These New Luxury Blimps Hope to Become the Superyachts of the Skies

Airliner 10

Less than a century ago, the airship was the symbol of elegant travel, gliding silently across the skies. The explosion of the Hindenburg changed the fate of airships in an instant, giving them the reputation of floating bombs.

A number of companies in the U.S. and Europe are trying to stage a comeback for these floating giants, marketing them not only as an antidote to loud, emissions-spewing jets, but also as a much more civilized way to travel.

The Airship 2.0 is certainly a different beast from the zeppelin of 100 years ago. The latest generation relies on non-combustible helium, and bulletproof materials that like vectran, mylar and kevlar to make the balloon both lightweight and durable.

Airliner

The Airlander 10, which is ready for production, promises a much more civilized way to travel by air than jets.  Hybrid Air Vehicles

Companies like Flying Whale in France and U.S.-based Skunk Works, the research arm of Lockheed Martin, are designing airships to carry cargo and medical supplies to remote locations around the world. Skunk Works says its airships could be used as passenger carriers if buyers want to modify them after purchasing the design.

California-based Aeroscraft has a 220-ft. airship in production that uses solar power for propulsion. The company says it can be used for jaunts, such as trips between Hawaiian islands. Aeroscraft forecasts that it will be another three to five years before its airship receives FAA certification for passenger travel.

The company has also been working on concepts like the Neona, a futuristic, donut-shaped flying saucer. More UFO than floating superyacht , the company did not give a timeline for when Neona might go into production.

Neon

California-based Aeroscraft makes a traditional-looking airship, but is also working on the flying-saucer-shaped Neona as a personal sky yacht.  Aeroscraft

A U.K. company is leading the charge for creating airships that will undertake passenger journeys, much like a cruise ship or yacht. Hybrid Air Vehicles said its floating goliaths will offer private passenger travel beginning in 2024. These full-featured airships will have lounges, master suites, offices and spas. The company says it will also offer sushi counters or in-room refrigerators for long-distance cruises.

HAV has launched a full-scale prototype of its Airlander 10 and has a much larger airship, the Airlander 60, for transporting cargo. The Airlander 10 has a base price of $50 million, while models with full specs cost an additional $10 to $20 million. The company says it has 15 letters of intent for the airships, though it has yet to sign any private individuals. Luxury travel groups plan to use them for safaris, hopping from one camp to the next, or another operator wants to fly the airships from Svalbard, Norway, and land near the North Pole.

Since  airships   don’t need runways, they are perfect for out-of-the-way destinations or hopping between private islands. These levitating leviathans can reach 300 feet in length, with cabin space of about 150 feet. They’re much slower than airplanes, though they still cruise at about 80 mph.

Flying Whale

Flying Whale plans to use its airships to ferry cargo and medical supplies into remote regions.  Flying Whale

“Our ability to operate without runways means that we can fly point-to-point,” company spokesperson Rebecca Zeitlin told Robb Report . “That means that someone with an estate outside London and a chateau in the French countryside can make a much more direct journey than London to Paris.”

The  airships   are delivered with helium and are topped up every year as part of the regular maintenance schedule. “They’re rather like a superyacht, with the same level of luxury inside,” says Zeitlin .  “We like to think of it as a fast yacht rather than a slow aircraft .”

The graf zeppelin, hindenburg, u.s. navy airships, and other dirigibles, zeppelin nt.

The Zeppelin NT is a 75.1 m (246 ft)  semi-rigid airship inflated with helium . NT stands for Neue Technologie, or “New Technology” in English.

The ship made its first flight on September 18, 1997, and when configured for sightseeing and tourism it can accommodate up to 12-14 passengers and two pilots.

The famed Goodyear Blimps  are now being replaced with Zeppelin NT airships.

The framework consists of 12 vertical triangular carbon-fiber crossbeams, connected to three longitudinal girders of welded aluminum, with aramid cables bracing the structure and giving it additional rigidity.

All the ship’s major components — cabin, engines, and tail assembly — are mounted on the rigid structure to provide safe and stable flight performance, and also a quiet and comfortable ride for the passengers.

Lifting Gas and Envelope

Zeppelin NT’s basic variant (N07-100) has an envelope volume of 8,450 cubic meters (298,409   cubic feet) according to its European Aviation Safety Agency Type Certificate. The envelope itself is a high-strength multilayer laminate.

Similar to a blimp, the Zeppelin NT uses ballonets of air to maintain a constant interior pressure and a taut envelope at all flight altitudes.

Engines and Propellers

The Zeppelin NT is driven by three gasoline-powered, 4-cylinder, 197 hp Textron-Lycoming IO-360-C1G6 piston engines. The Lycoming IO-360 has proven its reliability in decades of use in small aircraft.

The ship’s three engines power four propellers; three vectored thrust (swiveling) Hoffmann 2.7 m three-bladed propellers, and one lateral thrust Hoffmann 2.2 m three-bladed propeller.

The aft engine drives a pushing propeller that can be turned 90° downward if needed, and a  steering propeller  that can directed from side-to-side to function like the bow thruster of a ship. The two side propellers generally provide forward thrust but can swivel through 120 degrees.

The ship’s  vectored thrust propellers allow the  Zeppelin NT to perform vertical take-offs, stable hovering, and even backward flight.

The ship has a maximum speed of about 125 km/h or 78 mph (VNE is 130 km/h) but usually cruises at about half that speed when used for sightseeing and tourism.

From its groundbreaking circumnavigation of the globe to its role in establishing the first transatlantic passenger air service, the Graf Zeppelin's story is one of triumph, innovation, and ultimately, the bittersweet end of an era.

THE GRAF ZEPPELIN WAS NAMED AFTER FERDINAND VON ZEPPELIN

portrait of Ferdinand von Zeppelin

Graf Zeppelin, a monumental airship that dominated the skies in the early 20th century, was aptly named after the visionary German airship pioneer, Ferdinand von Zeppelin, whose groundbreaking designs revolutionized the field of aviation.

The airship's conception and operation were masterfully orchestrated by Hugo Eckener, the esteemed chairman of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, a company dedicated to the construction and advancement of these colossal dirigibles.

Eckener's unwavering commitment to the project, coupled with his exceptional leadership skills, ensured that the Graf Zeppelin would come to fruition.

OVER ITS CAREER, GRAF ZEPPELIN MADE 590 FLIGHTS (1 MILLION MILES)

the Graf Zeppelin in Berlin

Graf Zeppelin, an awe-inspiring marvel of engineering, embarked on an illustrious career that spanned 590 flights, covering an astonishing distance of nearly 1.7 million kilometers (over 1 million miles).

This unparalleled achievement solidified its place in hot air balloon and aviation history, as it became the first aircraft ever to surpass the monumental milestone of flying over a million miles.

THE AIRSHIP WAS THE LONGEST & LARGEST AIRSHIP IN THE WORLD WHEN BUILT

the Graf Zeppelin

The Graf Zeppelin, a behemoth of the skies, required the expertise and dedication of a crew of 36 individuals to maintain its smooth operation, while also accommodating up to 24 passengers in its spacious cabins.

At the time of its construction, the Graf Zeppelin held the prestigious title of being the longest and largest airship in the world.

The airship's impressive size and passenger capacity not only symbolized the grandeur of the era but also foreshadowed the future of luxury air travel.

THE GRAF ZEPPELIN MADE THE FIRST CIRCUMNAVIGATION OF THE WORLD BY AIRSHIP IN 1929

the Graf Zeppelin over the Pacific Ocean

Graf Zeppelin etched its name in aviation history when it completed the first circumnavigation of the world by an airship in 1929, a momentous journey that spanned an incredible 21 days.

This unprecedented feat showcased the airship's remarkable endurance and reliability, as it traversed vast oceans and continents, capturing the imagination of people worldwide.

Not content with this singular achievement, Graf Zeppelin further pushed the boundaries of aerial exploration by accomplishing the first nonstop flight across the Pacific Ocean.

THE AIRSHIP USED BLAU GAS & HYDROGEN AS A FUEL

hydrogen gas

The Graf Zeppelin's innovative use of Blau gas, a gaseous fuel derived from coal, in addition to the conventional hydrogen, proved to be a game-changer in terms of the airship's operational capabilities.

This clever combination of fuels granted the Graf Zeppelin an unprecedented advantage, significantly extending its range and endurance compared to airships that relied solely on hydrogen.

The implementation of Blau gas showcased the forward-thinking approach of the airship's designers.

FUNDING FOR THE CONSTRUCTION CAME FROM PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTIONS & THE GERMAN GOVERNMENT

contruction of the Graf Zeppelin

The construction of the Graf Zeppelin was made possible through a combination of public subscriptions and support from the German government, showcasing the widespread enthusiasm and belief in the potential of this groundbreaking airship.

To offset the substantial operating costs, the Graf Zeppelin's management employed innovative strategies, such as the sale of special postage stamps to eager collectors, which not only generated revenue but also fostered a sense of public engagement and pride in the airship's achievements.

The project also garnered the support of influential figures like William Randolph Hearst, whose backing further bolstered the airship's financial stability.

FROM 1928 TO 1937, THE GRAF ZEPPELIN MADE MANY PIONEERING LONG-DISTANCE FLIGHTS

the graf zeppelin flying over the Artic

From 1928 to 1937, the Graf Zeppelin embarked on a series of groundbreaking long-distance flights that pushed the boundaries of aerial exploration and opened up new frontiers for commercial air travel.

These pioneering journeys included thrilling expeditions to the frigid landscapes of the Arctic and the exotic destinations of the Middle East.

Capturing the imagination of people around the world and showcasing the airship's unparalleled capabilities in conquering vast distances and navigating diverse climates.

Perhaps the Graf Zeppelin's most significant contribution to the advancement of air travel was its establishment of the first commercial passenger air service between Germany and Brazil.

A remarkable feat that spanned five years and demonstrated the viability of long-distance air transportation.

THE NAZI PARTY USED THE GRAF ZEPPELIN FOR PROPAGANDA PURPOSES

Nazi propaganda poster of the Graf Zeppelin

The rise of the Nazi Party in Germany in 1933 marked a significant shift in the Graf Zeppelin's role, as the iconic airship was increasingly utilized for propaganda purposes by the new regime.

One particularly notable instance of this was when the Graf Zeppelin flew in tandem with the equally impressive Hindenburg airship, creating a awe-inspiring spectacle in the skies above Germany just before a crucial national election.

This carefully orchestrated display was designed to evoke a sense of national pride and unity, showcasing the technological prowess and superiority of the German nation under Nazi leadership.

The sight of these two colossal airships, symbols of German engineering and innovation, flying side by side served as a powerful visual metaphor for the strength and ambition of the Third Reich, effectively captivating the public imagination and garnering support for the Nazi Party's political agenda.

THE GRAF ZEPPELIN HAD AN ALMOST PERFECT SAFETY RECORD

the Graf Zeppelin

The Graf Zeppelin's impeccable safety record stands as a testament to the skill, dedication, and meticulous attention to detail of its designers, engineers, and crew.

Throughout its illustrious career, the airship flew an astonishing 1.7 million kilometers, a distance that would take one around the Earth more than 42 times, while safely carrying over 13,000 passengers without a single injury.

This remarkable achievement was unheard of in an era when air travel was still in its infancy and the risks associated with flying were considerably higher than they are today.

THE AIRSHIP WAS RETIRED ONE MONTH AFTER THE HINDENBURG DISASTER IN 1937

the Hindenburg disaster

The Graf Zeppelin's illustrious career came to an abrupt end just one month after the tragic Hindenburg disaster in 1937, which cast a dark shadow over the future of airship travel and led to a widespread loss of confidence in the technology.

Despite its own impeccable safety record, the Graf Zeppelin was ultimately unable to escape the fallout from the Hindenburg incident, and the decision was made to retire the airship from active service.

The once-majestic airship met a rather ignominious fate in 1940 when, on the orders of Hermann Göring, a prominent figure in the Nazi regime, it was dismantled so that its precious metal components could be repurposed for the construction of aircraft.

This decision, driven by the pressing needs of the German war machine, marked a sad and unceremonious end to the Graf Zeppelin's story, as the airship that had once conquered the skies and captured the hearts and minds of people around the world was reduced to scrap metal in service of the Nazi war effort.

Simple Flying

Before aircraft - how zeppelins crossed the atlantic.

Lighter than air with sleek curves and a shimmering silver appearance, the German-built Zeppelin was the fastest way to travel between the United States and Europe between 1936 and 1937.

A hundred years earlier, a Brunel designed steamship had made the Atlantic crossing in 15 days. As advances in motor-powered ships improved, that time reduced, to the point that the Queen Mary could make the crossing in five days. However, it was still much slower than traveling by Zeppelin.

The Hindenburg crossed the Atlantic in less than two days

The LZ-129 Hindenburg Zeppelin dazzled the world of transoceanic travel when it made the crossing to Europe in just 43 hours, leading its owners to print brochures and posters boasting “Two Days to Europe.” In contrast to traveling by ocean liners, no passenger aboard the Hindenburg ever complained of being seasick. Renowned American writer and humourist Mark Twain once said when talking about seasickness:

“At first you are so sick you are afraid you will die, and then you are so sick you are afraid you won’t.”

Despite its massive size and incredible luxury, the Queen Mary was no match for ocean storms that passengers said could “roll the milk out of tea.”

When describing the glory of traveling across the ocean by Zeppelin, Mary Day Winn of the New York Herald Tribune wrote :

“The real glory of Zeppelin travel … is its freedom from seasickness. It is the smoothest form of motion I have ever known, just a continuous floating, with no rolling, no dipping, and almost no change of levels. The sound of the engines can be heard only faintly – a low, steady murmur barely entering consciousness except when it slows up. There is no vibration.”

The Hindenburg was like a floating Post Office

The Zeppelin’s pivotal role was not in transporting passengers, but rather for carrying mail. So much, in fact, that they were almost floating Post Offices. Besides being much fast than boats when it came to freight, the Zeppelins came into their own when transporting perishable cargo like flowers and short-life foods.

Sadly the days of Zeppelins crossing to Europe ended on the morning of May 6, 1937, as the Hindenburg tried to dock at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey. As the Hindenburg crossed the American coast and passengers were given a sensational view of Boston, the airship continued south to New York for its traditional loop around Manhattan.

As usual, steam whistles and sirens went off all around the city as traffic came to a stop so that New Yorkers could marvel at the big silver balloon in the sky. Now already late, following headwinds over the Atlantic, the Hindenburg hastily tried to tie up to its mooring mast before bursting into flames.

The Hindenburg disaster was the end of the Zeppelin

When the scorched framework of the Zeppelin finally came to rest on the ground, bystanders eagerly rushed to the aid of passengers desperate to escape from the flames.

To this day, nobody knows what caused the Hindenburg to catch fire, with many hypotheses claiming everything from static electricity to a bomb. Some even suggest that it could have been caused by a gunshot from the ground. What we do know, though, is that despite a perfect 27-year safety record, 13 passengers, 22 crew, and one person on the ground died as a result of the fire.

With World War II looming, the Zeppelin days were already numbered. Following the Hindenburg disaster, public confidence was so shattered in the airship that the era of the transatlantic Zeppelin came to an abrupt end.

Why Zeppelins Are on the Rise Again

A world in a hurry turns to a lumbering early 20th-century technology for a lesson in efficiency

April White

Author,  The Divorce Colony: How Women Revolutionized Marriage and Found Freedom on the American Frontier

Zeppelins

In the 1930s, before commercial airplanes began crossing the Atlantic, zeppelins promised to change how we traveled. They could make the voyage in just 43 hours, while the fastest ocean liner took five days. But when the Hindenburg plummeted from the New Jersey sky in 1937, killing 36 people, the disaster also ended the dream that hydrogen-filled airships would be the future of transportation.

Now scientists and others are starting to look at zeppelins as something more than hovering billboards like the Goodyear Blimp. The reason is a benefit that went unrecognized a century ago: Airships can be more fuel efficient than cargo ships and airplanes.

Most modern airships use helium, a nonflammable but expensive and rare gas. But technological advances have lessened the explosive danger associated with hydrogen, which is endlessly abundant. So the military, space agencies and others are stepping up research on hydrogen-filled airships. And cargo transport could be speedy as well as efficient. A new study in the journal Energy Conversion and Management found that an airship five times the length of the Empire State Building riding the jet stream could circle the globe in 14 days—faster than any oceangoing ship.

Exactly one year after its maiden passenger carrying flight, the Hindenburg was destroyed in a fiery inferno as it attempted to land at Lakehurst, New Jersey. 35 people onboard the airship along with one person on the ground perished in the tragedy. Amazingly, 62 of the 97 onboard survived.

The fire was blamed on a spark that caused the Zeppelin's hydrogen to ignite. Although conspiracy theories over the cause of the tragedy abound.

Leisurely Elegance: This is not a race against the clock; it's a symphony of serenity. Let the gentle hum of the engines lull you into a state of blissful relaxation. Stroll along the expansive decks, soak in the onboard jacuzzi, or indulge in a pampering treatment at the airship's spa. Time becomes a canvas on which you paint your own rhythm of pleasure.

Destinations Unlocked: Forget tourist traps and crowded beaches. Airships grant access to secluded paradises and hidden gems inaccessible to larger vessels.

Imagine touching down on a pristine glacier, exploring remote villages untouched by modernization, or witnessing the Northern Lights dance across an arctic sky. Your airship becomes your private gateway to the world's rarest treasures.

Special Touches for Discerning Tastes: Beyond the expected lavishness, airships offer unique amenities that whisper exclusivity.

Picture yourself hosting a private wine tasting in the airship's climate-controlled cellar, enjoying a sunset movie screening on the observation deck, or unwinding in a state-of-the-art entertainment lounge. Every detail is designed to surpass even the most discerning traveller's expectations.

Beyond Yachts and Jets: Compared to traditional luxury travel options, airships offer a distinct brand of indulgence. While yachts may boast speed and intimacy, they are limited by coastal routes and weather conditions.

Private jets, while offering unparalleled speed, often confine you to cramped cabins and generic airport experiences. Airships, on the other hand, marry the best of both worlds. They offer spaciousness, personalized service, and access to remote destinations while letting you savor the journey itself.

In essence, airship travel transcends mere transportation; it's an experience. It's a chance to rediscover the joy of exploration, savor the beauty of the world from a unique perspective, and indulge in unparalleled comfort and personalized service. So, are you ready to embark on a journey unlike any other? Climb aboard an airship, and prepare to redefine luxury in the clouds.

Float in a Zeppelin Where Air Travel Began: Friedrichshafen, Germany

“Float in a Zeppelin Above The City Where Air Travel Began: Friedrichshafen, South Germany”

There was no taxiing. No waiting for a slot. No engine roar. No ear-popping. There was not even a runway. Our Zeppelin simply floated up into the sky above Friedrichshafen and Lake Constance in South Germany until we reached our cruising altitude of 350 metres.

The History  The Flight The Museum The Takeway

Once, this was the only way to fly. The ultimate high life and only the very rich could afford to travel the world in the belly of the leviathan. But on a recent trip in a Zeppelin, I could not only see four countries from my elevated position, I could also feel the past and the future of air travel as I drifted with the clouds.

The History

Count Ferdinand Adolf August Heinrich von Zeppelin , a cavalry general and diplomat, born in Konstanz in 1838, first flew a Zeppelin in 1900 from pontoons moored off the Bay of Manzell on Lake Constance. This was three years before the famous Wright brothers flew their heavier-than-air plane at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Two hundred locals had to hold the aircraft down before take-off and then pull it in on landing, to anchor it.

Having first seen balloons during the Siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian War, von Zeppelin bought a design off Croatian inventor David Schwarz and patented it as “a steerable all-cruising train”.

The first lighter-than-air flight lasted eighteen minutes, before being curtailed by “technical difficulties”. The cloth-covered prototype was 128 metres long and powered by Daimler engines.

One hundred and seventeen airships or “dirigibles” eventually came off the production line. The first airships were used for surveillance and bombing raids during the World War I, and Friedrichshafen became the cradle of German industrial history.

In 1928, the hydrogen-fueled airship Graf Zeppelin carried twenty paying passengers on the first trans-Atlantic flight.

A year later, with a crew of thirty-six looking after nine passengers, Graf Zeppelin completed a deluxe 12-day, 30,831-mile world tour via New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo. It was the press baron William Randolph Hearst who organized the junket at roughly £28,000 per person. He also paid the modern equivalent  of $2 million for the media rights.

Before being retired in 1937, the Graf Zeppelin completed 590 flights, including a polar expedition and two trips to the Middle East.

zeppelin luxury travel

View from Zeppelin Over Harbour

Her successor, the ill-fated Hindenburg airship, was no less luxurious, with incomparable facilities. She became the flagship for the opulent “New Germany”.  A return ticket between Frankfurt and Lakehurst, New Jersey on the 242 ton airship, which carried seven million cubic feet of hydrogen, cost $720, with single occupancy of one of her two-berth cabins an extra $1000. Westbound flights took sixty-four hours. Eastbound, fifty-two.

At 245-metres, the earliest airships were longer than three 747s put end-to-end.

The Zeppelin NT finally took to the skies on its maiden flight from Friedrichshafen on September 10, 1997.  In 2001, commercial flight operations began in Friedrichshafen.

Von Zeppelin, the man who invented commercial air travel, died more than one hundred years ago. A statue of him stands beside Lake Constance as a reminder of where it began.

Now, between April and November, you too can fly in a modern, helium-lifted Zeppelin that takes off in the place where commercial travel all began—Friedrichshafen, Germany, on the scenic shores of Lake Constance.

Flights are between thirty minutes and two hours, and www.zeppelinflug.de has twelve scenic routes that fly close enough to the ground to make out details of sights such as the Rhine Falls of Schafhausen , Europe’s largest waterfall, and the garden island of Mainau .

We drifted us over Hagnau, Meersburg and  Kreuzbergen. Then to Konstanz and the Rhine inlet.

During my flight, we silently lapped Germany’s largest  lake, Lake Constance, at a speed of  35 knots or 65 kilometres per hour, burning 90 litres of gas in the process. Below we could see the Pfander cablecar at Bregenz, the old Lighthouse and Gunpowder Tour of Lindau , a charming Bavarian town on an island in the lake.

There are now Zeppelin airfields in Bonn, Munich, Moechengladbach, Bad-Homburg and Essen/Mulhein too.

The 14-passenger Zeppelin LZ NO7-101 is 75 metres long and 19.5 metres wide. It can fly for twenty-two hours. The Zeppelin takes off with a static gravity of about 350 kg, so it’s actually heavier than air.

Explained our pilot , “The Zeppelin NT maintains its outer shape with the help of an internal structure, which is like a framework of beams and struts, and the overpressure of the non-flammable helium.”

“The semi-rigid structure of the Zeppelin consists of three longerons made of an aluminum framework and triangular struts made of carbon fiber. The envelope material is fastened to the longerons and is made of a high-strength multilayer laminate. The engines are also mounted on to the internal framework and are far from the gondola. The internal structure of the Zeppelin allows the engines to be attached  at a location where they can operate most efficiently”.

With its three swiveling engines, our Zeppelin operates like a helicopter and only needs a ground crew of three. The giant airship moved silently over the landscape of the “Swabian Sea” (as Lake Constance is called at times), gliding over orchards, hop fields, castles, convents,  marshlands, fishing and sailing boats, windsurfers, and the monastic island and UNESCO World Heritage site of Reichenau.

We came down as gently as we had gone up. There was no holding pattern. No screeching of brakes. No bumps.

Views from our Zeppelin

Once back on the ground, your air travel experience doesn’t need to end.

In the Zeppelin city of Friedrichshafen, the second largest city on the Bodensee, it makes sense you’d find the worthwhile Zeppelin Museum , idyllically set against Lake Constance, where you can discover two collections. The first is the world’s largest collection on airships and the innovation of “lighter than air” travel, including a  reconstruction of the infamous LZ129 Hindenburg, named after the Prime Minister, Paul von Hindenburg.

Museum visitors can walk through this replica and see what passengers experienced aboard the original airship, which made 18 round-trip flights before meeting its deadly demise while landing in Lakehurst, New Jersey in 1937.

Altogether, nearly six hundred commercial Zeppelin flights were made covering 1.7 million miles. Some artefacts from these momentous events in civil aviation history can be seen at the museum. You can also see  blueprints, engine parts, original ticket stubs, commemorative coins and stamps, posters, menus, cutlery and crockery used on the VIP flights.

The Zeppelin Museum also houses an impressive art collection, with close to 4000 works of art from significant artists of the region, spanning medieval to modern times.

Meanwhile, the airplane hanger turned Dornier Museum brings 100 exciting years of air and space travel to life, with exhibits that include 12 original aircraft, seven full-scale aerospace exhibits, and two full-scale aircraft replicas: the Dornier Merkur and Dornier Wal.

From Friedrichshafen you can also explore the lakeside towns of Uberlingen, Langenargen with its Moorish Montfort Castle , Wasserburg, and Bad Schachen.

The Zeppelin Cockpit

The Takeway

The last Zeppelin airship produced in Friedrichshafen was the Graf Zeppelin 11,  which entered service in 1938. After the Hindenberg disaster, Zeppelins stopped flying. As of today, fifteen thousand people have gone up in the Zeppelins over the last five years, and giant airships may be on the cusp of a comeback as an eco-friendly means of shipping goods around the globe.

For now though, head to Friedrichshafen and www.zeppelinflug.de for a nostalgic flight into the past and look toward the future.

Cruising Europe in Style

So what are you waiting for? It's time to experience the magic of Zeppelin travel for yourself. Whether you're planning a romantic getaway, a corporate retreat, or an unforgettable event, we're here to make your dreams a reality. Book your Zeppelin tour of Europe today, and get ready to cruise in style like never before.

A modern Zeppelin, also known as a rigid airship, is a complex and sophisticated aircraft that is built using advanced materials and technology. The construction of a modern Zeppelin involves a combination of traditional and modern techniques, as well as high-quality materials that are designed to provide strength, durability, and performance.

The main components of a modern Zeppelin include the envelope, the gondola, the engines, and the control systems. Each component is carefully designed and constructed to ensure optimal performance and safety.

The envelope, which is the outer shell of the airship, is typically made of a lightweight but strong material such as Kevlar, Dacron or carbon fiber. The envelope is filled with gas, usually helium, which provides the buoyancy needed to lift the airship into the air. The envelope is also fitted with a series of internal and external frames, which help to maintain its shape and rigidity.

The gondola, or cabin, is the part of the Zeppelin where passengers and crew are located. It is typically made of lightweight materials such as aluminum or composite materials, and is designed to be as comfortable and spacious as possible. The gondola is also fitted with a range of modern amenities such as climate control, sound systems, and even luxury furnishings.

The engines of a modern Zeppelin are typically powered by a combination of electric motors and combustion engines. These engines are located in pods attached to the bottom of the envelope, and are designed to provide the thrust needed to move the airship forward or backward.

The control systems of a modern Zeppelin are also highly sophisticated, and are designed to provide the pilot with precise control over the airship's movement and direction. These systems include a variety of sensors, computers, and other components that work together to provide the pilot with real-time information about the airship's position, speed, and other critical data.

To assemble a modern Zeppelin, each of these components is carefully constructed and then assembled using a combination of traditional and modern techniques. The envelope, for example, is typically constructed using a combination of hand-sewing and advanced welding techniques, while the gondola is often constructed using advanced CNC machining and composite materials.

Once each of the components has been constructed, they are assembled together using a combination of bolts, screws, and other fasteners. The finished airship is then thoroughly tested and inspected to ensure that it meets strict safety standards and is ready for flight.

Overall, the construction of a modern Zeppelin is a highly complex and sophisticated process that involves the use of advanced materials and technology. However, the end result is a truly remarkable aircraft that is capable of providing an unparalleled experience for passengers and crew alike.

The Zeppelin , also known as the airship or dirigible, was a popular mode of air transportation in the early 20th century. While they fell out of favor due to safety concerns and the rise of airplanes, there has been a renewed interest in bringing back the Zeppelin as a mode of luxury transportation.

With advances in technology and safety measures, Zeppelins could be a viable option for luxury travel in the modern world. Zeppelins are not limited by runways like airplanes, making them a flexible option for travel. They also offer a unique and luxurious travel experience, with spacious cabins and stunning views.

A Zeppelin tour of Europe would be an incredible way to see the continent in style. With a slow and leisurely pace, passengers could take in the breathtaking views of the Alps, the French countryside, and the Scandinavian coastline. The cabins could be outfitted with luxurious amenities like comfortable beds, high-end entertainment systems, and gourmet dining options.

Zeppelins could also be used for exclusive events like weddings, corporate retreats, and even music festivals. With the ability to fly over scenic locations, Zeppelin events could offer a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

Of course, safety concerns would need to be addressed before Zeppelins could be reintroduced into the mainstream. Advances in technology and safety measures could make Zeppelins a safe and reliable mode of transportation once again.

In conclusion, the Zeppelin could fit the modern world as a mode of luxury travel, offering a unique and unforgettable experience for passengers. A Zeppelin tour of Europe would be an amazing way to see the continent, and Zeppelin events could offer an exclusive and memorable experience. With the right technology and safety measures, Zeppelins could once again become a viable option for air transportation.

The Pinnacle of Personal Travel: Why Private Jets?

With a private jet, you have the flexibility to create your own schedule, choose your own airports, and avoid the unpredictability of commercial flying. This level of convenience and efficiency is invaluable for business travelers, celebrities, or anyone who values their time and privacy. Private aviation also allows for a level of customization that is unmatched by commercial airlines, from bespoke interiors to gourmet catering.

Statistic: According to a report by Grand View Research, the global private jet market size was valued at USD 13.64 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.2% from 2021 to 2028. This growth is indicative of the increasing demand for luxury travel and the value placed on privacy, convenience, and time-saving. As the world becomes more connected, and as people seek more personalized and exclusive experiences, the allure of private jet travel continues to soar.

Unmatched Access: The World is Your Oyster

One of the most significant advantages of flying private is the access to a wider range of airports. Commercial airlines are limited to about 550 airports in the U.S., but private jets can take you to over 5,000 airports nationwide. This means you can land closer to your final destination, reducing travel time and hassle. The ability to access smaller, less congested airports not only provides convenience but also ensures a more discreet and efficient travel experience.

With private jet travel , the world truly becomes your oyster. Whether you're flying to a remote island, a bustling city, or a secluded mountain retreat, private jets offer the ultimate in accessibility. This unparalleled access opens up a world of possibilities for personal vacations, business trips, or spontaneous getaways. It allows travelers to explore hidden gems and reach destinations that might otherwise be difficult or time-consuming to access.

Fact: Private jets can use more than 5,000 airports in the U.S., while commercial airlines only reach around 550. This extensive network of airports is a game-changer for travelers seeking convenience, speed, and flexibility. It's not just about getting there faster; it's about making the journey as enjoyable and stress-free as possible.

The Status Symbol: More Than Just a Flight

Private jets are more than just a mode of transportation; they are a statement of power, success, and distinction. They offer an elite level of service, privacy, and comfort that is unrivaled. For many, the decision to fly private is about more than just convenience; it's about experiencing the zenith of luxury and personalization. Whether hosting a business meeting in the sky, enjoying quality time with family, or simply relaxing in a bespoke cabin, private jet passengers expect and receive the best of the best.

How to Charter a Private Jet: A Step-by-Step Guide

Embarking on the journey of chartering a private jet is an exciting venture into the world of luxury travel. The process, while seemingly complex, can be broken down into manageable steps to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Initially, define your travel needs by setting a clear itinerary. Consider the number of passengers, destinations, dates, and any specific requirements you might have. This information is crucial in selecting the right aircraft that suits your needs, whether it's a light jet for short trips or a larger, long-range aircraft for international travel.

Next, delve into the vast market of private aviation and select a reputable broker or operator. These professionals offer invaluable expertise and access to a wide range of aircraft. They can guide you through the selection process, ensuring that the jet you choose meets all your criteria for comfort, size, and range. Discuss your preferences and let them tailor the experience to your desires, from in-flight catering to ground transportation.

Understanding the charter agreement is vital. It outlines all the terms, conditions, and costs associated with your charter flight. Pay close attention to details such as cancellation policies, luggage allowances, and any additional fees that might apply. A clear understanding of these elements will help avoid any surprises and ensure a transparent and fair agreement.

Finally, confirm your booking and prepare to enjoy the unparalleled experience of private jet travel. With every detail tailored to your preference, you're set to enjoy the ultimate in luxury, convenience, and efficiency. Welcome aboard your private jet, where the journey is just as important as the destination!

Insider Tips and Uncommon Angles

Maximizing the value of your private jet experience goes beyond simply booking a flight. It involves strategic planning and knowing the industry's best-kept secrets. Here are some insider tips to ensure that every journey you take is as cost-effective as it is luxurious:

Firstly, flexibility is your best friend when it comes to securing the best rates. Private jet pricing can vary significantly based on demand, so if you have the ability to adjust your travel dates, you might find significantly lower prices. Avoid peak travel times and be open to flying on weekdays or during off-peak hours to enjoy quieter skies and better rates.

Secondly, don't overlook the opportunity presented by empty leg flights. These are flights that need to return to their base or reposition for the next customer and are often sold at a fraction of the cost. Subscribing to newsletters or alerts from reputable charter companies can keep you informed about these deals, offering luxury travel experiences at incredibly competitive prices.

Lastly, building a relationship with a charter company can yield numerous benefits. Frequent flyers might find themselves with access to exclusive deals, personalized services, or even complimentary upgrades. A good rapport with your provider ensures that your preferences are known and met with each flight, from your favorite meals to the smallest comfort details, making every journey uniquely yours.

By employing these strategies, you can enjoy the opulence of private jet travel while also being savvy about your investment. Each trip becomes not just a journey but a masterfully crafted experience of luxury and efficiency.

Conclusion: The Sky's the Limit

The allure of private jet travel is undeniable, representing the zenith of luxury , privacy, and convenience. As the epitome of modern travel, it caters to those who demand the highest standards in speed, comfort, and service. Whether you're a business executive seeking efficiency or a leisure traveler desiring the ultimate in exclusivity, private jets provide a tailored experience that commercial flights simply cannot match.

The growing market reflects a broader recognition of the value of time and quality, with more individuals and companies choosing to invest in the unmatched experience of private aviation. As technology advances and accessibility increases, the sky's the limit for the future of private jet travel. Embrace the journey where every detail is refined to perfection, and the world becomes your oyster, all from the comfort of your personal sanctuary above the clouds.

These amazing color photos of the Hindenburg Zeppelin show what luxury flying was like 80 years ago

  • Before the rise of the modern airliner, the Zeppelin was the standard-bearer for luxury air travel.
  • The most famous of the Zeppelins was the Hindenburg.
  • The Hindenburg entered service in 1936 and could carry 50 passengers across the Atlantic Ocean.

Before the modern jumbo jet and its first class suites, the biggest and grandest thing in luxury air travel was the German Zeppelin Airship.

Of all the massive Zeppelin's constructed, the most famous was the Hindenburg. The Hindenburg was designed to ferry passengers across the Atlantic in serenity, with the dirigible floating smoothly through the clouds.

The Hindenburg was the first of two "Hindenburg" Class airships constructed by the Zeppelin Company. Construction of the airship began in 1931 and was completed in 1936. The Hindenburg, along with its highly successful predecessor, the Graf Zeppelin, made numerous trans-Atlantic crossings in their brief but illustrious careers.

Constructed out of an aluminum alloy called duralumin, the Hindenburg's massive framework was filled with seven tons of hydrogen. Hydrogen is much lighter than air and allows the massive Zeppelin to carry more people in greater levels of luxury. However, with an ignition source, an oxidizer, and right concentration, hydrogen can also be incredibly flammable.

The Hindenburg entered passenger service in May of 1936 and carrier up 50 passengers in luxury across the Atlantic.

The legend of the Hindenburg's luxurious amenities are well known, but most have not seen them in living color. So take the opportunity to check out these wonderful photos of the Zeppelin's passengers spaces courtesy of airships.net and the German Federal Archive .

Prior to the age of the airliner, Zeppelin airships ruled the skies over the north Atlantic — connecting cities like New York with Western Europe. Zeppelin's fleet of airships included such colossal creations like the Graf Zeppelin and the Hindenburg (seen here) along with the less famous Graf Zeppelin II.

In fact, here's a photo of Business Insider's former world headquarters taken from the Graf Zeppelin in 1929.

zeppelin luxury travel

The most well known of the Zeppelin airships was named after former German President Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg.

zeppelin luxury travel

Also known as the LZ129, the 803 foot-long vessel was nearly four-times the length of a Boeing 747.

zeppelin luxury travel

The Hindenburg was also fast. It's quickest transatlantic crossing took a mere 43 hours. This was a drastic improvement of the four days it took even the speediest of the ocean liners.

zeppelin luxury travel

However, the Hindenburg's ultimate calling card was its luxury. The airship's luxury accommodations like the dining room — seen here — were located within its fabric hull, while the gondola where the crew commanded the ship was located below.

However, there were windows so passengers could enjoy the beautiful view as they floated over the ocean.

zeppelin luxury travel

The 19-foot-wide and 43-foot-long dining room featured silk wallpaper depicting the exploits of the Hindenberg's sister ship, the Graf Zeppelin. The chairs were even made from tubular aluminum to reduce weight.

zeppelin luxury travel

Located near the dining room was the Hindenburg's lounge. It, too, featured lightweight aluminum seats — see here upholstered in brown. During its first year of service in 1936, the lounge even featured a grand piano. However it was removed in 1937 and was not onboard for the final flight.

zeppelin luxury travel

The wall of the lounge was covered with a large mural depicting the routes taken by famous explorers, ocean liners, and other Zeppelins.

zeppelin luxury travel

Next to the lounge was a writing room where passengers could spend some time in peace.

zeppelin luxury travel

Sandwiched in between the lounge and the dining room were the Hindenburg's passenger cabins. They measured 78" X 66" and featured a pair of bunk beds.

zeppelin luxury travel

One deck below the dining room, lounge, cabins, and writing room was the smoking room and bar. This was an odd feature to have for a ship filled with seven tons of highly combustible hydrogen. But smoking was much more common back then.

zeppelin luxury travel

Rightly so, the smoking room was separated from the rest of the Zeppelin by an airlock and the room was kept at a positive air pressure so no hydrogen could leak in. In addition, no open flames were allowed in the area and a single electric lighter was provided instead.

zeppelin luxury travel

Exactly one year after its maiden passenger-carrying flight, the Hindenburg was destroyed in a fiery inferno as it attempted to land at Lakehurst, New Jersey. thirty-five people onboard the airship along with one person on the ground perished in the tragedy. Amazingly, 62 of the 97 onboard survived.

zeppelin luxury travel

The fire was blamed on a spark that caused the Zeppelin's hydrogen to ignite. Although conspiracy theories over the cause of the tragedy abound.

zeppelin luxury travel

The crash of the Hindenburg marked the end of the airship era and ushered in the rise of rise of airlines like Pan Am. By 1940, the two remaining Zeppelin airships were scrapped on the order Germany's Nazi regime so their parts could be used to build weapons of war.

Krasnodar, Russia

Krasnodar, Russia

Tours, Attractions and Things To Do in Krasnodar

Here we are in the South of Russia. Welcome to Krasnodar, a major economic and cultural center of North Caucasus, also called “the capital of Kuban”. Krasnodar, perhaps, is one of the most interesting resort towns of the Russian Federation. It is a relatively young city founded by the Cossacks in в 1793 on the lands granted by Ekaterina II (hence its former name was Ekaterinodar). Later, when the Soviet system rose to power, the city was re-named to Krasnodar in 1920, and it preserved this name up to date.

Krasnodar is a center of the Russia’s southern touristic zone, located of the right bank of the Kuban River, 120-150 km from two warm seas – the Black and the Azov. It is an interesting fact that the city is located in the golden section of the Earth, almost in between the equator and the North Pole, right on the 45th parallel, also called “the Golden Line” or “the Life Line”. There exists an opinion that the living conditions in these latitudes are most favorable for human.

In spite of the city’s “youth” Krasnodar has many historical landmarks, while its architectural look is various and represented by different styles from Baroque and Classicism to late Modern. In Krasnodar, there is one of the largest Russian churches – Saint Catherine’s Cathedral, built as early as in 1914 and survived by a miracle under the Soviet power. It is also worth while visiting the Krasnodar main Orthodox Church – Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Interesting and dramatic, was the fate of this, one of the Russia’s most beautiful churches, an example of Russian and Byzantine templar style. Alexander Nevsky Military Cathedral was erected in April 1853, but later on, in year 1932 it was blown up by the Communists. And it was not until May 2006 when the inauguration ceremony of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral built anew took place.

Nowadays the Krasnodar architectural variety combines the harmony of old and modern structures. Now, next to the churches there are also modern high-rise buildings (the Marriott Hotel”), shopping and entertainment centers (“Red Square”), modern concert halls (Palace of Arts “Premiere”), restaurants, and night clubs. The city also strikes with its numerous museums, theaters, art galleries. Particularly, if you find yourself in Krasnodar, we recommend you to visit the Krasnodar Regional Art Museum named after F. A. Kovalenko to enjoy a rare collection of Russian avant-garde and Dutch art of XVI century, and also attend concerts of SSAI “Kuban Cossack chorus” to listen to Kuban Cossack, Russian and Ukrainian folk-songs.

Two Krasnodar unusual landmarks enjoy wide popularity among tourists and local community: the Monument to a purse and the Monument to the doggies in love. Do you want to turn round? Then you are to the purse. It is enough to rub your purse over it, and you will have more money. But if you are unlucky in love, then the loving couple of dogs will help you, you should stroke their small paws and love will certainly come to you.
