Adventures by Disney River Cruises: Your Questions Answered

' src=

What do you do when you're a Disney fan who wants to sail on a small cruise ship? Adventures by Disney River Cruises are the ideal solution when you're preferring a couple of thousand people less than Disney Cruise Line offers, and you want the Disney touch on a river cruise in Europe.

Families can enjoy all the wonderful things river cruises offer over ocean cruises in this case, but with the Disney brand behind it. This includes things like access to small port cities and a more favorable guest-to-crew ratio – all with the added benefit of the famous name behind the ship's programming.

Adventures by Disney River cruises partnership with AmaWaterways

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) has their own line of cruise ships that thousands of passengers can enjoy, per sailing.

But unlike DCL, Adventures by Disney (ABD) River Cruises are on much smaller ships and they don't have their own fleet. Instead, they partner with AmaWaterways to offer Adventures by Disney on river cruises in Europe.

The ships accommodate just 140 passengers. (Though the ship has more space, it reserves additional cabins for the Adventures by Disney guides that come aboard for Disney-branded sailings.)

How do ABD river cruises differ from other river cruises?

There are several ways these cruises differ from what other cruise lines offer. A lot of their activities are geared towards family-friendly programming, whereas many cruise lines simply have to accommodate adults. Adventures by Disney river cruises cater to both.

For example, you may take a cooking class and bake pastries as a family in Vienna, Austria. Or zipline through the Black Forest in Germany together.

It's also not an accident that many of the itinerary dates coincide with school breaks, like spring break, summer break, or winter break over December's holidays.

They offer menu items for kids we've never seen on another river cruise, like hot dogs, burgers, and mashed potatoes. (We certainly didn't see a single hamburger or hot dog on a menu while enjoying Emerald Destiny RIver Cruise food , another cruise line that sails similar itineraries but is geared towards adults, only.)

Don't be surprised if your Adventure Guides have some great stories to tell about the places you visit; the Disney brand is synonymous with excellent story-telling, which isn't really a focus for other river cruise lines.

What makes AmaWaterways ships “Disney” for an ABD river cruise? What “Disneyfies” the ships?

The AmaWaterways ships don't magically change to the vibrant colors of Disney Cruise Line ships overnight (red, white, and black with a touch of blue and yellow) or grow an iconic stack overnight.

(Though with the magic of Disney we're kind of surprised that Tinkerbell or the Fairy Godmother don't come out to wave their magic wands to make this true.) However, there are small changes that take place to signify you're on a Disney sailing.

For instance, an Adventures by Disney mat welcomes guests onboard instead of an AmaWaterways mat.

Absent are hidden Mickeys (though surely you can find them in everyday design anyhow, right?) and themed restaurants like Animator's Palate, as the Disney Cruise Line ships have.

You will find that they accommodated multigenerational itineraries perhaps more than any other cruise line. And some of their cabins can connect with a door between the two like a lot of hotel rooms (or again, like Disney Cruise Line, offers) which is unusual for a river cruise ship .

Absent are characters autographing books, like Goofy or Mickey Mouse would at the Theme Parks. However, there is a themed night on ABD river cruises, where guests can dress up as their favorite Disney character. It's called “Disneybounding” night.

A small detail we found through our research, which made us smile, is the name tags the Adventure Guides wear. They are the same recognizable shape name tags the cast members wear at Disney Parks and Resorts!

How to book Adventures by Disney river cruises

Since we realize that their partnership with AmaWaterways may be confusing in terms of who you book with, the official word from Adventures by Disney is that you book with Disney or a travel agent.

You can book an Adventures by Disney vacation online at  AdventuresbyDisney.com , or by calling 1-800-543-0865.

You can also contact a travel agent, which is what we do for all our Disney Vacations. (We highly recommend Becca, with Pixie and Pirate Destinations , who is a rock star with any type of Disney vacation planning.) This is at no extra cost to the guests, but with all the perks, not like having to sit on the phone with Adventures by Disney, and often getting an onboard credit.

What rivers does ABD River Cruises sail on?

Adventures by Disney river cruises currently offer sailings on three rivers in Europe : the Rhine, Seine, and Danube.

Each sailing is 8 days and 7 nights.

Generally speaking, these river cruises are heavily focused on their offerings in June and July. Some are offered in September and October. Because Christmas Markets in western Europe are so popular and such an attraction, there are also a few itineraries available in December.

Rhine River

This river cruise begins in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, and ends in Basel, Switzerland, and is aboard AmaLucia or AmaSiena. Visit the Black Forest and a woodworking museum, enjoy learning about the medieval timber homes in the Alsace region of France (which is where the set design for the village in Beauty and the Beast came from), and tour Heidelberg Castle.

Sail to these wonderful cities:

  • Day 1: Basel, Switzerland
  • 2: Strasbourg, France
  • 3: Strasbourg, France
  • 4: Mannheim, Germany
  • 5: Rüdesheim, Germany
  • 6: Cologne, Germany
  • 7: Amsterdam, The Netherlands
  • 8: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

An adults-only Rhine River Cruise: Food and Wine itinerary is offered for two sailings in 2022. This itinerary focuses on tours of breweries, wineries, local pubs and culinary experiences.

Adventures by Disney river cruises are offered during Christmas for the holiday markets along the Rhine River too.

Seine River

This trip starts and ends in Paris. You'll head north at the start of your trip towards the coast of Normandy, where you'll explore towns like Étretat and Honfleur. (Both towns in France are absolutely stunning – we speak from experience!) You'll also explore Vernon and Giverny, made famous by Monet's paintings.

Here is the full port itinerary, which travels on AmaLyra:

  • Day 1: Paris
  • 2: Les Andelys
  • 3: Le Havre
  • 4: Étretat and Honfleur
  • 6: Vernon and Giverny
  • 7: Conflans

In 2022, a Seine River Cruise: National Geographic Photography Sailing is available with this itinerary for three sailings in June and July. They are priced a few hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars more than a regular ABD river cruise per person, depending on the dates you choose.

Danube River Cruise

Travel through four countries as you set sail from Germany to Hungary on AmaLea. You'll enjoy the iconic Wachau Valley, with it's stunning vineyards set amidst hillside towns. You'll have the opportunity to explore castles and charming cities along the “Blue Danube” with this itinerary.

The Danube offers a west and an east itinerary, which travel to the same cities. (They simply start and end in opposite cities.)

  • Day 1: Budapest, Hungary
  • 2: Budapest
  • 3: Bratislava, Slovakia
  • 4: Vienna, Austria
  • 5: Melk, Austria
  • 6: Linz, Austria
  • 7: Passau, Germany
  • 8: Vilshofen, Germany

Oktoberfest sailings are available for two cruises in 2022, for an adults-only itinerary. They're both in September, which is when the famed German Oktoberfest takes place.

They also have special Christmas Markets river cruises on the Danube River.

Adventures by Disney river cruise trip add-ons

If you wish to visit Paris for a few days before your trip, you're able to easily extend your vacation for a longer Adventures by Disney experience. This is what ABD calls their “Pre and Post Cruise Escapes.”

The “Paris Escape” package adds three days in the City of Light. Experience things like dinner at the Eiffel Tower, a guided tour of the Louvre art museum, and a Parisian food tour in the St. Germain neighborhood. Prices start at just under $2,400 per person for this add-on.

Go to Disneyland Paris when you're in town for your ABD river cruise

Don't forget that Disneyland Paris isn't far from the city center. If you add on days in Paris, whether you do it through ABD or other means, and you're a Disney theme park fan, you'll want to add an additional day to go to the park.

To get to Disneyland Paris from the city center, travel 35 minutes by car or train. If you take the train, all you have to do is take it east from Paris's Gare de Lyon station to the Marne-la-Vallée/Chessy train station. Then you simply walk two minutes from the train station to reach the gate to the theme park. It's very simple, just like it is at Tokyo Disney too!

Minimum age to sail on ABD river cruises

Generally speaking, many river cruise lines have a minimum age requirement of 16 or 18 years old to sail with them. Often, these river cruises are considered “adults-only,” whether officially or unofficially.

As a brand that caters to children of all ages, the minimum age requirement for Adventures by Disney river cruises is 4 years old. They do suggest, however, that a child is 8 years old for a river cruise sailing with ABD.

There are exceptions to this, however. One example is when there are adults-only itineraries and for certain times of year (like their Oktoberfest itinerary on the Danube River).

Even if you're on a child-friendly sailing, there are likely to be activities geared towards adults during your family river cruise, like wine tastings and daily cocktail hours.

Is there daycare or childcare onboard Adventures by Disney river cruises?

A lot of what parents love about Disney Cruise Line ocean cruises is that they have an exceptional child care program. That is not the case on Adventures by Disney River Cruises, even though the staff they specifically bring on board to be the Adventure Guides is great with kids.

While they don't have daycare for parents (and kids) to enjoy onboard, the ships are very different from Disney Cruise Line ocean ships. There is not an abundance of pools, multiple restaurants, and activities galore for kids to engage in the same way ocean cruise ships offer. (Though there is one pool onboard AmaWaterways ships for kids to enjoy with ABD river cruises.)

There are times, however, when parents get a break from their children, thanks to the Adventure Guides.

For instance, kids are taken to a different area for dinner so they can eat together with Adventure Guides, while teens eat in another area of the ship. Then the parents are left to enjoy adults-only dinners, just them and other 18+ aged cruisers.

Another example is on some excursions. In Vienna, for example, adults can tour the inside of Schonbrunn Palace, while their kids are outside with the Adventure Guides, navigating a garden maze.

You cannot hire an Adventure Guide to babysit your child outside of these designated times, however.

Kids programming aboard ABD river cruises

You won't find an Oceaneer Club for kids onboard ABD river cruises like you would on a DCL ocean ship. Yet there is some special programming geared towards kids, some of which we mentioned above. One example of both the Adventures by Disney River Cruises and Adventures by Disney Expedition Cruises is the Junior Adventurers night.

This is an evening specifically designed for younger “adventurers” onboard, hosted by the Adventure Guides. Adults can relax elsewhere on the river cruise ship while their children enjoy a separate themed evening.

Teen Programming on ABD River Cruises

Teens are unique cruise guests because they're not kids but not yet adults. They aren't old enough for things like wine tastings, for example.

Disney is sensitive to this! Thus, they created programming on Adventures by Disney river cruises specifically for teens.

For example, a special welcome party for teens helps them get acquainted with each other quickly. There's also a Chef’s Table dinner event for them, as well as separate teen tour groups at various port destinations.

Adults-only Adventures by Disney river cruises

We love that Disney Cruise Line is great for kids, but we really appreciate that they've also considered what Disney Cruise Line is like for adults , sailing without kids, too.

They've considered this for their Adventures by Disney river cruises, just in a different way than their DCL sailings since the ship situation is drastically different.

Certain Adventures by Disney river cruises are adults-only, meaning that they are exclusive to guests 18 years or older.

These include the following itineraries:

  • Certain spring dates for their Seine River Cruise
  • Danube River: Oktoberfest sailings
  • Rhine River Cruise: Food and Wine sailings

During these cruises, tailored enhancements are designed just for adults. Disney has stated that “These dedicated sailings meet the increased demand among adult travelers for Adventures by Disney’s unique blend of sophistication, variety, and adventure in a fun, comfortable setting.”

ABD river cruise cost

On average, ABD river cruise rates are around $5,350, per adult (based on double occupancy), and children are priced at $4,800. These prices do fluctuate and differ depending on the exact itinerary you book, but overall that's the price we've seen most.

As per Adventures by Disney, “The child rate applies to Guests under 12 at the time of travel when accompanied by an adult in the same room.”

If you're a family of two children and two adults, for example, an ABD river cruise can easily cost close to $20,000, before airfare. An ABD river cruise cost is all-inclusive of many things, but the price does not include airfare.

What is included are things like gratuities, beer/wine/soft drinks with lunch and dinner, and at a daily Sip & Sail Cocktail Hour, Wifi, and access to an Onboard Wellness Coach.

Who are Adventure by Disney river cruises for?

This is a unique vacation. In our opinion, it's great for guests who have:

  • A family…
  • Want to sail on a historic river to small towns and villages in Europe as well as some of the popular cities, but don't want to switch hotels every night and figure out logistics…
  • A sizable budget for a river cruise…
  • Children who are old enough to appreciate the destinations and sites you'll be visiting in Europe…
  • Appreciate the Disney brand beyond the characters and graphics. An appreciation for Disney's attention to detail in planning and storytelling is best in this case (this is especially true for the adults-only cruises)…
  • Don't mind a small ship with a good amount of children…

If you're adults without kids who want to experience an ABD river cruise and you don't enjoy the company of children, you may want to consider booking one of the adults-only itineraries, mentioned above.

I Took a Disney Expedition Cruise to Antarctica With My Whole Family — and It Was the Best Trip We've Ever Taken

The Adventures by Disney Antarctica and Patagonia Expedition Cruise was the ultimate family vacation — here's why.

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

adventures by disney expedition cruise guest speakers

Elizabeth Rhodes

Bright and early on the morning of our first full day in Antarctica , L’Austral ’s Captain Fabien’s voice woke us up as it came over our stateroom’s speaker. If we looked outside right now, he said, we’d see a beautiful sea of icebergs floating in the golden sunlight. My sister and I jumped out of bed and stepped onto the freezing balcony, staring in awe as we sailed past giant, water-carved chunks of ice that dazzled in the light. In the distance, we heard a splash and spotted the fins and tails of  humpback whales feeding just a short distance away.

At that moment, the journey down to Antarctica — long-haul flights and a two-day Drake Passage crossing included — was instantly worth it. Next door, my parents were also waking up to the sights of a new day in Antarctica. Over breakfast, my sister and I excitedly told them about the whales we saw from our room that morning. Already, it was one of the best, most memorable family trips we had ever taken — and there was still so much of Antarctica to see.

You might not immediately think " family vacation " when talking about a trip to Antarctica, but tour operators like Adventures by Disney are changing that. The company offers guided group trips — by bus, ship, and even private plane — to destinations across all seven continents, led by Disney Adventure Guides who embody the top-notch customer service Disney is known for. Last year, Adventures by Disney debuted its first-ever Antarctica expedition cruises for the austral summer season (December through March), providing a whole new way to experience the White Continent. My parents, sister, and I went on the Adventures by Disney Antarctica and Patagonia Expedition Cruise this January, and it was the family trip of a lifetime.

Our adventure started when we flew to Buenos Aires and explored the beautiful Argentine capital for a day before joining our Adventures by Disney group to embark on the journey south. (Buenos Aires is well worth a trip on its own. While we did a quick tour independently, Adventures by Disney offers a four-day pre-expedition Buenos Aires Escape to get to know this South American city.)

After leaving Buenos Aires , we flew to Ushuaia on an Adventures by Disney charter plane filled solely with our fellow adventurers. Upon arrival, we went straight to Tierra del Fuego National Park , where we took the train to the End of the World before heading to the ship and settling into our staterooms on Ponant’s L’Austral, our home for the next 11 days.

The next day started with a five-hour catamaran excursion through the Beagle Channel to look for wildlife. We lucked out and saw Magellanic penguins and a lone king penguin — two of six species we saw during our trip. Then, it was back to the ship in Ushuaia for a few hours before our sail away party — and the journey toward the infamous Drake Passage. After weeks of wondering whether we’d get a "Drake Lake" (calm waters) or the notorious "Drake Shake" (rough, seasickness-inducing waters known for their high wave swells), we found ourselves cruising through a Drake Passage that was somewhere in the middle — not too rough, but not super peaceful. On board L’Austral , we stayed busy during the crossing with plenty of Disney guide-led activities, including photo contests, naturalist talks, Marvel movies, and pajama parties.

After a speedy Drake Passage crossing, we reached Antarctica early, tacking on a half day to our scheduled four days on and around the continent. We first arrived at Port Foster in the caldera of Deception Island and geared up (in layers plus the parka and boots provided for us) for our first inflatable Zodiac boat ride into Antarctic waters.  After a short ride from the ship, we stepped onto a stunning black-sand, snow-covered island that remains an active volcano. With our ship naturalists and Adventure Guides leading the way, we explored this remote island in groups (with never more than 100 people ashore at any one time) before everyone was back on board for the evening.

Each day in Antarctica followed the same routine: We’d wake up and open our blackout curtains to see what breathtaking scenery was outside. Then, we'd eat a quick breakfast in the casual buffet or sit down for a leisurely meal at the more sophisticated table-service restaurant. After eating, we'd embark on a morning excursion with our assigned group (guests are divided into four groups of 30 to 45, so there were never too many people off the ship at any given time). When it was another group’s turn for an excursion, we'd hang out on board, enjoying the ship’s amenities such as the pool, spa, and main lounge. All of the groups would be back on board in time for lunch before the ship relocated for an afternoon excursion.

At 6 p.m. every night, all of the guests would meet in the theater to hear from our naturalist team. They would talk about the wildlife, environment, and landscapes we experienced that day and tell us what was in store for tomorrow. Then, our Disney Adventure Guides would go over the entertainment schedule and any logistics for that evening and the following day. After the presentations, we went to dinner at either of the two restaurants and spent the rest of the evening at the Adventure Guide-organized activity (bingo, karaoke, and the "I Survived the Drake Passage" party were among the highlights). Alternatively, when we wanted a relaxing evening, we spent time at one of the lounges on board; the forward Observation Lounge on the sixth floor was our favorite spot for a nightly cocktail with Antarctic views.

The most exciting part of any Antarctic cruise — and the main reason anyone would brave the Drake Passage — is the opportunity to explore a continent so few humans ever get to see firsthand. Our experiences ranged from thrilling Zodiac rides among icebergs and glaciers to wonderful wildlife encounters with whales and penguins to tours of historic buildings left from early Antarctic explorations.

On one particularly stunning blue-sky day, we visited penguin colonies, hiked up to overlooks with views of glaciers and snow-covered mountains, checked out historic Port Lockroy, and met the first all-female staff of the Antarctic post office. We even had time for a dip in the ship’s heated pool — surrounded by Antarctica’s pristine natural beauty — before getting ready for dinner.

On another scenic but cold and snowy day, we set off on a Zodiac cruise excursion. To be honest, we didn’t have the highest expectations; weather conditions prevented us from making a landing this time, so we would just cruise around the ship. We set off in our Zodiac to search for wildlife, and within minutes, humpback whales were swimming around our boat and several others. One whale swam straight toward our boat with his dorsal fin sticking out of the water, diving down right before it looked like he would hit us. Moments later, a minke whale passed a mere few feet in front of us, lifting its head and fins above the water in yet another close encounter. Our naturalist guide said he had never been so close to a whale.

Soon, our guide got a call from the ship asking those on the water to identify a single penguin that had been spotted on a nearby iceberg. When we got close enough to see it, we noticed it was a famed emperor penguin — a rare sight in this part of Antarctica. As we admired the solo penguin standing tall on a massive blue iceberg, we heard a thunder-like noise in the distance and watched as ice calved off a nearby glacier. We sat in excited shock at our trifecta of Antarctic experiences, covered in snow that had fallen during our short but thrilling excursion. As if the moment could get any better, our naturalist guide suggested my family make a little snowman on the front of the Zodiac using the fresh snow that gathered in the boat, and we did.

Antarctica is truly a once-in-a-lifetime destination . Most travelers won’t go more than once, so make that one time count. That starts with picking the operator that best fits your travel style and interests, and Disney’s Antarctica experience surprised us. This isn’t your typical Disney cruise. It’s not even on a Disney ship — the company works with luxury small-ship cruise line Ponant and uses their sophisticated expedition vessels for these Adventures by Disney sailings. You won’t find Mickey on board — except in the form of a freshly baked French pastry — but this experience is Disney in all the right ways.

The Disney experience starts before the journey even begins with a pre-trip package delivered to our homes. Filled with fun items like Disney hats, luggage straps, water-resistant backpacks (a must for Antarctic expeditions), and specially designed Disney pins for each day of the trip, this package set the tone for the experience. During the trip, there are thoughtful touches, from stamped postcards to send from an Antarctica post office to a Champagne toast on our final Zodiac cruise; they truly thought of everything.

Of course, Adventures by Disney is family focused with typical Disney entertainment throughout the trip: Disney movies, Disney Cruise Line-style bingo, karaoke, and nighttime dance parties are all part of a schedule that’s fun for all ages. Our fellow cruisers included school-aged kids (note that Junior Adventurers have to be at least 10 to join this trip), young adults, retirees, and everyone in between. The Disney Adventure Guides made sure it was a fun, inclusive experience with something for everyone.

To those unfamiliar with Adventures by Disney, the fact that you can experience Antarctica — the most remote, extreme continent — with Disney might be surprising. Antarctica isn’t a typical family vacation — and that’s exactly why I’m so happy I went on an Adventures by Disney expedition with mine. It’s a life-changing destination packed with experiences that can’t be replicated and we’ll remember for years to come. We bonded over Drake Passage seasickness, hiked up frozen hills alongside penguins, basked in the midnight sun, and toasted our White Continent adventure with Champagne while floating beside a glacier. And honestly, it’s going to be tough for the next family trip we take to compete.

ADVENTURES BY DISNEY ANTARCTICA & PATAGONIA EXPEDITION CRUISE

Adventures by Disney Ponant in Antarctica

Adventures By Disney is finally setting sail to the elusive seventh continent: ANTARCTICA! This expedition cruise is sure to satisfy your cravings for adventure, as you explore the dramatic landscapes and unique wildlife of ‘The Ice.’ And since you’ll be traveling with Adventures By Disney, you can expect a hassle-free, family-friendly, luxury trip full of the magical touches that only Disney can provide.

Day 1: Arrive in Buenos Aires

Touch down in Buenos Aires, the capital and largest city in Argentina. After a smooth 40-minute transfer to the Sofitel Buenos Aires Recoleta Hotel*, you’ll have an opportunity to meet your Adventure Guides. Take some time to settle into your spacious room and answer some emails using the complimentary WiFi before heading out to explore the city. The hotel is conveniently located across the street from the Patio Bullrich shopping mall and only a block away from Avenida Alvear, a district known for its French architecture, international luxury shops, and art galleries. If venturing off on your own sounds intimidating, we suggest talking to your Adventure Guides — they’ll be happy to provide recommendations and directions. But be sure to get some rest because your adventure officially begins tomorrow!

*If you just can't get enough adventure and are looking to experience some additional South American culture before embarking on your Expedition Cruise, consider adding on the  4-day Escape to Buenos Aires (more info coming soon) . Pre-trip accommodations will differ if you choose to book this add-on.

Day 2: Fly to Ushuaia and Board the Ship

Fuel up with breakfast at the hotel before transferring to Aeroparque Jorge Newberry for your flight to Ushuaia. Your day bag is the only thing you’ll have to worry about, since the rest of your luggage will be magically transported from your hotel room without you having to lift a finger (one of the many perks of traveling with Adventures by Disney). Located between the Andes Mountains and Beagle Channel, Ushuaia is home to the 160,000 acre Tierra del Fuego National Park. The lush forests, mountains, and lakes provide a stunning backdrop for the morning’s activities — a ride on the End of the World Train, the world’s southernmost functioning railway, and a scenic nature walk to the End of the World Post Office, where you can send a postcard to friends and family. After lunch in a semi-private dining area with lake views, it's time to head to the ship!

adventures by disney expedition cruise guest speakers

After boarding the majestic ship (either Le Boreal or Le Lyrial, depending on your departure date), you’ll have an opportunity to settle into your stateroom and explore your new home for the next 10 nights (see “Accommodations” for more details about the ships). You’ll receive a special shipboard welcome and orientation, and then make your way to one of the two onboard restaurants for dinner at your leisure. Enjoy the onboard nighttime entertainment, or head back into town for an optional evening walk or pub crawl (21+).

Day 3: Ushuaia & At Sea

Enjoy breakfast on the ship (Freshly-baked pastries, anyone?), and then choose from four options for your day in Patagonia: Option A: Catamaran Excursion, Haberton Settlement Tour, and lunch at the Settlement restaurant; Option B: Husky Kennel Visit, Haberton Settlement Tour and Catamaran Excursion with lunch on the catamaran; Option C: Haberton Settlement Tour and Catamaran Excursion with lunch on the catamaran; Option D: On-your-own time and lunch in Ushuaia or on the ship. The Husky Kennel Visit includes an opportunity to play with husky pups and is sure to be a hit for kids and adults alike. On the tour of the Haberton Settlement, a former mission founded in 1886, you’ll explore museums featuring historic sheep-shearing, wooden boats, and native marine mammals, as well as take a scenic nature walk through a private nature reserve. The three-hour Catamaran Sail provides a more laid-back tour with the opportunity to see birds, sea lions, and penguin colonies! The variety of itineraries offers the flexibility to tailor your experience to your interests and desired activity level, whether that be a day full of guided tours or time to explore independently.

Afterwards, return to the ship for the Sail Away Party as you wave goodbye to Argentina and set sail into the Drake Passage, the body of water between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula. Eat dinner in either of the ship’s restaurants and enjoy the nighttime entertainment, or order room service and watch a movie from the comfort of your bed (because why not?).

Days 4 & 5: Drake Passage

Waters in the Drake Passage can be extremely rough, calm, or somewhere in between, depending on the weather and sea conditions at the time. If you are prone to seasickness (and even if you aren’t), we recommend anti-nausea medication. There will be a physician on board to take care of any medical needs that arise. Many activities are planned for these sea days, but they are subject to change depending on the conditions. Some of the activities include: Meet the Naturalists (for the December sailing: Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President: Animals, Science and Environment for Disney Parks, Experiences and Product; for the January sailing: a Disney photographer), Ship Tour and Bridge Visit, Wildlife Viewing, Photography Tips and Tricks, Fitness Classes and Spa Treatments (additional fee applies for spa services), Iceberg Spotting Contest, and the “I Survived the Drake Passage Party.”

You’ll also have several Exploration Preparation Sessions, including a parka and boot distribution (the parka is yours to keep!), IAATO and Zodiac briefings (IAATO is the organization which oversees environmentally-responsible travel to Antarctica; Zodiac boats are heavy-duty inflatable boats which are used for land excursions), and decontamination sessions (All Adventurers are required to decontaminate their outer layer of clothing on the first day at sea. Boot scrubbings are required before and after each land excursion.).

Evening activities provide fun for all ages — a Disney movie night for Junior Adventurers, cocktail making for adults, and Trivia Night for the whole family. This is one of the things we love about Adventures by Disney — every age group is sure to find something they like!

Days 6-9: Antarctic Peninsula

Welcome to ANTARCTICA! After surviving the Drake Passage crossing, you’ll be rewarded with four incredible days of icy adventures. Spontaneity is key here — so much is dependent on the ice and weather conditions each day. But because you’re traveling with Adventures by Disney, you don’t have to worry about figuring that out for yourself. Daily itineraries will be shared during the previous evening’s Adventure Awaits theater program and in the daily program distributed to your stateroom each night.

Each day will ideally consist of two excursions — one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You may embark on a Zodiac boat, in which you’ll zoom across the waters in search of a majestic Orca whale or a towering iceberg. You can step foot on the 7th continent and hike across the icy terrain to hilltops with stunning panoramic views. Or walk right through a penguin colony to observe these unique creatures in their natural habitat. For an additional fee, you can even go on a premium kayaking excursion to get an up-close experience with the wildlife and icebergs. (Space is extremely limited and fills up quickly, so be sure to talk to your My Path Unwinding travel advisor if you are interested. Minimum age is 16.)

adventures by disney expedition cruise guest speakers

The fun continues back onboard the ship where you’ll have many activities to choose from. Unwind from the day’s adventures on deck with a mug of warm hot chocolate while your Junior Adventurers participate in an “I Speak Whale” contest. Take a dip in the heated saltwater pool, or relax at Tea Time with Music and Games in the lounge.

Days 10-11: Drake Passage

Spend your final days at sea reliving your Antarctic adventures. Look out for wildlife with the help of your Adventure Guides’ sharp eyes. Swap photos and exchange contact information with your fellow Adventurers who now feel like family. Sneak in another massage, because this is a vacation after all. On your last night, enjoy a special farewell reception .

Day 12: Ushuaia and Buenos Aires

After your final breakfast onboard, you’ll disembark the ship and transfer to Ushuaia airport. You’ll fly from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires, and then home.

Escape to Buenos Aires:  Optional Pre-Adventure Add-On

Check into the Alvear Icon Hotel, located in the Puerto Madero waterfront district. Enjoy scenic views of the city’s historic quarter and Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve, and even catch a glimpse of Uruguay! Meet your fellow Adventurers at the Welcome Reception, which includes an opportunity to make your own empanadas and cocktails before enjoying a traditional Argentine steak dinner.

After breakfast at the hotel, embark on a privately guided city tour with stops at Plaza de Mayo, the city’s oldest public square, the Recoleta Cemetery, considered one of the most unusual cemeteries in the world (most of the graves are built above ground), and the vibrant La Boca neighborhood. Enjoy lunch at El Gran Paraiso in La Boca, and then continue your day with a coach tour through San Telmo on the way to La Ventana. There, you’ll get to experience a private tango demonstration and class. After, you are free to explore with an evening and dinner on your own.

Fuel up with breakfast at the hotel, and then relax on a scenic ride through the pampas grassland region on the way to San Antonio de Areco. You’ll get a much-needed cup of Argentinian coffee at a historic cafe, and then explore the Las Lilas de Arceo Museum, which displays the art of Florencio Molina Campos, a personal friend of Walt Disney. Then, you’ll visit Estancia El Ombu de Areco, a cattle and horse ranch, where you’ll be served drinks and empanadas and participate in horseback riding and carriage rides. Lunch will be an authentic Argentine barbecue. Yes, you’ve done all of those things, and it's only lunchtime — that is how Adventures by Disney rolls. After lunch, some gauchos will perform some folkloric music and dance. Enjoy some on your own time at the Estancia before your private farewell dinner at the hotel.

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, and then transfer to the airport to meet up with the rest of your fellow Adventurers before beginning your Antarctica & Patagonia Expedition Cruise.

Ships:  Le Boreal  or  Le Lyrial

Adventures By Disney has partnered with PONANT , a leader in luxury yacht expeditions, to provide a unique way to experience Antarctica. Le Boreal and Le Lyrial combine luxury with intimacy and serenity for a yacht-like feel. In contrast to ocean or river vessels, these ships are specifically designed to navigate the unique Antarctic landscape, allowing exclusive access to remote areas. For the expedition departing on December 20, 2021, guests will sail on Le Boreal . For the expedition departing on January 30, 2022, guests will sail on Le Lyrial . The two ships are nearly identical, with a few small differences in decor and room size.

All staterooms have a king-sized bed or two twin beds, balcony, minibar, flat screen TV (including more than 60 movies in multiple languages), bluetooth speaker, desk, safe, and Hermés bath products. Unlimited WiFi and 24 hour room service are included. A pillow menu is available to maximize guest comfort and personalization. Laundry service (washing and ironing) is provided for an additional fee.

Room categories range from the Deluxe Stateroom (200 square feet, very similar in size to a Deluxe Inside stateroom on the Disney Dream or Fantasy) to the coveted Owner’s Suite (484 square feet on Le Boreal and 581 square feet on Le Lyrial, about twice the size of a regular Deluxe Family Ocean View stateroom on the Disney Dream or Fantasy)**. Guests traveling Deck 6 suites receive complimentary butler service. But with less than 200 passengers on each sailing, every guest can expect to receive outstanding service, no matter their room category.

Both ships have multiple lounges and bars, a theater, a wellness area with a spa and fitness studio, a recreation area/ kids club equipped with a Wii and PS4, a heated saltwater pool, and a library stocked with books, board games, and computers. The free unlimited WiFi is satellite-based, so connection is available through most regions, even very isolated areas. Each ship also has two restaurants — an elegant gastronomic restaurant and grill restaurant with a more relaxed atmosphere.

Breakfast is served from 6:30 to 10:30 AM, and may consist of freshly-baked pastries, breads, and muffins, pancakes, waffles, eggs, cheeses, cold cuts, and juices. Lunch is typically served buffet-style, and consists of salads, vegetables, meat and fish, desserts, and pastries themed each day (Mediterranean, Asian, barbecue, etc.). An afternoon snack (Tea Time) of sweet treats and cold or hot drinks is served around 4 pm. You can enjoy dinner in either of the two restaurants at your leisure. There is an open bar with unlimited complimentary beverages served at any time of day (excluding premium alcoholic drinks). Special menus are available for those with dietary restrictions (low-fat, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc.). Disney is known for being extremely accommodating to allergies and dietary restrictions, and this Expedition is no different.

** Pricing subject to change depending on stateroom category.

The spacious rooms offer stunning views of the city and river, along with a workspace and free WiFi. *If participating in the Escape to Buenos Aires add-on, pre trip accommodations will be at the Alvear Icon Hotel. Guests who are not participating in the add-on experience will stay at the Sofitel Buenos Aires Recoleta Hotel.
