Why see Bruno Mars?

Bruno Mars is on top of the world right now. Still basking in the success of his Mark Ronson collaboration 'Uptown Funk', he followed it up with another fierce of glittering pop funk, '24K Magic', the lead single from the album of the same name. A showcase for his incredible skills as a songwriter, musician and all-round entertainer, An Evening With Silk Sonic with Anderson Paak is another entry in a hits-filled catalog that has seen Bruno become one of the biggest names in music.

Beginning his career as a songwriter (Cee-Lo's 'Forget You' is maybe his most famous writing credit), Mars has since made the transition to blockbuster singer. Whether it's ballads ('Grenade', 'Just the Way You Are'), insanely catchy pop numbers ('The Lazy Song') or driving anthems ('Locked Out of Heaven') Bruno can do it all.

Bruno Mars is the stage name of Peter Gene Hernandez, a producer, singer and songwriter born on the 8th of October, 1985 who hails from Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A. Since debuting in 2009 he has become one of the most musically diverse and commercially successful pop stars in the world.

If there’s one thing that makes the current pop charts an exciting place to be it’s the return of pop’s great auteurs. The renegades who can make a delicious pop single out of the most far flung hooks and long dead genre’s, we need to hang on to the likes of Pharrell Williams, Kanye West, and our current topic Bruno Mars, for as long as we can. It’s very telling that the thing that unites all of those artists that I just mentioned is the fact that they all got their breaks as ground-breaking producers. Their time spent engineering every aspect of other people’s songs meant that they’re free to experiment, and Mars does so more than any of them.

Mars was born into a musical family, and by the time he was five years old he was performing four nights a week with his family’s band The Love Notes. He made a name for himself with a dead on Elvis Presley impersonation, but it was a later obsession with Jimi Hendrix that lead him to pick up the guitar and start writing songs. At the age of 17 he graduated from high school and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a full time career in music, everything looked to be going his way as he signed a contract with Motown Records in 2004, the year after he made the move, but it was not to be the case.

Music industry fumbling meant that Mars went nowhere with his solo career but made one crucial contact in the form of Phillip Lawrence, with whom he would later team up with to form his production group The Smeezingtons along with Ari Levine. The trio hustled around LA writing and producing hits for The Sugababes, Travie McCoy and Sean Kingston among many others, but it wasn’t until 2009 when Mars started making guest appearances on those songs, and in 2010 they caught lightning in a bottle with B.O.B’s “Nothin’ On You”, not just written and produced by Mars’ trio, but with its killer hook sung by Mars himself.

With a serious amount of buzz generated by “Nothin’ On You”, Mars released his debut E.P “It’s Better If You Don’t Understand” in May of the same year. A couple of months later his single “Just The Way You Are” reached the summit of the Billboard Hot 100 and the hits have kept on coming since then. “Grenade”? “Treasure”? “Locked Out Of Heaven”? “The Lazy Song”? There just doesn’t seem to be any way of stopping this once in a generation talent, and he’s still yet to reach his prime, either on record or in his blistering live shows. Highly recommended.

Live reviews

I went to a Bruno Mars concert last night, and I thought it was great. When I first got there, everyone was really hyped up and excited, and the mood was contagious. The merchandise were cool, though it was very expensive (but what else do you expect at a concert?). Aloe Blacc went on before Bruno and sang some of his famous songs, and later came out to sign autographs. When Bruno finally came out, he did so with a big bang (literally, it sounded like a gunshot). Throughout the concert, he remained energetic, and would also stop every once in a while to talk to the audience. He made the audience feel like he was glad to be there and was having a good time with us. Bruno Mars' sings many types of genres, including pop, reggae, soul, R&B, and pop rock. He has many different and original songs, one about getting his money stolen to another upbeat song about being lazy. Some of his more recent songs have a few cuss words, for example his song Gorilla. He made sure to sing the songs with cuss words toward the end of the concert, when all of the younger kids would have most likely left already. He actually surprised the audience quite a bit with this. He had a fake ending; said goodnight and thank you for coming, and 5 minutes later came back out and sang some of his expletive songs. Overall I loved this concert, and I highly recommend you go too!

There is no doubt that Bruno Mars is one of the top male singers today. And if you haven't been to see him in concert, you're really missing out. His live performances are extremely entertaining.

Many people don't realise that he's more than just a singer: his dance moves are smooth, and when he plays a drum solo, the girls cannot stop screaming! Honestly, you would think he was famous for his drum playing because he is just that good. Bruno Mars is very talented.

He's also easy on the eyes ;) He's good looking and he usually wears a James Brown-type style suit which is very fitting since he dances like James Brown too. You can't help but dance along when he's performing “Runaway”, or to sing along when he's performing “Just The Way You Are”. Also, his band is perfect: when they're backing him up, there is so much energy. He keeps it simple while giving a performance of a lifetime, no matter what the event is.

Bruno Mars' live performances make me happy. I love him and I love how talented he is. He gives his performances his all, and never disappoints. When he's done, you can't help but to give him a standing ovation and beg for more. Once the concert is over, you can bet you're going to go home and listen to Bruno Mars even more.

The Bruno Mars concert was seriously phonominal. He is such a great performer and a great singer. He's so so so good live. Him and the hooligans are amazing. They're really funny and they dance a lot and it's so good! I really think that man can do anything and pull it off. If you go to the concert you will not regret or forget it. It's so memorable and such a great time. There are lots of suprizes during the whole concert and it really keeps you on your feet. He's amazing and if he ever comes back to my city or anywhere near it I'm going to be there. He did a variety of different songs. He did reggae, his slow songs, his faster songs (like Natalie, Gorilla, etc). He even covered some songs (like bump and grind and other classics) he didn't sing the whole songs but he did the best parts of the songs he covered and mixed it together. It's very hard to explain but that was very memorable. There was singing, fire, glitter confetti, dancing, Bruno Mars and the Hooligans... What else could you want? Did you know in Honolulu Hawaii where 'Bruno' was born as 'Peter Gene Bayot Hernandez'? Hope you go to the 'Moonshine Jungle Tour because it's amazing! Have fun!

Overall, the Bruno Mars concert was an incredible experience. The fact that he could sing like a dove, play a mean guitar lick, AND dance his pants off - all at the same time - blew me away. I was kept entertained all night long.

The great thing about Bruno's set is that although it was short and focuses mostly on his most recent album, it was the most diverse set I've ever seen performed at a concert; from covers to original songs, Bruno sang pop, rock, disco, doo-wop, R&B, hip-hop, reggae, and soul, delivering every genre with the same vigor and excitement.

The next best thing about the concert besides Bruno himself was his band, the Hooligans. Not only were they talented singers and performers, but also they also danced and laughed with Bruno like old buddies, making the concert seem much more like an intimate gig with friends.

Basically, GO SEE HIM! You'll dance, you'll laugh, and hey, you might even cry during the ballads. So GO and find out! :)

This concert was perhaps one of the best concerts I've been to and that says a lot since I just turned 59 and 365 days (it's still difficult for me to admit that I'm X0 years old.... I saw Jimmie Hendrix in concert, Moody Blues, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Cream, Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum, Jason Aldean, Siberian Orchestra, Johnny Mathis and many many more artists and this concert ranked in the top 5. The dancing was fantastic, his stage presence and how he played with the crowd (mostly the ladies) was FUN!!!! His drum solo-words cannot describe it... I only wish I could see him tonight in Milwaukee (I live in Wisconsin) at Summerfest tonight. I would go again to see him....Aloe Blacc was great also!!!!! Thanks for asking.

The Bruno Mars concert was amazing! The only fault that I would say is that there was a lot of waiting Dua Lipa was right on time and it felt like when’s Bruno coming?! Then after Dua Lipa we had to wait for them to set Bruno up which felt like forever, but when he was out there it was amazing he had fireworks and amazing dance moves and his singing was just amazing. He even added some comedy in there, and he was putting his absolute all you could see by the sweat on his body. After we thought it was over but he surprised us with an extra song :) it was an experience of a lifetime and I must say for my first concert it was A M A Z I N G ! For the merchandise I feel some of it was just a bit overpriced like the hats.

I spent $256 on a ticket and flew from Florida to Las Vegas to see this fiasco of a show. The show was supposed to start at 9. The curtain finally rose at almost 9:30. The drums and bass were so loud, little of the vocals could be heard. The band was off several times, there was limited choreography, 2 solos (drum and piano, neither of which were Bruno, OBVIOUS TIME FILLERS), and the show lasted one hour and 15 minutes. TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY!!!! IT SUCKED!! I am used to hearing songs sung at concerts, not stopped mid-way to laugh and joke. Bruno Mars needs to go to some REAL concerts so he can see how to please his PAYING AUDIENCE. Go get some lessons from Pink, Elton John, who ever, Bruno, cause your show is a joke!!

celynn-desfosses’s profile image

It was an absolutely amazing night! The performance was stunning and the atmosphere was filled with laughter and happiness. Bruno Mars did an incredible job, by making sure everybody was having a party, and you could just see how much he loved standing on that scene and singing to the crowd. Also I am not going to forget Anderson.Paak who played just before Bruno went on stage. Andersson.Paak made sure, that everyone were ready for the big party, and he too is an incredible musician. Bruno Mars even learned how to say "I love you" in danish, which made us feel even closer to him. I will never forget this night!

Bruno Mars was I-N-C-R-E-D-I-B-L-E!!!!!

He sang all of my favorite songssss and ne sang UPTOWN FUNK!!!! AWESOME!!!!

The concert was AWESOME! The opening person was really good and did a lot with the audience. She talked to the people not as a pop star but as a person. Her song choices really set the mood and went from sad songs to happy songs and did a outstanding job. For Bruno Mars him self did super good. His back up people were an awesome addition to the show. The record thing was a really cool idea. The show was a little delayed because it didn't start until like 15 after 8. Other than that the show was awesome and set the bar very high for the people after him. love you Bruno Mars

Event Information

Today Bruno Mars announced special guests Boyz II Men, Charlie Wilson, Ciara, and Ella Mai will join upcoming U.S. dates as part of his 24K Magic World Tour this fall.

Mars, who is currently nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction for his TV special “24K Magic: Live At The Apollo,” recently announced that his international outing will close with a trio of homecoming performances in Honolulu, Hawaii. The three dates at Aloha Stadium are a record-breaker for the venue, with no other artist in its history to have booked that number of successive dates.

Produced by Live Nation, Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic World Tour has traveled the globe since 2017, and will have made over 135 stops across North America, Latin America, Europe, and the U.K once wrapped this November. The massively successful outing by the multiple-GRAMMY Award winner has sold out stadiums and arenas around the world, and was credited with selling 1 million tickets in a single day.

The 24K Magic World Tour celebrates Mars’ multiple GRAMMY Award-winning, 2x RIAA Platinum-certified album, 24K Magic (http://smarturl.it/24kmagic), released in November 2016 via Atlantic Records. The 24K Magic World Tour has been Mars’ first full-length tour since his hugely successful Moonshine Jungle World Tour in 2013, an international blockbuster that sold 2 million tickets worldwide across 155 sold-out dates.

Preakness LIVE is an integral part of Baltimore 1/ST, a campaign launched in 2022 by The Stronach Group’s 1/ST brand in collaboration with Baltimore’s Kevin Liles , Chairman & CEO of 300 Elektra Entertainment, Co-Founder & CEO of 300 Entertainment, and Head of 300 Studios, and in consultation with Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott , to champion the event’s connection to Baltimore by leveraging the Preakness platform to highlight the city’s rich entertainment, arts and community culture.

“Preakness LIVE celebrates Baltimore and reflects the vibrant energy, rich diversity and forward momentum of this great city,” said Belinda Stronach, Chairwoman, Chief Executive Officer and President, The Stronach Group and 1/ST . “We are thrilled to be back and working with Mayor Scott, Kevin Liles and many cultural and community leaders, to strengthen and evolve the rich heritage of the Preakness and the connection we have with our fans and the amazing people of Baltimore.”

“As a native son of Baltimore, I welcome every opportunity to shine a light on this city that I love so much,” said Kevin Liles . “Collaborating with 1/ST, Mayor Brandon Scott, and the Park Heights community on the Preakness LIVE celebration provides another chance to unite our great city through sports and entertainment. I was so proud to be a part of last year’s inaugural event, showcasing the rich culture that Baltimore has to offer. This year, I look forward to building on that ideal, and welcome my good friend Bruno Mars to the Preakness LIVE stage.”

Preakness LIVE will shine a spotlight on Baltimore’s vibrant art scene with the return of the infield art garden featuring unique works by local artists using shipping containers as a canvas, provided by Ports America Chesapeake and in partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Art & Culture . An installation of selected works of art from the Preakness Art of Racing in collaboration with Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) will also be on display. The winning artwork of The Art of Racing will be reproduced on a curated collection of Preakness merchandise available for sale during Preakness 148, the proceeds of which will be used to support the activities of Park Heights Renaissance , a non-profit organization that provides employment opportunities and pursues affordable housing for members of the Park Heights community.

Baltimore’s culinary culture will be given a showcase in the Pimlico infield featuring pop-ups by local restaurants serving signature favorites to the crowd. This year the inclusion of local culinary offerings will extend beyond Preakness LIVE with catering partners Baltimore’s Atlas Restaurant Group and the woman-owned Maryland based brand, Ridgewells . Hiatus Cheesecake founded by Baltimore’s Matthew Featherstone will provide desserts for Preakness 148 guests.

As part of the evolution of the experience, the Preakness LIVE stage, once positioned in the center of the Pimlico infield, will relocate to provide an unparalleled view of one of the most exciting moments in horse racing – the view of the final stretch brought to you in partnership with luxury global entertainment and hospitality brand, Palm Tree Crew .

The reimagined infield layout will include a 1/ST wagering activation, modeled after a modern sportsbook equipped with betting ambassadors to introduce and educate a new audience to betting.

Tickets for Preakness LIVE, including for the fan favorite Mug Club and limited availability VIP experiences are on sale now and can be purchased at www.preakness.com/preakness-live with General Admission starting at $59. Preakness LIVE hospitality offerings are presented in consultation with Karlitz & Company .

The Preakness Stakes, the middle jewel of the coveted Triple Crown, returns on May 20 for its 148th running with the finest contenders in Thoroughbred horse racing competing for a total of $3.5 million in purse winnings as part of the two-day race program. Preakness weekend will kick off on Black-Eyed Susan Day on May 19 with a full day race card ending in the running of the 98th George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes.

Following the running of the George E. Mitchell Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, the recipient of the George E. Mitchell Park Heights Community Fellowship Grant, awarded by Park Heights Renaissance, will be recognized with a special presentation from the Winner’s Circle. The iconic race was renamed in 2020 to highlight the extraordinary legacy of Mitchell himself and to create a platform for the recognition of those in the Park Heights community who share in Mitchell’s vision and leadership towards revitalization of the Park Heights community.

In the lead up to the Preakness, Park Heights Renaissance will sponsor and present the second annual community based George “Spider” Anderson Preakness Music and Arts Festival in recognition of the first African American jockey to win the Preakness Stakes in 1889. The day-long festival taking place in the 4700 block of Park Heights Avenue on May 13 will feature live music, arts & crafts, top local food trucks and will highlight community businesses and partners.

11x GRAMMY-winner and multi-platinum selling artist Bruno Mars has announced the last set of new dates that will be added to the 24K Magic World Tour, including  October 7 & 8 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville . The newly announced dates of the entertainment-packed tour, produced by Live Nation, will feature special guest Ella Mai.

Tickets for the new dates will go on sale to the general public Friday, February 16 at 12pm local time at Ticketmaster.com or by calling 800.745.3000.

The 24K Magic World Tour celebrates Mars’ 2x RIAA Platinum-certified album, 24K Magic, released in November 2016 via Atlantic Records. The 24K Magic World Tour has been Mars’ first full length tour since his hugely successful Moonshine Jungle World Tour in 2013, an international blockbuster that sold 2 million tickets worldwide across 155 sold-out  dates. Mars most recently appeared on the 60th GRAMMY Awards for a show-stopping performance of his hit single “Finesse” with fellow chart topper Cardi B. Mars also swept the awards that night, taking home the seven GRAMMYs he was nominated for, including Album of the Year (24K Magic), Record of the Year (“24K Magic”), Song of the Year (“That’s What I Like”), Best R&B Performance (“That’s What I Like”), Best R&B Song (“That’s What I Like”), Best R&B Album (24K Magic), and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical (24K Magic).  Mars’ 60th Annual GRAMMY wins make him only the tenth artist to win the “Big 3” (Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year) in the same night, following Simon and Garfunkel, Eric Clapton, Norah Jones, and Adele.

Bruno Mars Gifted Custom Royal Oaks to His Band and Manager. Now They’re Flipping Them.

From a batch of eight customized audemars piguet royal oak reference 15202s, at least four are for sale., allen farmelo, allen farmelo's most recent stories, we wore the ‘star trek’-themed urwerk ur-120 watch for a week. here’s what it was like..

Bruno Mars Audemars Piguet Royal Oak for manager Aaron Elharar.

It’s a solid gold Royal Oak, so it’s a joy to wear and photograph, as I expected. What I didn’t expect when handling this watch—as well as one previously belonging to Mars’s bass player at Sotheby’s earlier this year—was sadness.

The dial on the blue one-of-a-kind Royal Oak from Mars is stunningly detailed.

When Mars surprised his band with the watches, he took to social media with photos of the backstage presentation and wrote, “My boys continue to show the world what time it is, and a band that sings together blings together!” Mars broke up the Hooligans after that tour, and then the pandemic hit, halting the careers of touring musicians around the world. So far, the Hooligans have yet to sing together since, and with at least four of these custom Royal Oaks having been flipped, it appears they’re no longer blinging together, either.

Condition of the Royal Oak for sale through M. S. Rau in New Orleans is excellent, but the watch was obviously worn. It is priced at $200,000.

Putting emotions to the side, however, we can’t fault the collectability of these customized Royal Oaks, nor can we fault the timing of these flips. In 2018, when Mars gifted the watches, the watch market was just building serious steam. By 2020 the watch market was booming, and by 2022 it was off the chain —especially for Royal Oaks. It’s hard not to imagine that some of these musicians found their bank accounts hungrier than their sense of horological nostalgia. (One collector I spoke with suggested that Mars may have given his band these watches as a kind of nest-egg, though I think that’s a stretch, especially given the customization.)

The initials on the rotors are thinly veiled clues. For example, I had no idea which manager it was that Mars had given the blue-dial watch to, but a little internet searching revealed that the only match to “AE” would be Aaron Elharar. This special one-of-a-kind blue example is going to set you back $200,000 .

Sotheby’s sold another one of the band’s watches with a gold dial in June, and this one likely belonged to the bass player, Jamareo Artis. The “JA” on the rotor makes that obvious, and Sotheby’s head of watches Jeff Hess told me as much when I previewed the timepiece earlier this year. Interestingly, this watch also sold in a direct on-line sale (with no price disclosed) to a private collector who may have been the one to re-flip it at Sotheby’s for $120,000 . When Artis might have first flipped it remains unclear.

bruno mars tour maryland

That’s at least four that are no longer with their original owners, and possibly five, should that one with the hidden rotor turn out not to be one of the ones being flipped elsewhere. How quickly provenance scatters in the digital winds.

A fantastic-looking Royal Oak 15202 with a hidden story on the backside that makes it a one-of-a-kind.

Since the Hooligans disbanded, Mars started a new band called Silk Sonic, which appears to still be up and running. Perhaps we will be seeing some Silk Sonic watches flipped when Mars moves on again to another artistic phase and another band—which, frankly speaking as a music guy, is a mark of a great artist.

The NPR Network will be reporting live from Chicago throughout the week bringing you  the latest on the Democratic National Convention .

DJ Cassidy and the Democrats played special tracks for each state and territory during Tuesday night's roll call.

WATCH: The full Democratic National Convention celebratory roll call

But what song — or songs, in some cases — repped your state? We found them all so you don't have to. Better yet, we offer some reasons behind the choices.

Alabama : Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd

While Lynyrd Skynyrd's ode to Alabama might seem like an obvious choice, the band was formed in Jacksonville, Fla.

Alaska : Feel It Still - Portugal. The Man

The rock band is from Wasilla, Alaska, where two of its members met in high school and began playing music together.

American Samoa : Edge of Glory - Lady Gaga

The song choice is a tongue-in-cheek nod to the territory's position as the southernmost territory in the United States.

Arizona : Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks

Singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks, known for both her solo career and her work in the band Fleetwood Mac, is from Phoenix.

Arkansas : Don't Stop - Fleetwood Mac

Speaking of Nicks, her band's track "Don't Stop" became the official song of Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign, with the band even uniting to perform at the former president's first inaugural ball. Clinton is famously from Hope, Arkansas, and served as the state's governor from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1983 to 1992.

California : The Next Episode - Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg, California Love - Tupac Shakur, featuring Dr. Dre, Alright - Kendrick Lamar, Not Like Us - Kendrick Lamar

Nearly all of the above artists are legendary California musicians, with Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar born in Compton, and Snoop Dogg born in Long Beach. Only Tupac stands out among the native Californians, having been born in New York City.

Colorado : September - Earth, Wind & Fire

Philip James Bailey, one of two lead singers of Earth, Wind & Fire was born in Denver. What's more, he turned to Denver East High School friends Larry Dunn and Andrew Woolfolk to shore up the band after some original members left, according to the Colorado Music Hall of Fame .

Connecticut : Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I'm Yours) - Stevie Wonder

It’s “kind of a perfect campaign song,” as Chris Willman, the chief music critic at Variety , notes on Morning Edition . Wonder is from Michigan, but that didn’t stop Barack Obama from making “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” a hallmark of his two presidential campaigns.

Delaware : Higher Love - Kygo & Whitney Houston

Higher Love has been a staple of President Biden's campaign, with the track playing at the end of his 2020 acceptance speech.

Democrats abroad: Love Train - The O'Jays

Washington, D.C. : Let Me Clear My Throat - DJ Kool

The legendary rapper was born and raised in our nation's capital.

Florida : I Won't Back Down - Tom Petty

Tom Petty was born in Gainesville, Fla. His “American Girl” was also used by Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Georgia : Turn Down For What - DJ Snake and Lil Jon

Lil Jon made a surprise convention appearance to express his support for Kamala Harris. The rapper is from Atlanta, while DJ Snake, his counterpart on the track, is from Guam : Espresso - Sabrina Carpenter

The summer hit, which has over a billion streams on Spotify, is one of several songs that may have been chosen simply for their mass appeal — and understandably so. In June, Carpenter became the first artist since The Beatles to have two songs debut within the top three spots on the Billboard Hot 100.

Hawai’i : 24K Magic - Bruno Mars

R&B and funk musician Mars is from Honolulu, Hawai'i.

Idaho : Private Idaho - The B-52's

"Private Idaho" was a single off the Georgia band's second album, though they didn't play a show in the state of Idaho until 2011.

Illinois : Sirius - The Alan Parsons Project

"Sirius" was the walk-on music for the Chicago's NBA team, the Bulls.

Indiana - Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough - Michael Jackson

Jackson was born in Gary, Ind. — the eighth of 10 children.

Iowa : Celebration - Kool & The Gang

A classic party anthem, Kool & The Gang actually hail from New Jersey. Meanwhile, Iowa passed on their hometown heroes of the band Slipknot.

Kansas : Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas

The band Kansas was formed in the state in 1973, hailing from its capital city of Topeka.

Kentucky : First Class - Jack Harlow

Rapper and singer Harlow was born in Louisville, Ky., and raised in Shelbyville.

Louisiana : All I Do Is Win - DJ Khaled

Rapper and producer DJ Khaled is from New Orleans.

Maine : Shut Up and Dance - WALK THE MOON

It’s a universally adored pop hit, even if the state did borrow it from a Cincinnati, Ohio, band.

Maryland : Respect - Aretha Franklin

Using an anthem by the queen of soul — with roots in Tennessee and Michigan — is the only reason we can think of to pass on Billie Holiday, Toni Braxton and David Byrne, who are among other talent with Maryland ties.

Massachusetts : I’m Shipping Up to Boston - Dropkick Murphys

The American Celtic band was formed in Quincy, Mass. The song itself describes a sailor with a missing leg, who is going to Boston in search of a wooden prosthetic.

Michigan : Lose Yourself - Eminem

The rapper famously grew up in Detroit and his 2002 movie 8 Mile is set in the Motor City.

Minnesota : Kiss - Prince & The Revolution, 1999 - Prince & The Revolution

The celebrated musician was born in Minneapolis, Minn., in 1958. The singer also died in his home state in Paisley Park in 2016 at the age of 57.

Mississippi : Twistin' the Night Away - Sam Cooke

One of the most influential soul singers of all time, Cooke was born in Clarksdale, Miss.

Missouri : Good Luck, Babe! - Chappell Roan

The 26-year-old from Willard, Mo., has found herself on a meteoric rise to stardom following the release of her 2023 album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.

Montana : American Woman - Lenny Kravitz

Several of the songs remaining in the DNC roll call playlist veer towards simply keeping the party going, with no obvious ties between the tracks and their assigned states. But these hits are on-brand for a party building momentum around the goal of putting a woman in the White House.

Nebraska : Firework - Katy Perry

Nevada : Mr. Brightside - The Killers

The rock band was formed in Las Vegas in 2001 by Brandon Flowers and Dave Keuning.

New Hampshire : Don’t Stop Believin' - Journey

New Jersey : Born in the U.S.A. - Bruce Springsteen

"The Boss" is famously from Long Branch, N.J.

New Mexico : Confident - Demi Lovato

The singer-songwriter was born in Albuquerque, N.M.

New York : Empire State of Mind - Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys

The song serves as an ode to New York City by the two artists, who are from Brooklyn and Manhattan respectively.

North Carolina : Raise Up - Petey Pablo

The rapper and record producer is from Greenville, N.C.

North Dakota : Girl on Fire - Alicia Keys

Northern Mariana Islands : Ain’t No Mountain High Enough - Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell

Ohio : Green Light - John Legend featuring André 3000

Legend was born in Springfield, Ohio, while André 3000 hails from Atlanta.

Oklahoma:  Garth Brooks - Ain't Goin' Down ('til the Sun Comes Up)

Country singer Brooks was born in Tulsa, Okla., but raised in Yukon.

Oregon : Float On - Modest Mouse

The rock band was formed in Issaquah, Wash., in 1993, but is now based in Portland, Ore.

Pennsylvania : Motownphilly - Boyz II Men, Black and Yellow - Wiz Khalifa

Vocal group Boyz II Men is from Philadelphia, with the music video for "Motownphilly" filmed across locations in their home city. Wiz Khalifa's "Black and Yellow" is about growing up in Pittsburgh, Pa. The colors represent that city's NFL team, the Steelers.

During their 2011 Super Bowl match-up against the Green Bay Packers, the team used the track as their fight song, while their opponents used a remix, "Green and Yellow," as their own.

Puerto Rico : Despacito - Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee

Both Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee hail from San Juan, Puerto Rico. A remix of the hit track featuring Justin Bieber was released in 2017.

Rhode Island : Shake it Off - Taylor Swift

Swift owns the single most expensive home in the state of Rhode Island — an entire estate called High Watch, which she purchased in 2013.

South Carolina : Get Up I Feel Like Being A Sex Machine - James Brown

James Brown was born on May 3, 1933, in Barnwell, S.C.

South Dakota : What I Like About You - The Romantics

Tennessee : 9 to 5 - Dolly Parton

Country music star Dolly Parton was born in Pittman Center, Tenn., and currently lives just outside of Nashville. Her Dollywood theme park and resorts are located in Pigeon Forge.

Texas : TEXAS HOLD EM' - Beyoncé

This one's a little self-explanatory.

The 1992 hit is played at University of Wisconsin home football games as students and fans jump and cheer, becoming synonymous with the state's flagship university.

Wyoming : I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Peas

The DNC also released a playlist of all the included songs you can find here.

Correction Aug. 21, 2024

A previous version of this story misspelled Bruce Springsteen’s birthplace. It is Long Branch, New Jersey. It also incorrectly identified when The Killers formed, which was in 2001, and misspelled Noah Kahan's hometown, Strafford. We have also corrected Macklemore's birthplace to Seattle and James Brown's to Barnwell, S.C.
