Traveling is all about getting outside your comfort zone and tasting the local flavors – which don’t have to stop at food and drink – and being receptive to things you’d might not encounter at home.

Once considered taboo, dating apps have become the ultimate travel essential, especially if you’re hitting the road solo . A fast-track to plugging into the hometown crowd, they’ll help save time you might otherwise spend taking a blind chance on a nightlife scene, and open you up to a subset of people you’d otherwise never meet.

Connecting with locals can help you experience a destination more deeply than you would if you were charting your own path. From underground dance parties and hidden watering holes to home-cooked meals and language exchange, you could make new friends, go on fun dates, have hot hook ups, and maybe even find real love – anything is possible with a sense of adventure, an open mind, and a handful of best practices.

The different dating apps

Pick the platform that best suits you, and install it ahead of your trip so you can hit the ground running when you arrive.

With users in more than 190 countries, Tinder is among the most popular dating platforms worldwide. It offers the ability to change your location so you can browse in any city with its “Passport” feature, available with a paid “Tinder Plus” subscription. This feature is well worth the money (nevermind the ageist pricing: US$9.99 per month for the under 30 set and $19.99 per month for those older), as it allows you to get a head start with swiping so you can start conversations with matches and tee up plans before you’ve even packed your suitcase.

For many women, being bombarded by creepster solicitations can be overwhelming, if not downright repelling from dating altogether. Women-focused Bumble puts the control in the thumbs of its female users, who must initiate contact with matches within 24 hours before the connection disappears. And the guys are hotter than on Tinder – any woman, anywhere, can corroborate.

For some, a handful of photos and a 500-character profile doesn’t cut it when it comes to determining a suitable match. OKCupid features more robust profiles, a categorized search function – you can easily set your location to the destination that you’re headed to – and in-depth questionnaires that feed into an algorithm, which determines a percentage-based compatibility score between matches.

LGBTQIA+-specific apps

While the above apps are all LGBTQIA+ friendly, Grindr has long been the go-to for gay men. Users who subscribe to the “XTRA” service ($29.99/mo) can use the “Explore” feature to search for matches in any location and lockdown dates in advance; just be conscious of the customs and laws surrounding homosexuality wherever you’re visiting – authorities in some countries have been known to target, track and arrest gay men by using the app.

Grindr touts itself as a space that includes all queer, trans and non-binary people and is open to women, but their presence is virtually nil. HER was created for lesbian, bi and queer women, and to ensure that the platform is safe for its intended demographic, users can report profiles of straight men or couples on the prowl for threesomes.

Couples in search of a guest star while on holiday should try Feeld – which appeals to anybody with an open mind, partnered and single alike. From swinging and polyamory to kink and radically transparent one night stands, it’s a sex-positive platform where anything goes. Feeld also allows you to change your location to one of their “Cores” – major cities across the world with a high number of users, such as New York , São Paulo , Melbourne , Paris and Singapore .

Getting it right

There are a few things to think about to ensure the best experience when using dating apps on your travels.

Perfect your profile

To optimize your profile, list where you’re from, the dates you’ll be on the ground, and a few things you’re into, like a type of food or activity; you can even make a call for recommendations. And if you aren’t down to hook up, do state so – people are presumptuous no matter where you are in the world.

Keep the text brief, punchy and digestible. Post up-to-date photos that show you and your interests clearly, so matches can use them as a conversation starter – a handstand photo in front of Machu Picchu will have more people sliding into your DMs than a pixelated group shot in a bar where you’re barely discernible amongst your friends.

Be intentional

It’s important to go into this experience knowing exactly what you want. A tour guide? A dinner companion? A language teacher? A cross-cultural romance ? Many locals are happy and proud to show off their hometowns, so be up-front about what you’re looking for when communicating.

You’ll likely find that people are intrigued by you, a mysterious foreigner with an interesting accent, and aren’t put off by the prospect of a short-term connection.

Swipe strategically

If you’re staying in a big city, keep your location setting within a five-mile radius. You may also opt to adjust the age range to narrow it down to people who more closely fit your ideal. Time is of the essence, so don’t be surprised if your match wants to go from zero to 100 – if they swiped knowing that you’re only around for a short time, odds are they’re down to skip the small talk and get straight to the point.

If that's what you want too, then keep the conversation snappy and don’t let it linger without some move to action for too long – ideally, you should exchange numbers within a couple of scrolls down your screen.

Take it to text

WhatsApp is the most commonly used texting app across the world and works across operating systems and on wi-fi, so be sure to download it if you don’t already use it. When communicating with a match, be upbeat and candid – but also direct and politely firm.

Ask for last names, more photos, or links to social media profiles, and internet stalk away if you want a better sense of who they are. Anybody who refuses most likely has something to hide. If it eases your mind to have a phone call or video chat before meeting, don’t hesitate to initiate it.

Respect customs

When it comes to dating, cultural norms vary around the world. Be sensitive to customs around courting and remain aware of what’s socially acceptable when it comes to public displays of affection. This especially applies to the LGBTQIA+ community, as some 70 countries criminalize homosexuality. Know the laws of country you’re planning to visit ( this map is a good place to start ).

Tinder users will find that a travel alert pops up when the app is opened in a country where LGBTQIA+ status equates to a crime, and they must opt in to be shown in these locations. Grindr issues warnings to users as well, and the app is completely banned in Turkey, Indonesia, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Swipe safely

Common sense, clear boundaries and direct communication are critical when swiping. You can always unmatch the moment you feel uncomfortable or change your mind. Remember that these are perfect strangers and you don’t owe anyone an explanation – ever. Never share exactly where you’re staying and avoid letting on that you don’t know your way around.

The first date

For a first date, meet in a busy, public place during the daytime, no further than a mile from your accommodation. If you drink or use substances, know your limits and never take your eyes off your drink. Carry enough money to pay your own way and get back to your accommodation. Trust your instincts and don’t feel pressured to do anything you don’t want to do; if a date starts to take a strange turn, bow out immediately.

Always make sure someone knows where you are. If you’re traveling solo, leave a hand-written note in your room, stating where you’re headed and who you’re with, or tell the receptionist. If that feels awkward, shoot a text with your date’s contact details, profile and message screenshots, or your live geolocation to a friend back home.

If you find yourself in a seedy nightlife scenario where your date knows every single person working there, stay conscious of shifty motives or a ruse. In some countries, it’s not uncommon to swipe on matches who turn out to be sex workers in pursuit of clients.

When going the route of hooking up, enthusiastic, informed, and ongoing consent is imperative. Be direct about your expectations and intentions, moreso if there’s a language barrier – don’t be timid about using a translator on your phone to communicate clearly.

Temper your expectations

Cast the net wide and don’t get too hung up on one person or experience. When deciding on activities, it’s cool to mention some things your list, but go with the flow and let your date make suggestions, too.

Splitting the bill can help keep any expectations in check for both people, but if someone goes the distance to show you around, picking up a meal or a round of drinks is a nice gesture.

While true love can certainly come from this experience, if you keep your focus on making meaningful human connections, having lighthearted fun, and experiencing the destination in an alternative way, you’ll go home with fond memories of new friends, steamy stories for your homegirls or lads, and maybe even a new long-distance love to lure you right back.

The 5 Best Dating Apps for Travelers

Daniel Kim Photography/Stocksy

As the popularity of dating apps continues to rise, the stigma surrounding them has declined dramatically—so much so that dating apps are being used for more than just the traditional date. Solo travelers are swiping left and right to connect with like-minded adventurers or in-the-know locals who can show them a good time off the beaten path in their hometown. The best dating apps for travelers are like having your very own tour guide who knows where all the hip bars, hot spots, and must-see tourist attractions are. For those who wish to keep things platonic and avoid romantic expectations, just be straightforward and honest from the beginning about your intentions. The same safety rules that you follow at home apply overseas.

Always meet in a public place and never do anything you don't feel comfortable doing.

Bumble BFF  is a great app for solo travelers who really want to share their experiences with someone else. You can download the app and start connecting with people at your final destination. The app allows you to chat with fellow adventurers in the same place as you or befriend some of the locals who can show you around their hometown and host a unique tour.

You never know who you'll meet while traveling, but you will with  TourBar on your phone. The digital matchmaking app lets you make friends (or find dates) ahead of time by connecting you with other travelers or locals before your trip. Say you were planning a trip to Glastonbury Festival but your friend canceled on you—well, TourBar can help you find out who's going and help you meet up with them when you're there.

This app takes the solitude out of travel and is specifically targeted to travelers looking for friends or a personal local guide to explore together. Simply download the app and start finding others who will be there too. Who you match up with or not is entirely up to you. Once you accept, you can chat within the app and start making plans.

There is something so liberating about traveling solo, but there may be moments you wished there was someone beside you to share in the sights and sounds or partake in a delicious local meal. Thankfully, apps like Airtripp allow you to find someone who's also a solo traveler in the same city or a local.

And don't worry about your language skills either. This app also sends translated messages, and you can even send gifts.

As one of the world's largest apps for meeting new people, Skout can join you with millions of people around the world. You can connect with anyone anywhere using this app. This is especially handy when you're on the other side of the world and you want to explore the neighborhood but can't speak the language. Skout brings people together, whether it's a concert in New York, a hike in Hawaii, or a local bar in Barcelona.

As you're meeting people on your travels IRL, you'll need a way to keep in touch without using tons of data. Enter WhatsApp , a free messaging and calling service that's used all over the world. All you need is an internet connection—you'll then be able to chat with your international pal and even drop pins on Google maps so it's easy to meet up at the local café.

Whether you travel frequently for work or pleasure, the best international dating apps are a great way to build connections while you’re on the go. Opening yourself up to dating internationally can make for some rich life experiences and romantic connections .

We tapped relationship therapist LaTonya Washington, LICSW for helpful insight on how to date while traveling and which apps are best for international dating. Keep reading to learn our experience testing them for ourselves and how to pick the best one for you.

  • Best for marriage: eHarmony
  • Best for introverts: Match
  • Best queer-friendly: OkCupid
  • Best for women dating men: Bumble
  • Best for professionals: The League
  • Largest user base: Tinder
  • Best for serious relationships: Hinge

Check out our full eHarmony review .

There’s a reason this dating site has been around for so long. Your experience begins with a comprehensive 80-question quiz, which gets into the nitty gritty and helps the app provide more relevant matches.

While some users don’t love that you really have to pay to get any real benefits from eHarmony, it’s a great way to weed out anyone who isn’t serious. One of the best dating apps for serious relationships , eHarmony comes recommended by Washington for those seeking marriage.

After filling out your profile, eHarmony takes over the heavy lifting by using an algorithm to pair you with matches and provide a compatibility score. You’ll know lots about someone before even contacting them, which is particularly great when you’re considering meeting someone in another country.

Pros & cons

  • Profiles are comprehensive
  • Personality test is detailed
  • Ability to see who viewed your profile
  • Takes time to set up
  • Very limited capabilities with free membership

Our tester's experience

According to our tester , "the website is pretty simple to navigate after that, and you can search for people to match—who are in the preferences you choose. When you visit someone's profile, you get a compatibility score, which represents how your compatibility quiz results align. It was definitely interesting to scan through and see if they're as empathetic as I am, if they're more emotional or logical, or if they are adventurous. I could see how knowing some of those aspects would make me more or less interested in someone. And if you pay, you can also see people whose profiles you visited and vice versa."

Meeting someone online can be an intimidating experience ( especially if you’re shy or introverted )—and dating internationally is even more nerve-wracking for many. Match asks users to fill out in-depth personality quizzes and profiles, helping users really get to know potential matches before even starting a chat with them.

What’s more, you have the option to be paired with a dating expert, have one-on-ones with them, and take advantage of their advice to ease into online dating. You can even attend live online events if that makes you feel more comfortable than jumping into one-on-one dates.

  • One-on-ones with dating experts
  • Live online events
  • Detailed profiles
  • Expensive if you want all the features
  • Profile takes time to set up

Our testers found even more unique features when testing Match.com, such as the ability to see everyone who has liked you. There’s even a little sidebar called “You’re their type” which will show you users who the algorithm feels you would be good with.

Check out our full Bumble review .

If you’re open-minded when it comes to the kind of relationship you are looking for (a safe bet, if you’re curious about international dating!), Bumble is a great fit. There’s a wide range of people using this dating app for hookups, casual dating, serious relationships, marriage, and even friendships.

Most Bumble users are quite straightforward about what they are looking for exactly, since it’s one of the questions you answer when setting up your profile. This is a huge plus when it comes to international dating, since it’s best to go into it knowing your (and the other person’s) intentions.

Bumble is largely known for the fact that in heterosexual dating, women must message men first. The app enables and empowers women to initiate conversations, so that they can be the ones to set the tone of the chat.

  • Great for making friends when traveling
  • Many free features
  • Large user base
  • One week membership option
  • Some may not like that women have to start the conversation
  • Free version doesn’t allow backtracking

I (the writer!) have had great experiences dating internationally and at home on Bumble, whether I’ve been in New York City or traveling in Asia or Europe. I’ve tested this dating app and it’s carried me through different phases of my dating life.

I’ve tried Bumble when looking for something serious, just a hookup, and even to connect with new friends—and something about messaging first (as the female) makes me feel more safe and in control, since it allows me to set the tone of our conversation.

  • One week: $24.99
  • One month:  $49.99 ($11.66 per week)
  • 6 months:  $99.99 ($7.78 per week)
  • Unlimited:  $249.99

When dating internationally, you’re setting a wide, large net. If you want to be a bit more choosy, The League is a great option that’s available in 155 countries across six continents. Designed for ambitious people seeking equally ambitious people, the app is marketed towards people looking for more serious connections—that’s why we’ve chosen it as one of the best dating apps for working professionals .

When signing up for The League, you’re presented with an application process in which you submit your profile that’s connected to LinkedIn. You’ll be put on a waiting list, vetted by one of The League’s administrators, and then presented with a small handful of prospects daily.

The app is designed to encourage users to talk and then meet up in person. Matches expire after 30 days, so you’re more inclined to forge a real connection outside of the app.

  • Filters out work colleagues
  • Meant for ambitious people seeking other ambitious people
  • Verifies users through LinkedIn
  • Limited prospects every day
  • Paid options are pricey

Finding a serious connection with someone who is as ambitious as I am, is super important to me. Living in New York City, I meet tons of successful people organically—but I recently started a job that’s almost completely remote and I really wanted to meet more diverse people outside of the country.

While apps like Bumble and Hinge have larger user bases, I appreciate that The League presents me with more curated options.

Check out our full Tinder review .

Whatever your opinions on Tinder, you can’t change the fact that it has 75 million monthly active users all over the world. It’s the best option for anyone who wants a wide range—international daters included.

The cool thing with Tinder is that it’s all about ease. Profile setup doesn’t involve any detailed questionnaire or quiz. Instead, you’ll just upload (up to nine) pictures of yourself and add a bio of (500 characters or less).

You’ll be asked about your job title, company, school, location, and sexual orientation before you simply get to swiping—but this information is optional to fill out. Tinder even has a “smart photos” feature that puts your top-liked pictures at the top of your profile, so you don’t have to worry about rearranging.

  • Good for casual relationships and different types of connections
  • Available in 197 countries and you can see location of users
  • Free version is excellent
  • Not all people have descriptive profiles
  • Can be superficial due to swiping process

While there is a stigma about Tinder being only for hookups, we tried the app and loved it for meeting people casually. No, it’s likely not the best app for serious relationships and there are no compatibility scores, but if you have an open mind it could be a great way to meet new people.

  • One month: $8
  • 6 months: $24 ($6 per month)
  • 12 months: $32 ($2.60 per month)

  • 12 months: $96 ($8 per month)

Check out our full Hinge review .

Hinge has tons of options that really cater towards people trying to have more in-depth conversations that can lead to more serious, meaningful connections and relationships. The app really aims to match people based on shared interests and hobbies.

With a free membership, you can get access to nearly the entire range of app features, but the paid version offers the ability to get more choosy with your filters. In that version, you can filter by political beliefs, height, level of education, and much more.

  • Large user base for people looking for something serious
  • Prompts can be answered with text or audio
  • Queer-friendly
  • Paid version is kind of pricey
  • Limited options for indicating political beliefs

Our tester used Hinge to connect with people internationally before going on trips. It the app is a lot of fun to use in Europe—what better way to see a city than to go on dates with locals? We also appreciate that since Hinge has audio prompts, you can listen to a person’s voice before meeting IRL. Our tester was connecting with people from different cultures and felt closer to them by hearing their voice before meeting.

  • One week:  $24.99 per week
  • One month:  $49.99 per month
  • 3 months: $99.99 ($33.33/month)
  • 6 months:  $149.99 ($24.99/month)

Check out our full OkCupid review .

OkCupid has changed quite a bit since the dating site first hit the scene over a decade ago. It’s now one of the most inclusive dating apps out there.

OkCupid offers a large selection of LGBTQ-friendly gender and sexual orientation options to identify with and is also supportive of non-monogamous relationships.

After answering a super in-depth personality quiz, OkCupid’s super smart algorithm will pair you with someone, but it goes even further than that.

When users are shown options for matches, you’ll also see a compatibility score based on the app’s algorithm and how you both answered the questionnaire.

One of our writers tried OkCupid , and said it was the most successful app they’d tried, saying it was the one on which they were able to build the most meaningful connections based upon shared beliefs and connections. The detailed profiles really offer the ability to understand a person before even having your first conversation with them.

  • One month:  $29.99
  • 3 months:  $59.99 ($19.99 per month)
  • 6 months: $89.99 ($14.99 per month)

  • 3 months:  $79.99 ($26.66 per month)
  • 6 months: $119.99 ($19.99 per month)

What is an international dating site?

Simply put, an international dating site is one on which people from countries all over the world can connect and form romantic relationships.

While some apps and sites have limitations on the distance/range of partners you can look at, others offer extremely wide ranges. A few are specifically designed for international dating, rather than just offering it as a feature.

[International dating sites] are perfect for adventurous souls who are open to exploring diverse cultures, learning new languages, and forming connections no matter the geographical location of their prospective partner,” says therapist LaTonya Washington, LICSW.

Comparing the best international dating sites

How we picked.

  • Security: We looked for apps with strong security features to protect data, keeping dating app safety top of mind.
  • User base: Each site on our list has a large user base with representation from diverse backgrounds.
  • Expert insight: We’ve interviewed dozens of dating experts and kept their insight top of mind when selecting the best international dating sites.
  • Testing:  To truly know which sites are best for international dating, you have to try them for yourself. We tested every international dating site to evaluate the sign up process, app interface, and overall user experience.

How to choose the best international dating site for you

When choosing which international dating site to use, there are a number of factors to consider.

Large, diverse user base

The best international dating app should have diverse users from several countries. After all, isn’t that the point of getting to know people from all over the globe?

Translation tools

If you’re dating in a country whose language you don’t speak, you’ll definitely want to prioritize platforms that offer translation tools to reduce language barriers.

Safety features

Washington recommends looking for an app or site with safety features to protect users against scams and fraud.

Phone and messaging capabilities

Of course, audio messaging and video or voice call capabilities are all key if you’re considering dating someone in a different country. “These options are cost-effective [compared to booking frequent flights], but they’ll also be safer for you,” says Washington.

Tips for international online dating

International online dating can be a great experience for anyone who is open-minded and willing to be patient with the process. Washington adds that navigating cultural differences requires care, compassion, and patience.

“While you may get excited about wanting to visit someone, consider the use of regular video calls to build an authentic connection and healthy foundation for developing a relationship first,” she says.

Approach learning about your potential partner’s culture with curiosity, kindness, and sincere interest. Of course dating is all about having fun, but Washginton adds that it’s important to be cautious of scams. Be sure to never send money to someone you’ve never met in person.

How dating impacts longevity

You likely already know that dating can bring joy, connection, and a sense of fulfillment. Washington adds that positive relationships can also do even more than that.

“[Relationships] can boost self-esteem, reduce stress, improve mental health, and physical health,” she says.

Just make sure to always prioritize self-care, even while getting to know your potential partner. Pace yourself and ensure that you’re not rushing into anything you aren’t ready for.

Does Bumble work internationally?

Bumble has great international reach, and Washginton supports it since it has an emphasis on empowering women to make the first move. “It can be a great choice for those seeking more control over their interactions,” she says.

Is there an international Tinder?

There isn’t a separate app that you need to download to use Tinder internationally, so you can use the same app for international dating. Simply change your mile range.

Washington says since it’s known for its vast user base, Tinder can be a good option depending on your personal preferences.

What is the most private dating site?

If privacy is your top concern, Washington says to consider platforms that prioritize privacy, like OkCupid and eHarmony. For any other sites, she simply says to carefully review their privacy policies.

The takeaway

Whether you're planning ahead for an upcoming trip or you're simply interested in pursuing a relationship with someone in another country, the best international dating sites make that connection possible.

When trying these dating apps for yourself, make sure to stay mindful of dating app safety .

What should you do first while looking for a travel buddy?

Many people who desire to travel around the world and see breathtaking places don’t have a suitable travel companion. And not everyone can make an announcement “travel buddy wanted” via social networks.

Most likely your perfect travel buddy and even destiny are not among your old internet friends. And this is the main reason to start looking for a travel buddy on the special project. At first pick and post your best photos, decide where you want to go and what do you plan to visit, write all hobbies, interests and plans in your personal profile and start an exciting race of making new friends all around our planet.

There are several secrets that help while choosing a travel buddy

Pay attention to people’s plans and habits. For example, if a person writes in a profile that he prefers energetic lifestyle with tons of activities and you enjoy calm and quite sightseeing – probably you won’t make a good match even if other interests are similar. If you two are early birds – that’s great, if not it could do you wrong. Imagine the situation when your buddy is a night owl and doesn’t give you a chance to rest.

So try to write a list of what you prefer while traveling. Do you like organized or spontaneous trips? Riding a car or hiking miles? Dining at home or tasting foreign cuisine? And you can also mention on what side of the bed you sleep. Make a funny note - travel buddy with left bedside preference wanted. Fortunately, your perfect travel buddy will appreciate this tiny joke. And don’t forget that sense of humor is one of the most important things in any relationship.

Travel dating for solo female travelers in 2023: Apps and tips to stay safe

best travel dating sites

Is travel dating a good idea? Is it safe? What are the best travel dating sites?

Technology has transformed the way we meet people when we travel, specifically, as a result of the proliferation of dating apps with travel dating features. This trend was only amplified during the pandemic, where virtual connections were the only kind possible.

You longer needs to go to the local bar or club alone, join day trips or stay at a hostel to find a date when traveling. You can now scroll through profiles on dating apps from the comfort of your sofa, thousands of miles away, and before your trip even starts.

Travel dating sites have made it easier, safer and faster than ever before to meet people from all genders and sexual orientations, even in places where pre-marital or LGBTQ+ relationships are taboo or illegal.

The question is no longer whether you can find a date when traveling, but how to do so smartly and safely, especially for women traveling alone.

A first date with a stranger in another country could be a great idea or a foolish one; Women in our solo female travelers community , use dating apps as a unique opportunity to meet interesting people, connect with the locals, share a meal with someone in between evenings eating alone , practice a language or explore a city in the company of a local travel buddy .

“Some of my best travel experiences come from dating apps. My bio says I’m looking for adventures and tours, and so I’ve gone on some incredibly unique dates and partied with locals”, says one of our members.

“I used tinder in Rome and met one roman guy, he showed me a lot of stuff that I didn’t know about Rome, best experience ever” adds another.

However, some female travelers prefer to avoid vacation dating and spend their time abroad sightseeing and getting to know the destination because they view travel dating as putting themselves at increased risk of something bad happening .

We support whatever decision you see right for you, and if you are looking to give dating a try on your next trip, we have compiled a list of the best travel dating sites and some tips to keep you safe when dating abroad.

best travel dating sites

Female founded and public since 2021 , Bumble is a popular dating app with a distinctive factor: women make the first move. The app claims to have changed the dynamics of dating by giving it an equal tone from the beginning.

Bumble is location-based and it works using the well-known “swipe right or left” format, which became popular thanks to Tinder.

The app is used mainly for dating (Date), but it can also be used for networking (Bizz) or to meet friends online (BFF), a feature very much appreciated by our members.

What solo female travelers think of Bumble

Many members of our community agree that it is a safe app for users to build genuine relationships, be it intimate or in the form of a friendship.

Our member Lise recommended Bumble as her top pick: “Bumble definitely! Met some amazing people, dating or friends (including my actual bf!). It also depends a lot on the country you’re traveling to. Some dating apps are more or less known and the vibe is not always the same according to the country (Bumble is amazing in Sweden for example but absolutely empty in France)”.

Our Co-Founder, Mar, also met her partner on Bumble.

How Bumble works

Below are the main steps you need to follow to start using Bumble.

  • Create your account: Sign up using an email or logging in with Facebook/Google.
  • Set up your profile: Add your name, a short description of yourself (up to 300 characters) and a few photos (up to 6). You can choose to link your IG profile as well. Clarify the gender you’re interested in. It’s key to add high quality photos and a creative bio. The most swiped-right profiles usually appear at the top of the line for other users , this means that the popular profiles, the ones that have the highest level of activity in your area, will appear at the top of the list on your feed.
  • Set your match preferences: Set the age range, gender and distance preferences. If you have the Bumble Premium subscription, you can also choose advanced Bumble filters , which are categories you set up to narrow down the profiles in your Swipe Deck (main feed). This customizes your whole experience and makes a more curated search based on your interests.
  • Start swiping: Bumble rewards “good behavior”. This means that if you start swiping right to every profile that comes up, Bumble’s algorithm will immediately send your profile to the back of the line and might not get many views from other profiles. Instead, choose carefully and swipe right to profiles you really like and would go on a date with.
  • Match: You will get a “match” with the users who liked your profile back.
  • Send a message: In Bumble, only women can start the conversation, so you will be able to choose who to message from your “match” profile queue. Then, men have another 24 hours to answer. With couples of the same sex, either one can start the conversation, but the timing rule still applies. You can extend the match for another 24 hours, but you can only do it once a day for free. Bumble offers a premium paid subscription with more features including unlimited “match” extensions. Once the conversation is started, there are no more time limits and you can exchange messages for as long as you wish.
  • (Optional) Video chat : Bumble has a voice and video calling feature. You can also add a “virtual dating” filter to your profile, which will let users know that you’re interested in video chatting before meeting up.
  • Meet up: if you want and both users agree, you go out on a date. Set up a place and time to meet each other. We suggest choosing a public place, where it’s lit up and there are people around.

Why we like Bumble for safe travel dating

When it comes to dating while traveling, Bumble has a few useful features that we particularly like.

The first one is Bumble’s “ Travel Mode ”, a feature that is only available as a part of the Bumble Premium subscription. If you activate it, you will be able to select the city your profile appears in for 7 days so you can start to meet people ahead of your trip.

Your location will appear as the center of the city you’ve chosen and you can change your location to other cities that are part of your trip, as many times you want.

Because we prefer to be safe than sorry, we also appreciate Bumble’s video or voice call options, you could try to chat with someone you are interested in meeting beforehand to confirm they are who they say they are, even a quick voice call can help you filter out anyone who your intuition disagrees with.

If you like the app and want to take more advantage of it, Bumble offers 2 kinds of paid subscription plans: Bumble Boost and Bumble Premium, which have many additional features to enjoy.

Tinder remains the most popular dating site in the US, and the one that invented the “swipe right” feature and revolutionized the world of online dating.

The app has been downloaded more than 340 million times and is available in 190+ countries, making it an appealing travel dating site. In fact, it was the world’s most downloaded app during 2021.

Fun fact: There are more than 3,000 posts hashtagged #TinderWedding on Instagram. Most of the users are male (at about 70/30%) and most are Millennials (between 30 and 45 years old). Tinder has the most number of users in the US, the UK, Brazil, Canada, and France.

Tinder is very simple to use and uses the swipe right or left feature to let you decide if you like someone. If the other person likes you back, you’ll get a “match”.

What solo female travelers think of Tinder

Tinder is the most global of the dating apps and is generally perceived as a “hook-up” app across the board. Users on the app may be there with a certain objective in mind, which is fine as long as you want that too.

“I have tinder gold so I change my location and start chatting with people before I get to my destination”, says one of our members.

Our group member Stell shared her positive experience with Tinder: “I’ve used Tinder throughout Latin America. I’d used it to ask the locals what they recommend, what to do to get off the beaten track. I’d add some of those recommendations and tips into my plans. I also went on a handful of dates, they took me to some great local spots. I say go for it but like everything, take the usual precautions”.

How Tinder works

  • The first step is creating your account . You can log in using Facebook/Google account or choose to fill out your name and age, which you won’t be able to change after creating your profile. You can also include your gender, sexual orientation, job, school and city (which are optional).
  • Continue with writing your bio and adding media : some quality photos. You can enable the “Smart Pictures” feature, and Tinder will alternate the order of your pictures and as users like you, it will re-order your images showing the most liked first.
  • To personalize your profile even more : choose your interests (min 3, max 5) and lifestyle description, which are social, personal and professional predetermined descriptions.
  • Swipe: When you’re all set go to Discovery, which is the part of the app where you see other profiles and swipe right or left. To edit your search preferences, go to Discovery settings and select location, distance, age and gender, as you like.
  • Match : If two people like each other’s profile, they will make a “match”, then anyone is able to send a message and start the conversation. If you already matched with someone but changed your mind, you can “unmatch” them in the top right corner of your chat, and they will disappear from your match list.

Why we like Tinder for safe travel dating

Besides the unique features that Tinder has, its global footprint makes it a very appealing and useful travel dating app because it is largely used everywhere.

Besides this consideration, Tinder’s paid subscription (Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold, or Tinder Platinum), have a “ Passport ” feature allows you to search by city or drop a pin in the map and start liking, matching, and messaging other users that are in the selected area.

You can navigate in your current location, and also search in destinations you’re traveling to. You can virtually select one city at a time, but you can change the location as many times you like.

best travel dating sites

Hinge focuses on effective dating and building long-lasting relationships and was recommended by many members of our community as a great platform for short-term travel dates.

What solo female travelers think of Hinge

Our members agree that Hinge is a popular app in Europe, and they like the travel prompts which are useful conversation starters as it can be quite awkward to get started after a match if there wasn’t anything that you could bring up.

Our group member Marissa shared her review:

“Hinge is a good one and popular in Europe. I find the info on the profiles give much more information than you tend to get from Tinder, so you can spend less time chatting and feel more confident about meeting quickly. But obviously do be careful”.

How Hinge works

Hinge is similar to its main competitors Tinder and Bumble but has some special features that make it quite unique, such as prompts or standouts.

Prompts are short questions that give your profile a more personalized and fun look and help start a conversation. Standouts are a list of your most compatible matches. To get started follow the steps below.

  • Create a profile: When creating your profile, you include the usual, your name, email, age and location. You are required to add at least 6 photos or videos. Then there’s an option to go deeper and add details of your work, education level, religion, political beliefs, height, etc.
  • Pick your prompts: To complete your profile you have to choose 3 prompts, which are predetermined questions about your personal life and interests. Some of the prompts available on the app are: “I get along with people who…”, “Fun fact about me”, “Topics to debate”, “One thing I cannot live without”. Pick your prompts wisely as they can get you more matches and be creative conversation starters.
  • Set your preferences : Here’s where you choose the gender of your interest and location. If you have a must you’re looking for in other profiles, you could set up a dealbreaker, which will filter the users and only show you the ones that have your deal breaker in their profile.
  • Look for potential matches : Hinge displays one user at a time, and lets you browse their photos and prompts. There are two options: choose to like or reject them by using the heart and “x” icons, respectively.

Hinge’s like function is a bit different from the rest. In other dating apps, you like the user’s complete profile, whether in Hinge, you can like a specific picture or prompt, and let that person know what caught your attention. Also, when you like something you can leave a comment and start the conversation. Weekly, you have one chance of upgrading your like into a “rose”, which shows that you are very interested in that profile.

For your “standout” list, Hinge uses its algorithm to put together your most compatible profiles, based on their likes and prompt answers. But there’s a trick to it: you can’t like any profile from your standout list, instead you have to send them a “rose”, so you can only do it once a week, or buy more roses in the app.

For the messaging part, once you get a match with someone, anyone can send a message and start the conversation.

Why we like Hinge for safe travel dating

There’s a prompt called “Best travel story” which encourages users to tell a unique adventure they’ve had during a trip and can tell you a lot about a user and start a travel related conversation. Or test whether they would be a good travel companion if you are using it as a travel dating site.

Facebook Dating

best travel dating sites

Facebook Dating is “the Walmart of travel dating” as one of our members put it. It’s the company’ first inroads into a completely new social networking space within the Facebook app where you can meet new people who share your interests.

The service launched in 2018 and can be accessed from your Facebook account without the need for a separate app, and is currently available in 46 countries.

What solo female travelers think of Facebook Dating

How facebook dating works.

To use Facebook Dating, you need to create a Dating profile, which is different from your main profile. You can add up to 12 photos and, like Hinge, choose ice-breaker prompts you can answer and include in your profile.

In Dating, you can like and message people you’re interested in. When another person likes you back, you’ll get a match, similarly to the other apps, and can start messaging each other.

Your Dating profile will not be visible to your current Facebook friends or anyone outside Facebook Dating. Likewise, your Dating chats will be separate from your main account’s inbox and you can delete your Dating profile whenever you want, without affecting your main Facebook account.

Facebook Dating uses data to suggest the best potential matches for you. Besides using the info in your profile, like interests and preferences, they also use info from your main profile, like Facebook Groups and events you may have in common.

You can narrow down the options in your suggested matches by setting up a “strong preference” in your ideal match section.

A unique feature of Facebook Dating is called “Secret Crush”. In the Interests section of the app,  you can add a list of up to 9 secret crushes. If any of those users also added your profile to their list, both will receive a notification and get a match. After that, you can begin messaging. So unless you match with someone, you won’t know who added you to their Secret Crush list.

Why we like Facebook Dating for safe travel dating

Facebook is everywhere and has a large user base, couple this with the relatively low friction model to create your Dating profile and you have a relatively easy travel dating site that is also free, at least for now.

In addition, Facebook Dating has other options that make it a particularly useful travel dating site. The first one is the “ Match Anywhere ” option (being rolled out) which lets you pick up to 2 additional locations where you can browse profiles. In those locations, you can also decide if users who added your primary dating location as additional can see your profile or match with you.

The second is the fact that you don’t need to download an extra app and can simply use Facebook, and do not need to keep separate messaging or go through the cumbersome chatting functions of other apps that make it more likely to move away and to Whatsapp other easier messaging apps.

best travel dating sites

Happn is an app that “connects you to the people you cross paths with every day”. Unlike other apps, which have a larger geographical focus that you can set yourself, Happn focuses on narrow geofencing and on helping you notice the people who share your daily routine.

Its location-based algorithm makes it possible to connect to other Happn users who you have crossed paths with during the day, and it even has a map where you can locate people who are going out in the same area you’re in, which makes it easier to just meet right there and then.

What solo female travelers think of Happn

How happn works.

The sign-up process for Happn is very similar to the other dating apps mentioned above.

  • Create a profile : First you fill out your basic information (name, age, gender of interest, city of residence) or you can also signup using your Facebook/Google account.
  • Enter other details : Happn goes deeper into details by asking you to add a short self description, work and education data, and your habits (exercise, cooking, travel, partying, etc), you can even add your music selection from Spotify!
  • Discover : Then explore the main feed to see profiles who cross paths with you.
  • Match : You can like or dislike each profile and if the like is mutual, it’s a “crush”.
  • Connect : Happn users can only send a message if both have liked each other’s profile.

If you have special interest in a user, you can send a “flashnote”, which is a personalized message that will catch their attention.

Why we like happn for safe travel dating

Happn makes the user experience of dating online more spontaneous and closer to the old way we used to meet people when going out by simply approaching a stranger and starting a conversation.

You can open the app at a bar, restaurant, an attraction like a museum or even at your hotel, and see who is around, then see if you spot them, and walk up and talk to them or propose an impromptu meetup.

If you met someone independently of the app, and did not exchange contacts, you can still find them on Happn, as it will show you profiles you actually crossed paths with, and continue the conversation there.

On the flip side, someone else can also do this with you, so you should be extra careful about the details you reveal on the app at any time, but particularly when abroad, and not reveal anything that could put you in danger (more on that in the next section).

best travel dating sites

Match Group owns Tinder and Match.com, the platform favored by the older generations who use it twice as much as they use Tinder. According to its website, 80% of the users are above the age of 30.

Match.com has been around since 1995, this makes it the very first online dating platform.

It started off as a regular website you would signup for then fill in a profile in. The profile was very detailed and would be entirely focused on finding a life partner, much like a matchmaking service, at scale.

The app will then show you members that fit your criteria and you can message them to connect. This means you don’t have to swipe but rather look through the profiles suggested.

They are so sure that you will find a suitable member to meet that if you sign up for 6 months and don’t find anyone in that time frame, they’ll extend the subscription for another 6 months.

How Match.com works

Unlike other apps which are quick to get started on Match.com leans on a detailed questionnaire to get to know you better.

  • Create your profile : Enter details such as you name, what you are looking for, email, date of birth and address.
  • Fill in a detailed questionnaire : You’ll be asked to share info on your political and religious views, your lifestyle, your preferences, etc. You will have to make the same selections for the partner you are looking for.
  • You will then be shown a list of matches : You can sort out the list based on age, distance, etc.
  • Start messaging other members : You don’t have to match with someone else (i.e. like someone who likes you back) to message them, you can message anyone you like shown in your match list. The number of messages you can send every day will depend on your membership level.

Why we like Match.com for safe travel dating

Unlike the other apps, Match.com has been around for long and is less gimmicky than other apps that are focused on gamification. It is very focused on safety and has several features entirely devoted to making users feel safe:

  • An entire section on the website on safety tips.
  • Background checks on members in collaboration with Garbo , so you know profiles are real and there are no criminals or sex offenders.
  • A team of moderators reviewing personal profiles and descriptions to make sure they are real and not spammy. When you report a profile, it gets looked at by a real person and not an AI.
  • A feature that allows you to make a call using a temporary phone number without having to share yours.

There are also two premium features we like: the Zen mode, which only shows you people who match your criteria, and Incognito mode which hides you from everyone but lets you see others.

Lastly, you can choose to show your profile to older users (over 50) or to single parents, so you are among likeminded people.

Match.com also organizes in person events and even trips so you can speed-date in real life.

What we don’t like about Match.com is that it is one of the most expensive apps and that it is harder to use it as a travel dating app because your location is set and intended to be permanent as this is a service used to find a life partner.

best travel dating sites

eHarmony is one of the oldest online dating apps and started off as a website in 2020. Today, it is available in 125 countries.

It offers a 50/50 male/female split on the site, so there are many options for both men and women to find their right partner. It also uses a Compatibility Matching System to suggest the right profiles for you.

You can see their many success stories to read more.

How eHarmony works

Unlike other dating apps, eHarmony will ask you to complete a questionnaire about your personality and what you are looking for and will show you profiles that match that criteria.

  • Create a profile and fill in the compatibility survey
  • Find the list of matches for you : The app will show you members who match your criteria and with whom you have high compatibility.
  • Start connecting with other members : On the free profile you will only be able to send a few messages a day, upgrade for unlimited messaging.

Why we like eHarmony for safe travel dating

eHarmony has been in business for a really long time and is focused on matchmaking instead of only dating, so if you are looking for shorter term travel dating apps, it may not be the right one for you.

However, it is a great place to meet someone in a place you are planning to move to or a future travel partner!

Internations

best travel dating sites

I used Internations for several years until I met my partner. As an expat, the platform offered a very niche and curated experience specifically targeted at those young professionals who travel a lot for business and are looking to connect with likeminded, and often high-flying, professionals for dinners and networking events in the key global cities.

The focus of Internations is not exclusively on dating but rather on professional networking meeting other expats in various cities by attending social events such as drinks that are organized by local ambassadors. In the larger cities, these events can gather a few hundred people and are an easy place to meet others.

Everyone is open minded and there is usually a local host that is there ready to greet you and introduce you to other to break the ice. From then on, you’re on your own but are likely to find lots of topics to chat as everyone is generally an expat.

Internations has a feature where you can share your travel plans and meet up with others who respond, either local or who will be there at the same time as you. This will usually be for dinner as the focus is on business travelers who have meetings during the day.

What solo female travelers think of Internations

I do not recommend upgrading to the paid membership. Many users were angry during the pandemic because the membership renewed automatically under German law, where the company is based, and Internations did not to refund anyone, regardless of extenuating circumstances or the lack of a notification of renewal.

So if you upgrade, make sure to set up a notification to decide if you want to cancel it before it gets renewed.

How Internations works

Like all other social media networks, Internations requires you to join with an email and password and then fill in a profile.

From that moment on, you can share your travel plans which will be posted on the city’s feed, or see what events are planned where you live or will travel to, and simply join, then go in person. These events carry an entry fee which tends to include a drink.

There is a free membership and a paid one with more features such as discounts to events.

Why we like Internations for safe travel dating

Being more of a cross between Tinder and LinkedIn, Internations is more of serious and professional platform where most of the users behave themselves as if they were in a business setting and thus, improper conversations or interactions are unlikely. This means you should feel safer on Internations than you do elsewhere.

Additionally, the destination events are a great way to meet other people, local, expats and travelers, and to maybe carry on with a group or one on one dinner date afterwards, or on the following day.

Plenty of fish (POF)

best travel dating sites

Plenty of Fish is a Canadian born dating app that is popular in English-speaking countries. It is different from the rest because of the little filtering the app does and the fact that it is free to get started in, resulting in, as the name indicates, plenty of options.

That means that I can take quite some time to scroll through options until you find someone you want to meet but also that you have more options than on other paid-only dating platforms.

POF is focused on providing fun games for users to engage in so you can make the whole experience less awkward. For example, you can play a game called Cue’d which asks random questions to 5 singles at a time.

You can expect at least, a fun time, as POF sayd: “Read the cues and be as honest (or savage) as you want with your answers. You’ll be playing with 5 singles so show ‘em who you really are!”.

What solo female travelers think of Plenty of Fish

Our members agree that Plenty of Fish is a great way to get started online dating at home or when traveling because it is free so there is little financial commitment, but this usually comes at a cost of time or having to lower your risk threshold.

“I have met some cool decent men off POF and alot of creeps too, but I guess that’s to be expected.”

How Plenty of Fish works

  • Create a profile on the app with your email
  • Choose the kind of experience you want : Select your gender and sexual preferences, location, whether you are looking for a serious relationship or not, and the age range for your search.
  • Start matching : You will see a limited number of profiles to start matching with on the free account and you can upgrade to increase the number.
  • Start messaging : You can message all the users you matched with. Every day, you will also see a few members you can message directly at the top of your feed.

Why we like Plenty of Fish for safe travel dating

Plenty of Fish is on the lower side when it comes to safety features, especially if compared to other sites and apps on this list which have filters and checks. It also does not offer any support, since it is largely free and focuses on offering customer service via self-service Help center and a chat feature.

However, Plenty of Fish it is free, so if you are only keen to get a taster for what online dating could look like or are open to meet people wherever you may be traveling to, without any commitment or interest in long term dating, it is a no-frills, low entry barrier option.

19 Tips to stay safe when travel dating in 2023

best travel dating sites

Travel dating can be exciting, but don’t let the heat of the moment unarm you and bring your defenses down.

You’re interacting with strangers in an unfamiliar online environment and there are many risks associated with this new world of online dating, so taking precautions is needed.

Always put safety first and never do something you’re not comfortable with. You don’t owe anyone any politeness, if at any time something does not feel right, get out of that situation.

While the same safety tips for travel dating would apply to dating in your own city, there are extra layers of danger that come from being in an unfamiliar territory where a friend cannot come to the rescue, you may not speak the language or have an easy way to get back home.

In this section we have compiled tips for staying safe when dating while traveling based on the experiences shared by members and our own. If you have any other tips to add, feel free to leave them in the comments box at the bottom and we will be glad to add them.

1. Follow regular travel safety precautions

We won’t list them here again, but we have written a very detailed piece on travel safety tips . It’s always a good idea to give the list a read before going on a date when traveling.

Things like keeping your money safe, not revealing where you are staying, etc. are handy in any situation even when dating and traveling.

Also take a look at the FBI’s internet crime report released every year for new online scams and crimes born online.

2. Beware of catfishing

Cat fishing is one of the biggest worries of anyone who is dating when traveling and sadly a possibility we have seen happen to friends of ours.

The practice consists of creating a fake persona online with pictures from other people, and an entirely made up story. You then go on the date only to realize the person is not who they said they were.

Sometimes it is simply a way to conceal their identity for harmless (yet unethical) reasons like for example if they are married but it can also be the beginning of a dangerous situation if you then get cornered, robbed or worse by a gang. Online scams are on the rise.

“I once went on a date with someone who had nothing to do with their profile photo. It turned out he did not want his work colleagues to know he was on Tinder and had created an entirely fake persona. This put me off from the start and I just could not get past the lie, no matter how pleasant the evening was”, shares one of our members.

Take your time to get to know the other person before meeting up. Be aware of any red flags or strange behavior and suggest having a quick video call before meeting up, just to make sure they are who they say in their profile.

Additionally, an easy way to see if their profile picture is real is to take a screenshot and use Google Images to do a reverse search for the photo. You can not only verify they say who they say theta are but also find out more about them. If the image appears on stock sites or is someone else you will be able to confirm that this way.

3. Keep your privacy

When creating your profile, it’s easy to link other social media networks and to use the same pictures you have on your Facebook profile but this will expose yourself more to complete strangers by allowing them to use the same reverse image search function we suggested above to detect catfishing on you.

Try to use images that cannot be found anywhere else on the net, maybe even take specific selfie or regular photos for the dating app that won’t link back to you and connect the dots on where you live, work, etc.

Besides the images, don’t release information such as where you are staying (hotel, room number) or where you live. Stay vague on your job and company name and if possible, pretend that you are traveling with friends but they have other plans that day.

The less vulnerable you can make yourself look, the better.

4. Be your own private investigator

This may sound a bit paranoid but we prefer to be safe than sorry here and doing your bit of research and private investigative work when it comes to meeting a stranger for the first time may get your out of a pickle or in the best of cases, save you from hours wasted chatting with an uninteresting or down right boring person.

Google is your best friend here. Besides the research work to find out if the person is who they say they are, you should check out if the rest of the details square. Does their age, job and lifestyle match with what they said? Are there any red flags?

5. Stay on the app

Just like you would not move a conversation to book an Airbnb outside of the app, avoid moving the conversation outside of the dating app until you have met the person once at least.

It may be tempting to do so because it is much easier to use SMS or Whatsapp but when you share your phone number you also expose yourself to a host of other scams and reveal private information that can be used to commit other crimes.

Politely decline, say you don’t use Whatsapp or that you don’t exchange them with anyone before a first date.

A member was harassed and extorted for money on the phone by someone impersonating themselves as the police in Dubai after exchanging phone numbers with someone on Tinder.

The person on the phone had a strong Nigerian accent which set the alarms off but the entire experience was terrifying.

If you remain on the app, you can also report a user who has broken the rules or has done anything inappropriate and warn others.

6. You don’t owe anyone anything

Always remember that you don’t owe anyone anything and don’t need to continue a conversation with someone who makes you feel uncomfortable or uneasy or is making all your alarm go off.

Some of these red flags are immediate talk about marriage, plans to come visit you in your country before you even go on a date, or vague assertions about themselves.

The advantage of online dating sites is that they are much safer than real life dating and can help as a filter to get to know someone before meeting them in real life, so don’t be afraid to block someone and move on, that is a better option to getting into a fight, confronting them and risking them finding a way to find you.

7. Never send money

There are millions of users in dating apps and not everyone uses them with good intentions. Some of them are scammers trying to trick you into sending them money .

Never send any money to another user no matter how convincing their story may be. Do not wire transfer nor buy them gift cards, which are the most common transaction methods scammers ask for . Even if you have been messaging for a few days or they claim it’s an emergency, do not share any financial information or transfer funds to the person.

Avoid sending money for investment opportunities the scammer will tell you about. A recent scam involves a too-good-to-be-true crypto currency investment you can’t miss.

This can be dangerous and irreversible. If you find yourself in this situation, report it to the dating app immediately and block the user.

8. Don’t share personal information

Make sure not to share any information or images that can be used to extort you for money later on such as nudes, private details of your work or colleagues of confidential information.

Avoid sharing other personal details that can be put together to access your accounts. For example, it is common for banking apps to ask for your date of birth, pet name, mother’s maiden name, social security number, postal code and other personal details as security questions.

A scammer could ask you these various questions over a few days, masking the real interest and distracting you from what they are trying to achieve.

For example, your address could be useful to send you flowers, your mother maiden’s name could come as part of a conversation on your childhood’s, you could easily chat about your pets and you could be asked to provide your passport number to book a fictitious flight for a vacation.

9. Deactivate face or fingerprint login on your device

If your date goes well, you may move home to take this forward. You may then decide to spend the night and fall asleep.

A potential scammer could use your face or fingerprint to login to your phone, access your bank account or mobile money transfer app and send themselves money, then disappear.

Consider deactivating this from your phone if you are going on a date.

10. Start small

If you are meeting a stranger in an unfamiliar place, why not start small with maybe lunch or a tourist attraction you were planning to see anyway? Perhaps they can come with you to a museum and you can see how that goes, this way you have the company of a local for a sightseeing activity that has a sale by date.

We also recommend you make it clear upfront that you have something booked for later so the timing is set and you don’t have to amend your sightseeing plans because you can’t get out of a boring date.

Even if you don’t have anywhere to be, it’s useful to pretend you do and set expectations from the start. If the date goes really well, you can then extend it and amend your plans.

For example, meet someone for lunch and tell them that you have tickets for X museum for 2: 30 PM so you have an out, or better yet, that you are meeting your friend at that time because you decided to split for a few hours because they wanted to do something you are not interested in.

11. Share the details of your date with a friend

It’s important to share your date plans with someone you trust, including the place where you’re going, time, and contact information like phone number. You can also share your live location with that person, this way if anything happens it will be easy to track you down. You could even agree on a time for your friend to call you in case you need an out.

If the date is going great and you feel safe and comfortable, don’t forget to send a message to your trusted person to let them know everything is going well.

12. Meet in a public place you want to check out

“Make sure to meet in a public place! Get their info and send it to someone at home in case something happens. Enjoy!” says Jo.

It is always safer to start by meeting up somewhere public and not in your hotel room or apartment rental. Choose a public place that is well lit up and has people walking around during day and night. Make sure it has easy access to public transport and commercial establishments like stores and restaurants.

Avoid going to places where there’s no signal or that are far away from the city center which may be hard for you to get away from.

Suggest a place you want to try, maybe it’s a restaurant that you have read about and want to check out, or an attraction you want to visit, this way you can control the budget, location and atmosphere. A place that is near your hotel is a good idea, so you can easily get back after the date ends.

If you don’t want to reveal where you are staying, pretend you need to use the bathroom when the date ends and say your goodbyes before so they don’t know which way you went.

If it’s dark outside, order an Uber (make sure you have downloaded and set up the local version of Uber wherever you are) and stay inside the bar or restaurant until it arrives. Using a taxi hailing app will avoid the extra stress of having to deal with language barriers as the taxi driver knows exactly where you are going.

Never take up an offer to be picked up or dropped off by your date so you don’t put yourself in the vulnerable situation of being at their mercy. If someone wants to walk you home, tell them you are staying at a hotel near where you met and say your goodbyes in the lobby, then wait for them to go and head back out.

14. Ask for Angela

Research the destination you are visiting and understand if there are code words to ask for help in case you need to get away from a situation.

For example, in London, Safer Sounds have worked with bars and restaurants as well as the authorities on a procedure for those in need of help when on a night out.

The initiative’s website explains, “People who feel unsafe, vulnerable or threatened can discreetly seek help by approaching venue staff and asking them for ‘Angela’. This code-phrase will indicate to staff that they require help with their situation and a trained member of staff will then look to support and assist them. This might be through reuniting them with a friend, accompanying them to a taxi, or by calling venue security and/or the police.”

Other businesses around the world may have similar codewords in place, sometimes a drink you can order and which is off the menu and has the same effect. You can find out about this on their website or in the female bathroom.

If you are somewhere where no codeword exists and you need to get out of the date but can’t see how, seek a member of the staff and ask that they help you out.

15. Maintain full awareness

Be alert to the effects that alcohol or drugs may have on your defenses and of how they may impair your ability to make the right choices and protect yourself. Minimize risks by being in full control of your mental abilities and not going above your personal limits.

Date rape drugs are a risk when dating a stranger. Never leave your drink unattended and only accept a beverage that has been served directly by the personnel and in front of you. If your date suggests he will go get the next round, accompany them, if they pressure you to drink or do drugs against your will, leave immediately. If you need to go to the bathroom, make sure you have finished your drink or that you will not continue to drink more after you return.

Beware of taking cigarettes from strangers too as these could have been adulterated too.

16. Don’t leave your belongings unattended

Even if you are with someone you know, you only just met them, don’t go to the bathroom and leave your purse or bag with them, take them with you everywhere and keep them always within your reach.

17. Come fully charged

We are referring to both cash and phone battery.

Your phone is your best ally when dating while traveling. It can get you out of a date by booking you a cab, it can let others follow you and it can help you get back home safely using Google Maps, but it needs to have enough battery for that to happen, make sure you leave the house with a full charge or carry a portable battery pack.

Having some cash with you will be useful if you want to settle the bill and leave without having to wait for change or a credit card machine, and you can also use it to flag a taxi on the street. You don’t have to carry a lot, just a bit to get you out of a difficult situation.

18. Always carry condoms

Even if you are not looking for anything more than a fun evening and a conversation, carry your own condoms in case the situation demands and you can protect yourself from any sexually-transmited illnesses.

Remember that even if you use other contraceptive methods to avoid a pregnancy, you can still catch an STI, most of which are invisible. Always be prepared for anything that could happen and don’t rely on others for your own protection.

19. Be mindful of cultural differences

It’s important to educate yourself about topics that matter in the place you’re visiting.

Language barriers are one of the most common when dating somebody abroad. Make sure you can communicate well in the same language, or try to overcome the language barrier using tools like translating apps or body language. If you’re dating a local, you can try to learn some basic words in the local language before meeting up.

Relationship or dating standards may vary depending on the country’s culture, religion, and customs. Some countries are more flexible and open minded when it comes to dating/relationships, while others are more conservative and have some culturally established standards.

For example, in many muslim majority countries local Muslim men cannot share a room with a woman they are not married to and while international chain hotels don’t usually questions guests on their marital status, local family-run establishments may.

Online For Love

Table of Contents

People who love traveling and experiencing new cultures find it pretty hard to find partners who are as adventurous as them.

If you are that type of person, then you will be very happy to hear that there are plenty of dating websites and apps made exclusively for people who are looking for both romantic partners and travel buddies.

We will rate these Travel Dating Sites according to:

These or some of the best dating apps and websites will help you find a soul mate that is as enthusiastic about traveling as you.

Miss Travel

The New MissTravel AppMissTravel Travel Blog

  • Signing up – 5/5
  • Making contact with people – 5/5
  • Profile quality – 5/5
  • Overall quality of the platform – 5/5
  • Hundreds of men looking for a travel partner
  • You usually don’t have to pay for anything
  • Some may expect you to act like a sugar baby

Demographic Makeup

Miss Travel is a very popular website among sugar babies and sugar daddies and it helps people find their perfect travel partners.

Even though it is the most popular among people in the sugaring world, it is still a good platform for all people who want to travel and can’t find a friend or partner for that.

The number of men and women on this platform is pretty equal, and both sides tend to offer paid travel to people of the opposite sex.

They are usually members of higher social classes who seek companionship on occasional trips and they are willing to pay people to join them.

The age range of its users is pretty diverse and women are usually somewhere between 20 and 27 years old, while men are anywhere between 30 and 50 years old.

Most of its users are white, but there is a quite big number of Black and Asian users too.

Ease of use (mobile and desktop version)

Miss Travel only has a desktop version and is very easy to use like most online dating sites that have been popular for a decade or more now.

The whole design is pretty simple and easy to navigate, and you can create your profile in just a minute or two.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 8

It is not really made for people to find love but rather to help them meet people who want to travel to the same destination, and are maybe willing to cover their traveling expenses.

However, my experience has shown me that quite a few people have managed to establish great relationships with their travel partners and some even managed to engage in romantic relationships.

On the other hand, there were also plenty of people who just clicked with their travel mates and continued to explore the world together.

There is really no algorithm or matchmaking process and you can search for people in your city, or sort them by age and sexual preferences.

As I have already mentioned, Miss Travel is usually used by sugar babies and sugar daddies but there are quite a few people who don’t seek these types of arrangements but are just looking for travel companions.

It is completely free for all people who register themselves as sugar babies, whether they are male or female so you can register yourself as a sugar baby and use it free of charge.

On the other side, people who want to provide others with free vacations register themselves as sugar daddies and pay around 30 dollars per month for this membership.

Is this platform made for escorting?

Even though it is very popular among sugar daddies and sugar babies, you can find plenty of people who are just looking for a regular travel buddy without any emotional or sexual expectations.

Some people are just lonely and are willing to provide others with valuable experiences they otherwise couldn’t afford.

Overall rating

Miss Travel is a very safe and popular travel dating website so I am sure many people will be able to find their perfect travel match here.

However, some people may have different expectations and that’s completely ok, you just have to be honest from the start with them.

Millennials love this platform and they use it pretty often, so if you are a part of this generation, you will for sure be able to find a like-minded partner on here.

In my opinion, this is a straight 5 out of 5 but be clear about your wishes and expectations from the start so you don’t find yourself in complicated relationships.

  • Signing up – 3/5
  • Making contact with people – 4/5
  • Profile quality – 4/5
  • Overall quality of the platform – 3/5
  • Millions of users around the world
  • Full of scammers
  • A lot of bugs

Tour Bar is a pretty popular travel dating app that helps people find true love in many different cities throughout the world and meet locals who are up for an adventure.

It has become very popular during the past few years, especially among people who spend their whole year traveling and don’t know another way to meet with people from the local community.

The users of this platform are usually very young, between 17 and 28 years old, and 60% of them are females.

Some of them are single people looking for their perfect match, while others are just solo travelers who are looking for some fun in their current location.

Tour Bar is a dating app that is currently available only to Android users, even though it worked on iPhones during the past year too.

While the whole signup process is pretty easy and simple, every account goes through a verification process, and that is something most users are complaining about.

According to them, some people get rejected even after they upload their ID and phone number, while other scam profiles get approved without any reason.

TourBar - Chat, Meet & Travel Apk Download for Android- Latest version 4.2.0- com.tourbar

The profile quality is okay, but it wouldn’t hurt if people were able to upload more information about themselves or at least describe their own interests and likes.

You can start liking and swiping other users once you join, just like on Tinder, but you won’t be able to send messages to people who don’t swipe you back.

In case you want to have the opportunity to reach out to everyone, you will have to pay for a Tour Bar membership.

The app is pretty simple and has a cool design, but users also complain there are quite a few bugs and it crashes down from time to time.

There is no algorithm of any sort and you will get people recommended to you by your current location.

Unfortunately, there are also plenty of fake profiles and scammers on here, so be very cautious when using it.

Free users of Tour Bar can edit their profile, change the locations and send messages to other people, but only people who will receive their messages are those who swipe them back.

In case someone didn’t see you liked or swiped their profile and you have sent them a message, you probably won’t get the answer anywhere in the future.

The membership is around 10 dollars per month but the app doesn’t state what other features are included in this membership since it doesn’t allow too many filters and features at all.

Is this a platform for hookups or serious relationships?

There is no definition of the type of relationship people are looking for on this platform, and while some of them are looking for a partner (like  eHarmony  or  Tinder ), others just want to meet new friends and find potential travel buddies or hookups (like  BeNaughty  or  Ashley Madison ).

During the pandemic though most people were looking for a relationship of some sort.

While Tour Bar is an app that has a pretty cool concept and helps you meet new people everywhere around the world, it still has a lot of bad sides and is probably not the best choice.

There are so many scammers and fake profiles that are hardly recognized, and the app itself has a lot of bugs and crushes down often.

It also won’t allow you to get in contact with everyone and even though the membership is pretty cheap, we are not very clear with what we are getting once we pay for it.

The platform looks pretty interesting and the design is interesting, but unfortunately, the platform is of very bad quality and I recommend skipping it.

YourTravelMates

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 9

  • Millions of active users everywhere
  • Very safe and reliable
  • Much more women than men

Your Travel Mates is probably the most popular travel dating website that has been gathering millions of people during the past decade.

It is full of people who establish travel dating profiles hoping to find like-minded romantic partners who will travel the world with them.

Since it has millions of users, you can find a potential partner in almost every bigger city in the world.

Demographic Makeup is quite diverse, but over 70% of its users belong to higher social classes and they can usually engage in traveling to luxury destinations.

On the other hand, more than 60% of users are women, so it may take some time to find a perfect man, especially if you living in New York where over 80% of users are women.

However, most people find great partners, and even if these relationships don’t become very serious, they can turn into great friendships and you can continue traveling together.

Your Travel Mates exists both as a website and as a dating app that is, for now, available only on Android devices.

While the signup process is pretty simple and fast, after you are signed up, you will have to fill out additional questionnaires that will allow the algorithm to connect you with people who have the highest compatibility with you.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 10

You will answer questions about your travel and lifestyle preferences, but also personal questions like your religion, education, and career.

Also, you are allowed to completely plan your next trip and make it public, so people who were thinking of doing the same thing can contact you and join you.

People on this platform are also looking for different types of travel, and while some are looking for backpacking buddies, others are looking for someone who will go cruising the Adriatic Sea with them.

Your Travel Mates also looks a bit like social media because you have a public place, or better say forum where you can share your experiences and offer to be a local guide to others.

You will have to pay to use Your Travel Mates and get the opportunity to schedule the first date and get in contact with others.

This platform offers you to pay for the number of messages you will be sending and each message is one credit.

A profile with 150 credits will cost you 20 dollars, the one with 600 is 150 dollars, and the one with 1500 credits is 300 dollars,

While the membership is quite expensive, you can pay 20 dollars, exchange a few messages and get in touch through another social media or messaging app to discuss the details of your future relationship.

How can I use this platform as a foreigner?

As a foreigner, you can start looking for potential buddies on solo travel and explore all the active users in the city you are currently in.

However, you should be aware that people in some places don’t really speak English so you may encounter a language barrier.

Your Travel Mates is definitely one of the best travel dating sites that allow people to meet like-minded singles and engage in adventurous travels with them.

It’s similar to traditional dating platforms like EHarmony and OkCupid and you will be able to find a potential partner pretty easy,

The thing may be a bit more difficult when you are looking at people from the local community you are currently in but in general, this is an amazing platform for all enthusiastic travelers.

I give it 5 out of 5 and recommend everyone to try it out!

TravelHostDate

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 11

  • Making contact with people – 3/5
  • Profile quality -3 /5
  • Overall quality of the platform – 4/5
  • Great travel community
  • Not too many active users

Travel Host Date is a travel dating website that was quite popular a few years ago, but it seems like it doesn’t have too many active users nowadays.

Even though it is pretty safe and easy to use, it had a very small number of new members during the past 2 years, and over 50% of dating profiles on here are inactive.

However, those who still use it are usually men and women older than 40 who are looking for an adventurous partner they can spend the rest of their life with.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 12

They are usually looking for serious relationships and don’t want to waste time on casual hookups.

Travel Host Date is a dating website that is pretty simple and pretty outdated, and even though you would think it works well, it has so many bugs and maybe even viruses.

Those who manage to access the platform will be presented with the signup page that will require them to upload their basic information and location so they can start searching for the soul mate.

There are no fancy features and filters or video chats and all you will be able to do is exchange messages with other people.

You also won’t see any algorithm that will connect you to people based on your compatibility and you will be shown all the profiles in no specific order.

Unfortunately, plenty of profiles on this platform are inactive and it can be a pretty long and exhausting process to find an interesting person.

Even though the website claims there are no scammers and fake profiles on it, my experience has shown me that there are plenty of scammers searching for a victim that will agree on a meet-up with them that can end badly.

Travel Host Date allows you to make a completely free profile and connect with other users, but after about 50 messages, you will be required to pay for a monthly membership if you want to continue using it.

Once you reach the message limit, you will have to wait for the next month before you are allowed to send messages again.

My advice is to use the platform for some time and in case you really find someone who seems to be interesting, exchange your social media accounts or phone numbers and continue chatting on here.

Are there real people on this platform?

Yes, there is for sure a large number of real people who use this platform, but unfortunately, there is a big number of inactive and fake profiles which makes the whole dating process a lot harder.

Travel Host Date used to be a very popular travel dating site a few years ago, but unfortunately, it is pretty inactive and useless these days and there are far better options.

The whole website is very outdated and it’s not even safe for use, but you can try it out if you don’t really manage to find anyone interesting on other dating platforms

For a younger audience, it is definitely worthless and I wouldn’t recommend anyone to spend money on membership on this platform.

I give it a 3 out of 5 and recommend you to stay away from it unless you really don’t have any success on other websites.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 13

  • Millions of active users all around the world
  • Has a great algorithm
  • Not really made for travel dating

Bumble is one of the most popular dating apps nowadays and it has over 100 million users all around the world.

It is mostly popular among the younger audience and it allows them to meet people who are up for a serious relationship, casual hookup, or for a travel buddy.

Over 90% of its users are between 20 and 33 years old, and there is almost an equal number of men and women on this platform.

There are also people of all sexual orientations, so you can easily find partners even if you are a member of the LGBTQ community.

Bumble is a dating app that is available both for Android and iOS devices and you can use it in every single country in the world.

The design is very fun and simple and you can easily like other people’s profiles and get in touch with them.

You can fill out several Q&As and questionnaires that will help the algorithm connect you with like-minded people.

Travel Dating Sites ([year]) - Meet, Travel & Date The Best 14

Unfortunately, no feature will allow you to connect with people who love traveling as much as you, but you can always state that fact in your description and start reaching out to people who have similar interests.

It can take some time, but there are so many users on Bumble that you will for sure be able to find your perfect match.

Bumble offers you to use a free profile and get in touch with many different people without any limitations, but you won’t have the access to special features and filters that can make your search for the perfect partner a lot easier.

As a premium user, you will get to pay 22 dollars per month and get access to all of the filters the platform has to offer and your whole experience will for sure be a lot more enjoyable and interesting.

It also allows you to become the gold user and it will make you pop up on other people’s homepages more often.

Can I change my location on Bumble?

Yes, you can change your location during your trips as much as you want.

If you find yourself in another city each week you can change the location and get in touch with the locals who will make your travel experience a lot more amusing.

Bumble is a great dating app and even though it was not strictly made for travel dating it can still be a great place for everyone who is looking for a partner.

Even though you have to pay for membership if you want to get access to all of the filters and features, it is not too expensive and can help you improve your experience immensely.

It also allows you to change your location while traveling, so you can move to another city each day and still get the opportunity to meet locals in that area.

This is a straight 5 out of 5 and I recommend it to everyone, especially the younger audience.

The 9 Best International Dating Apps For Finding Love Abroad

Swipe from anywhere.

female hands holding red mobile phone with many social media likes on pink background

Even if the meet-cute doesn’t feel quite as cinematic on your phone screen as it does the big screen, Hinge, Bumble, and other virtual platforms quite literally provide you with hundreds (if not thousands) of eligible bachelors and bachelorettes to swipe through on the daily. And while, sure, sometimes you’re swiping from your couch, you can also use these apps from an Airbnb in Rome, or your new sublease in Tokyo. Tapping into dating apps on an international scale can be a way to explore new cities and create connections that you might not make otherwise, whether you’re planning to stay abroad for the short term or forever.

“If you’re going to be moving to another country, that is a really daunting process, psychologically. Especially a country where you have relatively few connections,” says Jess Carbino, PhD, a sociologist who specializes in online dating. Connecting with others via apps is an easy way to get involved in a new community and “learn about the culture, the norms, [and] social conventions” in that area at the same time.

Meet the experts: Jess Carbino , PhD, is a sociologist who specializes in online dating. Morgan Anderson , PsyD, is a clinical psychologist and author of Love Magnet based in Bozeman, Montana. Gabriela Reyes , LMFT, is a relationship therapist based in Florida.

Beyond the obvious (it’s an easy way to meet new people), dating apps allow you to vet someone before you commit to an IRL meeting. “It’s an incredible tool to connect you with people that you would’ve never met before, and it allows you to feel a little bit more supported and safer, because you can get to know someone a bit before meeting them in person,” says Morgan Anderson, PsyD, a clinical psychologist based in Bozeman, Montana.

You might be thinking, “What now?” Finding the right online dating app for you can feel like just as much of a hurdle as dating itself, which is why Women’s Health did the work for you. Ahead, a comprehensive list of the best platforms for international dating, according to relationship therapists and experts.

tinder

Tinder is an OG in the international dating space, and not just because it’s available in 56 languages and across 190 countries. The platform’s Passport feature lets you search by city or drop your pin anywhere on the map, so you can start chatting with singles across the world before you’ve even arrived.

“You can change your location so that you are swiping in Paris or Delhi or Buenos Aires,” says Carbino. “Maybe you’re planning to move there, maybe you’re going on a trip there. [But] you have the capacity to meet people and be able to interact with people before you get there, which is really fun and exciting.”

  • Available in 19 countries
  • A massive pool of users
  • Easy function
  • Has a reputation for casual hookups, so might not be a fit for every user
  • More appearance-focused than apps like Hinge
  • Tinder Plus: $7.99 for one month, $4 per month for six months, or $2.67 per month for 12 months
  • Tinder Gold: $24.99 for one month, $12.50 per month for six months, or $8.33 per month for 12 months
  • Tinder Platinum: $29.99 for one month, $15 per month for 6 months, or $10 per month for 12 months

bumble

On Bumble, women are the only ones who can start the convo in heterosexual swiping dynamics, which can provide an added sense of safety and security when you're in a new place. And while typically, your phone GPS will set your in-app location, Bumble Premium users can even tap into Travel Mode and swipe in another city before their travels.

“One app I really like for international dating is Bumble, especially for women,” Anderson says. “I love the idea that you get to choose who you match with and you get to make the first move. That adds a feeling of safety, which is important when you’re international or not used to the country.”

  • Women start the convo
  • Prompts let you incorporate more personality into your profile
  • Can set Travel Mode pre-trip
  • You must send the first message (and receive a response) in 24 hours, or the match goes away
  • If you don't like making the first move, this isn't for you
  • Bumble Boost: $8.99 for one week, $16.99 for one month, $33.99 for three months, and $54.99 for six months
  • Bumble Premium: $19.99 for one week, $39.99 for one month, $76.99 for three months, and $229.99 for a lifetime

hinge

Hinge’s whole thing is that the app is designed to be deleted. The company prioritizes relationships over hookups, but it’s still affordable enough to be used casually. It’s also one of the more well-rounded platforms, as it allows users to incorporate photos, prompts, polls, and even voice memos so you can really get to know the other person before you even hit “like.”

“Genuine, long-term connections are what most people look for when using a dating app,” says Gabriela Reyes, LMFT, a relationship therapist based in Florida. “I believe Hinge encourages users to engage in meaningful conversations right from the start. It creates a safer space for those who know that they want something a little more serious.”

And while some apps, like Tinder, require a paid subscription to change your location, the setting is free on Hinge. You can simply drop your pin in whatever city you please—whether it’s your current destination or you’re prepping for an upcoming move.

  • You can get to know potential matches better via prompts
  • You can filter by age, religion, distance, ethnicity, and more
  • The algorithm is based on compatibility
  • You don't have unlimited likes unless you pay
  • The algorithm hides compatible matches behind a paywall
  • Hinge+: $29.99 for one month, $59.99 for three months, $89.99 for six months
  • HingeX: $59.99 for one month, $99.99 for three months, $149.99 for six months

eharmony

According to Anderson and Carbino, eHarmony is a top pick for international daters looking to find the real thing. The platform is in nearly every single country across the world, which makes it an accessible option for singles, while its focus on compatibility ensures you’re finding the right person, not just a person.

“If you’re looking for something serious—let’s say you’re ready to get married —one of the best things you could use is eHarmony, which also works internationally,” Dr. Anderson says. “It is so thorough. There are up to hundreds of questions that you can answer.”

  • There's a huge emphasis on compatibility
  • Available in nearly every country
  • Many users are looking for serious relationships
  • More expensive than other dating apps
  • The shortest membership option is six months
  • Premium Light: $65.90 per month for six months
  • Premium Plus: $49.90 per month for 12 months
  • Premium Extra: $35.90 per month for 24 months

hily

Hily is the new girl on the block, so to speak, but an up-and-coming one at that. What makes this platform so different from other mainstream apps is that it’s designed specifically for international dating. It not only has a global presence but allows you to connect with compatible singles across the world, no matter where you are.

“What’s so cool [about Hily] is that it’s specifically for international dating,” Anderson says. “There’s a lot of safety features on it as well, and you can make calls within the app [before meeting up].”

  • Lets you find matches anywhere
  • Includes a live-streaming feature so you can get to know your matches better
  • Offers icebreakers to start the conversation
  • More expensive than other platforms
  • Has a smaller pool of singles than other apps
  • Premium: $14.99 for a week, $74.99 for three months, $119.99 for one year

okcupid

OkCupid is available in a whopping 180 countries and can be accessed via app, mobile web, or your desktop. And while that alone is a bonus, according to Anderson, it also has a massive pool of singles. I’ll do the math for you: more people equals a higher chance you’ll actually meet someone you vibe with. “[The app] is a great option across the board because it has a very large user base, meaning there is likely someone out there for everyone,” Anderson explains.

Much like eHarmony, OkCupid places a large emphasis on data-backed compatibility so users “may experience finding better, more suitable fits in terms of what they are looking for in a match or partner,” Anderson adds. After all, the brand’s entire slogan is “match on what matters.”

That’s what makes the platform so meaningful and effective. Users are required to answer questions that range from more serious deal breakers to light-hearted topics. That data goes into pairing the individuals.

  • Cheaper than eHarmony, but offers similar benefits
  • There's an incognito mode
  • Larger focus on compatibility than other apps
  • Not the best platform if you're looking for a more casual relationship
  • You have to pay for more features
  • Basic: $29.99 per month, $19.99 per month for three months, $14.99 per month for six months
  • Premium: $39.99 per month for one month, $26.99 per month for three months, $19.99 per month for six months
  • Incognito: $19.99 per month for one month, $14.99 per month for three months, $9.99 per month for six months

meetic

While only available in 21 countries across Europe, Meetic has long been a chosen platform across the pond, which makes it an excellent choice if you’re heading that way.

“If I were in Europe, I would try Meetic. It would be a fun app to use because it was originally a European, namely French, brand,” Carbino says, adding that “Meetic’s algorithms are very strong in terms of matching individuals on the basis of their profiles.” That is, after all, the whole point.

The app was acquired by online dating giant Match (which also owns Hinge, Tinder, OkCupid, and more) but unlike its more mainstream counterparts, Meetic also offers IRL events that could get you out and about in your new international community. Plus, there are live coaching sessions so you can get personalized dating support to up your romance game.

  • Has a wide range of search criteria to help you find the right match
  • The app features audio prompts and live rooms
  • You can get personalized, live dating advice
  • Available exclusively in Europe
  • 29.99 € for one month, 59.99 € for six months (approximately $33 for one month, $65 for two months)

zoosk

Zoosk is another great pick for younger and older users, according to Anderson. “Most of its user base is made up of millennials, but there’s also a Zoosk Seniors option that is great for older individuals who may be coming back into the dating scene after a divorce, and are open to meeting a match in a fun way,” she says. “One thing that’s neat is the live-streaming feature, which allows users to stream videos. It’s available in a ton of countries, too!”

Unlike some platforms that match you based solely on compatibility (i.e. your age range, religion, ethnicity preferences, etc.), Zoosk’s algorithm learns about your likes and dislikes and adjusts your options based on that. Sounds promising, right? It’s available across more than 80 countries and offers 25 different languages, so you can communicate around the world.

  • You get daily match recommendations
  • The algorithm notices who you like and don't like, and adjusts suggestions accordingly
  • There's a live-stream feature
  • Some users complain that the app interface isn’t the easiest to navigate
  • You can't message a match until you've paid for a subscription

badoo

Badoo is actually one of the most global-friendly dating apps out there, and comes highly recommended by Carbino. With availability in over 190 countries, as well as 47 language options, the possibilities are endless. And while the platform already has a whopping 12 million active users, it’s on the climb. According to market research, it has an estimated one million new subscribers every week.

“Badoo’s long history as one of the first dating apps positions it as an early mover in the industry,” says Cambino. “[It] also has interesting features related to proximity, such as ‘bumped into’ or ‘people nearby.’”

These features make it especially great for new residents or visitors who are looking to meet people in close proximity. It quite literally notifies you to anyone passing by, which can easily translate to an IRL meet-up if that’s what you’re looking for, too.

  • Can match with people in your direct vicinity
  • There are video and voice-chatting features
  • Offers advanced filters
  • Features are limited, unless you upgrade to a paid subscription
  • Might not be the best option for serious relationships
  • $12.99 for one month, $31.99 for three months, $47.99 for six months, $79.99 for a lifetime membership

How do I choose the best international dating app for me?

icon

Think about how much you’re realistically looking to spend and consider that when downloading dating apps. While plenty of apps allow you to swipe for free, others are difficult to use without upgrading to a paid subscription tier.

Your desired type of relationship

While there are all types of people (looking for all types of relationships) on each app, some are geared more towards casual relationships while others prioritize serious connections. “If you’re ready for marriage, you might consider eHarmony. Looking for something potentially serious? Hinge or Bumble are great options,” Anderson says. “For something more casual or fun, Tinder is always a great option.”

Video-calling capabilities

If you don’t have immediate plans to visit the city or country you’re swiping through, you might want to choose an app with video calling. That way, you can get to know these international singles before moving or visiting the destination.

Cultural compatibility

If cultural compatibility is an important bullet point on your search for a relationship, “look at apps that either cater to a specific cultural background” or try one with “a diverse international user base, like Hinge,” says Reyes. “This can make finding a partner who shares your cultural values and traditions easier. It can also create a space where there’s already something big in common. It’s easier to create conversation.”

The 17 Best Dating Sites and Apps

It's time to meet your match.

best dating sites

Okay, so you're finally thinking about getting back into the  dating scene —but you want the chance to scope out your prospects from the comfort of your own home before you actually meet anyone IRL. And that's totally fair! Going on blind  dates  can feel terrifying, so it's nice to know at least a little about who you're meeting up with. And relying on your friends for a love match doesn't always pan out in the end. Luckily, there are a  ton  of dating apps and websites that will help you get started—and I've rounded up a few of the best dating sites and apps right here.

People find love every 14 minutes on eHarmony, so the odds are very much in your favor. You can either start a free trial, use the  free site , or purchase one of the site's subscription plans. eHarmony promises that you'll receive possible matches within minutes of completing your dating questionnaire, so the prospects literally come to you.

try eharmony

Match.com has pioneered the online dating scene since its launch in 1995, and it's not hard to see why. Simply select your gender, the gender you're looking to match with, your preferred age range, and  voila!  You can start seeing all of the available singles in your area right then and there.

try Match.com

If finding a partner that shares your Jewish faith is a top priority, consider checking out Jdate. You can even find matches anonymously thanks to the site's LookBook feature, which allows you to leave a heart on the profiles that you feel would be a good fit. If both of you "heart" each other, you'll be notified of the mutual attraction.

Hinge calls itself "The Dating App Designed to Be Deleted," so that's promising right from the outset! It boasts an entire Hinge Lab Team that works behind the scenes to perfect the science behind online dating. The app uses your location to find potential matches in your area and asks each user to complete a series of prompts rather than relying on the usual questions. The end goal is to find a serious relationship rather than a casual fling.

While Bumble has expanded into the business world recently with  Bumble Bizz,  it got its start as a plain old dating app. The app lets women make the first move, and lets you add up to six photos  and  link your Instagram and Spotify pages to make your profile look more official. After you complete your profile, the app works much the same as some of the others on this list—simply swipe to find your preferred people!

OkCupid uses both a website  and  a handy app, so you can find matches from your computer or straight from your phone if you prefer. It's considered the best free dating site out there, and has the numbers to back it up. The site boasts more than 91 million matches every year, and users go on an average of 50 thousand dates every week.

try OkCupid

Coffee Meets Bagel

If the name "Coffee Meets Bagel" sounds familiar, it's probably because you saw it on  Shark Tank.  Founded by sisters Soo, Dawoon, and Arum Kang, the ladies-first app wants to make sure that you actually  see  all your matches, so they deliver six matches who have already liked your profile at noon every single day. After discovering that men were twice as active on dating apps than women were, the founders worked with women what they  actually  wanted—and Coffee Meets Bagel is the result.

try Coffee Meets Bagel

Her prides itself on being the #1 dating app and safe space for LGBTQ+ and queer folks who are looking for love—and it's currently over eight million users strong. It allows users to join smaller community-focused group chats, find singles within their area, or just make a few new friends. There are also free  and  premium paid-for versions of the app.

Happn is a location-based dating app that's designed for you to meet-cute with the singles that you already cross paths with throughout your day. The app uses your location to show you a personalized timeline of singles who frequent the places that you already go—or who are in the same room as you swipe.

If your least favorite thing about dating is wading through awkward get-to-know you conversations with strangers, then XO might just be the solution you've been looking for. The app turns up the social aspect of dating with fun games and conversation starters that give users a fun, stress-free way to get to know each other before diving into more romantic discussions.

Pickable isn't the only female-focused dating app on the market, but it does take the premise to the greatest extreme. While apps like Bumble give women the power of making the first move, Pickable goes a step further by letting women swipe anonymously—you don't need to upload a picture, include your name, or even create a profile on the app to browse the men who are available to meet there. When you do feel like being seen and letting dudes on the app request chats, you can add a photo temporarily and set a time limit. During that time, you're "pickable," and after the clock runs out, your picture will be taken down again. It's ultimate, total control for women in the app-based dating scene.

try Pickable

In terms of sheer numbers, Badoo leads the way in the dating app world. Badoo's high number of users—521 million and counting—is thanks to a combination of factors, from being early to the game (it launched in 2006) to being available in several countries around the world. By 2011,  Wired UK  was already describing Badoo as a "mass phenomenon" in Brazil, Mexico, France, Spain, and Italy. In 2017, the app underwent a massive redesign and now brands itself as being for more than just dating, making it a strong option for people just looking to make platonic friends, too.

Raya is known as the "celebrity dating app," but you don't technically have to be a celebrity to join. Still, it  is  ultra-exclusive and, unlike most dating apps, requires an application to join. According to Raya's website, "Anyone interested in joining must fill out an application." And don't expect the admission process to be easy. Only about  8 percent of applications are accepted , which is lower than the rate of admission to some Ivy League universities. If you are granted admission to the Raya community, you're expected to pay $8/month in membership dues for access to the app.

MeetMindful

If you're looking to meet someone who shares your life philosophy and overall vibe and said philosophy and overall vibe is all about mindfulness and holistic wellbeing, then MeetMindful might just be the app you've been waiting for. Niche dating apps and websites are nothing new, from religious-based options like Christian Mingle and J-Date to lifestyle-driven hubs like the much-mocked FarmersOnly.com. MeetMindful just takes that basic, tried-and-true concept and brings it firmly into 2020 with a lifestyle category that's much more likely to speak to urban millennials today.

try MeetMindful

We all know the struggle of selecting the perfect set of photos for a dating app—can a few photos really represent you?—so what if we took all that snap judgement and hot-or-not BS out of it? Gone is the concept of swiping right or left based on looks; instead, S'more users first establish connections based on mutual interests. How it works: Each day you'll receive recommended profiles based on your previous activity on the app (the algorithm takes into account the kind of people you swipe 'yes' to the most), but the matches' photos are blurred and only become visible when you engage with the profile more. Whether that's asking the other person a question, or sending them a "wink" to let them know you're interested, the photo will slowly become more discernible as you get to know each other.

For many modern daters, the word “Tinder" is accompanied by the Darth Vader theme song. The truth is, no app embodies the “necessary evil” aspect of swiping the way Tinder does. And it’s not even Tinder’s fault: As a pioneer of the current dating app format, Tinder’s utter ubiquity means everyone has an opinion about it. And because the dating rigamarole kind of sucks in general, that means a lot of people have  negative  opinions about it. But you have to hand it to Tinder, they really did change the game. The OG features users love? The bio, which depending on what users choose (a lyric, a favorite motto) can be used to spark conversations, and the radius feature, which allows users to find people in their area—or not their area.

Feeld is an app for people who know what they want. It describes itself as a place to “meet open-minded couples and singles near you,” making it the premiere app for  unicorns  and those who want a more openly kink-friendly app experience. While that may sound pretty niche, there are plenty of pros that the average dater can appreciate. Knowing that all potential partners are looking for hot, fun people to hookup with in a judgement-free zone, means that you can skip over those awkward first few dates and early-sex convos. Plus, if you end up with someone long term, you know that he or she is fully aware of your kinks and interests—right from the start.

Finding a perfect travel buddy is always difficult. But, having a travel buddy can make the trip more enjoyable and less lonely. It helps to have someone to split the expenses with, so you can save up for your next trip. A travel partner also minimizes risks associated with traveling alone. GAFFL (www.gogaffl.com) can be a great addition to this list. It matches up travelers with similar travel plans and ensures the safety of travelers through their well-built verification process.

The 5 best dating apps in 2024

D ating? In this economy? If you're hesitant to put yourself out there, you're not alone. One random survey of 2,000 Americans conducted in December 2023 found that some adults -- 37% of those surveyed -- are going on fewer dates due to things like high expenses. That might be why online dating apps like the recently updated Bumble (more on that below) are so popular these days.

Dating apps make it easy to meet new people and make meaningful connections without all the stress, time, and money that can come with bad matches, blind dates, or meeting people at spendy social functions. The best dating apps are ones that eventually get deleted off your phone altogether -- but before you get to your "happily ever after," you have to find the right app for you.

And with so many dating apps to choose from (do you  steer clear of paid apps  or look for premium subscriptions with extra features? Are some apps better for the LGBTQIA+ community? Are you looking for certain shared interests or beliefs?), that can feel like a challenge. To help you make that first move confidently, we outline the top dating apps of 2024 and why you should sign up below.

  • How we review products and services

What is the best dating app in 2024?

If you're ready to put your best foot forward into the world of online dating, these are the apps you should consider putting on your phone .

  • Best overall dating app: Hinge
  • Best for promising connections: Bumble
  • Best for long-term dating: eHarmony
  • Best free dating app: OKCupid
  • Best video dating: Match

From classic mainstays to newer dating apps, here is everything you need to know about the top five dating apps of 2024.

Best modern dating app overall : Hinge

When it comes to finding long-term (or short-term, live your life) love, Hinge has really climbed to the top of our list in recent years. Hinge doesn't disclose how many people use the mobile app to find connections, but according to one 2022 survey,  39% of adults aged 18 to 29 used it at least once.

Hinge stands out from the crowd by being more than just a swipe-based app. Users reach out using likes and comments instead, which can lead to more meaningful connections since this forces users to be more deliberate and thoughtful when sending someone a like.

Due to Hinge's growing popularity, it's becoming increasingly easy for gay, lesbian, and nonbinary users to find like-minded or open-minded individuals. Since Hinge is more of a relationship-oriented app; for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, it can offer a refreshing alternative to more casual apps such as Tinder or Grindr.

Hinge is free to use, but users can unlock additional features, such as unlimited likes, with a premium account, which costs between $33 and $50 per month.

Pros:

  • Detailed profile options that let users stand out such as personal details and dating intention information.
  • An award-winning algorithm (Nobel-prize-winning Gale Shapley algorithm ) is used to help users find potential matches.
  • Hinge's popularity and status as a relationship-oriented dating app makes this a great pick for anyone interested in something more long term, regardless of gender identity or sexual preference.
  • Voice prompts, video prompts, and prompt polls give users plenty of room to express themselves.
  • Likes and comments can lead to more meaningful connections than other swipe-based mobile apps.

Cons:

  • Features like weekly "roses" ("super likes" by another name) can feel a bit tacky.
  • Some potential matches are walled off as "standout profiles" and can only be reached with a rose, which can feel like a limiting factor for some users.
  • Premium accounts (Hinge Plus and Hinge X) are expensive.

Best for promising connections : Bumble

If a traditional swipe-based app is more your speed, we recommend adding Bumble to your phone. This dating app is all about shaking things up a bit when it comes to what people expect from a dating app.

One way Bumble goes about this is by offering more than just romantic connections. In addition to Bumble date, there are two other modes for interested users: Bumble BFF for making friendships and Bumble bizz for networking with potential professional connections.

The other standout feature of Bumble is the way communication works. Up until very recently, women were required to make the first move on Bumble, which was meant to take away some of the concern women and female-presenting people may have on other dating apps where unsolicited messages can be a problem.

On May 6, 2024, Bumble announced a new feature to cut back on some of the anxiety and uncertainty that came with the app's women-first approach to matchmaking. Opening moves is a new feature that gives women the option to set a question prompt that anyone can reply to. This new addition doesn't change the dynamics of Bumble too much -- opening moves aren't required -- but it's a welcome addition that can alleviate some matchmaking stress. This also extends to non-heterosexual dating as well: In nonbinary or same-gender matches, either party can set or respond to an opening move.

Bumble is free to use, but users also have the option of paying for Bumble premium ($35) and premium plus ($50) subscriptions for perks like unlimited swipes, a backtrack option, and access to other trending users (a premium plus exclusive).

  • The "ladies first" approach to matchmaking can be refreshing for women looking for heterosexual romance who want the ability to pick and choose who they talk to.
  • Bumble's new "opening moves" gives women the option to add a question prompt to their bios, which anyone can respond to when striking up a conversation. This optional feature takes some of the pressure away from women  always needing to make the first move -- a win in our (little black) book.
  • Bumble has full accessibility for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, where anyone can make the first move -- just be aware of that 24-hour timer.
  • Additional features like audio and video calls can help people get to know one another more easily in those early days and weeks.
  • Matches are lost if a message isn't sent within the first 24 hours of connecting with someone.
  • Extra features like unlimited likes come with a hefty price point thanks to Bumble's not-terribly-budget-friendly premium plans.

Best for long-term dating : eHarmony

Going strong since its launch in 2000, eHarmony is a mainstay in the world of dating apps thanks to its comprehensive approach to bringing people together.

If you don't like filling out a detailed profile, maybe check out other mobile apps on our list first, because eHarmony starts users off with a compatibility quiz full of 80 questions. These help clarify details such as user likes and dislikes, communication styles, and what an ideal match might look like.

Users are then scored on their quiz results, with these numbers determining other potential matches. Find someone with a high enough compatibility score and you may be in luck.

Until recently, eHarmony had limited options for LGBTQIA+ users interested in online dating. But in 2023, after consulting with the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, eHarmony rolled out a big update with new inclusivity features. These included an expanded list of gender identities such as agender, bigender, genderfluid, transgender, nonbinary and more. There is also now the option to select whether you're interested in dating people who identify as men, women or nonbinary.

A basic eHarmony membership is free, but premium memberships are available: premium light six-month plan ($66 per month), premium plus 12-month plan ($46 per month), and premium extra 24-month plan ($36 per month). Since you're paying for at least six months of premium features at a time, we recommend getting started with a free membership before determining whether a premium account is right for you.

  • eHarmony's detailed approach to matchmaking, including the 80-question compatibility quiz and scoring system, can be great for those who know what they want and are ready for long-term commitment.
  • According to eHarmony, users find love on its app every 14 minutes , which at the very least indicates users will have options once they sign up.
  • Pricing information can be confusing. Users aren't informed about eHarmony's tiered premium plan setup until after making an account and completing the compatibility quiz.
  • Although there are relatively new inclusivity features for a more positive LGBTQIA+ dating experience, user feedback suggests that eHarmony is still very limited for gay, lesbian, and nonbinary users due to an outdated matching algorithm and majority heterosexual user base.
  • Some notable features, like being able to see all of another user's photos, are locked behind the premium paywall.
  • Canceling your eHarmony account could be easier -- users have to reach out to customer care from the eHarmony website to start the process.

Best free dating app : OKCupid

If you want a quality mobile app that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to use all of the best features, we recommend OKCupid. Users can create an account, upload photos, and send messages to potential matches with a free account (other users will have to swipe right on your profile as well to read your message, however).

While not specifically geared towards the LGBTQIA+ population, OKCupid does have more inclusive features than many other apps. OKCupid was the first dating app to let users list their personal pronouns, for example, plus there are more than 20 gender identities one can select when building their profile.

Offering users a match score and questionnaire similar to eHarmony's compatibility quiz (although less time-consuming), OKCupid uses user info to find potential matches. OKCupid is also a great dating app for inclusivity: the mobile app lets users choose from 13 sexual orientations and 22 gender identities.

OKCupid has a free tier as well as several paid subscriptions: OKCupid basic ($30 per month), premium ($40 per month), and incognito ($20 per month), the last of which lets you stay active while only showing up for other users who you've liked or messaged.

  • Getting started with a free account is relatively quick and easy.
  • User-friendly mobile app and website.
  • Various inclusivity features make OKCupid a good app for gay and lesbian users looking for a dating pool that doesn't solely cater to heterosexual relationships.
  • Broader and more diverse dating pool than many other apps, which means transgender and nonbinary users might have better luck making meaningful connections through OKCupid.
  • A great place for gender-nonconforming people or those with sexual orientations that fall outside of the norm for other, more traditional dating apps.
  • Potential matches need to swipe right on your profile as well in order to read your messages.
  • Subscriptions are automatically renewed unless canceled manually.

Best video dating : Match

One of the oldest dating sites around, Match has been bringing people together online since its launch in 1995. Setting up an account is super easy: no long quizzes or requirements to fill out every prompt before you can start matching with people (you can come back to add more prompts on your own time).

Match also offers a few features that make connecting with new people online easier than ever, including a matching algorithm that connects people based on gender identity and sexual preference in addition to location.

There is also a video chat feature that becomes available once you connect with someone. Additionally, users have access to Match-approved in-person events like hikes, food tours, and speed dating get-togethers.

Like all of the best dating apps on our list, Match offers a free plan as well as two paid subscriptions: standard ($35 per month) and premium ($40 per month).

  • Unlimited likes for free users.
  • More than 20 gender identities to choose from when you first sign up, making for a more inclusive dating experience overall.
  • Users have the right to cancel immediately at any time with no hassle.
  • Profiles may have limited or incomplete info since Match doesn't require you to fill everything out before matching with people.

Bread and bagels at The Works Cafe in downtown Portland. Photo by Aimsel Ponti

From New York-style boiled bagels to Montreal-inspired wood-fired ones, there’s lots of great bagels in southern Maine and several shops have the accolades to back that up.

In 2023, Bon Appetit named bagels from Rose Foods and Rover Bagel among the best in the country.

Two years before that,  Food & Wine Magazine put Rover, Forage and Scratch Baking Co. on its list of best bagels in the U.S.

Whether you like yours toasted with cream cheese or as the bread for your breakfast sandwich, you can find plenty of styles and flavors from Biddeford to Brunswick.

BEACH BAGELS

The offerings at Beach Bagels include a French toast and marble bagel, and the cream cheese menu comprises spreads like strawberry, olive and honey walnut. Along with breakfast sandwiches, Beach Bagels has hearty breakfast options like omelets and pancakes. Best of all, you’re steps away from a beach stroll. Just don’t let the seagulls steal your bagel. WHEN: 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily WHERE: 34 Old Orchard St., Old Orchard Beach. beachbagels.yolasite.com ______________

Dutchman’s opened in 2022 as a pop-up housed at Nomad pizza in Brunswick’s Fort Andross building. It’s since become a permanent fixture there and uses the pizzeria’s wood-fired ovens to bake its bagels. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled bagels come in plain, roasted garlic, poppy and a bagel-of-the-day flavor.

WHEN: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday to Sunday WHERE: Fort Andross, 14 Maine St., Brunswick. dutchmans.me ______________

FORAGE MARKET

Making bagels at Forage Market involves a two-day aging process. The bagels are naturally leavened with wild yeast starter and baked next to a hardwood fire. There are usually five flavors available, including sesame and garlic. Breakfast sandwiches (including vegan options) are available. Forage also has a location in Lewiston. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 123 Washington Ave., Portland. foragemarket.com _____________

MISTER BAGEL

There are 10 or so Mister Bagel locations in Maine, including South Portland and Falmouth. It all began with the Portland location, which was the first bagel shop to open in Maine. The late Rick Hartglass started Mister Bagel in 1977, and it is still a family business. Music fans will appreciate the breakfast sandwich menu, which includes The David Bowie (bacon, egg and American cheese), the Jimmy Buffett (egg with roast beef and cheddar) and The Lady Gaga (avocado, salt and pepper, with or without egg).

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to noon Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to noon Saturday and Sunday WHERE: 599 Forest Ave., Portland. misterbagelforestave.com ______________

At Rose Foods, the menu varies depending on the day, but there are usually six to eight flavors available. For example, should you pop in on a Friday, you’ll find a poppy and onion bialy (a cousin of the bagel that is not boiled). Rose Foods also makes a number of bagel sandwiches, including the Classic Nova with Nova lox and the Classic Whitefish. Advertisement

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily WHERE: 428 Forest Ave., Portland. rosefoods.me

______________

ROVER BAGEL

At Rover Bagel, you’ll find wood-fired plain, poppy, sea salt, sesame and everything bagels available most of the time, and the spread game here is strong with cream cheese options like lemon-thyme-honey cream and chili-garlic.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 10 West Point Lane Suite 10-204, Biddeford (Pepperell Mill). roverbagel.com

SCRATCH BAKING CO.

You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced the line of devoted fans waiting for Scratch Baking Co. to open, especially on weekend mornings. Along with the popular Maine sea salt, plain and other everyday flavors, Scratch has a daily special bagel. There’s honeyed rosemary on Wednesday and jalapeno cheddar on Thursday. Scratch is also famous, at least to locals, for its P-Cheese spread. It’s a pimento cheese recipe made with cheddar, mayo, roasted red peppers and seasoning and was passed down to co-owner and head baker Allison Reid by her grandmother, Mern.

WHEN: 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to noon Sunday WHERE: 416 Preble St., South Portland. scratchbakingco.com ___________

THE MAINE BAGEL

The Maine Bagel is a drive-thru with several breakfast and other kinds of sandwiches available. With a bagel list that features egg and bialy among the standards, the family-owned spot is the perfect place to stop on your way to Pine Point Beach. The Maine Bagel really shines with a dozen kinds of cream cheese spreads, including raisin-walnut, lox, strawberry, cranberry-nut and bacon-chive.

WHEN: 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. WHERE: 117 Route 1, Scarborough. themainebagel.com Advertisement

THE WORKS CAFE

The Works Cafe is an institution on the edge of the Portland’s Old Port. It opened in 1990 as Bagel Works before it changed its name in 2002. The original shop in this regional chain opened in Manchester, Vermont, in 1988, and there are 11 locations around New England, though just the one in Maine. Gone are the ’90s-era banana-walnut bagels and cold pizza cream cheese, but The Works Cafe is still a reliable place to grab a salt, multigrain or cinnamon raisin bagel, among others. The menu also has bowls, sandwiches and smoothies.

WHEN: 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily WHERE: 15 Temple St., Portland. workscafe.com
