Shore excursions from the cruise ship to Barcelona

Tips and activities for a shore leave - 1 day to experience barcelona.

A shore leave by Bus Turístic on your own

A shore leave by Bus Turístic on your own

Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and the Mediterranean. The city has plenty to offer for a shore excursion to enjoy a nice day trip from the cruise ship. Either on your own or with our tours. From the Cruise ship to Barcelona for a day: In Barcelona you can spend the day in a variety of ways.

  • Individual and private excursions and tours
  • No booking of expensive excursions on board the ship needed

Hop-on hop-off city tour - the classic for the shore excursion

The convertible bus is perfect for exploring Barcelona on your own during a shore excursion: two lines (three in the summer) will take you to almost all of the city's sights. It is very easy and cheap.

From the harbor to the city or to the airport

How to get quickly and easily from Barcelona's cruise port to the city or airport:

Cruise port ferry

You can get on and off at more than 40 stops at will and also change between the lines. All you need is a 1-day ticket for the Turístic Bus, as the Hop on Hop-off bus in Barcelona is officially called. The pure driving time of the year-round operated red and blue line is approximately 2-2.5 hours. With roundtrip to the cruise port and having a look at some attractions it is perfect for a land stay from about five hours onward.

From the port, you can easily reach the Turístic Bus with the T3 (PortBús) shuttle bus. The red line will take you directly to the terminus of Portbús, just steps away from the Columbus Monument, and your shore excursion can begin.

Private City Sightseeing Tour - we pick you up from the ship

Especially comfortable is a shore excursion with a  Private City Sightseeing Tour .

During our 3, 4 or 8 hour Private City Tour we will show you the highlights of Barcelona. We are also happy to consider your interests and show you the most beautiful sights and also places away from tourism.

On our City Tours, you have the opportunity to stretch your legs and enjoy the view of the city. On request, you can enjoy a Tapas Break in a very nice restaurant.

At the end of the Private City Tour, we bring you back to your cruise ship or to a point of interest, where you can then continue the shore excursion individually. In this case, you can return to the ship by public transport or by taxi.

If you would like to visit one or more attractions during or after the Private City Tour, we recommend the following:

Directly from the end of Portbús starts the old town and the Ramblas, which are ideal for a stroll through the city. The old quarter Barri Gòtic, which is located on the right side of the Ramblas, is an ideal place for a stroll during the shore excursion.

Here you will experience 2,000 years of history since Roman settlement. The mighty city walls are still to admire today, but also a lot of shops, museums, bars and restaurants attract the guests for a walk.

We are happy to show you our city. Here you will find a selection of guided tours, all within a stone's throw of the PortBús terminal stop:

  • With our city tours in the Gothic Quarter and the city tours in the Raval district you will learn a lot about Barcelona. Both start near the PortBús stop.
  • Visit of the Palau de la Música followed by a tour to the most beautiful buildings of Modernism, the Catalan Art Nouveau style.
  • In the morning you can visit the opera Gran Teatre del Liceu
  • On the Columbus Monument you have a good view of the old town and Port Vell, the Old Port
  • Santa Maria del Mar - You may know the church from the bestselling novel "The Cathedral of the Sea"
  • The Camp Nou , stadium of FC Barcelona
  • Walk on the beach of Barcelona and the Barceloneta district

A bike ride as a shore excursion is another way to pass the time ashore:

  • With a guided Bike Tour we show you the most beautiful sights of the city. Also available as a private tour, you can choose the date and time of your choice. The bike tours take 2.5 to 4 hours.
  • On your own with the rental bike . For example, just along the coast.

Book your Barcelona Shore Excursion here:

  • Hop-on Hop-off Tour
  • Half-Day Tour with pick-up
  • Privte Full-Day Tour with pick-up
  • Private Full-Day Tour with pick-up

Shore excursion on your own

Of course, a shore excursion of 5 to 8 hours is not enough to see everything worth seeing. Here we have a small selection of the most important buildings and attractions: These should be on your shortlist if you want to see and discover Barcelona on your own. You can choose two or three of them for your trip.

Top attractions for your shore leave

Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló is one of the most important and famous buildings of the architect Antoni Gaudí. The visit is easy, as this top attraction is located on two lines of the Bus Turístic. For the visit of the Casa Batlló you should plan 1-1.5 hours.

Casa Milà - La Pedrera

Just one stop from Casa Batlló is Casa Milà , another masterpiece by Gaudí. It is also on the UNESCO World Heritage List. For the Casa Milà you should plan 1-1.5 hours.

Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia is certainly one of Barcelona's most impressive sights. If you start your morning sightseeing tour, you can join our tour of the façade at 2:00 pm and enter the church. For the Sagrada Familia you should plan about 2-2.5 hours including the guide.

Camp Nou

Visit Camp Nou , the stadium of FC Barcelona. Even non-football fans will be impressed. The largest football stadium in Europe is located directly on the blue line of the Bus Turístic. You do not have to set your time with our tickets. For the Camp Nou you should plan about 1.5 hours.

Montjuïc und Telefèric

Montjuïc and Telefèric : this mountain is located between the city and the port of goods. From the top you have a wonderful view over Barcelona and the harbor. With the cable car Telefèric, which starts at the bus station of the same name, you can easily reach the top. For the Montjuïc you should plan incl. Telefèric approx. 1.5-2 hours.

Monument a Colom

The observation tower of the Columbus Memorial at the beginning / end of the red line is a good introduction to your shore excursion. For the tower you should plan about 30 minutes.

Park Güell

The Park Güell is beautiful. Around 80% of the park can be visited without entry ticket. We can end our City Sightseeing Ttour there and have a look at this UNESCO monument in peace (about 1-1.5 hours, drive to the ship by taxi or public transport). Advance booking for the Monumental Zone is required.

Santa Maria del Mar

You may know the church of Santa Maria del Mar from the bestselling novel "The Cathedral of the Sea". For the visit of the church you should plan about 1 hour.

Gotisches Viertel

In this quarter - also known as Barri Gòtic - Barcelona has its historical origins: the Romans founded Barcino here. Of course, you will find many Gothic buildings, as well as the largest Roman excavations outside Rome. The tour of the Gothic Quarter takes about 2-2.5 hours.

Book your accommodation in Barcelona here! All categories. 1-5*-hotel rooms, apartments, hostels.

Tickets for the observation deck on the 33rd floor of Torre Glòries. Enjoy a fantastic view.

One day in barcelona from a cruise ship (+ self-guided walking tour).

Are you wondering how to visit Barcelona on a cruise?

Then you’ve come to the right place. I have visited this vibrant city on multiple occasions, including on a cruise, and am excited to share the best way to spend one day in Barcelona from a cruise ship.

I’ll level with you; it’s impossible to see all of Barcelona’s highlights in this short space of time. But this 1-day Barcelona itinerary , specially designed for cruise passengers, will help you make the most of your time ashore.

At the end of the article, you’ll find useful information on getting from the Barcelona cruise terminal to the city centre and how to get around .

Tips for Visiting Barcelona from a Cruise Ship

There is no shortage of things to do in the cosmopolitan capital of Spain’s Catalonia region. One of Spain’s great cities , Barcelona is renowned for its art and architecture – notably Antoni Gaudi –  glorious beaches and a first-class culinary scene.

The best way to see Barcelona in one day is on foot. Make the most of your time ashore with my self-guided walking tour .

The total distance from start to finish is 5 km .

To save time, and ease your aching feet, you can take the metro back from La Sagrada Familia, the final stop on this itinerary. This will bring you to Drassanes station at the southern end of La Rambla.

How much you will be able to see will depend on your time in port. If you have limited time ashore, you will need to sacrifice visiting the inside of one or more of the Gaudí properties on Passeig de Gràcia.

But don’t be tempted to skip visiting the inside of La Sagrada Família; it is extraordinary. And even if you’re not keen on visiting churches, it’s worth visiting Barcelona Cathedral, if only for the views from its roof.

Are you spending more than one day in Barcelona? If so, check out the best things to do in two days in Barcelona.

One Day in Barcelona: Self-Guided Walking Tour Map

To help you on your way, here’s a map with the main sights that you will see during your day in Barcelona. If needed, click on the image for an interactive map with directions.

Best time of year to visit Barcelona: May to June or during autumn (fall)

Currency: Euro (€). Cash is widely used, and most places accept major credit cards. Check here for live exchange rates.

Tipping: Tips are not expected when ordering a coffee or a drink in Barcelona. Although a 5 -10% service charge is usually added to your restaurant bill, it is common practice to add a small tip (5%) on top of this.

What to See in Barcelona in One Day from a Cruise Ship

During your day in Barcelona, you will be transported back through the centuries by exploring its enchanting Gothic Quarter, elegant plazas, majestic cathedral and superb Modernista architecture . There will also be time to stop for lunch in one of Europe’s greatest food markets.

The first stop on your 1-day Barcelona itinerary is Port Vell, the city’s old port, which is a short distance from the cruise terminal. This marina, which is lined with palm trees and public art, is one of the most picturesque parts of the city.

Nearby is a famous Barcelona landmark, the Columbus Monument . Rising 60 meters above the southern end of La Rambla, this monument was built in 1888 to commemorate Christopher Columbus’s first voyage to the Americas.

Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter

Strolling around the Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic) is one of the best things to do in Barcelona in one day. With its charming squares and a warren of narrow medieval streets, this is one of the oldest districts of Barcelona.

Plaça Reial , the Royal Square, is lined with bars and towering palm trees and features street lamps designed by Gaudi.

The smaller Plaça del Rei is where the Catholic Monarchs are thought to have received Columbus on his return from his first New World voyage.

two medieval buildings at right angles to each other

Barcelona Cathedral

Your next stop is the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia.

Barcelona’s Cathedral was built between the 13th and 15th centuries and has a 14 th Century cloister with orange trees, magnolias and resident swans.

For panoramic views over Barcelona, take the lift to the cathedral’s roof .

Address: Pl. de la Seu

Opening hours: Barcelona Cathedral is open to tourists between 9.30 am and 6.30 pm on weekdays, between 9.30 and 5.15 on Saturdays and from 2 pm until 5 pm on Sundays. It is open for prayer and worship outside of these hours. Further information is  here .

Lunch at Mercat de la Boqueria

Are you feeling peckish?

Barcelona’s famous Boqueria Market , officially known as Mercat de San Josep, is located on the opposite side of La Rambla from the Gothic Quarter. This maze of more than 300 stalls sells delicious products that typify Barcelona’s cuisine and is the perfect place to stop for lunch.

La Rambla (also known as Las Ramblas) is one of the landmarks that is synonymous with Barcelona. Stretching for 1.2 km through the heart of the city centre, this pedestrianised boulevard links Port Vell to Plaça de Catalunya.

Plaça de Catalunya

You have now reached Plaça de Catalunya, located at the northern end of La Rambla.

massive empty plaza flanked by two large buildings under blue sky

Separating the old town and Eixample district, this is Barcelona’s beating heart and is a favourite meeting place for locals and visitors alike.

No one-day Barcelona itinerary would be complete without a smattering of Gaudí’s extraordinary properties.

Two of these – Casa Batlló and Casa Milà – are on Passeig de Gràcia, close to Plaça de Catalunya. Our final stop is the world-famous Sagrada Família, which is a 15-20 minute walk from Casa Milà.

The UNESCO-listed Gaudí properties included in this itinerary are extremely popular. To avoid disappointment, I highly recommend that you buy tickets in advance . This is essential for La Sagrada Familia.

Casa Batlló

Antoni Gaudi’s one-of-a-kind architectural creations partly define Barcelona and are not to be missed.

Casa Batlló is the first of his two great buildings on Passeig de Gràcia.

exterior of casa-batllo with mosaics and curved balconies

Taking his inspiration from the shapes and colours found in marine life, Gaudi created this whimsical building between 1904 and 1906.

Even if you don’t have time to take a peek inside, it is well worth stopping by to admire its façade, which is covered with mosaics that are reminiscent of fish scales.

The wavy and curvy design – no sharp angles here – is continued inside with exceptional details, including beautiful stained glass windows and colourful tiles.

La Pedrera (Casa Milà)

La Pedrera, or Casa Milà , is the second Gaudi building on Passeig de Gràcia.

This is an atypical Gaudi building. It has a colourless, stone-like appearance and looks like it has been carved from a massive rock, softened with wavy lines and iron ornaments.

From its rooftop, there is a bird’s eye view over Barcelona and of Casa Milà’s chimneys and ventilation towers, which are artworks in themselves.

Address : Pg. de Gràcia, 92

La Sagrada Família

End your day in Barcelona at the city’s most iconic landmark, La Sagrada Família .

La Sagrada Família has been a work in progress since 1882. Gaudí was still working on it before his death in 1926, aged 73.

The outside of this masterpiece of Modernista architecture features symbolic carvings and is crowned by honeycomb Gothic towers.

Inside, it is an explosion of colour amongst columns shaped like tree trunks, underneath the canopy of a psychedelic forest.

Opening hours: The Basilica of the Sagrada Família has seasonal opening hours. Check here for current information.

Admission cost: In 2023, it costs €26 to visit the Sagrada Família.

What is the best way to get to Sagrada Família from Barcelona cruise port?

The quickest way of getting to La Sagrada Família from the cruise port is by taxi. This journey should take about 15 minutes.

To travel between Barcelona cruise terminal and the Sagrada Família by public transport, take the cruise shuttle bus to the Columbus Monument at the end of La Rambla. This is close to Drassanes metro station where you should catch the green line to Diagonal.

At Diagonal, change onto the blue line and alight at the stop Sagrada Família.

Other Things to Do During a Barcelona Cruise Stop

We all have different tastes and preferences when it comes to things that we like to do in a new city. If these places don’t rock your boat, here are a few further suggestions for what to do in Barcelona in one day.

Walk amongst the sharks at Barcelona Aquarium

The Barcelona Aquarium in Port Vell is one of the best of its kind. Its enormous Oceanarium – a transparent 80-meter-long tunnel – allows you to walk among the sharks, ocean sunfish and many other species.

How to Get to Barcelona City Centre from the Cruise Terminal

As Barcelona’s cruise terminal is the starting and arrival point for many Western Mediterranean cruise itineraries, it is important to check at which operating terminal your ship will berth.

Large cruise ships dock at the  Moll Adossat terminals (Terminals A, B, C and D). Terminal D is the farthest away of the four quays and is approximately 4 km from La Rambla.

Walking to the southern end of La Rambla will take you 25 minutes from Terminal A and 45 minutes from Terminal D.

The  Cruise Bus is a shuttle bus that runs between the  Moll Adossat  cruise ship terminals and the Columbus Monument at the end of La Rambla. In 2023, the fare is €3 euro one-way or €4.50 return.

How to Get Around Barcelona

person holding a barcelona metro ticket

The best way to visit Barcelona in one day is on foot. However, to return from La Sagrada Familia to the cruise port, your best bet is to take a metro service to Drassanes station, close to the Columbus Monument.

A ticket for an individual journey costs €2.40 in 2023.

If you don’t fancy tackling the city’s metro system, Barcelona’s hop-on-hop-off bus is another option to consider.

A one-day ticket gives you access to two routes that include stops in this Barcelona itinerary and more. An audio commentary is also available.

Exploring Barcelona on an Organised Tour

But perhaps you prefer someone else to take care of all of the arrangements, you want to benefit from the knowledge of a local guide or you’re looking for something a little bit different? Then why not explore Barcelona’s highlights on an organised activity?

Although your cruise line will gladly provide a shore excursion, you can often do better using an independent tour operator. Just make sure that you have enough time to make it back on board before your cruise ship sails.

Paella Cooking Experience + Boqueria Market Tour

This is an ideal experience for any foodies. In this 2.5-hour tour, you’ll make sangria and learn how to rustle up an authentic paella, one of the things for which Spain is most famous .

Don’t want to break a sweat? Take it easy and explore the city on this e-bike tour .

Alternatively, get up close to the city’s famous monuments on this segway tour.

Is Barcelona Safe for Solo Travellers?

Spain is not only one of the best places to travel alone in Europe , especially if you are a first-time solo traveller . I would go so far as to say that it is one of the best solo travel destinations in the world .

Staying safe is a priority for female solo travellers . Although Barcelona is considered a safe city, it is notorious for pickpockets, especially on the metro and La Rambla.

Just use your common sense. Remain vigilant, keep your belongings close to you and only carry the bare minimum. Use your cruise cabin safe to store valuables.

Is it Worth Going to Barcelona for One Day?

If you are visiting Barcelona on a cruise, the reality is that you will have just a day in town.

Whilst one day in Barcelona will not be enough time to see everything, it will allow you to see many of its major landmarks and give you a good feel for this Spanish metropolis.

If you are disembarking at the port of Barcelona and have an extra day to spare, make the most of your time there by booking a hotel room and exploring the charming Catalan capital over two days.

Hi I'd be greatful for advice on whether it is feasible to get ourselves from the port to camp nou? If so what's the best mode of transport ie taxi? Or are we better to do our tour operators excursion?

' class=

a taxi or a tour are the easier options as they are a door to door service. on your own you could go by metro (L3 from drassanes to palau reial) or by bus (#D20 there are a stop just in front of the museu maritim and a second on paral·lel - stop codes 2617 and 1326 - dont know which one is closer).

forgot to say that by bus you should drop off at Les Corts-Aurora Bertrana stop, code 1713.

In this case you can either get a taxi from the cruise port to Camp Nou (should be around 20€) or go out of the port with the T3 Portbus (blue bus - 2€ one way or 3€ for a return ticket) and out of the port take the L3 metro to the "Palau Reial" station" (you can, also, take the D20 bus - it stops closer to the stadium but the journey itself takes longer - on the way back the stop is a bit further away).

With public transport you can pay the single journey 2.15€ but if there are more than 3 of you or if you want to see other thing get the T-10 care - 10 journeys, 9.95€ - it's a multi person card so all of you can use it (just pass it once for each of you) and it also includes up to 3 changes to different means of transport during 75 minutes to complete your journey.

You'll find all the information on the public transport system, including tariffs and card types, in this article

When we visit Barcelona in July, we are planning a visit to the Nou Camp (for the males in our party). What is the best way to get there?

You can take a taxi. The Bus Turistic makes a stop there.

By public transport (copied from the official fc.barcelona.com website):

Bus lines: 7, 15, 43, 67, 68, 74, 75, L12, L50, L60 and L62.

Metro: Line 3 (Get off at Maria Cristina or Les Corts) and Line 5 (Get off at Collblanc or Badal)

We visited the Nou Camp and the museum when using the Bus Turistic HOHO service. But if this is to be a single stop trip a taxi would be cheaper and the metro is also excellent. The stadium is fantastic and the museum is excellent, well worth going.

OttoCal

Note that if you visit on a Sunday or match day, the hours are shorter, and on match days you can't go onto the pitch.

We found after some experimentation with the metro that the best route for us personally was to the the L3 line Direction Zona Universitaria, and get off at Maria Cristina. From there it is a direct shot (5 minute walk) to the ticket purchasing area of the Nou Camp. This could turn out to be important if you are directionally challenged, like me . And then you aren't walking all around the stadium, like when we approached from the L5 line stop.

Also- there may be 2 lines at the ticket counters if you are visiting in season. One for the museum/tour and one for ticket purchasing. Be sure you get into the right one!

Fun tour! There are also a couple of opportunities for photo shots where they will take a photo of your family with some cute background and offer it for sale (only buy if you like the photo- no obligation). Comprable pricing to Disney, I think. I don't remember, but we did buy 1 picture. It was us in the press room holding a jersey- cute.

First of all it would be easier to help you if you tell us from where are you departing, if you are going to camp nou from your hotel, then tell us where is your hotel. But I can recommend you to do it by metro, there's a metro station very near the stadium.

About the tour of camp nou, I can tell you that it is very nice, the museum is really big and it has a lot of things to see and also buy in the store. If you like soccer, you must go to camp nou, it is an incredible experience.

I would also recommend you to buy your tickets in advance (you can do it in expedia, orbitz or directly in the fc barcelona web page) because there's a lot of people who goes there and sometimes the tickets get sold out.

Good luck, have a nice trip!!!

Greetings!!!

Current prices for stade and museum are 18Euros each, hours on Sunday are 10 till 2. Buy tickets online before arrival to be sure of a place.

Spain: New return date to Camp Nou has been set!

Later than initially planned

Initially, FC Barcelona's management intended to coincide the return with the club's 125th anniversary on November 29. However, they ultimately decided not to rush, and the first match at the new Camp Nou took place on December 15 . This would be one of the last matches before the holiday break. It is expected that around 60% of all seats will be usable by then, which is about 63,000 seats.

Work is progressing faster

Everything indicates that there won't be major issues meeting the deadline, although construction company Limak, responsible for the renovation, has been working extra hours since April . Working continuously from 8:00 to midnight Monday to Friday and from 10:00 to midnight on Saturdays, they are striving to adhere to the designated schedule so that FC Barcelona can move to the new facility by the end of the year.

What about ticket prices?

A board meeting is scheduled for April 25 to discuss an important matter concerning Camp Nou, namely the pricing of season tickets for the next two years. In the upcoming season, Barcelona's team will still play at Montjuïc for a while, so these prices will certainly vary due to the planned return to Camp Nou.

Initial indications suggest that ticket prices will increase . However, it remains to be seen whether the price hike will take effect at the start of the 2024/2025 season or will be delayed until the complete completion of the stadium, which is expected by 2026. The latter option seems more probable because the capacity at Camp Nou will be limited for many months. Practically all VIP boxes are already available for sale. There are 14 of them, each priced at €8,000, totaling €120,000 for the season .

The Magnitude of Barcelona's New Camp Nou

The new Spotify Camp Nou will debut with a capacity for 60,000 spectators (60% of the total) and with two of the three planned stands, as confirmed by Barcelona president Joan Laporta during a site visit conducted by the board on Wednesday.

Laporta led the Barcelona delegation on the third site visit. The last one took place in November, and since then, the renovation has progressed as planned.

Guardiola to Return to Barcelona – As President?

The recent actions have focused on the pillars of the structure of the new third stand and have continued with a series of repairs on the first and second stands, as reported by the club.

In statements to Catalan media, Laporta explained that everything is "going as planned." "Everything is moving forward, and soon we will be able to make the facilities available to the members of Barça. It's very emotional because it will make Barça have the best stadium in the world, a unique stadium," he insisted.

The leader spoke of the return of activity with two renovated stands, with a capacity for approximately 60,000 spectators. "I am very proud of how the work is progressing," he indicated.

"The foundations of the third stand are already being laid, the two stands we have now, the first and second, are on track to have the seats installed, and everything is being leveled," he commented.

Xavi could stay at Barcelona!

Laporta expressed satisfaction because these advancements are the result of a decision made knowing that fans would understand it because it was "a dream of Barcelona," to have "the best stadium in the world."

"A collective dream of Barcelona is coming true, and it's very exciting. It's history, the result of the decision we made at the time, but also of the understanding of the members and fans, who knew we had to sacrifice to achieve it," he said.

Barcelona set date for return to Camp Nou

B arcelona have set a date for their return to the Camp Nou and hope to reopen the famous old stadium to fans on December 15th at 60% capacity.

Work to renovate the stadium continues to be on track with the Barcelona board hopeful that the team will be able to return home before the turn of the year, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Barcelona did recently issue an update on the current status of the Camp Nou which showed exactly how things are looking right now.

The initial plan had been to open the stadium in time for the club’s 125th anniverary in November but it seems Barca won’t quite meet that deadline.

Barcelona are instead hoping to play a La Liga home game just before Christmas in front of around 63,000 spectators which is about 60% of the total capacity at the ground.

The Catalans have spent the current season playing their home games at Montjuic but don’t have too much longer to wait to head back to their proper home.
