How to view Hikvision cameras on Safari (with web plugin)

Marco Albertini

Many users want to view their Hikvision cameras or access the DVR/NVR using the Safari browser on a Mac. What plugin to install on Safari? How to see a Hikvision camera or NVR using Safari? You can view the cameras on Safari by installing the Mac web plugin for Hikvision.

In this step-by-step guide, we will show how to access a Hikvision device ( IP camera, NVR, DVR ) using Safari. You’ll be able to see the live feed, playback, modify the settings, etc. For other browsers, read the instructions about viewing the cameras on Google Chrome or Firefox .

How to access a Hikvision device on Safari?

In order to view the Hikvision cameras or NVR/DVR using Safari on a Mac computer, you need to install the Hikvision web plugin made to work on a Mac computer.

Step 1. Install the Hikvision web plugin for Mac. Download it from the Hikvision website or from this google drive link. This plugin supports Mac OS 10.8 or a later version. Please close the web browsers while you are installing the plugin.

Step 2. Open up the Safari browser. Type your NVR’s IP address into the address bar. For our example, since we are connected to the same network, we will use our NVR’s local IP address: http:// 92.168.1.33 .

If it still doesn’t work, try the following:

  • Make sure the iOS of the Mac computer is updated to the latest version. Check it out and the Preference section.
  • Update the Safari to the latest releases. A few versions of older Safari may exhibit problems with the plug-in.
  • Lastly, in a few cases (not so often though) you need to update the firmware on the Hikvsion recorder (or camera). Some units run on buggy firmware and may not show the picture on Safari.

If still no luck, contact Hikvision USA or the seller/dealer from where you purchased the product.

When I tried to install the plug-in, the MAC OS declined to install due to the potential of malware on the software installer. Is there really a risk? I couldn’t find the plug-in on the US HIK Vision site, and your link goes to a Polish developer

' src=

Yes, it’s safe to install it. Hikvision US is forwarding automatically their link to the Polish Hikvision branch. It should work either way. It’s working on my end. Another option is to use the iVMS-4200 software.

I had to use Sea Monkey on Mac OS 10.95 to have the plug-in work. Otherwise the plug-in installs, but the Safari browser indicates it is not installed.

Is the plugin also usable for an Iphone , if this is possible how can i get this in my iphone. I am searching this already a long time but until now zero. Thank you

Knows a LOT of stuff

No, I'm afraid not. If you want to view your cameras via an iOS device, you'd need to use Hikvision's free app for iOS, iVMS 4500

hikvision safari live view

Bob said: One of the best features of an IP camera is the ability to simply view it within your browser. Unfortunately in order to do this though, you need a plug-in called web components. When you try to view your cameras on PC you are prompted with a message notifying you that you need to download the plug-in, however on a Mac, there is no such notification leading users to believe that their Hikvision cameras are faulty or possible not compatible. Now, if you head over to Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology Co. Ltd. you will be able to download the Mac OS Plug-in. Installation is fairly straightforward. Once you have installed the plug in, you should be able to view your cameras within safari. Make sure you have 'Webcomponents' selected from the plug-in list though. Everything should work from this point. If you experience any issues past this point, feel free to ask any questions below. Click to expand...

Hey Miguel, we had the same issue with a customer of us, support told us exactly the same thing -_- We did two things, updating the iOS to the lastest version (here it is Sierra 10.12.6) and in the iVMS Client disable the highlight option (screenshot)

Getting the hang of it

hikvision safari live view

CmdrBond said: As I stated in that thread i have used both IE in compatibility mode, and chrome with the IE Tab extension. I have no issue viewing the feed from the NVR in the web GUI. Just the cameras are not presenting an image. Specifically Internet Explorer Version: 11.523.17134.0 Update Versions: 11.0.1055 (KB4480965) Product ID: 0150-200000-00003-AA459 and Chrome Version 71.0.3578.98 (Official Build) (64-bit) with IE Tab version 12.1.18.1 Click to expand...
CmdrBond said: Update - I have a work-around for now... Chrome and IE only list Webcomponents and Quicktime. I tried installing Quicktime 7, but that had no effect, it's still showing No Plugin Detected for QT Firefox ESR 60 also lists VLC and MJPEG - but WC, QT and VLC all say no plugin detected in Firefox ESR with MJPEG showing a black window with a placeholder icon in the top left corner. So I downloaded Safari 5.1.7 - Safari is no longer supported by Apple for Windows, and is no longer listed on their website, but the download to the exe still works - for those that need it, it can be found here Apple Safari 5 Safari lists the 4 plugins mentioned above. Webcomponents gives the same blank screen Quicktime gives No plugin detected MJPEG gives a blue question mark in the centre of the window BUT for some reason VLC WORKS - so that's good. But I'd rather not have to use Safari at all Click to expand...
CmdrBond said: BUGGER Well that was short lived - it sorts out the Live View. But on the image setting page I have no option to choose the plugin. That is obviously defaulting to WebComponents. So I NEED to get it working. Click to expand...

Going to try that and update. I'll let you know.

OK, this is strange, but I have solved this for my current firmwares (although I am still considering upgrading) My NVR will only show the Live Stream in the Web UI if set to UDP - if it is set to TCP I get a "Live View Failed" pop-up. The cameras, however, will only show the Live Stream if set to TCP - UDP gives the blank screen, HTTP and Multicast give the "Live View Failed" pop-up. Moreover, setting the camera to TCP, while allowing me to live view there, causes the NVR to web UI hang. So once I've made any changes, I have to set it back to UDP.

What is Hik-Connect?

Hik-Connect is both an application and cloud service that connects security products like cameras or NVR to your smartphone, tablet, or computer. Both this service and application is what makes it possible to view your cameras remotely on your devices.

How do I setup Hik-Connect on my mobile device?

First, you need to register for a hik-connect account. You can either go to our  website and register , or you can download the hik-connect application and register. Hik-Connect can be downloaded from the  Apple App Store for iOS and iPadOS , and from our website if you have  Android mobile or tablet . After you have completed the registration you need to sign in to the app using your username and password you created. The last step is to add your device to hik-connect, depending on what type of device you have will determine the steps you need to take to add the device. Use the documents attached to this email and follow the steps to add your device to hik-connect.

How do I setup Hik-Connect on my computer?

If you would like to view your devices such as your cameras or NVR from your computer we have a software program called iVMS-4200 that supports both Windows and Mac. You will need to download and install this software onto your computer. Once you have installed the software you will then need to register for a hik-connect account. You can go to our  website and register if you do not already have an account. The last step is to add your device to Hik-Connect, depending on what type of device you have will determine the steps you need to take to add the device. Use the documents below and follow the steps to add your device to hik-connect.

Other ways to connect:

For advanced users, there is support for Hik-Connect DDNS which is an additional feature of our cloud service that requires port forwarding. Sometimes this service is required to unlock additional features of your product.  Depending on your device type and to unlock some product features you may need to configure Hik-Connect DDNS. Generally, our support is limited to the setup and configuration of our Hik-Connect application and cloud service but if you need to also enable Hik-Connect DDNS you will need to first work with your ISP or IT department for assistance with port forwarding.

Other advanced remote configuration options such as direct WAN IP for web browser access or 3 rd party DDNS services like No-IP and DynDNS are supported in most of our products. These are considered advanced configurations, you may need to contact a 3 rd party support provider for setup.

You know it when you see it: here are some movies that got sex scenes right.

It is a happy coincidence that our "What makes a good sex scene?" episode came out in the same week as Challengers, a film about a romance triangle in the tennis world starring Josh O'Connor, Zendaya and (not pictured) Mike Faist.

What makes a good sex scene? It can be easier spot bad sex, but Aisha Harris, Christina Tucker, Ronald Young, Jr. and I tried to focus on the good this week on Pop Culture Happy Hour. You can listen to our full conversation here. (We didn't originally plan for this episode to run the same week as our episode about Challengers , which is out in theaters now, but it's a happy coincidence, since that film has gotten a lot of attention — probably too much, relative to its other merits — for the sex scenes involving its three leads. It's really very good .)

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'Challengers'

Movie Reviews

Watch a tense romantic triangle play out on the tennis court in 'challengers'.

It's often very obvious when a sex scene is bad, just like when a sex scene in a book is bad. It can get so uncomfortable to watch that you have to leave the room (and not in a way that feels true to the story). One of my personal tells for a bad sex scene is when all I can think about is how hard the actors are trying to persuade me that the characters are having a good time. For example, there has been much good discussion in recent years about Showgirls being a more interesting and competent project than it originally got credit for, but in that one pool scene (if you know it, you know it), all I can see is the effort.

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

Lauren Bacall And The 'Sex? What Sex?' Kind Of Movie Sex

It's not always as clear which scenes are good . That's partly because they serve so many different functions, all of which look different, and all of which can be effective. Furthermore, you don't want to confuse whether a sex scene is used well in a film with whether it's hot to you personally, despite the fact that there is overlap between those considerations.

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

In the 'Last Dance,' Magic Mike leaves his thong-and-dance routine behind

Here's what I mean: When Aisha talks about the sequence near the beginning of Magic Mike's Last Dance , it's not irrelevant that the scene is, to her (and to me), hot. But it also makes sense in the context of the film and the franchise, partly because of the way it sets up the power dynamic between Mike (Channing Tatum) and Max (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike is older now, he knows more, and the way he approaches a lap dance is actually different than in earlier movies.

And not all good sex scenes are hot in the same ways. The one I mentioned in the episode, from the romantic drama Love & Basketball , is sexy, yes. But it's also a scene between young adults (the talented basketball players Monica and Quincy, played by Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps), and as such, it incorporates a tentativeness that's not present in Magic Mike's Last Dance , to say the least. As Ronald pointed out during our discussion, that sex scene is quite different from one that takes place later in Monica and Quincy's relationship, when they're older and know each other better. That certainly feels true to real life, but it's not always reflected in Hollywood films, where I would tentatively estimate that 90% of on-screen sex is more idealized and thus less intimate than real-life sex, in part because it isn't allowed to change over the course of a relationship.

'Like it or not, we live in Oppenheimer's world,' says director Christopher Nolan

Movie Interviews

'like it or not, we live in oppenheimer's world,' says director christopher nolan.

Even further from the hotness of the lap dance scene is Ronald's pick: the imagination of Kitty Oppenheimer (Emily Blunt) running wild in Oppenheimer. While her husband (Cillian Murphy) is being interrogated, she pictures him having sex with his mistress, Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). It goes by quickly enough that it might seem like a Christopher Nolan flourish for flourish's sake, but it serves the purpose of letting you feel her pain over her husband's affair. Her relationship with Robert doesn't look especially romantic in the film, let alone sexually charged; she finds herself consumed by the idea that he was having hot sex with this other woman, and she locks eyes with her vision of a naked Tatlock and finds herself tormented. It's not really the intent of the scene to titillate the audience, just to give specificity to the shape of Kitty's preoccupation with the affair.

What makes a good sex scene?

What makes a good sex scene?

Christina raised another really important point, which is that sex scenes also collide with viewers at very specific moments. Her example from Bound , and the scenes between Violet (Jennifer Tilly) and Corky (Gina Gershon), touches on (among other things) her own history. It's an underappreciated aspect of the sex-in-movies discourse: representation matters in these scenes as much as anywhere else. I always wish I saw more sex scenes in movies that featured a broader variety of body types; it's still really rare to see ones that feature anybody who is even average sized. This is one of the reasons I'm curious about the upcoming season of Bridgerton , which places its focus on the gorgeous and curvaceous Penelope (Nicola Coughlan).

Looking for 'nomance': Study finds teens want less sex in their TV and movies

Good sex scenes are like any other kind of good filmmaking, honestly: it comes down to execution with purpose and care, done relative to whatever the function of the scene might be.

Whether that's spiciness or conflict or relationship growth or (as in the case of Bound ) setting up a steamy neo-noir story that wouldn't be the same if it weren't hot as heck, form follows function, ideally.
