Things to do in Kundasang

We visited Kundasang, the small town near Kinabalu National Park in the district of Ranau, recently. Here is the list of things to do in Kundasang based on our 2D1N itinerary.

We were here because this was the best place to acclimatize ourselves to the high altitude before scaling Mount Kinabalu. With an altitude of 1900m, Kundasang is a quaint little town with lovely scenery and the stunning Mount Kinabalu as the breathtaking backdrop.

Our Kundasang itinerary includes all the places we planned for. First, we passed the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge, a sight that was a feast for the eyes. We also stopped by Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol at Tuaran to try the famous Sinalau Bakau, a local smoked wild boar meat. Another stopover was Pekan Nabalu, where we could soak in the local culture, purchase souvenirs, and appreciate the spectacular scenery of the surrounding mountains.

Sosodikon Hill

Upon arriving at the Kundasang Market, we were greeted by the frigid weather and misty scenery. Kundasang is a peaceful town, and the people were friendly, providing a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of Kota Kinabalu.

Things to do in Kundasang

While in Kundasang, we visited the Desa Cattle Dairy Farm, a popular tourist spot. The farm was home to hundreds of cows and provided a glimpse into the dairy farming industry. Sosodikon Hill has a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains, another must-visit site, even if you do not intend to climb Mount Kinabalu. Visiting the Alpaca Club was a memorable experience as we could touch and feed the alpacas. We also visited the Poring Hot Spring and walked across the suspension bridge.

Don’t miss the video we shot at Kundasang. It is at the end of this article. 👇👇

The highlight of our trip to Kundasang was seeing the Rafflesia, a rare and beautiful flower in full bloom, in the nearby village.

Here are the details of the itinerary, which covers all the things to do in Kundasang :

1. The Tamparuli Suspension Bridge

Things to do in Kundasang, Tamparuli Suspension Bridge

The Tamparuli Suspension Bridge is a sturdy structure located in the sub-district of Tuaran. It is an alternative route local communities commute between Tamparuli and the main road. This attractive bridge has a legendary tale and has withstood numerous flood events.

Things to do in Kundasang, Tamparuli Suspension Bridge

A plaque is erected in memory of two British soldiers who died on May 18, 1960, while attempting to save a local woman.

According to local folktales, the Tamparuli Low Bridge was built by a British engineer during the post-war colonial period to provide better access for the villagers. However, the bridge repeatedly collapsed during the rainy season due to the river currents. After several unsuccessful attempts to rebuild the bridge, the villagers consulted a medium, who helped them communicate with the spiritual world. The spirits revealed that the bridge was constructed on a sacred site and demanded fair compensation for a human sacrifice to the spirit Ombuakar, who lived inside the Tamparuli River.

Today, the Tamparuli Suspension Bridge is a popular tourist attraction due to its colorful appearance and tall structure. Visitors can enjoy a traditional dance performance by a community of volunteers at the starting point of the bridge. Crossing or visiting the bridge is free, but visitors may leave a tip for the dancers.

2. Stop over at Pekan Nabalu

Things to do in Kundasang, Pekan Nabalu

The charming Pekan Nabalu is a popular stop for locals and tourists traveling from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang town. It is located 12 km from Kinabalu Park.

It’s hard to miss this bustling rest stop as many vehicles are parked here while people browse various food and handicraft stalls set up by local vendors.

Things to do in Kundasang, Pekan Nabalu

The main attraction in Pekan Nabalu is the Nabalu Market, which sells a variety of local handicrafts, souvenirs, fruits, vegetables, and traditional food condiments. There are also public washrooms, a mini-market, and numerous restaurants to take a break and enjoy a meal.

Most notably, the area features a lookout point where visitors can snap pictures with the breathtaking Mount Kinabalu as a backdrop. This view is supposed to be awe-inspiring when you can see the mountain clearly without clouds. Unfortunately, it was raining with heavy mist when we stopped by in the afternoon.

3. Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol

Things to do in Kundasang, Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol

If you’re traveling from Kota Kinabalu to Kundasang, try the local delicacy, Sinalau Bakas. You can find the most popular Sinalau Bakas stalls along the roadway from Tamparuli to Kundasang. It’s hard to miss as busloads of tourists usually stop to taste this native flavor of Sabah.

Things to do in Kundasang, Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol

Sinalau Bakas means smoked wild boar in the indigenous language. The preparation is simple – slabs of marinated wild boar meat are smoked over an open fire pit while the cook flips the succulent flesh and fans the flames underneath. The meat is freshly cooked only after you place your order, so you may need to wait at least 10-15 minutes.

Things to do in Kundasang, Sinalau Bakas Himbaan Bongol

We enjoyed our Sinalau Bakas with traditional chili sauce, which added a little extra kick to the already flavorful dish. Despite just finishing lunch, we ordered RM10 worth of Sinalau Bakas among the four of us and finished everything in a flash.

4. Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

Things to do in Kundasang, Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

Dubbed the ‘Little New Zealand’ of Sabah playfully, this place will transport you to the famous dairy farms of Kiwi land with its cool breeze, misty surroundings, and highland landscapes that create an overseas-like atmosphere.

What draws visitors here is the expansive cattle farm that produces a whopping 900,000 liters of milk annually across 199 hectares of land. Most milking cows are of the Holstein Friesians breed, renowned for their exceptional milk production capabilities.

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

For families seeking an ideal vacation destination, this place offers an array of activities, such as feeding the calves with bottled milk, observing the milk processing procedures, and taking an educational tour of the facilities. If you’ve ever been curious about the milk collection and commercialization process, Desa Cattle Farm is the perfect place to visit.

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm has transformed into a sustainable agro-tourism venture that produces high-quality local-made products such as fresh milk, yogurt, cheese, and their famous Gelato ice cream. There is a retail section where we tasted the dairy products made with their milk.

5. Sosodikon Hill

Sosodikon Hill

Sosodikon Hill (Pyramid Hill) is a popular attraction in the tranquil rural village of Kundasang. Situated at 1465 meters, the hill provides breathtaking views of the valley below and the towering Mount Kinabalu on a clear day.

Adjacent to Sosodikon Hill is the Desa Dairy Farm Kundasang. Therefore, we decided to visit the hill after exploring the farm in the morning. We had to register at the counter before starting the hike.

The entrance fee to Sosodikon Hill is RM5 for adults and RM3 for children for Malaysians, RM10 for international adults, and RM5 for children.

Sosodikon Hill

The hill’s name, Sosodikon, is derived from the Dusun language word “sodik,” a traditional trap that locals once used to capture animals such as deer, squirrels, birds, and other small creatures. The hill’s location was ideal for the villagers to set traps when the area was primarily forested. A sosodikon is a spot where traps can be set.

Sosodikon Hill

The hike to the top of the hill is short and easy, covering only about 400 meters from the entrance and taking just 10 minutes. We were greeted with various beautiful and vibrantly colored flowers blooming on both sides of the trail as we ascended.

Sosodikon Hill

We saw families and individuals of all ages, including young children and the elderly, hiking with us since the hike was not very challenging. There is no need to hire a guide to climb this hill.

Sosodikon Hill

A viewing platform is at the top, with Mount Kinabalu as the backdrop and the valley and farmhouses scattered in between. We were fortunate to have a cloudless and blue sky, which provided the perfect opportunity for taking memorable pictures and selfies.

We climbed Mount Kinabalu the next day. Here is our “ Climbing Mount Kinabalu- the comprehensive guide of the whole hiking trail.” You will love to read it even if you do not intend to climb!

6. The Alpaca Club

The Alpaca Club

Imagine being surrounded by a group of adorable alpacas!

If you’re an animal lover, consider visiting the Alpaca Club , a quaint alpaca farm in Kundasang. Here, you can pet, feed, and unwind with these friendly animals at this petting zoo, which offers a peaceful landscape with Mount Kinabalu as a stunning backdrop.

Alpacas resemble llamas, with their long, slender necks, soft tufts, and innocent eyes, and are furrier, gentler, and just as charming.

The Alpaca Club

You can get up close, learn about their characteristics, and even call them by name. We offered them some dried grass to munch on while other visitors busily took selfies with these furry creatures and their never-ending smiles.

The Alpaca Club

There are numerous picturesque spots to take some lovely photographs, including a unique bench that looks like a bird’s nest, surrounded by twigs.

blog trip ke kundasang

You can stay at the small chalet inside the Alpaca Club to spend more time with the alpacas. The two cozy homestay rooms, you can enjoy the breathtaking views of Mount Kinabalu and the undulating countryside from the balcony.

blog trip ke kundasang

You can visit the Alpaca Club without prior reservations or bookings. Admission costs are as follows: Adults pay RM15/pax, children aged 4-12 pay RM10/pax, and those under four years old pay RM2/pax.

7. Poring Hot Spring

Poring Hot Spring

Poring derives its name from a type of giant bamboo thriving nearby, approximately 40 kilometers from Kinabalu Park headquarters. It is nestled in a lowland forest, about 400 meters above sea level, where gigantic dipterocarp trees can be easily viewed from the pathways.

The hot sulfur spring bath at Poring is renowned and was initially established by the Japanese during World War II. The open-air baths are filled with hot spring water, and an indoor bathtub is also available for those who prefer privacy.

Poring Hot Spring

Poring offers a breathtaking treetop walk on its 43-meter-tall canopy walkway.

Canopy Walkway

Poring Hot Spring

Animals that reside in tropical rainforests reportedly spend 75% of their time underneath the forest canopy, which is situated more than 20 meters above the ground. This naturally derived hiding place serves as a sanctuary for numerous creatures. If you want to observe these creatures, the canopy walkway is the perfect location. When observed from the ground, animals under the canopy appear less wary of humans.

Poring Hot Spring

The canopy walkway comprises zig-zagging suspension bridges made of rope and steel cables that run through the crowns of the tallest, strongest, long-lasting trees, such as “Menggaris” (Kompassia excelsa) and “Seraya” (Shorea sp). This walkway includes many horizontally suspended 5-meter aluminum ladders that have been securely fastened together. The open rungs of the ladders have walking boards covering them, and they are connected with polyester ropes to ensure safety. Netting is enclosed on both sides of the walkway.

Kipungit Waterfall

Kipungit Waterfall

The closest waterfall to Poring Hot Spring & Natural Reserve is Kipungit Waterfall.

Kipungit is quicker to get to than Langanan Waterfall, which requires a two-hour hike. From the Canopy Walk ticket gate, it takes about 15 minutes to get there.

We cool ourselves in the chilly waters of the falls after the climb to the canopy walk.

Although the waterfall may not be tall, heavy rainfall can create a powerful water flow. Therefore, visitors should exercise caution when swimming or playing in the water, as even shallow pools can pose a risk if the current is strong.

8. Kundasang Market

Kundasang Market

We arrived at the misty Kundasang Market in the evening. The market was a lively hub of activity, selling everything from fresh vegetables to beautiful flowers.

Kundasang Market

Kundasang is at the foothill of Mount Kinabalu with its stunning mountain as the backdrop loomed large in the distance and majestic peaks shrouded in mist. We took a moment to take in the beauty of the surroundings.

Kundasang Market

Just behind the market is the Kundasang war memorial. This monument honors the British and Australian soldiers who died during the infamous Sandakan Death Marches.

blog trip ke kundasang

Unfortunately, we were late as it was already closed in the evening.

9. Sighting Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world

Rafflesia,

While exploring the Poring area, we noticed some signs erected by the local villages that indicated the blooming of Rafflesia. In the past, we have attempted to see the largest flower in the world at different locations but were unsuccessful due to the absence of blooming Rafflesia during our visit.

Rafflesia,

Determined not to miss the opportunity this time, we immediately headed toward the area indicated by the sign. Rafflesia is known for its massive size, with some species growing up to 1 meter in diameter. We were lucky to catch the blooming of two Rafflesia, one on day three and the second on day 4.

10. Natural fish spas at Bombon Kg. Marakau

Bombon Kg. Marakau

We stopped by Bombon Kg. Marakau to have a fish spa on the first day in Kundasang. We chose here than the more popular Luanti Fish Massage since it was quite late in the evening.

It was a unique experience that left us feeling rejuvenated. We held the fish pellets in our palms, and the fish swam around our legs, sucking away the dead skin from our feet, leaving us tingling. It gave us a good feeling and the joy of watching the fish, which came close and allowed us to touch them. Being able to interact with them was an amazing experience.

We highly recommend spending a night in Kundasang, whether you’re an adventurous hiker planning to climb Mount Kinabalu or simply seeking a respite from the sweltering heat. The stunning scenery, friendly people, and delicious cuisine make Kundasang a highlight of our trip to Sabah.

Haha.TQ husband & kawan2.

Ringkasan artikel

Pengalaman bercuti kat Sabah ni, kitorang bawa Baby Aali lawat tempat-tempat menarik sekitar Kota Kinabalu & Kundasang.

Sebab background sangat-sangat cantik!

 • Check in hotel

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 1

Sampai je kat KK, kitorang terus gerak untuk makan malam kat restoran kawan, Supreme Ayam Penyet.

Haha!

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 2

Selesai makan, terus check in hotel di area One Borneo Mall.

Tiba hari kedua, bangun pagi terus breakfast kat hotel.

Jalan dia memang berliku-liku. Saranan Dya, kalau korang nak ke Kundasang, pakai jelah pakej pelancongan Sabah

Kalau drive sendiri, lagi penat nak ngadap jalan.

Sebelum sampai Kundasang, korang akan lalu pekan Nabalu.

Kat sini ada jual cenderamata, buah-buahan, amplang, kuih cincin, etc.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 3

Oh, lagi satu nak bagitau.

Memang nampak jelas lah gunung kat belakang.

Korang jangan lupa untuk bergambar kat situ jugak ok?

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 4

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 5

Nak bergambar kat sini pun best.

Selesai beli buah semua, kitorang gerak ke Dairy Farm.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 6

Aktiviti macam biasalah. Tengok lembu, makan aiskrim yogurt, snap gambar sana sini.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 7

Setel kat Dairy Farm, kitorang gerak untuk makan tengahari kat Sabah Tea.

Dah lama tak ke Sabah Tea ni. Banyak rupanya perubahan diorang dah buat.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 8

Haha.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 9

Cumanya kekurangan kat sini, makanan dia mahal dan kurang kena dengan tekak Dya ni.

Selesai makan, kita terus check in kat homestay Kundasang ni.

Kitorang tak book awal pun. Walk in cari homestay mana yang masih ada.

Ingatkan nak stay Kiram Village. Tapi, selalu full kat sini.

Akhirnya dapat jugaklah satu homestay. Tempat yang baru Dya cuba.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 10

Not bad jugak kat sini.

Dya tak ingat nama homestay ni. So far, best jugak homestay ni sebab dia punya sejuk tu boleh diterima lagi.

Dulu kitorang suka stay kat Kiram Village. Kat kiram dia punya sejuk tu memang kaw kaw. Menggigil.

Tapi kat homestay pilihan kalini ngam sangat suhu dia.

Lagipun Dya kan bawak baby, jadi taknak pilih homestay yang suhu terlalu sejuk sebab kesian kat baby nanti.

AKTIVITI HARI KE-3 MASIH DI KUNDASANG:

Hari ke-3 kitorang masih kat Kundasang lagi.

Bangun pagi memang terasa segar sangat.

Terus gerak ke berandah homestay sambil tengok pemandangan gunung depan mata.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 11

Angin sepoi-sepoi sejuk dengan siraman matahari waktu pagi. Fuhh, nyaman je.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 12

Terasa macam nak duduk kat Kundasang setiap hari.

Sarapan pagi harini, kitorang pilih kat restoran Puteri Nabalu.

Serius weh. Kat sini memang cantik untuk ootd!

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 14

Dekor kedai yang berlatarbelakangkan gunung kinabalu buat Dya terasa macam kat luar negara.

Kat sini menu yang sedap, roti dia.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 15

Usai sarapan, kitorang singgah kejap kat Kiram Village untuk bergambar.

Kat Kiram Village dah makin cantik. Dekor kat sini nampak macam english style.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 16

Tak dapat stay kat Kiram, dapat bergambar depan rumah pun jadiklah. haha.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 17

Kemudian, kitorang singgah pulak tengok ikan kat Kg Luanti.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 18

Ikan paling besar kat situ, ikan rupa macam ikan keli. Tapi tak tau lah tu ikan apa.

Tapi memang besar gila.

Selesai je kat Luanti, gerak balik dah petang dah.

Jadi alang-alang balik ke Kota Kinabalu, Dya request kat suami untuk singgah makan lokan bakar.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 19

Gerai Abang Amin.

Sebab kelapa jelly dia sedap sangat-sangat. Rasa kenyal dan rasa manis kelapa.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 20

Siap makan, kitorang terus check in kat hotel di area Sadong.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 21

Malam tu pulak makan di Gayang Seafood restaurant.

Tapi makan kat Gayang kalini macam dah over rated dah.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 22

Tak ramai orang ke Borneo Ant House ni. Lagipun masih baru bukak rasanya ni.

Kalau korang bawa anak-anak, kena pergi sini sebab best gila.

Anak-anak boleh belajar tentang jenis semut. Dan kalau nak bergambar pun best sebab semut kat situ besar-besar.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 23

Harini kitorang makan tengahari kat DNA Station. Kawan Sabahan ajak rasa ambuyat kat sana.

Sebab selama Dya duduk Sabah dari dulu mencari ambuyat.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 29

Baru sekarang dapat merasa.

Untuk makan malam pulak.

Kitorang makan malam kat Restoran Ohsom sebelah hotel.

Pehh, kat sini serius makanan dia sedap! Harga memang berbaloi sangat-sangat berbanding Gayang.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 30

Kalau tahu awal memang kitorang makan seafood kat kedai ni je awal-awal haritu. Haha.

AKTIVITI HARI KE-5 DI KOTA KINABALU:

Macam biasa, sarapan pagi kitorang kat kedai feveret. Kedai Mee Tauhu area Kingfisher.

Mee Tauhu kat sini sedap sangat.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 31

Hari terakhir dekat KK ni, kitorang santai je.

Sambil nak habiskan masa tu, jalan sesaja kat Imago Mall.

Kebetulan pulak ada acara persembahan kebudayaan kat Mall ni.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 32

Sempat jugaklah tengok tarian Sabah kat situ. Ada sumandak cantik jugak situ. Hehe.

Flight bertolak petang. Sementara tunggu sebelum gerak ke airport, Dya makan tengahari kat foodcourt tingkat atas.

Pengalaman Best Bercuti Di Kundasang Sabah 5 Hari 4 Malam 33

Fuh..

Sabah, Malaysia: A Trip to the Mountain Town of Kundasang

The weather is hot and humid here in Malaysia ; sometimes, a wee bit too warm. Tropical climate, lush green rainforests, sunny coastlines. So when I first saw pictures of a place in Malaysia where the Friesian cows roam in the meadows surrounded by rolling hills — I was intrigued. A place at home that doesn’t seem like home! Sounds quite charming, doesn’t it?

Kundasang

The Borneon states of Sabah and Sarawak is a part of Malaysia — but to me, sometimes it feels like they are worlds away and cultures apart. I live in the Malaysian peninsula on the west, and when I flew over to Sabah for the first time (this trip), I felt as if I was taking a flight away from the country. Both Sabah and Sarawak seem so big and unexplored — and I was pretty excited to finally make my way to yet another Malaysian state.

After two days exploring the capital city of Sabah, Kota Kinabalu (you can read about it here: Two Days (of Food and Sights) in Kota Kinabalu ); I made my way to the meadow-like town I saw in the pictures — Kundasang . Tucked in the highlands of Sabah in the district of Ranau , Kundasang sits just below the majestic Mount Kinabalu , Malaysia’s tallest mountain.

As expected of the highest town in the country (at 1,900m above sea level); the Kundasang weather is cooling, the air is misty, and the people plant fresh vegetables — which is what the town is known for. A far cry from the unbearable heat I left behind in Kuala Lumpur. Oh, how I love sweather weathers.

Kundasang Fun

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Getting There From Kota Kinabalu , I decided to drive to Kundasang . The town is not well connected in terms of public transport — and the few groups I saw during my visit to the town (and the other towns nearby) were following a group tour. I rented a car during my trip to Sabah ; and it was pretty easy to get one at the airport.

I had a lovely drive up the mountains. Waze (and Google Maps) gave excellent directions, so all I did was just follow the instructions. It lead me to everywhere I wanted to go — the attractions along the trail, the restaurants in my list; and to my accommodation in Mesilau , which was a secluded chalet on a hillside overlooking Mount Kinabalu . Due to the distance from one site to another, having a car made getting around so much more convenient.

Mesilau

Our Accommodation There are tons of accommodation selections in Kundasang , and the nearby town of Ranau . After all, climbing Mount Kinabalu is quite a popular activity (I plan to do it one day, but probably not anytime soon). From budget hotels and homestays, to private chalets and huge resorts — some offer views of the valley down below, and some, the gorgeous Mount Kinabalu range.

I wanted to be within the mountains (or at least feel that way), so I chose a place further up the hills. I found the T Paradise Chalet (Book with AGODA ) — a standalone house perched on the side of the mountainside; between the towns of Kundasang and Mesilau . I also wanted an unobstructed view of Mount Kinabalu, and what a view the chalet had. I loved watching the mist and clouds cover the magnificent mountain in the evening, and the golden sun lighting up its jaggedy, rocky texture in the morning. It made up for the complete remoteness of the chalet — which can be a little scary at night, to be honest.

Kundasang Cattle Farm

Places to See Other than just admiring Mount Kinabalu at all times — though I wouldn’t have minded spending my days just looking at the mountain over cups and cups of coffee; and do nothing but read and write. But there are other places to see, and I had to get my view (and a shot — got it in that picture above) of those Friesian cows roaming the meadows surrounded by rolling hills!

Desa Cattle Farm Everyone who comes to Kundasang visits the Desa Cattle Farm — as evident from the throngs of visitors at the farm. I was there early in the morning, and the place (and car park) was already packed to the brim. The farm itself isn’t very impressive — aside from the daily milking sessions and the opportunity to feed the calves, there isn’t much to see. The place was really smelly (I know it’s a farm, but still) and the animals looked tired and worn.

So just come for the views. The “ Friesian cows roaming the meadows surrounded by rolling hills” view. The “majestic Mount Kinabalu in all its glory” view. It really is truly stunning, and makes the most gorgeous photos. Every angle and every turn took my breath away — especially when the morning mist gradually clears away, revealing the mountain in its entireness.

Oh, and you can come for the milk, and yogurt, and gelato too. It’s makes quite a yummy breakfast. Entrance to the farm costs RM5 per person.

Kundasang

Kundasang Town and War Memorial Maybe a little history while you’re in town? Even as a Malaysian (and studying Malaysian history all through my school years), I did not know anything about the history of Kundasang — especially during the war. It was at the Kundasang War Memorial (located in the center of town) that I learned about the fate of the Australian and British POWs that marched all the way from the Sandakan POW camp (260km away) to the camp in Ranau. More than 2,000 soldiers died during that period of Japanese rule in World World II. It is known as the Death March .

The memorial also features lovely gardens filled with plants and flowers that can only be found at such a high elevation. Entrance to the memorial is RM2 for locals, and RM10 for tourists. And while I was in town, I also dropped by the 7-days-a-week market that sells local produce (lots of fresh vegetables) and Malaysian sweets and delicacies.

Poring Hot Springs

Poring Hot Springs About a 45-minute drive from Kundasang is the Poring Hot Springs . The place seems to be a pretty popular spot for tourists and tour groups — people come just to bathe in the hot springs (which has been done up and divided into little concrete pools). I however, was satisfied with just a short feet dip (in and out immediately), as I find hot springs too hot for my liking.

If you’re like me — there are other interesting things to see and experience in Poring. There’s a Butterfly Farm, and I especially loved going on the Hanging Bridge after a 10-minute climb up a small hill. There are also several waterfalls, but I was too lazy to make the 4km hike though the jungle to get to it. Best part of the trip though, was that I got to see a fully bloomed Rafflesia — the biggest flower (it’s a parasite, really) in the world! Entrance is RM3 for locals, and RM15 for foreigners (with extra charges for a few other attractions in the park). Poring can be quite interesting if you love nature, though I don’t think that driving all the way to the hot springs was really worth it.

Kundasang

Other Interesting Places Kundasang and the nearby town of Ranau offers other smaller attractions that might be great to make up for time in the highlands (if you need to be constantly on the go or have children with you). There are several vegetable farms you could stop by; as well as the Kundasang Mount Valley and Recreation that has a Flying Fox ride; the Arnab Village to play with rabbits; and the Tagal Luanti Fish Massage Village for a natural ‘fish nibble’ feet spa.

The town of Ranau is famous for its tea — there’s a Sabah Tea Resort in the area where you could stop by for a cup or two. I missed most of these attractions as I was only in Kundasang for 2 days and 1 night — and other than the main attractions, I spent my time just chilling, enjoying the cool air, and admiring Mount Kinabalu!

Kundasang Food

Food and Restaurants There are not much restaurant choices in Kundasang . There is a KFC in town if you prefer fast food; but during my visit, I had lunch at the SS Chinese Restaurant that serves locally grown produce. I especially enjoyed their steamed kampong chicken and the deep fried local mushroom. While in Ranau , I dropped by the Ranau Hakka Food Court for a meal. The food court is divided into two sections — one serving Chinese food, and the other, Malay. I randomly picked one from the Chinese section, and ordered a meal of butter prawns, fried eggplants, sweet and sour pork, steamed eggs and vegetables. It was pretty good.

For dinner (in our chalet perched on the hill and in complete seclusion), we drove a little way down to the nearby H.Benjamin Resort to dine at their restaurant. Food was a mix of local and western, but nothing to shout about. I think my most memorable meal in Kundasang though, was probably the random BBQ wild boar shop I chanced upon along the road down the mountains. The layout itself was eye-catching — a long, long row of wild boar meat upon meat upon meat, being grilled on the concrete stove. I got some meat to go for the journey back to Kota Kinabalu — it was yummy, albeit a little tough (because well, it’s wild boar)!

Kundasang

Fun in Kundasang

So did I get to see what I wanted to see in Kundasang ? A little yes, and a little no. I did get my view of the Friesian cows roaming in the meadows surrounded by rolling hills — but it really didn’t feel as if I was in another country. The pictures may tell a different story; but the air, the smell (bad as I was at the cow farm), the atmosphere and the surroundings were all Malaysia . My Malaysia — but with Friesian cows.

I did have a good time in Kundasang — the views of Mount Kinabalu and the surrounding hills and valleys are absolutely breathtaking, and the cooling weather was simply lovely. The highlands is a great place to just sit back, relax and be with nature; and forget all the stresses and worries back home. I’m glad I decided to make the journey here to check the place out for myself. The next time I’m back — it’ll definitely be to climb Mount Kinabalu. But not just yet.

Hari pertama sampai kat Airport KKIA (Kota Kinabalu International Airport), korang boleh terus pandu sendiri kereta sewa terus check in hotel kat area Bandar Kota Kinabalu (KK).

Walaupun hotel banyak, tapi kena buat plan awal-awal nak duduk hotel mana. Biar tak kalut.

Macam saya, saya pentingkan hotel yang sediakan sarapan. Senang tak payah nak fikir nak sarapan kat mana pagi tu.

Memang jauh beza harganya. Boleh dapat RM119 untuk 1 malam berbanding kalau walk-in RM165. Book sekarang, sebelum tiba kat Kota Kinabalu tu.

Awesome!

Banyak lagi hotel range harga yang tak berapa murah, antaranya;

 • Hotel Grandis kat Suria shopping Mall
 • Hotel Hyatt Regency Kota Kinabalu
 • Le Meridien
 • Marriot Hotel Kota Kinabalu
 • Hilton Kota Kinabalu

Ada jugak hotel murah dalam RM60 satu malam dekat area kampung Air Kota Kinabalu tu, ataupun Promenade Apartment.

Banyak pilihan hotel sebenarnya kat kawasan-kawasan tumpuan tertentu kat Kota Kinabalu ni. Contohnya kat kawasan;

 • Pasar Pilipin,
 • Kampung Air,
 • Imago Shopping Centre,
 • Suria Sabah,
 • Dan lain-lain.

Selain hotel, boleh jugak ambik homestay. Ada 3 homestay yang saya pernah duduk di sekitar Kota Kinabalu;

 • Homestay AFS Putatan
 • Homestay Imago
 • Homestay Time Square (Sebelah Imago)

Jalan-jalan Sekitar Kota Kinabalu

Fuh penat cerita pasal hotel je, ok sambung balik itinerary percutian Kota Kinabalu ni. hehe.

Ataupun orang makan kat Todak. Sebelah je dengan pasar besar KK. Biasa yang popular kat sini gerai Haji Manja, tapi bila dah terlalu orang sebut, jadi overated pulak. Gerai lain pun tak kurang sedap dan harga pun berpatutan jugak. Cubalah.

Kawasan jeti Pulau Manukan. Sewa bot dan enjoy

Jelajah Pulau (Island Hoping)

Dah cukup rehat?

Leceh. Sewa je terus kat Pulau tu. Harga sama je.

Masa beli tiket, orang kaunter tu akan tanya pukul berapa korang nak balik, sebab bot nak datang pick up korang lepas korang selesai berkelah kat pulau tu.

Kalau diaorang tak tanya, korang kena lah bagitau.

Jadi saya sarankan, check out la awal. Dalam pukul 5 pagi camtu. Terus drive ke Kundasang. Masa on the way nak ke Kundasang tu, singgah la kejap kat Nabalu Market.

Kampung Luanti Tagal Sungai Moroli (Fish Spa)

Yuran masuk tagal fish spa Ranau

Ladang Teh Sabah

Sabah Tea teko

Tapi kalau boleh, singgah makan kat Pekan Ranau la. Banyak kedai yang harga murah.

Kat Sabah Tea ni harga makanan tak berapa nak murah 🙁

Poring Hot Spring

So decide lah nak coklat atau yogurt.

Saya rekemen Gelato Perisa Yogurt!

Kawasan dairy farm kundasang. Dulu tak ramai camni.

Kinabalu Park

sunset taman negara kinabalu. Jamu mata dengan pemandangan indah.

Ingat, kat Sabah ni semuanya awal sejam.

Pukul 7 macam dah pukul 8 malam tau.

Jadi saya stay je kat area Kundasang ni sebab kalau nak balik pun dah malam, dan banyak kabus so saya cadangkan korang stay kat Hotel atau Chalet sekitar Kundasang.

Chalet Murah di Kundasang, Kinabalu View Guest House Kundasang.

Apa lagi yang kita nak selain menikmati pemandangan indah kat Kundasang ni?

Bilik penginapan yang murah!

ruang parkir kinabalu view guest house. Cukup untuk parking 10 biji kereta.

Jadi saya rekemen sangat Kinabalu View Guest House ni untuk korang.

Ini sebabnya;

 • Harga murah

Adzril Bloggertalk . Subscribe ye.

Tips: Untuk penginapan kat Area Kundasang, dinasihatkan untuk book awal sebelum datang ke Sabah. Sebab nanti kalau dah sibuk kat sini tak sempat nak cari tempat penginapan.

Tanjung Aru Kota Kinabalu Fountain. Air pancut berirama ni bermula jam 7 petang setiap hari.

Elok terus mintak hantar kereta tu kat Airport, kena bagitau la pukul berapa flight korang sampai kat Airport Kota Kinabalu (KKIA) tu.

Bayaran untuk sewa memang murah. Lagi kalau korang pandai tawar harga hehe.

Thanks.

A good post adzril. Barula saya tau Manukan dekat ngan KK rupanya. Saya tengah study samada nak travel dia KK-kundasang atau nak terus ke tawau & semporna. Mungkin adzril bole bagi pandangan beza manukan & semporna?

Kalau setakat nak snorkeling and tengok air jernih, manukan je.

45 minit naik flight dr kk.

Tp kalau nak merasa jugak.

Alhamdulillah. Thanks tuan.

Kalau bergerak dlm 5.30pm dari airport ke Kundasang. Sesuai tak waktunya?

Your first visit of the day should starts with the Yayasan Sabah Tower , the tallest building in Kota Kinabalu. Formally known as Menara Tun Mustapha or the Sabah Foundation Building, this 30 storey circular glass marvel of architecture was built in 1977. It towers above the city of Kota Kinabalu at 122 meters across the Sabah skyline, and is one of the few hanging type structures in the world. Then, head over to Likas, to see the Floating Mosque , one of the few unique floating Islamic houses of worship in Malaysia. The structure in itself is a sight to behold, as the perfect symphony of sea and light reflects its pearl white shadow onto the surrounding man-made lagoon. The mosque is also the largest in Kota Kinabalu, with a prayer hall that can accommodate up to 12,000 people. Visitors can also don a traditional Malays garment and see the various hallways, as well as take the opportunity to learn more about Islam.

After lunch, proceed to visit the Poh Toh Tze Temple . This wonderful Buddhist temple is famous to many of the local Chinese worshippers, with its vividly carved rooftops imbued with elegant Eastern culture, as well as the pillars and walls that have a distinct Chinese flavor. Inside the compounds lay 10 large statues of dainties – including the Goodness of Mercy who welcomes all who enters the temple. After the temple tour ends, make your way to the Handicraft Market , where you can get great bargains at the selection of stalls selling interesting and skillfully crafted items, from bags to jewelry and artistic works of art. The market itself is housed within a wooden structure, with unique pointed arches that juts out of its main building. This is a perfect place to get mementos and gifts for your loved ones. Another market included in the tour is the Seafood Market , where one can find an array of fresh seafood for sale at discounted prices. Situated only next to the jetty, one can still see the fresh catches of the day being unloaded, and hives of people flocking to purchase the freshest catches. Give a go at haggling, or simply indulge in the pleasure of seeing the interesting and lively catches that are brought to shore.

After that, proceed onwards to Signal Hill – a hilltop point which gives you a birds’ eye view of the panoramic Kota Kinabalu city skyline, its vast surrounding greenery and exotic tropical islands. The hill is the highest point in Kota Kinabalu, and is a perfect spot to take a wonderful group photo and the excellent time you are having on the journey. Right after, proceed for a sumptuous dinner in Kota Kinabalu and enjoy the sights and sounds as dusk approaches.

After dinner, head back to the hotel for a good night’s rest.

Day 2: Poring Hot Spring – Kinabalu Park – Filipino Market

After breakfast, take a leisurely drive towards the Poring Hot Springs , where lunch will be served at the Poring Hot Spring Restaurant. Opt to venture to the Treetop Canopy Walk. A brisk 20 minute walk takes one up a series of suspension bridges spread at the top of the tropical rainforest. These forests are home to the Menggaris Tree – also known as the King of the Forest. At 41 metres above the ground and spanning 157 metres in length, visitors can expects the sights and sounds of the Borneo jungle as they embrace the beauty of the wilderness. Right after, proceed to the Butterfly Farm – a natural reserve for the endangered and rare species of butterflies, stick insects, rhinoceros beetles and more. It has a large landscaped enclosure featuring a nursery, a hatchery and a garden. An on-going breeding and research programme make it a delightful view. Moving on, immerse in the warm waters of Poring Hot Springs which are rich in sulphuric minerals. The natural spring water has a very positive and therapeutic effect that stimulates the body and helps ease muscle aches.

Next, head on over to Kinabalu Park to enjoy the magnificent allure of Mount Kinabalu, the tallest peak in South East Asia, its towering peak high above the clouds. Arrive at the Kinabalu Park Headquarters, take a quiet stroll along the natural trails of the Botanical Gardens, and feel the refreshing air caress your cheeks. Kinabalu Park is home to an estimated 4,500 species of flora and fauna – including 1,500 genres of orchids (77 of which are endemic to Kinabalu), 326 birds’ species, 290 different types of butterflies and around 100 different kinds of mammals. Next, take a tour to the Mountain Garden and Exhibition Hall. Here alternatives are given to explore the different trails around Kinabalu Park. Before leaving for the city, make a brief stop at the Park Headquarters Office to receive a World Heritage Site Certificate.

For dinner and a good bargain, visit the Filipino Market which offers a huge variety of cheap food. The famous market is known for selling items such as coconuts, noodles and seafood, handicrafts as well as souvenirs like fold out tables and rattan baskets. Above the din of haggling, take the opportunity to see the Sabah lifestyle at its core, and watch how the locals go about their day to day routines. Shop at your own pace and be sure to purchase some dried seafood, a local favorite back home from the nearby seafood as a souvenir.

Day 3: Sapi Island – Mamutik Island – Jesselton Waterfront

None of the tour is Sabah is complete without paying a visit to one of its magnificent islands. After breakfast, head out to the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park and pay a visit to two of the most beautiful cluster of islands – Sapi Island and Mamutik Island . A chartered speed boat can be arranged to take visitors to the islands, which boast pristine shallow waters, rich coral gardens and fine, white sandy beaches. Take a dip into the crystal clear blue ocean or laze under the tropical sun with a book in hand, while you listen to the soft echoes as the wave hits the shore. Opt to partake in the various sea sports activities provided on the island (includes banana boat, parasailing or speed boat). If you want to just relax and unwind, then kick back and chill along the sandy beach, and bask in the warm rays of the tropical sun.

After the island tour, heads on to the Jesselton Waterfront , a world-class waterfront development and the first of its kind in the region. The Jesselton Waterfront is a fantastic sight to behold, showcasing an incorporation of colonial as well as modern architectural design. Talk a brisk walk along the wooden paneled platforms, and have dinner at one of the many restaurants, as one takes in the serene scenery of the blue ocean and the crimson red sunset. After dinner, head back to the hotel for a good night’s rest.

Day 4: Mari Mari Cultural Village – Departure Start the day with a slow drive towards the Mari Mari Cultural Village , which is approximately 25 minutes away from the city centre of Kota Kinabalu. Upon arrival at the village entrance, be welcomed by the sight of ancient Borneo architecture, and take a step back in time of olden days. Be dazzled by the authentic wooden towers, distinct wooden houses and structures decorated by nature. Take the opportunity to experience the different lifestyles of different indigenous tribes of Sabah. Blend in and see the culture like it really is. The houses here are all built by generations of Sabah native tribesmen, and are different in terms of style and design, each representing their own tribe. You can also visit the replica huts and see the daily routines of the olden Borneo natives come to life. Have a go at blowpipe making, fire-starting, and understand tribal tattoos to learn the mythical meanings behind each symbol. Also get a chance to see how the locals make vests out of tree husks, and also experience the traditional dance atop the ‘Lataran’ or traditional woven trampoline like floor. Also not forgetting are the various Sabahan delicacies that one will get to try, like the Montoku or rice wine, steamed rice and fish as well as vegetables cooked using bamboo shoots. Embrace the warm hospitality and partake in the cultural performances by the tribe representatives.

Your visit to Mari Mari Cultural Village ends with a delicious home-cooked authentic Sabahan meal, before you bid the village farewell and head to the airport, bringing the fantastic memories from the Kota Kinabalu with you.

<img style=

 • #HHWT Tip : For snorkelling, diving, island-hopping, and other water-based activities, it’s best to book your tours in advance. There are many local tour operators around Jesselton Point including Diverse Borneo, Sunny Reef Divers, and Scuba Junkie KK. Since the package prices and reviews vary, we recommend researching online before confirming your booking. It’s also cheaper to book your tours directly with the local operators.

 • Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park consists of five beautiful islands: Gaya, Manukan, Sapi, Mamutik and Sulug Islands. A standard day tour can cover about 2-3 islands in a day, so get ready for an afternoon of sun, sand and sea!
 • #HHWT Tip : Avoid visiting Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park between November and February due to the rough sea conditions.

Explore the islands at Tunku Abdul Rahman

Gaya island.

 • Gaya Island is the largest island in the park, and the name originates from the word ‘Gayo’, which means ‘big’ in the Bajau language.
 • The best ways to appreciate your time on the island are by swimming at Police Beach and diving to see the fish and coral gardens around the island.
 • Thanks to its clear and calm water, snorkelling and diving at Gaya Island are suitable for beginners except during the wet season between November and February.
 • If you’re planning to stay overnight, check out Gaya Island Resort and Bunga Raya Island Resort .

Manukan Island

 • Manukan Island is the second-largest island in the park and the country’s first marine national park.
 • Famous for its beautiful white sandy beach, it’s no surprise to see families and couples swimming in the crystal-clear water.
 • It’s also a popular snorkelling site to see parrotfish, butterflyfish, and sergeant major fish. It’s advisable to wear a life jacket while snorkelling, and you can rent a life jacket on the island. Children’s sizes are available but in limited quantities.
 • P.S. You can stay overnight at the Sutera Sanctuary Lodges at Manukan Island to make the most of your time here.

Sapi Island

 • Sapi Island is widely frequented by adventure seekers thanks to the popularity of the Coral Flyer, the world’s longest island-to-island zipline.
 • Connecting Sapi Island to Gaya Island, visitors can cross the 250-meter zipline above the clear turquoise water for an island experience unlike any other.
 • The fee is RM64 per person (Malaysian) and RM86 per person (non-Malaysians). Children below 12KG need to sign up for a tandem zipline (accompanied by an adult) with an additional fee of RM30 per person.

Mamutik Island

 • Mamutik Island is the smallest island in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park. It’s also less touristy, which is perfect for anyone who enjoys some quiet time by the beach.
 • It’s safe to snorkel at Mamutik Island, but the water condition is rougher here as compared to the other islands. We recommend only experienced divers or snorkelers here and do adhere to safety precautions at all times.
 • When swimming along the sandy beach, do note that the water gets deep at approximately 10 meters from the shore (don’t worry, just look out for the markers!). If you’re not a good swimmer, be sure not to swim too far.

Sulug Island

 • Sulug Island is also a great choice to escape the beach crowd as it’s the furthest island in Tunku Abdul Rahman National Park.
 • Since it has the least number of tourists (almost none!), you won’t find facilities or food stalls here. Instead, you’ll be treated to a view of the sea complete with seashells and corals lining along the beaches.
 • #HHWT Tip : Since it’s the least frequented island, most boat operators would likely turn down anyone who is visiting alone as the boat transfer service is expensive. We recommend coming in a group if you’re interested to visit.

Dinner at Borenos Fried Chicken

There’s a reason why Borenos Fried Chicken is a local’s favourite. With two outlets in Kota Kinabalu (the other one at Star City Mall), this Sabahan fast-food chain specialises in deep-fried and juicy spring chicken. • Kinabalu Park is Malaysia’s first World Heritage Site and home to the majestic Mount Kinabalu, the country’s highest peak. It’s less than 2 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu.
 • If you’re not planning to climb Mount Kinabalu during this trip, Kinabalu Park is a great place for nature lovers to experience the lush rainforest minus the hike!
 • For first-time jungle trekkers, the Silau Silau Trail is popular among beginners as this 3KM trail has flat terrains and many exit points. Another one is the Mempening Trail, an easy 2.5KM trail that’ll lead you to the Silau Silau stream.
 • While jungle trekking, try to spot a Rafflesia, the biggest flower in the world.
 • Known for its reddish-brown colour, Rafflesia is a five-petaled flower with vertical spikes in the middle.
 • You can tell if there’s a Rafflesia nearby due to the repugnant smell, similar to rotting meat. The scent is said to attract flies, so it can help to pollinate the flower.

 • Situated at the foothill of Mount Kinabalu, spot the Friesian cattle, a breed of dairy cattle, backed by the picturesque mountain view. You won’t find scenery like this anywhere else in Malaysia!
 • You can also feed the cows with bottled milk or watch how the milk is processed at the farm for an additional fee.
 • Before you leave, don’t forget to buy the farm’s homemade fresh milk, yoghurt and gelato too! We’ve checked with the farm and all ingredients used are sourced from halal-certified suppliers.

 • Admission fee : RM5 per adult, RM4 per child (7-12 years old), Free (children aged 6 and below)

Just an 18-minute drive from Desa Dairy Cattle Farm, Restoran Syah Adilah is a humble eatery that serves Chinese-Muslim dishes such as mee udang, dry butter prawn, sweet and sour chicken and bihun goreng. To stay warm in the chilly Kundasang weather, enjoy your meal (and hot tom yam soup) at the restaurant’s indoor seating area.

#HHWT Tip : This restaurant has a small prayer space. Do remember to bring your own prayer garment

Opening hours : Open daily; 6AM-9PM

Address : Jalan Tamparuli-Ranau, 89300 Kundasang, Sabah.

Contact : +6019 530 3441 / +6019 860 6969

Soak your feet at Poring Hot Spring

 • Before you leave, make your way to Poring Hot Spring located in Ranau, Sabah, which is a 45-minute drive from Restoran Syah Adilah.
 • If you’ve paid an entrance fee for Kinabalu Park & Poring Hot Spring, you can enter using the same entrance ticket. Otherwise, the admission fee is RM3 per person (Malaysians) or RM15 per person (non-Malaysians).
 • Packed with outdoor pools of mineral-rich hot spring water, it’s a lovely place to soak your feet after a long day. It is said that the hot spring water helps to improve blood circulation.
 • There are many pool options to choose from, ranging from public outdoor hot spring pools to private indoor bathtubs (with additional charge). The outdoor pools have low barriers between the pool and the indoor bathtubs are located in private rooms.
 • To adjust the temperature, each open-air pool has 2 taps, one for the hot water from the natural hot spring and the other for the cold water from the waterfall.
 • Changing rooms and toilets are also available at this hot spring.

 • Explore the canopy walk to get a closer look at the nature and biodiversity of Poring Hot Spring. There’s a separate admission fee for the canopy walk, which is RM3 per adult (Malaysians) and RM5 per adult (non-Malaysians)
 • You can complete the entire canopy walk in 30 minutes, but the bridge may be nerve-wracking for small children or anyone who’s afraid of heights.
 • Do note that the canopy walk closes at 4PM, so be sure to arrive latest by 3.30PM.
 • Opening hours : Open daily; 8AM-6PM
 • Address : Jalan Poring, 89300 Ranau, Sabah

 • From Kota Kinabalu International Airport, take a 50-minute flight to Sandakan. The average flight fare is between RM120 and RM220 for a return flight.
 • Some of the flights that fly directly to Sandakan are AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, and Firefly.

Get ready for a Kinabatangan River adventure

 • If you’re a first-timer to Sandakan, make the most of your Kinabatangan River adventure by joining a tour. It’ll be tricky to get there on your own, so we recommend signing up for a tour for this part of your trip.
 • There are many resorts and travel agents in Kinabatangan that offer 2D1N or 3D2N packages, which include multiple river cruises along the Kinabatangan River. The tours usually cover accommodation, transportation, and food (unless stated).
 • In this itinerary, we’ll cover where to stay and things to do at the Kinabatangan River in 2D1N. The experience differs according to your tour package.

Check in to your accommodation

 • Start your adventure at Bilit where Borneo Natural Sukau Bilit Resort , Nature Lodge Kinabatangan and Bilit Rainforest Lodge are among the accommodations located along the river. If you have a specific budget, there are other affordable riverside resorts and lodges to choose from.
 • Situated along Kinabatangan River, here’s where you can catch a first glimpse of Sabah’s rich ecosystem and wildlife.
 • Home to Borneo’s famous primates, the orangutan and proboscis monkey, you might chance upon them during your river cruises too.

Enjoy a river cruise along Kinabatangan River

 • Known as the second-longest river in Malaysia, the Kinabatangan River (Sungai Kinabatangan) has a length of 560KM that flows from the mountains of southwest Sabah to the Sulu Sea.
 • Most tours will offer 2-3 Kinabatangan river cruises, which provides plenty of opportunities to spot the diverse wildlife along Kinabatangan River. For a 2D1N package, you’ll go on two river cruises on the first day and the final cruise on the second day.
 • If you arrive at noon, you can join the evening cruise at 4PM where you can spot proboscis monkeys, silver leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, hornbills, flying lemur and kingfishers along the river. Be sure to bring your binoculars!
 • Alternatively, you can hop on the night cruise that starts at 7PM. You will spot fewer animals during this time, but this is your chance to see nocturnal creatures like saltwater crocodiles or birds such as kingfishers and hornbills sleeping on the branches. If the weather is good, you may even spot some fireflies too.
 • Since you’ll be spending time outdoors, it’s best to wear insect repellent, sunblock, walking shoes, leech socks and a comfortable t-shirt and long pants. Remember to bring a raincoat during the wet season between November and February.

Return to your accommodation

 • After a fun-filled day, head over to your accommodation and enjoy a restful evening amidst the sounds of nature.

Day 5: See you again, Sabah!

Optional: sepilok orangutan rehabilitation centre & bornean sun bear conservation centre.

 • If you have an extra day to spend in Sandakan, we suggest visiting the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre .
 • Located at Sepilok, the centre takes great care of young orangutans that are orphaned or injured due to illegal logging, deforestation and hunting.
 • The tour begins with a video presentation before you explore the platform to see orangutans swinging from tree to tree.
 • To catch the feeding times at 10AM or 3PM, come early at 8.45AM or 1.45PM, so that you’ll have time for the presentation and platform walk.
 • #HHWT Tips : Visitors are not allowed to have hands-on contact with the orangutans as the primates are very susceptible and vulnerable to human diseases. Therefore, human contact is kept to a minimum at this centre.
 • Opening hours : Open daily; 9AM-11AM, 2PM-3PM
 • Address : Sabah Wildlife Department, W.D.T. 200, Sandakan, Jalan Sepilok, Sepilok, 90000 Sandakan
 • Admission rate : RM5 per person (Malaysians), RM30 per person (non-Malaysians)

Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre

 • Just a 2-minute walk from Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, visit the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre , home to the world’s smallest bear!

 • The centre focuses on raising conservation awareness and providing rehabilitation of the Malayan sun bear, which is currently listed as Vulnerable (to extinction) in the IUCN Red List.
 • Living in tropical lowland forests, the Malayan sun bear can only be found in Southeast Asia and here’s a good opportunity to see it up close!
 • During feeding, these bears are known for its very long tongue that helps them to extract honey from beehives. That’s why, the sun bear is also called the ‘honey bear’ in Malaysia and Indonesia.
 • Opening hours : Open daily; 9AM-3.30PM
 • Address : PPM 219, Elopura, 90000 Sandakan
 • Admission fee : RM5 per adult (Malaysians) and RM30 per adult (non-Malaysians)

Take a flight to Kota Kinabalu International Airport

 • Take a 50-minute flight from Sandakan Airport to Kota Kinabalu International Airport .
 • From Kota Kinabalu, you can take another direct flight back to Kuala Lumpur or Singapore.

There are many things to do in Sabah, and that’s the exciting part about planning your adventure here. You’ll never know the amazing and unique experiences you’ll have at Kota Kinabalu, Kundasang and Kinabatangan until you step foot into Sabah. Whether you’re an adventure seeker or nature lover, there’s more to Enchanting Sabah than meets the eye. #BahMariLah

Trip to Kundasang, Sabah: What to Know & Where to Go

Kundasang, Sabah is the place all of us have always drawn as a child - a small wooden house with a magnificent view over the paddy fields and the majestic mountains beyond.

If you are keen in exploring the best of Sabah, Kundasang is guaranteed to take your breath away with its majestic views.

A sanctuary away from the city, prep yourself before a Kundasang trip with our comprehensive guide on what to know and where to go for your next visit to the Land below the Wind.

Take our words, do not leave Kundasang without visiting these places .

Best time to visit Kundasang

Though Kundasang opens its doors all year round, the best time to visit the place is anytime between January and April. Heavy rainfall is expected from May to December.

How to get to Kundasang, Sabah?

Kundasang is a small town without any airport therefore it is impossible to take a flight directly from Singapore to Kundasang. Alternatively, Singaporeans may take a flight to Kota Kinabalu instead.

Located nearby to the country, the travel time from Singapore to Kota Kinabalu is only 2 hours and 25 minutes.

The airport is only 8 kilometres away from the city of Aso where there are car rental services available for visitors to rent and drive up to Kundasang directly from the airport.

The cheapest month to travel to Kota Kinabalu would be in May when the flight tickets are only 175 Singapore dollars. However, in other months, the flight ticket does not vary much as it may cost between 186 dollars to 255 dollars only.

What are the airlines flying to available?

Seeing how Singapore and Malaysia are neighbouring countries, there are plenty of airlines that can bring Singaporeans to Kota Kinabalu.

One of the most famous and commonly used would be Air Asia. It is a low-cost airline that offers one of the lowest prices in Asia. Other than that, there is Malaysia Airlines, Malindo Air, Singapore Airlines, Firefly, Scoot and many more.

There are up to 10 flights to Kota Kinabalu weekly. All of the flights are direct flights and have no transit or layover in other states. Therefore travellers would definitely arrive in Kota Kinabalu in a blink of an eye.

Where to Go?

1. get the nz feels at desa dairy farm.

Desa Dairy Farm

These lush green hills overlooking a dairy farm is not the New Zealand outback; this is Desa Dairy Farm in Kundasang, Sabah. Still, you can get photos to trick almost anyone into believing that you were in New Zealand. (Psst… We won’t tell!😉)

After a trip to watch the processing of milk and feeding the adorable calves with bottled milk, get some souvenirs, especially popular dairy products like fresh milk, natural cheese and gelato ice-cream.

2. Sip in tranquility at Sabah Tea Garden

Sabah Tea Garden

Whether you’re a tea person or not, you will appreciate a trip to the sprawling tea plantation in the cool mountain air.

Take a tour at the Tea Factory at an additional fee to watch how tea is processed.

For the adventurous, trek along the trails to the peak of Kamunsu Hill in the early hours to catch a magnificent view of sunrise or embark on a night walk to check out unique insect species.

Save the best for the last - have a sip of Sabah’s finest tea without which your Sabah Tea Garden visit wouldn’t be complete. Take your pick from 8 flavors - cinnamon, ginger, geranium, lemongrass, pandan, tongkat ali and misai kucing .

Visitors are also able to purchase the tea at the shop on site.

3. Defeat gravity at The Upside Down House

The Upside Down House will literally turn your world upside down. The attraction features a traditional

Sabah ‘kampung’ house with a living room, bedrooms, a toilet, kitchen and veranda, all upside down!

Being the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, this architectural wonder has also been included in the Malaysia Book of Records. Best of all, the place is wheelchair-friendly!

Note: While indoor photography is prohibited, visitors are allowed to pose with outdoor upside-down attractions.

4. Visit the fresh market of Kundasang

Once a quiet village, the now small town of Kundasang is home to independent traders selling produce harvested from the farmland nearby. Visitors will not miss the Kundasang fresh market, a stretch of stalls along the Kundasang-Ranau highway.

Other than local produce and flowers from the surrounding nurseries, drop by for souvenirs such as handicraft and clothes, all on sale at a good bargain.

5. Remember the fallen heroes at Kundasang War Memorial

Established in 1962, Kundasang War Memorial was built to commemorate the brave Australian and British prisoners of war who died in Sandakan and during the infamous death marches to Ranau in World War II.

The memorial also honors the North Borneo heroes who risked their lives to help the prisoners of war. What makes the garden unique is its four beautiful gardens - the Australian Garden, the English Garden, the Borneo Garden and the Contemplation Garden and Pool - to represent the different nationalities of the fallen heroes.

6. Get close to the birds with Tandem Paragliding Ranau

To compulsive thrill seekers, the sky is the limit.

With nothing between you and the sky, Tandem Paragliding Ranau gives you the wings to fly like a wild bird. Suspended in a harness some 700 metres or so above, fly on top of the lush Kokol Hill forest as you sing to R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly.”

Note: The key factor of a flight is ideal wind and weather conditions. There will be no refunds in case inclement weather persists. Instead, the session will be rescheduled to a later date.

About the Location

Nabalu Nabalu has a unique market consisting of local handmade crafts, food and fruits such as “buah tarap” and “kuih cincin” and it is one of the best places in Sabah to view Mount Kinabalu and the surrounding mountains in its splendour from the dedicated look out point and makes for a great location take photos.

Desa Cattle Dairy Farm or “Little New Zealand” is located here and comes with a spectacular view of majestic Mount Kinabalu. Next place of interest would be the Alpaca Club, which is home to the first and only alpacas in Sabah.

Kota Kinabalu Kota Kinabalu as the state capital of Sabah is filled with a variety of activities and it is big on culture. A cultural tour will include the Art Attic, Sabah Museum and Sabah City Mosque. We went on a private tour to Kundasang and it didn't disappoint. Our guide (Tommy) was patient, extremely knowledgeable and professional. He also ran through KK and Borneo history! Impressive.
