Curacao holds the dubious distinction of being the major slave port in the Americas in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was a hub from which more than a half million enslaved Africans were sold on the docks and shipped to plantations in North and South America. Curacao also played a pivotal role in another major movement of people from one part of the world to another, one that offered opportunity rather than oppression.

In 1651, Curacao's Jewish Congregation was founded by twelve Sephardic families who came to the island seeking the freedom to practice their faith, as well as pursue economic possibilities. The Sephardic Jews fled Portugal with the entrance of the Inquisition, and by coincidence, the Low Countries - now The Netherlands and Belgium - had around that same time won their 80-Years War against Spain and Catholicism, by defeating the Spanish Armada. Being liberated from the Catholic kings subsequently allowed them to open their borders to non-Catholics. They assured the Jews that they would respect their desire for freedom of worship, which had been forbidden by the Catholic kings. The Jews that settled in the Low Countries, primarily in Amsterdam, were then sought out when the Dutch West Indies Company recruited colonists to settle on Curacao, many of the Sephardim followed the Dutch flag as this guaranteed them religious freedom.

Today in Curacao there are two Jewish congregations: the Sephardim, who practice reconstruction Judaism, and the Ashkenazim, who practice modern orthodox or traditional Judaism.

Your first stop is the Beth Haim Jewish cemetery, consecrated in 1659, it is the oldest Caucasian cemetery on the island and in the Western Hemisphere. The site is also a Curacao National Monument.

Then you will visit another historic site also created as a peaceful sanctuary, the Rooi Catootje plantation house. It dates to about 1820 and was originally known as "Rust en Vrede," which translates as "Rest and Peace." The house has been the property of the Maduro family since 1853, when S.E.L. Maduro brought it as a gift to his wife Rebecca Curiel from her parent's estate. The house has now been preserved as a museum.

Continue to the 17th-century plantation house Chobolobo, owned by a Jewish family, where Curacao liquor is produced. Tour the house and learn more about the family name and history. Before leaving take the opportunity to enjoy samples of this famous local product.

The final part of your excursion will end with a drive through the old Jewish neighborhood of Scharloo. Make a stop at a synagogue for an up-close look at religious life in Curacao. The Jewish faith has been practiced here without interruption since 1732 and one congregation itself is even older, having been established in 1651. The very fear of persecution is what drove many of Curacao's earliest Jewish residents to relocate to the island in the first place. They were rightfully more than a little guarded about their beliefs, even upon founding their congregation and building their synagogues nearly a century later.

Jewish Heritage of Curacao

Curacao has a fascinating Jewish history and the oldest Synagogue in the Americas, join an experienced guide who will explain in detail about the Jewish community on the island and visit historical places.

Gigi Jewish Heritage Tours

Visited 2230 times, 1 Visit today

Jewish heritage walking tours, upon request by Gigi Scheper. Since 1982, the year that the Synagogue celebrated their 250th anniversary, Gigi began helping out by giving tours. In 1997, she started working for Curacao’s only tour operator offering a Jewish Heritage Tour to the Holland America’s cruise ships. She said the experience gave her an enhanced appreciation for her Jewish background and the religion in general. Gigi was actually born in Amsterdam. Her father worked for the Royal Dutch Shell Company and was stationed in Holland for training at the time of her birth. The family returned to Curacao from Holland when she was 8 1/2 years old. On her tour you will be visiting the Jewish Historical Cultural Museum, which is adjacent to the Mikve Israel-Emanuel Synagogue. Gigi will tell you interesting facts about the artefacts on display. The tour will also take you to the Beth Haim Cemetery. Consecrated in 1659, it is the oldest Caucasian cemetery on the island and in the Western Hemisphere, the site is also a Curacao National Monument. Gigi will explain all about the symbols on the tombs. Another stop on the tour is a visit to the plantation house “Rooi Catootje”. It dates to about 1820 and was originally known as “Rust en Vrede,” which translates as “Rest and Peace.” The house has been the property of the Maduro family since 1853, when S.E.L. Maduro brought it as a gift to his wife Rebecca Curiel from her parent’s estate. The house has now been preserved as a museum. The tour takes about 3 hours and costs $55 per person.

Curacao Jewish Historical Tour

A must do experience for those interested in Jewish culture and history around the world. Emlyn from Island Experience Tours is the best! His knowledge of the island and history of the Jewish settlers in Curacao from hundreds of years ago is immeasurable. He took us to Mikve Israel Synagogue - world renown synagogue with sand on the floor, several Jewish cemeteries by my request and other museums related to Jewish history. Highly recommended.

curacao jewish tour

We of Island Experience are very pleased to hear that the tour was of the best experience of the island of Curacao. Indeed our Mikve Israel Synagogue is world renown and is the only one of the western hemisphere still in service today. We thank you for your response and hope to see you back on the island. Shalom !

Curacao is a lovely island and Willemstad is a beautiful city. It is very clean and safe and just a pleasure to walk through!

We booked a Jewish Heritage tour ($75 each) with Emlyn Pietersz of “One Curacao”—not Bounty Adventures as listed by Island Experience agency on our invoice. Emlyn’s “One Curacao” can be found on Facebook; he teaches sustainable tourism courses at the university, as he is quoted in books on the topic. He was very knowledgeable and gave us a 3-hour tour of the island. Emlyn took us to Bon Bini, the kosher distilling /wine factory a.k.a. Curacao of Curacao, built in 1896 (normally $12.50). We also visited Shaarei Tzedec (the 7th synagogue building constructed on the island). Of anywhere in the Western Hemisphere, Curacao has the oldest synagogue: Sephardic congregation Mikve Israel (1651, reconsecrated 1732) at Hanchi Snoa 29. It is in Punda, close to the National Archaeological Museum at 13 Johan van Walbeeckplein, Pietermaai. The original Reform congregation of 1864 was called Temple Emanuel and later joined with this reconstructionist congregation. Officially, 350 Jewish families are now registered in Curacao. Most earlier immigrants were Ashkenazi and interested in the reconstructionist conservative synagogue. The Portuguese had persecuted Jews into the late 18th c. (in Minas Gerais or Recife/ Brazil), who then escaped to Barbados and St Thomas. Others escaped the Spanish Inquisition in Curacao...hence, two Jewish congregations remain active on different parts of this island. After we visited Shaarei Tzedek in Mahaai (“Pleasure”), we passed Zuikertuin mall, Chuchubiweg /Alablancaweg from Rose St. to Number 10 (on Santa Rosaweg), a former Shabbat school-turned-brunch diner outside Salina—currently the financial sector. Emlyn then took us to Scharloo to see restored homes in the Jewish Quarter, flanking the Maritime Museum, and dilapidated homes on Bitterstraat (mural painted by Francis Sling, behind the abandoned owners’ of old Bon Bini). After passing Nieuwstraat, Pietermaai (hip jazz cafes) we saw Mikve Israel. It is a UNESCO heritage site, famous for its sand floors, just like ancient synagogues’ I saw of the Iberian Peninsula. Mikve Israel holds 18 scrolls and the four pillars, representing the matriarchs of Israel. The organ is distinct, and the wood pillars were originally masts of ships. Our tour ended after the museum inside the synagogue. Unfortunately, we were unaware & missed the walking tour of Willemstad in the morning with Emlyn. Also, the synagogue on the East end was open at limited times, so our tour departure was changed last-minute. If possible, I recommend avoiding the risk of altered tour/times by not booking on holidays or on Shabbat, starting Friday. In any case, our introduction to Jewish Curacao was meaningful and informative. Since there are no snack breaks, try having a full meal or refreshments before the tour. Finally, don’t forget to tip your guide, Emlyn!

Dear Anlily, We thank you for your review of the Curacao Jewish Heritage Tour. Emlyn Pietersz is a certified Jewish guide and whenever our clients booked the Jewish Heritage tour, they are very well pleased with the tour and the knowledge of Emlyn Pietersz on this topic. We apologize for the mistake on your Jewish Heritage Tour invoice, it would have been nice to immediately show us the mistake on the invoice, we could have change the name on the invoice, to be politically correct. Moreover we thank you for contacting us and wish you a pleasant day.

We booked a sunset cruise in Bonaire with them anf got a written confirmation. When we showed up at the boat the captain told us that there is no cruise because he never got my booking from Island Experience who acted as a sales representative for him. He told us that this was not the first time that this has happened. Island Experience confirmed that they didn't book the cruise with the boat. They could not explain why they sent me a confirmation and didn't book.

I will agree with some of the other reviews saying the booking was confusing. I was nervous about giving my credit card deposit via text but it worked out. We gave $100 deposit via credit card and paid the rest to our driver + tip. We did a private tour which I am so happy we did. It made the trip so much more personal. Our tour host was Lorraine and I highly recommend you ask/request her. She was wonderful!!!! She went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable and happy. our 10 year old son who has ADHD was with us and I thought he would be so bored. Lorraine made sure he had fun. The tour also included lunch which was wonderful. We had to make a detour from the originally planned lunch stop to accommodate for our sons food preferences and Lorraine chose a perfect spot.

curacao jewish tour

We booked the East and City Trip in Curacao for 17th November and when we met the organiser, we were told that it was not possible to visit the City due to an event. I am not sure why we were told this on the day when we booked it in advance. The organiser must have known the event was due to take place in the City prior to the tour. To inform us on the day is not acceptable. Additionally, we were not offered any sort of compensation given that half of the trip was cancelled. She told us that she was combining both the East and West trip, so we had the people who were going to the West of our Island on the same bus. This didn't make any difference to us, but what did concern us is the cancellation of the City trip without any prior warning. We paid $35 each for the East and City tour, but we were not offered any sort of refund or alternative, it was just assumed that we would accept the fact that half of the trip was not going to happen. The trip was therefore not as advertised. If they had said we could stay on the bus to go to the West part of the Island, we may have agreed to this as compensation. The driver was late and he kept saying there was traffic because of the event, but he must have known it was going to be busy! He kept moaning about the traffic and people in the City parking there. Nobody was interested in his moans. We got on the bus with the driver and the organiser stayed in Port. The bus was pretty grubby and in desperate need of a deep clean and an update. Even the seats were dirty looking. At our first stop, I was getting off the bus and nearly fell off it. The plastic step which was put down by the driver was on stones and because it was uneven, I wobbled and nearly fell down. My sunglasses fell to the ground and when I picked them up, both lenses were scratched, then one of the arms fell off. At this point, I got very angry and upset as I had bought the sunglasses for the trip and they were completely ruined. I walked away in disgust. I didn't even go on the liquor tour because I was so upset. I was also very angry at the driver as he should have ensured the step was secure before I stepped out. However, I said nothing to him. I could not even bring myself to speak to him. At the next stop I noticed that he was holding the step, but at this stage, I only trusted my partner to help me off the bus. The trip itself was pretty rushed and there wasn't a lot to it. There was very little in the way of dialogue from the driver as he spent much of his time talking to the passenger in the front seat in her own lauguage. This language was not English. We were told that the driver was very entertaining. This was not the case at all. He was rushing as he said he will take him an hour to get to the West of the Island and he had a bus full of people to take. My partner wanted to go to the West of the Island and asked him if this was possible. The driver asked my partner for $20 each and said that if we agreed to this he would not tell the office about this. We were not happy with this at all as we wanted to be up front and honest about it. Both of us wanted to speak to the organiser and didn't want to be ripped off by him. We declined this offer and we were dropped off near the City. I emailed the organiser when we returned from the holiday. I complained about the trip and my glasses being ruined because of nearly having a fall when stepping out of the bus and started corresponding with the organiser. I made her aware that I would disputing the payment on the basis of the trip was not as advertised and on the lack of duty of care to ensure passengers exit the bus safely. She did not accept any of what had happened and after further correspondence she called me a liar, a cheat and a racist. This was her final email as I then blocked her as her emails were getting aggressive, abusive and totally offensive. She offered $30 refund which I did not accept. I said that I would leave it with the credit card company to make a decision. To say that I am quite disgusted by these allegations is an understatement. I simply told her of our disappointment with the trip and our experience with the driver. I was not crtical of anyone, nor did I use abrusive or racial lanuage. The emails were quite aggressive, confrontational and highly insulting. There are poor reviews on here which I wish I had read prior to booking this trip. The rest of our cruise was fantastic as were the other trips on the other islands. Very disappointing, given that we will probably never return to this Island. The result of this poor trip was both of us were angry all day and felt that we were treated very poorly indeed. Not a good day in this port at all. It completely spoilt our day.

Oh my goodness, I frankly will not respond to this. To go through this again really gives me pain in my gut. I can not forget about the taxi driver who is so pleasant to work with and who stands for service, the taxi driver always will give a hand to help people getting out of the Van, and the Taxi driver was in front of everybody humiliated. None of the passengers on the tour has dealt with this lady, none of them. Thinking about this issue on that day is making me really sick, as I have worked 19 years in Tourism and never have believed to experience something like this, how human being are being treated like this. We prefer to lose some clients that will believe this lady but we will never tolerate racism, lies, insult just because she has a bad character. We can say that because the husband all the time has not say a word. I have the report of the Dutch couple and the other American couple on this tour and frankly it is not to be posted because it is too bad for this lady what is being told about her behavior on the tour. So we leave it till here. Today I have seen this review of this lady and it does not please me at all to read about everything that happened that day. Our company stands for quality, safety, and people are central in our company, clients and employees. Not money !

Mikvé Israel-Emanuel

The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel synagogue in Curaçao was consecrated in 1732. It is the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Americas. The synagogue connects you to Spanish and Portuguese Jewish roots that can be traced back to the Iberian peninsula of the 1500s. Worshippers come together for regular weekly Shabbat services Friday evenings at 6:30 and Saturday mornings at 10:00 as well as on all Jewish holidays.

The harbor and inner city of the island’s capital Willemstad were designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1997. The city features colorful and historical Dutch colonial architecture, which includes Mikvé Israel-Emanuel synagogue. It is one of the island’s prime historical monuments with its unique architecture, ancient mahogany furniture and magnificent chandeliers, gleaming silver and brass ornaments and symbolic sand floor. Immerse yourself in almost 400 years of history. The Mikvé Israel-Emanuel synagogue, where Jewish history and ritual meet Curaçao’s cultural history and monuments.
