much movement at the top of the swing. Both the LZ and Recoil and great shafts, I went LZ in the rest of the irons as I like that little bit of extra feel. I also think the matte black looks way better than the “iron-like” finish on the Recoils.

' src=

I currently have 825 pros I’m looking for new iron and a lighter shaft I demoed some ap3 I hit the 7 iron with a ball flight of 110 ft then hit my 7 with ball flight of 106 my current shaft is 120 gram I know a lighter shaft promotes higher ball flight will the project x lz tour graphite keep ball fight the same or lower it any?

I genuinely can’t answer that question for you. You would have to see how you hit it on the monitor and what impact it would have on your specific swing. If I were to advise either direction, it would be irresponsible. My suggestion is to be properly fit for the shaft, especially if you’re looking to make a significant change.

I just want to give you guys props for nice reviews. I have been trying to find reviews on different graphite shafts and time after time yours come up. When I look for something on the other popular sites all I get is forum threads with very little real info just a bunch of comments on looks or whatever. This review lead me to getting these shafts and putting them in a set of Srixon Z565s should be a good combo.

Thanks! That means a great deal to us.

I thought I would do a follow up on these shafts after hitting them on the range for the first time. I wanted to go to graphite for my sore elbows but I didn’t want to go super light so these were a good step from 105 weight irons. Very smooth feel and great ball flight with my long and mid irons. I was hitting my 7 iron arrow straight time after time. This was the first time I could hit a full set of them and I was surprised at how high I was hitting my PW. I think the next step is to take them in for gap testing. I was wondering if you noticed any issues like this when you fit someone into these? At first I thought I might put these in my wedges to be consistent through the set but now I’m puzzled by that ball flight. With their mid kick point they seem like they might be a good wedge shaft. Perhaps they are such a different beast from steel I will need to learn a different way to play my wedges.

' src=

Is the project XL Z graphite shaft for irons a high launch shaft . Thanks

' src=

I am look to get my daughter some new shafts that are senior flex. Are Project X Iron 4.5 flex a senior flex or a ladies flex?

The conventional wisdom puts a 6.0 as a stiff, 5.5 as a regular, 5.0 as a senior flex, and 4.5 as ladies.

' src=

I have the PX LZ tour 5.0s in a set of Mizuno MP-54s. I personally love the ball flight. I was usually a mid ball flight guy with my KBS tour 90s, but with the LZs the flight is mid/high. And i have gained 8 yards carry. I went from 158y, to 166 yards carry. And the feel is awesome. I just bought a second set of the LZs before they become scarce.

' src=

I’m playing the 6.0 in a split set of 919s…and I can definitely agree with the comments on punch shots….I used to play a lot of links, so naturally have a low punch as a go to….in fact the punch shots with these shafts is so good, I find myself going with it pretty often from the middle of the fairway and despite no wind

' src=

I am a golfer that usually is in the reg flex steel shaft domain with now a slower swing speed in low nineties.. Is this a ‘traditional’ graphite shaft for slow swing speeds, older golfers… or? What is the target market for this graphite shaft? (90gm, mid section with less stiffness) Bottom line, I was considering purchasing these irons and leaving this shaft in the 4,5, and 6.. (and changing the 7, 8, with a reg flex steel shaft and perhaps a stiff PW. ‘Experienced’ not ‘Speculative’ thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

This is somewhere in between a “conventional” graphite iron shaft and a “Tour” graphite iron shaft. The best advice is to get fit before buying new irons so you know what actually works for your swing.

' src=

hello, I’m between buying the project x lz and the catalyst 60 Which is the better shaft? Thanks.

Neither is objectively better, you need to get fit to find out which one is better for you.

' src=

I was just wondering about swing weight differences with these shafts as replacements for my current steel 6.0 LZ’s? I like my currents but the body is getting older. I still have club head speed, just looking for something easier on the body. Would I need to be adding weight to the heads with these? D1or 2 now. I may be mixing up my adding or subtracting weight according to the shaft weight. I’d have to look at my notes since I haven’t tinkered in awhile. Thank you for any suggestions and your expertice. Clay

I’m not certain about how the weight is distributed in these. Generally, moving to lighter shafts requires adding weight to the club head to maintain swing weight.

Introduction

From http://www.royalprecision.com

“The all-new Project X PXv Tour 52 is the next generation in the storied Project X franchise. By incorporating the most advanced materials available in the industry today, Project X engineers have designed a shaft that produces maximum ball speed, while preserving critical stability and control through the hitting zone. PXv Tour 52 delivers a low-mid launch angle with low spin, preferred by today's top professionals and low handicap amateurs.

The PXv Tour shaft incorporates the PXv technology into a heavier weight shaft. It is the perfect complimenting fairway wood design to the PXv Tour 52 and also a great option For players seeking a slightly heavier driver shaft.”

Being as I'd always used my gamer as a guinea pig (why not use the driver you hit all the time to do testing), this comparison testing would be done using the same ideals as I always use. It's pointless, IMO, to change any variable except the shaft when doing testing on a shaft and a shaft only. Why? Tolerances in heads being what they are, you don't get a true feel for the shaft if there are any variables outside of the shaft(again, my opinion). I also blow the grip off my gamer when doing shaft testing so I know that it's an identical grip. So going into this, I knew that to test this properly, I'd be using my gamer, so that impressions are fair and unbiased. This shaft arrived around 3 months ago in prototype trim, and I've been testing since then.

Feel, Build Notes, Miscellaneous

That driver head? A Tour Issued TaylorMade Superfast 2.0 version 2 LCG with a marked loft of 8.5 degrees. After having it digitally lofted, I can say that the actual loft on this head is 8.9 degrees and the face angle is 2.1 degrees open. The head had also been hotmelted to 203 grams prior to my receiving it(I didn't weigh it, but it's heavier than the v2 I had before). I did use a heatgun to move the hotmelt low and deep in the head (and I got too close to the paint once and ended up scorching part of the red line on the underside, lol).

Now, with the part about the head out of the way, I must state I got this shaft in prototype paint. The paint version I got, there were 6 prototypes that True Temper did (across all of their brands) that have this particular prototype paint scheme. Doesn't mean it's a different shaft, just the test group got their own prototype paint scheme. It was cool to me, so I thought it worth mentioning.

On to the build. I initially did testing in prototype trim. There was a reason behind this, True Temper didn't want any of us to know what shaft we were getting, they wanted raw impressions of the shaft and it's performance. They also sent us build instructions, which mine said for a straight in install with no additional tipping and then cut to length. There were 2 of the 6 of us that got instructions for tipping for the shaft that was sent. Mine, however, was a straight in install.

So I prepped the (at the time) unknown shaft and then spined and FLO'd it. It came out graphics down, so that's the way it was installed (spine on the bottom to mitigate shaft droop, NBP at 3:00). Once the epoxy set, it was then chopped off at 44.5” and the Lamkin PerformancePlus 3gen was slapped on. The completed club came out to D3.5 and turned out that I had to do NOTHING to get it within the swingweight range I prefer (D3-D4). I like being able to feel where the head is at all throughout the swing. This one delivered that spot on for me.

The only note I'd like to add here is that I did my customary waggle test. The shaft had a distinct slight whippiness to it. Not noodle whippy, but also not firm like lots of shafts I've been playing have been as well. I had some initial reservations with this being the case, as I have always liked the snappy feeling instead of whippy. This one was somewhere between there. But, as has been the case with all of my shaft testing I've done, I've trusted those that have advised me on shafts and builds to be spot on with their build instructions. This one was no different, as the waggle test is only a feel test and not a performance test anyway.

Performance(Feel, Flight, Visual)

Visually, this shaft was in prototype trim when I initially received it, and matte black with a prototype logo really isn't anything too speak of. Now ,however, since I have the retail graphics version in my possession, I can say that I love the visual of this shaft. It's white with a minimalistic pearl in it and the graphics aren't overwhelming. They keep the traditional ProjectX tribal and accented that with the bright ProjectX logo. Not completely simple, but simple enough to be elegant and non-distracting.

Now, on to the range session. The first few swings were without a ball there at all, just trying to get a feel for where in the swing the shaft unloaded and loaded at. It loaded smoothly at the top, and unloaded with just a hint of a kick at impact. I wasn't really going after it, as I was just trying to get a feel for the shaft. I had a feeling of where it was unloading and it was time for ball to meet face.

I began by hitting a few balls with a 75% swing, again, trying to get a feel for the shaft. Then, once I had a good idea at where it loaded and unloaded with the ball in the way, it was time to take normal swings with it (85%, I don't go all out unless I need a forced carry or a wide, open landing area as I tend to get a little sloppy). The shaft was performing well. Shots were staying relatively straight, and the launch angle was about where I like it, visually. The ball seemed to react well upon landing as well. The only thing was when I went after it a little, it tended to get a little sloppy in the tip section. I now know why, because it was a 6.0 and I really like a 6.5 flex. Upon receiving the retail graphics version, I've decided, after talking with our contact at True Temper, that I will be tipping it 1/2” to tighten that up just a bit. I believe this will also straighten out the ones that I tended to overcook when drawing or fading the ball as well. That said, I was still very pleased with the balance and smooth feeling of the shaft throughout the swing and the distinct snap at impact I was getting as it unloaded.

Swing Speed: 114.1 mph

Spin(RPM): 2875

Launch Angle:14.1

Ball Speed: 167.2

Smash Factor: 1.47

Distance (Carry): 281.8 yards

The above numbers were pulled using a Vector Pro launch monitor. The Trackman I had access to, everyone I know that was a member at that country club has since dropped their membership (this particular club is losing members like crazy because of a few issues, and I knew around 15 members that have since dropped their membership). Regardless, the above numbers represent around where my averages have been for quite a while now, as it's relatively similar to my numbers I've been pulling. The launch angle and spin rates, IMO, could likely be attributed to the tip being just a little sloppy. I believe these will improve once I tip the next version of this shaft to tighten that up.

I've now played around 18-20 rounds with this shaft (sorry, didn't keep an exact count). I can say that I've been impressed with this shaft. It's rare that you find a lighter weight shaft, IMO, that keeps up with higher swing speeds (not saying mine is awful high, but it's above average SS). I've always kind of struggled with lighter weight shafts, as they tend to want to get overly whippy to me in terms of feel. This shaft, while feeling whippy when waggling it, is smooth and doesn't feel whippy at all during the swing. I believe when the proper flex is achieved, this sucker will tighten up a lot throughout the swing. Regardless, it loads and unloads distinctly, and the results are great, IMO, for me when hitting balls. I've lost maybe 3 balls during rounds and nothing would've saved those. My last 3 rounds, I've found the fairway 10 times on average in those rounds. I've gotten more and more used to this shaft, but I want to see what happens when I switch it out for the retail graphics model with 1/2” tipping. I believe it'll improve distance just a touch, and more distance is always fun right?

Final Thoughts

One version or another (retail or prototype graphics) of this shaft will likely be staying in the gamer for the forseeable future. I'm pleased with how it reacts, and if I'm being honest, I hope the retail graphics model is the one that sticks, as I think it's gonna look beautiful with the white head, white shaft and I'll end up slapping a white Lamkin on it most likely (paint and performance both matter to me, lol).

Very nice and comprehensive review. I had mine arrive the week before last, but due to the snow here in the UK, I haven't had a chance to test drive it yet. For info, I have had mine tipped 1/2 inch and it doesn't feel sloppy at all, nice 'snap' at impact, and very stable, but with enough feel under the grip not to feel harsh or boardy. But that was from just swinging it in my back garden in the snow, so hardly a fair test until my local golf range reopens again for business, and I can actually get ball on clubface. More to come.

Very nice review. I am curious if you have used any Project X shafts in the past and if so, how you would compare it to the older versions.

I am curious if you have used any Project X shafts in the past and if so, how you would compare it to the older versions.
The feel on this one is different than any of their others I've tried (PX Black, review is on here, and 6A4). This one is the smoothest feeling PX I've tried. I really like the shaft.
Great, thanks, sounds really good. Notice any variations in spin or launch angle, or any ballflight differences from the prevoius ones ?
Spins less than the PX Black for me. LA was a tad high on this one because of the tip being just a hair loose for me. I plan to see what happens when tipping the retail graphics one.

Great review as always!! I'm interested to see how popular this is on tour seeing that light weight shafts seem to be getting more and more use...

Nice review. Is the 6.0 tipped what TT agreed was good for your swing or would a 6.5 have been better? I have previously had a good experience with the 7A3, which is a 7.0, and was going to try the PXv in 6.5. Thanks. Edit - I used their fitting tool and it said PXv 6.5 too, not that it's the only thing to go by. http://www.shaftfit....t/frFindFit.php

Project X Shafts Reviewed – Are They Any Good?

project x tour shafts

As a brand of True Temper – the makers of arguably the most popular iron shaft in the world – Project X shafts get a good deal of attention.

And for good reason. Project X shafts have been called some of the most stable and smooth shafts on the market.

There’s no question about the quality of Project X shafts. The only issue comes in the form of variety. There are a lot of different Project X shafts to choose from which can make it difficult to select the one that is perfect for your game. But in the following list, we will break down some of the most popular Project X shafts and tell you what kind of player they suit.

Project X LZ Shaft Review

project x tour shafts

Selling Points:

 • Variable wall technology
 • Active midsection
 • Firm but and tip section

The Project X LZ shaft comes in 110g, 115g, 120g and 125g versions. With the LZ, it seems that Project X was trying to appeal to as many players as possible. That’s because it isn’t as stout as other Project X shafts; but it still offers a high degree of stability. It has a very smooth transition that invites you to swing outside of yourself and in the heavier weights, can keep up with aggressive transitions. Dispersion is tight and the flight can be worked from mid to high.

Who is it for?

The Project X LZ is a great fit for mid handicappers who are trying to avoid the overt stiffness of steel iron shafts. It can still keep up with fast swing speed players though – just make sure you get the heavier versions.

Project X LZ Options

 • Regular flex
 • Regular+ flex
 • Extra stiff flex

Pros & Cons

 • Very smooth transition
 • Stepless design
 • Controlled spin
 • The midsection can feel a bit noodly

Overall Score: 98/100

Project X IO Shaft Review

project x tour shafts

 • Progressive weighting
 • Mid/low launch
 • Brushed steel finish

The best thing about the IO shafts is the progressive weighting. This makes the long irons more manageable and adds stability to the short irons. Performance is dynamic: you get the speed you need from the long irons and acute launch/distance control in the short irons. The IO shafts don’t have a very stout feel. Instead, you can feel the shaft load and release clearly in the midsection.

The Project X IO shaft is a great fit for players who found the original Project X shafts a bit too stiff.

Project X IO Options

 • 105g, 110g, 115g weight
 • Easy to activate
 • Good distance
 • Good control
 • Not great for 95+ MPH swing speeds

Overall Score: 96/100

Project x riptide shaft review.

project x tour shafts

 • Torsional stability optimization

When I first tested the Project X Riptide, the first thing I noticed was the weight. This is a very light driver shaft with a very active feel. Club head speed was 100+ MPH on almost all my swings and carry distance was consistently in the 250-yard range. My only gripe was that the flight was a bit erratic.

The Project X Riptide shaft is a great option for slow swing speed players who want to improve their smash factor and distance.

Project X Riptide Options

 • Regular+, stiff and extra stiff flex
 • Counterbalanced version available
 • Lightweight
 • Good carry distance
 • Good stopping power
 • Unpredictable flight

Overall Score: 95/100

Project x evenflow shaft review.

project x tour shafts

 • Even bend profile
 • Smooth transition
 • Efficient swing energy transfer

The Project X Evenflow feels active through the whole shaft. Of all the Project X shafts, I felt like this one was transferring my swing energy the most efficiently. You can feel the whole shaft bend and convey your swing power to the ball. The active feel remains controlled; but still may not be favored by heavy hitters.

The Project X Evenflow is a good choice for players with deliberate tempos and swing speeds within 75 and 90 MPH.

Project X Evenflow Options

 • Black and Blue versions
 • 65g weight class
 • 75g weight class
 • Low spin version available
 • Effortless club head speed
 • Good for deliberate tempos
 • Not great for aggressive tempos

Overall Score: 97/100

Project x ls shaft review.

project x tour shafts

 • Low spin design
 • Matte gray finish
 • Stiff profile

The Project X LS is not for the faint of heart. This is a steel iron shaft on the heavy and stout side. There is only a feeble kick so even when you swing out of your shoes, you can keep track of the club head every step of the way. The spin stays low as advertised so you have to be a bit careful about rollout. In general though, this is a very accurate and durable shaft. Very tight dispersion and low flight.

The Project X LS is definitely for 95+ MPH swing speed players who need a shaft that can keep dispersion tight even with a very aggressive tempo.

Project X LS Options

 • Stiff, extra stiff, tour extra stiff flex
 • 120g, 125g, 130g weights
 • Very stable
 • Great for fast swingers
 • Very workable
 • Harsh feel on mis-hits

Project X Cypher Shaft Review

project x tour shafts

 • Low resin design
 • Iron or wood versions

With my driver, the Project X Cypher produced high launch and surprisingly low spin for a shaft of this weight. It feels fast on the downswing and you can feel the bend point just below the grip section. The low spin kept dispersion tight and produced long rollouts. And for my swing, the low spin/high launch combo produced carry distances that were consistently in 260 yard range.

The Project X Cypher is a good driver shaft for players who are seeking more distance and who want to find the heart of the fairway consistently.

Project X Cypher Options

 • Senior, regular+, regular and stiff flex
 • 47g, 48g, 49g weight
 • Wood or iron shafts
 • Good smash factor
 • A bit whippy

Project X HZRDUS Smoke Shaft Review

project x tour shafts

The “Smoke” line of shafts come in red, green and black versions. The HZRDUS Green is the stoutest, lowest-spinning version. The HZRDUS Smoke Red is the highest-launching version and the HZRDUS Smoke Black is the middle launch/spin version. All iterations of the HZRDUS Smoke line feature a very smooth transition that Project X has become known for. And there is a lack of harsh vibration on mis-hits in every version.

The Project X HZRDUS Smoke line of driver shafts should be looked at by pretty much every type of player. It can accommodate fast, slow and intermediate swing speeds.

Project X HZRDUS Smoke Options

 • Black, Red and Green versions
 • Counter-balanced option
 • Driver and wood shafts
 • There’s a version for almost every type of player
 • Very forgiving on mis-hits
 • Smooth feel
 • A bit pricey

Are Project X iron shafts any good?

Project X makes some of the stablest, stepless iron shafts on the market. They are known for their accuracy and smooth feel through loading and release.

What about their driver shafts?

Project X HZRDUS and Evenflow driver shafts are used as stock shafts by the biggest golf club manufacturers in the world. The great thing about Project X driver shafts is that there is one for pretty much every kind of player.

Do any pros use Project X shafts?

Yes. Over the years many Tour pros have plugged Project X shafts into their woods or irons. Some of the most notable players who use or have used Project X shafts include Brooks Koepka, Rory Mcllroy, Justin Thomas, Justin Rose, Adam Svensson, Daniel Berger, Martin Laird and Thomas Pieters.

How stiff are Project X shafts?

Project X shafts come in a wide variety of flexes that typically range from senior to tour extra stiff. The original Project X iron shaft is known for feeling pretty stiff; but recent Project X iron shafts have a much more inviting and active feel. It all depends on the model and the weight/flex you choose.

Where are Project X shafts made?

Project X has a manufacturing facility in San Diego, CA. Some of their shafts may be produced elsewhere but the company states that all of their shafts are made in the US.

What swing speed are Project X shafts for?

The original Project X iron shafts were made specifically with faster swingers in mind. But in 2023, Project X produces wood and iron shafts for all types of swing speeds. For example, the Project X LS is made for 90+ MPH swingers while the Project X Evenflow line of shafts is congenial to slow/moderate swing speed players.

KBS Tour Vs Project X – How Do They Compare?

KBS Tour Vs Project X

True Temper and KBS have been duking it out in the steel iron shaft space for many years now.

There is a staunch following on either side. In my personal experience, I find that KBS shafts usually play better for me.

But I have come across golfers who vow that they will never play a non-Project X shaft.

You should always go in for a fitting when changing shafts but in the following comparison overview, I will be breaking down the basic differences between the KBS Tour and Project X shafts.

KBS Tour Shaft Overview

project x tour shafts

“The KBS Tour shaft is available in regular, regular+, stiff, stiff+ and extra stiff flex. There are also 110g, 115g, 120g, 125g and 130g weights available.”

The first thing you should know about the KBS Tour shaft is that it tends to launch a bit higher than the Project X shaft.

There is also considerably more activity in the midsection than the Project X.

That’s not to say the KBS Tour is whippy. But I can feel the entire midsection flex more through transition compared to the Project X shaft.

The activity does fade a bit if you’re playing the 125g or 130g version; but it never goes away completely.

It has a classic stepped design and is mostly polished chrome save for the red band in the midsection.

Project Shaft Overview

project x tour shafts

“The Project X shaft is available in regular, regular plus, stiff, extra stiff and extra stiff+ flex. There are 110g, 115g, 120g, 125g, and 130g weights available.”

You can see that the weight and flex options are almost identical to the KBS Tour.

It’s clear that these shafts are in direct competition with one another. But the Project X shaft produces slightly less spin than the KBS Tour shaft.

As a result, the Project X tends to produce straighter ball flight.

It’s not that the KBS Tour is inaccurate; it’s just that it’s easier to get a draw or a fade out of the KBS Tour than it is with the Project X shaft.

The feel of the Project X shafts is also considerably stouter than the KBS Tour.

“If you have a fast swing speed and are looking for lower ball flight, the Project X will be the better shaft for you. If you need some help getting the ball in the air, the KBS Tour shaft would be better.”

KBS Tour First Impressions

project x tour shafts

“The KBS Tour shaft gave me the confidence to fire at will.”

Even on my most aggressive swings, I got the feeling that this was essentially a point-and-shoot shaft.

Project X 5.5 First Impressions

project x tour shafts

At first, we thought the Project X 5.5 felt a little stout. However, when we paired them with our irons, they let up a bit as we worked down the set.

Key Features & Performance

The most important feature is easily the tapered tip. The tapered area runs longer for enhanced energy transfer from your swing to the ball.

Project X 5.5 Wedges Review

A great choice for wedges because the Project X 5.5 will afford you more accuracy where you need it the most: around the green.

Project X 5.5 Irons Review

We would recommend fitting all of your irons with the Project X 5.5 shaft. The progressive kick point will appeal to better players who will feel the load shift throughout the set.

Project X 5.5 Driver Review

If you are a faster swinger, you will want a stiffer flex than the Project X 5.5 offers.

KBS Tour Pros & Cons

 • Extremely stable
 • Very tight dispersion
 • Takes strong loads very well
 • Stepped design

Project X 5.5 Pros & Cons

 • Stiff butt area
 • Great control
 • Not great for drivers
 • Not great for slow swing speeds.

Who Should Buy the KBS Tour?

project x tour shafts

“Players who demand ultimate stability on powerful loads.”

This is the shaft that can keep up with your most powerful swings and should fit heavy hitters like a glove.

Overall Score: 98/100

Who Should Buy it?

The Project X 5.5 would be perfect for players with a swing speed in the 95 MPH range.

It’s also ideal for more aggressive swingers looking for a shaft for their iron set.

Project X Rifle 105 Tour Flighted .370" Steel Iron Shafts

Description.

The Project X 105 Rifle Tour Flighted iron shafts are lightweight version of the original Rifle Flighted profile. Many players struggle optimizing trajectories throughout their iron set — oftentimes sacrificing control in the short irons to achieve more trajectory in the long irons.

Rifle 105 Tour Flighted combines a unique design with specific tip-trim instructions that creates a progressive kick point throughout the set to manipulate ball flight and product optimal trajectories depending on specific club choice. This allows for a flighted set—offering a mid–high trajectory in the longer irons, a mid trajectory in the middle irons and a mid–low trajectory in the scoring irons.

 • Lightweight version of the original Rifle Flighted profile
 • Features a progressive kick point to manipulate ball flight and produce optimal trajectories for each club within the set
 • Designed for players who struggle to optimize trajectories in their irons
 • Progressive design delivers higher trajectories in the mid and long irons and controllable trajectories in the short irons
 • Note: * Weight listed in spec box below is the trimmed weight of the golf shafts
 • Note: ** Additional trimming required on the Rifle 105 Tour Flighted shafts for AW, GW and SW wedges - For AW wedge trim 5 1/8", GW trim 5 3/8" and SW trim 5 5/8"

Project X Drivers

Project X Shafts the Best Graphite Shafts

Project X Hybrids

The Project X Hybrids are some of the best in their class. These are more for the aggressive golfer and deliver longer distances without sacrificing control. The various styles and designs offer increased stiffness down the entire length of the shaft. They provide a low spin and launch profile to keep you in control of the ball. Project X Shafts have a robust flow of energy that is smooth while delivering some serious distance.

Project X Irons

Project X Irons, are some of the most well-studied Irons around. Players love Project X Irons because they deliver maximum shaft load during the downswing. The shaft load allows for better transfer of energy to the ball. In simple terms, these will accurately make your ball fly far with ease. And, that's pretty much what most players desire. Will they help me get better at the game? Yes, Project X Shafts are built to help you with your golf game
