The Bones. Original band name. I guess that band name does sound pretty inventive and original is you’re Swedish. Anyways, The Bones are a powerhouse rock band from Karlskrona, Sweden. They have been together since 96’ and have worked ever so hard over the years to secure their place in the rock and roll world with fantastically played guitars, plenty of angst and some equally memorable songs. When they perform live, that is what it is all about. They walk out on stage with guitars over their shoulders, ready to party and to engage this audience in what they do, and that is some fantastically constructed rock. The lights go down and the amps go up, most likely to 11. It’s pretty amazing to see them play these songs live, and make them work, as on the recordings there are some over dubbed guitars making some huge walls of sounds. They play so well live and are very tight. The audience dig it, as they jump, sing, dance, mosh and generally have a good time. “Smile of the Cobra” is fantastically played tonight.

BONES UK Talk Grammy Award Nomination, Touring With Korn and Breaking Benjamin, More

' src=

The band are nominated for Best Rock Performance.

bones rapper uk tour

(TRR) – BONES UK kicked off their 2020 winter tour with Korn and Breaking Benjamin last night at the PPL Center in Allentown, PA. Merely 72 hours after the tour begins, the duo fly across the country to Los Angeles to attend the Grammy Awards. BONES UK nabbed a Best Rock Performance nomination for their single “Pretty Waste” from their self-titled debut LP.

Backstage before the show, Rosie Bones and Carmen Vandenberg sat spoke with The Rock Revival about the Grammys, their current tour, and more. This band is definitely one that needs to find their way onto your new music radar, as they are just phenomenal. We can certainly see these ladies, along with drummer Heavy, tearing up the rock charts for years to come.

Their live performance is mesmerizing, as the live environment is where Bones UK truly shines. Check out our full interview below to learn more about their creative style, their mission statement, new music, touring and more.

Q: Congratulations on your Grammy nomination for “Pretty Waste”! How surreal was it when you got that phone call?

BONES UK: Thank you!

ROSIE BONES: She [Carmen Vandenberg] got a text from our label that said call me straight away, and he lives down the road so she thought maybe it was a car crash or something, so she was like ‘oh my gosh, is everything okay?’ So, then she called him and he said ‘I’d liked to speak with the Grammy-nominated Carmen Vandenberg.

CARMEN VANDENBERG: We didn’t expect it! We didn’t even know we had been submitted for it!

Q: So the whole thing came as a big surprise?

RB: It’s really nice because it feels like we’re going not just for us, but we’re going to represent a lot of new bands who kind of felt like they would never ever stand a chance of being on a program like that, so for us it’s bigger than just us, it’s like we kind of the poster kids for anyone can do it, you know, the underdogs.

Q: We were reading up on a lot of your mission statement on your website and it really hits home and we found it very touching. How important does that message continue to be through your music and art? We were like ‘hell yes, f**k fitting in’!

RB: It’s huge and we always have to say this because we want to speak to girls and boys alike. It’s  so important for us to sort of get that cross section of, you know, although we are we are girls we hate the idea of boys feeling isolated from us because we’re girls as well it’s really weird. It’s about anyone who feels like an underdog or someone not represented or feels insecure or something like that … we want to be their spokespeople.

Q: Your unplugged album comes out 1/24. What led to your decision to release an unplugged album … was there a fan demand?

CV: Our label just asked us to do an acoustic rendition for a few of our songs and like with most things, we took it somewhere else and decided to make a movie out of it and then not just us playing acoustic guitars but we rearranged it for different instruments that you wouldn’t expect to hear on Bones tracks. And then Rosie had this visual concept as well, so we took it somewhere else and had a lot of fun.

Q: Speaking about the visual elements, we adore the fact that you have not forgotten the art of the music video. We love the black and white aesthetic, they look amazing. We love to see that visual side to the music.

RB: For me, I come from an art school background, so the visuals have always been as important to me as the music. I mean, obviously the music is important, but I think it all needs to be the same thing and it needs to be cohesive. It needs to come from us and building into the world. Everything comes from us! We work with other people and other directors, but it’s always like I’ve got an idea of something and then Carmen helps me make it happen.

Q: How long ago did you two make the transition from the UK to Hollywood? How much of an inspiration has that been, because Hollywood is definitely a different animal, all on its’ own.

RB: I think that song content wise Hollywood is a f**cking huge inspiration for that! A lot of the stuff that we talk about, we’re talking about naturally in London and it’s so much more amplified in Hollywood. You go to a party up in the Hollywood Hills to see like, what the beauty standard is in Hollywood and it’s f**king wild! We’re like a beast in Hollywood. It’s insane. Everyone is getting plastic surgery and all that, but despite all that everyone is still f**king cripplingly insecure. And then that’s such a strange tension for me and then we both agree that it’s a weird thing of sort of like all these people that look amazing, but haven’t done any work on their inside so they’re all like insecure and unhappy.

bones rapper uk tour

CV: What they want to be seen as is more important than how they actually are! Social media is sometimes all that they care about!

RB: They are patching up holes, but the water is still sprouting up because they haven’t actually stopped the leak.

Q: Absolutely! We laugh everyday at what goes down on various social media profiles. It’s not real life!

RB: I don’t want to be down on anyone. Some people like amplifications because that’s how they want to look, but for us, it’s like you can’t run from insecurities by patching up or putting on more make-up. If you want to deal with that stuff you have to work it out in an internal way.

CV: Again, we don’t want to criticize at all because if it make somebody happy and that’s what they want, you know it’s their choice. It’s more for the sadness it gives us when you see the people aren’t happy … they are cripplingly insecure, but we’re not here to tell anybody how to live.

RB: I think it’s just kids, well, not just kids, but adults and well, all of us, who think that there is this thing we have to be or way that we have to look and it’s chasing after that and you’re never going to beat it.

Q: You debut album came out back in July of 2019. Was it hard to make the cut for which songs would end up on the album? How long did it take to put together and Is there any new material in the works?

RB: First off, we never really wanted to do an album, well, Carmen wanted to do an album because she’s old school! I never really cared that much because it’s a bit dead, well, the format is a bit dead. When we met with the label, we had done a lot of singles and sort of like, psychologically, put them in a box and then say we can go move on and we felt like an album was really necessary. A lot of the songs had already been out, but we rewrote them to make them better and then picked up on other things we had been working on and made them kind of like Bones mission statement. We released it and the day it came out we started working on album number two, so that is what’s happening at the moment amongst another couple of things that are very exciting.

Q: How far along are you in the writing process for album number two?

RB: We’ve got quite a lot of songs. We went to Lake Tahoe the other day and did a big writing session and like with everything we are trying to write without judgment creatively. You can do a thing as a band, where you judge things too much and you kind of stifle the creativity, by going ‘is this good?’ And then you just stopped writing, you start worrying about like whether something is sh*t or good. So what we have been trying to do is just write and not rejudge things. Just stack it and then listen back to everything in a couple months and then you’ll know what works. I think that if you are too judgy too early, you start to get writers block and you just become blocked and it’s not cool.

bones rapper uk tour

Q: We are always curious if there is now more pressure on an artist because it feels like we are stuck in a singles market, where people don’t want to listen to a full album anymore, as they just want the next thing immediately.

CV: An album has become more like a collector’s item for fans that really care, at least the physical object. It’s doing single, single, single and then when the whole things up then you do a package with vinyl or something for the fans.

RB: People are going to pick whatever songs they want even if you do release an album. Most of the time these days with Spotify and stuff people are just picking whatever f**king song they like and putting it on a playlist. An album is really only relevant for people that really love a band.

CV: Or for people who come out to shows and what to buy something and be supportive.

RB: We can have real fun and that is what we are planning with the next thing and it’s going to be super cool.

Q: Does it ever surprise you with which songs fans gravitate towards?

RB: Yeah, there is that song that both of our moms like, with the big splashy solo, but usually it does come as a bit of a surprise. Also, we really, really like all the songs on our albums so there’s none where we are like, ‘oh, that was sh*t!’ and that comes back to us releasing most of them as singles.

Q: Are there some that you like more than others?

CV: There are some that you like performing more than others just because of the energy.

Q: We love that you cannot be boxed into one particular genre. You are unafraid to be experimental. Music is a universal language and it speaks to listeners in a variety of different ways. We love that you have made your own because we hate genre boxes!

RB: We hate them too! When you are first starting out we are like, we are something meets something and you are like ‘I don’t want to be meets like anything!’ They’re like Joan Jett meets Eagles Of Death Metal and we are like ‘I suppose’, but it’s easy for people to digest something they can categorize, but we always, from the moment we started this f**king band didn’t want to be categorized and we wanted to do something new so we called ourselves “future rock” because it’s rock and roll from the future. It’s not current rock, but where rock is going.

CV: That’s what we think at least, but we made our own box! “Future Rock!”

Q: Your cover of “I’m Afraid Of Americans” is probably one of the best covers we’ve heard of that song. So, that was put together by Howard Stern for a David Bowie tribute?

RB: Yes! Honestly, we didn’t even know the track and we were on tour with Highly Suspect when Howard Stern got in contact and said they wanted a new band to be on this record and they wanted us to be on it and it was one of his favorites and then once we heard it, we were like ‘oh, my god, it’s f**king perfect’, but then we always get sh*t for it because imagine when we first started doing it people didn’t know it was a Bowie cover so when we were performing it, people were like “F**k You! Go back to your own country’, so ever since I have to do a preamble before the song, and I get because imagine if we had written that song and it would be quite bold that two English girls come over to live in America and sing “I’m afraid of Americans”, so I kind of get it, so I always preamble it with ‘You guys don’t seem too scary though .. I’m afraid of some Americans … one American in particular!’

bones rapper uk tour

Q: Are there any other covers you’d like to tackle?

RB: We have actually started doing another one!

CV: It’s The Beatles song “Helter Skelter”, but we’ve changed that one a lot as well.

RB: We have made it a lot more heavy for this crowd [Bones UK is currently touring with KORN and Breaking Benjamin] I change the set around a bit to make it a bit more heavy. We did it at NAMM the other day with Jesse Hughes from Eagles of Death Metal, he came up and did a verse of it and it was amazing.

Q: We see that you have a ton of festival dates planned for this spring. It looks like you will hitting the circuit pretty hard. Are you excited?

RB: It’s the first year we’ve done a ton of festivals. Festivals are a fantastic opportunity to hang out with a lot of your friends who are in other bands. It truly is like rock and roll summer camp.

CV: We have been asking to do more festivals, but wanted to wait until the album came out and now that it’s out, we are jumping on a bunch of them. We are thrilled to be playing with so many of our friends.

RB: We are going to be touring with Royal Blood just before that and they are some of our very best friends and then we segway into the festivals so it’s going to be sick!

Q: So that will basically take you straight into the fall.

RB: That will be all of May and then I believe we are looking into a headline thing, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet. We can’t wait! We are so pumped.

Q: Is there any tentative time frame for when new music will be released?

RB: We are working on that along with another couple of secret things, so that’s all coming up soon! We are very very busy, but we like being busy so it’s fantastic!

BONES UK Take ‘People Power’ to the Grammys – Interview

This BONES UK interview came at just the right time. It was the middle of January and Australia was burning, Trump was being impeached and throwing the United States into despair and the world watched fearfully as all-out war in the Middle East appeared looming. Surrounded by nothing but wretchedness, there was a very big strain on my heart. Then, I dialed the phone to interview BONES, the U.K.-born female industrial rock duo, and what I got on the other end was genuine and immediate enthusiasm.

They answered in unison, “Carmen and Rosie!”

Their bright spirits instantly turned my mood around. As it turned out, that wasn’t by accident. Vocalist Rosie Bones and guitarist Carmen Vandenberg always make it their mission to bring hope and happiness where there is none; it’s the driving force behind their music.

“Huge stuff is going on,” Bones says. “What we don’t do is let it drag us down. It’s fucking overwhelming, especially as an artist when you’re trying to make sense of what you’re doing. We need to do what we can. What we don’t do is just get depressed. We always try and work out solutions instead of just wallow in the problems.”

Perhaps that resoluteness and persistence is part of the reason they were able to snag a 2020 Grammy nomination for Best Rock Performance following the release of their self-titled debut album. That’s right. BONES were able to achieve something most artists don’t achieve in a lifetime right out of the gate.

“It is completely mental!” Bones exclaims. “The whole thing is completely insane. We kind of feel like this isn’t just about us. We’re representing new artists and our peers and we’re kind of doing this for everyone, so for us it’s such a victory for young, new rock fans. So we’re just proud to be doing this for all of us and everyone we know.”

Many other young artists in this situation would not be nearly as humble—or even selfless—but this duo insists upon it.

“We care for the voice of the young adults,” the vocalist continues, “and for people who need help feeling secure about themselves. We write songs like “Beautiful Is Boring” because we come from a place where we’ve felt insecure. So as much as we can use our music to empower people and make people feel like they’re not alone and they can come be part of our gang, and we can be their strength when sometimes they don’t have it, that’s what we love.”

BONES UK, "Beautiful Is Boring"

“Being able to inspire people helps [our] confidence,” Vandenberg adds. “[It’s] the ability of our words to be able to change things [and] be part of more things that we believe in.”

“You can be confident and still be vulnerable,” Bones assures. “You can be feminine but still be incredibly tough. As much as we can, we’re trying to teach ourselves to be proud of those things.”

This dichotomy of seemingly opposing ideals is at the very core of their identity, both as people and as artists. While the act’s music videos may be shot in black and white, their understanding of the world around them is not so. Bones and Vandenberg see issues like femininity and masculinity, for example, in a very nuanced way.

“I don’t think it’s just women,” Bones remarks on the subject of confidence. “I think lots of boys suffer from insecurity as well. We don’t speak to just girls. It’s very important to talk to the boys because they often don’t have the emotional support to be vulnerable. People need to stop comparing themselves to other people; that aspiration to be someone you’re not, and someone you’re never going to be. We can kind of teach everyone to be fucking proud of who [they] are, and how important [they] are…[their] scars, birthmarks—how amazing they are and how important it is to celebrate those imperfections instead of cover them up.”

Lyrically, BONES are not verbose. Musically, they put forward bare chords without much flourish, save for noisy reverb and simple electronic beats. Their song “Pretty Waste,” which earned them the Grammy nomination, repeats the same lyric, “What a waste of a pretty face” again and again. And this is precisely what makes their message of confidence so straightforward, unrelenting and unchallenged. Bold visuals, bold statements, bold nakedness—this is their take on rock ’n’ roll.

BONES UK, "Pretty Waste"

“What does the BONES world look like?” Bones asks. “That high contrast, bad-boy black and white filter over it—you’re in the BONES world. We love that grittiness. It feels seedy. It feels rock ’n’ roll.”

The vocalist also states that there were five words they came up with to describe their act before executing their vision: sex, motorbikes, snakes, black leather and whiskey. (Although, according to Vandenberg, the last word has since been altered: “We drink tequila now because it makes us happy, and we don’t fight as much.”) They are raw, they are assertive and their aim is to share those qualities with everyone.

“The best thing that we hear from people after we come off the stage is that they feel empowered by our show,” Bones remarks. “Performing live is our favorite thing in the entire universe. We absolutely love it; [being] able to throw that [energy] on to people and channel it.”

And they don’t just want their fans to feel empowered, they want their fans to use that sense of empowerment to make real change. They call it “people power.”

“Mainstream politics seems like it’s just insane and you can’t even deal with it anymore,” Bones admits, “but there’s so many local government things that you can be involved with. We just had the thing recently in England with the election [of Prime Minister Boris Johnson.] But look at your local people that you can elect. How can you help with your community? The people on your street, in your area? Your local school, your own homeless crisis? People get overwhelmed by the big things when sometimes, the small things make more of a difference.”

BONES UK return with new single, ‘Milk’

Home » BONES UK return with new single, ‘Milk’

Grammy nominated rock duo  BONES UK  have released their new single, ‘Milk.’ It’s an anthemic celebration of living without self denial as well as a love letter to their home land of Camden Town — the place where  Rosie Bones  and  Carmen Vandenberg  first met and started making music together. Following up from last single ‘Cheap Love’, ‘Milk’ is a journey of self-reflection inspired by a return to their roots.

Watch the video  HERE .

“Over the past few years I made the decision to do everything I can to feel as free as possible, and ‘Milk’ encapsulates that freedom,”  says Rosie.  “It’s about the aftermath of hard times, the flower growing out of the dirt, the feeling of joy in the face of uncertainty and pain.”

The track features Rosie’s instantly-recognisable voice in a hip hop inspired vocal flow as Carmen’s guitar struts alongside it, gathering pace along the way before unleashing her trademark soulful leads. The song is accompanied by a gritty video, shot by longtime collaborator Jason Lee Denton and filmed down the road from Rosie’s childhood home, opposite the hospital she was born in.

“The blood of the beginnings of this band is in this video,”  explains Rosie.  “The pubs we had pees in during the shoot were filled with people Carmen and I both knew. We walked next to Hampstead Heath where we sat on a rug and wrote ‘Beautiful Is Boring’. Music can take you many magical places and to thousands of cities, but it’s good sometimes to go home and remember why you started, who you are, and what’s important.”

Made up of vocalist  Rosie Bones  and guitarist  Carmen Vandenberg ,  BONES UK  confront everything from the beauty industrial-complex to toxic masculinity and music-scene sexism; embedding each track with choruses primed for passionate shouting-along.

BONES UK  have supported rock luminaries including  Tom Morello ,  KoRn ,  Stone Temple Pilots ,  The Eagles Of Death Metal ,  Bush  and  Band Of Skull s — not to mention spells with  Highly Suspect ,  The Struts ,  Grandson ,  The Glorious Sons  and many others. GRAMMY-nominated for Best Rock Performance,  BONES UK  demonstrate a commitment to using their art to speak their minds; shedding light on the disconnect between the status quo and the far more glorious world inside their heads.

In between such epic tours and award nominations, the band have amassed further notoriety for their parties and various curated events hosted across multiple global cities, each one a celebration of inclusivity and letting one’s inner ‘Filthy-Freak’ fly! From all this,  BONES UK  might seem like a band who are already quite far along with their mission, but spend any time in their presence and it’s easy to see that THEY are only just getting started…

Bones Gives a Rare Interview About Love, Identity, and Fatherhood

By gabe allanoff, photographed by b.g_i, july 13, 2021.

facebook share

If Bones had not arrived on the scene more than a decade ago, modern hip-hop might look a lot different than it does today. Despite his seminal role in shaping the emo-rap culture that now dominates the genre, the Michigan-born artist remains nonplussed by mainstream industry accolades: “They say I mean a lot to rap,” he mutters in the music video for “WeatherMan” while smoking a Backwood in front of a 1990s Weather Channel forecast, “But that don’t mean a thing to me.”

What means the most to Bones is making music—lots of it. The rapper was just a 16-year-old growing up in small town Michigan when he released his first mixtape in 2010, an experience which prompted him to drop out and move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the industry. Since then, Bones has released 79 albums and 122 music videos, has completed four national tours—usually accompanied by his supergroup SESHOLLOWATERBOYZ—and maintains three long-term musical side projects, all without the support of a record label. Still, 11 years into his career, Bones manages to pull in upwards of three million monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

Recently, Bones released InLovingMemory, a new record that masterfully blends early 2000s alt-rock with contemporary trap. Despite his prolific talents and cult following, Bones remains modest about the creative vision and industry acumen that earned him his devoted fanbase. “I’m just flying by the seat of my pants,” he insists, “and life is fucking sweet.” Below, we sat down with the rapper, whose real name is Elmo O’Connor in his parents’ backyard to discuss everything from parenthood to the state of hip hop and everything in between.

ALLANOFF: Your new album, InLovingMemory, recently dropped. How does it feel?

O’CONNOR: Insane. I’ve never sat on music for this long. There are some songs on there that I made last year, and I’ve never done that. It’s why I feel manic lately—there are so many fucking files on my computer, and I never name them. When I’m trying to put a tape together, I have to sift through 80 files full of gibberish and keyboard slams.

ALLANOFF: How do you whittle 80 songs down to an album?

O’CONNOR: Well, sometimes I feel like nothing I can do could even change with how people view my music. They’ll never be like, “Oh, that’s not him,” because with my shit, I don’t  ever let myself be out of character. I hold Bones, as a character, in such high regard because it takes care of me and my whole family.

ALLANOFF: Hearing you say “Bones as a character” is wild because it’s always felt like Bones is just you. How did you create the Bones character?

O’CONNOR: When I went by Th@ Kid, I was not trying to be dark, I was just kicking raps about smoking or whatever. And then I hit a point where I was like, “Okay, I’m 18 now. I can’t be Th@ Kid any more. What’s the name change? Is it going to be Th@ Guy? What’s it going to be?” And I’ve always looked at music like wrestling, and The Undertaker always looks like the funnest thing to be. So, I was with my brother Justin, from Michigan, and we were like, “We should go dark.” So we decided to channel the fact that I’m a skinny white guy with fucked up teeth and long hair, and make this backwoods character who you’d see in an alleyway, or behind a gas station at three in the morning—a seedy dude. So that was the core idea, just to scare you with this boogey man character mixed with that ’90s scumbag realism.

ALLANOFF: You mentioned The Undertaker, but why else did you decide to go dark?

O’CONNOR: I had kind of a disdain for what I was doing. I had been so obsessed with Wiz [Khalifa], and Curren$y, and Mac [Miller], and that kind of happy, smoking weed music, then I got sick of that. So, I fell back into old shit that we would listen to, like The Dayton Family, Three 6 [Mafia], and old Project [Pat]. I was like, “Dude, nobody does dark , dark now. “This was around the time A$AP [Rocky] put out that “I love bad bitches that’s my fucking problem” song. Everything was so light, and then [SpaceGhost] Purpp came out with music, and Eddy [Baker], Chris [Travis], and [Ethel (now Xavier)] Wulf. I was like, “Yes! It’s not just me that wants it to go in this direction.” And that’s how we all found each other. We all liked the same shit when the scene was so small. It’s cool to see how big it is now. I talk too much shit, because I only have a little bit of sleep in me. I just gotta try to stay awake for little man’s bath time. Little man takes his bath at 7:00.

ALLANOFF: How old is Howl now?

O’CONNOR: He’s going to be two in August, which is fucked. It just doesn’t even make sense.

ALLANOFF: What’s your routine been like?

O’CONNOR: I’ll wake up at 6:45 or 7:00 with Howl. Sam [Howl’s mother] makes him breakfast. I sit with him while he eats, and then I go straight downstairs where the mic and everything is. That’s why I love Sam so much, because I don’t know a lot of people who can put up with that shit.

ALLANOFF: What shit?

O’CONNOR: Just me, this weird situation. I’m not like, “Okay, honey. I’m going to the studio.” I’m just going downstairs. I don’t know, man. I don’t want anybody to be annoyed or hurt because I’m so addicted to this thing. It’s like all I can do, i t keeps me level, even though sometimes I still fucking bug out.

bones rapper uk tour

ALLANOFF: So you need to be making music.

O’CONNOR: I need it, dude, and I think everybody needs it. I think the biggest fucking problem is that people don’t give creativity the credit it deserves. It’s not just about having a passion or something. Everybody that’s ever gotten murdered probably could have been spared. Before Eric and Dylan [the  Columbine High School shooters] shot up that whole school, you think they were doing some yoga, or working out, getting their brain going? No, absolutely not. Could have saved everybody.

ALLANOFF: It’s cool that the thing that keeps you grounded has also kept your fans grounded for years.

O’CONNOR: That’s something that I don’t think will ever make sense to me. I don’t want it to, and I don’t think it should. Like, realistically, I’m doing this interview because my mom and dad said it was cool. I don’t do much press, I don’t give a fuck to hear myself talk. The people that you’re talking about, listeners who like my music, they like me way more than I like myself. I’m not even trying to sound like fucking, “Oh, I hate myself.” I just hate interviews.

ALLANOFF: Well, you’ve inspired so many people, and even though tons of musicians mimic you, nobody’s done what you continue to do.

O’CONNOR: Dude, when you say that, I feel like I’m picking up my dog’s shit, and you’re like, “Dude, nobody’s doing that right now.” I think it’s almost embarrassing because of how funny this is to me.

ALLANOFF: Funny how?

O’CONNOR: This whole thing is hilarious. You’re sitting here talking to me because I make fucking music? It all doesn’t really connect. But it’s all good, I’m flying by the seat of my pants, and life is fucking sweet.

ALLANOFF: How did surrenderdorothy [one of Bones’ long-term side projects] start?

O’CONNOR: We just started with the name. We were watching an old episode of  Cribs and Dave Navarro was on it. I think he was in Jane’s Addiction or something—I don’t know, but he looks insane. He looks like Criss Angel, like with a dyed little soul patch, leather, and bracelets. He looks fucking nuts. He was showing off his tattoos, and he had “Surrender Dorothy” on his fucking leg. We were like, “That’s the worst tattoo ever. We’ll do a band based off that.”

ALLANOFF: That’s insane.

O’CONNOR: Obviously the tattoo was about the Wizard of Oz , but it’s a funny name for us because it’s not about The Wizard of Oz . It’s about that dickhead having a bad tattoo.

ALLANOFF: How do you feel when other people take something you developed, market it as their own idea, and take it mainstream?

O’CONNOR: Obviously, there’s that inevitable, very selfish reaction that’s like, “Oh, you blew up the spot.” You know what I mean? Like, “This is where we were coming to smoke, and you just told the teachers” type shit.

bones rapper uk tour

ALLANOFF: Do you see yourself in Howl?

O’CONNOR: Hell yeah, man. That’s why it’s so hard for me to even think about how other people view their children, because how I see him, I’m literally just fucking looking at somebody who me and Sam made, my favorite person ever. Me and her made a person, and it’s just fucked. I don’t know how to talk about it. I don’t even want to talk about it. I feel like I’ll get really emotional.

ALLANOFF: We don’t have to talk about it then.

O’CONNOR: I just love him so much. Because with him, it’s all good things. It’s just pure.

ALLANOFF: Have you always wanted to be a dad?

O’CONNOR: I don’t think I’ve ever not wanted to. I think taking a stance and saying, “I’m having kids or I’m not having them,” is weird.  I don’t think life is like that. I truly don’t think you can plan anything, even if you try. It’s like trying to iron the fucking water. You can’t do it. Even if you think you’re setting up your day, like at 8:00 I do this, at 9:00 I do that, you can get smoked by a car. You stub your toe and go to the bathroom for eight minutes to do a thing, and then your whole schedule’s fucked up. You don’t actually have control over anything.

ALLANOFF: What kind of music are you raising Howl on?

O’CONNOR: All sorts. Obviously, I’m not a big fan of showing him a bunch of cuss words and shit, but I’m showing him all the music I like, all the rap stuff, and he’s digging it. He loves all the old jazz stuff we put on at breakfast time and bath time. He dances and he loves it. He was just dancing to a Britney Spears song and a Hanson song in the car, so I don’t really think there’s too much music he doesn’t like right now.

ALLANOFF: I know you’re from Howell, Michigan, but how did you decide on the name?

O’CONNOR: It felt right. We love the movie, Howl’s Moving Castle , and I’m from a place called Howell. I don’t know, it just felt right.

A LLANOFF: How have you felt about your name over the course of your life?

O’CONNOR: I think Elmo fits, man. I don’t think I could have been a Zack or Tyler. I’m glad that I got a weird name. I didn’t like it when I was in school. I remember hiding in the bathroom for five days straight during lunch because I didn’t want to face these people. It’s funny when you get older, and you think about things that bothered you. Like, I should have just walked into the lunchroom. It was fucking popcorn day. Instead, I was fuckin’ shook in my boots.

ALLANOFF: That story reminds me of a line you have in ConnectionLost , where you say, “Put my parents through some shit, now I gotta make it up.”

O’CONNOR: Dude, I wish I knew my lyrics like that. Obviously I do if I hear them, but I guess it would be way worse if I was like, ” Verse three on ConnectionLost from fucking track…” Wait, what were you saying?

ALLANOFF: What’s the worst thing you’ve put your parents through?

O’CONNOR: It’s not like I killed anybody or anything. I just remember doing all those stupid, rich, bratty things, because that’s really how it is. I remember my mom pulling up at my buddy’s house, and we were all fucked up, and we’d managed to get some AK-47. We were so excited. “It’s orange. Oh, my god! It’s got hairs on it, just like in the rap videos!” We smoked it on the side of the house out of a little one-hitter. I remember my mom calling me two seconds after I smoked, and I was like, “Oh, fuck you, mom. Let me hang out.” My parents, they put a roof over my head. I was always fed. We never had a Christmas that was shitty. We always had the craziest stockings. We lived in the best house out of all my friends. I had friends in fucking trailers and all that bullshit. My dad and my mom worked their asses off.

ALLANOFF: Do you think it’s better to have a carefree and sheltered childhood but end up unequipped for life, or have a fucked-up childhood but be prepared for how difficult and ugly life is?

O’CONNOR: I think if anybody thinks that they know what’s best for a child, they’re wrong. We haven’t figured it out. I mean, we’re pretty fucking high on the infant mortality rate list. It’s like, we don’t give a shit about our babies. We don’t know how to raise kids. We don’t know what’s good for kids because all we care about is having them grow up, spend their money, give them cancer through our unhealthy food, make them pay fucking hospital bills. They’re farming us. So, you can’t really do too much for a kid but love them. That’s what my dad says, “Patience and love.” Nothing more and nothing less.

Critical Praise:

“The Michigan-born rapper was one of the earliest and most influential artists to rise through the SoundCloud ranks in the early 2010s thanks to a truly unique aesthetic, an aura of mystery and a sound that would go on to be mimicked by his genre for years to come.” – HYPEBEAST

‘Already one of the most influential artists in rap and the SoundCloud underground, Bones shows no signs of slowing down.” – HYPEBEAST

“O’Connor’s short tracks, creepy videos, and one-word tweets rack up millions of social media interactions from a cult following that helped him sell out shows in 25 cities on a recent tour. The hip-hop elite is taking notice.” – The FADER

“Elmo Kennedy O’Connor was in pre-school when he became obsessed with the Southern artists of No Limit and Cash Money. Later in life, he would adopt the rap moniker Bones and amass a significant cult following. His gothic lyrical style, allergy to songs longer than two and a half minutes, and lo-fi visual aesthetic have convinced a quarter million people to subscribe to the SoundCloud page of his rap collective, TeamSESH.” – HotNewHipHop

The Announcement:

Kindred spirits and key figures in the hip-hop underground,  BONES ,  Xavier Wulf , and  Eddy Baker  command legions of loyal fans who’d follow them wherever they go. Teaming up for a cross-country sojourn to celebrate their joint and solo accomplishments, the three underground kings announce the  “ BONES x Xavier Wulf x Eddy Baker: InLovingMemory Tour ,” presented by  Live Nation  and  Rolling Loud , kicking off this May. The upcoming tour is the  first by BONES in four years , and the first-ever co-headlining tour by these three artists.

Named after a 2021 album by BONES, the “InLovingMemory Tour” tour begins on May 20th at Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, making stops across the U.S. in Chicago, Atlanta, Denver and more before wrapping up in Phoenix at The Van Buren on June 22nd.

Tickets will be available starting with presales from  Wednesday, April 5th  with the general onsale beginning  Friday, April 7th  at  10 AM local time  at XX.com.

The tour announcement and the “AirplaneMode” video continues a big year for BONES. The TeamSESH CEO recently shared  TheWitch&TheWizard , a haunting album created with longtime TeamSESH producer  Greaf , a close collaborator of BONES who co-helmed his  surrenderdorothy  and  OREGONTRAIL  side projects. Most recently, BONES shared the long-awaited music video for his viral hit “ AirplaneMode .” In March, BONES and Eddy Baker teamed up for  “YellowStone ,” the first single from  Jones Peak , their upcoming collaborative album. The first album by BONES and Eddy Baker as a duo since 2019’s cult favorite  SparrowsCreek ,  Jones Peak  arrives on  April 14  via  TeamSESH / EMPIRE .

BONES, Xavier Wulf, and Eddy Baker have been doing their thing away from the limelight for over a decade, creating their own strain of hip-hop in the dark corners of the internet. All three artists have cultivated massive fanbases who respect their consistency, and consistent quality, which they deliver over their many projects. The three artists consciously avoid the hip-hop mainstream, but they’re still doing numbers: BONES recently earned his first-ever  GOLD  certification from the RIAA for his 2014 hit  “ HDMI ,” while Hollow Squad CEO Xavier Wulf went GOLD with his 2014  Blood Shore Season 2  cut  “Psycho Pass .” BONES, Wulf, and Baker recently treated fans to a preview of the upcoming tour, joining forces on the main stage during  Rolling Loud California 2023 .

Stay tuned for BONES and Baker’s  Jones Peak  and for many more announcements from the trio in the near future.

The Background:

BONES has proven to be one of the most enduring, influential, and creative hip-hop artists to emerge in the early 2010s. The TeamSESH founder has recorded dozens of albums, racking up hundreds of millions of streams and feeding a fanbase that eagerly awaits his every move. Despite remaining fiercely independent and true to his underground roots, his music has permeated the mainstream–in 2015, A$AP Rocky sampled BONES’ song “Dirt” for “Canal St.” (124 million streams), and in recent years, BONES has performed in prime slots at festivals such as Rolling Loud as a member of Seshollowaterboyz (along with Xavier Wülf, Chris Travis, and Eddy Baker).

Drake and J. Cole's beef with Kendrick Lamar explained as '7 Minute Drill' rapper apologizes

  • J. Cole apologized to Kendrick Lamar on Sunday over his diss track, "7 Minute Drill."
  • It came after Lamar dissed J. Cole and Drake on Future and Metro Boomin's song "Like That."
  • It all ties into a long-running beef between Lamar and Drake.

Insider Today

J. Cole has apologized as the beef between himself, Kendrick Lamar , and Drake — who hip-hop is now calling the "Big 3" — rages on.

Late last month, Kendrick Lamar dissed Drake and Cole on Future and Metro Boomin's track "Like That" from their latest collaborative album, "We Don't Trust You." In his verse, Lamar referenced Drake's latest album, "For All the Dogs," specifically the track "First Person Shooter," which features Cole. (It's a song that Lamar was rumored to be featured on too, but apparently never materialized.)

In "First Person Shooter," Cole and Drake brag about being the "Big 3" rappers in hip-hop alongside Lamar. But Lamar distances himself from the other two in "Like That."

"Motherfuck the big three, n****, it's just big me," Lamar rapped.

The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart last week amid the drama.

Cole fired back on Friday with the song "7 Minute Drill" from his 12-track EP "Might Delete Later," which features Gucci Mane, Ari Lennox, and others. In the song, Cole mocks Lamar's waning popularity with his latest album, " Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers ," and his "second shit," which could refer to Lamar's second album, "Good Kid, M.A.A.D City," but fans believe is about "To Pimp A Butterfly," as most people don't count 2011's "Section.80" as his first.

Two days after the song was released, Cole apologized to Lamar during his performance at the Dreamville Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina. It came after hip-hop's loudest voices, namely Joe Budden, expected Cole to continue the beef onstage. Instead, he shocked the hip-hop world and apologized.

"I just want to come up here and publicly be like, bruh, that was the lamest, goofiest shit," Cole said. "And I pray that y'all are like, forgive a n**** for the misstep and I can get back to my true path. Because I ain't gonna lie to y'all. The past two days felt terrible."

Here's what to know about the feud between Drake , Cole, and Lamar.

Drake and Lamar have been throwing digs at each other since 2013.

Lamar and Drake started out as friends, with Lamar opening for Drake's "Club Paradise" tour in 2012. The pair's feud began when Lamar rapped that he was better than all the rising rap stars, including Drake and Cole, when he featured on Big Sean's 2013 song "Control."

"And that goes for Jermaine Cole, Big K.R.I.T., Wale, Pusha T, Meek Millz, A$AP Rocky, Drake, Big Sean, Jay Electron', Tyler, Mac Miller / I got love for you all, but I'm tryna murder you n*****," he rapped.

Drake appeared to respond on the track "The Language" from his 2013 album, " Nothing Was the Same ," rapping: "I don't know why they been lyin' but your shit is not that inspirin'/ Bank account statement just look like I'm ready for early retirement / Fuck any n**** that's talking that shit just to get a reaction."

The two rappers last featured on the same song in 2013 and, since then, have made small digs at each other in their tracks and in interviews.

In 2015, many fans believe that Lamar accused Drake of using a ghostwriter, pointing to Lamar's 2015 track "King Kunta," where he raps, "I can dig rappin', but a rapper with a ghostwriter? / What the fuck happened?"

Lamar hasn't confirmed if the "King Kunta" lyric is about Drake.

Related stories

Later that year, Meek Mill also accused Drake of using a ghostwriter in a since-deleted post on X, which Drake denied in a 2019 interview with Rap Radar .

The pair have also taken different paths artistically, with Lamar earning critical acclaim, including winning a Pulitzer prize for "Damn" in 2018 and 17 Grammys . Drake is more commercially successful, with 15 songs with over a billion streams on Spotify compared to Kendrick's five.

Cole entered the beef after appearing on "For All The Dogs."

Drake's 2023 track " First Person Shooter ," featuring Cole, is all about the two being the greatest rappers ever. Cole, who is friends with Lamar, references him in the song

"Love when they argue the hardest MC / Is it K-Dot? Is it Aubrey? Or me?" Cole raps, referring to Lamar's nickname, "K-Dot," and Drake's birth name Aubrey. "We the big three like we started a league, but right now, I feel like Muhammad Ali."

Drake ends the song by comparing his success to that of the late Michael Jackson , who is the sixth best-selling artist of all time. In October 2023, Drake scored his 13th Billboard Hot 100 No.1, tying with Jackson.

Lamar's verse in "Like That" alludes to these lyrics, the song title, "First Person Shooter," and Drake's 2023 album title, " For All the Dogs ."

"Fuck sneak dissin', first-person shooter, I hope they came with three switches," Lamar raps.

"N****, Prince outlived Mike Jack'," Lamar raps later, referencing a 2017 song, "Mask Off (Remix)," where he compares himself to Prince. Prince and Jackson also had a long-standing beef when they were alive.

Lamar ends the verse referencing Drake's latest album: "'Fore all your dogs gettin' buried /That's a K with all these nines, he gon' see Pet Sematary (Yeah)."

A week after the song dropped last month, Drake appeared to respond to Lamar during a concert in Florida as part of his "It's All A Blur Tour: Big As In What?" with Cole.

Drake officially addresses Kendrick Lamar on stage “I got my head held high, my back straight, I’m ten f**king toes down… and I know no matter what there’s not another n**ga that could ever f*ck with me on this Earth” pic.twitter.com/4xJZ1kX8uS — Grand/THE WIZRD🔮⁶𓅓 (@grandwizardcn) March 25, 2024

"A lot of people ask me how I'm feeling. I'mma let you know I'm feeling," Drake said in a video shared on X. "I got my fucking head up high, my back straight, I'm 10 fucking toes down in Florida and anywhere else I go. And I know that no matter what, it's not a n**** on this earth that could ever fuck with me in my life!"

Cole fired back at Lamar and then apologized two days later.

Cole did not comment publicly on Lamar's "Like That" verse until last week when he released "Might Delete Later."

The first verse of the final track, "7 Minute Drill," appears to be a direct response to Lamar, who Cole implies is losing popularity. Rolling Stone's Andre Gee wrote that the title refers to a military drill where officers have to explain how to respond to an enemy attack.

"He still doin' shows, but fell off like the Simpsons / Your first shit was classic, your last shit was tragic / Your second shit put n***** to sleep, but they gassed it / Your third shit was massive and that was your prime / I was trailin' right behind and I just now hit mine," Cole raps.

Fans think Cole's bar about Lamar's second album references the critically-acclaimed " To Pimp a Butterfly ," which some music fans have described as boring. Rolling Stone's Gee and Pitchfork's Alphonse Pierre panned Cole's track for not being aggressive enough.

"He doesn't have the heart for the lying, disrespect, and animosity it requires to make an effective diss track," Pierre wrote.

Two days later, Cole walked back the comments at his Dreamville Festival, saying the only reason he responded was because he felt pressured by his fans and his friends to respond.

"I was conflicted because, one I know my heart and I know how I feel about my peers, these two n***** that I just been blessed to even stand beside in this game, let alone chase they greatness," Cole said in a video shared on X. "So I felt conflicted 'cause I'm like, bruh I don't even feel no way. But the world wanna see blood."

J.Cole speaks on his response to Kendrick and says it hasn’t felt good or right with his spirit, calling his own response “corny” and telling Kendrick to return his best shot if he feels a way pic.twitter.com/jan2jctfk9 — Glock Topickz (@Glock_Topickz) April 8, 2024

Cole said his diss verse, and the discourse surrounding it, didn't "sit right with my spirit," adding that he hoped Lamar, who he describes as "one of the greatest motherfucker's to ever touch a fuckin' microphone," wasn't hurt by his words.

"If he did, my n****, I got my chin out. Take your best shot, I'ma take that shit on the chin boy, do what you do. All good. It's love," he said.

Representatives for Lamar, Cole, and Drake did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
