Boston Conservatory Named a Top School for Dance, Music, and Theater in 2023

The school concludes the calendar year with its annual compilation of accolades, this year from esteemed publishers  Playbill ,  DanceUS, and more.

Year after year, Boston Conservatory at Berklee earns recognition on "best of" lists in respected trade publications and guides to higher education. In 2023, the Conservatory continued to fare well in the rankings, receiving accolades from the likes of  Playbill ,  Backstage Magazine , DanceUS.org, and BestSchools.org.

When evaluating schools for these lists, publications take into account Boston Conservatory's wide range of degree offerings, the many performance opportunities afforded our students, the credentials and demonstrated commitment of our faculty, and the proven success of alums (which in 2023 included  two Tony Award winners and a  Latin Grammy nominee ).

One of the Best College Dance Programs

For the fourth consecutive year, Boston Conservatory was named a top dance school by DanceUS.org, earning recognition for "what is widely considered the best contemporary dance program in the U.S." DanceUS.org is a trusted resource in the dance world, providing news and educational resources to dancers, as well as editorials on topics ranging from the history of dance to the latest trends in every style. Emphasizing the Dance Division's innovative curriculum, DanceUS.org says, "the Conservatory provides an environment for young dancers to grow into cutting-edge artists."

The longstanding industry trade magazine Backstage ranked Boston Conservatory third on its list of  10 College Dance Programs You Should Know . In its review,  Backstage points to the Conservatory's unique partnerships with the Royal Academy of Dance, which offers a ballet teaching qualification, and with the Radio City Rockettes, which provides precision dance training at an unparalleled professional level.

A Top School for Music

For the second consecutive year, BestSchools.org ranked Boston Conservatory at Berklee and Berklee College of Music among their  top 10 schools for musicians . The Conservatory was noted as having an above-average range of instrumental instruction, including collaborative piano, harp, marimba, and vocal pedagogy. BestSchools evaluated their rankings on the basis of educational excellence, strength of faculty, reputation, and record of accomplishment by alums.

This past year also saw many Music Division alums reaching new career heights: Kristhyan Benitez (G.P.D. '10, A.D. '15, piano) earned his second Latin Grammy nomination in the Best Classical Album category; and Laura Bibbs (B.M. '19, trumpet) played for sold-out crowds all over Europe while on tour with Harry Styles. Current Conservatory students also made their mark in 2023, with Chenglin Yang (M.M. '24, clarinet) earning a full-time position with the Wuxi Symphony Orchestra in Jiangsu Province, China, and Juliette Ojeda wowing judges on NBC's  The Voice .

Top 10 Most-Represented Colleges on Broadway

Boston Conservatory ranked seventh on  Playbill 's list of the  "Big 10" most represented colleges on Broadway during the 2022–2023 performance season. The success of alums in recent productions like  Wicked ,  Funny Girl , and  1776 has earned the Conservatory a spot on this coveted list for the fifth time in the last seven years.

Several alums performed in Tony-nominated productions this past season: Marchánt Davis (B.F.A. '13, musical theater) led the cast of  Ain’t No Mo’ ; Andrew Durand (B.F.A. '08, musical theater) played Beau in  Shucked ; and Allison Blackwell (M.M. '04, musical theater) and Aaron Patterson (B.F.A. '21, musical theater) performed in the company for  New York, New York .

Two alums—Ben Simpson (B.F.A. ’11, musical theater) and Mike Mosallam (M.M. ’06, musical theater)—took home Tony Awards as producers of  Parade , which won Best Revival of a Musical.

Q-Tip, famously known for cofounding A Tribe Called Quest, has solidified his position as one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history. His innovative fusion of rap, jazz, and various other styles, paired with socially conscious lyrics, has earned him widespread acclaim.

A Tribe Called Quest released their sixth and final album,  We Got It from Here...Thank You 4 Your Service , in November 2016, receiving glowing reviews from critics and fans alike. Q-Tip's unorthodox approach to hip-hop and his appreciation for diverse genres have propelled him to success as both a solo artist and producer. Collaborating with an array of celebrated musicians including the Beastie Boys, Busta Rhymes, J Dilla, Janet Jackson, Queen Latifah, Pharrell Williams, Mark Ronson, and Mary J. Blige, he has continually pushed the boundaries of artistic expression. His recent collaborations include Solange, Kendrick Lamar, Arcade Fire, and the Chemical Brothers.

His solo albums, including  Amplified , the Grammy-nominated  The Renaissance , and  Kamaal the Abstract , have garnered critical acclaim, showcasing his versatility and innovation. Q-Tip is currently scheduled to release another solo album in late 2024.

Beyond music, Q-Tip's artistic exploration extends into acting, film production, advocacy, education, and ambassadorship of hip-hop culture. He brings his industry expertise to the Kennedy Center as an artistic director, curating a full season of hip-hop programming across disciplines, transforming the performing arts center into a beacon of hip-hop culture and history for years to come. Through his multifaceted contributions, Q-Tip continues to shape the landscape of contemporary music and cultural discourse.

Gilberto Santa Rosa

Gilberto Santa Rosa’s musical elegance and style has made him one of the most prominent figures in popular music. His countless accolades in the recording industry have reaffirmed his validity through the years, among them the 2002 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers’ Latin Heritage Award, five Latin Grammys, and the 2021 Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He has made record sales history as an artist, including a multitude of gold, platinum, and multiplatinum album certifications, and is the Guinness World Record holder for the most number-one hits on  Billboard’s Tropical Albums chart, making him one of the most successful Latin music vocalists in the world.

Nicknamed "El Caballero de la Salsa" (the Gentleman of Salsa), Santa Rosa began singing at the age of 6. Over a storied career spanning over 40 years that has produced more than 25 albums, the Puerto Rican bandleader has had many firsts, including being the first tropical salsa singer to perform at Carnegie Hall.

Santa Rosa was awarded the Lifetime Culture Achievement Award in September 2012 by the South-South News, an agency ascribed to the United Nations. This important acknowledgment is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to cultural development. Santa Rosa was also the first musician to be honored among heads of state and politicians who have previously received this award.

In 2013, Santa Rosa debuted on Broadway, where he was an invited guest in the musical revival of  Forever Tango at the Walter Kerr Theater. Santa Rosa has also participated as a coach on the reality show  La Voz Colombia , a singing competition where his vast musical knowledge was on display. In 2015, he received the first Premio Estrella from Día Nacional de la Zalsa. In 2017, an HBO Latino performance of  40... y Contando (En Vivo Desde Puerto Rico) honored his 40-year anniversary in the music industry.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Santa Rosa was one of the first artists to perform live during the economic recovery of the entertainment industry in markets such as Puerto Rico. He continues to tour widely in promotion of his  Auténtico tour, performing in iconic venues such as the Teatro Nacional Eduardo Brito in the Dominican Republic, the Movistar Arenas in Chile and Colombia, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center, the Kia Center in Orlando, Radio City Music Hall in New York, and various locations in Europe.

Berklee Valencia will present an honorary Doctor of Music degree to Senegalese singer, songwriter, composer, actor, businessman, and politician Youssou N’Dour at its 2024  commencement ceremony on Monday, July 8, at 6:00 p.m. CET at the Auditori del Palau de les Arts.

N’Dour is one of the most celebrated African musicians in history. He will be recognized for helping to define the music of the late 20th and early 21st centuries and for bringing the music and traditions of Senegal to an international audience. Through his music, philanthropy, and political activism, he has influenced generations of musicians.

In the last five years, the Valencia campus has awarded honorary doctorates to Imogen Heap, Lila Downs, Gilberto Gil, Alberto Iglesias, and Yvette Noel-Schure.

At the ceremony, N’Dour will have the opportunity to address the graduating class of 2024. Commencement festivities will begin on Saturday, July 6, at 10:30 a.m. with La Fira de Berklee, a celebratory event featuring the talent of the Berklee Valencia students at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències.

Youssou N’Dour is a legendary African musician renowned for his fusion of traditional Senegalese mbalax with diverse global influences, from Cuban rumba to hip-hop, jazz, and soul. His voice resonates with power and purpose, presenting the ancient griot traditions of Senegal in a fresh light while also carrying political and social messages across Africa to the wider world.

Born in Dakar, Senegal, in 1959, N’Dour began singing at religious ceremonies and quickly gained prominence performing outside dance clubs in Dakar. At age 16, he joined the Star Band de Dakar, where he played a pivotal role in pioneering mbalax, a genre that combined Senegalese traditional forms with modern elements.

In 1977, N’Dour formed Étoile de Dakar, which later became Super Étoile de Dakar. Under his leadership, the group further Africanized and popularized mbalax, incorporating elements like the Senegalese sabar drums and distributing their rhythms between the keyboards and electric guitars. His lyrics increasingly addressed pressing political and social issues, emphasizing the importance of preserving African cultural identity in an interconnected world.

The band performed across Europe and North America, collaborating with artists such as Peter Gabriel and participating in the Human Rights Now! tour and other events.

N’Dour's solo career skyrocketed with the release of his 1994 album,  The Guide (Wommat) , leading to global recognition. He then focused on initiatives in Senegal, establishing a recording studio, a record label, a media organization that included a radio station and a newspaper, and a network of internet cafés. N’Dour continued to engage internationally, organizing the Great African Ball and releasing numerous acclaimed albums, including 2004’s  Egypt , which earned him a Grammy Award. In 2012, he served as Senegal’s minister for culture and tourism under President Macky Sall.

Throughout his career, N’Dour has not only captivated audiences with his mesmerizing voice and innovative music but also used his platform to advocate for social change. He joined the Fondation Chirac’s honor committee and founded Birima, a microfinance organization, in 2008. The following year, he released a song, “Wake Up,” under a Creative Commons license to help IntraHealth International bring open-source health applications to Africa. He is also a member of the Canadian charity Artists Against Racism and a supporter of the Campaign for the Establishment of a United Nations Parliamentary Assembly, an organization that advocates for democratic reformation of the United Nations.

In 2017, N’Dour was awarded the Praemium Imperiale for music by the Japan Art Association in recognition of his lifetime achievements. He has also been honored at the Danish Music Awards, Montreal’s International Jazz Festival, the Edison Awards, La Mar de Músicas, the MOBO Awards, and Sweden's Polar Music Prize.
