Convicted killer of college student speaks out following new developments in case

"20/20" examines the 2012 murder of Christian Aguilar.

In 2012, a group of Florida friends was rocked by a homicide that prosecutors said was sparked by obsession, passion, and a love rivalry.

Pedro Bravo has been serving a life sentence in a Florida prison after he was convicted of first-degree murder and six other counts in the death of his friend Christian Aguilar . Aguilar had been dating Bravo's former girlfriend Erika Friman, who was also a high school friend of the two men.

Prosecutors contended that Bravo, who was driven by jealous rage, poisoned and strangled Aguilar and buried his body in a remote area in September 2012.

But after nearly a decade of silence, Bravo is speaking out to "20/20" about the case after two recent developments that his attorneys claim to support their client's innocence.

"No, I did not kill Christian," Bravo told ABC News correspondent Victor Oquendo in an exclusive prison interview.

His interview will be part of a "20/20" episode airing March 1 at 9 p.m. ET and streaming on Hulu the next day that re-examines the case.

Bravo and Friman broke up right before they graduated high school in the spring of 2012. That summer, Friman began to attend Santa Fe Community College in Gainesville, Florida, and started dating Aguilar, who was a freshman at the University of Florida.

News of their relationship crushed Bravo who detailed his depression in a journal .

Eventually, he arranged to meet Aguilar on September 20, 2012, investigators said. That day, Aguilar went missing.

Bravo was arrested and charged eight days later with Aguilar's death, whose body was found weeks later in a shallow grave in a wooded area in Levy County, Florida.

Investigators collected security camera footage that showed Bravo and Aguilar together on the day he disappeared.

They also discovered several pieces of what they claimed was incriminating evidence against Bravo, including a Gatorade bottle they determined contained trace amounts of over-the-counter sleeping pills, tape found on Aguilar's body which matched tape on the windshield of Bravo's vehicle, and blood on a car floor mat that matched Aguilar's DNA. Prosecutors noted that Bravo bought a shovel a few days before Aguilar disappeared.

During his 2014 trial, Bravo testified that he and Aguilar did have an argument when they met but he denied killing his friend. He testified that he left him on the side of the road after they fought.

On Aug. 15, 2014, a jury convicted Bravo of his charges and he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. He was denied several appeals.

During his interview with "20/20," Bravo still maintained his innocence and argued that some of the evidence used against him by the prosecution was taken out of context.

When asked about internet searches about murder and kidnapping, Bravo told "20/20," "I was a kid that was into watching television shows, reading books, and the prosecution decided to highlight a handful of things," he said.

"They didn't have to do anything with Christian. To me, I was watching a show and made a search, I was looking up something," he added.

"I was in the middle of a maelstrom of everything that was going on. I didn't know what I was doing with my life. I didn't have any sense of direction, and it was just chaos," he said.

A new witness for the defense has emerged and according to an affidavit, she says that in 2012, she was in town trying to get tickets to a University of Florida football game and was supposed to meet someone in a parking lot.

While waiting, she says that she saw two young men fighting, who she claims were Bravo and Aguilar and that Bravo drove away leaving Aguilar behind. “20/20” reached out to this woman and she declined to comment.

Bravo said this recent development gave him hope.

"I couldn't believe it. and it felt vindicating to finally have someone that can corroborate what I said," he told "20/20."

Additionally, Michael Angelo, a convicted felon and Bravo’s former cellmate, who testified against him at trial has now recanted.

Angelo testified that Bravo told him where he hid the shovel used to bury Aguilar. Investigators recovered a shovel from the location told to them by Angelo.

Angelo told 20/20 he made up his testimony so authorities would help him with his case.

Angelo agreed to testify against Bravo as part of a plea deal in his own criminal cases.

Based on the witness affidavit and Angelo's recanted testimony, Bravo has filed a new motion for post-conviction relief, the first step of many in the hopes of getting a new trial. A decision is expected sometime this year.

State Attorney Brian Kramer, who prosecuted the case, told "20/20" that as of February he has not spoken to the woman claiming to be an eyewitness, explaining that until a judge rules on Bravo’s motion, the case is considered closed.

"In order for it to be something that would concern me it would have to somehow lead to the conclusion that it isn't possible that Pedro Bravo is the person who committed this murder and the evidence that he did is overwhelming," he said.

Investigators also told "20/20" that the location where the witness claimed to have seen the argument between the two men was miles away from the location where Bravo testified the fight happened.

Kramer told "20/20" that Angelo's recantation has little bearing on the outcome of the case.

"The problem from Michael Angelo and that recantation is that we proved what he said was true," he said.

Bravo said when it came to Aguilar's parents he couldn't "come close to understanding what it feels like to lose a son."

"There's no words that I could offer to try and make things better or make that pain go away, because maybe that pain shouldn't go away. That pain should stay there, because at least when you have that pain, that person's still in your life," he said.

Carlos Aguilar, the victim's father, however, told "20/20" that he has zero doubt that Bravo killed his son.

"I wish he can repent. I wish he can realize that he destroyed his family and my family, and being able to, once, say the truth and accept what he did," he said.

Defense attorneys ask for a new trial in the murder of Christian Aguilar

G AINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - New evidence is being brought forward in a high-profile, decade-old murder case in Gainesville. Defense attorneys are attempting to overturn Pedro Bravo’s conviction in the murder of Christian Aguilar.

Bravo’s defense lawyers have tried many appeals since he was sentenced to life in prison back in 2014. Their latest motion is based on a new witness coming forward and an old one recanting his testimony.

The case involves a love triangle between three friends from Miami who moved to Gainesville. Aguilar went missing in Sept. 2012 and his body was found a month later.

Investigators charged Bravo with the murder of Aguilar, who was dating his ex-girlfriend.

Now, a new witness in the case claims to have seen Bravo and Aguilar part ways before the alleged murder. A prior witness now claims his testimony was false.

“What I remember most about this case is the overwhelming volume of evidence that showed that Pedro Bravo committed this crime,” Brian Kramer, Eighth Judicial Circuit State Attorney. “There were at least 15 different things that were sufficient to prove his guilt.”

Kramer says he is doubtful the case will be retried despite the defense’s requests.

The case will be featured in a two-hour special on ABC’s 20/20 on Friday night. It airs on TV20 at 9 p.m.

“Christian’s parents, they think you are a monster, that you have no remorse. What do you say to them now?” asked ABC’s Victor Oquendo.

“I can’t come close to understanding what it feels like to lose a son. There’s no words that I could offer to make things better or make that pain go away,” said Bravo in an ABC exclusive jailhouse interview.

“In Montana, Wyoming. Colorado. I did a tour of out West,” Shep shared. “I ended up having a hell of a lot of fun... seeing some real estate, meeting some cool people. But the interest rates, the mortgage rates, it’s just. Crazy. It’s not the right time. Not now. But I do love out West. I do love Montana, and fishing and hunting and stuff.”

The murder case of Christian Aguilar is covered in Investigation Discovery’s ‘Signs Of A Psychopath: Diary of a Psychopath’ and Hulu’s ‘Death in the Dorms: Christian Aguilar.’ When college student Christian Aguilar disappeared out of nowhere, it became a cause for distress for his family and girlfriend. Upon delving deeper into the case, the police discovered that the 18-year-old freshman was murdered, sending shockwaves to the entire community. The episodes of both shows provide us with a detailed account of the entire case with the help of interviews with the victim’s loved ones and officials directly involved in the investigation.

Christian Aguilar Was Missing For Weeks Before His Remains Were Found

On November 16, 1993, Claudia and Carlos Aguilar were blessed to hear the sound of the patter of the tiny feet of Christian S. Aguilar as he entered into this world. The members of the Aguilar-Martinez family were elated upon the baby boy’s arrival and celebrated the same at their residence in Doral in Miami-Dade County, Florida. A devout Christian, he was baptized at a young age and raised amid the love and care of his close ones. Christian showcased a real zest for life and never backed down from participating in its many adventures. Christian was quite athletic as a young boy and enjoyed playing soccer and various other sports while growing up.

Christian obtained his early education from Doral Academy Preparatory School and smiled the widest at his high school graduation ceremony. He was a sincere individual and aspired to become a biomedical engineer. As a step closer to fulfilling his desire, Christian enrolled at the University of Florida in Gainesville in Alachua County and was pursuing a degree in biomedical engineering. A proud Florida Gator, the teenager was a huge fan of Timothy Richard Tebow AKA Tim, a Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback and a renowned name in SEC football who also graduated from the University.

Christian was a free-spirited personality with a smile that held the potential of lighting up the room. His affable nature and warmheartedness won the hearts of those he crossed paths with. A jovial person who believed in lifting others up in their saddest moments, Christian was admired by many and also had several friends. The freshman had faith in himself and harbored high hopes for his future. When things seemed to be working as per his plan, the flame of the 18-year-old’s bright personality was extinguished in a cruel manner. At the time of the incident, Christian had been in a relationship with Erika Friman for a while.

On September 20, 2012, when Erika couldn’t get hold of Christian even after calling multiple times and sending several texts, she got worried and turned to the authorities and filed an official report. The police launched their investigation into the matter and were joined in their efforts by Christian’s family members, friends, and hundreds of locals and volunteers. Even an air unit was employed to determine his whereabouts.

As days passed by, the 18-year-old’s loved ones began to grow concerned about his safety but clung to hope. However, their worst nightmare came true about 22 days after Christian went missing. In the afternoon of October 12, partially buried remains were discovered by a few hunters in a wooded and isolated area in Levy County. The remains were sent for further examination, and the dental records were used to corroborate the identity of Christian Aguilar. The medical report stated that the 18-year-old died of poisoning and strangulation.

Christian Aguilar Became the Target of a Friend Obsessed With Revenge

When Christian Aguilar was reported missing on September 20, 2012, the police got in touch with the last person who had seen him, Pedro Bravo. In the interview, he claimed that he had been feeling suicidal, about which he went to talk to Christian. While they were talking, he mentioned that they had a few disagreements and that a random hitchhiker was also in the vehicle with them for some part of their ride. Pedro was asked to take the authorities through the exact route that he and Christian had taken the day before he disappeared. Pedro was then reportedly taken into custody for 72 hours to ensure that he was not a harm to himself.

The police interrogated Pedro for the second time to determine if his claims in the first one were true or fabricated. They noticed that his account of events had changed, as he even claimed that the disagreement with Christian had gotten physical after dropping off the hitchhiker that day. After four days had passed into the sudden vanishing of Christian, the authorities decided to dig deeper into the relationship between the 18-year-old and Pedro. They soon learned that before Christian, Erika Friman was in a relationship with Pedro. The three of them had gone to the same high school in Doral, Florida. Erika and Pedro broke up in 2012, during their senior year, before the former went to Santa Fe Community College.

Christian and Erika began dating soon after starting their college. However, since the three were friends in high school, the couple decided to keep their relationship a secret from Pedro. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a secret for long, as he learned about their romance through mutual friends. Enraged, he felt betrayed by Christian and allegedly devised a plan to get revenge on him. Reportedly, Pedro’s mental health was already in decline, but when Erika left him, it deteriorated even further. Using this as an excuse, he called up Christian and asked for his support in September 2012. Learning about these clear motives, the investigators delved deep into the matter to dig out evidence against Pedro.

Taking into account his lack of worry for his friend, the officers booked Pedro under “failure to render aid” and obtained a search warrant for his car. While executing the search, the investigators found dirt and limestone traces in the undercarriage and sent it for further testing. Aside from that, they got their hands on a Gatorade bottle and a roll of duct tape. The results mentioned that the residue was actually from Levy County in Gainesville. A further search of Pedro’s residence also led to the discovery of a receipt for the purchase of a shovel.

Moreover, a look into Pedro’s journal revealed his obsession with getting back with Erika and unfurled his elaborate plan to do that “by making Christian disappear.” He was swiftly arrested on September 24, 2012, and charged with first-degree murder of Christian Aguilar on September 28. As the investigation carried on in full swing, a discovery stunned everyone. Around 2:30 pm on October 12, a few hunters in pursuit of jasmine vines inside the wooded area of the Gulf Hammock Hunting Club in Levy County got distracted by a peculiar decomposing smell and stumbled upon a body that was buried partially into the ground.

Following the discovery 8 miles off State Road 24 on Parker Boulevard near Otter Creek, the authorities arrived at the spot. The skeletal remains and the clothes matched the description of Christian’s attire on the day of his disappearance. After confirmation via DNA tests and dental record identification, they broke the tragic news to the family of Christian Aguilar. The authorities also recovered duct tape from where the 18-year-old’s remains were found, and analysts confirmed it to be an exact match to the one they had obtained from Pedro’s car.

While looking for a motive behind the heinous act, the authorities reportedly received another set of reports, which stated that traces of sedatives such as acetaminophen and diphenhydramine were detected on the Gatorade bottle taken from Pedro’s car. He, however, said he got the poison to harm himself. The police further confirmed that the then-20-year-old’s phone was pinged in the parking lot of Walmart on North West 13th Street for about hours on the night of Christian’s death. There were also surveillance pictures of Pedro buying a shovel, tape, knife, etc.

Furthermore, there were reports that the fluid taken for the test from Christian’s lungs indicated strangulation. As per the authorities, Pedro’s obsession with Erika Friman was so intense that it motivated him to map out a plan to take the life of his friend. They stated that he poisoned and strangled Christian around the Wal-Mart and later moved his remains to the woods, where he proceeded to dig a shallow grave and bury it into the ground, enough to hide it from the world. Taking all the evidence into account, the authorities expressed belief that Pedro had killed Christian in an act of premeditation. The former, however, said he wasn’t guilty.

Pedro Bravo is Serving His Sentence in Prison Today

Pedro Bravo went to trial for the first-degree murder of Christian Aguilar on August 5, 2014. Aside from presenting the evidence obtained from the spot where the 18-year-old’s remains were found and Pedro’s car, the prosecutors invited several witnesses onto the stand who testified that Pedro was obsessed with his ex-girlfriend Erika and had an issue with her relationship with Christian. When Erika was asked to testify, she referred to Pedro as “a sociopath, or a sick person” and said: “It was sickening, almost, just because we knew him for so long and Christian was his friend.”

She added, “This was a person we knew. This was intentional, it makes it all so much worse… A lot of it was his obsession for me, and how he wanted me back, and how he wanted to be with me.” In a shocking testimony, Pedro’s former prison mate stated that Pedro confessed to him about strangulating Christian with a moving strap in 13 minutes. After enough deliberation, Bravo was convicted of first-degree murder, false imprisonment, poisoning, tampering with physical evidence, and many other charges.

Pedro was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on August 15, 2014. Despite the verdict, he insisted upon his innocence. However, in one of the letters obtained from his time in prison, he had reportedly referred to himself as “a monster for hurting Chris the way I did.” He filed an appeal in 2016, but the court of Florida rejected the claims. As of writing, Pedro Bravo is serving his life sentence at Okeechobee Correctional Institution in Okeechobee, Florida.

On Sept. 20, 2020, Erika Friman filed a missing persons report after not hearing from her boyfriend, Christian Aguilar, an 18-year-old University of Florida freshman. 

“The night before he was supposed to spend the night with her and he never showed up,” Det. Randy Roberts, of the Gainesville Police Department, told “ Floribama Murders ,” airing Saturdays at 9/8c on Oxygen .

Christian wasn’t at his home. His parents hadn’t heard from him and he wasn’t answering calls.

Roberts spoke with Pedro Bravo, a friend of Christian Friman , who had accompanied Friman to the police station. He said that the day before he and Christian had gone to grab a bite and then to Best Buy to get a Kanye West CD.

“On the way back from Best Buy he picked up a hitchhiker,” said Roberts, adding that Bravo described the stranger as a man in his 50s or 60s with gray hair.

While seated in the backseat, the hitchhiker was fiddling around with some duct tape, according to Bravo. After the hitchhiker got out, the two friends argued over how Bravo was handling personal issues. Christian then asked to be let out of the car, Bravo told sheriffs.

He said he dropped off Christian on the side of the road near a business that sold four-wheel vehicles. It was adjacent to a wooded area.

Bravo claimed he never saw Christian again.

As the last person to have seen Christian, Bravo was key to the case. Detectives asked Bravo to show them the exact route he and Christian had driven the day before. 

During his interview with police, Bravo said he had suicidal feelings that he had wanted to discuss with Christian. In accordance with the Baker Act , Bravo was taken into custody for a 72-hour hold to determine if he was a harm to himself, Roberts told producers.

A search team looked for Christian in the woods near the four-wheeler shop. If he was injured, time was of the essence. Dangerous animals that inhabit the area include alligators, water moccasins, and rattlesnakes, said State Attorney Brian Kramer. 

As detectives searched, they also considered the possibility that Christian had been abducted by the hitchhiker or an unknown third party.

The search for Christian expanded to an air unit and hundreds of volunteers joined, including Christian’s family members from Miami. 

Det. Matthew Goeckel, of the Gainesville Police Department, determined that Christian’s phone had been intentionally powered down.The phone being turned off indicated a strong possibility of foul play, said Goeckel.

Two days passed and searchers turned up no trace of the missing student or the hitchhiker.

Meanwhile, Bravo was released after it was determined he wasn’t suicidal.

“He would say those things to the people around him in order to manipulate them,” Kramer said.

Had Bravo tried to manipulate the police? He was brought back for another interview to determine if he told the truth earlier. His account of events kept changing. He claimed that after dropping off the hitchhiker, the disagreement with Christian got physical .

“I stopped the car … and I just punched him in the face,” he told sheriffs in a recorded interview. 

Bravo then said that he “kept punching” Christian after he was out of the car: “I could see he was OK but he was not gonna get up anytime soon. And then I got in my car and left.”

Bravo’s apparent lack of concern raised a red flag.

“There were things that were not adding up,” Goeckel told producers.

Four days into the case, investigators dug deeper into the relationship between Christian and Bravo. The young men and Friman had graduated from the same high school in Doral, Florida. Friman had dated Bravo but had broken things off with him during their senior year. Friman and Christian began dating after starting college.

Bravo found out through mutual friends that she was dating Christian.

“The situation between Pedro and Christian was very strained because Pedro felt like he had tried to go behind his back to date Erika,” said Roberts.

Detectives devised a way to keep Bravo behind bars to buy time while they looked for incriminating evidence.

“Pedro was arrested for failure to render aid, based on his statements about harming Christian and leaving him helpless,” said Goeckel.

A search warrant was obtained for Bravo’s vehicle. Inside detectives found a Gatorade bottle and a roll of duct tape. Dirt and limestone found on the vehicle’s undercarriage was determined to be from Levy County in Gainesville .

On Oct. 12, two people in that area were alerted to what they believed to be the smell of a decomposing animal. They had stumbled upon human remains in a shallow grave and contacted sheriffs. Only skeletal remains were found, according to detectives. Clothes found in the area matched what Christian was wearing.

DNA from a hip joint and dental records confirmed the body was Christian Aguilar.

Duct tape found with the remains were sent to the crime lab, where it was compared to duct tape from Bravo’s vehicle. Analysts determined that tape at Christian’s burial site was from the same tape roll found in the car, investigators said.

Detectives initially believed that Bravo acted in a fit of rage. But analysis of the Gatorade bottle revealed that it was laced with sedatives, which indicated the crime was premeditated, according to “Floribama Murders.”

Bloody fluid from Christian’s lungs that seeped into the carpet indicated that he had most likely been strangled . 

A search warrant was secured for Bravo’s home, where detectives found a receipt for a shovel. They also found journals filled with disturbing entries detailing Bravo’s step-by-step plan to win back Friman “by making Christian disappear,” said Kramer.

Bravo was arrested on Sept. 28 for Christian’s murder. 

As police and prosecutors worked to solidify the case against him, they learned that Bravo allegedly shared his plan with another Alachua County Jail inmate to have other murders committed to make it look like the killer was still at large, according to “Floribama Murders.”

“It kind of just makes the back of your hair stand up,” said Kramer. 

Investigators confirmed that the cellmate was telling the truth because his information led them to the shovel used in the crime. The piece of evidence fortified an already-strong case.

On Aug. 4, 2014, Bravo’s trial began. An entry from his journal was read in court: “ I am a monster for having hurt to Christian,” reported Gainesville.com . 

Bravo, then 20, was convicted and sentenced to life in prison .

“We didn't celebrate,” Christian’s grieving father told producers. “There was nothing to celebrate.”

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
