I’ve spent collectively over six weeks in Ireland during my visits, and one of the places in Ireland that captured my heart is Ashford Castle.

Visiting this incredible castle is like stepping into a real-life fairytale!

In this post, I’m sharing everything you need to know about visiting Ashford Castle and some of my favorite pictures from our stay.

Let’s start with a brief overview of Ashford Castle’s rich history.

Ashford Castle, nestled in the stunning County Mayo in the west of Ireland, boasts a rich and captivating history that spans centuries.

Originally built in the 13th century as a defensive stronghold, the castle has witnessed countless events and transformations throughout its existence.

The castle’s earliest roots can be traced back to 1228 when it was constructed by the Anglo-Norman de Burgos family.

Over the years, Ashford Castle passed through the hands of various noble families, each leaving their mark on the castle’s architecture and legacy.

In the early 19th century, the Guinness family, famous for their brewery empire, took ownership of the castle and transformed it into a luxurious estate.

During the ownership of the Guinness family, significant renovations and expansions were carried out, turning Ashford Castle into a grand Victorian mansion.

Where is Ashford Castle Hotel located?

Ashford Castle is located in County Mayo, Ireland, on the County Galway border. Nestled near the picturesque village of Cong, the castle sits on the shores of Lough Corrib, Ireland’s second-largest lake.

The serene setting of Ashford Castle is surrounded by lush countryside, rolling hills, and enchanting woodlands, which provide a tranquil escape from the outside world.

This is one of the best photo spots in Ireland !

There are several transportation options available to reach Ashford Castle.

The nearest international airport is Ireland West Airport Knock, located approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) away, offering convenient connections to major cities.

Additionally, Galway Airport and Shannon Airport are also within reasonable distance.

For those traveling by train, the nearest railway station is in Galway City, with regular services connecting to other parts of Ireland.

Ashford Castle is easily accessible by road as well, with well-maintained routes leading to the castle from major cities and towns.

The castle’s location in County Mayo allows visitors to explore the scenic wonders of western Ireland.

This includes the rugged Connemara region and the stunning landscapes of the Wild Atlantic Way.

Accommodations at Ashford Castle

Ashford Castle provides luxurious accommodations that are designed to offer a comfortable and elegant stay.

The Ashford Castle rooms and suites at the castle are beautifully decorated, combining classic elements with modern amenities.

The rooms are spacious and well-furnished, featuring cozy beds, fine fabrics, and stylish furniture.

Many guest rooms offer lovely views of the castle grounds, the peaceful Lough Corrib, or the scenic countryside.

The suites provide an extra level of luxury, with separate living areas, beautiful fireplaces, and antique furnishings.

Some suites even have private terraces or balconies, offering a peaceful retreat with stunning views.

We chose to stay in a Deluxe Lake View Room, and it was gorgeous! The room’s interior was magical, and our view overlooked the castle gardens and the lake as well.

It would have been tempting to spend all of our time in the room if it weren’t for all of the fantastic things there were to do at the castle.

Making reservations

Reservations can be made directly through the Ashford Castle website .

This is where you will find all of the different room options available, as well as check availability for the dates you need.

You’ll also have the option to book breakfast, dinner, and special dining as a package with your room.

We chose to do that bed & breakfast package and pay for our other meals separately.

Next, you can book extras like spa treatments, activities, or cakes and flowers for special occasions.

Although most things can be added on after your arrival at the castle, availability can quickly fill up, so booking in advance is better.

Activities and experiences at Ashford Castle

One of my favorite things about staying at Ashford Castle is how many incredible things you can do during your visit!

Here is a brief overview featuring just a few of the activities you can enjoy during your stay.

Outdoor experiences

The Ashford Estate covers 350 acres of woodlands, castle grounds, and the banks of Lough Corrib. There is no shortage of outdoor activities to enjoy here!

Take a private hawk walk

One of the most popular experiences at Ashford Castle is falconry. Falconry is a unique activity that allows individuals to interact with majestic birds of prey, such as falcons, hawks, and owls.

Ashford Castle offers a private Hawk Walk experience , where guests can take a guided stroll through the castle’s enchanting grounds with a trained hawk perched on their gloved hand.

During the Hawk Walk, guests can witness the awe-inspiring flight of these magnificent birds and learn about their characteristics, hunting techniques, and the historical significance of falconry.

It is a remarkable and educational experience that provides a deeper appreciation for these fascinating creatures and their relationship with humans throughout history.

Book an equestrian experience

Ashford Castle has a really great equestrian center on the property.

You can book various equestrian activities , including private horseback riding lessons, trail rides, and carriage rides.

I’ve had the pleasure of trail riding here twice now, and I can promise it is a magical experience!

Riding English style was an adjustment since I grew up riding Western style, but I learned quickly.

All the necessary equipment was provided, including gloves, boots, and a helmet.

Our horses were so cute, and each one had its own unique personality. Our riding instructor paired us with horses best suited to our riding level.

At Ashford Castle, everyone can enjoy horse riding with friendly guides and well-trained horses.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, you will enjoy exploring the beautiful countryside around the castle.

Ride along twisting trails through the woods or enjoy the stunning lakeside views.

And getting pictures astride your horses with the castle in the background will create memories that will last a lifetime.

Try your hand at archery or clay shooting

If you consider yourself a marksman, consider booking an archery or clay shooting experience . Both take place at the castle’s dedicated shooting range.

While we didn’t try the archery, we did give clay shooting a go and it was admittedly a lot more fun than I anticipated it being!

Both of us participated, but surprisingly, I was really good at it. I even shocked the instructor, haha!

I chalk it up to beginner’s luck, but it was fun all the same.

Our instructor was really fun and taught us all of the different angles and techniques for shooting the clays.

If you’re looking for something unique and sporty, try this!

Go out on Lake Corrib

Lake Corrib offers a myriad of exciting activities for visitors to enjoy, including kayaking, fishing, and lake cruises, just to name a few.

One of the popular choices is kayaking , where you can paddle along the tranquil waters of the lake, surrounded by breathtaking scenery.

Whether you’re a novice or an experienced kayaker, Lake Corrib provides the perfect backdrop for peaceful exploration.

Fishing enthusiasts will find Lake Corrib a haven for angling. Known for its abundant salmon and trout, the lake offers ample opportunities to cast your line and try your luck from the shore or on a boat trip.

As you sip on a selection of fine teas, expertly brewed and served in delicate china cups, you’ll be treated to an array of delectable treats. Included are finger sandwiches with various fillings, freshly baked scones with clotted cream and preserves, and various delicate pastries and cakes, each crafted with precision and artistry.

The attentive staff at Ashford Castle will ensure that every detail of your afternoon tea is perfect, from the elegantly tiered serving stand to the warm and welcoming service. Relax and savor each bite, engaging in conversation or simply enjoying the atmosphere.

Afternoon tea at Ashford Castle is a time-honored tradition that invites you to slow down, appreciate the finer things in life, and create cherished memories in the enchanting surroundings of this iconic castle.

Play a round of billiards

Playing billiards at Ashford Castle is a fun and entertaining activity that you can enjoy with friends and family.

Inside the billiards room , you’ll find a beautiful billiards table with all the necessary equipment.

Take turns using the cue stick to hit the balls and try to pocket them into the designated holes.

It’s a game of skill and strategy, where you’ll need to plan your shots and aim carefully to score points.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced player, the billiards room provides an enjoyable environment for friendly games and competition.

This was our first time playing billiards, and we found it to be a lot of fun!

Some local Irish visitors taught us the rules of the game, and we enjoyed learning from them.

Additionally, the billiards room itself is stunning! Definitely plan to stop in here during your exploration of the castle, even if you don’t have time to play a round.

Catch a movie at the cinema

Did you know Ashford Castle has its own small cinema ? It’s quite charming and luxurious, with plush red velvet chairs for maximum comfort.

If you wish, you can even hire this 32-seat theater for a private viewing and have the whole place to yourself.

You can watch various movies here, with a different film being played each night.

Perhaps the most popular one is The Quiet Man, starring John Wayne, which was actually filmed on the Ashford Castle estate!

Fresh popcorn is complimentary and is available to all hotel guests. Even if you don’t plan to stay for a movie, stop in to grab some popcorn!

Take an Ashford Castle tour

Ashford Castle is quite large, and it’s easy to get turned around in the various levels and hallways.

I recommend asking for a castle tour upon your arrival to familiarize yourself better with the castle for the remainder of your stay.

Not only will you have a better idea of how to find your way around, but you’ll also learn more about the castle’s history and hear stories about the various rooms.

Our guide even took us down to the wine cellar, which was pretty neat. We really enjoyed our tour!

Other fun things to do in Ashford Castle include reading a book in the library, playing a game of chess by the fireplace, and listening to beautiful live music in the late evening.

Dining at Ashford Castle

From exquisite fine dining experiences to casual fare infused with local flavors, the Ashford Castle restaurants offer a range of exceptional culinary options to satisfy every palate.

Additionally, we found the restaurants here to be very accommodating to those with dietary restrictions.

There are gluten-free and vegan options at every restaurant. Be sure to mention any dietary needs during your booking, and also mention them to your waiter.

There are seven Ashford Castle restaurants:

• The Dungeon

George V Dining Room

The connaught room, cullen’s at the cottage, the drawing room, stanley’s, the prince of wales bar, the dungeon restaurant.

Hidden beneath Ashford Castle lies the Dungeon Restaurant , an extraordinary dining experience that transports guests to a bygone era.

Descend into the castle’s depths and immerse yourself in a captivating dungeon surrounded by stone walls and flickering candlelight.

The menu here features traditional Irish dishes. Guests can expect a blend of classic and contemporary flavors, with options ranging from succulent meats and seafood to vegetarian dishes.

Each plate is thoughtfully designed to provide a remarkable dining experience within the captivating setting of the castle’s underground sanctuary.

The George V Dining Room , named for King George V, at Ashford Castle, is the fanciest dining room in the castle.

Named after the former king of England, this dining room exudes timeless elegance with its grand crystal chandeliers, ornate ceilings, and luxurious furnishings.

The menu features a symphony of gourmet creations, showcasing the finest local and seasonal ingredients and offering a fine dining experience fit for royalty.

You can choose to indulge in a 5-course meal or order a la carte.

Note: Men are required to wear a jacket to dinner, and dressing up is strongly encouraged for everyone.

The George V Dining Room is also where breakfast is served every morning.

You can choose from various options, including a traditional Irish breakfast, omelets, pancakes, and more. We thoroughly enjoyed our breakfasts here!

The Connaught Room is mainly used for afternoon tea , which I briefly mentioned earlier.

This stunning dining room includes features like floor-to-ceiling windows, an ornate wooden fireplace, and a stunning Donegal Crystal chandelier.

During afternoon tea at Ashford Castle, you can experience a delightful array of finger sandwiches, an extensive selection of hot teas, and an assortment of freshly baked goods and treats, including mouth-watering scones and an enticing assortment of pastries.

This experience allows guests to immerse themselves in a truly enchanting tea-time experience that is second to none.

Set in a quaint thatched cottage adjacent to the castle, the Cullen’s at the Cottage restaurant offers a cozy and inviting ambiance.

Guests can indulge in hearty and flavorsome dishes that celebrate the best of Irish cuisine and explore additional worldwide dishes.

Fun fact: This cottage used to house the Cong Cinema. It was also where the very first viewing of The Quiet Man was shown, even before it was released in Hollywood!

The Drawing Room is perfect for a quick lunch or a very early dinner. The food here was really delicious!

While drinks are served here all day, food is only available from 12-6 and serves a variety of soups, sandwiches, and a few main courses.

The main draw to this dining location is the gorgeous views of the castle grounds and Lake Corrib out of the massive windows.

You’ll find yourself tempted to linger for a bit after your meal to take in the stunning landscape.

Stanley’s has a bright and fun atmosphere. This restaurant only seats nine people at a bar overlooking an open kitchen.

This darling restaurant is decorated like a diner with green and white wallpaper, green barstools, and a picture of Elvis Presley hanging on the wall.

Reservations are not accepted here, and there is no dress code, making it an informal and fun place to grab a bite to eat.

The menu features fresh options, including salads, sandwiches, and burgers.

And finally, we have the Prince of Wales Bar .

This gorgeous room is decorated with rich shades of green and ornate wooden paneling, with a stunning chandelier in the center.

The Prince of Wales visited in 1905 and this room was used as his private bar during his stay at Ashford Castle.

Today, this lounge is a great place to hang out for a relaxing drink. We enjoyed iced teas here while we waited for our room to be ready for check-in.

Note: There are also additional accommodations and dining options at The Lodge at Ashford Castle on the estate.

Tips for your stay at Ashford Castle

Here are a few things you should know to help make your stay at Ashford Castle more enjoyable!

Make as many reservations as you can in advance

Make as many reservations as possible in advance to avoid disappointment and give yourself a better experience.

This includes dining reservations, spa services, and experiences you may want to enjoy on the estate.

Things tend to fill up very quickly and might be booked entirely by the time you arrive.

Additionally, some activities require pre-booking so that adequate staff may be available.

Most of the castle is only available for guests staying at the castle

Most of the castle is only available for guests staying at the castle, so please don’t show up hoping to explore and leave. You will be disappointed if so!

Some of the restaurants are available for those not staying at the castle, but they must be booked in advance.

Even if you dine in the castle, there will still be off-limits areas to those who aren’t overnight guests.

Prepare to be treated like royalty

We weren’t quite prepared for how we would be treated during our stay at Ashford Castle.

We might as well have been royalty in a palace! Everyone was so polite, and yes, even more so than your typical Irish!

From the gatekeeper and check-in hostess to the restaurant servers and activity guides, all of the staff treated us like we were their most honored guests.

It was very nice, but it also took some getting used to, haha!

What should you pack for a visit to Ashford Castle?

While most of the dress codes at Ashford Castle are very lax, there are still some things you will want to plan for.

The George V Dining Room is the only place we encountered an actual dress code, and that required the gentlemen to wear a suit jacket to dinner.

However, just because there isn’t a set dress code in most places doesn’t mean that you won’t feel underdressed in some settings.

We stayed here during our 3-week trip in Ireland and only had carry-on luggage, so we were limited on space.

We wore nice tops and jeans and sometimes felt a little out of place. During our next visit to Ashford Castle, we will find enough room to pack some nicer clothes.

That being said, we saw visitors in all types of outfits, from suits and ball gowns to more casual attire as we wore.

Make sure to pack appropriate clothes for any activities you may want to enjoy during your stay at the castle.

Remember that Ireland’s weather can be very temperamental, haha!

How long should you plan to stay at Ashford Castle?

While you can stay for just one night at Ashford Castle, I recommend staying for at least two nights.

As you can see in this post, there are many things to do, and you won’t be able to fit them into a super short visit.

That being said, Ashford Castle is a bit pricey for the average traveler. If it’s only in your budget to stay for one night, that’s still better than not at all!

I would recommend a 2-3 night stay if you can afford it both time and money-wise.

When is the best time of year to visit Ashford Castle?

In my personal opinion, the beginning of Fall is the best time to visit Ashford Castle.

The changing leaves are beautiful, and the primary tourist season is ending.

This means fewer visitors and a quieter castle. Additionally, prices tend to be a bit cheaper.

Shopping at Ashford Castle

There are two places where you can shop on the estate. The first is the Boutique at Ashford Castle , which includes a variety of Irish jewelry, clothing, and collectibles. This is a more upscale shopping experience and a great place to find something to wear to dinner, should you desire.

There is also an art gallery across the hallway with beautiful paintings drawn by local artists. If you choose to purchase a painting, you can ship it home so that you don’t have to take it with you on the rest of your trip.

The second place to shop on the estate is Mrs. Tea’s Boutique & Bakery , just a short walk across the bridge from Ashford Castle. This darling boutique has a wide range of items to choose from and is where I recommend grabbing your souvenirs from. This is also an excellent option for those visiting the estate but not staying in the castle.

Private events and weddings at Ashford Castle

Ashford Castle is a magical location and would be an absolutely dreamy wedding destination!

The castle offers wedding packages best suited for intimate weddings.

Whether you’re getting married at Ashford Castle or spending your honeymoon there, the Reagan Presidential Suite (named after US President Ronald Reagan after his visit) is about as spectacular as it gets!

After all, this is one of the most romantic destinations in all of Ireland!

You can also rent certain parts of the castle (or even the entire castle!) for private events.

Closing thoughts about Ashford Castle in Ireland

Ashford Castle Hotel Ireland is one of the best castle hotels in the world and is for sure the best castle in Mayo County!

Staying here is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and is well worth the price tag.

Also, don’t assume this castle experience is for couples only. Ashford Castle is one of the best family resorts in Europe !

Nestled into the stunning Mayo countryside is the impressive 350 acre, 800 year old, Ashford Castle. Ashford Castle

Ashford Castle, surrounded by the immense lawns and beautiful forests of its 350 acre private estate, overlooking the sparkling waters and picturesque islands of Lough Corrib, is so grand, so beautiful, and so magical, that it is hard to believe your imagination is not playing tricks on you.  

Yet real it is.  In the 13th century a monastery stood on this site, but this was replaced by a castle which became the home of the Guinness brewing family in 1715. They massively extended the house and estate over the next two hundred years and in 1939 it became one of Ireland’s most impressive and renowned hotels.

The splendour of the setting and the exterior is more than matched by the lavishly decorated interiors. These boast ornate fireplaces, wood panelled walls, vaulted ceilings, crystal chandeliers and huge staircases, as well as rich fabrics and antique furnishings loving accumulated over hundreds of years by those with excellent taste and deep pockets.  Not surprisingly it is regarded as one of the most magical wedding venues in all Ireland.

Guests dine in the George V Restaurant, built by the Guinness family to host the Prince of Wales in 1906. This is one of the premiere Castle Restaurants in Ireland, graced by the exquisite cuisine of Chef Stefan Matz. More informal dining is provided in Cullen’s Cottage Restaurant beside the river that runs through the estate, or in the castle’s atmospheric dungeons. The Drawing Room also serves light meals and snacks during the day, as well as a magnificent traditional Afternoon Tea.

The Prince of Wales bar, also created for the visit of the heir to the English throne, makes a wonderful setting for a relaxing drink.  Given the castle’s previous owners the signature cocktail is Black Velvet – equal parts of Champagne and Guinness. 

Each of the castle’s 83 rooms and suites is individually designed, some with four poster beds, open fireplaces and claw foot bath tubs.   Many of the original features have been preserved but all are equipped with modern amenities including Wi-Fi and interactive TV.

Because the castle was for so long the private estate of wealthy families who loved their hunting, shooting and fishing guests enjoy a brilliant choice of activities. There’s some of the best salmon, trout and pike fishing in all Ireland, as well as a splendidly equipped falconry and equestrian centre.  Golfers can play the estate’s 9-hole parkland course and the castle is within easy reach of some of the world’s finest links.  There’s boating, cruising water skiing and kayaking on the lake, as well as tennis, cycling clay pigeon shooting and archery.  For the less energetic there’s no shortage of enchanting walks, and a luxurious spa.

An Inside Look at Ireland’s Ashford Castle 

It’s a good thing there’s a lot of room at  Ashford Castle , particularly for awards. 

In this year’s Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards, Ashford Castle was ranked the Number 7 Best Resort in Europe. It was the winner of Sustainability Initiative Of The Year – Communities at The Travel Industry Awards 2022. It was voted top in hotels at the Bar of the Year Awards 2022. Travel + Leisure readers voted the Red Carnation property No. 1 in its Best Hotel Resorts in the UK and Ireland list. It continued to rate five stars in Forbes Travel Guide 2022, and from U.S. News, it is ranked 4th Best Hotel in Europe list. In 2021, it was voted Ireland’s Best Hotel Spa in World Spa Awards 2021.

Forbes Travel Guide writes, “Set on a sprawling, 350-acre estate on the banks of Lough Corrib, Ashford Castle’s grounds are nothing short of epic — think green and wild Irish woodland, serene lakeside views, and the crowning glory, a majestic turreted castle that dates back nearly 800 years. Inside, the service is as warm and welcoming as the luxury hotel’s crackling open fires.”

It’s an accurate description. You’re greeted with a libation to warm you up as you marvel at the grandeur of stepping into history. The 800-year-old castle is the former home of the Guinness family. It has hosted The Prince of Wales (who later became King George V), President Ronald Reagan, Senator Ted Kennedy, as well as countless celebrities and CEOs. It’s estimated Red Carnation has spent over $100 million since buying the resort in 2013.

It’s integral to the local economy, with around 500 employees, and popular with private jet flyers. About 300 arrivals per year. 

In terms of service, Forbes says, “Whether it’s kitting you out with a wax jacket and boots for a hawk walk, arranging a wine-tasting experience in the cellar, or giving a bespoke treatment in the spa, no request is too large, no detail is too small, and discretion is always paramount.”

I can say you will feel like Lord and Lady of the Manor, and if you ask a question about where something is, one of the staff will happily take you through the labyrinth of hallways, giving you a bit of history on the way.

There are 83 individually designed rooms and suites, a trademark of the Red Carnation Hotels where matriarch Bea Tollman and daughter Vicki personally oversee every element down to the smallest touches.

There’s an executive golf course, horseback riding, biking, hiking, boating, falconry, clay pigeon shooting, or relaxing. 

Ireland West Knock Airport (NOC – 7,546 ft. runway) is the closest airport serving private jets, 40 miles away. Shannon Airport (SNN – 10,495 sq. ft. runway) is 84 miles and offers pre-clearance to over 200 U.S. airports.

Accommodations

Of the 83 keys, 77 are varying size rooms, which in some cases are akin to suites. For example, Deluxe Family Queen Rooms have two queen beds and oversize bathrooms. 

Reagan Presidential Suite

Bedroom: 14.9ft x 25.4ft   Sitting area: 12.6ft x 18.5ft  Main bathroom: 5.3ft x 20.4ft  Small bathroom: 4ft x 5.3ft

Named after President Reagan, who stayed at the castle in 1984 as a personal friend of former owner John A. Mulcahy, the Reagan Presidential Suite is located in the oldest wing of the castle. It features the original fireplace, an antique George III-style four-poster bed, original artwork, individually sourced antiques, and spectacular views of Lough Corrib.

The split-level suite offers two bathrooms and can be combined with two adjacent rooms – the Kennedy Suite and a Corrib Lake View Room – to become a private three-bedroom wing of the castle.

Kennedy Suite

Bedroom: 15.4ft x 24.9ft with 15ft high ceilings  Bathroom: 7.5ft x 17ft 

Named after U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy, who stayed at Ashford in the early 1980s, the Kennedy Suite (one of the Castle’s exceptional Staterooms) is located in the oldest wing of the castle and features an impressive selection of antique furniture, including a 19th-century walnut bed, an early 18th century Spanish Armoire and an early Victorian Rosewood center table.

The Kennedy Suite enjoys spectacular views over Lough Corrib and can be combined with the Reagan Presidential Suite to complete a private three-bedroom wing of the castle.

There are six Staterooms – I stayed in Room 430 – and each features traditional elegance and comfort with modern amenities. I’m not sure if a working gas fireplace is the former or the latter, but either way, it was a perfect scene-seter.

The staterooms all feature high ceilings with views of Lough Corrib or the River Cong. 

The Staterooms are all located in the oldest part of the castle, dating back to the 13th and 17th centuries. 

Rooms contain feature beds and original fireplaces with beautiful antique furniture. They also have large bathrooms with heated floors.

You can request but not reserve a specific Stateroom.

The Hideaway Cottage

This former boathouse dates to the Guinness era and is situated a stone’s throw from the castle on the shores of Lough Corrib. Surrounded by private gardens with lake views, guests enjoy the soothing sound of lapping lake waters. Access to the cottage is through secure gates.

The Cottage has been lovingly restored; the unique design uses reclaimed materials such as stone and old fireplace lintels from the Estate. The Cottage features include hand-crafted parquet flooring, original artwork, lush fabrics, and a blue Murano glass chandelier. Custom furniture pieces include French Empire marquetry chests of drawers, a 20th-century four-fold European canvas screen, and a late 19th-century pair of walnut armchairs covered in tapestry by Brunschwig & Fils.

There is no shortage of venues to eat, drink, or be merry at Ashford Castle.

George V Dining Room

In honor of the future King’s visit in 1905, the Guinness family built a special dining room that still bears the George V name.

With rich, paneled walls and twinkling Waterford Crystal chandeliers, there is a grand sense of occasion. Recently, George V Dining Room earned Wine Spectator’s 2020 Best of Award of Excellence. For the ultimate experience, go for the Tasting Menu.

The Dungeon

As its name would suggest, the restaurant is on the lower ground floor of the castle. The bistro-style menu focuses on traditional Irish cuisine beneath the historic curved stone ceiling. 

The menu includes Smoked Skeaghanore Duck Salad; Beef Carpaccio with Aged Parmesan, Parmesan Crisp, Nasturtium, and Charcoal Oil; Fresh Dingle Crab Cakes; Dooncastle Oysters; St Tola Goat’s Cheese Salad; Lamb Neck Irish Stew, and Killary Mussels.

Cullen’s at the Cottage

This traditional thatched cottage – which used to be Cong Cinema, showing films on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the first place to show The Quiet Man even before it was shown in Hollywood – today provides a relaxed dining experience. 

International and local dishes inspired are inspired by Red Carnation owner Beatrice Tollman, including her signature dish Chicken Peri Peri. It is slow-cooked in a rotisserie oven in the main dining area. Cullen’s is just a short stroll over the bridge from the castle. 

The Drawing Room

As you enter The Drawing Room, you’ll immediately be struck by the views across the manicured lawns across the expansive Lough Corrib. It’s an ideal setting for morning coffee and light lunches from the bar menu.

Think Traditional Fish and Chips; Fillet of Wild Cod in Beer Batter – Pickled Cucumber; Breast of Buttermilk; Ashford Kitchen Beef Burger, and signature Atlantic Fish Cakes.

Stanley’s gives an American, Elvis Presley-inspired diner experience with a twist where a mahogany-and-marble counter bar overlooks an open kitchen. 

The Connaught Room

The lough-facing Connaught Room provides a venue to enjoy private dining or a traditional Afternoon Tea – a ritual that extends back to 1868 at Ashford Castle when Lord and Lady Ardilaun would take Afternoon Tea to discuss the events of the morning and the plans for that evening.

The Prince of Wales Bar

Built in the late 1800s, the bar is to this day reminiscent of its fascinating past, with its opulent fabrics, fine wood paneling, traditional furnishings, and original fireplace creating a warm and welcoming ambiance – the perfect place to enjoy your favorite tipple or a pint of Guinness. In 1905 the bar was visited by the Prince of Wales, who subsequently became George V of England.

Billiards Room & Cigar Terrace

At the Billiards Room, partake in a game of billiards, sink into comfy chairs or enjoy Irish tapas. Located on a rooftop corner of the castle, discover the Cigar Terrace with fantastic views overlooking the River Cong and beyond. 

With a feature awning, locally made in the village of Cong, and low glass tables with wrought iron chairs, the Cigar Terrace is a beautifully designed space with a flagstone floor in which to relax and enjoy a whiskey, cognac, cigar, or simply to enjoy relaxing in a wonderful setting overlooking the river Cong. It can also be reserved for private parties.

The focus is on restoring beauty and balance through treatments and spa journeys personalized for you. Afterward, unwind and visually indulge in the three exquisite seashell chandeliers and a mesmerizing Tree of Life mural stretching the length of the relaxation pool.

Estate Activities

Both Clark and Waldon say the Ashford Castle Experience is as much about the activities as the equally amazing castle you will be staying in. There’s no shortage of what you can do, and both say you can easily stay for an entire week, particularly if you are a repeat visitor to Ireland. 

Situated on the banks of Lough Corrib and the River Cong is one of Ireland’s most famous fisheries. Covering 44,000 acres, Lough Corrib is the largest of the three lakes in the area and is well known for its brown trout, salmon, and pike fishing.

For competent fishermen, try fishing on nearby Lough Mask and Lough Carra or further afield in Connemara. The Cong River at the hotel is an excellent option for very experienced and able-bodied salmon fishermen. Traditional hand-crafted 19ft clinker wooden boats are used, and all fishing gear is supplied. 

Discover the ancient form of falconry at the oldest established Falconry School in Ireland. The one-hour private Hawk Walks gives you the opportunity to fly your very own Harris Hawks under the guidance of a private instructor. After you have been introduced to your hawks, you’ll set off into the woodlands to fly your hawks as they follow you from tree to tree through the woods before swooping down to land on your gloved fist. 

Clay Shooting & Archery

Enjoy this ancient sport played by kings and lords for centuries. The indoor and outdoor center means this activity is not weather dependent. Set up according to the National British Grand Championship guidelines, it uses rubber 3D targets and arrows that are the only ones of their kind in Ireland.

Cycling and Kayaking

The Ashford Estate itself has some great cycling trails and the countryside, with its relatively quiet roads and spectacular scenery, is a cyclist’s idea of heaven.  Kayak on the River Cong accompanied by your very own experienced guide. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon and is suitable for all ages and levels of fitness. 

Woodland paths and spectacular scenery from the saddle will captivate novice and experienced riders alike. From the shores of Lough Corrib, Lough Mask and into the mountains of Connemara to the west, the area couldn’t be more magical for horseback riding.

Situated within easy walking distance of the castle, trail rides and lessons are available for all ages and abilities and are accompanied by an experienced guide. Hard hats and Jodhpur boots are provided. There are also pony rides for your junior equestrians.

Zip-Lining and Tree Climbing

Perhaps one of the most surprising offers is Zip-Lining and Tree Climbing. Your journey will take you through trees such as Beech, Oak, Monterey pines, Scots pine, and European fir trees. There are up to 20 obstacles and seven zip lines split between three courses. It’s suitable for both adults and younger adventurers alike.

Paddle Boarding

Explore and tour Ashford Bay on the majestic Lough Corrib by Stand-up Paddle Board. Take in the views of the Ashford Estate, Lisloughrey Quay, and far-reaching landscapes, and spot aquatic life. Stand-up Paddle Boarding, or SUP, originated in Hawaii as an offshoot of surfing and is ideal in calm light wind conditions. With its sheltered inlets, Ashford Bay and Lough Corrib provide a unique environment to explore and enjoy this magnificent area.

There are two newly resurfaced all-weather courts for complimentary play.   

There is a 9-hole, 2,996 yards par-35 parkland course on the property that is perfect for those of you who can’t go a day in Ireland without picking up the clubs. The course was designed by the renowned Irish golf architect Eddie Hackett and integrated a wide variety of natural features and hazards to create challenging par 3s, exciting par 4s, and a formidable par 5.

1228 The castle was built in 1228 by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family following their defeat of the O'Connors, the Royal House of Connacht, who are still extant in the person of the O’Connor Donn. The de Burgos built several such castles throughout the province, including one on the mouth of the River Corrib around which was to grow to be the City of Galway, but Ashford would remain their principal stronghold in the vastness of a wild and untamed province. The principal legacy of the native O'Connors is to be seen at the gates of the estate in the form of the magnificent Romanesque Augustinian Abbey of Cong , built on the site of a 6th century monastery. It is in this abbey that Ireland's last High King Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair died and from which came the greatest relic of his Court, the Cross of Cong, created to hold a piece of the True Cross (Crucifixion of Christ) and now in the National Museum of Ireland.

1598 After more than three and a half centuries under the de Burgos, whose surname became Burke or Bourke, Ashford passed into the hands of a new master, following a fierce battle between the Lord Binghamforces of the de Burgo's and those of the English official Sir Richard Bingham, Lord President (Governor) of Connaught, when a truce was agreed. In 1589, the castle fell to Bingham, who added a fortified enclave within its precincts. 

1715 The estate of Ashford was established by the Browne Family (Baron Oranmore), and a lodge in the style of a fabulous 17th-century French chateau was added to the medieval architectural splendour of the castle.

1852 The Estate was purchased by Sir Benjamin Guinness, who extended the estate to 26,000 acres, built new roads, planted thousands of trees and added two large Victorian style extensions. The castle was drawn for Sir William Wilde's (Father of Oscar Wilde) book about Galway.

1868 On his death in 1868, the estate passed to his son Lord Ardilaun, an avid gardener who oversaw the development of massive woodlands and rebuilt the entire west wing of the castle. He also subsidised the operation of several steamboats, the most notable of which was the Lady Eglinton, which plied between the villages of the Upper Lough Corrib region and Galway City, thus opening the area to increased commerce. In a time of agitation by tenant farmers in the Land Wars of the late 19th century, Lord Ardilaunepitomised by the action of tenants at nearby Lough Mask House (home of Captain Charles Boycott), he was considered by many to be an 'improving' landlord. Some of his efforts were unsuccessful, particularly the Cong Canal also known as the "Dry Canal", which was built to link Lough Mask and Lough Corrib but was a failure, due to its inability to hold water. Despite such setbacks, the love borne by him and his wife Olive, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Bantry, for the castle and the estate was deep and best epitomised by that fact that when he was ennobled in 1880 he derived his title from the island of Ardilaun, which formed part of the estate on Lough Corrib.

1915 Ashford is retained by the Iveagh Trust on behalf of the Guinness family until it is bought by Noel Huggard in 1939.

1939 The Castle passed to Ardilaun's nephew Ernest Guinness, who sold it to Noel Huggard in 1939. He opened the estate as a hotel, which became renowned for the provision of its country pursuits, such as angling and shooting.

1951 The film director John Ford came to the West of Ireland to film what would become a movie classic, “ The Quiet Man “ starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. The grounds of Ashford Castle as well as nearby Cong formed the backdrop for much of the action in the film. Many of the film’s stars stayed at Ashford.

1970 Ashford Castle was bought by John Mulcahy, who oversaw its complete restoration and expansion, doubling its size with the addition of a new wing in the early 1970s, building a golf course and developing the grounds and gardens. In 1985, a group of Irish American investors, which included Chuck Feeney, purchased Ashford.

1985 A group of Irish American investors purchased Ashford. In the intervening period, Ashford has been voted not only one of the best hotels in Ireland by the most discerning guidebooks, but also one of the top 50 resort properties in Europe.

2008 Ashford Castle was bought outright by Galway Entrepreneur and Hotelier Mr Gerry Barrett.  The Hotel is now owned by The Red Carnation Group

In its time the castle has played host to many notable guests, including HM King George V of the United Kingdom, his consort Queen Mary, Oscar Wilde (whose father, Sir William Wilde, had an estate adjacent to Ashford, where the writer spent much of his childhood) Some of the many guests of note who stayed at the Castle include former U.S. President Ronald Reagan, HRH Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, U.S. Senator Edward Kennedy, John Wayne, Brad Pitt, Pierce Brosnan, HSH Prince Rainier III of Monaco and his consort HSH Princess Grace. When the then future King of England stayed at Ashford he was so enamoured with all that Ashford had to offer he extended his original stay of a few days to 3 months.

The weather in Ireland is heavily influenced by its maritime location, resulting in mild, temperate conditions. The climate is characterized by frequent rainfall and changeable weather patterns throughout the year. Winters are generally mild, with average temperatures ranging from 4°C to 8°C (39°F to 46°F), while summer temperatures average between 14°C to 20°C (57°F to 68°F) in coastal areas. Rainfall is frequent throughout the year, with the western and northwestern coastal regions experiencing higher precipitation levels. The weather is often changeable, with a mix of sunny spells, rain showers, and cloud cover. The Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf Stream influence Ireland's climate, helping to moderate temperatures.

On-Tour Luggage & Carry-On Bag Size Limits

Luggage : Each guest traveling may bring one suitcase no larger than 30” x 18” x 10" and weighing no more than 50 lb

Carry-On Bag : *Restricted to one piece per person, not to exceed 12” x 11” x 6”

• *Please note : A "carry-on bag" on a tour coach is not the same as a "carry-on" for a flight. Because our coaches have large windows to enjoy the view, there is minimal space to store large items securely overhead or under the seats. A "carry-on bag" may be a soft-sided daypack, purse, backpack, tote bag, or the like. Because we value our guests' safety, small rolling suitcases or bags with telescopic handles are not permitted. In order to guarantee a smooth trip, guests are not permitted to store an additional "carry-on" bag beneath the coach with the luggage. 

So your driver and any hotel porters can safely lift and transport your suitcase throughout your vacation, we strongly recommend that you test the weight of your baggage prior to travel. You should be able to lift and comfortably transport it for short distances. 

Baggage allowances vary from airline to airline, and you should check with your chosen carrier for details prior to travel.

Packing Tips for Your Tour

Packing for a guided tour will vary depending on the duration of the trip, the time of year, and the activities planned. Here is a general packing list to help you get started:

Passport and Travel Documents : Ensure you have your passport , travel insurance , and any necessary travel documents.

• Comfortable walking shoes: Cobblestone streets and uneven terrain require comfortable footwear.
• Lightweight, breathable clothing: Pack clothes suitable for the season. Bring a mix of short-sleeved tops, lightweight pants or skirts, and a few long-sleeved options for cooler evenings for the summer months, and long-sleeved and heavier layers for early Spring, Fall, and Winter.
• Layers: It's advisable to bring a light jacket or sweater and a scarf for layering, especially in Spring or Fall.
• Nice evening wear: You may wish to wear a dressier outfit if you plan on dining in an elegant restaurant, for example. Smart-casual clothes are usually acceptable for all included daytime and evening activities throughout your tour.
• Rain Gear: Depending on the season and the countries you're visiting, it's a good idea to pack a compact rain jacket or umbrella.

Sun Protection:

• Hat, sunglasses, UV-protective clothing.
• Sunscreen with high SPF. If you're visiting any coastal areas, bring reef-safe sunscreen formulated without harmful chemicals known to be damaging to coral reefs and marine life. Traditional sunscreens often contain ingredients like oxybenzone and octinoxate, which have been found to contribute to coral bleaching and negatively impact marine ecosystems. Look for sunscreens with certifications such as "Reef Safe," "Coral Safe," or "Ocean-Friendly" to ensure they are environmentally friendly .

Medications and First Aid:

• Basic first aid kit with adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, etc.

Toiletries:

• Travel-sized toiletries, including shampoo, conditioner, soap, and toothpaste.
• Travel towel (quick-drying and compact).
• Hand sanitizer and wet wipes.
• A washcloth and carry bag (often not available in hotels abroad).

Electronics:

• A camera: You’re traveling to see extraordinary scenery and sites. So that you don't miss a single moment, bring a trustworthy camera. Remember to pack light and versatile items that can be mixed and matched for different outfits. Laundry facilities are often available, or you can have your clothes laundered at hotels during your trip. It's also a good idea to pack a small bag or backpack to bring on the coach for day trips and excursions, leaving your larger luggage at the hotel.

Electricity

• American appliances run on 110-120 volts at 60 Hz, while the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland run on 220-230 volts at 50 Hz.
• Type G outlets are used throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland. Adapters are used to change the plug style from American-style plugs with two flat prongs to fit into these outlets, which take three rectangular prongs.
• You will need a plug adapter and voltage converter to use your appliances in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
• We recommend purchasing an adapter with a voltage converter so you can pack less. Also, pick up any necessary adapters or converters for your electronic devices before departing on your guided tour and bringing them.

Hair Dryers in Your Hotel

Hair dryers are standard accessories in hotels. Should you want to bring your own, though, you will need to bring an adapter and voltage converter or make sure it is dual voltage by checking the label for INPUT AC 120V - 240V or a switch that can be set to 125V or 250V. Many devices have this feature, so it's worth checking before you travel. If you need a hair dryer during your trip but can't find one in your hotel room, you can inquire with the hotel staff. Many hotels will be able to provide a hair dryer upon request, either at the front desk or through housekeeping.

Air Conditioning

• Air conditioning is commonly available in European and United Kingdom hotels, restaurants, and public spaces, especially in major cities and tourist areas, but it is worth noting that the settings will differ from what you are used to in the USA.
• However, it's important to note that not all accommodations or historic buildings may have air conditioning, particularly in more traditional or rural settings.
• Most hotels in Europe or the UK can provide a portable fan for additional room cooling if requested. Your Travel Director will be on hand to assist you throughout your trip.

Traveling by coach

Our modern air-conditioned coaches have been selected with your comfort in mind. Your Travel Director will familiarize you with all the onboard features, including a washroom fitted for your convenience and comfort. Regular stops are made to stretch your legs, take refreshments, fill up your water bottles, and use the facilities.

Airport transfers

Airport Transfers for Europe flights not arriving to or departing from London Airport transfers to and from the airport on the first and last days of your tour are complimentary only if:

In order to ensure a healthy and enjoyable trip, we strongly suggest that you pack a plentiful supply of any medication you may need while on vacation. Here’s what you need to know about traveling with medications .

Prior to traveling, please notify GET of any disability requiring special assistance or any specific dietary needs that you may have, and we will strive to accommodate these.

Hotel services

It is customary to tip hotel staff for room service delivery if the charge has not already been added to the bill. Where ice machines are not available, and you receive ice from the bar, a small tip to the bartender is always appreciated.

Day 1 | Hello Dublin

The ‘Emerald Isle’ puts its best foot forward in this iconic exploration of its soul-stirring landscapes. We kick off our epic journey along the walled gardens and rambling walks of Powerscourt Gardens. Day 2 | Discover Diverse Dublin

Lyrics and legends await this morning as we join a Local Specialist on a city tour to visit St. Patrick’s Cathedral, where Jonathan Swift was once installed as Dean. We admire the colourful doorways in the stately Georgian Squares and stroll along the cobbled courtyard of Trinity College and see the Book of Kells. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure to soak up the charisma of this city. Day 3 | Admire County Kilkenny and on to Cork

We leave the hospitality of Dublin behind for County Kilkenny where we delve into the history of a ‘lost’ medieval town – Newtown Jerpoint. Take a step back in time to the 12th century and wander through its remains which are said to be the final resting place of St. Nicholas. Later, you’ll join the O’Connells for lunch at their home, Belmore House. Embrace the peaceful rural setting – the perfect backdrop to Connect With Locals at a Be My Guest experience. Inspired by Irish food and the warmth of our hosts, we continue south to the lively city of Cork, enjoying a free evening to discover its sights, sounds and flavours. Our Stays With Stories accommodation is the historic Maldron Shandon Hotel. A rugged realm of mountains, lakes, rivers and villages provides a stunning backdrop for our leisurely drive through Connemara – an unspoilt region of western Ireland that was immortalised in John Wayne’s ‘The Quiet Man’. We’ll visit Kylemore Abbey and ramble through its exquisite Victorian walled garden. Later, board ‘The Isle of Innisfree’ for an exclusive cruise on shimmering Lough Corrib. Captain Patrick, Ashford Castle’s Local Specialist, will share his local knowledge as you glide through its peaceful waters. Upon disembarking, a lone piper will escort you over the drawbridge to Ashford Castle, one of Trafalgar’s Stays With Stories, where tonight you will dine as lords and ladies at an elegant royal dining experience (gentlemen are requested to wear a jacket).

The Assumption Belfry and Ivan the Great Bell Tower

View from a corner of Assumption Cathedral on the architectural ensemble of the Assumption Belfry (at the left) and Ivan the Great Bell Tower (at the right) built in the Moscow Kremlin in 16th century. The tower’s name implies that it had once housed St. John’s Church, and that it used to be the tallest building in Moscow (height with cross is about 80 m). For many decades the bell tower was also the main watchtower in the Kremlin, and later also a fire tower. Petrok Maliy, the Italian architect who built the Kitai-Gorod wall in Moscow, started the construction of the church of the Resurrection, later renamed Church of the Nativity, next to the Ivan the Great Tower in 1532. Decades later was converted to a four-tier belfry for large bells, known today as the Assumption Belfry after its main 64-ton bell placed in the middle of the fourth tier. The Assumption bell tolled only on great holidays and to announce events of exceptional significance.
