Ab-Soul is Finally Ready to Share His Truth

By Paul Thompson

Paul Thompson

Photoshoot with rapper Ab-Soul who will be releasing his new album in December 2022. He was photographed in Carson, California on 11.26.22.

I n the parking lot of Anderson Memorial Park in Carson, California, just south of Compton and north of Long Beach, Ab-Soul chain-smokes Newports and speaks gently. We’re close to the houses he grew up in alongside his mother, aunts, and paternal grandparents. “I kinda like to call it the ghetto suburb,” the rapper, 35, says from the open back seat of a Tesla SUV. “Because it is a suburb, but it’s got all the other stuff, too.” And yet, as is typical of neighborhoods in the southern half of the county, it doesn’t look precisely like either: There are plenty of single-family homes, and some of the lawns sit pristine and manicured. But there are neglected stretches without commercial or residential development, and freeways snake in every direction, bisecting neighborhoods and pumping smog into the air.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

On the album’s cover , a young Ab-Soul — that would be Herbert Stevens IV — sits on the floor in overalls, a credenza full of records behind him and headphones dwarfing his toddler head while he claps and smiles at what he hears. He says this is representative of music’s centrality in his life, though not a typical scene.  “In my household, there wasn’t really music playing,” he explains, because the family would listen to songs all day while working in the record shop his grandparents owned. From the time he could move his shoulders to Off the Wall, he understood that what music he heard was governed by business concerns and consumer whims. It also meant that his relatives, experts though they were, didn’t have the time or inclination to guide him through new genres after hours. “Different artists would pay for in-store play,” he recalls. “If it was rap playing, it would be the clean version. I had to find hip-hop on my own.”

J Cole Brought A Knife To A Gunfight On '7 Minute Drill'

J. cole responds to kendrick lamar diss on hard-hitting ‘7 minute drill', future, metro boomin and kendrick lamar's drake diss is the number one song in the country.

Ab-Soul’s musical pursuits did not stay trapped inside. At a Carson park much like Anderson Memorial, he and his then-girlfriend, the late singer Alori Joh, were discovered at a talent show; that led to him signing with a small local label named StreetBeat when he had barely graduated high school. But it was the next contract that would reshape his life.  As Soul would rap on the introduction to 2007’s Long Term, TDE president Terrence “Punch” Henderson “saw more in [his] music than metaphors and punchlines.” The two formed a fast relationship, and Soul joined the label despite the thorniness of L.A. street politics. Years later, in his verse on Danny Brown’s “Really Doe,” he notes that he’s “paid by the Bloods” despite being “raised by the Crips.” When I ask him if his signing with TDE drew any sideways looks on his part of Carson, he says, “For sure — but I felt like the scope was larger. We saw how red and blue makes green, if you will.”

In 2012, Soul released Control System, the album that would serve as his introduction to most rap fans around the country. Though Lamar and Q had signed joint agreements with Interscope, Soul’s record was issued by TDE alone. “I wasn’t so much worried about the numbers,” he says today of being the odd man out. “I just wanted in.” But he wrote and rapped as if he resented this underestimation. (From 2011’s Longterm Mentality : “Labels calling for everybody except for me/Like I ain’t got the recipe, like this ain’t my destiny.”)

Much of Control System is venomous. Soul’s punchline-first style exists on a razor’s edge; his diction is so clear and pacing so languid that he ends up working to oversell underwhelming lines or sinking deep into dorm-room philosophy (“Just imagine if Einstein got high and sipped juice”). But he is a magnetic vocalist, and the eventual effect of those conspiratorial asides is to earn Soul a place in a well-established rap lineage. He’s not exactly Ras Kass, who grew up in Carson, but the two could be cousins. Control System ends with what was -— at least until this year — the best song in Soul’s catalog. “The Book of Soul” chronicles his relationship with Alori Joh and his grief over her death by suicide just months before the album’s release. The song is harrowing but never sentimental; Soul makes the shrewd decision to pair his raps with Tommy Black’s bright, jazzy Bobby -McFerrin flip. He also, finally — at the tail end of a 72-minute album — uses the conspiracy bars to wrong-foot the listener. “I guess the Mayans wasn’t lying,” he raps. “2012, my world ended.”

These Days… , which came out in 2014, is indebted to the fuzzy molly rap that dominated rap radio in the early 2010s (and, at times, to the DJ Mustard beats that were sweeping L.A. around the time of its release); it frequently feels like a body high that lingers long past its welcome. Though Ab-Soul interpolates Chief Keef’s “Love Sosa” and Nas’ “The Cross” on consecutive songs, little of the natural tension one would expect to flow from Soul’s omnivore streak makes it onto the record. But much of These Days… was finished in the home studio of a man who would become one of Soul’s close friends: Mac Miller. The Pittsburgh native, whose Studio City home too briefly became a hub for L.A.’s most interesting rappers, had reached out to Soul on Twitter, telling him he was a fan. The pair clicked immediately. “He was a genius,” Soul says. He played a lot of instruments on his own; he really had a sound he was crafting. That was my brother, man. He extended his home to a lot of us. He did it out of love, and that’s something I can relate to.”

Soul had always rapped about drugs, but in the mid-2010s, their place in his songs became worrisome — stark revelations on pieces meant to unnerve the audience did so all too easily, and some records conceived as party fodder ended up having the same effect. (“The drank made me slow,” he raps on “Gang’Nem,” an early single from Herbert, “but my mind was on Mach 10.”) “D.R.U.G.S.,” from 2016’s glitchy, sullen Do What Thou Wilt., is sincerely upsetting; you imagine close friends, after being emailed the demo, reaching out to be sure he was O.K. It sounds as if some did.

At some point in 2018, Ab-Soul began working, slowly, on the songs that would eventually become Herbert . Though he willfully shut out all contemporary rap — “I didn’t want any flows, no beat selection” from anyone else to encroach on his process, he says — he invited more feedback from his inner circle than ever before. “I dropped the arrogance for this album,” he explains. “I didn’t argue [when someone was unimpressed by a demo]. As soon as someone was like, ‘Ehh,’ I pressed next — I dropped the, ‘Ah, man, you didn’t hear what I said?’” This does not immediately strike one as a good idea. Creating a comeback record — to which you’ve given your name as a title — by committee after a long and fraught hiatus seems destined to make it an album of compromises and dull consensus. And Soul admits that this change made it harder to get back into a rhythm than he expected. “I wanted to challenge myself to just craft freely — I didn’t want to go in with a theme or a concept. It was difficult.” So he courted those notes from friends and collaborators; when producers asked him what sorts of beats he was looking for, he asked what they imagined him rapping over.

But finishing, Herbert was interrupted by something far graver than lukewarm feedback to some skeletons. While he is understandably reticent to talk about it in detail, Soul confirms what is implied by the video for “Do Better” — that he attempted suicide. He does not say explicitly when this attempt occurred but nods when I cite a lyric about 2021 being the worst year of his life. “Most of what you’ve heard, I wrote before … it,” he says, his voice trailing off after he settles on that last word. And so, the limp. “I just wanna make it clear: You see me smiling, but it’s not funny. I think that’s just my way of healing from it.”

Trump Launches Another Attack on Judge's Daughter, This Time with Photos

The far right is crawling with eclipse conspiracy theories, ted cruz is getting nervous he’s going to lose his senate seat, trump lies that it ‘came out’ he won wisconsin during gaffe-filled rally, 'snl' cold open: indicted trump hawks bible complete with miranda rights.

In the parking lot, Ab-Soul moves on to other topics before circling back to his gratitude for the support system that has seen him through his recovery; he gives the kind of platitudes that everyone understands are insufficient, then smiles at their insufficiency. He returns to the notion that putting Herbert into the world could benefit people who are struggling. “We’re all going through things, all of us,” he says as we walk from the picnic table back to a different idling truck. “Me sharing my testimony — if it doesn’t help, it might let you know you’re not the only one going through it. That’s what ultimately gives me the courage to put it out there.”

Will We Ever Get That Black Hippy Album? We Asked Jay Rock

black hippy tour

Getty Images

Kendrick Lamar , Jay Rock , ScHoolboy Q and Ab-Soul are Black Hippy. Their collaborations have garnered serious love from fans as well as critical acclaim, but we still haven't received a full-fledged group album. Why? Well, we asked Jay Rock.

"Everybody's just working," Rock told MTV News. "Everybody is focused on their individual thing. When we do come together to make records, it's easy because we've had that chemistry since day one. We all shared the same studio for years so that sh-t is automatic."

The group came together for "Vice City," the latest single off Rock's 90059 . It's an early fan favorite and Rock thinks he knows why it's been so well received.

"Everybody was like, 'Damn, this song is so dope,' because we ain't had fun like that in a long time," he explained. "Everybody is busy working. ScHoolboy Q's on the road, Soul's on the road, Dot's on the road. But when we do get time to do something, we do it and we do it right."

The song -- a call back to tracks like "Say Wassup" and "Black Lip Bastard (Remix)" -- also makes us wonder if the group will ever clear the schedule to make the joint project that TDE fans are waiting for. We asked Rock if he ever sees that happening.

"Of course," he said. "I've heard talks that all of us are supposed to do a tour together. So, most likely we're gonna have a studio on the bus, so you never know."

Back in 2013, Ab-Soul called a Black Hippy LP Detox 2 , a nod to a highly anticipated Dr. Dre album that the world will probably never get.

Last year, Kendrick told us we might be seeing something in the future . Perhaps he was referring to "Vice City?" Now, with Jay Rock's admission that a Black Hippy tour might be coming, it looks like huge progress is being made. Still, time will tell if the world will ever really get that project.

Top Dawg Teases Black Hippy Reunion In 2023: "They Owe Y'all An Album"

Though Kendrick Lamar parted ways with TDE, Top Dawg says that a Black Hippy album is overdue.

2013 SXSW Music, Film + Interactive Festival - Day 6

Despite Kendrick Lamar ’s departure from Top Dawg Entertainment , the label’s roster continues to hold significant weight. However, the hopes for a Black Hippy album died when Kendrick left the label. Still, it seems like there’s a bit of hope left, at least, that’s what Top Dawg suggested on Twitter. During a Q&A, he said that a Black Hippy project could come at some point this year. “I think they we will….. they owe y’all an album or Ep,” he tweeted.

The original Top Dawg Entertainment roster, Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q , Ab-Soul and Jay Rock , emerged in 2008 as the label began to form. In the following years, they’d deliver posse cuts , jump on each other’s record, and continue to tease an album from the supergroup, though those plans were ultimately sidelined when Kendrick and ScHoolboy Q began reaching commercial success. Q, specifically, made it clear that tthe possibilities were “slim.” Still, they linked up on records like Jay Rock’s “Vice City” remix and ScHoolboy Q’s “THat Part,” which further fanned the flames among their dedicated fanbase.

Black Hippy & TDE Plans

Along with the possibility of a Black Hippy reunion, Top Dawg confirmed that the majority of the label would drop this year, including ScHoolboy Q and Jay Rock. After a fan asked how many TDE projects we’d see this year, Top Dawg replied, “Reason , rayvaughn , doechii , Q , jay rock , zac and a compilation,” he wrote. “if everybody do their part … when they turn them in I will release em ..” Hopefully, we won’t be waiting too long for any of those projects, especially Jay Rock, who hasn’t released a project since 2018’s Redemption .

Though Ab-Soul was missing from the list of TDE projects, Top Dawg said that the Carson-born artist has even more music in the cut that he’s preparing to unleash. “Deluxe and hopefully a new album in December,” he wrote before confirming that an Ab-Soul tour is also on the horizon. We’ll keep you posted on any further updates surrounding the potential Black Hippy reunion and upcoming releases from Top Dawg Entertainment. Who are you looking forward to dropping this year?

Ab-Soul, aka Herbert Anthony Stevens IV, is an American hip hop artist born in Carson, California, America 1987. Personally, I think he should have kept his real name as his rapper name too...

Ab-Soul's rapping career began back in 2002. It took him a couple of years to find his feet in the rap industry. He drifted through the hip hop filled air for many years, becoming closely associated with Kendrick Lemar and then forming super-group 'Black Hippy.' This was a west-coast rap star packed group with high class performers Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock. Ab-Soul wasn't as profound as these class acts, his voice hadn't been heard yet, but this super group would be the start of Ab-Soul's evolution as a prestigious California rapper. With years of Black Hippy in his locker room, 2011 was the year Ab-Soul produced his long-awaited debut record 'Longterm Mentality.' A solo project he could call his own, exactly what Ab-Soul needed. Of course his home boys from Black Hippy came in hand on tracks like 'Hell Yeah' and 'Moscato.' His music is a clash of Little Wayne and the sick, twisted lyrics of Eminem. The demon shaped silhouette of Marshal Mathers.

He is also an exceptional live performer. Back in 2012 friend and P.I.C on the mic Schoolboy Q announced the 'Groovy Tour' which was a month long tour and made sure Ab-Soul accompanied him on this groovy rap tour.

However 2012 was a topsy turvey year for our Abs. Ab was delivered the news that his long-term girlfriend died and this led Ab into a black hole of sadness. However like all talented souls, Ab turned this dark heart into a masterclass piece of work, and producing his best album 'Control System,' dedicating the album to his girlfriend.

Now three albums in and his latest record 'These Days' released this year is sending him on an acclaimed US tour. His lyrics are excelling and it's clear to see now at 27, Ab-Soul has matured into this lyrical beast, being tamed by the masses that turn up to see him live. 'Dub Sac' is an example of Ab's growth in lyrical wizardry, and is the stepping stone for future recordings.

Live reviews

Say farewell to your former self, because life will never be the same after an Ab-Soul show. This is a guy with one hand on the hip-hop throne, and the other inside your brain. Known worldwide for his introspective lyricism, Ab-Soul’s incredible live presence stretches far beyond his trademark big hair, baseball cap and shades.

When Ab-Soul takes to the stage, pandemonium ensues. Beers are thrown, hands reach for the sky, and basslines shatter everything in a three-mile radius - but, above all this, what’s most palpable is the relentless and unbreakable connection Herbert has with his audience. For that short moment, there’s a real and genuine feeling of invincibility. Unsurprisingly, Ab-Soul’s trajectory reached it’s most recent peak with ’Black Hippy’, a supergroup formed with Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Jay Rock.

An explosive performance at New York festival ‘Downtown’ in 2013 belongs in the hip-hop hall of fame.Much like his peers at the top of the rap hierarchy, Ab-Soul’s background speaks volumes about his music. Struck down with a rare virus at age ten, Herbert (as he was known then) would free-style online, in text. Perhaps it’s the closed, private and introspective nature of his rap origins that bred the raw talent we see today.

Ab -Soul put on a GREAT show. All of the songs he performed were from These Days... and Contol Sytem so dont expect much from the Long Term series. The openers were really great as well. They were an Atlanta duo named EarthGang and Bas. If you have tickets be prepared for a VERY enrgetic show!

It was great to see Ab-Soul. First professional hip hop performance and I'm glad he delivered well. Had Little Simz as a great opening act. T1 did his thing on the turntables and the other DJ did as well. Just an over all great show for a fan like me.

THE SHOW WAS LIT!!!!!

Not enough energy, but SOULO & LIL SIMZ SHOWED UP. Definitely a great time, enjoyed meeting an inspiration of mine. The crowd went nuts for Terrorist Threat, YMF, and all the Longterm II content.

Souloho was worth the trip. Definitely seeing him again when he comes to town and the dydes who opened the show did a good job keeping the crowd hyped until solo came out

With Rock The Bells 2013 around the corner, Guerrilla Union is gearing up for the annual hip-hop festival by serving up bites from the show’s performers, beginning with Kendrick Lamar . In their exclusive one-on-one with the Compton rapper, whose fiery verse on Big Sean’s “Control” went rabid on the Internets last week , discusses the origin of his crew, Black Hippy .

“Numbers, that’s more strength, that’s how I look at it and when an audience can identify an artist, that’s cool, that’s big,” he says, “but when they can identify a crew, they know it’s something bigger than just the movement. It’s a lifestyle that they bringing as far music.

The good kid, formerly known as K.Dot, is known for rolling with a tight-knit crew comprised of Top Dawg’s finest Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, Kendrick and Schoolboy Q. The “Bitch, Don’t Kill My Vibe” rapper reveals that the initial plan was to introduce each member one-by-one.

“We had a plan with this shit, we said we was gon’ get each individual off first,” he explains. “Let the world identify with these artists and understand them, and then bring them together as a collective. We feel when a group comes together from the jump, it’s always a stigma where they eventually break up and that’s because later on down the line, they eventually have their creative differences so what we did was start off with our own creative space.”

He adds, “When we say Black Happy, it’s not just music, it’s actually a group of individuals saying ‘Fuck the regular’ and doing what they want to do in the world for themselves and not getting caught up in the world of politics.” Watch the full clip below.

In the midst of what appears to be a huge year for Top Dawg Entertainment, their leader alluded to an even more exciting possibility on the horizon.

Early Monday morning (March 27), Anthony “Top Dawg” Tiffith, TDE’s founder and CEO, took to Twitter to chat with some fans. Answering questions from multiple users, he replied to a tweet asking about the potential for a Black Hippy reunion. “Will we ever get a new black hippy remix?” asked the fan.

Tiffith gave a reassuring reply, asserting that the group could reconvene sometime soon and that a project could culminate. “I think they we will….. they owe y’all an album or Ep ..,” Tiffith replied.

Fans of TDE have been yearning for a new Black Hippy release for years. Black Hippy was a group of artists signed to TDE that includes Kendrick Lamar, ScHoolboy Q, Jay Rock, and Ab-Soul. Together, they released a handful of songs in the early-to-mid-2010s, such as “Rolling Stone” (2011), a remix of Ab-Soul’s 2012 song “Black Lip Bastard,” “Vice City” from Jay Rock’s 2015 album 90059 , a remix of ScHoolboy Q’s 2016 hit “THat Part,” and a remix of Rick Ross, Future, and Rocko’s 2013 hit “U.O.E.N.O.”

With his 2022 album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers , which was his last release as a member of TDE, Kendrick Lamar seemingly ended all hope of a Black Hippy collaboration in the future. However, this news from Tiffith himself bodes well for fans who are still praying for a miracle.

Along with the Black Hippy response, Tiffith also confirmed a European tour for TDE singer SZA on the way, as well as albums from ScHoolboy Q, Doechii, and more in 2023. It’s safe to say that TDE is doing just fine without Lamar or Black Hippy, but it wouldn’t hurt to see Kung Fu Kenny reunite with his old pals one last time. Check out some of Tiffith’s Q&A tweets below.

What happened to Black Hippy? HipHopMadness breaks it down

black hippy tour

Pro and the HipHopMadness team return with a new video looking at “what happened to Black Hippy?” Black Hippy is a South Los Angeles supergroup featuring rappers Kendrick Lamar , ScHoolboy Q , Jay Rock , and Ab-Soul . Fans of the group have been waiting for an official album almost as long as Dre fans have been waiting for Detox …

Sometimes, a group of MC’s will come through from the same camp and capture the hip-hop consumers’ imagination. Often brought about by their combined talent, the chemistry that they exhibit both in and away from the booth or the motto that they align under, these cliques give fans something to identify with that often becomes bigger than the group itself. As close to Californian all-star team as the modern industry has to offer, Black Hippy, made up of Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul is a crew that certainly lives up to that proud tradition. But in other ways, this group, made up of Top Dawg Entertainment’s leading artists, are only together in a spiritual sense.

Black Hippy – “U.O.E.N.O.” Freestyle [LISTEN/DOWNLOAD]

Share the post, share this link via, or copy link.

Black Hippy dropped a quick video to promote the U.S. leg of the  “good kid, m.A.A.d city” summer tour late last night (May 22). Around 1:18 into the visual, there was a surprise in the form of a freestyle from the TDE collective. The beat of choice was Rocko’s “U.O.E.N.O.,” which Kendrick Lamar was rumored to have rapped on weeks ago.

“I f**ked up the rap game, and you ain’t even know it/ I just f**ked what’s her name, and you ain’t even know it,” spits K. Dot . That opens the tone for ScHoolboy Q , Ab-Soul , and Jay Rock to lay a few potent bars on Childish Major’s smooth track.

The “good kid, m.A.A.d city” tour includes 23 headlining shows, 22 international festivals, and 15 U.S. festivals. Among them are The Govenors Ball, Bonnaroo, Wireless Festival, Lollapalooza, and inaugural BET Experience.

See the vlog and the CDQ for Black Hippy’s “U.O.E.N.O.” remix below. The schedule for a few upcoming shows on the following page.

Beyond Woodstock: 10 Chill Hippie Towns That Should Be On Your Bucket List

Get the tie-dyes out of the closet and add these laid-back hippie towns in the US as must-visit destinations to the bucket list.

Besides partying and psychedelic fashion, the good ol' 60s brought a free way of thinking about life, spawning a community that still stands to this day. Even now, many people are trying to connect back with nature and live free from the ties of modern governments. Their solution to achieve this has been settling down into their own towns, making places where hippie culture can thrive without anyone telling them otherwise and the flower power can continue to bloom. These chill hippie towns in the US are usually hidden among mountains and lakes, but once found, they're absolutely delightful destinations to escape from the hassle of city life and learn a bit better why love is much better than war.

10 Asheville, North Carolina

Starting out as an outpost within the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains region back in 1797, Asheville is one of the best hippie towns US states have to offer and is now a friendly city where all kinds of artistic outputs have been able to develop as an essential part of the community. Behind the artsy and progressive side, Asheville also has a rich and deep history that can be lived along its streets or by visiting one of the many historic sites that still remain open for tourists to explore.

During the 19th century, Asheville got a huge boost to its trade and growth thanks to getting a direct route from Tennessee. Today, the most common attractions revolt around catching good vibes with the locals at one of the many recreational gathering spots and bars to enjoy the creative culture of this wonderful hippie town and its people. In fact, many of the town's most creative folks can often be seen in Asheville's excellent art galleries .

  • What to do in Asheville: Hike through Blue Ridge National Heritage Area, Explore the city's many museums and galleries, Attend theater functions and live music events
  • Famous landmarks: Basilica of St. Lawrence, Biltmore, Carl Sandburg home, Grandfather Mountain

9 Fairhope, Alabama

Surrounded by a beautiful beachfront and calm natural parks, the city of Fairhope is a hidden gem that serves as a wonderfully laid-back destination to the already exciting state of Alabama (which offers plenty of awesome things to do) . Visitors can take a glimpse at the city's past in the Fairhope Museum of History , where a great collection of both Native American history and well-preserved artifacts are on display for anyone to learn more about the area's past.

To please the more artsy individuals, Fairhope hosts many annual events, such as music and film festivals, that showcase talent from all over the country in days packed full of original features. To keep with natural behaviors, the nearby farms do a great job at sourcing produce for many of the city's restaurants, and the Fairhope Brewing Company crafts excellent quality beer to keep the bars and taverns able to provide a jolly good time.

  • What to do in Fairhope: Visit the beachfront for a day in the sun, Browse through the local art galleries, Get a hole-in-one at Rock Creek Golf Course
  • Famous landmarks: Fairhope Farm, Fairhope Municipal Pier, Tolstoy Park, Oak Hollow Farm

8 Boulder, Colorado

Filled with outstanding outdoor recreational activities to do and surrounded by beautiful mountainous landscapes, Boulder has been regarded as one of the best hippie towns in the US to visit due to the fact that there's always something fun to pass the time and wonderful trails for hikers to get the perfect views.

Boulder's motto, "Hip since 1859", truly encapsulates the city's relaxed demeanor, but it also comes with a price for those who call it home since it often gets labeled as one of the more costly places to live in Colorado , having a cost of living 42% over the national average. Despite this, just a quick trip to this wonderfully hip place can be a great way to decompress from the stress of everyday life.

  • What to do in Boulder: Hike through the beautiful state parks, Browse through the local specialty shops, Visit the unique Dushanbe Tea house
  • Famous landmarks: Pearl Street, Boulder Theater, The Flatirons, Museum of Boulder

Tourists can use the ultimate travel guide to Boulder when planning a trip to ensure they tick off the town's top attractions and unmissable activities.

7 New Hope, Pennsylvania

Famous for its peculiar shops filled with knick-knacks and all sorts of crafted memorabilia, New Hope gives a much-needed fresh take to the historical state of Pennsylvania. The only real downside of this cozy little hippie town is that, because it's so great, it can get packed fast, making parking during the weekends a nightmare and traversing through Main Street difficult, so keep that in mind when planning an itinerary.

  • What to do in New Hope: Get the chills by taking one of New Hope's ghost tours, Stroll through Main Street and browse the collection of unique shops, Attend the New Hope Arts Festival (Only in September)
  • Famous landmarks: Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve, New Hope Railroad, Buck's County Children Museum,

6 Lambertville, New Jersey

Conveniently placed right next to New Hope, crossing the state line through the bridge that divides Pennsylvania from New Jersey, Lambertville shares part of the same charm of its neighbor town's charm by also having a lot of antique shops packed in the same place. Thanks to being surrounded by nature, Lambertville makes for a wonderful spring getaway for families and couples alike, all while providing a thriving cultural scene with musical and visual entertainment after each corner. Given its unique charm, it's no wonder Lambertville earned its place among the top hippie towns in the US.

  • What to do in Lambertville: Browse the interesting antique shops, Explore local art in the many galleries, Tour the Victorian homes
  • Famous landmarks: Delaware River, Holcombe-Jimison Farmstead Museum, Highlands Art Gallery, Music Mountain Theater

5 Eureka Springs, Arkansas

It's not a mystery why visiting a Victorian-era hippie town hidden between the Ozarks is a great idea. Eureka Springs in the Ozarks is worthy of a visit ; this is a small, charming town that surrounds itself with well-preserved architecture and beautiful natural landscapes that can give visitors the perfect picture of the sunset over the Ozark Mountains . The people also do their part in adding a wonderful feeling to the town, with passionate performances and colorful displays throughout the week to keep everyone entertained.

  • What to do in Eureka Springs: Explore the Onyx Cave Park, Attend a function at The Great Passion Play, Tour along the Victorian-era buildings
  • Famous landmarks: Mineral Springs, Crescent Hotel (hosts ghost tours), Thorncrown Chapel, Beaver Lake

4 Joshua Tree, California

Most people might not think about the desert as an artsy, natural, and friendly destination, but the hippie community in the town of Joshua Tree has built a wonderful settlement for passersby to rest and entertain themselves in the middle of the High Desert in San Bernardino County.

Besides offering unique lodging options, never-ending musical performances, and psychedelic art galleries, the main attraction of the area is Joshua Tree National Park, which serves as a magical landscape filled with trees and easy walking trails surrounded by arid scenery.

  • What to do in Joshua Tree: Learn about the space visitors at the Integration, Marvel at the wonderfully unique sculptures around town, Get a rush at one of the many climbing routes
  • Famous landmarks: Joshua Tree National Park, Giant Rock, Crochet Museum

If hiking is on the agenda and there are beginners in the group, be sure to check out the easiest hikes in Joshua Tree National Park .

3 Missoula, Montana

Comfortably nested in western Montana, Missoula offers plenty of things to do and see . It is a gorgeous mountain city that has gained the nickname of the "Garden City", thanks to its plentiful and dense treeline provided by the banks of the Clark Ford River . But Missoula's greatness doesn't come only from the scenic views, as the city has a keen focus on culture and arts, showcasing the region's past in the museums, displaying contemporary and Native American pieces at the galleries, and giving constant musical shows for the lovers of finer arts.

  • What to do in Missoula: Go round and round at the Missoula Carousel, Grab a pint straight from the local breweries, Trail through one of the many beautiful paths
  • Famous landmarks: Albert Point, Alberton Orchards, Glacial Lake

2 Pā'ia, Hawaii

Making a U-turn from the desert and mountainous settings, Pā'ia is a tiny town inside Maui County that makes the most out of the beautiful Hawaiian coastline and puts the "hip" back into hippie. Due to also being a beach town, Pā'ia has unparalleled calm and groovy vibes that can be felt through its friendly people and welcoming buildings. Not only can people head toward the beach to catch some waves, but there are also highly spiritual activities to get visitors to connect with nature and learn how to communicate with this beautiful land. The Black Keys will take their upcoming album  Ohio Players across North America on the  International Players Tour this fall. The trek from former garage rock revivalists-turned Top 40 mainstays Dan Auerbach and  Patrick Carney will support the band’s album out on Friday (the same day tickets go on sale).

The 31-date North American tour will kick off on September 17th in Tulsa, OK. For the next two months, The Black Keys will traverse the continent playing shows in Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Nashville, Philadelphia, New York City, Chicago, and more. The Akron-bred duo will play two shows in their home state of Ohio—October 12th in Cleveland and October 24th in Columbus—and plenty of other cities before the tour wraps on November 12th in Detroit. The Head And The Heart will provide opening support on most dates.

Tickets for The Black Keys’  International Players Tour will go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 5th at 10 a.m. local time. American Express cardmembers will have first access to tickets via a pre-sale set to run from Tuesday, April 2nd at 10 a.m. local time through Thursday, April 4th at 10 p.m. local time. Additional pre-sales will run throughout the week. Visit Live Nation and The Black Keys ‘ websites for additional information. See below for a detailed list of tour dates.

Ohio Players marks The Black Keys’ 12th album overall and first since Dropout Boogie in 2022. The 14-track LP hears the duo collaborate with a varied roster of contemporaries including Beck ,  Noel Gallagher ,  Greg Kurstin ,  Juicy J , and more.

“We had this epiphany: ‘We can call our friends to help us make music.’ It’s funny because we both write songs with other people—Dan all the time [as a solo artist and producer], me when I’m producing a record. That’s what we do,” drummer Patrick Carney said of the album. “What we wanted to accomplish with this record was make something that was fun. And something that most bands 20 years into their career don’t make, which is an approachable, fun record that is also cool.”

The Black Keys are launching their 2024 autumn tour in Oklahoma: What you need to know

The Black Keys are going to launch their newly announced 2024 North American headline tour in Oklahoma.

The six-time Grammy winners will kick off their fall "International Players Tour" Sept. 17 at the BOK Center in Tulsa. Produced by Live Nation, the coast-to-coast tour will go on to New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, with two dates in the band’s home state of Ohio.

The Head and The Heart will join the tour as direct support for select shows, including the Tulsa kick-off concert.

Fall tour to support The Black Keys' new album 'Ohio Players'

The Black Keys ' 31-city autumn tour will support their 12th studio album, "Ohio Players," due out Friday, April 5 via Nonesuch Records.

The follow-up to The Black Keys' 2022 album "Dropout Boogie," "Ohio Players" features collaborations with several of the rockers' friends and colleagues, including Beck, Noel Gallagher, Dan the Automator, Greg Kurstin, Juicy J and Lil Noid.

The album's lead single “Beautiful People (Stay High)" recently reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart and AAA Airplay charts. Additional singles from the new album include “This Is Nowhere” and “I Forgot to Be Your Lover.”

The tour announcement follows two celebrated performances by The Black Keys at South by Southwest earlier this month in Austin, Texas, where they also debuted their new documentary, "This is a Film About The Black Keys," to rave reviews.

Formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001, The Black Keys are singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. After starting out playing small clubs, the band has gone on to sell out arena tours and has released 11 previous studio albums: their debut "The Big Come Up" (2002), followed by "Thickfreakness" (2003) and "Rubber Factory" (2004), along with their Nonesuch Records releases "Magic Potion" (2006), "Attack & Release" (2008), "Brothers" (2010), "El Camino" (2011), "Turn Blue" (2014), “Let’s Rock” (2019), "Delta Kream" (2021) and "Dropout Boogie" (2022).

When are tickets to The Black Keys' Oklahoma arena show going on sale?

Ahead of the North American leg of the tour, The Black Keys will trek to Europe to debut their new live show. Tickets for the UK and Europe shows are on-sale now.

Tickets to the band's North American tour kick-off show in Tulsa go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday, April 5 and will be available online at www.bokcenter.com .

American Express Card Members can purchase tickets before the general public beginning at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 2 through 10 p.m. Thursday, April 4.

Tulsa ticket prices range from $59.75 to $199.75.
