Canadian Rockies: National Parks Westbound

Had a great time, our guide Jeremy was excellent with a lot of local knowledge! Some of the hikes were a bit challenging for a couple of us and we were slower but the rest of the group and guide were great about waiting for us and making sure we were doing okay. Great camping experience would definitely recommend!

Orcas and Grizzlies Wildlife Tour Tour

Orcas and Grizzlies Wildlife Tour

Note this is not a tour of a fixed group of participants with a professional guide. It is an itinerary composed of separate events which could be undertaken by groups, couples or like me an individual. Every aspect of this "tour" was organised to perfection and the notes provided exact details of what, where and how to expect things. There was no problem with flights, taxis, ferries or specialist providers. I loved the accommodation as I was made to feel I was wanted there and every assistance was provided. The local features at Alert Bay are worthwhile and the Cultural Centre is outstanding. Taxis are available on this small island but the best transport is walking to enjoy the local atmosphere. The one star missing for "overall" is because no warning was given that whales and grizzlies may not be seen as that is a seasonal thing which should be checked before booking.

The 2 week camping tour of BC and Alberta was absolutely amazing. Marco was a fantastic guide, great cook, very friendly and knowledgable. He created an atmosphere that facilitated the entire group getting along and having an enjoyable time together. I'd highly recommend the tour and Marco as guide to anyone. Thanks for a great few weeks!

Excellent tour guide and bus driver. The tour interesting and well organized. The hotels and meals were very good . Everything ran like clock work. The" box breakfast" was especially appreciated as we had to leave our hotel at 2:30 am for our flight home and it would have been hard to get anything to eat in the time we had.

Truly stunning mountain scenery through the Rockies to Vancouver with guest appearances from bears, elk, eagles and gophers! A well paced and organised trip led by an excellent guide Sibylle. Travelling in style on the Rocky Mountaineer was a memorable experience, even though we were in Silver Leaf. A class operation. A minor gripe that there was so little time at the end of the tour in Vancouver and Vancouver Island, luckily we added a couple of extra nights in Vancouver to explore the city.

Tour guide was excellent. Not happy with your advertising as it really is only 5 days of sightseeing. Some hotels were a distance from places to eat.
This trip was the best experience of my life so far! My CEO Melanie was so amazing, I felt so at ease and happy throughout every step of the tour. This is the perfect trip to see some of Canada. 100000/10 would recommend to everyone!

People walking along a trail stop to watch a Bull Moose during the rut in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada

People walking along a trail stop to watch a Bull Moose during the rut in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Canada

Whether you’re keen to spot the mysterious spirit bear or listen to the songs of beluga whales, Canada’s varied terrain offers dozens of wildlife adventures that are bound to leave you in awe.

Canada's sprawling forests, arctic tundras and desert landscapes provide ample opportunity to spot furry critters in the wild. So grab your camera and a good pair of boots and set out for a few of the best places to see Canada’s incredible wildlife in their natural habitats.

A family of polar bears behind ice

Marvel at the power of polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba

Best time to go: July to November

With over 900-1000 polar bears in the area , Churchill is the world's polar bear capital.

Every year in late July or early August, the ice melts in Hudson’s Bay, drawing hundreds of local polar bears further inland until the bay freezes again.

This three-to-four-month period is prime for polar bear spotting. During the late summer, polar bears are calmer and are often spotted lounging in the fireweed or wandering the shoreline. But when November and the big freeze get closer, the bears become more active as they eagerly await their winter seal hunt.

Several Churchill tours, like Churchill Wild’s polar bear safaris, offer experiences ranging from tundra vehicle and walking tours to boat and helicopter tours. Most tours are full days, lasting around eight hours.

All polar bear experiences adhere to strict guidelines prioritizing the safety and well-being of the polar bears and the tourists. You should always go with a knowledgeable polar bear guide and educate yourself on polar bear protocol.

Local tip: This part of Canada is frigid, especially if you’re visiting later in the season as the bears get ready to head north to hunt. Make sure to pack appropriately: plan for lots of layers and look for insulated and waterproof outwear to stay warm and dry during your viewing.

The best time to visit Canada

Spirit Bear Cub playing peek a boo from behind a tree

Search for the mysterious spirit bears at the Great Bear Rainforest, British Columbia

Best time to go: June to October

Spirit bears are one of the most unique animals found in Canada. Also known as Kermode bears, they are a rare subspecies of the American black bear that get their all-white coloring from recessive genes. They’re sacred to and protected by the First Nations people of Canada and can only be found in the Great Bear Rainforest on the coast of British Columbia .

The Great Bear Rainforest is a remote protected area mainly accessible by boat or float plane. There’s plenty of Canadian wildlife to see in this temperate rainforest. The landscape alone, which includes natural hot springs, waterfalls and glacial fjords, will leave you stunned.

But, without a doubt, the highlight of a visit to this region is spotting a spirit bear. There's a chance you might see these elusive bears anytime from June to October, but they are best seen from August to September during the annual salmon run. They are nocturnal, so day and nighttime sightings are both fair game.

Local tip: Bears are adorable-looking creatures, but remember that they are wild and potentially dangerous animals. It’s advised to brief yourself on bear safety before your adventures and be sure to always follow and listen to your guide.

Explore Canada’s great outdoors on these hiking trails

Observe narwhals from a floe edge in Nunavut

Best time to go: mid-May to mid-June

Narwhals love the Great White North. Sometimes called the “unicorn of the sea,” thanks to their singular long tusk, it’s estimated that 90% of the world’s narwhal population can be found in Canada’s arctic waters. The cool waters provide the perfect habit for the whales to feed and rear their young.

Narwhals stay mainly between Northern Hudson’s Bay and Ellesmere Island in Nunavut . The best place to spot them is from the floe edge, where the open water meets the ice still attached to the shoreline. The floe edge only lasts about four weeks, from mid-May to mid-June, before it melts away for the summer.

Floe edge safaris like those with Arctic Kingdom allow tourists to observe narwhals as they feed and swim at the ice's edge.

Local tip: Bring a GoPro and extension pole that you can stick underwater at the floe edge for some potentially epic footage of narwhals and other arctic sea life below the surface.

Listen to beluga whales sing in Churchill, Manitoba

Best time to go: June to September

Polar bears aren’t the only Canadian wildlife that Churchill is known for. This remote part of the country is also home to a large population of beluga whales.

About 136,000 beluga whales (2/3 of the world’s population) can be found in Canadian waters in the summer. These social mammals hang around Hudson’s Bay, with around 3,000 coming further down to the Churchill river basin in the summer months.

Beluga whales are white in color and are nicknamed the “canaries of the sea” thanks to their chirps, whistles or squeaks, which they use as echolocation to navigate the waters.

Given the similarity in season and location, many safari and expedition companies offer tours with the opportunity to combine polar bear and beluga whale watching.

Local tip: Beluga whales are very active on the surface and can be quite curious around boats. However, since they tend to stick to the shoreline, their white coloring against the ice can sometimes camouflage them from a distance, so bring binoculars.

The best places to visit in Canada

Spot a moose or two at Algonquin National Park, Ontario

Best time to go: May

The moose is one of the most-loved species in Canada. These somewhat goofy-looking animals are etched all over Canadian paraphernalia but are surprisingly much more difficult to find in the wild.

If you have your heart set on seeing a moose or two, head to Algonquin National Park in Ontario . If you’re lucky, you might catch sight of them while driving down Highway 60 at dusk or dawn, especially in the spring when they’re out feeding on the newly sprouted greenery.

Also, keep an eye out if you're on a camping or canoeing trip during the summer or fall in Algonquin.

Local tip: Moose are often spotted in low-lying wet areas, such as near ponds or bogs, so if you’re camping or canoeing, these are the types of places where you'll want to be on the lookout.

Canada’s best national parks

Witness the monarch butterfly migration at Point Pelee National Park, Ontario

Best time to go: mid-September

Every year thousands of monarch butterflies migrate from Canada to Mexico , where they spend the winter, returning the following year during the warmer summer months.

One of the main points of this migration route is Point Pelee National Park in Ontario. This park is the shortest crossing point across the great lakes, the perfect temporary home for the butterflies during their annual journey. Head to the tip of the Tip just before sunset or early in the morning for the best viewing.

Local tip: The monarchs tend to group together before rain or high winds prevent them from crossing the lake, so your best bet to see them in large numbers is during this type of weather.

Three puffins, two sitting in grass on rocky ledge and one flying past surveying the water.

Peep the puffin colonies at Elliston Island, Newfoundland

Best time to go: May to August

Puffins are a favorite when it comes to Canadian birds. Their pudgy little bodies and colorful facial features make for perfect photographs as they hop along the rocks and dive into the ocean in search of their next meal. Puffins are not known to be great flyers. In fact, they are downright clumsy, especially when landing. But they’re powerful swimmers.

Puffins can be found in a few spots around Atlantic Canada, but one of the best places to see them is Elliston Island in Newfoundland .

Most places only offer puffin viewing from boats, but here visitors can see them by boat or by walking up to the steep cliffs where the colonies live. May to August is the best time to see them as this is puffin breeding season.

Local tip: Bring a pair of binoculars so you can better see the puffins dive into the sea to catch fish.

The best road trips in Canada

Harp Seal in the snow (adorable)

Bark with baby seals in lles de la Madeline, Quebec

Best time to go: Mid-February to mid-March

Early March is baby seal season in this lesser-known part of Canada. The small archipelago of Iles de la Madeline , or the Magdalen Islands, is found in the Gulf of St Lawrence.

Every year, hundreds of thousands of harp seals make their way to the ice floes surrounding these islands to give birth. The seal pups, known as “whitecoats'' thanks to their fluffy white fur, can be found nursing, exploring and even barking just days after being born.

Harp seal watching has a short season as the ice floes are accessed by helicopter, so visits are strongly influenced by weather and ice conditions.

Local tip: These baby seal tours are offered by Hôtel Château Madelinot with limited space. You’ll want to book your trip about a year in advance (or more) to ensure availability.

This remote town of less than 1000 people lies at the northern tip of Manitoba , set on the Hudson Bay and surrounded by an endless tundra expanse, perfect for the world’s largest apex land predator to wander freely.

Churchill is actually the easiest place to see polar bears in the wild, thanks to its accessibility from the provincial capital of Winnipeg (with flights and trains making regular departures) and the sheer abundance of these beautiful creatures that wander the endless tundra.

The most popular way to catch a glimpse of polar bears is to jump onboard one of the Tundra Buggies that tour the landscapes. Polar bears curiously wander right up to the vehicles for a look, with the oversized trucks keeping people safely out of their reach.

The fantastic, responsible operator Frontiers North pioneered this form of safe tundra tours, and they continue to be at the forefront of accessible polar bear experiences in Churchill.

For a truly immersive experience though you cannot beat the tour packages available from Churchill Wild .

Operating a number of luxury ecolodges in various locations on the edge of Hudson Bay, Churchill Wild is best known for its up-close-and-personal polar bear safaris.

These safaris range from walking with polar bears to photo expeditions, and they even offer a unique opportunity to attempt to witness polar bear cubs emerging from their den at the end of the long winter.

In northern Manitoba, polar bears rule the land, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more powerful wildlife experience in Canada than here in the polar bear capital of the world.

Wolves are some of the most feared yet misunderstood creatures you’ll find on a Canadian wildlife holiday.

These beautiful and intimidating animals roam the remote wildernesses across the entire country, but despite their huge numbers, seeing one in the wild is quite rare for the average tourist.

If you want to not only catch a glimpse of one but also learn more about wolves, book in for a tour at Northern Lights Wolf Centre , just outside the mountain village of Golden in British Columbia.

Open year-round on the edge of Yoho National Park , the Northern Lights Wolf Centre offers fantastic interpretive tours, led by experienced wildlife guides, where you can watch the wolves going about their business from outside their large enclosures.

For an even more in-depth experience be sure to sign up for their ‘Walk with the Wolves’ photography tour, where you’ll actually go inside the enclosures for a thrilling and educational interaction.

The Northern Lights Wolf Centre is open to people of all ages, making it perfect for families and children too.

 • Where: Great Bear Rainforest, British Columbia
 • Best Time: August to October

The Great Bear Rainforest located on the rugged west coast of British Columbia is a sprawling nature reserve, home to one of the largest sections of unspoiled temperate rainforest in the world, and protecting a dazzling array of some of Canada’s most spectacular wildlife.

The rich waters of the Inside Passage are teeming with orcas, humpback whales, salmon, seals and porpoises, but it’s what can be found on land that is often most sought after.

The Great Bear Rainforest is the only place on the planet where the Kermode bear, an extremely rare subspecies of the black bear, is found.

While these mammals are already special enough, 10% of this subspecies is born with a recessive gene that gives them an all-white coat. It is these white variants that are known as ‘Spirit Bears’.

Due to the remote location of the Great Bear Rainforest, and the small number of Spirit Bears that roam here, the best way to catch a glimpse of a spirit bear is by staying in one of the luxury wilderness lodges that are located in the heart of the reserve.

The most sought-after and renowned accommodation in the rainforest is Tweedsmuir Park Lodge , one of the esteemed ‘ Magnificent 7 Luxury Wilderness Lodges of Canada ‘.

From the moment you arrive you’re treated to a level of service that is some of the highest in North America, but as wonderful as the lodge and staff are, the real stars of the show is the spirit bear.

Spend your days tracking grizzlies, black bears and the majestic Spirit Bear by boat or on foot, under the watchful eye of your experienced wildlife guides.

 • When: Late October through to December

In the autumn months, one of nature’s most remarkable and awe-inspiring wildlife events takes place in the rivers of British Columbia – the ‘salmon run’.

Salmon are born in freshwater and then head out to sea to spend their adult lives feeding and maturing, before returning to the exact river they were born to breed for the next life cycle.

They miraculously swim upstream, leaping up waterfalls to their spawning grounds, eventually laying their eggs in the gravel beds.

This hive of activity sees hundreds of thousands of salmon navigating the rivers, attracting grizzly bears and bald eagles who hunt them.

Catching the salmon run in person is possible in a number of places throughout BC, with the Goldstream River on Vancouver Island , as well as Stamp River, Elk Falls and Roderick Haig-Brown Provincial Parks being the best places to see the annual event.

Most people who go to see the salmon run are hoping to watch the grizzlies catching the fish as they leap up the falls, but in Campbell River on Vancouver Island, it’s possible to actually snorkel with the salmon as well.

To see the spectacle up close, get in touch with Ocean Fix to book your amazing snorkelling with salmon tour in British Columbia.

The peculiar and beautiful narwhal is one of the most unusual whales in the sea, with its long, single tusk giving it the nickname, the ‘Unicorn of the Sea’.

Only an estimated 80,000 narwhals still roam the oceans today, with the vast majority of them living in the icy waters around northern Canada.

Due to the remoteness of the Arctic where they are found, it can be quite an expedition to see a narwhal in the wild.

However, the Canadian company Arctic Kingdom offer a truly incredible ‘ Narwhal and Polar Bear ‘ safari at the floe edge, known as the ‘line of life’ in Pond Inlet, Baffin Island in the isolated Nunavut territory.

These 8-day all-inclusive adventures will take guests right to the floe edge to spot narwhals and polar bears, all under the watchful eye of local Inuit guides.

Staying in a tented safari camp surrounded by spectacular scenery, every day is different, with the ultimate goal of spotting narwhals proving to be one of the rarest wildlife experiences in Canada.

 • When: June-August

The nutrient-rich waters of Canada’s Arctic are also home to another curious whale that is as friendly and playful as much as it is unique.

The beluga whale is one the smallest species of whales and is instantly recognisable thanks to its all-white skin and roundish head.

Beluga whales can be found throughout the Arctic, but the highest concentration in the world is right in Hudson Bay, with the wildlife capital of Churchill seeing over 60,000 gather in its waters every summer.

While you can spot beluga whales from the shore, the best way to experience their social behaviours is to book a Beluga Whale Dream Tour with Lazy Bear Lodge.

This 2-night tour allows you to go whale watching right on the water with the belugas, using either zodiacs or kayaks to get as close to them as possible.

Kayaking with beluga whales is a fantastic experience to add to your trip while you’re in the polar bear capital of the world.

Seeing a grizzly bear in the wild is a humbling experience for any traveller, but it’s usually something you would prefer to happen when you are expecting it rather than stumbling upon one on a hiking trail.

Grizzlies are found all across the western parts of Canada, however for your best opportunity to see one safely, head to British Columbia’s grizzly bear capital at Knight Inlet.

Located a short 25-minute seaplane flight from Campbell River on Vancouver Island, Knight Inlet has one of the largest concentrations of brown bears in all of Canada, making your chance to see one almost guaranteed.

The Knight Inlet Lodge , owned by the local First Nations community, operates a floating, modern accommodation in Glendale Cove, surrounded by prime berry plantations that are a favourite food for the grizzly population.

Every day during your stay you head out on boats to search for the bears, observing them from a safe distance so as not to disturb them.

If you join one of the multi-day tours, your stay at Knight Inlet Lodge includes all your meals, flights, guides, First Nations and environmental levies, as well as the boat trips and grizzly bear viewing trips.

 • Where: Vancouver Island, British Colombia
 • Best Time: July and September

The coastal passage between the mainland and Vancouver Island in British Columbia is home to one of the largest resident orca populations on earth.

While it’s entirely possible to see orcas from the scheduled ferry or on a whale watching tour, there’s no better wildlife experience than to be on the water with them, kayaking with killer whales as they hunt for salmon and socialise.

Sea Kayak Adventures in Port McNeill offers magnificent 6-day adventure tours where you spend your days kayaking amongst the orca pods in Johnstone Strait and your nights ‘glamping’ on a number of smaller, remote islands, with full-size canvas tents protecting you from the elements and your guides cooking up healthy, locally-sourced meals.

Your expert guides will teach you all about the orcas’ behaviour, and while spending a significant time with the killer whales is the obvious highlights, the wildlife-rich waters of Johnstone Strait are also home to other species, such as humpback whales, dolphins, sea lions, eagles and black bears.

It’s not just the west coast that is brimming with incredible wildlife experiences in Canada. The eastern provinces, known as the Maritimes, are filled with their own stunning opportunities for spotting animals.

Canada’s Atlantic Coast has the most varied and numerous whale watching opportunities in North America, with countless operators heading out every day in the summer months to spot these majestic mammals.

The different species you may see while whale watching include humpbacks, minkes, finbacks and even blue whales, spotted during their annual migration between the Arctic and warmer southern waters

Head to the St Lawrence River in Quebec, the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, Halifax or the eastern stretch of Newfoundland for a huge array of remarkable whale watching tours, but Cape Breton Island north of Nova Scotia is often heralded as one of Canada’s premier whale destinations.

 • Where: Algonquin Park, Ontario
 • Best Time: June and July

If padding in a canoe along a calm river surrounded by moose sounds like your idea of a fun adventure, then you can’t miss a trip to Algonquin Park in Ontario.

Just 3 hours driving from Toronto , Algonquin Park is known as Canada’s best destination to see moose in the wild.

As most of the park is only accessible by canoe, your best bet to see one is to join Voyageur Quest on their fantastic 3-day Moose Photography Safari .

Experienced photographer and guide Rob Stimpson leads guests on a memorable journey through the heart of Algonquin Park, paddling into secluded coves and pitching tents on the banks of the rivers while moose wander all around.

Your moose safari includes all park fees, meals, camping equipment, canoeing gear and expert photography advice.

 • Where: Narcisse Snake Pits, Manitoba
 • When: late April to early May; early September

Some wildlife experiences in Canada are a little bit more niche than others, and while this particular one may not appeal to everyone, casting your eyes on the world’s largest snake den is a sight you’ll never forget.

The small town of Narcisse in Manitoba has a curious geology, with a thin layer of topsoil sitting on top of limestone that has eroded away over the millennia to form small caves – perfect hiding spots for red-sided garter snakes to hibernate over the long, cold winters.

In the spring up to 70,000 garter snakes leave their caves and flock to the Narcisse Snake Dens to mate in enormous, slithering balls, where one female may be furiously courted by over one hundred males.

Once the ritual is complete they disperse throughout the Prairies, returning again in the fall to the same dens to wait until cooler temperatures force them back underground.

The local government has built a 3km-long interpretative trail that connects the four active dens, allowing visitors to stand safely on elevated platforms and stare straight into the heart of the chaos.

It’s a fascinating sight, and if you’re exploring Winnipeg in the spring or autumn months it’s worth renting a car and driving out to see the snake dens.

 • Best Time: April to August

The cute Atlantic puffins are a small seabird found in the northern coastal regions of Europe, Iceland and Canada, with more than 400,000 of them calling the island of Newfoundland home.

While they spend most of their lives out to sea, these migratory birds return to the sea cliffs every April to breed, lay their eggs and hatch their chicks.

Their distinct plumage has made the puffin a favourite for birdwatchers the world over, and Newfoundland and Labrador even declared the Atlantic puffin to be their official provincial bird.

You can spot puffins all throughout Newfoundland during the season, but the best place to see puffins in their thousands is in the small village of Elliston.

Elliston has a dedicated puffin viewing site where you can safely get within just a few metres of the nesting puffins.

Bison populations, once numbering in the tens of millions across North America, were brought to the brink of extinction at the end of the 19th century due to overzealous hunting.

The loss of the plains bison and wood bison was almost a complete ecological disaster until federal governments and conservation groups stepped in to save the species.

In 1909, three hundred plains bison were brought to the newly-established Buffalo National Park in Alberta, and under careful protection the population flourished, growing to astonishing numbers.

Today the gigantic bison have made a remarkable comeback, and it’s now possible to see them in the wild across huge expanses of the country, from Northwest Territories to Yukon, Alberta and the Prairies.

Alberta’s Elk Island National Park is a prime spot to see a bison, as is Wood Buffalo National Park.

If you’re in Manitoba, Riding Mountain National Park also has a small, protected group of plains bison.

Plains Bison Manitoba

 • Where: Ennadai Lake, Nunavut and Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories
 • When: August and September

Far in the north on the edge of the sprawling Ennadai Lake lies one of Canada’s most remote wildlife viewing experiences.

Every autumn 350,000 caribou make their way across the Arctic tundra of Nunavut as part of their annual migration, one of the largest such wildlife events on the planet.

Due to the isolated location of Ennadai Lake it’s not a scene that many humans get to witness, but there is an option for those who are intrepid and passionate enough to see the spectacle.

Canadian operator Weber Arctic runs the Arctic Watch Wilderness Lodge , right on the shores of Ennadai Lake in Nunavut, allowing guests to fly in from Yellowknife and spend a week tracking the caribou.

Using ATVs, boats, bikes and your own two feet, you’ll be led right to the path of the migrating caribou where they graze amongst the lichen, fattening up for the long winter ahead.

It’s not just caribou you can see at this time of year. Wolves and wolverines are also common, and if you’re really lucky the Aurora Borealis may also make an appearance.

In the rugged expanses of the Northwest Territories another opportunity to wander with the reindeer exist.

At the end of Canada’s only highway running to the town of Tuktoyaktuk on the edge of the Arctic Ocean you can see a herd of caribou during their annual migration.

Here the caribou outnumber humans 2000-to-1, and seeing them move across the tundra is like witnessing the entire earth pulsating in one fluid motion.

This different type of experience includes snowmobiling alongside the traditional reindeer herders as they muster and care for their animals.

While the days are filled with adventure, the nights are just as magical with the Aurora Borealis lighting up the skies outside your ocean-side BnB.

The Northwest Territories offers an insight into a different world to what you’ll see in the rest of Canada, so for an unrivalled wildlife experience make the long and remote trek to Tuktoyaktuk.

 • Where: The Pacific Coast
 • When: Late November to March

With all the spectacular land and water animals that are found all across Canada, it’s no wonder that the Great White North is also home to one of the world’s most majestic, and arguably famous, birds of prey as well.

The bald eagle plies the salmon-rich rivers of BC and the Yukon, nesting in towering pine trees and hunting in the wind vortexes that are formed above the mountain peaks.

Around 20,000 bald eagles live in British Columbia, primarily along the coast, but they are also spotted high up in the popular mountain villages of Squamish and Whistler.

While you can see bald eagles year-round, the best time for photographers and bird watchers to see them in their element is during the winter months.

In the Brackendale area north of Squamish the Canadian Outback Rafting Company runs a dedicated eagle viewing float so you can float down the river and see the eagles in their natural habitats.

If you’re staying in Vancouver you don’t have to go far from the city to see the eagles. The lower Fraser Valley has a large population, best seen in winter.

Travelling the Yukon? You’ll have no issues finding bald eagles by driving the legendary Golden Circle Route out of Whitehorse .

Finally in our list of the best wildlife experiences in Canada we have to pay homage to the nation’s official animal, the beaver.

The large rodent is best known for the huge dams they build out of driftwood, blocking fast-flowing rivers so they can live in calm ponds away from cougars and wolves, with the largest beaver dam ever found in Wood Buffalo National Park even being visible from space.

Some of the best destinations to see a beaver in the wild are in the national parks of BC and Alberta, with the Rockies being a particularly abundant place.

They are often found swimming and building around Golden and Banff , but our favourite spot to search for beavers is close to Jasper National Park .

Just an hour north you’ll find the appropriately named Beaver Boardwalk, an easy and accessible hiking trail that skirts the edge of Maxwell Lake.

Be sure to bring your zoom lens and keep an eye on the banks for movement.

CANADIAN WILDLIFE TOURS

The wildlife of Canada has lured visitors from a young age as books and teachers have left hopes of seeing for oneself 'the wonders of nature'. Luckily, Canada has a lot of nature to uncover! There is nothing quite like witnessing the grandeur of polar bears standing on their hind legs and sniffing the air in Churchill Manitoba, or being part of the resident orca whale count off of Vancouver Island. Canada has several protected species that visitors can learn more about on a tour, witnessing the animals in their natural environment such as caribou in the Northwest Territories or on a bison safari outside of Winnipeg. Witnessing a white kermode bear catching salmon in the thick of BC's rainforest or spotting a pod of narwhals, also known as the unicorn of the sea diving in and out of the Canadian Arctic is a story that the entire neighbourhood will want to hear about on your return. Every corner of Canada has wildlife to see, so be on the lookout! When driving across Newfoundland or New Brunswick, it is likely that you will observe a moose strolling across a bog or evidence of beavers with knawed trees and damned waterways at the side of the road.

Temperature & Rainfall

Timing Canada Wildlife Tours

Adventure vacations in Canada operate primarily in the northern hemisphere’s spring, summer and fall. Plan your trip to see polar bears in Canada for peak wildlife migrations in October or November. For a Canada adventure tour in the High Arctic, the summer months are the only option, for milder weather. And for great bear rainforest tourism, or if you are seeking a coastal cruise, spring and fall offer the most availability since the ships position to/from Alaska and the Arctic regions.

Note that the climate data referenced above is for Vancouver and therefore representative of a west coast Canada trip. Temperatures for an eastern Canada adventure, around Newfoundland, are cooler but have less average rainfall.

What Travelers Say About Their Adventure Trips in Canada

This trip was amazing. We got so close to the bears it was shocking. I have always wanted to see a polar bear in the wild so this trip was a dream come true. AdventureSmith answered all my questions, and I had a lot of questions. The pre-departure information was extensive and packing lists were spot on. The trip was seamless.

We felt lucky to see the animals we did and as many polar bears as we did. The trip preparation by AdventureSmith was excellent. We have used AdventureSmith a number of times and have been very satisfied with their service, and have recommended them to our family and friends.

More than met trip expectations. Polar Rover experience was totally unique. The Adventure Specialist we worked with, Andrew, was quick with replies to questions and very helpful with getting all put together.

Most enjoyed Glacier Bay National Park with gorgeous mountain views, lots of wildlife, and glaciers. Liked the variety of activities available from strenuous hikes for the super fit to easy ambles for the less ambitious.

Exceeded expectations. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

The small ship went into quiet coves, ability to get off to kayak and hike. We most enjoyed kayaking along glaciers and fjords, and beach walks. Great guides.

This trip was amazing. We got so close to the bears it was shocking. I have always wanted to see a polar bear in the wild so this trip was a dream come true. Watching polar bears and wildlife from the rovers was definitely the highlight of the trip. We saw over 16 bears up close and afar. My flight seeing helicopter ride was cancelled due to weather. The lack of activity was tough with very few opportunities for hiking (because of the bears) and no gym at the Churchill hotel. We had a diverse group of ages, interests and abilities from all over the US and Canada. Some travelers had limited mobility but it didn't slow us down because the trip is not very active and suitable for anyone. This has to be the easiest way to safely view polar bears in the wild. Wanted to view polar bears and boy did we!

Meals Review

Like the hotels, the food in Winnipeg was excellent. The farewell dinner included a number of Canadian recipes I had never tried before. Breakfast at the Churchhill hotel was nice with hot eggs, bacon, potato and pancakes. Dinners in Churchill were at one of two restaurants with lots of local options like arctic char or bison. After dinner the restaurants transformed into local entertainment with a band or open mic night. Fun.

Crew & Guides Review

Our guide was very knowledgeable about polar bears and arctic ecosystems. I learned a lot about polar bears that I didn't know before. Evening programs by locals in Churchill were a hoot.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

AdventureSmith answered all my questions, and I had a lot of questions. The pre-departure information was extensive and packing lists were spot on. The trip was seamless.

Traveler Advice

You don't need to bring a jacket or boots as these are provided. The polar parka was very warm.

Accommodations Review

The Fort Garry Hotel is beautiful and centrally located in Winnipeg. The Chruchill Hotel was very basic, do not expect luxury. But it was clean and comfortable and warm.

We desired to see and photograph polar bears. Additionally, we got to see an Arctic Hare, moose from the helicopter. Would have liked to see Arctic fox and White Owl, but felt lucky to see the animals we did and as many polar bears as we did. Everyone was friendly and cheerful and just the right number of people with the activities and accommodations to be fun. We prefer small group trips and this fit into that category as the people were divided into small group vans/rovers with each having its own guide. It was also nice that the guides traded vehicles halfway through the day so we all got to know them both and share their information. The Trip Guide Book from Natural Habitat was EXCELLENT and covered all questions and gave excellent information.

All accommodations were very nice.

The Fort Gary Hotel Breakfast Buffet and Welcome Dinner were fabulous and way above our expectations.

Our trip leaders and guides were EXCELLENT....very knowledgeable and informative and extremely pleasant with a very good sense of humor. All the people we came in contact with at Natural Habitat were excellent.

Transportation Review

Transportation was excellent and the people who met us and got us to our destinations were EXCELLENT and very pleasant and accommodating.

The trip preparation by AdventureSmith was excellent. We have used AdventureSmith a number of times and have been very satisfied with their service, and have recommended them to our family and friends.

Have a wonderful time....it was totally enjoyable.

Good group. Fantastic leader/guide. More than met trip expectations. Polar Rover experience was totally unique. Timing was terrific as we had a total count of 40 polar bears over our two days on the Rover. The size of the group was perfect. Mostly all seasoned travelers.

Winnipeg hotel was excellent. Lodging in Churchill was as top quality as can be had in a town of that size and with the conditions that they have to endure.

Our leader, guide Katie, was absolutely top notch. She was a daily ray of sunshine. Her knowledge of the area, the history, the wildlife was astounding. We rate her with an A+. Our driver, Stew, was warm, welcoming, and helpful besides being a terrific driver under difficult conditions.

Meals were more than adequate. [There were] many choices available; freshness and preparation were quite good.

Materials sent answered all the questions. The Adventure Specialist we worked with, Andrew, was quick with replies to questions and very helpful with getting all put together.

Go soon! With global warming, this opportunity may not be available, in the same manner, in the future.

Had the best humpback whale watching of my three trips to SE Alaska. Liked the variety of activities available from strenuous hikes for the super fit to easy ambles for the less ambitious. Lots of kayaking too.

Most enjoyed Glacier Bay National Park with gorgeous mountain views, lots of wildlife, and glaciers. The weather was great as a bonus. Enjoyed the river trip at Haines with the chance to see lots of bald eagles. Olympic National Park was another highlight, just wish the weather had been better when we went to Hurricane Ridge where we really couldn't see any distance. Least enjoyed the stop in Ketchikan, maybe because I've been there twice before and it always rains hard, not just the misty rain which is to be expected in Alaska and adds an appropriate atmosphere.

I had sailed on Wilderness Discoverer before, so it was like coming home again.

The breakfast bacon on UnCruise ships is the best in the world, and I always eat more on my trips than I do all year at home. A big plate of perfectly ripe fruit available at the pre-breakfast made it easier to resist the two baked offerings that were there too. The variety and imaginative combinations of ingredients--who knew you could do so much with kale! Impressive how the single gluten intolerant guest had her requirements met at every meal.

Kelly was enthusiastic beyond words, and very knowledgeable. Our guide at Glacier Bay National Park who spent two days with us was a pleasure to have along, and I think she enjoyed us as much as we did her (sorry don't have her name) because we were a very receptive audience for all the information she had to share.

Adventure Specialist Andrew has arranged all my trips over the years, and he is as good as it gets. He even advised on which side of the ship was a better choice of cabin on this trip, and he was spot on.

Exceeded expectations. Expedition lead, Rab, led a great team. All were knowledgeable and great teachers. Plus all were accessible throughout the trip. Betty Lou and Linda were particularly outstanding but all were great. James added his diving and photography expertise as did Drew and Brian. Eryn was an outstanding naturalist and patient teacher. Captain and crew were friendly and helpful. Fabulous in all regards. Rab really set the tone and having the experience of Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn, and the others enhanced the experience. The handling of bear confrontation on shore showed exceptional knowledge, training and leadership. Very impressive.

The Sea Bird is old and cabins are what they are, but still really good. Get fitted sheets. Easier on stewards and passengers. But vessel was great. We knew what to expect so no surprises. The common areas were more than adequate for the expedition.

Amazing work given the limitations of the galley. Breakfast and lunch were perfect to fuel us up and keep us energized. Appetizers were a highlight. I very much liked the portion size at dinner. Soup needs work. Too much of same dark base. Think miso or chowder, but minor. Great baked goods. Service was A+++ from Val on down.

No one better than Rab, Betty Lou and Linda. Gold standard. Rab shared personal experiences and emotions and displayed encyclopedic knowledge of every subject. Clone him. Betty Lou's talk on her career was fabulous. The whole team was knowledgeable, personable, helpful, available, great in crisis and enthusiastic. How can one be with Rab and not get excited about the events or with Linda, Betty Lou, Eryn and not learn?

Photography staff was first rate. Brian and Drew knew everything and explained it clearly. Divers, Jim and Lynn, added a whole different dimension to our experience. Local guides were essential to understanding Haida and Kwakwaka wakaw cultures. And the Watchmen gave such authenticity to our experience. Loved Ranger Molly. Wow!!!! No weak individual on this team.

Itinerary Review

Haida Gwaii, Gwai Hannas, Old Massett, and Alert Bay were strong cultural experiences which made the whole trip worthwhile. The nature walks were well chosen and instructive. Sometimes after dinner talks were repetitious, but small issue.

Zodiak tours were uniformly outstanding and exciting. The excursion into the sea near the Hobbit Hole was a memory for all time as was Rabs talk about Vitas Bering and George Stellars. Whew, all good!!! Glacier visits were well done, awesome, and sobering to see the impacts of climate change. Potlach dances were highlight also as was the ability to meet Jim Hart and Christian White. Legendary and inspiring. Gwaii Hannas was magical.

Andrew was, as always, excellent. Made our trip prep easy. We would recommend AdventureSmith to friends and family without hesitation.

Embrace the experience. Pack lighter/take less. Read some history like Muir's Travels in Alaska, history of decimation of tribes by European exposure and books on Northwest art.

 • A Remarkable Journey to Alaska, British Columbia & Haida Gwaii
 • National Geographic Sea Bird

We most enjoyed kayaking along glaciers and fjords, and beach walks. Great guides. Wonderful group to travel with, made some good friends. We wanted to see Alaska’s coast, would hate to travel by large ship. The small ship went into quiet coves, ability to get off to kayak and hike. Ketchikan...after peace and solitude, was too congested.

Given tight quarters well done. Slow shower drain, leaving toilet area wet, not my favorite.

Variety, flavors, presentation wonderful.

The enthusiasm and knowledge of all guides added greatly to the trip.

Baggage and transfer handled smoothly. Over emphasis on the boots. Needed once and ankle high was plenty.

Tell me about Canada …

With a land mass of almost nine million square kilometres, Canada is the second largest country in the world. It is bounded to the west by the Pacific Ocean and Alaska, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the north-east by Greenland and to the south by the USA. To the north lies the polar ice-cap.

The landscape is extremely diverse, ranging from the Arctic tundra of the north to the great wheatlands in the centre. The spectacular Rocky Mountains are found in the west and in the south-east are the Great Lakes, the St Lawrence River and the mighty Niagara Falls.

The country is divided into 10 provinces and three territories, all of which have their own distinct character and traditions. Canada offers wonderful wilderness experiences, vibrant cities and outstanding wildlife.

Whats special about its wildlife?

Canada is a superb wildlife destination. It is a vast country and consequently has a large diversity of habitats and ecosystems. There are hundreds of thousands of lakes, streams and rivers enclosed by great oceans which are home to an amazing variety of mammals, including the unique Narwhal, the Beluga and many other whales, seals, dolphins and beavers.

On land, bird migratory paths cross both coastlines as well as the interior. Caribou, Wolves, Moose, and Grizzly, Black and Polar Bears all inhabit the countrys vast expanse of mountains, forests and wilderness areas.

Wildlife Trails

Travel with confidence

Canada wildlife holidays designed around you and with a focus on the best places to see bears in Canada. This is a destination we have the ‘inside track’ on, as our North American Operations Manager, James Manson, lives in British Colombia for many years. Our Canada bear tours visit stunning wilderness locations for brown and black bear viewing; many of them very much off the beaten track. We were the first wildlife company to offer our signature ‘3 bears tour’; where you have the chance to see brown, black and polar bears all in the same 2 week travel window. Our bespoke Polar Bear tours are famous for more time at the destination for a cheaper price than the mainstream Churchill polar bear packages.

Our specialist knowledge has enabled us to organise Canada wildlife safaris in the High Arctic; in locations as remote as Baffin Island and Igloolik in Nunavut. So, whether it’s a self-drive bear and whale watching tour on beautiful Vancouver Island, or a Spirit Bear safari in the Great Bear Rainforest; we can make it happen and you will also be helping conserve the wildlife your photograph through our partnership with the Raincoast Conservation Foundation.

Bear Viewing Vancouver Island. Best Places to Go!

Having lived on Vancouver Island for several years, we look at the best locations for bear viewing on Vancouver Island, the best way to get there from Vancouver, the best time of year to travel for bear viewing and why you should include this very special wildlife destination as part of your Canada Wildlife Holiday. Talk to Allan on Whatsapp about the amazing variety of wildlife safaris available in Canada to suit all budgets. We don't just sell wildlife holidays - it's our passion!

Why Grizzly Bear Lodge is the Best Place for Bear Viewing in Knight Inlet

Knight Inlet is the most famous and popular grizzly bear viewing location in Canada, and one of the best places in Canada to see grizzly bears. They congregate in this special location to fish for salmon, and where you can observe interaction between these normally solitary animals as they compete for the best fishing spots. Instead of sending our clients to the much more commercial Knight inlet Lodge at Glendale Cove - which accommodates around 40 people - we prefer to use Grizzly Bear Lodge, located on the beautiful Minstrel Island.

Drifting with the Brown Bears and Bald Eagles of Bella Coola

We have been privileged to visit many of Canada’s wildlife sanctuaries and national parks on our Canada wildlife holidays and see all 3 species of North American bears. However one location for viewing Brown Bears stood out above all the rest; for the spectacular setting, fully immersive way of seeing the bears on beautiful river drifts and providing visitors with the chance to ‘walk with the bears’ in the company of an expert local guide.

Our Clients Say About Us

We had a two week holiday on Vancouver Island.. we went on a whale watching tour and saw Orcas, Humpbacks, Dahl porpoises, white striped Dolphins, seals and Sea lions. We then did a Grizzly bear r and saw lots of Grizzlies as well as loads of Black Bears. The highlight of the holiday was a three day kayaking trip which was fantastic. Kayaking with Orcas and Humpback whales was incredible Our holiday was completely organised by Wildlife Trails, and I can’t recommend them highly enough.. everything was planned to perfection and they made the entire holiday exactly what we asked for.

Our slightly unusual request was to cover certain National Parks in the US and then visit British Columbia with the focus on Whales and Bears all within a restricted time slot and to ensure both ents an teenage girls could be entertained on the way. Our experiences will give us life long memories we will treasure, we enjoyed every aspect o the trip and saw amazing wildlife, the experiences surpassed our expectations. Wildlife Trails were fantastic in ensuring our arrangements and itinerary fitted perfectly with our requirements and the logistic went completely smoothly. Allan was flexible with us changing our mind on a few major thing before we finalised the tour and helpful in ensuring we had everything we needed both before and during our trip. THe service was first class.

Allan Blanchard from Wildlife Trails organised a holiday for myself and a friend to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada to see Polars Bears. All the flights connections were spot on, arrived at Winnipeg per itinerary, had a night in the hotel there, all good, got to the railway station in good time to get the 2day trip to Churchill. The train was very comfortable, food fairly good, enjoyed the experience very much. Got a taxi to the blue sky B&B, where we had 7 nights, had been there before 3yrs ago, everything was excellent, food and accomodation very high standard, and Jennifor and Gerald really looked after us very well. Had 2 great day trips on the Tundra Buggy, where we saw 45 bears, mum and cubs, bears play fighting, some up really close to the buggy. Had a good tour with North star, managed to see polar bears up very close to the bus, and we also had 2 and half days with Nature 1st, who took us all around the churchill area to try and spot bears which we were very successful with about 8 bears in total. People/drivers all excellent, very knowledgeable, and we had a great time with all the people involved in our holiday. Everything went very well, Wildlife trails did a fanastic holiday for us, and we were lucky to see a total of 62 bears, including a bear lift from the polar bear jail of a mum and 2yrs old cub. it was great. thank you to all concerned for giving me and my friend such a fanastic time Have been with Allan and Kirsty Blanchard for many years, as they do all my wildlife holidays of which there as been many. Every time it is always great, arrangements as they should be, people who should be meeting me are always there so although I travel alone quite a bit, I feel very safe with Allan and Wildlife Trails organising the trip as things are all in place and I have no need to worry about anything First Class Tour Operator.

Fantastic bear and whale watching experience in the Great Best Rainforest and on Vancouver Island. Different locations, tour operators and accommodation types, all of them great in their own ht, the most impressive being the "Great Bear Chalet" in the BellaCoola valley. We saw plenty of grizzly and black bears, orcas and humpback whales Very pleasant experience, Allan did everything possible to make this combination of different tour components fit our limited timeframe - and our bucket of extra wishes! Very much looking forward to planning the next trip with "Wildlife Trails"

I specifically wanted to see Polar bears with plenty of photo opportunities. I had a 4 night stay in the Frontiers North Tundra Buggy Lodge, with 5 eight hour Tundra Buggy trips. I also stayed in nipeg for a couple of nights before and after. The Tundra Buggy people were first class, with driver and guide being very knowledgeable, food was good, both in the Lodge and on board the Buggy. I was a little apprehensive about the long bunk room with 20 people but the inner and outer curtains provided good privacy and also sound deadening. Highly recommended. You have much more time in the area where the bears congregate that if you have a day trip for Churchill (which takes 2 hours each way to get to the area). In Winnipeg I stayed at Inn at the Forks - a good hotel in a lovely area. Also highly recommended. Everything was arrange with detailed consultation and consideration of what I wanted. I had used Wildlife Trails twice before and have always found them excellent.

These majestic white whales have long enchanted animal lovers with their smiling mouths, bulbous heads and pearlescent skin. While Churchill in northern Manitoba might be better recognised internationally for its polar bear connection, its waters also belong to a large population of belugas. In summer, some 3,000 beluga whales swim down to the Churchill river basin from Hudson Bay, and there are guided tours you can take to help make an encounter with them all the more possible.

While grizzly bears are more typically associated with Alaska or British Columbia, the opportunity to see them at Bear Cave Mountain in the northern Yukon Territory is about as exclusive as it gets. Grizzlies arrive in their droves each autumn to Ni’iinlii’njik (Fishing Branch) Territorial Park to take advantage of the geothermally-heated river, which is warmed as thermal springs seep into the limestone of its bed. Wild animals you can see in America's national parks

Is there an animal more synonymous with Canada than the moose? They live in almost every region of the country, except for Vancouver Island and the Arctic beyond, but the place where it’s easiest to find them in the wild is Ontario’s Algonquin Provincial Park. This protected area, dappled with maple trees, vast lakes and dramatic canyons, has a moose population of between 2,500 and 4,500, best observed during the spring when they feed on fresh foliage.

This protected area, dappled with maple trees, vast lakes and dramatic canyons, has a moose population of between 2,500 and 4,500, best observed during the spring when they feed on fresh foliage.

If the moose crossing signs weren’t evidence enough, the park says that these emblematic animals are particularly drawn to Highway 60, which skirts Algonquin’s exterior, at certain times of the year. If you’re planning a (careful) drive-by viewing, aim for dawn or dusk and the couple of hours that follow. When exploring the interior of the park on the water, it’s also possible to see moose in the low-lying wetlands. Visit under your own steam or on a guided canoe tour.

Peer at puffins, Elliston, Newfoundland and Labrador

There’s a reason the Atlantic puffin is Newfoundland and Labrador’s provincial bird. Around 95% of all of North America’s puffin population breed on its rugged shores, and there’s nowhere you’re more likely to see them for yourself than Elliston. Located on the Bonavista Peninsula, and one of 10 geosites that make up the Discovery UNESCO Global Geopark, Elliston is home to hundreds of these colourful and comical characters. At Elliston Puffin Site, you’ll find one of the most easily accessible spots on the continent for viewing Canada’s favourite auk.

Nesting pairs of puffins flock to Elliston usually between the months of May and September to roost on the coastal crags. Visiting Elliston Puffin Site is free (although donations are encouraged) and can be done either at your leisure or under the guidance of an interpretive guide. With the closest view you can find of puffins on land, this is a truly captivating encounter. Note that visitors are limited to 50 people at a time, so you may have to wait your turn if it’s busy.

Learn the cultural significance of bison, various, Saskatchewan

The prairie bison was almost lost entirely in Canada, having been hunted to near-extinction by the 1870s. But there are a number of places across Saskatchewan where herds can be found today, including both of the province's national parks – Grasslands, where they were reintroduced in 2005, and Prince Alberta, where they have always been. The West Block of Grasslands, as well as being the only natural habitat in Canada for the black-tailed prairie dog, is home to the park’s free-roaming bison population.

These animals were gone – then conservations brought them back

There are no guided wildlife tours at Grasslands National Park, but visitors can take the Ecotour Scenic Drive or the Timbergulch Trail on foot to find the herd (keep a distance of at least 328 feet/100m). Elsewhere in the province, Wanuskewin Heritage Park has its own clan of bison, who welcomed their first calf in 2020 – the first time a baby bison had been born on this land since 1876. Wanuskewin has been a gathering place for all nations of the Northern Plains for over 6,400 years, and its present bison herd are all descendants of the last 1,000 bison to roam the prairies.

Inuit guides will be with you, looking out for the long, singular, twisted tusks that identify these unique cetaceans. While they prefer diving deep in the ocean, narwhals need to surface every 25 minutes or so to breathe. It’s an expedition in itself just to get to Nunavut, and the narwhal-spotting season (between May and June) is slim enough that the odds are unkind, but this remote white wilderness is sure to be a breathtaking experience regardless.

See muskoxen and more, Thaidene Nene, Northwest Territories

Thaidene Nene became Canada’s newest national park reserve in 2019, its name meaning ‘land of the ancestors’ in the Denesuline Yati language. The park’s management is shared between Parks Canada and a coalition of First Nations peoples, with the area protecting the East Arm of the Great Slave Lake. Its 10,425 square miles (14,070 sqkm) of boreal forest tracts, waterways, primordial rocky landscape and Indigenous heartland is also a realm of spectacular wildlife, from grizzly bears to muskoxen – one of the oldest mammals to walk the world.

One of the greatest natural phenomena in the world, British Columbia’s autumn salmon run has been enthralling wildlife enthusiasts since time immemorial. It is when freshwater-born sockeye salmon return to their birthplace from the sea, journeying hundreds of miles to lay their own eggs. Not only is it amazing to see the salmon themselves, swimming valiantly upstream and quite literally running a gauntlet of threats, but also the other wildlife this spectacle attracts.

Catch the salmon run, various, British Columbia

Visible in British Colombia's Rivers Campbell, Adams, Goldstream and more, as well as numerous provincial parks in BC, this annual event entices hungry grizzlies and bald eagles with the promise of their best-loved meal. It can become a true feeding frenzy, with bears careening into waterfalls and tearing through streams while birds of prey swoop in from above, often fighting over the biggest fish. For that reason, it’s imperative to keep your distance when witnessing the salmon run.
