The ESP BAS light is a trouble indicator light that indicates that there is an issue with your Dodge Journey’s Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and/or your Brake Assist Program (BAS).  These systems are important to the safety of your Journey.  Fixing them should be a top priority.  We cover how to diagnose the ESP BAS light and the common causes below.

ESP BAS Light Causes:  Dodge Journey

Just like with any other major vehicle problem, you’re going to want to get a reading of your Journey’s diagnostic trouble codes.  You can use a good code scanner, or you can take it to the local parts store and see if they will scan it for you.  Most of them are happy to do so.

You’ll want a scanner that can read the codes from your wheel speed sensors, ABS, and chassis.  If you do opt to purchase a code scanner, just be aware that the cheaper ones only read the engine codes.  That’s fine most of the time, but the problem causing the ESP BAS light is not going to be engine related.

Once you get the codes, it’ll narrow down what you need to repair.  Here are the most common causes of the ESP BAS light coming on:

Steering Angle Sensor

The steering angle sensor is one of, if not the most, common causes of the ESP BAS light to come on.  As mentioned above, make sure to turn the steering wheel twice to the right, twice to the left, and finally back to the center.  This resets the steering angle sensor in your Journey.

Wheel Speed Sensor

The ESP and BAS systems measure the speed of all four of your Journey’s wheels.  When the wheel speeds are no longer equal, they will apply corrective measures to make sure that you stay in control of the vehicle.  These are easy to replace, and have their own diagnostic codes, that’s why a scanner is so important.

Brake Switch

Something as simple as the brake switch is known to cause the ESP BAS light to come on.  Replacing it is simple and cheap.

Is it Safe to Drive with Your Journey’s ESP BAS Light on?

Is driving with the ESP BAS light on going to leave you stranded on the side of the road?  No it is not.  Is it safe?  It’s not as safe.  It’s like driving a vehicle from the 70’s that doesn’t have traction control or ABS.  You don’t always need these systems, but when you do they can save your life and keep you from crashing.

• The ESP BAS light is letting you know that vital safety equipment in your Journey is not working.

Your car’s dashboard is filled with warning lights that tell you when something is wrong. So, what does it mean when the ESP BAS Light comes on? While it might not be as recognizable as the Check Engine Light or ABS Light, you don’t ever want to ignore this alert.

My guide shows you the function of the ESP BAS Light and reveals the top causes. We also look at how to fix the fault, so you can travel without any warning lights on the dashboard. 

What Does The ESP BAS Light Mean?

The ESP BAS Light indicates a problem with the electronic stability program or brake assist program with your vehicle. Some of the top causes for this light include defective wheel speed sensors, a bad steering angle sensor, a bad brake switch, or other braking system failures. 

The light comes on for a variety of problems, ranging from mild to serious. However, the codes can be read with the help of a handheld code scanner that’s compatible with these systems. 

ESP BAS Light Causes

1. defective steering angle sensor.

Modern vehicles contain advanced sensors, including one for the steering angle. Sadly, this sensor also leads to the majority of reasons that the ESP BAS Light comes on. 

The steering wheel sensor keeps the steering wheel in line with the car’s wheels. With the help of the sensor, the car knows which way you turn the steering wheel based on the input given by the steering angle sensor. 

The sensor can lose contact due to a poor connection, causing the ESP BAS light to show up on your dashboard. It could also mean that the sensor has failed.

2. Bad Wheel Speed Sensor

Each wheel contains a speed sensor that measures how fast the wheel is moving. These sensors are also part of the vehicle’s ESP BAS system. With the help of these sensors, the ESP BAS system can tell when traction has been lost, so it can counteract the issue.

In normal circumstances, the ESP BAS Light can come on because traction has been lost momentarily. However, as soon as the situation is resolved, the light should go off on its own. If it doesn’t, there’s a chance that one of the wheel speed sensors is bad.

3. Failed Brake Switch

The brake switch can also cause the light to come on. Even though this part is supposed to last forever, there’s always the chance that it has failed. 

The switch turns on the rear brake lights when you push down on the pedal. If it isn’t working, people behind you might not know that you are stopping or slowing down. That’s why the failed switch must be replaced as soon as you are aware of the defect.

4. Wiring Issues

There are a lot of wires going between all the different sensors and the ABS control module . The wirings to the ABS wheel speed sensors are attached to the wheels, and sometimes they get damaged.

This is not very common in newer car models, as the wirings are often very protected, but it can still happen if you are unlucky. The bad thing about wiring issues is that they can be very difficult to find if you are not experienced.

How To Fix The ESP BAS Light?

The easiest way to determine what is causing the ESP BAS light is to read the trouble codes with an OBD2 scanner from the ABS control module in your car. This will help you locate the issue or start troubleshooting instead of just guessing and replacing parts.

Here are some other common things that can fix the ESP Bas warning light:

1. Recalibrate Steering Angle Sensor

Sometimes, the steering angle sensor just needs to be recalibrated. You can do this in your driveway without any special tools.

Sit behind the wheel of your car and gently turn the wheel from one side to another, where it would lock. You might also need to cycle the key for the calibration to take effect. 

In some cases, an OBDII scanner can recalibrate the steering angle sensor. Read the codes and recalibrate as needed. 

2. Replace Steering Angle Sensor

If the calibration doesn’t fix the problem, you might need to replace the sensor. Thankfully, this job is usually simple and only requires the use of a socket and ratchet.

Make sure you unplug the battery first. You must then remove the airbag from the steering wheel by pushing on the clip located on the rear of the wheel. Lock the steering wheel in the center and use your socket and ratchet to remove the main nut.

Mark the wheel’s position, so you know where the center is. After you remove the clock spring , you will see the sensor. Take it out and put the new one back in. Connect everything back up and turn on the vehicle. You will also need to recalibrate the system for the light to turn off. 

3. Replace Wheel Speed Sensor

Behind each set of braking discs, you can find the wheel speed sensor. Because of how easy it is to access, it’s relatively simple to replace a defective sensor, but sometimes it can get stuck by rust.

Jack up the vehicle and remove the affected wheel. When you take off the sensor, you can pop the new one in its place with ease. 

4. Install New Brake Switch Sensor

With your OBDII code scanner, you can hunt down the problems with the brake switch sensor. Unlike some of the other sensors, this one is inexpensive. 

You will find it located above the brake pedal. Simply unplug the defective sensor and put the new one in. You might also need to reset any codes that were set to turn the light off. 

5. Repair Brakes

If it’s time for a brake job, get it done and see if it turns the light off. Put the car up on jack stands and take the wheels off. When you unbolt the brake caliper , make sure you rest it somewhere, so none of the lines break.

From here, you can remove the rotor and replace it if needed. You might prefer to have it resurfaced if there is still plenty of material available. Additionally, it’s not hard to replace the brake pads. 

The problem comes in when the caliper is stuck. Unless you have advanced brake system expertise, you might need to have a professional help out.

Your Bas & Esp Light is on due to a failing or already failed Bas sensor & Esp Sensor, You can either do it yourself which can be very tricky if you are not confident with automobile repairs. The dealer should be able to do this at a reasonable price as it should take around an hour to do the repairs. If the problem keeps arising there could be a problem elsewhere that is connected to the same area & is shorting out. I hope this helps.

Hi, these systems are all linked together. Most commonly, one of the wheel speed sensors is not reading or is reading incorrectly. This can also occur on slippery surfaces where one or more wheel slides enough to cause the sensor to drop the signal, but not enough to meet criteria for an abs or esp episode. If the light comes back every time you turn on the ignition, there is a deeper problem. The system has detected a fault in the electronic stability program - brake assist system. You have an electrical connection at the rear wheels secured to the inside of the brake area and are viewable from under the vehicle. It is a small wire harness running to each wheel. Grab the connector and wiggle it around, and make sure they are tight. Due to the connector being mounted low to the ground, sometimes they become dirty or corroded, not making contact. Do this on both sides and see if the lights turn off. If the light does not turn off, you have to replace dynamics sensor, which is mounted UNDERNEATH the center console in the car. There is a "lost communication to dynamics sensor" and "low voltage to dynamics sensor supply"..

Electronic Stability Program (ESP), or Electronic Stability Control (ESC) in some cars, is a system that keeps your vehicle stable while driving. The ESP system uses a sensor to detect when your car is losing traction or starting to skid and then restores its stability. The Brake Assist System (BAS) is designed to increase the brake pressure when it senses a sudden slam on the brake pedal. 

The ESP BAS light indicates a problem with your car’s brake assist program or electronic stability system.

If the ESP BAS are inactive, your car might lose traction when cornering or driving on the snow. You must resolve the issue as soon as possible to keep you and your vehicle safe. 

Your ESP BAS system should always function well because you never know when you might need it. Once you notice the light, park immediately or drive to a safe spot and troubleshoot it.

Why Does the ESP BAS Light Come On?

Here are some reasons your ESP BAS light comes on and how to quickly resolve it:

These sensors let the car know in which direction you turn the wheels. A bad connection can cause these sensors to lose contact, resulting in the illumination of the ESP BAS light.

A malfunctioning or failed sensor can send wrong information to the wheels, causing the vehicle to turn wrong.

Solution : Recalibrating the steering angle sensor can resolve this issue. Fortunately, you do not need special tools to do this; you can do it in your driveway. Gently turn your car’s wheels from right to left or left to right (where it would lock).

You can also use an OBD2 scanner to recalibrate your car’s steering angle sensor. Read the trouble code on the scanner and fix it. If recalibrating it does not work, replace it.

The system cannot detect loss of tract in the wheels when the speed sensors are faulty, which can trigger the light.

Solution:  Find and replace the bad wheel speed sensor.

Whenever the brake switch fails, it will alert you to replace it by turning on the ESP BAS light.

Solution:  Use an OBD2 scanner to scan for the trouble code and identify the issue. Remove and replace the faulty brake switch sensor.

The ABS control module and various sensors in a car are connected with many wires.

If there is an issue with the wiring, it might transmit the wrong information to the ABS module, which sends a signal to the ESP BAS system, causing the light to pop up.

Solution:  Wirings are complex and challenging to debug. Contact a professional auto-electrician to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

Solution:  Find the faulty braking component and replace it immediately.

How to Reset the ESP BAS Light

Here is a step-by-step guide for resetting the ESP BAS light:

Step 1: Press ESP OFF button

Press the ESP OFF button to turn the light off. If it doesn’t work or your car doesn’t have this button, move to the next step.

Step 2: Reset the steering angle sensor

• Start your car’s engine and turn the wheel to the right as far as possible and then to the left.
• Repeat the process about two to three times to reset the sensor.
• Return the steering wheel to the middle position.

Step 3: Read the trouble codes by using the OBD2 scanner

For this step, you would need one of the Best OBD2 Scanners on the market today. Connect the scanner to your car, turn on the ignition, and hit the “Read” button to start the scanner.

Let me tell you about my experience with the ESP BAS light. After seeing this warning signal, I used the Autel MK808 OBD2 scanner to scan my 2010 Jeep Wrangler. 

The scanner showed the code “C1020”, meaning Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit. The warning light went off when I replaced the faulty sensor.

Step 4: Fix the problem

Once you get the trouble code, it will show you what you need to replace or repair. If you need help with how to replace or repair parts, allow an expert to handle them. 

Step 5: Clear the trouble codes

Once you fix the problem, the next step is to clear the error code. Press the “Erase” button to remove the codes and turn off the ignition. Test drive the car to see if the light still comes on.

Wheel Speed sensor scan with a newer ODBII and it will tell you which of the 4 sensors on the car is bad...  

You will need to get the car scanned with a good ODBII Scanner to find out which Wheel Sensor is needing replacing each wheel has one btw a good scanner will tell you which one has went out. Mine did that last year what you showed photos of is not the issue.  

i change the four wheel sensor but the still same

My ESP/BAS light stays on, with the traction control warning after I start my Journey. The traction control can be turned off by pressing 2 times the ESP off button. But the other light remains on. Wonder why??

• 1 year later...

Check so u dont have and prb with the HUBs or any ABS sensors prb. The gearbox u have in ur car is manufatured in Germany ( Porche getrag ) 6 speed dubble clutch. I had some prb with a JC with the same prb and it was the HUB right front that was broken.

ESP BAS warning light

Howdy all. my first post. Unfortunatly it came due to a problem with my car... I've recently started getting a ESP/BAS warning light. No other warnings and no apparent change in drivability. It started intermittantly. I was able to clear it with the steering wheel(lock to lock) trick. Then it would come back during the next drive. Now it clears shortly after I start it then comes on right away and stays. I found no error codes with either the acc/on trick or with my predator. I also loaded my original tune just in case this would help...it didn't. I inspected the connectors in the wheel wells and they seem fine(I didn't disconnect or reconnect anything) I do have the Eibach pro springs front and back put on by the dealer. That was several hundred miles ago. Related? I have appoint with dealer in couple days....I cringe every time I think i may have to leave my baby with them...So I was wondering what other things I can do to try and correct this. Assuming it's really not a sensor of course. mods(predator 93CAI tune, 180deg,Eibach pro springs, catch can) thx.

It sounds like you may have a bad wheel sensor. If that's the case, your brakes could lock while driving it. Get it to the dealer to check out. BTW, please check into our newbie section.  

Thx for reply. I've checked into the newbie section. Also, I still have stock srt8 rims and tires after lowering the car. One additional note on my problem. I also found that the Lateral Accelerometer(g-force) is not working. I suppose if there is a seperate module that contains this it could also be faulty causing the warning light since this information is probably used also to determine if the car is in a turn/slide?  

UPDATE: took car into dealer this morning..cringe!....after having it all day and probably only actually looking at the car for a couple hours. Service consultant called and said i have a bad "dynamic sensor". Not sure if this is a specific component or what. It's on order and hopfully installed by Friday. I guess when they did some test drives with the car it actually initiated the ABS system while driving normally for them. Guess that's good and better than a "could not duplicate". I'll let you know if this really fixes it.

Synchronizing ESP The Malfunction Indicator Light for the ESP is combined with BAS indicator. If the power supply is interrupted (battery disconnected or discharged), the ESP/BAS Malfunction Indicator Light may illuminate with the engine running. If this should occur, turn the steering wheel completely to the left and then to the right. The ESP/BAS Malfunction Indicator Light should go out. However, if the light remains on, have the ESP and BAS checked at your authorized dealer as soon as possible. ​  

I have a 2009 RT 53,300 miles. Dealer replaced the SAS but light came back on as soon as I made a left turn. Took it back and the dealer said that they had not recalibrated the sensor. Took it home a second time and made it all of the way home (15 miles) and light came back on making a left turn into the driveway. Light was on next morning but went off after getting going. Came back on at the first hard left turn. This is the only problem I have had with this car. It apparently was good for 53,000 miles. Got any Ideas?

Just wanted to add another detail to my original post/issue with this indicator light. I posted that the "dynamic sensor" fixed my issue. This sensor is what provides feedback to the computer that your car may be in a lateral slide. On my SRT. not sure about the RTs or other models. In the performace menu it provides my "g" force feed back in forward and side to side movement. We'll before they replaced the dynamic sensor i had noticed that I was not getting any side to side "g" force data. after the repacement the indicator light never came back on and i was now getting this "g" force data. If your car has this feedback may be something to check. Your issue sounds different than mine. Mine came on as soon as I started the car. It was not related to a specific action I was doing like turning hard left. good luck.  

Thanks, guys. The lock to lock steering thing isn't working. I have an appt. to take it back to the dealers next tuesday evening. They have been really concerned about getting this fixed and the service manager seems a little frustrated. I will forward all of your suggestions. Thanks, again.  

think about this... I have the exact same problem, left turn signal engaged, make the left turn, signal lever recovers and the esp/bas light comes on...I have 85,000 miles on my R/T, this started at 37,000 miles. When you shut off the car, restart it and begin to drive the esp/bas light shuts off and stays off until you begin the left turn process again. Took mine to the dealer the next day...2 yrs ago...and they said don't worry about it...I later had them do a diagnostic test, for $100.00, and they determined that the cause was a "steering angle sensor", $50.00 part with a $550.00 repair estimate, not covered under the basic warranty . Now I use my turn signal and manually return the signal lever on left turns prior to completion of the turn. This is probably a hillbilly fix but the light doesn't come on and I'm not paying the dealer $550.00 bucks just to feel both hands on my shoulders from behind and seeing a grin on his face. No other faults or complaints with this car. Hope this helps...Peace, Uncle Rob  

The lock to lock steering fix is working, somewhat. Turn to lock left then right, turn off engine and restart and the light goes out except as follows; This is exactly the problem. Left turn without turn indicator doesn't seem to turn light on. Steering angle sensor was the first repair the dealer did. However, in my case the part was $41.50 + or - and the labor was $125.00. The first time I took it back to the dealer he said that it was the SAS calibration and didn't charge me anything. I have it scheduled to return on Wednesday. This is beginning to sound like the clock spring in the steering column. Earlier in this string someone had responded that replacing the clock spring solved the problem. Thanks very much for your response, Rob. Sorry this cost you so much with no satisfaction. Maybe your fix is the one I'll end up with.  

Sorry if this reply shows twice. Had a computer glitch. The lock to lock steering trick is working...sort of. Turn left to lock then right to lock and turn engine off. Start engine and the light goes off. This lasts until I make a left turn with the signal light. As soon as the signal return clicks back the light comes on exactly like Uncle Rob's. No signal ...no ESP/BAS light. Light stays out until I forget and use the signal! The first time it went back to the dealer the total repair bill was $165.00 + or -. The second time the dealer said that the SAS needed to be calibrated and didn't charge me anything. It goes back again on Wednesday. The problem is beginning to sound more and more like the clock spring. Sorry this cost you so much without satisfaction, Rob. I will try your hillbilly fix this afternoon. Thanks for your reply. I'll let everyone know what the dealer does this time.  

Dealer called and said that the originally replaced SAS was defective. There is a "tab" which was missing. He didn't know if it was like that out of the box or if the mechanic broke it during the original installation. He said that he had the mechanic check tolerances of all related parts as suggested by a Chrysler Corp. engineering bulletin. Found all parts in tolerance. The replacement SAS is being installed now. This dealer has been really friendly, cooperative, concerned, helpful, and has not charged me a cent other than the original $165.00 + or -. I don't know if we are allowed to give reps. to a dealer but this is Barreth Chrysler in Washington, MO.

To calibrate, perform the following: 1) Start the engine. 2) Center the steering wheel. 3) Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left until the internal stop in the steering gear is met, then turn the wheel all the way to the right until the opposite internal stop in the steering gear is met. 4) Center the steering wheel. 5) Stop the engine. I had a similar problem. Do you know what codes are coming up? I had a wheel speed sensor go bad. I didn't know which one it was so I replaced all four of them for less than $100 from wholesalemopar.com.

Was haveing all lights come on abs esp squiggly lines Ended up being the metal connectors that are inside the wiring harness connector that plugs into the abs module took me forever to fix never did find the right part no. Pulled some off a Chrysler car that was a 2002 something and pulled out the metal connectors with enough wire to splice and put back in the old connector. It was also the plug for the abs. Pushed it in after replacing all the connectors and it worked. Cost me 30 bucks at the junk yard. Hope this helps took me 3 months to figure out lol  

I am having the same issue STILL 2008 Charger SE Hello! This is my second time here and i've been reading and trying these suggestions and have gotten nothing but the damn ESP BAS light back on with the 'no traction control' car slipping logo under it. I can clear the car but not the ESP BAS. Here's what i have done so far: 4/14/16: Took my Charger to a known mechanic where my car has been before for any service. The mechanic replaced the sensor and showed me the old one and told me the light shouldn't come on. Took my car that night to a friends house and after leaving him off for a little, i come back out to start it and light it on again. Morning after that incident: i turned the wheel like it claimed being the problem from the person on this form and i even saw the same process on other Googled searches for the same thing. Light was STILL ON! Does anyone else have any other solutions? This light seems to come on every winter during the time i have the snow tires on my car. We switched the wheels to regular tires the same day as the sensor was replaced.

I have the same problem.. ESP indicator is always on.. I tried turning steering wheel fully to the left and right then to zero while engine is on then off for a while and drove it for a short distance then it got off. But once I turned the steering wheel to the left it was on again.. Will you plz tell me whats going on?  

Plug a scanner into the car's OBD2 port and see if any codes have been logged. Use a scanner that can read all codes (not just Pxxxx powertrain codes) because many of the controllers in the car (e.g. ABS) post Bxxxx body codes, Uxxxx communication codes or Cxxxx chassis codes. .
