Walking vs hiking vs trekking.

Outline of a running shoe with a red strip on the side

Our walking trips will take you on defined tracks and over smooth surfaces – think the grasslands of northern Thailand, rice paddies in Mai Chau, and New Zealand's idyllic Queen Charlotte Track. There’s no need for fitness preparation or specialized equipment; just you, your comfortable walking shoes, and a healthy sense of adventure. And we promise there’s not a base camp in sight.

Outline of a hiking shoe with red patch at the top

Make your way up magnificent mountains, through concentrated bushland, and across rugged, countryside trails on our range of leader-led hiking trips. Harder and longer than a walk but less physically demanding than a trek, hikes are the perfect in-between for those who still want to thoroughly explore the great outdoors without all the fuss of proper equipment.

An outline of a person carrying a backpack

Treks are often in remote destinations where the trails are barely visible, and the terrain makes it harder to traverse without specialized equipment. These treks range from tackling Kilimanjaro to testing your limits at Everest Base Camp and generally feature high altitudes and overnight stops with basic accommodation. Yep, say goodbye to showers and hello to unforgettable memories.

Boasting the world’s highest peak and the number one spot on every bucket list, this larger-than-life mountain range will have you challenging yourself in every way. But for the unbelievable views you’ll come across and the Himalayan culture you’ll be treated to, the trek to its base is worth it every time.

Trek your way through the Annapurna Range in Nepal

Impressive? Check. Challenging? Check? Unforgettable? Check – the Annapurna Range in Nepal ticks all the boxes. Remarkably different from the neighbouring Everest region, this trek boasts the best of monolithic mountain scenery and Himalayan culture for views and experiences that will quickly fill up your camera roll. From forests full of flame-red rhododendrons to fiery sunsets against Machhapuchhare Mountain, your memories of Annapurna will last you a lifetime.

Hike the rugged terrain of South America’s Patagonia

If you want to reconnect with nature, do it by wandering the remote wilderness of Argentina and Chile on what is guaranteed to be an extraordinary adventure. Marvel at the glacial lakes at Laguna Torre, discover the wild beauty of Torres del Paine National Park, point out jagged and impressive mountain peaks, and spot brightly coloured flamingoes as they primp and preen before your eyes. There’s a reason why hiking in Patagonia is as good as it gets.

What is the range of walking & trekking holidays available?

Our walking & trekking tours span the gamut of active adventures from relatively easy, leisurely walks to multi-day challenges in high mountains. We offer a range of tours in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro and the Americas, as well as plenty of classic hikes in Europe, the UK, and Australia.

What are the types of walking & hiking holidays?

We predominantly provide two styles of walking & trekking holidays:

Centre-based – this style of holiday spends all (or majority) of time in the centre of the action. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. Enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once), and a selection of the best restaurants and other attractions in the neighbourhood. All you have to do is sit back and relax as we pick the best combination of walks available either directly from the foot of your accommodation, or just a short transfer away (often a public bus or train). To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best walks and hikes going 'round.

Point-to-point – this style of holiday makes you walk from one place to the other, pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then, depending on the region and the amount of hiking we need to cover on a daily basis. On point-to-point tours, you'll start in A and finish in B. Think about the Inca Trail, the Mount Everest Base Camp trek, the Hadrian’s Wall hike or the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks and a camera).

How safe are walking & trekking holidays?

The safety of our clients (you), staff (us), and all the people around us (our local friends and other trekkers) is our highest priority. This means we don't cut corners. Ever. All our leaders are adequately qualified, experienced, and insured so you don't need to worry about a thing. We only hike on well-settled trails and we follow local rules. Always. If the local authorities tell us it’s not advisable to walk certain trails then we won’t. If the weather is not looking good, we'll change our plans. If the trail is too busy, we'll turn around and hike elsewhere. It's as simple as that. We're all about staying safe, enjoying the best trails possible, and being flexible to achieve the best hiking experience for you.

What is included in walking & trekking trips?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: this transportation is often public as that's the way we like to travel). We also include ALL hiking permits, whether it is in the Himalayas or the US National Parks. On top of that, we provide our highly qualified and experienced leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

What level of comfort can I expect on a walking & trekking holiday?

Most of our walking & trekking holidays are in the Intrepid Original standard, staying in small, authentic, and atmospheric 2–3-star hotels, using public transport where possible, and including all breakfasts, as well as some dinners and lunches depending on the travel destination. However, some of the trips are in the Intrepid Basix style – in most cases, these are trips featuring more remote itineraries such as in the Himalayas, Kilimanjaro, or Morocco. We then stay in either local guesthouses (or so-called teahouses in the Himalayas), or we camp. We often use private transfers on these trips too, as public transport options may not be available. Camping can be quite comfortable with spacious tents, clean water available, and where possible, a toilet tent set up. But we also want to make the experience as authentic as possible so you can always opt to camp under the stars.

How sustainable are walking & hiking trips?

Sustainability is at the centre of everything we do, and walking & trekking holidays are no different. In fact, spending most of the time on your feet, scaling local trailheads is probably as sustainable as it gets. We also try to use public transport as much as possible and contract only small, family-run hotels and guesthouses. We also align our itineraries with local standards and follow all rules set up by local authorities. The hikes we choose are mostly a combination of the iconic trails (aka ones you don't want to miss) and the lesser-known ones, ensuring there's a little bit of everything.

What to pack for walking & hiking trip?

All itineraries feature a packing list on the 'Essential Trip Information' document. Please read it carefully as it may contain trip-specific items you must bring. On a higher level, you always need to pack a backpack/day bag to accompany you on your daily walks, comfortable walking shoes or boots (depending on the trip), good trekking clothing (combination of lightweight and quick drying shorts, pants, short and long sleeve shirts), extra warm layers (sometimes even a down jacket) and waterproof gear. We also highly recommend bringing walking poles as these are very useful on steep ascents and long descents.

Will I be required to carry my own luggage?

The short answer is no. Your main luggage is transported for you on point-to-point itineraries (often by porters, therefore it should be packed in a soft/duffle bag) and your luggage stays in your accommodation for all centre-based itineraries. However, you'll need to bring a small bag/backpack (around 25-30 litre capacity) to carry around all of your essentials (water, snacks, extra layer, waterproofs) when you're on the move.

Do I need any special insurance?

You will need to have insurance that will cover hiking and trekking in certain destinations up to a certain elevation (in the Himalayas, Peru, and a few other destinations that feature altitude hikes). But you won't need any special insurance to cover technical activities. However, to be 100% certain your cover is adequate for the trip you're doing, we suggest you talk to an insurer and present the planned itinerary of your chosen trip.

How big are the group sizes?

The maximum group size is 12 people on the majority of walking & trekking trips, however, some itineraries may go up to 16 people. But, on average, there are 7-10 people on each departure.

Are walking & hiking holidays suitable for solo travellers?

Absolutely! In fact, most of our customers are travelling solo, and there is no extra fee for doing so. One thing to note is that if are travelling solo, you'll be room-sharing with another solo traveller of the same sex. If you would prefer to have your own room, please speak to your booking agent as we're often able to accommodate this at an extra fee.

What ages are the group holidays suitable for?

The minimum age on our walking & trekking holidays is predominantly 15 (on some itineraries we can accept a lower age – sometimes even 12, so please enquire at the time of booking). But there is no maximum age limit. We’ll accept everyone who’s keen and physically ready for the challenge (no screening form needed – we trust your own judgement), regardless of age. After all, age is really only a state of mind, right?

Will I get altitude sickness?

On some of our hikes you will encounter high altitudes. When climbing above 2,800 metres (9,200 feet), it is common for travellers to experience some adverse health effects due to the altitude, regardless of your age, gender and fitness. It even happened to Sir Edmund Hillary!

There’s no real way to tell how your body will react to the rigours of altitude trekking, so it is important that you monitor your condition and discuss any prevailing symptoms with your guide. If you have any pre-existing conditions that could be exacerbated by high altitudes, be sure to get them checked out by a doctor before you leave.

But above all, try not to worry, most of our travellers shake off the effects of altitude pretty quickly and enjoy a safe and rewarding trek.

How fit do I need to be to go on a walking & trekking trip?

We have walks ranging from relatively easy to rather challenging. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose to walk, we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness to ensure that you get the most out of your walk or hike. Try to commit to some type of physical training program around six weeks before you depart. Here are some suggestions: Long walks: go on some long walks of 3-6 hours duration before you leave, wearing the boots you’re taking and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches. Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling and the various aerobic classes offered at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba and circuit classes) all help to give you fitness and stamina. Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your muscle strength, which is needed for the steady climb up a mountain if you’re embarking on this type of hike (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training).

Frequently asked questions.

GuruWalk is an international community for pay-what-you-please walking tours that connects tourists with tour guides all around the world. Our mission is for you to be able to enjoy this type of tour in any place you can imagine.

The GuruWalk community is formed by "gurus" (local guides) who are open, attentive, fun people with great knowledge of the city and who will be your friends wherever you travel.

The other part of the community are the "walkers," or tourist who opt for this type of tour over the more traditional tours, who enjoy unforgettable experiences and most importantly, love to travel around the world doing guruwalks.

A "free walking tour" is a guided tour at a travel destination, where a local guide explains history, culture, and lifestyle. Currently, it is the first option that tourists choose when they visit a new city.

The concept can be a little confusing since "free" in English is a word that immediately makes you think free of cost. While becoming a part of the community, making a booking, or setting up a tour on the platform is 100% free, the traveler has to pay the guide at the end of the tour based on his experience. This concept is commonly referred to as a pay-what-you-please walking tour, because it empowers the client to pay based on their satisfaction with the tour and encourages the guide to always do their best.

At GuruWalk, we call them "guruwalks" so our walkers don’t get confused with the concept. Our intention is for them to understand the concept better and then give a fair remuneration to their Guru, so that we can all keep enjoying this type of tour all across the world.

Look for the city that you want to visit and then choose from all the guruwalks that are available, the different themed experiences, the different neighborhood and the various types of activities to find the best option for you. Book the tour for free through the online platform, receive the email confirmation with all the info and you’re ready to go!

All that’s left to do is show up to the guruwalk to enjoy and learn about other cultures in a fun and entertaining way. Don’t forget to tip your guru’s good work and have a great time.

The star question that the walkers always ask! You choose how much to give, you can take into consideration how satisfied you were with the tour and how much you can afford.

Our gurus are the best tour guides who are at it day after day, who are creating fun and entertaining tours so you can get to know the most important aspects of a city, they know a lot about the city you’re visiting and they’ll help you to have the trip of a lifetime.

This is why most walkers on GuruWalk generally give between 10 o 20€ per person, but as we said, you can choose to give more or less depending on your experience.

If you’d like to join our community of international gurus, all you have to do is click the link here. We’re waiting to get to know you!

The Best Walking Tours in the World

Best Walking Tours

Ryder-Walker’s Favorite Guided and Self-Guided Walking Tours

Everyone at Ryder-Walker is eager to share what we believe to be the best walking tours in the world. Walking tours are hikes which we consider to be less strenuous or committing than full-on treks, while still maintaining the rhythm of hiking in between charming villages and mountain-town and coastal destinations. Join us as we lace up our hiking shoes and hit the highest quality trails in the world on our favorite walking tours.

Self-Guided Walking Tours

A Self-Guided walking tour is the perfect chance to get away from the day to day and spend some time either with friends, family, or on your own in the mountains or meandering a coastal path, at your own pace, and without worrying about getting in over your head. Our favorite Self-Guided walking tours include:

Austria Alpine Mozart Lakes Walk

The Austria Alpine Mozart Lakes Walk is the perfect walking tour, designed around a pace of life that is never strenuous, the hike wanders through the most charming lakeside villages in Austria, including Mozart’s hometown of St. Gilgen and the award-winning historic village of Hallstatt. Focused on excellent food and accommodation, this mountain walk ends every day on the shores of a beautiful alpine lake.

world walking tours

Provence: Hill Towns of the Luberon

Provence itself needs little introduction, however, the Luberon region of Provence is a well-kept secret that has excitingly branched into hiking tourism. The Luberon rises above the plains surrounding Avignon, with rolling hills and Mediterranean forests. The relaxed pace of life in Provence is the perfect setting for a gentle walking tour. Hiking through clustered woodlands, pastoral farmland, and castle-dominated villages will give you a window into the rural lifestyle of the cultural gem of southeastern France. Olive trees, sweeping fields of lavender, and the iconic walled Luberon hill towns all await you on this new adventure.

provence

Spanish Mediterranean: Costa Brava

The Costa Brava is the coastal region that follows the Mediterranean edge of Catalonia. Just outside of the legendary city of Barcelona, the Costa Brava is defined by a collection of seaside villages including Cadaques – the village where Salvador Dali spent many of his days applying the stunning landscape to his imaginative paintings. Hiking in the Costa Brava follows the winding sea cliffs along the rugged coast with regular descents to hidden and isolated beaches.

world walking tours

Rob Roy Way

The Rob Roy Way is a historic route that follows the life of the infamous outlaw Rob Roy Macgregor – a cattle wrangler, clan loyalist, and robin hood adjacent figure. Today the Rob Roy Way wanders through the stunning lochs of the Great Trossachs National Park and into the windswept moors of the Scottish Highlands. Whether you are bonding with flocks of sheep or enjoying a cup of post-walk tea, the heart of the Scottish Highlands is sure to speak to you.

world walking tours

Tuscany, Italy: A Path Through History

The rolling fields of Tuscany are one of the most history-rich regions in the world. Immaculately preserved medieval castles and villages dot the landscape including San Gimignano, warmly referred to as the medieval Manhattan. Our route follows the Via Francigena, a historic pilgrim’s trail which follows the remains of the Roman road built by Caesar to connect the North Sea to the Mediterranean. The culmination of the route is in stunning Siena, a city defined by its winding alleys and massive gothic cathedrals, with the additional opportunity to visit the nearby gateway in Florence, where a bohemian youth and art culture thrives.

world walking tours

Cotswolds Way

The Cotswolds Way is considered one of the treasures of England. Any English hiker will get a dreamy look in their eye when you mention the Cotswolds, and there is a great reason for it! This classic walk takes you into the most charming heart of the English countryside. Complete with thatched roofs, abandoned castles, and the ancient Roman city of Bath, the Cotswolds are equally historic and charming.

world walking tours

The Dingle Way is a lesser known but highly worthy hiking trail in Western Ireland. When we first visited this remote corner of Ireland, we were amazed by how happy the Dingle Locals were to see hikers traveling through their towns – because they knew they had something special! The Irish coastline strikes a jagged profile against the Atlantic, which blows in thick coats of morning mist. The mythology and mystery of rural Ireland are tangible in Dingle, whether you are enjoying a pint in the pub, or walking atop a seaside cliff!

world walking tours

Cinque Terre

The Italian Cinque Terre is one of the most immediately striking regions on earth. Looking out over the Tyrrhenian Sea the Cinque Terre is bound by cobalt blue water, with steep seaside cliffs dotted by colorfully painted historic buildings and villas. The Cinque Terre is the most romantic possible walking tour, complete with fresh Italian seafood, dramatic walking trails, and villages such as Monterosso, which barely cling to the steep Tyrrhenian cliffsides.

world walking tours

Cornwall England

Where the Cotswolds represent the perfect pastoral scene, the county of Cornwall represents England at its most dramatic and rugged. This county at the southwestern extreme of England shows the full power and glory of the Celtic Sea – with a barren English landscape to compliment it. Walking along the silent Cornish beaches, through impressive seaside cliff bands, and between remote villages will express the full spirit and history of this remote English peninsula to you.

world walking tours

The Liechtenstein Trail

The Liechtenstein Trail hike was created in collaboration with the Liechtenstein board of tourism, this peaceful trail travels through the sweeping valley that makes up the majority of Liechtenstein with the Swiss Alps rising high above. Liechtenstein itself is a tiny and often overlooked nation wedged in between the most mountainous regions of Switzerland and Austria that has cultural similarities to both nations. Highlights include a visit to the only ski area in Liechtenstein and multiple medieval castles.

Guided Walking Tours

If you prefer to hike with a group of new friends to the relative responsibility of a private guided tour, we also have a collection of more accessible guided walking tours that we consider to be not only some of our most relaxing offerings but also some of the most arresting locations you can visit on earth.

world walking tours

Sedona, Arizona

The desert Southwest of the United States is the home of Ryder-Walker and the landscape which has inspired us to explore the remote corners of the earth. Our guided desert trek focuses on Sedona, Arizona, a popular town with an established reputation for exquisite dining, inspired art galleries and a plethora of outdoor activities. For outdoor enthusiasts, the region offers some of the most unique topography found anywhere in the world with inspiring red rock sandstone arches, hidden canyons and desert wildflowers.

world walking tours

Italian Lakes District Hike: Como, Varenna, Menaggio & Bellagio

Como and Bellagio need no introduction. Famous for glamorous lifestyles, lakeside villas, and visiting celebrities, this region has become synonymous with opulence. However, there is more to the Italian Lakes District , a stunning region in the Italian pre-alps where gorgeous hiking trails ascend high above the sunbathing tourists below. Deep forests, views across the iconic lakes, and all the glitz of the culture surrounding Como await you in this surprisingly mountainous adventure.

New Mexico: Land of Enchantment, Santa Fe to Taos

Ryder-Walker’s unique tour through New Mexico explores the dramatic biome where the desert southwest crashes into the high peaks surrounding Taos. This unique region combines the rust reds of the desert surrounding the missionary town of Santa Fe with the snow-capped peaks surrounding Taos where ski and alpine culture thrives. Highlights of our tour through New Mexico include a hike to the summit of Wheeler Peak where you will get to drink in views of the entire New Mexican landscape and overnight in Chimayo, a tiny village where the Tewa weaving tradition thrives.

Trekking & Walking

Why trek? Because the world's most spectacular wilderness regions can only be reached on foot | Lachlan Gardiner

Explore the world with your own two feet by embarking on a trekking or walking tour with World Expeditions.

There are a million ways to travel, but few resonate in the way that trekking does. Get back to nature, challenge yourself and enter landscapes well beyond our urban environments. Picture yourself enjoying a spontaneous moment as you smile back at a nomadic mountain lady, snack by a rushing stream, follow winding paths that weave through the mountains, and scale rugged and rocky terrain in search of the perfect sunrise. In a nutshell, a trekking trip is all about embracing unique moments, incredible landscapes and new cultures in some of the most isolated parts of the world.

Our trekking & hiking adventures take you to some of the world’s most remote and beautiful locations, with many of our treks beginning where everyone elses treks end.

With some of the most off-the-beaten-track trekking opportunities in the world, you can choose from a range of introductory treks to challenging treks designed to bring you closer to the culture and wilderness of a country. Our responsible travel guidelines have been developed to ensure our trekkers travel with minimal impact on the culture, environment and community, saving the beauty of this world for future generations. Whether it’s camping in semi-permanent campsites to discourage logging in the Himalayas, to hiring local guides, porters and cooks, your presence on one of our trekking trips means that you are helping the local community grow and develop both economically and environmentally.

Best of all, unlike many other trekking providers, our trip prices include the cost of accommodation, food, and transport so there won’t be any surprise hidden expenses while you’re on your trek.

Inclusions & Equipment

Discovery & Cruising

These are our least demanding trips. These journeys of discovery and cruises involve little or no extended activity. The itinerary may take place in remote areas (with basic facilities) and may involve long travel days on various types of transport. Sightseeing may be conducted on foot and all participants should be capable of carrying their own luggage from vehicle to hotel rooms. These adventures do not go above 2500m and rarely involve camping.

Adventure Touring

These adventure tours sometimes involve travel at high altitude (rarely exceeding 4000m, except on certain trips in Tibet, Peru and India) and may visit remote areas of the world where facilities are often basic. Many of these trips sometimes involve some camping or basic lodging. These adventure tours will often involve long journeys and rough roads. Sightseeing and optional day walks are often included and these days may involve up to 5 hours of physical activity.

Introductory

Up to 5 or 6 hours a day at a slow but steady pace

Introductory to Moderate

Introductory walks with several moderate stages

Up to 5-7 hours a day at a steady pace. Treks will involve carrying a day pack and trail conditions will vary between well-defined to rough trails

Moderate walks with challenging stages

Challenging

Often in remote areas in variable, adverse weather conditions, for up to 8 to 10 hours+ a day, possibly more. Be prepared to carry a daypack weighing up to 8 kgs, or in some cases a full pack weighing up to 20kg

Entry Level Mountaineering / Exploratory Treks

Classed as expeditions, they involve either extreme trekking and or basic mountaineering. Expect remote and poorly defined trails in variable weather conditions for up to 12 hours a day (possibly more subject to weather conditions and altitude). This may include a number of demanding high pass crossings and evacuation may be difficult from remote areas.

Intermediate Mountaineering

Participants should be competent and self sufficient in the outdoors and have experience in multi day trekking at altitude. Prior experience on an entry level mountaineering expedition is highly recommended. The terrain will involve low to moderate angle snow slopes and travelling on crevassed glaciers.

Advanced Mountaineering

These are our most challenging expeditions. Most are participatory expeditions & involve load carrying, setting up of camps, cooking and campcraft. Some of these expeditions also involve “technical” climbing and are for experienced alpine climbers / mountaineers only. Technical expeditions involve steep climbing at high altitude (including rock climbing).

The conditions are relatively straightforward and not technically difficult. Expect generally low angled slopes with no prolonged steep or exposed sections and glacier travel where participants are roped together. Abseiling may be required in short sections.

Intermediate

The conditions are variable with generally low angled slopes with some sections of moderately steep snow or easy rock where ropes are required. Some basic rock climbing and abseiling involved.

The conditions are challenging involving steep and exposed snow and ice slopes with sections of rock climbing. Some sections involve abseiling and belaying.

A more serious and technical undertaking involving long and exposed climbing on snow, rock and ice. Competent rope work, efficiency of movement and good technical skills are required.

These journeys of discovery and cruises are suitable for people with a basic level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: Once or twice a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour, for at least 2-3 months prior to departure.

To enjoy these adventures we suggest you have a reasonable level of fitness and health, a moderately active lifestyle and a positive attitude.

Suggested preparation: Two or three times a week, we recommend you walk on undulating terrain for an hour or more, for at least 3 months prior to departure.

Our introductory trips are not ‘easy’ trips and you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 30 minutes of aerobic exercise three times a week, starting at least two to three months before departure. Hill or stair walking with a 5-7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

On these adventures you will need a reasonable level of fitness and good health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45 minutes of aerobic type exercise three times a week, from a minimum of three months period to your departure. Hill or stair walking with a 7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend 45-60 minutes of aerobic type exercise, three to four times a week. Hill or stair walking with a 7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

These adventures require a good level of fitness and excellent health.

Suggested preparation: We recommend one hour of aerobic type exercise, four times a week. Hill or stair walking with a 7kg daypack is also highly recommended at least once a week for leg strengthening and aerobic fitness. We also advise doing some walking in variable weather conditions.

On these challenging adventures, you will need an excellent level of fitness. Some treks may require you to carry a full pack weighing up to 20kg.

Suggested preparation: We suggest up to one hour of strenuous exercise at least four days a week, interspersed with a relatively demanding bushwalk at the weekend. The best exercise for trekking is bushwalking involving relatively steep ascents and descents. Hill walking with a 7kg pack in variable weather conditions is a must. Multi day walks are ideal preparation for our challenging adventures.

To participate in these entry level expeditions or exploratory treks, you must be in excellent health and lead a very active lifestyle. The trips are suitable for first time mountaineers, previous altitude experience is preferable but not essential, and you must be comfortable in adverse weather conditions.

Suggested preparation: Physical fitness should be an ongoing thing, which should start from a base at around four to six months prior to departure and increase to build maximum endurance, stamina, flexibility and familiarity with the anticipated routine as much as possible by your trip commencement. Three to five hard sessions of 45 to 60 minutes of physical exercise per week such as running, hill walking, swimming, cycling or gym work will build excellent aerobic capacity and overall endurance and stamina which are so important in trekking and climbing at altitude. Overnight or multi day bushwalks (on rough, loose and rocky terrain) should be incorporated in your training regime; this develops skill and confidence on difficult terrain you will find on expedition. Rest and recovery, whilst at the same time steadily increasing your routine and incorporating variety, are just as important parts of the process if you intend to maintain and enjoy the regime for any duration.

Please review the ‘Physical Fitness’ section of the detailed trip notes for each expedition to ensure your fitness and training are sufficient.

To participate in intermediate level expeditions, you must be in excellent health and lead a very active lifestyle. Experience with multi-day trekking at altitude is essential. Experience using ice axes and campons is preferable but not essential.

Prior mountaineering experience is essential for participation in these advanced expeditions. Participation is also subject to acceptance by one of our high altitude mountaineering guides. Most are participatory expeditions, involving load carrying, setting up of camps, cooking and camp craft. Some of these expeditions also involve ‘technical’ climbing and are for experienced alpine climbers only.

The exact inclusions and equipment for each of our adventures is listed once you've found the trip you want. Our trips are generally more inclusive than others in the market place in line with our philosophy of minimising 'extra payments' displayed outside of the main trip price as well as out of pocket expenses once you reach your destination.

Great Smoky Mountains, U.S. The Great Smoky Mountains, long regarded as the ancestral homeland of the Cherokee Indians, is a region rich in natural diversity and pioneer history. Named by the Cherokee for the mysterious wisps of blue-gray smoke that often shroud the highest peaks, this majestic mountain range marks the southern climax of the Appalachian chain. Established as a national park in 1934, the area today spans a magnificent 500,000 acres (202,500 hectares), making it the largest wilderness area of the eastern United States. Within proximity of its extensive 900 miles (1,448 kilometers) of walking trails lies an abundant reserve of both natural and historic interests. The Smokies are home to more than 130 species of trees, 1,500 varieties of flowering plants, and 200 types of birds. Nestled within this haven of cascading waterfalls and fantastic mountain vistas stand the preserved remnants of pioneer heritage: the log cabins, farmhouses, grist mills, and barns built in the 18th and 19th centuries by European settlers. Entering into this immense and abundant forest, walkers can retrace a pioneer past that follows the footsteps first marked by the Cherokee Indians.

Quebec, Canada A walking tour throughout this northern wonderland—not far from the region’s hub of Québec City—reveals natural and cultural treasures. The Saguenay Fjord estuary is a unique ecosystem where fresh water blends with sea tide, creating this journey’s special environment. Granite cliffs plunge into the St. Lawrence River, where villages cluster by the water’s edge. There is an extensive trail network in the Saguenay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Granite peaks, brilliant lakes, high gorges, hanging waterfalls, eagles, and snow geese—all are common sights. Nearby are authentic auberge inns to relax in French Canadian comfort.

Cinque Terre, Italy Imagine walking a spectacular coastal path with the Mediterranean on one side, mountains on the other, and Italian fishing villages just ahead. Now multiply that experience by five. Welcome to the captivating region linking the “five villages” of the Cinque Terre. Footpaths cross the terraced slopes of the Riviera di Levante to hamlets with pastel-colored buildings and contrasting shutters and lead to brightly painted boats in small harbors. Walk past trattorias and a solitary abbey to a rocky promontory with the sea always in full view and a clear sky overhead. Stop in at the Splendido hotel in Portofino.Along the route, there’s Ligurian cuisine, including characteristic Italian pesto made from locally grown basil—a source of particular pride among chefs and restaurateurs from these neighboring villages, each one claiming the best recipe. Sciacchetrà is a rare, crisp, fragrant white wine, a specialty harvested from the Cinque Terre’s terraced vineyards. Stop in at the Splendido hotel in Portofino.

Cloud Forests of Costa Rica A cloud forest is a tropical forest that’s usually found near the top of coastal mountains and is covered in clouds throughout most of the year. Walks through those of Costa Rica represent the ultimate encounters with nature’s boundless variety. Traveling on foot, you’ll explore rugged craters and lagoon waterfalls, freshwater ponds and tranquil sea coves. Cloud forest trees tower above, and wide rivers run through lush floral lanes. One part of the adventure provides a lofty perspective on the area’s abundant natural wonders, as you cross bridges suspended high above the forest. Brilliant colors and wild sounds create a vibrant and exotic sensory experience. You’ll find a variety of lodgings in Costa Rica to renew your enthusiasm for another day’s discoveries in this striking land.

Southwest Ireland Timeworn paths invite walkers into a world of splendor and captivating legends here at the British Isles’ westernmost point. Ireland’s historic past comes alive in the southwest region, where ancient abbeys and castles stand alongside quaint country homes. Walk the Dingle Peninsula, past stone cottages set against dramatic cliffs on one side of the route, with small islands far away to sea on the other. Discover ancient Iron Age ruins on the western tip of the peninsula at Slea Head. Follow a path through the moss-carpeted forests in Killarney National Park. Set out by boat to explore historic Inisfallen Island on Lough Leane. Andstroll along County Kerry’s spectacular sand dunes. The walk is also rich in wildlife discoveries; you might see red deer, otter, and great crested grebe, especially around the Lakes of Killarney.Lively pub lunches with a pint of Guinness close at hand in small farming villages offer a sweet taste of local culture. Evenings find the warm embrace of Irish hospitality at splendid village hotels—a highlight is the Cahernane Hotel in Killarney, a former estate of the Earl of Pembroke.

The Oregon Trail Extending from Independence, Missouri, to Oregon City, Oregon, this historic trail was the way west for some 300,000 emigrants for more than 20 years from 1841. Today the trail, traversing 2,170 miles (3,492 kilometers) of road, includes 125 historic sites and many opportunities for walks and hikes. One walking tour begins at the base of volcanic Mount Hood, along the mighty Columbia River, past waterfalls leading to spectacular mountain views and meadows filled with wildflowers. Visit the Pioneer Woman’s Grave near Government Camp, where several trails lead to other historic sites. You can see a replica of the original toll gate that marked an alternate toll road in operation from 1846 to 1919. The Oregon Trail is also rich in the history of Native Americans, whose civilizations in this region reach back thousands of years. This environment also yields a culinary bounty; fine wines, sweet herbs, and fresh salmon all complement the splendor.

Crete Faraway enclaves reachable only by foot or boat distinguish this island destination. You’ll walk past hidden coves, descend into little-known gorges, and follow cobbled pathways to Venetian castles and snow-white beaches on a deep blue sea. These walking days can be stretched with swims, taverna lunches, and picnics under a canopy of olive trees within full view of the Mediterranean. Crete holds the distinction of being home to Europe’s earliest civilization, the Minoan, and its legends and natural treasures run so deep that historians, archaeologists, and travelers alike continue to make bold, new finds. From the old harbor in the fortified town of Chania, to forays into the remote southern coastal reaches of the island, and walks into the palace of King Minos, only Crete’s astonishing natural beauty could possibly rival the region’s historic importance. It is no wonder that fable and fact meet in the Greek islands.

Bhutan Ancient citadels rise on the horizon. Buddhist temples and carved wood farmhouses are discovered along fertile valleys. Swiftly flowing rivers dash across an open landscape, the snowcapped Himalaya towering in the distance. The journey in the Kingdom of Bhutan leads into the heart of a modern-day Shangri-La. Exploring temples and elegant fortresses, called dzongs, on foot helps one experience the serenity that characterizes the Bhutanese way of life. Surrounded by gorgeous mountain vistas, paths lead to hillsides forested with rhododendron and blue pine, golden farm fields with mustard and buckwheat, and rustic villages.Travelers have only recently been allowed to visit Bhutan, and tourists to the country are still limited to a fortunate few. There is a warmth and hospitality to experience in local culture, customs, and ceremonies. From vistas overlooking the Punakha Valley to the intricately patterned Thimphu weavings, the walk has beauty in this peaceful realm.Lodgings in Bhutan are ideally situated for natural scenery—in a forest, overlooking a river, or perched on the rim of a valley. Local cuisine is a unique blend of unusual and piquant tastes.

Switzerland Spirits soar at the sight of the alpine landscape; and what better place to walk than over breathtaking mountains. The average altitude of 4,428 feet (1,351 kilometers) exceeds many of the highest peaks elsewhere. Venturing into two culturally distinct regions and hearing three languages along the way, you can experience variety, wilderness, and Swiss hospitality. Beginning in Kandersteg, chairlifts and gondolas take you to flower-strewn paths, pristine lakes, and waterfalls. Look over the Lauterbrunnen Valley, framed by five summits, ancient glaciers, and mountain ranges that seem to extend forever. There is no better way to end the day than by sharing a fondue and cornichons, topped off with a bite of chocolate.

Nova Scotia, Canada Dark green hills and rugged shorelines create a superb setting for walking adventures in this maritime gem. Paths lead through the heart of the spectacular Cape Breton Highlands National Park. From Cheticamp, an Acadian fishing village famous for its music and rug-hooking, explore headland cliffs where bald eagles soar above. The Gulf of St. Lawrence is 1,000 feet (305 meters) below and leads to an expanse near North Harbour Beach, where there are opportunities to set out to sea on whale-watching tours. Walk through fishing communities with deep Scottish roots, in isolated meadows, along craggy coasts, and on cobblestone beaches.

All my enquiries were replied promply. I was not charged prior to the tour. I booked a Stone Town Walking Tour combined with Spice Tour and Prison Island but then on the spot I changed my mind and requested a Jozani Forest Tour instead. Wadi handled this with extreme patience and flexibility. The tour itself was amazing and the tour guide was very friendly, kind and accommodating as to my snorkelling and photo preferences. Unfortunately we could not do the snorkeling trip to Mnemba Atoll because of the rough weather. The guides advised us against it. So it was a bit disappointing but a safer option. I would use and recommend the services of Blue - Green Zanzibar Tours and Safari again, hopefully in the near future! For a group of 8. Thank you for The Wonderful Tours.”

“I want to thank Wadi, Mohamed, Ali and Ibrahim for an excellent experience in Zanzibar. From having to reschedule the tour to a later date to including my requests during the tour, I had very enjoyable tour with Blue - Green Zanzibar Tours and Safari in Zanzibar. I met with Mohamed at Zanzibar Airport and the tour kickstarted thereafter. Ibrahim joined us in Nungwi Village Tour, had a coffee and time flew by till the Friday prayer time. Foregoing lunch, I took a solo walk down the Village till the tour continued after prayer. Ali is very passionate about the initiative and very knowledgeable about the corals & other fauna of the Zanzibar ecosystem. We had a traditional Zanzibar tea break in the evening before heading back to my Hotel. The entire experience was very nice and I highly recommend touring Nungwi with Blue - Green Zanzibar Tours Team. Keep up the good work, guys! This tour ranks very high among my long and varied world travels.”

“Best time ever in Zanzibar. We did the 5D/4N package. I had a lot of questions before booking the package & they were so quick to respond. Our tour guide arrived on time and was nice, reliable and spoke good English. Overall, great experience. We would have been lost without him! He is a star who made our holidays very memorable. He was very helpful to share information and help us make decisions as it was our first visit to Zanzibar. He is actually a all rounder. From taking Photos to driving safely to sharing and giving information about all the places. He is the best person and the cost for day trip is very reasonable. I compared all the other companies and they are the best. My son wanted to fly his drone & Ibrahim went out of his way to make sure my son had many opportunities to do that. Our Zanzibar vacation was definitely made more enjoyable because of him.”

“Though it is a late review, it is the one I just had to write as the experience was awesome. I visited sand bank then swimming with dolphins with Wadi from Blue - Green Zanzibar Tours and Safari. Zanzibar in itself is a beauty, sand banks are the most amazing thing one should definitely see while in Zanzibar. I was travelling alone with my daughter and Wadi made it a wonderful memorable trip for the little one. He arranges all the activities and is very punctual and apt in replying to all your queries. During these pandemic times they are taking utmost care with very less group size for everyone/s safety which I loved. We very much appreciated the restaurant recommendations we received for dinner near our hotel and for lunch, where we had an ocean view. “Thank You Wadi” for welcoming us so well . We will definitely will contact you guys for our next trip to Zanzibar.”

“A must visit place, has so much to do. Enjoy the serene beaches, which are definitely less crowded. Water sports activities are enjoyable, and varied. Visit to Prison Island, Stone Town City and Maruhubi Ruins, are a must see. Our private driver is Mr. Chum. He was very nice, reliable and patient, with really good knowledge on Zanzibar. In additions, he knew the roads so well so he could avoid the traffic jam. He actually accompanied us every place we visited, explained us all about the place and everything. Always went beyond the call of duty. It's a very well managed agency Shopping for local farms, particularly in Darajani Market, is highly recommended. Comparatively a less heavy on pocket. Food.... mostly, sea food, can be selected live, to be prepared live, to your taste. Would recommend this tour company to every one 100%, aircon was great in car. the service and quality was superb for us! I loved this tour from beginning to end.”

Walking Tour: Kitai Gorod

Kitai Gorod, with its twisting and winding streets, is the oldest section of Moscow outside the Kremlin. The literal translation of Kitai Gorod is "Chinatown," but there has never been a Chinese settlement here. The origin of the word kitai is disputed; it may come from the Tatar word for fortress, but most likely it derives from the Russian word kita, in reference to the bundles of twigs that were used to reinforce the earthen wall that once surrounded the area.

Kitai Gorod begins where Red Square ends. Settlement of this area began in the 12th century, around the time that the fortified city of Moscow was founded on Borovitsky Hill (the site of the present-day Kremlin). By the 14th century Kitai Gorod was a thriving trade district, full of shops and markets. At that time it was surrounded by earthen ramparts, which were replaced in the 16th century by a fortified wall, remnants of which still remain. As Moscow grew, so did Kitai Gorod.

At the time of the Bolshevik Revolution it was the city's most important financial and commercial district, with major banks, warehouses, and trading companies concentrated here. These days the multitude of shops, restaurants, and banks demonstrates the area's reasserted role as an energized commercial center.

A good starting point for your tour is Nikolskaya ulitsa, which begins at the corner opposite the Historical Museum and runs along the north side of GUM. If you are coming from St. Basil's, walk away from St. Basil's toward the Historical Museum alongside GUM. If you are coming from outside of Red Square, get to Nikolskaya by way of Teatralnaya Ploshchad (Theater Square). If you are standing with your back to the Bolshoi on this square, walk straight ahead, cross the street, and enter one of the narrow passageways to the right or left of the Teatralnaya metro station (as you are facing it). Taking a right out of either passageway will bring you to Nikolskaya ulitsa. Go a short way farther to the right, to the cobblestone edge of Red Square, to begin your walk.

Nikolskaya ulitsa, which is named after the Kremlin's Nikolskaya Gate Tower, is one of the oldest streets in Moscow. At the corner with Red Square is the Kazansky Sobor . Leaving the church, take a left to make your way through the teeming crowds of shoppers on Nikolskaya ulitsa to No. 7, the Zaikonospassky Monastyr , the former Slavonic-Greco-Latin Academy now undergoing a slow restoration. Farther down the street, also on the left-hand side, is a once brightly painted white-and-aqua building with an elaborate facade (No. 15). The building was erected in 1810-14 on the site of the 16th-century Pechatny Dvor (Printing Yard), where Russia's first printed book was assembled in 1553. Today the building houses the Moscow Institute of Historical Records and the Moscow Humanitarian University. Cross the street to go down Bogoyavlensky pereulok. Halfway down the block, opposite the entrance to the Ploshchad Revolutsii metro, is the Bogoyavlensky Sobor . Continue down the street to where it intersects with ulitsa Ilinka. Before the 1917 revolution this was Moscow's Wall Street, and it is still lined with the impressive facades of former banks.

On the left-hand corner stands the former Ryabushinsky Bank . As you cross the street, look to your right; ulitsa Ilinka leads directly to the Kremlin's Tower of the Savior. At No. 3 stands the Tserkov Svyatoi Ilii church from which the street takes its name. The church, which dates to 1520, is in disrepair except for its facade. Opposite the church is one of the border streets of the Gostinny Dvor merchant's arcade. Turn left and walk the length of Khrustalny pereulok to reach one of the oldest streets in Moscow, Varvarka ulitsa. The opposite side of the street is lined with quaint old churches and buildings, but the first thing you'll likely notice is the gray bulk of the massive, concrete-and-glass Rossiya, one of Europe's largest and most unattractive hotels.

At the farthest corner of the street, to your right, is the Tserkov Velikomuchenitsy Varvary . Adjacent is the English Court . Next comes the white-stone Tserkov Maksima Blazhennovo . The pointed bell tower situated just before the semicircle sidewalk leading to the upper-level entrance of the Rossiya hotel was once attached to the redbrick Znamensky Sobor on the other side of the sidewalk; with its foundation on the slope below, it is set back from the street. At No. 10 is the Palaty Romanovych v Zaryadye , believed to be the birthplace of Tsar Mikhail Romanov. Before leaving Varvarka ulitsa take note of the last church, the blue Tserkov Georgiya na Pskovskoy Gorke at No. 12.

If you stand to the left of the church (on the walkway leading to the Rossiya hotel) you can glimpse a remnant of Kitai Gorod's 16th-century brick fortification wall. It is to your left, opposite the hotel's eastern facade. Cross to the other side of Varvarka ulitsa and walk a short hop past the final church. Make a right and climb up the narrow Ipatevsky pereulok, which leads to several government and administrative buildings. At the top of the incline to the right is one of Moscow's best-preserved 17th-century churches, the Tserkov Troitsy v Nikitnikach .

Continue down the lane to the right of the church to reach Novaya Ploshchad, or New Square, which is more like a boulevard than a square. To your right, at the far bottom of the hill, Slavyanskaya Ploshchad opens up. At the bottom of the hill is the redbrick Tserkov Vsekh Svyatykh na Kulishkakh . From Novaya Ploshchad stroll for a long block or two past the government buildings, where the Central Committee of the Communist Party once sat. Now these buildings house the Duma of the Moscow Region. Soon you will come to the beginning of a busy intersection. To your right, in the median strip that divides Novaya Ploshchad, is a park that holds the Plevna Memorial, an octagonal, towerlike monument commemorating the Russian soldiers who fell in the Battle of Plevna in the Russo-Turkish War (1878). Keep walking up the street on the left side to go to the Muzey Istorii Goroda Moskvy , a small museum on Moscow's history.

Note the building on the opposite side of the street that takes up the entire block. This is the Politekhnichesky Muzey , a museum of science and technology. Directly north of this museum is yet another museum, Muzey Mayakovskovo , which includes a re-creation of the study of the great revolutionary poet. A short distance from here, Novaya Ploshchad intersects with the circular Lubyanskaya Ploshchad , where you can behold the Lubyanka Prison and the former KGB headquarters, which now house the FSB -- the New Russia's federal security service. On the west side of the square is Detsky Mir, a large department store that used to specialize in toys but now carries all sorts of items.

Walk past Lubyanskaya Ploshchad to the west side, down to where it converges with the broad street of Teatralny proyezd, Moscow's most elite shopping street. On a side street to your right stands the ornate and luxurious Savoy hotel (3 Rozhdestvenka ulitsa), which, like the nearby Metropol hotel, was built in connection with the celebrations in the early 20th century honoring 300 years of the Romanov dynasty. On the left-hand side of the street you will pass a statue of Ivan Fyodorov, the printer who produced Russia's first book at the old Printing Yard on Nikolskaya ulitsa. The arched gateway just to the right of the statue links Teatralny proyezd with Nikolskaya ulitsa, the street on which you started the tour. Teatralny proyezd leads into Teatralnaya Ploshchad, site of three of Moscow's most important theaters.

Taking up the block on the southeast corner, the first building you will encounter to your left as you approach Teatralnaya Ploshchad is the Metropol , an art nouveau hotel. Reaching the square, you will see at the center a large monument to Karl Marx, carved on the spot from a 200-ton block of granite and unveiled in 1961. Across the boulevard stands the Bolshoi Theater , flanked on the left, on the corner farthest away from you, by the Central Children's Theater, and, to the right, by the Maly Theater . Turn left at the corner of the Metropol, and walk by the park and the hotel's main entrance. The large redbrick wall ahead is the other surviving remnant of the 16th-century fortification wall that once surrounded Kitai Gorod.

The wall has been heavily rebuilt, and a new tower has been added. Inside the tower are a couple of restaurants and bars. When you reach the Teatralnaya/Ploshchad Revolutsii metro station, take a moment to admire the exterior of the massive redbrick building on the corner -- the Muzey V. I. Lenina . If you still have some time but not much energy, consider hopping on Trolleybus 2, which can be caught at the bus stop opposite the Bolshoi Theater. The trolley ride takes about 45 minutes and makes a loop passing by Lubyanskaya Ploshchad, Ploshchad Pobedi (Victory Square -- note the obelisk topped by an angel), the Borodino Battle Panorama (in a circular blue pavilion), Kievsky vokzal (train station), the Novy Arbat, and Alexander Garden, before returning to Teatralnaya Ploshchad. You can purchase a ticket for 10R from the driver. Try to have exact change. Make sure to punch the ticket on board the bus.

Taken at a leisurely pace, with stops at least to glance at the interiors of the many churches along the route, this walk should take about five hours. If you intend to take a quick look at the exhibits in the museums along the way, you'll need an entire day. Both the Politekhnichesky Muzey and the Muzey Istorii Goroda Moskvy are worth coming back to for a more leisurely look at their holdings.

Walking Tours: Little Germany and the 48ers: An East Village Walking Tour

As the Ottendorfer Library celebrates its 140 th anniversary this December, we will celebrate the German heritage of the East Village that brought it to fruition. When the revolutions of 1848 throughout Europe failed, a number of young German-speaking revolutionaries fled to the East Village, which became the largest German-language speaking community in the world after Berlin and Vienna. With the freedoms of the New World, Little Germany or Kleindeutschland as it became known was a crucible for their energies and talents. On this tour, we will walk to places where Europe’s failed revolutionaries made their mark and consider their legacy. Bring your walking shoes and a friend! The tour will last approximately one hour and thirty minutes and cover just over a mile. It will end at Tompkins Square Park. Please check in at the front desk at least 15 minutes before the walk is scheduled to begin. This event will be rescheduled in the case of rain.

Tour Leader:

Thomas Enderle was born in Japan to German parents. Trained as a lawyer, he worked for three decades in Hamburg, Germany, as a director and board member of an international company. He is thrilled to now be living in what was once known as Kleindeutschland.
