Investing in People, Planet, and Prosperity

The overall disruption in the tourism sector brought about by COVID-19, provides an opportunity to redefine and recalibrate the direction and narratives of tourism investments for a more sustainable future for the People, the Planet, and prosperity.

This  World Tourism Day 2023 , the  UNWTO ,  under the theme “Tourism and green investment” highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments for the  Sustainable Development Goals , the UN roadmap for a better world by 2030. Now is the time for new and innovative solutions, not just traditional investments that promote and underpin economic growth and productivity.

The UN World Tourism Organization has prepared a website and digital materials for social networks. Let’s all contribute to promote tourism investments focused on achieving a better world for the benefit of all.

How tourism should invest to contribute to the SDGs

The possibilities of strategic investment for this triple dimension are immense:

For the People by investing in education and skills

Looking ahead, the global tourism workforce will require millions of hospitality graduates annually between now and 2030 and a further 800,000 jobs a year will require specific vocational training. For these reasons, we need to invest in people, as they are the foundation of tourism so that all those who wish to be part of the sector have the same opportunities to access quality tourism training, anywhere in the world.

For the Planet by investing in sustainable infrastructure and accelerating green transformation

Looking into the future, the need to reduce emissions provides an investment opportunity of $24.7 trillion in the green buildings sector of emerging market cities by 2030, in which hotels, resorts, and restaurants account for $1.5 trillion. In addition, tourism faces a lot more investment opportunities related to new solutions and technologies to decarbonize the sector as well as to ensure climate-resilient infrastructure through adaptation solutions.

For Prosperity by investing in innovation, technology, and entrepreneurship

Digitalization and innovation programs are a strategic priority to support particularly young people and women, which are critical to upskill the tourism sector’s workforce. Moreover, the global need to increase investments in programs that support and incentivize entrepreneurship and generate opportunities for innovations is highly need it in the tourism sector.

In order to succeed, let’s make this World Tourism Day a call to action to the international community, governments, multilateral financial institutions, development partners, and private sector investors to unite around a new tourism investment strategy .

What is the Glasgow Declaration?

The Glasgow Declaration is a compromise to accelerate climate action in tourism and to secure strong commitments to support the global goals to halve emissions over the next decade and reach Net Zero emissions as soon as possible before 2050. Over 450 organizations have become signatories of this declaration.

Did you know?

  • Tourism employs one in every ten people on Earth.
  • Tourism in rural areas can particularly benefit traditionally disadvantaged groups such as women - who make up 54% of the workforce in the tourism sector compared to 39% for the whole economy - youth and Indigenous people.
  • In emerging destinations, 50% of young people are unable to work in tourism due to a lack of opportunity, resources, or access to academic training.

We created a two day experience for UNWTO World Tourism Day 2023 hosted by the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Tourism in Riyadh. The experience brought together global tourism leaders and sector experts to explore the theme of "Tourism and Green Investments," to foster mutual understanding, build bridges, and safeguard cultural heritage and environmental conservation, thereby contributing to a more harmonious world.

World Tourism Day is a global platform to celebrate the sector's achievements and address its challenges. Saudi Arabia's hosting of this prestigious occasion reflects the nation's commitment to placing tourism and sustainability at the forefront of its Vision 2030 transformation. With the world's fastest post-pandemic sector recovery among G20 countries, Saudi Arabia showcases its leadership and innovation in the tourism community, aligning with the UNWTO's three pillars of people, planet, and prosperity.

The Ministry of Tourism partnered with Imagination to design and deliver the Conference which invited 40 speakers and hundreds of delegates to discuss global tourism and green investments over two days at the Four Seasons, Riyadh. The central theme of unity emphasises Saudi Arabia's key role in future global tourism collaboration.

Guests enjoyed a gala dinner at At-Turaif, the UNESCO World Heritage site at historic Diriyah. The evening began with a sensory global journey through five continents - Australasia, Asia, Africa, Europe, and South America. Each continent featured kinetic sculptures and calligraphy interpreting international poems in celebration of the Saudi Year of Arabic Poetry. Guests were immersed in the culture and traditions of each continent through projected animations and live experiences , which included Australian Indigenous Dot Art, Japanese tea ceremonies, North African Henna art, and more. The journey culminated with Saudi hospitality, Arabic coffee, and traditional music.

Guests - including Prime Ministers, Ministers, and VVIPs - enjoyed a five-course dining experience crafted by Chef Jason Atherton and rising Saudi culinary talents in front of the majestic Salwa Palace. The evening featured immersive performances aligning with the themes of unity and included calligraphy, piano duets, drum collaborations, orchestras, and a 100-strong Ardah performance.

“Our vision for World Tourism Day was to bring together guests from all across the globe for a truly immersive celebration of culture and heritage.

Tourism is a key component of Vision 2030 and Diriyah’s iconic At-Turaif Unesco World Heritage Site was selected as the stunning backdrop for a spectacular evening of music, gastronomy, and meaningful cultural exchange.

The main objective of tourism is to bring people together, deepen our understanding of our unique heritage, and experience what unites us all. This event delivered on that promise,” said HRH Princess Deena Nahar Al Saud.

Imagination CEO, Patrick Reid, said "In partnership with The Ministry of Tourism, we proudly brought World Tourism Day to Saudi Arabia, aligning with the UNWTO's Vision 2030 goals of people, planet, and prosperity. Through previous initiatives like the Saudi Arabia E-visa launch in 2019, we've helped open the doors for global travellers to explore Saudi's rich heritage and vibrant culture, helping shape a future where tourism fuels economic growth, creates jobs, and welcomes millions of visitors by 2030, making Saudi Arabia a beacon of sustainable tourism worldwide."

World Heritage Day 2024: An Overview of Heritage Tourism and UNESCO’s Impact

T oday, April 18, 2024, marks the 41st installment of World Heritage Day, also known as the International Day for Monuments and Sites.

Organized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), this annual event aims to celebrate the world’s historic buildings and manmade monuments, raise public awareness, and highlight the need to protect them.

Every year, new sites earn World Heritage status.

In 2023, UNESCO inscribed 45 of them. These included Viking-age ring fortresses in Denmark, the Andrefana dry forests of Madagascar, and a striking network of karst and cave systems in Italy . It brought the total number of heritage locations to 1,199 in 168 countries.

Europe and North America host the lion’s share, with 565 sites. Asia and the Pacific have the second largest number, with 289. Latin America and the Caribbean are home to 149, Africa has 103 heritage sites, and the Arab States have 93.

Defining and Protecting World Heritage

Each World Heritage listing falls into one of three categories : cultural, natural, or mixed.

Examples of cultural heritage include ancient buildings, historic towns, prominent archaeological sites, and even works of art. Natural heritage locations may showcase rare or outstandingly beautiful natural phenomena or be home to endangered fauna and flora.

Mixed sites, which contain elements of both cultural and natural heritage, are by far the least common type of listing.

Regardless of location or category, every World Heritage location has something in common. They’re deemed of “outstanding universal value” and meet at least one of 10 criteria for selection.

They may “represent a masterpiece of human creative genius,” for instance, or “be an outstanding example of a type of building…which illustrates significant stage(s) in human history.” As a result, they’re considered worth celebrating and protecting for future generations.

Nonetheless, many are at risk.

The List of World Heritage in Danger contains 56 locations, including Abu Mena in Egypt and Palmyra in the Syrian Arab Republic. Being added to this list means the World Heritage Committee can issue immediate financial support to the site from the World Heritage Fund .

Heritage Tourism: A Mixed Blessing?

Future generations aren’t the only beneficiaries of identifying and protecting UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Earning the title brings international recognition that delivers a sizable economic boost.

A recent study in Italy found that the UNESCO designation increased income per capita by more than 2%. Property prices were similarly impacted, with luxury dwellings in urban areas climbing more than 10% in value.

According to the authors, money enters local economies in two primary ways. One is via a “gentrification channel,” whereby demand for housing increases among “affluent individuals attracted by the amenity value of [World Heritage List] sites.”

The second is from an influx of tourists.

Heritage tourism was a $557 billion industry in 2021, and it is expected to grow by 3.8% annually until 2030. Market intelligence company My Travel Research describes heritage visitors as “high-yield” tourists who spend more daily and stay longer than other travelers.

This industry is a significant source of employment, too. Culture and heritage tourism directly support more than 50 million jobs in APEC countries alone.

Yet UNESCO’s endorsement can also have drawbacks.

By putting these locations on the proverbial map, it can lead to eventual overtourism and commercialization. In an oft-cited 2014 essay in the New Left Review, Italian journalist Marco D’Eramo calls this Unescocide and describes receiving a World Heritage listing as “the kiss of death.”

Countries With the Most World Heritage Sites

With 59 heritage locations , Italy now has the most UNESCO sites on the planet. Some are infamous, such as Venice and its lagoon. Another is the historic center of Rome , which has some of the best things to do in Bel Paese . Others are less well-known, including the medieval Castel del Monte or the Villa d’Este in Tivoli.

China is home to the second-largest number of UNESCO sites. It currently has 57 in total, including four mixed heritage locations. Among the most notable is the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor, which contains the famous terracotta warriors.

France and Germany share third place, with 52 heritage locations each. Spain has 50 properties inscribed on the World Heritage List, putting it in fourth place. Next is India, with 42, followed by Mexico, with 35, and then the United Kingdom, which has 33.

The Russian Federation now has 31 UNESCO sites, Iran boasts 27, and Japan and the United States of America both have 25.

Sights of Elektrostal, Moscow region

In the Moscow region there is a small cozy town Elektrostal. Its sights for the most part have no historical value due to the fact that the city has a relatively small history. But for a visiting tourist or city dweller, they will be of interest. There is something to see, where to go to have an exciting leisure time.

Today the population of the city is 158 thousand people. Until the beginning of the 20th century there were several small workers' settlements here. After the opening of the electrometallurgical and equipment factories, the place began to be called the natural boundary of Calm. The construction of the railway made this settlement accessible, and workers and families flocked here to earn money. In 1925, the station was named Elektrostal, and the rapid increase in population allowed the village to receive the status of a city.

The founder of the city is a prominent Russian industrialist Nikolai Vtorov. It was he who opened the plant here, creating, in fact, a city-forming enterprise that is still operating. In Soviet times, it was a closed facility, and it was not easy to get to work here.

Today Elektrostal is a promising industrial city with a great future and a heroic past. It bears the proud name "City of Military and Labor Glory".

You can learn about the sights of Elektrostal with descriptions and photos here. There are places for walking, outdoor activities and cultural development.

sights of the electric steel of the Moscow region

Those who come to the city by train are met by a monument to the metallurgist. It was installed in November 2017 for the 100th anniversary of the Elektrostal plant. The attraction is made in the style of constructivism. The monument quickly won the love of the townspeople, because this city is supported by ordinary workers.

Elektrost altsy and the founding father of the plant, Nikolai Vtorov, are honored. In 2002, a monument was opened in honor of him, which became a landmark of the city of Elektrostal. The bronze sculpture is installed on the site where once stood a monument to the leader of the world proletariat, V. I. Lenin. Times change, characters change. Today, the plant, founded a century ago, is the largest in Russia. Vtorov himself, whose fortune was estimated at 60 million rubles in gold, according to Forbes magazine, was the owner of the largest capital at the beginning of the century. He was a banker, an industrialist, an entrepreneur, a man of action.

The monument was erected byinitiative of the townspeople who wished to perpetuate the monument to the great man.

One of the popular places for spending weekends and evenings among citizens and guests of the city is the Park of Culture and Leisure. Here you can ride attractions for children and adults, play slot machines, rollerblade or bike. The park is divided into two zones. Fans of unhurried walks in the fresh air make a promenade on the Quiet Alley, and those who prefer outdoor activities flock to the Entertainment Alley. The park has a summer stage, where concerts and cafes are regularly held.

Until 1999, there was no central museum among the attractions of Elektrostal in the Moscow Region. The expositions were exhibited in schools, the house of culture, in factory museums. The city was closed, so there was no large influx of tourists and visitors. The appearance of the historical and art museum made it possible for residents and guests of the city to learn a lot of useful information about their native land, the formation of the production process, and the difficult years of the war. The exposition consists of paintings by local artists, historical artifacts, household items, documents, books and much more. The collection is updated regularly. It also hosts outdoor exhibitions, which are always popular with the townspeople.

One of the main attractions of Elektrostal, the photo of which is available to almost every resident or visitor, is the Main Alley. On herpassers-by like to stroll along shady paths, townspeople rest by the fountain after a hard shift at the plant. Flower beds are the decoration of the alley. In 2006, a flower festival was held here for the first time, which has become traditional. Each enterprise of the city and private individuals give residents a real composition of fresh flowers, which pleases with bright colors all summer long. A riot of colors, aromas and a flight of fantasy reigns here. Walking through the park, you can see Snow White with a basket, a bright well, a multi-tiered cake made from fresh flowers, hearts of lovers or a fabulous house. It is almost impossible not to take a photo against the background of these compositions.

There is a cultural center in the city. It hosts performances by local creative teams and visiting stars, performances and circus performances.

In 1971, the ice palace "Crystal" was opened in the city. Almost immediately, a children's and youth hockey team was organized, which gained sports fame. This is the home sports arena for the Elektrostal hockey team. Matches of different levels are held on the ice.

There are sections for children who go in for hockey or figure skating. Citizens come here with their families to cheer for their favorite team or go ice skating.

Elektrostal is a city with a heroic past. During the war years, more than 12 thousand citizens came to the recruiting station and went to the front to defend their homeland. Almost 4 thousand of them did not return from the battle. To these heroesdedicated to the memorial complex with the inextinguishable Eternal Flame, opened in 1968

But the electricians took part in the war in Afghanistan and Chechnya. By decision of the city authorities, their memory is also immortalized in the memorial complex.

It has become a good tradition for newlyweds to lay flowers at this monument.

attractions of the city of Elektrostal

In 1999, a museum and exhibition complex was opened in the city, where, in addition to the exhibition hall, there are numerous circles for children, classes for young people, and a creative workshop. Various festivals, exhibitions, city holidays and other events are held within the walls and on the territory of the complex, which attract many spectators.

Elektrostal attractions

Listing the sights of Elektrostal, it is impossible not to mention the temples. There are several of them in the city: the church of St. John of Kronstadt, St. Andrew's Church, the hospital church of St. Panteleimon. Another new church is being built. In appearance, the temples look ancient, monumental, in the Novgorod style. But they were all built at the end of the 20th century.

Let there be no ancient artifacts among the sights of Elektrostal. But on the other hand, all of them are connected with the history of the city, with everyday work and military exploits of ordinary residents.
