Omujeve Hunting Safaris is run by the Kruger family, whose tenure in Namibia goes back five generations, and who are passionate hunters themselves. Our team of passionate fulltime professional hunters will ensure you get the kind of one-on-one attention that will make your trip truly memorable.
GUIDE TO HUNTING IN NAMIBIA
Find everything you need to plan your next African Hunting Safari.
OMUJEVE TROPHY HUNTS
Trophy hunting is our speciality, and we’ll make sure that you bag the species of your choice, be it a predator, plains game or any of the big five..
Omujeve Hunting Safaris has three unique lodges and free range concessions spanning the length and breadth of Namibia
FOR THE BEST EXPERIENCE OF YOUR LIFE.
Whether it’s a hunting or photographic safari you’re after, we’ll strive to fulfil your every desire, from wish list to bag list.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
More than just your run of the mill hunting lodge.
If you want to get away from it all, we offer you an African camping experience bar none. And we do it in style: our luxury tented camps, one in northwestern Namibia and the other in the Caprivi, provide all the facilities and amenities your heart could desire. All you have to do is sit back and relax. There’s nothing quite like a crackling campfire, the distant roar of a lion and a star-lit African sky after an exciting day’s hunt.
For those who prefer to do their shooting with a camera, we offer splendid game drives from Omujeve Lodge, through one of the most starkly beautiful places in the world, where you can see nature at its most awe-inspiring. Wildlife on our 11 000-hectare property is a big viewing attraction, but the landscapes, birdlife and plantlife of Namibia are every bit as breathtaking. Because we never hunt from our vehicles, we are able to treat you to very close encounters in the rawest and most beautiful of Africa’s environments.
For those who wish to dip their toes back into city life – or for spouses or children who would like to be kept entertained while one family member hunts – we offer tailored tours to Windhoek. This vibrant city offers a wealth of shopping opportunities, and plenty to see and do.
A favourite activity for kids (of all ages!) is our angling trips to the West Coast Recreational Area at Swakopmund on the Atlantic Ocean. Here, budding junior anglers and those with more experience can cast for gamefish and sharks (catch-and-release), at sea or from the shore.
With parental approval and permission, our professional hunters are willing to work with children, teaching them how to handle and fire a rifle. They start with a .22 and, if appropriate, may work their way up to higher-calibre guns.
The dining room with its bar, entertainment area, and generous verandah is the perfect place to unwind after a busy day. All meals, lovingly and expertly prepared by a team of chefs trained by prize-winning foodie Elsada Kruger, will linger in your memory long after the last bite has been savoured. We specialise in game dishes, and use organically homegrown ingredients harvested from our farm.
HUNTING GALLERY
Luxurious accommodation and world-class cuisine.
paired with an unequalled game selection and one-on-one professional hunter interaction will add up to the African safari of a lifetime.

A truly African experience
Experience wilderness while hunting.
Land of The Brave
Namibia, our beautiful country, hunting should serve conservation, conserve the african dream.
First Class Hunting in Namibia
Jan Oelofse Hunting Safaris, our experienced and passionate team of professional hunters, will provide you with one of the best hunting experiences in Namibia and all of Africa. We are a family-run operation, established by the famous conservationist Jan Oelofse and his family in Namibia in 1975. Since the passing of this great man, our beloved husband, father, entrepreneur, inventor, artist, mentor and friend to many, the Oelofse family Annette and Alex with Carola, are carrying on the legacy he left behind. Our hunts are customized to accommodate the expectations of hunters from various backgrounds and ages, we welcome families with children, bow-hunters and disabled hunters alike. Being above all passionate conservationists, our dream is to offer hunts such to naturally sustain the environment and all its animals, with the interest of the current and the future generations of animals and hunters at heart. In Jan Oelofse’s words, our aim is to: “Always give back more to nature than you take out.” We invite you to experience exactly that which our forefathers called Africa!
Jan Oelofse Legacy Award
The Jan Oelofse Legacy Award has been offering hunts annually to disabled hunters since 1992, including 10 trophy animals, daily rates and skinning.
Previously, this award was part of the SCI Pathfinder Award, but unfortunately it was decided to no longer include this opportunity at the SCI events.
We have wholeheartedly chosen to continue this legacy in the name of conservationist Jan Oelofse, who was the founder of our outfit, and the initiator behind this award many years ago. Our facilities are fully equipped to cater for disabled hunters, offering hunts to outdoorsmen and women in wheelchairs, from lightly disabled candidates to quadriplegics. Our professional hunter Rudie de Klerk is exceptionally experienced in guiding these hunts, having suffered and recovered from a disability inflicted by an elephant attack some time ago. The recipients of this award have often found this experience life-changing, and have given us the opportunity to meet extraordinarily inspirational people, who have succeeded against the odds. It would be our greatest honour and privilege to continue hosting hunters who deserve to be rewarded for continuing a shared passion for the outdoors.

Testimonials
Kowas is the perfect hunting adventure safari location for families!
I didn’t come to Namibia expecting to return for another hunt in future, but that has changed – I will definitely be back! I enjoyed my time both on the hunt and off the hunt. Thank you for the excellent food, hunting, learning and memories. I will never forget my experience at Kowas.
This is my 3rd hunting trip to Africa – It was an outstanding safari! Top level service, hospitality and hunting resulted in outstanding emotions during this safari. The best place in Namibia for perfect hunting!
Outstanding safari! Lots of game and a truly challenging hunt, led by expertise PH’s. Kowas offers a high-quality, customized experience which is head-and-shoulders above the “fast food hunting: offered by the large corporate “safari factories” in other places.
We did not dream of seeing so much game! This has been above and beyond a trip of a lifetime for us. We’ll forever cherish our memories of Kowas. Amazing trophies. We will be back.
Ever since I was a kid, I dreamt bout coming to Africa. I read every book by Peter Hathaway Capstick and becoming more fascinated with Africa. Coming to Kowas was truly an experience of a lifetime. This was magical. Thank you for the phenomenal experience. Can not wait to be back.
I have hunted with other outfits in the past but nothing compares with the excellent attention and experience that the Strauss family offers. Thank you for allowing me to fulfil a dream and an experience of a lifetime!
We keep on coming back – and will return again. You have perfected the art of creating memories to cherish for a lifetime.
Our second trip to hunt with Kowas Adventure Safaris was just as impressive as the first. Great hunting, beautiful accommodations, and creating friendships that will last forever. We look forward to out next trip with Kowas.
2022 was the first African Safari for my oldest son and I. We had our best adventure together! We harvested many great trophies but had no idea we would make a new family in Namibia. We were blown away by the camp, the staff and the hunting. Already planning for 2024!
My wife and I had our first trip to Africa, and we are glad we chose Namibia and Kowas Adventure Safaris. From the moment we started planning the trip prior to Covid 19, to the day we left Kowas to fly home, the entire staff was always responsive and helpful. Danie, Ansie, Jacques, Elleni and Matheus made us feel part of the family. We experienced genuine friendship at Kowas. Kowas is not only run as a successful business but also as a passionate way of life for the Strauss Family and all the Kowas staff.
It is impossible for me to appropriately articulate the amount of gratitude I have for the Strauss family and the entire Kowas team. Their approach to client service was warm, welcoming, and caring. It’s rare to find such genuine people, and we’re incredibly fortunate that they are now part of our lives.
When it comes to finding and successfully hunting big free-range kudu bulls, PH Jacques Strauss has no equal. With nearly a half-million acres of prime free-range kudu habitat in his concession and a lifetime of passion for the species, Jacques will find you the bull of your dreams. I’m convinced he’s part kudu himself.
We had an amazing time during our Honey Moon Safari at Kowas, the service was next level, the trophies outstanding and the experience unbelievable! We can’t wait to go back!
My first experience in Africa was with Kowas and after other trips to Africa it is still by far the best experience I have had. The hospitality of the Strauss Family is second to none. They strive to make your experience the best available through their impeccable attention to detail, trophy quality and generous spirits.
I couldn’t have imagined a better first African hunting Safari. Thank you Kowas for an incredible adventure and amazing hospitality!
I can not express what a life changing time we had. The hunt experience and magnificent game would always be cherished.
I've been with Kowas 15 times, and looking forward to 15 more. I booked for the Bwabwata National Park with Kowas in July ‘23 for my 80th birthday celebration. I have conducted 38 trip to Africa - and have not met anyone better.
I can’t say enough positive things about all the staff at Kowas! Matheus and Jacques were great introductions to hunting with PHs in Africa, and we were all in awe of their capability to spot/stalk/track/answer any questions about any animals we saw. Danie, Ansie, and Elleni were wonderful company at every delicious meal and explained numerous traditions and customs in Namibia. All of the staff, including the chefs, drivers, skinners, and housekeeping were extremely friendly, polite, and catered to everything we could have asked.
This was my 5th trip to Kowas. It was the best African hunt/tour trip ever! The touring, hunting, meals, and accommodations were superb. The hospitality extended to us by the whole Strauss family was exceptional. Jacques and Matheus do their best to get you the animals you are hunting. Every visit to Kowas had new additions to the camp making it bigger and better. Mahango camp and staff were excellent too. Thank you for the memorable experience. Hard to believe it has been 19 years since our first hunt at Kowas.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful home and providing the best hunt ever!!!
I have had the opportunity to hunt with Kowas 3 times and have taken numerous world class trophies. Although this is probably testimonial enough, the biggest compliment that I can pay them is the feedback of the people I recommend to trust Kowas with their safari. In all of the instances I have sent my friends and colleges to Kowas, they all have come back extremely happy. Whether it is the hunting, the hospitality or the overall experience, they all book again.
What we have experienced here at Kowas, was perfection in every way. We had successful hunts, great trophies and we met a lot of nice people. We will be back.
This was the 5th trip to Africa, and the best African hunt/adventure ever!! The hunting, meals and accommodation were wonderful. The hospitality extended to us by the whole Strauss family, were exceptional. They make you feel at home. We are already planning a next trip to Kowas. Thank you for a wonderful experience.
We will never forget the times spend at Kowas. We will always cherish the excitement of the hunts and then the moments by the campfire. Thank you for allowing us the chance to be part of the family, thanks to all the staff. The wonderful trophies are icing on the cake.
This was my 3rd trip to Kowas. The first two trips, I came with my father. As always, this father-and-son hunting was excellent and exciting. My 15-year-old son was amazed by the wildlife and the African experience in general as it is such a departure from our everyday life. The staff was friendly and helpful. We were always treated like a member of the Strauss family. We are so thankful for the opportunity to experience Africa in this way. I will cherish this trip with my son for the rest of my life and will always remember what Jacques taught us in the field.
The Kowas experience has been truly an outstanding one. This was my first hunt with Kowas and the 4th hunt in Africa. The hunting experience was truly outstanding. The Mahango camp and staff were excellent as was the Kowas location. The level of care, attention, and assistance provided by the Strauss family through the entire process, was outstanding.
This was the first trip and safari to Africa. It was the most amazing two weeks we could imagine. Everything exceeded our already high expectations. Our time together was tremendous. The hunting was better than I could possibly have imagined; amazing, with exceptional trophies taken. The accommodation was comfortable. The meals were delicious. It was a hunter’s paradise. We enjoyed the evening campfires and comradery. We are grateful for the way we were treated. We think about our trip often and we still talk about it daily. See you soon again.
While the place is magnificent, the hunting extraordinary and the camp an oasis, it is you, the Strauss Team and Staff who we will treasure the most. Thank you for making our father-and-son trip to Namibia so very special by harvesting unique trophies. We pray it will only be the beginning of a lifetime friendship. Your delivery of an experience was characterized by: integrity, clear communication, a warm sense of humour, generosity, unpretentiousness, and family.
We not only made memories for a lifetime but new friends for a lifetime as well. Kowas will be the place to introduce the kids to Africa. I re-read my journal all the time, reliving those great memories of the hunt, great trophies harvested, and the time spent in camp with Kowas.

"If you've read anything on African hunting you've been exposed to the wit and prose of Robert Ruark. The highest compliment I can pay to Zana Botes would be to liken him to Harry Selby in "Use Enough Gun". I have been on twenty safaris in sub Saharan Africa, in 5 different countries, and never have I had a PH more in line with the professional hunters of old. Zana will tell you what he expects from you, what his game plan is in regards to the game being hunted, and will then proceed to coordinate the efforts of those involved in an attempt to achieve success. He does what he says he'll do and is a man of his word- all done with a wicked sense of humor, a commitment to maintaining the true ethics of hunting, and a quiet demeanor that facilitates a positive experience even if a shot is not taken. If you hunt with this man you will experience African hunting the way it is supposed. I believe not only will you come away richer for the experience but you will have engaged in the sport as it should be, ethical and proper with the game given the respect it deserves.."
- Donald “Skip” Huston
Thank you again for a wonderful hunt. Ian really enjoyed the stories of the hunt, the pursuit, and the harvest. He has gone through your photos and our phone photos. Lots of good talk and sharing. We loved Namibia and Zana Botes Safaris.

“These guys are a team and can track!!! I’ve hunted all my life and witnessed so much these last two weeks that I wish I learned 40 years ago. Covid is not an issue in the bush, travel is no problem, I feel sorry for people who don’t follow their dream and have an experience of a lifetime. I left my footprints in the dust!”
- Stephan Ira
The hunting experience my young boys and I had with Zana was simply excellent. Whilst we have been hunting in Namibia many times already, Zana made our safari very special. Zana is an excellent and very patient PH whose only leitmotif is ethical and sustainable hunting and he makes no compromise on this. My shooting performance was quite poor the first few days, but he restored my confidence that then all shots were well placed. Only very few PHs have this skill.
We benefited from Zana's educational commitment sharing his knowledge about Namibia, wildlife conservation and farming. My boys learned that game and habitat management are 99% of hunting and pulling the trigger is only 1%. Fabulous accommodation and food. The latter deserves at least one Michelin star.
Finally, Zana's trackers and guides also meet the highest standards of ethical hunting.

How is Hunting impacting wildlife in Africa
By Cameron Hopkins
Even the most ardent bunny-huggers can’t deny what hunting does for wildlife. In a headline about the current state of wildlife in Africa, Conde Nast Traveler begrudgingly and sarcastically proclaimed, “Perhaps the best way to save wildlife in Africa is to kill it.” It’s true, undeniably so. You could almost hear the Conde Nast editor’s fingernails screech across her keyboard as she was forced to acknowledge that, yes, African wildlife is thriving because of hunting. The plain fact is that Africa is a developing continent with a largely rural population that must, for lack of an alternative, derive virtually all of its revenue from natural resources. According to the World Bank, 60 percent of the Sub-Saharan African population lives on less than $1 per day.
African governments have increasingly recognized wildlife as a precious natural resource that can be managed through sustained-utilization, which is to say, hunting. Even more telling, some African countries have tried bans on hunting. There are two examples of this: Kenya and Tanzania. Tanzania closed hunting in 1973 and reopened it in 1978 after poaching reduced its elephant population by over half. Once hunting reopened, the elephant rebounded to a current population around 125,000. In 1977 Kenya banned hunting and has never reopened it. The costs have been staggering. According to the African Conservation Foundation, 70 percent of Kenya’s wildlife outside national parks has been poached out. Kenya’s elephants fared even worse: between 1979 and 1989, the elephant population fell from 130,000 to 17,000.
Benefits Of Hunting: What does hunting provide? Two things: money and oversight. As we noted, rural Africans are poor and must eke a living from whatever means are most expeditious. Safari companies provide long-term employment to rural Africans. There are the immediate and obvious jobs, such as working in a hunting camp, but there are also anti-poaching teams, bridge and road building crews and game scouts who all derive a livelihood from hunting. In Zimbabwe, hunting elephants alone generates $15 million a year, according to George Pangeti of the Zimbabwe Parks Department. And continent-wide, approximately $77 million will be generated from the 1,540 quota of hunted elephant set by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) for 2010.
In the 2007 hunting season in South Africa, 16,394 foreign hunters spent $91 million, according to the South African Professional Hunters Association. The association estimates that 70,000 jobs are created by South Africa’s game-ranching industry. In 2010, district councils in Tanzania will receive $600,000 as their share of hunting license revenues from the 2009 season, according to The Citizen, a newspaper in Dar es Salaam.
The monetary benefit of hunting flows to district councils in Zimbabwe through its much-heralded program called CAMPFIRE (Communal Areas Management Program for Indigenous Resources). Through CAMPFIRE, the actual local villages and communes benefit directly from the revenues generated by hunting licenses and trophy fees. Also, safari operators have a vested interest in policing their areas to prevent commercial poaching. There are two kinds of poaching in Africa, meat-poaching, which is endemic to the culture and largely benign if kept under control, and then there is the commercial poaching conducted by organized criminal gangs for profit. These gangs focus on ivory and rhino horn, both of which are smuggled primarily to buyers in Asia and the Middle East.
Government agencies simply don’t have the resources to combat commercial poachers, and widespread corruption is simply a fact of life in Africa. In Kenya, Exhibit A in the case for hunting, systematic gangs of ivory poachers were once allegedly run by the president’s daughter! When a private safari company comes into an area, it doesn’t take long for the operator to learn who the most notorious poachers are in his area. The operator then goes to the poacher’s village and recruits him to work for the safari company. The operator offers the poacher a job for more money than he can earn poaching. When I was hunting elephant in Tanzania last year, our local guide was a poacher-turned-tracker named Benito. The trophy fee I paid to shoot an elephant went directly to his communal area, plus his village got all the meat. Men like Benito all over Africa have stopped poaching to become productive workers solely because of hunting.
Saved from the Brink: The rhinoceros is perhaps the best example of how hunting has saved a species from possible extinction. In 1895, the white rhino was actually thought to be extinct, but a group of 100 were found in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. Thanks to conservation efforts funded primarily from revenues from hunted trophies, today there are nearly 20,000 white rhino in Southern Africa. The black rhino has recovered with the help of the same polices that saved the white rhino. In the 1960s, there were an estimated 70,000 black rhino in East Africa. By the 1990s, less than 2,500 remained. The Natal Parks Board stepped in and began a breeding program. Namibia did the same. The programs were so successful that by 2004 CITES actually granted five permits to hunt black rhino to each country. The elephant is another excellent example of the benefits of hunting. CITES was formed in 1973 as African elephants were being hammered by commercial poachers for their ivory. The elephant population in Africa dropped from over 1 million in 1970 to at least 472,269 in 2006, according to the World Conservation Union. Most estimates say the actual elephant population in Africa is around 600,000 today. In 1989, CITES banned commercial ivory sales yet allowed hunted trophies to be exported. Once the ivory trade was stifled, elephant populations in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa bounced back. The countries without growing elephant populations today are in unstable regions, such as the Congo, where poaching is still a problem. Zimbabwe was down below 30,000 elephants in 1989, but today the population is about 110,000. CITES allows Zimbabwe 500 permits a year, or less than half of 1 percent of its population. Elephants reproduce at a rate of 4 to 5 percent a year. Because of the growth rate, Botswana has more than 130,000 elephants. Experts say its carrying capacity is 60,000. Botswana will be issued a quota of 400 elephant by CITES in 2010. There are many other examples of how hunters have saved Africa’s wildlife, like the nyala, blesbok, black-faced impala and bontebok antelopes. But the bottom line is that African wildlife must pay its way in the modern world, and hunters provide that vital revenue.

NAMIBIAN HUNTING SEASON

“Hunting with Quality Hunting Safaris was a great experience, Brian and his guides were professional and extremely knowledgeable of the territory and animals. We saw many animals, and I was able to land a springbuck and a gemsbok while there. The accommodations were outstanding as well! Overall, I would highly recommend Quality Hunting Safaris if you are wanting to hunt in Namibia!”

“My experience with Quality Hunting Safaris was a great time with everything in order and on time from start to finish. The hunting in all areas that Brian, my main ph took me to was outstanding. Seen 4 daytime leopards. The hunting was done very professionally and ethical. Brian has great respect for all the animals and trophies. All accommodations and food was more than adequate. I took 7 trophies and will be back to hunt with Brian and Fred, my other PH again as I am already booked again. The trip was a joy during the world epidemic and Brian is also very positive about life and the future. Many thanks to Brian, Fred and Bossie who came over from S. Africa to do the camera work. I feel that I came as a client and left as family. I would endorse Quality Hunting Safaris to anyone who wishes to have a lifetime adventure. You will be in good hands with honest people.”

Namibia Hunting Season and Climate ←
Our trophy hunting season in Namibia opens in February and runs through November, being 10 months long it incorporates each of the four seasons. There are no particular months when plains game hunting is necessarily better, but time constraints or personal considerations such as weather, touring, wingshooting, bow hunting or specific seasonal activities might make a certain period of time more desirable to you. Keep in mind while pondering your dates for hunting in Namibia, that seasons in Namibia, since we are in the Southern hemisphere are opposite of those in the Northern hemisphere.
Located in the central high plains of Namibia at an elevation of 5200 feet (1600 meter), the temperature range can be rather extreme, typically varying 35° F (20° C) between daily highs and lows. During the early months of the hunting season, February to April, the occasional rainstorm can disrupt the clear sunny skies; although there may be heavy showers they are usually short in duration and typically occur in the late afternoon or evening.
The climate in Namibia is quite pleasant, we have low humidity and dry heat is much more tolerable and more conducive to hunting than is the case in most other destinations for hunting in Africa. Another benefit of the arid climate in our specific region is that Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris is in a malaria-free zone. With an absence of mosquitoes carrying malaria or yellow fever and no tsetse flies, overall we have a low insect population for Africa, which makes Ozondjahe a safer destination for hunters who wish to bring their family. To properly prepare for your hunt in Namibia, click here to visit our Travel Information page.
Our Hunting Team and Vehicles ←
As a top outfitter in Namibia, Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris has a complete team of full time professional hunting team and staff, including two highly accomplished, licensed Professional Hunters, assisted by our longtime native trackers, skilled skinners and drivers.
Our Professional Hunters primary goal is to provide you with the finest quality hunting trophies and exceptional personal service in every aspect to ensure that you have a once in a lifetime African hunting safari adventure.
Our professional hunting team’s hard work, integrity, understanding and bond with nature are crucial assets to the African hunter and key to a rewarding and successful trophy hunt. Our Professional Hunters are not only committed men, they are experts in the field and superb judges of game trophy quality but most importantly possess great practical experience and speak several languages including English. Carefully selected freelance Professional Hunters, familiar with Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris territory, are available for larger hunting parties requiring more than two Professional Hunters.
To ensure a trouble free and safe hunting safari, we have six reliable well-maintained and fully equipped four-wheel drive vehicles which are used for hunting as well as backup vehicles. All of our open-vehicles have radio capability throughout the game reserve, are customized particularly for comfort and hunting purposes and carry a first aid kit. Cool boxes containing water and other refreshments and snacks will be brought along on each vehicle for your needs and enjoyment.
Arms and Ammunition ←
While most shots are taken from within an average of 110 yards (100 meters), they can range from fairly close in thicker bush to relatively long distances up to 250 yards (230 meters) on open plains, so a good variable scope is suggested, you may also consider bringing a shooting stick or you can use one of ours.
We encourage you to bring your own rifle which you are the most comfortable and proficient using. If you are unable or do not wish to travel with your own firearm we have a selection of rifles and shotguns in different calibers that are available for rental by the day. Rifle sight-in will be done prior to the commencement of your hunting safari at our well equipped 100 yard (100 meter) shooting range to ensure your rifle shoots properly before you go in search of that dream trophy.
Depending on how many animals you aim to shoot, about sixty rounds of ammunition per caliber should be sufficient for a twelve-day hunt. One hundred rounds of ammunition per firearm is the maximum allowable. We think it best that you bring some type of wearable rifle cartridge carrier.
Good shot placement is more important than rifle power. Any caliber .270 or higher may be used for most plains game hunting but we strongly recommend a rifle well suited for African antelope such as a .300 Winchester Magnum, 338, 7mm, 30-06 or similar caliber rifle or higher with premium soft nose ammunition. Ammunition choice of bullet should be swift-A Frame, Woodleigh, Barnes X, Nosler partition or Hornady soft nose. A good quality variable rifle scope with a 3×9 power will be adequate. Handguns, automatic weapons and solid point cartridges are not permitted in Namibia.
Hunting License and Permits ←
Once your hunting safari has been confirmed, Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris will obtain your hunting license and hunting permits on your behalf. For us to apply on your behalf for these documents, the Hunting Application Form must be filled out by you and sent to us well before the commencement of your hunting safari. It may be completed and submitted to us online by clicking here .
Namibian law states that a hunter may take only two animals of each species per year on a regular trophy hunting permit, irrespective of if the trophies are exported or not, a hunter may harvest more than two animals of each species on a management hunt.
Field Preparation of Trophies ←
The field preparation of trophies (skinning, salting, drying and tagging) is included in our daily rate prices as well as normal transport of your trophies to our local taxidermist in Namibia, Taxidermy Studio & Tannery in Otjiwarongo. On rare occasions a special trip to the taxidermist may be required, for instance for transport of a Giraffe skin that cannot wait to be treated, then an extra transport fee might be charged by the taxidermist. With many years of experience refining their skills, our skinners working under the guidance of your Professional Hunter will ensure that each of your hunting trophies is prepared to your specifications and treated with the exacting care it deserves.
Dip Pack and Taxidermist ←
You may choose to have your African taxidermy work done in Namibia, partially or fully, or you can have it sent to be done by your own African animal taxidermist. What ever you decide your hunting trophies will be taken to a taxidermist in Namibia for processing, after the first preparation of your hunting trophies which is done at Ozondjahe Hunting Safaris. It usually takes us anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks to be finish with the first preparation of your trophies and have them delivered to the taxidermist. Should you not be doing your trophies’ taxidermy work in Namibia, we recommend that you bring to Namibia your taxidermist’s contact information along with their trophy tags, which your taxidermist should easily be able to supply you with. Laminated trophy tags labeled with all relevant delivery information including your name, specific wildlife port of entry in the US, and final shipping destination with full contact information (usually the taxidermist or you). Your taxidermist should be the one to provide these ready made tags to you well prior to your trip, and they should also give a couple of copies of this information to you on paper to give to us.
Once the taxidermist has your trophies, they will contact you to confirm your order for the work to be done and request payment. Payment to the taxidermist is done by wire transfer directly to them, usually a month or so after you have returned from your hunting safari. The taxidermist will then process your trophies for exportation into the country of destination which will be done through the shipping agent. Once the work by the taxidermist is done, the shipping agent will be contacting you for payment (see next section).
Should you want detailed information, or a quote for the dip pack only or the dip pack and taxidermy of your trophies please find the contact information below of the taxidermist in Namibia that we have been working with for many years and that we refer to our clients.

Permits and Importation Procedures for Trophies ←
All trophy importation permits from country of residence are the hunters’ responsibility to obtain; we are unable to apply for them on your behalf.
Laws and regulations pertaining to permits and importation for sport hunted trophies may change, therefore this article includes links to send you directly to the source rather than supply you with information that could be out of date.
Some species may not be able to be imported back into your country of residence or whatever country you intend on importing your trophies into. You can find information on the importation of sport hunted trophies for the United States at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service at https://fwsepermits.servicenowservices.com/fws?id=fws_index or the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) at https://www.cites.org . For other countries’ importation regulations please refer to their appropriate agencies.
It is legal to hunt a Cheetah and Black-Faced Impala in Namibia; however please note that the USA does not permit the importation of Cheetah and Black-Faced Impala hunting trophies. Canada, many countries in South America, Mexico and most countries in Europe, such as Spain and France will permit the importation of a Cheetah and Black-Faced Impala trophy.
Hunters must be identified on their hunting license and hunting permit by their full name as it appears on their passport. A copy of the passport of a trophy hunter must be attached to the application for a predator trophy hunting permit.
U.S. Fish & Wildlife and CITES Permits for Trophies ←
The import, export, or re-export of a number of sport hunted trophies may be regulated by a conservation law or treaty, which is implemented by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and requires a permit. Center for Disease Control for Baboon and Warthog Trophies ←
For hunters wishing to import or transport primate trophies such as Baboon, skin or skull that has not been fully taxidermied or treated so that it is non-infectious, you will need to get a permit to import or transport etiologic agents hosts or vectors of human disease from the Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) Etiologic Agent Import Permit Program. Fully taxidermied or treated Baboon trophies will not require such permit for importation into the United States.
Unworked dipped Baboon (primate) and Warthog (swine) trophy parts have to be packed separately. They can however be; shipped together (in it’s own package) as an extra package with the main consignment OR integrated in it’s own package within the larger main consignment – as long as it is packed separately – contamination free – and marked accordingly. The local taxidermist should be aware of the special shipping conditions applicable to both primate and swine trophies.

General Information about Hunting in Namibia ←
Namibia, formerly known as South West Africa, has a rich and interesting history. At one time the British Empire took partial possession of Namibia and later the Germans colonized the country until the First World War. Namibia was then placed under the administrative rule of South Africa and was finally granted independence on March 21, 1990.
Since independence, Namibia has benefited from great political stability. It is an easy, safe and affordable hunting destination for a great plains game hunting safari up to a high end big five hunting safari. This is why it is so popular amongst hunters, second only to South Africa in the numbers of hunters who visit annually, averaging more than 5,000 international hunters per year. Namibia has become a favorite destination for first time hunters, family groups of hunters as well as long time African hunting veterans who appreciate the benefits of hunting in Namibia.
Hunting properties range in size from private land of a few thousand acres to million acre hunting concessions where hunters can discover a country and its wildlife that are among the most beautiful, varied and rich that Africa has to offer. The hunting areas are spread throughout the country from north to south. In the vast majority of cases, these are private areas managed by their individual owners or more professional larger hunting outfits.
The majority of the hunting in Namibia takes place on private game ranches which are found throughout the country. Safari hunting is allowed on private game ranches, conservancies where hunting is permitted and within government hunting concession areas which are only found in the North of the country.
In Namibia, the habitat of the hunting areas is composed of dense thorny savanna, shrub savanna and large semi-desert plains. The terrain in some hunting areas can be challenging, even mountainous. The relatively high elevation of the central plains in much of the country where many of the prime hunting areas are located can also cause hunting to be more strenuous for those who are not used to it.
Namibia along with South Africa are the only two countries in Africa where one can hunt the entire big five; Lion, Leopard, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino (White as well as Black Rhinoceros). Most of the plains game hunting safaris, as well as Leopard hunting, take place in the lower two thirds of Namibia. Leopards which can be found in many areas are hunted using bait. The use of dogs for hunting leopard is no longer permitted in Namibia. Lion, Buffalo, Elephant and Rhino are hunted on a limited basis and primarily in the Northern most part of the country, including the Caprivi Strip. Cheetah can be found throughout Namibia and can also be hunted.
Namibia is most well known for the availability of numerous species for plains game hunting. The most famous and emblematic animal of Namibia, the Oryx, is found throughout Namibia. The following species are also found in abundance in Namibia; Cape Eland, Greater Kudu, Blue Wildebeest, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok, Impala, Steenbok, Klipspringer, Springbok and Warthog.
Trophy hunting may take place from half an hour before sunrise until half an hour after sunset during the hunting season and no hunting is allowed with artificial light. In Namibia hunting from a vehicle is permitted. There is no regulation controlling the number of days that a hunting safari must be, if there is a minimum it is set by the hunting outfitter.

Hunting Areas
Hunting is done in the central and northwestern parts of Namibia, 90 minutes drive north of the capital city, Windhoek. Omatako, the main hunting area (16 000 ha or 40 000 acres), is part of the Ombotozu conservancy, which spans more than 800 000 acres. Most of the hunting is done on Omatako, which has 33 game species available for hunting. Depending on the circumstances, one can also hunt in the conservancy with permission of the owner. Guests have the option to hunt in a low fenced area, which is a 15 min drive from Omatako Hunting Trails. The hunting area totals 20 000 ha or +/- 50 000 acres.
The advantage of hunting with Omatako is that one saves a lot of time traveling between hunting areas and of course you’re not restricted to hunting quotas. On the hunt you will be guided by a team of PH’s, which includes me and Johan Jr. If more PH’s are required we make use of a freelance PH who is familiar with the area to be hunted.
Our hunting season officially starts on the 1st of February until the end of November, for rifle hunting.
Namibia is one of the only countries in Africa that has a medal and minimum scoring system. That protects the hunter from shooting animals that does not make the minimum score, which could not be exported. Also to show the hunter how good his trophy is. Here on Omatako Hunting Trails you can expect to shoot 90% gold medal trophies. We also pride ourselves in top game genetics, with a number of Trophies in the Namibia Top 10.

A few huntable animals:
- Red Hartebeest
Ilka V. Ludovig
A fantastic place to hunt. Lot's of game. THANK YOU. Pierre-Paul & Lucie Allard
Great Guide! 1 1/2 hours stalk through the mountains, Zebra missed, Oryx seen and then the Kudu as a final reward. Next day Isaac was guiding successfully again. We saw Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Black Wildebesst, Duiker, Kudu, Blesbck.. We decided to go for Springbock and were successful from about 20m. What a pleasure...
Jan Domiszewski

You will discover that Namibia is not only beautiful with a pleasant climate, it is the easiest, most stable, safe and clean hunter-friendly country in Africa.

Air Travel with Firearms Trophy Hunters entering Namibia with a rifle(s) must complete a temporary rifle import permit application form for all rifle(s) and/or ammunition in possession. This permit application form will need to be handed in at the Police Firearm Customs check point with your rifle(s) and ammunition, in the Arrival Hall of Hosea Kutako International Airport, when arriving in Namibia. A maximum of two (2) firearms to be imported per hunting client.
Travelling with Firearms and Ammunition to Namibia
We recommend taking out full insurance for all firearms before traveling to Africa.
Before booking with your preferred airline, please confirm that the airline involved is rifle-friendly, and will agree to transport your firearms and ammunition. Before your departure, confirm with the airlines their procedure in transporting firearms and, if necessary, any prior forms to be completed before departure for handling and transfer purposes.
We always recommend booking in luggage and firearms straight through to Namibia, Hosea Kutako International Airport (WHK), even when you have a layover in another country on your way to Namibia for your hunt. Recent regulations and the world’s ‘anti-gun friendliness’, have made travelling with firearms a time-consuming and unpleasant process.
Prohibited Firearms

- Any pistol or revolver (unless specified for hunting)
- More than 100 rounds of ammunition per person per firearm.
- More than one firearm per caliber per person

10 Best African Countries for Safari
Posted: December 19, 2023 | Last updated: December 19, 2023
#1 Botswana
Recommended Tours:
Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.
Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.
Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.
Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Even though the country is still underdeveloped and most of the population live in rural households, its national parks, and sight-seeing destinations are on the top 10 of our lists.
Even though many would face some difficulties in locating Malawi on a map, given how tiny it is, the country is home to the world-renowned Lake Malawi National Park. This is practically one-third of the country and is the most biodiverse lake in the world.
Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.
When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.
In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.
If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.
Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.
#6 South Africa
But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.
Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.
For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.
#7 Tanzania
One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.
We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.
Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.
Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.
Out of its 20 national parks, the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is home to many wildlife animals such as African elephants, Angolan giraffes, Cape buffalo, etc. Other than that, there are many private ownerships of National parks, notably the Kasanka National Park which is near the basin of Lake Bangweulu. It's a safe place where visitors can see 400 different avian species.
Zambia may be a bit far down the list of popular destinations for your African safari, but many consider it to be a destination for diversified and immersive safari experiences, and making a notable feature on our 10 Best African Countries for Safari guide. The country is steadily focusing on conservation as their president has shown a keen interest and is working on building the nation's economy as well as the infrastructure.
