Jasmine van den Bogaerde, known by her stage name Birdy (born 15 May 1996) is a singer-songwriter hailing from Lymington, Hampshire, UK.
Birdy has achieved remarkable success in her youth, winning the national competition Open Mic UK in 2008 (aged 12), an offshoot of the Live and Unsigned competition, beating over 10,000 other competitors to achieve the main prize. In 2011, her cover version of Bon Iver's song "Skinny Love" peaked at number 17 in the UK Singles Chart, with BBC Radio 1 DJ Fearne Cotton selecting the song as her "Record of the Week." Her eponymous debut album released on Atlantic Records, which featured cover versions alongside one original track, achieved great commercial success, reaching No. 13 in the UK, No. 40 in Ireland and number one in Belgium, Australia and the Netherlands.
Her musical style of tender, emotive vocals accompanied by her delicate playing on the piano make for an endearing listen. Her heartfelt covers mostly focus on music by indie artists such as The Postal Service and The XX, offering gentle interpretations that sound full of innocence, with the sparse production allowing her haunting voice to shine. Similarities with her music can be found with the likes of Joanna Newsom, Adele and Lana Del Ray.
Her release "Fire Within" (2013) achieved mostly positive responses, with the album written in collaboration with songwriters Ryan Tedder, Dan Wilson and Mumford and Sons pianist Ben Lovett. At the 2014 BRIT Awards, she was nominated for Best British Female Solo Artist and also won the title of Best Female Solo Artist International in the 2014 Echo awards. As well as her album releases, Birdy has also contributed many songs to film soundtracks, including "The Hunger Games" with her single "Just a Game" and three songs she contributed to the soundtrack of "The Fault in Our Stars." She also received her first Grammy Award nomination with her contribution to the song "Learn Me Right" with Mumford and Sons, which featured in the soundtrack for the film "Brave."
Live reviews
Bon Iver has established himself as a great singer-songwriter but to listen to him I have to really be in a Bon Iver mood. But I am almost always down to listen to, Jasmine van den Bogaerde or rather by her better known name, Birdy. You would think that a slower, piano version of ANY Bon Iver song could be good, but she truly has a voice of an angel. The first time I heard her live version of Bon Iver’s “Come On Skinny Love,” I had never felt so at peace. Her whole performance was from her self-titled album, which consists of her interpretation of other songs. Technically they are covers, but the way she has redone them, they seem like completely new songs. The ambiance of her shows are consistent with the music that she sings. There is a spotlight on her and her piano, the house lights remain dimmed, and decorating the stage are a number of white candles. And just as her music is, she is very mild mannered and soft-spoken. When she spoke to the audience to thank them for their support, it was very hard to hear, but that could also have been due to the cheers.
Having heard her live, and really enjoying all the covers that she has done, I really look forward to more of her original songs, and then seeing those live.

Set in a modest stage setting, quite simple, allowed you to focus on Birdy. Her voice was crystal clear and the clarity was if you were listening to her CD'S.
The backing band deserve a mention, providing just the right amount to keep the whole show balanced.
Birdy really is worth seeing and a great example that you don't need to hide behind flamboyant backdrops and lighting.
Overall, I'd say First Class and treat yourself to this new and talented singer songwriter.
Astounding. Truly exceptional vocal performance from both Birdy, and the opening act Dan Owen. Birdy did a great blend of her older material with songs from the new album, all were paired with a great band and dazzling lights in front of a plain backdrop. Dan Owen had great energy and stage presence, he is one to look out for. Birdy is definitely someone you should see live.
Incredible.
Superb concert from start to finish! The support act (Dan Owen) was outstanding. Birdy captivated the audience from the moment she stepped on stage until her final bow. Her new material & some of her earlier songs were pitch perfect and performed at nothing less than the highest possible standard. A singer/songwriter/musician of the highest calibre. A must watch live act!!!!
The show last night was amazing, with Birdy putting together a very stripped down, straight-to-the heart performance. I'm really glad I got to see her live, and especially see her perform a lot of her songs from her eponymous album, including Skinny Love, People Help the People and White Winter Hymnal. Her voice is great live and definitely sounds ethereal and timeless...
Saw Birdy in Southampton- it was AMAZING!! she played lots from her new album which was good and then a couple of old classics. The lighting was really cool and she even did a cover of Kate Bush's 'Running up that hill' which was insane! The band with her were really impressive and the support act was really friendly and surprisingly talented!! Was such a good concert!
I have no words to let you know how i feel when i listen your music, its just my entire life on it...thanks for let me feel Alive when my soul is dieing...
The Day i can see you performance in person finally i ll say i have come thrue all my drems... never stop writting that Amazing words, never go away, you have the power to make people dont let them down...
Birdy's concert was great! She was on time and made a 1 and a half hour concert which was wonderful. Beautiful voice, beautiful songs and great sound.
Dan was also fantastic and a revelation. He should keep on writing songs and come back to Bcn.
I would recommend Birdy to anyone and would go again. I will go again if she comed back.
Thank you Birdy.
Love her, wish we could have hugged and gotten a photo like last year at the crystal. Small venues that allow artists to meet fans is where it's at.
Venue didn't have many exit points. It would be nice if you could access the stairs without having to fight through the crowd and go all the way around. Maybe two check points would be ideal.
It was an enthralling performance by Birdy and it was made even better with Charlotte Hatherley in her band.
The only thing that would have made the show better is if Birdy let Charlotte Hatherley sing at least a couple of her songs to open the show.

Birdy begins her tour in New York at Irving Plaza before heading to the west coast to perform at San Francisco’s August Music Hall and the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles . All three dates will serve as album release shows for her new record Portraits , which arrives on August 18th.
Over the course of a decade, Birdy has enthralled listeners with her one-of-a-kind vocals. On her first two albums Birdy and Fire Within she showcased her ability to transform an eclectic group of songs from other artists into devastatingly beautiful acoustic pieces. The power of which hinged on the heartwrenching and seemingly limitless range of her radiant vocals.
Her most recent albums have seen her emerge as an original singer/songwriter more than capable of adding her own songs to the pantheon of classics she’s covered in the past. Each new single from Portraits reveals her embrace of lusher and emotionally resonant pop. Including the euphoric “Paradise Calling,” which also just received a stunning music video to go along with it.

Live Nation Presale

The Belasco Presale
A venue presale for The Belasco date in Los Angeles is already underway! To access it, you’ll use the same Live Nation presale as above: LEGEND .
Official Platinum
The Official Platinum presale starts on Tuesday, July 25th at 10am local time ! You won’t need a presale code to participate in this Birdy presale, but you should expect higher ticket prices. Get more details on Official Platinum tickets below.
What Are Those Official Platinum Tickets?
If you’re seeing very expensive tickets that are not VIP, those are official platinum tickets. These tickets are very expensive and are offered well over the standard ticket prices. They’re the kind of ticket pricing that is unfair to fans. The Event Organizer(s) has priced these tickets according to their market value (aka dynamic pricing). In other words, ticket pricing can go up or down, and it usually goes up.
Artists can choose not to offer Official Platinum or limit the amount for charity purposes. The Cure , Pearl Jam and U2 have all been recognized as artists that don’t use these dynamic pricing tactics.
Official platinum tickets do not include VIP packages. The only positive thing about them is they make buying floor or front-row tickets to a high-demand concert very easy if you’re willing to shed the extra coin. They can be bought during a presale without a presale code (doesn’t always apply to Verified Fan). Availability and pricing for official platinum tickets are subject to change based on demand.
If money is not an object, you should definitely bank on the convenience of getting Official Platinum tickets.
Pro Tips When Buying Your Tickets
First, on the day of the presale or general onsale (whichever you prefer), login to your Ticketmaster account ( go to my account or sign in located on the upper right corner of the page ) at least 15 minutes ahead of the sale time. If you don’t have one, create one now .
Be sure to add your billing info (aka credit card info) before jumping into the digital queue for a quick check-out. Once the presale starts, remain in the digital queue. Only use one browser window because using multiple browsers or devices and multiple accounts with the same phone number can result in errors. Trust, it’s happened to us before! Don’t refresh your page, do be patient, don’t leave your page, do get those tickets!
What To Do If Tickets Are Sold Out?
If tickets sell out, your other option is to buy them via online resellers like VividSeats or StubHub. When all else fails, we prefer these resell options because both offer a 100% Guarantee. You can also purchase resell tickets through Ticketmaster’s resell program. Just search for the concert or event you want to attend , and see if they have any resell tickets available. We recommend you compare the three options and find out which works best for you.
Alternatively, you can hit it old school style and show up at the concert when the box office opens and wish upon a star that they release more tickets, or hopefully, another concert-goer has an extra ticket to sell at face-value or even giveaway for free. Trust, this happens more often than not! We’ve given away many tickets to sold-out shows simply because our +1 couldn’t make it.
Also, more standard tickets are often released via Ticketmaster 1-3 days leading up to the show date. We’ve seen it with Beyonce , Taylor Swift , Arctic Monkeys and many more! It’s a secret gatekeeped by many, but if you’re reading this, now you know! So be sure to set your calendar notifications!

Interview with Birdy: This record was made for stage and to perform to people.
In English , Interviews by indiespect 18. August 2023
Birdy has just released «Portraits», her fifth studio album. It opens a new chapter for the singer. The changes are visible when looking at the artwork and music videos, but also musically Birdy ventures into new waters. The result is a wonderful album that never wears out even after listening to it over and over. An interview had already been planned when she visited Zurich back in April 2023. Due to illness (not Birdy's), however, it unfortunately did not come to the personal meeting. But the time has come to catch up on overdue conversation via Zoom.
Editors are:
Tom Smith (vocals, guitar, keys) Russell Leetch (bass) Ed Lay (drums) Justin Lockey (guitar) Elliott Williams (synths, guitar) Benjamin John Power (synths)
Indiespect: I’m in love with your new album. The dynamics between upbeat songs and ballads is truly amazing. It holds so much strength in it. It also feels like a major shift for you in terms of how it sounds. Was it difficult for you to step into a new direction? Birdy: No, it felt like a natural transition from the last record, which was just so the opposite. It was a almost a folk record and very sad and intimate. I spent five years doing that and I just couldn't do anything similar again. I thought, I need to do something completely different. Also because we were in the lockdown I had missed playing live so much. This record was made for stage and to perform to people. And to have energy and movement.
This record really was made for stage and to perform to people. And to have energy and movement. birdy on «Portraits»
Indiespect: It must have been quite a special tour for you earlier this year, because it was supposed to be the tour for your last album «Young Heart». Because of the pandemic it got shifted between to records. How did it feel to be in between two albums and go on tour? Birdy: That was strange, actually. I was sad to not get to tour Young Heart properly, because I think that it actually really came to life live. It was really beautiful. But I had already sort of moved on into this other world and then going back was like: who am I? I don't know which person I am on stage (laughs). I really enjoyed playing the old songs, like really old songs from the first record. Just because people hadn't heard them for quite a long time and we hadn't toured for six years. People got really emotional. They might have listened to the records when they were 15 and then we'd grown up together. I enjoyed that on the tour a lot.
© Thibault-Théodore
A new era for Birdy has begun – also visually.
Indiespect: Are you planning to come back to Switzerland with a proper tour for «Portraits»? Birdy: I'd say, yeah. The plan is to tour, but we're just trying to work out where to start and we may go to America for a bit. It's difficult because we've just done an European tour. But I think we will and it's going to be more Portraits focused, obviously. We definitely want to do more live.
Initially, we weren't going to release Paradise Calling and I felt like this is a really special song on the record and I wanted to give it a chance to just be in the world before the album came out. Birdy on the release of the album
Indiespect: The album release was set for July and was pushed back for a month. What's the reason behind that decision? Birdy: That's true. I wanted to share a bit more of the record before it came out. Initially, we weren't going to release Paradise Calling and I felt like this is a really special song on the record and I wanted to give it a chance to just be in the world before the album came out. It's also other stuff. There's lots of moving parts and it just made sense to put it there.
«Paradise Calling» comes with a very artistic music video. The dance will go down in Birdy history with no doubt.
Indiespect: I saw a live performance of «Paradise Calling» at St. Johns Church in Kingston and it was a really stripped down version. Will you play a more piano based version on stage? Birdy: When it's with the band, it will be the version that's on the record. But when I'm by myself, obviously I can't play it like that. But I was surprised because all the songs are written, either starting on a synth or writing to drums. But all of them work really well on the piano and they sound really nice. It's nice to have that version of them as well. Indiespect: In interviews you told that you are interested in arts in general, also in painting. Was the darker and more mystical look of this record your idea? Birdy: You mean the photography?
He put me in a wig and a dress for the first picture that we did. He took a picture and I thought: this doesn't even look like me. That's just not it. birdy on developing the new imagery
Indiespect: Also the music videos. The whole look and vibe that is attached to it. Birdy: In the beginning of making this record I was more inspired visually than musically. I had an idea of how it would look and it was a bit more gothic and kind of Dickensian [a British TV series] , actually. I was inspired by PJ Harvey and Patti Smith . Then I met Thibault-Théodore, who is the photographer for the album cover and all the imagery. I made him lots of paintings because I couldn't explain how I wanted it to look. He was like: I think I know what you mean (laughs) . Then he put me in a wig and a dress for the first picture that we did. He took a picture and I thought: this doesn't even look like me. That's just not it. He was like: okay, take the wig off. Then we did another picture and he projected the one with the wig on top of it. Indiespect: Ah, that's what became the album cover in the end! Birdy: I just thought, that is so clever and so beautiful that he had that in his head and how it would fit together. I feel like the projection looks like me as a child. In my eyes, it looks like when I was young. And then, there is me as an adult – and I love that.
© Birdy via Twitter
Birdy not only writes beautiful songs but is also a skilled painter.
Indiespect: As an artist you released so many intimate and beautiful songs. Was it also a decision to create sort of a wall between you and the new Birdy because you didn't want to be seen as the sweet, fragile and vulnerable young singer anymore? Birdy: No, I don't think it was a decision. It's just not how I feel. I feel more confident in who I am and in my skin. So, that's just the feeling that's coming out. It's not that I don't want to be this fragile person anymore, maybe I'm just not so much anymore – which is nice. Sometimes the music was fragile, but I don't think I was actually as fragile as the music maybe seemed. I've always had a sort of inner strength that drives me, and I'm happy for it to be seen a bit more.
I don't think I was actually as fragile as the music maybe seemed. I've always had a sort of inner strength that drives me, and I'm happy for it to be seen a bit more. Birdy on her outside view
Indiespect: Once you said in an interview that you were quite serious when you were young because you were used to go on stage and to be surrounded by adults. In the meantime, you get to know your inner child as you grow older. Did you miss something because you were already on stage in you teenage years? Birdy: Yeah, I did. I was around lots of other people all the time and it's kind of scary. You don't really know who you are yet, and then you're in a very adult world. It's a lot of pressure to be putting out something that people are judging when you're still trying to find yourself. I took it all very seriously and thought this has got to be perfect. I was really scared of doing or saying the wrong thing. But now, looking back, I see that that's just what it takes to find out who you are. You have to make mistakes and do things that maybe aren't your favorite and then you work out what you love from that. Sometimes it was also hard not being with my family. But I'm also grateful to have the experience that I do at the age I am now. To have done five records and to have toured. That's really nice.

Indiespect: You are the daughter of an author and a concert pianist. Did you ever think about picking up another first instrument than the piano. Birdy: No, I wasn't allowed (laughs) . I just had a free piano teacher. I did learn the violin a little bit when I was young but then I gave up at thirteen. But no, listening to my mum play from when I was a baby, I was drawn to the piano and moved by it. I wanted to play and I couldn't keep away from it.
Birdy is 27 and just released her fifth studio record.
Indiespect: But as you said, you're not only writing your songs with the piano, right? Birdy: Yes, it kind of changes. Different instruments have different feelings and they make different songs. The guitar is much lighter and it's rhythmic compared to the piano. I always just end up writing sad songs on the piano (laughs). For this record I didn't really write with piano much at all. It was all synth and drum machines.
I always just end up writing sad songs on the piano. Birdy on her writing process
Peetree has returned to Birdy – and hopefully she lived happily ever after.
Indiespect: One last question that is not music related, just because that story was so sweet. You once adopted a little duck. Has there been another animal that you taught to swim or fly in the meantime? Birdy: No, she's a very special duck, I don't think there could be another. But she's still around. She went off into the wild and she came back this year and had babies. We've been feeding her every day and she comes into the house after being away for a year. She had eight ducklings, just the other day they hatched. There's five left, which is sad. They always get eaten. But she is doing well. (laughs) Indiespect: I'm so glad to hear that. Thank you for your time and all the best with your album. Birdy: Thank you so much. I hope we'll be back in Zurich, soon!

In a four-star review of the album, NME said: “‘Young Heart’ is a gorgeous album that perfectly captures the meandering journey that heartbreak takes you on. There are songs about sensing what’s looming on the horizon (“Watching satellites lying in the grass/ I know our days are numbered,” Birdy sings on the shuffling ‘Voyager’). Others are embroiled in the sorrow that descends when your love is gone: ‘Nobody Knows Me Like You Do’ finds the musician wrestling with the newly empty space next to her.”

Last August, Birdy—who you know best for her stunning cover of Bon Iver ’s Skinny Love , which she released at just 14 years old—released her fifth album, Portraits .
In 2012, Birdy’s eponymous debut album, packed with cover songs, hit #1 on the ARIA Albums Chart, with her takes on Skinny Love and Cherry Ghost ’s People Help The People constantly on the airwaves.
While Birdy is best known for her indie folk-driven sound, on last year’s Portraits , she embraced elements of synth and electronic-inspired pop music, releasing more straightforward pop songs rather than piano-based ballads. On her latest LP, Birdy cited influences such as David Bowie, Kate Bush, Madonna , and Prince while outlining the inspiration of a “ more Gothic feeling ” found in the music of PJ Harvey and Portishead .
On his return to Australia, Niall Horan commented in a press release, “I have said it many times, but I do mean it when I say that the times I have spent down under are some of the best periods of my life. I have had amazing shows in Australia and New Zealand, and I cannot wait to be back in 2024.
“My favourite thing in the world is being on tour. Performing my songs for my fans and sharing those incredible moments together are the reason why I write music in the first place. This is going to be my best tour yet, and I cannot wait to see all you ‘lovers’ in 2024.”
