The room was spacious and clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful, even helping to repair our car, which would not start after we arrived. The food was tasty, varied, and plentiful.
Remote location as expected going to a safari. The place was clezn and comfortable...the staff was amazingly friendly and helpful. This was my second time at this hotel and I highly recomend.

Client reviews.
Jongomero and Siwandu were nothing short of paradise. Beautiful settings, unimaginably friendly staff, delicious food (and lots of it) and awesome game viewing. I must also add that Mark at Ras Kutani did a fantastic job of making Christmas special for us.We particular liked how jongo, Siwandu and Ras K were all distinct in style and made efforts to add little personalized touches. We have both travelled far and wide but can honestly say that the level of service (and enjoyment) was the best either of us have ever experienced. * * * * * - R Badenoch
THANK YOU for helping us plan an incredible trip! We had such an amazing time. Siwandu was fantastic. The service was spectacular and so were the guides. Claire at Siwandu deserves special props…we absolutely loved her. * * * * * - I. Witzman
We had a fantastic trip, thanks. We loved the combination of locations (beach / safari / island) and all the resorts were excellent. Siwandu was also excellent, great food again and lovely rooms (our favourite on the holiday). We met some great people there and the hostess was lovely. Unfortunately the rains came early, so we had a few wet days towards the end, but that made for a few fun adventures in the mud. We saw everything we wanted to on safari. * * * * * - D Airey
Of the safari camps, both were incredible. I think we preferred Siwandu, mainly because Claire the camp manager was fantastic and we were incredibly lucky with the game viewing (wild dogs, leopard, lions, elephants as well as all the rest….) * * * * * - H Morris
The trip was FANTASTIC. We saw everything — lots of everything — except rhinos and leopards, neither of which we expected, so no disappointment. We saw lions mating and lions jostling for territory. We sat 2 feet from an elephant and I got to talk to the hippos (my fav animal). The guiding was superb in Siwandu. * * * * * - Gail V-O
We has an AMAZING time on our trip, truly an unforgettable experience and we were thrilled with the whole itinerary. Siwandu was a different kind of experience altogether and our butler Alphonse was absolutely wonderful. We had a fabulous guide, Mohammed, who we were lucky enough to have to ourselves. It made the experience really personal and we were really able to take our time with the drives – we even saw a lion kill a wildebeest, what a sight!! Plus we loved the campfire drinks, and the bbq night – spectacular. The managers were also wonderful and very friendly. * * * * * - A Hughes
Fantastic honeymoon thank you, Siwandu was definitely the highlight, great game – an elephant crossing the lake was a real treat and the food was pretty sensational, how on earth they manage that out in the middle of nowhere I don’t know! * * * * * - Pettit-Mills
We were really taken aback by the views when arrived at the tent.great hosts, especially the way that they talked to everyone around the camp fire good variety of excellent food (and probably the best out of the camps as it had a local twist to it); say why the food was best.. the private honeymoon dinner with champagne was gratefully received! Mohammed was an excellent guide and we were lucky enough to have two private game drives and our own breakfast brunch on the 6.30am * * * * * - Fitzpatrick
Selous(Siwandu) had good tents, and excellent food. * * * * * - Susmita
Incredible venue with incredible staff. This venue was the highlight of our honeymoon. The staff were exceptional at this venue, we had Alfonse as our butler and Apollo as our guide and we couldn’t have been better looked after. The food was amazing – we had breakfast out every morning which was so incredible and then sun downers each afternoon was so special. Apollo was amazing on each drive – he was so knowledgeable and we learnt so much from him. We were so lucky, as got to see every animal we had hoped to. We couldn’t recommend this venue highly enough!! * * * * * - L Sedzikowski

Introduction
Siwandu (formerly Selous Safari Camp) is located in the north of the Selous Game Reserve in Southern Tanzania. Renovated to very high standards, Siwandu continues to operate an authentic and elegant permanent tented camp tucked among the palm trees on the banks of the Rufiji River. The camp is designed to blend in with the spectacular natural scenery in what is one of the most photogenic areas of the Selous Game Reserve.
The camp has the prime position at the centre of the unique riverine and Lake Complex, with the highest concentration of African wildlife and myriad birdlife. There are no fences and no artificial modifications to the natural fauna and so animals wander freely through the camp.
The atmosphere at Siwandu is relaxed and yet wonderfully comfortable. With good attention to detail, the camp staff give guests a real sense of being looked after.
Accommodation
Each of the nine safari tents sits atop its own raised timber platform, affording guests an unmatched experience of the African bush.
The spacious tents are luxuriously appointed, with en suite bathrooms and open air hot-water showers. The camp has its own swimming pool, enabling guests to cool off in the heat of the day.
The chefs prepare the finest cuisine from a well-supplied kitchen. Meals are complemented by a good selection of wines and there is a well-stocked bar.
While guests find that game viewing and communing with nature can readily be achieved without moving from the camp itself, the camp offers full opportunities to get out into the bush to explore more of the Selous Game Reserve, its intriguing topography, its fascinating flora and its teeming wildlife.
Open four-wheeled drive vehicles, specially adapted for close-up game viewing, make for exhilarating early morning and evening forays into the surrounding bush. Experts are guides on hand to explain everything from unusual animal behaviour to rare and elusive species of birds and even the life cycle of termites.

Location of Roho ya Selous
In the heart of Nyerere National Park — the largest reserve in Africa — Roho ya Selous is perfectly positioned for excellent game viewing, close to a key waterway that links Lake Manze to Lake Nzerakera. Here, pods of hippos wallow and fish eagles scan the landscape from their perches. Giraffes wander through camp on their way to the water and impala graze on the grass around our tents.
Nyerere is a different type of environment to the grassy plains of northern Tanzania . This is a marshy landscape of palm trees, lakes and rivers and is home to elephants, buffalos, lions, hippos, leopards and one of the largest populations of wild dogs on the planet. Plus, bird enthusiasts can try and spot the more than 400 recorded bird species, including a good number of Pel’s fishing owls, in the region. Despite the excellent game, there are far fewer visitors here than in the Serengeti , making the safari experience feel much more exclusive.
Simple and stylish
The name Roho ya Selous means ‘heart of the Selous’, and that’s exactly where we are. Balancing adventure with plenty of comfort, the camp offers seasoned travellers an authentic safari experience in Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) .
A typical day on safari at Roho ya Selous
The best time for game viewing is in the cooler early mornings and late afternoons, when animals are at their most active. Depending on the season, your day may start slightly earlier or later. If you have booked a private vehicle, please discuss schedule preferences with your guide.
A day at Roho ya Selous starts with an early wake-up call and a cup of tea or coffee. Have some breakfast at camp or have your meal packed to enjoy on your morning game drive. You’ll be back in camp in time for lunch.
The afternoon is time to rest. Read a book, take a dip in the pool or have a siesta. Refuel with afternoon tea before heading out on to the lake, where you can sip a G&T onboard our boat . Round off the perfect day with drinks around the campfire and a leisurely dinner.
Game drives
We have seven-seater, open-sided game vehicles for exploring further afield in the reserve and getting closer to large herbivores and predators. The vehicles have canvas roofs, power points and fridges — everything needed to stay comfortable out in the bush for as long as you like.
Walking safaris
Head out on foot for an intimate exploration of the Selous. Stop and examine the tiniest creatures, such as ants and butterflies, and learn about tracking animals using their prints and dung. Plus, there’s the excitement of getting close to large animals as they pass by.
One of the things that separates Nyerere from other major Tanzanian parks is its boating safaris . From a safe distance, float past crocodiles on the sandbanks and hippos in the shallows, watching elephants come down to drink and birds nesting on the islands.
Combine a boat safari with a spot of fishing . The rivers hold a good population of tiger fish and various types of catfish.
Family safaris
We warmly welcome families with children over 5 at Roho ya Selous. The ease of access makes the reserve a fuss-free destination. We have a family tent with an enclosed en suite children’s room, ideal for younger kids, and a range of activities to keep the whole family entertained. Please note that guests must be 16 years old to join our walking safaris, but there is no age limit for game drives or boat safaris. Please ask your agent about the option of hiring a private vehicle for your family safari.
What to expect during the year
Nyerere National Park is a brilliant park to visit throughout the year. For the best wildlife viewing, visit between June and October’s dry season. For water-based activities , come from November to March when the rains have filled the rivers. Roho ya Selous is closed for the long rains that fall from March until the end of May.
Why travel at this time
This period is great for boating and fishing, as the rains have recently flooded the rivers. It’s also ideal for birding, with migratory species in the park, and for photography, with lush landscapes and dramatic sunsets and sunrises. Roho ya Selous closes from mid-March, when the park becomes tricky to traverse.
It rains a little in January and February, though not consistently, with the long rains beginning in March. It’s hot and humid, with an average maximum temperature of 30°C/86°F and an average low of 22°C/72°F.
Low Temp: 22°C / 72°F
High Temp: 30°C / 86°F
Rainfall: 191mm / 7.5in
Roho ya Selous is closed until the end of May, reopening in June when the park has dried up again. June is a good month to visit, as it’s just before high season rates kick in and travellers descend into the area.
It’s a little cooler and less humid in June, with an average high of 27°C/81°F and a low of 18°C/64°F.
Low Temp: 18°C / 64°F
High Temp: 27°C / 81°F
Rainfall: 121mm / 0.5in
The dry season is the best time for game viewing as they gather around the waterholes of the Selous. Conditions are clear and sunny.
There’s very little rainfall in the dry season. Temperatures range from a maximum of 26°C/79°F in July to 29°C/84°F in September. The average low hovers from 17°C/63°F to 19°C/66°F.
High Temp: 29°C / 84°F
Rainfall: 11mm / 0.4in
It’s still fairly dry in October. The short rains begin in November, flooding the rivers so water-based activities can resume and reviving the park’s vegetation. The migratory birds begin to arrive from Europe and Asia.
Rains usually begin in November and continue into December, though not continuously. There are enough breaks in the rain to enjoy your game drives. The temperature hits a maximum average of 31°C/88°F in November — the hottest time of year — with an average low of 22°C/72°F.
High Temp: 31°C / 88°F
Rainfall: 69mm / 2.7in
Guest reviews
Roho ya Selous, an Asilia camp, so we knew what to expect and like always overall a fabulous experience with friendly staff making it so special. Again great to have a Tanzanian camp leader (Wilfred) with a lot of insight and doing a fabulous job. After Ruaha where it was dry season, Nyerere was a nice contrast being the rainy season where everything was green with plenty of cubs and pups around that time. The safari started already as soon as we were picked up at the airport.
The Asilia system is amazing with great focus on service and client satisfaction. The camp location is excellent and environmentally conscious. Well trained Tour guides and vehicles in top condition to make a great experience.
We stayed 3 nights as a family with 2 kids aged 11 and 13 and the experience was amazing. The camp is very well located facing a lake where you can see elephants from the camp itself. Room is spacious. Special mention to the staff who is very friendly and caring: the chef, the servers, the guide, the manager. Games are great we could see lot of animals even on the first day.

All the tented rooms are spaced quite far apart to ensure privacy and all are situated along the lake shore. There are no fences and so animals wander freely through the camp. Selous Impala Camp
Set in a prime riverside position in the Selous area of southern Tanzania, Selous Impala Camp is a friendly and relatively well-priced facility, with guest accommodation in 8 tented rooms and providing a good range of wet and dry safari activities. Minimum age 6.
Selous Impala Camp is located in the Selous area.
Selous Impala Camp is located in the Selous area of southern Tanzania.
At over 45,000 square kilometres, the Selous is actually larger than Switzerland and forms a significant part of the enormous 150,000 square kilometre Selous-Niassa ecosystem, the largest tract of wild bush remaining in Africa.
The 70,000 elephants in this ecosystem represent around 8% of the continental total. There are estimated to be 120,000 buffaloes, 100,000 wildebeest, 35,000 zebras, 40,000 hippos and 4,000 lions.
It is the only major game reserve in East Africa to be located down on the humid coastal plateau, which creates an unusually languid and tropical atmosphere.
It is extremely scenic in parts, centred on the Great Rufiji River, which meanders through a network of oxbow lakes and channels. The land is largely flat, with distant hills to give perspective, covered with a wide range of different landscapes, notably acacia and palm forests, marshlands and broad open grasslands.
The wildlife is rich and varied, especially during the Jun-Oct dry season. In fact you should see a broader range of major species than in any other reserve in East Africa, although not in the quantities and concentrations of somewhere like the Serengeti. African wild dogs are a particular speciality.
The reserve is particularly renowned for being the only place in East Africa which offers good quality motorboat safari.
Set in a prime riverside position in the Selous area of southern Tanzania, Selous Impala Camp is a friendly and relatively well-priced facility, with guest accommodation in 8 tented rooms and providing a good range of wet and dry safari activities.
Getting there
The property is accessed by flights into the local Selous airstrip, with connections from Serengeti, Arusha, Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Ruaha and Katavi.
From the airstrip it is a safari drive of around 30 minutes to the camp.
We usually include all the connecting transport for your trip unless you specifically ask us not to.
The camp is centred on an elevated main building, stepping down to a swimming pool area.
Selous Impala Camp is independently owned by Italian Gillie Zanacchi, a lovely Italian fellow who is passionate about the Selous and runs his camp in a professional but pleasantly uncommercial way. The camp is not directly related to any other properties.
We have always found that there is a particularly good buzz amongst the staff here. The management team is usually a mix of sharp young Italians and Tanzanians. The team spirit is tangible and very refreshing.
It is a reasonably elegant and comfortable place, set on the north bank of the Great Rufiji River.
Public areas are contained within a raised open-sided building which steps down to a ground floor bar and campfire on the riverbank. To one side there is a nice swimming pool area.
Guest accommodation is in eight tented rooms, raised on platforms above the river.
Animals in camp
One aspect we particularly like about this camp is the amount of wildlife that passes through, especially giraffes, elephants and hippos, although that does mean you have to be very careful when walking between buildings.
Dining options
The food service at Selous Impala Camp is usually very good quality.
Meals are usually served at a single large table, in traditional safari camp style.
Private tables and special meals are not usually a problem.
Special diets such as vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, kosher and other variations should not be a problem, so long as you let us know at the time of booking.
Power and connectivity
Child policy
The minimum age at this property is six years old.
The camp is not specifically geared up for children, is unfenced and could be potentially very dangerous. Adult supervision is essential at all times.
Although the staff and guides will naturally try to tailor the experience to suit all guests, there are no special facilities for children, who are obliged to behave with due consideration for other guests.
There may be higher age limits on certain more risky activities such as walking safari.
Tipping guide
In Africa tipping is definitely not obligatory, but it is commonplace. If you feel that the service provided has been excellent, then you may consider giving tips as follows ...
Lead guide : USD 10 per guest per day Assistant guide : USD 5 per guest per day General staff tip box : USD 5 per guest per day
Staff understand that guests of different nationalities come very different tipping cultures and adjust their expectations accordingly, so you really should tip as you feel comfortable.
Tips are usually given in cash, USD, EUR, GBP and ZAR being the most common currencies. If you are running short of cash or prefer not to carry so much currency, it is often possible to settle tips by bank card.
Guest accommodation is in seven large tented Rooms with indoor bathrooms ...
... plus one larger Family Room with two bedrooms.
Activities include vehicle safari, motorboat safari, walking safari and bush meals.
Selous Impala Camp provides access to a good range of safari activities ...
Vehicle safari
Vehicle safari is usually the best method for viewing wildlife in the bush. The majority of your up-close animal experiences are likely to come about in this way, since the animals are quite habituated to the presence of vehicles and do not feel threatened.
Drives are usually done as morning and afternoon excursions, but we strongly recommend that you push for full day safaris since the park is varied and interesting enough to warrant further exploration.
Unusually for Tanzania, off-road driving is permitted, so it is much easier to make the most of important sightings.
Of the predators, lions are the most commonly seen, with leopards and African wild-dogs being more occasional sightings.
Motorboat safari
A real highlight of the Selous is the motorboat safari. This may not be the only reserve in East Africa to offer this kind of river safari, but it is certainly the best.
As well as the obvious opportunity to view hippos and crocodiles, encounters with elephants along the riverbank are not unusual and the birding can be excellent.
It should be possible to head upstream to Steigler's Gorge, an atmospheric spot where the river becomes hemmed in by forested hillsides.
Walking safari
Walking safari in this particular area tends to be quite a gentle affair, a chance to get slightly more immersed in the bush and to learn about the finer points of flora and fauna.
We do not expect these walks to include deliberate approaches to potentially dangerous wildlife such as elephants and lions, which are rarely done in Selous. For serious high adrenaline walking safari you generally need to head to the specialist camps of Ruaha, or further afield to Zambia or Zimbabwe.
Most camps do their walking early morning, before the heat of the day has risen, sometimes ending up with a bush breakfast in a remote location before continuing on by vehicle.
The primary activity is vehicle safari inside the reserve during daylight hours.
The camp also offers high quality motorboat safari out on the Rufiji River.
Conditions are usually best during the Jun-Oct dry season, but there are very good reasons to visit during other months.
The main potential downsides the outdoorsy camp, modest visitor traffic, poaching issues and adverse weather conditions especially Oct-May.
Selous Impala Camp, like all properties, has a long list of potential downsides. Please do not be unnecessarily put off by this section. Our only intention in raising these issues is to ensure that you get to the best and most appropriate places and that your expectations are met and hopefully exceeded ...
High prices
The main problem with this property from most people's perspective are the high prices during the main safari seasons.
The camps out in the Serengeti are inherently pricey due to the complicated logistics, their small size and the high park fees and taxes that are levied upon them by government.
It is important to realise that Tanzania is not a wealthy country and tourism is the main industry. The park fees that are produced enable a large proportion of the total land area to be maintained under conservation. The taxes go to subsidise infrastructure, education and other government projects across the country.
Relative to other properties in this area, this camp is actually towards the middle of the range, but remains pricey in absolute terms.
Rates during low seasons may be considerably lower, so that may be worth considering. Check the seasonality section above for more details.
It is worth noting that there are sometimes long stay discounts available, as well as discounts for combining with other camps under the same ownership. Please ask us for more information.
Lack of availability
Shortage of room availability is often a major issue when planning a safari. These premium Serengeti camps are heavily over-demanded during the main Dec-Mar and Jun-Oct safari seasons. It really is best to book a year ahead if you want to be sure to get space in the very best properties.
Shared safari
In this camp separate groups of guests are often obliged to join together when out on safari. This is not necessarily a negative, sometimes it can be a great chance to get to meet some very interesting people and the best camp managers usually work hard to ensure guest compatibility. But some guests do find it to be a considerable negative.
The issue can be officially side-stepped by paying a private safari supplement, but this bumps the cost considerably.
Traffic issues
Despite the fact that Selous is so remote and little-visited, the limited road network and concentration of lodges does mean that there can be relatively minor issues with vehicle traffic during the high season.
The problems usually come when there are lions or wild-dogs in an easily accessible location and word spreads over the radio of its location.
If you are particularly sensitive to this issue, then you simply need to make your feelings known and it should be easy enough to avoid other vehicles.
Weaker green season wildlife
During the Nov-May green season the wildlife viewing in this area is likely to be considerably weaker, as the rains fill seasonal pans in the hinterland, enabling the high dry season concentrations of animals to disperse away from the river.
The price of the camp is considerably reduced during this time by way of compensation and the experience here can still be strong, with the bush being full of flowers and baby animals.
There are also much lower guest occupancy rates, so the camp experience can be more intimate and the service more tailor-made.
But the core wildlife interaction is likely to be significantly reduced.
Adverse weather
Unusually Selous is down on the coastal plateau, which means that the climate is hot and humid, rather than hot and dry. This can have a very significant effect on comfort.
If you are sensitive to high temperatures at night, then we suggest that you choose a camp with air-conditioning (which this camp does not), or head to an alternative safari location.
The other important issue is rainfall, which can really hamper safari activities.
The short rains are centred on November and are usually enough for the landscapes to turn from ochre to green and start to become filled with flowers and baby animals. There is an outside chance that the rains will be torrential and run right on through December, causing significant disruption, something which tends to happen about one in seven years.
The long rains are centred on April and are usually strong and reliable, occasionally spilling significantly into March and May. Although the prevailing conditions remain warm and sunny, heavy rainfall is likely to have significant adverse effects on safari operations most years.
