Long-stay travel insurance: providers that cover for over 90 days
Standard cover is only for trips of up to 31 days – so what if you’re away for longer.
W hether it’s Covid-related travel disruption, strikes or bad weather, travel insurance can take away some of the financial pain when things go wrong, provided you’ve taken out the right level of coverage. But most policies will only insure for trips of up to 31 days — some even shorter — so what happens if you’re going away for longer? Fortunately there are specialist insurers that can help, with policies designed to cover everything from backpacking trips to round-the-world cruises. Here’s what you need to know, including how longer trips can also affect your home insurance policy.
Main photo: visitors in New Zealand (Getty Images)
What’s the maximum length of a trip that can be covered by a travel insurance policy?
Even if you’ve purchased annual travel insurance, most standard policies will only cover you for trips of up to 31 continuous days. Some are even shorter, so it’s worth double checking the terms and conditions before you take out the cover.
For longer trips, you’ll need a specialist long stay or backpacker policy. These can provide coverage for up to 18 months — but do make sure you check the fine print as there may be limits on the number of times you can make a claim.
How could your home insurance be impacted?
If you have home insurance, check the terms of your policy for the unoccupied property clause. Most policies are only valid if you don’t leave your home unoccupied for more than 30 consecutive days, although some, such as LV and Swinton , will cover you for up to 60 days as standard.

If you’re planning to be away for a longer period of time, you’ll need to take out specialist unoccupied property insurance, which typically provides cover for three, six or 12 months. Some of the providers that offer these policies include Towergate Insurance , Homeprotect , and A-Plan .
Times Money Mentor has a guide to the type of home insurance policy you might need. Whatever policy you take out, make sure you read the fine print. Typically, you’ll have to let your insurers know when you’re going away for longer periods of time so they can advise you on any measures to take, such as leaving the heating on in your home so your pipes don’t freeze.
Which providers will cover longer trips?
• Alpha Travel Insurance • Cover For You • LV • Sainsbury’s Bank • InsureandGo
If you’re over 65, double check the fine print as there may be restrictions on how long you can be away for.

Travel Insurance for 90 Days or Longer
Are you planning a long trip but are not sure which kind of travel insurance plan is best for you? We receive a lot of questions about insuring long trips, so we compiled a list to make it easier for you.
If you still have questions about coverage for long (or short) trips, you can call our highly-rated customer service team at 800-699-3845.
What is long stay travel insurance?
When you plan on taking one long trip, it is important to know the maximum trip length your travel insurance policy will cover.
Under the Arch RoamRight Essential , Preferred , and Elite plans, the maximum covered trip length is 180 days. A trip is defined as the first date you leave your primary place of residence until the date you return to that primary residence or your permanent location. A trip is not defined by the destination.
For example, if you are planning a trip in which you leave your primary residence of New York and will visit France for 30 days followed by Amsterdam for another 30 days before returning to New York that is defined as one, 60-day long trip under your travel insurance policy.
What is included in long stay travel insurance?
As long as your trip length does not exceed the 180-day maximum trip length of the Essential, Preferred, and Elite travel insurance plans , your available coverage for a longer trip is the same as for shorter trips.
These plans include coverage for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Trip Delay, Lost/Stolen/Delayed Luggage, as well as emergency medical benefits, and more. For full details of coverage and benefit limits, you should review the policy documents prior to purchase.
Our handy travel insurance plan comparison page can help you compare the coverages and benefit limits among all three plans.
Should you get single-trip or annual travel insurance?
Travelers who are planning a long trip or are planning multiple trips in a single year often are unsure if they should get a single-trip travel insurance plan or if a Multi-Trip annual travel insurance plan is better.
For a long single trip:
If you are taking a single, long trip that is 180 days in length or shorter, you should focus on the single trip plans such as the Arch RoamRight Essential, Preferred, or Elite.
The reason why the Multi-Trip plan will not work for you is because the maximum trip length for that plan is 30 days. For any trips exceeding that length, you will have to buy an additional single-trip policy in order to have coverage.
For multiple shorter trips:
This is where the Multi-Trip plan is ideal. If you take multiple shorter trips – 30 days or less each – in a year, you should consider the Arch RoamRight Multi-Trip plan.
Travel insurance for a year-long trip or longer
Since Arch RoamRight’s single-trip plans have a maximum trip length of 180 days, we are unable to insure a trip that is a year or longer in length. If you are going to be staying outside of the United States for longer than 180 days at a time, you should look into expatriate insurance. Arch RoamRight does not offer expatriate insurance.
Should you add extra coverage if you are taking a long trip
Whether you should add additional coverage depends on your personal travel needs.
With the Essential, Preferred, and Elite plans, there are optional upgrades that are offered that you may need while you are on your trip. These include coverage for Hazardous Sports , increased benefit limits for certain medical coverages, and more.
Other 90 to 180 day travel insurance FAQs
Does it cost more to insure a long trip.
Yes, since Arch RoamRight plans are priced partly by length of trip, you will likely find insurance for a trip 90 days in length will cost more than a trip that is 30 days in length.
Is the Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusion waiver available for long trips?
Even for longer trips, you can receive the Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusion waiver if you meet all criteria for qualification.
Claims filed as the result of a Pre-Existing Condition are generally denied under a policy. This applies to pre-existing medical conditions affecting the insured, their traveling companion (insured or uninsured), or either of their family members. A Pre-Existing Conditions Exclusion waiver removes the application of that exclusion. Please note that the Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion waiver is not available with all Arch RoamRight plans.
For policies that do offer a Pre-Existing Condition waiver, you must meet all the following conditions:
- Purchase your travel insurance plan within 21 days of making your first trip payment;
- Insure the entire non-refundable cost of your trip;
- Must not be disabled † from travel at the time your premium is paid; and
- This must be the first and only booking for this same time period and destination.
† For definitions, please refer to the travel insurance policy .
Is there an age limit for coverage under Arch RoamRight for longer trips?
No, there is no age limit under Arch RoamRight policies for long or short trips.

Post Office Travel Insurance: A Getting Started Guide from the Experts!
The Post Office is regarded as the largest retail network in the UK as well as the largest financial services chain that’s been there for more than 370 years. However, apart from that, the company also offers insurance products, one of which is the post office travel insurance.
In this article, we’re going to talk about everything you need to know which regard to this particular travel insurance. But before that, let’s have a look at the achievements of the Post Office regarding insurances.
What is the Post Office?
Post Office has been voted the “Best Travel Insurance Provider” for 9 straight years starting from 2006 to 2015. Apart from that, it also received the Silver award from the British Travel Awards in 2016 and 2017.
As a massive network, the Post Office offers a wide range of options when it comes to their insurance policies. One of them is the rudimentary budget cover through the Super Economy Travel Insurance. There’s also the Premier Plus policy which provides complete coverage.
Primary Insurance Policies Offered
There are three main types of travel insurance policies offered by the Post Office, namely annual multi-trip, backpacker travel cover, and single trip.
Let’s have a breakdown of each of these policies:
Single Trip
The single trip insurance will provide coverage depending on your age when you obtain your insurance policy. The Post Office website states that those who are below 71 will be covered 365 days per trip. Meanwhile, those who are 71-75 will be covered 90 days and individuals 76-85 are only covered for 31 days.
As the name implies, a single trip policy will cover for you if you plan to take a single trip in the near future.
Annual Multi-trip
The multi-trip policy allows you to spread your trip abroad using a voluntary add-on. You can receive coverage of around £10 million for a medical emergency. They also have a 24/7 medical emergency helpline available.
This policy is perfect if you plan to travel several times a year without having to go through the hassles of obtaining concealment every single time.
For the single and multi-trip policies, there are five different levels available.
Here’s a detail detailing these levels alongside other important details:
All of the levels come with a personal liability cover ranging from £1-3 million. However, the Super Economy comes with various extras like death, personal accident, personal money, hospital benefits, and passport cover.
Backpacker Travel
The backpacker travel insurance is designed for backpackers who are price aware. As such, the Post Office provides two coverage options for them: Economy and Super Economy.
The two policies will provide coverage for up to 18 months. Moreover, you can come back home 3 times within a span of seven days. However, you have to keep in mind that the coverage doesn’t apply if you’re in the UK.
This is often the best option if you plan an adventure trip as it covers you from sharks to safaris and more. The policy can be availed of by anyone between 18 and 60 years old. You can also avail of additional cover for business, cruise, golf, and winter sports and add any of them in the above policies but for an extra cost.
Other Policies Offered
Apart from the major insurance policies offered by the Post Office, there are also several other policies which are as follows:
This is perfect for individuals who plan to go on a golfing holiday . Through this policy, you can enjoy the following:
- Protection in case you can’t play due to injury or poor weather
- Coverage against injury personal liability cover and while playing
- Coverage for your golfing equipment against theft

- Coverage for a delayed transport
- Coverage for damage or stolen evening dress
- Replacement of any lost or misplaced damaged

- Quick and easy repatriation
- Treatment monitoring
- Payment for any medical expenses while you’re traveling
Family Cover
This is the perfect policy if you plan to travel together with your policy. This will allow you to avoid any hassles that come with obtaining individual policies for each of your family members. It includes the following:
- Maximum of £10 million emergency medical coverage in the event of injury or illness while traveling
- Assistance during a vehicle breakdown missed departure or delayed public transport
Cost and Coverage
One of the main reasons why the Post Office travel insurance has managed to outdo most of its competitors in the market is its very cheap cost. In fact, it has the cheapest insurance quotes available on the market.
When it comes to coverage, Post Office covers all basic forms of coverage including property damage, comprehensive coverage, and bodily injury liability among others. However, you can also gain access to special kinds of coverages that are exclusive to Post Office travel insurance members.
These special coverages come in the form of emergency road service, rental reimbursement, and mechanical breakdown insurance.
Policy Exclusions
These are the general exclusions that apply to any of Post Office’s travel insurance policies:
- Claims due to war or act of terrorism
- Traveling for the purpose of receiving treatment overseas
- Traveling without heeding the advice of a medical professional
- Personal injury caused intentionally
- Taking part in an organized sports competition
Other Important Information about the Post Office Travel Insurance
- Apart from providing coverage for any personal injury or illness sustained while traveling abroad, the Post Office will also offer guidance, assistance, and advice regarding legal proceedings and obtaining proper compensation.
- When applying for any of their travel insurance policy, you can also choose to add an Excess Waiver. This will allow you to reduce your excess to zero, thereby removing the need to contribute to the cost of your claims. However, be prepared to spend an additional cost for this.
- Even though there are only a few travel insurance providers that cover business travel, the Post Office’s policy will provide coverage for business travel that can greatly help professionals abroad. This policy will provide coverage for emergency couriers, employee replacement, equipment hire, computer equipment, and business money. This is only optional.
- Not all optional cover types can be added to every policy type. Only the Cruise cover is applicable for the Premier and Premier Plus policies. Meanwhile, the Golf and Business cover is only applicable to Standard, Premier, and Premier Plus.
- Various holiday activities and sports will be covered by the Post Office under the Standard policy. However, riskier activities like sailing and jet skiing won’t be covered for any personal accident claims.

Buying travel insurance can be a smart move for most trips, but those who travel more than a few times a year should consider an annual travel insurance policy. Whether you regularly travel for business and/or take several vacations a year, annual travel insurance plans can help you get the coverage you need without having to price out and purchase protection every time you leave home.
If you find yourself in a situation where an annual plan makes sense, know that not all travel insurance companies offer this kind of coverage. You'll also want to consider the available annual travel insurance plans to see which options make sense for your travel style and the level of coverage you want.
Frequently Asked Questions
Annual travel insurance plans all work in their own way, but the majority let travelers pay one annual premium for coverage that lasts for up to 364 days. These plans often limit the length of individual trips that are covered within the coverage year. Per-trip and annual limits on coverage can also apply.
In some cases, annual travel insurance plans require a deductible or coinsurance for certain types of coverage. If you're considering an annual travel insurance plan because you take multiple trips each year, make sure you read over the policy details and understand all coverage limits and trip limits that apply.
The cost of annual travel insurance typically varies based on factors like the age of the travelers applying, included benefits and coverage limits. You will want to shop around to compare plans across multiple providers using a platform like TravelInsurance.com or Squaremouth before you settle on a travel insurance policy.
To provide an example of the cost of annual travel insurance, U.S. News applied for a quote for two 40-year-old travelers seeking coverage for eight trips over a 12-month period. The Squaremouth travel insurance portal quoted policies with costs that range from $206 for the GeoBlue Trekker Essential plan to $610 for the Safe Travels Annual Deluxe plan by Trawick International.
Annual travel insurance can be worth it if you take multiple trips each year and want to make sure you always have coverage in place. After all, the alternative to having a multitrip policy is buying a new travel insurance plan for every vacation you take. That's not always feasible for frequent travelers who are always jetting off somewhere new – often at the last minute.
Just keep in mind that annual travel insurance plans tend to come with lower coverage limits than plans for single trips, and that you'll pay a premium for coverage that comes with comprehensive benefits and high limits for medical expenses and emergency evacuation.

- AIG Travel Guard: Best for Basic Coverage
- Seven Corners: Best for Medical
- GeoBlue: Best for Expats

3-Month Travel Insurance Policies UK
If you’re planning on embarking on an adventure for 3 months, a 90-day travel insurance policy is what you should be on the lookout for. Whether you’re embarking on a volunteering project abroad, a gap year , a solo backpacking adventure, or a family holiday, if you need travel insurance for a 3-month trip you’ll be able to find the right policy with us.
Many people have annual travel insurance policies with their bank or as part of their financial arrangements, but these will not usually cover a 3-month trip. The maximum individual trip duration on most annual policies is usually 31 days or 45 days, and these periods cannot be extended. For longer durations, you need to select a Long Stay Travel Insurance which is intended for an extended stay abroad, such as a 3-month trip.
Lucky for you, here at Navigator Travel Insurance we specialise in UK Long Stay Insurance, with these policies covering trip durations extending from 2 months to 18 months. In this article, we aim to share with you all of the details you should consider before securing travel insurance for a 3-month trip. With this, you can embark on your next adventure with the peace of mind of knowing that you’re covered whether you’ll be voluntarily teaching in Africa, hiring a motorcycle in America, or visiting your family in Australia.
What Does 90-Day Travel Insurance Cover?
Before choosing any travel insurance policy, it’s important to understand exactly what you are covered for whilst you are embarking on your travels. Like most standard travel insurance policies, travel insurance for a 3-month trip often covers you for the following:
Damage, Loss, or Theft of Your Luggage
If your baggage is lost, damaged, or stolen whilst you are travelling, you are normally covered for the costs associated with this. It’s not uncommon for baggage to be damaged or lost, especially if your journey involves multiple layovers, which is why your travel insurance for a 3-month trip can come in handy in offering you compensation for your losses.
Long-stay travel insurance for your 3-month trip will cover you up to a certain amount if your baggage is stolen, lost, or damaged, meaning you should get some level of compensation to cover your possessions. Make sure that you read the terms of your policy to determine the maximum amount of compensation that you can get, as you want to make sure that this will cover any, or all, of your possessions if they are to be lost, damaged, or stolen.
Emergency Medical Expenses
If you find yourself needing emergency medical attention whilst you’re on your travels, your 90-day holiday insurance policy should cover you for this. Before you embark on any adventure away from home, there’s always a chance that you will be involved in an accident or sustain an injury. Thus, you want to ensure that you are covered with a suitable travel insurance policy for any medical bills you wrack up as a result of this and that you are able to return home if you’re too ill to continue your travels.
Holiday Cancellation or Curtailment
90-day travel insurance policies should cover you for holiday cancellation or curtailment. This means that, should an event occur in which you have to cancel or cut your trip short, any expenses that you incur as a result of this should be partially, or fully, covered by your insurance provider.
What Does 3-Month Travel Insurance Not Cover?
Whilst it’s important to consider what your travel insurance for a 3-month trip does cover, it’s equally important to research what it does not cover too. Travel insurance for 90 days will offer you important cover, such as cancellations and baggage loss, theft, or damage as mentioned above, but there are some things that they often don’t cover you for, which we’ve detailed further below:
Injuries or Accidents Related to High-Risk Activities
There may be certain activities that are covered by your 90-day travel insurance policy but, normally, this excludes high-risk activities. This is because these activities are deemed more dangerous than other low-risk activities, meaning that there’s a higher chance that you may get involved in an accident or sustain an injury.
These high-risk activities may include rock climbing, bungee jumping, or even winter sports. So, it’s important to chat with your insurance provider to see if you’ll need additional cover to add to your 3-month travel insurance policy if you’ll be partaking in these types of activities.
Accidents Related to Drugs or Alcohol Misuse
If you get involved in an accident whilst under the influence of drugs or alcohol, any claim that you make on your 90-day holiday insurance policy is likely to be rejected. It may be easy to get carried away in the excitement of your trip, but should you get involved in an incident whilst you’re under the influence this can have serious financial and legal repercussions and can place others at unnecessary risk.
Travel to Regions Against Government Advice
If you’re choosing to travel to countries or regions around the world that the Foreign, Commonwealth, & Development Office (FCDO) advises against, you should take into account that your 3-month holiday insurance policy will likely not cover this. We always advise staying up to date on the FCDO advice on which regions are safe to visit and which aren’t, as this can change at any time and at short notice.
Pre-Existing Health Conditions
If you have a pre-existing health condition, you’ll need to discuss with your travel insurance provider whether you will be covered under their 3-month travel insurance policy.
If you have long-term or pre-existing medical conditions such as Crohn’s disease or Diabetes, this means you may have to have more in-depth conversations with a travel insurance provider to find a suitable travel insurance policy for you. In light of this, a standard 3-month travel insurance policy may not be suitable for your personal circumstances.
Change of Heart
If you simply decide closer to your departure time that you don’t want to embark on your trip anymore, this will not be covered by your 90-day travel insurance policy. The only circumstances in which you may be able to claim on your travel insurance plan is if the reasons for you not departing on your trip are a result of extenuating circumstances that are out of your control, not because of a change of heart.
How Much Does 3-Month Travel Insurance Cost?
Travel insurance pricing varies as it depends on the type of 3-month travel insurance policy you choose, and the level of cover that this offers. With each type of policy, you’ll find different inclusions and exclusions, and normally you’ll find that the more expensive the policy is the more you are covered for.
Here at Navigator Travel, we offer 90-day travel insurance policies including our Standard Long Stay or Silver and Gold Long Stay Policies. You can chat with us about the costs associated with each of these policies, or our specific volunteering , backpacker, or gap year policies which will cover you for 3-months of travel too.
Call us today on 0161 973 6435 or chat with us via our online contact form to find the best travel insurance for 90 days for you and the costs this will incur.
Depending on your age, you may not be covered on certain long-stay holiday insurance policies for your 3-month trip, or you may have to pay more because of your age. This is because, as we grow older, we may be more likely to need to access healthcare or receive treatment on our travels.
If you’re an older individual looking to purchase a travel insurance policy with us, the maximum ages for our long-stay holiday insurance policies here at Navigator Travel are:
- 69 or 75 years for our Longstay and Backpacker Policy
- 59 years for our Gold and Silver Policies
However, if you’re over 65, we offer our over 65s travel insurance policies specifically for you, which are suitable for a range of trips, including those of 3 months in length. Cover for older adults can be offered for up to 94 days on our Travel Plus Policy, and for up to 6 months on our Adventures Policies. Get in touch with us now to find out further details .
Your Health
If you have a pre-existing health condition, you may have to pay more for your 3-month travel insurance policy. This is because you may be more likely to need to receive specialist medical treatment whilst you’re travelling.
It is always worth discussing with your travel insurance provider what your medical circumstances are before purchasing a policy. This may mean that additional cover needs to be added to your chosen policy, which is what incurs additional costs. But, this additional cost is always worth it to ensure that you remain happy and healthy on your travels.
Duration of Your Trip
If you’re planning to travel for extended periods, this means that your insurance policy costs more than it would for say a 1-week trip or a 2-week getaway. This is because you will be covered for a longer period of time. Whilst travel insurance for a 3-month period may not be too expensive, it will be more expensive than travel insurance for a few days or weeks, so this is something to bear in mind before planning your trip.
Your Destination
The destination that you’re travelling to may mean that your travel insurance policy costs more or less than it would in another destination. For example, the price for a travel insurance policy for a trip to the USA is more expensive than that of a policy for the same period of time, and with the same inclusions, for a holiday in Europe. This is down to destinations around the world being ranked based on how ‘high risk’ they are, and the USA is viewed as a higher risk destination than Europe. This is something that you should bear in mind when considering travel insurance pricing.
Your Luggage and Personal Possessions
If you have lots of expensive items in your luggage and on your person, you’ll want to make sure that these will be covered by your insurance policy if they are lost, damaged, or stolen. But, the more expensive the items you have, the more expensive your insurance policy will be to cover these. For example, if you plan on taking multiple expensive gadgets, jewellery, or other items with you on your travels, your policy will likely cost more. You can purchase a more expensive policy or pay a higher premium on your insurance if you are planning on taking multiple expensive items with you on your travels.
Activities You Plan To Do
Whenever you visit a new destination, it’s likely that you’ll be planning on partaking in some exciting activities that you may not be able to experience at home or that you have always had on your bucket list, which will leave you with some fantastic memories of your travels.
But, depending on the activities you want to partake in, it’s likely that you’ll need to add additional cover to your insurance or choose a more expensive insurance policy, especially if these activities are high-risk. Activities including winter sports, high-altitude trekking , and skydiving are considered to be extreme activities and would need additional insurance to be added on top of your 90-day insurance policy, incurring extra costs.

How to Phone and Send Post from Moscow
To be omnipresent in Moscow you’ll need wi-fi or cellular phone capabilities. It’s better to get a local SIM card to avoid high roaming costs. The best one is from Megafon, who offers “Mezhdunarodny” tarif with cheap calls abroad and inexpensive fast speed LTE (4G) internet (get a prepaid 3 gig pack for 10 eur). They also have lots of additional options you’d need to switch on to save money, so check out their English-language website. One thing to keep in mind is that all Russian cell phone operators have slightly higher tariffs if you travel outside of the city where you bought your SIM. So check out their roaming tariffs and buy the SIM in the region you’ll spend most of your time in or switch on the cheaper roaming options.
How to phone from Moscow
The phone code of Moscow is 495. If you phone inside Moscow , you should just dial the 7-digit number. If you phone to another country , dial 8, wait for a long tone, dial 10 (for international access), then the code of the country, of the city, and the phone number you need. If you phone to another town in Russia , dial 8, wait for a long tone, and then dial the code of the city, followed by the local phone number. If you phone to a mobile phone , which doesn't have a direct Moscow number, dial 8, wait for a long tone, and then dial the number (for example, 910 555-5555).
Using Public Phones
Most of the pay phones require a phonecard, which you can buy at any metro station's ticket office. Each phone has an instruction in English on the display and you can change the language of it by pressing the button "L". The telephone card - Tele`fonnaya `Karta - can be for 20 units (minutes) - 60 R ($2) or 50 units (one hour) - 105 R ($4). The public phones are usually located near or inside all metro stations and at the other popular places. It's possible to use those public phones for international calls too, but it's very expensive, better consider the options below.
How to communicate with the outside world?
First, you can phone from the hotel or hostel you're staying in. Usually hotels charge much more than it really costs, so it's not a very good idea. If you live in an apartment, the price would be around 20R ($0.7) a minute if the call goes through MGTS local provider (it will, in most cases). You can also go to the Tverskaya ulitsa, 7 (central telegraph, opened 24 hours) or to another telegraph office . You can order a telephone call or send a fax anywhere. A call to Western Europe is around 20 roubles (0.7$) a minute. For some reason, there are no special 'budget call centers' in Moscow as in some other countries. Another way to phone abroad is to make a collect phone call . In this case, you will not pay for the phone call, but the party you're phoning to will. You can do it by dialing AT&T access number in Moscow (755-5042 or 747-3323), dialing the number you wish to reach, waiting for an operator to answer (English-speaking only) and telling him / her you'd like to make a free phone call to this number. You will need to repeat the number again to the operator, then you'll be connected, the person you're phoning to will be asked if he's willing to pay a phonecall from Russia, and voila. The cheapest way to phone abroad , is to use a special telephone card for IP-telephoning . You can use these cards from any phone in Moscow, even public ones. Just dial the Moscow access number written on the card, switch to the tone mode (usually a * (star) button), dial your PIN and then the number you're calling. There are many companies selling those cards, such as Comstar (Maxicard) or Rinotel, besides they have an English-language menu to explain you what to do while calling. Those cards can be bought either directly from the providers or easier from the telecom shops (sa`lon s`vyazi - usually next to metro stations -- the places where cell phones and accessories are sold). Regarding the prices, IP-cards from MTU cost 150 R ($5) and one minute of speaking with US, Canada, Western Europe costs $0.2. Even if you're calling from a public phone, the phonecall will cost you the same $0.2, plus $0.07 a minute you'll have to pay for the payphone.
You can also buy phonecards online , this way you will be able to use your card instantly. WayToRussia.Net together with MasterBell offers this service to our readers through Way to Russia Budget Phonecards shop. The rates are $0.10 per minute if you call from Moscow abroad, and $0.02 per minute if you call from USA to Russia. The quality is perfect if you use the card from Russia or USA, but don't buy it if you intend to use it in a European country.
Here's a list of some IP telephony providers in Moscow. Rinotel. Address: Sofiyskaya embankment, #30/3, (zamoskvorechie area, south center, metro Tretyakovskaya). Phone: 792-5404, fax 792-5405, internet: www.rinotel.ru e-mail: [email protected] | Comstar. Address: Dmitrovsky pereulok, #3, build. 1. Contacts: tel 956-0000, fax 956-0707, internet: http://www.comstar.ru/
Using Mobile Phones in Moscow
All the operators have the same level of service and about the same prices: about $0.20 for a minute of a local call (incoming or outcoming), and $0.15 mobile to a mobile. Megafon offers calls to Europe and USA for only $0.35 / minute if you subscribe to one of their contract plans (starts from $35 US / month with 200 minutes included). Normally, you will be able to subscribe for a short period of time, because there are no 1-year minimum term contracts in Russia -- you can usually cancel with 1 month notice. To subscribe, you just can go to any telecom shop (there are many), pay a set-up fee ($30-$90) and a deposit $35-$40 which will directly go on your account, and you'll have a new SIM card and phone number. Just make sure your mobile isn't blocked by another provider. Once subscribed, if you want to add money to your account, you can buy a top-up card, which is sold in most shops.
Sending the Post in Russia
If you want to send something by post from Russia, you can do it either through the government post service or a courier service - the difference is the price and speed. State post service. The government post system in the whole Russia is unexpensive, not quality enough and slow, either if you send it inside or outside of Russia. Besides, sometimes the letters don't come at all. It'll be ok in the most cases with the parcels though.
How to send it. You should buy the post stamps at a post office, which you can find by Pochta sign. Post offices usually work monday - friday from 9.00 to 19.00 and saturday - 9.00 to 17.00, sunday is day off. The stamps you need to send a letter to Western Europe will cost around 12 R ($0.5). For that price your letter will arrive in 2-4 weeks. You can send your letter or postcard by putting them at any of the light blue post boxes on the streets or directly at the post office (better). Sending an average (around 500gm) parcel costs around $15 A more secure option is to go directly to the main post office of Moscow - Tsentralny Telegraph (Central Telegraph), it's on Tverskaya ulitsa, #7. It'll cost around $3 to send a letter from there and it'll take 2 weeks for it to arrive.
Courier services. It costs about $50 US to send a letter with a major courier service (see contacts below) from Russia to Europe, and about $70 US to the USA. It should take about 1 to 3 business days to arrive. DHL Express. Address: 8 Marta Ul., #14. Contacts: tel 956-1000, 961-1000, fax 974-2105 internet: http:// www.dhl.ru Federal Express . Common questions
What is winter sports travel insurance.
Taking part in winter sports can carry much higher risks than those you'll face on other types of holiday. It’s important to make sure that, as well as taking part in winter sports safely and responsibly, you have cover in case something goes wrong. This cover also provides protection for things that can happen to your equipment, such as loss, theft or damage.
Why add winter sports cover?
Whether you have your own equipment or you’re hiring it, replacements can be expensive if they have to come out of your pocket. If you're going on a trip involving winter sports, then adding this cover is mandatory. It's not just your equipment that needs to be covered but you as well. We can help you if you’re taken ill while on the mountain or get injured, and if the weather decides to dry up and there’s no snow on the piste, we can help restore the balance.
Isn’t my Ghic or Ehic card enough protection?
UK citizens travelling in EU countries can access some state-provided healthcare there for free or at a reduced cost. You'll need a UK Global Health Insurance Card (Ghic) or, if it’s still in date, a European Health Insurance Card (Ehic).
Remember, neither card covers any additional cost to return you to the UK or for a relative to stay or fly out to be with you. In a medical emergency you may have no control over the hospital you are taken to or the closest hospital may be private. But medical travel insurance may be able to cover some of the cost for you.
Also, Ehic no longer provides access to healthcare services in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland for UK nationals in most cases.
