Capri day trip or stay over?

My husband and I are staying in Positano for a week and are trying to decide if we should stay for one night in Capri before transferring back to Naples to leave, or if it is best to just take a boat day trip there that takes us around the grottos and let's us see the island for 3.5 hours. Any advice is appreciated!

My husband and I recently returned from a 4 night stay in Capri, so my vote would be to stay overnight. The center (Piazza Umberto) of Capri has a different feel once the sun goes down, the day trippers leave, and the locals come out in their chic attire to go clubbing and stroll the town center. During the day, you could first go to Ana Capri, stroll unhurriedly through the lovely town and small shops over to St Michael's Church to see the tiled floor, take the chairlift up Monte Solaro to see the amazing views, and tour Villa San Michele with its pleasant gardens and gorgeous views of the harbor. Have a leisurely dinner, wake up early the next day for a boat tour around the island and to see the Blue Grotto before it gets too hot and too crowded. If you just go for a few hours on one day to Capri, I think you would get a totally different feel for this breathtaking island.

Just a personal opinion but, given the option, I would stay over. The best way to see Capri without hordes of tourists on day trips is to spend the night and enjoy the peaceful evening and early morning.

Ilana, let us know what you decide to do. We plan on going to Italy next October and I was wondering if we should stay on the island as well. Hope you have a great trip! We need a "like" button :) thanks for the previous responses from Aloharoberts and Nancy.

A couple of years ago we did a day trip to Capri from Sorrento. Knowing what I know now, I would have opted to stay over one night. A day trip is hemmed in by the ferry schedule. We discovered that the last ferry back to Sorrento left earlier than we had anticipated. I'm remembering 5 or 6 in the afternoon. Actually, we never even considered that might be an issue. We had to leave plenty of time for getting back down to the marina. There was a lot we had no time to see, and the feeling of being rushed was not good.

I'd vote for an overnight stay as well. We booked two nights on the island a few years ago, and it's indeed well worth being there in the evenings and early mornings before the day-trippers descend. We didn't do any boats trips as there was plenty to do on the island itself, and especially so if you're willing to do some hiking away from the busy piazzas during the day. Views from some of the high points are wonderful.

Consider Anacapri as well, if staying over.

HOW TO GET TO CAPRI

So, how do you get to Capri ? If you’re making the day trip on your own, you’ll have to plan the transfers to and from the island. The only way to arrive in Capri is by sea , so you’ll have to take a ferry regardless of where you’re coming from. However, you might also need to take a train or bus to get to the ferry station.

Let’s see more in detail how to make the journey from the major cities in the area.

Day Trip from Sorrento to Capri

Sorrento is a great departure point to visit Capri , as the ferries depart from its port , Marina Piccola, almost every half hour in the summer months. The journey takes no longer than 30 minutes, and tickets cost around 25€ each way.

Day Trip from Positano to Capri

Coming from Positano instead? Then the ferry journey is also fairly simple , as during the season there are quite a few daily crossings between the town and the island. The trip takes 30-40 minutes, and tickets cost approximately 25€.

Day Trip from Amalfi to Capri

From Amalfi (Amalfi Coast) to Capri there are also direct ferry crossings during the season, and although they’re not as frequent as in Positano, you can expect 4 to 5 ferries a day. The journey takes 50 minutes and tickets cost anywhere between 15€ and 25€.

Day Trip from Naples to Capri

Naples also has direct ferries to Capri . The trip takes around 50 minutes, and the standard price is also 25€, although you can find cheaper tickets if you’re going on the slow boat, or pricier ones depending on the season or time of day.

Day Trip from Rome to Capri

Rome is the farthest away from Capri, so the trip requires a little bit more planning. You’ll first have to make your way to Sorrento , and then catch the ferry to the island from there. You can easily get into the coastal town with the Circumvesuviana train, which takes a little over an hour to make the journey and costs 5€ each way.

Image of Capri's Marina Grande Harbor, with tens of vessels moored, a parking lot to the left, and the island's houses in the background

Marina Grande will be your first stop on the island, as it’s where the ferry arrives, so it’s a great starting point for your Capri visit . The Marina Grande features colorful houses and very picturesque fishing boats by the beach, honoring its past as a thriving fishing village.

The harbor and village are sheltered from the elements in a beautiful natural bay and offer a myriad of cafés, restaurants, and boutiques to shop around.

Take a Boat Tour of Capri

If you’re visiting independently, I still suggest you book a little boat tour around the island as I did. It’s one of the most enjoyable things to do in Capri, Italy.

Have a Spritz at Piazzetta

Piazzetta is often referred to as the world’s living room, as it’s the heart of Capri’s social life. It’s where everything happens , and where anyone who wants to see or be seen is, including the celebrities who vacation on the island.

Image of Piazzetta, Capri's main square, featuring restaurant seating areas and a yellow building in the back

While nowadays the island’s social life revolves around it , La Piazzetta has always been the center of activity in Capri as it served as a major market square before becoming a place to socialize with a coffee or drink.

The 17th-century Church of Santo Stefano, the astounding Clock Tower, and the cafes on the square’s corners are the main attractions at Piazzetta, besides the people you may get to spot there.

It’s the island’s ultimate spot for an authentic Italian aperitivo , so grab a table at one of the charming cafes, and sip on your spritz as you people-watchon the world’s most glamorous square.

To get to Piazzetta, whose official name is Piazza Umberto I, you can either walk or take the cable car from Marina Grande . I recommend the latter option, as you’ll be granted amazing views of the island as you go up.

Soak Up the Views at the Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto)

A woman posing in a viewpoint in Capri, with the rugged coastline, rock formations and the sea in the background

Giardini di Augusto, also known as Krupp Gardens, are botanical gardens strategically located high up on the island , boasting incredible views. The panoramic gardens are a masterpiece on their own though, and absolutely worth a visit.

The gardens are designed on level terraces that overlook the sea , each of them featuring a specific kind of plant or flower. Besides housing all of Capri’s native flora, the giardini have all sorts of colorful flowers and splendid, lush vegetation that makes it seem an oasis.

There are not only plants, though, but sculptures and historic monuments ; paired with the views, it becomes one of the absolutely unmissable attractions in Capri .

Take a Photo of Via Krupp

Image of Via Krupp seen from above, an unmissable attraction to enjoy during a day trip to Capri

Via Krupp connects the Augustus Gardens with Marina Piccola , meandering on the cliffside and covering close to 328 feet (100 meters) of elevation difference. It was built by German Alfred Krupp , who wanted an easier access to his home up the hill from the port.

The road is now closed, but it’s still quite a sight to be seen, with its rounded turns and the vibrant blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the background, and an iconic image of the island of Capri .

After you’re done visiting the Krupp Gardens, make sure you make a stop to snap a picture of the road!

Be Mesmerized by Via Tragara and Belvedere Tragara

A woman posing in the very narrow Vis Tragari, and in the background there's the Mediterranean Sea, and the rugged coastline of Capri island

Via Tragara is a very historic and incredibly scenic pathway, considered one of the most beautiful promenades in Capri. At times it’s fringed by luxurious villas, hidden behind concrete or vegetation walls, and it takes you through archways and narrow alleys, offering a very pretty walk that ends with incredible views of the Faraglioni .

Besides spotting the famous rocks that emerge from the sea, you’ll catch sight of part of the Amalfi Coast in the distance, and the island’s cliffs and bay as you stand in Belvedere Tragara , the lookout at the end of the Via . Even if you’re spending one day on Capri, I recommend you check it out.

Head to Anacapri

There are two towns on the island, Capri Town and Anacapri . Anacapri is relatively small, and it’s situated on an elevated position, higher than Capri town, which grants it beautiful, broad views of the bay and the rest of the island.

Besides the scenery, it prides itself in being home to a few important historic sites , like Villa San Michele, which is the second reason to visit the town. Contrasting Capri’s main town, with its bustle and tourist-focused eateries and boutiques, Anacapri is much more tranquil as it’s mostly a residential area.

Walking around Anacapri is the best way to explore it, so don’t worry about getting lost and wander confidently on its charming streets.

While there is a zigzagging road that connects Anacapri with the port, back in the day it was only reachable by a staircase of over 900 steps that still exists today.

Unless you’re up for the workout, to get to Anacapri you’ll either need to take the bus or a taxi . To take the bus, you’ll have to walk back to the bus station which is steps away from Piazzetta. The journey takes around 15 minutes.

If You Still Have Time: Take the Chairlift to Mount Solaro or…

Mount Solaro is Capri’s highest point, located over 1900 feet above sea level. Understandably, it’s where you’ll get the most breathtaking views of the island .

A lovely terrace with sunchairs and a restaurant will greet you at the top, so you can sit with a refreshing drink to enjoy the sweeping panorama before you, and relax after a day of explorations.

To get there you’ll have to take the chairlift from Anacapri . It takes less than 15 minutes to make the journey, and the roundtrip tickets cost around 15€.

Visit Villa San Michele

Villa San Michele is Anacapri’s gem . Built in the early 1900s, it’s the dream home of Axel Munthe, a Swedish physician based in Capri who designed the villa to resemble a Greek temple . Prioritizing its luminosity, he created a very open house that faces the ocean and magnificently overlooks the island’s bay.

Besides its beautiful architecture, Villa San Michele boasts a fantastic art and sculpture collection , mostly of Egyptian and Etruscan origin, and hosts cultural events in the summer. Concerts, film festivals, and literary encounters are some of the events that take place every year.

To head back to Marina Grande to catch the ferry, you can take the bus or a taxi . Buses are often very crowded in the late afternoon and it can be hard to get in from the stop in Piazza Vittoria. Instead, you can walk to the previous stop at Viale Tommaso de Tommaso .

ONE DAY IN CAPRI FAQ

Yes, Capri can definitely be visited in one day, as it’s relatively small.

Absolutely yes. Capri is a gorgeous island on the Naples Bay and offers many natural attractions along with man-made landmarks worth checking out.

It’s definitely possible to get to Capri and explore it on your own.

It entirely depends on your budget and interests. There is no roof to how much you can spend, especially if you go shopping at the high-end boutiques and dine in the top restaurants, but you can enjoy a day in Capri for around $120 including round-trip transfers from the mainland, a boat trip on the island, and meals. Much less if you take snacks with you and skip the tour!

Take the public ferry to get there, use public transportation on the island or, even better, walk, and pack your food or have a light lunch instead of eating at a restaurant. Boat tours can cost as little as $20, so that’s highly recommended even if you’re on a budget.

Capri Day Trip - A One-Day Itinerary

A one-day itinerary for visiting Capri

Are you staying in Sorrento or Naples and want to check off one more item on your bucket list with a Capri day trip ? Or perhaps your Mediterranean cruise ship has dropped anchor for 24 hours in the Bay of Naples and you have limited free time to explore ? This Capri itinerary is exactly what you need to see the best of the island—the cafes, the views of Capri, the famous Blue Grotto, and more—all in a quick day trip!

Is it better to visit Capri on your own or with a group tour?

Joining a small group tour of Capri is often a more affordable option than exploring the island on your own. Capri tours from Sorrento begin at about 75 euros per person for a full-day tour. Compare this to travel to Capri on your own, where the high-speed ferry ticket alone can set you back as much as 40 euros per person.

Here are a number of options for a day trip to Capri:

Boat tours from Sorrento to Capri Boat tours from Positano to Capri

Tips for visiting Capri in one day on your own

9:00 a.m. - Capri boat tour and Blue Grotto

11:30 a.m.- Chairlift to the top of Mount Solaro

12:30 p.m. - Villa San Michele

3:00 p.m. - In and around Capri's Piazzetta

5:00 p.m. - Return to port

A note of caution : During the months of July and August, the heat and crowds can be oppressive and you may find this day trip to Capri itinerary too strenuous. An alternative is to choose the most interesting sights and activities ahead of time and don't try to fit them all into one day. On the warmest summer days, the best option is to visit the Piazzetta early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and spend the rest of the day out on the water or at the beach.

9:00 am - Boat tour

Try to arrive on Capri as early as possible and head first to the private jetty in Marina Grande , which is the departure point for boat tours to the Blue Grotto (on the same dock where most ferries from the mainland arrive). Purchase a ticket for the Capri boat tour including a visit to the Blue Grotto . You can take either the complete circle tour , which includes the thrill of sailing through the arch in the dramatic Faraglioni rock formations , or the shorter tour, which only sails as far as the Blue Grotto and back. We suggest you opt for the full circle tour!

Day trip to Capri: insider tip After visiting the Blue Grotto, ask the skipper to let you off at the stairs next to the grotto instead of taking the boat back to Marina Grande. Climb the stairs to the top and take the bus to Anacapri so you don't waste time in the long line at the bus terminal in Marina Grande.

11:30 am - Monte Solaro

Upon your return to Marina Grande , board a bus to Anacapri (a 20 minute ride). From here, take the chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro .

12:30 pm - Villa San Michele

Your day trip to Capri has probably made you work up an appetite by now, so you can either stop for lunch in one of Anacapri's restaurants or grab a quick snack and head straight to Villa San Michele . The villa was originally a private residence and is now a museum open to the public. It was formerly the home of 19th-century Swedish writer and physician Axel Munthe and it boasts one of the island's most panoramic views.

How much time do I need to plan for to see the highlights on Capri?

To take a quick peek at the Piazzetta and Anacapri, you'll need at least 4 hours; plan on at least 7 hours if you'd also like to take a boat tour around the island. For a deep dive into all the sights and monuments on the island, you need to plan on at least three days.

You can always purchase ferry tickets directly at the port if there are still tickets available, but during the summer months of July and August and on the weekend, it's a good idea to book your tickets in advance. One day in Capri; the ultimate guide to plan your day trip

Spending at least one day in Capri should not be missing from your itinerary when visiting the Gulf of Naples or the Amalfi Coast in Italy! This small island is most famous for its designer boutiques , upscale hotels and the hundreds of yachts surrounding it from the rich and famous visiting it each year. Most people come here to shop, to see and to be seen. But that is not what attracted me to this little Italian paradise.

Capri has an awe-inspiring natural beauty with a rugged coastline , impressive mountain s and countless bougainvillea flowers . It is home to beautiful Roman villas and gardens you can visit. So beside cute boutiques and lovely restaurants, I was eager to explore more of this dreamy island, even it was just for a day trip.

Why you should visit Capri?

Capri has a lot to offer for everyone . If you like shopping, you will find both cute souvenir stores as exclusive designer boutiques. There is a wide range of cute restaurants and bars, so you will not be hungry or thirsty either. Nature lovers will also love this island, since you can do several hikes along the coastline or to the top of its highest mountain; Monte Solaro. Several villas, archaeological sites and museums can be visited and for those who prefer to relax; yes there are beaches as well! But are you sure that is the way you want to spend your one day in Capri at the beach?

Where is Capri & how can you get there?

Capri is situated on the south side of the Gulf of Naples in the Campania region of Italy, about 5 kilometers from the main land. The only way to get there is by boat. Most people arrive from Naples or Sorrento. But you can also reach Capri from other islands, should you be island hopping from Ischia or Procida.

Day trips from Amalfi or Positano are often organized. But if you are planning to go to Capri yourself, I advise to book a ferry ticket in advance via Alilauro or Traghettilines . This way you are sure having a spot, especially during high season and you can book a ticket early in the morning, before the crowds arrive and book the last ferry back to make the most out of your day!

view from Piazzetta di Capri

When should you go there?

The best time to go on a day trip to Capri is spring and autumn (May/June and September/October preferably). Temperatures are bearable and the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet. From April to June you will be able to enjoy the flowers the most. Summers are crowded and hot.

How to make the most of your one day in Capri?

If you want to make the most of your one day in Capri, you need to be prepared! So make a list of the places you want to visit and book your ferry tickets in advance and make sure to arrive early, so you have a lot of time to spend during the day on this beautiful island! Once you arrive on the island, buy a ticket for the funicolare (2€). This is a small railway taking you up to the town of Capri. The ticket office is located next to the ticket booths of the ferries. Trust me, you do not want to walk all the way up to town. (funicolare starts to go up at 6.15 am)

Once you are up, you can decide if you want to explore the surroundings of Capri first or immediately take the bus to Anacapri or other places on the island. I advise to buy your bus tickets first, also if you prefer to explore the town of Capri first. So you do not have to stand in line for a ticket later. The line for the bus itself will be long enough already!

Also check the opening hours to the places you want to visit first. I first went to take some photos in town early in the morning and then went to the first place I wanted to visit at opening time. I had it all to myself!

What to see and do on a day trip to Capri?

Giardini di augusto.

This was the first place I wanted to see when I arrived in Capri. So after taking photos in a still empty Capri town early in the morning, I strolled down the Via Vittorio Emanuele and the Via Federico Serena, turning right to the Via Matteotti to find the garden with its amazing terrace overlooking the impressive Faraglioni rock formations in the sea and Via Krupp. I could sit here forever admiring the sweeping views! Opening hours: 9.00 – 19.30 – entrance: 1€

Giardini di Augusto view on Faraglioni Capri

A historic hairpin turn paved footpath leading towards Marina Piccola. It is currently closed due to the danger of falling rocks, but I bet it is quite fun to walk down to the picturesque little harbor once they secured the place again.

Capri Via Krupp

Via Pizzolungo

If you are into nature and breathtaking panoramas, you can walk along the Via Pizzolungo. This little hike starts at the Belvedere di Tragara and will offer fantastic coastal views on the Faraglioni. The path is often surrounded by trees, so you can take advantage of the shade!

Capri bougainvillea

Anacapri is a small town on the other side of Monte Solaro where you will find a more local vibe with restaurants and cute souvenir shops. I loved the calmer vibe here and would have loved to explore more. I think it is a nice area to stay. So if I ever return and decide to stay a bit longer at Capri, I think I would choose a hotel at this side of the island.

Villa San Michele

This beautiful villa was built on the ruins of an ancient Chapel dedicated to San Michele at the end of the 19th century by the Swedish physician and author Axel Munthe. Munthe collected various objects like fragments of sarcophaguses, busts, marble, columns and even a Greek tomb and granite sphinx looking over a fantastic view of Capri can be found here. Opening hours: 9.00 – 17.00 – entrance: 10€

Boat tour around the island & Grotta Azzurra

A private boat excursion around the island is also a must! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! The larger tourist boats are unable to get near enough to the cliffs to explore the caves. Gianni’s Boats ‘ traditional gozzo boats do! This business provides excellent value for money. You can sample Gianni’s mother’s homemade limoncello, depending on what tour option you choose (I took the 3-hour tour of the island). It was, without a doubt, the greatest limoncello I’d ever had! On this journey, you can also visit the Grotta Azzurra if the sea level permits. I had done it before as a child, but the sea level was too high to enter, so I skipped it.

I loved this tour and I had the most wonderful “captain” named Marco. He even made me stand on a rocky outcropping in the sea to shoot photos and he had the perfect selection of Italian tunes to spice up the journey. I got tears in my eyes from pure joy while we were passing through the Faraglioni arch! The vistas of these magnificent rock formations, the wind in my hair and the sound of “That’s Amore” playing in the background gave me goosebumps! If you’re traveling alone, don’t hesitate to book this tour. Because you won’t be able to use a tripod on the boat (it will fall over due to the waves), the “captain” will undoubtedly make an effort to assist you with photographs. I also mounted my GoPro to the mast of the boat, which was a great method to snap images and footage!

Additional day trip activities in Capri

 • Sentiero dei Fortini: I was not able to do this hike myself, but if you are into a longer coastal hike that takes you from fort to fort, you could do this hike. But the views of the east side of the island are more beautiful.
 • Marina Piccola : A charming little harbor and beach.
 • Villa Jovis : Ruins of a Roman palace built by emperor Tiberius.
 • Villa Lysis : This villa is built by industrialist and poet Jacques d’Adelswärd-Fersen in 1905. You can visit this villa’s interior and gardens and enjoy the views!

Where to eat in Capri?

Eating and drinking can be quite expensive at Capri. But I found the most charming restaurant at Anacapri; Il Saraceno ! It is situated at the Via Trieste e Trento next to the Chiesa di Santa Sofia. You cannot miss it since it is the only terrace on this small square. It offers local cuisine and the elderly man working here was super sweet, handling it all on its own! Prices were very reasonable here!

I also drank a very good Limoncello Spritz at Peppino Buonocore . It is situated right across the ferry ticket office at the harbor. It was the ideal spot to wait for the traghetto to arrive.

Book a hotel for your day trip to Capri

I visited Capri from Sorrento and stayed at Hotel Rivage , which was perfectly located at the edge of the city center. Another hotel I stayed at in Sorrento is Hotel Antiche Mura . This fancier hotel is located right in the city center of Sorrento, next to the Valley of the Mills. It has a beautiful pool surrounded by lemon trees. You can read more about these hotels in my blog post about the Amalfi Coast .

Capri Day Trip - A One Day Itinerary

A day devoted to Capri's highlights

Capri Day Trip - A One Day Itinerary

A One Day Itinerary for Visiting Capri from Morning to Evening

Are you planning a day trip to Capri Italy , arriving in the morning and leaving the evening of the same day? We've put together this insider's itinerary of Capri island to help you plan the perfect day and visit the most important sights on a tight schedule.

9:00 a.m. - Capri Boat Tour and the Blue Grotto

11:30 a.m.- chairlift to the top of mount solaro, 12:30 p.m. - villa san michele, 3:00 p.m. - in and around capri's piazzetta, 5:00 p.m. - return to the port.

We strongly recommend planning at least one overnight stay , but if you just can't fit it in, follow our 8-hour tour for the best of the island...but come back for a longer stay next time!

Tour to Capri from Sorrento Tour to Capri from Positano and the Amalfi Coast
Shore excursions from Cruise Ships If your ship is docked in the Naples port, you can easily organize a day on Capri independently. The pier used by cruise ships is quite near Molo Beverello, where hydrofoils headed to Capri depart (view the map of the Naples port ). Once on Capri, it's very simple to get around by yourself.

A tip : during the high season months of July and August, Capri gets quite crowded and there can be long lines to board the hydrofoils and buses. We recommend purchasing a roundtrip ticket in the morning for the hydrofoil to save time on the return trip, and to plan your itinerary carefully, as the temperatures can soar during those months and you won't want to have to do too much walking.

Beat the heat : In July and August, the heat and crowds can make this itinerary too strenuous. Choose the most sights and activities you find most interesting ahead of time, but do not do them all in one day. On the hottest days in summer, visit La Piazzetta early in the morning or late in the afternoon, and relax the rest of the day on a boat out on the water or at the beach.

Try to reach Capri as early as you can in the morning to beat the crowds (see here for the schedules and prices of ferries to Capri Italy ). If you are interested in visiting the Blue Grotto , we suggest to do so first thing in the morning. At the Marina Grande port, you will find ticket offices for the Motoscafisti di Capri and Laser boat tour companies, which offer Capri island boat tours with a stop at the Blue Grotto.

Ticket price: 20 euros a person + 14 euros separate ticket for the Blue Grotto

Duration: about 2 hours

An Insider Tip After visiting the Blue Grotto, instead of taking the boat back to Marina Grande, ask the skipper to let you off at the stairs which go up the cliffside next to the grotto. At the top of the stairs, you can hop on the bus to Anacapri and avoid the long queue at the bus terminal in Marina Grande.

From Marina Grande, take the bus to Anacapri (check the timetable ). Get off at the last stop and take the chairlift to Mount Solaro , the highest point on the island with breathtaking views.

Chairlift ticket price: 12 euros roundtrip, 9 euros one way.

From here, you can either descend to the center of Capri, or stop at Anacapri to visit Villa San Michele .

From Piazza Vittoria, take the bus to Capri. If there is a long queue to board, walk down Viale Tommaso de Tommaso a few blocks in the direction from which the bus arrives, and board at one of the much less crowded stops before the Piazza.

capri day trip or stay

The bus will leave you just a few meters from Capri's famous Piazzetta ; you can stop for lunch in one of the restaurants in the town center or opt for a quick snack at a bar and continue your visit. From the Piazzetta, walk down Via Vittorio Emanuele to the Quisisana hotel. Continue downhill, turning right into the Gardens of Augustus . Here you can enjoy the sweeping view over Marina Piccola, Via Krupp, and the Faraglioni rock formations.

After snapping a few pictures, retrace your steps to the Quisisana and continue along Via Camerelle , lined with chic luxury boutiques. At the end of the road, if you have any energy left, you can follow Via Tragara to the Belvedere overlook facing the dramatic Faraglioni. Otherwise, take Via Fuorlovado and Via Le Botteghe back, checking out the design shops along the way.

Once you return to the Piazzetta, take the short funicular ride back to the port.

You can purchase an all-inclusive day trip package online that includes a boat tour of the island, funicular tickets, bus and chairlift tickets, and lunch at a local restaurant: Capri Day Tour Saturday and Sunday, you can join a group tour of Capri: Group Tour - Saturday Group Tour - Sunday In the summer months, avoiding the crowds and long lines by spending the day on the beach or at sea is a great idea. Perfect One Day In Capri Itinerary

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Feb 6, 2023 | Europe , Italy , Travel Tips

When most people think of Capri, they imagine a luxurious island getaway with pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters. While it is certainly that, Capri is also a fascinating place to explore with plenty of history and culture to discover.

If you’re only able to visit Capri for one day , here is an itinerary to help you make the most of your time in Capri.

Ready To Travel? Don't Go Without Travel Insurance.

Check Prices

In this guide, we’ll cover the best things to do in Capri, how to get to Capri, where to stay (if you decide to stay longer), what to eat, etc. By the end of this post, you’ll know exactly how to organize a perfect day in Capri.

Capri

How To Get To Capri

The island of Capri is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the southwest coast of Italy. The easiest way to get there is by ferry from Naples, Positano, or Sorrento.

If you’re taking the ferry from Naples, you’ll first need to get to the ferry terminal. The ferry from Naples to Capri takes around 45 minutes and tickets cost around EUR 20-30 per person, depending on the type of ferry you take.

If you’re taking the ferry from Sorrento, you’ll need to get to the ferry terminal. The ferry from Sorrento to Capri takes around 20 minutes and tickets cost between EUR 20-25 per person, depending on the type of ferry you take.

Finally, the last option is to take the ferry from Positano port. The ferry from Positano to Capri takes and costs around EUR 25 and takes about 30 minutes.

If you’re traveling to Capri during the summer, we suggest you book your tickets online in advance because ferry tickets can get sold out quickly.

 • Book a ferry from Naples to Capri
 • Book a ferry from Positano to Capri

How To Get Around Capri

Once you’re on the island, the best way to get around is on foot or by taking a taxi or bus. There are also a few funicular railways that will take you up to the towns and viewpoints.

Many people visit Capri by boat, either by taking a day trip from Naples or Sorrento or by renting their own boat for the day. This is a great way to see the island’s coastline and visit some of the more secluded beaches.

Alternatively, you can book a guided tour and join a group, or book a private boat in Capri.

What To Do In Capri

There is no shortage of things to do in Capri, but here are some of our top suggestions.

Capri

Take A Ride On The Funicular Up To Mont Solaro

The funiculars are a great way to get around Capri and are perfect for visitors who want to see the island’s highlights without having to walk.

There are three funiculars on the island – the Funicolare Centrale, the Funicolare di Montepertuso, and the Funicolare di Anacapri.

Mont Solaro is accessible from Anacapri, and the funicular is quite unique. In fact, you’ll be sitting in a swing all by yourself while you can enjoy the peace and quiet and admire the views.

Visit The Villa Jovis

The Villa Jovis is a magnificent Roman villa that was once the home of Emperor Tiberius. It’s located high on a cliff overlooking the sea and is a must-see for anyone visiting Capri.

The views from the villa are simply stunning, and it’s fascinating to explore the ruins and imagine what life must have been like for the Roman elite.

Go On A Boat Trip

One of the best ways to see Capri is from the water. There are plenty of boat tours available, or you can rent your own boat for the day. Alternatively, you can take a ferry to one of the nearby islands, such as Ischia or Procida.

During the boat trip, you can swim in the crystal-clear waters, sunbathe on the deck, and enjoy the stunning views. Some of the popular stops are the Blue Grotto, the Green Grotto, and the White Grotto.

Explore The Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto is a sea cave that’s illuminated by a natural light that makes the water inside appear to be a bright blue.

You can take a boat tour to the grotto but you’ll need to keep in mind that you might need to wait in a queue to access the cave as you’ll need to switch to a smaller boat to visit it.

Capri

Stroll Through The Streets Of Capri Town

Capri Town is the main town on the island of Capri and is a great place to wander around and explore. The streets are narrow and winding, and there are lots of small shops, cafes, and restaurants to check out.

Make sure to visit Piazzetta de Capri, which is the main square in Capri Town, and is a great place to people watch.

Capri

Go Shopping

Capri is a popular place for shopping, and you’ll find plenty of high-end designer stores selling clothes, shoes, and accessories. There are also lots of small boutiques selling handmade goods and souvenirs.

If you’re looking for something truly unique, make sure to visit the Capri Pearl Factory. Here you can watch the skilled artisans at work and even buy some of their beautiful creations.

That said, many people go to Capri to get handmade leather sandals, which are popular souvenirs. You’ll find plenty of sandal shops in Capri Town and around the island.

Where To Stay In Capri

If you’re visiting Capri for just one day, we recommend staying in Sorrento or Naples and doing a day trip to Capri from there. However, if you’re planning on spending more time on the island, there are plenty of accommodation options to choose from.

You’ll find hotels everywhere around the island, but mostly in Capri and Anacapri.

Want To Visit Capri?

Make sure to book a stay in one of the best hotels in Capri and Anacapri. Best Budget Hotel: Rest and Dream Capri Best mid-range hotel: Aquamarine Relaxing Capri Suites Best luxury hotel: Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco

Where To Eat In Capri

Capri is famous for its fresh seafood, and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from. If you’re looking for a romantic setting, we recommend Da Gelsomina.

Make sure to try some of the local specialties such as Caprese salad (a salad made with fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and basil), and limoncello (a lemon liqueur).

If you’re vegetarian, don’t worry – there are plenty of options for you too.

Caprese salad

Best Time To Visit Capri

The best time to visit Capri is in the spring or autumn when the temperatures are mild and the crowds are smaller. However, it’s also a popular destination for summer holidays, so it can be quite busy during peak season.

You can expect temperatures of around 25 degrees Celsius in the spring and autumn, and up to 30 degrees Celsius in the summer.

Capri Travel Tips

Below, you’ll find a few final Capri travel tips to help you make the most of your trip.

 • Capri is a small island, so it’s best to explore on foot.
 • Many of the streets are quite steep, so wear comfortable shoes.
 • Capri is a popular destination, so it can be quite crowded during peak season. If you want to avoid the crowds, we recommend visiting in the spring or autumn. Alternatively, instead of organizing a day trip to Capri, stay for one night or two. This way, you can enjoy the island in the early mornings and evenings when the daily visitors are gone.
 • The island is quite hilly, so be prepared for some uphill walking.
 • Capri is famous for its fresh seafood, so make sure to try some of the local specialties.
 • Capri is a popular place for shopping, so be sure to bring your credit card!
 • If you’re visiting Capri for just one day, we recommend staying in Sorrento or Naples.

Capri

Final Thoughts On Day Trips To Capri

If you’re looking for a beautiful and relaxing Italian island to visit, Capri is a great choice. There’s plenty to do on the island, from swimming in the crystal-clear waters to admiring the views from epic viewpoints.

You can easily explore Capri in one day, but we recommend staying longer if you can. This way, you’ll be able to make the most of Capri when the daily visitors are gone. It will give you the chance to appreciate what the island has to offer.

The Geographical Cure

One Day In Capri, Itinerary & Day Trip Guide

Nestled in the Bay of Naples, the island of Capri is one of the most beautiful places on planet earth.

It’s been a resort island and haven since ancient times. Its magnetic charm enchanted Roman emperors like Tiberius, who built lavish villas there.

You’ll be enchanted too. To help you discover the island’s magic, I’ve put together the perfect one day in Capri day trip itinerary.

view of the Fragalioni rocks from Capri

Overview Of Capri

Capri is part of southern Italy, near the Sorrentine peninsula.

Geographically, it’s an island divided into two parts, with a valley in between. There’s a big port at the mouth of the island, Marina Grande.

There are two towns, Anacapri and Capri Town. Capri Town is accessible via funicular, bus, or taxi. Anacapri sits above Capri and can be reached by bus or taxi.

People usually arrive in Capri from Naples or Sorrento. You can take the high speed boat, a slower boat, a private charter, or book a private transfer. (Nitty gritty details in the tips section at the end.)

On arrival, many people say “what’s the big deal.” This may reflect the fact Marina Grande is not very pretty and very touristy.

people on a boat tour going through an arch in the rocks

Well, the big deal is the natural beauty of the island itself!

A good way to see for yourself is to take boat ride around the island and look at it from the sea. Some guided day trip tours include this option or you can book a boat tour on your own.

>>> Click here to book a 2 hour boat tour around the island

It’s not easy to get around the island itself. In fact, perhaps the most convenient and efficient way is to is hire a driver and take a custom automobile.

They’re tweaked for the narrow roads and have the roof cut off. You can also rent scooters to get around or take the bus.

You’ll need to be prepared, psychologically, to share the island with other people.

Marina Grande

One Day In Capri Itinerary

There’s a lot to do in Capri with just one day. My itinerary is crafted with the active traveler in mind.

However, with limited time, you may need to be realistic about how much you can fit in. So, feel free to pick and choose from the array of activities I’ve outlined.

Your ferry will drop you off at Marina Grande. From there, make you way to either the Blue Grotto or Anacapri.

boats waiting to enter the Blue Grotto

Plan ahead and make a decision about visiting the renowned Blue Grotto.

Morning is the ideal time due to perfect lighting conditions. To enter, you’ll need to recline in your boat as the entrance is just 4 feet high.

Be prepared to dedicate a significant portion of your morning to this experience, as there can be a considerable wait. Inside, the visit lasts only 5 minutes, so keep that in mind when planning your day.

Blue Grotto, a top attraction to visit with one day in Capri

Yet, the grotto is a truly unique geographical phenomenon.

Sunlight penetrates through the cave and bounces off the limestone floor. It creates an otherworldly radiant blue that’s just mesmerizing.

You have to see it at low tide when the water is calm. If it’s high tide, you won’t be able to visit. You might have your visit abruptly cancelled. So, it’s a good idea to have backup plans.

Historians believe that Tiberius used the Blue Grotto as a private swimming pool and placed statues in there. Several of them are now in a museum in Anacapri.

Anacapri

If you skipped the Blue Grotto, start your one day in Capri in the town of Anacapri. Or head there when you’re done at the grotto.

Anacapri is Capri’s less visited town. Nonetheless, it’s quite pretty.

Piazza Vittoria is the main square. Via Orlandi is the main street and a great place to shop.

Narrow streets lined with whitewashed houses and colorful flowers create a charming ambiance as you stroll through the town.

Anacapri is renowned for its local crafts and artisan shops, offering up handcrafted ceramics, textiles, and other unique products.

sculptures in the Villa San Michele

You may want to visit the pretty Villa San Michele .

It was designed by Swedish doctor Axel Munthe. Munthe’s wanted a “Greek temple, with light light light everywhere.”

Today, the villa is a museum housing art and antiques — ancient relics, statues, and eclectic furnishings. You can walk through the atrium, mosaic floors, loggia, and chapel.

Replicas of iconic sculptures like Rome’s Spinario and Florence’s Putto with Dolphin adorn the villa. The garden features a wisteria-draped pergola, boasting stunning views.

view from the top of Mount Solaro, a must do on any one day in Capri itinerary

The next thing you’ll do is hop on a chairlift to head up to Mount Solaro. It departs from the Piazza Vittoria and takes about 10 minutes each way.

It’s very safe. The operators are excellent and are used to visitors that might be apprehensive.

It’s a surreal experience. You’re hovering above white sugar cube homes. As you ascend, it gets more and more quiet. All you hear is wind.

Once you get off the chair at the top, you’re 2,000 feet above sea level. There are a few terraces to visit to look out over the island. You’ll be dazzled with the best views on the island. You’ve probably seen the view in photos of Capri.

You can see the Fragalioni rocks. They’re limestone sea stacks. They’ve become iconic and a symbol of Capri. You can actually sail through the arch of one of them.

chairlift on Monte Solaro

According to the Odyssey , these were boulders that were hurled into the sea by the cyclops Polyphemus. According to Virgil, this is the place where the sirens once lived.

The rocks are so famous that they have names. Stella is the rock firmly affixed to the cliffside, flanked by its counterparts.

The middle rock is Faraglione di Mezzo. The one nearest to the expanse of the open sea is called Faraglione di Fuori or Scopolo.

After Mount Solaro, have lunch at Da Gelsomina . We loved the family-run restaurant. It was one of our best meals on our Amalfi Coast trip .

But if you’ve been to the Blue Grotto and are pressed for time, grab some food in Anacapri before moving on to Capri Town. Or pick up a panino to go.

Capri Town, a must see with one day in Capri

Capri Town is pretty small, but very beautiful and boasts some well known luxury hotels. The main square is Piazza Umberto I, also known as the “Piazzetta.”

The most iconic thing is the clock tower. You may recognize the design. It’s the same as the popular Capri Watch.

On a lookout point in the square, you will find a ceramic map of Capri. It shows the topography, landmarks, and coastline of the island.

You look out at Capri as the same time as you’re looking at a map of Capri. The views are stunning. You can see Mount Solaro.

street in Capri Town

Capri Town is a great place for high end shopping (or window shopping). You’ll find luxury brands on Via Vittoria Emanuele or Via Camerelle.

Marina Piccola

Less than a mile down the road is the Marina Piccola. It’s a 20-30 minute walk. Many of the boat tours depart from here.

There’s a little pebbled beach and some prestigious beach clubs. (Beaches are rather scarce in Capri.)

This particular area of Capri is associated with an ancient myth. In the Odyssey , that this is where the sirens sang their songs.

Gardens of Augustus

If instead of beaches you like gardens, head to the Gardens of Augustus.

They’re a series of flower bedecked terraces and gardens scattered with Roman statuary. It will only take 5-10 minutes to walk through the gardens. Be sure to sit down and take a selfie on the beautiful majolica bench.

But what you really come here for is the views! And they are definitely worth the price of admission.

From the garden’s observation deck, you have the classic Capri photo shot. You’ll be dazzled with panoramic views of the famous Faraglioni rock formations, the Marina Piccola bay, and the Mediterranean Sea.

view from the Gardens of Augustus, a must visit with one day in Capri

On the other side, you’ll have the iconic view of Via Krup. It’s known for its unique switchback layout.

It zigzags 300 feet down the cliffside from the area near the Gardens of Augustus to Marina Piccola. You used to be able to walk down. But the walkway is closed now because of falling rocks.

If you’re done with your one day in Capri, take the funicular back down to Marina Grande to catch your ferry back to the mainland.

Villa Jovis

But, if you have time left in your day and enjoy Roman ruins, catch a ride or hike to Villa Jovis. Emperor Tiberius built the villa in 27 AD and it’s at the highest point of the island.

Much of it still preserved and standing. It looks a bit like when you’re walking by the Palatine Hill in Rome . You can see arches and the footprint of the villa, including the layout of the various rooms, courtyards, and terraces.

Rumors and anecdotes about Emperor Tiberius’s extravagant parties, hedonistic behavior, and lavish lifestyle at Villa Jovis have persisted throughout history. Although whether they really happened is up for historical debate. It’s possible that he was just trying to get away from his domineering mother Livia.

If you’re accompanied by a guide, they’ll eagerly point out a fascinating spot known as Tiberius’ Leap behind the villa. Steps lead down to the platform.

Villa Jovis

According to legend, it’s the very spot from which Tiberius is said to have cast down his adversaries and those who fell short of his expectations in romantic affairs.

Be aware that Villa Jovis may not always be accessible, sometimes limiting its opening to weekends even during peak season. I’ve heard that financial constraints have led the Italian state to struggle with maintenance, resulting in some deterioration of the site. It’s indeed regrettable!

If the villa is closed, there’s still a chance to explore. Look for a gap in the wire gate to the left of the entrance. That’s the pathway I used to venture in myself.

From the villa, you’ll have splendid views of the Amalfi Coast. If time permits (which it probably doesn’t), you can walk back on the coastal trail, Via del Pizzolungo.

The walk is about 1.5 to 2 hours long. Along the way, you’ll see Belvedere di Tragara, the Grotto di Matermania, and the Arco Natural.

Departure or Dinner

If you are day tripping to Capri, it’s time to return home. Make sure to check when the last ferries depart and have pre-booked tickets.

The last ferry to Sorrento departs around 6:30 pm. The last ferry to Naples departs around 8:00 pm. You can check the ferry schedules and book tickets on Ferryhopper .

If you are overnighting, there are plenty of dinner options.

The cuisine here is a celebration of simplicity and freshness, with a farm-to-table ethos that shines through in every dish. Try to sample the seafood, caprese salads, caprese ravioli, and lemon-infused desserts.

cozy interior of Gelsomina

I mentioned Da Gelsomina above. if you didn’t have time for a leisurely lunch, you can have dinner there. A shuttle will pick you up and take you back to your accommodation.

For those seeking a Michelin-starred experience, Capri Palace boasts three exceptional options. L’Olivo, with its delectable seafood offerings and breathtaking vistas, serves up cuisine that’s as visually stunning as it is flavorful.

Terazza Brunella is another gem where you can dine in style with captivating views. Nestled close to the belvedere of the same name, this spot adds an extra touch of romance to your dining experience.

If you’re in search of a unique setting, Da Paolino is a delightful choice. Set within a garden flourishing with lemon trees, you’ll be seated beneath a fragrant canopy of citrus.

Tips For A One Day In Capri Day Trip Itinerary

Here are some must know tips to help you plan your day trip to Capri and navigate the island.

1. How To Get To Capri

Most people arrive in Capri by ferry. The easiest way to get to Capri is by ferry or hydrofoil. You can catch a ferry from Naples , Sorrento , Amalfi , or Positano .

None of them take more than about 40-60 minutes. I’ve linked the ferry schedules by town.

Book early because they’re often sold out. I don’t advise taking the slow ferry for a day trip. It will eat up too much of your time.

Marine Piccola in Sorrento

Ferries from Naples to Capri depart from the Molo Beverello and the Calata Porta di Massa. Ferries from Sorrento depart from Marina Piccola (not from Marina Grande).

The ferry ride is pretty fun and scenic. For the best views of Mount Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast, sit on the left.

Another option is to book a private transfer by speedboat from Naples or a private transfer from Rome .

Many people find it easiest to get to Capri on a guided tour from Sorrento or a guided tour from Naples . Then, you don’t have to worry about ferry and transportation logistics or getting around the island on your own.

majolica bench in the Gardens of Augustus

2. How To Get Around Capri

You’ll arrive in Marina Grande.

The Funicolare di Capri, a charming funicular railway, links the marina with Capri Town. It’s on the western side of the port, offering easy access.

In addition to the funicular, you have the choice of taxis and SPICC buses to navigate the island.

Taxi stands are conveniently located at the marina. The bus system is also very easy to navigate and inexpensive. But you should expect long lines in high season.

Another good option is to rent a scooter for the day. You can cover a lot of ground with a scooter without waiting for transport.

Hotel Cesare Augustus

3. Where To Stay In Capri

If you decide to stay overnight, you’ll want to stay either in or around capri town or anacapri. the top hotels are:.

 • Hotel Caesar Augustus
 • Capri P alace
 • J.K. Place Capri
 • Hotel Punta Tragara
 • Grand Hote l Quisisana

I stayed at the Hotel Caesar Augustus near Anacapri and couldn’t have been happier.

4. When To Visit Capri

Capri stands among the world’s most breathtaking destinations IF the weather aligns favorably. Rainy or foggy conditions may obscure the island’s beauty. So, sunny skies are the ultimate companion for your visit.

On my most recent sojourn in early May, we had fluctuating weather conditions and some fog. A local guide shared that spring’s arrival appears to be tardier with each passing year.

With this in mind, targeting a trip for late May or the transitional periods of September and early October may be the best.

During the summer months, you’ll have mega crowds. This is high season. Winter brings cooler temperatures and certain closures that might affect your plans.

How to Take a Captivating Day Trip to Capri

Taking a day trip to Capri is like taking a trip to another dimension.

From Capri, the blue of the water glistens just a little brighter. The curves of the cliffs are just a bit more majestic. The location, in general, is just a bit otherworldly–like something out of a legend.

Capri’s magnificent beauty has been beckoning the rich and famous to visit it for a couple of millennia, from Roman emperors to modern movie stars, and thousands of others in between.

Today, Capri maintains a bit of that glitz and glamour–the location alone demands it–but anyone can easily take a day trip to Capri and enjoy a slice of its glorious beauty for themselves (just don’t expect to spot any celebrities unless you stay past 6:00 PM).

Paying a visit to the Amalfi Coast or the surrounding area and want to spend a day on Capri? Here’s how to do it.

How to Get to Capri

The best things to do on day trip to capri, should you take a tour to capri, when to take a capri day trip, tips for taking the perfect day trip to capri.

Unless you happen to have a private boat that you’re sailing to Capri, there are, essentially, two ways to take a day trip to Capri: by ferry or by tour.

Ferries run several times a day from all the nearby tourism hubs like Sorrento, Amalfi, Positano, and even Naples–but they aren’t cheap! Depending on where you are coming from, expect to pay around 20 Euros/person each way, plus a 2.5 Euro tourist tax upon arriving in Capri.

View of red funicular traveling up the hill to Capri Town

For this reason, tours are often quite a bargain for a day trip to Capri, as they typically include both transport there and back, as well as (usually) a boat tour around the island, and some tours even cover the tourist tax for you.

We took a tour similar to this one from Sorrento and were very pleased with the value.

Book your day tour to Capri today! From Sorrento | From the Amalfi Coast | From Naples

Whichever way you decide to visit Capri for one day, expect to spend about 30 minutes getting there from Sorrento or Positano, just under an hour from Amalfi, or 1-2 hours from Naples.

You can check exact prices and times for ferries to Capri here .

Take a boat tour around the island.

Cruising around the island of Capri is an absolute delight: the views are stunning, the grottos remarkable, and the relaxing nature of laying back on a boat and watching such a beautiful part of the world go by is incredible.

I definitely recommend making sure that a boat tour is part of your day trip to Capri–it is one of our favorite memories from our time exploring the Amalfi Coast and surrounding area!

Mariana Grande, Capri, as seen from a boat, with bow of boat in the foreground.

Visit the peak of Mount Solaro.

Riding the chairlift up to the highest point on Capri is an experience within itself–and the views from the top are magnificent!

Keep in mind that to reach the chairlift, you’ll need to first head to Anacapri–so if this is at the top of your list of things to do in Capri, we recommend heading that way the moment you disembark onto Capri for the day.

Soak in jaw-dropping views at the Garden of Augustus.

At only 1 Euro, the Garden of Augustus is a downright bargain for the views you receive: just look at that water!

Somehow, these gardens don’t get spoken of as much as other viewpoints around Capri, but we just couldn’t tear our eyes away from the views of the Faraglioni or Via Krupp, which snakes toward the sea far below the Garden of Augustus.

Photo of Faraglioni near Capri, as seen from the Garden of Augustus on a Capri Day Trip

Tour the Blue Grotto.

I’ll be honest: I’m including this here only because of its fame, but I truly don’t recommend touring the Blue Grotto during your day trip to Capri.

While the colors are supposed to be lovely, the wait times to enter the grotto are insane (think over an hour to get into it in the middle of the day), and the actual time spent in the grotto is incredibly short (think under 5 minutes).

While we didn’t tour the Blue Grotto ourselves, based on what I have read online, have heard from friends, and what we heard from our fellow tour-goers who decided to visit on the day we took our Capri day trip, I feel pretty confident in recommending avoiding the Blue Grotto on a day trip to Capri.

If you are desperate to visit, consider spending a night on Capri and then visiting the Blue Grotto the moment it opens in the morning, well before the daytrippers arrive.

Check out Villa San Michele.

Built as the dream home of a Swedish doctor in the late 19th century, this beautiful mansion-turned-museum was designed specifically to showcase stunning views of Capri–and it succeeded.

If you can bear to tear your eyes away from the sea for a moment, there are also plenty of interesting historical artifacts on the property, including the famous sphinx that overlooks Capri.

Photo of the cliffs of Capri

Stroll through the center of Anacapri.

While Capri Town is lovely, Anacapri is quieter–if you’re heading that way to visit Villa San Michele or Mount Solaro, definitely take a bit of time on your Capri day trip to meander through the town itself!

Sip a drink in the Piazzetta.

Capri’s Piazzetta is a place to see and be seen, and there’s something truly delightful about ordering a cocktail or an espresso and watching the world go by from your table.

Definitely make a stop here on your day trip to Capri–just chalk the prices up to part of the experience and try not to wince too hard!

Woman drinking lemon spritz in Piazzetta on a day trip to Capri

I touched on this above, but while it’s certainly not a bad idea to visit Capri for a day independently via ferry, day tours to Capri are actually a surprisingly good value.

We chose to take one similar to this tour and had a great time, and we loved not having to deal with booking a boat tour once we arrived on Capri.

Most tours to Capri will leave you free for most of the day to explore–ours did–but add simplicity and structure to the day by covering your transportation to and from Capri, as well as frequently a boat tour and the tourist tax the island charges, all in one flat rate.

White streets of Capri Town

Capri is one of those lucky destinations that is stunning year-round: spring brings beautiful blooms, summer the height of its busy season with plenty of fashionable residents coming and going, autumn reduced crowds, and winter a much slower pace of life (expect for many restaurants and stores to be closed).

Personally, I’d be most excited about taking a day trip to Capri in the spring for views and in the summer for boat tours and swimming–but if you happen to be visiting the region during the offseason, I wouldn’t necessarily avoid the island.

The most important component of when to take a Capri day trip, I would argue, isn’t the temperature so much as the lighting: this is an island that looks best bathed in sunlight, and I highly recommend trying to schedule your day trip to Capri for one of the sunniest days of your visit to the area.

Budget generously.

There’s just no way around it: Capri is expensive.

If you’re on a tight budget and want to see the island inexpensively, we recommend packing your own food and drinks and admiring the views from the budget-friendly Garden of Augustus.

If you’re hoping to grab food or drink on the island or to hit the major tourist spots, though, be prepared! For example, the going rate on Capri for an Aperol Spritz was around 12 Euros (about double the going rate on the already-pricey mainland)–that should give you an idea of what kind of prices you’re going to be looking at on Capri!

Photo of 2 cocktails on a table on Capri

Avoid the Blue Grotto.

I touched on this above, but on a Capri day trip, the Blue Grotto will eat up huge amounts of your time on Capri for what is generally considered to be an underwhelming and overpriced experience–unless the Blue Grotto is a major bucket list item for you, I recommend focusing elsewhere for your time on Capri.

Visit in the sunshine!

Capri thrives on sunshine.

This island is all about the views, and since virtually all of those views include the sea, planning your day on Capri for a time when the sea will be sparkling at its very best will greatly improve your visit.

Faraglioni with cacti in the foreground on Capri

Don’t plan on sandy beaches.

While Capri is a stunning coastal destination, it’s not really a beach one–don’t plan on coming here for a stretch of sand.

The island is more about appreciating the rocky coastline than laying out in the sun, so play to its strengths during your day trip to Capri!

Rocky Beach in Capri, Amalfi Coast or Cinque Terre

If you want to eat a nice meal on the island, plan ahead.

Like most destinations as popular as Capri, there are magnificent restaurants… and plenty of tourist traps.

Since you’re going to be spending a pretty penny for a meal on Capri regardless, make sure it’s worth it and research a restaurant you’d like to visit (and if possible, make a reservation) ahead of time.

capri day trip or stay

Given that you need three days in Capri, it is right to wonder if it makes sense to go there on a day trip. The answer is yes! One day in Capri itinerary

capri day trip or stay

1. Boat tour and Blue Grotto

The perfect way to begin your day trip to Capri is to sign yourself up for its epic boat tour that includes a visit to the remarkable Blue Grotto. Seat yourself comfortably in a boat and soar through the calm blue waters of the Amalfi coast. The sun reflects gorgeously in the water, creating a pristine and serene look that will make your jaw drop. If you look into the distance, you can observe the stunning skyline of Capri, marked by high-rise mountains and bustling shore activity. The scene is impeccable, and you will fall in love with it. The tour takes you to explore the Blue Grottos Capri is so famous for. These remarkable cavers appear to be illuminated by the most beautiful shade of luminescent blue. It feels like you are on a different planet altogether! The views are going to imbed themselves in your brain, and you will love every moment of cherishing them.

See other Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) related tours and activities here

2. Monte Solaro

If you are in Capri, even for a day, you must visit Monte Solaro. It is one of those destinations that you cannot afford to miss at all, for what it has to offer is so spectacular that you will not find anything like anywhere else in the world. To reach your destination, you would first have to travel to Anacapri, a neighboring town, very easily accessible via a bus. From there, the way to get to Monte Solaro is via a chairlift, riding, which is a thrilling and exhilarating experience in itself. Enjoy the stunning views below as you sit in your cabin. Witness phenomenal panoramic views of Bays of Naples and Salerno and feel as your jaw slowly drops in amazement. The views are spectacular and nothing like anything you have seen before in life. After you have soaked in the views, you should walk around a little and head to the hermitage of Cetrella, which is regarded as Capri’s most ‘otherworldy church.’ The church has been a worship site for hundreds of years and holds remarkable historical and architectural values.

See tours and activities related to Monte Solaro here

3. Garden of Augustus

The garden of Augustus is one of the least mentioned Capri destinations, and we cannot understand why. The garden is situated above a low cliff that overlooks the gorgeously blue Amalfi coast waters, meaning that the views from the garden are so fantastic that you will not be able to tear your eyes away. Other than this, the garden itself is a piece of art. With lush greenery carefully groomed and planned, the park seems like a wonderland on earth. Your morning excursions may have tired you some, so now is your time to recharge yourself. Lie down on the soft grass and soak in the beautiful sunlight to recharge yourself before heading to your next destination.

See all Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto) related tours and activities here.

4. Villa San Michele

On your day trip to Capri, you will realize that the sea is the highlight of all constructions along the shore. And it makes perfect sense for it to be the star – after all, it is one of the gorgeous coasts on the planet. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that a Swedish doctor looking to build a dream house chose this strategic location. The mansion now serves as a museum, showcasing some brilliant artifacts. The items on display are historical and hold excellent value. One of the best things to witness here is the famous sphinx that overlooks Capri.

See all related Villa San Michele tours and activities here

5. Piazzetta

By now, you must have worked your appetite, having been strolling since morning. It is time that you allow yourself to indulge in gastronomical pleasures. Stop by any of Capri’s restaurants and enjoy mouthwatering meals. The district is known for its amazing food, so you will find enough to gorge upon. Afterward, head to Piazzetta, an eatery one must visit while touring the Amalfi area. It is an area buzzing with activity, with people coming in and going all the time. The ambiance is lovely, and the caterers are welcoming and friendly, meaning that your time here will be well-spent. Order a refreshing cocktail and sip onto it while absorbing the local vibe.

6. Grotta di Matromania

The best answer to the question of how to spend one day in Capri is that you should visit all its classics. One of the most interesting things in Capri that you must visit during your one day in Capri’s itinerary is Grotta di Matromania. It is a large, ancient cave that has enjoyed quite remarkable history. Not only has the cave a peculiar structure that invites curiosity, but its ancient role also intrigues people. During Roman times, the cave was dedicated to the cult of Mithras and was regarded as a major worship site.

Day Trip to Capri: How to Get There & What You Absolutely NEED to Know

Last Updated: April 8, 2024 // by Ashley Smith 4 Comments

When spending time on the Amalfi Coast, a day trip to Capri is naturally an excursion many visitors want to take. They dream of sailing across the sapphire waters to hang out on sun-soaked patios and sip Aperol spritz among the rich and shameless. And the best part is that they can do so from just about any base on the Amalfi Coast.

Personally, I took my Capri day trip from nearby Sorrento , but you can also get there easily from such places as Positano, Naples, Salerno , and more. This Capri day trip guide will explain how you can take your own day trip to Capri from wherever you’re basing yourself along the Amalfi Coast.

Afterwards, I also share some of the most vital information you NEED to know before you set sail on your Capri day trip. I mean it—don’t skip this info!

Why take a Capri day trip?

Maybe you’ve always dreamed of visiting the Isle of Capri… and maybe you’ve just recently heard about it. Regardless, here are some of the most popular reasons for taking a day trip to Capri:

Because it’s famous

Maybe you didn’t even realize, but you’ve been yearning for that Capri sun since you were a child. (See what I did there?) The Isle of Capri, as some fancy people call it, is well-known as a hub for luxury and relaxation.

Perhaps you don’t know much about Capri, but you certainly know it’s ground zero for celebrities and their yachts and other rich people doing rich people things. While wearing capri pants , no doubt. So naturally you want to see what the hell is going on over there.

capri day trip or stay

Because you love Caprese salad

And what else is Capri known for? Well, for being the namesake of Caprese salad, of course! That delicious combination of fresh tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil originated here (hence the name).

Want to eat caprese in Capri? This is your chance! (I’m personally a big fan of eating foods in their namesakes. Like bolognese in Bologna, Parmesan cheese in Parma, etc. I was therefore pretty excited when I got to eat caprese in Capri. It’s the small things, shut up.)

capri day trip or stay

Because you want to get out on the water for a day

Visiting the Amalfi Coast is nice and all (ok, huge understatement) but you can’t help but be drawn to the water after watching the boats and all the boat people having boat fun all day. You want to be a boat person!

I love taking boat trips wherever I am, so during my stay on the Amalfi Coast I knew I wanted to spend a day on the water. But, without having to charter my own yacht and all (which is actually what all my friends did).

capri day trip or stay

Taking a day trip to Capri also includes some fantastic water-based sightseeing. You get to see all kinds of interesting Mediterranean landscapes, swim in the warm waters, sip some suds while relaxing on a boat, and more.

The ability to spend the day on a boat was actually what called me to take my Capri day trip, and it’s also why I would recommend one for you too. Plus, many of the Capri day trips also include alcohol, lunch, and even a limoncello toast at the end. So there’s that.

capri day trip or stay

For the natural beauty

Speaking of interesting landscapes, on a day trip to Capri you’ll get to see all kinds of natural southern Italian beauty. You’ll pass by cliffside waterfalls, interesting rock formations, and caves. Then you’ll have the chance to go inside the Blue Grotto and the Green Grotto and the White Grotto and… there are so many grottoes here.

You can sail through the Faraglioni Rocks and kiss your lover while you do so for good luck. You’ll see lighthouses and beautiful flowers, colorful buildings, and, yeah, tanned bodies on ridiculously oversized yachts. As you bob on by in your flamingo innertube.

capri day trip or stay

Because you want to look for celebrities

They say Capri is one of the many luxury destinations in Italy where you might spot a celebrity or two. But this is total crap because you know they are not hanging out in the busy tourist ports or in the quality-poor restaurants outside the kitschy gift shops. But I digress.

I won’t judge if you wanna tell your friends back home you saw [insert whoever here] on your day trip to Capri. And that he/she asked you for the time and then complimented your capri pants.

Perhaps there’s even a “map of the stars” you can pick up for Capri if you really want to see who you can find. If so, more power to you. Your Capri day trip is yours to do as you please.

How to take a day trip to Capri

Being that the island of Capri is pretty close to some of the most popular areas, it’s easy to get to Capri in a variety of ways.

By far the easiest way is to take an all-day organized tour. This is what I did and what I would recommend to others. It’s really the most hassle-free of all the options.

You can also hire your own private boat. While this may be the most fun way to take a Capri day trip, it’s definitely the most expensive. But maybe you’re looking to check out the island so you can scout some properties to move into. In which case, book that boat, baller.

capri day trip or stay

You can also take the ferry to Capri from a number of locations on the Amalfi Coast. This will get you from Point A to Point B, plain and simple. But, you won’t get all the other perks of the Capri day tours like swimming in the ocean, snorkeling, bobbing up and down in a flamingo inner tube, etc. You won’t get to check out the natural beauty as much. You’ll just go straight to Capri and back.

If you’ve got specific Capri things to do on your bucket list, this is the no-nonsense way to ensure you get the most time on the island itself during your day trip. If you’re like me and you want to experience what’s around the island too, a day tour might be the best for you.

The following sections are instructions on how to take a day trip to Capri from some of the most popular mainland locations.

Sorrento day trip to Capri

Sorrento is one of the most popular bases in the Amalfi Coast area (even though it is technically not part of the AC). This is where I was staying when I took my Capri day trip in 2019 and getting there was super easy.

I opted for one of the organized day tours to keep it as simple as possible. Here are some of the most popular Capri day trips from Sorrento:

 • Capri and Blue Grotto Day Tour from Naples or Sorrento – Includes admission to the magical Blue Grotto and lots of time on Capri.
 • Full-Day Small-Group Cruise to Capri Island from Sorrento – On the way, you’ll also visit the Marvelous Grotto, the Green Grotto, and Faraglioni rocks.
 • From Sorrento: Capri Boat Tour with visit to the Blue Grotto – Also includes snacks, drinks, beer, a bottle of prosecco (ok, keep going…), snorkeling equipment, swimming stops, and more.
 • Check out all Sorrento to Capri day trips here to see if there’s a better fit for you. You can even find a handful of private day trips here too.

How to take the ferry from Sorrento to Capri and back

All high-speed Sorrento > Capri ferries leave from Sorrento’s Marina Piccola and leave numerous times throughout the day. The trip each way takes between 20-30 minutes and you can choose from a couple of different ferry companies. The most user-friendly ones are:

 • NLG (Navigazione Libera del Golfo)
 • Caremar (Campania Regionale Marittima)

Salerno to Capri day trip

While not technically “on the Amalfi Coast,” Salerno is an excellent transportation hub for the entire area. As such, you can easily get to Capri from Salerno too. But, since it is a bit further away, you may pay a little bit more for your Capri day trip. Here are the most popular Salerno to Capri options:

 • Small Group Tour from Salerno to Capri by Boat – This one includes all the good stuff: bottled water, alcoholic beverages, snacks, lunch, beach towels, plus time on the island as well as swimming stops and a ride through the Faraglioni Rocks.
 • From Salerno: Small Group Li Galli Islands and Capri Boat Tour – Small group on a traditional gozzo boat, swimming in the Li Galli islets, bevs/snacks/lunch provided, and excellent reviews.
 • Check out all Salerno to Capri day trips here . They have lots of private options and great deals for groups.

Ferry from Salerno to Capri

Unfortunately, there are no direct ferries from Salerno to Capri. In this case, you would need to take a ferry from Salerno to another Amalfi Coast city like Positano or Amalfi, and then take the ferry from there to Capri.

That’s already like half of your day. In this case, I would absolutely just book one of the organized and direct tours above.

Amalfi to Capri day trip

Given that Amalfi (the town) is one of the most popular on the Amalfi (Coast), there are many Amalfi to Capri day trips to choose from. Here are some of the most well-reviewed:

 • Full-Day Capri Island Cruise from Amalfi – Includes snacks and beverages (+ prosecco), seeing all the beautiful natural sights, and 4 hours of free time on Capri. (The description mentions only Positano or Praiano, but you can indeed take this from the Amalfi port.)
 • Capri All Inclusive Boat Tour + City Visit – Includes all the usual stuff, but also an open bar all day, all taxes and fees, light lunch + snacks and fruit, snorkeling equipment and inflatables, and more.
 • See all Amalfi to Capri tours here . There are a lot to choose from that are only subtly different. There are also a lot of private tour offerings for groups. (This is a great way to cut costs!)

Amalfi ferry to Capri

And if it’s just time on Capri you’re looking for, you can easily take the Amalfi ferry to Capri. You won’t get to see all the nature or go swimming or sip prosecco, but you will get there in just one hour.

Check out the Amalfi ferry to Capri schedules and buy tickets here on Positano Jet .

Day trip to Capri from Positano

Positano is arguably the most well-known and popular city on the Amalfi Coast. This is going to be the hub from which you can get just about anywhere.

Many of the tours already listed also offer pickups in Positano as well. Here are some of the most popular day trips to Capri from Positano:

 • Full-Day Capri Island Cruise from Positano – Includes snacks and beverages (+ prosecco), seeing all the great natural sites, and four hours of free time on Capri.
 • See all Positano to Capri day trips here to choose the best one for you and your travel buddies.

Naples to Capri day trip

You don’t even have to be staying on the Amalfi Coast to take a day trip to Capri. Even those of you sticking to Naples will be able to spend a day on the water here. Check out the most popular Naples to Capri day trips here:

 • From Naples: Island of Capri Full-Day Tour with Lunch – See the Blue Grotto, have lunch at a restaurant, and get a guided tour of Capri so you can actually learn about it!

The ferry from Naples to Capri takes about 50 minutes. You can see timetables and buy tickets from these ferry companies: (Remember to search for Napoli instead of Naples.)

Capri day trip from Rome

If you’re absolutely dying to take a day trip to Capri and you aren’t going to find yourself any further south than Rome, even you’re in luck. Yes, you can take a day trip to Capri from Rome. I’m not saying it’s going to be the most enjoyable day, but it’s still possible. If this your goal, check out these Rome to Capri tour options:

 • Capri Day Trip from Rome – 13 hours, lunch, air conditioned transportation, and dedicated guide included.
 • There are a few others but the reviews are just so bad I’m not even going to point you in that direction. A Capri day trip from Rome is technically doable, but there are better ways to spend your time in Italy, for sure.

Ferry from Rome to Capri

If you’d rather take a ferry to Capri and you find yourself in Rome, you also have limited options. Instead, the recommended itinerary would be to take the train from Rome to Naples and then catch a ferry to Capri from there. Don’t make things harder on yourself.

Important capri day trip information: what you need to know.

Before you head out on your day trip to Capri, there are a few things you absolutely need to know first. This is largely to help you manage your expectations so you can have the most enjoyable experience possible.

If you think your Capri day trip is going to be some movie-worthy magical experience, you may be disappointed. If you know what you’re getting into, you’ll be able to have a better time.

capri day trip or stay

1. Expect huge crowds.

Like, an unenjoyable amount of people. Summer in Italy is peak season, and summer in the Amalfi Coast is just absolute chaos. I’m talking literally elbow to elbow here.

Lots of lines, almost nowhere to get a table for lunch, crowded streets and shops. Spoiler alert: you were not the only one who thought a day trip to Capri would be a good idea.

capri day trip or stay

2. Expect rude service.

That many people crowded onto a tiny island during the hot summer months in a land where air conditioning ceases to exist? It shows, and it shows in the attitudes of those you’ll come into contact with.

It reminds me a lot of Venice actually – a city utterly dependent on tourism but that absolutely despises tourists and makes no effort to hide their disgust in you. That accurately sums up my interactions with the locals on the island of Capri.

We stopped into one hole-in-the-wall for a beer. The beer they served us was long expired and tasted truly rancid. When we tried to tell them (and that we weren’t going to pay for it) we got literally screamed at and bullied. Eventually we “settled” on paying for half the cost but what a nightmare that was. It was clearly a scam to rob money from tourists.

capri day trip or stay

3. Expect everything to be way overpriced.

The issue with the beers was worsened by the fact that they were €8 a piece. For a small bottled beer. What a joke. But that’s Capri in the summer.

Everything you want to buy there – food, drinks, souvenirs, etc. – is going to be grossly overpriced. Like, exorbitantly. And the quality is going to be shit.

capri day trip or stay

4. Expect it to be difficult to get into restaurants.

There are only so many tables to go around on an island that small with such huge crowds. And most of those visitors are also on a day trip to Capri. And they’re all hungry. Just like you.

Don’t get too hung up on one particular eatery if you don’t have a reservation. Be prepared to eat wherever you can find space. (But you know you should never eat at the empty restaurant when all the rest are full. Just saying.)

capri day trip or stay

5. Expect something to go awry.

I’m just saying, it wouldn’t hurt to go ahead and expect your boat to break down in the middle of the ocean before you even get there.

Luckily, I’ve spent enough time in Italy to know that this is just how things go. My expectations are already tremendously low when it comes to Italian logistics. So, when our boat suddenly died on the way to Capri, my husband and I just looked at each other and silently communicated: “Yeah, that checks out.”

By some miracle another boat was able to stop and, I think, refill our gas for us. Thankfully we were only stopped for about half an hour. The sun was out and it was so relaxing on the water… you have to just expect things like that will happen and take it all in stride.

capri day trip or stay

6. Expect to not even get into the Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto is famous and will be a selling point of your Capri day tour. BUT, it comes with a catch. There’s a good chance you won’t even get to go inside at all.

You’ll see when you get there but… it’s chaos at the Blue Grotto. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason beyond “first come, first served.” There are tons of boats waiting to get in and it gets crowded.

Basically, you have to wait until someone gives you the go ahead… which could be hours. There’s never a guarantee. On our trip, the captain took a poll as to whether or not we wanted to attempt it (even though a trip to the Blue Grotto was promised in the tour). When some said they did, we then waited. We waited for over an hour before the people who wanted to go admitted defeat, and off we went to Capri.

So, even if your tour says it includes a trip to the Blue Grotto, keep in mind that that’s probably conditional. I mean, they will take you to the Blue Grotto most likely, but getting inside is a different story.

capri day trip or stay

7. Keep an open mind

I’m sharing all of this to let you know what a day trip to Capri was like for me . Your experience may be quite different. The only way to know is to go! If a day trip to Capri is something you want to do, I highly encourage you to do it!

It won’t take too much of your time and it doesn’t cost an unreasonable amount. You’ll still get to see beautiful natural sites and drink booze on a boat off the Amalfi Coast. Life is freaking good. Even if you are just sitting there waiting to be rescued.

What to pack for a day trip to Capri

If you’re taking one of the above Capri day trip tours, there are a few essential things you’ll need to remember to pack.

Bathing suit and cover up – Your day trip will likely also include swimming in the ocean and there isn’t really anywhere to change. Plan to wear your bathing suit during your tour under some loose clothing or a dress. I love bathing suits from Cupshe and throwing on a summer dress from Lulu’s as a cover up.

looking down at two pairs of feet in some hiking sandals

Waterproof sandals that are also comfortable walking shoes – Make sure to wear something like Chacos , Tevas , or Keens that make both great boat shoes and comfortable walking shoes for when you’re on the island.

Dry bag – Leave the fancy purse at your hotel and keep everything you’re going to take on your Capri day trip in a dry bag. These are perfect for boat outings!

And don’t forget the usual:

 • Sunscreen – Make sure it’s reef-friendly!
 • A super handy Amalfi Coast guidebook
 • This priceless Italy customs and culture guide

Where to stay in Capri

You can absolutely stay the night in Capri if you don’t want such a fast-paced day trip. If you’re interested in actually experiencing Capri, this is the best way to do it. You’ll get to experience the island before and after the day trip crowds leave. You’ll probably get to eat where you want and walk without crowds. Beautiful!

If you’re looking to spend more than just one day on Capri, check out these popular hotels:

 • Il Giardino dell’Arte – Gorgeous rooms and property, an outdoor swimming pool, air conditioning (!!!), and excellent reviews.
 • Villa Calypso – Super posh, amazing views, lots of happy customers.
 • Da Gelsomina – More great views, a restaurant on site, a terrace, ahh it sounds so nice.
 • See all Capri hotels here – There are so many good ones!

How to get to Capri

If you’re thinking about taking a day trip to Capri, here’s some helpful information on how to get there from a selection of popular Italian destinations.

How to get to Capri from Naples

Taking a day trip from Naples to Capri is fairly straightforward. Ferries to Capri leave from two piers: Molo Beverello and Calata di Massa. The crossing is around 28km and costs around 22 EUR.

The fast, high-speed ferry connections depart from Molo Beverello, in Piazza Municipio. The cheaper but slower car ferries leave from the Calata di Massa pier.

The ferry schedules change throughout the year and are weather dependent. The slow ferry takes 1 hour 20 minutes, with the normal ferry taking 50 minutes and the high-speed ferry 40 minutes.

It’s worth mentioning that during the summer months only residents are allowed to bring cars and scooters onto the island, so that you can plan your Italy itinerary and Capri day trip accordingly.

How to get to Capri from Sorrento

Day trips to Capri from Sorrento are made easy thanks to the regular ferry connection that runs between the two destinations.

Capri is located around 16km from Sorrento, with the ferry journey taking between 20 to 25 minutes.

Hydrofoils and high-speed ferries run between Capri and Sorrento all year round, with 20 connections every day in the peak summer months.

The cost of a ferry ticket is on average 20 EUR, but this depends on the time of year and the ferry company you choose.

How to get to Capri from Rome

If you’re thinking about taking a Rome to Capri day trip, then firstly you’ll need to catch a train from Rome ’s Termini station to Naples.

You could also opt to take a bus from Fiumicino airport in Rome to Naples’ Piazza Garibaldi train station. Once you’re in Naples, the next step of the journey is taking the ferry from either one of the ports.

The distance between the two destinations is around 270 km — expect the journey to take upwards of three hours.

Personally, I wouldn’t recommend Rome as a starting point for your Capri day trip, as you will spend way too long travelling, and not as long in Capri.

It’s better to stay in the Amalfi Coast, and explore other cute towns there while you’re at it!

How to get to Capri from Positano

A seasonal fast ferry connects Positano and Capri, running between April until late October.

Ferries leave around 7 times a day, taking around 30 minutes to travel the 22km stretch of water, which makes a Positano day trip to Capri super simple.

Prices are upwards of 20 EUR, but can vary depending on the ferry company and the time of day you’re travelling.

How to get to Capri from Amalfi

Amalfi and Capri are approximately located about 33 km away from each other. The two destinations are connected by a seasonal high-speed ferry, which makes approximately 7 crossings a day.

Day trips from Amalfi to Capri are really only possible between April and October when the ferry service is in operation.

Ferry tickets cost around 20 EUR, and the journey takes one hour.

The best way to do a Capri day trip

The best way to visit Capri on a day trip (in my opinion) is to make your own way there.

If you’re staying somewhere along the Amalfi Coast, day trips from places such as Sorrento to Capri or Amalfi are easily done independently.

All you have to do is take the ferry from the port nearest to where you’re staying, and then explore Capri independently once there.

You can then join a short boat tour directly in Capri (this is what we did). That way you don’t have to worry about strict timings and following a group.

You can enjoy swimming around Capri, and the views of Capri from the sea for a short period of time, and then have plenty of free time to wander around the island.

For example, the first ferry from Amalfi is at 8:30AM. You can then book a boat tour for around 10AM, which will take you to all of the top Capri coastline sights.

This private couple’s boat tour leaves from Capri’s Marina Grande harbour (it’s the exact tour we did, and I can highly recommend it).

The local skipper will take you to a collection of Capri’s coastal attractions including the option to stop off at the Blue Grotto (optional), as well as other stunning sea caves such as the Green, White and Red grottos.

The Faraglioni Rocks, Punta Carena Lighthouse and the Natural Arch are all also included in the 2-hour itinerary, as well as the chance to have a swim in Marina Piccola.

Then, after getting dropped off back at Capri’s port, you can spend the afternoon wandering around the sights of Capri. Then all you have to do is make sure to catch the last ferry back to Amalfi around 7PM.

It’s the best way to see Capri because it gives you the most flexibility. You don’t have to spend time waiting around for other people in your group, and you don’t have a boat captain telling you to do quick swimming stops.

You’ll have plenty of time to discover all of the sights of Capri like Anacapri and Marina Grande, eat some delicious local food, and see the Capri coastline from the sea and the famous Faraglioni on a short boat trip.

Capri one day itinerary

I’ve given you all the details on how to get to Capri from all of the main cities in the area, as well as options for guided yours if you don’t want to make your way there independently.

You can also follow my last suggestion and do a combination of the two; get to Capri independently, and then join a short Capri boat tour once there. You might not be wondering, what is there to actually do in Capri?

Once you’ve reached this idyllic Italian island, what is there to do in a day? Here I outline my suggestions for a one-day in Capri itinerary.

Do a boat trip around Capri

As I already mentioned, no Capri day trip itinerary would be complete without going on a boat trip around the island.

The island’s coastline is strewn with beautiful caves, charming coves and interesting natural rock formations. Join a group tour or hire a private boat for a few hours, and enjoy your time living la dolce vita!

As I already said, I suggest joining a short tour, and to do it first thing when you arrive in Capri.

Cruising along the coast of Capri, Italy

See the Faraglioni from the sea

The famous Faraglioni is one of the most well-known sights in Capri. The collection of three dramatically situated rocks is set just off the islands’ coast in the dazzlingly blue waters of the Mediterranean.

Get the best views of the Faraglioni on a boat tour of the island — the skipper might even drive the boat right through the dramatic stone arch of Faraglione di Mezzo.

Legend has it that you will end up marrying whoever you kiss while cruising under the stone arch of the Faraglioni. So if you’re doing this cruise with your partner, it can be a pretty magical moment!

Swim in Marina Piccola

Enjoy a refreshing dip in the warm waters around Capri. The town of Marina Piccola boasts the island’s biggest beach and is an ideal spot for swimming.

We did this as part of our boat tour, but you can also reach Marina Piccola from the land if you want to do it later in the day and visit other areas of the island during your boat trip.

Jumping into the crystal-clear water of Marina Piccola in Capri, Italy

Jumping into the crystal-clear water of Marina Piccola in Capri, Italy

Visit the Blue Grotto

Considered a must-see destination when visiting Capri, the Blue Grotto is a really popular sea cave.

The water inside the cave is brilliantly bright blue thanks to the sunlight that illuminates the cave from an underwater cavity.

The only downside is that the cave is so popular that it gets really busy. Tour boats have to wait for a long time to enter the cave and by the time you get inside, it can feel underwhelming.

Personally, we skipped it. Our skipper asked us what we wanted to do and we opted for more swimming time in Marina Piccola, as I don’t like caves and wasn’t interested in visiting.

That’s the good thing about booking a private boat tour. You can adapt the itinerary to your liking, and especially if you don’t want to see the Blue Grotto, you don’t have to wait hours for the rest of your group to visit it.

But it’s still considered a must-see in Capri!

Soak up the many historic streets, local eateries and cute boutiques in Capri Town and the famous Piazzetta. You can easily spend a few hours exploring all of the stores and places to eat around the charming town.

Relax at the Giardini di Augusto

The idea of German industrialist Friedrich Alfred Krupp, the Gardens of Augustus are a beautiful botanical garden.

Created in the early twentieth century, the gardens are made up of a collection of flower-strewn terraces that overlook the Faraglioni rocks and the Bay of Marina Piccola. Entrance costs 1.50 EUR.

Admire Via Krupp

Connecting the Giardini di Augusto with Marina Piccola down below is a steep, twisting footpath called the Via Krupp.

The path is made up of a number of hairpin bends as it snakes its way up around 100 metres in elevation. Visitors are rewarded with panoramic views out across the sea.

Go for a ride on the Seggiovia di Monte Solaro

Located near Piazza Vittoria, the chair lift of Anacapri takes travellers up and over the sloping landscape of Capri, providing incredible views of the island from the top of Monte Solaro.

The journey to the top takes around 13 minutes and costs 14 EUR for a return, or 11 EUR for a single trip.

From here you can soak up the views of the Gulf of Naples and spot Mount Vesuvius, the Gulf of Salerno and Ischia Island.

Explore Anacapri

The historic commune of Anacapri is perched up high on Mount Solaro, away from the glitz and glamour elsewhere on the island.

Famous for its picturesque views of the Bay of Naples, tranquil atmosphere and sleepy streets, you can reach the town by hiking along a trail or catching the chairlift.

Capri day trip cost

Capri is an expensive destination, but the cost of a day trip to Capri doesn’t have to be really expensive.

The amount you spend on the trip will vary depending on where you’re travelling from. Day trips to Capri from Rome, for example, will cost more than if you travel from somewhere close like Amalfi.

Train tickets from Rome to Naples range between 10 EUR to 30 EUR, depending on the time of day and how far in advance you have booked them.

You will then have to pay for the ferry from Naples to Capri, which is around 22 EUR.

A day trip to Capri from Sorrento is very affordable, as you only need to pay the ferry, which costs on average 22.50 EUR for a round trip.

Exploring the streets of Capri Town

Exploring the streets of Capri Town

From Almalfi or Positano to Capri, the ferry currently costs 26.50 EUR for a round trip on the fastest boat.

You should keep in mind that you will also have to pay a disembarkation fee when you arrive in Capri, which is around 2.50 EUR.

Tours are usually more expensive, as they often start at around 100 EUR per person, but you need to take into account that they often include all transfers, and often even meals.

What we did (taking the ferry there, then joining a boat tour once in Capri), was probably the most expensive option, but it worked better for our plans and travel style.

Is Capri worth visiting?

Yes, Capri is really worth visiting on a day trip. The island is extremely beautiful and even if you’re only spending one day in Capri, you can see a lot of the famous sites and soak in a little of the island’s culture too.

However, if your Italy travel budget allows for it (Capri is pricey after all) and you have some time in your Italy itinerary , I actually suggest not doing a day trip, but spending at least one night in Capri.

That way you can see it after all the day trippers leave, enjoying the beauty of the island to yourself, and without rushing around all day.

Do you need travel insurance for a Capri day tour?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance .

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your Italy travel insurance with Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

As a Greta’s Travels reader, you get 5% off your Heymondo travel insurance !

What to pack for a day trip to Capri

You don’t really need much besides your usual beach essentials, or whatever is already on your Italy packing list , to go on a day trip to Capri, but I listed below a few essentials anyway, just to make sure you don’t forget.

Power bank – You will need your phone to capture photos of Capri, show your tour or ferry bookings and Google map your way around, you don’t want your phone to run out of battery half-way through the day!

Fast-drying towel – I love these towels because they take up little space and dry quickly. If you’re planning on swimming during your Capri day trip, it’s good to have one on you.

Stainless steel water bottle – save money and reduce plastic consumption by bringing your own water bottle and refilling it on the go.

Sunscreen – You’ll be out on the water and under the sun all day, you don’t want to ruin your trip by getting sunburnt!

Where to stay for your Capri day trip

In this article I have outlined how to get to Capri from a variety of different cities, as there isn’t one single place from which you Capri day trip should start.

That said, personally I think that the best places to stay to visit Capri are along the Amalfi Coast, specifically Positano or Amalfi.

This is because you can combine your Capri trip with a wider Amalfi Coast itinerary , and if you’re staying in Amalfi or Positano the ferries set off from there, so you don’t have to add travel time to the harbour to your already long day.

Here are some of the best places to stay in Amalfi or Positano for every budget.

Budget: Holidays Baia D’Amalfi – While the words “budget” and “Amalfi Coast” don’t often go together, this hotel is pretty affordable and is located right by the harbour, perfect to get the ferry to Capri!

Click here to book your stay at Holidays Baia D’Amalfi!

Mid-range: Albergo S. Andrea – This hotel has beautiful views over the Duomo of Amalfi. For an affordable mid-range choice, it doesn’t get much better than this!

Check out prices & availability at Albergo S. Andrea in Amalfi here!

Luxury: Le Sirenuse – This is the luxury hotel in Positano by definition. With its gorgeous design, impeccable service, stunning views and central position, it’s the perfect place to treat yourself.

Final thoughts on the best day trip to Capri

There you have it, the ultimate guide on the best Capri day trips! Have you visited Capri before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

It was my third time visiting Capri, but since I was very young the first two times I visited, I have to admit I remembered very little about this beautiful island.

I arrived in Capri this time and saw it as if it was the first time, and I have to admit I loved it. It’s such a gorgeous island, with cute towns, picturesque harbours, beautiful crystal clear water and stunning scenery.

Alongside our day trip to Pompeii , discovering the ancient ruins of Pompeii and hiking the Path of the Gods , exploring the island of Capri was one of the highlights of my Amalfi Coast trip.

There are many popular day trip destinations in Italy, like Cinque Terre , Lake Como and Pisa , but I have to say that Capri is probably my favourite one. Especially if you visit Italy in summer , it’s a must-see on any Italy bucket list .

I hope you found my Capri day trips guide useful in planning your own day tour to Capri! If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below!

What to See in One Day

One-day itinerary for a visit to the island of Capri

What to See in One Day

If you're planning a quick day trip to the enchanting island of Capri, Italy, you need a well-organized itinerary to make the most of your limited time. Whether you're staying in Sorrento or Naples, or on a cruise docking for 24 hours, this guide will help you experience the best of Capri in just one day.

One day tour from Sorrento to Capri

One day tour from Positano to Capri

If you choose to explore Capri on your own, follow this detailed itinerary to maximize your time and ensure you see the island's top attractions.

Capri Boat Tour and the Blue Grotto

Begin your day by arriving on Capri as early as possible. Head to the private jetty in Marina Grande, the same dock where most ferries from the mainland arrive. Purchase a ticket for the Capri boat tour, including a visit to the famous Blue Grotto.

You can choose between a complete circle tour, which sails through the dramatic Faraglioni rock formations, or a shorter tour that only goes as far as the Blue Grotto and back. We recommend opting for the full-circle tour.

Chairlift to the Top of Mount Solaro

Upon returning to Marina Grande, board a bus to Anacapri (a 20-minute ride). From here, take the chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Bays of Naples and Salerno.

You can descend the mountain slope by chairlift or on foot. If you choose to walk (about 30 minutes), take a moment to visit the hermitage of Cetrella.

Villa San Michele

By now, you'll probably be hungry. You can either have lunch in one of Anacapri's restaurants, or grab a quick snack before heading to Villa San Michele. This house museum was created by 19th-century Swedish writer and physician Axel Munthe and offers one of the island's most panoramic views.

In and Around the Piazzetta

Next, take a bus back down to Capri and stop for a coffee or a refreshing drink at the bustling Piazzetta.

After your break, stroll down Via Camerelle, famous for its luxury shops and designer fashion boutiques. Continue along Via Tragara to reach a scenic overlook facing the Faraglioni rock formations. Snap a few photos before retracing your steps back to Via Camerelle. Instead of continuing on Via Camerelle, take the road uphill on the right (Via Padre Reginaldo Giuliano) until you come out on Via Fuorlovaldo and Via Le Botteghe.

Return to the Port

Once back in the Piazzetta, descend to the port by funicular train and catch a hydrofoil back to the mainland.

Useful Information for Your Capri Day Trip

Capri island ferry schedules

Getting around Capri

How much time do you need to see Capri's highlights?

To get a quick glimpse of the Piazzetta and Anacapri, you'll need at least 4 hours. For a more in-depth experience, including a boat tour around the island, plan for at least 7 hours. To fully explore all the sights and monuments on the island, allocate at least three days.

Do you need to book ferry tickets in advance?

While you can purchase ferry tickets directly at the port if there are still tickets available, it's a good idea to book in advance during the busy summer months of July and August and on weekends. This is especially true for the return ferries from Capri to the mainland in the afternoon, which tend to sell out.

When is the best time of the year to visit Capri?

The ideal months to visit Capri are April and May, as well as September through early October. If you're planning a day trip during the summer, consider staying overnight to avoid the crowds and fully enjoy the island's attractions.

Capri 1 Day Itinerary: How to Spend One Fabulous Day in Capri, Italy

1 Day itinerary for Capri, Italy

If you’re planning a vacation to the Amalfi Coast, you won’t want to miss a day trip to Capri!

Capri is known around the world as one of the most beautiful places in Italy. And like St Tropez, Mykonos and Monaco, Capri is also known as one of Europe’s most glamorous destinations.

From designer boutiques to five-star hotels, Capri can definitely be a luxury getaway if you want to treat yourself! But of course, there’s so much more to this island than the glitz and glamour.

Set off of the Amalfi Coast, Capri is a beautiful gem in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Rocky cliffs jut out of the turquoise waters to form the island and islets that dot Capri.

Atop the cliffs are the two main towns of the island, Capri and Anacapri. And in between, countless picturesque lemon trees and olive groves.

Here’s how to spend one fabulous day in Capri, Italy!

How to Spend One Day in Capri, Italy

How to Get to Capri

Because Capri is an island, the best way to day trip to Capri is by ferry, hydrofoil or private boat.

A Capri day trip from Naples is one of the most popular options and the fastest ferry can get you there in under an hour!

From Naples, there are two port options for departing to Capri: Porta di Massa and Beverello.

And, there are a few ferry options for Capri. You can opt for the slow ferry (traghetto), a faster ferry (Nave Veloce) or the hydrofoil (aliscato / jet) which is the fastest option.

The journey can take between 40 minutes to an hour and a half depending on the speed of the boat. And, of course, ticket prices will vary depending on which boat you decide on.

If you want to visit some of the other gorgeous islands in the Bay of Naples as well, you could travel between Procida, Ischia and Capri. If you want to travel from Ischia to Capri, the journey takes between 50 minutes to an hour and 25 minutes. Then from there, the ferry from Ischia to Procida is just 15 – 25 minutes!

Ferries and hydrofoils leave daily in the peak summer season (May – September).

What to do in Capri Italy | Il Faraglioni

When is the Best Time to Visit Capri?

Like much of the Amalfi Coast, Capri is most visited during the summer months. May through September is peak season. The temperatures reach the high 80s and the weather is perfect for visiting Capri’s beaches or taking a boat trip around the island.

The shoulder season months of April and May or September and October will generally be less crowded than the peak summer months and may still offer nice weather.

The winter months are considered the off-season and many hotels, shops and restaurants will be closed. Because Capri is a residential island, you can still expect to find a couple of restaurants open and perhaps some hotels (with lower than normal rates!).

Villa San Michele and Garden of Augustus are both open year-round, and the chairlift to Anacapri is also operational in the winter as well. So, it is definitely possible to visit Capri during the winter and enjoy the island with no crowds!

However, if you would like to visit some of the islands beach clubs and enjoy a swim in the Tyrrhenian Sea, plan a visit during the summer or shoulder months.

Day Trip to Capri | La Fontelina Beach Club

How Much Time Do You Need in Capri?

Many people wonder, is Capri worth a day trip? Or is 1 day in Capri enough time? Since you can get to Capri in under an hour by taking the hydrofoil from Naples, I’d say that Capri is definitely worth a day trip!

With one day in Capri, you can see some of the island’s most famous points of interest like the Gardens of Augustus, Piazza Umberto I and the Faraglioni.

Now, do I think staying overnight in Capri is worth it? If you have the time and budget… totally! With two days in Capri, you can explore even more of the island by taking the chairlift to Anacapri or doing a boat trip around the island and visiting the Blue Grotto.

So, there are plenty of things to do in Capri for 2 days but, if you’re short on time or would prefer not to stay overnight, a day trip to the island is totally doable as well!

Capri One Day Itinerary

Here’s exactly what to do in Capri Italy with one day! This Capri itinerary covers some of the best things the island has to offer: beach clubs, beautiful gardens, scenic viewpoints and delicious dining.

What to See in Capri Italy | La Fontelina Beach Club

Relax at La Fontelina Beach Club

One of the most iconic places in Capri is La Fontelina ! Set on the rocky coastline, this beach club and restaurant has one of the best view points of the Faraglioni.

The Faraglioni are three towering rock formations jutting out of the sea. And, the trio of dramatic rock stacks have become emblematic of the island.

I recommend making a reservation in advance and arriving at La Fontelina around opening time to snag some sun loungers close to the water.

Spend the day sipping on Apersol spritz under the sun and floating in the turquoise waters. What could be better?

Also, don’t miss dining at their restaurant for lunch. The fresh seafood selection is incredible!

capri day trip or stay

Explore Piazza Umberto I

After an incredible day spent in the sun, pop up to Piazza Umberto I (or informally called La Piazzetta). This is the most famous square located at the top of the island and is the center of the island’s social scene.

La Piazzetta is home to high-end boutiques of Italian fashion designers as well as little cafes and restaurants. So, grab a cappuccino and relax or do a little shopping!

Capri Day Trip from Naples | View from Giardini di Augusto

Take in the views at Giardini di Augusto

Giardini di Augusto, or the Gardens of Augustus, are just minutes from the center of Capri and costs just 1 Euro to enter. The botanical gardens are lovely to stroll through but the best part is the scenic viewpoints.

Perched on the island’s edge, the Gardens of Augustus overlook the iconic Faraglioni! This is where you’ll find some of the absolute best views in Capri making Giardini di Augusto a must visit while on the island.

And, don’t miss the views of Via Krupp on the opposite side. This impressive pathway has hairpin turns and leads to Marina Piccola. However, it’s been permanently closed for several years due to falling rocks. It sure provides an interesting viewpoint from above though!

Best Restaurants in Capri, Italy | Ristorante Panorama

Dinner at Ristorante Panorama

This gorgeous restaurant is aptly named as it has panoramic views of the Bay of Naples. And the large open-air terrace in its quaint garden setting is the perfect place to watch the sun go down over the sea!

The menu at Ristorante Panorama features fresh seafood and delicious regional specialties like pizza Napoletana and Gnocchi alla Sorrentina.

How to get to Capri Italy

capri day trip or stay

One of the best ways to get to Capri is to fly. Capodichino/Naples International Airport in Naples, Italy (NAP) is the closest airport to Capri.

If you are arriving in Capri from Naples head to head to the port called, Molo Beverallo and take the ferry from there.

It is worth noting that there is a small airport in Capri, however, this airport only allows helicopters and chartered flights.

If your budget allows for this then definitely fly direct to Capri.

If the chartered flight/helicopter is out of your budget, you will want to take the ferry to Capri.

Hiring a private boat to Capri is possible, however, some of these boats are quite small so if you are prone to motion sickness you will want to find out the size of the boat before you begin your journey.

Purchasing a ticket on one of the heavier/mainstream ferries is the smoothest and most budget-friendly day trip to Capri.

Depending on the town you are arriving from will depend on the ferry you take.

 • The high-speed ferry from Sorrento to Capri takes roughly 20 minutes and costs €19.30 – €20.50 per person and the slower ferry takes 30 minutes costing €16.90 per person.
 • The ferry from Naples to Capri leaves from the Port of Naples at Molo Beverello. The high-speed ferry takes 50 minutes and costs €21.50 – €22.80 per person. The price depends on the time of day and discounts are available for children under 12, and children under 3 are free. The slower fairy takes 80 minutes and costs €14.80 per person. Again, there is a discount for children under 12 and all children under 3 are free.
 • The final option is to take the ferry from Positano to Capri and takes around 50 minutes. The cost of the ferry is around €20 per person.

Book your day trip to Capri now

If you would rather take a tour so someone else can worry about all of the details, plenty of tours depart from several locations. Some of the Capri Italy day tours are listed below.

Getting around Capri

capri day trip or stay

There are several affordable and easy ways to travel around Capri. The mode of transport you choose will depend on your budget and the time that you have.

Walking around Capri is the most economical and sustainable mode of transport. However, walking will require some time, and you are reasonably fit. Many areas in Capri are steep and can be a struggle in the Italian heat.

If you are arriving at the Marina Grande it is an uphill walk into Capri Town and can take up to thirty minutes without your luggage.

However, there is one walk I highly recommend you do during your day trip to Capri: the walk from Capri Town to Arco Naturale along the coastal path.

If you would rather not walk but are still visiting Capri on a budget, the next best way to get around the Island is on the local bus.

As with many Italian places, the buses do not run on a fixed schedule so you may arrive at the bus stop and be greeted with a line. However, despite the lack of schedule you won’t be left waiting too long for the next bus.

Generally speaking, the buses leave when they are full – the maximum capacity for the bus is 30 people.

You can purchase your ticket on the bus for € 2.50 but be aware, if you have a large piece of luggage you will be charged € 2 per item.

Views at the Mariana Grande in Capri

For tourists, driving is prohibited on the island. If you have rented a car , it is best to return it to the mainland and hire another car when you return from Capri.

If you prefer to avoid walking or public transport you can take a taxi. The taxis are usually around the bus stops and can seat six passengers. Most fairs quoted to you are for up to four people and there is a €5 charge for two extra passengers.

The prices for the taxi are reasonable, a trip from the Marina to Anacapri will be around €25.

If you choose to take a taxi, I suggest asking the driver as many questions as possible about the area.

I have found them to be incredibly helpful and to provide lots of information about the Island and the sites to see.

Ask your taxi driver if you are looking for local recommendations for places to eat!

Marina Grande Funicular

As mentioned, most people on a day trip to Capri arrive via the Marina Grande.

The walk into Capri Town is very steep and can be quite difficult with your luggage.

The easiest, quickest and cheapest to get to Capri Town is on the Funicular.

Once you arrive at the Marina, the signs to the entrance of the Funicular are marked….if in doubt, follow the crowd!

The funicular runs daily from 6:30 am until 11:00 pm and departs every few minutes.

Once you arrive at the entrance of the Funicular you can purchase your tickets which costs €2 per person each way.

The ride itself takes about 5 minutes!

Things to do on your day trip to Capri

There are so many things to do in Capri for a day, from “tourist” attractions to hidden gems and everything in between!

After a day trip to Capri you will be hanging out to go back again.

Below, you will find a list of things you should be able to fit into your day trip, but depending on the pace you want to go at you might want to choose just a couple of things to do.

1. Soak in the Views at the Marina Grande

Marina Grande in Capri

Most visitors will arrive at the Marina Grande unless you have chosen to take a private plane … this is not me!

Arriving at the Marina can feel overwhelming initially and may feel like it is not the best time to view the gorgeous Marina.

When you step off the ferry, plenty of people ask you if you would like a private boat, a taxi, or to eat at their restaurant.

If you are staying the night, you might prefer to drop off your luggage before you enjoy the Marina.

If you are on a day trip to Capri you can relax a little more.

When you’re at the Marina try to find a quiet spot to take in the views of the beautiful coloured buildings, the boats, and of course the stunning water.

The Marina is quite big so try to take note of where you have come from so you don’t miss your boat back to the mainland.

2. Take a ride on the Funicular

This one is easy to tick off your list of things to do in Capri! When you have finished taking in the Marina Grande, hop onto the Funicular and enjoy the five minute ride to Carpi Town.

Your five minute ride will take you through the lemon groves and the views from the Funicular are simply stunning.

3. Take a boat trip around Capri

Faraglioni Rocks on a boat trip during a day trip to Capri

You cannot leave Capri without taking a boat tour of the Island . You may book your tour as soon as you get off the ferry at Marina Grande.

Seeing Capri from the water gives you a complete difference experience to seeing it on foot or on a bus.

You have two options when choosing a boat tour, you can take a shared boat (other people from other groups will be on your tour) and these tours start at € 18 per person or you can take a private boat with only your group which costs a lot more.

A few highlights on the boat trip are going through the Faraglioni Rocks, the Statue of the Scugnizzo, passing the Tiberius’ Leap, visiting the entry points of various grottos, passing the Punta Carena Lighthouse and the sirens rocks.

4. Enter the Blue Grotto

capri day trip or stay

Separate from your island tour you can take a boat to enter the Blue Grotto .

This is not to be missed.

It is hard to explain the magical experience of seeing the glowing blue waters within the Grotto.

Be mindful, that the only way to enter the Grotto is to lay flat on the boat, the entrance is so small that you cannot access the Grotto at high tide.

Some boat companies may not highlight this to you so it is worth checking with the companies before you go.

The cost to see the Blue Grotto is € 14 per person and you will be asked for tips at the end.

It is a popular attraction and can be very busy so expect a line.

If you have chosen not to see the Blue Grotto but are on a boat with people who have, you will need to wait until everyone who has paid has seen the Grotto before moving on.

5. Take in the views of Capri

Views of Capri

Capri has many beautiful places where you can take in the views of the Island. I recommend reaching at least one viewpoint during your day on Capri Island.

Belvedere of Punta Cannone

The first viewpoint, Belvedere of Punta Cannone, is a little further from Capri town than the next viewpoint I will mention.

From this viewpoint, you can see beautiful views of the Faraglioni Rocks.

Because Belvedere of Punta Cannone rock is further from Capri town not many people visit, you virtually have the place to yourself!

Augustus Gardens

Augusts Gardens are botanic gardens in Capri Town. The gardens themselves are beautiful but the main drawcard is the views of the vivid blue waters and the rugged coast of Capri.

As you are closer to Capri Town you will be greeted by more tourists but it is still well worth it!

6. Hit the shops

Old town is Capri

Capri town is filled with beautiful shops and some of the best restaurants . Of course, you will find your high street and tourist-style shops and some high-end stores where you can purchase all your designer clothes.

If you would like to feel like the rich and famous during your trip to Capri head Via Camerelle and shop (or window shop!) the high-end stores.

Some of the storefronts are beautiful so are worth a visit even if high-end wear is not your thing.

7. Stroll along the coast

Travellers lounging in beach chairs on a beach in Capri

The most popular place to walk in Capri is from town to the Arco Naturale. The loop is just shy of 4km. Due to the popularity you find other people on the trail but it is not over touristed.

You can do the walk on your own or you can choose to take a guided walking tour if you want to make the most of your day trip.

If you are doing the walk alone, you might want to pick a few spots you would like to stop at so you don’t take your whole day on the walk.

No matter the route you take, you are in for a beautiful walk!

Ensure you bring some water and your camera, you will stop to take more photos than you originally planned on!!

capri day trip or stay

If you are an on-the-go kind of person who likes a jam-packed itinerary or you are doing more than a Capri day trip, you might want to add in the chairlift in Anacapri that goes to Monte Solaro.

Where to eat in Capri

A pole wrapped with flowers overlooking Capri

Capri has beautiful restaurants and eateries offering outstanding Italian food, so you will be spoiled for choice.

A few recommendations are:

Ristorante Il Geranio

Situated next to the Augusts Gardens you can enjoy a beautiful meal with views over the Faraglioni Rocks. The food is amazing although a little pricey, although, you are in Capri so this is to be expected.

Michelangelo Restaurant

Michelangelo comes highly recommended by locals and the food is outstanding. The restaurant is family owned and you will not regret your choice to grab a meal here.

If you have a little more time and are interested you can take a cooking class at Michelangelo and they are available for tastings and they cater for boat tours.

Lemon Gelato

Okay, so I know this is not a restaurant recommendation per se, but you cannot leave Capri without trying something – lemon?

There are lemons everywhere in Capri and you must try what’s local when traveling!

What better way to sample the lemons than trying Lemon Gelato?

It is also a perfect way to cool down on a hot summer’s afternoon, so in my humble opinion, it is a win-win!!

Bar Piccolo

Many will say you can’t go to Capri without visiting Bar Piccolo. It’s the place to be if you know what I mean. If you would like to get up close with the rich and famous grab and Aperol Spritzes and see who might run into.

Salumeria Da Aldo

In Marina Grande you will spot a yellow awning right on the waterfront, this will be Salumeria Da Aldo.

At Salumeria Da Aldo you will find some of the best Caprese sandwiches you will ever find.

The flavours are amazing and your sandwich life will forever change from your first bite!

You can’t visit Capri without getting a sandwich from Salumeria Da Aldo you may as well pop in while you wait for your boat to head back to the mainland.

When is the best time to take a day trip to Capri

Here comes the most annoying answer.

Any time of year is the best time to take a day trip to Capri .

Summer brings beautiful warm weather, Spring has stunning floral blooms and warmer days, Autumn still has some beautiful days but there are way fewer visitors and winter is a much slower pace and most of the tourists are heading to your more typical winter cities in Europe .

However, I do prefer the shoulder season of May or September as the weather is still warm but there are less tourists and there are more availabilities on tours, restaurants/cafes and hotels.

Things are often cheaper in the shoulder season due to the lack of tourists.

Capri Island is one of the most beautiful places you can visit in Italy . So if your travels bring you to southern Italy, we highly recommend planning a visit to the island!

And while Capri is a wonderful vacation destination in itself, many tourists combine it with a visit to Naples , Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius , or the Amalfi Coast and only have a day for the island… If that’s your plan as well, don’t hesitate – Capri is absolutely worth it, even if just for 1 day .

While there are several places from where you can reach the island, the best and quickest way to get to Capri is from Sorrento.

In this guide, you can find all the practical information for traveling from Sorrento to Capri, as well as our suggestions on how to see the best of Capri in a day. I hope that this guide will help you plan an unforgettable visit. Find out!

TIP: If you have no time to read the entire article, here are the two best ways to get from Sorrento to Capri if visiting for a day:

 • Round-trip transfer by a small boat or hydrofoil passenger ferry (includes the boat trip and the harbor fees; you explore Capri on your own).
 • Best-rated boat cruise (includes transportation, sightseeing along the coast, optional Blue Grotto stop, and about 4 hours of free time in Capri).

Further below, you can find more tour options.

Natural Arch (Arco Naturale ) in Capri

Below, you can see a short overview of what kind of information you’ll find in this article.

While you can just jump directly to the part that interests you the most, we highly recommend reading the entire article. It’s filled with practical tips and information based on our personal experience traveling to Capri from Sorrento.

I hope that our tips will help you plan an unforgettable visit and make the most out of your day tour to Capri!

How to visit Capri from Sorrento – OVERVIEW

 • Getting there
 • Our experience
 • Capri day trip itinerary suggestions:
 • OPTION 1: Full day itinerary
 • OPTION 2: The musts in 4-5 hours

Capri from Sorrento: distance & how long it takes to get there

Since Capri is an island that is not connected to the Italian mainland by bridge or tunnel, the only way to get to Capri is by boat (assuming you don’t have a helicopter – in which case, I’m sure you wouldn’t be reading this)… You can reach Capri by boat from Naples, Sorrento, Sorrento Peninsula, or the Amalfi Coast…

The closest piece of land from where you can reach Capri is the Sorrento Peninsula. Capri is located just 5 kilometers from the mainland, and about 12-15 km by boat from Sorrento town .

So in this guide, we focus on this option – traveling to Capri from Sorrento. But you can easily use the same tips and itinerary if traveling from other places as well.

The journey from Sorrento to Capri takes as little as 25-35 minutes , depending on the boat or the ferry you choose. There are large (car) ferries that run between Sorrento and Capri regularly the whole year round. In addition – in the high season between April and October – there are also many smaller companies that offer boat trips and/or organized tours to Capri.

Just to make it clear, you cannot drive to Capri . And even though there are car ferries and you can drive on Capri, tourists cannot visit Capri by car in the high season. But even in the winter season, it’s not advisable to visit Capri by car. The roads are narrow, parking – hard to find, and the best spots can’t be reached by car anyway. Take my word for it and don’t even consider it.

Sorrento harbor Marina Piccola

Sorrento to Capri ferry info

As already mentioned, there are many companies operating boat trips between Sorrento to Capri. All the bigger ferries depart from the main harbor of Sorrento – Marina Piccola , where you’ll also find their ticket offices.

The main ferry between Sorrento and Capri is operated by Caremar . It’s a huge boat that can carry cars and hundreds of passengers. This is probably the best option if you are visiting Capri in the low season (when the seas can be rougher) or if you have lots of luggage.

In the high season, there are many other options for ferries between Sorrento and Capri. While it’s usually possible to just get a ticket at the harbor, I highly advise booking a ferry in advance (online, or by walking to the harbor the day before, if you can). Otherwise, you may need to wait for the next available boat and waste precious time which you could be spending sightseeing…

TIP: Start your day early and take one of the first ferries in the morning (ideally before 8.30-9 am). Be sure to pre-book your return ferry since coming back from Capri in the afternoon is even more difficult than getting there in the morning. Unless you go with an organized tour, this is by far the best way to make the most out of your Capri day trip from Sorrento.

Which ferry is best? I would just choose the boat that best fits your itinerary. You can find the schedule for the biggest ferry companies and book tickets on this website (this is probably not everything that is available but this is one of the best websites I found when planning our own trip).

TIP: There is now this return boat transfer from Sorrento to Capri that is perfect if you want to visit the island for just a day. It has several advantages over ferries: you can book the ticket in advance, it’s cancelable up to 24 hours before the trip, and you can enjoy the scenery along the way (not like our experience with the ferry with no open spaces and dirty windows – see below). If you prefer a bigger boat, this hydrofoil ferry is another good option with set departure times giving you a full day to explore Capri.

Good to know: If you already find this part of the planning overwhelming, do yourself a favor and book an organized tour where most of the practical aspects of the day trip to Capri will be arranged for you. And if your budget allows it or you are traveling with a bigger family/group, you can also opt for a private day trip .

Further below, you can read about our experience taking the ferry from Sorrento to Capri. And if you scroll further, you’ll find our tips on what to see and how to plan your time.

Ferry ticket offices in Sorrento harbor at Marina Piccola

Our experience with Sorrento – Capri ferry

We booked the ferry from Sorrento to Capri with Caremar in advance. This was the best option for us since we were traveling in the shoulder season and wanted to be sure the boat would actually go no matter the weather. We also had luggage and you don’t have to pay extra for regular-size suitcases on this ferry.

This ferry is huge, efficient, reliable, and is one of the cheapest options. However, it’s not the nicest way to get to Capri since you won’t see much (anything) from the boat. Passengers sit inside and the only outside area that is accessible to everyone is very small and the views are limited. Plus, the windows are dirty… And, when we arrived in Capri, our huge ferry had to wait in line at the harbor for almost an hour (!) whereas all the smaller boats could just dock without any problems…

Also, when you book your tickets online, they charge you an extra booking fee and you still need to get a ‘boarding pass’ at their ticket office in Sorrento Harbor. This can be a nightmare on a busy day, so be sure to arrive well in advance. However, this was the case for several other ferries we took in the area with the other companies as well. No idea why they make it so unnecessarily complicated…

Good to know: While waiting to get our ‘boarding passes’ at the harbor in Sorrento, we saw many people queuing at various ticket offices of smaller companies trying to get return tickets to Capri for the day itself. We overhead that people who wanted to come back at around 6-7 PM were told that those boats were fully booked already… So they had to choose an earlier time for the return trip. This was at 9 am in the first week of April which is considered a rather quiet shoulder season…

So I recommend booking the ferry in advance, especially if traveling in the summer or on the weekends. As already said, if you are just going for a day and don’t have luggage with you, it’s better to opt for a round-trip transfer by smaller boat – it’s much more relaxing and more scenic than the ferry.

Day tours from Sorrento to Capri

Before we continue with the suggestions on how to best spend your day once you get to Capri, let’s take a look at the organized tours . While you can easily visit Capri from Sorrento on your own, there are some advantages of going with a tour.

First, by booking a tour, you don’t have to worry about how to get to Capri and you have your seat guaranteed . Furthermore, most Capri day tours already include a boat trip around the island and a stop at the famous Blue Grotto , one of the most iconic places to see in Capri . This saves you quite some time not having to arrange it yourself once you get to the island.

And finally, the majority of organized tours foresee 4-5 hours of free time on Capri Island , allowing you to choose exactly what you want to see and do it at your own pace. For recommendations on how to spend your day in Capri, see our itinerary suggestions below.

Of course, there are also some disadvantages of going with a tour vs. on your own, mainly that you’ll have limited time on the island. Going on your own, you could take one of the earliest ferries to Capri and one of the latest ferries back to Sorrento which would give you a bit more time on the island. On the other hand, ferries only run between 7 am and +- 7 pm, and a 12-hour sightseeing day might not be everyone’s idea of a relaxing vacation anyway…

TIP: If you decide to go with a tour , we highly recommend booking online in advance . That way, you can compare itineraries, prices, what’s included, and read customer reviews. Booking a tour at the harbor is overwhelming and often you have no idea what you book, if you pay the correct price for what you get, or how good the service is…

Since the choice of tours is overwhelming online as well, we hand-picked a few of the best options for Capri tours from Sorrento:

 • Exclusive small-group tour . This is one of the best-rated Capri day tours from Sorrento. You travel in a small boat with a maximum of 12 people, tour around the island, stop at the Blue Grotto (a visit inside is always optional), stop for a swim, and get about 4 hours of free time to explore Capri.
 • Best-value tour . This tour is the best-rated budget option for visiting Capri from Sorrento. The itinerary is very similar to the other tours, but because you travel on a bigger boat, it’s much cheaper. It takes you from Sorrento to Capri and includes the boat tour around the island (+Blue Grotto stop), plus a few other things – so it’s actually better value than paying for the regular ferry to the island and the boat tour around it separately.
 • Private tour . This is one of the best-value private tours from Sorrento to Capri. It has a very similar itinerary as all the other tours, with the advantage that you travel on a private boat. If you are traveling with 4-5 people, it offers really good value.
 • Private all-in tour . This is quite an expensive tour, but it takes care of everything – from getting to the island to visiting all the main highlights. If money isn’t an issue and you want to see the best of Capri with a personal guide by your side, this is one of the best options.

Blue Grotto visit is included in most Sorrento to Capri tours

What to see in Capri in a day – suggested itineraries

There are many possibilities for how to spend a day in Capri. A lot depends on how much time you have, how you get around (taxi, bus,..), your interests, but also how busy it is and how much time you’ll waste waiting in lines…

Below, you can find two suggested day trip itineraries covering the main highlights of Capri in the most efficient way .

One of them is a full-day itinerary for those of you traveling on your own, and the other one is a 4-5-hour itinerary for those visiting Capri with a tour.

Whether you are traveling on your own or with a tour that gives you several hours of free time on the island, you can use one of these suggestions to make the most of your day in Capri. Take a look below!

Monte Solaro Capri

OPTION 1: Best of Capri in 1 day

This itinerary is for those who want to see all the most popular places in Capri in a day. It includes the boat tour around the island and the Blue Grotto as well as the main points of interest in Capri and Anacapri. This concentrates on the ‘musts’, keeping into account what’s actually doable in just 1 day.

Below is a short overview of how you could spend a day in Capri. Please note that the times are just indicated for your reference. This is probably the most logical (thus most popular itinerary), so it might get very busy at some places (buses, chairlift, etc.).

8.30 AM: Ferry from Sorrento to Capri. 9.30 AM : Boat tour around the island (takes 1 hour, but the optional Blue Grotto visit will make it longer). Or opt for this highly-rated private tour which takes 2 hours. 11 AM: Bus or taxi, or steep stairs to Anacapri. Noon : Monte Solaro by chairlift. 1 PM: Anacapri center, lunch & bus or taxi to Capri. 2.30-3 PM: Capri town: Piazza Umberto I, Via Camerelle, Giardini di Augusto (+Via Krupp views), etc. 5-6 PM : Funicular down to Marina Grande and ferry back to Sorrento.

Via Krupp as seen from Giardini di Augusto in Capri

TIP: If you don’t have to rush to the harbor for the ferry, you could explore a bit more. In that case, you could spend a bit more time in Anacapri and visit Villa San Michele and San Michele Church .

In Capri town , visit (one of) the following – Villa Jovis, the Natural Arch, or Belvedere Tragara . You can make a loop by heading to the Natural Arch first, then hiking Via Pizzolungo to Belvedere Tragara, and from there back to the town center. This is one of the nicest walks in Capri, but you’ll need at least 2-3 hours and the hike involves quite some stairs. If you also want to see Villa Jovis, you’ll need even more time, so be sure to check your ferry schedule!

TIP: If you are looking for more details and information about the places we recommend visiting, check out our guides to the best things to do in Capri and the best of Anacapari .

PRO TIP: If you don’t mind some backtracking and want to avoid the biggest crowds everywhere, you could also visit these places in a different order . So, for example, start with Anacapri and Monte Solaro first thing in the morning (the chairlift starts running at 9.30 AM). Then walk down (or take a bus) to Marina Grande, do a boat tour, and have some lunch. In the afternoon, take the funicular to Capri town and explore there.

Or arrive in Capri super early, walk Via Pizzolungo in the morning, explore Capri, have lunch, do the boat tour, and then visit Anacapri and Monte Solaro in the afternoon.

View from Villa San Michele in Anacapri

OPTION 2: Capri in 4-5 hours

This is an itinerary that will work best if you are visiting Capri with a boat tour . As already mentioned, most organized tours will already take you on a boat trip around the island and stop at the Blue Cave. So you’ll have covered two of the best activities already and have 4-5 hours left to explore Capri on your own.

For that, you could use a similar itinerary to the one described above. But you’ll have to just concentrate on the musts and be sure you get back to the boat in time.

As a minimum, we recommend visiting Monte Solaro in Anacapri (take a bus or a taxi from the harbor to get there). From there, take a bus or a taxi to Capri and explore the town center. Some of the must-sees with little time include Piazza Umberto I and Via Camerelle . We highly recommend visiting Giardini di Augusto which offers amazing coastal views. Here, you can also see the famous Via Krupp .

From Capri, take a funicular (or bus/ taxi) down to your boat at Marina Grande .

Church San Michele in Anacapri on Capri island

So, this is our guide for visiting Capri from Sorrento. I hope that it gives you a better idea of what to expect and helps you plan your time and make the most of your Capri day trip.

And here are some frequently asked practical questions that you may find helpful as well.

Visiting Capri from Sorrento – FAQ

The best way to get to Capri from Sorrento is by taking a ferry from Sorento’s Marina Piccola to Capri’s Marina Grande. In high season, there are ferries every 20-30 minutes, and they run from 7 AM to +- 7 PM. Organized boat tours and private boats are also available.

Depending on which boat you book, the ferry ride from Sorrento to Capri takes about 20-30 minutes.

A one-way ferry ticket from Sorrento to Capri costs 20-30 euros, so about 40-60 euros for the round trip. The price depends on the boat and also on the time of the day.

There are various tour options from Sorrento to Capri. The cheapest boat tours start from about 55-60 euro per person. If you prefer to travel in a smaller group, prepare to pay 100-130 euro per person. Most tours do not include the Blue Grotto entrance fee, which is an additional 14 euro per person.

While many parts of Capri can only be explored on foot, you cannot walk everywhere . The best way to get around is by public bus or by taxi. A single bus ride costs 2.40 euros (if you get a ticket in advance), or you can get a day ticket for the price of three single rides. Taxi prices depend on the distance you travel and are much higher, but taking a taxi can save you a lot of time. There’s also a funicular that connects Marina Grande to Capri (it costs 2.20 euros).

hello! do you think is it a good idea to take the ferry with our 1 year baby? is it a difference with NLG and SNAV or the same? thanks!!!!

Hi Alejandro, there are plenty of locals living/vacationing on Carpri Island who take ferries with their kids and babies all the time. So yes, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to do that. You may want to opt for a bigger boat if you have lots of luggage and a stroller.

Nicoleta G.

Wednesday 15th of March 2023

Hi…how far in advance would you recommend I book the return ferry tickets from Sorrento if we are travelling at the start of July? (A month? 2 mths? More?) also are the tickets refundable if you book in advance?

@Jurga, oh this is great, thank you!!!

Hi Nicoleta, we booked our tickets a few weeks in advance. It's really hard to say, but often - especially if you are not flexible with the timing - it's best to book upfront. If you don't have to travel during the peak times (morning and evening), then you can usually also find something available at the harbor. But we were there in a really low season and all the morning departures (and evening trips to come back) were sold out. As for the cancelation, as far as I remember, our tickets with the big ferry were non-cancelable. This probably depends on the company you choose to travel with. The tours that we recommend are all cancelable up to 24 hours before the trip, but that's not the case for the ferries. PS I just did some quick research to see if there were any new options available and I found this boat transfer. From what I see, they only provide transportation to Capri from Sorrento and back, giving you complete freedom to explore the island on your own. At the moment, these tickets are cancelable/amendable up to 24 hours before the trip. So this could be a good option for you. Also, this boat looks so much nicer than the big ferry that we took - at least, you can also enjoy the scenery from the boat.

Sunday 21st of August 2022

hello, do you think Sorrento is worth a visit on its own? We'll stay in Napoli and might consider getting a ferry directly from Napoli. What would be your recommendation? Also, thank you for your tips, very useful!

Monday 22nd of August 2022

@Jurga, thank you very much, appreciate your quick response.

Hi Seline, it all depends on how much time you have. If you have just one day, then I’d go directly from Naples to Capri and spend as much as possible time there. If you have a few days extra, then yes, Sorrento is really nice. We stayed there and really enjoyed it, but more so in the evening when it was quieter. Also, you only need an hour or two in Sorrento- not the whole day. But with limited time and if staying in Naples, there are better ways to spend your time. See our article with the best day trips from Naples for more suggestions. Have a great trip!

22 Easy Ways to Stay Active Throughout the Day

Posted: March 14, 2024 | Last updated: May 6, 2024

Remember that staying active is a lifelong journey, and progress takes time. Stay consistent with your efforts, be patient with yourself, and celebrate small victories along the way. By making physical activity a priority in your daily life, you'll enjoy improved health, vitality, and overall quality of life.]]>

Stay Consistent and Be Patient

Incorporate mindfulness into your physical activity routine by focusing on your body and breath during exercise. Whether it's yoga, tai chi, or mindful walking, practicing awareness and intentionality can enhance the benefits of movement for both body and mind]]>

Practice Mindful Movement

Use fitness apps, activity trackers, or wearable devices to monitor your daily activity levels and set reminders to move throughout the day. Tracking your progress and celebrating milestones can help you stay motivated and focused on your fitness goals]]>

Take Advantage of Technology

Include balance exercises in your routine to improve stability and prevent falls. Simple exercises like standing on one leg, heel-to-toe walking, or using a balance board can help strengthen your core and lower body muscles]]>

Incorporate Balance Exercises

Engage in hobbies and activities that require movement and physical exertion. Whether it's hiking, biking, swimming, or playing sports, finding enjoyable ways to stay active will make exercise feel less like a chore and more like a rewarding pastime]]>

Practice Active Hobbies

Sign up for fitness classes or group exercise sessions to add structure and variety to your workouts. Whether it's yoga, Pilates, dance, or boot camp, finding a class that interests you can make staying active more enjoyable and social]]>

Join a Fitness Class

If you have a dog, take advantage of daily walks as a way to stay active together. Aim for longer walks or explore new trails and parks to keep both you and your furry friend healthy and happy]]>

Take the Dog for a Walk

Set daily or weekly activity goals to keep yourself motivated and accountable. Whether it's reaching a certain number of steps, minutes of exercise, or active breaks, having clear goals can help you stay on track with your fitness regimen]]>

Set Activity Goals

Incorporate simple exercises into your desk routine to stay active throughout the workday. Try desk push-ups, leg lifts, or seated leg extensions to engage your muscles and increase blood flow]]>

Practice Desk Exercises

Whenever feasible, schedule walking meetings or brainstorming sessions outdoors. Walking and talking not only promotes creativity and productivity but also provides an opportunity to get some exercise and fresh air]]>

Schedule Active Meetings

Take advantage of phone calls as an opportunity to stand up or walk around. Use a hands-free device to move freely while talking, or simply stand up and pace back and forth to add more steps to your day]]>

Stand or Walk During Phone Calls

Instead of sitting through commercials while watching TV, use that time to engage in quick exercises or stretches. Perform jumping jacks, push-ups, or bodyweight squats to keep your body moving during breaks]]>

Use Commercial Breaks Wisely

Whether you're walking to the restroom or heading to a meeting, opt for the longer route whenever possible. Adding extra steps to your daily routine is an easy way to increase your daily activity levels]]>

Take the Long Route

Put on your favorite music and dance while cooking, cleaning, or doing laundry. Not only is dancing a fun way to stay active, but it also helps lift your spirits and reduce stress ]]>

Dance While Doing Tasks

Turn everyday household chores into opportunities for physical activity. Vacuuming, mopping, gardening, and washing dishes all require movement and can contribute to your daily exercise goals]]>

Incorporate Household Chores

Instead of scrolling through your phone during breaks, use that time to engage in physical activity. Take a brisk walk around the block, do a few minutes of yoga or tai chi, or perform a quick workout routine to boost your energy and mood]]>

Take Active Breaks

When running errands or commuting to work, park your car farther away from your destination. This simple adjustment will encourage you to walk more steps throughout the day and add extra physical activity to your routine]]>

Park Farther Away

Consider investing in a standing desk or adjustable workstation that allows you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. Standing while working can help reduce the risk of sedentary behavior and improve posture and circulation]]>

Use a Standing Desk

Combat the negative effects of prolonged sitting by taking short breaks to stand up and move around. Set a timer to remind yourself to stand up and stretch, walk around the office, or perform simple exercises like squats or lunges]]>

Stand Up and Move Every Hour

Set aside time throughout the day to stretch your muscles and improve flexibility. Incorporate simple stretches into your routine, targeting major muscle groups such as the neck, shoulders, back, and legs. Regular stretching can help prevent stiffness and discomfort associated with prolonged sitting.]]>

Schedule Regular Stretch Breaks

Instead of relying on elevators or escalators, opt for the stairs whenever possible. Climbing stairs is an excellent way to elevate your heart rate, strengthen your leg muscles, and burn extra calories throughout the day.]]>

Take the Stairs

If feasible, consider walking or biking to work instead of driving or taking public transportation. Not only will you incorporate physical activity into your daily commute, but you'll also reduce your carbon footprint and enjoy the benefits of fresh air and sunlight.]]>

Walk or Bike to Work

More for you.
