You can always expect some magic from Disney, and there is no exception when sailing on Disney Cruise Line. Although its fleet is small, it offers a high-end, family-friendly experience for guests. Here’s a quick overview of Disney Cruise Line’s key features.

Cabin types: Disney Cruise Line offers all the usual cabin types, including inside, oceanview, verandah and concierge-level rooms . Disney Cruise Line’s cabins are larger than average and designed for families, with split bathrooms and privacy curtains. Their largest rooms can accommodate up to seven guests. 

Main U.S. routes: Disney has several departure points from within the United States, including options from San Diego, New York City, Miami, and Galveston, Texas. However, its most frequent departures are from Port Canaveral in Brevard County, Florida, to the Bahamas and the Caribbean or from Vancouver, British Columbia to Alaska.

Disney cruises tend to be more expensive than the average cruise. Currently, for example, the cheapest cruise departing from Port Canaveral is a three-night trip to the Bahamas, which costs $1,958 for two guests.

And you’ll pay more to take a "special occasion" Disney cruise. The same three-night Bahamas cruise sailing during Disney's Silver Anniversary at Sea starts at $2,345 for two guests.

When it comes to timing, standard logic applies. The high season will cost more, especially during holidays and the summer break.

The cheapest rate we found — the previously-mentioned $1,958 — is for a cruise in late January, a time when those with school-aged children might have trouble getting away. Meanwhile, the most expensive period for this cruise takes place over the Christmas holiday and rings in at $3,737 for an inside stateroom.

For all destinations, if you’d like to save money, avoid peak periods and search all available dates to find the lowest rates . This is true even on less popular cruises, such as those sailing up to Alaska .

The cheapest cost for two guests to Alaska from Vancouver is $2,983 in mid-September, while the same cruise will cost you $4,607 if you sail over the Fourth of July holiday.

One-way positioning cruises — that is, those that end in a different location from where they started — are often much cheaper per night than standard round-trip cruises.

What’s included

Disney cruises are more inclusive than most cruises. You don’t, for example, need to pay extra for soft drinks on a Disney cruise like you would on Norwegian Cruise Line . You’re also entitled to complimentary room service 24/7, unlike on Virgin Voyages, where you'll be charged a $5 fee for each delivery.

The Disney Wish is the newest Disney Cruise Line ship and certainly its best. It just launched in the summer of 2022. Among its many amenities, guests can find the first-ever Disney attraction at sea. It’s a 760-foot water slide filled with show scenes, lighting, music and more that touches down into a lazy river.

The Disney Wish also has dedicated areas themed for "Frozen," the Marvel Universe and "Star Wars."

In addition, the Disney Wish has all the regular amenities you’d expect on a Disney cruise, including live entertainment, pools and spacious staterooms.

Disney Cruise Line does not offer free Wi-Fi. Instead, it has three levels of packages from which to choose:

Stay Connected: $10 per day for the entire cruise or $12 per day for a 24-hour period.

Basic Surf: $20 per day for the entire cruise or $24 per day for a 24-hour period.

Premium Surf: $30 per day for the entire cruise or $36 per day for a 24-hour period.

These packages are available on the Disney Wish, Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream. The Disney Wonder still operates on the old data-usage Wi-Fi packages.

Most of your daily expenses, including your food and non-alcoholic beverages, are included when sailing on a Disney cruise. However, if you’d like specialty drinks or alcohol, you’ll need to pay extra. Gratuities are not included, and Disney Cruise Line's recommended tip is a minimum of $14.50 per guest, per night.

Disney Cruise Line doesn’t offer the standard drink package other cruise lines offer. Drink packages allow you to pay a flat-rate price and drink as much alcohol as you’d like.

Instead, you’ll either pay per drink or purchase bundled quantities onboard. It’s also possible to purchase a specialty beer mug at the pub onboard, which can then be refilled across the ship. Much like Disney’s popcorn buckets, your beer mugs entitle you to cheaper refills on all your beer.

With Disney launching its largest ship yet , the Disney Wish , it seems a better time than ever to compare these cruise lines. So, how does Disney Cruise Line stack up to other major players like Carnival and Royal Caribbean? And where does the Disney Wish fit in with all this? Let’s find out.

Let’s start with the basics. Though Disney is a giant in the global entertainment industry, Disney Cruise Line is a relatively niche brand in the cruise world. The smallest of the three we’re talking about today (with just four existing ships and the coming Wish), what really sets Disney Cruise Line apart is, well, Disney .

Carnival has a different, more casual approach to cruising across its 23 ship fleet. The atmosphere aboard a Carnival cruise is known to be extremely laidback and the going rates tend to be the most budget-friendly of the three lines by far.

Now, let’s get into the details.

Royal Caribbean has the largest ships in its fleet with Carnival closing the gap and Disney trailing behind — though the Wish will take Disney closer to its competitors in size.

Royal Caribbean

As we mentioned, Royal Caribbean has some of the largest passenger ships in the world. The Wonder of the Seas is currently the largest cruise ship globally and all five of the Oasis-class vessels also sit at the top of the list. The smaller ships accommodate around 1,600 passengers with the Wonder of the Seas accommodating almost 7,000 passengers.

Carnival has long trailed behind Royal Caribbean when it comes to ship size but with the launch of its latest ship, the Mardi Gras, it’s done some catching up. Smaller Carnival ships carry around 2,600 passengers and the Mardi Gras has a competitive capacity of approximately 2,500 passengers.

Disney’s ships are MUCH smaller than those of its competitors. Currently sailing, the smaller ships carry around 1,700 passengers and the larger ships carry around 2,500 passengers.

Itineraries.

All three of the cruise lines offer varied itineraries, but Royal Caribbean sails to the most locations and to some parts of the world that Carnival and Disney do not.

Royal Caribbean’s itineraries include popular destinations like the Bahamas, Caribbean, Mediterranean, and Alaska . The line has been known to have as many as seven ships cruising in Europe during a given summer season compared to one from Disney and three from Carnival.

Beyond that, Royal Caribbean sales across the globe with itineraries featuring destinations in Asia, Australia, and South America .

With Carnival’s budget focus, the majority of the cruises sail out of the United States, making it easier for the target audience to reach embarkation ports by car. The majority of itineraries sail to the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexico with fewer itineraries sailing in Europe, Alaska, and Hawaii .

With fewer ships, Disney is more regularly limited but does have a tendency to break out. The line always sails to the Bahamas and the Caribbean (making it easier for passengers to combine a vacation with Disney World and a cruise) with seasonal sailings to Alaska .

The Disney Magic

Other destinations vary year by year but have included Mexico, the Mediterranean, the Baltic, and Canada with New England . With its initial launch, the Wish is only set to sail out of Port Canaveral to the Bahamas .

Cabin sizes are pretty similar across the three lines although Carnival actually has the largest base inside cabins. The general vibe of the cabins is also fairly different from line to line.

Royal Caribbean’s cabins typically measure around 180 square feet , not including the balcony and there are a variety of higher-level options and suites as well. Decorations-wise, the general feel is elegant, more akin to what you might find at an upscale hotel.

Some more unique features include floor-to-ceiling screens in inside rooms that project real-time exterior views and unique or quirky room offerings . One ship has a stateroom that’s view is blocked by the Ben & Jerry’s sign; so, naturally, it’s decorated with a cow theme and the residing passengers are treated to free ice cream daily on the cruise.

Carnival’s staterooms typically measure around 185 square feet , not including the balcony. Of course, there are specialty cabins and suite offerings with this line too. The decor tends to be more colorful than Royal Caribbean, but less swanky.

Disney’s rooms are, on average, about 25% larger than standard rooms on other lines with the average standard cabin measuring around 205 square feet , not including the balcony. These rooms also come with Disney touches , and on the Dream and Fantasy, inside rooms have “Magical Portholes” that show real-time views with animated characters . More luxury rooms are available as well.

Royal Caribbean has by far the more unique activities with a focus on innovative experiences. On the other hand, Carnival has a more casual and party-friendly vibe, and Disney goes all out with Disney-fied activities and a variety of pools.

When Royal Caribbean calls themselves “innovative,” they mean it. This line brings a wild assortment of activities and the sheer size of the ships means they can pack a LOT of interesting recreation onboard. Royal ships have been known to feature surf simulators, zip-lining, ice skating, bumper cars, and high-thrill activities.

On some ships, the variety of activities is so great that it’s literally impossible to experience it all in seven days. Because there’s so much to do, these ships trump Carnival and Disney when it comes to family-geared offerings too. Basically, if you want your cruise to feel a bit like it has an onboard amusement park or mall, Royal Caribbean comes the closest.

Carnival’s activities are more standard with a focus on pool parties and classic cruise activities. Some newer ships feature more innovative activities, like a coaster at sea, but Carnival is all about some good old-fashioned fun.

Where Carnival really shines is the nightlife. Unlike Royal Caribbean and Disney, Carnival puts a real focus on getting the party going and KEEPING it going at nightlife venues around the ships.

As we’ve mentioned, Disney’s real stand-out factor is the fact that many of the activities are Disney activities. You can meet your favorite princesses, join in on pirate days, and play games featuring your favorite Disney characters. Disney also makes a priority of offering pools geared to all ages with more interesting features than your standard pools and hot tubs. Disney is also the only one of the three lines that does not offer gambling onboard — though Disney is looking into sports betting in other segments of the company.

Disney Cruise Line

The Wish is expanding on this further with more innovative offerings like the Disney Uncharted Adventure AR Experience and Disney’s first attraction at sea, the AquaMouse water coaster .

Reviews tend to agree that Disney stands out when it comes to dining with a fairly inclusive, rotational program. Carnival cruises are also pretty inclusive when it comes to dining with a mix of premium restaurants and included restaurants and a focus on casual fare. Royal Caribbean is widely considered the least inclusive with more specialty restaurants and celebrity concepts than other lines — for an added fee.

Royal Caribbean caters more to a foodie audience with diverse specialty restaurants, a wide variety of dining venues, and celebrity concepts . These ships also have family-friendly spots and a more culturally diverse cuisine than the other two cruise lines.

On the other hand, the wide selections of specialty restaurants could be a disappointment for those who like the all-inclusive nature of cruising as many of these come at a premium .

Carnival cruises offer more options to passengers so you can pick fixed or flexible dining  depending on what would be the right option for you. These ships offer some celebrity concepts, but fewer upscale options. Unlike Royal Caribbean, the basic dining options are typically well-liked, though there are specialty options available as well.

Disney cruises feature a rotational dining system where guests are assigned a dining time and waiter and they eat with the same group at the same time each night in one of the three main dining rooms on a pre-set schedule. Additionally, there are a few anytime options included and two specialty restaurants for an added fee .

Palo Brunch

Even without paying extra for food, you still get to try multiple table-service restaurants as part of the rotational dining. Additionally, unlike the other two lines, Disney does not charge for soda or room service . Our own team members who have taken a number of cruises note that the dining is what really stands out for Disney .

The Disney Wish will be no different with three rotational restaurants: 1923, Worlds of Marvel, and Arendelle: A Frozen Dining Adventure .

It will also offer two specialty restaurants and a number of casual dining locations, lounges, and a sweets shop .

Entertainment.

Entertainment varies pretty heavily across the three cruise lines. Royal Caribbean has a focus on variety shows and Broadway-scale shows, Carnival is more about the party scene, and Disney has a Broadway focus as well but with the Disney twist.

Six of Royal Caribbean’s ships feature Broadway or West End musicals on every sailing . Beyond that, unique variety shows like water-based high dive and acrobatics performances and music and dance shows in high-tech performance venues are the standards.

Carnivals entertainment is typically found in its nightlife offerings with DJs, parties, piano bar concepts, and more. Carnival is not super known for sweeping stage productions; the fun is found more on deck and in the bars.

Disney’s entertainment features Broadway-scale performances of classic Disney stories plus performances of original stories for the cruise ships . Beyond that, the ships are all licensed to screen Disney movies — including those that are still in theaters on land .

The Little Mermaid

The Wish will continue the trend with Broadway-style shows at the Walt Disney Theatre: The Little Mermaid , Disney Seas the Adventure , and Disney’s Aladdin: A Musical Spectacular . A team member noted that the cohesive stories in Disney cruise shows are an awesome perk for Disney fans, compared to the more medley style on Royal Caribbean.

Private islands.

All three of the cruise lines have access to their own private island and many sailings feature a stop at these spots. Royal Caribbean will take you to Perfect Day Island at CocoCay, Carnival swings by Half Moon Cay, and Disney stops at Castaway Cay.

Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day Island is an absolute show-stopper and is widely considered the best of the cruise lines’ private islands . There are sandy beaches, theme park rides, water slides, and other wild opportunities like riding in a helium balloon above the island .

Additionally, Perfect Day Island just got a $200 million overhaul adding a major water park , and an exclusive private beach club is coming this year. One of our team members who’s been to both Perfect Day Island and Castaway Cay said the two were about on par with one another — but she went before the $200 million plus-ups.

Carnival’s island, Half Moon Cay has more basic offerings with a large white sand beach and activities such as watersports, boat trips, swimming, and snorkeling .

Disney’s Castaway Cay also has a more traditional cruise experience with beaches, water play areas, walking trails, dining locations, a snorkeling lagoon, character appearances, and more !

Quality for families.

All three of the cruise lines offer a solid family focus to passengers. Disney is widely considered the most family-geared because of the brand, but Royal Caribbean and Carnival do a lot to optimize for families as well.

Royal Caribbean is an awesome option for adults and families alik e — though maybe not for those looking for a quiet getaway. Additionally, these ships offer drop-off daycare for babies and toddlers (a rare cruise offering) and offer activities for kids of all ages .

Carnival cruises are positioned as bringing a family-friendly approach to cruising and are often mentioned as a great option for first-time travelers and those with children . This line isn’t, however, the best for those looking for a more upscale sailing.

Disney’s staterooms are designed with families in mind — an approach that will continue on the Wish. Additionally, kids tend to resonate with the characters onboard and Disney-themed activities .

Add Star Wars and Marvel-themed play areas and you’ve got a ship kids will love to play on. The Wish continues the line’s trend of offering TONS of kids-only and adults-only activities.

When it comes to pricing for these cruise lines, the three options are fairly different from one another. Carnival is the cheapest with Royal Caribbean typically costing about twice as much and Disney cruises typically costing about four times as much. Whew.

Royal Caribbean is in the middle with moderate fares , however, this line is also known for offering discounts throughout the year . You can typically find reasonable fares on the older ships, just be warned that the newer ships are much pricier. Beyond that, Royal Caribbean has many dining and activity options that cost EXTRA !

Carnival is a budget option with the lowest prices of the three . In fact, the line made a name for itself by providing affordable cruises and most of the dining, entertainment, and activities are included .

Disney cruises are notoriously expensive and the line rarely offers any discounts or promotions. For Disney fans, the Disney “magic” can be worth the price, but for those without a connection to the brand, another line might make more sense.

The Wish is coming in on the pricy side too, with inside cabins starting at $400 per night .

Our team typically ranks Disney Cruise Line above Royal Caribbean and Carnival — but keep in mind, we’re all Disney fans here. Each of the cruise lines has its merits and the right call for you might not be splurging on a Disney cruise just so your ship can be captained by Mickey Mouse.

Carnival, for instance, is hard to beat for those on a tight budget. It’s simply the most affordable. But, you get what you pay for when it comes to experience, and jumping up to Royal Caribbean or Disney could be the move for those who can afford a pricier vacation.

Disney Cruise Line continues its rapid expansion with the reveal of the third Triton-class ship name and theme. The ship will be called the Disney Destiny, be themed after heroes and villains and is scheduled to be delivered in 2025.

The new ship continues Disney’s commitment to its cruise line , which launched the first Triton class ship, the Disney Wish in 2022 and is getting ready to launch a second, the Disney Treasure in December 2024. The cruise line also bought and is currently renovating a partially built ship to be called the Disney Adventure, which will homeport in Singapore. Disney bought the Adventure for a reported $44 million after Genting Cruise Lines fell into administration.

The design theme of Disney Destiny will continue Disney’s legacy of storytelling by drawing inspiration from movies, characters and theme park attractions. According to a press release, “The Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering teams were inspired by the dynamic duality of every great Disney story, where opposing forces of light and dark drive characters to rise to their purpose, when developing the Disney Destiny.”

Those who take a cruise on the ship will be able to enjoy spaces, experiences and entertainment themed around stories like The Lion King , Hercules and One Hundred and One Dalmatians .

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager, Disney Cruise Line in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising as we offer even more ways for families to experience Disney magic and world-class service at sea.”

Home ports, cruise routes, cost and onboard activities are not yet known. Like the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure, there will be plenty of spaces for kids to play and spaces dedicated for adults to enjoy all around the ship. There will also be three main dining rooms that cruisers will rotate through during a sailing.

Cruising Is Back

According to Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), cruising is back in full force as of 2023. This is good news for Disney, who has three new ships debuting before the end of 2025. The 2023 State of the Cruise Industry CLIA report states that 85% of travelers who have cruised plan to cruise again, which is nine percent higher than pre-pandemic levels.

Disney Cruise Line names its newest cruise ship

I t was bound to happen sometime, but Disney Cruise Line waited until its last of three new sister ships to name one Disney Destiny.

The sister ship to Disney Wish, which debuted out of Port Canaveral in 2022 and the soon-to-debut Disney Treasure arriving in Central Florida this December, the third ship in what was originally called the Trident class had its keel laying ceremony Wednesday at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

It won’t start sailing until 2025, and its home port has yet to be named, but among the details revealed for what will be the eighth ship in the cruise line’s fleet was the theme of the vessel, “Heroes & Villains.”

As such, the filigree artwork for the bow will be of Minnie Mouse wearing a superhero-style outfit complete with a cape.

The cruise line said among the characters from which it will mine features on board will be classic Disney animation films, “The Lion King,” “Hercules” and “One Hundred and One Dalmatians.”

Disney of course owns plenty of good vs. evil intellectual property including Star Wars and Marvel.

“The Disney Destiny will celebrate our most legendary Disney stories and characters, bringing them to life in new and exciting ways exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager for the cruise line, in a press release. “As we continue to expand our fleet, the Disney Destiny will further strengthen our position as a leader in family cruising.”

Just like Disney Wish and Treasure, Disney Destiny will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel that’s part of the cruise industry’s efforts to reduce emissions.

All three are the 144,000 gross-ton, 1,254-stateroom vessels but still targeting the 4,000-passenger capacity of its older ships, 2011’s Disney Dream and 2012’s Fantasy. The line’s first ships are the smaller Disney Magic that debuted in 1998 and Disney Wonder in 1999. They come in at 84,000 gross tons with 875 staterooms.

The line also is finishing construction for an Asia-bound cruise ship named Disney Adventure that will be the largest in the fleet at 208,000 gross tons.

Disney Wish became the line’s first new ship in more than a decade. It continues to do short three- and four-night Bahamas sailings while Disney Treasure will pick up seven-night trips to the Caribbean.

Disney Cruise Line unveiled the look for its fifth ship, the Disney Wish, introducing a new design concept.

The vessels motif is enchantment inspired by nearly a century of Disney fairytales. Translating this concept into a design theme, Walt Disney Imagineers have captured the essence of enchantment through three design lenses: fairytale castles forests and animals and spirit of the sea.

Stories represented onboard range from Disney and Pixar to Marvel and Star Wars.

Like other Disney Cruise Line ships, Disney Wish will feature two character art pieces on the hull of each ship. A scrollwork pattern reminiscent of the classic ocean liners of the 1930s will feature Captain Minnie Mouse for the first time. The stern of the vessel will have a custom sculpture Rapunzel. Suspended by her golden tresses, this artistic Disney Princess will appear to be decorating the exterior of the ship with her trusty paintbrush and the help of her chameleon pal, Pascal.

The Grand Hall

The Grand Hall is a fairytale castle-inspired atrium, with Gothic, Baroque and French Rococo design influences including columns, carvings, trimmings and adornments.

New information on the experiences, itineraries and booking dates for the Disney Wish will be revealed on April 29, 2021.

What Happened To Genting Hong Kong

On January 18, Genting Hong Kong filed for winding up the company with the Supreme Court of Bermuda. Genting Hong Kong owns three cruise lines, a shipyard, various resorts, and several casinos worldwide.

It became clear Genting would default on $2.8 billion of financing arrangements in the past weeks. Most of thiswas due to financial arrangementse blocked by the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for debts payments of the companys shipyard MV Werften.

For decades, Israel and Iran have fought a shadow war across the Middle East , trading attacks by land, sea, air and in cyberspace. The barrage of drones and missiles Iran launched at Israel on Saturday — though nearly all were shot down or intercepted — represented a watershed in the conflict.

It was the first time that Iran directly attacked Israel from its own territory, according to Ahron Bregman, a political scientist and expert in Middle East security issues at King’s College in London, who called it a “historic event.”

Iran has largely used foreign proxies such as Lebanon’s Hezbollah militia to strike Israeli interests, while targeted assassinations of Iranian military leaders and nuclear scientists have been a key part of Israel’s strategy. Here is a recent history of the conflict:

August 2019: An Israeli airstrike killed two Iranian-trained militants in Syria, a drone set off a blast near a Hezbollah office in Lebanon and an airstrike in Qaim, Iraq, killed a commander of an Iran-backed Iraqi militia. Israel accused Iran at the time of trying to establish an overland arms-supply line through Iraq and northern Syria to Lebanon, and analysts said the strikes were aimed at stopping Iran and signaling to its proxies that Israel would not tolerate a fleet of smart missiles on its borders.

January 2020: Israel greeted with satisfaction the assassination of Maj. Gen. Qassim Suleimani , the commander of the foreign-facing arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, in an American drone strike in Baghdad.

Iran hit back by attacking two bases in Iraq that housed American troops with a barrage of missiles, wounding about 100 U.S. military personnel .

2021-22: In July 2021, an oil tanker managed by an Israeli-owned shipping company was attacked off the coast of Oman, killing two crew members, according to the company and three Israeli officials. Two of the officials said that the attack appeared to have been carried out by Iranian drones.

Iran did not explicitly claim or deny responsibility, but a state-owned television channel described the episode as a response to an Israeli strike in Syria.

In November 2021, Israel killed Iran’s top nuclear scientist, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh , and followed up with the assassination of a Revolutionary Guards commander, Col. Sayad Khodayee , in May 2022.

December 2023: After Israel’s bombardment of Gaza began in response to the Oct. 7 Hamas-led assault, Iranian-backed militias stepped up their own attacks . And late last year, Iran accused Israel of killing a high-level military figure, Brig. Gen. Sayyed Razi Mousavi , in a missile strike in Syria.

A senior adviser to the Revolutionary Guards, General Mousavi was described as having been a close associate of General Suleimani and was said to have helped oversee the shipment of arms to Hezbollah. Israel, adopting its customary stance, declined to comment directly on whether it was behind General Mousavi’s death.

January 2024: An explosion in a suburb of Beirut, Lebanon, killed Saleh al-Arouri , a Hamas leader, along with two commanders from that group’s armed wing, the first assassination of a top Hamas official outside the West Bank and Gaza in recent years. Officials from Hamas, Lebanon and the United States ascribed the blast to Israel , which did not publicly confirm involvement.

Hezbollah, which receives major support from Iran, stepped up its assaults on Israel after Mr. al-Arouri’s death. Israel’s military hit back at Hezbollah in Lebanon, killing several of the group’s commanders .

March and April: An Israeli drone strike hit a car in southern Lebanon, killing at least one person. Israel’s military said it had killed the deputy commander of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit. Hezbollah acknowledged the death of a man, Ali Abdulhassan Naim, but did not provide further details.

The same day, airstrikes killed soldiers near Aleppo, northern Syria, in what appeared to be one of the heaviest Israeli attacks in the country in years. The strikes killed 36 Syrian soldiers, seven Hezbollah fighters and a Syrian from a pro-Iran militia, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based group that tracks Syria’s civil war.

Israel’s military did not claim responsibility. But the country’s defense minister, Yoav Gallant, wrote on social media, “We will pursue Hezbollah every place it operates and we will expand the pressure and the pace of the attacks.”

Three days later, strikes on an Iranian Embassy building in Damascus killed three top Iranian commanders and four officers, an attack Iran blamed on Israel.

Israel shoots down missiles and drones after Iran launches unprecedented attack

Booms and air raid sirens sounded across Israel and the occupied West Bank early Sunday morning, after Iran launched dozens of drones and missiles toward Israel, in an attack that marked a major escalation of conflict in the Middle East.

In Washington, President Joe Biden said U.S. forces had helped Israel down "nearly all" the drones and missiles, and pledged to convene allies to develop a unified response.

Israeli military spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said Iran fired more than 300 projectiles at Israel overnight, 99% of which were shot down, the "vast majority". Officials reported minor damage to a military base in southern Israel and one injury to a 10-year-old child, who was reported to be in critical condition.

"We will do everything we need, everything, to defend the state of Israel," Hagari said. He added that some of the launches came from Iraq and Yemen.

How Iran and Israel became archenemies

The Israeli War Cabinet planned to meet at lunchtime. In a statement Sunday, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the U.S. does "not seek escalation" of the conflict.

G7 leaders are meeting on Sunday afternoon to coordinate on a diplomatic response to Iran's attack, and engage with officials across the Middle East. The United Nations Security Council is is also set to meet, after Israel requested the council condemn Iran's attack, and designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization.

Iran had vowed to retaliate after an airstrike on an Iranian consulate in Syria earlier this month killed seven Iranian military officials . It is the first time that Iran has launched an attack on Israel from Iranian soil, Israeli officials said.

U.S. forces in the region were active in shooting down drones, a U.S. defense official said. And interceptions by Israel's anti-missile defense system lit up the skies over populous areas including Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

The Israeli emergency medical service Magen David Adom reported that a 10-year-old child had been struck in the head by shrapnel in the area of Arad, a town near the southwestern edge of the Dead Sea. Paramedics also treated about 20 people who suffered from anxiety or minor injuries experienced while seeking shelter, the service said.

Saturday's attack, which was first announced by Israeli officials around 4 p.m. ET, was staged in waves and took hours to reach Israel, officials said.

In a statement broadcast on Iranian state television, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps described the attack as a "large-scale military operation" against multiple targets inside Israel.

In a post on the social media site X, Iran's permanent mission to the United Nations wrote that the attack was a direct response to the strike on the consulate and that "the matter can be deemed concluded."

Following Tehran's overnight drone and missile attack on Sunday, Iran warned Israel of a larger attack on its territory should it retaliate, adding that Washington has been warned not to back Israeli military action.

"Our response will be much larger than tonight's military action if Israel retaliates against Iran," armed forces chief of staff Major General Mohammad Bagheri told state TV, adding that Tehran warned Washington that any backing of Israeli retaliation would result in U.S. bases being targeted.

The U.S. military was directly involved in the response, a senior U.S. defense official said. "In accordance with our ironclad commitment to Israel's security, U.S. forces in the region continue to shoot down Iranian-launched drones targeting Israel. Our forces remain postured to provide additional defensive support and to protect U.S. forces operating in the region," the official said.

Israelis were urged to take shelter

Officials in Israel had explicitly urged residents of Nevatim, Dimona and Eilat — three cities in Israel's Negev desert region — and people in the northern occupied Golan Heights to take shelter. A major Israeli air base is located near Nevatim, and an Israeli nuclear research facility is located in Dimona.

Airspace over Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon was closed late Saturday, while some airlines announced the cancellation of some flights and the re-routing of others due to the attacks. Israel and Jordan reopened their airspace on Sunday morning.

Hezbollah, the Lebanon-based militant group, said that it had staged its own attack by launching dozens of rockets toward an Israeli military base in the Golan early Sunday.

In a Saturday night address to Israelis, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country was ready for "any scenario, both defensively and offensively."

"We have determined a clear principle: Whoever harms us, we will harm them. We will defend ourselves against any threat and will do so level-headedly and with determination," Netanyahu said.

After striking throughout the Middle East, Iran's proxies now become the targets

President Biden monitored the attack from the Situation Room alongside top defense and diplomatic officials. In anticipation of the attack, he had cut short a trip to Delaware in order to return to the White House.

Afterward, he spoke with Netanyahu and said Israel had "demonstrated a remarkable capacity to defend against and defeat even unprecedented attacks – sending a clear message to its foes that they cannot effectively threaten the security of Israel."

"At my direction, to support the defense of Israel, the U.S. military moved aircraft and ballistic missile defense destroyers to the region over the course of the past week" the president said. "Thanks to these deployments and the extraordinary skill of our servicemembers, we helped Israel take down nearly all of the incoming drones and missiles."

Iran blames Israel for an earlier attack on its consulate

The attack on Israel comes four days after Iran's leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed retaliation for an April 1 strike on an Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital of Damascus. Iran said the strike killed seven members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, including two generals, and it blamed Israel for the attack. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied being behind the attack, though the Pentagon said Israel was responsible.

By Saturday, as anticipation had grown over a possible retaliation, Israeli officials warned residents living in communities near Gaza and the Lebanon border to limit the size of gatherings and to work indoors or within reach of a shelter. Schools across Israel were closed through Monday.

Iranian officials accuse Israel of a deadly attack on Iran's consulate in Syria

U.S. defense officials told NPR Saturday that the U.S. military had moved assets around the region in anticipation of an attack, including aircraft, and had shored up defensive positions for forces in the region. The top U.S. military commander in the Middle East, Gen. Michael Kurilla, arrived in Israel Thursday to coordinate with the Israeli military.

In a post on Telegram on Sunday, Hamas expressed support for Iran's attack, calling it a "natural right" and a deserved response to the Israeli strike on an Iranian diplomatic compound in Syria this month. The militant group called on Arab and Islamic nations to continue their backing in its fight against Israel, according to the Washington Post.

Also on Sunday, a statement by Israel's intelligence agency Mossad announced that Hamas had rejected the latest hostage deal outline, which would have led to a six week pause in fighting between Israel and Hamas. They blamed the lapse in negotiations directly on Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

The attack is a large escalation of hostilities in the region

The strike and retaliation represent an escalation of conflict in the region that many officials worldwide had expressed worry about ever since the outbreak of war between Israel and the Gaza-based militant group Hamas on Oct. 7, the day Hamas led an attack on Israel that left some 1,200 people dead.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said on Saturday that he condemned Iran's attack and was "deeply alarmed about the very real danger of a devastating region-wide escalation."

Egypt's foreign affairs ministry called Iran's attack a "dangerous escalation" and in a Saturday night statement urged "the exercise of the utmost restraint to spare the region and its people further factors of instability and tension." Jordan's Prime Minister said on Sunday any escalation in the region would lead to "dangerous paths", while United Arab Emirates foreign ministry called for the exercise of the utmost restraint to avoid dangerous repercussions.

Iran has long supplied Hamas with funds and weapons . The White House has not directly linked Iran to the Oct. 7 attack.

In the six months since Oct. 7, Israel has bombarded Gaza and conducted a devastating ground invasion that has left much of the territory in ruins and more than 33,000 Palestinians dead, according to Palestinian health officials.

The last time Iran launched a similar attack was in 2020 , when it fired ballistic missiles at the Ain al-Asad Air Base in Iraq, wounding dozens of U.S. troops, in retaliation for the killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani by a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad.
