Global hitmaker Bebe Rexha announces 2023 North American tour dates. The news follows the recent arrival of the multi-platinum artist's '70s-infused single "Heart Wants What It Wants" and the ongoing chart domination of David Guetta collaboration "I'm Good (Blue)."

"Heart Wants What It Wants" is the hotly anticipated follow-up to the global smash "I'm Good (Blue)" - a reunion with super-producer David Guetta that riffs on Eiffel 65's seminal "Blue (Da Ba Dee)." After a snippet went viral on TikTok in late 2022, the banger topped the charts in more than 20 countries and has amassed over 1.1 billion streams. It reached #1 at Top 40, Hot AC and Dance radio and was nominated for a GRAMMY® Award along with winning an MTV European Music Award.

After cutting her teeth as an in-demand songwriter (she penned Eminem and Rihanna's "The Monster," among other hits), Rexha started churning out smashes of her own including multi-platinum G-Eazy collaboration "Me, Myself & I" and Martin Garrix-produced club sensation "In The Name Of Love." In 2017, she struck gold with "Meant To Be," a country duet with Florida Georgia Line that was certified Diamond (10x Platinum). Rexha has since garnered over 16 billion cumulative streams.

"Meant To Be" earned Rexha a nomination for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 61st Annual GRAMMY® Awards, where she was also up for Best New Artist. The pop star has released two critically acclaimed albums, 2018's Expectations and 2021's Better Mistakes. Expect to hear beloved hits from all of those project's on Rexha's upcoming tour as well as recent smashes like "Heart Wants What It Wants."

Recent tour reviews

Bebe Rexha was amazing in Charlotte. From the second she took the stage, the show was nonstop. The entire audience was so into it, singing along to all her hits.

She has incredible stages presence. This one was of my favourite performances this year. I can't wait to see live again.

Bebe is so fan oriented and body positive. On top of that, she puts on a dope live show with her incredible voice, amazing stage chemistry and the fact that she is willing to be a little wild on stage!

whitney-plantz’s profile image

I have to say this review might be subjective because I've been a huge fan of Bebe since a few time now. I saw her in Paris and she was amazing ! Her looks were on point and her voice live is way better than I expected. She has great energy and her voice sounds less "nasal" on stage in real life. I highly suggest anyone who likes her music to see her live because she sings so well and interacts with the public a lot. What I like about her is that it sounds real when she does it. She's always honest. She doesn't let the different languages come in the way of communication.

Bebe Rexha

The 1970s — synonymous with great female singer-songwriters and the precursor to Eurodance – represent everything Bebe Rexha had envisioned herself proclaiming to the world with her third and self-titled studio album that arrives today via Warner Records .

“It’s about feeling empowered even while feeling uncertain — of change, growing up, self-reflecting,” Rexha tells Variety . “I’ve always been open in my lyrics — and with life in general — when it comes to talking about what I’ve been through…this album is about expression and tells a story about having a change of heart.”

Popular on Variety

“There’s nothing like playing songs live — especially songs like these,” she says, adding that the pumping grooves of “I’m Not High, I’m In Love” would make for a great tour opener. “When you’re there and you’re feeling the energy that radiates off the fans, it’s a special kind of connection … and because it’s been six years, I feel like that’s going to be so important for me and my fan base.”

The setlist is looking to be a career-spanning take of her most beloved hits, catering to her day-one fans who lovingly call themselves the Rexhars. “There’s going to be a lot of fun segments… a lot of like older music from my old EPs like ‘All Your Fault: Pt. 1’ and ‘Expectations.’ There’s going to be medleys and moments dedicated to bringing the fans back to build up to the new stuff,” she says.

When the song was officially released as a single in August, it topped the charts in more than a dozen countries including the U.K., Australia, and Canada, and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.

“The song was such a big moment, and it needed to be on the album but we needed to see where it would fit within the music that had more of a 70s flavor,” she says. “‘I’m Good (Blue)’ is followed by ‘Call on Me’ on the track list for that reason.”

“Call on Me” is produced by Burns (Lady Gaga, Ava Max), who is behind the song’s addictive dance hook. He also produced Rexha’s first solo dance hit, “Sacrifice,” off her last album. “We were both aiming for like Stevie Nicks ‘Edge of Seventeen’ in the verses but tied together with that classic dance hook. It kind of put a bow on the whole project.”

Maintaining ownership of her femininity and identity as an artist, “Bebe” has scattered moments of powerful and honest lyricism. In “I Am,” a track inspired by the plight of anti-abortion legislation, Rexha chants about being a woman, a rebel and most importantly: being enough. “No matter what, I’m going to do whatever the fuck I’m feeling – especially when it comes to songwriting. I just love to write,” she says.

“I lie awake inside a dream and I run away from me / the seasons change right under my feet,” Rexha sings in “Seasons,” as Parton’s layered harmonies fill the sonic space. “I was in the studio, and we recorded the guitar and my vocals at the same time and didn’t edit much — just sang through a straight take. Then Dolly added her vocals and the result was just perfect.”

Parton’s participation had long been a dream for Rexha who grew up with the country icon’s songs on repeat at the hands of her grandmother. Still, the road to winning over a feature from Parton wasn’t easy as she had previously “declined nicely” to Rexha’s collaboration requests.

“She wrote me a thoughtful, handwritten note once just to say she was grateful for the request but the song I had submitted was about heaven and hell, and well, she didn’t have any interest in singing about hell that way,” she explains. “I understood completely, and the gesture was so thoughtful. I knew one day there would be a perfect song for us to share and ‘Seasons’ was it. She sent me her verse and her harmonies, and we got to film this really fun video together.”

The music video for “Seasons” was shot in Parton’s Nashville compound, and was a “laugh-fest,” as Rexha describes. “Dolly is so funny — one of the funniest people I’ve met. I was in awe of her, wowed by her six-inch heels. I just [have] such strong admiration for her, not just as an artist, but as a songwriter. I started my career as a songwriter and would look up to Dolly because she’s able to write songs for other people, while also having success for herself.”

She’s set to debut a collaboration PNAU and Ozuna called “Stars” in May, followed by the official release of “If Only I,” a single she previewed during her guest slot with DJ duo Two Friends at Coachella. In the meantime, she’s working on drumming up the deluxe issue of “Bebe,” which will see the inclusion of an unreleased track titled “Now You Don’t Exist.”

“Fans kept asking for it and they tell me that they think I’m crazy for leaving it out of the main album,” she says. “They’re very opinionated — which I love… If I post a snippet of something and they want it, they’re going to keep writing to me until they get it. I love the dynamic we have… seeing how involved they are and how passionate they are about my music means everything.”

Bebe Rexha Makes Coachella Debut in Edgy Combat Boots

B ebe Rexha wore black combat boots to bring popstar realness to the Coachella 2024 stage on Sunday. The "I'm Good (Blue)" singer laced up her tall smooth leather boots to sing, dance and hair-flip during her energetic Coachella performance debut.

Bebe Rexha has donned a lot of all-black looks lately. At the 2024 Billboard Women In Music celebration in March, Rexha wore black pointed-toe pumps. At the 2024 GRAMMY Awards in February, she wore black platform sandals, and a pair of sleek black pointed-toe stiletto boots at the Warner Music Group Pre-GRAMMY Party.

The Grammy-nominated singer's set included her hit collabs from over the years, including 2019's "Call You Mine" with EDM duo The Chainsmokers and 2017's "Meant to Be" with country act Florida Georgia Line. She closed her performance by bringing out French DJ David Guetta, for their Eiffel 65-sampling 2023 smash hit, "I'm Good (Blue)."

Friday marked the start of Coachella 2024, which was headlined by Lana Del Rey and also featured sets from Lil Uzi Vert, Ateez, Sabrina Carpenter and Justice, among many others. Tyler, The Creator headlined Saturday at Coachella, and Doja Cat headlined Sunday, donning five different, eccentric looks and shoes. Weekend 2 will kick off on April 19 and see all the artists returning to Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif.

Bebe Rexha's Shoe Style

The New York-born singer and songwriter has been active in the music industry since 2010, penning chart-topping pop hits for herself and artists like Rihanna and G-Eazy. Her red carpet and on-stage style has evolved over the years, although she often leans into glamorous and edgy styles. On the red carpet, she opts for bold boots and heels from designers like Moschino,  Sophia Webster  and Giuseppe Zanotti.

Combat Boots

Originally designed to be worn by soldiers on the battlefield, combat boots are utilitarian footwear created for foot protection, ankle support and with a gripping tread. Classically made of black leather, combat boots, particularly Dr. Martens, were adopted by counterculture movements in the '70s, '80s and '90s, including the goth, punk, grunge and heavy metal scenes. Dr. Martens and other style-forward combat boots remain a music festival fashion mainstay.

J Balvin Gets Abducted by Aliens, Doja Cat Gyrates in Mud at Coachella Day Three

Coachella 2024 was the year of the A-list guests. Across all three days, top stars made appearances either onstage or in the crowd to support their musician besties. Olivia Rodrigo joined No Doubt , Will Smith pulled up for J Balvin , Justin Bieber sang with Tems, Billie Eilish threw a last-minute party at the DoLab stage, and Shakira even announced a world tour during Bizarrap’s set.

The talk among some festivalgoers ahead of Coachella suggested that this year’s lineup might underwhelm, but the number of stars joining their friends onstage surely helped with that. Plus, the headlining sets from Doja Cat , Lana Del Rey, and Tyler, the Creator surely did not disappoint.

That’s a wrap on Weekend One! Here are some of the best things we saw at Coachella on Sunday, April 14.

Doja Cat’s post-apocalyptic performance

Doja also welcomed 21 Savage , who rapped opposite her in the 2024 track, “H. N. I. E.” Bashfully wielding a bouquet of baby’s breath, Teezo Touchdown joined Doja for a live debut of their song “Masc,” as featured in Scarlet 2 CLAUDE , the deluxe edition of Scarlet , which dropped last week. A$AP Rocky also emerged from backstage, raring to throw down to a metal version of their brand new song, “URRRGE!!!!!!!!!!”

Doja omitted her most poppy of songs from her setlist, including “Say So,” “Woman,” and “Kiss Me More,” her Grammy-winning pop number with SZA. As Los Angeles’ biggest female hip-hop star to date, Doja chose instead to flex her precision as an MC, spitting fire in each verse without missing a single beat. –S.E.

J Balvin ’s new beginning

Editor’s picks, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

J Balvin delivered one of the best-produced, most exciting sets of the weekend Sunday night, as he danced alongside aliens and brought out the alien exterminator himself — Will Smith, dressed in his Men in Black Agent J role, for a rendition of the film’s theme song. Jada Pinkett Smith (dressed in a large fur coat) and Katy Perry were among the stars who watched the E.T.-abduction-themed performance from the crowd.

Backed by dancers in Lady Gaga-esque, otherworldly outfits, Balvin jumped between recent hits such as “Colmillo” (as he welcomed Jowell and Randy) and the Usher-sampling “Dientes,” along with some of his older tracks like “Ginza” and “La Canción” that had the crowd jumping. It sure helped to have Tainy behind the turntables to keep the crowd going.

“Es una nueva temporada de J Balvin,” he teased onstage: “It’s a new season of J Balvin.”  –T.M.

Victoria Monét hosts a consciousness-raising burlesque revue

Billie eilish says 'ocean eyes' would 'not even exist without' lana del rey, travis kelce had 'so much fun' witnessing coachella 'madness' from the pit with taylor swift, lana del rey overcame laryngitis and a tour manager's abrupt exit before headlining coachella.

Things got progressively steamier with her second act, in which she stripped down to a set of lingerie and simulated sexy moves with her all-woman dance crew during “Friend U Can Keep.” She extolled the virtues of working out in her performance of “Ass Like That,” but made sure to affirm the body diversity of those cheering her on in the audience.

“Whether you get ass shots or it’s natural, it doesn’t matter,” said Monét. “If it’s real or fake, people will still wanna f—. You look good!”

She made another show of compassion in her performance of “Stop (Askin’ Me 4Shyt),” and becoming one of the few acts at Coachella to condemn attacks on civilians in Gaza, Sudan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. “Stop the wars, stop the hate, stop the genocide!” she proclaimed. “We need love. Stop thinking so small. We need to think big, bitch!”

With that point made, she added: “And stop asking for the ‘Alright’ music video, because it’s on the way.” Case closed! —S.E.

Reneé Rapp and Kesha say “fuck P Diddy ”

Two giant scissors and the cast of the L Word welcomed Reneé Rapp onto the Outdoor Stage Saturday afternoon. Need any more hints about her sexuality ?

The silly pop singer — dressed in a trench coat and black sports bra — sang fan favorites like “Colorado” and “Poison Poison.” Rapp knew her crowd well, and before “Willow,” she encouraged: “If you know this song and you know where the ass shake is at, you should do it.”  Then, she gave her set a complete turn, as she welcomed Kesha onstage for a fun rendition of her 2010 hit “Tik Tok” that included a  big “fuck you” to Diddy in the song’s opening line.

Later in the set, Rapp brought her girlfriend (and fab performer) Towa Bird for a rendition of “Tummy Hurts,” perfectly tying together the sapphic themes of her set to perfection. –T.M.

Carin León builds a bridge between Mexico and Nashville

While fans were treated to his greatest hits — among them the soulful “Primera Cita,” and “Que Vuelvas” with cumbia stars Grupo Frontera — León flaunted his Nashville bona fides by performing “The One (Pero No Como Yo),” a bilingual duet he recorded with country star Kane Brown. “Whatever you’re chasing better be a tequila double shot,” sang León in a rich, Southern drawl. “‘Cause you know I’m the one!”

Fans kicked up dust by dancing along to the brisk pace of “La Boda del Huitlacoche,” and León almost lost his cowboy hat to the wind. Flown in from Miami were Venezuelan hitmakers Mau y Ricky, who arrived sharply dressed to perform “Llorar y Llorar” — which was graced by the nostalgic country feel of a lap steel guitar. León pleased the crowd further with a bluesy version of “Te Quiero,” a song by rock en español legends Hombres G; he then knocked it out of the park with a brassy rendition of Selena’s “Si Una Vez.” León will represent Mexico once more at the upcoming Stagecoach Festival, also in Indio, taking place April 26-28 at the Empire Polo Club. —S.E.

Bebe is more than good: She’s the drama

Bebe Rexha ’s got hits. The songwriter-turned-pop-hitmaker packed her 45-minute set with some of the biggest songs of her career as she opened with G-Eazy’s “Me, Myself, and I” and “I Got You” and later played “Call You Mine” and “In the Name of Love,” two DJ collaborations from over the years.

“I started as a songwriter and I always thought I wasn’t cool enough for Coachella, but here I am now. I’m cool now, mothafuckers!” she told the crowd as they let out a roar and she teased her next song. “I guess it’s meant to be.”

Rexha even found room to preview three unreleased songs: the electric banger “I’m the Drama,” “Chase It” during a dance break, and later, “Beat It Up,” as she shook her ass on the floor alongside her dancers. “Did you like our little onstage orgy?” she joked.

Catch them while you can : FLO

FLO are sort of like the PowerPuff Girls, if the trio’s superpower was harmonizing gorgeously. The British R&B trio — Renée Downer, Jorja Douglas, and Stella Quaresma — proved to be one of the most exciting acts at Coachella all weekend, as they packed their 45-minute set with perfect choreo and stunning vocals.

The group performed songs such as “Summertime” and “Immature” (“We’re leaving immature men in the past. That ends today,” instructed Douglas) from their debut EP, The Lead , before summoning the energy of the Nineties with their Missy Elliott-sampling “Fly Girl.”

Come for the Torture, Stay for the Poetry: This Might Be Taylor Swift's Most Personal Album Yet

Taylor swift unveils double album ‘the tortured poets department: the anthology’, dickey betts, allman brothers band singer-guitarist, dead at 80, taylor swift busts out the quill pen and delivers an epic double album with 'ttpd: the anthology', lil yachty surprises fans with mac demarco cameo.

Atlanta’s Lil Yachty captained an eclectic set on Sunday evening inside the Mojave tent. Standing at the helm of his own makeshift ship, bearing his nickname “Lil Boat,” Yachty mostly performed songs from his latest record, 2023’s Let’s Start Here . An experimental foray into the realm of psych-rock, with assists from members of Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Chairlift, and MGMT, it’s an album almost made for Coachella.

Onstage, Yachty broke the hypnagogic spell he’d cast on his fans, who responded with hair-raising shrieks as he called indie superstar Mac DeMarco to the stage. “Sing with Daddy,” DeMarco said to the audience, before joining Yachty in serenading fans with his own songs “On the Level” and “Chamber of Reflection.” Yachty sailed effortlessly into previous trap numbers like “Flex Up” and “Minnesota” — but his rousing performance of his art-rock song, “I’ve Officially Lost Vision!!!!” was transcendent. —S.E.

Bebe Rexha performs on the Coachella stage during the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, on April 14, 2024.

Who wants a Sunday surprise?

Day 3 of Coachella 2024 was all about the surprise guest. Honestly, an entirely new, parallel Coachella lineup could be constructed out of the unannounced artists who popped up on stages across the Empire Polo Club grounds on Sunday (April 15).

5 Best Moments From Doja Cat's Proudly Strange Coachella 2024 Headlining Set

The night’s headliner alone brought out three guests, with Doja Cat enlisting A$AP Rocky, 21 Savage and Teezo Touchdown for her festival-wrapping set. Then we had Reneé Rapp inviting Kesha to duet on “Tik Tok”; Tems drawing both Wizkid and Justin Bieber out for their “Essence” remix; and J Balvin getting Will Smith back in his Men in Black suit for an otherworldly cameo (more on all three of those major moments below).

In her debut at the festival, Bebe Rexha invited Coachella vet David Guetta to join her for their dance smash “I’m Good (Blue),” DJ Snake invited out both Robin S. and Peso Pluma, and Lil Yachty called on Mac DeMarco (oh, we’ve got all those covered below too).

A few other special guests from Sunday: YG Marley brought out his mother, Lauryn Hill, to perform a series of solo and Fugees hits with her, and they teamed up on a couple of songs by his late grandfather, Bob Marley, as well. (Oh yeah, and Busta Rhymes popped up with YG too, for “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See” and his feature on Chris Brown’s “Look at Me Now.”) And if that isn’t enough, Katy Perry was there too! She joined her best friend Mia Moretti for her DJ set on the DoLab Stage.

So much happened beyond all those well-planned surprises though. Below, find Billboard ‘s best moments from the third and final day of Coachella 2024 weekend one.

Bebe Rexha Gets Her Coachella Moment

“I always thought I wasn’t cool enough for Coachella,” Bebe Rexha told the crowd in the middle of her debut performance at the festival. But whatever she may have thought, her evening mainstage show proved that she deserved to be there as much as anyone else, with Rexha — who wore a tight black bodsuit and boots — sounding and looking like every bit the big stage pop star.

The setlist included her 2019 Chainsmokers collab “Call You Mine” and her 2017 Florida Georgia Line hit “Meant to Be,” and the show found Rexha dancing hard and in one moment grinding on the floor in a sequence she herself referred to as an “onstage orgy.” But for all the sex appeal, there was also a level of heart-on-her sleeve authenticity, as Rexha told stories about continuing on after getting dropped from her label (“I said, ‘You know what? F— this. I’m going to write the songs, and when I sell the songs I’m going to say, “You’ve gotta keep me on it”‘”) and dealing with haters by understanding that hate “is just confused love.” (It was also endearing when, after gazing deeply into the camera, she then cracked a wide smile and stuck out her tongue.) Rexha closed the show by bringing out David Guetta to perform the pair’s massive 2023 dance hit “I’m Good (Blue),” closing the show by turning it into a full-on EDM dance party that, based on all the cheering and dancing, everyone seemed to think was indeed pretty cool. — Katie Bain

Tems Brings Out Justin Bieber & Wizkid for ‘Essence’ Surprise

Tems had a striking debut Coachella set in the Mojave tent, backed by a gorgeous outdoor setting on the stage that perfectly matched her warm, powerful voice. She live-debuted an unreleased song from her upcoming debut album, teaching the audience the “love me jeje, love me tender” chorus so they could sing along like it was already a hit. And then she treated the crowd to “Essence,” with Wizkid joining her onstage to perform the 2021 Hot 100 top 10 smash. But that was only the beginning of the surprise: Their remix collaborator Justin Bieber then popped onstage as well and completely shattered the decibel levels in the tent. Tems tried to prepare us when she tweeted earlier in the day: “Coachella! I’m too exciteddd I have a surprise tonight.” — Katie Atkinson

J Balvin Brings Out a Man in Black

Will Smith and J Balvin perform at the Coachella Stage during the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at Empire Polo Club on April 14, 2024 in Indio, California.

J Balvin ‘s heavy use of sci-fi imagery during his performance on the main stage — including two massive flying saucers and an animatronic Grey Alien head that swiveled eerily back and forth in the center of the stage — proved the perfect setup for the night’s big special guest: Will Smith , who hit the stage for a brief rendition of “Men in Black” (in full suit-and-sunglasses regalia from the film) as Balvin bounced and slid and made his neck work in choreographed tandem with the Oscar-winning movie star. Elsewhere during his set, the Colombian superstar gamely performed such hits as “Mi Gente,” “Con Altura,” “Ginza” and his Cardi B collab “I Like It Like That” — joined throughout by collaborators Jowell & Randy and De La Ghetto . — Chris Eggertsen

Reneé Rapp Duets With Kesha on ‘Tik Tok’

Reneé Rapp drew a huge, enthusiastic crowd to the Outdoor Stage on Sunday for her debut Coachella set (or “baby’s first ‘Chella,” as she called it), and it all kicked off with an intro from The L Word stars Jennifer Beals, Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig and creator Ilene Chaiken. “You’ve gotta say what every lesbian wants to hear,” Moennig said, before yelling to wild cheers: “Who’s ready for a f—ing Reneé Rapp concert?” Rapp kicked off the 14-song set with the Snow Angel single “Talk Too Much” and wrapped with the title track from her 2023 debut album. While she went it alone for the bulk of the set, she did have two special guests: her girlfriend Towa Bird, who played guitar on “Tummy Hurts,” and a surprise appearance from Kesha to duet on her 2009 Hot 100 nine-week No. 1 “Tik Tok.” In response to a series of sexual misconduct allegations against Diddy , the pair did a little surgery on the song’s opening line, changing it to: “Wake up in the morning like ‘F— P. Diddy.’” — K.A.

DJ Snake Shows Us Love

“Are you ready for this iconic f—ing moment?” DJ Snake asked the Sahara Tent crowd about 15 minutes into his set, then hitting play on “Show Me Love” and welcoming the song’s power-lunged vocalist, Robin S., onto the stage. As it turned out, we were all definitely ready, with the crowd dancing and singing along at full volume. The French producer then kept the show going with some very grimy bass and equally aggressive sounds before bringing out Peso Plumo to debut on the pair’s forthcoming “Teka,” a woozy, infectious dance track. — K.B

The Rose Recall Their Much Tinier Early Crowds

Kim Woo-sung of The Rose performs at the Outdoor Stage during the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at Empire Polo Club on April 14, 2024 in Indio, California.

Another first-time Coachella performer was four-piece South Korean pop-rock group The Rose, who marveled at the size of the crowd they drew to the Outdoor Stage by recalling their early days as a band. “We have been together as The Rose for seven years now,” Woosung said. “When we first started, we started in a very small place in Seoul called Hongdae. That’s where we used to busk and street-perform and do little club gigs here and there. And our very first show as The Rose, we had about 20 people show up, and half of them were our friends. But look at all you motherf—ers now!” The size of the crowd was especially clear when they performed “Back to Me,” a top 10 hit on Billboard ’s Alternative Digital Song Sales chart last year. As the lyrics to the catchy chorus scrolled across the screen, the crowd took over, shouting every word. — K.A.

Victoria Monet Encourages Fans to Exercise Their Right to Smoke

Just before Monet busted out a performance of the JAGUAR II track “Smoke” during her solid, sex-positive set in the Mojave tent, the red-lingerie-clad rising star — who also performed renditions of songs such as “Jaguar,” “Moment,” “Coastin'” and “Ass Like That” — coaxed the crowd to “hotbox” the performance space, in her words, “’cause it’s legal.” A considerable number of Monet’s fans apparently didn’t need to be told twice, as within seconds, pot smoke emanated from various sections of the audience before coalescing into a massive single cloud that hovered above the crowd. Let’s just say that by the time Monet launched into her breakthrough hit “On My Mama” at the end of the set, the Mojave tent was vibing . But in truth, no cannabis was needed; Monet had the crowd entranced from the get-go. — Chris Eggertsen

Jhene Aiko Gets Real

Jhene Aiko put on a dreamy, self-assured show at the outdoor stage on Saturday evening — think crystals, sound baths and even a brief pseudo-guided meditation from the singer herself. Like her music, the performance felt grounded and ethereal all at once, with Aiko seemingly floating across the stage in a multi-layered, snakeskin-like dress while delivering effortless performances of songs like “While We’re Young,” “Sativa” and “The Worst.” Just like Aiko’s set on Saturday, her songs tend to spin a gossamer mood while also delivering lyrical truth bombs (“Please don’t take this personal/But you ain’t s—/And you weren’t special/’Til I made you so”).

Though she hosted such impressive special guests as Big Sean , Tyga , Saweetie (“My Type”) and Omarion during the roughly hour and 15-minute set, it was Aiko’s emotional speech near the end of the performance that proved to be the most memorable part of the show. Reflecting on her debut performance at Coachella in 2014, the singer got real (and occasionally choked up) when she related that at the time, “I had a lot going on, my brother had passed two years before, my daughter was five — and I’m not gonna lie, I was high and drunk out of my mind, I was like blackout high and drunk. I had a good time, but it was probably not my best moment.”

She continued, “I just want to thank god for giving me a second chance to come back tonight and give you guys a sober performance. I hope it’s a little better than 10 years ago. I’ve learned a lot since then. I’ve realized that you have to allow yourself to feel your emotions in order to heal. I’ve also learned that your reality is your choice. Everything that we see in our waking life is just a projection of our state of mind and what we imagine, what we think. I’ve learned that everyone is going through something and is just another version of me. We are all each other’s reflection.”

It was a moment of emotional honesty rare for a festival set, and the tears they did flow — both from Aiko and her fans, many of whom clearly felt the weight of her words. – Chris Eggertsen

All Aboard for the Lil Yachty Set

Lil Yachty performs at the Mojave Tent during the 2024 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival at Empire Polo Club on April 14, 2024 in Indio, California.

Leave it to Lil Yachty to bring a not-so-lil boat to Coachella. When the rapper hit the Mojave Tent late Sunday night, his stage had a massive red boat as its centerpiece, with his nickname “Lil Boat” written on the side. He even played the first few songs perched on the boat’s bow, which made for some very cool big-screen shots when he was filmed from behind and the sea of fans in front of him looked like a literal body of water. During the 20-song set — which toggled between the experimental sound of his most recent album, last year’s Let’s Start Here , and his more straightforward hip-hop work — Yachty brought out his Concrete Boys collective to join him aboard the Lil Boat, as well as Justine Skye and Mac DeMarco. — K.A.

Jackson Wang & BIBI’s Surprise New Song During 88Rising Set

The lineup for the 88Rising Futures showcase in the Mojave Tent was already stacked going into Day 3, including Japan’s YOASOBI and Atarashii Gakko! (both of whom also had their own solo sets this weekend) and Korea’s Tiger JK and Yoonmirae. But the music and media company found room for a few surprises too, with 88rising artists Jackson Wang and BIBI showing up unannounced to perform the romantic unreleased duet “Feeling Lucky.” The pair had palpable chemistry as they held hands and got closer and closer toward the end of the song. Wang also came out for the Coachella debut of Japanese boy band Number_i to perform their song “GOAT.” – K.A.

Carin Leon Honors a Late Legend & Spotlights a Contemporary

Near the end of his 50-minute set, the Mexican singer-songwriter, performing at Coachella for the first time, broke out a cover of Selena Quintanilla ‘s “Si Una Vez” in honor of the late singer, who helped set the template for Latin acts in the 21st century. At another point during the set, he brought out Venezuelan Latin pop brother duo (and fellow Coachella newbies) Mau y Ricky for a performance of the song “Llorar y Llorar” — effectively sharing his moment in the spotlight with both a contemporary and a predecessor who arguably helped set the groundwork for Leon’s moment to happen in the first place. – Chris Eggertsen

Doja Cat Keeps It Weird

With her main-stage performance (which made Doja Cat the second Black woman to ever headline Coachella), the rapper squashed debate about whether she was a big enough star to headline the fest — not by pandering to its audience, but just by embracing her signature strangeness. Think playful wigs, a mud pit, a fake Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton, dancing yetis and other elements presented with total dedication to the bit.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

bebe rexha tour merch 2023

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
