How Can I Find out If My Tour Bus Is Safe to Ride?

We have all seen examples of poor driving, unsafe vehicles, and badly-maintained buses. These issues become very important when you are planning to take a motorcoach tour. How can you find out if your tour bus is really safe to ride?

Use the US Passenger Carrier Safety Database

In the United States , the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) monitors interstate bus and truck safety. If you will be traveling on a bus that crosses a state line, you can find out about your chosen tour company or charter bus by visiting the FMCSA's Passenger Carrier Safety page. You can search by company or by vehicle type, but most of us will find it easier to search by company.

For example, if you enter "Greyhound" in the name field, you will be taken to a page that shows your search results. You might see several Greyhound affiliates listed as "Not Allowed to Operate," as well as information about Greyhound Canada Transportation ULC and Greyhound Lines, Inc. Clicking on “Greyhound Lines, Inc.” will take you to the Greyhound data page, where you can review driver and vehicle safety statistics and see performance information by category.

If you cannot find your tour company’s name, you may wish to telephone the company and ask if they contract with a charter company for their motorcoach services. Chances are good that you will be able to find the charter company’s name in the FMCSA safety listings.

While Canada does not have a national passenger carrier safety database, it does make bus safety recall information available to the public. Canada's Motor Vehicle Safety Recalls Database includes recall data for commercial buses. To use this database, you need to know the manufacturers, model names and model years of the buses your tour company uses.

It is difficult to find information about bus passenger safety in Mexico; it does not appear that the Mexican government compiles bus safety information that is searchable by company name or bus manufacturer.

Tip: The FMCSA bus safety listings also include Canadian and Mexican companies if they also operate in the US.

Note:  As of this writing, the FMCSA's Passenger Carrier Safety web page does not work. A note at the top of the page states, "The search capability of this web page is currently not functioning due to technical difficulties. FMCSA is working to repair the problem." This issue has lasted for several months, which makes it difficult to predict when the search function will be restored. As a workaround, you can use the  Department of Transportation's SAFER database  to look up company snapshots, which include at least some information about tour companies and charter bus companies, including basic safety information.

Another Route: Use the SaferBus App to Choose Your Bus Company

The FMCSA has created the free SaferBus app to help Android and iPhone users choose which interstate bus companies they travel with. SaferBus lets you check operating status of a particular bus company registered with the US Department of Transportation, evaluate that company's safety performance and file a safety, service or discrimination complaint against a bus company from your smartphone.

Note:  As of this writing, the SaferBus app is not available in the iTunes store. Reviews on Google Play indicate that the SaferBus app does not work any longer. This may be related to the problems with the FMCSA Passenger Carrier Safety database's search function described above.

Report Unsafe Buses and Drivers to the FMSCA

If you see a bus driver behaving in an unsafe manner, such as texting while driving, or if you notice that a bus has safety issues, you should report the bus or driver to the FMSCA. You can do this by calling 1-888-DOT-SAFT (1-888-368-7238) or by filling out a report at the National Consumer Complaint Database website . Of course, if you see a true emergency, you should immediately call 911.

If your US tour bus violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), either because it does not have the required equipment or because that equipment is broken, you can report the bus company to the FMSCA by telephone or online, using the telephone number and website listed above.

5 Ways to Stay Safe on Bus Trips Abroad

Traveling by bus abroad can be a fun and affordable way to see the sights, but depending on where you go, road safety can be a big issue. Here’s what to know before you go.

safe tourist bus

By Tanya Mohn

Terrorism, infectious disease and crime are common worries for travelers, but we’re all much more likely to be hurt or killed on the world’s roads. Many of us don’t drive when abroad — instead we enjoy bus tours, taxis or other private vehicles, but that doesn’t mean you’re at the whim of your driver. Here are some tips to stay safe on the roads when traveling, even when you’re not at the wheel.

Motor vehicle collisions are the top killer of healthy U.S. citizens abroad and most traffic deaths worldwide occur in low- to middle-income countries, where roads and infrastructure are often in poor condition. Traffic laws, enforcement and driver’s training are often weak in those locales, and vehicles are sometimes old and not maintained.

Bus crashes are not tracked globally, but bus travel is high risk for travelers abroad, said Rochelle Sobel, founder of the Association for Safe International Road Travel (Asirt). “Many travelers are totally unaware of the hazards, but knowing how to navigate them is potentially life saving,” she said. “The challenges are getting greater.”

Guidebooks and other tourism materials typically do not include much information on road safety, Ms. Sobel said. Checking the United States State Department’s website is a good place to start, as it provides general and country-specific safety advice, including dangerous highways to avoid and common driver behavior.

Asirt provides more detailed information in both its comprehensive Road Travel Reports and concise Road Safety Reviews; samples can be viewed by registering and searching on its website . Materials for all countries are available for a fee or through university or corporate memberships.

The Belize report, for example, advises that many buses are old or are decommissioned U.S. school buses that may be in poor condition, and “bus drivers may lack proper training, use excessive speed or make dangerous training maneuvers.” The World Health Organization’s interactive map details traffic safety by country. It’s also important to program your cellphone with both local and at-home emergency contacts and consider obtaining travel medical insurance.

Learn About the Local Road Culture

Don’t assume that the safety standards in the U.S. are the same in foreign countries. In some countries buses don’t stop near a curb or designated area, and passengers are expected to get on and off in busy traffic. This is just an example, but it pays to pay attention to the ways locals handle the roads both at the wheel and as pedestrians.

“Watch what locals do and how they protect themselves,” Ms. Sobel said. Young travelers often want to experience a place like a local, but popular, inexpensive and fast modes often have poor safety records. Do your diligence before you hop on a packed bus or rickety tram just because it offers a so-called authentic experience.

Ask Questions

Ask your travel agent, tour operator, or hotel how they vet the drivers and bus companies they recommend. If you book a bus on your own, use established companies, or companies that freely and openly disclose their safety records and policies.

Before you take a long bus trip, ask about the route, and whether it’s a standard route that the driver has taken before. Well-maintained and well-lit roads are preferable to smaller ones, and have better access for emergency medical services should they be necessary. Ask if the driver has been behind the wheel for more than eight hours and if there is backup for long journeys. Most bus and tour companies that operate aboveboard should be willing to have this conversation with you, and those that aren’t should arouse your suspicion. If you have doubts, consider taking a train or hiring a private car service with a local driver who is familiar with the region.

Avoid Night Travel

Overnight buses are a perennial favorite of budget-minded travelers who want to save on hotel stays. In some cases that may be true, but in many countries, particularly in rural areas, taking a bus at night or in early dawn hours is strongly discouraged because drivers often turn off their headlights; they falsely believe it saves the vehicle’s batteries. The danger is exacerbated when roads are in bad condition, where visibility is poor, and in mountain areas with narrow, winding roads.

In countries with higher road safety standards and bus companies that operate more transparently, overnight bus trips may be an affordable and comfortable option, but it’s critical to do your homework before booking one.

Spot Red Flags Before You Depart

Bottom line, if something seems amiss, speak up. If a driver is being reckless or speeding, politely ask that he or she slow down. Be assertive. If the situation does not improve or if the driver seems impaired or overly fatigued, get off the bus as soon as possible. If you don’t speak the language, ask a local to assist.

Avoid buses in poor condition or that are crowded and top-heavy, which can offset the center of gravity. Check if the bus’s tires are bald or low on air, or if the name of the company on the bus is unclear. You don’t have to be a mechanic, but look the bus over as if it were your own vehicle, and decide if you feel safe enough to ride in it.

After a crash, bus companies often close down, repaint their vehicles, and reopen under new names. “Look at the vehicle and ask yourself,” Ms. Sobel said “‘is this the wisest choice?’”

  • COVID-19 travel advice

Considering travel during the pandemic? Take precautions to protect yourself from COVID-19.

A coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine can prevent you from getting COVID-19 or from becoming seriously ill due to COVID-19 . But even if you're vaccinated, it's still a good idea to take precautions to protect yourself and others while traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you've had all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses, including boosters, you're less likely to become seriously ill or spread COVID-19 . You can then travel more safely within the U.S. and internationally. But international travel can still increase your risk of getting new COVID-19 variants.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that you should avoid travel until you've had all recommended COVID-19 vaccine and booster doses.

Before you travel

As you think about making travel plans, consider these questions:

  • Have you been vaccinated against COVID-19 ? If you haven't, get vaccinated. If the vaccine requires two doses, wait two weeks after getting your second vaccine dose to travel. If the vaccine requires one dose, wait two weeks after getting the vaccine to travel. It takes time for your body to build protection after any vaccination.
  • Have you had any booster doses? Having all recommended COVID-19 vaccine doses, including boosters, increases your protection from serious illness.
  • Are you at increased risk for severe illness? Anyone can get COVID-19 . But older adults and people of any age with certain medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 .
  • Do you live with someone who's at increased risk for severe illness? If you get infected while traveling, you can spread the COVID-19 virus to the people you live with when you return, even if you don't have symptoms.
  • Does your home or destination have requirements or restrictions for travelers? Even if you've had all recommended vaccine doses, you must follow local, state and federal testing and travel rules.

Check local requirements, restrictions and situations

Some state, local and territorial governments have requirements, such as requiring people to wear masks, get tested, be vaccinated or stay isolated for a period of time after arrival. Before you go, check for requirements at your destination and anywhere you might stop along the way.

Keep in mind these can change often and quickly depending on local conditions. It's also important to understand that the COVID-19 situation, such as the level of spread and presence of variants, varies in each country. Check back for updates as your trip gets closer.

Travel and testing

For vaccinated people.

If you have been fully vaccinated, the CDC states that you don't need to get tested before or after your trip within the U.S. or stay home (quarantine) after you return.

If you're planning to travel internationally outside the U.S., the CDC states you don't need to get tested before your trip unless it's required at your destination. Before arriving to the U.S., you need a negative test within the last day before your arrival or a record of recovery from COVID-19 in the last three months.

After you arrive in the U.S., the CDC recommends getting tested with a viral test 3 to 5 days after your trip. If you're traveling to the U.S. and you aren't a citizen, you need to be fully vaccinated and have proof of vaccination.

You don't need to quarantine when you arrive in the U.S. But check for any symptoms. Stay at home if you develop symptoms.

For unvaccinated people

Testing before and after travel can lower the risk of spreading the virus that causes COVID-19 . If you haven't been vaccinated, the CDC recommends getting a viral test within three days before your trip. Delay travel if you're waiting for test results. Keep a copy of your results with you when you travel.

Repeat the test 3 to 5 days after your trip. Stay home for five days after travel.

If at any point you test positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 , stay home. Stay at home and away from others if you develop symptoms. Follow public health recommendations.

Stay safe when you travel

In the U.S., you must wear a face mask on planes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation. The mask must fit snugly and cover both your mouth and nose.

Follow these steps to protect yourself and others when you travel:

  • Get vaccinated.
  • Keep distance between yourself and others (within about 6 feet, or 2 meters) when you're in indoor public spaces if you're not fully vaccinated. This is especially important if you have a higher risk of serious illness.
  • Avoid contact with anyone who is sick or has symptoms.
  • Avoid crowds and indoor places that have poor air flow (ventilation).
  • Don't touch frequently touched surfaces, such as handrails, elevator buttons and kiosks. If you must touch these surfaces, use hand sanitizer or wash your hands afterward.
  • Wear a face mask in indoor public spaces. The CDC recommends wearing the most protective mask possible that you'll wear regularly and that fits. If you are in an area with a high number of new COVID-19 cases, wear a mask in indoor public places and outdoors in crowded areas or when you're in close contact with people who aren't vaccinated.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • If soap and water aren't available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub your hands together until they feel dry.
  • Don't eat or drink on public transportation. That way you can keep your mask on the whole time.

Because of the high air flow and air filter efficiency on airplanes, most viruses such as the COVID-19 virus don't spread easily on flights. Wearing masks on planes has likely helped lower the risk of getting the COVID-19 virus on flights too.

However, air travel involves spending time in security lines and airport terminals, which can bring you in close contact with other people. Getting vaccinated and wearing a mask when traveling can help protect you from COVID-19 while traveling.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has increased cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces and equipment, including bins, at screening checkpoints. TSA has also made changes to the screening process:

  • Travelers must wear masks during screening. However, TSA employees may ask travelers to adjust masks for identification purposes.
  • Travelers should keep a distance of 6 feet apart from other travelers when possible.
  • Instead of handing boarding passes to TSA officers, travelers should place passes (paper or electronic) directly on the scanner and then hold them up for inspection.
  • Each traveler may have one container of hand sanitizer up to 12 ounces (about 350 milliliters) in a carry-on bag. These containers will need to be taken out for screening.
  • Personal items such as keys, wallets and phones should be placed in carry-on bags instead of bins. This reduces the handling of these items during screening.
  • Food items should be carried in a plastic bag and placed in a bin for screening. Separating food from carry-on bags lessens the likelihood that screeners will need to open bags for inspection.

Be sure to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds directly before and after going through screening.

Public transportation

If you travel by bus or train and you aren't vaccinated, be aware that sitting or standing within 6 feet (2 meters) of others for a long period can put you at higher risk of getting or spreading COVID-19 . Follow the precautions described above for protecting yourself during travel.

Even if you fly, you may need transportation once you arrive at your destination. You can search car rental options and their cleaning policies on the internet. If you plan to stay at a hotel, check into shuttle service availability.

If you'll be using public transportation and you aren't vaccinated, continue physical distancing and wearing a mask after reaching your destination.

Hotels and other lodging

The hotel industry knows that travelers are concerned about COVID-19 and safety. Check any major hotel's website for information about how it's protecting guests and staff. Some best practices include:

  • Enhanced cleaning procedures
  • Physical distancing recommendations indoors for people who aren't vaccinated
  • Mask-wearing and regular hand-washing by staff
  • Mask-wearing indoors for guests in public places in areas that have high cases of COVID-19
  • Vaccine recommendations for staff
  • Isolation and testing guidelines for staff who've been exposed to COVID-19
  • Contactless payment
  • Set of rules in case a guest becomes ill, such as closing the room for cleaning and disinfecting
  • Indoor air quality measures, such as regular system and air filter maintenance, and suggestions to add air cleaners that can filter viruses and bacteria from the air

Vacation rentals, too, are enhancing their cleaning procedures. They're committed to following public health guidelines, such as using masks and gloves when cleaning, and building in a waiting period between guests.

Make a packing list

When it's time to pack for your trip, grab any medications you may need on your trip and these essential safe-travel supplies:

  • Alcohol-based hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol)
  • Disinfectant wipes (at least 70% alcohol)
  • Thermometer

Considerations for people at increased risk

Anyone can get very ill from the virus that causes COVID-19 . But older adults and people of any age with certain medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness. This may include people with cancer, serious heart problems and a weakened immune system. Getting the recommended COVID-19 vaccine and booster doses can help lower your risk of being severely ill from COVID-19 .

Travel increases your chance of getting and spreading COVID-19 . If you're unvaccinated, staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19 . If you must travel and aren't vaccinated, talk with your health care provider and ask about any additional precautions you may need to take.

Remember safety first

Even the most detailed and organized plans may need to be set aside when someone gets ill. Stay home if you or any of your travel companions:

  • Have signs or symptoms, are sick or think you have COVID-19
  • Are waiting for results of a COVID-19 test
  • Have been diagnosed with COVID-19
  • Have had close contact with someone with COVID-19 in the past five days and you're not up to date with your COVID-19 vaccines

If you've had close contact with someone with COVID-19 , get tested after at least five days. Wait to travel until you have a negative test. Wear a mask if you travel up to 10 days after you've had close contact with someone with COVID-19 .

US issues level 3 travel advisory to China amid safety concerns. Here's what to know

safe tourist bus

Are you thinking about traveling to China to visit or study abroad? The U.S. government suggests reconsidering your trip for now.

According to the U.S. Department of State , traveling to China is under a level 3 travel advisory , warning Americans to reconsider. The State Department has four warning levels. The fourth is “Do not travel.”

Is it safe to travel to China right now?

The U.S. is asking Americans to reconsider traveling to China due to various reasons, including concerns about health and safety, such as the prevalence of contagious diseases like COVID-19, as well as political tensions or security risks in certain regions.

As of April 12, there are some specific areas that the U.S. is asking people to reconsider travel to. Those areas include:

  • Mainland China due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, including exit bans and the risk of wrongful detentions.
  • Exercise increased caution when traveling to the Hong Kong SAR due to the arbitrary enforcement of local laws.
  • Reconsider travel to the Macau SAR due to a limited ability to provide emergency consular services.

Additionally, the U.S. government may issue travel advisories based on factors like civil unrest, natural disasters, or other hazards that could affect travelers' well-being.

Americans detained in China

Mark Swidan — a man from Houston, Texas — has been detained in China for over 10 years on drug charges. According to The Texas Tribune , Swidan was detained in China in 2012 while on a trip looking for materials for his home and business in Houston. Chinese authorities arrested him after his driver and translator were found in possession of drugs. The driver blamed Swidan, who is accused of trafficking and manufacturing methamphetamine.

A review of Swidan’s case said there were no drugs on him or in his hotel. Last year, the Republic of China’s Jiangmen Intermediate Court denied Swidan’s appeal and upheld his death penalty with a two-year suspended death sentence.

Other Americans considered wrongfully detained include Chinese American businessman Kai Li from Long Island, N.Y., and California pastor David Lin.

What countries have a Level 3 travel warning?

Metro declares public safety emergency, will install bus driver barriers

KABC logo

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Following the death of woman on the Metro B Line and a series of violent attacks on bus drivers, the transit agency's Board of Directors declared a public safety emergency Thursday while agreeing to procure safety barriers for bus drivers and taking other steps to enhance safety on the system.

Metro's Board of Directors unanimously adopted a recommendation to acquire barriers for hundreds of buses, in response to a "sudden, unexpected increased severity of assaults on operators." According to Metro, assaults on bus operators increased from 92 attacks in 2019 to 160 in 2023, and they continue to escalate this year.

Metro board member and Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Barger also introduced a motion, co-authored by several of her colleagues, to quickly explore solutions to bolster public safety, prompted by the death of 66-year- old Mirna Soza Arauz, who was stabbed in an apparently unprovoked attack earlier this week.

"Metro riders deserve to be safe on the system, and we will continue to do all that," Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who chairs the Board of Directors, said during Thursday's meeting. "We can keep not only our riders, but also our operators, safe, and I know that as a board, we will step up to this challenge because that's what frankly the people of Los Angeles deserve."

Barger said her motion calls for the agency to secure station gate entrances and exits, analyze data on violent crimes -- including those by reoffenders -- occurring on the system, and speed up pilot solutions at some of the most "challenging" stations. The motion was co-authored by Supervisors Janice Hahn and Hilda Solis, as well as L.A. City Council President Paul Krekorian, Inglewood Mayor James Butts and Glendale City Councilman Ara Najarian.

Among other measures the Board of Directors called for were quickly increasing security cameras, implementing facial recognition technology, and using other technology. The agency may also look into ways of banning problematic individuals from Metro altogether.

"We have received reports highlighting improvements since last year on crime stats and over other key areas," Barger said. "But the reality is that we are fighting a battle with one hand tied behind our back."

safe tourist bus

At one point, Barger said she didn't feel safe riding Metro by herself.

"I hate to say it, I will not ride our transit system by myself," Barger said.

While there was overall agreement to explore as many options as possible to improve Metro's safety, there was disagreement as to how to best get there.

Supervisor Lindsey Horvath was critical of Metro's policing contracts with the Los Angeles Police Department, Long Beach Police Department and L.A. County Sheriff's Department. She suggested that the agencies have not been forthcoming about how they've improved their approach to deploying their officers across the transit system.

Butts said he was a proponent of implementing more security technology across the system.

Supervisor Holly Mitchell said the agency needs to keep the broader context in mind while discussing public safety and not commit to "knee jerk reactions."

The Board of Directors is expected to hear more about potential public safety measures within 60 days.

Subscriber only, crime and public safety | why do buses stop at railroad tracks if trains haven’t used them in years.

safe tourist bus

Q. Dear Honk: There is a defunct railroad line that has been shut down for many years. It runs parallel to Bastanchury Road in Fullerton. The crossing gates have been removed, as well as all of the signs, except for one that states that the tracks are out of service. In spite of all this, school buses continue to stop at the tracks. Does California law mandate that school buses must stop at out-of-use tracks, when there is no chance of being hit by a train?

– Bob Bergstrom, Fullerton

A. Sometimes, yes.

A state law is in play for buses, trucks with employees other than those in the cab, and some commercial trucks holding hazardous materials.

“A school bus is required to stop unless specific signs exempt the bus from stopping that must be posted,” said Sgt. Jeffrey Beaty , of your town’s Traffic Bureau in the Police Department.

And the special signs require jumping through hoops to get them.

Of course, it is all about safety.

The driver of affected vehicles must stop 15 to 50 feet from the tracks, look both ways and listen. Some such vehicles, of course, wouldn’t be able to stop real fast.

“The law is ensuring that they are crossing the tracks in a safe manner,” the sergeant said in an email. “If a busload of people is hit by a train, the casualties could be devastating. The same can be said for hazardous materials that could cause an environmental disaster or potentially injure or kill someone close enough to the spill.”

Why is it so difficult to get the special signs installed? Honk tried to get an answer from state officials, but so far has failed to get one. If he does, he will return with an answer.

Q. We recently received a Notice of Delinquent Renewal for our license plates and smog check on our car. No prior notice was sent. This delinquent notice mentioned a penalty of $77. When we went to AAA and paid the fees, including the fine, we were told by the clerk that the Department of Motor Vehicles says it is not responsible for letting us know when our registration tag expired! In our experience, the DMV has been sending us notices in advance for 60-plus years! We have since talked with several friends who only discovered they were delinquent when they looked at their rear license plates and saw that the registration tags had expired – one was late by more than a year! They had not received any notice from the DMV. None of us has seen or heard anything about a change in DMV policy.

– Ginny and Wylie Carlyle, Irvine

A. Under the law, “the DMV is legally required to send renewal notices at least 60 days prior to the date the registration fees are due,” Ronald Ongtoaboc , a DMV spokesman, told Honk in an email.

But …

In the end, vehicle owners are still responsible to keep current their registrations, he said, “whether or not they received a notice.”

Ongtoaboc suggested ensuring the mailing address is up to date with the DMV, and he mentioned that Californians can sign up for email notices instead of paper ones.

A Honk daughter realized her driver’s license was expired only when it was rejected for ID at a doctor’s office. She immediately renewed it online.

Kind of the same drill – the responsibility is the motorist’s.

“The legal requirement to send a driver’s license (DL) renewal notice pertains only if a knowledge test is required, however the DMV currently sends renewal notices to all customers 90 days prior to the DL expiration date regardless of whether a test is required,” Ongtoaboc said.

HONKIN’ FACT: To offset the construction of its toll roads, which include the 241 and the 73, the Transportation Corridor Agencies has set aside 2,000 acres in 17 chunks in Orange County that are to forever remain nature. One of those, the 23-acre Live Oak Plaza Conservation Area near Trabuco Canyon, is getting weeded this month by cattle from 5 Bar Beef, an Orange County ranch, to, among other things, protect against a wildfire.

To ask Honk questions, reach him at [email protected]. He only answers those that are published. To see Honk online: ocregister.com/tag/honk . Twitter: @OCRegisterHonk

The MBTA increases frequency on commuter rail lines, subways, buses and ferries

Dozens of passengers walk along on a train platform as an MBTA commuter rail train departs the station.

The MBTA unveiled its spring schedules on Thursday, which include more frequent service on commuter rail lines and the resumption of seasonal service on regional ferries and the CapeFLYER train. The agency increased service on many of its subway lines and bus routes earlier this month.

On the commuter rail, frequency on the Fairmount Line will increase from every 45 to every 30 minutes, including new weekend service.

In collaboration with the city of Worcester, the MBTA will reintroduce the morning express train, departing Union Station at 7:40 a.m. and arriving at South Station in downtown Boston at 8:45 a.m. The trip will also include stops at Framingham and Lansdowne.

The transit agency also announced station improvements. The Readville lower platform will reopen to riders, offering more transfer options for the Franklin, Foxboro, Providence, Stoughton and Fairmount commuter rail lines. And after three years, service will resume from the South Attleboro Station. Commuter rail service there was suspended in February 2021 due to significant deterioration of the pedestrian overpass, which was demolished last year.

The popular CapeFLYER, offering round-trip service between Boston and Cape Cod, will return for the season on Memorial Day weekend. The service runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until Labor Day.

And if you’re lucky enough to be able to take the ferry, beginning April 29 there will be increased service on the Winthrop/Quincy ferry line with three additional trips, and added direct Quincy-to-Boston service. The Hingham/Hull Ferry Weekend Service resumes May 25 and the Lynn Ferry will have 11 new weekend trips this season when it begins on Saturday, May 25. East Boston ferry service resumed April 1.

Subway lines and bus routes

Rapid transit service changes went into effect on subway lines earlier this month.

On the Red Line, improved track conditions have resulted in increased frequency. The MBTA said the speedier service has allowed for 24 additional daily trips.

Orange Line frequency during peak travel times has also improved, due to the addition of new trains available for service. That's resulted in 18 additional trips.

Blue Line service now includes more evening trips to meet demand, adding 22 more daily trips. Between 8 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., trains will now come every 8-10 minutes instead of every 12-13 minutes.

Green Line service has also improved due to increased demand and the hiring of additional operators. That includes speedier weekday service during peak hours on all Green Line branches. In addition, some routes now have increased frequency on weekends or added capacity due to more two-car trains. The MBTA said these changes have resulted in 82 more daily trips.

Bus service is also more frequent on several routes due to the hiring of more bus operators. That includes routes 7, 9, 21, 32, 47, 57, 111, 501, SL1 and SL3 during weekdays and weekends with increased Sunday service on Route 1.

Other changes include rerouting buses 83 and 91 around construction areas and adjusted schedules on routes 34 and 121 to more accurately reflect the service that is actually operating so that riders can rely on published bus schedules. The Route 120 schedule was also adjusted to align with changes to the Blue Line.

Cody Rhodes' family member breaks silence about tour bus fire ahead of WrestleMania

C ody Rhodes' family member has broken their silence following the WWE star's tour bus catching fire ahead of WrestleMania XL. Rhodes will be competing on both nights of The Show of Shows this year.

The RAW star won the Men's Royal Rumble match in January to earn a title match at WrestleMania. He will be teaming up with Seth Rollins to battle The Rock and Roman Reigns in a massive tag team match during Night 1. If The Bloodline win the match, they are free to interfere in the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match on Night 2 of WrestleMania XL. Ahead of the premium live event, Cody Rhodes announced that his tour bus caught fire but everyone is okay.

His wife, former WWE ring announcer, and AEW star Brandi Rhodes, took to social media today to react to the bus fire. She reposted her husband's post earlier today and noted that it was quite the curveball. You can check out Brandi Rhodes's reaction in her post below.

Former WWE writer believes Cody Rhodes will be unsuccessful at WrestleMania

Vince Russo believes WWE is setting Cody Rhodes up for a spectacular failure at WrestleMania XL this weekend.

Speaking on Sportskeeda Wrestling's Legion of RAW show, Russo suggested that the company could cheat Cody Rhodes out of a victory at WrestleMania once again. The Bloodline's Solo Sikoa interfered in his match against Roman Reigns last year and cost him his shot at the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship:

"Again, man, I'm telling you this all goes back to WWE games. You just don't know if Cody is being set up. This is a guy that left the WWE to go start the AEW. He did the Triple H with the sledgehammer in the throne and all that stuff. You just don't know with them, bro, you just don't know." [From 11:30 onwards]

Rhodes has won the Men's Royal Rumble match two years in a row now and is determined to dethrone The Tribal Chief at WrestleMania XL. It will be interesting to see if he can finally win the big one this weekend.

Is quantum computing an enabler for the decarbonisation of aviation.

Quantum challenge critical scenarios

It is still early days for quantum computing. Yet experts agree it is poised to play a key role in sectors ranging from secure communications to banking and aerospace. Quantum’s appeal lies in its ability to overcome computational bottlenecks.

Airbus’ purpose is to pioneer sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world. Although still in development, quantum computers have potential in two areas that are key to realising that ambition: busting the design logjam caused by limits on current computational power in time for the next generation of aircraft, and boosting the efficiency of airline operations.

Here’s a roundup of some of the exciting quantum explorations Airbus is supporting.

Optimisation powered by quantum speed and accuracy

Trajectory optimisation

In the future, quantum algorithms could help optimise an aircraft’s trajectory in real time by taking air traffic restrictions and weather patterns into account. This has obvious safety, economic and ecological benefits.

Singapore Airshow 2018 - A350-1000

Flights operate in a dynamic environment affected by an intractably large number of variables, especially during climb-out. The speed and accuracy of calculations are key. Quantum algorithms may be able to outperform current high-performance computers for each.

To this end, in 2023 Airbus’ Silicon Valley innovation centre Acubed carried out a study into quantum trajectory optimisation .

Efficient cargo loading

Loading of humanitarian goods on an Airbus A330neo test aircraft at Vatry, France

Loading of humanitarian goods on an Airbus A330neo test aircraft at Vatry, France

Half of global airfreight travels onboard passenger flights. Filling cargo containers and then fitting them into the hold of a jetliner is like a giant game of Tetris. Space is at a premium, and the loading of each container must be just so. If the overall centre of gravity in the hold is off, the aircraft will burn more fuel. If the cargo is stacked too far to the left, the left-hand engine has to work harder, consuming even more fuel.

Like trajectory optimisation, cargo loading is fraught with constraints. Quantum computers leverage the so-called  ‘knapsack problem’ to calculate an optimum solution for loading packages into cargo containers, and the containers into the hold. In 2022, Airbus performed a use case demonstrator using  IonQ’s quantum computer .

To give an idea of the challenge loadmasters face, organising just 20 containers each stuffed with 30 packages in the hold produces a ‘solution space’ – the set of all solutions to a given problem – that exceeds the total number of particles in the universe. No existing computer or analytic solution can solve that puzzle accurately.

Mimicking nature: What happens when molecules collide?

Fuel cell simulation

Hydrogen-powered aircraft produce no carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide emissions during flight. They release only water vapour into the atmosphere.

There are two options for designing hydrogen propulsion systems: burning the gas directly in a turbine engine; or installing fuel cells which use hydrogen to create electricity through electrolysis.

ZEROe Fuel Cell Engine Model - Reveal

Airbus has joined forces with the automotive sector to advance fuel cell development for aeronautic applications. However, the cells must be lightweight as well as powerful enough to get a plane off the ground.

This combination relies on some complex chemistry. Electrolysis requires a catalyst to get going. Platinum is particularly suitable for this purpose, yet relatively expensive. The alternative is to create alloys – platinum with cobalt or nickel, for example – which also show a higher beginning-of-life performance than pure platinum. However, lab testing these alloys can be an expensive task.

Instead, alongside colleagues at BMW Group, Airbus researchers have  shown for the first time that quantum computing can perform atomic-level reaction modelling. Harnessing quantum’s exponential power that is beyond the reach of today’s computers, engineers can model the relative catalytic behaviour of each alloy. Their observations contribute to propulsion and design choices that will one day have a significant, favourable impact on aerospace’s carbon footprint.

Computational fluid dynamics: Where maths, physics and computer science intersect

The first port of call when designing a new aircraft is often  computational fluid dynamics , or CFD. This sophisticated digital simulation of airflow around an airframe informs its shape and aerodynamic efficiency. Today, CFD is performed by energy-intensive, high-performance computers (HPC) and it has become a bottleneck in the aircraft design cycle as HPCs reach their maximum processing power.

Onera DLR partnership 01

Airbus has signed a partnership with two leading European Research facilities, ONERA (French Aerospace Research Center) and DLR (German Aerospace Center) during an official ceremony at Paris Air Show.

Quantum computing is able to operate on a far larger canvas, or mesh, permitting CFD calculations to be performed at an exponentially higher scale. It has the potential to break the design bottleneck  for future aircraft.

CFD is an area under study in the  Quantum Mobility Quest and through  EQUALITY , a European consortium which counts Airbus as a member. The consortium is dedicated to developing quantum algorithms in order to solve a set of ‘paradigmatic’ industry problems.

As these examples show, quantum computing clearly has the potential to support aviation on its decarbonisation journey.

Airbus and the BMW Group both recognise quantum’s promise. The companies joined forces in 2023 to launch the  Quantum Mobility Quest . The Quest’s aim is to team up with leading players to accelerate and mature quantum solutions that could one day help the industry solve its most complex challenges.
