Discover The Gems Of North Georgia With Winery Visits

Nearly all of Georgia's wineries are tucked away in the state's gorgeous northern mountain area just one to two hours outside of Atlanta. More than 50 locally owned vineyards and tasting rooms can be found nestled up against the edge of the North Georgia mountains. Our trusted guides know every mile on the way intimately!

During your unique experience with us, you're sure to hear knowledgeable guides and winery owners sharing how Georgia's climate allows for a thriving and varied wine industry! The local climate is ideal for cultivating a variety of wine types. The rich, sun-warmed soil here is actually comparable to the soil that pads Italy's most famous wine regions.

Georgia's thriving wine industry is home to more than 1,000 acres of hilly, painting-like vineyards that can be admired during North Georgia wine tours. Enjoy views of vine-etched rolling hills from a winery porch as you taste a dry white, rosy red, or semi-sweet wine!

My partner and I spent the day with A Grape View Tours and it was a truly magical experience. Our guide was just an all-around great person to spend time with and really knew the area inside and out. The van was clean and comfortable, the scenery was out of this world, and every destination was a treasure. One of our stops was Roo winery (named after a ROOster :D), which I understand had recently opened and was beautiful inside and out. We also stopped at a dairy farm for ice cream and a roadside farmers market. One of my favorite stops was a gentle hike to a waterfall - stunning!! This was not our first wine tour but I have to say it was one of the nicest. It just felt so personal, like we were visiting an old friend who was treating us to all the local flavors and colors. Highly recommended!

Katlin K., GA

We had an absolute blast celebrating my sister this weekend! Huge thank you to @a_grape_view_tours 🎉 thank you for helping make her bachelorette such an amazing and special time! I cannot recommend them enough! Patrick and Cliff are the absolute best! Please, if you are interested in booking a wine tour they are hands down the best around. They have so many options for different wineries and could not have been more accommodating
If you are seeking a fabulous wine tour, look no further - I wish we could give A Grape View ten stars! Cliff & Patrick were so wonderful. Our group of five really enjoyed seeing the best of Ellijay on this tour.

A Word From

When people travel they grow. They become happier, build self confidence, make new memories and experience new things. I have this incredible passion bringing people together with a new destination and experience and I truly love creating memories.

I have traveled as long as I can remember. I’ve visited 60 countries and have taken hundreds of travelers to Europe over the years. I graduated Georgia State in 1998 and knew I would continue to stay in the travel industry. In 1996 I opened up a full service travel agency near Helen, GA and to this very day I truly enjoy matching up the traveler with the right trip.

In 2013 I met with local businesses and officials to come up with ways to bring the wine industry and the tourism industry together. I decided to take a leap of faith and created a wine tour experience. The ingredients were perfect for me, I was in my hometown, it brought together travelers and locals, it was fun, and it included wine! I created an all-inclusive wine tour, bringing out all the best options from previous travel experiences. Travelers enjoyed beautiful scenery, had fun tour guides, enjoyed unique wineries and made wonderful memories.

The tours grew from one bus to multiple buses in just a few short years. I received an award of Entrepreneur of the Year 2014 by the White County Chamber of Commerce. I continue to work hard with my team to strive for a level of excellency and commitment to our travelers and local community.

After a short time, I also realized that there were so many types of travelers and the standard full day wine tour was simply not one size fits all. We added unique and private tours to the lineup. I also learned that the wine tours really do bring people together, and in one year we doubled our private tour business. Families, friends, co-workers and special event tours. We now have found a way to fill every need on private tours, whether its a tour with a wine expert, chocolate tasting or even zip-lining (we recommend doing this FIRST before drinking wine).

I still am a full time travel consultant, and have clients from all over the world. I also look for new ways to grow the wine tours. I love traveling and am always looking for the next greatest adventure. My favorite trip? An Arctic Expedition around Svalbard, Norway. My favorite wine? Let’s just say, I’ve only met a few I haven’t liked!

Contest at Pop the Cork Wine Tours

lovers of good wine

We are a husband and wife team, lovers of good wine, enjoy entertaining, and ran Wine Tasting Tours in California for 11 years. After moving to Georgia one item on our ‘East Coast To-Do List’ was to seek out local wineries. And lo and behold . . . we found several wineries in a beautiful countryside setting with stunning views, a good varietal of wines and of course, ‘Southern Charm’ in North Georgia. And all of this is only a little over an hour from the Metropolitan Atlanta area!

Our first experience was the annual ‘Georgia Wine Highway’ that provided a ‘peek’ into the many wineries in the area. So, for the next year we did our homework touring the wineries, meeting the wonderful owners (and enjoying wine tasting along the way), and decided to share this wonderful experience with others. From there ‘Pop the Cork Wine Tours’ was born! We are here to bring a ‘new vibe’ with our wine tasting tours!

What a wonderful and comprehensive guide to North Georgia’s wine tours! As a wine enthusiast who loves exploring new regions and tastes, I’ve found your post incredibly helpful and informative. The details you’ve provided, from the wineries’ history to their specialities, add a personal touch that makes the prospect of these tours all the more enticing.

Hello, Tony! The wineries of North GA get more popular by the day, and visiting a few on a GA wine tour is a great way to see them safely with your friends. Enjoy!

' src=

This is a very informative article, like an all-you-need-to-know guide about tour choices. I have heard that Georgia is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world. My wife and I love to travel, but she especially loves the countryside views. I know Georgia is definitely full of natural views where the grapes are grown. What is your suggestion for a getaway that is full of great viewpoints? We love to take pictures with nature and enjoy the countryside life.

Hello! Believe it or not, most of these areas of North Georgia (USA) are relatively newer producers of wine. Many of the wineries are less than ten years old, and almost all are less than 20 years old. There are plenty of wines with an “old world” taste, though, so it’s easy to understand how the area’s wine history might seem longer than it is!

There are lots of fantastic wineries in North GA, which makes it hard to choose a favorite getaway, but easy to find a bunch of great options! For viewpoints of long-range mountain views, consider visiting any of these destinations on a North Georgia Wine Tour: Terra Incognita, Kaya, Wolf Mountain, Living Water Winery, Ott Farms Winery, Creekstone Winery, Crane Creek Winery, and Fainting Goat.

Alright, alright, alright! I stumbled upon this article about wine tours in North Georgia, and I gotta say, I’m impressed. I never knew that Georgia was producing wines, let alone that they have a whole tour dedicated to it.

First things first, let’s talk about the article itself. Kudos to the author for providing such a detailed guide to wine tours in North Georgia. From the various vineyards and wineries to the different types of tours available, this guide has got it all. It’s clear that the author has done their research and is passionate about wine tours in North Georgia.

As someone who’s never been on a wine tour before, this article really opened my eyes to what I’m missing out on. I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend a day (or two) drinking delicious wine while taking in the stunning scenery of the North Georgia mountains? Sign me up!

But all joking aside, I really do appreciate the author taking the time to write this article. They’ve provided a valuable resource for anyone looking to plan a wine tour in North Georgia. And for those of you who have been on a wine tour before, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the experience. Was it worth it? What was your favorite part?

Overall, I’m really impressed with this article and the information provided. It’s clear that the author has a love for wine and for North Georgia, and they’ve done a great job of sharing that love with their readers. So, thank you to the author for this informative and enjoyable read. I’m definitely adding a wine tour in North Georgia to my bucket list!

Vineyards have already fascinated me since I was asked to work on a project on wine when I was child. Research on vineyards led me to know such beautiful vineyards in Georgia. And your article comes to me at the right time to know about the vineyard tour further.

A private tour of Ellijay Wineries including wind tasting is so much fun I could imagine.

I am definitely going to make it this time!

Thanks for sharing such a comprehensive information.

Ultimate Guide to Georgian Wine Country: Discover the Best of Kakheti and Tbilisi

View of Georgian Wine Country in Europe with vineyards and mountains in the background

Travel to the Cradle of Wine – The Republic of Georgia

While wine has carved its niche in the annals of global history and is an integral component of numerous cultures worldwide, its roots are deeply embedded in one specific locale: the Republic of Georgia. This nation doesn’t just share a bond with wine; it is revered as its birthplace. Archaeological discoveries have consistently identified the South Caucasus region of Georgia as the site of the earliest known wine production, a practice dating back to 6,000 BC.

This means Georgia’s winemaking heritage spans over 8,000 years, distinguished by its traditional Qvevri winemaking method, a technique so unique that it has earned the accolade of a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage . Yet, beyond the accolades and history, it’s the tangible elements—the hospitable people, the rich culinary landscape, and the distinctively Georgian wines—that truly make a journey to the Republic of Georgia an enriching and memorable experience.

Georgian Wine Production

Georgia’s winemaking heritage is deeply rooted in its four primary wine-producing regions: Kakheti, Imereti, Kartli, and Racha. The country includes 29 Protected Designations of Origin (PDOs) and a rich diversity of indigenous grape varieties, numbering over 525, with 45 of these varieties actively cultivated in commercial viticulture. Among these, approximately 75% are white grape varieties, and 25% are black (red) grape varieties.

Old Georgian wine cellars where Qvevri are stored showcase the unique and historic method of winemaking deeply rooted in Georgian culture. Images courtesy Allison Levine and Andrey Khrobostov.

While modern methods like stainless steel and oak aging are employed, Georgia is renowned for its traditional use of Qvevri, large clay vessels, for wine fermentation and aging. A unique aspect of Georgian wine production involves the method of fermenting white grapes in Qvevri along with their seeds, skins, and occasionally stems. This process imparts an amber hue to the wine, often referred to as ‘amber wine’ or ‘orange wine’ due to its distinct color and rich, tannic profile. These amber wines, celebrated for their depth of flavor and historical significance, are a source of immense pride in Georgian viticulture.

Amber or orange wines are essentially white wines made using a method more akin to red wine production, where the grape skins are left in contact with the juice for an extended period, resulting in a wine with a deep amber or orange hue, a fuller body, and a unique flavor profile that distinguishes it from traditional white wines. You can learn more about orange wine production here .

The #WinesofGeorgia

Here are some of the main Georgian wines and the grape varieties involved in their production:

Saperavi: This is arguably the most famous red wine from Georgia. Made from the Saperavi grape, which is a teinturier variety (both skin and flesh are red), it produces deeply colored, full-bodied wines with bold flavors and high tannin content.

Rkatsiteli: One of the oldest grape varieties, Rkatsiteli produces a highly acidic and versatile white wine. This wine can range from crisp and light to rich and full-bodied, depending on the production method, including the traditional Qvevri method.

Mtsvane Kakhuri: Often simply known as Mtsvane, this grape produces elegant and aromatic white wines. These wines typically have floral and fruity notes, with a balanced acidity that makes them quite refreshing.

Tsinandali: This is a dry white wine blend, primarily made from Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane grapes. Tsinandali is known for its straw color, fruity aroma, and a well-balanced, sophisticated flavor profile.

Kindzmarauli: A semi-sweet red wine primarily made from the Saperavi grape. Kindzmarauli stands out for its natural sweetness balanced with acidity, deep purple color, and fruity notes.

Khvanchkara: Another popular semi-sweet red wine, Khvanchkara is a blend of the Alexandrouli and Mujuretuli grape varieties. It is known for its ruby color, floral aroma, and raspberry notes.

Georgian Food

Georgian cuisine, a vibrant blend of flavors and techniques, has evolved over the centuries under the influence of various cultures, including Mediterranean, Greek, Persian, and Turkish culinary traditions. Each region within Georgia has its own unique culinary style and preparation methods, reflecting the diverse landscape and cultural influences of the country.

Agriculturally rich, Georgia has traditionally placed a strong emphasis on vegetarian dishes, with meat historically being a luxury reserved for special occasions. In contemporary Georgian cuisine, however, there is a more balanced incorporation of meats alongside staple ingredients like breads, cheeses, walnuts, and fresh tomatoes. Notably, walnuts, a key ingredient found in many Georgian recipes, highlight the country’s status as a significant walnut producer. The cuisine’s diversity and the use of fresh, locally sourced ingredients like walnuts, are central to its appeal and uniqueness.

Traditional Georgian Cuisine

Some popular Georgian dishes include:

Khachapuri – This beloved Georgian staple is essentially a cheese-filled bread, but it’s much more than that. Each region has its own variation, ranging from a simple cheese-topped bread to elaborate versions with added ingredients like egg and butter.

Puri – This is a type of Georgian bread, traditionally baked in a toné, a deep, circular clay oven. The bread has a unique texture and flavor, partly due to the distinctive baking method, which imparts a smoky, earthy aroma.

Pkhali – Often served as an appetizer, Pkhali is a kind of vegetable pâté, combining finely chopped and cooked vegetables (like spinach or beets) with a rich walnut paste, seasoned with garlic, herbs, and spices. It’s a colorful and flavorful showcase of Georgia’s love for walnuts.

Badrijani Nigvzit – This dish features tender strips of roasted eggplant (badrijan) wrapped around a savory, spiced walnut paste. It’s a delightful combination of textures and flavors, balancing the softness of the eggplant with the richness of the nuts.

Ajapsandali – A hearty and spicy Georgian eggplant stew, Ajapsandali is a medley of vegetables including eggplants, tomatoes, bell peppers, and onions, often seasoned with fragrant herbs. It’s a vibrant and nourishing dish, perfect for those who love robust flavors.

Khinkali – These are Georgian dumplings, notable for their twisted, knob-like shape. Typically filled with meat, cheese, or mushrooms, and a hot broth, Khinkali are a culinary delight, served boiled or steamed. They are a true test of one’s eating skills; the trick is to consume them without spilling the savory broth inside.

Churchkhela – Often referred to as Georgian candy, Churchkhela is a traditional sweet made by stringing walnuts together and dipping them in thickened grape must mixed with flour. This results in a candle-shaped treat that’s chewy, nutty, and satisfyingly sweet, often found hanging in markets and roadside stalls.

How To Get To Georgia

The Republic of Georgia is located at the juncture of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. Part of the Caucasus region, it is bordered by the Black Sea to the west, Russia to the north and northeast, Turkey to the southwest, Armenia to the south, and Azerbaijan to the southeast. A stop on the Silk Road, Georgia has been a convergence of civilizations over the centuries until becoming part of the Soviet Union. It gained its independence in 1991 but spent the next decade dealing with political and social unrest. Fortunately, since 2008, Georgia has rapidly expanded for tourism and today is one of the safest countries in Europe.

To get to Georgia, the best airport to fly into is in Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia. If you want to travel around Georgia into the wine regions, it is very safe to travel on your own by renting a car (you can browse current flight and rental car rates here on Kayak ). However, for travelers in Georgia, private transportation often proves to be the most convenient option. This is partly because the Georgian language, which has its own unique alphabet, is predominantly spoken throughout the country. While many locals are fluent in Russian, a legacy of Georgia’s historical ties with Russia, English is less commonly spoken, especially outside of Tbilisi and key tourist areas. However, visitors will find that the warmth and hospitality of the Georgian people often bridge the language barrier effectively. Assistance from a guide can further enhance the travel experience, ensuring smooth communication and a deeper understanding of the local culture and places.

You can book one of our favorite private wine tour guides and a full day guided trip right here.

Tbilisi aerial view

Tbilisi, as Georgia’s capital and its largest city, holds significant historical and cultural importance. The city is divided by the Kura River, known in Georgia as the Mtkvari River, which originates in Turkey and flows to the Caspian Sea. Central to Tbilisi’s charm is the historic Old Tbilisi area, dating back to the Middle Ages, which forms the core of the city. Additionally, parts of the city reflect 18th-century Georgian architecture.

Since gaining independence, Tbilisi has seen the development of modern architectural structures. This includes key government buildings like the President’s House and the Public House, as well as cultural venues like the Concert Hall, all located along the river’s edge. The Bridge of Peace, a contemporary pedestrian bridge made of steel and glass, spans the Mtkvari River and links the historic Old Town with newer parts of the city.

What to Do in Tbilisi

Exploring tbilisi.

Most of Tbilisi’s notable attractions are concentrated in Old Tbilisi, making it an ideal area for a walking tour, whether self-guided or with a guide . The tour can start at Freedom Square, a central and historically significant location in the city. This square, once known as Lenin Square during the Soviet era, now features a striking golden statue of St. George slaying a dragon, symbolizing the nation’s transformation.

As you stroll through the cobblestone streets of Old Tbilisi, you’ll notice a diverse mixture of architectural styles, with many houses charmingly covered in vines. The neighborhood highlights Tbilisi’s historical role as a significant hub on the Silk Road, evident in the close proximity of religious and cultural sites representing various faiths and communities. These include Armenian, Georgian Orthodox, Jewish, and Catholic places of worship, reflecting the city’s rich multicultural heritage influenced by the myriad of traders and travelers who passed through over centuries.

Two exceptional ways to see the city are from the water and from up high. By boat, sail down the Kura River and under the Bridge of Peace for a unique perspective of Tbilisi. Pass by cliffs, the 13th-century Metekhi church, the Royal Baths, and Rike Park. There are many boat companies by the river offering 30-minute boat tours day and night.

For an aerial view, take the Aerial Tramway located beside Rike Park. The tram can be taken during day or night. It travels from one side of the river to the other, with the Bridge of Peace always in view. From the top, in addition to breathtaking views, you can visit the Narikala Fortress as well as the Botanical Garden. Locally guided tours including the cable car can be arranged ahead of time.

Starting from the summit reached by the tram, descend the hill to reach the Leghvtakhevi Gorge, home to a notable waterfall. This natural feature is integral to Tbilisi’s history, being the source of the city’s famed sulfur waters. Tbilisi’s very name originates from the local word for “warm place,” a nod to these therapeutic waters. In the Abanotubani neighborhood of Old Tbilisi, you’ll find a concentration of sulfur bathhouses. Drawing inspiration from Persian and Turkish bath traditions, these bathhouses offer a serene escape, inviting #Winetravelers to unwind in the warm, healing embrace of the sulfuric waters.

Wine in Tbilisi

Tbilisi wine museum

A glimpse of what you can expect at the Tbilisi Wine Museum. Images courtesy Allison Levine .

To learn about the 8000-year history of Georgian winemaking, visit the Tbilisi Wine Museum (8 Sioni St, Tbilisi, Georgia) housed in a 17 th -century building that sits over a preserved underground city. The museum is below the MtKvari River and includes artifacts that have been discovered during archaeological excavations.

When ready to enjoy Georgian wine, head to Vino Underground near Freedom Square (15 Galaktion Tabidze St, Tbilisi, Georgia). Opened in 2011, it was the first wine bar and retail store for natural wine in Georgia. Owned by six of Georgia’s most well-known natural wine producers, including American-born John Wurdeman, Vino Underground is in a small, brick-lined cellar. Featuring small-production, family-owned wines, there are more than 200 options to try. Enjoy a glass at the bar or take a few bottles home.

Next door to Vino Underground is the Bitadze Tea Shop & Museum , a tiny museum founded by father and son Shota and George Bitadze.

Tea was introduced to Georgia in the early 19th century. The first instance of tea cultivation in Georgia dates back to 1809 when Prince Mamia V Gurieli began growing Camellia Sinensis, the tea plant, in his botanical garden. However, it was in 1847 that Prince Miha Eristavi established the first tea plantation in Georgia after smuggling tea seeds from China. This event is often marked as the birth year of Georgian tea and the beginning of tea culture in the region.

The first tea bushes in Georgia were planted in 1845 in western Georgia, but significant development in the tea industry began towards the end of the 19th century under the Russian Empire, which showed interest in cultivating the tea industry in Georgia. This period saw the engagement of experts to develop tea plantations in the country. The first tea factory in Georgia was open from 1893 to 1925 and was run by a Chinese tea master. During Soviet rule, tea was manufactured but production was abandoned after the Soviet collapse.

In 2006, the Georgian Organic Tea Producers Association was created. It began with educating producers about new technology and now they send farmers to study in tea-producing countries such as China. Stop by the Bitadze Tea Museum before or after a stop at Underground Vino to purchase some Georgian black, green, and herbal teas. In addition to selling Georgian tea, they offer a tea-tasting experience and can also arrange visits to tea plantations in Georgia.

Satasuri, which means asparagus in Georgian, is owned by Ekaterine and Iva Davitaia. The restaurant is located next to Fabrika Tbilisi, a cool, industrial-style factory-turned-hostel offering a bar and an eclectic lounge. Satasuri was originally the home of Ekaterine’s parents. She and Iva come from the hospitality industry and opened Satasuri in 2020, opting to feature Georgian flavors with modern innovation. In addition, they have a selection of wines from small producers. Interestingly, all wines are sold for the exact same price, giving Iva a chance to introduce people to interesting wines.

One hour away from Tbilisi is the Kakheti wine region, the most famous wine region in Georgia. It consists of eight districts: Gurjaani, Qvarelli, Sagarejo, Dedoplistsqaro, Signangi, Lagodekhi, Akhmeta, and Telavi, its capital. Wine is likewise very important in Kakheti and symbols of the beverage can be found everywhere. Grapes are carved into old stone structures and Qvevri are found in the fountains throughout the squares and villages of the region.

Saperavi vineyard in Georgia

Of the 48,000 hectares of vineyards in Georgia, 33,000 hectares are located in Kakheti. 80% of the vineyards in Georgia are in Kakheti and 20 of the 29 PDOs are also found in this region. The principal white grapes in Kakheti are Rkatsiteli , Mtsvana Kakhuri, Kisi, and Khikhvi. The primary red grape is Saperavi. Kakheti has a continental climate with rich diverse soils called “cinnamomic” as they consist of sandy, reddish, calcareous clays. The grapes are all hand-picked and there is no irrigation.

Sighnaghi, perched atop a hill, offers an eye-opening panoramic view of the Alazani Valley with the majestic Caucasus mountains in the backdrop. The town’s name, derived from the Turkish “signak” meaning shelter, reflects its historical role as a bastion against invasions, established in the 18th century. Encircling the town is an impressive four-kilometer fortress wall, complete with towers and gates, cascading down the hills, reminiscent of a miniature Great Wall of China. This wall is not just a historical relic; visitors can actually walk along it.

Often celebrated as Georgia’s city of love, Sighnaghi charms with its well-preserved cobblestone streets and architecture dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. Dotting these streets are notable establishments like Pheasant’s Tears and Orko’s Wines.

Pheasant’s Tears , set in a building that’s over 300 years old, enjoys a reputation as one of Georgia’s finest dining establishments. It was opened by John Wurdeman, an American artist who discovered Georgia during his art studies in Moscow. Wurdeman has played a pivotal role in both preserving and revitalizing Georgia’s ancient winemaking traditions. His organic, unfiltered wines, fermented and aged in Qvevri, have garnered international attention. The restaurant, helmed by chef Gia Rokashvili, offers a unique dining experience with no fixed menu; instead, Rokashvili crafts daily culinary creations using fresh, local market produce.

Adjacent to this culinary gem is Okro’s Wine Restaurant & Cellar, established by native Sighnaghi resident John Okruashvili. Naming his venture after the Georgian word for gold, “Orko,” Okruashvili released his first wine in 2009. Specializing in traditional, organic Qvevri wines, he utilizes grapes from his own vineyard. The winery’s restaurant features a terrace that provides splendid views of the Alazani Valley, making it a perfect spot to savor these unique wines.

Where to Stay in Sighnaghi

Lost Ridge Inn is a boutique inn, a restaurant, a craft brewery, and a horse ranch all in one. It is located on a crest overlooking the Alazani Valley and the Caucasus Mountains. This rural getaway is the first of its kind in Georgia and is also owned by John Wurdeman. The boutique hotel has six rooms, each with a modern rustic vibe. The Lost Ridge Café serves a seasonal menu with ingredients from their permaculture garden. The craft brewery produces beer onsite and ages it in the onsite beer cave. And they offer horseback riding in the mountains.

The Gurjaani Municipality, less than an hour north of Sighnaghi, is in the heart of the Kakheti region and is home to more than 80 wineries. Nine of the PDOS in Georgia come from the Gurjaani region. This is where the annual Gurjaani Wine Festival, a celebration of the heritage and diversity of Georgian wine, takes place each October.

Gurjaani Wine Festival

More than 30,000 people attend this event which takes place in the forested Akhtala Park and features hundreds of wineries of all sizes, handicraft vendors, live music, cultural exhibitions, and local Georgian foods, including Kakheti barbecue. This festival is a great reason to travel to Georgia in October.

Where to Stay in Gurjaani

Located in the Gurjaani region’s village of Vazisubani, the Vazisubani Estate is a blend of historical elegance and contemporary luxury. Established in 1891, this graceful estate and vineyard was initially the property of a Georgian nobleman, before transitioning to state ownership. Today, it has been transformed into a 19-room hotel, offering a unique blend of historical charm and modern amenities.

The estate extends over a 35-hectare vineyard. Complementing the vineyards is a 1.5-hectare park, an oasis of diverse trees and exotic plant species, adding to the estate’s serene and picturesque setting.

A highlight of the Vazisubani Estate is its modern restaurant. Here, Winetravelers can indulge in culinary delights while enjoying the estate’s own wines. The restaurant is designed with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, which not only bathe the space in natural light but also open up to reveal a swimming pool and breathtaking panoramic views, offering a dining experience that beautifully marries the estate’s historic legacy with contemporary luxury.

Mountain views, miles of vineyards, cozy tasting rooms, and a wine for every palate; this is what waits for you in the North Georgia mountains. The Wine Highway includes 27 wineries in a 70 mile radius, so you’re bound to find a wine for every palate. Large vineyards with international awards, small family owned wineries; and even those providing lodging and weekend events. Take this self-guided wine tour in Georgia and discover all that this area has to offer. I guarantee that this mountain region is a wine-lovers paradise.

Disclaimer: We were hosted on the Unicoi Wine Trail, however, as always all opinions are my own.

Planning your Georgia wine tour

The Winegrowers Association of Georgia provides a map of all the wineries for your convenience. Our most recent Georgia wine tour began in the foothills of the North Georgia mountains, at Chateau Elan . If traveling from the south, this is a really elegant way to start your wine tour.

Lodging near Helen

Most of our North Georgia wine tours and tastings have revolved around the city of Helen. This is a central location to a majority of the wineries. This area offers a multitude of options for overnight stays. The Valhalla Resort offers luxury adult only accommodations including a spa, restaurants, and golf. There are also pet friendly family options, such as Bear Creek Lodge and Cabins which is located within walking distance of the city. The Fairfield Inn and Suites provides a budget friendly hotel option in Helen.

Other lodging options for your wine tour in Georgia

In addition to the lodging options inside the city of Helen, and the Sylvan Valley Lodge just 3 miles south, there are many other options to choose from. The Unicoi State Park and Lodge offers a variety of rooms, cabins, and campsites to choose from. Unicoi has a restaurant onsite, along with zip-lining and other family friendly activities.

The area is also saturated with bed and breakfast options such as Bernie’s B&B, and Lucille’s Mountaintop Inn & Spa. If you prefer a cabin rental outside of the city, Freedom Finder cabin would be a great Airbnb option as well.

Unicoi Wine Trail

The Unicoi Wine Trail consists of six wineries that are all located in White County, within a 10 mile radius of each other. In conjunction with our multiple visits to Helen we have personally enjoyed four of these wineries. Each of them offer free parking on site, a tasting room, and a variety of wines.

The six wineries on the Unicoi Wine Trail include CeNita Vineyards and Winery, Habersham Winery, Serenity Cellars, Sylvan Valley Lodge and Winery, The Cottage Vineyard & Winery, and Yonah Mountain Vineyards. The furtherest being only 12 miles from the center of Helen.

  • Habersham Winery

Habersham Winery is one of Georgia’s oldest and largest wineries. It is located half a mile south of Helen, across the road from the Chattahoochee River and Nora Mills Granary. The tasting room is open seven days a week and offers indoor and outdoor seating; as well as free WIFI. Wine tastings are $10 per person and include 5 wine samples and a souvenir wine glass also. For those who love chocolate and those too young to enjoy the wine, they have cups made of chocolate. These make a delicious pairing to the wine too.

Payton enjoying a chocolate cup at Haversham Winery

Sylvan Valley Lodge

Sylvan Valley Lodge is located only three miles south of Helen. In addition to the tasting room, the lodge provides overnight accommodations, serene gardens, and mountain views. The tasting room offers craft wine, beer, and mead (which was a first for us). Quarterly they host a Wine Weekend Getaway complete with lodging, dinner and wine pairings. We were able to experience the French event during July of this year and it was spectacular.

Sylvan Valley Lodge Wine Tasting

  • Serenity Cellars

Serenity Cellars is located less than three miles from the Sylvan Valley Lodge. They offer 11 different wines to choose from; with Bianco Bello being my favorite. Tastings are $10 and include 5 samples. There is indoor and outdoor seating available, with leashed pets allowed outdoors. Live music is provided almost daily.

Serenity Cellars

CeNita Winery

CeNita is located less than 10 minutes from Serenity Cellars. The tasting room is open 7 days a week with live music on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Outside of the tasting room you will find towering oak trees, hammocks, swings and also a fire pit overlooking the vineyards. There is lodging on site, therefore this makes the venue perfect for weddings.

CeNita Winery and Vineyards

Cottage Vineyard and Winery

The Cottage Vineyard and Winery is located closer to Cleveland but is only 11 miles from Helen. This North Georgia winery provides the best mountain views; and was voted as one of the top 25 wineries in the USA. The wines are delicious and the 360 degree mountain views make them that much better.

There are two different tasting options available. A flight of 5 for $11 or a flight of 8 for $15. The indoor tasting room can accommodate large groups and tours. The outdoor patio offers comfy seating, swings, and breathtaking views that of course make you want to linger for one more glass.

The North Georgia Honor Wall

In 2015 the owners of The Cottage Vineyard and Winery decided to pay homage to the military men and women. They created a slab on the highest point of the property encircled with the 5 service flags of the US Armed Forces. Then added a Georgia white marble Normandy style cross, dedicated to all military for contemplation, honor, and reflection. They then built the upright portion of the Honor Wall. The wall contains 120 red Georgia bricks and 9 granite tiles that have been sandblasted with the names, branch of service, war info of loved ones.

You may also purchase honor bricks and granite tiles for military and first responder loved ones that you have lost. The wall is a beautiful tribute to those who have sacrificed for others. The owner, Jim Penner, served 24 years in the United States Air Force.

When I think of Georgia I don’t immediately think of wine so this was a refreshing discovery to see all the great wine and charming places on the wine tour. Beautiful photos brought me right along.

Thanks! I am glad you enjoyed.

Oh my goodness! Wine week/month sounds SO fun. I’m planning on visiting Helen, but not until October 🙁 I will have to keep these stops in mind though! Cottage Vineyard and Winery looks beautiful. Thanks for this great guide!

October is a beautiful time to visit. Make sure to allow plenty of time at the Cottage Winery. You will not want to leave the views!

I love doing self-guided wine tours when in a wine region! I didn’t know Georgia was one of those! It looks so pretty I would love to visit!

What a stunning region. I would love to explore the wineries and stay for a weekend. Serenity Cellars looks like a lovely setting.

This sounds so amazing. Now I have yet another reason to go back to Georgia! We have a lot of wineries here in Texas and I love visiting them!

I had no idea there were so many wineries in Georgia! I want to visit them all 🙂

That is the goal I am working toward!

Wow this looks like a great way to explore Georgia. Do you think it’d be ok for someone who doesn’t drink? Is there enough to do outside of drinking?

Definitely! We have enjoyed hiking, tubing, zip lines, exploring waterfalls, antique shopping, restaurants, scenic drives, and more in the area. We enjoy going as a couple and as a family. This area definitely has a lot to offer.

I didn’t know Georgia had wineries. Sounds like a fun trip to make this month.

Wine Week sounds like a great deal.

Awesome post! Now, in our area, there are about the same # of breweries in the same radius! But wineries have so much more class and gorgeous scenery – your pics are great!

Thank you : )

Those views are 😍!

I love self-guided tours and I love the Georgia Mountains. Thanks for a great article!

I am so glad that you enjoyed it!

That sounds so fun! The wineries in New Mexico have been closed, until this week, and I’ve missed them.

Great tips as usual. Thanks for posting helpful and well-researched articles!

Yeah, sign me up for this! 😀

I did not realize Georgia has a wine trail. I love wine and love to travel for wine. I would love to go to highway wine week.

Wow, what a beautiful tour. Thanks for taking through the wineries and sharing lodging options.

Looks like Georgia has some lovely scenery and places I had never heard of before. Thank you!

A great review of the wine country in Georgia. I live near Napa and just adore wine tasting and I want a chocolate cup for mine!

Wow, looks like the wine lovers haven! Gorgeous.

If only I wasn’t allergic to wine and champagne…sigh…looks like a lovely place.

12 Best Vineyards And Wineries In Georgia You Must Visit

August 24, 2022 //  by  Southern Trippers

Are you ready to indulge at some of the best wineries in Georgia? The Peach State is known for its use of the muscadine grape to produce wine. With a well-suited climate, the state has an easy time growing muscadines which, while traditionally used for making wines, sauces, and jams, are heavily used for wine in Georgia these days. When you visit The Peach State, you can find a great wine tasting in Georgia that is perfect for you as a traveler. Or, if you are really looking to get the most out of your time spent in wine country, you can take a tour of many of the best Georgia wine tastings.

One of the biggest tour companies is Pop The Cork Wine Tours. Tours leave from Atlanta, Cumming, and Gainesville areas and offer travelers from chauffeured transport, covered wine tasting fees, gourmet lunches, and more. So, which of these amazing wineries will you visit first?

How Many Wineries are there in Georgia?

There are fifty-seven licensed wineries in Georgia. This is nearly double the amount that there was ten years ago. Of course, Georgia can’t compete with the number of wineries in other states like California, which has more than 4,500 wineries! But, nonetheless, Georgia’s wineries are stunning and offer guests remarkable wine tastings. Georgia wine tours are available in abundance today, where you can explore some of the fifty-seven wineries for yourself while exploring The Peach State.

Where Is Georgia Wine Country?

You will find Georgia’s wine country about two hours north of Atlanta. The official wine country spreads through the northern area containing Helen, Sautee Nacoochee, Cleveland, Hiawassee, and Dahlonega. The soil here is amazing for vineyards. In fact, it is often compared to the soil found in Italian wine regions. America’s wine-growing grounds are unique due to the large diversity of grape species that can be grown there. So, where does Georgia wine country play into all of this? Georgia was one of the first states to take part in prohibition. Because of this, the modern wine industry really didn’t take root until the 1980s. Today, Georgia is the national leader in producing wine made from the Muscadine grape.

Best Wineries In Georgia

Crane creek vineyards.

Among the best vineyards in Georgia is the Crane Creek Vineyards in Young Harris. This vineyard likes to express the uniqueness of the area in which they are located through the unique grapes that they make wines from. They have more than twenty acres of vines planted for a variety of grapes, including Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Albarino, and other European varieties. There are also many French-American hybrids and modern hybrids used to grow their fantastic wines. Crane Creek has the goal of growing the finest wines in the region in the most sustainable way possible. While the vineyards are less than two hours away from Atlanta, you will fill like you are a world away in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Sitting high up in the mountains in the shadow of Brasstown Bald, the state’s highest peak, Crane Creek has an incredible tasting room called the Stone House Tasting Room. Walking distance from the Stone House Tasting Room is The Farmhouse Market. This boutique shop offers a selection of gifts and gourmet foods and has a small bar serving glasses of wine and tasting flights. Outside there are lower decks where you can sit and enjoy your wine. They also allow guests to create their own custom gift baskets to purchase, which is just one part of what makes it one of the best wineries in Georgia.

They also have a farm and an Alpharetta location. On the farm, you can take part in horseback riding lessons, join a summer camp, visit the farm animals, host your birthday party there, and more. For parents, you may be interested in knowing that the farm holds Tea Parties in the Forest, where you can enjoy tea, bite-sized sandwiches, and desserts in an enchanted forest complete with string lights and party hats. The Painted Horse Winery Tasting Room and Wine Bar in Alpharetta is the place to be for live music and enjoying an afternoon or evening. Many wine tours also include transportation, so visitors can sit back and enjoy the scenic views as they travel from one winery to the next.

From family-owned vineyards to award-winning wineries, there is something for everyone to enjoy. So grab a glass and get ready to savor the taste of North Georgia's finest wines.

History of North Georgia Wine Production

North Georgia has a long history of wine production, dating back to the early 1800s. The first vineyard in the state was established in 1809 by a man named John Adlum, who planted European grape varieties in the area around Washington, Georgia. By the mid-1800s, Georgia was the largest wine-producing state in the country, with over 500 wineries in operation.

However, the wine industry in Georgia was decimated by the arrival of phylloxera, a pest that attacks grapevines, in the late 1800s. The pest destroyed most of the vineyards in the state, and it wasn't until the 1980s that the wine industry began to make a comeback.

Today, North Georgia is home to over 50 wineries, producing a wide variety of wines from both European and American grape varieties. The region's unique climate and soil conditions make it well-suited for grape growing, and many of the wineries in the area have won awards for their wines.

One of the most popular grape varieties grown in North Georgia is the muscadine, a native grape that is high in antioxidants and has a unique flavor profile. Muscadine wines are often sweet and fruity, and are a popular choice among visitors to the region.

In addition to muscadines, North Georgia wineries produce a wide variety of other wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Noir. Many of these wines have won awards at national and international competitions, and the region's reputation as a producer of high-quality wines continues to grow.

Would you believe me if I told you that Georgia is one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world with a history dating back more than 8,000 years? Well, best you do because archeological findings, including old wine-making vessels and other evidence, verify this bold yet true statement.

While Georgia wine has somewhat flown under the radar, it has caught the attention of the international wine market in recent years.

With a total production of around 1.8 million hectoliters, wine tourism in Georgia is ever-growing, with its culture, gastronomy, and of course, its wine history all being highly attractive to travelers.

Where do I fit in?

Well, I’m here to help sort through the best winery tours in Georgia for your convenience. These tours are conducted by knowledgeable locals who know the regions and their wines backwards – the perfect way to discover both in a fun, wine-fueled day.

So, let’s dive in!

What is a Vineyard Tour?

Wine regions of georgia, the best georgia winery tours, final thoughts on georgia wine tours.

Right, before we get into the crux of the article, it’s important to clarify a couple of things. The most important is defining what exactly a vineyard tour is. Now, you might be thinking to yourself that it’s merely a walk through the vineyards, but that couldn’t be further from the truth!

a woman wallking through a lane of a georgia vineyard while holding a glass of wine

While most vineyard tours do include a vineyards walk, that’s only the tip of the iceberg – they encompass so much more! A winery tour might be a better way to describe the day as that’s essentially what you’ll be doing.

This might include meeting the winemaker and tasting room staff, touring the cellar and barrel rooms, tasting wines out of the tanks, and learning all about the history of the estate. You will, of course, also get to taste the wines in either a formal or informal setting – the highlight of the day.

The tours all usually include transport too, so you won’t need to worry about drinking and driving – a big no-no. It also allows you to relax and enjoy the day without having to nominate a member of your group to be the designated driver. Besides, who wants to watch their friends or family having fun without being able to participate?

The second important thing that needs to be addressed before jumping into the best winery tours in Georgia are the country’s wine regions. Now, a trip to Georgia is pretty blessed when it comes to wine regions and they are all rather unique. Each has its own specialties and focuses on particular varietals or production techniques.

However, one thing is for certain – no matter where you are in the country, there’s always going to be an amazing vineyard close by. Phew!

Let’s now take a look at the most significant wine regions in Georgia.

wine sitting on a barrel in georgia Kakheti

Kakheti, found in the easternmost stretches of Georgia, is arguably the most important wine region in the country. Almost three-quarters of all grapes grown in Georgia come from the Kakheti region and it’s also responsible for some of the country’s highest quality grapes. You can even argue that it’s home to the best wine in the entire Caucasus region !

There are a large number of microclimates littered throughout Kakheti, with the most significant being found along the Alazani River. Conditions range from mild and tropical to arid, with an overall ample amount of rainfall too.

The predominant soil type found in Kakheti is called “cinnamonic”, a somewhat hybrid soil type comprised of sandy, reddish, calcareous clays with high iron content. It is in these soils that red varietals such as Saperavi and Cabernet Sauvignon, and white varietals such as Kakhuri Mtsvani and Rkatsiteli, thrive.

georgia Imereti

The Imereti region is found in western Georgia along the upper areas of the Rioni River. It is by far the most diverse wine-growing region with a range of mesoclimates and altitudes. It is bordered by the Meskheti Mountains, the Caucasus Ridge, the Likha Ridge, and the Tskhenistskali River, with altitudes ranging from 50 – 500 meters above sea level.

Generally speaking, the winters are cold and wet and the summers are hot and dry allowing full phenolic ripeness to occur. Stony loams with a high calcium carbonate content are commonly found and are rich in limestone, a viticulturist’s dream. The limestone facilitates the production of white grape varietals and lends a certain minerality to the wines.

White grapes rule supreme in Imereti, with Tsitska and Tsolikouri being the most popular. They are generally blended together, much like Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon in Bordeaux. While red wine production is far inferior, it still exists with Otskhanuri-Sapere and Rko dominating the plantings.

fall foliage seen in Kartli where you'll find some of the best wineries

The Kartli region is found in central Georgia to the east of the Kakheti region. While Kakheti completely overshadows the Kartli region in sheer magnitude, Kartli is going through a revival with many of the old vines being resurrected. Though traditional wine-making methods are still employed, there is also a drive towards what you’d typically ysee while traveling around Europe , like sparkling wines.

The region can be divided into three sub-zones – Kvemo (Lower) Kartli, Shida (Inner) Kartli, and Mtskheta-Mtianeti. They typically all display similar soil types, with loose sandstone being the most common. Calcareous clays and loams can also be found in more isolated quantities throughout Kartli.

The most famous wine from Kartli is called Atenuri – a naturally sparkling wine similar to Methode Ancestrale, made from the Goruli Mtsvane and Chinuri grapes. Other popular native varietals include Saperavi, Takveri, Shavkapito, and Chinuri.

Racha-Lechkhumi

a bir'ds eye view of the lush green georgia Racha-Lechkhumi vineyard

In contrast to the Kakheti region, Racha-Lechkhumi is one of the smallest wine regions in Georgia, nestled between the slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountains and the Imereti region. With cold winters and hot, dry summers, Racha-Lechkhumi experiences relatively high humidity levels. Vineyards are generally planted with thin canopies and at low densities to prevent the detrimental effects of fungal rot.

As a result of the sunny climatic conditions present in the region, the resulting wines are generally a bit sweeter than others. The predominant white wine varietals that are planted in Racha-Lechkhumi all, funnily enough, begin with a ‘T’ – Tsolikouri aka Bazaleturi, Tetra, and Tsitska. On the red grape front, the most commonly planted varietals include Saperavi, Usakhelauri, Orbeluri Odzhaleshi, Alexandrouli, and Mujuretuli aka Keduretuli.

One of the most famous wines from Racha-Lechkhumi comes from a sub-region called Khvanchakara. The area produces semi-sweet wines from a combination of the Mujuretuli and Alexandrouli grapes.

Black Sea Coast

ga small wooden house sitting within a lush green georgia adjara vineyard

Last but not least is the Black Sea Coast region, located to the extreme west of the country and best known for its “joyful” wines. Many sub-regions make up the area, including Abkhazia, Guria, Samegrelo, and Adjara.

The vineyards found in the Black Sea Coast area are generally planted at much lower altitudes (2 – 4 meters above sea level) and are much more sub-tropical. There is also a lot more humidity experienced around the coastal regions, resulting in crisp and refreshing wines that are light in body.

The Adjara region is at the forefront of trying to restore and revitalize the old, native grape varietals that are found in the area. They strive to save these native varietals so that one day they will be the driving force behind the wines in the region. These include Klarjuli, Mekrenchkhi, Burdzghala, Brola, Khopaturi, Kviristava, and Shvashura, to name a few.

Now, as one of the oldest wine-producing countries in the world, you would expect the number of Georgian wineries to be mind-blasting. However, this isn’t necessarily the case, and while there are more than 100,000 family wineries, the number of commercial Georgian wineries sits at just over 1,000.

This is still overwhelming, nonetheless, but luckily there’s light at the end of the tunnel – not all wineries offer tours and tastings! There are still a shed load to choose from though. Luckily, I’m here to guide and advise you after putting in the hard yards and scouring through all the tours on offer.

So, let’s take a look at some of the top Georgia winery tours out there. And the best part is, as the cost of living in Georgia is pretty low, these wine tours are hella’ affordable:

Kakheti Wine Tour

Kakheti Wine Tour georgia gyg

Kicking things off for the best Georgia winery tours is a tour to the most famous region in the country, Kakheti. Now, there’s a whole lot more to Georgia than just wine. In fact, to not explore the cultural side of the country would be an injustice.

Luckily, this Kakheti wine tour ticks both boxes!

The tour starts at the Avlabari metro station in Tbilisi after which you will head to the village of Badiauri for a sampling of fresh Georgian bread and cheese at a local bakery. It’s then off to the Bodbe Monastery of St. Nino and “The City of Love,” Sighnaghi. You can then enjoy some free time and grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant.

Next up is the largest winery in Georgia, Khareba. You will explore their underground wine tunnels and galleries, learn about Georgian wine production and then taste their wines. Once finished, you will be taken to the second winery for the day, Corporation Kindzmarauli , for a vineyards tour and a tasting of four wines.

Imereti Wine Tour

Imereti Wine Tour georgia gyg

Next up is a vineyard visit to the picturesque Imeretian countryside, departing from Kutaisi. The first stop is at the Bagrati Cathedral for a quick culture and history lesson. It’s then on to the good part – a winery visit at the Nikoladze Wine House . The tasting is comprised of two to three white wines, a red wine, and even a couple of local vodka-like spirits called Chacha.

Unlike many of the winery tours on the market, this tour is special as the winery has been in the family for hundreds of years. Instead of modern production methods and equipment, they have opted to keep it traditional. So, you will get to see the unique production methods – there’s nothing quite like making wine underground in clay Qvevri’s!

Kartli Wine Tour

Kartli Wine Tour viator

The next recommendation for winery tours in Georgia is this full-day trip to the Kartli region, starting with a pickup near your stay in Tbilisi . The tour departs from the Marriot Courtyard Hotel and takes guests from the city center straight into the heart of Kartli wine country.

The day begins with a bang at the first winery where you will taste some of their top wines as you learn all about the mighty Qvevri. There is a traditional Georgian lunch included in the tour, perfectly placed between the two winery visits.

After lunch, it’s off to the second winery of the day to learn more about the history, cellar practices, and of course, to taste more wine. Just when you thought it was time to call it a day, there’s one more surprise in store – a visit to the Jvari Monastery. I mean, what’s a day out in a Georgian wine region without a bit of culture and history thrown into the mix?

Racha-Lechkhumi Wine Tour

Racha-Lechkhumi Wine Tour gyg

This is no ordinary winery tour. It’s not 5 hours, not 11 hours, it’s a full 2-day trip! Departing from Tbilisi, you will explore the Racha region in western Georgia, starting at Shovi. You’ll get to see caves, castles, and other historical buildings, including Nikortsminda’s famous cathedral.

After descending into the caves, it’s time to come back above ground to discover the picturesque Shaori Lake and its surroundings. Then, to top it off, the real reason why we’re all here – a traditional local wine tasting as well as some Georgian cuisine. All food, drink, and accommodations are provided too, so you just need to show up!

Black Sea Coast Wine Tour

Black Sea Coast Wine Tour georgia gyg

Rounding off the list is a visit to the Black Sea Coast region for a winery tour in the republic of Adjara. The region has a rich, traditional wine-making history with a whole bunch of unique local varieties. It’s only an hour long so it’s the perfect morning or afternoon activity, especially if you’re pressed for time.

You will taste a selection of both red and white wines that I promise you’ll love! You’ll also learn about the traditional Qvevri but trust me – this tour does more than just scratch the surface. You will be educated by a local host who will tell you all about the regional terroir, explain the different local grape varietals, and give you an insight into Georgia’s wine culture.

Worry Less With Good Insurance

Don’t forget to grab some reliable travel insurance before heading off to a Georgia vineyard!

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

That, unfortunately, brings us to the end of the best Georgia winery tours. I hope you’re now inspired to discover the Georgian wineries and their ancient wine-making practices.

With wine tourism on an upward trajectory, Georgia varietals are going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future. So, strike while the iron is hot and get exploring before it becomes over-commercialized and busy. After all, a Qvevri a day keeps the doctor away!

What a great find on our way through town. We were greeted by the tasting room manager, Jonny, and the owner. It was a pleasure speaking with both of them. Very relaxing atmosphere. We love reds so we ordered the Reserve which came with cheese and chocolate samples. They had a full menu with meals but we were just stopping by on our way to dinner. They also have a Bed and Breakfast on site...Bent Tree. Highly recommend this gem of a place!

Enjoyed our time here today. This place is located a bit off of the beaten path but their wine and chill atmosphere is worth tracking down. They will be celebrating their one year anniversary next week. We were kindly greeted immediately upon walking in the door. Staff was very welcoming and informative. The building is very tastefully constructed, and is warm and inviting. We had a bottle of their Pinot Noir roséand it was light, refreshing yet had a wonderful mineral essence to it. They also serve light bites as well as beer. Had live music when we visited.

The Wine

Very cute, quaint winery with a lodge on the property that you can stay at. The staff were wonderful and the owners were so nice. I sampled two whites, two reds and a rosé that were recommended by the staff and I enjoyed every one of them. They have a sweet dog Zoe that wanders around and an outdoor cat Olive, adding to the charm. We went for their NYE party and it was a good time with live music. They have music on the weekends and various events throughout the year like dinners on the lawn and culinary creations. Fun spot to relax and hang out.

We came for the Georgia wine highway. Johnny was great, explaining what we will be tasting. It's a great personal touch. The tasting was part of the highway that included ~40 wineries. The wife got dry and I got sweet. Great wines and one of the best wineries I've seen here in North Georgia. Reservations needed and save some time to chill at this great location.

Very organized tasting with a bite of cheese and pretzel depending if you got sweet or dry.

First time visit! Great atmosphere, friendly staff including the family dog! I enjoyed the SASSY MEETS SERIOUS tasting sampler... I purchased 2 of the 4 wines offered. Georgia Wine Tours

Qvevri – ancient wine, modern twist.

Our Georgia wine tours focus on many of the great wineries near the Kakheti wine region towns of Telavi, Kvareli, and Signagi and we highly recommend staying one, two or three nights away from Tbilisi giving you quality time to relax and taste.

  • Visit wineries that employ traditional Qvevri and modern methods.
  • Experience unique Qvevri wine and learn all about it
  • Tour with owners and winemakers
  • Taste many wines that will be new to you
  • Stay at lovely vineyard and winery hotels
  • Georgian cuisine is superb – Plenty of chances to enjoy it
  • Visits to historic, beautiful churches and monuments

Remember: Everything we do is private and customizable – just let us know if there is something you wish to add or remove from our Kakheti wine tours.

Great Georgian BBQ at the Chubini wine cellar

So Many Wineries – Qvevri & Steel, Old & New.

There are so many options they are impossible to talk about at length here, but below we cover an outline example program for one or two nights away from Tbilisi just to show you what is possible:

Our Kakheti wine tours start by heading out of Tbilisi for around two hours or so until we reach the heart of Kakheti. Our first visit will be Shumi winery which is a well oiled, visitor-friendly setup and the perfect introduction to quality Qvevri wine. A tour of the factory will be made, followed by a tasting.

After our time at Shumi we will head further into the countryside for 30 minutes or so to visit the boutique Qvevri winery, Chubini . We will be having lunch here with the owners Tornike and Lika. This newly married couple is a delight to spend time with and they will proudly show you what they do, and we will try their wines during lunch relaxing in the garden.

A local baker lets Malka take the bread out of the oven

You probably will not want to leave Chubini, but we have to as there is more to see and taste. We will drive 15 minutes more to the historic Chateau Eniseli winery which will also be our home for the night. This place is fascinating and exudes historical importance and Soviet influence. The story behind this winery is too long to recount here, suffice to say you will find it very interesting during a tour of this very unusual facility.

You will enjoy a tasting of Eniseli wines, brandy, and chacha and be free to relax for the evening in this very tranquil place.

Telavi & Signagi on our Georgia wine tours

For our two night Georgia wine tours we would have you stay in the Telavi area first night, then in Signagi for the second. Several wineries around Signagi will be added into the schedule according to your tastes, white, red, semi-sweet, Qvevri, oaked…the area has them all.

Gary enjoying the qvevri wine at Vellino winery in Georgia

Before we get to Signagi for the night there is much to do, see and taste.

After breakfast, we will visit the spectacular Gremi Fortress and enjoy a quick look at the museum inside the structure. The video below should give you the idea, lovely place indeed.

After visiting Gremi we will head 15 minutes to the Shilda winery. This is a total contrast to what you have at Eniseli, this winery was built in 2015.

We will have a look at the production area where modern stainless steel is being used to produce great quality wine from Kakheti grapes. The company does also use Qvevri for some of its wines and we will taste both styles.

While we are here at Shilda we will learn about, and try, making traditional Georgian Shoti bread in the ubiquitous circular ovens, plus Georgian Khinkali dumplings and also Churchkhela sweets. This is a great hands-on experience and a lot of fun.

Leaving Shilda, we have a number of variations on Georgia wine tours en-route to Signagi if you are enjoying a two-night package. A one night package will mean we visit one more winery in Telavi before heading back to Tbilisi, this will one of many but a great option is Schuchmann Winery .

Schuchmann is also a great option for an overnight stay, this will all depend on the route you choose and your budget. In any case, we will visit the winery, enjoy a tasting and the superb views that the place affords.

If you have a three-day trip then we will head through some classic terroir such as Tsinandale and Mukuzani on our way to the winery which will also be our lunch spot today, Numisi Cellar and museum.

This is a very quirky place, and while the wine may be the standard of Shumi or Shilda, the experience is an interesting one. If the owner is around then we can meet him and hear, through the guide, a little about the place. We will enjoy a tour of the Qvevri cellar and the many museum pieces that are on show, then have a tasting during a lunch of traditional Georgian BBQ.

The beautiful hill-top town of Signagi in Georgia, center of wine country

After this visit, you will be ready to head to your hotel, so we drive up the hill to the lovely town of Signagi, check you in and leave you free till after breakfast in the morning.

Keep going – Keep tasting!

The Pheasant´s Tears winery has a lovely tasting room in this quaint hill-top town, and we will have a tour and tasting here after giving you time to wander a little in the town after breakfast.

Click here for a great article on Georgian wine

We will then leave Signagi and drive 45 minutes or so to reach the small village of Badiauri. Here we will visit one of the traditional bakeries producing bread the way you have seen so far.

After the bakeries, we will head to the tiny rural village of Kakabeti to visit the fantastic Vellino boutique winery. The Qvevri wines here are superb quality and delicious. We will enjoy being educated on the local terroir by the young owner and then have a premium tasting.

Georgia wine tours and wine tasting experiences

After Vellino there may be one more winery visit in the Khashmi area before heading back to Tbilisi, but this will depend on how we are going for time.

Being a private tour it gives us the chance to adapt to local opportunities and for your guide to suggest a place en route. We will go with the flow (of wine)!

North Georgia vineyard set to open tasting pavilion this spring

Sam Zamarripa and his wife, Robin, named their Dahlonega vineyard Doghobble Wine Farm in honor of leucothoe fontanesiana, an evergreen shrub that grows abundantly on stream banks around the property. Appalachian folklore holds that when bears are being pursued by hunting dogs, they run toward the plants, knowing the tangled brush will “hobble” the chasers.

“It’s considered to be the most natural way to prevent erosion along creek sides and it is also just quite beautiful,” Sam Zamarripa said.

Zamarripa, a serial entrepreneur and former state senator, describes the winery’s approach as a “new Southern vineyard, borrowing heavily on Southern culture and traditions, but very much new in the sense that architecture is modern rustic, and the approach to sustainability is all about the fit and making sure this all goes into the future — modern thinking.”

The Doghobble brand was inspired by a bush on the property, as well as the American art of barn quilts. Each wine is represented by a symbol that derives from these two elements. Courtesy of Sam Zamarripa

Work on Doghobble has been in progress for a few years. “I was enamored with the idea that I could build a vineyard that would be here 20 years from now,” Zamarripa said. He hired consultants, landscape designers and architects, planted 5 acres of grapes and built an outdoor pavilion, tasting room and event space.

The original plan included demolition of a 1970s-era homestead, but architects Scogin and Elam came up with a master plan to incorporate the building into the tasting room.

The Zamarripas also own another 20-year-old vineyard purchased from Robin’s cousins. “We purchased it because we knew we were going to build the facility here in North Georgia, and rather than build a production facility here, we focused all the amenities for tasting,” Zamarripa said.

That’s how they are able to have wine available now, even though their farm’s vines won’t be ready for a couple of years. They also buy grapes from other winery owners in the Dahlonega Plateau wine-growing area.

Doghobble Wine Farm's tasting pavilion will open May 5, providing views of the 80 pastoral acres. Courtesy of Sam Zamarripa

Doghobble is focused on indigenous grapes known as American varietals, which need little intervention. Lomanto grapes are disease- and drought-resistant, winter-hardy and thrive in diverse terrain. They are intensely colored, with firm acidity and a fruit-forward taste. Norton grapes, which are highly adaptable to diverse soils and climates, have dark fruit, a robust flavor profile and spice notes.

Along with building into the existing landscape and focusing on sustainable crops, the Zamarripas limit exposure to and dependency on herbicides and pesticides at Doghobble. Icelandic Shetland sheep graze on vineyard grass and recirculate soil nutrients.

“That’s by design,” Zamarripa said. “We think that translates into grapes that are cleaner, and it’s a better practice for agribusiness and agriculture.”

There are no preservatives in the wines, which can be ready to drink within six months.

There are quite a few animals at Doghobble Wine Farm, including alpacas, donkeys, chickens, sheep and guineas. Courtesy of Sam Zamarripa

Guests will be able to sip some of Doghobble’s offerings at the new tasting pavilion, which is set to open in mid-May, providing pastoral views that not only will include the Shetland sheep, but five alpacas, 50 chickens and 40 guineas.

Travel | Georgia: Tasting and toasting in the cradle of wine

S ipping wine in Georgia is similar to enjoying velvety gelato in Italy or gorging on sinuous sushi in Japan. For a tiny Caucasian nation, Georgia has an immensely rich winemaking tradition, dating back 8,000 years. Archaeological evidence reveals that Georgians were the first to discover that grape juice could be turned into wine by burying pressed, whole grapes, with their skin, stem and pips, in an egg-shaped clay pot called qvevri and leaving it to ferment for five to six months. This unique, traditional Georgian wine-making technique is UNESCO listed for its cultural value and passed down through generations. Hence, Georgian families and communities produce their own wine which often flows liberally, in elegant glassware, over an endless stream of toasts by the tamada (toastmaster) at a supra (celebration or feast), whatever the occasion.

Vino is so indispensable to Georgian identity and sense of pride that wine cellars are considered holy places, wine-drinking paraphernalia have been found at ruins and burial sites, and home gardens are adorned with grape-vine wrapped trellises. Expect to see wine and vines as carvings on tombs; on artwork and sculptures depicting the local way of life and in the form of local staples like churchkhela (walnut candy made from grape juice), and chacha (a strong liquor made from grape pomace).

From grape to glass on the Kakheti Wine Route

Synonymous with rolling vineyards, Kakheti, the eastern enclave of Georgia, cultivates around 70 per cent of the country's grape harvest. Spending time in its fairytale towns comes with learning to pronounce some tongue-twisting grape varieties such as Saperavi, Rkatsiteli and Mtsvane, meeting the winemakers at maranis (tiny, family-owned wine cellars), savouring wine along with the hearty local cuisine and more. Rule of thumb: You must say :Gaumarjos!: every time you raise your glass.

Word to the wise: Ditch the widely-promoted Kakheti day trip from Tbilisi, instead, set aside three full days for meaningful exploration. These are some of the must-dos on the Kakheti Wine Route, a scenic sign-posted circuit.

Tsinandali—A village of many firsts

Once compared by French Author Alexandre Dumas to paradise, the village of Tsinandali is where Georgians were first introduced to the classical European style of winemaking by Romantic poet and military man Alexander Chavchavadze at the beginning of the 19th century. It's almost logical to begin here since the first bottle of qvevri wine was also corked here! Today, both antique and modern winemaking methods coexist in this idyllic village.

For a peek into the past, head to Prince Chavchavadze's sprawling, leafy estate which is home to the ornate Chavchavadze Palace Museum, one of the most significant cultural heritage monuments in Kakheti. Browse through the rooms filled with vintage furniture, musical instruments, crockery, paintings, photography, lithography and accoutrements from the days of the Chavchavadze dynasty. Combine it with a visit to the open-air cellar on the palace premises for a glass of Tsinandali wine. At the neighbouring enotheque, you can also browse through Chavchavadze's personal collection of over 16,500 historical vintages along with winemaking ephemera.

Where to stay: A Radisson Collection Hotel and a harmonious part of the Chavchavadze Estate, Tsinandali Estate offers tastefully decorated rooms with breath-taking views, a rooftop infinity pool overlooking the Caucasus Mountains, a spa, a posh library bar, restaurants serving delightful Georgian and European cuisines and access to the Estate's historical winery and gardens.

Packages start at 450 GEL (Rs 13,500) per night for two, and includes a lavish breakfast; https://www.radissonhotels.com/en-us/hotels/radisson-collection-tsinandali-georgia

Word to the wise: Consider spending two nights in Tsinandali which makes for a good base to explore the surrounding wineries and the city of Telavi which is just a 15-minute drive from the estate.

Museum visit, tasting and luncheon at Shumi Winery

Founded in 2001, Shumi Winery in Tsinandali houses a museum with wine-related exhibits as old as 6,000 years, maps and more. Pop into their atmospheric marani where wines are made in qvevri vessels and aged in oak barrels, followed by the cellar vault which hosts a library of Shumi's best wine bottles, all purposefully left caked in dust to protect the wine from light.

Word to the wise: Visit the winery around lunchtime: Meals and tastings take place in a pretty garden decorated with fountains and sculptures made by local artists.

Packages start at 35 GEL (Rs 1,050) for tours and tastings; https://www.facebook.com/SHUMIWINERY/

Telavi—Georgia's medieval wine capital

Telavi, sitting at the foothills of the Gombori Mountains and oozing a big village vibe, is the capital city of Kakheti. Start your wine-centric tour at the Telavi Historical Museum. Take time to gawk at paintings by homegrown artist Jemal Khutsishvili who depicts Kakheti's vineyard landscapes and daily rituals like the wine harvest.

For some insights into the ancient Georgian art of qvevri production, visit the Kbilashvili family workshop. Watch father-son duo, Remi and Zaza build the wine-making clay vessel from the very scratch.

Telavi is loaded with cheese bars fit for epicureans. Wrap up with an evening spent indulging in local wines paired with an elaborate Georgian cheese board at the cosy and stylish Odlisi on the architecturally rich Cholokashvili Street.

Word to the wise: It's best to opt for a chauffeur-driven car to be able to cover all the highlights in a day, without losing any time looking for transport.

Sighnaghi—a picture-perfect town overlooking the Alazani Valley

An hour and a half's drive from Telavi is Sighnaghi, the flawless denouement to your Kakhetian wine drama. Characterised by narrow, cobblestone streets lined with carpet sellers, pretty arches and pastel, rust-roofed houses, Georgia's fairytale, walled town is full of wineries, bistros and cafes that offer dreamy panoramic views of the Alazani Valley's patchwork fields and the peaks of the Greater Caucasus. Sighnaghi sunsets are particularly splendid! When here, think of slow meals at local family-run restaurants and wineries like Okro's Wine, a cosy cellar with a terrace setting or Pheasant's Tears that serves home-style Georgian dishes with a nice selection of wines.

Where to stay: Spend a night at Kabadoni, a spa hotel in the historical centre. Its enchanting rooms and public spaces come with colourful Georgian and Eastern motifs, rugs and carpets.

Packages start at 388 GEL (Rs 11,640) per night; includes a hearty breakfast; http://kabadoni.ge/

DA Fani Willis testified she paid cash during trips with top prosecutor. One winery host remembers her paying in paper bills

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

After spending more than two hours tasting wine at a Napa Valley estate with her top prosecutor on the Georgia election subversion case, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis reached into her purse and pulled out about $400 in cash.

Willis used the money to pay for two bottles of wine – each valued at roughly $150 – and the $50 tasting, according to Stan Brody, who said he hosted Willis and a guest he later learned was Nathan Wade, at Acumen Wines in early 2023.

Brody, who was the estate ambassador for Acumen Wines that day, told CNN he was surprised when Willis paid using hundreds of dollars in cash – a memorable transaction, he said, as such cash sales are rare in Napa Valley. The self-described “news junkie” said his memory was jogged as he watched Willis and Wade testify last week about their romantic relationship and bat down allegations of self-dealing while under oath.

Willis testified last week that her use of cash explains why there is no paper trail documenting reciprocal payments she made during her trips with Wade. Brody’s account corroborates at least part of that testimony and lends credibility to Willis’ argument that her cash expenditures show she did not benefit financially from her relationship with Wade and thus she should not be disqualified from the case. Willis’ father, John Floyd, testified at length about his longtime recommendation that his daughter keep cash around.

“I ran(g) up the thing and I showed her. I was expecting a credit card quite frankly,” Brody recalled to CNN in an interview Monday. “And she says I’ll pay cash. And so that was that. So then I just put the cash in, made change for her and she was very generous to me.”

Brody told CNN he has not talked to the DA’s office or defense counsel, seeking to disqualify Willis from the Georgia case about the visit to Acumen wines in 2023. Willis’ office declined to comment.

Defense attorneys for Donald Trump and other co-defendants want a judge to disqualify Willis’ team from the criminal case – or throw out the charges – over allegations the district attorney benefited financially from her relationship with Wade, whom Willis hired in 2021 to join the prosecution team.

During her testimony, Willis was peppered with questions about her claim that she reimbursed Wade in cash for trips to Aruba, the Bahamas and Belize, as well as for wine tastings, chocolates and caviar in Napa Valley.

Wade also testified that Willis paid cash for excursions on at least one vacation and paid him back for plane flights and other travel. “She paid for the excursions so the expenses sort of balanced out,” he said.

“When I travel I always pay cash,” Willis said of the trips with Wade, saying that she paid Wade back for certain transportation and excursions during the travel.

“He likes wine, I don’t really like wine to be honest with you,” Willis said during her testimony, which at times grew tense . “I like Grey Goose.”

Explaining why there were no receipts for Willis’ reimbursements and other payments, Wade said he wasn’t keeping a ledger of what he paid for versus what Willis paid for.

“In a relationship, ma’am, you don’t – particularly men, we don’t go asking back for anything. So you’re not keeping a ledger of things that you pay for versus the thing that she’s paid for,” Wade said. “Which is why I said that it was a point of contention because she was very emphatic and adamant about this independent, strong woman thing. So she demanded that she pay her own way.”

Wade testified before Willis took the stand that Willis repaid him in cash for a trip to Belize but that he didn’t have a record of it. Willis said she re-paid Wade $2,500 for that trip.

Brody looked back on his time with Willis and Wade positively.

“These are really nice people,” he said. “I treat people at the winery every time … as if you’re sitting in my living room. And they were the kind of people that if I was having a party at my home that I would have invited. That’s what I came away with.”
