  What's special about Erikson Rover Safaris? Our Range Rovers and Land Rovers (13 all together) are old and rough and have slightly different configurations. They run on both petrol and diesel. Among our 4X4 Rovers  we offer rent out with roll-over protection, jerry cans, a pair of spare wheels and all camping equipment that may be needed - included rooftop tent. Some vehicles comes with double sets of fuel pumps (petrol), batteries and coil/ignition.The vehicles are covered by PSV insurance, which include self drive and chauffeur driven safaris in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania - unlimited mileage.

At Explorer Kenya Safaris, we provide 4×4 safari vehicle hire and rental. We have a fleet of 25  4 x 4 safari land cruisers and safari customised vans for hire . Each vehicle is accompanied by an experienced safari guide who is also a professional driver. Our vehicle licences require the car to be driven by our driver guides. This is because the vehicles are licenced as tour service vehicles (TSV) under Kenyan law. Therefore, our experienced safari driver guides must drive the cars with the necessary tour guide licence. Our guides have between 10 and 35 years of experience guiding wildlife safaris. We can also assist you in booking your hotels and arranging your safari itinerary. The service can be included as part of your safari vehicle hire at no extra cost. If you need a self-driving car hire vehicle, we cannot help you.

4×4 Safari Vehicle Hire – Car Rental for Safari Customized 4×4 Land Cruisers, Jeeps, and Safari Vans

We have a wide range of safari vehicles that can withstand all-terrain. Vehicles include safari mini-vans with a top hatch for easy game viewing, 4 x 4 all-terrain safari land cruisers, and 25 seat shuttle buses for groups.

All our safari vehicles are customised for the rough safari terrain and are well serviced and in excellent condition to ensure they do not break down when you are on your safari in Kenya . The safari vehicles are also fitted with long-range high-frequency radio so that driver-guides can communicate in parks when searching for wildlife on game drives. Note we are a destination management company (DMC) based in Kenya, so we can also assist you in planning your safari in Kenya and Tanzania at no extra cost, even when all you need is to hire a safari vehicle. We will advise on the best places to visit depending on the safari season and the most appropriate places to stay when in or near parks for the best safari experience. We can also help you book accommodation and advise on park fee payments, and if it’s all too much work, we can arrange the whole safari for you as a package depending on your requirements. We will work together to ensure you get the best experience possible when planning and when on your safari in Kenya and Tanzania.

4×4 Car Hire Kenya – Types of Safari Vehicles Available for Hire

There are five types of vehicles available for hire for your safari in Kenya and Tanzania. These are

• eight seat 4×4 Land Cruisers
• seven seat 4×4 Land Cruisers
• five seat 4×4 Land Cruisers
• eight seat safari vans
• 25 seat shuttle buses

Each vehicle has its advantages and use. Groups mainly use the shuttle buses for transfers within cities since they are not made for rough terrain. The other four types of vehicles are specially made for safari and have pop-up roofs which open up vertically to ensure you can stand on a game drive and take photos of animals and birds while in national parks and game reserves. They have large slide windows that you can open and enjoy your game drive in the park if you get tired of standing to use the pop-up roof. Some seven and five seat Land Cruisers are also customised specially for wildlife photography. They have canvas roll-up windows which, your driver-guide will roll up before a game drive for an expansive view and easy manipulation of your cameras (especially with long photography lenses!) when taking photos. These vehicles are ideal for wildlife photography safaris. Note bean bags can be provided free of charge – on request – if you need one to stabilise your camera when taking photos.

Toyota Land Cruiser (4 wheel drive) – 8 or 7 seat safari customised 4×4 Land Cruisers and Jeeps

–  Safari vehicle hire rate per day is US$ 150 without fuel and park entry fees for the vehicle and driver-guide – Vehicle seats either eight or seven passengers comfortably. Each person has a window seat in the seven-seat vehicle. One person in the eight-seat vehicle occupies the middle seat at the back – The vehicle is customized for safari. It has a pop-up roof and has  special shock absorbers  for game viewing and photography – Vehicles are driven by a professional safari guide with between 10 – 35 years of experience guiding wildlife safaris – We provide a free airport pick up and drop off if the airport pick up and drop off is on the same days as your safari – The price given does not include fuel and does not include park entry fees for the vehicle and driver-guide. We can help you calculate this – The vehicle is ideal for any group between 8 – 4 people travelling together. – Every passenger has a window seat to spot wildlife (except in the eighth so that seat, where one passenger has to use the pop-up roof) – The vehicle has a large pop-up roof to view wildlife and for photography – The 4×4 Land Cruiser vehicle has a total of two diesel tanks, so it can cover long distances without refuelling – The vehicles are customised with a long extended chassis that allows for good legroom for all passengers – Vehicles have comfortable seats that recline – We have customised the vehicles with a specially customised load compensating suspension system for smoother rides on rough roads – The vehicle has High-Frequency Radio that allows the guide to collaborate with other guides when searching for wildlife. – All safari vehicles have two spare wheels – They also have four doors that open wide for easy access – WiFi can be provided at no extra cost on request

The kind of safari vehicle you use during a safari in Kenya contributes a lot to your overall experience. There are three main types of Kenya safari vehicles used by Kenya Safari Travel Agencies .

These include 4×4 safari land cruisers, safari vans, and overland safari trucks (campervans and motorhomes). Smaller safari cars are also used for airport and hotel transfers and short excursions , especially within Nairobi.

The right safari vehicle is influenced by several factors, including the destinations you want to visit and your budget. The experience you are looking for and the number of people in your group also play a role. 

The safari van is the best option if you are on a tight budget. A 4 x 4 land cruiser safari is best if you want a classic African safari experience. Note that the safari van and the 4×4 safari land cruiser accommodate six people.

That ensures every traveler gets a window seat and enjoys the open roof for optional game viewing. That said, the safari vehicles can accommodate two additional people (a total of 8 pax), but they won’t get a window seat.

The Top 4 Types of Kenya Safari Vehicles Review

Many Kenya visitors that visit national reserves and parks use a 4×4 safari land cruiser or safari vans. As you will find out, these safari vehicles come in different categories and suites different budget categories.

Closed & Open 4WD Safari Land Cruiser

The Toyota Land Cruiser is the most luxurious African safari vehicle that you can use. It adds to your Kenya Safari Costs from USD 250 to USD 350 per day, including fuel and everything else.

You can get a lower land cruiser safari price in Kenya , but usually, these would be older vehicles during the off-peak seasons. Also, the car might be cheap upfront, but the driver will use tricks to save fuel consumption. Hence the lower rate.

For instance, if he is sent a notification on the UHF radio call that the pride of the lion has been spotted far from where you are, he might ignore it at your loss. I know you get the drift here; cheap is expensive.

Besides being a 4×4, which is crucial for challenging road conditions that you might encounter in some parks, the land cruiser is more comfortable than the safari van and safari trucks.

It can also access parts of the park that can not be accessed by other vehicles. I mean, the Toyota land cruiser is the ultimate rough road vehicle. The safari land cruisers are, however, very different from the typical land cruisers on the road.

This is because they are customized explicitly for game viewing, and not all are identical since different tour companies or camps have modified them differently. Changing the safari vehicles in Kenya , especially the land cruiser, is a great balancing act.

The car must be safe for road travel, such as between Nairobi and Masai Mara , and be open enough to facilitate game viewing and great photography. If the land cruiser is used for road travel from Nairobi, say to the Masai Mara , it will have glass windows as a required safety measure. That will be a Closed-Side 4WD Safari Land Cruiser .

Open-Side 4WD Safari Land Cruiser or Jeeps are only used for game drives inside the park. These vehicles are fully opened on the side and aren’t used to transfer guests from destination to destination.

Professional photographers use other types of land cruisers (see the photo below). These come with two or three seats to allow the photographer to carry their equipment efficiently and for effective photo shots.

The typical 8-seater has two seats at the front, two in the middle, three at the back, and one next to the driver/guide.  The safari land cruiser also has a pop-up roof to maximize game viewing and photography.

If the windows do not come off, they will be large and slide open to allow for good views. Most 4×4 safari land cruisers are customized to ensure a window seat for six passengers.

There is good space at the back for more oversized luggage and small day backpacks under the seats. The seat next to the drive is also used for carrying more luggage.

The safari vehicle is also fitted with a UHF radio call, an important feature that allows the guide to communicate with other drivers during the game drive. This enables them to share information on the spots with interesting happenings like a hunt.

Most 4 x 4 safari land cruiser vehicles have ports for charging phones/ electronics, portal Wi-Fi, a music system, and a cooler box to preserve drinks. Some may have custom shock absorbers to minimize the well-known ‘African massage” (bumpy ride on bad roads).

Most land cruisers have two fuel tanks to ensure continuity during game drives and two spare tires to mitigate incidences of getting a flat tire that may happen in the bush.

4WD & 2WD Safari Tour Van in Kenya

The safari vans are typically Nissan or Toyota-made vehicles such as the Toyota HiAce van. It is customized for Kenya safari holidays , and the most prominent feature is the pop-up roof designed to allow maximum game viewing.

Typically, a safari van is modified to six comfortable seats that allow for extra legroom. The windows are also designed to slide open, allowing for game viewing and photography.

Generally speaking,  the land cruiser tour van price in Kenya is lower than the 4*4 land cruiser in terms of price, but this is not bad. Here you can expect to pay anything from USD 160 to USD 200 per day for the safari vehicle. 

While the land cruiser can navigate trickier road situations, there are a few places the van cannot, especially if it is a 2WD model. The 4WD safari vans can easily access most areas accessed by the land cruiser.

If you go to the regular national parks and not for an expedition on treacherous roads, the choice of which safari vehicle to go for mostly boils down to individual preferences and budget considerations.

The safari car is fitted with a cooler, port for charging phones, and increasingly Wi-Fi which is only helpful in good network connectivity. Like the land cruisers, the safari van is also equipped with radios to enable the driver to communicate with other vehicles during the game drive.

Kenya Safari Vehicle – Overland Truck

You can hire a safari land cruiser in Nairobi if traveling with only eight people or less, as this would make economic sense. Overland trucks are ideal for longer trips, such as across different countries with large groups of people, typically between 12 and 30.

Given these dynamics, overland safari trucks have to be well customized with enough space to carry luggage and required equipment and maneuver different types of terrain.

As with other safari cars, overland trucks are modified to different specifications, and the vehicle used will depend on the group’s dynamics. The seating in an overland truck varies. Some trucks have seats in a line on both sides, facing inward.

Other trucks have seats facing forward, yet other trucks have a mix of front and backward-facing seats. Regardless of the design, all seats are raised to allow for maximum animal viewing experiences and well-padded extra comfort.

The overland safari truck has large windows that either slide open or rolls up, allowing for excellent photo-taking opportunities. Some overland trucks may have a pop-up roof to maximize the viewing experience.

Because safari on an overland truck is typically for an extended period, it comes fully equipped with a ‘kitchen section. Among the staff is a cook who will prepare meals during designated stops in the safari, although larger groups on the road for long will likely assist by cooking in turns.

Kitchen equipment is stored in a compartment beneath the seats and includes stoves, food, cutlery, and washbasins. They are also fitted with refrigeration, such as more excellent boxes for perishable foods and drinks, foldable stools, a table, water tanks, and a tent as the cooking area.

If you take an overland safari truck, you will likely be on a camping safari . The car has enough storage to carry sleeping tents, bags, and personal luggage. Most overland safari trucks will generally have mobile phone and camera charging ports, overhead lockers to store cameras, and day bags.

They come fitted with a buzzer system to alert the driver when a stop is required, long-range fuel tanks, a safe for valuables, and a comprehensive first aid kit. Some models even have an onboard library to keep you busy when not much is happening outside.

African Safari Vehicles – Transfer Shuttles

Shuttle safari cars refer to vehicles that transfer guests from one point to another, such as from the airport to your hotel, but are not used for safari activity. Shuttles may also be used for short excursions in the city’s vicinity.

They vary in size depending on the number of people and their luggage. For example, two guests might require a small 5-seater saloon car, while five guests might require a bigger 7-seater safari car.

More than ten people might require a minivan, bus, and so on. Your tour company will have organized the appropriate airport pick-up based on your group numbers.

We booked a classic Landcruiser hire with driver-guide through 4×4 selfrive offroad safaris for a two week loop around Kenya. Our guide chris was a truly wonderful person to travel the country with. He was energetic, friendly, knowledgeable, and his love for the country, its landscapes, and people came through in all of his stories. Although the roads throughout much of the country are not paved, I would think self-drive would have been fine too. We found a guide helpful and it took the burden of planning off of us.

We are not campers, the mid-range lodges we stayed in (mostly those recommended by 4×4 self-drive) were wonderful. Peter from offroad safaris helped us create a trip within our budget, the whole trip was much less expensive than the packages we received from other companies.

Uganda exceeded our expectations on every front. The landscapes are breathtaking, the people are genuinely warm and friendly, the food was great, and we saw just about every animal we wished to see on safari. I would definitely recommend Uganda as a destination for those looking to safari in East Africa without as many of the crowds.

I explored Kenya on my own in a fantastic 4×4 Landrover Defender I hired from this company. The prices are pocket friendly, and the jeep was in perfect condition for self-drive through the wild Amboseli and Tsavo National Park and amazing Diani Beach. where the car was collected in Mombasa National Airport.

Apparently the defenders from this company are dust on offroad and deliver the best out of your safari.  In Tsavo we had and issue with the car not starting Ritchard was quick to respond and gladly it was a battery loose terminal from the bumpy road. upon fixing the vehicle cranked like a baby.

In Nov/Dec 2022 we spent another 4 weeks in East Africa. For myself this was the 3th time I travelled through Kenya, second through Tanzania. All my trips have been wonderfully prepared and arranged.

The Toyota Fortuner came in hardy and just perfect for the trip. both the rooftoptent and the ground tent were amazing with nice sleeping bags. camping equipment while for me (am into fancy and nice) so I did not like that much but was more than okey.

  Rented a Landcruiser Prado  with rooftop tent for a drive to Masai Mara Game Reserve from Nairobi for 7 days. we had good experience with the local people who live on meat and they can really jump very high. The delivery to our house was on time. The car was old but roadworthy.  Camping equipment was presentable and exceeded our expectations.  Ann and James were very friendly when handing over the car at our home. Though the car was quite thirsty. Since the car is old and has seen some hits and bruises, there was no protocol about previous damages. Same when we returned it. Everything very casual and hakuna matata. If you like to do selfdrive in Kanya and East Africa , these are the cars you want. Big, strong, save and old. Can only recomend it. And the prices are unbeatable. Don’t look any further.  This rental company was amazing.

We are visiting Amboseli at the end of June. We have accommodation, but the Lodge uses Toyota Land cruisers with windows and pop-up roofs for game drives, which make me a bit claustrophobic. We are looking for people/companies with Open-sided (or completely open) Safari vehicles to book for our Game drives. Does anyone know anyone who might be able to point us in the right direction? In my research it's been hard to find anyone with this type of vehicle who don't require you to use their accommodation and drives as a package. Thanks, Brian

Open-sided vehicles are based in the park and usually belong to the camp that operates your game drives. Are your bookings all confirmed a the camp? Do you have the option to switch to one that has better vehicles?

My mom and I one year flew there in 2021 our operator hired a freelance guide who had his own open sided vehicle. He was from the community nearby Amboseli . He met us at airstrip. He had previously worked at one of the camps there until he got laid off during Covid. His name was Junior unfortunately I don’t know his contact info as my TO arranged it.

I know my TO also hired open sided vehicle for use for my friends who went to samburu but didn’t hire the camp guide/vehicle as they wanted a private vehicle and one wasn’t available through their camp.

My recommendation would be to see if your TO is able to somehow arrange this for you.

Check if this is what you are looking for, I have been on one, they are partially open on the sides with pop up roof. The back is however closed. I found the vehicle to be just as good.

Hello Brian, Kibo have a sister camp in Maasai Mara called Mara Maisha camp who I've been in touch with regarding the same vehicle preference and they put me in touch with a company called Safari Revive who could offer me an open sided vehicle with driver. Thanks Karcy for the info. However the photos from the Excelgetaways company are showing exactly the type of vehicle that I'm trying to avoid. I'm really looking to emulate my old Kruger National Park days with a completely open, or at least open-sided Land Rover 4X4. (not for everyone, but personal preference). I didn't want to join the other thread because I was looking for Amboseli-specific information (Mara Masai seemed a long way away) , but maybe there is enough "cross-park" business to post there also.
