Pierce The Veil, a fellow rock band native to San Diego, will join the North American leg as a special guest.

The tour announcement ties a bow on an exciting year for the “All The Small Things” musicians, who announced in October last year that DeLonge would be reinstated as part of the band. The singer/guitarist had previously left the group twice, once in 2005 and again in 2014. Their new album One More Time… marked the first time Blink’s classic lineup had been in the studio together in a decade and features 17 Barker-produced tracks, including Alternative Airplay No. 1 s “Edging” and “One More Time.”

Blink-182 is an American pop punk rock band from San Diego, California in 1992. The group has consisted of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, Travis Barker and Scott Raynor. The group has sold over 35 million albums worldwide.

Blink-182 came to prominence in the early 90s punk scene in California where their energetic shows made them a hit with crowds. The group was signed to independent label Cargo Records where they released their debut album “Cheshire Cat”. While the album was not commercially successful, it picked up a lot of buzz and is considered an iconic pop punk album of the time.

The buzz generated by this first album caused a bidding war between multiple mainstream labels and the band eventually signed with MCA. Drummer Scott Raynor’s disagreement with this decision contributed to his drifting from the band and he was eventually fired in 1998 and replaced by Travis Barker.

With the new record label and new line up settled, Blink-182 released “Enema of the State” in 1999 and quickly rose to fame with singles “Adam’s Song”, “All the Small Things” and “What’s My Age Again?” all receiving regular airtime on MTV. The album was the band’s most successful release to date and went to number 9 on the US Billboard chart.

The stress of constant touring and promotion as well as differences about where the band should go with their next album boiled to a head and caused the band to go on an indefinite hiatus in 2005. After Travis Barker was involved in a serious plane crash, the group reunited in 2008 and went on to start work on their sixth studio album, “Neighborhoods”, which was released in 2011 and charted at number 2 in the US.

Blink-182 has cited The Ramones, The Cure and The Vandals, amongst others, as influences for their music, but the reality is that Blink-182 are massive influencers and inspirations for musicians all around the world. The band inspired the second wave of pop punk music in the new millennium and also single-handedly bought this music into the mainstream. For this reason, their music will certainly live on for generations.

Live reviews

Well let me start off by saying that this was my first rock concert that I have ever been too. It was amazing, the sound was amazing and they were amazing. I've always liked Blink-182 because they were kind of more on the "nice" side of rock. Not like heavy metal. When they performed in Phoenix, the opening acts were A Day To Remember and All Time low. I am not sure if that is the same for everyone. If you don't like heavy metal than I would suggest skipping the All Time Low act. Also, don't be in a rush to go to there concert because I got there at 6:00, the doors opened at 7:30. They started playing around 9:30. So its okay if you were a little late.

Sexual jokes;

They do make jokes about sex... A lot of jokes about sex and some of them are worse than others. But the only people who made jokes were the opening acts.

There is DEFINITELY a lot of cursing. But what do you expect? It's a Blink-182 concert.

When I went there we sat pretty close to the stage. The pit is a little crazy but nothing to bad. There will be a lot of drugs, smoking, and alcohol there. I sat behind a guy that was totally drunk and there are people smoking EVERYWHERE.

If your child is 9 or younger, Please leave them home, it's just not safe. And if it means that you can't go to the concert, than just stay home. It's better to be safe than sorry.

If your child is 10-14, I think they should go with a parent/guardian.

If your child is 15-16 I would say, make sure they have some adult supervision available to them if they ever got in an emergency.

If your child is 17+, I think they will be fine depending on how mature they are.

It's not worth it. You go to a five minuet sound check and for the meet and greet, you don't even do anything. It's just not worth spending your money.

Even though the VIP is a rip off, I would still, highly suggest you go to there concert, it was phenomenal.

WAIT FOR IT !!!........... LIL WAYNE cancelled just hours before the show (rolling my eyes) so needless to say happy we showed up at 9pm because instead of lil wayne the fans were entertained by music mashups of rock and rap (crappy mix ups by the way) and music by the backstreet boys or n sync not sure which boy band it was but i was super annoyed when i heard the near sold out crowd singing along of "i want it that way" really crappy song but all these idiots were singing along like it was 6th grade but on to the positive blink 182 put on a great set for a whole 60 minutes yep 1 hour started at 9:30 was done by 10:30 great set pyro, smoke, cool video stage set up NO TOM DELONGE some new guy not his fault he played great but it wasnt teb same he didnt really sound like TOM so it was like blink 182 karaoke for some of the songs and the short set time I mean shit lil wayne doesnt show these guys could have saved the day and played longer but in typical rock star fashion they charged full price for tickets delivered half of a show and a short set disapointed much ? YEAH I WAS hate to say it but I mean it wasnt a 20 dollar ticket here tickets were not cheap but the amount of entertainment vs the amount paid for the ticket was not EQUAL felt pretty ripped off as a whole save your money this go round NOT WORTH THE CASH plus we drove 4 hours to go to this show so a few hundred dollars later we got and hour of a headliner entertainment hell KISS are 70 years old and played for 2 and a half hours the tickets were pricey but hell they were showmen and lots of fire, pyro, smoke, fireworks, ect stunts elevating risers ect so you tell me if its worth it to go see 40 year old entitled punks vs 70 year old vets who are doing a cash grab no doubt but are still delivering an experirience

Blink 182 has been my favorite band as a kid back in ‘96 when I first heard of them and will always be. I finally got to see them live for the first tine ever in 2016, 20 years later because they came close to my hometown in Greenville, SC. Then about 3 months later to my actual hometown in Charleston, SC. I was close to the middle up front and had the time of my life. I thank the whole band for making one person’s dream come true just to see you live. I’ve always wanted to meet Mark and Travis!! I was so like it’s cool when Mark tried to throw me a pick but it landed short and he apologized and he Ent on with the show. But my heart filled up with joy when, in my opinion, the greatest drummer in the whole universe, Travis Barker!!!!, acknowledged me when I gave him a thumbs up. Wish I could meet and talk to then!! A dream for a lifetime. Blink 182 you will always be number 1 to me and hold a special place in my heart as you do to millions of fans!! Love you all and can’t wait for the bext album!! Including Mark’s new band aka The Side Piece. Mark if you ever read this’ please don’t take offense to the comment. Blink 4 Life!! Peace...

Think early 2000s fashion, baggy jeans, chains, and terrible hair, ‘say it ain’t so, I will not go, turn the lights off, carry me home’. This song takes me right back to my young teenage self, jumping round my bedroom with a hairbrush as a microphone. Back in 2012 when I got asked if I would like to go and see Blink-182 live, I thought, sure!

Although my enthusiasm for them had somewhat dwindled over the last decade, it’s always fun to have a bit of a throwback and that’s exactly what I was hoping for when I went to their London O2 Arena concert. Even from the upper tier of the arena, the sound quality was amazing and as they game out on stage they began playing ‘Feeling This’ over the tumultuous sound of a cheering arena crowd.

The atmosphere was fuelled by the incredible set of the album cover and laser lights dancing across the stage and out towards the audience. As the show progressed, they began singing more and more classic, culminating in ‘All the Small Things’, which is what everyone was desperate to hear.

They really did put on a fantastic show, great vocals, performance, and energy, I’m so glad I went.

There's not much to say about a Blink-182 live show apart from the fact it must be seen to be believed. Having been pioneers of the pop/punk revival of the 90's, Blink have a huge string of cult hits and a fan base of all ages who continue to fill out their shows with no sign of slowing down.

The cheers are raised as the band confidently take to stage, running around, laughing, joking from the offset as if they were about to start a garage jam session rather than entertain thousands. This air of carelessness carries on as Blink are not a band who take themselves seriously during performance, during mass singalongs to 'What's My Age Again' they are often jovially moving around stage and baiting the crowds below.

The act does get a little relentless as it can feel as if the band hasn't really grown up since its formation. Although there are moments of sincerity in the form of 'I Miss You' and a well performed cover of 'Hybrid Moments' by Misfits. 'All The Small Things' obviously receives the best reaction, and the performance of this cult anthem is incredibly fun.

Took my 2 songs (20 & 16). Wanted to see both Frank Turner - who I've seen loads - and Blink

Managed to get access to O2 Priority & use their cloakrooms & loos before going into the Arena.

Frank T & The Sleeping Souls as always nailed it. How often do you see a support act crowdsurf

Then onto Blink. Stsrted with a bang literally. Flag dropped to reveal a firey F U C K behind the band.

From then they took us through a mixture of new songs for California (Bored to Death, Kings of the Weekend, Los Angeles + others) & old classics (Feeling This, I Miss You, Reckless Abandon, All the Small Things, Dumpweed & Dammit to name a few). Check out the setlist at setlist.com

Throughout the set we have flames, smoke burst, amazing graphics, firework waterfall and of course an end of set confetti canon

Travis' drumming was amazing & night finishing with his son performing a drum solo

A great night was had by all

Show exceeded expectations and was THRILLED we didn't have to listen to Lil Wayne - bonus. Thanks to St. Louis for helping to move him on his way to the next venue. Loved hearing Enema of the State in its entirety. Wish they had included Always but the other added songs were great as well. I thought Matt sounded great and thoroughly enjoyed a couple of the songs from California and NINE. Sad no encore but had a total blast singing along and dancing. Super charged stage show and Travis' drum solo was amazing but never long enough for me! (I'm sure plenty long for him - what a work out!) Neck Deep also put on a great performance. They are a GREAT opening act for Bink. Thanks for the show - and long lasting memories.

Best day of my whole entire life. These guys can rock the hell out of you. Amazing performance, amazing song list, amazing audience and atmosphere. When you see what Travis Barker does on the drums you are standing there with your jaw dropped and cannot believe it. I was a bit aftaid that the sound was going to be exactly like on the videos with Tom singing but no! This guy sings great and Mark too. Not a single problem with the sound. I loved in particular Rock Show, Always, Small Things, First Date and Down. Every time these guys are in town - just go there without thinking. We're atually very close to going to Leipzig tonight to see them one more time right away :)

Matt Skiba was filling in for Tom but the band didn't miss a beat all. The show at their old stomping grounds, SOMA in San Diego, was an unforgettable performance. The crowd was filled with a few too many teenagers who were more concerned with snapchatting the band than listening to them, but the band's performance made the show amazing regardless. Mark has enough funny/not-funny one liners to add some humor to the show, but overall it's just an awesome band cranking out the hits, as well as some throwbacks and deeper cuts. I've been a fan of them for 15 years and the show still exceeded all my expectations. I'd relive that show over and over.

The concert was sick! Everyone in the crowd (young, old, boy, girl, hardcore punk rock, or less so) was hype and having a great time! The energy onstage was contagious, you could feel it all through the venue! The lights and pyrotechnics were perfectly timed and kept the liveliness up all night. Blink 182 played an outstanding mix of thier old and new songs. It was crazy, I felt like I was frozen in time. The songs I used to listen to as a kid still make me feel alive. Blink 182 is timeless and they seem to only get better with age. I'm really happy I didn't miss this concert, this was truly one for the books!

Travis Barker to reunite with Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus for massive Blink-182 tour

blink-182 & My Chemical Romance: The 2011 Honda Civic Tour Announcement Event

Blink-182's members Tom DeLonge, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker are reuniting for their first tour together in nearly 10 years.

On Twitter, the band announced that they were coming to their fan's hometowns when they shared a video of people getting excited about their upcoming tour.

Blink-182 also announced that they're coming out with a new song called "Edging," which is set to be released on Oct. 14.

Their new tune marks the first time in a decade that Barker, Hoppus and DeLonge have been in the studio together.

According to a press release, Blink-182 will be making stops in Latin America, North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand starting March 2023 through February 2024, and they'll be joined by other bands, such as Turnstile, Rise Against, The Story So Far and Wallows.

Fans can start purchasing tickets for the global tour on Monday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m their local time on blink182.com .

This tour is a special moment for the band as it's a homecoming for DeLonge, who parted ways with Blink-182 in 2015.

According to Rolling Stone , DeLonge said he wanted to go to “change the world for my kids and everybody else’s.” Since then, he's been performing with his other band, Angels & Airwaves, while Blink-182 replaced him with Matt Skiba, the frontman of the rock band Alkaline Trio.

In the meantime, Barker has been making music with other musicians such as Machine Gun Kelly and Avril Lavigne, and Hoppus has been writing a book about his experience with cancer.

But even though DeLonge wasn't in Blink-182 for the band's two most recent albums: 2016's "California" and 2019's "NINE," he still says that he has no hard feelings about his departure.

Travis Barker, Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppus to reunite as Blink-182 for upcoming world tour.

In fact, in 2019, he told Rolling Stone that he thinks there will "absolutely" be a time when they play together again.

“We all love each other and care about each other,” he said. “We don’t always see eye to eye. I think people see the differences in our art. I love seeing how they’ve evolved and what they’re doing. I think when people look at Angels and Airwaves and what I’m doing, they can tell the differences. And sometimes it’s hard when you’re all trying to paint the same painting. And every once in a while, I like to see what the painting will be if I do it a different way. Off to the side. I think there’s a healthy respect for everyone to be able to paint their own paintings.”

Blink-182 are getting the band back together with a new tour

Blink-182 singer/bassist Mark Hoppus (L) and singer/guitarist Tom DeLonge perform in 2009. The band confirmed the classic lineup would once again reunite.

Blink-182, San Diego's kings of pop-punk, are getting the band back together.

Tom DeLonge is rejoining bandmates Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker for the first time in seven years. The band announced via their web site and social media that they would be embarking on a world tour starting in March 2023 are are releasing a new song, "Edging," on Friday, with a new album to follow.

DeLonge has quit the band twice and now returned twice. For the last seven years, Matt Skiba of the band Alkaline Trio has taken his place.

The band formed in 1992, playing all over San Diego in YMCAs, basements and VFW halls before releasing their first record Cheshire Cat in 1995 and catching the eye of major record labels. In 1997, their album Dude Ranch saw Blink-182 receive major radio play for the song "Dammit."

The original lineup featured Scott Raynor on drums, Mark Hoppus on bass and Tom DeLonge on guitar, before Scott Raynor was fired in 1998 and replaced with Travis Barker. This cemented the lineup for the band that would then record 1999's Enema of the State, which became a gigantic commercial success, selling over 15 million records.

The band was known for their sense of humor and music videos that aired regularly on MTV. In 2001 they released Take Off Your Pants and Jacket , which went on to be their second highest-selling record. In 2003 they released a self-titled album featuring a more mature sound.

The Legacy Of 'Adam's Song,' An Anthem To Darkness, Loss — And Recovery

American Anthem

The legacy of 'adam's song,' an anthem to darkness, loss — and recovery.

Tensions within the band led to DeLonge leaving in 2005 and forming the group Angels and Airwaves, while Hoppus and Barker formed their own group +44.

In 2008, the band would reunite again after Barker was nearly killed in a plane crash that took the life of four people and critically injured Adam Goldstein, known as "DJ AM."

After Barker healed from injuries, Blink-182 toured again and released the 2011 record Neighborhoods . The band stayed together for seven more years before DeLonge parted the band again, citing creative differences.

In the intervening years, DeLonge became involved in funding investigations of UFOs .

With Skiba on guitar, the band released the albums California in 2016 and Nine in 2019.

In June 2021, Mark Hoppus confirmed that he had received a cancer diagnosis and had been undergoing treatment.

At the end of the year, Hoppus declared he was cancer-free. In an interview with People , Hoppus said the trio had spent some time together before his chemotherapy began, and they were in "a really great place right now." The bassist added: "I keep writing music, and I'm open to whatever the next phase of Blink is ... I'm hopeful for the future. I'm just damn glad to be here."

Blink-182 Can’t Stop Touring: Band Details Summer 2024 Shows

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Blink-182 will keep the big reunion party going into next year, announcing another massive North American tour for summer 2024.

The run will kick off June 20 at the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida, with dates scheduled through Aug. 15 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto. Blink-182 will primarily play arenas during the run, though there will be a few special stadium gigs in Los Angeles, New York, Boston, Toronto, and the band’s hometown of San Diego. Pierce the Veil will provide support throughout the tour, while Alexisonfire will join the bill just for the final gig in Toronto.

Tickets for all shows will go on sale Oct. 27 at 10 a.m. local time. Full info is available on Blink-182’s website .

Along with the reunion tour, Blink-182 released a new album, One More Time , last Friday, Oct. 20. The LP marks the first from Hoppus, DeLonge, and Barker since 2011’s Neighborhoods . After DeLonge left the group in 2015, he was replaced by Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba, who appeared on two albums, 2016’s California and 2019’s Nine .

In a recent interview with Zane Lowe , Hoppus and DeLonge opened up about their acrimonious 2015 splits with both admitting they weren’t sure they’d ever play together again. That changed after Hoppus was diagnosed with cancer in 2021 — a traumatic but clarifying event not unlike the 2008 plane crash that nearly killed Barker.

blink 182 tour today

Blink-182 has been performing in front of sold-out crowds ever since its founding members reunited at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival and embarked on a massive tour .

And if you missed them this year, fear not: The iconic pop-punk band is going to keep the party going well into next summer. Blink-182 announced Monday that has added 2024 concerts to its schedule that include both arena and stadium dates.

Released Oct. 20, the album has been promoted by six singles that include the title track and " Edging ," the band's first song since the return of DeLonge, who departed the band in 2015.

Produced by Live Nation, the newly added 30-city North American trek begins June 20 in Orlando, Florida and ends Aug. 15 in Toronto. Blink-182 also announced several international stops in Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Following the international continuation of their world tour in 2024, there are several avenues to consider when looking for the latest on where to buy Blink 182 tickets for their concert series in North America and beyond. The 2024 One More Time tour takes place throughout the summer as the band plays in the US for the first time since July 2023.

While Blink 182 still has 35 shows to play internationally for the end of their 2023/2024 World Tour, the rock band – consisting of Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge, and Travis Barker – will head back on the road in North America shortly after for the One More Time Tour. The summer 2024 concert series includes 30 performances across as many cities in the US, kicking off on June 20 in Orlando, Florida.

The One More Time tour will support the titular album Blink 182 released late last year. As such, the setlist is expected to include the album's singles like "Edging" and "More Than You Know." Of course, Blink 182's classics like "All the Small Things," "I Miss You," and "What's My Age Again?" are also expected to be performed on tour.

We've got you covered when looking for how to buy tickets for Blink 182's 2024 tour. Here's our One More Time Tour schedule breakdown, purchasing details, and original and resale ticket prices. You can also browse the available resale tickets on StubHub and Vivid Seats at your leisure.

All concert times are listed in local time zones.

Blink-182 Cancels Two More Of The Band’s Mexico City Shows Reportedly Due To An Ongoing Medical Illness

Flisadam Pointer

Since reuniting at Coachella 2023 , fans of Blink-182 have been itching to catch the band live. Supporters’ wish became a reality when the “ Dance With Me ” musicians announced their One More Time Tour . Unfortunately, the stops in Mexico City haven’t gone down as planned.

Yesterday (April 5), the promoter of the group’s shows in the country revealed that Blink-182’s remaining concerts in the area would not take place. “Dear fans, sadly, Blink-182 shows on April 5 and 6 at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City have been canceled due to illness,” wrote the promoter Ocesa.

The organizer did not provide specifics about the undisclosed alignment. But fans have begun to offer their prayers for the group’s bassist, Mark Hoppus. According to Billboard , Hoppus had been treated for an acute throat infection and severe bronchitis earlier in the month. In 2021, Hoppus was diagnosed with cancer and subsequently underwent chemotherapy . Of the four booked concerts (April 2 through 3 and 5 through 6), only one show was held (April 2).

On April 3, Hoppus allegedly took to the group’s Discord channel to issue a statement. “We don’t take canceling lightly. We know people booked flights and hotels, made plans, and got babysitters,” he wrote. “We had multiple lengthy discussions all morning within the band with promoters and managers. We tried moving the date and tried every possible solution, but this is the reality. We appreciate your understanding and support.”

Blink-182 Cancels Shows Due to Mark Hoppus’ “Severe Bronchitis”

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

The post Blink-182 Cancels Shows Due to Mark Hoppus’ “Severe Bronchitis” appeared first on Consequence .

Blink-182 has canceled three shows on their 2024 tour due to Mark Hoppus coming down with severe bronchitis.

Currently on the road in support of their latest album, ONE MORE TIME… , Blink-182 was scheduled to play four nights at Palacio de los Deportes in Mexico City. However, after the first performance on April 2nd, the band canceled the second show due to Hoppus’ illness, hoping they could still perform the final two.

Sadly, though, Hoppus’ condition worsened, and the other two shows were canceled as well. A message Hoppus sent via Discord after the initial cancellation said, “We don’t take canceling lightly… We tried moving the date, tried every possible solution, but this is the reality. We appreciate your understanding and support.”

As for his health, Hoppus explained that he consulted with doctors in Mexico and “back home,” and was told that he had “an acute infection in my throat and severe bronchitis.” After the diagnosis, he “got on meds immediately” to try to heal up for the weekend shows, but to no avail. Now, all ticket holders for the canceled shows will be refunded.

Read statements from the shows’ promotor and Hoppus’ Discord messages below.

Up next, Hoppus will hopefully get a chance to heal up with a pre-scheduled break in their tour. The next leg kicks off on June 20th in Florida, after which the band will play shows through the end of August. Check out the full list of their upcoming dates , and grab tickets here .

Tesla drops FSD price to $99 per month in US

Tesla has slashed the price of its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software subscription to $99 per month, down from $199 per month, as the electric vehicle maker aims to boost adoption of its advanced driver assistance system ahead of first-quarter earnings. The price cut comes a couple of weeks after Tesla launched a free one-month trial of FSD for every customer in the U.S. with a compatible Tesla. Formerly known as FSD Beta, Tesla is now referring to the software as "Supervised FSD" to make it clear that the software doesn't turn Teslas into autonomous vehicles, and human drivers still need to supervise the not-so-self-driving software.

His doctor has confirmed that in addition to the damage to his vocal cords, he fractured his larynx which requires ongoing care."

In his own statement, Tyler added, " I am heartbroken to not be out there with Aerosmith, my brothers and the incredible Black Crowes, rocking with the best fans in the world. I promise we will be back as soon as we can!"

Lost Tapes From Major Musicians Are Out There. These Guys Find Them.

For decades, recordings left at studios have languished in storage rooms and basements. Master Tape Rescue, a company of two industry vets, is coming to save them.

A blond man reaches up and handles two boxes of recordings labeled “Louie Armstrong” located on shelves where many such tan boxes with lettering are visible.

By Bob Mehr

Reporting from Los Angeles

In late 2020, Brian Kehew was working at the venerable Hollywood studio Sunset Sound when the owner asked him to help identify some tapes the Who had left behind. It was not an unusual request for Kehew, who has done tape transfers and mixes on hundreds of archival recording projects over the last 30 years, and serves as a tech and sometime backing musician for the band. He expected to find some overdubs or a safety copy of a master, nothing particularly important.

When he got his hands on the reels, he was shocked: The studio was sitting on all the original two-inch multitracks of the group’s 1975 album, “The Who by Numbers,” as well as previously unreleased songs from those sessions.

“I immediately contacted Pete Townshend, and we arranged to send the tapes back to England,” Kehew, a blond-haired Southern California native, said in a recent interview at his North Hollywood studio, which was lined with rare, vintage and obsolete tape machines. “The band had been looking for the tapes for years, but this was one place they hadn’t thought to check.”

For Kehew, a producer of Fiona Apple’s “Extraordinary Machine” and an expert on both the Beatles and Moog synthesizers, the recovery of the Who recordings underscored the fact that significant tapes “might be sitting in someone’s attic or barn or basement” and not where they belong, in a record company vault or an artist’s archive. “The obstacle to getting these tapes back in the right hands has always been the time and effort involved,” he said. “But what if there was a facile way to connect everyone that doesn’t involve a lot of hassle or red tape?”

The answer may be Master Tape Rescue , a company recently started by Kehew and his partner, Danny White, a fellow music industry veteran. The company acts as an archival matchmaking service of sorts, cataloging recordings from studios or private collections and then vetting and connecting rights holders with tape holders.

Over the past six months, as Kehew, 59, and White, 57, have canvassed the vaults of various studios and other holdings, they have discovered a wealth of fascinating material: previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix jam sessions, unknown Billie Holiday tapes, a trove of historic Chicago blues material, a large collection of professional concert recordings from artists including David Bowie, R.E.M. and Iggy Pop. “And it feels like that’s just the tip of the iceberg,” White said.

It was another historic discovery that brought White — a lanky, Indiana-born musician, studio owner and president of Sound Techniques, a recording console maker — into the project. In the late 2000s, he backed the Buddy Holly guitarist Tommy Allsup on tour. In 2009, inspired by the experience, he wrote a young adult novel, “The Last Rock and Roll Show,” about a pair of kids who discover lost Holly recordings. Life would imitate art when White was hired by the estate of a former Holly producer to assess its tape archive — and discovered more than 20 first-generation masters by the “Peggy Sue” singer.

Holly’s catalog was among the recordings reported to have been destroyed in the 2008 Universal Studios fire, which came to wide public knowledge in 2019. The find was major, showing that not everything was lost in the blaze. “It’s not all of Buddy’s masters,” White said, “but it’s a big chunk of his catalog, which is significant given the circumstances. And this was all sitting in a closet for years.”

In cases like the Who or Holly, there is real financial value in the recovered tapes. But most lost recordings, even ones from name acts, may be worth only a few hundred or thousand dollars. “Even though you have a tape, you don’t own the rights to what’s on it, so you can’t expect the moon,” Kehew said. “Labels might pay a small licensing fee use to a tape or track for a boxed set, sometimes they’ll buy it outright. Usually, they offer a finder’s fee or a storage fee — like, here’s a reward for preserving our tape all this time. It scales up and down with the artist, and how special the material is.”

But White said money isn’t the point: “We’re doing this more out of a sense of history, and hopefully help find some cool stuff that’s just been collecting dust for decades.”

NEARLY EVERY STUDIO that operated in the peak era of analog recording from the 1950s to the early 2000s has a locker, vault or room dedicated to housing tapes left behind by artists and labels.

Historically, finished album masters — held on a single quarter-inch tape reel, from which commercial copies would be manufactured — were considered the most valued asset. The multitracks — heavy, cumbersome two-inch reels of tape, containing the individual elements of the recording — would typically be collected and delivered to the label after a session. But inevitably a small percentage of tapes landed in the studio’s on-site storage, often forgotten completely by the artist and record company.

Paul Camarata, who owns Sunset Sound, watched his entire second-story space fill floor to ceiling with tapes like this, more than 1,500 at last count, from the big-band leader Harry James to the 1980s hitmakers Toto, before calling in Master Tape Rescue. “I’m always thinking we gotta get these tapes out of here,” he said. “But we’re in a strange quandary — we don’t own the tapes, and I would never just throw them away. We’ve just become an unwitting storage service.”

Over the years, record companies have “come down and scoured our archives hoping to find some gold,” he said. “But it’s kind of like leaving your car at the mechanic for 40 years and just expecting to pick it up one day.”

In 2010, Clay Blair began operating the Boulevard Recording Studio in Hollywood. It came with an illustrious history: Opened as Continental Recorders in 1966, it morphed into Producer’s Workshop in the 1970s (turning out projects by Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac and Steely Dan) and eventually became Westbeach Recorders, the pop-punk stronghold whose clients included Blink-182, Rancid and the Offspring. When Blair took over the space, he inherited a disused echo chamber that had been turned into a tape storage.

“There’s at least a couple hundred tapes in there that go all the way back to the ’60s,” said Blair, who is also working with Master Tape Rescue. “There are recordings by Liberace and Engelbert Humperdinck, a score for an Evel Knievel film, we found a Jerry Garcia tape from the ’70s, a soundtrack he did that’s never been released. Just the other day, we found the two-inch reels from Concrete Blonde’s hit ‘Joey.’ There’s all kinds of stuff hiding in these studios that nobody has any idea about.”

Still, numerous recording facilities that have been sold or closed over the years simply threw out their archives. The most famous example is Olympic Studios in London, which in 1987 took its entire tape inventory — including incredibly valuable multitrack recordings by bands like the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin — and placed them in a dumpster. Enterprising collectors salvaged as many reels as possible; some were reunited with the artists, others turned up as bootlegs.

Historically, multitrack recordings were seen as less valuable than finished master tapes. Back in the 1960s, bands would often roll back over recorded performances for fresh takes, or labels would bulk erase reels after a session and reuse the tape for other projects. “A lot of great, interesting recordings got lost that way,” said Andrew Sandoval, a reissue producer who has specialized in catalog work for ’60s groups like the Monkees and the Beach Boys.

Sandoval said that even major artists of the era, like the Kinks, have very few of their early multis. “You’re never going to hear alternate takes of classics like ‘You Really Got Me’ or ‘All of the Day,’” he said. “None of those things exist.”

During the 1970s and ’80s, multitracks were haphazardly stored, organized and prized, even by major labels. It wasn’t uncommon to walk into a place like Coast Recording Equipment Supply, a pro audio shop in Hollywood, and find used reels being sold for recording that contained multitrack masters by bands like the Doors.

It wasn’t until the CD era and the explosion of deep-dive compilations and boxed sets in the late ’80s and early ’90s that record companies started to fully realize the value of their multitracks. “When you get into the re-marketing of music and creating reissues, the first thing a label asks is: ‘Is there something new here?’” Sandoval said. “In order to find or create something new, you usually need to go back to the multitracks — that’s your biggest source of alternate takes, outtakes and unreleased material.”

Today, multitracks arguably hold even more value thanks to the rise of remix projects, the development of immersive audio formats like Dolby Atmos, and even TV, film and commercial sync opportunities, which often require use of the original recording elements.

“The ability to recast an artist’s music, to present it in a new way, usually depends on the multitracks,” said John Jackson, the longtime Sony/Legacy A&R executive. Now running his own consultancy, advising Billy Joel, Rosanne Cash and the estate of AC/DC’s Bon Scott, he noted that “if you don’t have the multitracks or have a plan for the multitracks, you’re not recognizing and celebrating the value of that artist’s music fully.”

THERE’S NO QUESTION that the vagaries of the music business have claimed plenty of important recordings over the years.

In February, the 146-track boxed set “Written in Their Soul: The Stax Songwriter Demos” won best historical album at the Grammys. Chronicling the tunesmiths behind the iconic Memphis soul label, it was a 20-year passion project for its producer, Cheryl Pawelski. A former catalog executive at Capitol and Warner Music who now runs her own label, Omnivore, Pawelski said the original tapes that make up the Stax box had actually been thrown out years earlier.

“Fortunately, before they got rid of the tapes sometime in the ’90s, the publisher that owned the material transferred it all to DAT,” said Pawelski, referring to the now outdated digital tape format. “That’s because a single DAT could hold 90 or 120 minutes — it was a space saving measure.”

Pawelski knows that “Written in Their Soul” is a feel-good story in a business often filled with dispiriting tales of lost history. “God knows what’s been thrown out. Just thinking about the stuff that probably wound up in landfills in Memphis or Chicago, it makes me very sad,” she said. “As music lovers, as reissue producers, we’re chasing something that’s very ephemeral in what is essentially a business environment. And I think a lot of music has gotten the raw end of those business dealings.”

Corporate neglect and studio closures aren’t the only reasons tapes get lost or go missing; there have been more nefarious forces at work as well. Jackson, who spent years overseeing Sony/Legacy’s work on the Elvis Presley catalog, noted that even the biggest artists have not been immune from having their recordings stolen.

The Presley archivist Ernst Jorgensen spent “decades putting Elvis’s whole tape collection back together,” Jackson said. “And a lot of times that involved someone saying, ‘Meet me at this motel behind Graceland and I’ll sell you the multitracks of this session.’”

A few years ago, Kehew worked on a reissue of a 20-times-platinum LP by a big major-label act from the 1990s. He noticed the multitracks were not in the label’s vault, but since those tapes weren’t needed for the project, he thought little of it. A few months later, he was approached by someone who had inherited a store of tapes and wanted him to assess the contents. There, among the mostly worthless reels, were “the multitracks for this 20-million-selling album,” Kehew said, “just sitting in a dusty garage in downtown L.A., next to some boots and a bunch of oil cans.”

Someone had checked out the tapes from the label without a signature, he said, later abandoning them. “The label was very happy to have them back. The band probably never even knew they were missing.”

Sandoval believes the untapped holdings of studios and private collections could produce a bounty in the coming years. “There’s recordings people have been sitting on for one reason or another,” he said. “As those folks pass away, and their families find and inherit the tapes, that stuff is finally going to surface.”

Kehew and White are counting on that and hope to streamline the process through their efforts with Master Tape Rescue. “I do believe there are hundreds of studios all over the world that have tape vaults that are worth exploring,” Kehew said. “Or that there are producers or engineers, or estates, who might have material of real value for artists or labels. A lot of stuff is still out there — it’s just a matter of finding it.”
