Is it hard to get a Sim Card in India ? You may have heard, or you may read online that getting a sim card in India for tourists is hard. This used to be the case and although it’s still not as easy as getting a sim card in other countries, things are changing and how to get a sim card in India and how to buy a sim card in India is now pretty easy.

So in this India travel blog, let me help you work out which prepaid India sim card is best for you, what the best sim card in India for tourists is, and how to get a sim card in India in 3 easy ways!

Quickly though, let’s cover the question – Do I need to get a sim card in India?  My answer – YES!

Best Sim Card in India

Airtel and Vodafone are India’s biggest network providers however because of how big India is the coverage is not the same all over the country.

A few years ago when I was last in India, I found that Vodafone and Airtel work well in North India but Airtel worked better for me in South India than my Vodafone India sim card did.

Jio is another popular network provider that I have not tried.

Do I need an unlocked phone to visit India?

To get a local sim card (in all countries), you must have an unlocked phone!

If your phone is not unlocked you will not be able to get a sim card in India. Instead, your best choice for internet in India is hiring a wireless device so you can still be connected in India! A lot of Americans have locked phones and you cannot buy an Indian sim card in the USA so you will need to hire a wifi device.

SIM CARD FOR INDIA

I really recommend having a sim card in India as it makes travel in India so much easier! You may have heard that it’s hard to get a sim card in India but you can get a sim card in Delhi Airport, read this post to see how to buy a sim card in Delhi Airport or if you fly in elsewhere 3 ways to buy a sim card in India and you’ll be connected in just a few hours!

WHAT TO WEAR IN INDIA

If you are a woman, here’s what I recommend you pack and wear in India . Technically you can wear what you like in India in most places but to get fewer stares and feel more comfortable, read my post!

DON’T GET SCAMMED IN DELHI

Most people arrive for the first time into Delhi and get scammed within a few hours! Read my Delhi Travel Tips to help you enjoy Delhi, and the best places to stay in Delhi which is so important!

How To Get A Sim Card in India?

1. getting a sim card in india at the airport.

You can buy a sim card at Delhi Airport which I have done many times, and I have been told recently you can also buy a SIM card at Mumbai Airport .

Getting a SIM card at the airport is always the best idea because the shops are as you leave arrivals , the process is quick and easy and you’ll be connected with plenty of data with 2-3 hours of arriving in India.

Here’s my full blog post on how to get a sim card in Delhi airport with prices and packages.

Based on my past visits, the only Indian sim card provider at the airport is Airtel but the coverage and package they offer is pretty much the best sim card in India for tourists to get so that’s all you need.

If you’re flying into Delhi, I 100% recommend buying your sim card in India at Delhi Airport  as it is the easiest way to get a sim card in India, you don’t need to bring copies of your passport and photos to them as you have to do in the options below, they do it all for you.

But make sure you read my post on getting a SIM card in Delhi here because the men often scam tourists with the price so make sure you don’t get caught out!

At the moment I only know of Delhi Airport and Mumbai Airport as Airports in India to get a sim card in.

But if you arrive at Amritsar, Bangalore, Goa or any other main international airports, look for an Airtel store when you leave arrivals as there may be one!

And let me know in the comments section of this post if you see one!

2. Getting a Sim Card in India at your Hotel or Hostel

Another good option and the second-best way to get an India prepaid sim is to ask your accommodation to help you.

This works best if you are staying in a hostel in India as they are set up for travellers arriving and wanting a sim card.

For example,  Backpacker Panda in Mumbai, Colaba  offers this service which I used when I first arrived in India. Moustache Hostel New Delhi  also offers this service. (I recommend both of these hostels as great places to stay in India by the way!)

Getting an India sim card for tourists this way will cost you a bit extra as they have to add on a commission for the hostel and you literally have someone from Vodafone Sim Card India or Airtel visit the hostel to complete the paperwork with you.

You will need photocopies of your passport and India visa, along with a passport photo to give to the sim card guy but the hostel can help you with these.

BOOKING TRAINS IN INDIA

India is best travelled by train because its the quickest, cheapest and best way of getting to know the country. For an EASY option of booking trains in India use 12GO to search and book trains really easily. If you’ll be in India for awhile, you can use the local booking system, it’s a bit tricker but possible, here’s my post on how to book trains in India as a tourist .

BEST ACCOMMODATION IN INDIA

I always use Booking.com to book my hotels in India and Hostelworld to book my hostels . India has a great range of accommodation with brilliant hostel chains like Moustache, Zostel and Backpacker Panda as well as homestays to luxury hotels.

GUIDED TOURS IN INDIA

Many cities in India are best seen with a guide , even if it’s just a half day tour on your first day . Cities in India are chaotic and complex and what better way to taste the food and get to know the city than with a local. I recommend Get Your Guide & Viator for the best tours in India!

3. Getting a Sim Card in India from a Store

Vodafone and Airtel are India’s largest network provider but I would avoid going into an actual Vodafone store or Airtel store which is how I initially assumed you would get a sim card.

This is because you’ll likely be asked for more information like an Indian number and Indian address to register your sim.. which you do not have!

Instead, if you can’t get a sim card at the Airport, or through your accommodation, go to a small shop in a local market for example which seems to dabble in everything phone-related and lookout for signs that say they sell sim cards .

This is what I did in Kochi in South India and it was so easy. If you have trouble finding one be sure to ask your accommodation for help.

I asked for a sim, he gave me a card of the options. He copied my passport, I gave a passport photo, I filled in the contract, handed over the money (which was a much better price than my first time), put my sim in 1 day later, called the number he gave me to verify it was me using my passport number, and I had internet!

However, this is still a more difficult option than the ones above as these stores are used to Indian people buying sim cards rather than foreign tourists  looking for a mobile sim card in India.

Prices of Prepaid Sim Cards in India

When it comes to the cost of sim cards in India, there are different international sim card packages in India.

Generally, you can get packages for  28 days, 60 days, 82 days and 90 days .

You may be offered a certain one, you may just be given what you’re given (which you’ll get used to in India!). If you are staying in India for a few months as I did for 4 months , make sure you get a 90-day sim card in India!

What I love about the data sim cards in India is that the data is PER DAY! For example, when I last got Delhi Airport sim card package, the deal was:

  • 900Rs / £10.00 / $12.50
  • 1.4gb of data each day which refreshes each day.
  • Unlimited calls to Indian numbers.
  • Validity for 82 days.

*Note this price and package might have changed as this was pre-pandemic.

There is talk about there being a Delhi Airport free sim card but I didn’t see this in Delhi Airport and wasn’t offered it at any point so I wouldn’t rely on this, to be honest.

Remember to read here how to get a Sim Card in Delhi Airport .

Hi, thank you for this psot. However, do you know if I can get a SIM card at the Delhi airport transit area? As I have a 7 hour transit to the next connecting flight out to another remote city. Also, do we need to bring the copies and photo you mentioned or will they do it?

TheWanderingQuinn

Hello, no, I don't believe you can get a SIM card without leaving the airport completely into arrivals unfortunately. They will make the copies.

Saturday 9th of September 2023

Hi, I can confirm the shop at Delhi Airport. [September 2023] They take cash only. You may pay in Dollars or Euro, too. The plan by now is 1.5Gb per day, inside India phone flat for ~6 Dollars (28 days). Passport is copied, photo taken. They assist very kindly with the form. Even with cue still worth it. Faster with groups of travelers.

@Fab, thankyou I'm worrying about this as I am on my own , although with a group i know no one. I will just be hoping no big que.

Thank you for the update

Monday 3rd of April 2023

Bangalore this week, there was a shop selling SIM cards at arrivals but when we asked him he said, "system down,," and I still don't have one. Grateful for your post!

Thanks for letting me know!

Second time I have done this.

In late March 2023, travelled from Australia landed at New Delhi airport went to the Airtel counter and asked for a tourist sim card. Was told 450rupees for 1mth (28 days?) and 1.2 GB download per day (the app says 1.5GB per day). They took a photocopy of my passport and they took a photo of me as well.

You will be advised to call a phone number after a couple of hours and you be provided with the details you need.

This process took about 5mins.

At the hotel room put in the sim card, called the number and followed the prompts to set up. Took less then a couple of minutes to do that.

@Nick, thank you!!!! Will be arriving in Delhi on Thursday.

@Nick, hi I'm due to go to Delhi in 3 weeks time . Single women . I'm really struggling with the phone SIM card dilemma. I'm with a tour from the UK so the airport will be busy with the Heathrow flight all probably wanting Sims . With having a guide meeting us I'm just wondering if they do all that for you . I have ordered a lebera SIM which I can activate in India I'm hoping that may be an alternative. Have you any experience with lebera .? Thankyou

Monday 20th of March 2023

I just went to an Airtel office in Mumbai and got a SIM card with my passport and a copy of my visa. They took a digital picture, so there is no need to have one. The big hang-up was they needed to be able to send a one-time text to someone who already has an Indian number and get the code back to complete the process.

Great to know! Thank you.

How to Activate Your SIM Card

How to top up your indian sim card.

If you are traveling to India soon and need to stay connected to friends, family, and fellow travelers while you are out and about then you will need an Indian SIM Card. Getting a local SIM card when traveling grants you access to important services in the country such as shopping, ordering taxis, food delivery, maps, and mobile data.

There are four main phone service providers in India. Among the four, Vodafone-Idea and Airtel are the two biggest providers. SIM cards can be bought in the airport or outside the airport by providing your passport, visa, and passport photo.

  • Airtel is the leading carrier in India. Travelers can select a plan that gives 3GB of LTE data and unlimited calls within the country for as low as 300 rupees (US$ 6), with a validity of 28 days.
  • In most western countries, mobile phones are locked to the frequency of a single mobile service provider. It is useful to have a dual SIM phone or have your phone unlocked by your provider.
  • Buying SIM cards at the airport is the most convenient way to get one. You can typically find kiosks selling SIM cards in the arrival hall which are located almost immediately after you clear customs.
  • You will need to show your passport, visa, and passport photo to get a SIM card.
  • Indian SIM cards need to be activated by the provider on their network. This can take anywhere from a few hours up to 48 hours.

You can choose between two types of SIM cards. One is the postpaid SIM Card where you pay for the services like calling and data after you have used them, usually at the end of the month. Another is the prepaid SIM card where you should pay first before using the services.

Postpaid SIM Card

A postpaid SIM card is one where the services like calling, data, and texting are paid after they are used. They cost more than prepaid plans and the bill is sent at the end of a month-long cycle. This type of SIM is not available for foreign travelers.

Prepaid SIM Card

A prepaid SIM Card is one where services like calling, data, and texting are paid in advance. Using this type of SIM Card is comparatively cheaper. However, there are some disadvantages such as need constant topping up and getting unwanted text messages.

Also, for Indians, the activation of the SIM card is almost immediate and is done through their ID number called Aadhar. For foreigners, the activation can take a long time. In some cases, it may even take up to 2 or 3 days.

Which Company is the Best and Why?

There are four main service providers in India. They all offer 4G/LTE, but not all have good coverage across the entire country. The top two providers for network coverage are Vodafone-Idea and Airtel and most travelers should opt for one or the other.

Airtel is the leading carrier in the country, with over 300 million users. Travelers can select a plan that gives 3GB of LTE data and unlimited calls within the country for as low as 300 rupees (US $6). This is valid for 28 days from the time of purchase.

Other carriers have fairly strict requirements such as requiring foreigners needing to submit details of a local reference as well as their residence details within the country. Vodafone-Idea does not offer nationwide LTE coverage. If you use their service, there will be times when the connection will switch to 2G when traveling between states.

In most western countries, mobile phones are locked to the frequency of a single mobile service provider. You will not be able to insert another SIM or use it with another carrier unless you first get your phone unlocked by your provider.

Even if unlocked, your phone may still not work properly unless the GSM bandwidth of your phone is compatible. You will need a dual, tri-band, or quad-band phone that works on 900 MHz to 2500 MHz. Check first to see if your phone is compatible before buying a foreign SIM.

It is also useful to have a phone with dual SIM slots. This way, all you have to do is insert the new prepaid Indian SIM into the additional slot. Most service providers in India now offer micro-SIM cards.

Where can I get an Indian SIM Card?

Buying a SIM card in India is quite an experience. Depending on where you buy it and the person selling it to you, the process may be relatively quick and painless or long and difficult. The best place to buy your SIM is in the arrivals hall of the airport although this is more expensive than buying a card outside.

Buying an Indian SIM Card at the Airport

If travelers are flying into an international airport, SIM Cards are available at kiosks in the arrival hall which are located almost immediately after you clear customs. Remember that you will need to provide your passport, visa, and passport photo to get a SIM Card.

The downside of this method is that it is more expensive than the SIMs you can get in the city. In the end, travelers will have to choose between cost and convenience.

Buying an Indian SIM Outside the Airport

Alternatively, SIM cards can also be bought from the stores or cell phone vendors in downtown areas and shopping malls. The procedure for activating the SIM is similar with both options. The benefits of buying a SIM card outside the airport are lower prices and more choices.

How Much Does an Indian SIM Card Cost?

When buying a SIM Card at the airport, Airtel typically charges 900 rupees (US$ 13). This price bundle includes 1.5 GB of data and 100 domestic texts per day, plus unlimited domestic calls which are valid for four weeks.

Buying the same bundle elsewhere will cost around 250 rupees. There is also an extra charge for the SIM Card, costing between 50 to 100 rupees. Internet packages are not subject to roaming charges in India. Incoming calls or outgoing calls within the same network do not include extra charges.

If you plan to make a lot of calls, consider purchasing a SIM card in the state where you intend to spend most of your time. Alternatively, there are some packages that include free calls throughout the whole of India.

The Indian SIM Card needs to be activated by the provider on their network. This can take anywhere from a few hours to 48 hours.

To complete the activation process, the owner of the SIM Card needs to call a number and answer several questions including date of birth and the last four last digits of your passport number. Different providers will have different numbers to call. For Airtel, it is 59059.

This process usually requires the phone to be turned on and off several times. This will all be explained at the time of purchase by the vendor.

If you run out of credit on your phone, you might continue to receive incoming calls, but will not be able to make calls or send messages. Topping up the SIM can be done from a kiosk of the service provider at any location in India.

It is always a good idea to check your balance after you buy the top-up and while still at the vendor. Each provider has a code for checking your balance. With Airtel, dialing *123*11# will give you a message showing your remaining data, call, and SMS credit.

Local SIM cards for international passengers now at Bengaluru Airport

BENGALURU: Two major passenger-friendly amenities have been launched at the Kempegowda International Airport — availability of local SIM cards at the arrivals zone for international passengers and baby stroller service to cater to infants.

According to an official release, the SIM card concept has been introduced ‘to attend to the pressing need of international passengers to get a SIM card immediately upon arrival while also providing domestic passengers multiple SIM card options with prompt activation.’ The cards will be activated within 30 minutes of issuance.

The SIM cards will be provided free of cost but charges need to be paid when topping it up. CXSOL (CX solutions) will issue SIM cards of various service providers including Vodafone, Jio and Airtel, the release said. Apart from SIM cards, the firm will offer wi-fi dongles and other accessories.

In a statement, Javed Malik, Chief Operating Officer, BIAL, said “Bengaluru is the IT capital of India and it is our responsibility to offer our guests technology services. The mobile connectivity outlet is an addition to several premium services we already offer at KIA that can enhance passenger experience.”

Baby strollers A baby stroller service has also been launched inside the terminal. Managed by First Cry, an online portal for baby products, trained staff will issue strollers through a simple, digitised process, the release said.

I have been reading about the free pre-activated tourist sim card that BSNL offers at some airports and noticed that Bengalaru Airport was one such airport.

1. Can anyone confirm that they have seen these at Bangalore airport recently?

2. If so, whereabouts is it located as you enter arrivals?

If this doesn't work, I'll have to get apply for a local sim card which I've heard is a lot of hassle!

bangalore tourist sim card

Yes it is a hassle to get a local SIM card from a wireless carrier office in the city.

I too would like to hear an update, has anybody actually gotten a SIM card at BLR airport upon arrival?

' class=

The BSNL pre-activated sim card is available at the Bangalore airport. The information center is right at the arrival hall after the international baggage claim. They would be able to assist you with the location of the BSNL kiosk.

Documents needed to get Free tourist sim in India

Copy of E-visa (Indian e-visa facility is available to 161 countries, as on Feb 2017)

First page of the passport

Features of the Free tourist sim

Pre-activated (Insert in your mobile and start using instantly)

Validity – 30 days

50 MB Internet data – preloaded

50 Rupees talk time – preloaded

Can call Toll-free Tourist Helpline number 1800111363 (Short Code: 1363), available 24×7 in 12 foreign languages (This number can also be accessed by private mobile networks)

So given this info, and what I’ve seen elsewhere, this is only available to e-visa arrivals. Long-term visas (such as multiple-entry business visas attached to one’s passport) may not (do not?) qualify for this program?

' class=

If not in airport, you can still get in normal shops which sells simcards. Better visit telecom company retail offices than reseller shops so that you would get the sim activated quickly. You would need photo, passport, visa copies, local address proof or letter (hotel or wherever), and sometimes a local reference number. Let me warn that though operators promise sim cards to be activated in hours, it may really take a day or 2.

Another easier way is to arrange sim card with travel agencies, which avoids all pains to get a sim. Just pay the price for it and get a sim card once you arrive.

Then there is a website called trabug. They provide phone+sim on rental basis. Simcard will be activated once you arrive in India. Documentation submission can happen even before you arrive in India.

I've been through the annoyance of copies of passport, photos, etc. on previous trips, it's really quite the hassle and sometimes barely worth it for a short trip...and also it's not ready soon enough for talking to driver/etc. upon arrival at the airport. Oh well, I was hoping for something easier next time.

I see so many listings in map searches I can't tell the difference between a reseller and a direct telecom office. Last time I was there, the local Airtel office I visited said the forms would take a couple of days to get picked up and sent to the main office for processing.

Any suggestions on how to find the telecom company central offices (that would minimize such delays) in central Bangalore? Maybe you can post the specific addresses for the major companies?

' class=

As above, would be really interested to hear from anyone that has used Trabug in the last 6 months.

Might be the easiest way out, as long as it is

- reliable?

- hassle-free?

- flexible?

- cost-effective?

bangalore tourist sim card

Any updates on SIM card availability for non Indian citizens? I understand now they need a Aadhar card number for SIM cards. I am keen to get a Jio SIM for my two week business trip to India that takes me to Bangalore and north India. If anyone has had recent experience of obtaining a SIM card at the airport please let me know. I have found it most easy to get SIM cards in China. Without a local phone it is very difficult to contact taxi drivers.

' class=

I just landed here in Bangalore and thee is not a way to get the SIM card in airport. I live in Detroit visiting some relatives. We come here once a year and always borrow a relatives sim cad. This time I am going to try and get my own sim. I’ll keep you updated.

bangalore tourist sim card

Go to the website : ' https://www.airtel.in/store/ ' select bangalore and 'airtel store'

You will get the address for the all the airtel offical stores in bangalore.

Documents required are :

1. 2 photographs

2. Passport copy

3. E-visa or visa copy.

The SIM is mostly free or is present at nominal rate and sim will start operating in 5 mins after purchase.

Same can be done for Vodafone also.

And for BSNL, you place where the sim should be available is Help/information centre at the airport. (i have not tried it but this the floated information from the government)

How To Get A Local SIM Card In India As A Foreigner

How To Get A Local SIM Card In India As A Foreigner In 2024

Spread the Word!

Traveling is meant to be relaxing and an escape from the rigors of daily life. However, it is important to stay connected to your family and friends while traveling. The Internet makes communication easier. To use the internet, you need an activated local SIM card. Purchasing a SIM card in India is hassle-free and doesn’t take up much of your time.

Here’s an extensive walkthrough of all the information you need to know about staying on-grid while touring India as a foreigner.

Buying An Indian SIM Card

Table of Contents

What Is A SIM Card?

If you are looking to purchase a SIM card, you probably know what it is. Either way, let’s cover the basics.

sim card in India

SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. It is typically a small card that has a protected microchip to uniquely identify the user. Mobile devices have SIM slots of varying sizes based on the model. To accommodate this, SIM cards also come in varying sizes namely standard, micro, and nano. Once the SIM card is registered with the network provider, they link the SIM card and phone number provided to you.

In India, a typical cellular number has the code +91 followed by 10 digits. To utilize the benefits like making/receiving calls, sending SMS/text messages, or using mobile data, you need to pay the network provider.

If You’re A Foreigner Based/Traveling From The USA

If your phone doesn’t have a SIM card slot, then you need to unlock the phone before leaving your home country. Just approach your local retailer to enable a SIM card slot accessible for you. Another alternative is to either buy a pocket router or a new mobile phone with a sim card slot. Recently, eSIM was introduced which is great for frequent flyers.

Digital SIM or eSIM

eSIM is an embedded SIM that allows users to use the prepaid or postpaid service without using the physical SIM Cards. Airtel, Jio, and VI offer the service for compatible smartphones or devices. Currently, Apple, Samsung, Google, and Motorola have rolled out this feature in top-end phones. All new and existing customers can opt for eSIM.

Benefits of Purchasing An Indian SIM Card

  • The rates are cheap in India when compared to the hefty roaming charges
  • Despite the large area, India has a vast network coverage
  • You can also choose daily data usage plans which include free calls and SMS all across the nation

Reliable Service Providers In India

Different service providers in India

Among the four major network providers, Jio, Airtel, BSNL, and VI (Vodafone-Idea), Jio and Airtel are mostly preferred and have the most subscribers. They provide seamless 4G and 5G internet connectivity at better speed with wide network coverage and also value for money.

Documents Required

  • Photocopy of your passport
  • Photocopy of Indian Visa
  • One Indian passport-size photo
  • If the passport doesn’t have your address, then you need to provide proof of residence in your country. Eg. Identity card, driver’s license.

At the time of purchase, one photograph will be taken as a part of KYC (Know Your Customer) and you will be asked to fill out a form and sign the same.

Age Limitation

In India, a person should be 18+ years of age to get their sim card. Otherwise, he/she can avail in the name of the guardian.

How Is The Internet Speed In India?

India has a slow bandwidth speed when compared to most of the countries. But it is quite good in the cities. It does vary widely in remote areas. The increase in the number of smartphone users is also a reason for the comparatively slow internet speed in India.

What Are Prepaid And Postpaid Plans?

Prepaid services are “pay before you use” and postpaid services are “use first pay later”. Postpaid services require permanent address proof in India. So, as a foreigner, you are eligible to use prepaid services only. In general, residents prefer a prepaid plan as it is comparatively cheaper and has the added advantage of avoiding monthly credit shocks.

With the prepaid option, you can choose your plan but you need to pay upfront to enjoy the benefits. You can also recharge to get add-ons or even upgrade your plan. Once the plan expires, you will have to do a nominal top-up to avail the benefits.

How Much Does It Cost?

Heavy competition and an aggressive increase in smartphone users made the network providers offer competitive prices to lure customers.

Here is the price comparison for your reference. The prices do change frequently. Visit their official website ( Airtel , Jio , VI , and BSNL ) for recent and updated pricing.

Where To Get A SIM Card?

At the airport.

Most SIM Cards bought at the airport are tourist SIMs and are typically valid for 90 days. After purchasing a SIM Card, stay within the city limits for it to be activated.

As a tourist, the airport is the best place to buy a SIM card in India. But, if face a delay in activation, you cannot go to the airport retail again without a flight ticket (Airport Security Protocol). But you can seek local dedicated retailers’ help to contact the store and get it cleared.

The Airtel shops are located at the T3 arrival area at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi (Airport Code: DEL), and the Level 2 arrival area at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai (Airport Code: BOM). The shops at the airport are open 24/7. If you cannot locate the store, you can enquire at the Information Desk at the airport.

Some international airports don’t have SIM retail outlets. For instance, Chennai International Airport (Airport Code: MAA) doesn’t have one.

At Exclusive Retail Outlets

There are multiple retail outlets spread across the country. You can google “Airtel/ Jio store near me” to find the one closest to you. The SIM Cards offered here are cheaper and you can approach the retail vendors anytime.

If you are a foreigner, you will be asked for a local reference number. You can give the contact number of your friend or the hotel/hostel you plan to stay in.

At Local Vendors

Although many vendors offer SIM Cards, it is advisable to buy only from authentic retail dealers. When purchasing from an unlicensed vendor there is a possibility that the number might be registered under the name of someone else and could stop working anytime. But you can top-up or recharge online or at any local shop across the country.

At Your Hotel/ Hostel

You can get a SIM Card from the hotel/hostel you’re put up without any struggle but they might charge an extra fee for the service.

How To Activate The SIM Card?

Once your details are successfully verified, your SIM Card will be activated within 6 hours after the purchase. Call the number given on the cover of the SIM Card you purchased to activate it. If it takes more than 24 hours to activate, then contact the seller whose in a position to help you.

Validity of The SIM Card

As mentioned earlier, if you are a foreigner, then the validity period is usually 90 days but it could be extended to match your VISA validity upon request. Once the validity period expires, your phone number will be blocked automatically.

If you have longer VISA validity, say 5 years, for instance, you need to recharge once every 90 days to keep the SIM card active. If not, the SIM might lead to deactivation.

Is 5G Available In India?

Airtel and Jio offer 5G services across different cities in India. VI is expected to launch its 5G services in 2023 followed by BSNL.

Roaming In India

India has 29 states, each run by its respective State Government. Each time you cross the state border, you will get a push notification or message and your roaming will be turned on automatically. If not, restarting your device should do the trick. There are no roaming charges within the country. You can enjoy calls and data anywhere in the country.

Helpful Tips

  • You can download the app of your network provider to check your current plan, and data balance, or recharge online.
  • If you want to charge your device, most of the sockets are Type D and Type C plug types. It is advisable to purchase a universal adapter that can be used in 150+ countries including India.
  • When you approach a vendor for recharge or top-up, be specific about your prepaid plan.
  • You can also purchase a pocket router to connect multiple devices.
  • The prepaid services don’t work in Jammu and Kashmir due to security reasons.

While it is easy to navigate the digital world in unfamiliar territory using the internet, you are advised to always check in with a trusted friend or family member. Travel adventurously but also sensibly.

My visa to India will get expired in soon but will get it renewed as applied for. Will Airtel block my sim. Do I need to inform Airtel not to block my sim.

Please advise.

' src=

Hi Shekar, the SIM card validity has nothing to do with visa expiration. To keep the Airtel sim active, just recharge. If a plan is activated, Airtel will not be blocking your SIM.

' src=

Twins I have found out that this is not true. I did exactly that a few days before my 90 day expiration and as instructed by an Airtel rep. As I wanted to make sure my sim wouldn’t expire and I would be without cell service I went to a different Airtel store the day before the 90 day expiration. That store sent me to another store, which then sent me to another store, which then sent me back to the previous store. At last the manager seemed to understand problem, assured me he would take care of it, not to worry, gave me his phone number which he said worked on what’s app ..no! So on my 91 day my sim card no longer worked. I emailed the complaints department and 4 responses later, they say I have to go to an Emassy and get some kind of letter from them on Emassy letterhead and provide copies of my passport, visa, etc. just like I did to get the sim card in the first place. I gave up. . google maps still work and I can use hotel internet to contact people through what’s app and I leave India in 7 days….my experience

@Lynn, we’re so sorry to hear this. We really appreciate your efforts in writing back to us. This will help our readers as well. We will make a note of this issue. Thanks again Lynn.

Hi , I am Travelling from New Zealand to Abu dhabi and than Mumbai so I am having 8 hours layover at Abu dhabi Airport , Can i get a Airtel Prepaid Sim card from transit lounge in Abu dhabi Airport. Please advise where is this counter located to get Airtel Sim card for Mumbai. Thanks.

Sanjay, you can get Indian SIM cards only after landing in India. However, you can use international roaming services from your existing SIM card. At Mumbai, the Airtel store is located at Level 2 arrival area which is open 24*7. If you are not able to locate, please contact information desk at the airport.

Hi, Airtel stopped selling sims at Delhi airport during Covid times, Have they restarted selling sims at T3 International Airport Delhi Arrivals? Doe anyone have any recent update?

Hello James, yes the Airtel kiosk at the Delhi airport is operating now. You can buy one from the counter directly.

' src=

After purchaing E-Sim card, how much time take to activate the E sim-card? Is any counter nearby IGA airport?

@Deepak, the e-sim cards are activated immediately. However, for the calling and messaging services to be active, it’ll take around 2-3 hours minimum. Also, as mentioned in the blog, counters are available at the T3 – international arrival terminal at the Indira Gandhi Airport, Delhi.

' src=

Indian and Nepali citizens don’t need passport and visa to travel. Airtel and Reliance companies aren’t providing sims unless we show visa. How can we get sim card in such condition?

You have to provide Nepali Citizenship Certificate or the passport in order to buy a SIM card. Our dear friends from Nepal have bought SIM cards without any issues. If they demand VISA, you’ll have to explain to them or try a different store. Reach out to customer care if required.

' src=

Does that mean that it would also take some time until Internet is activated?

I will need it to order Uber and similar services. Is WiFi widely available within the airport premisses?

Yes exactly. It will take some time for the internet services to be active. For an immediate internet connection, you can use the free WIFI available at the airport, which can be activated upon submitting the OTP from your mobile number (not necessarily an Indian SIM). Also, please note that only popular airports have Free WIFI facilities.

' src=

Requiring OTP for wifi access makes no sense. International Travelers without roaming plan has no working phone # to receive OTP. What is the workaround to get internet access?

As far as the mobile number is active with a valid plan, roaming is not required to receive OTP. Unfortunately, this is the only possible way to get access to the airport WiFi in India as of now.

' src=

Great post! I travel to India once in one to two years. How can I keep the same number active when I’m outside india? How does one top up a prepaid plan?

That’s good to hear. You can keep the same number active in two ways – by asking your friends to recharge or you doing it from the website. As far as the plan is concerned, topping up for a monthly pack with data (at least 1 GB/ month) has worked for us. We hope this helps!

Hi, I will arrive in Mumbai on 20th December around 7.10pm. I need to get a SIM for the 2 weeks I am there. Which is the most suitable SIM for me. I need data more than anything else. Will hotels sell SIMs. I will be staying at the Trident Nariman Point.

Hello Rit, Welcome to India. You can opt for either Airtel or JIO SIM card providers. Indian hotels do not sell SIM cards directly. The best and immediate option is to get it at the arrival terminal of the Mumbai airport on landing. For other options, please refer “Where to get a SIM card” section of the blog.

@Rohan Unfortunately, there is no sim provider outlet at the Chennai airport.

Hi, I am a Nepalese citizen and while travelling to india, came to know that a valid visa is required to get a sim or you need an indian citizen adhar card. Nepalese and Bhutanese do not require visa, so no sim is available for them. Can someone put this message to the concerned body. Many nepalese travel to india for pilgrimage for longer durations in india, how can they remain disconnected with their family?

@Robin, thank you for highlighting this issue. We truly understand your problem. We’ll check and do our best to find a solution.

Hi I will in Goa, India Jan 2023 for around three months. I am looking for a mobile internet connection for my laptop and other electronic devices. Can you kindly suggest some reliable providers and what is the best product in terms of mobile routers. Additionally the cost. Thanks so much

Hello @Ron, Apologies for the late reply. Jio network works well in Goa when compared to Airtel. For mobile routers, you can check in your locality of stay as it highly depends on the area. Hope this helps.

A lot of blogs seems to be old. What is the position now in January 2023? We will be landing at I. G. Airport at the end of Jan. 2023. As an NRI how much is a prepaid SIM card from Air Tel for two months?

Hello @Rajesh. Our blog is updated frequently as and when required. The plans are same for both Indians and NRI. For Airtel-prepaid latest price list, please refer the official website .

Iam an airtel user and iam from bangladesh studying in india from 6 months. As i brought my sim card with my visa and passport.my visa is for 1 years and i have to live in for four years for study As my everything is connected with this sim now. Will it get disconnected after one year of visa.. Can i get the same number after disconnection?@

Hi Debiya, the SIM will not be disconnected after your VISA validity. You just have to recharge to keep the number active. If your number is deactivated, there is less possibility that you’ll get the same number. The best way is to retain your mobile number is by recharging.

' src=

Is there a way for westerners to top up online? I can’t use international cards, nor my Spanish Google pay or amazon pay to recharge my phone, and some days I run out of days, and the validity of my sim card is shorter than my trip in India. Will my airtel sim card work in Nepal?

Hi @Rafael, apologies for the delay in reply. We were trying to find a solution for you but unfortunately, we couldn’t figure out one yet. The only way, for now, is to do through the travel agents or the physical stores. We will update you if something comes up. Also, Indian SIM cards will not work in Nepal. You’ll have to purchase a new SIM card only.

* I ment “some days I run out of data”. I also want to thank you for this post, its very useful.

Hi, I am planning a two week trip to Delhi in April of this year 2023. I do have an unlocked Samsung phone, but it has no SIM card in it at the moment. I want to put an Indian SIM card in it when I get to IGI airport and will use Airtel. It’s just a matter of inserting the card and then calling a number to activate it? But I would call using the very same cell phone that will have the Indian SIM inserted in it? And how long should I wait until calling? Forgive my ignorance in this matter as I am not used to cell phones.

Yes, you’re right. Just insert the new SIM card and call any valid Indian number to get activated. A basic verification check on your submitted ID proof is done during the call. The activation will take at least 10-15 mins. People from the store desk will help you. Meanwhile, you can also use the WiFi services available at the IGI airport.

Thanks for the great information. I appreciate it very much. When you say “call any valid Indian number to get activated” you mean I could call a friend of mine who lives outside Delhi, and this is enough to “activate” the SIM? Or do I call a certain Airtel number in order to get activated? Again, sorry for being ignorant in these matters.

It’s our pleasure to assist you 🙂 You can call your friend and that is enough to activate your sim. The first call will be transferred to customer care to verify your identity. Once that is done, your sim will be activated in the next few minutes. And you are ready to go.

Alternatively, you can call 121 (for airtel) to activate your SIM. But it is not mandatory that you should call 121. Any first call that is made is forwarded to customer care for activation. We hope it is clear now.

Hello, sorry for asking so many questions. Regarding the data we will receive when we purchase an Airtel SIM at IGI airport, do you know how long it takes to activate it? I know the Indian phone number should be working soon after purchasing and activating the SIM, but how long before the data part is activated. And do we have to do anything or does it just start up?

@Gary, once the verification is successful, the number will be activated anywhere from 10 mins to 6 hours (max). If it takes more than 24 hours, contact the seller. Once the number is activated, you can use the services right away. You need not do anything to activate the services. Try restarting the device if you’re facing problems.

Hi We are moving to Bangalore for a few years. Could I get a local sim for the validity period of the visa instead of a tourist sim? What is the documentation required and is Airtel or Jio better? Thanks

Hello @Nish, most SIM cards bought at the airport are tourist SIM cards for which the validity can be extended as your VISA validity. Local SIM cards can also be bought by mentioning the same to the executive while purchasing (at airports especially). Kindly refer to the “Where To Get A SIM Card?” section of the blog for other places to buy SIM.

Local SIM card doesn’t have a validity period but the services will be deactivated if the SIM is inactive for 90 continuous days.

For the required documents, kindly refer to the “Documents Required” section of the blog.

In Bangalore, both Airtel and Jio have excellent connectivity. Hope this helps 🙂

We will travel in April to India for two weeks. As i understood so far, the best way to get a local sim card is to do it directly at the airport which is Mumbai in our case.

During investigating the different blogs it is not completly clear what we need to provide right now from our side. If i took all informations together is should be:

– A copy of the e-visa we just receveid yesterday. – A copy of our passport – One photo

Is this information still valid or do they changed something in the meanwhile.

From my perspective in the last 3 years there are a lot of changes in getting a sim card. Should be currently easier then before.

Kind regards, Markus

Welcome back to India @markus. The documents that you’ve mentioned are enough to purchase a SIM card. And the process has definitely improved a lot and it is a lot easier now. If you’re facing any issues, feel free to reach out to us. Wishing you a happy and safe journey.

Cheer, Twins.

Hi there. Namaste. I’m going to India next month. I live in Ireland, but I’m Polish and I have Polish passport. I don’t have address in my passport and in any other document. Here in Ireland we use electricity bill as a proof of address, is that ok in India too? Also do I need printed photo of myself or soft copy is enough? I was very misleaded by Delhi airport workers last year (I had transfer between terminals to local one) and I couldn’t buy a card, because I couldn’t go back to international arrivals zone, thanks for all info.

Namaste @Sylwia, Welcome back! Although a passport as address proof is highly recommended, other address proofs are also accepted. And yes, a printed photo of yourself is needed. We’re sorry to hear that. We always recommend you approach the airport helpdesk for any queries or doubts. Also, please note that domestic terminals don’t have stores to buy SIM cards, only the international terminals have this option. Hope this helps 🙂

Hi, I will travelling to Chennai, India next month (June 2023). Where can i buy Airtel / Jio sim card for foreigners in Chennai? What is the validity period ? Can the validity period be extended beyond 90 days? Thanks and regards, Ghanesan

Hi @Ghanesan, since SIM provider outlet is not available at the Chennai Airport, you can buy from the official retail stores spread across the city. Kindly refer the “where to buy SIM card” session of the blog. The tourist SIM card is generally valid for 30 days and the validity cannot be extended beyond 90 days.

Are SIM cards available at Bengaluru Airport? Am travelling to BLR in Late Dec 23, for 3 weeks.

@Agrippa, you can purchase SIM cards and dongles at the CXSOL counter next to arrival gate no. 10 at the Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru.

currently they moved the counter to the arrivel gate (INSIDE), so only available for international arrivals. The counter at domestic arrivals has been terminated.

Thanks for the update Nishta. In general, the SIM card counters are kept only at international arrivals.

Dear Partha, OCI cards are accepted. You should be able to purchase SIM cards without VISA in this case. Have a great journey 🙂

' src=

May i buy a SIM card in USA that will work in Mumbai area. I have OCI card. thx

You cannot buy Indian SIM card in the USA @Nuru. Upon arrival to India, you can purchase one at the Mumbai airport.

Hello. I do have a Visa Validity of 5 years expiring on Nov2027. In January2023, i got my Airtel Sim in Tamil Nadu. The Airtel Agent told me, that i can keep my number also while i am out of india if i dont Switch OFF the Sim, also without Recharging. After i left India Feb2023 i never Switched Off the Indian Sim neither recharged it After i left India, I got a message that per Govt laws, the Services of my sim will become ineffective after 90 days of use also if the Visa Validity is still there….YET, as i read in this article upon request it is possible to keep Sim Validity upto the Visa Validity. Also if automatically after 90days of Period Validity Sim is blocked. I tried to go on Airtel Web and to have an OTP to be sent to me , I couldnt get it. I wander if by tommorow when landing in India again i can recharge number after asking the Airtel to remove the Block on the SIM, of course in case this number has not be handled to someone else. Thankssss Alexxxx

Hello Alex. Apologies for the late reply. As per government laws, not using any services for longer period of time (>90 days) leads to deactivation. You have to either recharge or use any of their services to keep the SIM active. We will update the blog accordingly.

Is there a store in Goa International Airport Dabolim? I never saw one or at least they are not open at 5 AM in the morning. I am visiting Goa end of October 2023 and would like to have this information. I always struggle to get a Sim Card in Goa despite being an Indian because I am an NRI. They keep asking for reference person (I am a tourist!) and address proof (despite showing my passport and address page). By the time I can get my hands on a Sim Card..Its time to leave Goa.

We’re sorry that you’d to go through this. Unfortunately, there is no store at Goa International Airport as of now. We recommend you visit official retail outlets to buy SIM. You can find the nearby stores from here – Airtel and Jio They will be able to help you out.

Hi there, good morning. I will be travelling to India and landing in Delhi airport. I’m wondering if there a way for me to obtain a JIO eSIM before I even land in Delhi or if there are any JIO stores located in Delhi airport? I’m a foreigner and the reason I specifically want JIO is the pilgrimage that I’m going for is located in uttrakand region and based on some research, I’ve learnt that the only network that has coverage where I’m headed it JIO and that too with some luck. Kindly please advise me because I can’t find any information on this. Many thanks in advance and great blog you have running here, it’s really a lifeline for tourist that’s visiting and need some clarification.

Hey Sunny, as of now there are no JIO stores at the Delhi Airport. To buy eSIM even before you land in India. you can try Nomad, Airalo, or SimOptions. But they are a bit more pricier when compared to the physical Indian SIM cards.

Also, there is no such thing as only JIO works in Uttarakhand as you have mentioned. Airtel has vast network coverage in that area as well.

Hi, I don’t know if you still administer this blog, but I do have a question. I have a trip planned for March. I will buy an Airtel SIM card at IGI airport just as I did last year. My question is: can I use my phone with an Airtel SIM card in another state, such as Rajasthan or West Bengal?

Hi Gary, Yes. You can use the Airtel SIM card in all states of India.

Thank you so much for your information and patience. I appreciate it very much. 🙂

I flew in from UK. From my memory the counters were after you had cleared customs and immigration, collected your bags and are about to leave the secured area to meet the relatives waiting outside. I don't remember seeing any telephone shop before immigration or next to the baggage carrousel.

As I said before same shops are accessible even you had come out and can't return to arrival section any more.

Hope this helps.

bangalore tourist sim card

Thanks everyone for the guidance here--it worked great and I have a local SIM for my visit. Rs.900 for a 30-day validity SIM with 1.5GB 4G data dailiy and unlimited domestic calls/SMS.

I brought color photos--he used one--and photocopies of my passport and (paper business multiple-entry) visa page in my passport--he took his own copies of those. (Then he nearly forgot to return me my passport--luckily he found me before I left the building. It was 2am, I was tired and not paying enough attention, oops!)

My coworker arrived on a different day did not stop at this shop, and tried to get one from a shop in the city. So far she's had no luck: the shop(s) only want to deal with residents, not tourists or business visitors.

' class=

hi John, thanks for the information! Is it only a Vodafone shop or can I get Airtel too?

Or just buy a sim card from Amazon.

Search for india sim card. Your WhatsApp can be used for phone calls.

I'm from bangalore and it is real PAIN to get these things done just because they don't trust anyone.

You only get Vodafone. The entire process was very smooth and not a pain at all.

If you are at all aware of the link between pre paid sim cards and terrorism in India then you'd realise the reason behind the need to cross-check the applicant. It's not that difficult to pick up a fixed fare cab from BLR airport. There wasn't a huge difference in fare, at least not something that I couldn't afford. Once you reach your hotel use their WiFi. Of course you can also make yiur sim global roaming if you want to, but that's digression from this topic. I'd anyday take security over minor inconvenience.

Thanks everyone, the SIM purchase process was fairly painless at Bangalore international airport departure gates. As said, the shop was between exit doors 10 and 11 (as I recall), after baggage collection and customs. It was easy to get a Vodifone SIM (only one they provided) for 1.5GB/day for 1 or 2 months, with unlimited national calls. They did not provide recharge for international calls or extra data, but that was fairly easy to obtain in local shops.

One point to note: they only took cash, not credit card. And for foreigners coming in with no Indian currency, the ATM inside the terminal wasn't working (they often don't in India, but could work in the mornings). Luckily, this shop has an outside-the-gate window, so you can use the ATMs directly outside the gates, and return to pay at the shop without difficulty.

They used my photo, but not my passport and visa photocopies, of which they took their own copies. But he did take a picture for those who had no id photo.

The stand also completed the international calls recharge and extra data - all done at the one stop!

I find Airtel and Vodifone have a similar connection speed, but actual throughput use is better with Airtel. So if you need to transfer data, and can fly into Cochin, Airtel is preferable. Odd that it can be so easy for a foreigner to get a SIM at Bangalore, Cochin and Delhi (or at least it used to be there) airports, and maddeningly impossible anywhere else in India. Last time I arrived in Chennai I spent three days trying to get SIM cards and failed - finally got an Indian friend to buy on my behalf, to which I returned them on departing India. I know they have security problems in India, but I don't think that is the reason - I suspect it is the age-old issue of trying to get anything done in India... no rhyme or reason - just sheer luck and local knowledge.

Thanks for the info everyone. Thought I owe an update to the community as a pay back.

Arrived last night after 11pm and easily found the shop between exits 10 and 11. I've never seen exits out of airports numbered before, so wasn't sure what everyone was talking about, but all became clear as I cleared the customs and took my luggage. True, you can't miss it.

Few tips, no one attended the shop when I approached and it was closed, I asked the buggy driver standing nearby if he knew anything about it and he rang the number that was displayed on the window as obviously I couldn't ring. How nice of him. I was lucky. The shop guy showed up instantly and proceeded to orginising a sim for me. Needed only passport and a photo which I already had with me. Said didn't need my visa. I put my signature on few papers that he prefilled in for me. They do only take cash. Was 900 inr for me and I went to the money exchange which is few steps away to the left.

Someone said you can come back if you missed it. I believed it. Wrong! Coming back to the airport is not allowed through the same gates. I briefly jumped out to tell my driver I need few minutes more as saw him waiting with my name and owed security guys a long explanation why I needed to come back and practically got them to escort me back and thoroughly checking my documents again. Though as i discovered if you eventually got out, both the sim shop and the money exchange have windows looking outside through which they can serve you.

The sim was purchased at 11pm and was activated at 7.30am. All as was promised by the shop guy. You do need to follow a quick set of instructions to get the balance activated when your sim gets active and your allowance is on.

Ask for a copy of your receipt if you need it.

I think that's it.

When travelling in India, we usually stay for months at a time, so roaming on my Australian SIM becomes too expensive ($10/day). But I need to be contactable during this time for work and other purposes. I provide my Indian local number to a few frequent callers, but for the rest, I have to set up a Skype number, which takes redirects from my Aust number (the telco won't redirect to international numbers), and in turn the Skype number redirects to my Indian local number. Oddly enough it works quite well.

But my main concern is internet access, as I can work while travelling. I may look into Amazon or international SIMs, but having a local number in India is so useful - to be contactable by my Indian connections on a local number is critical.

' class=

Thanks to all who posted on this thread. The information here was most helpful in my securing a Sim card at the airport in Bangalore.

photographs - however, they didn't want it. They insisted on taking my photograph. I had to step into their little booth and sit in front of a white background for the picture. They also took a copy of my passport. That seemed to be the only piece of paper that they copied. It looked like they were using it to enter information in what looked like a form on their phones - so it seems like the whole process is electronic. I had an active sim card by the time I left the store. The whole process took no more than 20 minutes and was relatively painless.

My experience was so positive that I told my daughter to get a sim card as well when she arrived in BLR a couple of days later. Her flight came in at 2:30 a.m. and her card couldn't be activated until after 7 a.m. She was given a instructions to activate the card - the instructions are straightforward and easy to follow.

1. Your sim card will be activated immediately if you arrive after 7 a.m. The two guys in the store did it all for me and installed the sim card in my phone. They made sure that it was functional before I left the store. I'm not sure what the daily shut off is - my sleep deprived brain may have heard the guy

say 11 p.m. but I'm not sure.

2. CASH!! Please have cash (Indian Rupees) with you. A couple of people were turned away because they didn't have cash. There is an ATM by the exit doors where you can get Rupees.

Good news MaramG, and interesting to note the activation timeframe for late night arrivals.

Thought I would contribute my experience given this forum post helped me immensely.

- Location of store is between exit 10 & 11, next to the cafe/coffee stand. It is manned by one person.

- All he required was passport, and an address in India where you were staying (hotel address was accepted).

- The store sells Vodafone 4G SIM cards. The price is 900 INR for 1 month- unlimited local calls, 100 SMS, no international calls. The price is about 3x the normal price (I came across this when I downloaded the Vodafone app).

- The SIM card is provided in the combined standard/micro/nano sizing

- You can pay an extra 100 INR to get instant activation (the salesman will do this for you). However, the activation seems variable as it worked for a friend of mine, but not for me. The activation, otherwise, took about 5 hours (i.e. occurred at 5am).

- The SIM card installs some "third party" apps automatically- i.e. Amazon apps. They can be deleted. Also note that you receive a few random spam texts.

- Although a friend of mine had better coverage, the Vodafone 4G coverage is, from my experience, poor. Probably the coverage may be variable, or may be related to phones (I use OnePlus 5). Apparently another issue is that larger providers (e.g. Jio) often crowd out smaller providers

My experience:

-- Bangalore- around airport- worked fine

-- Mangalore- worked fine

-- Mookambika (rural)- often no service

-- Rajapur- no service

-- Pune - no service

-- Mumbai - no service

I found that calling via the phone line was more reliable than data (i.e. Whatsapp). Phone line clarity was good.

Otherwise, safe travels. If you're reading still wondering whether to purchase your tickets or not, do it. Be open to the adventure. Amazing, amazing country.

' class=

I failed to get the SIM card in the airport

1) ATM inside of the arrivals hall didn't work, so I stepped outside thinking that the Vodaphone office have 2 windows (inside and outside).

2) found a working ATM outside, but the shop declined my attempts to submit my paperworks from the outside window. Apparently the new process requires them to take the photo of the person and they can't do it from the outside :(

So even if ATM doesn't work, exchange some money inside of the arrivals security area.

I ended up getting a Vodaphone SIM card in the city which required 2 visits to the store (first one to get the SIM and a promise that it will activate in 5 hours after I call the number provided, and second one after activation failed and they had to do some manual steps to make it to happen).

Does anyone know if a similar SIM availability shop exists at Kolkata International airport?

Volodymyr O, that ATM was out of order for me also, but I processed my paperwork first from inside, then only went outside for the money and paid at the outside window.

Just arrived last night. After customs, found the booth between exit 10 and 11. It was still open after 2am. No more need to take a picture with you (as I did), they will take one and have set up a chair with white background just for the purpose. They took copies of passport/visum, noted home address and address in India and gave me the SIM. I had to call to get it activated a few hours later. As a check, you need to enter the last 4 digits of your passport number. My passport number does not end with 4 digits, so I had to enter fake digits to get a representative on the phone who verified my address and enabled the card (note: when it's connecting to the representative, the phone line sounds dead - just wait). This was all explained well by the person at the booth. I paid 900 rupies for a month.

I flew into Bangalore yesterday (daytime) thanks for all these posts - I was well prepared- 30 day SIM was activated within 15 mins - hassle free !

A big vote for these guys. Okay they are not the cheapest but given the problems with getting sim cards in India they are great.

As others have reported activated after about 15 minutes which was all explained clearly.
