What it takes to get concierge lounge access on a cruise ship

You know how much we love our exclusive lounges here at TPG: We love them when we're at the airport before (or after) a flight, while staying in hotels and, for those of us who are fans of cruising , we love them on our ships, too.

At some cruise lines, access to a private "concierge lounge" is one of the premier perks of elite status . At other lines, it's something that only comes with the booking of a top suite .

Either way, it just may be the ultimate shipboard status symbol.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

The size and amenity offerings of concierge lounges on ships varies widely. On some, they're little more than quiet, keycard-accessed hideaways. They'll offer comfortable seating, an array of magazines and newspapers, and maybe an espresso machine and some self-serve snacks.

On other ships, concierge lounges are much more elaborate affairs. They'll have complimentary food available around the clock, complimentary alcoholic drinks (at some hours, at least), access to private pool and sundeck areas, and sometimes even full-blown private restaurants and bars.

As you might expect, concierge lounges on ships typically have a concierge on hand to help arrange dining reservations, show seating, spa appointments and more.

Guide to concierge lounges on ships

Unlike airport lounges, you can't get into a private lounge on a cruise ship using a top travel rewards credit card such as The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express. Flashing a Priority Pass Select membership card isn't going to help you either. Enrollment required for select benefits.

The most surefire way to get access to a concierge lounge on a ship is to book one of the top suites on a vessel. Holland America and Princess Cruises , for instance, are two lines where concierge lounge access is only available to passengers in top suites.

Some lines, such as Disney Cruise Line , have an array of special concierge-level cabins that come with lounge access as well as other perks. You'll typically pay a premium to get into one of these rooms as compared to a similarly sized cabin that does not come with the concierge designation.

A couple lines, most notably Royal Caribbean, offer private lounge access to top-tier members of their loyalty programs. At Royal Caribbean, the most elite Diamond Plus- and Pinnacle Club-level members of the line's Crown & Anchor Society can enter the dedicated Concierge Club lounges found on some ships.

Some Royal Caribbean vessels also have dedicated Diamond Club lounges for Crown & Anchor Society members at the Diamond, Diamond Plus and Pinnacle Club levels.

Not all cruise ships have concierge lounges. Luxury lines such as Seabourn and Silversea, for instance, rarely build exclusive lounges on their vessels. The thinking at these lines is that there's no need for such lounges, as every passenger on the vessel already is entitled to concierge-level perks. On luxury ships such as these, drinks typically are complimentary everywhere on board, at any time, and other typical perks of a concierge lounge such as concierge services are available to all passengers, too.

Related: A line-by-line guide to cruise line drinks packages

On each of the ocean ships operated by upscale line Viking , for instance, there's a concierge desk available to all passengers in the main interior public area, the Living Room. Filled with comfortable seating, a bar and space for live entertainment, the Living Room is essentially a (very high-end) concierge lounge. But it's open to everyone on board.

Is it worth paying up for a room with lounge access?

As noted, a few lines such as Royal Caribbean welcome top-tier members of their loyalty programs into private lounges at no charge. But, in many cases, you'll only get access to a shipboard lounge if you've paid a premium to stay in a top suite or special "concierge-level" cabin.

Is it worth paying up for such a room? That depends on how much you value the perks that come with lounge access. You'll also want to factor in other amenities that often come with upgraded rooms, such as butler service, early boarding privileges and reserved seats at shows.

The quality of the specific room should be a factor, too, of course — probably the most important factor. If you're booking a suite on a ship that comes with lounge access, the lounge access itself is probably not the biggest draw for you. You're probably more interested in the comfort and pampering that comes with that bigger suite.

As TPG's director of travel content, Summer Hull, recently noted after testing a concierge-level cabin on a Disney ship, the perks of a concierge-level cabin often go way beyond access to a private lounge. On Disney ships, the perks include early access to the ship on boarding days, and early access to the best reservation times for spa treatments, onboard tastings, premium restaurant tables and excursions. Concierge-level passengers on Disney ships also get priority access to ship-to-shore tender boats.

As Hull noted, concierge-level cabins on a Disney ship can cost hundreds of dollars more per day than a standard room. A concierge-level balcony cabin on a three-night Disney sailing might cost around $5,000 for a family of four — about $2,000 more than a similar cabin that is not at the concierge level.

For some people, that extra charge will be worth it for the perks; for others, it won't.

The ultimate in concierge-class cruising

There are some ships that offer an exclusive lounge experience that goes way beyond what's typical in the industry. Specifically, many of the vessels operated by Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises have private "ship within a ship" suite complexes that not only have exclusive lounges but also private pool areas, sundecks, restaurants and bars.

On Norwegian ships, these complexes are called The Haven. On MSC Cruises ships, they're called the MSC Yacht Club. As with Disney's concierge-level cabins, the cabins in these areas come at a premium. But they also come with a huge array of perks.

The lounge in The Haven on Norwegian Cruise Line's 4,004-passenger Norwegian Bliss has the most spectacular view on the ship. (Photo courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line)

Cruisers staying in The Haven, for instance, have access to a pre-cruise concierge who can handle all sorts of requests such as the delivery of special pillows to your room or the stocking of a particular type of chamomile tea. A pre-cruise concierge also will book your spa treatments, dining reservations and shore excursions long before you ever get on board.

The Haven passengers also get access to a private check-in lounge upon arrival. They're quickly whisked on board, where they enjoy additional perks including butler service, special seating in theaters, priority disembarkation on port days and more.

Below is a line-by-line look at concierge lounges on ships (when available) and how to get access.

Celebrity provides nothing but a top notch vacation. If you're looking for high-class and luxury, you won't go wrong here!

Suite was the perfect size for 2. Wonderful staff! There are no complaints. Izzy, our butler, the 2 cabin stewards and the Cafe Baccio staff were always most attentive. The reason we cruise was all there. We’ll be back!

This was our first cruise and we chose a Sky Suite (9204) and were extremely happy. The bathroom was just as described. The attention to detail that our Butler, Dino, gave us was beyond my expectations. He led us up to our cabana and handled my tailoring job.

We have taken several cruises in a suite. None of them compared to the treatment of the suite guests on this trip. We felt that we received value for what we paid for. We also liked being able to interact with the officers at any given moment.

If people are wanting to experience a phenomenal cruising experience, then I would highly recommend that they should seriously consider a quality holiday with Celebrity. Everything from the incredible Ships, the absolutely amazing Crew Members, the high standard and wide selection of Food, the outstanding and diverse onboard Entertainment, will truly ensure the most astounding and immersible exciting and memorable holiday!!

Cruise cabins and suites

Cruise ship rooms, floor plans, photos.

CruiseMapper's cabin and suites section allows you to explore cruise staterooms by ship. Each page provides extensive information on all passengers accommodations on a particular vessel, including floor plans, room types and categories (grades used upon booking), cabin sizes, deck location. Also provided is an extensive review of all ticket price inclusive en-suite amenities, along with furniture details and additional / bonus perks (if available).

CruiseMapper logo

Here you will find brief descriptions by category of all stateroom types that can be found on cruise ship deck plans . You will find more information and many useful tips on staterooms at our best and worst cabins article. Here you can search for a particular ship (via the above search bar) or you can skip the introduction (explanations) and go down directly to our list of large passenger ships' cabin pages .

Cruise staterooms booking rates are usually based on deck location. Lower-deck accommodations are the cheapest. Midship rooms cost more. Balcony staterooms and Suites located aft or forward are the most expensive. Most cruise companies (especially those with large-sized vessels in the fleets) divide the main cabin types into subcategories. These grades are marked with numbers (like for balcony cabins - B1, B2, B3, B4) and are displayed on the deck layouts with different colors.

Cruise ship suites

Cruise suite accommodations are premium grades cabins. They are usually larger in comparison to balcony staterooms and feature more amenities. As a rule, suites have a full-size bathtub, larger shower, bigger closets and balcony (some have 2 private balconies). Amenities include coffee makers, premium sound systems, large-size TVs, complimentary butler service.

Loft Suites (aka Duplex Suites)

Loft Suites are "duplex suites" (on two levels) and available on the world's largest passenger ships of Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class and Quantum-class. The following layout is of Harmony of the Seas and its largest accommodation - the Royal Loft Suite.

Grand Suite

Twin beds in this type of cabin can be joined in a king bed. Grand Suites have also a double sofa bed and large private balcony, sitting area with 2-armchairs and a coffee table, desk, dressing area with vanity, walk-in closet, safe box, TV, phone, refrigerator, mini-bar, private bath with whirlpool tub and shower, patio chair and table, balcony lounge chair, pillow menu, bathrobes, hairdryer. See below the magnificent Oceania Marina ship's Owner Suite plan.

Captain Suite

Captains Suite accommodations have a huge 220 ft2 (20,5 m2) separate bedroom, while the living area is sized 290 ft2 (27 m2). There are 2 upper beds and a sofa bed, private bathroom with whirlpool hot tub and glass shower, safe, TV and phone, mini-bar, bathrobes, hairdryer.

A table and 3 patio chairs are on the balcony.

Owners Suite

Owner's Suites are some of the most luxurious accommodations at sea. They usually feature two separate bedrooms, private balcony (with luxury lounge furniture, even dining area and hot tub), living room (with sofa bed), luxury bathroom (with whirlpool bathtub and separate shower), second bathroom (WC), dining room, dressing area. Some Owner's Suites (like NCL's) can accommodate up to 10 passengers when connected to an adjacent Suite.

Ocean Suite

OS stands for "Ocean Suite" and category SS is "Spa Suite", recently changed to Junior Suite. These cabins have: twin beds that convert to king, sitting area with armchair and coffee table, sofa, dressing area with vanity, large balcony, wall safe, 2 big closets, mini-bar, refrigerator, private whirlpool bath with tub and shower, television and phone, balcony lounge chair, patio chair and table, pillow menu, bathrobes, hairdryer.

2-Bedroom Mozart Suite (largest stateroom on a riverboat)

World's largest accommodation found on a riverboat is Riverside Mozart 's French Balcony Suite. The vessel has two such accommodations, each sized 885 ft2 / 82 m2. Must be noted, that the stateroom is combined with an adjacent French Balcony cabin.

Penthouse Suite

Penthouse Suites have a twin beds configuration (beds can convert to queen). The other features are a large balcony, dressing area with vanity, sitting area with armchair and coffee table, wall safe, mini bar, private bath with whirlpool tub and shower, television and phone, refrigerator, bathrobes and hairdryer. Some cabins are without whirlpool tub, sofa or coffee table.

Balcony staterooms

Most balcony cruise ship cabins feature floor-ceiling sliding glass doors leading to a private step-out veranda. The balcony also is furnished with a table and pair of chairs/loungers. Standard balconies are separated by dividers. As sizes, balcony cabins on cruise ships vary, with those on Princess and NCl ships being among the smallest compared to other big-ship lines. In our cruise deck plans, we also list room sizes and the size of the balcony. Balcony – Apart from the balcony they can offer You twin beds that can be converted to King-size bed. Balconies also provide sitting area with chair and coffee table and private bath with shower, as well as closet/wardrobe, electronic safe box, mini bar, television and phone, sofa, bathrobes, hairdryer. Most verandas are between 30-60 ft2 ( approx 3-6 m2). Below are shown the layouts of the Anthem ship's Deluxe and Accessible balcony cabins.

Premium Balcony

Premium Balcony cabins also have twin beds that convert to King-size, their wraparound balcony enfolds the stateroom. Balcony's windows are often floor-ceiling and wall-to-wall.

Cove Balcony Staterooms

Cove balconies, unlike Balconies, have two patio chairs and a table. The rest of the stuff is identical. First of all-balcony, and again twin beds that convert to king, sofa, private bath with shower, safe, closet, mini bar, television and phone, sitting area with chair and coffee table, bathrobes and hairdryer.

Cove Balcony rooms are CCL-Carnival's specialty, available on some of the "Fun Ships", and are interesting because they are located on lower decks (thus closer to waterline).

Oceanview staterooms

Oceanview cabins: as sizes are similar to Interior staterooms on cruise ships, but each of them has a Porthole or normal window (both types do not open). Their window sizes also vary by line and ship. On some ocean ships and some luxury river ships, such staterooms feature floor-ceiling windows. Oceanview rooms' window sizes are usually 4x3 ft (1,2x0,9 m). As furniture, Oceanview cruise cabins have twin beds that convert to King-size, sofa, TV and phone, sitting area, safe, mini bar, private bath with shower, and also a washroom with sink and a junior tub, bathrobes and a hairdryer and of course a picture window. You should take a look at the cruise ship deck plans again as Cabins of 5A category have two porthole windows. Unlike deluxe, there is no washroom with sink and junior tub. Below are the layouts of Ovation of the Seas Oceanview cabins (categories standard, large, and superior).

Deluxe Oceanview

These cabins have no balconies but still can offer a marvelous view through their picture window as well as twin beds that convert to King-size. However, beds in Category 6N can't be joined (to King) and sleeps max 5 people.

Other amenities include sofabed, TV, phone, seating, safe, mini-bar, a bathroom with shower, a washroom (with junior tub), bathrobes, hairdryer.

Scenic Oceanview

The interior is the same - twin beds convertible to King-size, picture window, sofa, TV, phone, seating, safe, mini-bar, bath with shower, washroom with sink and junior tub, bathrobes, hairdryer.

The difference is that Scenic Oceanviews are larger.

Inside staterooms

Inside cruise ship cabins' best feature is their price - you book them with the line's cheapest rates available. These cruise accommodations don't offer window views. Still, on some of the newest cruise ships of Royal Caribbean and Disney, there are categories Interior staterooms with a "virtual window", which is a large LED screen displaying outside cam views. The screen doesn't have TV functions.

On some Carnival ships, there are Inside cabins with a "French Balcony" (with opening glass doors). Also, some "interior staterooms" are actually Oceanview (with a non-opening window), but since their views are obstructed, they are booked as Interior. On Royal Caribbean ships, some Inside cabins have a window looking out to the ship's interior promenade (street)

Inside cruise cabins are fitted with twin beds (convertible to King or Queen), private bathroom (shower), sitting area. Next are shown the layouts of Interior rooms on Harmony OTS .

Small Interior Stateroom (as the name implies) is the least spacious standard cabin category on cruise ships. These cabins have two beds – (upper and lower), private bath (WC/shower), a small sitting area.

Single cabins (Studios)

Single occupancy staterooms could be either Inside or Balcony. Some river cruise lines even offer single suites (booking with single occupancy rates). The most famous liner having plenty of single cabins (designed specifically for solo travelers) is Norwegian Epic .

This huge vessel has a total of 128 "Studios".

Next are shown layouts of Quantum OTS single-occupancy cabins (balcony and interior).

Connecting cabins (for large families)

The next layout shows RCI's "Family Connected Junior Suite" plan ( Quantum OTS ). Ship's main cabin grades (Balcony, Oceanview, Inside) are all combined here into a 10-person "Family Suite". The layout also shows the exact positioning of furniture, 3 baths (1 with hot tub), large seating area, 2 double-sofabeds, 2 connecting balconies.

How to choose cabins on cruise ships?

If you are planning a cruise, booking a cabin is certainly as important as picking up the cruise line (brand) or the boat. Before you take that decision, consider some issues related to your own personality and the other people traveling with you.

  • The first important thing you have to be honest with your conscious is whether you can get seasick .
  • Secondly, what type of person you are and what exactly do you intend to do onboard? Are you a party type or you just would like to spend several calm days at sea, away from the office jungle on land. Would you enjoy the pool with its all opportunities for contacts or you would rather have a rest lying at a balcony?
  • No matter the stateroom type, it could still be noisy or make you seasick. The more central and lower position your cabin has, the more stable it is.
  • In case you and the rest of the family members / friends are thin or you just don't intend to spend too much time in the cabin, you can pick a small one. Usually, staterooms are able to house no more than 4 people. Two passengers pay full fares and the other receive discounted rates.
  • If you need stateroom for 4+ passengers, connecting cabins are the best option, and it will cost you less than a suite. Bathtub-fitted cabins are not so many per vessel. All cruise deck plans show such information (bathtub, sofabed, double bed, bunk beds, etc).

Noise issues - which cabins on the ship to avoid?

If you are a party type and louder sounds are not bothering, everything would be OK. If you organize a family voyage, however, you should look for a cabin away from the noisiest areas in the cruise ship deck plans. The first thing to look for in the cruise ship plan is the engine room location. Along with the noises, there are also vibrations.

Staterooms under discos, sport playgrounds, gym centers are usually very noisy. Cabins under Lido Deck (aka Pool Deck) are also among those to avoid. The buffet restaurant on this deck generates noises from moving tables and chairs and tableware. Staircases are also very noisy.

Take a good look at the cruise ship deck plan - room location is crucial!

Cabin's deck location is of great importance. Lower and more central-positioned accommodations are more stable. However, "cool cabins" are usually on higher decks, which means spending more money won't necessarily save you from seasickness.

Stern cabins (aft) have the largest balconies. Forward suites provide the same view as from the Navigation Bridge (wheelhouse). Some cabins are with limited / obstructed seaview due to lifeboats or other equipment.

Guarantee staterooms - take your chance!

If you are not set on selecting something particular and location is not a priority, you should not investigate the cruise ship deck plan so cautiously. The so-called ''guarantee'' cabin grades can turn to be among the best booking options. The "guarantee stateroom" booking allows you to pick up a category, not a cabin. In case the category is sold out you'll be proposed a higher category lodging. The first cabins to be booked are both the cheapest and the most expensive ones, be aware when you choose to test your luck. However, it could be a bit risky so it's more reasonable to get back to the cruise ship deck plans.

Shipboard facilities

If want to cruise with your children you'd better book a stateroom close to kids entertainment facilities. Cruise ship deck plans can once again help you to choose from the many opportunities created to meet passengers' requirements. Spa cabins are recently available for instance. Passengers get free access to the steam room and other connected facilities. These cabins are of course close to the SPA and you can move between in your bathrobe only.

NCL's The Haven and MSC's Yacht Club accommodations are located within an exclusive complex and offer ''ship within ship'' amenities and services. Passengers (who can afford them) enjoy private sundecks with swimming pools and jacuzzis and exclusive facilities like restaurants, bar lounges, gyms and spas.

Prefabricated cruise ship cabin

On May 24, 2016, a new "Lightweight Composite Cabin" design was unveiled in Southampton, England. The innovation was funded by the UK Government. Involved in the cabin's designing, engineering, manufacturing and furbishing were the companies Carnival UK ( Carnival Corporation 's subsidiary), Gurit Ltd (global composite materials supplier), Lloyd's Register Group Ltd (technical / business services, maritime classification company), PE Composites Ltd (composite designer / manufacturer), Trimline Ltd (marine interior refurbishment specialist) and the University of Southampton.

The new modular cabin prototype is half the weight of a typical cruise room. It also fully complies with the FTP Code's requirements (International Code for the Application of Fire Test Procedures). Reducing the ship's topdecks weight is an important issue for naval architects as the trend for building large-capacity cruise vessels continues. The new (prefabricated) module's halved weight opens up opportunities for adding more passenger rooms to newbuild ships, without adding to the ship's DWT weight.

Note: The following list of cruise lines cabins (per ship) includes only CruiseMapper's largest companies' fleets and only ocean-going vessels. For all other vessels (including small-fleet shipping companies , cruiseferries and riverboats ) use the search box at page top .

VIFP Club - Carnival's Recognition Program

What is the VIFP Club®? The VIFP Club stands for the Very Important Fun Person Club, Carnival's guest recognition program. If you're a Past Guest, the program recognizes you for your continued loyalty to Carnival with increasing recognition and benefits as you cruise more and more. New to Carnival? The VIFP Club is a warm welcome to the Carnival experience and gives you access to VIFP members-only rates and promotions. What are the benefits for each VIFP level? Click here  to view the benefits of each level. Benefits are subject to the provisions in the VIFP Club Terms and Conditions. All capitalized terms herein have the same meaning as those set forth in the VIFP Club Terms and Conditions. No substitution of Benefits may occur, except in the sole discretion of Carnival Cruise Line. Benefits are subject to change at any time without notice.     What are the Terms and Conditions for the VIFP Club? To review the Terms and Conditions, click here .  How do I see my VIFP points? To see the number of cruise days (points) you currently have on your VIFP profile, simply log into your profile, located at https://www.carnival.com/BookedGuest . Once logged in, click on 'Your Name' to load your VIFP profile and then click on 'My Cruises'. This will show your current VIFP level, how many points you have and how many points you need to reach the next level. How will the one-time donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital® work? Each year, for every guest that reaches the Diamond level in the VIFP Club, Carnival will make a $100 USD donation to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. In the initial year,   If a cruise is cut short or extended for reasons outside the control of guests, how many points will guests earn since we are basing it on the actual number of days sailed? As a gesture of goodwill, we will never decrease the number of cruise days earned as a result of the shortening of a cruise. In cases where a ship returns at a later date than scheduled, we will increase the number of cruise days. (Extended sailings must have taken place, after the launch of the VIFP Program, 6/30/2012).

I activated my account but noticed that all of my cruises were not included. How long will it take for Carnival to adjust my level? Carnival wants to ensure than all eligible cruises are captured in guests' cruise history. It takes up to three business days after a sailing for the system to update a guest's cruise history. If you notice a discrepancy, log into your personal profile on  www.carnival.com/VIFP and submit a request form. The request form can be found at the bottom of the 'Review My Cruise History' page in the 'Manage My Cruise History' tab. Please note, Carnival cannot process requests over the phone. Carnival will review each request on an individual basis. Please be patient, the process may take 2-3 weeks to complete. I was only a sail or two away from becoming Platinum in the previous recognition program. Is there anything I can do to reach the Platinum level? We understand the investments guests have made over the years, and we'd like to thank and acknowledge guests who were near advancement in the previous program. Any guest that sailed at least 10 times by December 31, 2013 was grandfathered into the Platinum level under the old program rules.

How will Carnival know my level when I sail? Guests will receive a color-coded Sail & Sign® card during each sailing which will identify their levels in the VIFP Club. It's recommended that all guests activate their VIFP Club membership at least eight weeks prior to their next sailing to ensure they're recognized as a member of their correct level.

Will benefits change over time? They might someday. Therefore, Carnival Cruise Line® reserves the right to change terms/benefits at any time. If a guest is sharing a cabin with another guest in a different level (e.g. a Platinum and a Gold), how will benefits apply to the stateroom? Benefits are meant to recognize individual members and are therefore not transferable to travel companions. Can a guest bring another guest to membership functions on board? Generally, benefits requiring an invitation are designated per member. Certain events invite eligible guests to bring one additional person as space permits. Details are provided on invitations for each of the functions. Will guests automatically receive recognition/benefits? VIFP Club members will automatically move from one level to the next level based on their VIFP Points and will receive the benefits of their level on each sailing.   Guests graduating into a new level during a cruise will receive the benefits of the new level they are graduating into from the beginning of the cruise (e.g. those graduating to Gold on the 3rd day of a 5-day cruise will receive Gold benefits for the entire duration of their cruise). Please note that ‘debarkation day’ is not considered a ‘cruise day’, therefore, points are not earned for that day.

While guests are automatically eligible for their benefits, some Diamond level benefits must be requested at the time of booking (e.g. one-time benefits). Please remember to always provide your VIFP number at time of booking. How long do I have to activate my membership? Guests may activate their membership at any time, but we do encourage everyone to do it as soon as they can. As of June 30, 2013, we are no longer able to make adjustments to cruise history. Do VIFP Club members earn points when cruising with sister lines? Benefits of the VIFP Club are unique to Carnival Cruise Line cruises. VIFP Points may be earned only when sailing on Carnival Cruise Line. Cruises taken on Carnival Corporation's other own cruise lines will not earn VIFP Points and VIFP Club benefits will not be offered. Which Carnival Cruise Line cruises count towards my VIFP Points? VIFP Points will be earned for all qualifying Carnival Cruise Line cruises, starting with Carnival's first sailing on March 9, 1972. (Non-qualifying cruises include charter cruises, non-revenue cruises, etc.) How much does it cost to become a VIFP Club member? There are no fees to join the VIFP Club, and membership never expires. Does each cruiser in a guest's family/party/stateroom earn points and receive Club benefits? Yes, each member of the VIFP Club earns VIFP Points and will receive the benefits of their VIFP Club level. However, some benefits are age-restricted. Should everyone activate/join (all members of guest's family or party)? All guests who have cruised with Carnival will be automatically enrolled. Still, each guest should individually activate their account to ensure data accuracy. For guests who haven't sailed with Carnival yet, we recommend at least one adult within each family or party join the VIFP Club to see if you can take advantage of members-only offers or promotions that are offered from time-to-time.   How do guests enroll? If guests have cruised with Carnival before, they're automatically enrolled. They simply activate their account at www.carnival.com/VIFP . Guests who have never sailed with Carnival can join prior to cruising at www.carnival.com/VIFP . Or, if they don't enroll prior to their cruise, they'll be automatically enrolled upon completion of the voyage. They simply activate their account at www.carnival.com/VIFP . How does the VIFP Club work? Members of the VIFP Club earn one VIFP Point for every day they've been at sea (aka cruise day), so 1 VIFP Point = 1 Cruise Day. There are five levels in the VIFP Club:

  • Blue: Cruise Rookies
  • Red: 2-24 VIFP Points
  • Gold: 25-74 VIFP Points
  • Platinum: 75-199 VIFP Points
  • Diamond: 200+ VIFP Points

What is the difference between Past Guest and the VIFP Club membership? Past Guest fares will continue. However, membership in the VIFP Club provides for additional valuable benefits.

I have already sailed with Carnival before and previously received a color-coded Sail and Sign card. Will I be grandfathered into that group in the VIFP Club? Guests who sailed with Carnival on more than 10 cruises by December 31, 2013 were automatically included in the Platinum level of the VIFP Club. Additionally, some guests who previously received Platinum cards advanced to the VIFP Club's Diamond level.  All guests who sailed with Carnival fewer than 10 times were placed in the level that corresponds with their VIFP Points (i.e., cruise days). Guests with fewer than 25 VIFP Points were placed in the new Red level. Those who have earned 25-74 VIFP Points were placed in the Gold level.

San Francisco Bay Area

Cruiseclout score: 95.0, guide to vip enclaves on cruise ships.

If you're an upscale cruiser, sailing on a luxury cruise ship is one way to go. But an increasing number of cruisers are opting for a big, mass-market cruise ship outfitted with ship-within-a-ship VIP enclaves, luxurious perks or high-end stateroom categories with exclusive services.

What's the appeal? Today's hybrid cruises combine high-end havens or plush VIP services with the wide range of options and activities you can find on a large modern ship. In return for paying four to five times as much as you would for a standard stateroom, guests staying in these VIP enclaves or luxury suites typically receive a personal butler, concierge service, top-of-the-line accommodations, private restaurants and free drinks, with perhaps a private sun deck and swimming pool thrown in.

These high-end getaways are especially popular with  multigenerational families, given that few  luxury cruise lines cater to families. The solution? A ship that offers luxurious touches and quiet retreats  while still offering kids' clubs, multiple restaurants, stage shows and all the razzle-dazzle of today's resort-like smart ships.

Here are five VIP enclaves and perks-heavy luxury suite classes you'll find on contemporary and premium cruise ships.

Take a dip in the private pool or relax on one of the lounge chairs of Norwegian Pearl's Courtyard, accessible only to guests of the Haven accommodations.

Ships : Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Joy, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Viva

Here's how The Haven works on eight Norwegian Cruise Line ships: First, like Fight Club, you don't talk about The Haven. You may not even know it exists if you're one of the roughly 4,100 passengers aboard a ship such as  Norwegian Escape . The Haven is the sealed-off private playground and exclusive enclave of 95 luxury suites discreetly perched high up in the forward part of the ship.

Passengers enter The Haven with a key card. The section of the ship features 24-hour butler service, a gorgeous sun deck/courtyard with a private pool, two whirlpools, sauna, fitness center, concierge service and a private entrance to the Mandara Spa (shhh!). On Norwegian Breakaway , Getaway ,  Epic  and other ships, Haven guests get access to an exclusive, private restaurant; on other ships, you dine in one of the specialty restaurants, such as Cagney's Steak House or Moderno.

On the 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic, the 120-guest Haven wing has the feel of a country club, complete with a members-only pool.

Other perks for Haven guests: a cordoned-off seating area up front during live stage productions, priority embarkation and disembarkation (no waiting in line), priority boarding on tenders to shore, fine linens on the bedding, gourmet treats delivered each evening, and plush bathrobes, slippers and oversized towels.

The size of The Haven varies by ship, ranging from 18 to 95 suites. The rooms range from spacious balcony suites to opulent three-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom villas of more than 5,700 square feet, including a private garden and dramatic floor-to-ceiling windows. And the service rivals that of five-star hotels.

Cost? "Depending on the season, a room in the Haven might cost a couple $10,000 for a weeklong cruise vs. $3,000 for an ordinary stateroom elsewhere on the ship," the New York Times reported in a front-page feature on the elite enclave phenomenon. Actually, it can run as much as $30,000 for a two-week cruise in a high-end suite, or as little as $3,000 for a balcony suite. The tab includes dining, drinks, Wi-Fi and shore excursions. The Haven is geared to couples, solo travelers, multi-generational family groups, spa enthusiasts and others.

Want to go?  Norwegian offers seven-night Caribbean sailings on Norwegian Escape  out of Miami with guest stays in a Haven Spa Suite with balcony priced from $3,113 and up. Contact a Cruiseable travel advocate at 1-877-322-3773.

Top Sail Lounge on Deck 15, with its sweeping views and elegant interior, is part of MSC Fantasia's exclusive Yacht Club.

MSC Yacht Club

On Italian-flavored  MSC Cruises , the ship-within-a-ship concept takes the form of the members-only Yacht Club, which resides on the foredecks of four MSC ships. First-time and returning members get a key card to enter the Yacht Club and its Top Sail Lounge, which serves drinks and gourmet snacks). You also get access to a private sun deck with a swimming pool, two whirlpools and a bar and cafe, and a solarium. Inside the two-deck hideaway, an impressive curved main staircase sparkles with Swarovski crystals. Yacht Club members dine at a private high-end restaurant, such as Le Muse.

Each MSC Yacht Club Suite is located in a private part of the MSC Divina that includes stunning front-of-ship views, king bed (convertible to two singles), marble bathroom with bathtub, 24-hour butler and concierge service and complimentary minibar.

On MSC Divina , the Yacht Club offers 64 Deluxe Suites, from 295 to 344 square feet, including a 61-square-foot balcony. Two extravagantly designed Royal Suites are available at 562 square feet (which includes a 172-square foot balcony). Three Executive & Family Suites, at 462 to 547 square feet, are located on deck 12 and have no balconies but give guests access to the Yacht Club on decks 15 and 16. Suites come with a marble bathroom, plush linens and a pillow menu and, while not as opulent as the massive suites in The Haven, they're relaxing and comfortable.

Other perks: Members receive a personal butler and 24-hour concierge service, priority embarkation and disembarkation, included shore excursions, specialty restaurant reservations and access to the ship's shops outside of normal hours. Yacht Club guests also enjoy complimentary select wines and spirits. They have their own entrance to the Aurea Spa and can use the Thermal Suite free of charge.

MSC plans to roll out a grander version of the Yacht Club on its upcoming ships MSC Seaside and MSC Meraviglia.

Want to go? Rates for the MSC Yacht Club Suites on MSC Divina’s 7-night Caribbean sailings start at $1,699 US per person (double occupancy). MSC also offers more adventurous itineraries around the world. MSC Yacht Club cruises offer many activities for kids on many sailings. Contact a Cruiseable travel advocate at 1-877-322-3773.

A butler serves guests on their private balcony in a Queens Grill suite (Q5) aboard Queen Mary 2.

Queens & Princess Grill on Cunard Line

Cunard Line , founded 176 years ago, has for decades offered a tiered (some might say "class") system on its ships, with its Queens and Princess Grill class accommodations and restaurants. If you book those higher-end suites, your ticket gets you access to dine in the high-end Princess Grill and exclusive Queens Grill restaurants, which offer a single seating. Other perks for guests in Grills suites and penthouses: butler and concierge service, priority embarkation , pre-dinner canapés,  a private lounge and terrace and in-suite dining with selections from the Queens Grill menu

This month Cunard's flagship, Queen Mary 2 , is going into drydock in Germany for the most expensive ship refurbishment in Carnival UK’s history. She will return next month with new updated Grills suites.

Suite Class on Celebrity Cruises

Ships : celebrity eclipse, celebrity equinox, celebrity silhouette, celebrity solstice, celebrity reflection, celebrity constellation, celebrity infinity, celebrity millennium, celebrity summit.

While Celebrity Cruises doesn't offer ship-within-a-ship private enclaves or a separate sun deck or swimming pool for affluent travelers, it does offer guests a bevy of exclusive venues for guests who book a Suite Class room. Suite Class passengers receive access to a private restaurant and VIP club lounge, butler service, priority check-in and disembarkation, tender service, specialty restaurant and theater reservations, and in-suite dining. Suite guests also receive Bulgari toiletries and Perrier-Jouët Champagne upon arrival. Staying in a top-of-the-line suite? You'll receive unlimited Internet access, a stocked mini-bar and a premium beverage package at no extra cost.

On Celebrity Reflection , guests in the Reflection Suite gain access to a private area accessible by key card. The stateroom measures 1,636 square feet with a private 194-square-foot veranda and comes with a bathroom and all-glass shower cantilevered over the side of the ship. Yowza!

The Royal Loft Suite aboard Oasis of the Seas offers guests a two-story room with panoramic views, a master bath and bedroom, twin beds that convert to a Royal King bed, separate bathroom, a private balcony and whirlpool, spacious dining room and more.

Royal Suite Class on Royal Caribbean

Ships : quantum of the seas, anthem of the seas, ovation of the seas, oasis of the seas, allure of the seas, harmony of the seas, symphony of the seas, spectrum of the seas, odyssey of the seas, wonder of the seas, utopia of the seas, icon of the seas, .

Will we see a ship within a ship enclave on Royal Caribbean any time soon? "That's not the mojo or the culture of Royal Caribbean," president Michael Bayley told the New York Times. "Segregating people into a class system is un-American."

That said, Royal is not to be out-perked. This month the world's second-largest cruise line is introducing a new Royal Suite class of staterooms on its six new smart ships (including Harmony of the Seas , which debuts Sunday). The crème de la crème, a high-end set of Royal Suites called the Star Class, costs upward of $30,000 a week. This month the company is also rolling out its Royal Genie program, offering personal butlers to its highest spenders. The goal of the service is to learn guests' preferences — from favorite sports teams to wines and food — before they even embark and provide fun surprises and experiences throughout your vacation. Other perks include complimentary high-speed Internet, specialty dining, Ultimate Beverage Packages, access to the thermal suite at the spa and pre-paid gratuities.

Other ships

Other contemporary cruise lines haven't followed suit with the ship-within-a-ship concept, though that's not to say there are no tiered services. Oh, yes, there are.  Disney Cruise Line offers concierge-level suites on its two largest ships, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream . And we'll likely see more cruise lines follow suit in the coming years.

Luxury cruise ships

Luxury cruise ships offer everything from butler service to included shore excursions to complimentary Champagne and wine (see our luxury series below). Some offer tiered services:

  • Oceania  offers a private lounge for passengers in its Owner’s Suites.
  • Guests sailing in Concierge-level suites (and higher) on any Regent Seven Seas ship receive such benefits as a one-night pre-cruise stay in a luxury hotel packages, free ground transfers, online shore excursion reservations, reservations at the Prime 7 and Signatures restaurants and complimentary wi-fi.
  • Crystal Cruises is expanding headlong into more luxury travel experiences.

cruise vip room

I've stayed in 3 types of rooms on cruises, and the cheapest was never worth it. Here's what to book instead.

  • I'm a frequent cruise traveler who's stayed in a variety of onboard accommodations.
  • The least expensive rooms have no view and are usually cramped, especially if shared by a family.
  • Splurging on a higher-category cabin on my last cruise was the best decision I made.

Automatically booking the cheapest room on a cruise ship without doing proper research first can ruin a trip.

As someone who's been going on cruises for over 10 years, I've learned that the price tag for these vacations can vary based on a number of factors — from cruise line to trip duration to room category.

Staying in the most standard-level cabin seems like an obvious way to keep costs down. But after trying out three different room categories, both with and without my kids, I've found that a ship's least expensive option is almost never worth it.

Based on my experience in three different cruise-room categories, here are the ones I recommend skipping and the ones I recommend splurging on.

Interior staterooms are limited in space and privacy

The standard (and least expensive) room on any cruise ship is typically called an inside or interior stateroom.

These cabins often sleep three to four people and are located in the middle of the ship, with no exterior view of the vessel's surroundings.

I've stayed in interior staterooms on a Carnival Cruise Line ship and a Disney Cruise Line ship . Aside from different decor styles and a few small touches, this room category is fairly standard across the board.

When I'm on a cruise, I like to wake up and open my curtains to look at the ocean or the port where the ship is docked , which isn't an option in these inward-looking cabins.

Apart from having no view, interior staterooms are very small. The exact square footage varies but, for reference, the Disn ey Fantasy cruise ship's interior stateroom is 169 square feet and a Royal Caribbean ship's version is around the same size at 164 square feet .

To put those numbers into perspective, standard hotel rooms in the US are, on average, around 330 square feet , almost double the size of the entry-level cruise accommodation.

I want to be able to maneuver around without tripping over luggage, accent furniture, or my own family members. And because of the lack of space in interior staterooms, that's a challenge.

This category is definitely the most economical option, making it ideal for travelers on a budget .

However, if families, especially ones traveling with teens, can swing an alternative, they should steer clear of cramming into an interior stateroom and opt for a category with more space and privacy.

Ocean-view staterooms provide slightly more space but can still feel cramped

The next category up is usually an ocean-view stateroom.

With an outward-facing window, ocean-view staterooms are a solid mid-tier option for travelers who want more space than an interior stateroom offers but don't want to spend extra for a balcony room.

Their exact size and capacity range from ship to ship, but Disney Fantasy's ocean-view staterooms are 204 square feet , and Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas' version is 179 square feet .

Many of these accommodations fit up to five people. If you have more than four family members (yes, infants who are six months and older are part of the headcount), making the jump from an interior stateroom to an ocean-view stateroom is absolutely worth the extra money.

Some cruise lines sell ocean-view rooms as the entry-level category for families of five or more travelers , simply because many interior staterooms can only accommodate a maximum of four guests.

My top pick is balcony staterooms, which offer privacy and plenty of space

Balcony staterooms, also known as veranda staterooms, are usually the largest accommodation option you can get without concierge service or extras.

I recommend this category to all travelers setting sail in the future for one reason: the private balcony.

You can open your curtains and enjoy the sights outside, similar to the experience of staying in an ocean-view stateroom. But in this room type, you can step out onto a balcony and take in the sounds and smells, too.

The rooms' sizes and capacities depend on the ship, but balcony staterooms are usually larger than ocean-view staterooms and tend to sleep up to five guests . Even if the rooms' living spaces aren't substantially bigger, they have the added space of the veranda.

Including the terrace, balcony staterooms on the Disney Fantasy are 246 square feet and are between 214 square feet to 279 square feet on Princess Cruises' fleet.

When my family stayed in a balcony stateroom on a seven-night cruise, we made great use of the outdoor space. On a shorter cruise, where the balcony itself might not get as much use, I would still book this category for my family.

The upgrade was completely worth the price increase, especially because we were traveling with two sets of grandparents .

To make the most of the balcony staterooms, we even turned our individual verandas into one large terrace by having our steward remove the partitions between rooms.

I recently went on a seven-night cruise with my family, and upgrading our accommodation was the best decision of the trip. Sarah Gilliland
