The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

We tested the best minimalist wallets on the market to help you step up your everyday carry game in comfort and style.

Tanner Goods Minimalist Wallet

Here’s a hard truth: We don’t see baggy jeans coming back any time soon.  And these fitted pants we’re wearing now just don’t have room for the bulky wallets that we grew up with. Slim and sleek, minimalist wallets are a great solution to this issue.

A slim wallet forces you to decide what you really need and what you can leave at home. Minimalist wallets pare things down to the basic necessities. Most can hold three to five credit cards, your ID, and some cash. Despite this simplicity, companies have found ways to make their slim wallets stand above the crowd. Features like tough materials, stylish design, and RFID blocking helped us identify the following standouts.

Our resident wallet enthusiast and tester extraordinaire is Billy Brown, a frequent contributor to GearJunkie in the EDC and fitness realms. After researching the best minimalist wallets available, Billy used each model as one would, stuffing them full of credit cards and cash and going about daily life. As an essential item that gets used almost every day, wallet selection has a surprisingly big impact

After a few months, Billy and the testing crew were able to make solid assessments about the durability and convenience of each wallet.

The list below represents our favorites in terms of features, style, and durability. We’ll keep updating it as we continue to test new products. For a comprehensive introduction to minimalist wallets, check out the Buyer’s Guide section of this article, as well as our comparison chart and FAQ section.

Editor’s Note: We refreshed this Buyer’s Guide on April 8, 2024, adding the Chums Bandit Bi-Fold Wallet to our testing lineup.

  • Best Overall Minimalist Wallet: The Ridge Wallet
  • Best Budget Minimalist Wallet: Buffway Slim Wallet
  • Best Leather Minimalist Wallet: Tanner Goods Journeyman Wallet
  • Best Storage in a Minimalist Wallet: RUNBOX Slim Wallet
  • Most Simple Metal Minimalist Wallet: The Groove Life Groove Wallet

The Ridge Wallet

  • Material Anodized aluminum
  • Capacity 5 cards plus cash
  • Weight 2.0 oz.

Product Badge

  • Room for 5 cards
  • Effective RFID blocking
  • Keeping your keys in the same pocket will scratch the surface

For everything you need and nothing you don’t, the Ridge Wallet ($95) is the perfect choice. Anodized plates form the body and hold the device together. This basically makes the whole setup drop-proof.

It holds up to five cards and sports an expandible tray for easy access. RFID blocking keeps your accounts safe, and a burly money clip keeps your cash organized.

We love the Ridge Wallet for its sleek design and ease of use. It’s clean, practical, and practically bombproof. It’s one of the pricier items on this list, but you definitely get what you pay for.

The only real ding we’ve found is that keys can scratch the metal surface if you keep them in the same pocket. If you’re not into the well-used look, keep your keys and wallet separate.

Buffway Slim Wallet

  • Material Leather
  • Capacity 8 cards (including ID) plus cash
  • Weight 1.1 oz.

The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

  • Room for 8 cards
  • Overstuffing card slots can stretch them out
  • Allows cards to fall out when they’re not crammed in

Buffway’s Slim Wallet ($20) comes in a variety of styles, and at an undeniable price that easily lands it our Best Budget award. The leather outer sports a variety of textures including suede, cross-patterned, and carbon fiber-style texturing. The cards are easily accessible, thanks to the finger hole. This lets you push your card up from the bottom rather than pulling it up from the top.

You can carry seven cards plus an ID card, and any cash you have can fold into the main body. The RFID blocking keeps your accounts from getting hacked, and the profile is slim and flat.

As a bonus, Buffway offers a no-questions-asked warranty for the first year on the Slim Wallet . This is great if you stretch out the cardholders or if you habitually lose your wallet.

Tanner Goods Journeyman Wallet

  • Capacity 5 cards plus a small amount of cash
  • Weight 1.0 oz.

The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

  • Evolving look
  • Hard to access bills in the center pocket

While it’s on the pricier end, the Journeyman Wallet ($85) from Tanner Goods is a master class in quality. It’s made from vegetable-tanned Meridian English bridle leather, a leather known for its distinct patina.

Over time, the leather’s color changes as the wallet breaks in. What you’re left with is a wallet that not only stands up to the test of time but also looks better as it ages.

One of our staff bought a Journeyman 7 years ago. Over that time, the exterior color deepened to a rich, deep brown while the interior kept the original tan color. It has the look and feel of a well-broken-in baseball mitt.

The durability has held up as well. The wallet is still firm with zero fraying on any of the seams. Some scratching has developed over the years, but the stitching is still as bright as it was on the day of purchase. The only issue that we’ve found is that the center pocket for cash is a bit tight.

RUNBOX Slim Wallet

  • Capacity 10 cards and plenty of cash
  • Weight Unavailable

The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

  • Stores 10 cards
  • RFID blocking
  • Space for 20 bills
  • Easy access to cash
  • Bigger than most slim wallets

A touch thicker than some wallets on this list, the  RUNBOX Slim Wallet  ($25) is a great choice for people who don’t want to give up the bi-fold feel.

This wallet can hold up to 10 cards and up to 20 bills. This is due to the metal ring on the interior, which holds the cash between the wallet halves. This feature also makes cash much easier to access than non-folding wallets. You can also carry receipts and notes in the ring.

If you’re looking for a minimalist wallet that you can use more like a regular wallet, the Slim Wallet from RUNBOX is the one. It’s also a great transitional wallet for people who want to lose bulk but still want to carry as much as possible.

Groove Life Groove Wallet

  • Capacity 6 cards plus cash with an additional elastic band
  • Weight 2.7 oz.

The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

  • Cool mechanism for accessing cards

The Groove Wallet ($90) is about as simple as it gets in terms of aesthetics. A credit card-shaped rectangle of aluminum keeps your cards secure, while an optional elastic band holds your cash. The wallet is exceptionally thin and despite its rigidness, our tester hardly noticed it in his back pocket during a 14-hour drive from Colorado to California.

While minimalist is a fair description, the Groove Wallet is by no means simple and has a few clever features that distinguish it from the pack. A cool mechanism pushes your cards out an opening at one end of the wallet for easy identification when you press and slide your thumb up the front. The mechanism is spring-loaded, automatically retracting your cards when you let go. Additionally, it’s RFID secure.

In the field, we found the wallet does its primary job well, keeping our cards in place after multiple drops on the pavement and one unplanned spill onto a movie theatre floor. We were a little polarized on the monolithic aluminum look of this wallet and many of us are attached to the traditional styling of a leather wallet.

While this is one of the more expensive wallets on our list, we believe its quality construction, simple locking mechanism, and 94-year warranty make it a worthy choice for anyone wanting to slim down their wallet game in style.

Chums Bandit Bi-Fold Wallet

  • Material Nylon
  • Capacity 5 cards (including ID) plus cash
  • RFID Yes, with included card

The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

  • Very slim and lightweight
  • Separate ID window
  • Magnetic closure helps keep contents secure
  • Affordable price
  • Only fits 4 cards plus ID
  • RFID blocking card takes up a card slot
  • Nylon doesn't feel as sturdy as other materials

The Chums Bandit ($17) is a lightweight nylon wallet with a simple design that fits comfortably in your front or back pocket. The bi-fold design includes a magnetic closure strap, four internal card slots, an external ID window, and an external elastic cash band.

The Bandit comes in a variety of colors and designs and has a decidedly sporty look and feel. It has been our go-to companion in our backpack or ski jacket on days where we’re constantly on the move. It perfectly fits the essentials — ID, Credit Card, Medical Insurance Card, and a $20 bill — without being too bulky or cumbersome.

While we appreciate the simplicity and affordability of the Bandit, there are a few small drawbacks compared to other wallets. First, there is no built-in RFID blocking. It does come with an RFID-blocking mock ID card, but that will occupy one of the few cards slots in order to use it.

And second, the nylon material is a bit thinner and has a slicker texture than other materials, which makes it feel a little less sturdy and can make it a little tedious to slide the cards in and out of their slots.

Overall, the Chums Bandit is an affordable, sporty wallet that we love to use while we’re on the move in the outdoors, but isn’t our top choice for a regular everyday carry wallet.

Trayvax Original 2.0 Wallet

  • Capacty 15 cards and five bills
  • Weight 2.4 oz.

The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

  • Stores large number of cards
  • Integrated pry bar
  • Sharp edges wear out pant pockets
  • Takes a little longer to access cards

Just about as simple as it comes, the Trayvax Original 2.0 Wallet ($52) looks more survival tool than wallet. Designed for use as an everyday carry, this card carrier bumps up the security and keeps your valuables where they belong.

The paracord security clasp prevents your cards from sliding out. The metal exterior is solid and sturdy, so dropping it won’t be an issue at all. We love this wallet for its sleek and simple design, as well as its ability to hold up to 15 cards at once. There’s even a slick pry bar integrated into the frame of the Original 2.0 — very nice.

There’s no separation inside the case, so you’ll have to take the cards out and rifle a bit to find the one you’re looking for. And if you tend to carry cash, you’re going to sacrifice some card space.

Magpul DAKA Everyday Folding Wallet

  • Material Blend
  • Capacity Seven cards including photo ID sleeve

The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

  • Easy to display photo ID
  • No RFID blocking

One of our favorite slim wallets in terms of style, the Magpul DAKA ($23) is a great showcase of simplicity in engineering.

This extremely minimal wallet can hold seven cards and features a card slot with a transparent protective window that is perfect for a photo ID. This feature allows you to easily display your ID without removing it from its sleeve, which is ideal for military personnel and others who regularly show identification.

Additionally, the Magpul DAKA is extremely durable and secure. Yards are inserted from the center seam and simply cannot fall out once the wallet is folded and closed.

The price is more approachable than many you’ll see on this list, making this a great choice for those looking to try out their first minimalist wallet. Though this wallet does not boast premium materials or RFID protection, it’s a well-made piece of EDC that draws its value from its simplicity.

Fossil Magnetic Card Case Wallet

  • Capacity Three cards plus cash

The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

  • Magnetic money clip
  • Minimal card slots

Fossil has an eye for great design, and its Magnetic Card Case Wallet ($50) is a great example. This slim wallet can hold three cards on one side and a magnetic money clip on the other side. The leather comes in four styles (polished or unpolished black or brown), and it blocks RFID signals.

The two slots can hold two cards plus an ID, maybe three cards if you cram them in there. However, that brings up the danger of stretching the card slots out. If the card slots stretch out, your cards may slide out if the slots aren’t fully loaded.

The magnetic clip can hold around 10 bills, but the magnets won’t hold if you carry much more than that. This Fossil Wallet is a great choice if you only carry a few cards. If you’re looking to carry more, read on.

Herschel Charlie RFID Case

  • Material Polyester
  • Capacity Four cards plus cash

The Best Minimalist Wallets of 2024

  • Hard to access cards and bills

For a bit of style on a budget, the Charlie RFID ($11-18) case from Herschel is a solid choice. The polyester wallet comes in a variety of colors (we’re partial to Night Camo).

It has four card slots and bill storage in the interior. It’s a bit tight — the cards and bills can be difficult to retrieve, especially before you wear it in a bit. But the RFID blocking is a huge plus in our book. Also, the four card slots can hold six to eight cards, which is great if you want to keep your punch cards handy for that free sandwich.

The polyester on the Charlie can start to fray over time, but at this price, you can always snag a new one.

How We Tested Minimalist Wallets

In order to find the best minimalist wallet out there, we pared down our back pockets to the bare essentials and set off to test the best ways to carry a fistful of cards and cash. During testing, we paid close attention to the overall capacity, protection, durability, as well as carrying comfort of each wallet in order to stack them up against each other.

Author Billy Brown has been testing EDC essentials for well over a decade. As a frequent traveler, father, and generally busy guy, Billy aims to streamline his go-everywhere possessions as much as possible.

While testing wallets for this guide, Billy rotated through each model with a quiver of cards and a wad of cash, swiping his way through credit card transactions and occasionally identifying himself. Each wallet spent plenty of time in his back pocket, and while a softer, leather wallet is marginally more comfortable, he was happy to find that some rigid metal wallets feel just fine during long periods of sitting.

Since minimalist wallets can be a bit of a race to the bottom, we attempted to assemble a broad spread of the available market — from the super minimal to the still-featured-but-elegant. We found that the ideal wallet lands somewhere in the middle, with organization being a big consideration in our final line-up.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Minimalist Wallet

Analyze how much you can carry.

Every wallet will be different. Some have more card slots, some have more space for cash, and some will have clips. The key here is to find out what you absolutely need to carry with you.

The first thing most people need is a driver’s license. After that, a debit card and a credit card are both good ideas. After that, some cash might be handy, so bring along a few 20s just to be safe. Because most slim men’s wallets have at least four card slots, that leaves you one free.

Some of our testers tend to use their final card slot as an interchangeable storage space. If you’re going to Costco, bring your membership card. Target, your Target credit card. Use that utility pocket however you like. This should keep you ready for any contingency.

Part of figuring out what you need is deciding what you don’t need. Yes, you’ll have to go all Marie Kondo here. Be ruthless with what you choose to discard. You will likely always need the big three: a driver’s license or ID, a credit card, and a debit card.

If you carry cash, you’ll need room for a few bills. For most people, three card slots are plenty and leave room for the occasional key card for people who have to pass security clearances. Everything else you keep in a big, bulky wallet is nonessential.

Pictures? They’re all on your phone. Receipts? Leave them at home until you actually need them. Those punch cards that’ll get you a free burrito after your eighth purchase? Stash them in your center console. Business cards? They’ll be safer in a business card case.

That should take care of all the unnecessary things you keep in your wallet. The remainder should fit just fine in a slim wallet, and ride along in a pocket just dandy with your favorite knife or everyday carry kit .

If you absolutely need to have more than four to six cards in your wallet, you can opt for a bi-fold mini wallet like the RUNBOX Slim Wallet . These give you more storage in a package that is still compact.

Leather vs. Metal

Both leather and metal have different perks. Leather wallets feel better in hand and don’t have any corners that can wear away at your pants over time. Metal is tops in terms of durability as long as the wallet is built well.

A lot of this comes down to style preference. People who prefer a modern, sleek look will likely gravitate more toward the look of the Ridge Wallet or the Groove Life Groove Wallet . These cases are generally bombproof, too.

One issue with metal wallets is that they can bend or scratch easily. If you want that sleek look to last, you’re going to have to take care of it. That means keeping it away from keys or other objects that might scratch it.

best minimalist travel wallet

On the other hand, a well-made wallet crafted from high-quality leather is ideal for people who want a more classic look. With the right leather and construction, leather wallets can last for decades.

Leather wallets are also dynamic in their appearance and feel. The material grows softer and more supple over time, and any scratches or wear marks give the wallet more character.

If you’re considering a leather wallet, try to find one with a good vegetable dye and opt for a lighter color. The leather will darken over time as it is exposed to the elements and the oils on your skin. The result is an antique-looking patina that constantly changes and develops over time.

RFID Explained

RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification . If your card is equipped with RFID, you can use it to tap or wave your card near a reader to make a purchase. This allows you to make transactions in seconds.

An RFID card never has to leave your hand, so there’s no chance of you forgetting your card in the reader. If you’re not sure whether or not your card is RFID-enabled, look for a symbol that resembles a Wi-Fi symbol turned on its side.

As RFID technology becomes more prevalent, a trip to the grocery without waiting in a checkout line may be a reality. Semi-passive chips can be placed on anything to track inventory, associate the items in your cart with your card, and charge you before you walk out the door. While this technology has huge potential for streamlining shopping, it also raises some big privacy and security concerns.

This convenience also makes it possible for a thief to find a way to skim your card with a portable scanner. Currently, many factors make this difficult for potential thieves. These include the necessary closeness and barriers between the card and the reader like a wallet with cash and other cards inside.

While the odds of your cards getting skimmed are unlikely, many wallets offer RFID blocking to completely eliminate any chances of this happening. This is mostly achieved by using materials that block or damp the signal put out from RFID-equipped cards.

When your card is in the wallet, the material blocks the signal. When you take it out to use it, the signal is unfettered.

best minimalist travel wallet

You can find leather minimalist wallets ranging from $15 to $85. The key difference here is going to be in the build of the wallet and the quality of the leather.

The $15 wallet will likely use a lower-grade leather that will degrade over time. A good $85 wallet will use a higher-end leather that will soften, but not weaken, over time. A well-made leather wallet will not only last longer than a poorly made one with inferior leather, but it will also look better as it ages.

The same is true for other styles. Generally, you pay more for better build quality. That said, there are plenty of cheaper options out there.

In addition to quality, another factor in cost is additional features. A higher-end wallet like the anodized aluminum Ridge Wallet boasts a money clip, RFID blocking, and an expandable tray for easy card access.

The plus side of less expensive wallets is that if you lose or damage them, you can replace them without taking a big hit to your bank account. If you’re just looking for a wallet and don’t want to spend much, a $20 wallet will work. Just don’t expect to get more than a few years of use out of it.

Another reason to get a wallet on the cheaper end is to see if you even like slim wallets. There’s no sense in spending 60 bucks on a slim wallet if there’s a chance it’ll be too small for you. If you’re just trying out your first minimalist wallet, get an inexpensive one as a test run.

If less bulk in your pockets is a priority, minimalist wallets are excellent. They’ll fit in any pocket without unsightly bulges, and they force you to carry only what is absolutely necessary. The fact that they are small in size doesn’t mean they are small in features, either.

Depending on the variety, these wallets can carry eight to 10 cards and a good amount of cash. Plus, they can offer RFID-blocking materials. They come in a wide range of materials and designs, with styles available to suit just about every taste. If you’re looking to pare down your everyday carry setup, a minimalist wallet is a necessity.

RFID wallets do not ruin credit cards. RFID wallets are made with materials that block the RFID signal from credit and debit cards. The card still puts out the signal, but the wallet’s materials prevent the signal from leaving your pocket. This makes it more difficult for anyone to skim the card’s information when it is inside the wallet.

Because the wallet’s RFID-blocking technology doesn’t actually affect the card’s ability to put out an RFID signal, it has no impact on the card at all. If you take the card out of the wallet, it will still put out a readable signal.

Traditionally, the thinnest types of wallets are minimalist front-pocket wallets. These wallets usually consist of a pouch with several card slots and either a small space for bills or an attached money clip.

Two of the thinnest wallets we’ve seen are the ultraslim offerings from   European company DUN  and  American company SlimFold . Both are 5 mm thick, but they also have enough room for a few credit cards and some bills. At this point, it looks like 5 mm is the minimum for a wallet that has more functionality than a rubber band holding your stuff together.

Keep in mind that these measurements are for empty wallets. Any cards, bills, or coins will make the wallets thicker.

Every wallet and every pocket is different. With that said, most minimalist wallets are designed to fit comfortably in either your front or back pockets. While traditional bi-fold wallets are often too thick to slide into your front jeans pockets, the wallets on this list should not have that issue. If you have especially tight or thin pockets, we recommend a thin metal wallet such as the Ridge Wallet .

The Best Minimalist Wallets: 9 Slim Options That’ll Unstuff Your Pockets

Best Minimalist Wallets

Our evaluations and opinions are not influenced by our advertising relationships, but we may earn a commission from our partners’ links. This content is created independently from TIME’s editorial staff. Learn more about it.

Quality minimalist wallets perform the same tasks as their bulkier, traditional counterparts, but in a smaller, slimmer package, saving space, and looking great while doing it. Whether you’re looking to free up space in your pocket or simply want a wallet that looks modern without sacrificing practicality, there’s a minimalist wallet on the market that meets your needs. Sifting through all the options on the market can be overwhelming, but once you’ve figured out your specific needs, you can start narrowing down your options with ease.

How to choose the best minimalist wallet for you

Size and capacity .

Minimalist wallets and card holders have benefited from a recent influx of innovation due to their increasing popularity. As a result, you can find minimalist wallets that offer metal construction and are large enough to hold more than 10 cards, while maintaining their slim profile. Consider how much you currently carry in your wallet, and what you can get rid of: Once you’ve taken stock of your essential cards, look for minimalist wallets with one or two extra card slots so you have space to expand, but aren’t left with something bulky.

There has never been a greater variety of materials to choose from for men’s wallets, minimalist or otherwise. You can opt for a traditional leather or nylon wallet, or you can choose from newer styles that make use of metal, canvas or recycled materials such as repurposed ship sails. There are also a number of minimalist wallets that make use of multiple materials to enhance the aesthetic, function or both.

Leather and high quality metal wallets that contain titanium tend to be the most expensive options. That said, these materials often provide the best durability. If you’re an outdoors oriented person, or are in the market for something more tactical, you want to consider a wallet constructed from metal or synthetic materials, which are waterproof and rugged.

High quality wallets should last years, or even decades. The best manufacturers reinforce this idea with extended warranties that allow customers to buy with confidence. Make sure to look for high quality materials that will last a long time – titanium and aluminum, for example, are strong, lightweight, and far superior to their cheaper nickel alloy peers.

Although wallets seem simple on the outside, there’s a lot more than meets the eye for modern wallet security. First and foremost, keep an eye out for wallets with RFID signal blocking capabilities. These wallets will protect your credit cards and other personal information from being vulnerable to new and advanced types of wireless hacking. Another great security feature that’s becoming increasingly available on modern wallets is worldwide tracking capability. A number of high quality minimalist wallets on our list allow you to track your wallet (or whatever bag your wallet is in) if it gets lost or stolen, which is especially helpful for frequent travelers.

Don’t forget about physical security features, either. While they may look old fashioned, magnetic clasps and zippers prevent things from unintentionally falling out. If you carry coins or frequently take your wallet in and out of your pocket, features like this may be worth prioritizing over size.

Best cardslide minimalist wallet: ekster senate cardholder .

Ekster Senate Cardholder

The Ekster Senate Cardholder takes minimalist functionality to a new level with its push-button cardslide. One of the drawbacks of minimalist wallets, especially those made from metal, is that they can be so tight that it becomes difficult to actually access the cards you need. Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is a minimalist wallet .

Minimalist wallets are pared down versions of traditional bi-fold wallets that are designed for carrying your essential cards, and maybe a few bills. As the name implies, minimalist wallets are oriented towards slimming what’s in your pocket or backpack without sacrificing on essential functionality.

Are minimalist wallets good?

Depending on what you intend to use your minimalist wallet for, they can be just as good, if not better, than traditional wallets. Minimalist wallets are great for everyday use, like commuting or walking around your hometown, but you may want something larger when traveling to new places so you can carry more cards or accommodate different sized bills. At the end of the day, it comes down to what you want to use your wallet for.

How many cards can a minimalist wallet hold?

Minimalist wallets and card holders usually have space for 4-10 cards, depending on the size and design. Some minimalist wallets will also come with removable card additions or money clips, so keep an eye out for the different storage options available to you.

How much should I expect to pay for a minimalist wallet?

Expect to spend between $40-$120 for a high quality minimalist wallet. However, if you’re looking for something from a designer brand, expect to spend well over $300.

Are minimalist wallets more secure than traditional wallets?

Wallet security is determined by the physical design and the built-in safety features, such as RFID blocking and tracking capabilities. The aesthetic of the wallet, whether it be minimalist or traditional, shouldn’t have a large impact on the security of your wallet. However, be wary of wallets that adhere to the principle of minimalism to such an extent that they forgo basic features that keep your cards and bills in place, while the wallet is tucked away in your pocket or luggage.

Now, you  could spend a fat chunk of $$$ on the WRONG present for someone. Wrong size hiking boots, wrong fit backpack, wrong shape sleeping bag… As any adventurer will tell you, gear is a personal choice.

So give the adventurer in your life the gift of convenience: buy them an REI Co-op gift card!  REI is The Broke Backpacker’s retailer of choice for ALL things outdoors, and an REI gift card is the perfect present you can buy from them. And then you won’t have to keep the receipt. 😉

The best travel wallet for one person isn’t necessarily the best travel wallet for the next person in the queue. So which is the best travel wallet for you? Here are a few points to take note of when working out which of our top picks might be the best for you.

Most of the travel wallets in our review list are made from water-resistant synthetic materials, which are ideal for anyone worried about getting caught in the rain (or even ruined by a splash of spilt coffee). But we’ve also covered a few travel wallets made in faux or real leather, for that extra look of sophistication!

Do you want your travel wallet to contain RFID-protection ? Firstly, let’s explain exactly what RFID stands for: Radio-Frequency Identification Devices. Basically, the wallets that promise RFID-protection stop electronic pickpockets from stealing your data by scanning the data stored on credit cards, identity cards, and even in passports, which could then be used to spend, spend, spend, or even duplicate your identity. You have been warned!

Frequency of use

If you’re only going to use your travel wallet once or twice a year, you’re probably going to be looking for a travel wallet at the lower end of the price bracket. However, if you’re a regular traveler, you definitely do get what you pay for, so keep this in mind when working out how to choose the best travel wallet for you!

Still have some questions? No problem! We’ve listed and answered the most commonly asked questions below. Here’s what people usually want to know:

What makes a travel wallet so different?

Travel wallets need to be more durable and offer more organisation than normal wallets. In the best case, they’re also made from cut-proof material.

Are there wallets that fit passports?

Yes, the VULKIT Passport Holder Wallet fits all of your cards, money and even your passport. It’s obviously not the size that you can put into your pocket, but to keep all of your valuables together, it’s perfect.

What is the safest travel wallet?

The Pacsafe RFIDsafe V50 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet is a great anti-theft wallet. It is fully RFID-protected, meaning data thieves are unable to scan your credit card or ID details.

What is the overall best travel wallet?

Our favorite is the Pacsafe V50 RFID Blocking Bi-Fold Wallet . It offers plenty of compartments which makes organisation a breeze.

Best Minimalist Wallet for 2024

We tested more than a dozen of the most popular and interesting minimalist wallets on the market. Here's what we found.

Our Experts

best minimalist travel wallet

  • 6 years working professionally in the 3D printing space / 4 years testing consumer electronics for large websites.

CNET’s expert staff reviews and rates dozens of new products and services each month, building on more than a quarter century of expertise.

What to consider

Number of cards

The number of cards you need will determine the size and shape of your minimalist wallet.

  • RFID blocking

Are you worried about someone scanning your chip? RFID-blocking wallets are the answer.

Is cash needed?

Having a sturdy money clip or elastic band is important if you need cash.

Wallet material

If you have specific material requirements, then some wallets might not be available to you.

screen-shot-2020-09-28-at-3-08-10-pm.png

Minimalist wallets are lightweight, svelte containers designed to accommodate your most essential everyday carry items: some money, an ID card and a few credit or debit cards. The best minimalist wallets combine a stylish appearance, durable construction and -- most importantly -- a design that forces you to be economical in your choices about what to carry around. With that in mind, we've put together this list to help you find the best minimalist wallet.

Hands holding an overstuffed wallet

Massive wallets like George Costanza's are a thing of the past.

What's the best minimalist wallet?

For our money, the Airo Collective Stealth Wallet Razor is, despite that word salad of a name, the best minimalist wallet you can buy. It's minimal in all the right ways: minimal weight, minimal design and minimal intrusion into your pocket. The firm elastic cord and toughness of the material mean you won't lose your money accidentally either, so it's a win from every angle.

Though there are plenty of bifold and trifold thin wallet options, we're mostly focused on one-panel design wallets here. These usually hold between four and 10 credit and debit cards, though some do it more artfully than others, and there is a variety of fabrics and colors to choose from. Some are hybrids, which combine a wallet and money clip or elastic band. Most offer some RFID-blocking technology, which is advertised as a protective measure against electronic pickpocketing, like scammers skimming data stored on your contactless credit cards. (That may be  an overblown concern , however.)

Best minimalist wallet of 2024

  • Incredibly light
  • Made in the US
  • Bungee loop showing wear and tear

Best overall minimalist wallet

Airo collective stealth wallet razor.

After carrying a wide variety of minimalist wallets over the past several years, I have finally found one that I can recommend without reservation. The Airo Collective's Stealth is tasteful, thoughtfully designed and extraordinarily, singularly minimal, weighing a feathery 0.14 ounce. The billfold design features two pocket card slots, each holding up to four credit cards, and a thin elastic band -- Airo calls it a "ballistic bungee loop" -- that securely holds your cash in place.

The company says its material is 15 times stronger than steel, and the website features videos of musclebound dudes trying and failing to rip it apart. Also appealing: It's made in the US, comes with a two-year warranty and offers RFID protection, for whatever that's worth. After several months of use, I can report that it's broken in -- but still holding up well.

screen-shot-2020-09-28-at-3-08-10-pm.png

  • Made from titanium
  • Keeps your cards tight and safe
  • Adjustable design
  • Can be pricey for the best version

Best rugged minimalist wallet

Ridge titanium.

Of all of the rugged minimalist wallets I tested, I found the Ridge to be the most flexible -- ironic for a wallet made of titanium. But the sandwich design of the Ridge wallet securely accommodates one card as easily as it can 12, and the durable but pliable money clip holds one bill as tightly as a bigger wad. The cutout provides quick access to all of your cards, and the tough elastic strap that holds everything together inspires confidence.

This wallet is almost comically overdesigned, and you can use the included screwdriver (!) to disassemble the pieces, remove the money clip and bring the money strap to the exterior. Ridge makes this wallet in China, but backs it with a lifetime guarantee against manufacturing defects, which seems about right for the price. This burnt titanium Ridge wallet is probably my favorite color, though it's a little pricier than some of the other color variants, which start at $95. There are tons of different options to choose from over at the Ridge website  if you want something a little subtler, or a lot more boisterous.

Best minimalist wallet for under $15

Hammer anvil minimalist.

Five of the 12 wallets we tested had essentially the same basic design, and there are dozens -- if not hundreds -- of nearly identical models, all made in China, listed on Amazon. Prices start at just $7, for the Chelmon model, and other models generally cost between $13 and $20, though some colors, patterns and fabrics are more expensive than others. They're all about the size of a deck of playing cards, though they measure about 0.25 inch thick. The five we tested all have their brand names embossed on them:

Each of these slimmer wallets had the same basic elements: two or three card holder pockets on each side; a transparent window that lets you flash your ID without removing it; an inner space that can be used as a cash pocket or to stow a few more cards; RFID blocking on its card sleeve to block electronic pickpocketing of your credit and debit cards; and, in the case of the slightly pricier Zitahli, a magnetically attached money clip. (That company claims this money clip wallet can safely hold up to 25 bills, but when I put in just 10 folded bills, the magnets failed to connect.) But my top choice overall is the shorter, wider Hammer Anvil; I don't mind that it lacks the ID window, which, for all of its practicality, I find tacky and not befitting of our top wallets list.

I also really like the  , which has a slightly broader design that separates it from the cookie-cutter field. It has a terrific inner pocket -- which is closed on one side only, allowing you to open it up wide -- that comes together firmly with a satisfying magnetic snap.

Best US-made minimalist wallet

Groove life.

Employing "more than 200 people in Tennessee," Groove Life has created a precision-made wallet with a balanced weight that feels great in your pocket. Designed for five cards to fan easily, I found it could fit four credit cards and two insurance cards nicely, with an ID in the front leather sleeve.

The mechanism for releasing the cards is really nice, too. The entire front of the wallet slides up to help fan the cards out with a spring-loaded action that is satisfyingly mechanical. Like all metal wallets, the Groove wallet is RFID-blocking, so you can have some peace of mind on that score. It's rugged too, so dropping it doesn't pop your cards out -- at least it hasn't yet.

Best branded minimalist wallet

Ridge nfl wallet.

The Ridge wallets are fantastic, and while the titanium series can be a little pricey, these NFL-branded ones feel well-priced for what you get. The solid aluminum constructed feels good in your hand and the powder-coated surface adds to that premium feel. If you love your football team and you want a way to show it in a stylish and rugged way, go for an NFL Ridge.

You also get a spare elastic and a money clip in the presentation box, making it the perfect gift for the football fan in your life. If I had one complaint it would be the lack of dynamic artwork, but if all you want is to show your team colors and logo, they work for that.

Best magsafe minimalist wallet

Bluebonnet minimalist wallet range.

I always thought that having your wallet and phone together was risky. But honestly, I am far more likely to lose my wallet in a back pocket than I am to lose my phone in my hand. The Bluebonnet Magsafe wallet holds only one or two cards, but it sticks to the back of the iPhone so well you would think it was part of the case. The leather is premium, and the blue band that acts as a money clip is tight enough to use as a phone grip too.

Most extra features on a minimalist wallet

Dango t01 tactical wallet.

There's something odd about a minimalist RFID wallet that includes a paracord tensioner. And yet, we have the T01, which covers the basics and then some. It's extremely durable, handcrafted with "aerospace-grade" aluminum -- for those of you looking for a metal wallet -- in the US, and can hold 12 cards (at least) plus a wad of bills in the included silicone band. And the T01 comes with not only a built-in bottle opener, but  Dango's stainless-steel multitool accessory , which can be stowed in the wallet. (I can't recall even one moment during the past 25 years when I needed any of those tools while on the go.) The multitool pushes the wallet's total weight above 6 ounces, reduces the number of cards it can hold and won't be happily received when boarding an airplane. But still, it's a cool wallet for those who need tools on them at all times.

Other minimalist wallets we've tested

Not all of the minimalist wallets we've tested get to be called the best. Some of them are OK; some of them are really not OK. Here are some of the wallets that did OK at testing but didn't quite make the cut.

Discommon Wallet 3.0

I really like the aesthetic of the Discommon Wallet 3.0. The vacuum-formed shape and little hints of color look good and can hold six cards comfortably. It's also very well made and feels like it would stand the test of time.

What keeps it out of the top slot is the clamshell. No matter how hard I try, the wallet 3.0 doesn't stay closed enough to be entirely safe. I wish that there was a small magnet near the front to hold the edges closed so that it didn't open by itself.

3 leather wallets on a green background

Vaultskin Notting Hill

Vaultskin's tasteful Notting Hill wallet manages to cram a lot into a small package. The defining feature here is the zipper. For some, it will be a deal-breaker -- for its bulk, or whatever it connotes, style-wise -- while others will find the security of a zippered compartment appealing for containing their credit and debit cards and money. If you're pro-zipper, there's much to like. The exterior features three slots that can accommodate cards or money. A fourth hidden slot can store two or three more cards, which you can eject out the top using the genuine leather pull tab. The inside has two pouches, one of which snaps down, and a strap that can stow several more cards. There's also a small key hook. Though it says "London" on the packaging, this wallet is made in China.

zipper

Trayvax's Armored Summit Wallet

Trayvax's Armored Summit Wallet delivers an appealing combination of ruggedness and extra features at a reasonable price. It can hold up to seven cards and five bills, and like the Dango, it's built from sturdy materials -- steel and melonite, in this case -- in the US. Also like the Dango, it has an integrated bottle opener. Still, Trayvax's buckling strap is a deal killer for me. It's nylon, not elastic, and I found it quite difficult to adjust when I needed to remove a few cards or make more room for additional money.

trayvax

Thread Wallets Elastic

Thread Wallets' Elastic resembles a fancy Ace bandage or compression sleeve. It's made of a stretchy material, and can easily hold 10 cards and some money. It also has a small key ring. Though it's billed as specifically "for women" -- and it was my 10-year-old daughter's favorite of the bunch -- that seems a bit reductive. This would be an excellent wallet for anyone. The only drawback to this simple, stylish wallet is that the excess material on the interior bunches up into a lump, a minor but considerable design blemish.

Factors to consider when buying a minimalist wallet

There are many factors to consider when buying the right minimalist wallet. I've tried to boil it down to a few key ones, but remember -- we are all different, so your mileage may vary. The top things to consider are:

  • How many cards do you really need?
  • Are you worried about RFID blocking?
  • Are you taking cash with you?
  • What material do you want it to be made of?

The most important factor in this list is the first one and will often dictate what your minimalist wallet looks like. Do you only need 2 to 5 cards? then a no-folding wallet, or possibly a mechanical opening wallet could be a good choice. If you need more than that then a bi-fold or even tri-fold wallet may be your only option.

Most minimalist wallets these days come with RFID blocking as standard, so it's more than likely you will have that. Double-check on the listing to make sure if it's important to you, but know most do come with it. That's also true for some kind of money clip or elastic strap to hold a small amount of cash. If you are looking to take a large amount of paper money with you, a minimalist wallet may not be for you.

The size of the wallet will also dictate the materials used. A mechanical wallet will be made of a metal of some kind, while other minimalist wallets will be made of leather or a vegan leather substitute. Deciding on the material and the number of cards you want to carry will likely give you the best indication of the type of wallet you'll want to buy.

How we test minimalist wallets

Testing wallets is, as you might imagine, a fairly subjective process. These wallets come in many sizes, shapes, and materials so it's important to test them on those merits. Trying to jam 10 cards into a wallet designed to hold 3 is pointless, and not a true test.

All wallets are subjected to a vigorous shake test where we try to dislodge the cards from inside, and if they have a money clip/strap on the outside, I try to get that to fall out too. Then it's time for my least favorite test; sitting on the wallet in my back pocket for an entire workday. Mostly, I am making sure the wallet doesn't bend, or otherwise damage the cards inside, but I am also checking how uncomfortable it is to sit on for 8 hours a day.

Any of the wallets that claim to be RFID blockers are subjected to a test using an Android Pixel phone and an RFID card that has my Twitter link on it. If the card can be read through the wallet and my Twitter Bio opens on the phone, then the wallet fails the test. Finally, I spend a week using the wallet as my main card holder in the real world. There are very few tests better than that to give you a clear idea whether it is worth your money or not.

Minimalist wallets FAQ

Do minimalist wallets damage cards.

If you use a minimalist wallet correctly, it will keep your cards safe and sound. If you overstock it, then you run the risk of damaging your credit cards. Remember, the whole point of a minimalist wallet is to only take the few cards you need for the trip you are on. Most can hold five to 10 cards so keep that in mind when you choose your wallet.

What pocket should you hold your wallet?

Despite the traditional notions of holding your wallet in your back pocket, it probably shouldn't be there. Not only does it make it much easier for pickpockets, it makes it harder for you to get to it when you need it. If you've ever tried to get your wallet while at a drive-through you'll know what I mean. Having your wallet in your back pocket can also damage the cards inside. It has the full pressure of your body as well as the other cards and metal parts of the wallet pressing down on them.

We found travel wallets that are great for navigating old cities around the clock, and travel wallets that can handle all sorts of rugged adventures. We curated all our travel wallets with durability and design in mind, but we also considered features that make each wallet unique in and of its own. The one quality you'll find in each travel wallet? They all are sized to hold an American passport nice and snug. After all, it wouldn't be a travel wallet if it didn't hold your most important papers.

Pioneer's Passport Wallet is wonderfully simple in design and tough as nails thanks to its waterproof ripstop fabric construction. In fact, we found the waterproof ripstop fabric is great for handling humid environments, staying dry and and stiff, as opposed to getting all slimy and flimsy as other travel wallets can become in these climates. As far as stroage goes, it comes with a full length cash pocket, pockets to store up to 8 cards, and a 3D molded passport pocket designed to fit an American passport perfectly snug.

Due to this wallet's construction. look, and function, we found it to be our favorite pick when taking to warm weather vacation and cold weather trips. The material is simply just too good, and you never have to worry about any of the contents sliding out. Simply put, the Pioneer Passport Wallet is capable of all kinds of trips and adventures. This is a quality investment we'd recommend over and over again.

Bellroy makes several great travel wallets, but the wallet we found most like the wallet you probably already carry is the bifold Travel Wallet. It's got a fine all leather make and will hold a passport, cash, train tickets, and up to 10 cards. What's cool is the wallet comes with a micro pen that hangs inside the wallet's spine, which we found to be useful when wanting to write down recommendations of places to visit from friends and other travelers.

Looks can be deceiving due to the wallet's traditional bifold design. It measures 3.8-inches tall by 6-inches wide, so it is big. Overall we find it to be a great minimalist travel wallet with a classic style that blends in nicely in all environments.

This reasonably priced wallet from Fjallraven is made with a durable waxed waterproof canvas and a YKK zippered closure to protect all your documents and cards from the elements. Inside are 5 card pockets, 2 cash pockets, and 1 zippered coin pouch. Looking for the passport pocket? That would be behind the coin pouch—it's a nice and discrete design note, we know.

If you're looking for a rugged wallet with waterproofing and protection but don't want to pay over $100, this is a solid option. Fjallraven fans will see this wallet has the same quality construction like the brand's other gear, which is a great sign because the maker is one of the best valued outdoor brands out there.

The design of a good AirTag wallet is still being perfected, but that doesn't mean we don't like what's already on the market. If you're looking for a travel wallet you can store your AirTag in, this one from Lumberjack Plaid is our latest favorite.

It comes in a sleek and stylish leather (3 colors available) and features a passport pocket, a long pocket for tickets and cash, and 3 card slots. You get all this for $40, which is an excellent value for such a quality wallet. Just be aware the leather can show scratches pretty easily; most notably on the dark leather.

Made to fall in line with all your other Tumi luggage, the Passport Case comes in a sleek, all-black look with more interior space than one might think. We're talking a passport pocket, a billfold compartment, an ID window, 2 slip pockets, and 8 card pockets. You get the best of both worlds with this wallet: great style and high functionality. Well done Tumi, well done.

We get it, many of us aren't jet-setting out of the U.S. several times in a year. Nonetheless it's important to have a passport wallet even if you're only getting out of the country once in a blue moon. For overseas trips that are few and far between, this RFID-blocking leather travel passport case for under $30 on Amazon will do the job. It will also give off style points, as the leather has a nice rich look to it that holds up well when used sparingly.

Due to the stitching and overall quality of the materials we'd say this wallet might not be suitable for high levels of use. But because it carries a high durability and functionality for the price, we recommend it as a great travel wallet for those who might need to take a passport with them only once or twice in a year.

If you want to go with a more secure wallet, this thin travel pouch can be strapped around the waist and hold your passport, cash, cards, and more. The pouch itself has RFID tech built-in so you get another level of safety. Plus the pouch is made from water-resistant ripstop, so you won't have to worry about any of your items getting soaked from rain.

One note to point out is even though the price point of this belt is incredibly good, we believe the thin fabric could wear down faster over time than some of the other wallets on this list.

The Apex wallet is made with fine leather that's heat bonded instead of being stitched. The result is a unique design that, when closed, fully encases the inner contents of the wallet from the outside elements. The Apex will hold a passport, cash, and 2-4 cards. And just like the Travel Wallet, you get a small micro pen that can be stored inside on the wallet's spine.

Handcrafted from USA heritage leather, Shinola's Utility Passport Wallet is truly made to age like fine wine. When opening up the wallet, one side contains a passport pocket while the other has 5 faille-lined pockets for your cards. It's not the most feature-loaded travel wallet on this list, and it's certainly not the cheapest, but if you're looking for something simple and timeless then this is the one.

You're not going to find another travel wallet like this one, and that's the point. Texas boot-maker Tecovas went and took the same authentic American alligator leather it uses for its boots and crafted the material into a passport case. The result is a one-of-a-kind piece with a passport pocket and 4 exterior card pockets. What's cool is you can even monogram it.

Of course the price point on this wallet is almost like buying a luxury good, but really the only qualm we have with the wallet is its availability. Sometimes it's popularity gets the best of it, and so you might have to turn to the Ostrich Passport Case or the original Passport Case —two excellent alternatives, no less.

Malbon Golf Yacht Club Passport Holder

Yacht Club Passport Holder

The streetwear-inspired golf brand Malbon Golf has been turning out tons of cool pieces this year. One of its products that has flown under-the-radar is this pebbled leather passport holder. We were surprised to open it up and see tons of card space to go with the passport pocket. And as far as style goes, it comes with cool embossments on the front and inner pocket and is available in three colors.

Tanner Goods Leather Passport Travel Wallet

Leather Passport Travel Wallet

If you liked the full leather of the Shinola travel wallet but wished it had a different interior configuration, then this travel wallet from Tanner Goods is a great alternative. Inside is a passport pocket with a small card pocket on top of the passport flap, plus two additional card slots on the other side.

The wallet might not hold a lot, but if you want a minimalist leather wallet with great style and a thin silhouette, then you'll be happy with this choice.

Zero Grid Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Travel Wallet Passport Holder

Similar to the belted travel wallet we featured earlier, this passport holder can be used as a sling bag and is made with waterproof ripstop and covered with RFID blocking material. What's cool is it zips shut, closing in the passport and up to 10 cards that can fit on the inside. You also get a small stylus that you can hang on the wallet's spine.

line

Buying a quality travel wallet is going to look a lot like buying your everyday wallet, but the two are not the same. Here's what you need to know.

  • Durability: Making sure your travel wallet is tough and made of good materials is of utmost importance. After all, this is your last line of defense to your passport—the most important document you need when traveling overseas. This prior notion is why we loved reviewing travel wallets made from tear-resistant and water-resistant materials (like the Pioneer Travel Wallet). Premium leather is also a good material to protect your passport, as the leather provides a thick layer to keep moisture and dust from getting to your papers.
  • Security Features: Some travel wallets comes with RFID (radio-frequency identification) lining to help prevent RFID theft. It's true this type of crime doesn't happen a lot, but it is possible, and so buying a travel wallet with RFID lining does add a level of security to your essentials. Another security feature to look for are zippered or snap closures that help keep your passport and cards sealed off. We like these closures because it helps limit the chances of any items accidentally falling out when traveling—which happens more than one might think.
  • AirTag Tracking: Although we only have one AirTag travel wallet we like right now, we anticipate more of these types of wallets to hit the market in the coming year. AirTag wallets have become a huge hit thanks to their tracking abilities, and so any travel wallet that can incorporate an AirTag in a slimming and discrete way should be considered on your shortlist of what travel wallets to buy.

Can You Use a Passport Covers as A Wallet?

commerce breaker

Travel wallets, also sometimes referred to as passport wallets, are the best possible choice for carrying your passport and your cash and cards. Travel wallets are not to be confused with passport covers, which are simply covers you can slide over your passport to add a level of protection.

Passport covers do theoretically have space where you could slide some cash plus 1-2 cards inside, but those spaces oftentimes make your valuables prone to falling out. A passport cover is not designed to hold anything more than a passport, and so whatever else you put in there is going to be like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Stick to a travel wallets for cash, card, and passport carry.

Why Trust Us

At any given point, writers and editors in our office are traveling, and so we plan accordingly whenever we are going to be up in the air to take one or two travel wallets with us to see how they perform. Lastly, we take a hands-on look at the travel wallets up close. We inspect everything from the material to the build of the wallet to determine it's durability and whether or not the price point reflects the overall quality.

How We Selected

Our MH commerce team thoroughly researched and tested dozens of the best travel wallets, from budget to designer to premium, gift-worthy models. Travel wallets are a useful way to keep your passport, cards, and money all in one place. Designed to be compact yet spacious, they’re a handy tool to hold your most valuable items all together and safe from loss, damage, or theft.

Travel Wallet

When you’re heading overseas, your passport and your money are just about the most important items you’ll need to take with you. Making sure these difficult-to-replace possessions are kept safely about your person while you’re away calls for a special kind of purse or wallet that’s both compact and secure.

To add an extra layer of protection to your credit and debit cards, many travel wallets are made using RFID-blocking material. This specially-designed lining prevents the data from your cards from being read or copied by unscrupulous thieves or tech-savvy pickpockets, anywhere in the world.

Of course, you could take your regular wallet with you, but why would you want to when there are so many great travel wallets that can offer you numerous benefits?

Here are some features you should consider before you make your purchase.

When you’re out exploring the world, the last thing you need is to be weighed down. Opt for either a small and straightforward travel wallet that will keep your cards and cash close by, or choose a larger model that can also carry your passport and travel documents while still maintaining a slim, compact profile.

RFID Protection

Modern-day travel wallets are often equipped with RFID-blocking material on the inside. This smart addition helps to protect against electronic pickpocketing and prevents criminals from accessing your data.

You should also consider more traditional safety measures like slash-proof straps and material and superstrong zippers or snaps that will keep your wallet securely fastened.

Material and Durability

A travel wallet is about both form and function. Just because you want it to be extra secure and super compact, it doesn’t mean it can’t look good, too. You can find wallets in a huge variety of designs and materials.

Leather is durable and sophisticated, while plastic is easy to clean and difficult to damage. Nylon composite fabrics are also popular as they’re very lightweight and designed to last.

It’s important to remember the adage “buy cheap, buy twice.” Prevent this by investing in the best quality wallet you can find in your price range.

Organization

While your regular wallet may be crammed full of old receipts, loyalty cards, and other day-to-day nonsense, your travel wallet will only need to hold the bare essentials.

Look for a wallet that has enough slots to hold your credit cards, a flat opening for notes, and a sealed section for coins. If you’re planning on carrying your passport, make sure your wallet is large enough to contain it.

Insider Today

Passports can be easily battered: Thin and light, they get worn down if you're a frequent traveler who shoves them into jeans pockets or carry-on backpacks that are filled to the brim.

I was never a fan of passport holders and cases until I found myself in situations when I needed one. I took a few international flights where I couldn't use mobile boarding passes and had to carry paper ones. I remembered what a pain it can be to keep track of your passport, boarding pass, and landing cards, plus other notes and documents you might need when you're throwing everything loose into a backpack pocket.

I decided to look into travel wallets and passport covers, thinking I can streamline everything if I could keep all the travel documents for a given flight in one holder; I'd also be able to protect my passport. I knew that money belts and travel wallets that go around the neck are popular, but I had no interest in one of those. I wanted a sleek, clean-looking wallet.

After researching different options and testing a handful, the Bellroy Travel Wallet was my consistent go-to. I've also included other great travel wallet options if Bellroy's wares aren't for you. Read on to see which of our picks is the best for your travel wallet needs.

  • The best overall: Bellroy Travel Wallet
  • The best minimalist travel wallet: Mr. Lentz Slim Passport Wallet
  • The best with a zipper: Fjällräven Passport Wallet
  • The best for family trips: Lewis N. Clark Travel Wallet
  • The best for holding boarding passes: Cuyana Classic Passport Case

best minimalist travel wallet

The Bellroy Travel Wallet keeps your passport, boarding passes, landing cards, and more in a compact, organized package.

Pros : Keeps everything you need handy while traveling, easy to navigate, great organization, includes a pen, small enough to carry in a pocket in the airport, has RFID-blocking capabilities

Cons : Too big to use as a daily wallet during trips

If you're a regular reader of Insider Reviews, chances are you're already familiar with Bellroy — after all, the company makes our favorite wallets. The Australian brand has a smart, minimalist, and functional design philosophy. It also uses ethically-sourced materials and has a great manufacturing process to produce high-quality gear.

What I love about Bellroy's travel wallet is that it holds everything. It has room for all of the travel documents you might need over the course of a multi-stop international trip, plus cash, credit cards, a SIM card, and even a pen.

At first glance, the wallet looks like an oversized bifold, opening just like an everyday wallet. One side has room for your passport, with a dedicated pocket that takes up that whole side. The other side has credit card slots — either two or four, depending on which edition of the wallet you choose — positioned vertically so you just drop the cards in. The wallet also has an open-top pocket like a traditional bill compartment, but it's divided into two sections.

There are a few more "hidden" card slots and a sim-card holder within the inner cash compartment, as well as my favorite feature of this wallet: a tiny pen, which is kept tucked away right in the middle so that you can fill out landing cards and jot any quick notes you need.

Available in a few colors, the wallet is big enough to hold just about any currency, and I like to keep a little bit in one of the sections of the large cash/document pocket. The other section is great for holding boarding passes, custom cards, and any other travel documents you might need to have handy. I prefer putting these in the outermost section so that they don't crease when folded. I use the inside part for cash — You can put cash in both sections, using the divider to keep different currencies separate.

In theory, Bellroy intends the travel wallet to be your everyday wallet on the road, something you can carry with your cards, cash, passport, and everything else you need for a day of exploring. I think it's a little big for that. I can certainly fit in in a back pocket or jacket when I'm in the airport, but it's big enough that I would be worried about theft walking around a city with it.

best minimalist travel wallet

The handmade Mr. Lentz Slim Passport Wallet is timeless and built to last.

Pros : Slim, rugged, handmade, holds the essentials

Cons : Needs to be broken in, brass rivets may not appeal to everyone

The Mr. Lentz brand is run by one person — Evan Lentz — who makes all of his products by hand in his own workshop. Lentz built the brand with a "modern cowboy" feel, designed to evoke days of hard work on the windswept plains, and his online shops reflect that with old-west images and icons.

Mr. Lentz makes wallets, bags, and other accessories using durable, rugged, and time-proven materials like full-grain leather, brass, and wood. Lentz's passport wallet is a typical example of this style.

The wallet is much more scaled-down than the Bellroy Travel Wallet making it great for those who just want to ensure some protection for their passport without adding a ton of bulk. A solid piece of leather makes a bifold that opens like a book. The right-side has a pocket for your passport, which is a little tight and only meant to fit the back cover of the passport. That way, the passport can be read without removing it from the wallet. You can just hand the whole package to the customs agent. Once the wallet breaks in a bit, you can fit the whole closed passport in that pocket.

The other side of the wallet has two card slots that can hold four to six cards. There's a larger pocket right behind the card slots that is perfect for holding a bit of spare cash. You can also fit travel documents, like boarding passes, in this sleeve.

Aesthetically, the Mr. Lentz Passport Wallet looks rugged and hardy. The thick full-grain leather holds up well and develops a nice patina as you use it and break it in. Solid brass rivets line the outsides of the wallet, holding it together. The wallet also ships with a free tin of proprietary leather conditioner to help keep it soft as it ages and breaks in.

Thin enough to fit in a front pocket, this wallet is a perfect option for those looking for something that will last a long time and hold just the essentials. You can also choose to engrave the wallet, using any of a few different methods.

best minimalist travel wallet

The Fjällräven Passport Wallet closes securely with a zipper and will hang on to your documents no matter where you go.

Pros : Water-resistant, protects your travel documents from the elements, keeps things from falling out and getting lost

Cons : Both sizes are bigger and bulkier than other travel wallets because of the zipper and material

If you're backpacking and carrying a lot, or want to just throw your travel documents in a bag's main compartment, a bifold travel wallet might not be your best option.

A more secure passport wallet with a zipper, like the Fjällräven Passport Wallet, lets you toss it in a bag with everything else, and you don't have to worry about anything falling out or getting lost.

The Fjällräven Passport Wallet is made of a water-resistant waxed canvas. Like most of the other passport wallets you'll find out there, the Fjallraven option is structured like a bifold, but this one has a zipper running along the entire outside.

When opened, the wallet has space to tuck your passport and folded boarding pass on the right side. There's also an interior zippered pocket, perfect for coins, ticket stubs, or other odd bits and ends. The left side of the wallet has six card slots, and there's an open pocket at the top for cash.

Fjallraven also makes a larger version of this wallet called the Travel Wallet , rather than the "Passport Wallet." They're basically the same thing; the main difference is that the Travel Wallet has a few more card slots and a loop to hold a pen, and is designed to fit unfolded boarding passes. It's almost more like a small purse or clutch. The smaller Passport Wallet can also hold a small pen and boarding passes, but there's no loop to keep it in place and boarding passes must be folded.

Personally, I prefer the smaller Passport Wallet — even though you have to fold your boarding passes to fit them, it's just a nicer hand-held size. However, both are great options, especially if you're storing the wallet in a bag.

best minimalist travel wallet

The Lewis N. Clark Travel Wallet keeps the whole family organized as you head on your next adventure.

Pros : Keeps a family's travel documents organized, well-positioned pockets and compartments, includes a pen

Cons : Large, won't fit in a pocket, zipper issues

Even though I love traveling, there's no doubt that it can be stressful. The stress is even worse when you're managing logistics for a group, even your own family.

While there's not much to do about it, you can at least make your group's time at the airports a little bit easier with the Lewis N. Clark Travel Wallet . With room for about four passports, plus cash, cards, boarding passes, customs forms, a pen, and even a phone, this is more than a travel wallet. It's more like a family travel organizer.

While the Lewis N. Clark is naturally bigger than a one-person travel wallet, it's smaller than you might expect considering how much it holds. That said, this isn't going in anyone's front pocket — think of it more as a folio.

The wallet folds closed like a clamshell and zips shut all the way around. When it's closed, there's still access to a small zip pocket on the front.

When open, there are three pockets on the right side that are for passports. You can fit a few passports in each pocket, according to Amazon reviewers. It has six credit card slots, a zipper compartment for change and cash, and a larger zippered compartment for boarding passes or cash on the left side. In the middle, there's a loop for a pen so you can fill out forms on the plane.

The Travel Wallet is made from nylon that's durable and protective. It also has RFID-blocking material built in to add an extra layer of protection to your cards and passports. As for downsides, some buyers mention problems with the zipper.

best minimalist travel wallet

Cuyana's Classic Passport Case  holds a full-size boarding pass and several cards in a chic leather wallet.

Pros:  Holds a full boarding pass, six card slots, multiple slide pockets for passports and more, stylish, fun colors, real leather

Cons:  Won't fit in your pocket

Cuyana is known for making quality leather goods for very affordable prices. The Insider Reviews team recently tested a number of the company's wallets, including the Classic Passport Holder. We loved the wallet so much that we wrote a full review about it.

The simple leather wallet was designed in San Francisco and handmade in Argentina. Measuring 9-inches long, it's longer than most other passport holders, so it can hold a full boarding pass without wrinkling or folding. Cuyana also added a dedicated pocket for your passport, six card slots, and two large slide pockets for travel documents and anything else you need.

The pebbled leather is soft and smooth, and the card slots keep your cards in place securely without being too tight. You can get the passport holder in navy blue, stone gray, red, black, or a crocodile-embossed black. If you so choose, Cuyana will even monogram your wallet.

Based on our experience, it's the perfect stylish travel wallet, but it won't fit in your pocket, unless you happen to be wearing some intense cargo pants. It's a great pick if you have space in your bag and need to manage documents that you simply don't want to fold. — Malarie Gokey

Your passport, boarding passes, money, phone and even your foreign sim card will be kept safe in its pockets, which, although for some, are on the tight side, will fit all your essentials for a compact travel companion.

3. Ekster Parliament Slim Leather Wallet

Losing your valuables is one of the biggest fears while travelling. Can technology help? Ekster makes a line of voice-activated wallets, including this relatively traditional-looking credit card holder. However, beneath the handcrafted leather look is some serious tech; as well as space for nine cards, six of which can be protected by a layer of RFID-block, but the wallet is also compatible with Alexa and Google Home, which using a Chipolo tag can make your wallet emit a ring when you ‘say “where’s my wallet?”

Funded within three hours on Kickstarter, this Ekster wallet also offers worldwide traceability via a smart card so you can tell you where it was last seen on a map. That’s the same technology used by FedEx to track its containers. What’s more, it’s all solar-powered and doesn’t run out of charge for two months.

The best practical travel wallet

Snugpak Grab A5

4. Snugpak Grab A5

If you’re an outdoors type who’s just as likely to find themselves in the wild as in an airport, you’re going to want a travel document holder with special skills. Cue the Grab A5 from sleeping bag-maker Snugpak. As well as documents, the Grab A5 – with is, naturally, the size of A5 paper, so fairly compact – has room for a pen holder and many other items in its small pockets (there’s even a dedicated phone pocket). The document storage section has a waterproof cover, which will add peace of mind if you go out on a hike. Zipped all around, it’s also got a small carry handle.

The best cheap travel wallet

CampTeck Travel Wallet & Organiser Pouch

5. CampTeck Travel Wallet & Organiser Pouch

Thoroughly affordable and with plenty of storage, this travel passport wallet can fit four passports and up to six cards, and is plenty big enough for storing boarding passes, too. Unlike most of its rivals, this product includes space for extras; inside are two pen holders, a zippered mesh pocket for notes and coins, and even a tab for attaching keys. It's also got RFID-blocking technology built-in to protect everything inside the wallet, which zips shut along three sides. It’s not particularly stylish, but it is very cheap.

The best minimalist travel wallet

Travando Slim Wallet

6. Travando Slim Wallet

This clever bi-fold wallet is crafted in Germany, and it shows. It’s organised so well; there are seven card slots – six on the inside and one on the outside – but despite that it’s a mere 11.9x8.3x1.6 cm. Unlike most modern travel wallets, it’s designed to carry cash, with a stainless steel money clip integrated into the interior that securely grasps bank notes. The Travando is also constructed to protect against data theft by RFiD scanners.

The best travel wallet for RFID protection

Pacsafe RFIDsafe V200 Travel Wallet

7. Pacsafe RFIDsafe V200 Travel Wallet

If you’re looking for a no frills travel wallet that that keeps your cards, cash and receipts safe, this Pacsafe wallet could serve you well. While you can see from the design that there is room enough for up to 8 cards, there’s also a window pocket each for your passport and driver’s license and plenty of room for loose change.

The manufacturer promises protection against identity theft, while the bracelet with its handy loop acts as a handy mechanism to prevent you from dropping it in the middle of the airport concourse.

The best waterproof travel wallet

Lifeventure RFID Protected Document Wallet

8. Lifeventure RFID Protected Document Wallet

RFID protected and featuring waterproof fabric and zip, this lifeproof travel document holder is the perfect practical solution to carrying around your documents. One side of the wallet is dedicated to travel money and cards, with 9 slots providing enough room for IDs, credit cards, debit cards and travel money cards.

Thanks to its RFID protection, you don’t need to worry about identity fraud, especially if you’re travelling to areas where that kind of thing is rife, and with a smartphone stash pocket, too, you can make sure all of your necessities are safely tucked away, yet completely accessible for when you need them.

The best compact travel wallet

LifeVenture RFiD Mini Travel Wallet

9. LifeVenture RFiD Mini Travel Wallet

When you’re travelling, you’re going to be on a budget and if you’re planning on backpacking off the beaten track, Lifeventure has made sure this travel wallet is prepared for all circumstances.

Find yourself waist deep in a river? It’s waterproof. Find yourself going through some sketchy looking areas? It protects against Radio-Frequency Identification devices. It boasts pockets for your passport, boarding passes, cash, cards and even your smartphone. It's the perfect compact travel wallet and for the price, and reviewers agree, you can’t beat it.

The best multi pocket travel wallet

Go Travel Document Organiser

10. Go Travel Document Organiser

This travel document holder is the perfect contender for the most amount of pockets featured in a small space competition. There’s several card slots, an ID slot, a travel money zipped pocket, a slot to put your boarding passes and enough slots for several passports, if you’re travelling as a family.

It’s also good to note that this travel wallet provides RFID protection, so you can be completely sure that your identification is safe. Comments suggest that it’s fairly bulky in size, and therefore needs a large pocket for storing it away, aside from that, it’s the perfect practical travel companion.

How to buy the best travel wallet for you

Your choice of travel wallet will partly depend on style. Leather screams ‘sophisticated businessman’, while durable, waterproof materials will appeal to those who only entertain travel-grade products that will last much longer than the air miles you collect.

Having space for passports and cards is standard, but not all travel document holders have space for keys, pens, and cash, and even some electronics.

You can find small travel wallets for single travellers, slightly bigger versions for couples, and whopping great A4-sized versions for large families and tour group leaders. They can be pocket-sized, or rucksack-sized, depending on your requirements. There are other things to think about, too.

Another aspect to consider is whether you want your travel wallet to provide protection against Radio-Frequency Identification devices (RFiD). Although rare, identification theft is an issue, and something you may or may not be worried out. Some of the best travel wallets block these devices, while others don’t, so it’s worth bearing it in mind when choosing. Ditto worldwide tracking, which adds even more peace of mind in case of theft.

When it comes to the best travel wallets, you get what you pay for. There’s nothing wrong with being cheap and cheerful, but if you want a wallet to become your faithful travel companion, you’re going to have to stretch that budget.

If you have a travel document holder, it's usefulness can spread beyond airports. Always take the same credit card when you travel? If you do have cards and documents that you only use when you travel – principally your passport, of course – a travel document holder is the ideal place to store them all when you are at home. Ditto emergency cash; no-one should go anywhere without at least US$50 in emergency cash (dollars are always better than pounds, especially when travelling outside Europe), and a travel document holder is the ideal place to keep it when you're at home as well as on your travels.

Travel wallets are all about getting rid of clutter, keeping your valuables safe and organized, and making sure you enjoy your trip. Less is more when it comes to carry on packing. Nowhere is that more true than your bulky, unsafe, outdated wallet.

Keys, wallet, phone.  When you head out the door, besides your  travel backpack , that’s all you really need. Heck, sometimes when you travel, you don’t even have a set of keys or your phone. Truly  minimalist travel  and  carry on packing  is all about getting rid of the gear you don’t need and slimming down the stuff you can’t live without. And, like it or not, every traveler needs a wallet.

Stop lugging around a subway sandwich loyalty card-filled monstrosity. Streamline your travel wallet, and who knows‚ it might streamline the rest of your life.

Below is our guide to finding the best travel wallet for your travel style and needs — whether you want RFID blocking or a wallet that doubles as a passport holder . Then, find recommendations for 28 travel wallets for men and women .

Travel wallets

Are Travel Wallets a Good Idea?

Yes, a travel wallet can help savvy travelers keep their cash, cards, and identity safe. With identity protecting features like RFID blocking and security features like hidden stash pockets, a good travel wallet is more functional than an everyday wallet.

The kind of travel wallet you need varies by destination. Europe and Australia use a lot of coins, so unless you want $20 rolling out of your pocket every time you sit on the train, get a travel wallet with a dedicated zipper pocket. In South America, cash is king, and  ATM fees add up , so carry a travel wallet slim enough to fit in your front pocket (aka theft proof ), yet big enough for your cash.

Besides size and zipper pockets, here’s what to look for in a travel wallet:

  • RFID blocking: These wallets have metal fiber mesh that prevents people from stealing your identity with an radio frequency identity detection (RFID) device.
  • Minimalist and streamlined : These wallets have just the basics, a pocket for your credit cards and a pocket for cash (if that).
  • Passport holder : These are larger wallets with room for your passport.
  • Zippered pockets : If you think you’ll have a lot of change or small items you want to keep close (like a SD card), a zippered pocket is a must. Some also have hidden stash pockets.
  • Fabric : Travel wallets come in a number of different fabrics—leather, carbon fiber, aluminum, canvas, and even a waterproof paper called Tyvek .
  • Water resistance : For outdoor adventures, a water resistant wallet can keep your cash dry and usable.

Even the best travel wallet is a compromise between size and function. Do a little research into the currency of your chosen destination before you buy something that you won’t use. Like a  money belt .

The Best Minimalist Travel Wallets for Men

Sometimes, all you need is a credit card, ID, and a bit of cash. These wallets get that.

Tyvek paper wallet review

1. Tyvek Paper Travel Wallet ($18)

I picked one of these futuristic durable paper wallets up a few years ago, and I loved it—while it lasted. While durable, they just don’t last as long as other wallets. And that’s ok.

These wallets are incredibly thin (just 3mm!), stupid light, and they’ll last for a few months of heavy use.

The best part is that they come in a wide range of awesome colors and styles, so go nuts and get one that really highlights your travel persona. I loved mine, and I remember it all these years later. That’s saying something.

Casmonal slim minimalist elastic travel wallet review

3. Casmonal Slim Minimalist Elastic Travel Wallet ($10)

If you’re looking for a great budget travel wallet, the Casmonal Elastic Travel Wallet is a steal. The design is similar to the Nomatics Basic, with slightly more give and capacity thanks to the elastic band.

Stuff up to 6 cards in the main compartment with room for your cash and other small items. These wallets are interesting, light, and a great way to flaunt your minimalism… if that’s even possible.

The wallet comes in 20 different color combinations, so that might help.

CHUMS Zipper wallet review

5. CHUMS Zipper Wallet ($12)

I’m a big fan of this “fanny pack” of travel wallets. As a surfer, I appreciate the zippered construction and nylon material, as well as the key ring.

This wallet/coin purse is perfect for keeping your wallet and keys together. Always. Ideal for travel in Australia, New Zealand, or Europe, especially if you’re a budget traveler trying to keep track of every one of those precious coins.

Nomatics BASIC minimalist travel wallet review

2. Nomatics BASIC Minimalist Travel Wallet ($20)

This sleek, minimalist wallet is the epitome of “less is more.” Designed around the idea that most travelers use one card everyday, Nomatic created an easy access tab for getting to your most used card. This wallet is great for every day carry, but it’s really designed for  digital nomads  and savvy travelers. You have your one loyalty card (that thing that gets you free flights), and you use it everywhere. Keep it handy with this minimalist wallet.

The stash pouch is also great for your Airbnb key or valuable coins when you’re abroad, and the main compartment holds an additional 3-4 cards with room for cash.

I’m a big fan of front pocket, minimalist wallets, and I’ve been rocking this wallet for a while, and while it’s a bit of a squeeze, I dig it. Keep your nicknacks, photos, and souvenirs where they’re safe— in the cloud .

Decommissioned Firefighter Hose Money Clips review

4. Decommissioned Firefighter Hose Money Clips ($29)

Not all money clips are created equal, especially when some are made out of actual upcycled polyester firefighter hose material.

Each wallet is unique, since they’re made from actual firefighter hoses, and they can obviously take a beating. Woven with T-90 nylon thread, and with room for 4-8 cards and cash, these wallets can take anything you can dish out.

With over 241 reviews, and a 5-star rating, what are you waiting for? Also, did I mention they’re made out of firefighter hoses? Oh, I did. Cool.

Infinity minimalist travel wallet review

6. Infinity Minimalist Travel Wallet ($13)

This coal black, super slim nylon-elastic fabric travel wallet is only for the true minimalist.

It features one main stuff pocket that stretches to accommodate up to 10 cards (although you won’t want to fit that many), and a cash pocket, which is small. This is a great wallet for weekend travel or for the digital nomad that lives in the cloud.

RFID blocking travel wallets

The Best RFID Travel Wallets for Men

Unlike regular wallets, RFID-blocking wallets have a thin metal mesh in them to prevent people with RFID readers from reading personal identifying information, like credit card details, in your wallet.

Kinzd slim front RFID blocking wallet review

1. Kinzd Slim Front RFID Blocking Wallet ($14)

Another great departure from bulky bi-fold wallets that just don’t fit in your front pocket, it’s got six card slots, and another dedicated “everyday” card slot. Plus, there’s a window pocket for your ID, so you don’t have to dig it out all the time.

The RFID blocking is a big plus over other slim wallets, and it adds a significant amount of capacity without a lot of bulk. The wallet weighs just under 1 ounce (depending on the material you choose). I’m a fan of the cork fabric for the ultimate lightweight, resilient travel wallet.

Dash elastico wallet review

3. Dash Elastic Wallet ($11)

This every day carry wallet from Dash , one of the bigger names in the wallet industry, features a slim, minimalist design, but manages to tack on a third organizational pocket. One for cards and cash, another for small items, and a third for change.

The strong elastic band keeps everything in place without taking up any space. And, of course, it has RFID-blocking built in.

Django Dapper Wallet review

2. Django Dapper Wallet with RFID blocking ($65)

According to the Django Products description, this heavy duty wallet is built to “solve problems.” And it does. This minimalist powerhouse holds up to 12 cards while still looking slim and feeling light thanks to the anodized aluminum hardware and silicon band/cash strap.

Finished with premium leather and built-in RFID blocking, this wallet is stylish and will help protect your identity abroad.

Bellroy hide and seek travel wallet review

4. Bellroy Hide & Seek Travel Wallet ($89)

Bellroy is the Cadillac of travel wallets. Made from premium grade leather, packed with features like internal pull tabs, four easy access card slots, a hidden coin pouch, flat bill section room for 12 cards, and RFID-protection it’s no wonder everyone wants one of these.

Everything they sell is also backed by a 3-year warranty. Bellroy makes a great travel wallet.

The Best Stylish Travel Wallets for Men

I’m not a huge fan of spending all your money to get a fancy wallet, but if you can afford weekly trips to Ibiza, you might as well look the part with these sleek, stylish travel wallets.

Slim 2 Travel wallet review

1. Slim 2 Travel Wallet ($32)

This stylish leather wallet is all about sleek minimalism. The microfiber lining, herringbone patterned elastic band, and leather exterior make this one of the coolest minimalist wallets you can own. Guaranteed to start a conversation, if that’s what you’re pulling your wallet out for.

best minimalist travel wallet

2. Madera Poquito Slim Wooden Travel Wallet ($45)

It doesn’t get cooler than a minimalist wooden wallet. It just doesn’t. Perfectly designed to hold 6 cards and cash, this masterpiece even features a hidden pocket for a spare key or coins. Seriously, this wallet is beautiful. It comes in cherry or walnut.

The best travel wallets for women

The Best Minimalist and Slim Travel Wallets for Women

For small purses and minimalist travelers, these slim women ‘s travel wallets will fit the bill — and your bills.

best minimalist travel wallet

1. Kate Spade Laurel Way Petty Saffiano Leather Wallet ($49)

A snazzy, small black wallet that only brings the essentials: six card slots, one zippered pocket, one exterior ID pocket. Think of this as your must-have wallet for a small purse. Or if you’re not a “wallet kinda person” but need someplace to keep your cards and ID, this wallet is for you.

YoToo bifold leather mini wallet review

2. YoToo Bifold Leather Mini Wallet ($19)

My favorite part about this wallet? The brown U-shaped leather on the top. It gives this wallet a smile. Based on the 4.3 out of 5 stars that 50+ reviewers gave this wallet, I’m not the only one who likes it.

One reviewer said,  “Very easy to get at everything, cards stay put and yet are easy to see and slide out. Slots for frequently used cards and lots of room to tuck away the ones you don’t need as often.”

Borgasets REFID small bifold womens travel wallet review

3. Borgasets RFID Small Bifold ($17)

For a slim women ‘s wallet, look no further. This slim and — dare I say it — cute wallet is perfect. Hardly wider than an iPhone 6 Plus, it’s crafted with leather and scores a whopping 4.6 out of 5 stars based on 147 reviews on Amazon. Their only complaint? No change pocket.

The Best Travel Wallet Clutches for Women

Fossil Emma RFID large zip clutch

1. Fossil Fiona Multifunction ($60)

A small leather wallet with a zippered top that packs more of a wallop that you’d expect from its unassuming outside. To quote one reviewer:  “The size may look small but it has lots of room/compartments for everything I need to carry.”

best minimalist travel wallet

3. Michael Kors Jetset Wallet ($127)

This gorgeous leather wallet kept popping up in my research. Everyone raves about it from its classic, sleek look to its great size. Listen to  Sher She Goes  gush about it:

“There’s tons of room on the inside and I can even stuff my iphone 6S plus inside, which is a huge plus in favor of the Michael Kors travel continental wallet. I especially love the durable saffiano leather, which only needs a spot clean to get off dust and spills.”

best minimalist travel wallet

2. Fossil Emma RFID Large Zip Clutch ($85)

This beautiful leather clutch doubles as your wallet and your purse for a night on the town. A wrap-around zipper keeps all your essential neatly tucked away. With 4.5 out of 5 stars based on 200+ reviews, you know this beauty is well-loved.

You can even tuck your iPhone 8 Plus safely inside. So you don’t run the risk of leaving important things in the Uber’s backseat when you reach your Airbnb.

The Best RFID Travel Wallets for Women

If RFID is what you are looking for, these are the best travel wallets for women with RFID blocking capabilities.

best minimalist travel wallet

1. Fossil Logan Small RFID Bifold ($35)

This small, sleek one-snap and one-zipper bifold brings snazz to your game and minimalist styling to your wallet. Five credit card slots and two billfold pockets keep you organized without going overboard. Small enough to slip into a small bag for a night out on the town. Bonus: it also is RFID blocking.

best minimalist travel wallet

Ideas for DIY Travel Wallets

Most of the wallets on this list cost less than $20, but if that’s still too much for you, there are always some sweet DIY alternatives.

Duct Tape Wallet (Free)

Yes, you can make your own duct tape wallet. Just  follow these instructions , and you’ll be on your way to hipster saintdom. Honestly, these wallets work just fine, but building them is a pain in the ass, and they don’t hold up well to weather or heavy use. Just spring for an actual travel wallet.

DIY Money Clip (Free)

A slightly better DIY travel wallet is the old binder clip wallet. This guy has a decent  YouTube tutorial  on it, but essentially, you clip your cards together in the main section of the clip, then wrap your cash around those cards, securing it all with the clip “ears.”

I’ve used one of these for a few months, and it was fine, but the clip really doesn’t handle too few cards very well, and it’s not the easiest wallet to use. You’ll probably lose a card or some cash, and if nothing else, you’ll scratch up your cards and ID. Not highly recommended, but still pretty neat if you need something in a pinch.

Travel wallets are all about getting rid of clutter, keeping your valuables safe and organized, and making sure you enjoy your trip. Less is more when it comes to carry on packing and  digital nomadism.  Nowhere is that more true than your bulky, unsafe, outdated wallet.

  • Front pocket wallets are the most theft-proof
  • RFID blocking technology is affordable and valuable
  • Cash is still king in many countries—know before you go
  • Minimalism is amazing
  • The best travel wallet might just be a binder clip if you’re savvy

Ladies, the best travel wallets for you might be:

  • Kate Spade Travel Wallet ($180)  – fits your passport, money, and made from supple leather.
  • Fossil Logan RFID Flap Clutch ($85)  – stay organized, plus it’s big enough to slip your smartphone inside
  • Michael Kors Jetset Wallet ($127)  – you can’t go wrong with this crowd favorite

Finding the Best Minimalist Travel Wallet for Your Adventures

best minimalist travel wallet

When it comes to choosing the best minimalist travel wallet , there are several factors to consider. You'll want to think about your specific needs, such as how many cards and cash you typically carry, whether you need RFID protection, and if you prefer a certain material or design.

With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to narrow down your choices. But fear not we've done the research for you and compiled a list of the top minimalist travel wallets that will make your next trip stress-free and organized.

  • 1 Consider Your Needs
  • 2.1 Leather vs. Synthetic Materials
  • 2.2 Durability and Longevity
  • 2.3 Eco-friendly Options
  • 3 Security Features
  • 4 Size and Capacity
  • 5.1 Benefits of High-End Minimalist Travel Wallets:
  • 5.2 Benefits of Budget-Friendly Minimalist Travel Wallets:
  • 6 Customer Reviews and Ratings
  • 7 Pick the Wallet That's Best for You

Consider Your Needs

Before you start shopping for the best minimalist travel wallet , it's important to consider your specific needs. One of the most important factors to consider is your budget.

There are plenty of budget-friendly options available that are perfect for travelers who don't want to spend too much money on a wallet. These wallets may not have all the bells and whistles of more expensive models, but they still get the job done.

Another factor to consider is customization possibilities. Some people prefer a wallet that can be customized with their name or initials, while others prefer a simple and sleek design without any additional personalization.

If you're someone who likes to add a personal touch to everything, you might want to look for wallets that offer customization options. Sometimes having customizations makes it easier to pinpoint your wallet if you set it down.

You should also think about what kind of traveler you are and how minimalist you like to be. More minimalist travelers might prefer traveling light with just the essentials .

If simplicity is key for you, then opt for something more streamlined vs. the bulkier wallets that are designed to carry everything and anything. Ultimately, when it comes down to finding the best minimalist travel wallet for your needs, it's all about striking a balance between functionality and style.

Material Matters

When it comes to choosing the right material for your minimalist travel wallet, there are a few things you should consider. The material can make a huge difference and you want to find the right pick for you.

Leather vs. Synthetic Materials

Leather wallets exude sophistication and style, but synthetic options offer durability and functionality. When it comes to choosing between the two materials for your minimalist travel wallet, it ultimately boils down to your personal preference and how you intend to use it.

  • Durability: Synthetic materials, such as nylon or polyester, are more resistant to wear and tear compared to leather, which can scratch easily. If you're an adventurous traveler who loves outdoor activities, a synthetic wallet may be a better choice.
  • Aesthetics: Leather wallets come in various colors and textures that add elegance and charm to any outfit. However, synthetic options also can have sleek designs that cater to minimalist tastes.
  • Maintenance: Leather wallets require regular conditioning with oils or creams to keep them supple, while synthetics only need wiping with a damp cloth for cleaning.
  • Price: Leather is generally more expensive than synthetic materials due to its luxurious appeal and, oftentimes, hand craftsmanship.

Durability and Longevity

If you want a minimalist travel wallet that can withstand the test of time, then you need to prioritize durability and longevity. When it comes to choosing the right material for your wallet, consider options that are known to be sturdy and long-lasting .

Another important factor to consider is repairability options. No matter how durable your travel wallet may be, accidents can happen. It's important to choose a wallet with easy-to-find replacement parts or repair services available should something break or wear down over time.

Additionally, look for wallets made with impact-resistant materials as they will be better able to handle being dropped or bumped around during your travels. A sturdy and reliable travel wallet will not only save you money in the long run but also give you peace of mind knowing that your essential items are protected while on the go.

Eco-friendly Options

For eco-conscious travelers, there are sustainable wallet options available that not only reduce waste but also promote ethical production. Sustainable alternatives such as wallets made from recycled plastic bottles or upcycled materials like cork or hemp are increasingly popular choices among minimalist travel enthusiasts.

These wallets provide a stylish and durable option for those who care about the environment and want to make a difference. Sustainable travel wallets can also help reduce carbon footprint.

Wallets made from recycled materials can save energy by reducing the need for new raw materials while diverting plastic waste from landfills and oceans. Ethically produced wallets ensure that workers receive fair wages and work in safe conditions, promoting social responsibility in the manufacturing process.

Choosing an eco-friendly travel wallet is not only a smart choice for your travels but also makes a positive impact on our planet's sustainability efforts. We personally feel that part of being a minimalist traveler is also trying to be an eco-friendly traveler as well.

Security Features

When looking for the best minimalist travel wallet, its important to consider security features and how they will help you, especially while traveling. The good news is that you can typically find a great, sleek travel wallet that offers protection.

  • RFID protection: This blocks electromagnetic signals and prevents skimming devices from stealing your credit card information.
  • Hidden pockets: Discreet compartments are perfect for stashing extra cash or important documents like passports or boarding passes.
  • Durable materials: A well-made minimalist travel wallet should be constructed with high-quality materials that can withstand wear and tear over time.
  • Locking mechanisms: Some minimalist wallets come with lockable zippers or clasps to provide an extra layer of security.

Overall, if you're looking for peace of mind when traveling, investing in a good quality minimalist travel wallet with added security features is well worth it. Not only will it help protect against identity theft and fraud but also provide convenience by keeping all your essential items organized in one place.

Size and Capacity

Consider the size and capacity of your wallet before purchasing to ensure it can hold all your necessary items without being too bulky or cumbersome. One important factor is organization options, which can make a big difference in how efficiently you can access your cards, cash, and other essentials.

Some minimalist travel wallets have compartments for specific items like passports or boarding passes, while others use elastic bands or slots to keep everything in place. Weight and portability are also key considerations when choosing a minimalist travel wallet.

You want something that won't weigh you down, but still has enough room for all the essentials. Look for materials that are lightweight yet durable, such as water-resistant nylon or RFID-blocking fabric.

Some wallets even come with detachable straps or clips so you can attach them to your belt loop or backpack for added convenience. Color and pattern choices may seem like a minor detail when it comes to travel wallets, but they can actually play an important role in helping you stay organized and easily spot your wallet among your other belongings.

Style and Design

When choosing a travel wallet, it's important to reflect your personal style and taste in the design and aesthetics of the wallet. You want a minimalist wallet that looks great and suits your needs.

Functionality vs. aesthetics is always a tough decision to make, but with the right balance, you can have both. Focus on what works for you and how you typically dress.

If you're looking for a high-end minimalist travel wallet that oozes class and sophistication, then go for one made from high-quality leather or suede materials. The smooth texture of these wallets exudes luxury and refinement while providing exceptional durability, making them an excellent investment piece.

On the other hand, if you're on a budget, there are plenty of affordable options available that still look stylish without breaking the bank. We suggest looking closely at your wants and needs and then picking what's best for you.

Benefits of High-End Minimalist Travel Wallets:

  • Luxurious feel
  • Exceptional durability
  • Timeless design
  • Aesthetically pleasing

Benefits of Budget-Friendly Minimalist Travel Wallets:

  • Affordable pricing
  • Lightweight and compact
  • Practical functionality
  • Wide range of choice

Ultimately, whether you choose an expensive or budget-friendly wallet depends on what best aligns with your priorities: style or practicality?

If you value premium materials and timeless designs over affordability when it comes to fashion accessories, then investing in a high-end minimalist travel wallet is worth considering. However, if practicality takes precedence over all else, then going for a budget-friendly option would be perfect for your needs.

Whichever way you decide to go, make sure to choose a travel wallet that matches both your personality and functional requirements perfectly.

Customer Reviews and Ratings

Looking for customer reviews and ratings can help you make an informed decision on which minimalist travel wallet to purchase. By reading what other travelers have experienced with their wallets, you can get a better idea of the pros and cons of each brand. This way, you'll know what to expect from your new wallet before it even arrives.

One top brand that consistently receives high ratings is Bellroy . Their wallets are praised for being functional yet stylish, with plenty of room for cards and cash. Customers also appreciate the quality materials used in the construction of Bellroy wallets, making them durable enough to withstand frequent travel.

Another popular brand among minimalist travelers is Slimfold . These wallets are known for their slim design that can fit comfortably in your pocket without adding bulk. Many customers also appreciate how easy it is to access their cards and cash with Slimfold wallets, making them ideal for those who want a simple yet effective solution.

Of course, not all customer reviews are positive, but they can still be helpful in guiding your purchasing decision. Some common complaints about minimalist travel wallets include the lack of space or difficulty accessing certain pockets or compartments . Reading both positive and negative reviews can give you a well-rounded understanding of what each brand has to offer.

By taking the time to read through customer reviews and ratings, you'll be able to find the best minimalist travel wallet for your needs. Keep an eye out for top brands while also considering any potential drawbacks mentioned by reviewers. With this knowledge in hand, you'll be sure to find a wallet that'll serve as a reliable companion on all your future travels.

Pick the Wallet That's Best for You

In the end, the most important aspect of finding the perfect minimalist wallet is selecting something that you love. Choose a product that you will want to use every day and also fits all of your needs.

Each traveler is different and what works for one, might not work for another. Kelsey has a small black wallet that fits several cards and cash while Phil has one of the slimmer options from Bellroy .

Think of what you need to take with you and then try to find the most minimalist option. This way you have the necessities without sacrificing space.

Best Minimalist travel wallet: Pacsafe passport wallet review

Love it? Share it!

Are you tired of bulky wallets with zippers that snap, and don’t even fit in all travel bags? Get organized with the best minimalist travel wallet by one of the leading industry experts. The Pacsafe passport wallet is the answer to a fuss-free, anti-theft travel wallet that fits into every bag possible, it is unisex and is as soft as butter!

Note: This post is not sponsored by Pacsafe or any of its sellers. I have used the product and hence wanted to share this travel gear discovery.

I am in love with my Pacsafe passport wallet – slim RFIDsafe TEC. This little nugget is filled with essential anti-theft features and can be used both as a men and women’s wallet and passport holder.

I have used a fair bit of passport covers and wallets in my life. Starting from fabric-lined simple passport cover to dashing leather wallets to multi-slot zippered ones. Unfortunately, most of them don’t have any anti-theft blocking features called RFID.

Click to view prices/reviews on Amazon

My search for passport wallet began, because

  • I wanted an anti-theft wallet or cover, which can protect the newly issued passports that come with radio chips. If you own a newly issued US or Canadian passport – you need this too!
  • I also wanted something that would store credit cards as well (“tap” feature is notorious sometimes and you do not even notice how innocently we brush our bags/purses against the cash counter).
  • And thirdly, I wanted something compact to fit into my cross-body bag (small size). My long zippered wallet was a no-go.

Why Pacsafe?

Pacsafe is a world leader in manufacturing anti-theft travel bags from purses to backpacks and passport sleeves. They have been in this business for the past 20 years and the founders are actually lifelong travel buddies.

I compared quite a few passport wallets and wanted something slim or small, and just to hold the essentials – you got it – a minimalist travel wallet with RFID blocking protection as well. I normally carry my passport on the go, I never leave it at the hotel. And on our recent trip to Barcelona , I had plans to switch out my crossbody bags (it was a long trip). The crossbody bag that I carried is small, and this passport travel wallet fits perfectly inside both of the small bags.

Pacsafe RFIDsafe TEC Slim Passport Wallet: Product specifications:

  • Smooth welded material, made with one stitch design
  • Microfiber interior lining
  • 2 snap buttons for closure
  • RFID blocking properties
  • Weight: 2.1 ouches
  • 4 ID and credit card slots
  • 1 large passport compartment (can fit up to 2 Canadian passports and/or cash)
  • Comes in two colors – Black and Navy Blue

Pacsafe Minimalist Passport Wallet Features

Ultra minimalist design:.

The minimalist design of the Pacsafe wallet is perfection. It has 4 credit card slots and one generous compartment for passport or two. This is great for those carrying 2 passports – dual citizenship holders, for a parent traveling with a minor or as a couple.

Pacsafe Passport Wallet - Best minimalist travel wallet

This Pacsafe travel wallet is neat and smooth. It is made up of welded material, which won’t stretch over time like faux or vegan leather (that was one reason why I didn’t go with Dash travel wallets , I have heard great things about it, but the leather stretching makes me nervous. I also own a leather passport holder from Fossil which I really liked, but is now showing signs of wear and tear).

RFID blocking technology:

RFID protection is an important requirement when I researched about getting a new passport wallet. I intended to keep my credit cards in them safe and secure. Pacsafe comes with RFID protection, and this is particularly useful for credit cards and newer passports.

RFID stands for Radio-frequency identification and it uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and transmit information. In simple terms, think about it like your “tap” functionality of your debit and credit cards.

Many passports including the United States and Canadian ones have built-in chip technology in the newer passports. However, there is a lot of debate as to whether they work the same way as credit cards, as many experts claim it is not. (“US passports issued since 2007 all have an RFID chip in the front cover”) – source*

Anyhow, I thought better safe than sorry, might as well buy a wallet that includes RFID blocking technology. This peace of mind, while exploring crowded streets in Europe is priceless.

Storage Capacity of Pacsafe Passport wallet:

4 credit card slots and one main passport compartment, can fit up to 2 passports. As you can see from our pictures I can fit 2 Canadian passports.

Soft to touch and resistant: Slim minimalist wallet

Having used the Pac safe SEC Slim passport wallet for over a year, I safely say it is a keeper. It has been in and out of travel purses and backpacks, and had shared space with pens, cosmetic items, cellphone, and keys – and still looks great. I love how super smooth it is to touch.

Ultra-lightweight minimalist travel wallet

This Pacsafe passport wallet only weighs 2.1 ounces, so it is super lightweight. The wallet material won’t add any weight to your main travel bag, for sure.

Perfect size to slip in all travel bags – Pacsafe slim wallet

No matter if you are carrying a mini crossbody or a bulky camera backpack, this minimalist travel wallet will be your forever companion and will slide in (and out) of any bags you travel with.

One of the many reasons I bought this passport wallet is its size and easy access. It is small, but it packs a punch and has room for the trip essentials. I have also kept cash in it, alongside my passport. All of it fits like a glove!

Unisex design and a perfect gift

I feel the design of the Pacsafe passport wallet is timeless. I don’t think anyone will be bored with it – it’s a simple, sleek wallet in basic colors. Due to its versatility and unisex design, this travel wallet can also be a great gift idea for any travel lover!

What I absolutely like about this minimalist passport wallet – Pacsafe RFID Slim passport wallet

The number one thing that I like about this minimalist passport wallet that is it super lightweight and slim. My passport slides in comfortably when room for more. I can even store Salil’s if I want – two passports can fit in easily.

It has 4 credit card slots, which are also generous. I store my driver’s license and my credit cards here. If you have more than 4 cards, carry your card-holder inside the wallet, or use any of these paper RFID cardholders to put the cards in, inside your purse.

Minimalist Travel wallet

The travel wallet doesn’t have a zipper which a good thing. Zippers are prone to breakage than a simple bi-fold or snap buttons. This one comes with two snap buttons.

The passport wallet’s body is smooth and is made of high quality welded material, no leather. The interiors feel plush with microfibre lining.

Conclusion Minimalist Passport Wallet –  Is the money spent on the  Pacsafe RFID Slim passport wallet  worth it?

10000% YES! I paid $29.99 USD plus taxes for the Pacsafe travel wallet. Although it is priced $5-10 USD more than any Amazon seller’s passport wallet, I think this wallet is worth it.

You are paying for a better quality product, which is backed by a branded company – Pacsafe who is a leader in anti-theft products. It is versatile and durable, I am sure you will love it and use it for years!

I hope you found this 5 pocket minimalist travel wallet review useful. A passport is an important travel document (and a piece of our identity), so it deserves to be cared for and kept well. Happy travels!

The 16 Best Cardholders and Small Wallets to Streamline Your EDC

Less is more. It’s time to ditch your Encyclopedia-sized bifold for one of these minimalist wallets.

Call them what you want. Cardholders, or small wallets, are the best choice for carrying cash, plastic and a few extra business cards but not much else.

They’re also better for you . Prolonged periods of sitting on a thick wallet could actually cause back problems. There’s even a name for it: wallet neuritis .

Don’t buy it? Well, maybe you don’t need those year-old receipts, punch cards and reward program fobs, anyway. Read on to find out which cardholders work best to cut out the clutter.

How We Tested

Our team has gone hands on with dozens of cardholders over the years. We also consulted experts and factored in broader shopper feedback from hundreds of online reviews before the latest update to this guide.

When making our picks, we accounted for a number of consumer preferences, including how well these cardholders fit into different pockets and how they address RFID fraud (if at all).

Learn more about our testing process and methodology .

Best Overall Card Holder

Anson Calder Card Wallet

Anson Calder Card Wallet

  • Ages gracefully with constant use
  • Hard to access interior cards
  • $140 at Anson Calder

Anson Calder’s ultrasleek Card Holder comes with two slots for cards and a center stash spot for cash. The stash spot is small but the card slots are not — they stretch, as most leather-based pockets do, the more you use them.

Plus, pushing them out is easier with this wallet than others, because you have the easy access thumb spot at the bottom. But our tester found it wasn’t all that easy to access ones at the center without removing the entire stack.

“The open slot for sliding them out makes a ton of sense,” they said, “but not if you frequently use all of your cards.”

Best Upgrade Cardholder

Shinola Five Pocket Card Case

Shinola Five Pocket Card Case

  • Protects against RFID fraud without being obvious
  • Feels a little small for the price
  • $150 at Shinola

Shinola uses vachetta leather — a type of lightly treated Italian leather favored by more than a few famous bag makers — for its Five Pocket Card Case.

Find the Shinola logo on one side and a unique production number on the other. The liner inside is also leather, along with an additional layer that helps protect against RFID fraud.

The Best MagSafe Cardholder

phone with a wallet case on it

Moft Flash Wallet and Stand

  • Adjust the viewing angle up to 180 degrees
  • Supports both portrait and landscape modes
  • Thicker and heavier than MagSafe wallets without stands
  • $35 at Moft

Moft makes several MagSafe wallets. This is one is a bit thicker and heavier than others due to the kickstand but not by much. The weight is also well worth it. You can adjust the viewing angle up to 180 degrees and it supports both portrait and landscape modes.

Best Affordable Cardholder

herschel charlie wallet

Herschel Supply Co. Charlie Cardholder Wallet

  • Very affordable
  • Super lightweight
  • Available in more than two dozen colors
  • Not very durable
  • No RFID protection
  • $25 at Herschel

Herschel’s Charlie Cardholder Wallet is woven from hard-wearing fabric, with a contrasting striped liner made from the same material.

There are a total of five pockets, two on each side and one in the center. It’s available in 22 different colors, ranging from solid black to a camo print.

Best Metal Cardholder

Ridge Wallet

Ridge Wallet

  • Lasts a lifetime
  • Easy to disassemble for cleaning
  • Hard to keep cards organized
  • Starts at $95

The Ridge Wallet can hold up to 12 cards in its RFID-blocking aluminum body. It adjusts so it can stay tightly wrapped around one card if that’s all you carry and comes with an elastic strap to hold your cash; there’s also the option to swap the strap for a money clip.

The Ridge Wallet is the best metal cardholder because it of its simple, fuss-free and function-forward design. “The whole unit is incredibly streamlined, durable and … haptically satisfying to use,” said one of our testers. Like some pocket knives, it can be disassembled for a thorough clean.

But there is one major problem with the Ridge Wallet: some cards fray, especially paper ones (business cards, vaccine cards, reward cards), because the edges are exposed. Laminated cards, like a normal credit card, will fare better.

Read more about the Ridge Wallet in our in-depth review .

Best Fabric Cardholder

Pioneer Carry Molecule Cardholder

Pioneer Carry Molecule Cardholder

  • Fuss-free and nearly indestructible
  • Ideal size for light card counts
  • Break-in takes a while
  • $65 at Huckberry

Our testers love Pioneer Carry’s Molecule Cardholder, which is small but mighty. In fact, one said they “will probably never buy from another brand as long as Pioneer is in business.”

The fabric is a proprietary 10XD that’s pretty much indestructible under everyday conditions. “I’ve never so much as blemished it,” our tester said. “Also the stitching and reinforcements are phenomenal. I’ve never once worried about a seam busting.”

black cardholder

Speaking of stitching, another tester turned to Pioneer Carry when their classic leather bifold broke. They’ve been using the Molecule Cardholder daily for over seven years. “This is the wallet I carry so I never have to think about my wallet,” they said.

Best Made-in-USA Cardholder

Tanner Goods Journeyman

Tanner Goods Journeyman

  • Leather is high quality
  • Light leather does show stains
  • $95 at Tanner Goods

Made from durable, 3.5-ounce tooling leather, the Tanner Goods Journeyman boasts just enough room — four slots and a central pocket — for your cards and some folded bills.

Like most of the brand’s Portland-made leather goods, the Journeyman is offered in a range of different dyes if you don’t want the natural look (pictured). Monograms can be added for an extra $20.

Best Slim Cardholder

Leatherology Slim Card Case

Leatherology Slim Card Case

  • Clear monogram gives an elegant edge
  • Affordable for a leather wallet
  • There is nicer leather out there
  • $50 at Leatherology

Made from full-grain leather, Leatherology’s Slim Card Case lives up to its name. It has four slots for cards, a center stash pocket for cash and little else.

There are options made with nicer leather but not many for less than $50. The Slim Card Case comes in a bunch of colors and the option of RFID for just $5 more.

Best Bifold Cardholder

billykirk wallet

Billykirk 427 Bifold Card Case

  • Classic form makes it feel like a true wallet
  • Oval cutouts make it easy to grab cards
  • Bifold design is a little bulky for a minimalist wallet
  • $85 at Billykirk

This wallet features three pockets, two of which are fashioned with oval cutouts for accessing frequently used cards.

Oiled and edged by hand, each wallet is finished with rugged wax cording. Add an embossed monogram for $15 more.

Best Cardholder for Front Pockets

front pocket cash card case

Filson Front Pocket Cash and Card Case

  • Curved design fits snugly in a front pocket
  • High-quality bridle leather
  • Pants vary, so it might not fit neatly in every pocket
  • Expensive for such a small wallet
  • $105 at Filson

Only your basic necessities will fit inside this Filson wallet, but that’s the point. Made from hard-wearing bridle leather, Filson’s Front Pocket Cash and Card Case is curved to complement the bottom of most front pockets.

Best Pouch Cardholder

rrl concho leather wallet

RRL Leather Wallet

  • Pre-aged patina makes this an easy carry from day one
  • Unique design
  • Big when fully filled
  • Expensive, even for RRL
  • $225 at Ralph Lauren

RRL’s Leather Wallet arrives with a patina that would normally take years to develop. That means it looks great and is easy to use from day one.

Crafted from premium vegetable-tanned Italian leather, the Leather Wallet boasts a snap button closure, four card slots and a debossed branded logo on the back.

Best Phone Case Cardholder

bellroy phone case cardholder

Bellroy Phone Case 3 Card

  • Smart, compact way to ultimately carry less
  • Fits up to three cards
  • If you lose your phone, you lose your cards, too
  • MagSafe requires removal
  • Starts at $45

Is a wallet still too much? This Bellroy phone case can hold up to three cards. Inside, there’s also a spot for a second SIM card and a tool to remove it.

The case itself is made from leather and the inner liner is a soft, velvet-like material. MagSafe- and Qi-charging requires removing the case, however.

Best Cardholder for an Apple AirTag

cardholder with airtag

Nomad Goods Card Wallet

  • Designed for AirTag integration
  • Sleek design with rounded corners
  • Nomad's Card for AirTag costs $20 extra
  • Not as durable as other leather options
  • $80 at Nomad Goods

Nomad Goods is best known for its tech accessories, so it makes sense that the brand’s leather wallets would be designed with AirTag integration in mind.

The Card Wallet is the Nomad Goods’s most minimalistic option and the center pocket perfectly fits what the brand calls the Card for AirTag , a polycarbonate, credit card-shaped frame to house an AirTag. Unfortunately, that costs $20 extra.

Best Zip-Up Cardholder

Ettinger Capra Mini Pouch

Ettinger Capra Mini Pouch

  • Zips closed to keep your contents truly contained
  • No true way to organize it
  • $170 at Todd Snyder

Unless they fold or snap shut, most wallets never fully close. Ettinger’s Capri Mini Pouch can, courtesy of a zipper that runs the length of its top side.

The wallet itself is made from goat leather, a material lauded for its durability. Plus, its natural grain hides scratches and stains pretty well.

Cardholder with Most Unique Design

Postalco 10038 Card Holder

Postalco 10038 Card Holder

  • Offers lots of room for cards, cash and other papers
  • Ships free from Japan
  • Shipping can take a while
  • $97 at Postalco

This narrow, vertically fashioned bifold from Tokyo-based brand Postalco features two internal pockets made from water-resistant pressed cotton, which are attached by a single piece of calfskin leather.

The wallets are available in a number of muted colors, including olive green and black.

Best Vegan Leather Cardholder

The Good Business Puffer Card Holder

The Good Business Puffer Card Holder

  • Soft build lets it bend in your pocket
  • Cards feel secure
  • A little slippery in the hand
  • $65 at The Good Business

The Good Business is a relatively new brand. Right now, it only makes one thing: this vegan leather puffer wallet that comes in a few different colors.

The wallet is water resistant but a bit slippery. When loaded, the cards are easy to access and you don’t need to worry about them slipping out.

Not to be dramatic, but losing a passport or other travel documents can be a huge nightmare while traveling. To safeguard passports, credit cards, and boarding passes, we recommend using a passport wallet to keep everything organized in one spot.

We researched and tested 16 passport wallets in various sizes and materials to recommend options that fit the needs of all types of travelers. We paid close attention to traits like capacity, durability, functionality, and organizational features to ensure smooth travels. Keep reading to find out which ones surpassed our expectations during testing.

Best Overall

Leatherology zip around travel wallet.

  • Capacity 5 /5
  • Ease of Use 5 /5
  • Quality 5 /5

The exterior zipper adds an extra layer of security to keep passports and credit cards safe while traveling.

It might be too large to fit in a smaller purse or sling bag .

While most passport wallets we tested have a snap-closure, this one has a zipper that wraps around the entirety of the wallet to ensure a passport and other travel essentials remain safely tucked away in transit. The versatile design is so spacious that it can easily hold multiple passports, up to eight credit cards, cash, and coins without feeling bulky or cumbersome to carry. There’s even an exterior pocket for boarding passes so you don’t have to open up the wallet for access. It might be too big to fit in small purses, but the sleek leather look and larger size makes it possible to carry it as a clutch or place into a backpack or tote bag, if needed.

Bellroy RFID Travel Wallet

The wallet easily fits in a back pocket.

The wallet will be bigger if it’s packed full and may not fit then.

Minimalist travelers will appreciate the sleek and simple design of Bellroy’s RFID Travel Wallet. We dubbed it our favorite slim option since it can fit virtually anywhere, including in a back pocket (just be sure to take it out of your pocket before going through security). Made out of a soft and durable leather, it never scuffed or scratched while traveling and it looks premium on the outside. The wallet has pockets for a passport, cash, credit cards, and plane tickets, and we love that there aren’t so many pockets that items get disorganized or lost in the void. The best part is that it opens like a standard wallet so we could quickly grab our passports and credit cards while traveling.

Best for Families

Valante travel document organizer.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5

It has pockets for multiple passports, plane tickets, and cash.

The large capacity might be too big for solo travelers.

Family travel can be hectic, so we recommend this spacious wallet that can keep all of your family’s important documents in one safe spot. Designed to store multiple passports, credit cards, plane tickets, and more, there are tons of pockets to place items neatly. There’s even a key leash, two zippered pockets, a pen holder, and two designated slip pockets for boarding passes in the front of the wallet. Because the wallet is on the larger side, we love that it comes with a wrist strap to hold onto it while going through customs or the TSA security line. The size might be too large for solo or minimalist travelers, but it works perfectly for staying organized while traveling in groups.

Best Faux Leather

Melsbrinna waterproof rfid-blocking travel wallet.

The PU leather material feels just as soft and durable as regular leather.

The clear plastic window pockets could scratch over time.

Similar to our overall pick, this passport wallet isn’t made out of genuine leather, but it has the same premium look and feel. Made with layers of PU leather, there is a piece of RFID-blocking fabric sandwiched between the material for extra protection while traveling with chipped documents. This sleek wallet comes with all of the standard pockets for a passport, credit cards, and boarding passes, but there were several other features that made it stand out in testing. We are big fans of the two SIM card slots and two plastic window pockets for extra organization for international travelers. Our only concern is that the plastic might scratch or wear over time, but it depends on how often you use the wallet and care for it.

Best Color Options

Lucrin geneva passport travel wallet.

The sleek and spacious wallet comes in over 21 colors and five leather texture options.

The premium materials come with a higher price.

One of our favorite leather passport wallets we tested, this one from Lucrin impressed us with a variety of color and texture options to please any and all travelers. There are over two dozen color options available and five different leather textures to choose from, including smooth, granulated, square granulated, vegetable tanned, and crocodile patterned. Once you narrow down your desired color and texture, we’re confident travelers will love the luxurious feel of the premium leather and generous capacity of the snap-closure wallet. It features several slip pockets, thirteen credit card slots, and a large zippered pocket for storing smaller items like coins or a pen. While the price is on the higher end, we believe you get what you pay for with this made-to-last passport wallet.

Best Crossbody

Pacsafe rfidsafe v150 rfid-blocking compact organizer.

It comes with a removable strap to keep the wallet attached to your body.

The strap isn’t adjustable.

A lost passport can put a huge damper on a trip, so we recommend the Pacsafe RFID-blocking wallet with a removable crossbody strap for keeping your travel documents attached at the hip (literally). You can wear the strap across your body, on your wrist, or through a belt to ensure the wallet is securely fastened on the go. Besides the ability to wear the wallet as a purse, we love all of the slip and zippered interior pockets for a passport, credit cards, cash, or coins, which will keep you plenty organized. The nylon material is water-resistant with a thick and durable feel, so we expect this wallet will stand the test of time.

Best Budget

Tigari passport and vaccine card holder.

The high-quality materials and functionality of this wallet are unbeatable for the low price.

It feels a bit big to carry around.

If you’re trying to build a luggage capsule for traveling, this budget-friendly passport wallet makes a useful addition for all types of travelers. Although the wallet comes at a lower price, it doesn’t lack durability and quality of materials. The PU faux leather case comes in a variety of neutral and bright colors, and it has sleek embossed wording on the front. The case opens up to reveal tons of organizational features for one passport, four credit cards, two SIM cards, and a slip pocket for cash. All of the pockets make it easy to grab travel documents quickly and the larger case keeps everything safe from damage during transit. The wallet is on the bigger side, so it might not fit in smaller purses , but it should fit in a backpack or personal item without any issues.

Best Organization

Baphity genuine leather passport holder.

There are a variety of slip and zippered pockets available.

The card slots can be tight at first.

This genuine leather passport wallet is the best option for travelers prioritizing organization. Designed to store a passport, vaccine card, cash coins, boarding passes, and SIM cards, the wallet is bursting with pockets to efficiently organize items. After we filled it with travel documents, we were impressed with how slim and compact the wallet remained. The leather material is high-quality and durable, and we think the wallet has an excellent value for the construction and price point. We ran into slight issues with the card slots being a bit tight at first, but the material loosened up with more use, which made it easier to pull the cards in and out quickly.

Best AirTag-compatible

Normest airtag travel wallet.

  • Capacity 4.5 /5

The wallet has a designated pocket for storing an Apple AirTag for tracking and locating.

It has a smaller capacity.

Tracking devices can be a game-changer if your luggage gets lost, so we recommend this AirTag-compatible wallet. While the AirTag is sold separately, the wallet does come with a secure slot on the outside to discreetly store the tracking device. The genuine leather material is sleek and soft, and the wallet has a slim design that makes it easy to place it in a back pocket or small bag. It can fit a passport, three credit cards, and some cash before running out of room, so if you’re looking for a spacious wallet, this isn’t the best option. However, sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, so this is a great option for AirTag enthusiasts .

Most Stylish

Away the passport wallet.

It's compact enough to fit inside any sling bag, fanny pack, and even some pant pockets.

It's a bit small and really only fits your passport and a few cards.

This compact passport wallet has a slip pocket on the front for a passport and the side opens up to reveal several credit card slots and a bit of room for cash or a plane ticket. While the side pocket doesn't have a zipper, it is tight enough that all of our items felt secure and nothing moved when we shook the wallet vigorously. We love that the small size means you can fit this passport wallet in any bag and even some pant or coat pockets for quick access. We used this throughout six flights and it was never a hassle to get the passport in and out of the case, even while in a hurry. The black leather is very sleek and feels high-quality and hasn't scratched at all throughout our months of travels. For Away fans looking for a passport wallet to complete your matching style set, this is an absolute essential.

Other Passport Wallets We Liked

There were several passport wallets that almost made our list of winners, but we ran into some slight issues during testing.

Royce Vaccine Card and Passport Wallet : The wallet has a simple and functional design, but the price is fairly high for the smaller capacity and lack of extra organizational features.

Walnew AirTag Passport Holder : It has plenty of room to fit all necessary travel documents and it comes with an AirTag leash, but we liked that the other tracking device-compatible wallet we tried holds the tracker more discreetly.

We researched and selected 16 passport wallets to test out while traveling and in everyday scenarios. From busy TSA security lines to shopping and sightseeing, we made sure the best wallets make it easy to pull out passports, credit cards, IDs, and cash when you’re in a hurry. We paid close attention to the capacity and noted how efficient the organizational features are for storing essential travel documents. Since travel can take a toll on luggage and accessories, we judged the overall quality of the materials and stitchwork to gauge the longevity of each wallet.

Tips for Buying a Passport Wallet

Check the dimensions of the wallet.

Passports from around the world feature the same design and size, but you’ll still want to make sure a passport wallet fits your size needs. Some wallets are designed to just be slightly larger than a passport and others will be large enough to fit the length of a boarding pass. It depends on the space you’ll have in a bag, pocket, or backpack, so you’ll want to consider how to store the wallet while traveling before making the purchase.

Decide how many compartments you need

Passport wallets are typically designed to hold a passport and a few credit cards, but some are equipped with more organizational features. The bigger the wallet, the more room and storage options there will be for multiple passports, credit cards, cash, and boarding passes. Extra features to look for include interior zippered pockets for coins, SIM card holders, and plastic window sleeves for IDs or vaccine cards.

Look for additional security features

Sometimes it’s better to be safe than sorry, so you may want to consider getting a passport wallet with an AirTag holder (AirTags are usually sold separately) to track the wallet in case it goes missing. Other security measures can include a wrap-around zipper to ensure passports and credit cards are secure and layers of RFID-blocking fabric to prevent cyber pick-pocketing.

Security and customs lines can be stressful, so it’s important to have your passport and other necessary documents out of any wallets or cases and ready to go. This will save time and make it easier to hand the documents over to an agent to speed up the process and eliminate unnecessary stress while traveling.

Radio frequency identification or RFID is technology commonly used in credit cards and passports to locate information and data quickly. It is possible to steal data from RFID documents, but there are some passport wallets with a fabric layer to block radio waves from transmitting. Although it’s uncommon for data to be stolen via RFID, the layer of fabric offers extra security and is designed to prevent criminals from taking information while traveling.
